Latest / Fostering Faith / Prayer Beyond Polished Words: Meeting God Honestly
Transcript
- 0:01Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We are in week
- 0:03three of September and in this episode we are
- 0:06calling it Prayer Beyond Polished Words, Meeting
- 0:09God Honestly. And so in this episode we are going
- 0:12to be talking about prayer is not performance,
- 0:15a formula or a way to pressure God into giving
- 0:19us what we want. It is communion with our Father
- 0:21through the Son in this power of the Spirit.
- 0:24In this episode we're going to be talking about
- 0:26Psalms. Jesus' teaching, Gethsemane, to show
- 0:29listeners how to pray honestly, lament faithfully,
- 0:34and listen humbly, and to trust God when answers
- 0:38are delayed or different than what we expected.
- 0:41And so welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am
- 0:43your host, Tracy, and we are going to be in week
- 0:45three of our series, Rooted. The faith it holds.
- 0:50We have talked about abiding in Christ and being
- 0:52formed in Scripture, and today we're going to
- 0:54be talking about prayer. Not polished prayer,
- 0:57not public prayer, or prayer that sounds and
- 0:59presses. We are talking about honest prayer.
- 1:03And some people avoid prayer because they believe
- 1:05that they are bad at it. They hear someone pray
- 1:08this beautiful language and think, I do not know
- 1:11how to do that. And others pray, but they edit
- 1:17themselves. They give God, the church, the vision
- 1:19of the story while angry, fear, grief, and disappointment
- 1:23stay hidden underneath. that God is not intimidated
- 1:27by the truths of your heart, because He already
- 1:29knows it. Prayer is not informing God. It is
- 1:33opening ourselves to Him. And so Jesus says in
- 1:36Matthew 6 that the Father knows what we need
- 1:38before we ask. He teaches us, His disciples,
- 1:42how to pray. And if God allows and already knows,
- 1:46then why pray? Like, why even bother? Like, why
- 1:47am I going to talk to you? Because it's about
- 1:50prayer. And if you already know, then why am
- 1:52I even going to pray? Because prayer is not mainly
- 1:55the transfer of information. It's relationship.
- 1:59It's the alignment. It's the dependence. It is
- 2:01where our hearts learn to say, your kingdom come,
- 2:05your will be done. And so let's pray. Father,
- 2:09teach us how to pray. Remove the fear that we
- 2:12have to impress you. Meet the listeners who feel
- 2:16unheard. The one who is tired of waiting. The
- 2:20one who does not want and know what to say. Holy
- 2:24Spirit, help us in our weakness and turn our
- 2:27attention towards Jesus. And we pray this in
- 2:30your name. Amen. And so God can handle your honesty.
- 2:35And so Psalm gives us a vocabulary of real prayers.
- 2:39They praise, confess, celebrate, question, protest,
- 2:44remember, and lament. Psalm 13 begins, how long,
- 2:48Lord? Will you forget me forever? That is in
- 2:53the Bible. God gives his people words for moments
- 2:56when his presence feels hidden. Lament is not
- 3:00disbelief or unbelief. Lament is pain brought
- 3:03into a relationship with God. Cynicism turns
- 3:06a wave and says nothing matters. Lament turns
- 3:10towards God and says this matters and I need
- 3:13you here. David often moves through this pattern.
- 3:18He names his pain asks boldly for help and remembers
- 3:21God's character and chooses to trust. The prayer
- 3:25does not deny the wound. It refuses to let the
- 3:28wound have the final word. And some of us have
- 3:32learned that faith means never sounding sad.
