- 0:34Welcome to drive through episode number 31.
- 0:38This is our monthly recap where we put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:42motorsport, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:45After some minor Technical difficulties.
- 0:49Are you guys ready for this?
- 0:51Yes.
- 0:51I can now fully concentrate on my unpreparedness that my technical
- 0:56difficulties are resolved.
- 0:58All you did was buy time.
- 1:00So Brad could read the articles this month.
- 1:02And you know how many articles I read?
- 1:04Zero.
- 1:05How many more is that than usual?
- 1:07Bingo.
- 1:08Now let's pull up to window number one for some news.
- 1:13Just news.
- 1:15Just news.
- 1:15That's it.
- 1:16All we have is news.
- 1:17Well, we've got news about some of the stuff we've been doing.
- 1:21Let's talk about Rolex.
- 1:22Oh yeah.
- 1:22Let's do that.
- 1:23I'm not talking about the watch, although the watch is involved.
- 1:26I mean, like the actual race, the Rolex 24 hour race in Daytona.
- 1:30It has been five years since we have been to Rolex in person.
- 1:34Although we religiously watch it every year, regardless of what's going on.
- 1:38This is the first time we've been there on purpose, right?
- 1:42In person.
- 1:43This is also Tanya's, if I'm remembering correctly, her first
- 1:46official professional race attendance.
- 1:49Endurance race, sports car race.
- 1:51Not professional because I've been to F1 twice.
- 1:54That's true.
- 1:55Endurance.
- 1:56That's right.
- 1:56Endurance specifically.
- 1:58And?
- 1:59And?
- 2:00Let's get her thoughts.
- 2:01Florida side.
- 2:02No, just kidding.
- 2:05They'll be talking about Florida, man.
- 2:06No, it was fun.
- 2:07I think it's more accessible, is probably the first word that comes to
- 2:11mind, more accessible to someone versus having had the experience multiple
- 2:17times of going to a Formula One race where now the tickets are even way
- 2:21more expensive than when I ever went.
- 2:23And then you're there for such a brief time.
- 2:27You don't get access to anything.
- 2:29This is the complete opposite, where basically, if your feet can take you
- 2:34there, you can go there, and it's way more affordable in terms of ticket price and
- 2:39what that's granting you access for, and even if you went all out on everything
- 2:43that you could get access for, it still pales in comparison to a Formula 1 ticket.
- 2:46I don't know how that compares.
- 2:49To NASCAR or other forms.
- 2:52I've never been to a NASCAR race either, but it was definitely
- 2:56an interesting experience.
- 2:57I will say what I didn't expect was the car show that was
- 3:01happening at the same time.
- 3:03Oh, in the paddock in the paddock parking lots and even like the
- 3:07parking lot outside of the venue.
- 3:09It was like everybody.
- 3:11Came from somewhere, tons of different out of state tags or, you
- 3:15know, different specialty place.
- 3:17They pulled their garage queens out of the garage and took
- 3:20them for a stroll to Daytona.
- 3:21That's aside from marks that had specific corrals, like the Porsche Corral, BMW
- 3:27had a Corral, and et cetera, et cetera, where they're showcasing You know, members
- 3:31cars and whatnot, but still, like, if you're just walking around the parking
- 3:35lots, people had some pretty cool stuff.
- 3:37And so I wasn't expecting that.
- 3:39I didn't know that was a thing, but that was pretty cool.
- 3:40So there's a whole other experience of not just watching the race, but
- 3:44car watching as you walk through the infield and around the outside.
- 3:48I always feel like events like Rolex, petite salons, other ones that we've been
- 3:53to, it's more family feeling because even when you wander around the infields or
- 3:58the outfields, like places like Rhode, Atlanta, there's people everywhere.
- 4:01They're camping all over the place, bonfires parties.
- 4:04I mean, the longer the race, the more chaotic it is.
- 4:08You don't get that same experience.
- 4:10Like you said, in an F1 race, that's 90 minutes and it's over.
- 4:13I mean, there's other races that happen, you know, headliners and
- 4:16things like that, that go on at those other races, but it's very different
- 4:19in that endurance IMSA setting.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:22There's other races.
- 4:23Cause I don't really have like Porsche cup races or vintage races, blah, blah, blah.
- 4:26And like the Saturday before formula one and, or in the morning,
- 4:30those go by really quick too.
- 4:31Yeah.
- 4:3145 minute hour races or something.
- 4:33It's like, okay.
- 4:34By time you've found your seat and sat down, it's like half the race is over.
- 4:37This is a lot harder.
- 4:38Well, at least the Austin track is a lot harder to kind of navigate around.
- 4:41You know, Tanya mentioned how the track was very accessible,
- 4:46much more accessible than.
- 4:48Say Austin, but dare I say it wasn't really from a walking standpoint, it was
- 4:53kind of one way in one way out to get to the infield, which is kind of frustrating.
- 4:58Basically, if you're on one end of the track, you've got to
- 5:00basically walk all the way around.
- 5:03The entire infield to get to the outfield or to get to the stands and vice versa.
- 5:08So if you do decide to go to Rolex, Daytona, make sure you
- 5:11bring your walking shoes with you.
- 5:13Cause you're going to need them or take the trams or take the tram
- 5:16with 15 million other people that are doing the exact same thing.
- 5:20That's pretty simple to navigate around Daytona and it's a 24 hour race.
- 5:23So there's always something going on.
- 5:26So there's always something to see.
- 5:28And the visibility of the track is pretty good.
- 5:31Multiple spots, you're always with the action.
- 5:35So to speak, that helps.
- 5:36So there's zero elevation change at Daytona.
- 5:40Yes, you are the elevation change.
- 5:43When you're in the grandstands, the elevation change was like walking
- 5:46through the tunnel to like, go under the oval and come back out the other side.
- 5:52From that perspective, you're right.
- 5:53Daytona plus the infield.
- 5:55It's a pretty simple configuration compared to something more challenging
- 5:58like the Glen or road Atlanta, but still the experience when you go to
- 6:02those other tracks is very similar.
- 6:04Though those races are shorter.
- 6:06The support races are quite long.
- 6:08I mean, well, let's take Watkins Glen as an example.
- 6:10The official race is six hours long, but the Tioga downs race is four hours.
- 6:14So you're there in the day for 10 hours of GT racing.
- 6:18Even though it's, you know, they're not consecutive, it's just different
- 6:20groups running throughout the day.
- 6:22And then there's the other support races and headliners that go with that.
- 6:25So IMSA events are just action packed from sunup to sundown in
- 6:29some cases, multiple times over.
- 6:32You can't knock the value for money.
- 6:33No, it was like what?
- 6:3575 bucks for the tickets.
- 6:3675 for how many hours of actual legitimate racing.
- 6:40Yeah, it's ridiculous on top of that this year was the biggest field in Rolex
- 6:47history and like the longest time 61 cars started on grid amazingly enough.
- 6:52Daytona is so big it didn't feel like we were watching cars on the beltway running
- 6:57around and getting in each other's way.
- 6:59And obviously traffic splits up throughout the day and throughout
- 7:02the evening and conditions change and things happen in cars break.
- 7:05But.
- 7:06It was pretty exciting to see everybody mixing it up.
- 7:08And obviously we have new classes, new cars, new everything.
- 7:13I felt the racing personally, it was like a long test weekend because there
- 7:18were so many breakages, so many new cars, some of the cars, I think we're a little
- 7:23disappointing and maybe they'll get better throughout the season as, especially
- 7:26as we get closer to Lamont's I'm not as familiar with that whole balance of
- 7:29power thing or balance of performance, excuse me, whatever you want to call it.
- 7:33It was just.
- 7:34Often frustrating to watch, because to watch lap after lap of Go Iron Dames, the
- 7:41all female team driving the Lamborghini Huracan, to watch that car lap after
- 7:46lap not be able to get around a 911, I'm like, you've got to be kidding me.
- 7:51When in real life, that Huracan would destroy that 911.
- 7:54After other conversations, Tanya was very disappointed in the lack of a manual
- 7:58transmission in any of the vehicles.
- 8:02That's been a while since they've had manuals in those cars.
- 8:05What the hell kind of race cars are these?
- 8:06What's the point?
- 8:07They don't even shift their own gears.
- 8:09Exactly.
- 8:10We need another point of failure.
- 8:12Maybe we should throw some amateurs out there.
- 8:14It would make the racing more interesting.
- 8:16You miss a shift.
- 8:17I mean, you've blown that lap, right?
- 8:19And somebody gets around you.
- 8:21That is frustrating.
- 8:21And that's what we complain about a lot.
- 8:23Complain is a strong word, but I have an issue with it.
- 8:26I mean, some people like it.
- 8:27Balance of power is great for television, but I feel as though, you know,
- 8:32interviewing drivers over the course of this last season and talking to other
- 8:35people, the consensus often seems to be that, you know, a it's out of their
- 8:39control, the sanctioning bodies make all those decisions, but It's not racing
- 8:44as racing was intended to be years ago.
- 8:46It's like, if your car can't compete, build power to weight or
- 8:49whatever, build a better mousetrap when it comes down to it, it hampers
- 8:53innovation, the technological leap.
- 8:56And I guess that's where racing series like F1 and IndyCar come into play because
- 9:01they do have those less restrictions and they don't have a balance of
- 9:05performance or something like that.
- 9:06It's a giant BOP because.
- 9:08They're basically spec races.
- 9:10All formula cars are the same.
- 9:11We're going to talk about them more when we talk about the unveiling
- 9:14of the 2023 cars and stuff and the Indy cars are the same.
- 9:17It's like, it's 2 chassis and you know, 2 motors and everybody
- 9:21basically drives the same car.
- 9:22So sports car is always been grounded in the manufacturers are coming to the
- 9:26table to do battle with one another.
- 9:29But as soon as balance of power became what it is today, I think we
- 9:33lost some of, to your point, Brad, that ingenuity, that imagination.
- 9:38Like I've joked before, you don't see the six wheel TRLs and the
- 9:41chaparrals with the fans on the bottom with the front wheel drive Nissan.
- 9:44Exactly.
- 9:45All that stuff is just gone.
- 9:47You know, watching the Corvette C8.
- 9:49I'm not really impressed with that car.
- 9:51I'm a Corvette, a team Corvette fan, but I'm not really impressed with the C8 R
- 9:55bring back the C7 R although I will say.
- 9:58The pit crew was doing a phenomenal job.
- 10:01The car would get passed two or three times by the Aston
- 10:05Martin, kept getting around them.
- 10:06And then they pull into the pits at the same time.
- 10:09The Corvette was consistently out in front of the Aston
- 10:12Martin, every single pit stop.
- 10:14So the pit crew was on point, but the car itself just could not.
- 10:18Hold it.
- 10:18Disappointing.
- 10:19I will say it's more fun to watch on TV with a group of friends sitting
- 10:23around smoking and joking, as they say.
- 10:26But one thing I do love about the EMSA series is the speed differentials between
- 10:30the classes, the prototype one, the prototype two cars, the fact that they're
- 10:35after, what is it, three or four laps, they're lapping the GT cars is insane.
- 10:39And they're all out there racing together.
- 10:41It's just.
- 10:42Coverage on TV is better, right?
- 10:44They're giving you all the angles, but you can't really.
- 10:47Fathom the closing rates, you know, the breaking speeds into the corners, things
- 10:51like that, when you see it live and the sound itself, we've talked about that
- 10:54before, a totally different experience.
- 10:57Speaking of the sound, something was missing this year.
- 11:00And I think, you know, exactly what it was.
- 11:02Yeah, it was the other Corvette and the Corvettes old motor.
- 11:06Yes.
- 11:07The C seven are the sound of the earth ripping itself apart.
- 11:12Trying to stay together when it's Corvette pounds down the road.
- 11:16It was just.
- 11:17Gone.
- 11:18We used to say that the Lexus sounded as good and the Mercedes sounded as good.
- 11:21Correction.
- 11:22The Mercedes sounds bad.
- 11:24No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 11:26You see, that's where you're wrong, but I digress.
- 11:29So the C7R was missing.
- 11:31I think some of the LMP, whatever the top class LMDH, the GTP cars, some of
- 11:37the, the LMDH cars sounded really, really good, but they still didn't have that.
- 11:43Pounding on your chest, really throaty, nice growl.
- 11:48So I missed the C7R sound, which is a big part of going to these races.
- 11:52That as you mentioned, the auditory feelings and everything you get.
- 11:55The faster cars.
- 11:56Yes.
- 11:56The speed differential is insane.
- 11:58The flashing of the lights when you're coming up on traffic, so annoying.
- 12:02If I was a GT car driver, I would purposefully sit in the middle of the
- 12:05road and make you fucking go around me at the worst part of the corner.
- 12:10You can sit there and flash me.
- 12:11The restarts.
- 12:13For no reason in the last two hours of the race, three hours of the race.
- 12:16That's new too, right?
- 12:18The way they're doing restarts now where they've adopted the whole NASCAR idea.
- 12:23SRO does this too, where they're re gridding.
- 12:25Dude, we lost how many laps watching them re grid up and then go to green again.
- 12:31And then it was like, Oh, we have not any action for a while.
- 12:33Let's throw a yellow.
- 12:36Well, not even that.
- 12:36It was also because the Porsche, uh, LMDH car was trying to catch up.
- 12:40So, I'm sensing a bit of Porsche and IMSA collusion.
- 12:45Forever unclean.
- 12:46One of my favorite parts of the race was after every yellow, and after
- 12:50every restart, the safety car, Coming around out of the bus stop would floor
- 12:56it and you can see it just kind of take off and it was like, God damn,
- 12:59that McCann has some legs on it.
- 13:01Holy shit.
- 13:02So I was pretty impressed with both the CT, the black wing and the, uh,
- 13:05the McCann or whatever the McCann turbo or whatever it was, they were
- 13:09ripping coming out of the final turn.
- 13:11That was always fun to watch.
- 13:12The checkers outside the track was greater than the concessions inside.
- 13:17It was good value for money, actually.
- 13:18That was good.
- 13:19Eats great value for money.
- 13:20Yeah, the weather was phenomenal.
- 13:21I think this is the first year that the weather was clear,
- 13:23the entire race, and warm too.
- 13:26It was actually very, very pleasant.
- 13:28I don't think you got any lower than 55, 50, 55 even at night.
- 13:31It was really nice.
- 13:32Would you do it again and if the answer's no.
- 13:35Would you consider a different IMSA race?
- 13:38Both.
- 13:40I would do it again, and I would go to a different one.
- 13:44Maybe VIR, the Glenn, mid Ohio?
- 13:47I'm hoping to go to VIR myself, with my car.
- 13:52I need a new shirt!
- 13:54As you mentioned, there were way more people than 2018, so that did kind of,
- 13:58you know, Take away from me from the experience because we didn't get to do
- 14:02as much as we had in 2018 because there was just too many people to wait through.
- 14:07I did say that it's better to watch on TV with a bunch of friends, but I
- 14:11do want to go again and actually stay in the infield and camp just once.
- 14:15Yeah, I think that would be like that could add to have a home base.
- 14:19actually in the infield to go to and from, I think would make the
- 14:23experience a little bit better on site.
- 14:25Do you see the appeal of endurance sports car racing now that you've
- 14:28seen it in person versus on TV?
- 14:30I don't know that I needed to see it in person, right?
- 14:34It's not that I was unaware of this discipline of racing
- 14:37or have never seen it before.
