Transcript
- 0:06All right. Good afternoon.
- 0:07Welcome, Miller and Condon. On a Monday, it's the Eye with
- 0:11Sports Radio Network. It kicks back into gear for the
- 0:14next 6 hours. Thanks for starting your
- 0:16afternoon with myself and Trent Condon.
- 0:19Back with me as we'll talk sports with you for the next
- 0:22couple of hours. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:24program. We'll start with Scott
- 0:26Dockerman. Trent, I forgot to send you the
- 0:27guest list by apologies. Scott Dockerman.
- 0:30We'll kick things off from The Athletic.
- 0:32He debuted his top 100 college football rivalries and as one
- 0:37would expect, there's a little pushback from different parts of
- 0:41the country, so we'll talk to Scott Dockerman on that and
- 0:44other college football related topics when he joins us at
- 0:4712:30. One O clock, Matt Snyder,
- 0:50CBSSports.com, where he covers Major League Baseball All Star
- 0:54teams announced starters were announced.
- 0:56The extras were added yesterday, so we'll talk to Matt Snyder
- 1:00about that and about obviously between the with baseball taking
- 1:05front and center stage here at 1:00.
- 1:07And then, well, Bill Seals is going to join us as he makes his
- 1:13way to Dallas. cyclonereport.com part of on three media.
- 1:17Bill Seals coming up at 1:30. He's off the Big 12 Media days.
- 1:22It's a wonderful time of the year.
- 1:23Media days have started a new era here at KX.
- 1:27And why didn't we get a snappy name, by the way, right Miller
- 1:30and Condon off the bench first quarter, Right, Miller and
- 1:37Condon. Oh well, we're just glad to be
- 1:40here. We're not real deep thinkers.
- 1:42We're not, but noon to 2 is where he'd be able to listen to
- 1:45us. But you know, I mean, the, the
- 1:48station got better. Alec Bussey, I think, is going
- 1:49to be really good at what he does.
- 1:51But it's a blow to the our show trend.
- 1:53It's a blow to our. Selfishly.
- 1:55Selfishly, yes, you know, whenever when I heard a couple
- 1:58of weeks ago that he is the leading candidate in the of the
- 2:02list of people that were, you know, potentially going to take
- 2:05that spot with Heather in the mornings, I think he'd.
- 2:08Be great. I really do.
- 2:09But for whatever reason, there's just not a lot of guys that
- 2:12cover Iowa State. I don't understand.
- 2:14I mean, we literally could a dozen Iowa guys.
- 2:18Oh. Absolutely. 15.
- 2:19Yeah, probably. 2. Yeah.
- 2:24Two. Yeah.
- 2:25The availability list is not real.
- 2:26Right, right. Well, there's, you know, there
- 2:28are a couple other guys that carry it, but the cover we we
- 2:30can't have them on or they don't want to come on and
- 2:33understandably so competing entities.
- 2:36So anyways, Bussy goes to mornings.
- 2:39He's still covering Iowa State, but he's going to be a terrific,
- 2:42terrific addition to the morning show, which is 6 to 9.
- 2:45And then Dan Patrick, you don't lose any of Patrick.
- 2:48You just get to him a little bit later.
- 2:49He's on from 9:00 until noon. Not like when we started.
- 2:53Oh God, that was awful. What, did we upset some people?
- 2:56Yeah, it wasn't our call either. It wasn't.
- 2:58We're just glad to be here. Absolutely.
- 3:00We. We.
- 3:00We. Agreed to once a week one of us
- 3:02would come in and vacuum on Sunday nights for the first.
- 3:04Few months I still do. Oh, you do.
- 3:06Yeah, yeah, I didn't realize. Well, I shouldn't have said
- 3:08anything. They let me go on that.
- 3:10But anyways, 9:00 to noon for Dan Patrick Miller and Condon
- 3:14and then off the bench with Sean and Lucas.
- 3:17They will take you until 5 overtime.
- 3:18Iowa remains 5 until 6. So before we get into sports,
- 3:22you were gone all last. Week I was.
- 3:24You went on a cruise with the family.
- 3:26Would you do it again? Absolutely.
- 3:28You had fun. It it was it was tremendous.
- 3:31It was a better experience than even I could have anticipated.
- 3:34Did you get sick? I did not.
- 3:36The kids? No.
- 3:37Tara, No. Anybody in your party?
- 3:39No. We were all good at that.
- 3:41Did you take drama? What's it called?
- 3:43Dramamine. I did on one of our little
- 3:45cruises, a boat that we were taking, I think when we were off
- 3:47to Puerto Rico on one of the excursion stops that we made.
- 3:49I think I did, just getting on that smaller boat, but that was
- 3:52the only time and I felt I'm fine.
- 3:54Never. How many steps onto the island
- 3:56of Puerto Rico did you make before someone asked you if you
- 3:58wanted to buy weed? I did not get that in one port.
- 4:02And then I. Now I have a different look.
- 4:04Maybe it's. Well, this is. 19 for me it was
- 4:0819. I went with my son's mom, OK and
- 4:11I couldn't stand or not a blast. But your eyes were your eyes
- 4:17maybe are a little more open to that where I'm oblivious to
- 4:21those. Kinds of things, yeah.
- 4:21No, I don't I. Mean, I guess like even in
- 4:23Vegas, I mean, I've been going to Vegas now for over 20 years
- 4:27and maybe I just don't have that look.
- 4:30Maybe I just or people could just sense it on me now that's
- 4:34not what this guy's looking for. He's looking for a beer.
- 4:35He's looking for a drink. He's looking for a cocktail, but
- 4:38he's not looking for that because.
- 4:40Man, we couldn't turn a corner. Now I also had the kids with
- 4:42him. But that you know what?
- 4:43Maybe that had when? He got a 10 to 5 year old and
- 4:47maybe that's a kind of a slippery slope that people don't
- 4:49want to go down and. My son still got friends here I
- 4:52shouldn't have said that and him and his mom get along.
