Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to you. I have some of a blunt penknife
- 0:03the Doctor Who commentary podcast after an absence, the
- 0:09size of the universe or the ever-decreasing universe itself.
- 0:14I am back here with my sparring partner Jason Miller say hello
- 0:18Jason Till I hope you are ready for what I'm going to bring over
- 0:23the next two hours and my prediction is pain.
- 0:27Bring it my, bring it. Now I'll tell you what, right?
- 0:29I think you and I are on the same page about the story.
- 0:32I think we both love this. We are not and I've come here
- 0:36with receipts and I'm not going to settle a score with you.
- 0:40That is probably about 17 years old.
- 0:47So you and I both used to be regular posters on Stacy Smith
- 0:52question marks the ratings guide and we didn't interact much 15
- 0:57years ago when we were both in our posting Heyday.
- 1:01But if you go back to the ratings guide you and I both
- 1:04Both reviewed logopolis. Spoiler alert for today's
- 1:08recording in sequence. So my review is posted on New
- 1:14Year's Eve, 2003, and it is a screen and a half of absolute
- 1:19gushing. Dare I say almost orgasmic
- 1:23praised for logopolis. And then the very next review is
- 1:28by one Breanna Kelly young, Joe Ford posted about eight months
- 1:32later. I was young, right?
- 1:36And he says he hasn't used as there seems to be a theory in
- 1:39Doctor Who found that logopolis is one of the best stories to
- 1:42have ever been transmitted and that it is a fitting and
- 1:45climactic and to the ultimate doctors rain.
- 1:48Well I say expletive deleted to that and more besides logopolis
- 1:54is nowhere near the best Doctor Who story it certainly isn't the
- 1:58best Tom Baker story and it's not even the best of season 18.
- 2:02It's a story that aspires to Greatness but never reaches it.
- 2:06That teases with a coherent story line, but instead the
- 2:08lights and frustrating the random viewer.
- 2:11It is the weakest Christopher H, big made Story by a square mile
- 2:15and reveals that. The poor guy is running out of
- 2:17steam after practically rewriting every single story for
- 2:20the season or so, he claims. So, this is the guy that I am
- 2:25here to spar with today, we're going to go 15 rounds, right?
- 2:29No unfortunately if that's what ho you're going to be highly
- 2:34disappointed. I like you have here bearing a
- 2:3760 year old 70 year old grudge over this review and I came here
- 2:41to bring the pain what happened I was going to ask you how long
- 2:44you been sitting on this for 16 years.
- 2:46That there's a long time garage. Unfortunately time and age has
- 2:55matured me and I don't know if you listen to my recent gnomon
- 2:58be praised. The episode about logopolis.
- 3:02But I've found that an intense amount of love.
- 3:04This story over the last 16 years, and I will be coming to
- 3:09celebrate, its successes with you.
- 3:12But I will say, I don't think this is the strongest story of
- 3:15season 18. That's the one part of that with
- 3:17that terrible review, that I wrote all those years back.
- 3:20That's the one part I would still say, I think Warriors gate
- 3:23is the strongest story of this season, for a lot of reasons.
- 3:29But apart from that, I rather like this.
- 3:32Now, so I I'm sorry. Sorry about that.
- 3:36Actually I did listen to you. Now, I'm on be praised episode
- 3:40and after I heard your ruminations on one John Fraser,
- 3:46you received a mystery present in the mail.
- 3:48And now the truth can be revealed that I am the source of
- 3:50that mystery present. I mean, I knew that right,
- 3:55excuse me, you're the first strike Master sent me
- 3:57pornographic books in the post honestly.
- 4:03Pretty racy book. Hey, why didn't know how
- 4:09prolific John Fraser was? Because I'm a little bit behind
- 4:12on my Dirk bogarde. 1950s British epic movies.
- 4:17So I was watching logopolis this past summer, this past August as
- 4:22part of my Twitter pilgrimage and any time I watch the story
- 4:26I, of course, have the DVD info text on.
