- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the three O Take.
- 0:03Where we talk all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It. All starts right now.
- 0:16Welcome back to the Three O Take presented by Sea Kick.
- 0:17This is episode 480. I'll be your host, Kyle Corden.
- 0:20I'm here with a very, very dejected Yankees fan, Nate
- 0:25Reyes, my Co host Nate. Let's get this over with.
- 0:35What? What just happened?
- 0:42I, I this is got hope. That's what it.
- 0:45That's what happened. This was just game.
- 0:48This was just game one. I don't.
- 0:51Know instant classic, I'll say that.
- 0:55I, I tweeted it out. I, I sure hope those folks that
- 1:00said they weren't going to watch a minute of this World Series.
- 1:02I hope they're enjoying, they're enjoying recaulking their
- 1:04bathrooms tonight. Unbelievable.
- 1:12I'm hurting, man, I'm hurting. It still hasn't sunk in yet.
- 1:15Like I don't even have a dog in this fight.
- 1:16You obviously do here, but man, I was, I was on the edge of my
- 1:25seat and I know that gets that phrase gets thrown around a lot,
- 1:28but I, I, I was nervous. My heart, my heart rate was
- 1:33through the roof. Yeah.
- 1:38This game had this game had everything, everything.
- 1:45I know you're going to look at the box score if you didn't
- 1:47watch and you're not going to see that this was a pitching
- 1:51duel for six innings. And you're not even going to
- 1:53need to know that like it's a huge part of the game, but not a
- 1:59part of the the box score. It's not a part of the
- 2:01headlines. It's it's a great game.
- 2:04It's a classic for sure. And something that just dagger
- 2:12right in the heart, just dagger right in the right, right, right
- 2:17in the good spot. I'm going to ask you to do
- 2:22something very difficult. I'm going to ask, I'm going to
- 2:26ask you to suspend your disappointment, the sting of
- 2:32what just happened in the bottom of the 10th inning, just so we
- 2:36can even for just a few minutes dissect just how good of a
- 2:41baseball game this was. I know it hurts.
- 2:43I know you're I know you're feeling it right now, but that
- 2:51legitimately had to have been one of the the best baseball
- 2:55games I've watched in my lifetime.
- 2:56And I sure recency bias, but when I say that game had
- 3:00everything, if you watch that game, you saw everything you
- 3:05saw. You saw small ball, you saw a
- 3:09phenomenal starting pitch and you saw pitchers, pitchers with
- 3:13length in in this game. You saw great defensive plays.
- 3:17You saw clutch at bat. You saw ABS were guys were were
- 3:22working the pitch count, you had home runs taken away, you had
- 3:28calls reversed, you had diving plays in the same.
- 3:30I mean just everything. Yeah, yeah, it was a good game.
- 3:38Just definitely a good game. I mentioned it before like 2
- 3:43phenomenal starts out of out of Cole and Flaherty in two
- 3:49different kind of ways. And it, it felt like, you know,
- 3:55like it felt like, all right, well, is this maybe a little bit
- 3:58of a dud for game one? Like is this going to be are we
- 4:01feeling like, you know, maybe the the layoff is, is for the at
- 4:06least the offensive side is, is that hurting us?
- 4:09Like is that? And then I mean just, I'm not
- 4:16going to say dominance by any means.
- 4:21Like obviously we've seen great pitching duels before and I
- 4:24think this one is great considering the circumstances.
- 4:27You saw a little bit different. Like I think Flaherty looks
- 4:30better than Cole personally. I think Cole, the weird thing
- 4:36when he when he starts is that it's like you can tell when he's
- 4:42trying to strike everyone out. He's trying to be untouchable
- 4:48for the game, and that's typically when he's struggling
- 4:51to get through 5 because the pitch count is too high.
- 4:54And then this one was like, I have to go deep.
- 4:58So I'm just going right at these guys.
- 5:01And we saw balls hit to the track.
- 5:04We saw. I mean, the first inning was all
- 5:06barrels. Whereas Flaherty, like Flaherty
- 5:11has, I think looked the best he's looked all post season.
- 5:15I was spinning it like crazy, fastball playing up.
- 5:21I mean, the slider and curveball are moving.
- 5:23Like he looked really, really good.
- 5:27I had, I had tweeted out about Flaherty, the, the Dodgers had
- 5:31tweeted out his line just being like, and that's, that's a World
- 5:34Series starting the books for Flaherty, whatever.
- 5:36And I, I was in the replies and I was like, you know, one bad
- 5:40pitch, otherwise incredible effort.
- 5:42And then I followed up that tweet immediately and I was
- 5:44like, what am I even saying? That wasn't even he.
- 5:49It just backed up golf that batch it it just backed up a
- 5:52little bit. It just backed up a little bit,
- 5:54but when? You take that AB away and that's
- 5:56that's an incredible and honestly tip of the cap to
- 5:59Flaherty because I'm sure you saw he rolled up to Dodger
- 6:02Stadium in a Fernando Valenzuela jersey.