- 14:39Road racing tends to be far more interesting sometimes because the
- 14:43top prototype cars aside, it's The lower class, it's like, it's an
- 14:46911, it's a Mercedes, it's a Lexus.
- 14:48I can relate to these cars.
- 14:50Like, even a Huracan, technically you could relate to it, but that's a little
- 14:53bit out of my price bracket, right?
- 14:55That's what makes road racing a little more interesting, because
- 14:57it's like, ooh, look at that Audi A4.
- 14:59Yeah, I have an Audi.
- 15:00I don't, but I have an Audi A4.
- 15:02I have this BMW, right?
- 15:03Versus like, Formula 1, it's like, I don't have a fucking Formula car.
- 15:09You know, and it's like NASCAR is like, okay, yeah, and I
- 15:11don't have a NASCAR and okay.
- 15:13Cause it says Camry on the front ain't no Camry.
- 15:15That's like that Supra that they have in NASCAR.
- 15:17Now I don't, that has no relation to the real thing.
- 15:21That's all I'm saying.
- 15:22But yes, I hope that as more people, you know, maybe shift their
- 15:26attention or maybe getting bored of other disciplines that they.
- 15:30Turn their eyes to endurance sports car racing, because to
- 15:33your point, it is really relatable and it's really exciting too.
- 15:37I look forward to the rest of the season.
- 15:38I mean, obviously I'm looking forward to Lamont's I'll be recording from France
- 15:43and things like that while I'm there.
- 15:44So I'm super excited to be at the crown jewel of sports car
- 15:47endurance racing this year.
- 15:48So looking forward to more on that, but we do have to move on.
- 15:52We have to talk about some other things that happened in the last month.
- 15:55I know we've covered this in a another special episode that people can
- 15:59tune into on our Patreon, but some quick thoughts on the DC auto show.
- 16:02Well, that about wraps that up.
- 16:05And if you want to know the full report, you can check it
- 16:07out for free on our Patreon.
- 16:09I just want to say, I went to the Richmond international auto show this weekend.
- 16:13Oh man.
- 16:14Because we're kind of in the market for a larger vehicle to replace her pilot.
- 16:18If the DC auto show womp, the Richmond auto show was The DC auto
- 16:25show to retract my statement was actually the Toyota auto show.
- 16:30Yeah, 100 percent.
- 16:31Oh, nice.
- 16:31If you were looking for a Toyota, you needed to be At that show, they had every
- 16:38model possible and then some on display.
- 16:41And if you were tired of Toyota, you could go look at all the Hyundais.
- 16:44Toyota had probably 20 percent of the entire area, which unlike the
- 16:49DC convention center, the Richmond convention center is one floor.
- 16:53Toyota had 50 percent of one whole convention room area.
- 16:57Yeah, that's crazy.
- 16:58So I did try and sit in a Supra.
- 17:00And one thing that really grinds my gears about these auto shows
- 17:04is they disconnect the batteries.
- 17:05So all these vehicles with power seats, they have them set to someone,
- 17:09Eric or Tanya size, the person that moved them into the arena.
- 17:12So someone like me who wants to put the seat all the way back and, you
- 17:15know, get in and fiddle with things.
- 17:17Every car in the place is uncomfortable because I cannot adjust any of the seats.
- 17:21I thought there was a solution to this.
- 17:23It's like police Academy.
- 17:24You just come up and rip the seat out and you sit in the backseat.
- 17:27Isn't that how you do it in every car?
- 17:28I totally think I broke the third row seat of this Toyota Sienna that
- 17:32was allegedly sold to somebody.
- 17:34So if you're listening to this, you know, I hope it's covered under warranty.
- 17:39I'm sorry.
- 17:40Speaking of Hyundai's, we got to see a new one that we actually wasn't even on
- 17:45our radar and they call it the Ioniq 6.
- 17:48And so we had some choice.
- 17:49opinions about it.
- 17:50Maybe some choice words if you want to really summarize it down.
- 17:53It looks like a Saab.
- 17:54It looks like a Saab 900 from the 80s, and you'll never convince me otherwise.
- 17:59But what was shocking was the other day I spotted a commercial with
- 18:03all people, Evan Bacon, talking about how he loves his Ioniq 6.
- 18:09And it includes his daughter, but I don't know what her name is.
- 18:12But the punchline of the commercial was, you know, Ev, like Kev.
- 18:18What?
- 18:19Yeah, I don't understand.
- 18:20You know what this car looks like to me?
- 18:22It looks like the Oldsmobile Aurora with that giant swooping cabin.
- 18:29At first glance, Jon Capisci and I from Project Motoring, we came
- 18:33down the stairs and we said, what is that 9 11 looking thing?
- 18:36And then when you saw it in profile, you're like, That's a Saab 900 Turbo.
- 18:40But no, the reason I bring up commercials is because other things that happen
- 18:45in parts of the world where they don't care about things that go vroom, vroom,
- 18:48vroom, they go Omaha, 43, hut, hut, hut.
- 18:50We're talking about the Super Bowl and the commercials they're in.
- 18:54So let's get your guys recap on the 2023 automotive Super Bowl commercials.
- 18:59I have to be completely honest with you.
- 19:00I watched exactly 15 minutes of the Super Bowl before I was asleep.
- 19:05Was that the Rihanna part?
- 19:06So I missed the halftime show completely.
- 19:09So I watched one possession for each team and that was it, then I was done.
- 19:13That's all you needed.
- 19:14So I can't really speak to any of these commercials.
- 19:17So there was a bunch, I mean, obviously there's lists out there that have every
- 19:21commercial that was designed for the Super Bowl that aired before, during, and
- 19:25after, but they're specifically car ones.
- 19:27We've tried to highlight some of those.
- 19:29They come from Kia, Jeep, et cetera.
- 19:31So why don't we run through some of these really quickly, Tanya, and get
- 19:34your thoughts on the commercials.
- 19:35It felt like there were less car commercials in general than in
- 19:40past years, or maybe they were not quite as impactful in general.
- 19:46I don't know.
- 19:46They felt different.
- 19:47The main hitters that are usually there were missing.
- 19:50So maybe that's what kind of made the whole thing feel different.
- 19:52A little off in terms of the commercial experience when watching the Super Bowl.
- 19:56Last year was the one with Eugene Levy and the Nissan Z, yeah, and you always
- 20:01get the Audi ones, which you think is like the next transporter movies coming.
- 20:05Like there's these just kind of epic commercials out there.
- 20:07No.
- 20:08And this time we had Blinky Dad with Kia and Blinky being the
- 20:12little child's baby's pacifier.
- 20:15And this family that's gone somewhere in the mountains and then gets to the
- 20:19hotel and realizes that baby's missing Blinky and dad takes off in the Kia
- 20:23Telluride X Pro all terrain edition super all wheel drive SUV and he's
- 20:28tearing through the mountains and I forget if he's going across dirt snowed
- 20:32roads and hills and all this stuff.
- 20:34And at the bottom there's a disclaimer that says Professional
- 20:36driver on a closed course.
- 20:37Do not attempt at home.
- 20:38No, the disclaimer says don't drive your Telluride off road.
- 20:42It will break.
- 20:43Like, is this actually meant to be some Bronco, whatever, or Jeep
- 20:49Wrangler that can handle all this?
- 20:51I don't know.
- 20:52I mean, they had it shooting out of a cement, like the Italian
- 20:55job or pipe launching out of it.
- 20:57I'm like, yeah, launcher Keo.
- 20:58See what happens.
- 20:59It is a cool looking truck.
- 21:00Don't get me wrong, but yeah, I don't think it's marketed as like trail
- 21:04rated rugged off roader, you know, substitute for other brand here.
- 21:08But yeah, the binky dad thing, I don't know.
- 21:11Will Ferrell was back again for like the third year in a row, peddling.
- 21:15Some EV from General Motors.
- 21:17He was peddling all the EVs from General Motors.
- 21:19I like this commercial because it was the GMC whatever version, because that's how
- 21:25much I pay attention to GMC pickup trucks.
- 21:27I thought it was funny because it was GMC EVs and Netflix.
- 21:32And so he was driving through different Netflix TV shows.
- 21:36So there was The Walking Dead, there was Squid Game, there was Bridgerton,
- 21:39there was Stranger Things, there's like characters, actors, actresses from
- 21:44the actual like episodes that are like cameoing in here because in the beginning
- 21:47he gets bit by a Walking Dead zombie.
- 21:49In the end, he is a zombie driving the EV.
- 21:52Are they trying to tell you something?
- 21:53Cause I've said that about driving Hondas for a long time.
- 21:56Did you become numb?
- 21:57Yeah, exactly.
- 21:59They followed up with the Jeep electric boogie commercials.
- 22:03They've got variations of that for the 4XE platform.
- 22:06You see them now all the time.
- 22:07The Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee and, you know, snow up to their
- 22:10door handles doing 80 miles an hour.
- 22:12Yeah.
- 22:13This one wasn't bad.
- 22:14If this one was going through a safari, going through the forest, Going
- 22:18up the mountain, things like that.
- 22:20It was an upbeat commercial.
- 22:21It had the electric boogie woogie music playing.
- 22:24So you were happy.
- 22:25It had fun animals, smiling, that whole kind of thing.
- 22:27So it was a different tone than some of the other commercials.
- 22:30And it was just, you know, Hey, look how much fun you're going
- 22:33to have in our electric Jeep.
- 22:34You too can smile with giraffes.
- 22:36I will say the 4XE commercials, the new hybrid Jeep platforms do have my interest.
- 22:42I am curious to go test drive one to see what the torque is like.
- 22:46How it puts down the power, how it uses it.
- 22:48I mean, obviously we're accustomed to the Pacifica hybrid and how it functions.
- 22:52I am really curious how the Jeep works and that kind of stuff.
- 22:54So you got my attention.
- 22:56Stellantis.
- 22:57Speaking of Stellantis, the premature electrification commercial, it's
- 23:02like one of those pharmaceutical drug commercials for, yes.
- 23:05Yeah.
- 23:05But having these couples talk about how they bought electric trucks and
- 23:09they're always running out of juice and everything, it looks like it has the
- 23:12potential to be an excellent commercial.
- 23:14But does it have our disclaimer?
- 23:15If you suffer from Stellantis for more than four hours, please
- 23:18consult your nearest physician.
- 23:20Probably not.
- 23:22This commercial is all about the new Ram 1500 Rev, which they debuted at
- 23:27CES earlier this year and whatnot.
- 23:29So it's like how much better the Ram Rev is going to be in your life
- 23:32versus You know, everything else.
- 23:34It was a pretty good commercial.
- 23:35So definitely go back and watch it.
- 23:36If it's not named after a prehistoric lizard creature, nobody's going to buy it.
- 23:41And then there was 10.
- 23:44Okay.
- 23:44The only good thing about this movie was the scene of the alpha.
- 23:48And I was like, okay, it's another one.
- 23:50I don't think I saw nine.
- 23:52I don't know if I saw eight.
- 23:53I can't remember.
- 23:54And 10 going to be two parts, so it's really 10 and 11.
- 23:57Just like 5 and 6 were.
- 23:58And if you don't know what we're talking about yet, Fast and the Furious.
- 24:00Yes, I'm excited.
- 24:02Now that's what I call Fast and the Furious 137.
- 24:05Oh yeah, it is going to be like those now CDs.
- 24:07They're just going to go on forever.
- 24:09It's going to be Fast and the Furious 20, and it's going to be that scene from
- 24:12Days of Thunder where they're racing in the wheelchairs, except there'll be
- 24:16geriatric racing in the wheelchairs.
- 24:18Well no, now they're bringing in Jason Momoa to replace it.
- 24:21God knows who.
- 24:22So we'll just keep adding action heroes.
- 24:24It'll become like the expendables after a while.
- 24:27I think he's replacing the rock because the rock has not been back.
- 24:31The rock's too busy making turds like black Adam.
- 24:34So come on.
- 24:35That's because the rock and Vin Diesel can't work together.
- 24:38That's yeah.
- 24:38That's the real reason.
- 24:39The rock and Taye Diggs, they got into an argument.
- 24:42Then there's multiple people.
- 24:43Cause there was definitely a beef with the Vin Diesel.
- 24:45I think it all centers around Vin Diesel.
- 24:48All I'm going to say is.
- 24:50I haven't watched Slumberland, okay, which also stars Jason Momoa, which is based off
- 24:56of the cartoon or comic strip Little Nemo.
- 24:59Yes.
- 25:00The kid on the flying bed or whatever.
- 25:02There was an original Nintendo game based on it too.
- 25:04Blah, blah, blah.
- 25:05I don't know the full story.
- 25:07care.
- 25:07He's in that.
- 25:08And when the first scene of him sitting in the car, I swear to God, I was
- 25:12like, Oh my God, it's slumberland.
- 25:14Except he's like, gonna race a car.
- 25:16That other movie slumberland that you mentioned the little Nemo story,
- 25:20that's going to end up like the Aladdin Sinbad movie from the 90s.
- 25:26I had that thought.
- 25:27It's the Mandela effect.
- 25:28Like we all know it exists.
- 25:30It happened.
- 25:31It was a real thing.
- 25:32There's a trailer for it.
- 25:33And yet there is zero evidence.
- 25:35that it ever existed.
- 25:36If you ask Sinbad, he'll tell you.
- 25:38I don't know what you're talking about.
- 25:39It's lies.
- 25:40It's a conspiracy.
- 25:41The evidence is here.
- 25:42And now we've said it.
- 25:43There was a movie slumberland with Jason Momoa.
- 25:46You heard it here first, based off a little Nemo and the flying bed.
- 25:50There was a commercial that spoke to you.
- 25:52Did you get up out of your chair?
- 25:53Were you cheering at this kind of laughed and not because it's funny
- 25:57to see what was being depicted, but it's just like, funny because of all
- 26:02the troubles that they're facing.
- 26:04And who are we talking about, pray tell?
- 26:06Tesla.
- 26:07Oh, shucks.
- 26:08So the thing about this commercial actually is it did
- 26:10not air across all states.
- 26:12So this was Maryland and like I think two or three other states
- 26:17that this actually aired in.
- 26:18So the majority of people commercial.
- 26:21That's okay.
- 26:22We have a YouTube link for it.
- 26:24And it's this dawn project and it's basically the anti a false self
- 26:28driving some sort of advocacy group probably based out of California since
- 26:31California is actively trying to sue against the false naming of that.
- 26:36And they put together this whole video and they've got like little dummy
- 26:39toddlers and children that are like are walking across the street and just get
- 26:43run over by Teslas that aren't stopping.
- 26:46So.
- 26:46Now, I didn't make the video, so I am skeptical.
- 26:50I can be.
- 26:51Were they really in full self driving and didn't see them?
- 26:55Or is there a little bit of BS going on here to paint them in a bad light?
- 26:58I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
- 26:59There has definitely been other videos of Tesla's doing safety drives
- 27:04and whatnot where they have hit objects that have gone in front of
- 27:07them because they haven't seen them.
- 27:08So it's not out of the realm that this is possible.
- 27:11But then on the other side of the camp, you have all the Tesla people.
- 27:14There's been reports of people literally putting their own children in front
- 27:18of the car and letting it stop.
- 27:20And I'm like, you're a psychopath because you must not love your child.
- 27:23Cause I wouldn't trust anything right now to like not run my kid over.
- 27:27Like how dumb are you?
- 27:28But anyway, that's intense.
- 27:32I was not expecting this commercial.