- 4:55My ex-wife will get along great now, but anyways.
- 4:59But it was true. So, so you had fun, you're back,
- 5:02you're ready to go. Did you have Is there TV on
- 5:05these cruises now? There, there was TV in our
- 5:08cabin, OK, and we had a. Bigger watch it No right?
- 5:11I completely unplugged. No Internet there was.
- 5:16And and you didn't log on. Not often I I check scores.
- 5:20I check scores at night a couple of times, but not every night.
- 5:24It was just one of those vacations where it was a
- 5:27complete breakaway from, how about that?
- 5:30The day-to-day grind. And I enjoyed it so much.
- 5:32I've told you and for our listeners, I think everybody
- 5:34knows this. I've moved away from social
- 5:36media a lot over the last couple of years.
- 5:39It's really diminished and I think it's improvement for my
- 5:41mental health. It's just moving away from that
- 5:43component and I'm still on there, but not at the same
- 5:46degree. This same kind of thing, just
- 5:48that complete unplugged from everything going on in the
- 5:50world, not just sports wise, but just everything and I think I
- 5:53needed that. It was really good reconnect.
- 5:57Got to hang out with a bunch of my family.
- 5:58My parents were also on the cruise.
- 6:00My cousin set it up. It was for my aunt's 60th
- 6:02birthday. So how many family?
- 6:04Members were on the boat. There were, our party was, I
- 6:07think 26, Yeah. And they ended up every single
- 6:11night at O'malley's, the Irish bar on the ship.
- 6:13And Oh yeah, they, some of the people didn't have like, tap
- 6:17beer. Oh yeah, they did.
- 6:19Oh yeah, They had Heineken and Strongbow on tap, so I had
- 6:22plenty of those. It, it was incredible.
- 6:25It really was. And a, a cousin of mine, a
- 6:27distant cousin of mine whose first cousins with my dad hadn't
- 6:31seen Dave and I don't know, 30-40 years reconnect with him
- 6:36and he said he couldn't get away from how much I looked like my
- 6:38dad. So had a lot of great
- 6:39conversations. We did watch though, a couple of
- 6:41times. The sport that we 2 times got
- 6:44heavily involved in was the Indiana Fever and the WNBA.
- 6:48My uncle Danny, my cousin, his cousin from the other side of
- 6:51the family were locked in just watch it on their phone at
- 6:54O'malley's the Irish pub. Just watching those games even
- 6:57might have came on my parents locked in our flight home
- 7:00Saturday night. It was on the TV, the Sparks
- 7:03Fever game. My mom says if it's not on for
- 7:06them locally because they don't have the Quad City stations or
- 7:09what we have here, she'll watch it the next day on YouTube.
- 7:12I mean, that's, and it's incredible just seeing people
- 7:14from different parts of the state, from small parts of the
- 7:17state, how enthralled those people are.
- 7:20That's. That's good.
- 7:22The WNBA and specifically Caitlin Clark, how deep they are
- 7:26into it, I just couldn't get over that part of it.
- 7:28And my uncle, I mean, he's big guy in his 60s, loves all
- 7:32sports, never would watch women's basketball, and now on a
- 7:36cruise at O'malley's, he's got to have it on the phone to watch
- 7:38even without Caitlin Clark. Playing that's awesome.
- 7:41Oh, that's that's that's really cool good stuff.
- 7:44Well, glad you're back and we'll take it from here.
- 7:48So the program we'll have Scott Dockerman coming on the top 100
- 7:52rivalries Iowa State Iowa came in Seihawk is I think like 32
- 7:56somewhere in there right at the top.
- 7:58There's no surprise. Ohio State.
- 8:00Michigan, yeah, it's Ohio State, Michigan, then the Iron Bowl and
- 8:03don't remember what's 3 Army navies up there in the top five,
- 8:07I think #4 but anyways, so baseball moves on.
- 8:10We will do a couple of minutes on that at some point.
- 8:13Big 12 meaty days underway tomorrow.
- 8:15I've yet to find a schedule for whatever reason.
- 8:19I I've been at the Big 12. What is Big 12 sports.com trying
- 8:23to find a schedule. We'd hope to be able to bring
- 8:25you Matt Campbell live, whether it's in our show or whatever
- 8:28show that that it's in. If not, we'll record it so we
- 8:30can play that for you at some point.
- 8:34This this, this conference is going to be unbelievable.
- 8:37I think the parody, I know it's, we're going to say it a million
- 8:39times between now and probably throughout the regular season.
- 8:43It is. I just can't separate them,
- 8:46Trent. In a lot of cases, I try and I
- 8:48try. I can say, you know, I can go
- 8:50from one extreme to the other when it comes to Iowa State.
- 8:52I can get them six and six. I can get them nine and three.
- 8:54Yes, somewhere. In that range.
- 8:57You know what? You know what it kind of
- 8:58reminded me of when I was when I was looking back, the 2009 Iowa
- 9:02Orange Bowl team When. Everything went their way.
- 9:04Every single break, every crazy game.
- 9:06Yes, Stanzi throws a pick six. And what, four of those games?
- 9:09It didn't matter, right? They just would find a way.
- 9:11And then the next year happened and they were what, 7:00 and
- 9:145:00? And that was the that was the
- 9:16bowl game against Missouri, right?
- 9:18Against Gabbert. Yes, and they picked.
- 9:20Micah Hyde had picked. Hyde yeah, took it back and
- 9:23clinched that one in the Marcus Coker game is how I remember
- 9:27that one. 227 yards. Did they lose all the running
- 9:29backs that year? No, that was 04.
- 9:31That was oh. Four.
- 9:32No. That was Marcus Coker.
- 9:33No. No, no, no.
- 9:35Adam Robinson getting in trouble.
- 9:36That was 04. No, that was 09.
- 9:39That's what I thought. That was.