- 3:36And that is trash. No, absolutely not. We have
- 3:40learned that if you are a follower of Christ,
- 3:42you're supposed to be happy and perky. No, absolutely
- 3:44not. He never said that. He literally said, that
- 3:47you're going to have trials and tribulations
- 3:48in life. And so we quote promises before we had
- 3:51admit that we've had a broken heart. But Jesus
- 3:54wept, Jesus groaned. He sweated blood in Gethsemane
- 3:58and his soul was overwhelmed with sorrow to the
- 4:02point of death. Honesty is not disrespect. Whenever
- 4:06it's offered to God with humility, he would rather
- 4:09receive your real griefs than a performance that
- 4:12keeps your heart away from him. And sitting in
- 4:16class, I was in a trinitarium class and it hit
- 4:19me like a ton of bricks that God is not changing,
- 4:22that he is not going to be changing based on
- 4:24my plan. And we say this and say this and if
- 4:27you think back and reflect on that, that is great
- 4:29because he has like all these different prayers
- 4:33and that's our will. And so we can pray for really
- 4:37good things and we can pray for people to be
- 4:39healed and we can pray for this and we can pray
- 4:41for that and they all sound really great. but
- 4:44he is not gonna change his his mind is made up
- 4:47and so it would come to me it was a light bulb
- 4:49situation where i was so whatever i haven't answered
- 4:52prayer it's because my prayer actually aligned
- 4:56with what he had already planned it was such
- 4:59a light bulb moment to me i was like shut your
- 5:01face i'm like that is so great i am not gonna
- 5:04change you though i want this to happen and it
- 5:07doesn't happen because that's not his plan and
- 5:10we get that kind of we get that But I was so
- 5:14mad about it at first until I just sat with that
- 5:16and I was oh, that's good I was so mad about
- 5:19it and then and I had made a post about it on
- 5:21social media And I was just really forward about
- 5:23the whole situation and I was oh Okay And so
- 5:27like we that's the win. That's the overall arching
- 5:31kind of like I aligned I sat with him and wrestled
- 5:34enough with that I didn't change him. He changed
- 5:38me. I sat with him long enough and know his character,
- 5:45know him, that my thoughts aligned with him.
- 5:49That's the win. That's the prayer. Oh my gosh,
- 5:52like that is so great. That is so great. That
- 5:54was my whole take on it. And so prayer is not
- 5:56control. Sometimes we use prayer as a spiritual
- 5:59attempt to control outcomes. We believe that
- 6:01if we say the right enough words, that if we
- 6:04have enough faith, that if we get into people,
- 6:07we get enough people to agree, God must do exactly
- 6:10what we ask. And that is so crazy. So scripture
- 6:13invites bold requests. We are told to ask, seek
- 6:17and knock. And we are told to cast our cares
- 6:20on God. But biblical faith is trust in God's
- 6:23character, not certainty or like preferred outcomes
- 6:27is always His will. God prayed in Gethsemane,
- 6:30if it is possible, let this cut pass for me.
- 6:33Yet not as it will, but you will. This is not
- 6:37weak faith. This is perfect trust. Jesus names
- 6:40what He desires and surrenders the outcome to
- 6:45the Father. And we can do the same thing. Lord,
- 6:48heal this relationship. Open the door. Provide
- 6:50this job. Protect this person. Change the situation.
- 6:54Then, and because you are God and I am not, I
- 6:59trust your wisdom, your timing, and your love.
- 7:03Surrender is not pretending that you do not care.
- 7:06It is placing what you care about the most in
- 7:09the hands of the faithful one, the more faithful
- 7:13than yours. And so often, what about unanswered
- 7:19prayers? And you can go back and thank Garth
- 7:21Brooks for that song. Thank God for unanswered
- 7:23prayers. Can you remember all those prayers that
- 7:25we prayed in high school and junior high and
- 7:29just nowadays, just a prayer that we prayed for?
- 7:32And then we watched God unfold a greater plan.
- 7:35And we've been praying for healing for my mother
- 7:37-in -law for 20 years, for MS, for her to get
- 7:40up and just walk out of the wheelchair, and just
- 7:42for my dad not to have chronic pain, and just
- 7:44for all these things. And so what about unanswered
- 7:49prayers? And so a few things that test our faith
- 7:51is silence. You prayed, you asked, you waited,
- 7:55and the situation didn't change. Or it changed
- 7:58in the way that you feared. We should be careful
- 8:02with easy explanations. We do not know every
- 8:05reason for an answer or is a delay or different.
- 8:09Scripture shows spiritual opposition, human choices
- 8:12and their consequences, a broken creation, purpose
- 8:15that we cannot yet see, and the mystery of God's
- 8:18provisions. We cannot say that every painful
- 8:21outcome means that you didn't have enough faith.
- 8:23Absolutely not. There are faith -filled people
- 8:26and have just all the faith, and they still have
- 8:30unanswered prayers. And we should be very careful
- 8:34about turning others' person's pain into a lesson
- 8:38too quickly. And when someone is grieving, the
- 8:41most faithful response may not be an explanation.
- 8:45It may just be presence. Job's friends did their
- 8:47best work when they just sat with him in silence.