- 6:06And, you know, I mean, it kind of stings for him to have that
- 6:12blemish on his on his outing, but otherwise just a a great way
- 6:17to honor him. That was so big.
- 6:20I'm. I'm not trying to be dramatic
- 6:23when saying this and obviously we're going to dissect this game
- 6:25a little bit more, but like I I think this was the dream
- 6:29scenario for the Dodgers and worst case scenario for the
- 6:32Yanks. I think this was the worst
- 6:35possible outcome for the Yankees.
- 6:39I think they played a good game, but I think this was the worst
- 6:42possible outcome. They had to get to Flaherty
- 6:44early. They had to get to this bullpen
- 6:46early because game one dictates so much of Game 2 because of an
- 6:53off day Sunday. And it really could just kind of
- 6:58lays out what Dave Roberts is going to do with his pitching
- 7:00staff tomorrow. And so Flaherty going deep was
- 7:05everything for the Dodgers. The fact that they got a dub was
- 7:11a a last second, you know, cherry on top.
- 7:16And I think the Yankees would have been thrilled if they
- 7:19obviously, you know, can steal one in LA.
- 7:21But yeah, this is, yeah, this was worst case scenario for the
- 7:24Yanks, in my opinion. I to your point about Flaherty,
- 7:28I think Flaherty, you know, pitched better comparatively
- 7:33given given the expectations of of each one of the starting
- 7:37pitchers coming into the night. You, yeah.
- 7:39He gave you Cole. He gave you a cold start.
- 7:41Exactly. And he's not Cole.
- 7:43Like that's. Every every headline coming into
- 7:46this game was chances are Garrett Cole is going to give
- 7:50you what Garrett Cole typically gives you And he I mean, he went
- 7:53six, only gave up one had four KS on the night, which call it
- 7:58call it what it is. I mean that's it's rack up
- 8:01strikeouts against that lineup. That in the way he's attacking
- 8:05like that was built for that start.
- 8:06That game plan was built for length.
- 8:08It was not built for trying to mow guys down like I.
- 8:12I think he's very capable of getting 7-8 strikeouts every
- 8:15start and that that wasn't his game plan.
- 8:18This was to get outs quickly and attack guys early in the count
- 8:22and some were barreled. It didn't look pretty, but it
- 8:27ends up being a pretty good start line in the end.
- 8:31I'm sort of with you and saying that this was worst case
- 8:33scenario for the Yankees. Worst case is you.
- 8:35You don't get length out of Cole in this start he gave, he gives
- 8:38you 6. So although although the Yankees
- 8:42obviously lose out in the end, the fact that you didn't have to
- 8:46tap into your bullpen as aggressively given that Cole was
- 8:49able to do what not the reality of it is not a lot of pitchers
- 8:53that have been able to do this postseason is is take you into
- 8:56the 6th, the 7th, so on and so forth.
- 8:59The fact that he was able to do that again, given despite the
- 9:02loss that that has to help at least a little bit in Game 2 and
- 9:07setting the Yankees up for for the travel day coming up on
- 9:09Sunday. But my goodness, just I mean,
- 9:15the, the, the pitching duel that talked about the defensive play,
- 9:19I mean. There were big plays, man big,
- 9:22big plays. I think it was the 6th inning
- 9:29when Tommy Edmond had that diving slide up the middle on
- 9:36that single to keep it to keep Jazz at third from scoring from
- 9:402nd. And then I think we had a
- 9:44strikeout right after that that ended the inning that huge like
- 9:50simple but huge play. Not that it like it ended up not
- 9:58mattering because of the way because of the way that Jazz
- 10:03ended up, you know, going throughout the in the 9th, but I
- 10:06think it was the 9th or the 8th. It's all blending together at
- 10:08this point. But that single to right Center
- 10:11for Jazz, Mookie cutting it off before getting it.
- 10:14So, you know, before it got to the wall.
- 10:16Like, yes, Jazz still stole second and still ended up
- 10:19scoring in that inning, but like it's just little things and that
- 10:23don't show up in the in the in the box score.
- 10:26They don't show up in the book that were big defensive plays.
- 10:30You take it to the Yankee side, that Jazz play that I thought
- 10:36Mookie hit that 150 miles an hour.
- 10:39The ball is absolutely smoked. Short hop, excellent, excellent
- 10:45play. I think Otani was on 3rd.
- 10:48I'll tell you what, the Exit Velo nerds were loving this
- 10:51game. Oh yeah.
- 10:52Dude balls juiced late tonight. Balls were juiced the op Verdugo
- 11:02man like I I can you give him some flowers here Like I think
- 11:07we all know what he is offensively like there's a flash
- 11:10of something every once in a while, but like defensively he's
- 11:14been special for for a while now and big plays tonight.
- 11:19Well, that wasn't that wasn't the feeling I had in in the in
- 11:22the first inning on that miss play on that Freddy double,
- 11:26allowing him to get that was on a bad ankle.
- 11:28That was a bad angle that was overrun.
- 11:31I didn't like that. I didn't like the Sodo
- 11:35aggressive on that. I was at Kike, Yeah, that turned
- 11:40into a. Triple yeah.