- 27:34You rejoiced.
- 27:35I'm sure of it.
- 27:36I don't like that it's advertised as something that
- 27:38it's doing something it can't do.
- 27:40Oh, yeah.
- 27:40Like, just change the name.
- 27:42Oh, our fans know.
- 27:43I mean, there's a whole retrospective episode about this
- 27:47exact topic that you can review.
- 27:49But no, I am not part of the Dome Project.
- 27:52But send her some leaflets.
- 27:53She's definitely interested.
- 27:55All kidding aside, there are some other honorable mentions on this list.
- 27:58We got to tip our hat to weather tech.
- 28:00Obviously they sponsor IMSA and other racing series out there.
- 28:03So it was one of those, Oh, that's sweet moments where they talk about,
- 28:06you know, the factory and made in USA and all that kind of fun stuff.
- 28:09So great support weather tech.
- 28:10They make good stuff and they support racing.
- 28:12So.
- 28:12Awesome.
- 28:13The next one was the Uber one jingle.
- 28:15I very much enjoyed this.
- 28:17I thought it was cute, similar to the YouTube short.
- 28:20That's floating out around there about the windows theme song
- 28:23and how Microsoft got it right.
- 28:24If you've seen that it's like a Microsoft Azure type of commercial, but there
- 28:27was one other one that was pretty awesome and it goes back to one of our
- 28:32crossover episodes from season three and that's the T Mobile John Travolta.
- 28:39Musical commercial.
- 28:40Garbage.
- 28:41Hot garbage.
- 28:42I heard about this commercial like there was going to be some John Travolta thing
- 28:46and I don't know why I had it in my head from what I misheard that it was going
- 28:50to be Saturday Night Fever and I was totally confused when this commercial
- 28:54was going on because I'm like, what?
- 28:55This is not Saturday Night Fever.
- 28:58What's the two dudes from Scrubs, right?
- 29:00And then Travolta shows up.
- 29:01Yeah, Donald Faison and Zach Braff.
- 29:04Because those two are in a bunch of T Mobile commercials recently together.
- 29:08Yeah.
- 29:08As neighbors in this neighborhood that they're showing.
- 29:10And then suddenly, randomly, John Travolta's here.
- 29:12I don't know why.
- 29:13Isn't he moving in and then they bust out in Greece song.
- 29:16It made me smile because it made me think of Steven Izzy and the
- 29:19review of trade and paint that we did back earlier in this season.
- 29:23So I'm not sure where his spray on hair went though.
- 29:25He was bald.
- 29:26Well, he was bald and trade and paint.
- 29:28That was a weird hat.
- 29:29He didn't have hair, like a bad toupee.
- 29:31Did he?
- 29:32Yeah.
- 29:33I'm going to pull it up.
- 29:34We're going to pull it up as part of our season three retrospective.
- 29:37You're right.
- 29:37You're right.
- 29:37You're right.
- 29:38You're right.
- 29:38There was hair.
- 29:39It's right on the cover art.
- 29:41So as we wrap out our showcase, let's talk a little bit about
- 29:44season three highlights.
- 29:46This is the first time you're dialing in to the show.
- 29:48I want to let you guys know, this is the last episode of season three officially.
- 29:53And it's.
- 29:54Episode number 82 for season three.
- 29:57That's not counting all the bonus material that went out on Patreon
- 30:01that won't come out way later, maybe in season four at some point.
- 30:04So record setting number of episodes for us, you know, more than one a week.
- 30:08For sure.
- 30:09We doubled down and tripled down some of the weeks throughout the year.
- 30:12Just to get content to you guys as fast as we could.
- 30:14And there's some really great stuff left to come.
- 30:16And I'm sure you guys have some great memories from season three as well.
- 30:19I want to start off with one that Tanya and I did together, which was
- 30:23the Zymal episode with Chuck Bennett.
- 30:25Talk about an incredible storyteller and what an epic journey his career has taken.
- 30:31Yes.
- 30:31That was definitely a very fun episode to listen to.
- 30:34The man has a wealth.
- 30:38Of knowledge and experiences, and it's interesting to have heard a story of
- 30:42like where he started in his career and his life and how he switched to
- 30:46Zymal and everything he knows about it.
- 30:48And you got to flex your technical skills too, especially the episode
- 30:51we did with Rick Lee from Evolve and other things like that.
- 30:55So you get invested in different ways in the show too.
- 30:57So it's always a lot of fun.
- 30:59I like the bonus content when he started talking about Ralph Lorenz, Bugatti
- 31:03and Einstein's car and all this kind of these other projects that he worked on.
- 31:07Those are really, really cool too.
- 31:09I mean, just fascinating guy.
- 31:10Again, to your point, wealth of information and
- 31:13again, a great storyteller.
- 31:14I was really fortunate.
- 31:15I did a one on one with Barbie the welder.
- 31:18Her life's journey is another one that is just like.
- 31:21You just sit in awe and you're like, wow, how she pulled herself up from
- 31:26her bootstraps and how she's become this noted artist in the community.
- 31:30And she is related to the motorsport and vehicle community.
- 31:34She's done work for SEMA.
- 31:35She's done things for Harley Davidson and things like that.
- 31:37So if you've missed that episode, what a great and inspiring story that
- 31:41she told about her life's journey.
- 31:43We were really fortunate this year, just by chance, we met Don Wieberg
- 31:48from GarageDom Magazine, and he introduced us to the world of auctions,
- 31:52classic cars, private collections, this whole idea that he's got that
- 31:56he calls the Garage Lifestyle.
- 31:58In general, I have to say Don's been a great addition to our team, and
- 32:01he brings some immediate comedy to every episode that he's on, especially
- 32:06the What Should I Buy episodes.
- 32:07Those are always fun.
- 32:08And that is a group of folks that have been in some of the more
- 32:11recent at a lot of color too.
- 32:13So what should I buy?
- 32:17I mean, the collector car one, I was telling everybody,
- 32:19it's pretty crazy episode.
- 32:20You're going to have a lot of fun.
- 32:21You know, Don's doing impersonations and Chris and Mark are going
- 32:25at it and there's, you know, it was great experience.
- 32:27And I know, I know Brad enjoys getting together for each one that
- 32:29we come up with, but the Italian episode, I'm telling you guys right
- 32:33now, if you haven't listened to it, All I gotta say is crack pipe and it
- 32:37literally starts from that point and it goes downhill very, very quickly.
- 32:43Absolutely insane episode.
- 32:45I mean, on the other side of that, we had some real superstars.
- 32:48We have some big names that anyone, you know, remotely tied into motor
- 32:54sports probably would recognize.
- 32:55Andy Pilgrim, Lynn St.
- 32:57James, Randy Lanier, Dennis Gage, John Davis from Motor Week, Kat DeLorean.
- 33:04Bill Warner from the Amelia Island.
- 33:06They all shared their own personal stories.
- 33:09And it's very interesting.
- 33:11And very inspirational.
- 33:12A lot of people wonder, they know these people by name.
- 33:14Well, I know so and so.
- 33:16Yeah, you've seen him on TV or, you know, John Davis.
- 33:18We've known him for 42 years.
- 33:19He's been on the air for that long.
- 33:21Dennis Gage for almost 30.
- 33:22But do you really know them?
- 33:24And when you get to hear their stories and how they became who they are and the steps
- 33:28and missteps that they made along the way, I mean, it's really, really quite amazing.
- 33:32So hopefully that shed some light for other people.
- 33:35And there's some other stories out there that they're just like that
- 33:37even more tragic in some ways.
- 33:40If you look at the.
- 33:41Epic coming of age stories of pro driver, like Andy Lee, and then of SRO driver,
- 33:46Joey Jordan, the fourth, who's related to Jim Jordan, who was also on the show.
- 33:50They take us through their life and Joey, especially he goes on this
- 33:5329, 000 mile journey from LA to the tip of South America, you know,
- 33:59looking at Antarctica in a van.
- 34:01The he bought sight unseen from Japan, just incredible wild buck wild.
- 34:06I mean, that's top gear level stuff right there.
- 34:09The journey through South America was just buck wild.
- 34:13And he did it mostly by himself, which was risky, but just amazing too.
- 34:17When you listen to everything that he went through on that trip.
- 34:20So Brad and I were super fortunate this year.
- 34:23We got to do something pretty cool, right?
- 34:25Yeah, I mean, we were on a crossover episode with Mark Green from Cars, yeah.
- 34:29We double crossed with Mark.
- 34:31He came on our show.
- 34:33We went on his show.
- 34:34I have to say the crossovers are probably some of my favorite.
- 34:36Episodes that we do.
- 34:37We had on another podcast, Kate and Nicole from two girls, one formula.
- 34:42They're bringing formula one to the masses.
- 34:45Very popular.
- 34:46Uh, I think more crossovers should be in our future.
- 34:49I think there's some of my favorite those in the what should I buys for sure.
- 34:52Our listeners might not know, but we also do a quarterly with Steven Izzy
- 34:57from everything I learned for movies where not only do they review bad
- 35:00movies, they're willing to review.
- 35:02bad car movies with us.
- 35:04I was going to say Trading Paint, our EILFM crossover with Steve and Izzy.
- 35:09Crossover episodes with them are always quite enjoyable.
- 35:11They're a fun bunch.
- 35:12If you haven't checked out their podcast episode, it's
- 35:14everything I learned from movies.
- 35:16So it's always a good time with them.
- 35:17The movie itself was kind of a bitch.
- 35:19Spoiler alert.
- 35:21Consensus of that review.
- 35:22But check it out.
- 35:23It's on Netflix.
- 35:24We look forward to getting together with them.
- 35:26Be on the lookout for more between us and everything I learned from movies.
- 35:29But we have to congratulate ourselves.
- 35:31We broke the record.
- 35:32The record was held by Chuck at Zymal for the longest episode it
- 35:37took to get recorded, but that was defeated by the guys over at
- 35:41the Pontiac Aztec owners club.
- 35:43Yes, folks, we did it.
- 35:45We said we were going to do it.
- 35:46We finally got Aztec owners on the show to talk about why they love the car.
- 35:51What's so great about it.
- 35:52And Mountain Man Dan and I actually had a lot of fun recording with Paul and John
- 35:57and that episode turned out fantastically.
- 35:59So if you haven't tuned in for that, I highly recommend it.
- 36:01That was a good episode.
- 36:02I did learn a lot.
- 36:03More than you probably ever wanted to know.
- 36:06More than I thought I needed to know.
- 36:09But I gotta say my favorite episode is the next episode because our episodes
- 36:14just keep getting better and better.
- 36:15We're getting great guests, great stories.
- 36:18Yeah, I think the next episode is always going to be our best episode.
- 36:21You know, that's a good way to put it.
- 36:22I like that.
- 36:23That's very, uh, forward thinking, you know, it's the thing that
- 36:26gets us to the next thing.
- 36:28Absolutely.
- 36:29On that note, one of the other things, as I look back over season three, which
- 36:33actually takes us into season four without giving too much away is our long standing
- 36:38partnership with the international motor racing research center.
- 36:41And now In partnership with the society of automotive historians, we're bringing
- 36:45you a new mini series every month.
- 36:48We're going to put out episodes surrounding the history of motor sports.
- 36:52These are coming from different sources, academics, X racers,
- 36:56you know, things like that.
- 36:57And it's very fascinating material.
- 36:59A lot of it.
- 36:59Older things that you were like, I always wondered about that.
- 37:02And so we're really, really fortunate to be partnering with both the
- 37:06IMRRC and the SAH to bring you that kind of content and kind of mix
- 37:09things up from our standard fair.
- 37:11So look forward to more of that.
- 37:12And a lot of other surprises as we go into season four.
- 37:16If you want to leave us feedback on any of the 82 episodes from season 3,
- 37:21or anything from prior seasons in our catalog, you can join us very easily on
- 37:26our Facebook group, or on our new Discord.
- 37:28All those links are available in the show notes, on our
- 37:30website, it's all over the place.
- 37:32We're pretty easy to find.
- 37:34So, if you Also have ideas for stories that you're interested in us
- 37:38exploring, please don't be bashful.
- 37:41If you have a great story that you want to share, come on the show really easy.
- 37:44You're just sitting down and having a conversation with friends.
- 37:47So if you enjoy what we're doing, let us know we're not fishing for compliments,
- 37:51but it's always good to hear from our fans, you know, what they're interested
- 37:54in so that we can dig a little bit deeper.
- 37:56And as always, if you really, really enjoy the show and you want to help us out,
- 38:00drop us a cup of coffee over on Patreon.
- 38:03He's talking to you, Mark Hewitt.
- 38:07That said, it's time we move on to Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche news.
- 38:12So what's on the docket this month, or should I say, who's
- 38:16no longer working there?
- 38:17Apparently their design chief got the boot.
- 38:21Oh, you're out of here.
- 38:23He designed one of your new favorite cars, as you told us about from CES.
- 38:26I don't know what they're thinking.
- 38:28Well, obviously they're thinking that the ID buzz isn't all that great.
- 38:32The buzz right now, but Tanya wants one.
- 38:35Everybody I've talked to that's seen it says the same thing.
- 38:38That's super cool.
- 38:39I want to buy one.
- 38:39It was really cool to see in person.
- 38:42I hope to see them on the road.
- 38:43Feel like Volkswagen does this every time they tease us with something.
- 38:47And then everybody goes, that's really cool.
- 38:49I will line up like it's the Apple store in 2005 for the next iPhone to buy this
- 38:55thing, and then they never produce.
- 38:57The thing that we want.
- 38:58Then we get the next Passat that looks like it was made from
- 39:01cardboard and ex rental cars.
- 39:03Exactly, because the headline of this article from Haggerty is Volkswagen
- 39:08design chief ousted over retro designs replaced by Bentley design lead.
- 39:13So he was fired because he's trying to do retro redesigns?
- 39:17Hello?
- 39:18That's what sells.
- 39:19That is the thing right now.
- 39:21That's what a lot of us now who maybe are in a better financial position to buy
- 39:25another car or something kind of want, because you're going back to stuff that
- 39:29we wanted to obtain in the first place, in the first place when we were first
- 39:34starting to drive, but it was like, Oh, you can't because they're on obtainium
- 39:37or they're going to be, you know, piles and rust buckets and pieces of crap
- 39:40that you guys think a lot of money into.
- 39:42And it's like, now I could have like this kind of modern day,
- 39:44all the bells and whistles retro.
- 39:46feel to it, but we're going to get rid of that.
- 39:48Cause again, I'm saying, how dumb are you?
- 39:52The beetle again, which is like every time it's just a retro of itself, I guess.
- 39:57I don't know, but like an electric beetle.
- 40:00Oh my God.
- 40:01How easy is this?
- 40:04We're going to replace that with the guy that brought you the Bentayga.
- 40:08A stupid car with a stupid name.
- 40:10And a stupid design.
- 40:12Right?
- 40:12How could you ruin a Q7?
- 40:15I mean, it's like Looks terrible.
- 40:16I feel like there's a space for the retro stuff.
- 40:19It doesn't all need to be vanilla that they all just look like passats.
- 40:25Even Toyota is taking a step away from that.
- 40:28The new Prius is actually starting to look like a normal car.
- 40:31Then they have the crown and some other EVs and things like that.
- 40:34It's like if Toyota is making them look more normal.
- 40:36Well, I know that's a stretch to say, look more normal.
- 40:40I'm not sure some of those design lines are all that new.