- 4:29So now I'm watching the gospels for the first time on the season
- 4:318. Teen Blu-ray which has the
- 4:34all-new written info text and it talked about Fraser's career and
- 4:38his autobiography. So I immediately run over to
- 4:40Amazon, not only is the book still in print and in stock on
- 4:45Amazon UK but it's still in print and in stock on Amazon us.
- 4:49So I ordered myself a copy and then I played your hamster and I
- 4:52ordered you a copy and I have read the book and it is It will
- 4:57curl your hair. It will pop your eyebrows.
- 5:00This is a shocking shockingly racy book.
- 5:03It's amazing but it's shockingly.
- 5:05Scandalously razy, is it most scandalous than the giant ebook?
- 5:11Let's scandalous than the jayanti book because John Fraser
- 5:14himself does not commit any criminal behavior and there's no
- 5:17real Gary Downey type, villain lurking to the book but dude is
- 5:21it is a joyful exploration of what it was like to be closeted
- 5:25in Hollywood. Good and in London, cinema in
- 5:28the 40s and 50s, and 60s, and he names names, and he gives
- 5:32receipts. And he just tells very, very
- 5:35funny story. Now, this is a family podcast.
- 5:37Joe, I know you don't, you don't be telling these stories on your
- 5:39show, so I'll spare you the details.
- 5:42But it is an amazing, amazing book.
- 5:45Ezio cellphone this podcast, okay, this is definitely PG-13.
- 5:49We do not touch upon these things.
- 5:51However, I mean I have to apologize.
- 5:53Got haven't read the book yet. Life is rather got in the way.
- 5:56In the last six months, I haven't read any books in the
- 5:59last six months. Actually has a shocking
- 6:02admission but I will get to that because well, racy.
- 6:07So say, you know, I love about that.
- 6:09So I would get to that, however, I'm hoping you'll add a few
- 6:13details when John Fraser join us the story.
- 6:15Because obviously you have, well, listen.
- 6:19I am queued up and ready to go. If you are, I am queued up and
- 6:23ready to go, right? Well, can't believe you read out
- 6:26loud. You bastard?
- 6:29I bring my receipts job. My next time, I'll come this.
- 6:32Love you weekends ago. Robert bring one of yours.
- 6:34All right, I have not been on this show in nine months, and I
- 6:40just was sitting on this and sitting on this like, entropy
- 6:44ready to unleash upon the universe.
- 6:46Oh, um, well, first of all, we call be introduced to Teague.
- 6:51And you wanker, and we will know.
- 6:53Okay, all right. So count as in Our count us down
- 6:57in part 4. Part 3 part, 2 part 1 go.
- 7:08I've got a question for you. Straight off the bat.
- 7:11It's not a Joe Ford podcast. It doesn't begin.
- 7:14Until Joe asks, I have a question for you.
- 7:16I end this. Let's go, let's do it.
- 7:18We're just thought I'd point out.
- 7:19When I went on track one last week, Jason use that exact tone
- 7:23of through. On at me, I'm a naughty boy,
- 7:26aren't I is this the most structured or the most
- 7:32successfully structured season of classic Who, that's a really
- 7:38good question. And I think you and I both know
- 7:40the answer already. It's the first season of Doctor
- 7:44Who that is actually structured like a season with a proper
- 7:48beginning. Middle, and end, unless you
- 7:50count series 1 back in. Nineteen, sixty three, sixty
- 7:54four. But here every story leads into
- 7:56the next, there's a big Revelation here that ties back
- 8:00to full circle know later on in the story.
- 8:04So big need was certainly knew exactly what he was doing and
- 8:08it's almost modern. It's almost 21st century and
- 8:10it's in a style, you know what? Small businesses even though he
- 8:15had some structure this to this year there was still
- 8:18unpredictable elements for hurting because the master was
- 8:21never supposed to be a keeper truck and we'll see I'm bid me,
- 8:24recite, right? I am not going to put him in the
- 8:26Keeper at Rockin. He's going to be the main
- 8:28Villain at the end of the season as well.