- 9:40But but yeah, 'cause they were down running backs because of.
- 9:44Other things Other things. Damien Sims Young was he's no,
- 9:49he might have gone at that point.
- 9:50But yeah, regardless, they haven't had a lot of luck with
- 9:52that running back position. Hopefully the tides are turning
- 9:55after last year and Caleb Johnson, that can continue.
- 9:57But you know when you bring that up, and I was stayed in the
- 10:00close games. Just picked up Phil Steele for
- 10:03you and I yesterday at Barnes and Noble and.
- 10:06Were there a good supply of them left?
- 10:08It looked like about maybe half the stack of probably 20 were
- 10:12picked over because they had like 2 kind of tiers and a stand
- 10:15alone column there of the Phil Steele and maybe 12 of the 20
- 10:20were remaining. Something like that after I
- 10:21grabbed one for each of us. But one of my favorite columns
- 10:24that he does every single year and I haven't even cracked it
- 10:26yet is Turn Around, turnover, sequel, turn around and another
- 10:30one is close losses and how over time that seems to kind of
- 10:35regulate it. Even out it does and that they I
- 10:38keep going back to 2009 Iowa when they everything went their
- 10:41way and it didn't happen the next year.
- 10:42So I when it comes to Iowa State, you know they had a lot
- 10:46of good wins last year. I just.
- 10:50Is it even out this? Year, right?
- 10:52The Iowa game, obviously could have gone the other way.
- 10:54Sure. Could have I?
- 10:55Mean it doesn't take a ton for that one.
- 10:57West Virginia hung around to that game and they pulled away
- 10:59and got the victory in that one. The game against Central Florida
- 11:03and the drive by Rocco to clinch that one, that was a coin flip
- 11:06game that went their way. The Utah game was a coin flip
- 11:08game that went their way. They had, I mean, three of
- 11:11those. You flip from the other way and
- 11:13suddenly instead of playing in the Big 12 Championship game,
- 11:16you're going to the Fort Worth ball.
- 11:17Right, right. It's true.
- 11:19And that's how quickly it can turn and it takes an injury and
- 11:23depth and offensive line. I like that offensive line this
- 11:25year more than most years coming into a season.
- 11:28However injury hits, what's the depth behind them?
- 11:31We don't know. They say that they like these
- 11:33two new receivers, but the two that they lost are both playing
- 11:36in the NFL and went back to background.
- 11:38And they've been playing this roulette with these transfers
- 11:40and they have been hitting home runs time in and time out and
- 11:42it's been landed on 7 and you got 20 chips on that seven time
- 11:46in and time out is it can happen every single time.
- 11:49Credit obviously to the way the recruit, what they're looking
- 11:51for because they have a type and it's worked out incredibly well.
- 11:55Not all of them hit. They have for them at this
- 11:57point, but there's going to be a year where it doesn't for
- 12:00whatever reason, it just doesn't hit at that level.
- 12:02You hope it's not this year. There are holes to poke that you
- 12:05can get to, like you said, 6:00 and 6:00, but then you look
- 12:07through the schedule the other way, you can get back to 1:50.
- 12:11You can win double digit games once again and those games.
- 12:13Scares me more and more that I look at it that's it's South
- 12:16Dakota, but South Dakota's not brutal.
- 12:18No, they're top 10 program at the FCS level.
- 12:21So you you go across the pond, you play K State, then you get
- 12:24on the airplane, you come right back here, and then you got to
- 12:26get ready for South Dakota. Yeah, and.
- 12:28You don't think there'll be a let down in that game?
- 12:30And they'll look ahead with Iowa.
- 12:31And they'll look ahead with Iowa.
- 12:32The fact that there's no bye week between, I mean, I don't, I
- 12:36don't know what the scheduling would have allowed, but the fact
- 12:40that's that there's you get back and you're preparing for South
- 12:43Dakota, I guess on the plane. Oh, absolutely right.
- 12:47And what does that do? They get on the plane right
- 12:48after the game in Ireland like you would for a normal Rd. game
- 12:52where you just hop on the plane and you head back?
- 12:53Or is it different? I don't think it can be.
- 12:57You can't have any kind of flexibility.
- 12:58You just got to get on the plane and go because you're playing
- 13:00the following Saturday. Is K state off the following
- 13:03week? No, they play too I'm pretty
- 13:04sure. Do they?
- 13:05I think they do. Yeah, that's a weird 1, isn't?
- 13:07It no, it is K State plays. Yeah, they come right back North
- 13:11Dakota. Wow.
- 13:13OK. We got a couple of Dakotas they
- 13:15do coming in for. That when they get Army the
- 13:17following week. Meanwhile, Iowa State gets Iowa
- 13:19in the Cyhawk battle. Anyways.
- 13:22So Big 12 media days get underway tomorrow.
- 13:25Anxious to hear from Campbell. Some of the players, they're
- 13:27going down, some of the coaches as well.
- 13:30Won't burden you by putting those on the air.
- 13:31But if Campbell does air during our program or just before that,
- 13:35we'll find a way to to download that audio and bring it to you
- 13:39as part of Miller and Condon tomorrow.
- 13:42But again, I haven't been able to find just a schedule yet.
- 13:45All right, so let's talk a little bit of baseball.
- 13:47Looking forward to catching up with Matt Snyder.
- 13:49I don't really want to break down the All Star game.
- 13:51I mean, there's, there's certainly snubs.
- 13:53Suzuki's got to be a yeah. Right.
- 13:55I mean, and then, well, OK, so maybe I don't want to break
- 13:58down, but this one thing. So Yahoo Sports, I don't know if
- 14:02they're into baseball or they came up with an all snub team
- 14:05and Suzuki got snubbed from the snub team.
- 14:07A double blow, a double double whammy for say, a Suzuki boy.
- 14:13They just pounded the baseball last night.
- 14:15This team is so fun to watch. What are you?
