- 1:12of Philip Marlow The Restless Day. They all knew he was aboard the up
- 1:18when it exploded and sank, and everybody called his death an accident. That
- 1:22is, everybody except the cops himself. He said it was murder. From
- 1:26the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most
- 1:30famous character as cd AS presents the Adventures of Philip Marlowe and Now with Gerald
- 1:48Moore starred as Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting story, The Restless
- 1:53Day. It had been a long, hard Saturday night that topped off a
- 2:05long, rugged week. When I finally got the bed dog tired at five
- 2:08am Sunday morning, I was planning to stay there until I caught up in
- 2:12all the sleep I'd lost and gained a running head start on the coming week.
- 2:15And by three in the afternoon on the day of rest I figured that
- 2:19job was only about half done. But however it was. It started riding
- 2:23my doorbell had a different idea. I held out until the buzzer stopped,
- 2:28but it was only a change of technics, so I gave a all right,
- 2:31all right, I know when I'm licked just a minute. Thank Heaven
- 2:38you're in mister mollow. I don't know what I'd have done otherwise. I'm
- 2:43sorry. Here read this this story on the front page. Down here.
- 2:47Ohyah. Explosion death label accident, Yes yes, mystery blast which destroyed the
- 2:53Rowlands yacht at Santa Monica Friday night, and in which Benjamin Rowlands noted cosmetics
- 2:57manufacturer was killed, was established today by police investigators. Is accidental. I'm
- 3:01sorry I spoken to him. That's sorry. The explosion, which shattered and
- 3:05sank the fifty foot pleasure boat was caused by a leaking fuel line orlans known
- 3:08to be a chain smoker, is believed by witnesses to continue on page seven.
- 3:13Never mind, Mallow, I'll tell the rest. I think you'll make
- 3:16it. There are two frightening things wrong with that story. Well, go
- 3:21ahead, frighten me. First, the explosion was no accident. That pure
- 3:24line was repaired a week ago. Second, Ben Rowlins was not killed,
- 3:29shaking my faith in the American press. How do you know all this because
- 3:32I am Benjamin Rowlins. Yes, well, look, Felly, you better
- 3:36dial one one six on the phone and tell a police all about it.
- 3:38No, that's exactly what I can't do. Someone's trying to murder me.
- 3:42If they find out I'm still alive, I'll be a target for a second
- 3:44attempt. Wait a minute, Wait a minute, I need two things right
- 3:47now. One a cup of coffee. Would you like some or milk if
- 3:50you please? My doctor insists, Okay, come on, Yeah, there's
- 3:53a good, solid explanation. Of why everybody thinks you were aboard that yacht.
- 3:57Well, first they believe my body was law and the explosion. To
- 4:00see, I intended to spend the night there because Lucille, my wife,
- 4:03and I quarreled. But I got a call and I had to go out
- 4:06of town on business. At the last minute. I went out to the
- 4:10boat, but only to pick up some papers. I was a hurry.
- 4:13I must have left the lights on. I lost my hat in the wind
- 4:15on the way back. It was found. It was found in the water.
- 4:21Apparently I didn't secure the dinghy because that was a drift off shore.
- 4:26Mind you. I read all this in the paper when I got back this
- 4:29morning, back from where Phoenix, Arizona figures I came in on the California
- 4:33Limited. You can check on that, Marlow. I must know who tried
- 4:38to kill me before they know they've failed. It could be tough. If
- 4:41you got any ideas, yes I have, it might be any one of
- 4:45three people. Three For instance, Walter Pittman, my ex partner, threatened
- 4:48to kill me less than a month ago in New York when I won another
- 4:51court decision from him. And there's my business manager for a named Slater I
- 4:56almost fired him last week, the arrogant foo. It's always when I get
- 5:00cross this cost I see, and I'm sorry to say it, but missus
- 5:04Rawlins would no doubt rather have me dead than alive. That's quite a line
- 5:11up for a mere cosmetics chemist, isn't it. Yes, it is.