- 8:34And I think one of the reasons season 18 works so well, is this
- 8:38is where Peter grimwade joins the series and direct his first
- 8:42two stories. And I have a question for you,
- 8:46on the all-time great Doctor Who directors, and we just saw the
- 8:50very famous scene where the police officers pulled into the
- 8:53Tardis. Where do you slide grimwade?
- 8:55And Doctor? Who's great directors?
- 8:59I mean, I've never skated to pay rent by tomorrow.
- 9:01Thank you very much but I wear, I would slice.
- 9:07He's mad. He's out there.
- 9:08So I would say probably like the top three directors of classic
- 9:12who I'd probably put Douglas Can field at the top.
- 9:17Graham half a second and Peter greenaway third.
- 9:20So that's how high is for me. Interesting.
- 9:27My list is probably pretty similar.
- 9:30I mean, having just finished the classic series pilgrimage.
- 9:32I think Andrew Morgan is worthy of a spot somewhere in the top
- 9:3510, if not the top 5, but looking at the stuff that Grim
- 9:38way, did I just always wowed by his directorial flourishes?
- 9:43So, you know, I haven't been on hamster in a while.
- 9:46And when I was doing all my episodes early on, we used to
- 9:49talk about these shows scene by scene and I think the Paw Cast
- 9:54has evolved. So, I think, rather than doing
- 9:56my usual scene by scene discussion, I think it would
- 9:59help to talk about this story person by person.
- 10:03So, we're talking about grimwade now and then, we can discuss
- 10:06some other people associated with the show, as they pop up on
- 10:10screen. But what about grimwade works
- 10:13for you? What makes you ranked him?
- 10:15So highly. Well, what did he do?
- 10:18Full circle, logopolis Kinder and Earth shock and those are
- 10:24Our for very disparate stories tonally, they are completely
- 10:28different stories and he Aces. Every single one of them in Full
- 10:31Circle, it's probably one of the most robust Productions Doctor
- 10:36Who is able to put out. I watch Full Circle this week
- 10:40and I thought it looked incredible.
- 10:43Like he has an absolute hat. Confident handle on story on
- 10:47another planet, which not a lot of threats as adults.
- 10:50Who do with this, he absolutely gets the toes.
- 10:54Right. That funereal tone that is
- 10:56needed in this story, to see, Tom Baker out and I feel every
- 11:00single scene in this is a pop and maybe the scenes now between
- 11:03not Vanessa and Teagan kind of lean into that mood with Kinder.
- 11:10He's got the like a very cerebral.
- 11:12Very surreal story that he's telling and he just Wow's with
- 11:17some completely out their video effects and set pieces and
- 11:22without shock, he's having to tell I an action adventure story
- 11:25and he does it like no other director in Doctor Who I think
- 11:28in the last episode of Earth shock, it's something like 150
- 11:34separate scenes in a 25-minute story.
- 11:37So, it is absolutely got the place it needs.
- 11:41I just think he was a shock, any competent director, who would
- 11:45read the script, and he understood what he had to do?
- 11:50What his part was in, bringing it to life.
- 11:53Here we go. I think Bravo and I'm going to
- 11:56agree to all that. Then you talked about the
- 11:58editing that he did with Earth shock with 150 shots in a 25
- 12:03minute episode, but the Cliffhanger to part 3 of Kenda,
- 12:08you know, I just came back from Ally, who the annual Long Island
- 12:11Doctor, Who convention, and every year, I run a panel called
- 12:15Cliffhangers exclamation point and in about 45 to 50 minutes,
- 12:20my co-panelists and I will discuss, you know, 20 or T5
- 12:24Cliffhangers and I just realized that I should have run the
- 12:28kindda are three Cliffhanger. I've run the logopolis part 3
- 12:33Cliffhanger. So we'll see that fairly soon
- 12:36that many years. But the kingdom part 3, the
- 12:39editing and the way that he synchronizes the video to the
- 12:42countdown clocks and the mounting tension and the
- 12:46superimposed video effects. We don't give him enough credit
- 12:51for the editing that he did because editing now is easy.