- 14:17If you're the Cardinals, what are you about to do here?
- 14:19What are you about to embark on? They're playing.
- 14:22This was supposed to be a rebuild year.
- 14:24And here's why I ask it in the fashion that I'm about to John
- 14:27Mazelock, he said that GM walking sure, this is his last
- 14:32year, so are they going to allow him to make moves at the trade
- 14:35deadline? It's an intriguing.
- 14:37Question, right, Because he's out the door in two months.
- 14:40Yes, absolutely. And I think something is
- 14:42Cardinal fans you have to be concerned about.
- 14:44He's not worried about the. Future.
- 14:45No, absolutely not. He there is no future for.
- 14:48Him he wants to go out a winner he wants so is he going to be
- 14:52the guy that's going to how much sign off?
- 14:54And this is what we don't know how much sign off is there
- 14:56normally with the ownership group?
- 14:58Yes, financials, that's a part of it.
- 15:00But also I'm sure there's big picture things that are also
- 15:03there, you know, is an assistant GM have they named an heir
- 15:06apparent? I think.
- 15:07They have named an heir apparent, but apparently there's
- 15:10a little friction there. OK.
- 15:11And he got that component to it also.
- 15:14That's going to be interesting and something that I think we
- 15:16need to. I don't leave it in, I don't
- 15:18leave it up to him, Trent. The reason I think it's
- 15:21intriguing is because my own team, the Twins, have a similar
- 15:24circumstance as even to get back to 500 by the break, they got to
- 15:29play like 600 baseball here and they're remaining whatever it
- 15:31is, 18 games or whatever it is. You have an ownership group that
- 15:36wants to sell. That's not going well.
- 15:39You have the last three years when they're a lot better shape
- 15:42than they are this season, a team that went out and did
- 15:45nothing. Does it make more sense to get
- 15:48rid of Willie Castro? Can you find somebody to take
- 15:51Korea? But if you do that, with the
- 15:53ownership group likely changing hands, there's no guarantee that
- 15:58the front office is going to be there that is making these
- 16:00decisions. Do you want a front office that
- 16:04is maybe kind of plain for their lame career, making a decision
- 16:08on what to do with Royce Lewis, if there is a suitor for Royce
- 16:11Lewis and then we can get him fixed?
- 16:13Do you want maybe same thing that GM walking to be making
- 16:17those decisions? The Twins and the Cardinals are
- 16:19in a similar spot, different reasons for it.
- 16:22One GM. Cards are closer to a wild card
- 16:24than the twins are at this point.
- 16:25They are. And those are the different
- 16:28difficult conversations, though, and something that goes along
- 16:31right, deeper than just surface level when you're thinking about
- 16:34these decisions just not let's get our team better.
- 16:36There's a lot more that goes into it and something sometimes,
- 16:39probably you and I miss. Yeah.
- 16:41No, that's a fairpoint. The Kards Cup series was fun.
- 16:45A nice win by the Cardinals coming back on on Saturday to
- 16:47get that 8/6 with Kate Horton was phenomenal this weekend.
- 16:51Matthew Boyd last night. What a story Matthew Boyd is.
- 16:54He really is 34 years old now. I remember you and I talking
- 16:58about him because I think I asked you, who the hell is this
- 17:00guy after the one of the Cleveland playoff games last
- 17:03time. And I remember watching this
- 17:05lefty because I had no idea who it was.
- 17:07And he pitched really well. And I we came in here, we, you
- 17:10know, talking about the playoff games the night before.
- 17:13And I asked Trent what he knew about him.
- 17:14And I don't think he knew much about him, but man, oh, man, the
- 17:19league is finding out about him. He has been unbelievable to
- 17:23watch. All right, let's take our
- 17:25baseball conversation brings Benny into the old hello
- 17:29baseball. Benny, how are you?
- 17:31I am doing absolutely fantastic. Yeah.
- 17:34The successor's been named the former GM of the Boston Red Sox
- 17:38got let go in 2023. Shane Bloom, who started his
- 17:42career, who started his career with the Tampa Bay Devil race.
- 17:45So. And there is a little friction
- 17:47between him and Mazelak, right? I read that somewhere.
- 17:51And you could be totally correct on that, but Mazebak should be
- 17:54making no moves. He's terrible as AGM.
- 17:57He should have been let go before this.
- 17:58He shouldn't even have a swan song.
- 18:00The guy that should be running it, I, I don't care if it was
- 18:03last year. Chain Bloom needs to be in
- 18:04charge of the decision making. Whether it's for this year or
- 18:08five years from now. They they, I don't think they
- 18:10have a chance to win in the playoffs whether they make it.
- 18:13So go get rid of fellas play. Go get rid of Aaron Ottawa.
- 18:16They'll sign off on his no trade and just blow it out because
- 18:20that their young players still have not fully turned it all on
- 18:24and they're just not not in it for a long haul.
- 18:27This year. They're two or three years away
- 18:29and they still need to get Jordan Walker straightened out
- 18:32and a couple of the other a good young guys still have to
- 18:34improve. Shoot, if they could get
- 18:36something for Nolan Gorman, I'd show him the door as well.
- 18:39Yeah, Betty, thanks for the call.
- 18:40Appreciate it. Have a good good to talk to you
- 18:43baseball, Benny, on a little baseball conversation here.
- 18:47Yeah. We'll see where it goes.
- 18:49The Cubs won third baseman. So do a lot of teams.
- 18:52I know the Yankees are in the market.
- 18:53Well wait, wait, I asked Kathy about that a month ago and he
- 18:56shot that down that there is no chance they wanted 1/3 baseman.
- 18:59They have their third. Yeah, he was hitting 250 to 60
- 19:02at the time. Now he's not right down by the
- 19:03Mendoza like he plays defensively, he's fine.
- 19:06He's I made a play last couple of plays last night, couple
- 19:10plays over the weekend. He's really good glove man at
- 19:13the hot corner, but he's just not hitting his way.