- 5:14Look you haven't been running lipstick experiments with somebody else's live equipment, have you,
- 5:16Ronins? Oh, certainly not. I've been working so hard. I
- 5:20haven't time for my wife, say nothing of another woman. Oh Marlow,
- 5:25I'm frightened. I must get to the bottom of this. I'll pay you
- 5:28double your usual fee. Will you help me? Okay, Rawlins, it's
- 5:30a deal. By hurry, I might get in on your funeral under the
- 5:33circumstances that should make somebody do for a very big surprise. I was shaven
- 5:47a shower later, and I'd checked my wheezing clients credential, settle them down
- 5:50in my apartment with all his answer the phone but not the door, and
- 5:55drove out to Santa Monica, where the not very late Ben Rawlins had made
- 5:58his home, names, addresses and phone numbers of people close to Rowins.
- 6:02That is close enough to kill, and I decided that off the Slayer,
- 6:05the business manager, was my best bet for an opener. He had been
- 6:09described as soft spoken, efficient, and somewhat arrogant. After I found his
- 6:14cottage on Seaview Drive and walked up to the door, I heard someone inside
- 6:17offering a similar description, but with more color. Mighty routine office later.
- 6:21Do you think for two minutes you could throw the land you over any time
- 6:25you feel like it? After all the promises you've made your wrong that's just
- 6:28about enough ery not by Hey, brother, I know which way the wind
- 6:31is blowing, and it's a nice, big wind. Nobody kicks me out,
- 6:34I I mean nobody, So thinking over, mister big get out of
- 6:40my way. Yes, ma'am, cute kid friend of yours? Slator?
- 6:44Who are you another insurance investigator? That's right, My name's Marlow. May
- 6:46I come in? Certainly all the others did. Thanks, Who knows?
- 6:51That may be the last Slater. I've got three reasons for believing that yacht
- 6:55explosion was no accident? Not an accident? What reasons you're talking about?
- 6:59One? Wallan Pittman. You mean Rawlin's ex partner you know only by name.
- 7:04I never met the man, all right, then let's talk about a
- 7:06reason number two. Lucille Rawlins, how do you feel about it? Slady?
- 7:11You must be out of your mind? Model. She and Ben fought
- 7:14constantly. Yes, Slater, I asked how you felt about missus Rawlins.
- 7:16I don't like her? Now what or who is reason number three? You
- 7:23are? You had an argument with Rawlins last week? He practically fired you.
- 7:26And do you think I'd kill him over? That could be Marlow.
- 7:30Ben Rawlins drove himself like an overloaded truck. He had a cigarette cough,
- 7:34nervous shakes, and bad dreams. To me, bureau drawer, eye lashes
- 7:39and blue on fingernails simply aren't that important. So we had frequent arguments.
- 7:44Now do you have any more smart reasons you'd like to discuss? So?
- 7:46Would you care to leave? Just one thing more? Why does your girlfriend
- 7:49think you're a little stuck up? These days? You're becoming a bit too
- 7:53personal? Model, Get out. I'm not compelled to answer any of your
- 7:57questions. There's an established legal proceeds I it I need to, I'll be
- 8:00back, and I'm fairly chummy with the boys and Blue myself, so I'll
- 8:03get the answers if I want him good night. Big shot Arthur Slater was
- 8:16like a billion ball, hard to rub the wrong way, and if he
- 8:18did have an angle, he was playing KG. So as long as I
- 8:22was in the neighborhood, in the trail was hot, I figured i'd have
- 8:24a talk with a SplitFire Angie. It wasn't hard to trail it. A
- 8:28corner newsboy had heard her get into a cab. The cabby swore he'd never
- 8:31forget her swore again, so finding her apartment was less trouble than unfolding a
- 8:35five dollar bill. When I pulled up across the street from a place,
- 8:39I noticed a big car, as big as the average garage and older than
- 8:43last year's college graduate. Parked in front was a black pierced arrow, and
- 8:48someone with a mouthful of cigar huked behind the wheel, and cigar was pointed
- 8:52at me as I crossed the street. When I went up the stairs to
- 8:54Angie's door, it was still pointed at me, but I forgot about that.