- 12:54Alton a digital, the editing that you would have had to do,
- 12:57you know, almost with an exacto knife and cellophane tape in
- 13:011981 1982, it would have been a back-breaking effort to assemble
- 13:06some of the cuts that he did and yet he did it and you know, we
- 13:12take it for granted now because it's such a modern look.
- 13:14But for its time that's sort of editing was Manic.
- 13:17And frantic then I want to tell a funny anecdote because we just
- 13:20saw Tegan and Auntie Vanessa's house.
- 13:24I'm sure you've seen on the I think it was on the Meg Lohse
- 13:30DVD. The original do, you know whose
- 13:33house that was? That they were using as Tegan
- 13:36and Aunt Vanessa's house? So it's Andrew McCulloch, and
- 13:39the other fellows house, isn't it?
- 13:42It's the house. They were living in, as they
- 13:44were writing Negros. I know that reading this.
- 13:48Yeah. Location manager came around.
- 13:51It was there else. And they thought, the location
- 13:53manager would come around from the BBC to collect.
- 13:55There are long overdue script. But no, they were just Trying to
- 13:58use the house for for the logopolis exteriors.
- 14:01That is a great story. I think like very quickly kind
- 14:06of song up on Peter greenaway, I just feel like structurally.
- 14:12Yeah, kind of emotionally. Hey, just, and sort of
- 14:17creatively, he gave everything he had liked by all accounts.
- 14:20He was a very manic director who went round with his fingers like
- 14:25that, like, as a square like, checking out, camera angles,
- 14:28like between his fingers all the time driving, the actors bloody
- 14:31Bonkers, but who cares? Like who cares about the actors
- 14:34when the results is good? As this if you listen to any
- 14:38Janet and pure audio commentary they're always making fun of him
- 14:42for going around with with the hands on the Square.
- 14:46And I think Matthew Waterhouse in his audio, autobiography blue
- 14:50box boy. He was a little dismissive of
- 14:53grimwade as well, if memory serves me right, the apologize.
- 14:56If on mischaracterizing them The site, you know the grief what's
- 15:08the guy who directed The Shining called Kubrick Stanley Kubrick
- 15:12you know like driving everybody mad trying to get this thing
- 15:15perfect but he's one of the best directors we ever had.
- 15:18Like maybe the payoffs worth it. Well, Kubrick was kind of
- 15:24abusive. If you listen to the
- 15:25behind-the-scenes stories on The Shining, when he was making
- 15:27Shelley, Duvall do 62 takes of a single scene, nothing, it
- 15:31literally gave her a nervous breakdown.
- 15:33Grimwade is working in a studio where, you know, the clock turns
- 15:36off 10:00 whether you're ready or not, and we have thanks to
- 15:40the Blu-rays. We have a lot of his Studio
- 15:42footage. We can actually see him direct.
- 15:44He was down on the floor, he was winding up the shots.
- 15:46Personally, rather than just lurking in the gallery like a
- 15:50ghost you see I shouldn't between him and Tom made.
- 15:53His comeback is obviously a wee bit toxic himself at this point.
- 15:56He's leaving, right? I'm running show and he's pissed
- 15:59basically and then this in the Regeneration sequence where he's
- 16:02asked to beckon, With a hand, he's just going.
- 16:05Well, I don't want to go back and tell him.
- 16:06I'm not gonna beckon, you know, like don't make a space be a
- 16:10Grimm waves and angry bloke, director me.
- 16:13I mean, poor Matthew wore out. He must be ducking under that
- 16:15console every five minutes. Use egos about the place.
- 16:20Well, this is only a year after Tom Baker, got Allan Bromley
- 16:23fired from the middle of night mayor of Eden.
- 16:27You know, let's not just think that it's grimwade is the one
- 16:29rotten egg that cause Tom Baker to snap the mid-40s time.
- 16:33Baker in the late 70s when it was going to snap at the nicest
- 16:35director in the world. It's true.
- 16:38But Tom Baker in this story takes his character to whole new
- 16:43depths. And I want to reserve talking
- 16:45about that until some of the later episodes.