- 8:50Their trouble began when they assumed they could
- 8:52explain exactly why he was suffering. And there
- 8:56is a difference between truth in a slogan. Truth
- 8:59can sit beside tears. Truth does not have brush
- 9:04grief out of rooms. Romans 8 does not say every
- 9:08event is good. It says that God is in the work
- 9:12in all things for good for those who love him
- 9:15and that are called according to his purpose.
- 9:17The problem is not that the wound is good. The
- 9:20promise is that the wound is not yet beyond his
- 9:23redemptive power. So if you're waiting today,
- 9:26and you don't have to force a testimony before
- 9:28it's time. You can say, I still do not understand.
- 9:32I'm still hurting, and I'm still choosing to
- 9:35bring this day to God. And that's a real prayer.
- 9:39That's a root of prayer. Paul prayed repeatedly
- 9:42for the thorn to be removed, and God answered,
- 9:45but not by removing it. He said, my grace is
- 9:48sufficient for you, for my power is perfect,
- 9:52perfected in your weakness. And God And Paul
- 9:55received sustained grace instead of escape. And
- 10:00I was listening to a sermon there today. And
- 10:02it was like, you know what? I don't pray for
- 10:03situations to change. I pray that God gives me
- 10:06broader shoulders. And so I do often say that,
- 10:09that God gave me broad shoulders and long legs.
- 10:11So whatever He's brought us to, He'll bring us
- 10:14through. And so that may not be the answer that
- 10:17you wanted. It is still an answer rooted in the
- 10:21presence of God. The cross is our deepest reassurance
- 10:24when circumstances confuse us. At the cross,
- 10:27God did not remain distant from suffering. The
- 10:30Son entered it and the resurrection tells us
- 10:32suffering will not have the final word. And you
- 10:35cannot trace God's, whatever you cannot trace
- 10:38God's hands, your anchor, yourself in the character
- 10:42revealed in Christ. And so prayer includes listening.
- 10:47And so it's like we can just ramble off like
- 10:49all these things in prayer and prayer. But listening,
- 10:52is prayer. And so listening, a listening prayer
- 10:55is not an empty or discernment or treating every
- 10:58thought as God's voice. It is a making room for
- 11:01the spirit to bring scripture to mind, expose
- 11:04motives, convict sin, give wisdom and reflect
- 11:08attention. After you speak, sit quietly, ask,
- 11:13Lord, what are you inviting me to notice? Is
- 11:16there something I need to confess? Is there someone
- 11:19that I need to forgive? Is there a command I
- 11:22already know but have delayed obeying? Then test
- 11:25what comes. God's guidance will align with scripture
- 11:29and the character of Christ. It will not ask
- 11:31you to sin or flatter your pride or give you
- 11:34permission to harm someone. Major decisions should
- 11:37be held with patience, wise counsel, and humility.
- 11:43Sometimes listening reveals no new sentence at
- 11:46all. Sometimes the gift is simply awareness.
- 11:50God is here, and I'm not alone. A prayer pattern
- 11:55for real life. And so when you do not know what
- 11:59to say, use four movements. Behold, be honest,
- 12:05ask, and surrender. And so behold, God, this
- 12:10is who you are. And name a truth from scripture,
- 12:14holy, merciful, present, wise, faithful. And
- 12:20be honest. This is what happened to me. This
- 12:24is what's happening to me. This is what happened
- 12:25to me. This is what I feel. Name the fear, the
- 12:29anger, the desire, gratitude or confusion without
- 12:33editing it. You don't have to have fancy words.
- 12:35You don't have to sound like a King James Bible
- 12:39whenever you go to God. Ask. This is what I need.
- 12:44And be specific. Ask for provision, wellness.
- 12:48wisdom, healing, courage, help, whatever it is,
- 12:51ask, be honest, because he already knows, and
- 12:56surrender. Your will be done. Keep me close and
- 13:02keep me faithful. And release the illusion that
- 13:07you actually have control. Just lose it. And
- 13:12so whenever my dad was in the hospital and he
- 13:14was pretty sick, And we would pray every night
- 13:17before I would leave. And it was like, was he
- 13:20going to have to have surgery? Was he going to
- 13:21make it through the surgery? And we would say,
- 13:24let your will be done. He's been here for a while.
- 13:28His birthday is coming up as I report this podcast.
- 13:30And I've talked about my dad on here several
- 13:32times. And it was such a joy to do that video
- 13:36that I had with him just walking through scripture.
- 13:38He really has had that life of Job and Paul and
- 13:42just his ailment after ailment and just God sees
- 13:45and through it and he's just not lost his faith.