- 8:58When the apartment door opened, Angie was relaxed. There a little glints
- 9:03of gold and her green eyes, and the warm lights behind her shimmered on
- 9:07soft waves of hair, a shade of burnished copper. Maybe she was a
- 9:11spitfire, but at the moment her damper was down. Yea, well,
- 9:18Busty, you got your math open, you might as well say something,
- 9:20eh, Angie, who do you think murdered Ben Rollins? Murdered? My
- 9:26mistake? Chum? Good night? Just a minute, This is business,
- 9:30honey. Who are you anyhow? Philip Marlow? You ran over me on
- 9:35your way out of slatest place a few minutes ago and dented my ego?
- 9:37Well sue me who you're working for? Shamas? It wouldn't believe me if
- 9:41I told you, But I will tell you this, sweetheart. The explosion
- 9:45on that yacht was no accident, So I'm checking up on wives. It'd
- 9:48rather be widows. We'll see you rolling not She was rolling in though.
- 9:52Either way. She hated her job, but she sure didn't have to kill
- 9:54to quit. Get your compass fixed, Marlow? Wrong way? Well,
- 10:00suppose Lucille were in love with the Pittman. Maybe Pittman? Who's he shotman?
- 10:05Doc? Tell me something, Angie. Your boyfriend Slater has picked up
- 10:07a lot of push lately. How come some big deal they've been working on
- 10:11at the plant and he makes me sick? It's the first sniff of his
- 10:15success, and send me all his hats are too small, especially his old
- 10:18hats. Honey, you can't blame the guy if he's really on his way
- 10:22up. Now, can you listen, Mac, I'll tell you him and
- 10:24the whole world something. Nobody is going to put little Angie on the skids
- 10:28if there's a heave hole pulled around here, mister hopshot slater himself, or
- 10:31get it and ride in the neck. So if you have to be snooping
- 10:35for him, Marlow, you can potter right back and tell him so,
- 10:37now beat it. It's not a bad idea. Oh, by the way,
- 10:41what's Angie stand for? Angelica? But don't count on it, brun,
- 10:46don't count on As I went down the front steps, the cigar and
- 10:56the black Pierce Harrow lined up on me again and followed me as I crossed
- 11:01the street and get into my car. It was still pointing at me as
- 11:03I drove away. But after all, the street was public property and the
- 11:07guy could smoke a cigar if he wanted to. Oh. By the time
- 11:11I knocked on the front door of the Rawlins home, I was braced for
- 11:13a deluge of tears and a session of red eyed hysteria. So I was
- 11:16caught off balanced by the handsome blonde woman of thirty five with a ry,
- 11:22crisp voistline, who was cool, calm, and well collected in green slacks.
- 11:26She introduced herself as Lucille Rawlins. Sit down, mister Marlow. You
- 11:31said you're a friend of Bent. That's right, missus Rawlins. I stopped
- 11:35by to offer my condolences, but apparently condolences aren't much in order to day.
- 11:39No tears, not even crocodile tears. I'm not a hypocrite, mister
- 11:43Marlowe. That's why I merely stanned and confused over this terrible accident. And
- 11:50I'm not sure yet how I feel. Yeah, it was an excellent all
- 11:54right, especially since that leaky fuel line had caused it was repaired a week
- 11:56ago. It had been repaired. Oh yeah, it's interesting thing, isn't
- 12:00Who are you? Marlow I'm a private detective and I know a lot more
- 12:03than that. I know, for instance, that the insurance on the boat
- 12:07alone will keep you in pretty do Dads for several years, and that's only
- 12:09a drop in a bucket. Mister Marlow, I think you'd better leave and
- 12:13I think you better climb down off that high horse and listen, because I
- 12:16haven't even started yet. Ben was a hated man by Pittman, by Slater,
- 12:20and maybe by you. And I can prove he didn't die accidentally,
- 12:22baby, So I'd like some nice straight answers. Huh, when did you
- 12:26see Pittman last? I've never seen Walter Pittman. I don't even know what
- 12:28he looks like. Ben and I were married two years ago. He broke
- 12:33with Pittman long before that. But you're pretty chummy with Arthur Slater. That's
- 12:35a lie. We hardly spoke until a week ago. You picked a poor
- 12:39time to get friendly, baby. Listen here, Marlow. Mister Slater I
- 12:43ran into each other purely by accident. One afternoon last week. I happened
- 12:48to stop in at a small bar and downtown Los Angeles. Mister Slater was
- 12:52there at the table talking with some man a stranger to me. When he
- 12:56saw me, he came over. He seemed upset. No upset, there
- 13:01anyone else here in there. I know my Maide went out the movie.