- 40:43Great, but they are definitely differentiating, like that crown
- 40:47did not look like a Corolla.
- 40:49Definitely not.
- 40:50You know, even them, they've kind of gotten into like the Camry and Corolla.
- 40:52It's like until it passes you on the road, you're not sure which one it
- 40:55is sometimes from like the front end.
- 40:57We had that period in Volkswagen too, where the Passat and the Jetta and the
- 41:00Golf, they all just looked the same.
- 41:02I believe it was the Mark V period.
- 41:05And the Mark IV period.
- 41:06No, the Jetta was square in the front.
- 41:08Yeah.
- 41:09The Jetta looked nothing like the Golf.
- 41:10Although you could interchange all the parts.
- 41:12They look nothing like each other.
- 41:13It is a sad day in Volkswagen history because this month
- 41:17signifies the end of an era.
- 41:20As Volkswagen moves deeper into electrification, that
- 41:23means there is no more room for motors like the venerable VR6.
- 41:29My heart is broken, let me tell you.
- 41:31Did you know that the VR6 has now officially been around for 30 years?
- 41:34Started in the early days as a lowly 12 liter and now exits with
- 41:40over 300 horsepower out of 3.
- 41:426 liters naturally aspirated.
- 41:43A hell of an engine, a hell of a sounding engine.
- 41:46It's been in just about everything.
- 41:48When you look at the article that we're talking about here, that was put
- 41:51together by the drive, it's astounding.
- 41:54The number of cars that they put the VR six in some of them
- 41:57carrying badges, like Horsha.
- 42:00So you think, Oh, I got this mighty six cylinder in here.
- 42:02And it's actually a VR six in your Cayenne or whatever it is.
- 42:06The VR six great engine, sad to see it go.
- 42:08I understand why they're sunsetting it, but maybe in the future, who knows?
- 42:13Maybe the VR six will come back.
- 42:14It is a engineering Marvel in the fact that you can put an engine
- 42:18that big in such a tight space.
- 42:21I'm just glad to have been able to nab one.
- 42:23Oh, the price of all VR six is just went through the roof.
- 42:27Now they're 2 Bob.
- 42:2852 I got 50 well, we talked about this before and I feel like we're in the
- 42:38middle of this weird grateful dead Rolling Stones unending farewell tour.
- 42:44Here we go.
- 42:45Lamborghini.
- 42:46Once again, we have another car.
- 42:49It is going to be the ultimate final car with a V12.
- 42:53It was supposed to be some other Aventador, this,
- 42:55that, and the other thing.
- 42:56I can't even keep them all straight anymore.
- 42:58And now we have Invincible and Autentica.
- 43:02Yes.
- 43:03And I'm like, no one cares.
- 43:06And I don't like the way it looks.
- 43:08How is this different than a Huracan?
- 43:10I feel like we're back to the 80s where they only make one car for
- 43:1420 years at a time and then, you know, the next one will come out.
- 43:17How many years has it been since Jeremy Clarkson did that vignette?
- 43:21One, the Aston Martin that he drove, where he said, this is the end of
- 43:24an era, the end of the big V12.
- 43:27Yeah.
- 43:27I mean, like I said, this feels like a farewell tour.
- 43:30That's never going to end.
- 43:31Everybody keeps talking about the last of the V12s and all this kind
- 43:34of stuff, especially the Lamborghini.
- 43:35Here we are all over again.
- 43:38And it's never going to end because people keep buying them.
- 43:40Yeah, exactly.
- 43:41They keep trying to find ways to sell them.
- 43:43And offset their carbon credits and no better way to stir up buzz and get people
- 43:48interested than to say, this is it.
- 43:50This is the end.
- 43:51This is the last one we're going to make until the next one we make.
- 43:53Then that's going to be the last one we're ever going to make.
- 43:56Yeah.
- 43:56It's, it's a terrible sales paradigm there.
- 43:59I don't care about this car.
- 44:01All I care about from Lamborghini right now, and usually I don't
- 44:04resonate with his designs is the Magnus Walker redesigned Kuntosh.
- 44:10It looks so good.
- 44:11He put out another rendering the other day with a Marlboro livery on it from
- 44:15like the old school formula one days, not the Marlboro F1, which was, you
- 44:20know, Senna has anything to do with Lamborghini, but he looked good.
- 44:26So I mean, whatever Lambo you do you.
- 44:29That being said, it's time for some news from lower Saxony.
- 44:32Why?
- 44:33Why not?
- 44:34I don't care about either of these brands.
- 44:36Let's move on.
- 44:37Wow.
- 44:38Well, which is really sad because I used to love Mercedes.
- 44:41Some of our listeners might still care.
- 44:44I mean, I care a little bit.
- 44:45Does it have two doors?
- 44:47And a swooping rear end.
- 44:48I mean, then you have my attention, Mercedes.
- 44:50Or is it a wagon?
- 44:52What?
- 44:52Yes.
- 44:52Mercedes is good as those two things.
- 44:54The SLS GT model series there, the coupe and the wagons a hundred percent.
- 44:59Yeah.
- 45:00Well, anyway, the latest Mercedes news, aside from whatever their latest
- 45:04model is going to be EQ, this, that, and the other, I think they're even
- 45:07actually changing their platform names and dropping that whole.
- 45:10eqs thing.
- 45:12I'm not sure what they're going with because it's dumb.
- 45:15I mean, it was weird, but it's fine.
- 45:19Their cars are getting more techie.
- 45:21Essentially, of course they have to, to compete against the Teslas of the world.
- 45:25And also probably to work out all their subscription models that
- 45:28we've talked about in the past.
- 45:30That's not what this is about.
- 45:32You know, this is about higher computing power in the electronics.
- 45:36I think they've already been partnered with NVIDIA for a while, but the latest
- 45:40partnership that was announced, which isn't all that new for this entity
- 45:45because they've already partnered, I think, with the likes of Ford and others.
- 45:49Google is coming to a Mercedes near you.
- 45:53No.
- 45:54Wop, wop, wop.
- 45:55Specifically, it's their navigation that they want to embed
- 45:58in, in the navigation system.
- 46:00So Google Maps for you.
- 46:02Because Audi and BMW have the lock with Garmin.
- 46:05So we got to go with somebody else, right?
- 46:07I mean, that's how that works.
- 46:08I mean, I trust my Google overlord, so fine.
- 46:12No, thank you.
- 46:13It never driven me into a lake.
- 46:15So, although I did hear a report of apparently some dude's driveway got
- 46:21labeled as a road and people are legit turning on it like navigation systems.
- 46:27Must've been in Florida.
- 46:30That's awesome.
- 46:30And then there's some news from BMW.
- 46:32Which might be some good news.
- 46:35They're already talking about their 2024 models, specifically the new X5M and X6M.
- 46:41And they're kind of expanding their hybrid models a little bit, because
- 46:46right now they only have like four.
- 46:47So they're going to add the hybrids to these as well.
- 46:50So that's kind of exciting.
- 46:50That's good.
- 46:51Hybrid compromise between gasoline and being full electric.
- 46:54But I think the more interesting thing is the facelift or rather
- 46:57nose job that these two have gotten.
- 47:01Because the grills are not as monstrous, so they've toned them down a little bit.
- 47:06They're still pretty heinous.
- 47:07I think the other ductwork that's going on in the lower part of the
- 47:12bumper now is distracting, maybe?
- 47:14Have you seen the guy that mounted, like, the X7?
- 47:19Grills to an E36.
- 47:21He redid the whole front end.
- 47:23It looks ridiculous.
- 47:24Let me guess.
- 47:24It's taller than the height.
- 47:26No, it's literally the whole height of the front end to the bottom of the balance.
- 47:30It looks insane.
- 47:33I got to give him props for one thing.
- 47:35Massive cooling.
- 47:36There is no excuse for getting air into that radiator at that point.
- 47:40Well, you know what guys here we are closing out season three.
- 47:43We have to just bask in the awesomeness.
- 47:46of this next segment, complete silence from Stellantis.
- 47:53Let's take a moment.
- 47:55I mean, that's not true.
- 47:56Not necessarily.
- 47:57We had the electric boogie woogie.
- 47:59That doesn't count.
- 48:01We had the premature electrification.
- 48:03Doesn't count.
- 48:04No, it does count.
- 48:06You know what the recent news is though?
- 48:08Their stock price has gone up and they've had record profits most recently.
- 48:13So that is actually the latest.
- 48:15So they're doing quite well.
- 48:16Well, we can shift to what's left of our domestic news,
- 48:19brought to us by AmericanMuscle.
- 48:21com, your source for OEM performance parts for your Mopar,
- 48:26Ford, or Chevrolet product.
- 48:28Did you guys know that a Camaro is less expensive to lease right now
- 48:34than one of Tanya's least favorite cars on the face of the earth?
- 48:38The Malibu.
- 48:39Would you do it?
- 48:40If my choice is anything with a Camaro or Malibu, Camaro.
- 48:46Are you sure?
- 48:47I mean, if my choice is anything other than Impala versus Malibu,
- 48:51it's going to be anything.
- 48:56Brad, would you lease a Camaro?
- 48:57I'm not really into leasing period, but.
- 49:01To Tonya's point, anything is greater than a Malibu.
- 49:04I would lease a Camaro versus renting a Malibu.
- 49:08But when I read between the lines, what this says to me is
- 49:13the Camaro is not doing well.
- 49:15Don't they get rid of it?
- 49:16Yeah.
- 49:16Isn't this the last year?
- 49:17Ding, ding, ding to try to get them out the door.
- 49:20Now we have to lease them because we can't unload them quick enough.
- 49:24And also like we saw the DC auto show, they were really touting the
- 49:27Camaro convertible, which seemed.
- 49:29Not necessarily a first for that body style, but it just seemed like we hadn't
- 49:33seen the Camaro convertible in a while.
- 49:35And the same is true of the challenger, right?
- 49:36Dodge is putting out a convertible now in the last set of the production run, which
- 49:41sort of boggles my mind because it costs extra to get that through safety and the
- 49:47tooling for the convertible and all the extra stuff they had to come up with.
- 49:49And I'm like, this is craziness.
- 49:51So what I lease Camaro, why wouldn't lease anything?
- 49:56I'm with you, Brad.
- 49:56I mean that reasons and seasons for doing that.
- 49:59Right?
- 49:59But if that was my only choice, maybe just maybe is walking an option?
- 50:07walking is always an option.
- 50:08I mean, it seems to be the option at Ford.
- 50:11'cause they just reported $2 billion.
- 50:13That's billion with a B.
- 50:16Like the show with Paul Giamatti.
- 50:18Billion dollar loss.
- 50:21Because chips.
- 50:22That's not a good thing.
- 50:23I did pass a lightning on the road today, but they do exist in the wild.
- 50:28Although I was wondering if something was wrong with it.
- 50:30Cause I swear it had like his hind legs were up.
- 50:33I was like, what is this thing doing?
- 50:36It was raked.
- 50:38My wife passed a Rivian today and she texted me and she goes, what is a Rivian?
- 50:42And then that led to an explanation, which ended with her going, huh.
- 50:46That should have led to a question.
- 50:48Why do you not listen to the show?
- 50:51Season three is full of Rivian.
- 50:52Full of Rivian.
- 50:53It's the Rivian season.
- 50:54Because Chips, like we've been talking about for over a year now,
- 50:58there's still supply chain issues.
- 51:00There's still this and that.
- 51:01But the Mach E, as cool as it can be, despite the name, it is a pretty cool car.
- 51:08Prices!
- 51:09Are the problem 50, 000 for an entry level vehicle is a hard
- 51:14pill to swallow for most people.
- 51:16So I can understand why sales are down.
- 51:19And then if you're not in the economy car market, you're interested in
- 51:22buying the latest F one 50, you know, not even talking about the lightning.
- 51:26I mean, these trucks are out of control.
- 51:28Who's got 70, to spend on these trucks.
- 51:32You can't think of it like that though.
- 51:33You got to think of it more like who's got 1, 200 to spend on it a month or
- 51:381, 500 a month, because you can get the financing for any of that stuff.
- 51:42Well, that's true.
- 51:43I mean, we got a letter in the mail, even today where Chrysler was
- 51:46like, if you trade in your car for a brand new one, your new payment
- 51:50is only 121 more than the last one.
- 51:53And I'm like, are you out of your freaking mind?
- 51:55It's already bad enough as it is.
- 51:58I do like the way that the article starts out by saying that
- 52:01General Motors and Tesla both recorded record profits in 2022.
- 52:06Well, Tesla's been reporting record profits for years now, and I still
- 52:11don't understand how that math works, except for the carbon credit part that
- 52:14we've already covered several times.
- 52:15Right, right, right.
- 52:16Chevy's on the up.
- 52:17Maybe it's the truck divisions that are really where the numbers are coming
- 52:21to play, because other than the Camaro and the Malibu, As we saw at the auto
- 52:25show, they don't have anything, right?
- 52:28So they're not selling cars, the Corvette.
- 52:30I mean, the Corvettes are 30 to 40, 000 more than they used to be.
- 52:35So let's talk about that for a second.
- 52:37I want to go back to our special DC auto show episode where we talked
- 52:41about this and we speculated about even last month, the Corvette
- 52:45SUV in the four So here we go.
- 52:47Cadillac Blackwing becomes the Corvette sedan.
- 52:50And the blazer SS becomes a Corvette SUV.
- 52:54Although you guys saw the latest spy pictures that lifted Corvette SUV thing.
- 53:01And I was, it was a rendering.
- 53:02It wasn't, yeah, whatever.
- 53:04It wasn't a real car, but still I was just like, it's still a blazer with
- 53:09the Corvette nose and tail on it.
- 53:11What'd he do?
- 53:12It looks like a bowler Bobcat or whatever.
- 53:14The exact, exactly, exactly.
- 53:16Beat across.
- 53:18In reality, what General Motors is going to do is rebadge those other two
- 53:22cars, the blazer SS and the black wing.
- 53:25And those will have Corvette badges and a Jake on the side and the whole nine yards.
- 53:28And that's the end of that.
- 53:29Fine, whatever.
- 53:30But overall, I think the car market is just down.
- 53:34We're in a weird transition period.
- 53:36New cars are what they are.
- 53:38Like Tanya said, the design language right now, when we look back 20 years from now,
- 53:42I don't know what we're going to think.
- 53:44Well, the cost of everything's up.
- 53:45You shouldn't be out buying a car for the sake of buying a car unless
- 53:48you absolutely have to because your current car does no longer
- 53:52function or it's irreparable, right?
- 53:54Like, to just willy nilly be like, I feel like a new car today.
- 53:58Sunny.
- 53:58Hey man, that was the 2000s when the stock market was strong.
- 54:02Those days are gone.
- 54:03That is not the days right now.
- 54:05So these EVs cost significantly more than a Kia, Toyota Corolla.
- 54:11And like, what are you getting for that?
- 54:13Fool to say you have an electric vehicle.
- 54:16If you're going out to buy a car just for For no reason, but I'm going to
- 54:21just replace my car that still runs that I paid for blah, blah, blah.
- 54:23I don't know that you're ever going to break back even spending 80, 000.
- 54:28I don't care what the cost of the electric ferries is to fill
- 54:31the pixie dust in your car.
- 54:33That's a huge chunk of money to break back even on.
- 54:37The price of gasoline has to go astronomical.
- 54:41Well, the price of electricity has also like basically doubled
- 54:45because of everybody, you know, consuming more electricity and
- 54:49it costs more to generate more.