- 19:15They want to Brian Hayes, he's going to be a hot commodity.
- 19:18Apparently the Pittsburgh Pirates Sonic Charlie Hayes, who
- 19:22was a good third baseman in his own right.
- 19:24But key Brian Hayes is a name that Cubs are going to go after.
- 19:27The Yankees are going to go after a couple of playoff teams
- 19:30that are shopping around him this trade deadline.
- 19:32I mean, I wonder what teams are waiting for.
- 19:34You know what? Be first.
- 19:36Get out there. Get it done.
- 19:37Well, outside of the Rockies and a guy like Ryan McMahon, some
- 19:41bullpen arms. There's a couple of pieces
- 19:43there. Yep, Pirates brought up Haze.
- 19:46That makes a whole lot of sense. But you go through are the
- 19:50Braves going to sell pieces? They should.
- 19:52They're hopelessly out of it. Nationals.
- 19:55Well, they've already started it, firing both the GMs and
- 19:58Davey Martinez. I get the Davey Martinez thing.
- 20:00Rizzo, the GM. And and maybe.
- 20:02This is like Mozeloch. Yeah.
- 20:04You don't want him in charge of the draft, which is Wednesday.
- 20:06Is it this? It's this.
- 20:08Weekend sounds right. Yeah, it's this.
- 20:09Weekend and they fire the guy that's going to run the draft.
- 20:14Yeah, Timing wise, Right. OK, so the Braves should sell.
- 20:20Should sell. I agree the Twins should sell.
- 20:24What about the Royals? Should sell.
- 20:27Guardians. Yeah, Sell.
- 20:29I think so too. We know their financial
- 20:31situation and and they've been able to keep it together with
- 20:34Scotch tape for a long time. True.
- 20:36But now the time is now, right, Jose Ramirez become available.
- 20:41I mean, do you go with that? Tear it down?
- 20:43How old is he? That's a great question.
- 20:45He has been hitting for a is he going to be a Hall of Famer?
- 20:50He's still got work to do. Obviously.
- 20:53Jose Ramirez is 32 career numbers.
- 20:59This does not have them added up.
- 21:00I will find them. But Jose Ramirez, first
- 21:05contract, right? I think you got to look at that
- 21:06first. What does he still have
- 21:07remaining on his contract as he's doing it again this year?
- 21:10Just another outstanding season. His contract is 7 years, $141
- 21:16million signed in 2022. That means four years left, four
- 21:20years left. He's 32.
- 21:22He'll be 36 at the end of the contract. 21 million next year,
- 21:2623 and then 25. Yeah, Yeah, I, I with three
- 21:31years remaining at that production at 32 years old, I
- 21:34mean, that's, if you're going to tear it down, that is a building
- 21:38block, a guy that has position flexibility, a guy that always
- 21:41hits, that would be the biggest name to come on the market,
- 21:45wouldn't it? Is there a bigger?
- 21:49Is there a pitcher? He'd certainly be in the
- 21:56conversation. He'd certainly be in the here's
- 22:00a here's a big name for you that that I wonder if they'll do the
- 22:02right thing or I wonder if he'd even want to move.
- 22:05What about Mike Trout? That's that's an intriguing one.
- 22:10Now the angels are hanging around.
- 22:11Well, they they are and they aren't.
- 22:13They're on the periphery, right right of the playoff race, three
- 22:17games under 504 1/2 back in the wild card is that.
- 22:20All the ARS 4 1/2. They'd have to jump the Rangers,
- 22:23the Red Sox and then whoever else to get there, Mariners and
- 22:26Rays in order to get to that point.
- 22:28Doesn't seem likely. Mike Trout, Be nice to see him
- 22:31in the playoffs. I'll say even at a diminished
- 22:34Mike Trout, to see him be able to be out there and to get some
- 22:37playoff baseball, that would be 1.
- 22:39But who would you rather have, Mike Trout or Jose Ramirez?
- 22:42I'll make. How old's Mike Trout?
- 22:46He's been around longer than you think.
- 22:48Yes, absolutely. Mike Trout is da, da, da. 33
- 22:53years. OK, another year, but a lot more
- 22:56wear and tear. Yeah.
- 22:57On that body. Yeah, he's been injured a lot.
- 22:59I'll I'll give you the name of third base.
- 23:01How about Suarez from the from the Diamondbacks?
- 23:03I like he's he's going to be confident.
- 23:05Did he make the All Star team? He.
- 23:06Had to. He did.
- 23:07Yeah, I'm. I'm almost positive I saw him
- 23:09when I was going through the list last night.
- 23:11Yeah, he's had an outstanding season.
- 23:13Baltimore has to sell. But who are they gonna sell it?
- 23:16Because everybody's younger. Right, right.
- 23:18Outside of those crappy pictures they warned me about before the
- 23:20season, I wasn't listening, no. You should have.
- 23:23I know I have to listen to you on the Rangers Not Dead Yet.
- 23:26No, they got they got a pulse. Anyways, we'll talk to Scott
- 23:30Dockerman next. He's got a really conversation
- 23:33starter. The top 100 rivalries when it
- 23:36comes to college football. Cyhawk checked in at #32 Iowa
- 23:41State, K states on there. Of course, the Iowa rivals are
- 23:44on there. By the way, Tom Kegger, did you
- 23:46listen on Fridays or this week, this past week, on Wednesday,
- 23:49his did you see his fearless forecast?
- 23:51Was it 9 and three or ten and two, nine and three, nine and
- 23:54three? The only quote rival civil
- 23:56regame he's got them losing is the Nebraska game that.
- 24:01'D be a Stinger at 9:00 and 2:00 going into that one with.
- 24:05Where would Nebraska be? I would like to know that in
- 24:07Tom's scenario. Seven and six or seven and four
- 24:107. And four at that point, yeah,
- 24:12yeah, probably. Where I see him?