- 11:42Well, it didn't turn into a trip, you know what I mean?
- 11:44Like I think just playing a little over aggressive and kind
- 11:47of overrunning some things. I'm being nitpicky, but like
- 11:53Oswaldo Cabrera kind of overrunning that over diving
- 11:58that single by Edwin in the last inning there.
- 12:03He was just into the game at that point, right?
- 12:04Yeah, well, yeah. So Glaber had hit that double
- 12:10and then Dominguez pinch ran and then Oswaldo came in.
- 12:18But I think the one of the biggest plays that's extremely
- 12:23small, but like watching it as as a as a player and a coach,
- 12:27like you like it, it makes you really kind of pissed.
- 12:32Was that Ohtani double off the wall, Soto throws it in and
- 12:38Torres deliberately gives himself a backhand short hop on
- 12:45a non play, a play that like it's a stand up double.
- 12:50There's no play at the bag. All you have to do is take a few
- 12:53steps back, get a long hop, keep it off your chest kind of thing.
- 12:58Worst case scenario, and he's lazy with footwork, he tries to
- 13:02backhand it and it flicks off his glove.
- 13:05Otani goes the third and then you have that Mookie sack fly
- 13:09that was hit on a line to judge. Like those are little things
- 13:14that I know I'm being nitpicky, but like those are things that
- 13:18that tie the knee. Like that's a that's a big
- 13:20thing. Like keeping him at second means
- 13:23that you probably attack Mookie a little bit differently and.
- 13:28It's not nitpicky man. That's.
- 13:30That it it's big enough to affect absolutely.
- 13:33It's big enough to affect things and.
- 13:35At this stage of the season, that's just huge.
- 13:38It can't happen. And this is what I was telling
- 13:40you before the series, is that like the Yankees have to be
- 13:42perfect with those types of plays.
- 13:45And that's how I've seen them lose throughout this year.
- 13:49And it's just like taking a half a second off and it ends up
- 13:54being a big moment. Yeah, see, I mean, to your point
- 14:01there, there were so many we talked about, I mentioned
- 14:03earlier just this game had everything it had small ball and
- 14:07and the IT had these moments just scattered littered
- 14:11throughout where you're taking an extra bag.
- 14:14One one that comes to mind. No coverage at third on on Jazz
- 14:19swiping, swiping the bag. Not sure what we're doing there.
- 14:23There was just so many moments where and you you mentioned one
- 14:27Soto overly aggressive on that what would have been a fly out
- 14:32turns into a triple or he was hoping that it would have been a
- 14:35fly out had he got there. There's just so many moments
- 14:38throughout this game where if it if it goes the other way, we
- 14:42could be looking at a completely different outcome.
- 14:45Yeah. I mean, you're talking like you
- 14:47can play this game on both sides, but like that Ohtani
- 14:50double, do you add 3 feet to that?
- 14:52And Oh my goodness. You know, now we're talking a
- 14:55little bit of a different story. The Glaber 1.
- 15:00Yeah, I do think it was going to hit off the wall.
- 15:03Yeah, I do think it was a double, but like I don't know.
- 15:08I've seen that pad give and it's skip off the top of the fence
- 15:11before. Like, I don't know.
- 15:12We don't know that it's just I think.
- 15:15Objectively, that was a double, but I, I.
- 15:17Think it was a double. I do think it was a double, but
- 15:20like we'll never know. It's just there's so many little
- 15:23things, man, so many little things.
- 15:28I love I you're right, dude. Like when you come to think of
- 15:31it like we saw excellent defense, we saw excellent base
- 15:34running, we saw Bunting. They they.
- 15:38They mentioned in the broadcast they're like, what year is it?
- 15:41We have starting pitchers going into the 7th.
- 15:43We're seeing a sacrifice bunts. Yeah, it's excellent.
- 15:48And shout out, I don't want it to go unnoticed, but in in in
- 15:52the vein of of good defense that play that Rizzo made over the
- 15:55shoulder. Dude, I like the I like get rid.
- 15:59Get rid of the hat. Dude, get rid of that bill.
- 16:01Get that out of there. I like that.
- 16:03Help. Yourself out a little bit.
- 16:05I like that. I like that.
- 16:07I'm, I'm, I'll be honest, it's probably going to sound salty
- 16:11and no one's going to, no one's going to defend here.
- 16:13It it's we all it. I'm going.
- 16:16To be if you're listening, if you're hanging out in the chat,
- 16:19We all witnessed the same thing. It's Go.
- 16:23I don't know. I don't think anyone's going to
- 16:25share the same opinion. I honestly, I think it's kind of
- 16:29nonsense that like Joe Davis and John Smoltz hate the Yankees and
- 16:33not hate. I don't think, I don't think Joe
- 16:35Davis hates the Yankees, but he calls Dodger games for a living
- 16:39during the regular season. And John Smoltz absolutely hates
- 16:42the Yankees because of what happened for 10 years of his
- 16:46life. And it's just like, bro, like,
- 16:50we can't, we can't get a third guy in there that like very
- 16:54clearly isn't on their knees for the Dodgers.