- 54:50So it's a lose lose situation the way I look at it, you know, without
- 54:54getting into all the details, it's like, is it cheaper to produce fuel
- 54:58than it is to produce electricity?
- 55:00But then obviously there's the, you know, the environmental impact of all that.
- 55:03I mean, it's just, it's craziness.
- 55:05I still hold true.
- 55:07And I've said it throughout the course of this season, hybrid is the way to go.
- 55:11Hopefully we'll see more of that as we go along, you know, maybe the
- 55:14tides will turn synthetic fuels.
- 55:16You know, we talked about it earlier this season with Porsche,
- 55:19you know, things like that.
- 55:19So, you know, the sky is still the limit from a technology perspective, but what
- 55:23we're still missing is standardization.
- 55:26We don't have that model T of EVs and maybe.
- 55:30Maybe Ford will come up with that car.
- 55:32You know, they can regain that title, but who knows?
- 55:35They better want to stay in business.
- 55:38They better you need a mixed bag.
- 55:39They say, if you're doing your financial investments, it's good to diversify.
- 55:43Right.
- 55:43Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
- 55:44Well, first of all, my portfolio, why we all have to.
- 55:48It's either light switch, gasoline, diesel, or electric, one or
- 55:52the other, nothing in between.
- 55:53Well, it depends on different strokes for different folks.
- 55:57There's times if you can afford an 80, 000 EV and you live in the city and
- 56:01you go three mile commute or barely use your car, that might make perfect sense.
- 56:04And you have charging stations everywhere.
- 56:06If you're out in rural America and you're driving 70 miles to go to
- 56:10work, it probably doesn't make sense, but a hybrid or a traditional ICE.
- 56:15We'll see how this all plays out.
- 56:17Maybe they, the powers that be have it right and there
- 56:20is only one to rule them all.
- 56:22I don't think so.
- 56:23I don't think so either.
- 56:24There was another article that came across my desk that made
- 56:27me pose the question yet again.
- 56:29How is this still a thing?
- 56:31Honda?
- 56:32Is still dealing with Takata airbag recalls, and these aren't on the old cars.
- 56:38These are a newer cars.
- 56:39How have they not nip this in the bud yet?
- 56:42It feels like this has been going on for forever.
- 56:45The problem is, so if this was GM, they wouldn't have this problem
- 56:49because their cars don't run that long.
- 56:50But this is Honda, where they made the mistake of making a vehicle that
- 56:55can run for longer than 20 years.
- 56:57So now the vehicles are outliving the useful life of their components,
- 57:02AKA the, uh, the death airbags, the mortars, the claymores.
- 57:08Yeah.
- 57:08The claymore mines.
- 57:09Yes.
- 57:10What you said reminds me a hundred percent of that meme that was floating
- 57:13around about all the Camry owners from like 1996, how Toyota was recalling
- 57:18them because they'd been on the road for too long by something else.
- 57:22They're unstoppable.
- 57:23And to your point, they're just so under stress.
- 57:26Not necessarily that they're well built, it's that they're
- 57:29under stressed, those cars are.
- 57:30And so they just last forever.
- 57:32But there's the neglect side of that, right?
- 57:35They run forever.
- 57:36Nobody takes care of them.
- 57:38You don't have to.
- 57:38Yeah, because you don't have to.
- 57:39It's like a lawnmower.
- 57:40As long as it starts, it cuts your grass.
- 57:41You even sharpen the blade.
- 57:43I mean, what the hell's wrong with you?
- 57:44So that's a waste of time.
- 57:45The grass is cut.
- 57:47In this instance, I mean, this Takata thing is just, Man, but they issued a
- 57:51do not drive warning to 8, 200 owners.
- 57:54I mean, that's pretty severe.
- 57:55Now that seems to be the growing trend with recalls these days.
- 57:58Everything is do not drive.
- 58:00Park it in a target parking lot and run away.
- 58:02Throw a Molotov in the window and just bolt.
- 58:05No, just light a candle.
- 58:07Yeah.
- 58:07Like that Florida man.
- 58:08Whatever.
- 58:10Speaking of how is this still a thing?
- 58:12We're going to talk about this freaking Hyundai again, for like
- 58:16the sixth or seventh month in a row.
- 58:18The N 74 concept, they are playing the hokey pokey one minute.
- 58:23It's in one minute.
- 58:24It's out.
- 58:25It's a rolling lab.
- 58:26No, it's not.
- 58:27It's a concept, you know, it isn't here.
- 58:29We are.
- 58:30Again, well, they didn't say they're going to make it.
- 58:33They just said that they're not possibly going to put a price tag on it.
- 58:39They've estimated what they think this hydrogen hybrid electric,
- 58:44whatever this thing is, nearly had an.
- 58:46And your ISM, when I saw the price tag and it will not be affordable by anybody.
- 58:52Yeah.
- 58:52What, what they did is they threw out an FU number.
- 58:55So they've been listening to critics.
- 58:56The critics have been saying, Oh, you got to make it.
- 58:59You got to make it.
- 58:59You got to make it.
- 59:00And they're like, all right, all right.
- 59:01We're going to make it.
- 59:02And if we make it.
- 59:03This is the cost you MFers want this car.
- 59:06This is what it's going to cost you.
- 59:08You know what?
- 59:08This might be a bold strategy cotton.
- 59:11Cause I bet there's going to be some rich people that are like, hell yeah.
- 59:14Sign me up.
- 59:15We're in car pre order.
- 59:16And then, and then they should just be like, hell yeah,
- 59:18here, here's three of them.
- 59:21And then it'll depreciate faster than a Veloster.
- 59:23So the rest of us can afford one.
- 59:25Yeah.
- 59:25So, so what they're doing is they're doing the Tesla model
- 59:28where they take on what's called.
- 59:30All these deposits.
- 59:32And then they're like, then we'll produce a car for you in five years.
- 59:36You can have it in five years.
- 59:38150 G's is a big pill to swallow for anything, but I think it's even
- 59:42harder to swallow on a Hyundai.
- 59:45That would be the most expensive Hyundai.
- 59:47Ever.
- 59:47All they have to do is just take the body and put it on like a Genesis
- 59:52Coop, a Genesis or something.
- 59:54It's built on top of a stinger.
- 59:56The stinger's on its way out.
- 59:58Who cares?
- 59:59Put that body on a stinger and people will buy it.
- 1:00:02Okay.
- 1:00:02It doesn't need to have NASA propulsion in it.
- 1:00:05No, it doesn't.
- 1:00:06It's like Mr.
- 1:00:06Fusion in that thing, right?
- 1:00:07So, uh, factory five, stop making replica cobra registers and
- 1:00:13start making replica in 75 cars.
- 1:00:16If it was 50 G's, not 150 G's, if it was 50 grand.
- 1:00:22And out now with the Nissan, which we're not sure if that's out yet either.
- 1:00:26And the Supra and everything else, I would really consider it because it is so
- 1:00:31cool because everything's so expensive, that 50 grand price point, you can
- 1:00:37kind of make it work for a sports car.
- 1:00:39If you're dedicated and you're an enthusiast, but 150, 000, you're
- 1:00:43in Porsche territory at that point, or low end Ferrari territory.
- 1:00:46I mean, you better have a killer car.
- 1:00:49It can't be all looks.
- 1:00:50That's all I'm saying that it looks damn good.
- 1:00:54Well, what about other.
- 1:00:55Evie's and concepts, Tanya, our friends at Volvo Polestar.
- 1:01:00Oh, okay.
- 1:01:01I was confused.
- 1:01:02Yes.
- 1:01:03Well, you know, Polestar, Volvo, technically.
- 1:01:05Yeah.
- 1:01:06So Polestar is unveiling its next model for next year, the Polestar two,
- 1:01:11and they're going to be adding even more power and 300 miles of range.
- 1:01:16And these things are cool.
- 1:01:18Are they though?
- 1:01:19I think so.
- 1:01:20Are they?
- 1:01:20Polestar one.
- 1:01:22Whoa.
- 1:01:22Eat you up.
- 1:01:24That was the one that was at the DC Auto Show, and its numbers are just
- 1:01:28like ridiculous in terms of performance.
- 1:01:31But it still looks like an S 60 though, right.
- 1:01:34Which I don't have a problem with.
- 1:01:36I don't have a problem with that.
- 1:01:37I don't have a problem.
- 1:01:37It's, it's always the price tag.
- 1:01:39It's always the price tag.
- 1:01:40Well, and that's the problem.
- 1:01:41Like I can't afford a Polestar.
- 1:01:43You can't afford the Polestar 1.
- 1:01:46000.
- 1:01:47I think it's up there in that neighborhood.
- 1:01:49Yeah, 150, 000 to 180, 000, I think you were saying.
- 1:01:51I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 1:01:53But I have seen more regular, let's call them entry model Polestars on
- 1:01:57the road lately, and they kind of catch me by surprise because at first
- 1:02:00you're like, Ah, this is a Volvo.
- 1:02:01And then you see, That symbol right on the back.
- 1:02:04And you're like, that's, that's a pole star.
- 1:02:06And at night they're more obvious because of the way the lights are shaped.
- 1:02:09They're kind of, they really do stick out, which is kind of cool.
- 1:02:12They're not offensive looking because they do hark back to
- 1:02:17the Volvo that they're based on.
- 1:02:18But again, it's like, uh, you know, maybe, maybe we could just got to drive one.
- 1:02:22The problem is where do you go to go check one of these cars out?
- 1:02:25I don't know.
- 1:02:26I've never looked into it.
- 1:02:27I.
- 1:02:28Were they the ones that basically like you do everything and they
- 1:02:31like show up with the car for you?
- 1:02:33I think so.
- 1:02:33And that's a growing trend now.
- 1:02:35And actually segues into something I wanted to talk about, which is
- 1:02:37another article I read the other day.
- 1:02:39I believe it was from a grassroots motorsports or one of them.
- 1:02:42And they were talking about dealerships being a thing in the past.
- 1:02:46Why do you want to go to the dealership spend all day when you could just
- 1:02:49fill out the forms online, you can get the credit pre applications now
- 1:02:52for just about everything online.
- 1:02:55And you could order the card the way you want it.
- 1:02:57So then the dealerships just become service centers, which people
- 1:03:01choose not to go to, like we talked about with the Takata airbags.
- 1:03:04You have your choice.
- 1:03:05Do you want to take it there to get service?
- 1:03:07You want to go somewhere else, whatever.
- 1:03:08But I am personally done with dealing with dealerships and you
- 1:03:12know, no offense to the sales guys, everybody's got to make a living.
- 1:03:14I've said it before.
- 1:03:15I want what I want.
- 1:03:17And it would just be nice to use the configurator online.
- 1:03:20I want those wheels.
- 1:03:22I want that color.
- 1:03:23I want that trim.
- 1:03:25Send it.
- 1:03:26And it's not necessarily here.
- 1:03:27Run my credit card like it was in the nineties.
- 1:03:29You know, people are putting houses on their credit cards because
- 1:03:31it's getting the points and stuff.
- 1:03:33It's not that kind of thing, but all the loan application
- 1:03:36stuff can be done online now.
- 1:03:37I don't get it.
- 1:03:38So if Polestar is in fact doing it that way, I don't have a problem with it.
- 1:03:44Now I had a wha, wha.
- 1:03:47moment when I saw this next one.
- 1:03:49Why?
- 1:03:49What do you mean?
- 1:03:50Who's Lightyear?
- 1:03:51Why do I care?
- 1:03:52And they're suddenly out of business.
- 1:03:53What?
- 1:03:54We've talked about them before on a previous episode.
- 1:03:56Who?
- 1:03:57Well Buzz?
- 1:03:58Lightyear?
- 1:03:59I mean, they're like a Dutch company that was trying to do the
- 1:04:02whole solar panel on the whole top of the car and all that stuff.
- 1:04:05And it was going to be the solar powered EV.
- 1:04:08How did that work out for them again?
- 1:04:09Apparently not very well, because I would imagine their cost of manufacture
- 1:04:14was way too high and unsustainable.
- 1:04:16Ah, so the bigger question becomes who will absorb their technology, their
- 1:04:22patents and all the factory that they were using and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:04:25So that's the thing I want to pay attention to.
- 1:04:28It's not necessarily the fact that light year is going out of business or.
- 1:04:31Well, and there's all the whole, that whole bankruptcy whole scene is all
- 1:04:34bright just because they're bankrupt.
- 1:04:35Doesn't mean the company closes and who knows how they restructure.
- 1:04:39And then suddenly they're still there.
- 1:04:41And I don't know, cause they talk about building cheaper solar EVs than like this
- 1:04:47Buick size, like limousine length, late year one, it looked like, so I don't know.
- 1:04:52I have no idea.
- 1:04:53Well, since you brought up restructuring and bankruptcy, and we're not sure how
- 1:04:56it all works, that leads us to Lotus.
- 1:04:59If you look into the history of one of Britain's finest engineering companies
- 1:05:04with a long racing pedigree, I mean, all jokes aside about Lotus, there's
- 1:05:07some interesting stuff in their past, but now they made the announcement.
- 1:05:12That they're going to move to EVs as well, because I was sort of wondering
- 1:05:16what was going to happen to Lotus.
- 1:05:17Lotus has always sort of said, I kind of don't care what everybody else is doing.
- 1:05:21We're going to build sports cars or race cars or whatever.
- 1:05:23They've always been focused really on the enthusiasts and motor sports.
- 1:05:26And here they come with the Electra.
- 1:05:30Because everything has to start with E at Lotus for some weird reason.
- 1:05:33It used to be numbers, you know, type this, you know, Lotus 7
- 1:05:36and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:05:37Now we have all E names since, you know, the Eclat and the early
- 1:05:40cars and the Esprit and all that.
- 1:05:42So the Elettra.
- 1:05:43It's Elettra.
- 1:05:43Boogie woogie.
- 1:05:45Boogie woogie.
- 1:05:46I mean, it's built in China.
- 1:05:47It's ugly.
- 1:05:48Yeah, that's all I got to say.
- 1:05:50It looks like a really bad Urus.
- 1:05:51I was going to say it looks like a Urus and that's not a good thing.
- 1:05:54No, it doesn't look like a Lotus.
- 1:05:57It just.
- 1:05:57Doesn't.
- 1:05:58It's probably a Geely or whatever they're called underneath.
- 1:06:02It is by the Geely group.
- 1:06:03Geely bought Lotus six years ago.
- 1:06:06Wow.
- 1:06:06Has it been that long?
- 1:06:08This thing is awful.
- 1:06:09If somebody out there buys one, I'd be curious to take a
- 1:06:11ride in it, but not so much.
- 1:06:15So speaking of other random EVs and going back to our Dawn project and self driving,
- 1:06:23maybe there'll be a PSA on this too.
- 1:06:25But however, Amazon and it's been going on for several years that they've
- 1:06:29been trying to do small little robo taxis, full self driving yada yada,
- 1:06:33apparently in whichever this Sub branch of Amazon, Zoox, that it's called.
- 1:06:39It's developing these driverless taxis for use on the road.
- 1:06:42They have done it.
- 1:06:44Done what?
- 1:06:44They're on the road.
- 1:06:46These things don't have steering wheels, no controls, and they'll drive you around.
- 1:06:51Right now they're only driving you around like a mile back and forth on campus.
- 1:06:57Are they utilizing a tunnel under the road?
- 1:06:59No, I don't think so.