- 13:05I heard something and no, it sounded like it came to the service points.
- 13:07Want to have a look. I don't know what. Somebody turned them
- 13:11off look out bullets, which had been intended for Lucilla. It only traveled
- 13:22with to the kitchen. But miraculous they both had missed. However, it
- 13:24had thrown them moved out fast, because when I got through the service poorts
- 13:26and into the backyard, nothing stirred except the restless ends of a pepper tree.
- 13:31But a second later a heavy clanking motor rod on the side street,
- 13:35and I got to the fence just in time to see a box car on
- 13:37rubber tires skid around the corner. It was a black pierced arrow. I
- 13:46went back to the house, found the master switch and turned on the lights.
- 13:50Lucilla, face trained and bloodles, stood in the kitchen door and watched
- 13:52me. A hole had been punched in the back screen door, and on
- 13:56the floor there was a strange object which you been used to unhooked the lock.
- 14:01It looked like an oversized bobby pin wearing rubber pants, which didn't mean
- 14:05a thing to me, but to Lucilla, who stared at it like it
- 14:07was a centipede she just found in a cream puppet meant plenty. Ben what
- 14:13it's like, Ben himself with here like he wasn't killed at all. What
- 14:18are you talking about? What is this thing anyway? I don't know,
- 14:24part of some newould invention he was working on for the last month. Been
- 14:28carried two or three of these things with him everything. Look, Lucilla,
- 14:31whe's your phone right there? Ollow, you don't support friend of mine,
- 14:39he'd better be in too. It's matter Mallow. Busy, Yeah, yeah,
- 14:43Busy's hated talking to someone who has gone out after leaving the phone off
- 14:46the hook. And either way, Lucy, that makes my friend very busy.
- 15:03In just a moment, we will return to the second act of the
- 15:05Adventures of Philip Marlowe. But first, it may have taken a little detective
- 15:09work finding a much wanted man last week, but an unprecedented number of listeners
- 15:15seem to have turned Philip marlow for Jack Benny's largest audience this season found him
- 15:20here on his opening show on CBS Tomorrow night. Jack will be back with
- 15:24Mary Dennis, Phil Rochester and Don for more of the fun that's made the
- 15:28Jack Benny Show the number one comedy in radio. You'll find him right here
- 15:33on CBS every Sunday at seven Eastern Standard Time, and now with our star
- 15:39Gerald Moore. We returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story
- 15:45The Restless Day, and I left Lucille Rowlins with Feminine Target for the night.
- 15:56I hited for Angie Gordon's, where I'd first seen the man with a
- 16:00cigar in his face, who I suddenly thinkured might be Waller Pittman, And
- 16:03as I drove, I felt like my brains had spent the night playing lead
- 16:07frog in a squirrel caged Because anyway I call a dice, every one of
- 16:11my clients suspected of murdering him to somebody else. Just to keep things from
- 16:15making any sense at all, I suspected my client. I'd pulled up near
- 16:18Angis and saw the Pierce Arrow Park lights and a man with cigar out.
- 16:22When I got close to the bungalow door, I knew that the lady was
- 16:26at home and that she was receiving a gentleman caller more or less me.
- 16:29Your name is Smith, which incidentally I don't believe. And then you start
- 16:33asking a lot of very personal questions half cozy, no, please, you
- 16:37do not understand there are certain things about the death of Ben Hollins that I
- 16:41must know things that mean a lot to me. How much a lot?
- 16:45Well, one hundred dollars maybe. Now, don't tell me that's how you
- 16:51could step into that briefcase there in your hand. Listen, girl, I
- 16:55must know whether that explosion on the boat was an accident or not the police
- 17:00let it go as an accident. Never mind that you are sleetos girl.
- 17:03You must know something about him as well as the other one who was here.
- 17:07Now you tell me, stay away me, your big lug. I
- 17:11don't know anything you heard the lady Patman. Let go? How do you
- 17:18know my name? I read tea leaves? And why we're all asking questions?
- 17:21You mind telling me why you were throwing bullets at the China Air on
- 17:22Missus Rowlands. I did no such thing. I don't even know missus Holler.