- 16:58Well. Credit to credit to Joe Davis, I
- 17:01think. I think he does.
- 17:03I think he does a solid job. I think he calls a good game.
- 17:06I think he does well, but overall, like you can hear that
- 17:09extra oomph, I mean, for the Dodgers.
- 17:13There's an extra oomph for the Dodgers, but I think he gives a
- 17:16a comparable amount of oomph for the Yankees.
- 17:18Did you hear the call on that, Stanton?
- 17:21I was moving bomb. No, I was yelling a lot.
- 17:24Yeah, I was loud. Please, you need to go back and
- 17:27listen to that call, he said. I don't.
- 17:28Want to go back for any part of this game?
- 17:30Scrapes the sky. That was, that was a top tier
- 17:36call. Top tier call given the
- 17:38circumstances and like you said, given the fact that he's like a
- 17:41Dodger guy. Excellent call from Joe Davis
- 17:43there. Yeah.
- 17:46I, I did say before the series started that it's we have two
- 17:54managers that have made difficult and questionable calls
- 17:58and whether it's hindsight involved, but at some point one
- 18:03of these two managers is going to make a call that we're going
- 18:05to question. I don't understand Nestor.
- 18:10I don't understand. I know, I know the game plan, I
- 18:15know the reports, I know the ideas that he's on the roster
- 18:18for Otani. I know Otani doesn't have good
- 18:20numbers. I get that.
- 18:22I know that. Can we put?
- 18:23He's not. I guess, yeah.
- 18:26Let's let's put a pin in Nestor real quick, but I want to keep
- 18:28it on this topic and it because I I made a note because I wanted
- 18:31to ask you your thoughts on the two.
- 18:36It seems to be the the theme here of me asking you your
- 18:39thoughts on on these moves to the pen specifically with Clay
- 18:43Holmes and Luke Weaver bringing in Holmes after Gerrit Cole.
- 18:50I'd want to say he had that little sort of sawed off single
- 18:53out into the out in the left center.
- 18:55I believe Tay Oscar. And so they he brings in Clay
- 19:00Holmes in the bottom of the 7th and then immediately plunks Max
- 19:03Max Muncie before he even did that.
- 19:06Were were you OK with that move as?
- 19:10A Oh yeah, I feel, I feel really good about Clay Holmes right
- 19:12now. I really do like, oddly enough,
- 19:14I, I know, but I think there's been enough time removed and I
- 19:18think he's looked good enough in the postseason that like I, I
- 19:21feel confident. It's it's when the button is
- 19:24being pressed that I have an issue.
- 19:26And Boone is notorious for trying to steal outs instead of
- 19:30understanding that I, that I, I, there's, there show me an
- 19:35analytic that that has a reliever with better numbers
- 19:41throwing, sitting down and coming back in.
- 19:43Like, show me an analytic that a reliever isn't better with a
- 19:47clean inning. And I understand some of them
- 19:50are supposed to come in during, you know, wedges, during
- 19:53difficult moments, during, you know, game and impacting
- 19:57moments. And that's what holds are all
- 19:59about. It's just when you start
- 20:03stealing outs like that, you're almost burning a reliever too
- 20:07soon. And I felt that Clay Holmes was
- 20:10burned too soon, which means that you got to press the canely
- 20:14button too soon. And then, when you're not
- 20:17trusting Kane Lee to finish out an inning, you burn the Weaver
- 20:23button too soon. Chain reaction for sure.
- 20:25And it's just that there's not enough depth at the back end of
- 20:29that bullpen to do that. I think Jay Cousins was
- 20:33admirable, but let's face it, he was out for weeks before the
- 20:37postseason and he hasn't. I don't think he's really looked
- 20:40the same of what we saw during the regular season.
- 20:45And that's what he does is what Boone does.
- 20:51And like, one can argue that's why we're here, I guess.
- 20:53I don't know. But like, I hated it.
- 20:57I hated all of it. I hated Nestor being in the game
- 21:00so much. Still putting a pin in the
- 21:04Nestor thing. I hated it.
- 21:05Another another pitching question for you.
- 21:10This whole Tommy Kane Lee change up thing the the stubbornness of
- 21:16not just Dodgers hitters, but hitters that he has faced prior
- 21:21to this with this whole change up streak.
- 21:23It he he he went into he finished out that inning having
- 21:29thrown 50 consecutive change UPS and I don't I don't remember
- 21:34what happened when he because he came back out I believe right
- 21:36for the next inning after that. I don't know, I don't know if
- 21:39that streak continued or what. I've I've sort of stopped paying
- 21:42attention to it. But as as his opposition, the
- 21:47inability to make an adjustment. They talked about it on the
- 21:49broadcast. Move up in the box, take it.
- 21:51And that's what Smoltz was saying.
- 21:53Move up in the box, take away a little bit of the movement that
- 21:56that tail end movement off the change up and and maybe get
- 22:01some, some more bat on the ball. It was just mind blowing to me
- 22:04because the, I mean, yeah, I would have to imagine even the
- 22:08most casual fan who's slightly interested in the World Series
- 22:11is aware of this change up streak at this point.