- 16:47But I'll still one of my favorite, Tom Baker,
- 16:50performances out of his entire seven-year run even though it's
- 16:53his last story even though he's on the way out the door and he's
- 16:57got, you know, a male companion for the first time since I have
- 17:00a Sullivan, it's just him and a drink in the TARDIS.
- 17:03I think Tom Baker is amazing, and no matter how angry he may
- 17:06have been during filming that doesn't show up in his
- 17:08performance. Whereas, there are other stories
- 17:10where he's clearly phoning it in and clearly going into operation
- 17:13shut down. But in this story if he was
- 17:16holding a grudge on grimwade it is not visible or is not
- 17:19audible. I'm gonna buy the Final Cut and
- 17:22disagree with you. I agree with you that this is
- 17:24one of his best performances. He absolutely saved the best for
- 17:27last and I think it's because J NT and Pete grimwade.
- 17:31And Christopher H, bid me well, All strong characters and they
- 17:34pretty much forced him in his last season you will do.
- 17:38What's on the page. Big me talks about coming down
- 17:41on the set and saying stop, you. No ad-libbing say the script as
- 17:45it is we've written this script. Say it, as it is like they were
- 17:48strong enough to stand up to me in like it but that's what he
- 17:51had to do. I defy you to find a story where
- 17:57Tom Baker is phoning it in I think that is a myth that people
- 18:00blow out of the water and if you're going to stop Some of
- 18:03those light Williams stories. I can rip off any argument that
- 18:07you have in those stories that's actually not where I was going.
- 18:11I have a, I'm not a fan of the early Williams that was, when
- 18:15Baker started to get out of control and Williams, didn't
- 18:18really have, you know, he's a young guy.
- 18:20Didn't really have the presence. This is the biggest example that
- 18:23I can remember anything either. My pilgrimage, tweets.
- 18:26I pointed out as it goes, there are parts of planet of evil
- 18:30where he is literally, you know, asleep on the set or Just
- 18:34upstaging everyone else in the background of the scene.
- 18:37The by clearly being not dialed in and clearly not wanting to be
- 18:40there, and there's other examples scattered throughout.
- 18:43It's not just, you know, the end of the G Williams ear.
- 18:46It's not just a nightmare of Eden, but if he didn't like a
- 18:50script, it is often invisible in his performance.
- 18:53But by All rights, when here, he's at his angriest and he's
- 18:56ready to go, he could have tank the story and he doesn't.
- 19:00And is Mesmerizing the me. Yes, he was given great.
- 19:03Frances throughout, it's hard to top his intensity, and pyramids
- 19:06of mars, or the comedy in robot or is rapport with Julian Glover
- 19:11in city of death. But going back to grimwade for a
- 19:14moment. Think about the guest cast, that
- 19:16the Tom Baker is given in the story.
- 19:18The mean you have dolor, Whiteman, who is hilarious?
- 19:22She is so good. You almost wish that she was not
- 19:25confined to episode 1 hasten, your father's hog.
- 19:29Farm is not in the outback, not there and obviously this Could
- 19:33you imagine a station? We're told by Colonel.
- 19:35You Vanessa. It would have been the greatest
- 19:38season of Doctor Who you would have had people cosplaying as
- 19:42Auntie. Vanessa, a cons, the, you would
- 19:45have had the two of them doing a whole, you know, 15, big finish
- 19:48box. That's it would have been
- 19:51glorious. It would it be?
- 19:53It's hard to imagine a better to some than those two in the
- 19:55Tardis together for years and years.
- 19:57Will you indulge me just for one second because can you imagine,
- 20:00right? Make the matching like season?
- 20:0115 was Tom Baker and a media do car season.
- 20:06Teen was Tom Baker and Amelia Rumford and season 18 was Tom
- 20:10Baker. A not even s that.
- 20:12I mean, wouldn't they just be the best seasons ever?
- 20:15You imagine some of those season 19 stories, but with Tom and the
- 20:21lore Whiteman, rather than Peter Davis said in Matthew Waterhouse
- 20:25and imagine the two of them and time flight.
- 20:28I mean, I'd imagine the two of them as for to Doomsday.
- 20:32Thank land that cold in prehistoric.