- 17:26You're a liar. It's dull as the sour kraft. A gun in
- 17:30your pocket will prove it. I have no gun in my pocket here.
- 17:33Look for yourself, all right, I will. But if it's all the
- 17:37same to you, I'll start with your briefcase. I'll give me that why
- 17:38so you can get to the gun first. Because all right, all right,
- 17:45mister smart man, go ahead and look see for yourself that there's absolutely
- 17:51nothing there that concerns you. And don't look so astonished. Friend, It's
- 18:00called a gun, why you little? Uh? I skip it? Mallow.
- 18:03It isn't my idea of returning a favor, but it is good business,
- 18:08you see, baby. Little Angie sells out to the highest bidder.
- 18:14And no matter how I add things up, that isn't you? So exit
- 18:18Pittman huh briefcase? And what are you staring at that? That little gadget
- 18:25there must have fallen out of Pittman's briefcase? Eh? What is it?
- 18:30Twin brother of a night of I found a little while ago rubber pants included.
- 18:33What are you talking about? Marlow? Nothing? Baby? Just tell
- 18:36me how long I sit here? As long as you life? Now,
- 18:41you see, Marlow, I just can't afford to let you get the pitman
- 18:45ahead of me. Yeah, that good business you were talking about? Uh
- 18:48huh. After all, Gal's got to make a living one way or another,
- 18:56Marna doesn't she. I was roomed at debate Angie's point, but no
- 19:03time, so I skipped her invitation for a drink, both promised and threatened
- 19:08to see her again, and headed to my car and the only direction left,
- 19:11a residence of the local pivot man, mister Rolthis Slater and I got
- 19:15to within a block of the place, I parked and then approached, slowly,
- 19:18keeping in the shadows all the way. The house turned out to be
- 19:22as dark and quiet as the inside of a coffin. I was about to
- 19:26leave when some noise a dozen yards behind me said that I was no longer
- 19:30alone. I turned quietly and got ready for what I figured would be a
- 19:33reunion with my old buddy Wall of Pittnum. But I was wrong. Sneaking
- 19:38through a nearby clump of orange trees with all the deafness of an ox with
- 19:41bunyan trouble was no one else but my client, Ben Rollins. When I
- 19:45called his name out loud, he ran toward me, arms and legs flailing
- 19:48the wind like a Kansas scarecrow caught in a tornado. Lolla. I've been
- 19:52looking all over you, Rollins. Why aren't you back in my apartment where
- 19:56you're supposed to be. I couldn't wait any longer. I was afraid something
- 19:59at happened to you when you didn't call. I was sure of it.
- 20:02I thought you might be here, Slater, but I did call, and
- 20:04all I got was a busy signal about an hour ago. But that was
- 20:07a friend of yours. He wanted to know if you'd play cards with him
- 20:10tonight. How do you believe me? Now? The time being is incidentally
- 20:15rollins? Do these mean anything to you? These oversized bobby pins? Good
- 20:19lord? The curlers? Where did you get those curlers? Marlow? They
- 20:22should be my safe and I found one at your house and the other in
- 20:26a briefcase to belong the wall of pitment, Marlow. These are samples of
- 20:30my newest invention, these fair curlers. They can produce a home permanent wave
- 20:34overnight that will last for six months. It's my brilliance to me. If
- 20:40you live, yes, it should be easy to figure out who wanted to
- 20:45kill me? And not so sure if you didn't even know these were missing?
- 20:51Why should someone have to kill you to get hold of them? And
- 20:52second of all, how come the shootings still going on? What shooting is
- 20:56you're talking about over at your place? Somebody tried to kill your wife there
- 20:59just before I And that brings us right back to your alibi about talking to
- 21:03a bora at the time. It's a little too, pat Rawlins. Besides,
- 21:07that curler could very easily have dropped out of your pocket. Why should
- 21:08I shoot at Lucille the best reason in the books. You wanted to kill
- 21:11her, And when that yacht business almost boomerang down you, you still hadn't
- 21:15changed your mind, and that led to this whole routine with me, devil
- 21:18Builders, Patsy and star witness boards. You're out of your mind, Mallow.
- 21:22I couldn't have set that explosion on the yachta the tap for Lucille.