- 1:07:01It's kind of like a moment where it's like, Oh, cool.
- 1:07:04We did this, but it's like, well, they're getting closer.
- 1:07:07Maybe they really just have like a beta test here with humans.
- 1:07:14Johnny cab, Johnny cab.
- 1:07:16And if it.
- 1:07:17If it works anything like their streaming service, I'm not convinced.
- 1:07:20I mean, that's where the future is going.
- 1:07:22So, you know, not my future.
- 1:07:24The real question is, are they able to make the technology work?
- 1:07:27Cause if they could beat, you know, who, and actually have something
- 1:07:30that works reliably, it doesn't mow down small children or animals.
- 1:07:34There's other variables at play at the other manufacturer.
- 1:07:37Cause there's a whole tailspin going on there too, which we'll
- 1:07:40cover here in a little bit.
- 1:07:41Well, it's an interesting, like these, like a little robo taxi.
- 1:07:44I don't know, like how big this thing is.
- 1:07:47Cause there's been some other ones that like Pizza Hut or Domino's or like
- 1:07:50delivery services have been trying.
- 1:07:52You've got the canoe and the postal service is using Oshkosh, my gosh.
- 1:07:56So canoe is still coming out.
- 1:07:58They haven't gone under, unlike some of the other ones.
- 1:08:00You see, there's a place for everything.
- 1:08:02If you're at like a large.
- 1:08:03Distribution center, maybe like an Amazon or any other big manufacturing
- 1:08:07plant that would require people to like move from one end to the other.
- 1:08:11At any point, if you had like this little robo taxi, one, two seater, three seater,
- 1:08:15I mean, that's a pretty efficient means of transporting your people around without
- 1:08:19having a lot of downtime and waste.
- 1:08:21I don't know if it would work in the city streets of New York City yet, which is.
- 1:08:26Likely the end goal for people, but there could be applications
- 1:08:29where it could make sense.
- 1:08:31I sometimes think moving sidewalks in New York City would
- 1:08:34be faster than taking a cab.
- 1:08:36Well, there is a company that has moonwalkers, I think they're
- 1:08:39called, something like that.
- 1:08:40It's like these bizarre roller skate bases that you step into
- 1:08:44and it speeds up your walking.
- 1:08:46Why can't we just have the hoverboards like they promised
- 1:08:49us in Back to the Future?
- 1:08:50Get this.
- 1:08:51It senses like your body motion.
- 1:08:53So like, if you pull back a little bit, it like, it'll slow down.
- 1:08:56Like that's how you stop.
- 1:08:57But then I was like, how the hell do you go up like stairs
- 1:08:59or downstairs with these things?
- 1:09:01Right.
- 1:09:01You just bounce your way up.
- 1:09:03No.
- 1:09:04So what you do is when you approach the step and I forget which way
- 1:09:07is which, but you click your heel out to like lock them and then you
- 1:09:12click your heel in to unlock them.
- 1:09:13So imagine bicycles where you have clip ons.
- 1:09:18I'm just thinking, like, the number of people that are gonna, like, fall over
- 1:09:20at the top of a staircase with this.
- 1:09:24But we digress.
- 1:09:25They can't all be Crocs, that's for sure.
- 1:09:27Don't give him any ideas.
- 1:09:28Healy Crocs.
- 1:09:29It's time to move on to Brad's favorite section, Lost and Found.
- 1:09:33Mm hmm.
- 1:09:33Did you tally up how many Dodge Dart we found over the course of Season 3?
- 1:09:38That's an important statistic for our listeners.
- 1:09:40I believe it's zero, but if there is a joke in there for the longest running car,
- 1:09:46not sold, there is a 1988 Cadillac DeVille base still for sale, a gray Chevrolet.
- 1:09:53Oh my God.
- 1:09:54Somebody buy this thing, please.
- 1:09:56And report back.
- 1:09:57We would love to have you on the show.
- 1:09:58The Ford GT is still out there and then there's a brand new 2008 Scion XB.
- 1:10:05Scion is not a company anymore, but you can still buy a brand new Scion
- 1:10:11XB for 4, 800 at VW of Clarksville.
- 1:10:14You can buy a Toyota at a Volkswagen dealer.
- 1:10:16It's brilliant.
- 1:10:16And obviously the joke is that these dealers, they put so many cars
- 1:10:20on these websites, they don't pay attention, new use, whatever, so.
- 1:10:23It's definitely not a new vehicle, but also I was looking at bring a trailer.
- 1:10:27Oh, trying to see what's going on.
- 1:10:28Our favorite outrageously priced shopping place.
- 1:10:31Yes.
- 1:10:31Right now, current bid ends in 15 hours, a 37 mile 2021 McLaren Elva, which
- 1:10:39is a car I didn't even know existed.
- 1:10:42Right.
- 1:10:42Current bid is 1.
- 1:10:446 million.
- 1:10:44Ooh.
- 1:10:46I'll get two, but if that doesn't tickle your fancy also closing in 15
- 1:10:52hours, a 1993 Volkswagen Corrado SLC VR six five speed that just went up in
- 1:10:59value because no more VR sixes exist.
- 1:11:01The current bid is 7, 600.
- 1:11:04You know, if it's in really good shape, Actually not bad for a Corrado.
- 1:11:08It has to be in really good shape to be on bring a trailer.
- 1:11:11So now the disappointing part about the Corrado is, and believe me, I'm a fan.
- 1:11:15So I can throw shade and we've owned one of these cars is
- 1:11:18everything that isn't the body
- 1:11:22because it's a Mark two underneath it's a 12 LVR six gear boxes, whatever, with the
- 1:11:27stupid seat belts, very nineties interior.
- 1:11:30I mean, it is a cool car for a period.
- 1:11:33I wouldn't.
- 1:11:33Throw one away if somebody gave one to me, but you're faced with all
- 1:11:37those early 90s Volkswagen stuff.
- 1:11:40The other problem with the Corrado is it's super specific.
- 1:11:43Everything about that car is for that car.
- 1:11:45There is some interchangeability with other stuff, but whatever.
- 1:11:47The bigger point here, 7, 600.
- 1:11:50I actually feel like the values come down because Corrado's were almost untouchable
- 1:11:54at one point for less than five figures.
- 1:11:56And to see one under that low mileage and great condition, that's a steal.
- 1:12:01Grab that thing.
- 1:12:02Get your checkbook ready.
- 1:12:032004 Volkswagen R32 bidding ends in 15 hours.
- 1:12:07Current bid is 11, 000.
- 1:12:09That's really low.
- 1:12:10Well, it's, it's not stock mod and it's got a Magnaflow exhaust, the aftermarket
- 1:12:15intake, Alcantara headliner, KW variant, three coil overs, 18 inch BBS wheels,
- 1:12:21so it's got some tasteful mods done.
- 1:12:23We have a barn find in the mix too, right?
- 1:12:25For our resident car enthusiast, car flipper, Andrew Bank,
- 1:12:31have we got a car for you?
- 1:12:321967 Chevrolet Corvette, 67 custom Stingray.
- 1:12:37That is the title.
- 1:12:38No, that is not the title of this car.
- 1:12:41It literally says, quote, The Boomer special . That's what the meme says.
- 1:12:46But the Craigslist ad says 67 Chevrolet Corvette 67, custom Stingray 67.
- 1:12:5267 67.
- 1:12:54It, it has 6,700 miles, 6,700 miles on a 67 body on a 2010 chassis.
- 1:13:01This thing looks terrible.
- 1:13:02It looks disgusting.
- 1:13:03I mean, it's supposed to be a C two, but the roof line is completely wrong.
- 1:13:08The roof line is C six, right?
- 1:13:11And the worst part is.
- 1:13:12Despite the way it looks is the cost.
- 1:13:14I mean, I get it.
- 1:13:15It's modded, it's custom.
- 1:13:16It's this, it's that, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:13:18If it suits your fancy fine, but 125, 000, no low balls.
- 1:13:21I know what I have, but on the other side of that, there was a 79 Firebird
- 1:13:25Trans Am that showed up in a barn find.
- 1:13:28It only has 37 original miles on it.
- 1:13:31It's up for auction.
- 1:13:32Yep.
- 1:13:32That is a production.
- 1:13:33Beautiful car.
- 1:13:34Mountain Man Dan found for you this month.
- 1:13:36Your next race car, Brad.
- 1:13:37What's that?
- 1:13:38Danica Patrick's old Arca car.
- 1:13:40You know, if I ever get back into tracking, like I used to, maybe
- 1:13:45when the kid gets older, I could see picking up something like this.
- 1:13:48Although I wouldn't do a car.
- 1:13:49I'd probably do one of those craftsmen series pickup trucks.
- 1:13:52Yeah, those are pretty slick.
- 1:13:53Wow.
- 1:13:54This thing's sold for 5, 000.
- 1:13:56That's cheap, right?
- 1:13:57This is back in her go daddy days.
- 1:13:59Well, there's no motor.
- 1:14:00It's just a chassis.
- 1:14:01I mean, you can pick up a motor for like 200 bucks.
- 1:14:04Come on.
- 1:14:04It's just a 350 trans.
- 1:14:06Yeah.
- 1:14:06I mean, that's cheap stuff though.
- 1:14:08Still now, like we've done throughout various drive through episodes
- 1:14:12this season, we have yet another candidate for our uncool wall.
- 1:14:17I don't know.
- 1:14:21Is that actually how it came or someone just Retrofitted,
- 1:14:25uh, tarp on the back of it.
- 1:14:27No, Don Wieberg sent us this one as a candidate this month.
- 1:14:30It is a 1978 Pontiac Phoenix with the camping package.
- 1:14:35Going back to our friends in the Aztec community, it looks like the Aztec
- 1:14:40was not the first Pontiac with a add on camping package for their vehicle.
- 1:14:46But what boggles my mind is how you access this.
- 1:14:49It's considered.
- 1:14:50A hatchback lift back that this thing is like 150 feet long.
- 1:14:55It used to be a four door and they turned it into a two door hatchback.
- 1:14:59So it's 11 million feet long.
- 1:15:01The Phoenix was available as a two door coupe, a four door sedan with a three
- 1:15:05door hatchback that was available in 1978.
- 1:15:08All in the same chassis.
- 1:15:09So there you go.
- 1:15:10It's huge.
- 1:15:11So they literally just.
- 1:15:12Took the rear doors off and then put a tent on the trunk lid.
- 1:15:17This is Aztec level engineering.
- 1:15:19And the tent is secured by pulling the bungee cord into the door and
- 1:15:26shutting the door on it, apparently.
- 1:15:28I mean, how do you think the Aztec one works?
- 1:15:30It's the same stuff.
- 1:15:33It's actually not terrible.
- 1:15:35Look, it's terrible in that color.
- 1:15:38It's like a bigger version of that citation X 11 and
- 1:15:42all those cars from that era.
- 1:15:44They all sort of looked the same before we move on from lost and found.
- 1:15:49I don't know if you all saw Doug DeMuro started his own trading site, his own
- 1:15:53auction site called cars and bids.
- 1:15:55Yeah.
- 1:15:55That's been for a while now.
- 1:15:57Yeah.
- 1:15:57Well, he just got a multimillion dollar cash investment from some firm
- 1:16:02that I saw on his post on Instagram.
- 1:16:05What are we doing wrong?
- 1:16:09We're not selling cars.
- 1:16:10That's it.
- 1:16:10No, you had to have started on YouTube when you were like five years old.
- 1:16:14And then, you know, just We would be remiss.
- 1:16:19Oh, is it that time again?
- 1:16:21It is that time again.
- 1:16:22Do we have any Tesla news?
- 1:16:24Or is it just Elon Musk news?
- 1:16:26Do we have to separate now after 31 episodes?
- 1:16:29Yeah, Tesla doesn't exist anymore.
- 1:16:31It's just Elon Musk.
- 1:16:31It's just the Elon Musk circus.
- 1:16:34Twitter still sucks.
- 1:16:35There's no Cybertruck.
- 1:16:36Those are the highlights, yeah.
- 1:16:39Next.
- 1:16:40In seriousness though.
- 1:16:42Didn't use Twitter before.
- 1:16:43I'm sure as hell not going to use it now.
- 1:16:45Well, even less people are going to be using Twitter soon because now
- 1:16:48they're going to start charging for API integration, which means everybody
- 1:16:53that was, let's say, orchestrating or automating anything with Twitter dead.
- 1:16:56All that stuff's gone.
- 1:16:57Really?
- 1:16:58Yep.
- 1:16:58Oh, I hadn't heard that.
- 1:16:59Yeah.
- 1:17:00I don't know what he's going to do when he fires.
- 1:17:01Everybody keeps firing the engineers and the people doing the work.
- 1:17:05Is he Willy Wonka?
- 1:17:06Like he just comes down to the door.
- 1:17:07Fire!
- 1:17:09And out you go.
- 1:17:09I don't know, because the latest firing was like, employee mentions how
- 1:17:14the polling results say that you're unfavorable, and he's like, you're fired!
- 1:17:18Don't know if that's how it really went down, but Sounds like a Simpsons Mr.
- 1:17:22Burns thing.
- 1:17:24Oh, get it in that vein.
- 1:17:26They've literally like just announced engineering headquarters
- 1:17:30is moving from Austin.
- 1:17:31Wait, wait, hold on.
- 1:17:32Didn't pump the brakes a second.
- 1:17:34Didn't they just get there?
- 1:17:36They just displaced like tens of thousands of people.
- 1:17:40Yeah.
- 1:17:40Well, isn't, isn't it kind of expensive to move your headquarters?
- 1:17:44Not only did he just displace a bunch of people in 2021, in the middle
- 1:17:48of the pandemic, they also gave.
- 1:17:51People in Ultimatum, after they went to fully remote work, where it was
- 1:17:55like, you're going to show up in Austin in the next two days or you're fired.
- 1:18:00So there's a theme.
- 1:18:01And now they're moving the engineering headquarters back
- 1:18:04to Palo Alto, California.
- 1:18:07California.
- 1:18:07Yes, and people say this guy is a business mastermind.
- 1:18:13Tesla is going to be the company to rule them all with stuff like this.
- 1:18:17Seriously.
- 1:18:18It makes you scratch your head.
- 1:18:20I don't think the true answer of why this is happening has been revealed.
- 1:18:23Is it all part of the Well, here's the thing.
- 1:18:27One source or whatever is questioning, is it because we're moving it?
- 1:18:32So he's now closer to Twitter, but then this whole Twitter thing,
- 1:18:35he's like, I'm going to find a new CEO by the end of 2023.
- 1:18:39Like, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:18:40Like, are you really?
- 1:18:41You said that two weeks after you joined the company.
- 1:18:43Hook it over that you were going to replace yourself and you still haven't.
- 1:18:46So I don't know, like, why are you moving back and forth, back and forth?
- 1:18:50You just built this whole giga Austin corporate headquarters, I think is still
- 1:18:54going to stay there, but everyone in engineering is going to go to Palo Alto,
- 1:18:58which, cause we want to be back in the.
- 1:19:00Tech Silicon Valley, California version.
- 1:19:03Womp womp.
- 1:19:05about that.
- 1:19:05Womp womp.
- 1:19:06But maybe we'll learn more about the reasoning and the rationale on March 1st
- 1:19:12at the Tesla Investors Day, where he will unveil his part three to his master plan.
- 1:19:18Is he going to do it with like a mini version of himself next to him?
- 1:19:22Well, the way he's spending money, it's like who needs billions?