- 20:35They both be there going my God, how many Whiskey's did we have
- 20:37last night? You know, that Joe?
- 20:40I have a question for you. So I was listening to your
- 20:46hamster, commentary on, Twin dilemma some time ago and you
- 20:52had made the point that Kevin me.
- 20:55Now, he would have been the great male companion and Season
- 20:5922 because there's one male pseudo companion and every
- 21:05season 22 story and they could have just put Kevin McNally in
- 21:09that spot because he and Colin Baker.
- 21:11Get on like a house on fire ant window.
- 21:13Emma and Kevin me. Now he is easily one of the best
- 21:16things about that story. Now, we are recording this two
- 21:20or three days after Village of the Angels, flux chapter 4, and
- 21:24that is Kevin McNally's. Long-awaited return to Doctor
- 21:28Who now the lower Whiteman, of course, never gets to come back.
- 21:31But what do you think of Kevin McNally?
- 21:34This last week's episode coming back in a much more sensible
- 21:38costume that he wore the last time I thought he was
- 21:41incredible, I thought His character was incredible just
- 21:44the bit where he was like yeah everyone else fights an angel
- 21:48was shitting their pants, he just goes, you are observed.
- 21:52Like hey was terrific man. Oh man chipper I mean I love Dan
- 21:56but chip off Dan this. Have Professor used to switch
- 21:58his name. Agnostics was his name, Eustace
- 22:02Jericho eustatius, Jericho and how nice that he actually got to
- 22:07appear in, you know, like a classic rather than adults.
- 22:12We, it hasn't aired yet, but we recorded the Trap one last night
- 22:18for chapter 4 and I think it was Adam, who made the point?
- 22:22This is the best Doctor, Who Story, featuring Kevin McNally,
- 22:27and I defended you and I said, Joe Ford is going to have some
- 22:31very strongly worded opinions about that, because twin dilemma
- 22:34is to Joe. What pyramids of Mars is for me.
- 22:37So when that episode comes out, there will be a nice little love
- 22:42letter to John. Go forward in the Twin dilemma
- 22:43embedded in that recording you were dressed ahh because I do
- 22:47like between Dynamic but it's not like a classic there are
- 22:52also issues there there are some issues there.
- 22:55I've got a question for you then while we're back in questions
- 22:57back and forth like a tennis match.
- 23:00What do you think about a Tardis in a Tardis in a Tardis in a
- 23:04tardis so you're cheating a little bit because you're
- 23:07looking at me on zoom and I have my cat smudge on my lap walking
- 23:11around in circles. But what is the zoom background
- 23:13behind me? Joe, what do you, what are you
- 23:14looking at? When you see me, you have a
- 23:16beautiful picture of the TARDIS inside.
- 23:19The Tardis console with the telephone hanging on its wire,
- 23:22which is literally what you've just been watching with Tom and
- 23:25Matthew doing there Tardis prop clowning.
- 23:29It is an iconic. Image and it works so well,
- 23:33especially as we get into the Tardis within the Tardis.
- 23:36The Tardis prop is so pleasing on the eye, particularly the
- 23:39shade of blue. They were using the this season
- 23:42and it looks so both natural and out of place at the same time
- 23:47and every time they go into the Tardis within the Tardis, how
- 23:52the lighting goes down, more and more as if they're kind of going
- 23:55deeper. There's darker.
- 23:58And it gets especially in the novelization.
- 24:00Where it gets colder and colder. And as you can literally see
- 24:03their breath, I would have been great if I could have put some
- 24:06frost on this artist remembering Amy's Choice when they have the,
- 24:08I started see if it had got like more like that, as it went.
- 24:11Along my confession for you, is that I've only seen Amy's Choice
- 24:16once on the day that it aired. And if I had to write a list of
- 24:19everything that I remember from Amy's choice, I probably can
- 24:22only recall about 45 seconds of it.
- 24:25Well, we'll go inside another time.
- 24:27Well, I am about to Embark upon my new series.
- 24:30Talking major, I'm doing a little Wilderness years detour
- 24:33right now and I'll be watching the new series straight through.