- 21:25Why not? Because it was on account of me that Lucille wasn't on the
- 21:29yachta. So that night, after we argued, we decided not to spend
- 21:33any more time under the same roof. Lucille said that suited half fine,
- 21:38and she'd sleep on the yacht. And we let him go at that till
- 21:41about noon on Friday, and you got small about things and said the yacht
- 21:45was yours, maybe that you'd sleep on it. Yes, I was just
- 21:48bickering. Last a minute, Rowlins. I've heard enough, and I think
- 21:51I finally understand this whole screwy deal. I know for sure, just as
- 21:53soon as I can make one single phone call to your house, we'll get
- 21:57back to Slater. Come on. When I got to a telephone and throw
- 22:08to the maid at the Rowlins place, I was almost positive that in another
- 22:11minute i'd have both a solid answer for my client a couple of clumsy customers
- 22:15for the law. When the shaky voice at the other end of the tube
- 22:18told me that Lucille had just left the house in high gear after mumbling something
- 22:22about a place called inspiration Point. I stopped being confident and started to worry.
- 22:29And when I tossed the jackpot question at the maid and got the winning
- 22:30answer, that worry became something worse, and it must have showed me.
- 22:37What is it, Marl What did you find to much? Explain? Now?
- 22:40Where's inspiration Point? Wrong? About a mile south of here, straight
- 22:42along the shore? Good? What kind of a car does your wife drive
- 22:45for Blue Nash? What's inspiration Point got to do with Lucille? Marlo?
- 22:49Everything? Now? Look, you call the cops and tell them to get
- 22:52out there as fast as they can. Do you get me as fast as
- 22:56they can. Inspiration Point turned out to be an acre of windswept rock that
- 23:08overlooked the cold January Sea. After I saw Lucille's empty car, I crept,
- 23:14staggered, and fell down a narrow, winding trail that led from the
- 23:17road to a palmon tree itself. I was afraid that I was going to
- 23:19be too late to stop what I was sure was I hastily scheduled murder.
- 23:23But a minute later, when I rounded the last crazy turn in the trail,
- 23:26I felt better because standing only a couple of yards away from me,
- 23:30her hair slapping wildly against the upturned color of a coat very much alive,
- 23:34was Lucille Rowlins, and I was about to breathe a sigh of relief when
- 23:38suddenly I caught the expression in her eyes. I turned to follow the line
- 23:44of an unblinking gaze, and I knew that I hadn't arrived any too soon,
- 23:48because a lady was being held at the point of a gun, a
- 23:49gun held by Arthur Slater. I closed my hand tied around the cove thirty
- 23:55eight my pocket moved closer. When you pulled me in the house, you
- 23:59said my art was alive and with you. Why did you lie to because
- 24:02I knew that would bring you running, and I had to be alone with
- 24:04you, Lucille, so I could do what I missed doing last time.
- 24:07You mean the yacht you did that, yes, but somehow other Ben was
- 24:11out there instead of you, So that accident was a waste of time.
- 24:15But this one, the bereaved wife jumped a pail to her death from the
- 24:19edge of inspiration points. Won't be good. Why lady, why do you
- 24:22want to kill me? There's no time to explain. I'll see you and
- 24:26we'll take time. Slater, harlow you damoo. You gotta kill me?
- 24:33Yes, honey, I know he had to because he told your husband's intention
- 24:37to sell a wall of Pittman. He was going to go into business with
- 24:40him. Now when the cops get here, he's going first to a hospital
- 24:42and then to jail. The grand larssone and attempted murder can't admitted. What
- 24:48about then? Ben was a near miss, honey, nothing more. You'll
- 24:52see what I mean in a minute. When Lucille found out that Bend was
- 25:04still alive, there were a lot of tears and promises to be good from
- 25:07both bodies. And it wasn't until an hour had gone by and the police
- 25:11had already booked both Slater and Pittman, who was picked up heading back for
- 25:15la But mister and missus Rawlins were any conditioned to sit down and talk things
- 25:19over, even with the help of coffee and cigarettes. Ne Rolins home and
- 25:23Loaho scheme. Marler was designed by Slater, who was my business manager,
- 25:27had access to the new Curlers. That's Ryan. Knowing how Waller Pittman felt
- 25:32about you, Slater secretly contacted him to handle the manufacturing agency. I see
- 25:38a few changes in the design, and the whole thing would have been patented
- 25:41and on the market while you and Slater pretended that Pittman was a stranger to
- 25:45him. Huh, were still laboring away at last minute changes, and when
- 25:49we learned about Pittman's products, Slater would act a surprise to them. Here.