- 1:19:26When you could have millions.
- 1:19:27Who is the CEO of WeatherTech?
- 1:19:30Who is the CEO of any number of successful companies?
- 1:19:35We have no idea who these people's names are, yet their companies are
- 1:19:38still massively and wildly successful.
- 1:19:41Can he just go to Mars, please?
- 1:19:43Just hop on one of his stupid little SpaceX penis missiles and go to Mars.
- 1:19:47I'm so sick of this tool.
- 1:19:50Give me back my hundred dollars for my Cybertruck.
- 1:19:53That's what you're really bitter about.
- 1:19:55There it is.
- 1:19:56There it is.
- 1:19:56The promises, the bait, the bait and switch.
- 1:19:59All that dogecoin.
- 1:20:01At the earliest, we might see, reports are saying, the Cybertruck
- 1:20:06at the end of this year.
- 1:20:07At the earliest, but probably not.
- 1:20:11I love those headlines.
- 1:20:12Haslam will be out of business and they'll still be promising
- 1:20:16people that Cybertrucks are coming.
- 1:20:17I mean, come on.
- 1:20:19The Cybertruck is becoming the new Chinese democracy album from Guns N Roses.
- 1:20:24It's coming.
- 1:20:24It's coming.
- 1:20:25Didn't it come out like 20 years later?
- 1:20:27It did eventually come.
- 1:20:28Yeah, you're right.
- 1:20:29It did.
- 1:20:29It did.
- 1:20:30Because everyone's speculating that the production level model will unveil.
- 1:20:35And well, there's one really crappy video that someone took.
- 1:20:38Of I guess a Cybertruck running through Austin.
- 1:20:41Is it the one with the mirrors or without the mirrors?
- 1:20:43Got the mirrors on it, baby.
- 1:20:45Does it have the lasers?
- 1:20:46Big sad mirrors.
- 1:20:48And I also noticed something as this person was filming on like freaking
- 1:20:51Nokia flip phone from I don't know when.
- 1:20:54It's like the NASA videos, right?
- 1:20:56We have these high intensity.
- 1:20:59High definition cameras.
- 1:21:01And every picture of the moon is grainy as all get out.
- 1:21:04Like it was taken in 1986.
- 1:21:06I don't know what camera this was really bad.
- 1:21:09They were taken in 86.
- 1:21:11They just are just now getting back to us.
- 1:21:14But what struck me as it was like.
- 1:21:16Cybertruck was passing in front of this person, the reflections in the side
- 1:21:20panel, I was like, what kind of glare blinding in your eyes is this thing
- 1:21:27gonna do on the road on a sunny day?
- 1:21:30Were the panels straight?
- 1:21:31No.
- 1:21:32The sheet metal from Home Depot is not very straight.
- 1:21:35You gotta like really bang it out and everything to get it nice and perfect.
- 1:21:39So I'll say this, to its credit, if it's stainless, Like the
- 1:21:42DeLoreans were back in the day.
- 1:21:44It's actually not that bad in the sun.
- 1:21:46It won't completely blind you.
- 1:21:49It is very noticeable, but yeah, I don't know.
- 1:21:52The DeLoreans didn't have giant sides for the sun to reflect off of.
- 1:21:57It was very angular and kind of more, it makes sense that the DeLorean wouldn't.
- 1:22:00This thing is just a giant.
- 1:22:03And if anybody's driven through a city on a nice sunny day, all those
- 1:22:06windows and everything, you're blinded.
- 1:22:08You can't drive through the city.
- 1:22:09You're going to hit the pedestrians with your fully autonomous car
- 1:22:13or not because you can't see.
- 1:22:16And the cyber truck is the size of the empire state building.
- 1:22:19It's going to do the same thing.
- 1:22:20It is very, very, but with lasers, let me lower your expectation fully.
- 1:22:24And I haven't even gotten there yet.
- 1:22:26So they're expecting to see the latest version rolled out at
- 1:22:30the investors day, March 1st.
- 1:22:31The thoughts are there'll be several tweaks to it.
- 1:22:34Don't know yet about if a windshield wiper is getting put on there or
- 1:22:37not, or if it's lasers, but the sides will be How is that even possible?
- 1:22:44Thank you.
- 1:22:44That was my first reaction.
- 1:22:45I was like, how do you make a box more square?
- 1:22:49Cardboard.
- 1:22:49Ikea proves that every week with everything they make.
- 1:22:53So I guess it's doable.
- 1:22:55You know, it's going to have so many changes.
- 1:22:57They're going to roll it out and it's going to be a
- 1:22:59Silverado with a Tesla badge.
- 1:23:01It's going to roll out.
- 1:23:01It's going to look like an F 150 lightning.
- 1:23:04It was the, here it is.
- 1:23:05Here's the cyber truck.
- 1:23:06Thank you, Ford, for doing all the work for.
- 1:23:08You're going to have a Model Y front end, and this is going to be a pickup truck.
- 1:23:12Yeah, it's going to have that platypus front end.
- 1:23:16It's going to be duct taped on, because you can get the duct
- 1:23:19tape pretty cheap at Home Depot.
- 1:23:20Quack, quack.
- 1:23:22Buy two, get one free rolls.
- 1:23:23That's terrible.
- 1:23:24I mean, that Thoroughly lowered my expectations.
- 1:23:27Lowered expectations.
- 1:23:30We've gotten there.
- 1:23:31And you know what?
- 1:23:32I'm going to finally grind this one into the ground.
- 1:23:35Thank you.
- 1:23:36Thank you.
- 1:23:37Last month, there was all this speculation about Jeremy Clarkson's latest.
- 1:23:42Childish temper tantrum.
- 1:23:44And we said, well, it's about time that we close the chapter on this.
- 1:23:48And you know, all the excuses aside, I feel like the drama it's sort
- 1:23:52of played out similarly to the way it did on top gear, it got old.
- 1:23:56And so we had to create this thing.
- 1:23:59And then Jeremy Clarkson and team left top gear and did the grand tour
- 1:24:03and the grand tour, a bunch of drama, and we punched people in the face
- 1:24:06and then we canceled the show and we went to the long format movies and
- 1:24:09now, because the movies are sucking.
- 1:24:11We're going to create some more drama and we're finally canceled for real.
- 1:24:15This time, Amazon has said we're done.
- 1:24:17It's it it's over.
- 1:24:18We are now in the post top gear era, which whatever.
- 1:24:22I thought we were already there like 10 years ago, but did it say anything
- 1:24:25about some of the offshoots, some of the other shows, not related to top gear,
- 1:24:29like Clarkson's farm and stuff like that, because season two just came out.
- 1:24:32Yeah, but that was already filmed a while ago.
- 1:24:34And I think with his latest just idiocy, there's been threats about
- 1:24:39canceling Clarkson's farm as well.
- 1:24:41So we'll see how that goes.
- 1:24:42I mean, he's doing nothing but pissing off his neighbors.
- 1:24:44That's for sure.
- 1:24:45If you watch the show, I mean, it's entertaining enough.
- 1:24:47Well, the first season was really good, but it wasn't about.
- 1:24:50Him just making his neighbors mad.
- 1:24:52It was him actually trying to learn how to farm.
- 1:24:54I guess now that he's done that, I don't see that lasting very long, long term.
- 1:24:59not like a top of your thing.
- 1:25:01It's like, all right, cool.
- 1:25:01Two seasons, max.
- 1:25:03So season two is done a third, but you're stretching it.
- 1:25:07What's he going to do?
- 1:25:08Right.
- 1:25:08True.
- 1:25:08He's going to retire.
- 1:25:09Credit where credit's due, he's getting up there in age.
- 1:25:12They all are.
- 1:25:13It's like, fine, bow out gracefully.
- 1:25:15You could have gone out on a high note when they exited top gear.
- 1:25:19Cause I think some of that whole publicity stunt was staged to bring in
- 1:25:23a new crew and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:25:24I mean, whatever, maybe he is a megalomaniac.
- 1:25:27I don't know, but I'd like to believe maybe not maybe a little bit.
- 1:25:31There's a little bit of a human in there.
- 1:25:33I don't know.
- 1:25:34My point is.
- 1:25:35Okay, I'm just glad.
- 1:25:36I don't have to hear about it again.
- 1:25:38So who's a worse human at this point?
- 1:25:40Jeremy Clarkson or Elon Musk?
- 1:25:42Both of them are basically man children.
- 1:25:44So Jeremy Clarkson just has a big mouth and doesn't know when to
- 1:25:47shut up, but Elon Musk actually believes the shit that he says.
- 1:25:50I feel like we're watching Boiler Room every time we talk about Tesla news.
- 1:25:57We're watching Wolf of Wall Street.
- 1:26:01Moving on.
- 1:26:01This next one speaks to also why I think the days of dealerships are over with.
- 1:26:07Apparently a dealership made a woman right in front of them.
- 1:26:12That was, you know, buying a car, filling out paperwork, basically
- 1:26:15prove that she was a human.
- 1:26:16Can confirm this happened to me when I bought my Tundra.
- 1:26:19No, swear to God.
- 1:26:21They had the little electronic things.
- 1:26:23Like we have to make everybody do this.
- 1:26:25Just sign.
- 1:26:26You are not a robot.
- 1:26:28I'm right here in front of you.
- 1:26:29I am not a robot.
- 1:26:31I can't even do the robot.
- 1:26:32I am not a robot.
- 1:26:33They're just preparing us.
- 1:26:35For the future of androids or the cyber crime that will ensue when you can
- 1:26:40order your car online and somebody has your identity and your credit card and
- 1:26:44suddenly, yeah, they just bought it.
- 1:26:46150, 000 Hyundai.
- 1:26:48I mean, if that showed up and I didn't have to pay for it and I'm just kidding.
- 1:26:52Drive it around the block once or twice and then how many different
- 1:26:55screens the capture you would have to go through to buy a car on.
- 1:27:00Oh, I just realized something.
- 1:27:02What if it was like Amazon's return policy and it showed up and you
- 1:27:07said you didn't actually order this.
- 1:27:10And so they said, keep it and they refunded you the money.
- 1:27:12No, they would never do it on that.
- 1:27:14Such a big purchase.
- 1:27:15Seen weirder things happen with Amazon.
- 1:27:17And then some of the cheapest thing, you're like, got to go
- 1:27:19through hoops to return it.
- 1:27:20Another thing that I don't understand, and we know it's become sort of
- 1:27:24an epidemic in the car community.
- 1:27:26And maybe this is why we need to move to EVs, which is catalytic
- 1:27:29converters being stolen from vehicles.
- 1:27:32You know, you hear these stories about guys sliding underneath trucks,
- 1:27:35cutting them off with the sawzall.
- 1:27:37They're in and out of there and, you know, 90 seconds.
- 1:27:39And the end of their time.
- 1:27:39Turn it in catalytic converters for, you know, whatever they're
- 1:27:42worth in precious metals.
- 1:27:43But I gotta say, you gotta be pretty ballsy to steal the catalytic converter
- 1:27:48off the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile.
- 1:27:51I mean, who does that?
- 1:27:52A delinquent.
- 1:27:56Who does that?
- 1:27:57It was Vegas.
- 1:27:58And what happens in Vegas, apparently gets sold on the black market.
- 1:28:03Apparently, if it's a catalytic converter, it doesn't stay in Vegas.
- 1:28:06I want to know how big the catalytic converter is on the Oscar Mayer Wiener
- 1:28:10Buffalo because that thing is huge.
- 1:28:11I think it's just like a school bus or something.
- 1:28:14So it's whatever the catalytic converter would look like on a school bus.
- 1:28:17Big.
- 1:28:17It's worth a lot of money.
- 1:28:18They fitted the truck or the wiener with a temporary cat.
- 1:28:22So in November, the FBI in Las Vegas arrested two men on charges of conspiracy.
- 1:28:29commit interstate transportation of stolen property in the resale of 71 catalytic
- 1:28:36converters for more than 16, 000.
- 1:28:40That's good money.
- 1:28:41I think I found my new side job.
- 1:28:43225 a catalytic converter.
- 1:28:45Is that good money?
- 1:28:46Is that a good use of your time?
- 1:28:47It is for 90 seconds with a sawzall.
- 1:28:49I mean, the blades don't cost a whole lot.
- 1:28:51I guess.
- 1:28:52I mean, if you're highly sophisticated, you got a creeper so you can roll out.
- 1:28:56Yeah.
- 1:28:56Under the car, roll out the other side with your catalytic converter.
- 1:28:59Who are you, Slender Man?
- 1:29:00Or are we rolling under, like, a Haven't you seen these trucks?
- 1:29:04They're stealing them from pickups.
- 1:29:05You can get under there and do all sorts of stuff without
- 1:29:07getting them off the ground.
- 1:29:08All right, if it's a truck, sure.
- 1:29:10But there's been plenty, like, Hondas that have had their
- 1:29:12catalytic converters taken out.
- 1:29:14Somebody come take the catalytic converters out of my car, please.
- 1:29:17So I can So I can get insurance to pay the 5, 000 or whatever
- 1:29:22it costs to put in new ones.
- 1:29:23Straight pipe it.
- 1:29:24Well, you know what else is crazy?
- 1:29:26Our favorite rental company hurts.
- 1:29:28Well, maybe not our favorite because it usually hurts my wallet to rent from them.
- 1:29:33They have to pay false arrest claims.
- 1:29:36So this is them renting a car to someone and then thinking
- 1:29:40that that person stole it.
- 1:29:43Top quality service.
- 1:29:45So they were using the same computer system the Southwest uses.
- 1:29:49Yes.
- 1:29:50Yes.
- 1:29:50I was going to say, when did Elon Musk become CEO of Hertz?
- 1:29:54Well, didn't they have a relationship with Tesla?
- 1:29:56They are buying a bunch of Teslas.
- 1:29:58So he clearly has a hand in this.
- 1:30:00And you're fired.
- 1:30:01You're fired.
- 1:30:02And you're fired.
- 1:30:03You brought the car back.
- 1:30:04You're fired.
- 1:30:05It's like an episode of The Apprentice.
- 1:30:07NASA employees operating government rented vehicles were
- 1:30:10some of the victims by Hertz.
- 1:30:11See?
- 1:30:12I'm telling you, collusion!
- 1:30:13SpaceX conspiracy.
- 1:30:15You can't get to work.
- 1:30:17Yes.
- 1:30:17You're fired.
- 1:30:17You're fired.
- 1:30:18Telling you, Elon Musk is the devil.
- 1:30:21Well, there you have it.
- 1:30:21Well, you know what?
- 1:30:22They say the devil goes down to Georgia, but in our case, we're
- 1:30:26going a little further south and talk about alligators and bear.
- 1:30:43You know what?
- 1:30:44We're going to start up north.
- 1:30:45We're gonna start in Michigan.
- 1:30:46This is a cute one.
- 1:30:47It's called Holy Cow, Michigan Man Rides Cow Across Woodward,
- 1:30:52meaning like a street.
- 1:30:53Oh, not Dave Woodward?
- 1:30:55No, no.
- 1:30:57No, Will the Cowboy and his pet heifer Hope were caught crossing
- 1:31:01the intersection together.
- 1:31:03On cowback.
- 1:31:05Who was riding who?
- 1:31:09Why did the cow cross the road?
- 1:31:11To get away from his owner.
- 1:31:13In fairness, I believe he works for like a farm that does sort
- 1:31:18of like petting zoo type stuff.
- 1:31:19So he was actually trying to train the cow.