- 22:13So you you, you can't. Tell me nasty man it.
- 22:17I mean I. And it's credit.
- 22:18To the hitters, it's tough, but I mean, make an adjustment.
- 22:21They're more often than not that it misses down because of the
- 22:25amount of movement it misses down.
- 22:26Typically it's similar, similar approach to like a Clay Holmes,
- 22:32like scoot up in the box and get that get to that sinker before
- 22:35it dips down below too, too much.
- 22:37So yeah, I don't know, man. He's he's done great.
- 22:41It's just it's this, it's this trying to steal out.
- 22:47It's this. If I see Weaver come out for
- 22:52another and he did good. He held it like he did his job.
- 22:55But like if I see him come out for another anything over a
- 23:01normal 3 out save or hold, I'm losing my mind.
- 23:06I can't do it anymore. And again, it like it just you
- 23:10burn things too quickly and that like you said, it's a ripple
- 23:15effect. And then when we get to these
- 23:17points of if we can't clog another run across, we're now in
- 23:20the 10th and we're running dry and we and then we're left with
- 23:25this. Tim Hill has been great.
- 23:33And if you're wanting to have the Nestor argument against
- 23:36Otani, great. Like we still got to go.
- 23:44If we get him out, we still get our if the plan was to walk
- 23:48Mookie, like you still got to get through Freddie.
- 23:54I just I don't like that. And Nestor missed, missed his
- 23:57spot, supposed to be up and in, miss down and in what hitter
- 24:02from the left side can't dominate that pitch.
- 24:04Obviously a Hall of Famer is going to handle that pitch and
- 24:08he did. He put it on freaking Broadway.
- 24:11It's just, it's just questionable moves.
- 24:16Tim Hill has been very good and he's funky.
- 24:21That's not an easy angle he comes from.
- 24:24And if you're going to sit here and say that you were worried
- 24:26about a wild pitch or whatever, like I don't want to hear it.
- 24:29That's not what I want to hear. That's not that's not a reason
- 24:32to go with Nestor, who we haven't seen.
- 24:35What in a month and. And we have no idea if the Velos
- 24:40there like I just super, super questionable move.
- 24:47And I feel like the Yankees had this.
- 24:52I feel like they had it. Well, that's that's sort of what
- 24:56I was telling you. And I know it's not much of A
- 25:00consolation, but what we were talking about before we hopped
- 25:03on is that for you, a Yankees fan, I would at least have the
- 25:10confidence in knowing that you did enough to win the game short
- 25:14of an Aaron Boone questionable call.
- 25:18And that, and that's not hindsight.
- 25:20We're not, this isn't revisionist history.
- 25:23They, they said it immediately. And if you've been paying
- 25:25attention to the whole Nestor Cortez trajectory, you know, we
- 25:29haven't seen this kind of month even before the home run
- 25:34happened, before the Freddie Friedman walk off Grand Slam
- 25:36happened. You know that that's probably
- 25:39not the best guy to go to. And I I think Nestor probably
- 25:44knew that. And this is what this is what we
- 25:46talked. About last episode I.
- 25:49This is what I told you last episode.
- 25:50I said, you have this guy talking about how he's, he's
- 25:54talking about the severity of this injury that he's dealing
- 25:57with the UCL injury, talking about how he, there's, there's
- 26:02part of his mind that's already chalking out or, you know,
- 26:06writing off next year. He's like, if, if I can end
- 26:10this, this World Series with a ring and it means me it, it
- 26:14means me missing all of next year.
- 26:17And, and we talked about it. You and I agreed.
- 26:19Great mindset, love the love the the bulldog type mentality
- 26:22there. But what does that say about the
- 26:24severity of what he's dealing with?
- 26:26If he's already telling you that it's something that could more
- 26:29than likely knock him out for next year?
- 26:30Is that the guy you want to bring in having not thrown in a
- 26:34month in a situation where he could give up?
- 26:37That's. That's my problem.
- 26:39Why that spot? Why that spot?
- 26:42If you're looking to steal out, do that in the sixth, do that in
- 26:46the seventh. Do that in a spot where you
- 26:48still have time to recover if it doesn't go well.
- 26:51Because let's face it, live hitters, bullpens aren't going
- 26:56to tell you what that's going to be.
- 26:58That's not a good enough tell. You're not going to know what he
- 27:02is or what he has until you see him in this game moment.
- 27:06So I don't understand why you're putting him in that spot where
- 27:11it's you have you can't recover, especially when you're running
- 27:16double barrel in the in the bullpen and Tim Hills ready to
- 27:19go. You didn't.
- 27:20You didn't press that button yet.
- 27:23With the way that this game went, I have no problem with
- 27:28with the, I mean, maybe in terms of getting, getting these, these
- 27:32leverage relievers clean innings, like you said, that
- 27:35would be the only thing I probably would have changed.
- 27:38However, I don't disagree with Boone's decision to go to those
- 27:41guys because this is the trend now you're seeing.