- 25:55Yes, so right, Lucille, that was the plan. But it
- 25:57fell apart. See it fell apart when you accidentally ran into Slayter in that
- 26:02small bar in downtown La. Do you remember, yeah, when he was
- 26:04with Pittman, the man you described me as the stranger, Yes, of
- 26:07course, all right. Well, he realized then that with Pittman's product the
- 26:11success, you would sooner or later see a picture of Pittman, a newly
- 26:15rich inventor, and recognize him as the man you saw with Slater before Pittman's
- 26:19product was on the market. Well, that meant that Slater either had to
- 26:22get rid of Lucy or give up his entire plan. Have you got a
- 26:26match, mister? No, no, I'm gonna give them up. But
- 26:30Marlow, was Pittman involved in the murder attempt to Oh? No, no,
- 26:34he drew the line at the theft. See when he found out that
- 26:37you had died mysteriously, he turned up here to check on Slater because he
- 26:41couldn't afford to be mixed up in your murder. I see, But how
- 26:45did you figure all this, Marlow? Well, after I had tangled with
- 26:48everybody, I was no place. Angie Gordon was looking for an angle.
- 26:52You Lucille were getting shot at for a doll and Pittman and Slater were not
- 26:56on the same team, at least as far as the business on the was
- 27:00concerned. Nobody seemed to have a clear cut motive. But when I told
- 27:03you that Lucille herself was supposed to stay on the yacht that night, you
- 27:07had the answer. That was the time after I called your house and asked
- 27:10the maid the jackpot question, which was who aside from you, then knew
- 27:14that Lucille was going to sleep on the yacht Friday night, and she said
- 27:17Slater didn't she yeah, said something else too. She also said that you
- 27:21had left for inspiration point in a big hurry. Yeah. Then Slater tried
- 27:26to kill me, first on the yacht, second in the house here,
- 27:29and finally out on the point. But in the end it worked out fine,
- 27:33darling, because the third time was the charm h for right. Well,
- 27:55by the time I was through tying in all the loose ends for my
- 27:56client and his wife, it was three o'clock in the morning, and I
- 28:00was dog tired all over again. When I got into my car and started
- 28:04away from the place, then and Lucilla were standing in the doorway, waving
- 28:07at me and smiling. So as I drove back toward la I forgot about
- 28:12the sleep I was missing and thought about them, a couple who couldn't get
- 28:17along until one or the other of them had been robbed, dynamited and shot
- 28:22at. Yeah, I guess it's really so. As the old Bromide has
- 28:27it, the path of true love never does run smooth smoothly, it smoothly
- 28:36hm hm oh well. The Adventures of Philip Barlow created by Raymond Chandler,

- 30:44Systems. Welcome back. Well, a good story. It started out a
- 31:02little bit slow, I thought, but really got interesting. Shirley Mitchell making
- 31:07an interesting appearance as the girlfriend, which is different because usually when we hear
- 31:15Shirley Mitchell it's in a lot more comedical. And she was famous for things
- 31:19like the Great Guilder Sleeve. And I always like how they work in these
- 31:22little happy endings, you know. I just finished it as of this recording,
- 31:26reading the Philip Marlow book The Little Sister, and you know this place
- 31:32where you know, the police and Marlowe are cooperative with one another. It's
- 31:37almost exactly opposite of the book. But I don't books, but I like
- 31:41this. The way it ended, it was pretty nice and brought something positive
- 31:45out of poor Philip Marlow's restless day. Now we turned to some listener comments
- 31:52and feedback from our Canadian listeners. Ninety six Navy Rights. It's exactly regarding
- 31:59our it's exactly what it says, and it works. The narrator, Adam
- 32:02is amiable and offers a plethora of history and information before and after each episode.
- 32:08Keep up the great work. Thank you for all your time. Really
- 32:12enjoyable and truck Trucker says quality great, the memories even more. Thank you