- 13:47Doctors come in and they tell him all those things
- 13:48and he's, yeah, but I got Jesus. So it's going
- 13:51to be okay. And so just his faith has really
- 13:54seeped into this generation and it's going to
- 13:57seep into Gia's generation and hopefully her
- 14:00faith and watching just generations of us, just
- 14:03broken people. time after time and she sees unanswered
- 14:07prayers. She sees how we've prayed and there's
- 14:10certain things that she doesn't understand. And
- 14:13we walk through that and just see her seeing
- 14:15all of this, you know, and hopefully this is
- 14:17transforming her and this is hopefully what she
- 14:20sees and by her faith and her kids will know.
- 14:22And so generation after generation. And so whenever
- 14:25prayer becomes a place of formation and so prayer
- 14:28does not only change circumstances, prayer changes
- 14:31the person. who was praying, and that's what
- 14:33we talked about before. As we behold God, our
- 14:37visions get corrected. We confess our defense
- 14:40comes down. As we give thanks, we begin to notice
- 14:43grace, that fear, that hidden from our view.
- 14:46As we intercede for other people, our world becomes
- 14:49larger than our own immediate needs. The transformation
- 14:52that is often slow, we may not stand up for prayer
- 14:56with completely different feeling. But over time,
- 14:59repeated honesty with God presents looseness
- 15:02of our grip and pretense. Repeated surrender
- 15:06loses the grip of control. Repeated thanksgiving
- 15:08loses our grip of entitlement. Repeated intercession
- 15:12loses the grip of self -centeredness. And so
- 15:15think about the Lord's Prayer. It begins with
- 15:17our Father. Not my problem. Jesus places our
- 15:21first inside our relationship and the people.
- 15:25He turns our attention towards God's name, God's
- 15:28kingdom, God's will. only whenever we bring our
- 15:32daily bread, our sin, our relationships, our
- 15:35need for protection. Jesus is not telling us
- 15:38that our needs are unimportant. He teaches us
- 15:40how to locate our needs inside the larger reality
- 15:45of who God is. Prayer becomes rooted when God
- 15:48is treated not as a tool for achieving our plans,
- 15:52but worshipped because He is our Father and our
- 15:54King, that He is the Lord of lords, that He is
- 15:57our Savior. And this week, Choose one ordinary
- 16:01activity as a prayer bell. Maybe it's sitting
- 16:05in your car, washing your hands, waiting for
- 16:08the coffee, or walking into work. Let that moment
- 16:11remind you to pray one sentence. Father, your
- 16:15kingdom come into me today. Small prayers, sacred
- 16:21offerings. Keep churning your distracted heart
- 16:25towards God every time that you enter your room.
- 16:29You are invited in here, Holy Spirit. Whenever
- 16:32you have a stoplight, whenever you are going
- 16:35to a meal, just turn that into a prayer. Turn
- 16:37that into a gratitude. Thank you for this job.
- 16:40Thank you for this meal. Thank you for these
- 16:42people that I'm getting ready to talk to. And
- 16:45so ask yourself, what have I been afraid to say
- 16:49to God? Am I asking in trust or trying to control?
- 16:55Where do I need to lament? What outcomes do I
- 16:57need to surrender? And so let's pray. Dear Heavenly
- 17:01Father, thank you so much for today. Thank you
- 17:03so much for these listeners. Thank you that we
- 17:06are here without performance. You know our needs
- 17:09before we ask it, yet you welcome us in to ask.
- 17:13Receive our gratitude and our grief. Forgive
- 17:16our sin. Heal what is wounded. Give us wisdom
- 17:19where the road is unclear and sustaining grace
- 17:21where the burden remains. Teach us to recognize
- 17:24your voice. through your Word and our surrender
- 17:27every answer to your godliness and your goodness.
- 17:31When the words fail, remind us what the Spirit
- 17:33is helping us and Jesus is intercessing for us.
- 17:37We pray this in your name. Amen. Thank you for
- 17:40being here this week. Sometimes if someone you
- 17:43love is walking through unanswered prayers, share
- 17:46this episode gently without trying to fix them
- 17:49because you're not. That is not your burden to
- 17:51bear. And next week, we're going to be talking
- 17:53about the next faithful yes. Why obedience and
- 17:57ordinary life matters. When the dramatic intentions
- 18:01follow the show. Leave us a review. Visit Fostering