- 27:44You're seeing these managers go to these high leverage guys
- 27:47earlier in games in in the high leverage situations.
- 27:50That's why, if it were up to me, Nesser Cortez doesn't see the
- 27:53mound at all in game one. I agree.
- 27:55Because you, you talk about the importance, they talk about it
- 27:58that you, you see the statistic floating around all the time,
- 28:00the importance of winning Game 1.
- 28:02And especially for the Yankees, if you're, if you're able to go
- 28:05into Dodger Stadium on the road, sneak out a steal a win to start
- 28:10the series. And.
- 28:12And you're putting yourself, you know, percentage, percentage
- 28:15points that much higher in terms of your odds of being able to,
- 28:20to win this thing. But then you go out and you try
- 28:22to get a guy you know some, get him some ABS to shake the rust
- 28:27off in the bottom of the 10th inning.
- 28:29Yeah, with the bases loaded against the Hall of Famer.
- 28:32Make it make sense, bro, Make it make sense.
- 28:36I just. And I don't care about the bad
- 28:38ankle for Freddie Freeman. They.
- 28:39Me neither. Honestly, it might have been a
- 28:41Rod talking about it before the game or maybe no, I think it was
- 28:45Smoltz. He's like or maybe even D row on
- 28:48MLB Network today. I don't know.
- 28:49Somebody was talking about how Freddie Freeman 50%.
- 28:54Still better than a. Lot of players out there.
- 28:57So, you know, like, yeah, the more I talk about this Nesser
- 29:01decision, the more I'm like. What's It's horrendous.
- 29:04Thinking it's. Horrendous.
- 29:06It's horrendous. Oh my goodness.
- 29:08It's bad. That's and that's the that's
- 29:10what's going to be decided. And I, I told you, I told you
- 29:15one of these guys was in props to Dave Roberts because like I
- 29:19think it's been a little bit since he's pressed one of those
- 29:22buttons and been wrong and been ridiculed in the media for it.
- 29:25But like Boone does this once a week, man, I've watched it once
- 29:28a week for years now. This is just what he does part.
- 29:32Of me, part of me wonders if he was looking across the field in
- 29:36into the Dodgers dugout, seeing Dave Roberts go to Alex Vessia,
- 29:40who you know, fortunate for the Dodgers was able to make the
- 29:42roster. He he seems to be doing well.
- 29:45He came out, had a strong outing, three up, three down
- 29:48that first inning that he was in there.
- 29:50I think he did he only go 1. I don't think he yeah, he only
- 29:53went one retired the the the only three hitters he faced.
- 29:58I'm part of me wonders like is is Aaron Boone trying to one up
- 30:02him be like, hey, I know Vesti hasn't pitched in in a handful
- 30:05of days, but I got a guy here who hasn't pitched in a month
- 30:08and maybe we can get him a a a three up three down situation.
- 30:12But. I don't know man, my goodness.
- 30:16Just some interesting decisions. I I think, and it doesn't help
- 30:21the confidence. It doesn't help Nestor in any
- 30:24way. You know what I mean?
- 30:25Like I Tim Hill, just it, it made more sense.
- 30:30It made more sense. And, and outside of if you
- 30:36remove the numbers against Otani, there's no other argument
- 30:42for Nestor being in that spot. It's absolutely no other no
- 30:47other argument. And and not to keep rehashing it
- 30:51or to, to keep harping on it, but like this I, I
- 30:56wholeheartedly believe with every fiber of my being that
- 31:02that was not the right decision and that this is not hindsight
- 31:05bias. This is looking at the situation
- 31:10recognizing that this guy has not pitched in a month and
- 31:14you're bringing him in. Oh, it was a starter.
- 31:17When's the last time you saw a relief appearance?
- 31:19Oh my goodness, it just, it gets worse.
- 31:22Game one of the World Series on the road in a game in which you
- 31:27are winning in extra innings. Acting like this is some kind of
- 31:32joker card that you're pulling out, it's insane, bro.
- 31:36It's insane. I think one thing, by the way,
- 31:39I, we kind of glossed over this move and I, I do think it's
- 31:43something that was strange when I saw it happen because there
- 31:47wasn't a big difference in speed.
- 31:49But Glaber hits that double with the interference and Dominguez
- 31:54gets the pinch run and then as as Waldo gets the defensive
- 32:01replacement for Glaber at second.
- 32:05I don't know if there's enough speed difference.
- 32:07I don't, I'm not staring at analytics.
- 32:08I can't assume that Dominguez is that much faster, that much
- 32:13better of a baserunner than Oswaldo, but it makes you
- 32:17curious. It's like, why would you burn
- 32:19two of your bench players in one move?
- 32:21Right, right. And it also makes you wonder,
- 32:24like, especially now with what Nestor just did, how much is
- 32:27John Birdie going to be missed? Like, say what you will, but
- 32:31like, that's a that's a bona fide veteran bench player who
- 32:36has shown experience at pretty much every position in the
- 32:39infield gives you more options. I like Jason Dominguez and I get
- 32:44that you need a fourth outfielder, but like, that was
- 32:47something that I wondered also. And again, when the Yankees win,
- 32:53a lot of the stuff gets covered up.