- 24:15I I think that that's fair. But with a potential College
- 24:18Football Playoff berth on the line in.
- 24:20Nebraska with a chance to knock them out and do so at Memorial
- 24:24Stadium in Lincoln on Black Friday.
- 24:26Boy, that would be a massive, massive game, no doubt about it.
- 24:30Well, we'll see. We'll talk to Tom on Friday
- 24:32about that. He joins in his regular spot.
- 24:34Scott Doctorman is next. We're underway on a Monday.
- 24:39It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network, by the way, before we
- 24:41go to break transfer. Almost forgot to do this.
- 24:43Got to be retrained after a long week.
- 24:45The weekend, Boy, that four day weekend was nice.
- 24:48It really was. Yeah, we're going to have to
- 24:49work on Labor Day, but this was well worth it.
- 24:53KX no.com. Right now, the keyword pop.
- 24:56The keyword pop up box will appear in the pop up box.

- 25:09Miller and Condon. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:11Network. I just passed 1230 Miller in
- 25:20Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:22Trent Condon and Ken Miller were with you until 2 off the bench
- 25:26at that time, 2 until 5:00 with Sean and Lucas.
- 25:29Scott Dockerman from The Athletic.
- 25:31He's been busy putting together his top rivalries, top 100 in
- 25:35college football and the noted Michigan fan Scott Dockerman
- 25:40joins the program. Hello Doc.
- 25:42That was a new one. I'm guessing you hadn't been
- 25:44accused of being a Wolverine fan in a while, have you?
- 25:47No, that ones a brand new one. I'm really surprised to be
- 25:51called a Michigan fan, but I guess I'll have to reevaluate my
- 25:55loyalties. You're going.
- 25:57So you knew it was going to be pushed back that that's what's
- 26:00great about some of these pieces that you want.
- 26:02You want the feedback positive or negative, I guess just you
- 26:07know, following on XS. I do it seems to be the Backyard
- 26:10Brawl was, correct me if I'm wrong, maybe generated the most
- 26:15pushback from fans of that rivalry.
- 26:17Or is there another one that that those fan bases thought
- 26:21that they were shortchanged? Primarily the Backyard Brawl, as
- 26:25you said, and unfortunately when we did a graphic, they had the
- 26:29top 25 out of my top 100. It it was 26, the backyard
- 26:35brawl. And so when primarily West
- 26:39Virginia fans really came strong at me.
- 26:41But you know, the The thing is, what I discovered the most in
- 26:46this whole process is when you take about rivalries 35 or so to
- 26:5215. It is really difficult to
- 26:55differentiate it from a 20,000 foot view because you know,
- 26:58locally Iowa State is a big deal.
- 27:01You go to Oregon, it's the Civil War Apple Cup, the clubs in
- 27:05South Carolina, all of them have these in state or border
- 27:08rivalries that are just incredible.
- 27:11And some have better nicknames than the others.
- 27:13But I'm not, I didn't really wasn't interested in saying, Oh,
- 27:16well, this one should be ranked higher because it's called the
- 27:18Backyard Brawl or whatever. So then I started evaluating it
- 27:21on things like how many times have they met as ranked
- 27:24opponents? What's the disparity in wins and
- 27:26losses? How many times have they met for
- 27:29really important games, you know, whether it's top 10 or
- 27:31division or conference championship games.
- 27:34And that was really what kind of propelled me in a lot of those
- 27:40specific rankings to, to, to really kind of go forward.
- 27:45And I think locally and there were some surprises.
- 27:48And then the Backyard Brawl fell a lot because they'd only had 6
- 27:51ranked matchups in 107 games, No top 10s.
- 27:54They, they didn't play from 2012 to 2021.
- 27:58They don't they don't play in the next three years after this
- 28:00year. It's like you compare that with
- 28:03Clemson SC, for instance. It's it's they'll brainer.
- 28:06I mean they play every year. You know, they're non conference
- 28:08opponents. So and then there are a lot of
- 28:11them like that. Some are in conference, some are
- 28:13not the Cyhawk. So originally I did an original
- 28:18list just kind of going in to give me kind of a barometer and
- 28:21then I move things around actually was a little higher
- 28:23than I than I'd planned. And but there was only one
- 28:26ranked match up. And, and so when you, when you
- 28:29kind of look at that and you evaluate it against say,
- 28:32Michigan, Michigan State where you know, they're what, 19 or
- 28:35something like that. I mean, it's just, it's, it's
- 28:37kind of hard to, to do it just strictly on passion alone
- 28:40because everybody's passionate about their rivalries.
- 28:43So that was, you know, at least I had something to fall back on
- 28:48other than just vibes. A lot of pushback I saw in the
- 28:50comments section a place I try to stay away from for the most
- 28:53part in the Wisconsin, Minnesota rivalry.
- 28:56Here in the upper Midwest, we know what that means.
- 28:58Paul Bunyan's axe, a huge part of it, trying to chop down the
- 29:01goal posts afterwards, after you steal that axe.
- 29:03There's always great theater involved there.
- 29:05Would that be the one that you thought maybe at least at the
- 29:08regional front you got the most pushback on on your list?
- 29:12Probably. I did get some there.
- 29:14And, and a lot of it is comparing the their rivalry to
- 29:17that one. And, and it it's understandable
- 29:20if you look at it from like, say a national prominence kind of
- 29:23view. But you know, Wisconsin and
- 29:25Minnesota is the most played rivalry in college football
- 29:28history. It's tied.
- 29:30It's not like Wisconsin has got 85 wins and the, you know, 40 to
- 29:358 or something like that. I mean, it's tied but 6363 to 8.
- 29:41They have played some prominent games.
- 29:43They have played some divisional championship caliber games and
- 29:47you know, they and again, nicknames and trophies, I try to
- 29:50keep out of it, but they do play for one of the coolest trophies
- 29:52in college football. And I mean when when they played
- 29:55every year since 19 O 7, which no other series can claim to do
- 30:01and they started in 1890. It's really important.