- 24:36I'll be watching all the stuff that I haven't seen in many
- 24:39cases and, you know, 10 or 15 years, but not trying to drag us
- 24:43bodily back until the gospels. We've talked a bit about the
- 24:47lore. Whiteman, we talked a lot about
- 24:49Peter grimwade. Let's talk about the atmosphere
- 24:52because it's not just a director doing this thing in isolation.
- 24:55I mean, they'll of the crane shot looking down on the orange
- 24:59colored Tardis console Room is Tom and Matthew were walking
- 25:02through is great. That's a great crane shot.
- 25:05Where do you think Patty Kingsland fits as the great
- 25:08incidental music composers on Doctor Who High very high?
- 25:13And I think this is one of the best schools.
- 25:16Okay. So I've got the Doctor Who 50th
- 25:18album, right? And they, the first track, I
- 25:21always play on that is, is the, it's the end.
- 25:25So, the last sequence where he's up on the tower and he's
- 25:29struggling and the whole thing right the way through so
- 25:32regeneration. Yeah.
- 25:35People criticize the radio, funny workshop for something,
- 25:37you know, very Tetris, very sort of early Super Mario.
- 25:40Brothers, I loved, I listen to music but I do think it was time
- 25:45for a change here and I think, certainly in season 18 and 19
- 25:50Patty Kingsland and Peter, how are doing striking things with
- 25:54the music? I love the Lisa Simpson and so
- 26:00many Dudley Simpson themes are endlessly.
- 26:04You know, humbler, singable Patty score is so gorgeous and
- 26:08every score he didn't was a little bit different.
- 26:10I mean, you always know when it when it's him, but his Hard Rock
- 26:13score, fits module on dead. I might need to go to, I'll do
- 26:17it again. All right.
- 26:25It sounds as if you're actually playing the guitar rather than
- 26:27just imitating one. But I'll tell you a story.
- 26:30When I was living in the Midwest for law school in the mid-1990s,
- 26:36didn't have a television. My first year, I went through an
- 26:38entire year of law school without a TV set.
- 26:40All I had was the internet and this was dial-up internet on a
- 26:452400 baud modem. So it was text only, it wasn't
- 26:48the full internet as we know it today.
- 26:50And I had my books and the new adventures would come out.
- 26:52I would get a new adventure when it will be finished with In
- 26:54about a minute and a half, then I have to wait, you know, twenty
- 26:57nine more days for the next one. But I was also on records Doctor
- 27:01Who and I had a pretty thriving, the Doctor Who fan Frank
- 27:04Community, even at that time. So there was a guy who lived up
- 27:07in Ann Arbor Michigan. He was about 45 minutes away and
- 27:10he would drive down every so often and show me a stack of
- 27:12videos. That's all I got to see the Air
- 27:14Zone solution and the devil of winterbourne and all the other
- 27:18Bill bag stuff that was cycling around at the time.
- 27:21But one of my friends it's probably the most Thoughtful
- 27:25gift that I've ever received. One of my friends Made For Me
- 27:29on/off are recording of logopolis in Castro Valley but
- 27:32just the music. Oh wow, there's occasional
- 27:35Snippets of dialogue, you know, throwing it a scene start and
- 27:38stop but it's one audio cassette.
- 27:40Double-sided, just the music from logopolis, One audio
- 27:44cassette, double-sided, just the music from Castro valve.
- 27:47I played those things almost nightly and I probably worn
- 27:51those tapes down, you know, to the point of being inaudible.
- 27:54They actually had we'll get to it in part to the theme.
- 27:57You the lookout. Police funeral theme
- 28:00doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo is the background on my answering
- 28:05machine for about a week and a half.
- 28:08And then somebody called me goes Jayson.
- 28:09Well, why do you have Funeral Home music on your answering
- 28:12machine? So I took it off.
- 28:14The music is so beautiful. And so, haunting trying a large
- 28:18portions of the score are seared upon my conscience.
- 28:21As I'm very few days go by when I don't have some petty Kings,
- 28:25In my head and you can't really say that about Mark errors.