- 32:55And the fact that the Yankees are in the World Series, Aaron
- 32:57Boone probably doesn't get the, you know, ridicule that I think
- 33:02he deserves. I just don't think he's a very
- 33:03good manager. I don't think he makes the right
- 33:06calls. I don't trust his gut and this
- 33:08is another example to add to the stack that I've watched for six
- 33:13years now. I don't know, man.
- 33:19I mean not. And I know we've been harping on
- 33:21the the Boone slash Nestor decision here, but I I don't
- 33:25want that to take away from the magnitude of what Freddie
- 33:27Freeman was able to do here at the end of the game.
- 33:29I mean that I mean. I told you, I still don't know
- 33:34where that ball landed. I can't watch it.
- 33:36The second it this second, the second I saw it down in and I
- 33:41just put my head down, I hear Joe Davis popping off and I'm
- 33:45like, I am frozen. Touch that ball that and that
- 33:51bat drop. Yeah, shout out Andrew.
- 33:54He text me right away. OG follower of the pod.
- 33:57He he shot me a text said the backdrop was cold and it my
- 34:03goodness, you just know and and I think I think we can look at
- 34:08Freddie Freeman. We can look at his his
- 34:11character, we can look at his career type of player he is and
- 34:16and probably reach the conclusion that he's not looking
- 34:19at that situation going and I took that personally.
- 34:24He's like, he's probably looking at that going it's Mookie, it's
- 34:28Mookie Betts like it. I just happen to be the next guy
- 34:31up in this. Just who's who's been hitting
- 34:34straight Lenas all. I just happen to be the next guy
- 34:38up in this world beating offense.
- 34:41So, you know, shout out to Freddie for just being a a pros
- 34:45pro doing what he, I would imagine, stepped up to the plate
- 34:49to do. And, you know, good for and, and
- 34:52honestly like taking a step back from I think, baseball.
- 34:55I I could be crazier but I think he has reverse splits.
- 34:59It's very possible. I feel like Freeman is very good
- 35:03left left. I could be wrong.
- 35:06But no, what I was saying is, you know, take a step back from
- 35:10baseball that that has to feel so good for him and his family,
- 35:13given you know, what what happened earlier this year with
- 35:16with his son and everything. I would imagine they've probably
- 35:19gone through a lot. So you know, that, I mean,
- 35:23Freddie, you, you just got to love that for him.
- 35:26You, you certainly Dodgers fans are loving that for themselves.
- 35:30But you know, yeah, the comment here in the chat about judge, we
- 35:38haven't really even touched on that.
- 35:41And we, we sort of touched on it in regards to Stanton's home
- 35:44run, but the, the parallel there or, or the connection there
- 35:49going back to the AL, what was that?
- 35:53The, the DS, maybe the CS both me sending you, me sending you
- 36:01the Captain Phillips meme. I'm the captain now.
- 36:03And hey, credit to you. I'll, I'll tip my cap to you.
- 36:07You acknowledge it tonight. You said you can go ahead and
- 36:09say it after you hit the home run.
- 36:11And I had at that point, I had already posted it to all the
- 36:14platforms. So I was already thinking of it,
- 36:15but. It's just Judge is just pressing
- 36:20so much. Three KS What was he?
- 36:22One for one for 4:00 tonight. 11 for four?
- 36:25Yeah, one for four just pressing, man, just pressing
- 36:31hard and it's yeah, you're watching you're watching him
- 36:38swing over the top of of sliders and curveballs down that we
- 36:42didn't see almost all year and now it's like April it Yeah.
- 36:47And now we're seeing like the early judge from a few years ago
- 36:53that watching him chase the way he used to chase, and it's just
- 36:58it's crazy to watch him press the way he's pressing.
- 37:01We're seeing April Judge right now.
- 37:03That's. The reality of it, it's bad,
- 37:05dude. It's really, really bad.
- 37:09I don't know, man. I I don't think there's going to
- 37:12be any drastic lineup changes because Boone doesn't do that.
- 37:17Which I can respect, I I don't like reactionary.
- 37:19Line I don't either. I don't either.
- 37:22I don't either unless it's been like, you know, a stretch over a
- 37:25few series, but like what are you going to?
- 37:28You can't take him out, you can't move him.
- 37:30He's yeah, even with the struggle of the that he's
- 37:34having, he's still a presence in the box.
- 37:37He's still affecting the way pitchers are attacking him and
- 37:40he's still probably a big reason why Stanton is having the
- 37:44success he's having. And for sure like, you know,
- 37:46like those are still effects and ripple effects of a of a game.
- 37:51But it's tough, man, It's tough. I don't know.
- 37:55I do know that I don't know if I can rock this jersey again.
- 37:58This I got to. I got to.
- 37:59Yeah, that's that's tough. I think I'm going to Rd.
- 38:02Gray tomorrow. I just, it's going to be tough,
- 38:06man. I got to find a dub.
- 38:07Somewhere who's on the back of that?