- 30:04It's indelible to the sport. And so I felt like even though
- 30:07some other rivalries had bigger, more important games than that
- 30:11one in particular, just because of the longevity and the
- 30:13frequency and the importance for their conference in their region
- 30:18was just a little bit stronger than a few others that were
- 30:21certainly better at the national level.
- 30:24What's the newest rivalry doc? Was it UCF South?
- 30:27Florida, that one is pretty new. I mean, it's all it's all kind
- 30:33of relative to some extent. And I did a side piece on
- 30:37rivalries to watch and, and that that was my story came out a
- 30:41couple of hours later, you know, through realignment.
- 30:45What were some of them? And I had West Virginia,
- 30:47Cincinnati on that list. I had, you know, the one that
- 30:51really sticks, sticks out for me that I would like to see happen
- 30:54is Arkansas, Oklahoma. They haven't played at a home
- 30:58environment since 1926. They've only played three times
- 31:03since then and they've all been in bowls and you think about it,
- 31:05you know, they're not very far apart.
- 31:07They're now in the same league. I think that would be a really
- 31:10interesting rivalry in the region.
- 31:12And then, you know, Houston TCUI had in there and then a few
- 31:15others. So, you know, UCFUSF that's, you
- 31:20know, the war on I-4. That was that's one that I just
- 31:23for some reason, I don't think it's going to just fade away.
- 31:25I think it's going to resurface. Maybe it's in the Big 12 at some
- 31:28point or whatever structure goes forward in the twenty 30s, but
- 31:33that would probably be new. But you know, we had, I had five
- 31:37Iowa ones, 2 Iowa State ones. Yeah, right.
- 31:43And that one's surging. So I I think and then Iowa, Penn
- 31:47State was one that, you know, it's again, it's more of an
- 31:51organic competitive rivalry than it is some sort of historic one.
- 31:55Like, yeah, if I would have picked it with Purdue or
- 31:57Illinois, James Franklin keeps flaming the flames a little bit
- 32:01faded the flames that one keeps building up as it did a couple
- 32:04of years back. Also, when you're going through
- 32:07this list, you know, historic rivalries that we have no more
- 32:09because of conference realignment.
- 32:11Obviously the PAC 12 that falling apart, not going to see
- 32:14those yearly with the biggest 1, though, that we don't get
- 32:16anymore be Oklahoma and Nebraska.
- 32:19That's one for me definitely sits up there towards the top of
- 32:22the list before it morphed into Colorado, Nebraska on Black
- 32:25Friday. But for me in the 80s, I mean,
- 32:27that was the game. It was one of the two or three
- 32:30greatest rivalries in college football history up until
- 32:33probably the formation of the Big 12 through the Big Eight
- 32:37era. It every year it mattered every
- 32:39year the winner was probably going to go to the Orange Bowl
- 32:41and and have a chance of the national title.
- 32:44I mean, they 18 times they've met in the top ten.
- 32:47That's that's the second most, tied for the second most.
- 32:50And they really have only played a couple of times since Nebraska
- 32:54moved on out of the the Big 12. So it's still a historic
- 32:58rivalry, and it's one that, you know, I debated with because it
- 33:02is dormant. And, you know, then the interest
- 33:04isn't as strong, even though there's a lot of nostalgia
- 33:08associated with it. But that would be one that you
- 33:10kind of look at and go, wow, it'd be nice to have something
- 33:13like that again. But the stakes will never be as
- 33:16high as they once were. And I think, you know, not to
- 33:19speak for Nebraska fans because I know that they would want me
- 33:22to, but I'm a Michigan man now. Oh, you know, so I'm like in
- 33:29there with Steve Fisher, right? But I would say that Nebraska,
- 33:35even though it was kind of a respectful rivalry with
- 33:37Oklahoma, I mean, they they saw they're very competitive, but
- 33:42they did not like Colorado and they do not like Colorado.
- 33:45And I think they feel the same way about Iowa too.
- 33:47And, and so I think those two were, you know, kind of headed
- 33:51in a different direction because for the 90s, Nebraska, Colorado
- 33:55was outstanding theories. Historically, it's not.
- 33:58But then and then, you know, likewise, this is the kind of
- 34:02the trajectory I also kind of used in some of my rankings.
- 34:05Just Nebraska, Iowa to me probably has the highest upside
- 34:09for the Hawkeyes and the Huskers for that matter, that it's just
- 34:12when are they going to play a game that matters to both of
- 34:15them equally with something major at stake?
- 34:17We thought for by now it would have happened.
- 34:20You know, when they're in the West Division that maybe they're
- 34:22going to have a take all W division title.
- 34:24It never happened. But I think if they can get to
- 34:27that point where hey, they can get to the play end game to go
- 34:30to the to go to the playoff or something like that, I think
- 34:33that could be one that really takes off.
- 34:35And and the one that really had the highest trajectory out of
- 34:38the ones I did was Washington, Oregon.
- 34:40I think now that they're in a last weekend rivalry and they
- 34:45don't have their in state foes, I think that one's going to take
- 34:47off and be one of the most important ones in the country.
- 34:50You mentioned the possibility I win Nebraska, maybe playing to
- 34:53get into that play in Big 10 game.
- 34:55Where are we on that front? And Tony Petitti has been
- 34:58incredibly quiet. He's been talking a little bit
- 35:00more. But where are we with the SEC
- 35:02and the Big 10 trying to come back to an agreement of what the
- 35:05future of the College Football Playoff looks like?
- 35:07Well, that, that remains to be seen, Trent, because, you know,
- 35:11I did a story last week with my colleague Seth Emerson, who
- 35:14covers the SEC and, and Georgia and to extent.
- 35:17And it's just on the different philosophies between the two
- 35:20leagues. I mean, the SEC has never been
- 35:22fearful of coming out vocally and, and expressing what they
- 35:26want and, and it's paid off for them.
