- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show with Jim Moore.
- 0:02Speaker 2: We're just talking about Joe Ferano on Saturday against Duke,
- 0:05Speaker 2: and he's had a fabulous year. Uh, Jimmy started to
- 0:08Speaker 2: run the ball a little bit. He's taken off and
- 0:11Speaker 2: going downfield.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Some of that is decision making by him.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Obviously, you got to you got to make a call
- 0:17Speaker 2: when you have the ball in your hands and you
- 0:19Speaker 2: have to see the field. And Joe ran for sixty
- 0:22Speaker 2: or so yards and they were big ones. And you
- 0:25Speaker 2: talked about the two point conversion, which was a very
- 0:28Speaker 2: big part of the game. Uh, that's a difficult thing,
- 0:31Speaker 2: is it for a guy that's pretty much a pocket passer,
- 0:34Speaker 2: but he's able to pull the ball down and get
- 0:36Speaker 2: some key yardage running the ball.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I mean he puts a puts an added burden on
- 0:41Speaker 3: the defense. When your quarterback can get out and run,
- 0:44Speaker 3: you have to pay a little bit more attention to
- 0:45Speaker 3: him than if it's just a pure pocket passer that's
- 0:48Speaker 3: going to get stuck inside. And Joe has the ability
- 0:50Speaker 3: to extend plays and still throw it.
- 0:53Speaker 4: And now he's showing more and more win win it.
- 0:57Speaker 4: He's not he's not reckless which I really appreciate.
- 0:59Speaker 3: But when when the situation calls for it, you know,
- 1:02Speaker 3: he's done a good job with his legs and getting
- 1:04Speaker 3: us yards. And you know, the second that he breaks
- 1:07Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage and starts to run, I just
- 1:09Speaker 3: start yelling.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Get down, get down, get down, you know, because I don't.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Like quarterbacks, any quarterbacks taking hits, but especially the quarterback
- 1:17Speaker 3: that I get to coach.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So yeah, really, but he's.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Done a really good job with that. Really, And you
- 1:23Speaker 3: mentioned decision making. He's an outstanding decision maker, and that's
- 1:26Speaker 3: part of making good decisions is knowing when.
- 1:28Speaker 4: To pull it and how far to run before you
- 1:31Speaker 4: get down.
- 1:33Speaker 2: We saw Skyler Bell last night at the Yukon basketball game,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and he got a great round of applause from the crowd.
- 1:38Speaker 2: There eleven catches seventy one yards after the catch. I
- 1:44Speaker 2: don't know, Well, I'm running out of stuff to say
- 1:47Speaker 2: about this guy, but I just I'll take I'll talk
- 1:50Speaker 2: every day about him, the catches he made in the game.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I mentioned it to Lou Hanson. Actually we're gonna hear
- 1:56Speaker 2: from him in a little bit. I said, fifty to
- 1:58Speaker 2: fifty balls, Bell comes up with them all the time
- 2:00Speaker 2: he goes, they're not fifty to fifty balls.
- 2:02Speaker 1: When they throw them towards him. And I've heard that.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I thought that was a great comment.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I'd never heard. I've never heard of put that way.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You know, Skyler. Listen, Skyler's got talent.
- 2:13Speaker 4: We all know that.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I think what separates him and why he's having a
- 2:17Speaker 3: good year is his attitude and his work ethic and
- 2:21Speaker 3: the way he comes out every single day, whether it's
- 2:23Speaker 3: a practice of walkthrough with great intention to get better.
- 2:26Speaker 3: And he worked very very hard this offseason on his
- 2:29Speaker 3: body and getting bigger and more physical, and it's paying off.
- 2:32Speaker 3: He you know, I looked out Thursday last Thursday at
- 2:37Speaker 3: about six thirty and you know, I look over the
- 2:40Speaker 3: indoor and Skyler was out there with his helmet on
- 2:43Speaker 3: catching the jugs, the jugs machine, you know that the
- 2:46Speaker 3: machine that throws the ball to him. And he was
- 2:48Speaker 3: out there for about a half hour catching on the jugs.
- 2:52Speaker 3: So it doesn't just happen on Saturday without the work
- 2:54Speaker 3: that he puts in, you know, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 2:57Speaker 3: Friday and Sunday. And I just applaud him for maintaining
- 3:01Speaker 3: his focus and the commitment to the work ethic that
- 3:04Speaker 3: he has.
- 3:06Speaker 2: No coaches talk about leadership quite a bit. We're talking
- 3:08Speaker 2: to Jim Moore, Yukon football coach. That word's thrown around
- 3:12Speaker 2: quite a bit. But I always feel like when you
- 3:14Speaker 2: have a guy like Skyler Belt doing the things he
- 3:17Speaker 2: does at practice, and his teammates have told me this,
- 3:21Speaker 2: they feed off that they feed off his work ethic
- 3:24Speaker 2: and and that kind of stuff. We've seen that in
- 3:26Speaker 2: basketball with Andre Jackson and other players over the years,
- 3:30Speaker 2: with Yukon recently. You can't discount how important that is,
- 3:35Speaker 2: can you.
- 3:36Speaker 4: No people talk about leadership.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Leadership comes in all forms, like Skyler is not a
- 3:40Speaker 3: big talker, Joe's not a big talker. Cam Edwards isn't
- 3:45Speaker 3: a big talker. Wes Hose not a big talker.