- 38:09Road Gray is also Jeter. That's this is Jeter.
- 38:11That's also Jeter. Oh, that's the.
- 38:15One, That's the one you wore back when we went to the Wild
- 38:17Card game in Boston. That's right, yeah.
- 38:20Yeah, maybe not that one either. Then I've got a Pinstripe Judge
- 38:25and then a Pinstripe Mickey. So.
- 38:28So there's got to be a dub somewhere in there.
- 38:34Bridge of October podcast In the Chat says from Sarah Lang's Two
- 38:37Out Walk Off Home runs while trailing in World Series history
- 38:4188 Kirk Gibson game one and tonight Freddie Freeman.
- 38:47That's good stat. Making history, I mean.
- 38:50The heck of a ball game I'm. Just.
- 38:53I'm hurting, man. I'm hurting.
- 38:54It's it's this is what I said. When you get full tilt Dodgers
- 39:03and full tilt Yankees, I think it's going to be a good series.
- 39:07But when the Yankees do this, they beat themselves.
- 39:13And I'm not taking away credit from a ridiculous top of the
- 39:18order in Dodgers in creating that that rally in the 10th.
- 39:23But like the Yankees do this, man, they beat themselves and
- 39:28they have a manager that manages to do the same, Then they can't
- 39:32afford to do that, not against this team.
- 39:35So I don't know. I know it's game one.
- 39:38I know there's a lot left in this series but I'm struggling
- 39:41to that my confidence meters dipping down for sure because a
- 39:46gut punch it's. Game one it's game one I as
- 39:53somebody I I will say this and and you you can choose to
- 39:58believe me or not I I did my best to watch tonight and I'm
- 40:03going to continue to try to do my best this series to to watch
- 40:07it with as. Unbiased of eyes as I can and
- 40:12like sure, I'm, I'm not pulling for the Yankees to win the World
- 40:17Series by any stretch, but I am pulling for quality baseball and
- 40:25we got that tonight. And I I'm I'm confident that
- 40:28even as crushing as this losses for the Yankees that they're
- 40:32going to bounce back. I, I had somebody reach out to
- 40:36me. They text me.
- 40:36They said, what's your prediction?
- 40:38I said, I'm going Dodgers and six and he text me back and
- 40:42said, why aren't you going Dodgers and four?
- 40:44I thought you thought you were a Sox guy.
- 40:46And I was like, I can't be that stupid.
- 40:48I can't be that stupid. And that, that I, I truly
- 40:51believe that. Like I, I, I think the Yankees
- 40:53are, are going to be more than capable of bouncing back.
- 40:55And not to mention their, I mean, it goes without saying,
- 40:59but they're going to be heading back to the Bronx after Game 2,
- 41:01which, you know. In any scenario Game 2 I feel a
- 41:06million times better, but if they drop these first two I'm
- 41:12struggling to see it. In any scenario, I don't care
- 41:16who the teams involved are. If if you drop the first game of
- 41:19a series, you win the next one and then you go home, I would
- 41:24argue that's probably best case scenario if you are going to
- 41:27lose 1. That's the first one.
- 41:29Like we talk, we talk about, you know, the importance of winning
- 41:32game one, but what's happened has happened.
- 41:35But if you're the Yankees, you can win Game 2 and just, you
- 41:38know, maybe make people forget a little bit about game one and
- 41:41then you come home. We're looking at a a very
- 41:46interesting rest of the series. Sure are all right.
- 41:53Hey, I'm proud of you, man. Did the last thing I'll say when
- 42:01it, when I saw that we're going to the bottom of the ninth, I
- 42:03was like, OK, well, Nate's either either going to be pumped
- 42:07or he's going to be absolutely crushed because there's no
- 42:10scenario now where we can just have like a.
- 42:13A. Six to two win.
- 42:14That wasn't necessarily all that close, but you handled you
- 42:18handled your own tonight, just given given circumstances.
- 42:22Trying to make sure I don't get too high or too low man this is.
- 42:26And that's why the people people love you, Nate, you're.
- 42:29Yeah. Admirable baseball fan, I'm.
- 42:32Hurting. Anyways, guess we'll see you
- 42:35tomorrow. Game one in the books.
- 42:38Game one in the books. Yeah, we'll see you guys for
- 42:41Game 2. Little bit of a surprise, even
- 42:44for us. It was kind of a game time
- 42:46decision for us, for you. You know what?
- 42:48Let's just run it. Let's just run it with the
- 42:50nightly recaps. We were planning on just coming
- 42:52to you guys live from the travel, travel days or the off
- 42:56days, whichever you want to call it.
- 42:58But we're like, no, you know what?
- 43:00Let's let's run it nightly. And boy, am I glad we made that
- 43:04decision. Yeah, yeah, me too.
- 43:07Me too. We'll see you guys tomorrow.
- 43:10I got to get out of here. I can't talk about anymore.
- 43:13I got to take this jersey. Off proud of you.
- 43:15Thanks. Don't get chasing curveballs.
- 43:18Love you all, and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 43:19baseball with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