- 28:28You can't really say that about Malcolm Clark.
- 28:30You can't really say that about most of the Doctor Who they have
- 28:34some very good scores out there. But I think Patti Kingsland for
- 28:36me is Numero Uno. You know, you know I'm going to
- 28:39disagree with you. Don't you I think Mark has is
- 28:41probably in my top three. I think his score for great
- 28:44showing the Galaxy curse of fenric and Ghostlight are out of
- 28:48this world. I'm going to agree with you to a
- 28:50point because I just finished series 26 on my pilgrimage and
- 28:55especially after cap McCulloch and his Casio keyboard and his
- 28:59hand claps. What is it?
- 29:02Don't you touch him? All right, Mark airs does
- 29:05gorgeous music but it's background music and it fits the
- 29:08scene. I don't go around humming errors
- 29:10that humming airs from our tears.
- 29:12Ha ha, let me be the worst pun ever told on the hamster with a
- 29:15blunt penknife The Heirs of heirs.
- 29:17But ripped for saying, this because macaron is always rips
- 29:21at me for saying this about Shakedown return sontarans.
- 29:24But Marquez, doesn't fantastic score in that as well.
- 29:26He was scoring. All of those sort of bb bb V
- 29:30videos in the 90s, you know, more than 30 years in the Tardis
- 29:34as well, which is got lovely music.
- 29:37I will be watching more than 30 years in the Tardis tomorrow.
- 29:40Tonight I'm doing a 20th anniversary special.
- 29:43We're recording this on November the 23rd.
- 29:45We picked this date on purpose. So tonight, for my spin-off
- 29:48podcast, I'm doing to Random episodes, The Classic series and
- 29:53I don't know which ones yet. That's tonight.
- 29:56Tomorrow night is going to be the more than 30 years and then
- 29:59Thursday, which for us is a holiday will be Shakedown.
- 30:03So I have not seen Shakedown every I've only read the
- 30:06novelization. So I don't know the score.
- 30:08So I'll keep an ear out for the score and I'll tag you in my
- 30:10Shakedown Post in two days time. You're right.
- 30:13I'll let you know what. I think of it.
- 30:14You are in for a treat. Mats are filtered and Carolina
- 30:17voters Shakedown, you've never seen in your life.
- 30:23Now, this is a small bit for Tom, George said he was
- 30:26previously in the Genesis of the Daleks.
- 30:30How do you like him in this in a small scene?
- 30:32As the detective Sergeant? I think it's one of the great
- 30:34underrated performance as He's so sardonic and so cynical, and
- 30:39he's not taking anything. Tom Baker is giving, and you
- 30:42rarely see a guest cast member, who is able to hold his own
- 30:45against Todd Baker, like that, let me see.
- 30:47In Genesis of the Daleks, it's a minor part.
- 30:50He is Garmin is number two, he's a scientist called cavalcade
- 30:53aave LL. It's a much smaller part than he
- 30:56has here, and I hear me, um, I mean he's good.
- 31:03I'm not sure if I had, if I had put him up that high other
- 31:06thing. He's like, like terrifically
- 31:08memorable, but he's very good, admittedly.
- 31:11It's a small part, but I often quote him at work.
- 31:15I'm not paid to have opinions. We'll look, that is that is the
- 31:22end of it. Episode one, would you believe?
- 31:26And you, all right. Doing barely talked about the
- 31:28content, that's all. But like you said this, It has
- 31:30evolved and sometimes we do and sometimes we don't, there's some
- 31:35of the ideas and some of the performances that I'd like to
- 31:39touch upon in episode 2. But I've got a feeling, you've
- 31:43got some names. You're going to throw out there
- 31:45to talk about more of the contributors.
- 31:47I can't wait to hear what that is.
- 31:30It has evolved and sometimes we do and sometimes we don't,
- 31:35there's some of the ideas and some of the performances that
- 31:39I'd like to touch upon in episode 2.
- 31:41But I've got a feeling, you've got some names.
- 31:43You're going to throw out there to talk about more of the
- 31:46contributors. I can't wait to hear what that
- 31:48is.