- 35:28It has for years. And they've been able to back it
- 35:31up on the field as well. But then you look at the Big 10
- 35:35and this quiet structure here, it really doesn't serve them
- 35:39very well. I mean, you think going back to
- 35:42late January that they had a lot of swagger, they had a lot of
- 35:46equity. You know, they won the national
- 35:48title. They they won, you know what, 5
- 35:50out of six games had to head in the post season with the SEC,
- 35:54second year in a row, they won a championship.
- 35:56They could have really been strutting and they could have,
- 35:58you know, pushed forth their plans, you know, But instead
- 36:01they decided to take the, the a shallow approach and sit right
- 36:05back and not say anything and then and then haven't been
- 36:09assertive. So at this point, it, it's going
- 36:12to take some time. They're they're going to have,
- 36:14they're going to wait and it doesn't, they don't have to say
- 36:17what they need to be, you know, whether it's a 16 team playoff
- 36:20or 12 team playoff till December.
- 36:22So my anticipation is they're going to let this kind of ride
- 36:25for a little bit and then the big 10 will go back and, and
- 36:30suggest that they go to that, you know, qualifying style of of
- 36:35bracket. But I don't know that right now
- 36:38that they have enough, they have enough juice to get it done And,
- 36:42and it's all self owned. They they ruined it themselves.
- 36:46Doc, my last thing for you, how I, I'm guessing when you, when
- 36:50you started putting them on paper, obviously #1 and #2 came
- 36:53very quickly, right? Ohio State, Ohio State,
- 36:56Michigan, Auburn, AL. When did it start to get a
- 37:00little tricky that you started moving stuff around?
- 37:04Oklahoma, Texas three Army Navy 4?
- 37:07When did you come to a point where you started to really you
- 37:09have to put your thinking cap on, if you would.
- 37:13I started this process in March that was kind of researching all
- 37:17of the, the rivalries. And I mean, I went through 150
- 37:20or more because there's a lot of D threes and D twos and, and FCS
- 37:24ones that really matter too. And you're going to figure that
- 37:27in and, and I was really just trying to, I put them in a
- 37:31workable list. I hit up a lot of my colleagues
- 37:33and OK, what do you think of Miami series?
- 37:35What do you think of Louisville guys who've covered them for a
- 37:38long time? And and then I got I kind of
- 37:42right around Memorial Day, I had a blueprint and this is like my
- 37:45top 100, I think. But then I started it from 100
- 37:50and went to one as opposed to the other way around because I
- 37:55wanted to make sure that, well, first, by the time I got I
- 37:59ended, I'd probably have a little bit more life the tank
- 38:01writing about Michigan, Ohio State and NC State, you know, or
- 38:06something. But but then also it I did move
- 38:11a lot around from that initial to the land.
- 38:14Probably only about 19 stayed the same.
- 38:17And really at the very end, I would say of the top three, two
- 38:22and three were almost inseparable.
- 38:25I really struggled with that one because Texas and Oklahoma by
- 38:29the numbers are better than everybody else except for
- 38:31Michigan, Ohio State. I mean, most ranked matchups,
- 38:34most, you know, top 10 matchups. I mean, you know, the list goes
- 38:38on and on. But you know, then he got
- 38:40Auburn. AL have had some real incredible
- 38:42games. It's an incredibly passionate
- 38:45state. And I guess I look at it this
- 38:47way, if they, if they thrive in the SEC, Oklahoma and Texas and
- 38:52Auburn continues to kind of wallow where it is, then then
- 38:55it's got a chance to pass it up. But, but Auburn, AL, just the,
- 38:59you know, the, the everything associated with it just made it
- 39:02hard to move. But, but I would say through
- 39:04the, the, the most difficult, without question, the most
- 39:07difficult section for me to go through was about 35 to 15.
- 39:12Because you had all those in state rivalries and those border
- 39:14rivalries and you know, the backyard brawl, the Holy War,
- 39:18the Civil War, Cyhawk, all of them.
- 39:20And they all matters so much locally, you know.
- 39:23And so for in Des Moines, nobody cares about background yard
- 39:26brawl and Pittsburgh only cares about Psyhawk.
- 39:29So how do I make that work? And I would say individually,
- 39:33the most difficult game by far to place was Bedlam because it's
- 39:37got remarkable numbers in so many areas.
- 39:41But it's the second greatest disparity in wins and losses of
- 39:44any series in the in college football history next to
- 39:47Oklahoma, Iowa State. So it's it was really that one
- 39:52was really hard to play. Glad the Ivy League made it,
- 39:54Harvey, Yale, Harvard, Yale coming into 20.
- 39:56Good stuff. Hey, Doc, Rod of Time, well
- 39:58done. That's a huge, huge lift for you
- 40:01to pull that together. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
- 40:04with us here this morning on Miller and Conn Scott.

- 40:27Look forward to that real quick. When you were gone a
- 40:30reclassification Trey Thompson could have joined the Hawk.
- 40:33It's pretty big get. Trent, not just a big get, they
- 40:36wanted front court help, but also seeing how upset Purdue
- 40:39fans have been about this. A guy that for the last couple
- 40:43of years people just anticipated was going to be a Boilermaker.
- 40:45Never committed to them, but that was kind of the industry
- 40:48understanding he was going to be a Boilermaker.
- 40:50That's not happening. I don't think he's an impact
- 40:53guy, but he's a guy that can help 1215 minutes a game.
- 40:55Will they beat Tennessee, Purdue, Yukon amongst the
- 40:58others? Kansas was involved.
- 41:00That's some blue bloods. Ray McCaffrey wasn't doing that.
- 41:02No, that's true. Hour 2 is coming up.
- 41:05Baseball with Matt Snyder, Bill Seals on his way to Big 12.
- 41:09Meaty days, 130 trench plays of the day are back.