- 3:48Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I'm kind of going through some guys that I think
- 3:50Speaker 3: that our players see as leaders. But they demonstrate every
- 3:55Speaker 3: single day what our standard is, and they live it
- 3:58Speaker 3: and they enforce the caulture and people want to want
- 4:03Speaker 3: to emulate them, and they hold people to a high standard,
- 4:08Speaker 3: and that's that's what being a good leader is. But Skyler,
- 4:11Speaker 3: you know, when your teammates recognize your work ethic and
- 4:14Speaker 3: your commitment. That's what makes your leader, that's what that's
- 4:18Speaker 3: what makes you stand out. That's what people want to follow.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That's who what people want to be like.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And it's contagious, isn't it. I Mean that's the part
- 4:25Speaker 2: of team sports when you get guys like that and
- 4:28Speaker 2: they rub off on.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Everybody big time, big time. Yeah, I totally agretting. It's
- 4:33Speaker 3: really contagious. I mean everyone too. I'm going to if
- 4:35Speaker 3: Skyler's doing it, I'm going to do it.
- 4:37Speaker 4: You know, I'm going to do it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Romelo Murphy had a nice game, five catches, one hundred
- 4:42Speaker 2: and ten yards seventy after catch. Boy, what a what
- 4:46Speaker 2: a second fiddle that guy is. I mean, you got
- 4:49Speaker 2: Part A with Belle, you got Part.
- 4:51Speaker 1: B with him.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And I'm not categorizing so much, but it's just nice
- 4:55Speaker 2: to have depth. And I mentioned that on the broadcast
- 4:57Speaker 2: over the weekend. You've been able to develop quality depth
- 5:00Speaker 2: on this roster and that's so key to success.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I mean having options is important offensively in your pass
- 5:09Speaker 3: game and your run game because it gives you a
- 5:11Speaker 3: wider variety of plays that you can call the people
- 5:15Speaker 3: that you can feature. If they're trying to take somebody away.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And then you know, depth at the receiver position, depth
- 5:21Speaker 3: at the running back position, depth at the defensive line position.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You know that's critical if you wanted guys to be
- 5:27Speaker 3: fresh and full go.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Late in the game.
- 5:31Speaker 3: You know, you need to be able to substitute guys
- 5:32Speaker 3: in and not have any type of drop off. And
- 5:35Speaker 3: you know, we've been able to do that largely because
- 5:41Speaker 3: there's people in this community that have made a commitment
- 5:43Speaker 3: to Yukon football in this new age where you know,
- 5:47Speaker 3: finance has become a factor and we've been able to
- 5:49Speaker 3: add some really good players that either start or give
- 5:53Speaker 3: us depth. And so it's been a group effort. In
- 5:56Speaker 3: that group is everybody that supports Yukon football.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Got to ask you this coach, this is semantics. Now
- 6:03Speaker 2: you mentioned it in your press conference. You said we
- 6:06Speaker 2: got to sweep the corners.
- 6:08Speaker 1: What does it mean exactly?
- 6:10Speaker 4: So I heard that term long ago.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Just you know, you think about when you're in the
- 6:19Speaker 3: kitchen as a kid and you know you want to
- 6:21Speaker 3: sweep the dirt in the corner because you don't really
- 6:24Speaker 3: want to reach down and you know, get every grain
- 6:27Speaker 3: out and you hope your mom doesn't see it, but eventually,
- 6:31Speaker 3: you know, eventually they noticed it. So to me, sweeping
- 6:34Speaker 3: the corners just taking care of every little detail. It's
- 6:37Speaker 3: getting every little grain of sand off the floor, it's
- 6:40Speaker 3: getting down on your knees, and it's you know, putting
- 6:42Speaker 3: your finger in the corner and making sure that you
- 6:44Speaker 3: pull everything out of that corner so that the floor
- 6:47Speaker 3: is absolutely perfectly clean. And I actually stole it from
- 6:52Speaker 3: Herm Edwards. I heard HERM say it. I'll probably say fifteen,
- 6:56Speaker 3: maybe twenty years ago. I heard HERM say you got
- 6:59Speaker 3: to sweep the corners and I asked him about it,
- 7:01Speaker 3: and I'm sure he doesn't remember it, and I've just
- 7:04Speaker 3: used it since. You know, it's just a metaphor for
- 7:07Speaker 3: taking care of the details.
- 7:09Speaker 2: That's great. And my dad was in the grocery business.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I worked for him for a while before I got
- 7:13Speaker 2: into broadcasting. He used to say stuff like that and
- 7:16Speaker 2: I didn't know what he was talking about. Now I'm
- 7:18Speaker 2: getting it years later. I mean, it really builds confidence
- 7:22Speaker 2: in a team because they know we got the details covered.
- 7:24Speaker 1: There's nothing you know that we're not going to know
- 7:26Speaker 1: about when we get in this game.
- 7:28Speaker 3: When you go on the field, knowing that you've done
- 7:30Speaker 3: everything humanly possible to prepare yourself to win, you can
- 7:35Speaker 3: cut it loose and you can play with confidence and
- 7:38Speaker 3: you can play fearless and so every week that's our goal.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And more with us, a couple more minutes with him.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Got to take a time out.
- 7:48Speaker 2: We'll be right back with more of the Yukon Football
- 7:50Speaker 2: Coaches Show on lear Field.