- 1:31:22Heavy petting.
- 1:31:23To be rideable.
- 1:31:24I'm, you know, I, I don't know.
- 1:31:27Maybe that's what he was doing.
- 1:31:28To be what?
- 1:31:29I missed it.
- 1:31:34I love hearing the headlines before I click into the article.
- 1:31:36This is my new favorite game.
- 1:31:39So that was a little bit of light hearted humor.
- 1:31:42So now we can take a trip down south to Florida, man, where this one is This
- 1:31:47one's a public safety announcement.
- 1:31:49You know, don't do drugs.
- 1:31:51We've been fighting that war since the Bush administration.
- 1:31:53You know, don't drink and drive.
- 1:31:55Don't do drugs and drive.
- 1:31:57And don't do so many drugs that you drive through a cemetery
- 1:32:00mowing down all the tombstones and headstones and then exit the cemetery
- 1:32:05and drive into somebody's house.
- 1:32:07Wasn't that a scene in like Evil Dead?
- 1:32:09Like, I feel like this is like a Bruce Campbell film.
- 1:32:13Driving a Delta 88 through a cemetery knocking over tombstones.
- 1:32:17So what?
- 1:32:18Florida man drove through cemetery, damaged headstones.
- 1:32:22Crashed into house.
- 1:32:23Oh, that's the best part.
- 1:32:24Was it the undertaker's house?
- 1:32:28? I don't know.
- 1:32:29But he cleared the cemetery, crossed the street, went through a fence,
- 1:32:33and then into somebody's house you hear the owner of the house
- 1:32:36thought the neighbors were quiet.
- 1:32:38I wanna know what he was driving.
- 1:32:39He mowed down some cement blocks.
- 1:32:42It was a 78 Pontiac Phoenix, lit back, went through a fence, and wasn't
- 1:32:48stopped till he went into a house.
- 1:32:51It was a Kia Telluride, AX4 Pro.
- 1:32:53You know what it was?
- 1:32:54That person's driveway was on his GPS and they say it was
- 1:32:58a road through the cemetery.
- 1:33:01Meanwhile, the NecroComicon was on his back seat, but we'll
- 1:33:04leave that for another episode.
- 1:33:06Meanwhile, he stole that car so it wasn't even his.
- 1:33:09So we're going to stay in Florida.
- 1:33:10I couldn't decide who was better, Florida man or the Washington woman.
- 1:33:15Oh boy.
- 1:33:16But since we're in Florida, let's stay in Florida.
- 1:33:18This reminds me of our early drive thru episodes and the lady that
- 1:33:23set her boyfriend's Jeep on fire.
- 1:33:24With the Wiccans.
- 1:33:25Yeah, I'm having, I'm having flashbacks.
- 1:33:29So Florida man doing donuts at intersection allegedly hits patrol
- 1:33:34car before crashing his own car.
- 1:33:37Two questions, cars and coffee.
- 1:33:39Tesla must Mustang.
- 1:33:41No, this appears at least by the photo to have been late at night.
- 1:33:46He was found driving recklessly ahead of this drove over a
- 1:33:50raised median went into a slide.
- 1:33:53I don't know at some point then I guess said, Let's do
- 1:33:56donuts in his Chrysler Sebring.
- 1:34:00It actually says he, he got stopped and then he reversed
- 1:34:03backed into the police car.
- 1:34:05So he knew it was there while he yells out the window.
- 1:34:08I drive a Dodge Stratus.
- 1:34:11I don't know.
- 1:34:11I'm thinking he was driving this pickup truck.
- 1:34:14It's a Dodge Ram.
- 1:34:15He rammed it.
- 1:34:16Yeah.
- 1:34:17So he hits a patrol car before crashing his own.
- 1:34:21It's a little confusing the order of operations.
- 1:34:24Wouldn't hitting the patrol car constitute a crash?
- 1:34:27It was rubbing.
- 1:34:28Because he was driven was racing.
- 1:34:29I didn't even think they said he was under the influence of anything.
- 1:34:32So go figure.
- 1:34:33He was under the influence of Florida.
- 1:34:35He was hooning.
- 1:34:37It's called So I don't know what to do with this last one.
- 1:34:41I think it takes the cake.
- 1:34:42It's not I don't know if it's as good as is casting a spell on your boyfriend's
- 1:34:46car and lighting it on fire with candles, but passenger suspected DUI driver calls
- 1:34:53911 On the Washington State Patrol.
- 1:34:58Wait, what?
- 1:34:59The driver argued her constitutional rights were being violated by the pursuit.
- 1:35:04So a drunk driver is driving a car, and they're being pursued by the
- 1:35:08state patrol, and they call the police, on the police, that their
- 1:35:14constitutional rights were being violated.
- 1:35:17That's a bold strategy.
- 1:35:18Like they're, they're calling to say they're being harassed by the police.
- 1:35:25You're driving illegally.
- 1:35:26How do you know that?
- 1:35:27You don't know that I'm drunk.
- 1:35:29I may be driving on the wrong side of the road sideways with a kid hanging out the
- 1:35:33back, but you don't know that I'm drunk.
- 1:35:36It's like that tater salad joke, right?
- 1:35:38I wasn't drunk.
- 1:35:40In public until you put me there.
- 1:35:46I want to hear the 911 recording of that.
- 1:35:49Like, it's gotta be absolutely insane.
- 1:35:52It's got to be because the person was in an F 150 doing like
- 1:35:55over a hundred miles an hour.
- 1:35:57They can go that fast?
- 1:35:58Apparently.
- 1:35:58We've been in and out and stuff.
- 1:36:00And this is like at midnight 30.
- 1:36:03And then the other passengers.
- 1:36:05Call the cops on the cops because they thought the law had changed
- 1:36:09that the cops can't pursue you anymore in high speed 911.
- 1:36:14What's your emergency?
- 1:36:15Yes, I'm being followed
- 1:36:18my drivers.
- 1:36:19Uh, under the influence.
- 1:36:21He's had a couple of 10 beers and the cops are after us.
- 1:36:25But it's just like the sound rules, you can't make noise after
- 1:36:2810 o'clock and the cops can't chase you after 80 miles an hour.
- 1:36:31Like, what the hell is that?
- 1:36:32Well, there has been some of that, right?
- 1:36:34Yeah, the police aren't allowed in some cases, they're not allowed to
- 1:36:37enter into a They should really back off because all it does is endanger
- 1:36:40the officers and other people if they go on these crazy high speed pursuits.
- 1:36:44But there's caveats to this.
- 1:36:46It's like when we know you're driving drunk, we follow you.
- 1:36:51It's like Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.
- 1:36:53You don't get a free pass.
- 1:36:54We deploy the spike strips on you.
- 1:36:56You know what I learned from this article?
- 1:36:58When you said the truck did a hundred miles an hour, it proves a very
- 1:37:03important point that sometimes.
- 1:37:05You need to haul lumber and haul ass truck life, gas or grass.
- 1:37:11Don't be that person either.
- 1:37:12Public safety announcement.
- 1:37:14Well, folks, it's time we go behind the pit wall for some motor sports news.
- 1:37:19This next one is actually really interesting because we saw this
- 1:37:22car in person while we were at Rolex and that's the Hendrick built
- 1:37:27and sponsored garage 56 LeMans.
- 1:37:32This car is going to do NASCAR and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
- 1:37:36I think this is super cool.
- 1:37:38And entering a Camaro in the GT class?
- 1:37:41Interesting to see how it all plays out in June.
- 1:37:44I think it's cool.
- 1:37:45I can't wait to see it race at Le Mans.
- 1:37:47And last month, we also spoke about Travis Pastrana returning to NASCAR.
- 1:37:51And I'm sure a lot of people were probably thinking who, what, where,
- 1:37:54I mean, you know, he's took over doing tricks and whatnot for Subaru
- 1:37:58and, you know, Global Rallycross and all that kind of stuff a while ago.
- 1:38:01But.
- 1:38:02We have some results information for you.
- 1:38:05And I'm happy to report that Travis did a lot better than
- 1:38:09probably any of us expected.
- 1:38:12He ended up 14th in this month's Daytona 500.
- 1:38:16I guess he did better than Kimmy, right?
- 1:38:18Who didn't finish.
- 1:38:19He never made it to the 500.
- 1:38:21That's true.
- 1:38:22I meant just at a NASCAR race in general.
- 1:38:24Yeah, not so good.
- 1:38:25Kimmy, try again.
- 1:38:26Let's talk about open wheel racing.
- 1:38:28So where are we at in Formula One?
- 1:38:31We are just a few short days away from the season opener in Bahrain on March 5th.
- 1:38:40Pre season testing is about to start.
- 1:38:42Formula One's kicking off, but like every year we have to have the big reveal,
- 1:38:47the cars, oh my god, so many memes.
- 1:38:51I have to agree with Eric.
- 1:38:52This year is a little different, but in years past, yes, the reveals.
- 1:38:57of the new liveries.
- 1:38:58I would get so excited just to see the McLaren that looked exactly like
- 1:39:02the McLaren from other McLarens.
- 1:39:04But stickers, brah.
- 1:39:06Stickers.
- 1:39:07This year's reveals were actually quite a bit dramatic.
- 1:39:11The Mercedes car went back to black.
- 1:39:13You know, cue the Amy Winehouse song, you know, that everybody's playing
- 1:39:17everywhere and on their memes.
- 1:39:18The Mercedes looks amazing though.
- 1:39:20I really like it.
- 1:39:21I'm team save.
- 1:39:21You know why they did that?
- 1:39:22Because that was the last time you won.
- 1:39:24No, because apparently it saved them grams of weight.
- 1:39:27Yeah, I heard that too.
- 1:39:30So they did it as a weight savings to just like flat black or whatever.
- 1:39:34Raw carbon fiber or whatever.
- 1:39:35Yeah.
- 1:39:36That's fine.
- 1:39:37So that's some Mercedes trickery there.
- 1:39:39So they'll get penalized for that.
- 1:39:40I don't think there's a rule that says you have to paint your car.
- 1:39:43But like, I watched the Ferrari reveal and I watched these
- 1:39:46two guys doing their podcasts.
- 1:39:48So that told you nothing.
- 1:39:49That was like fanboys salivating over the Ferrari, which honestly,
- 1:39:54I think I liked last year's better.
- 1:39:56I think the red was nicer.
- 1:39:58I liked that it was all red.
- 1:39:59I don't know.
- 1:40:00A fan of how they like splotched black chunks, not even accents.
- 1:40:04It looks more like the Alan Prost, Nigel Mansell era of Ferraris.
- 1:40:09They were darker red.
- 1:40:10Oh, they put Ferrari on the spoiler and the spoiler is black.
- 1:40:13And I'm like, yeah, all that stuff existed like 40 years ago.
- 1:40:16Okay, big deal.
- 1:40:17To me, I couldn't tell the difference between the previous car and this car.
- 1:40:21And if you look at the two cars side by side, there's a lot of differences.
- 1:40:25Actually, the front nose.
- 1:40:27End cap is shaped differently.
- 1:40:29The wing on the front nose actually extends further from the nose itself.
- 1:40:34The side pods are very different how they're channeling the air, how they're
- 1:40:38venting the air, all that stuff.
- 1:40:40I think the wing looks slightly different.
- 1:40:42The louvers all on the sides are flowing the air differently.
- 1:40:46So they made a lot of engineering changes.
- 1:40:49So hopefully.
- 1:40:50Make a better performing handling car.
- 1:40:52Yeah, they appear very subtle.
- 1:40:54Uh, I guess if you just saw it by itself, you go, okay, it's a
- 1:40:58different paint job on the same car.
- 1:41:00But if you look at them side by side in the same front view, side view,
- 1:41:05top view, quite a bit different.
- 1:41:06There's a lot of changes.
- 1:41:08Yeah, it looks like the wing is smaller too.
- 1:41:10It's narrower like they were on the old cars.
- 1:41:12In the old days, they had those skinny boxy wings.
- 1:41:15It's so what's old is new again in some respects.
- 1:41:18I mean, whatever.
- 1:41:19And next year it'll be something else.
- 1:41:20The different, you know, shade of red or whatever.
- 1:41:23Yeah, that's what happens.
- 1:41:24But there's some other news.
- 1:41:26Lance Stroll is out.
- 1:41:27Well, he's out of preseason testing, apparently had a bicycling accident.
- 1:41:30He's a reserve driver is now at the helm, Felipe Drogovic.
- 1:41:35Do we have high expectations for him?
- 1:41:37I have no idea, honestly.
- 1:41:39But he's about to have a job interview, so he better do well.
- 1:41:42Yeah, right.
- 1:41:44So there's been a lot of other rumors flying around the F1 paddock
- 1:41:49in the last month, and that has to do with A four letter word.
- 1:41:54It's not a rumor, it's been announced.
- 1:41:56I know, but there's other rumors that go along with the announcement, because
- 1:41:59there were rumors before, then they were announced, and there's rumors again.
- 1:42:02And we're talking about Ford, F O R D, Ford.
- 1:42:07Returning to formula one.
- 1:42:09And the first question I have is they just lost 2 billion in passenger sales.
- 1:42:14How the hell are they going to afford to run in formula one?
- 1:42:17This is where it went.
- 1:42:18Ah, Oh, got it.
- 1:42:20Okay.
- 1:42:22So I'm seeing things like partnerships with Red Bull.
- 1:42:25Ford is supplying the power plants like they used to do back in the,
- 1:42:28you know, the sixties and seventies for like Lotus and stuff like that.
- 1:42:31So it's not the first time Ford has been in this level of racing in the past.
- 1:42:37Good to see them come back with everything else that's going on.
- 1:42:40I'm just a little curious.
- 1:42:42Maybe we'll have another rich energy fiasco.
- 1:42:46And then it'll give Elizabeth Blackstock and Alanis King
- 1:42:50opportunity to write another book.
- 1:42:52The Ford saga.
- 1:42:54Yes.
- 1:42:55Fixer repair daily.
- 1:42:56Speaking of sagas, Hollywood is dipping their toe.
- 1:43:00In the pool talked about this before because I believe it is
- 1:43:02still untitled is Brad Pitt's new venture of this formula one movie.
- 1:43:09Nobody knows exactly what this is going to be.
- 1:43:11Then he's working with Lewis Hamilton in terms of directing, producing.
- 1:43:16Apparently he's been listening to the auditions of whoever is
- 1:43:19going to be Brad Pitt's co star.
- 1:43:21Shooting is supposed to start later this year for whatever this Formula
- 1:43:25one drama movie is it's called drive to survive and it'll be out on netflix.
- 1:43:31Apparently they are going to be taking footage live at race weekend.
- 1:43:35So maybe it's the traumatization.
- 1:43:39It's just driven.
- 1:43:40It's just the movie driven again.
- 1:43:42Probably seems silly to take live footage at a race when live footage
- 1:43:48is already being recorded for.
- 1:43:49For you, it depends what footage they're trying to take, but also
- 1:43:53if you're bringing your actors in to like stand in the garage while
- 1:43:57nothing's going on kind of thing.
- 1:43:58Right?
- 1:43:59It wouldn't be the same footage.
- 1:44:00They also need to get footage of the cars shifting gears 15 times.
- 1:44:06Yes, with a stick shift in this case, like all American drama
- 1:44:11movies, you have an obligatory toilet scene and that is not usually
- 1:44:14recorded during the live broadcast.
- 1:44:16So they'll have that too, right?
- 1:44:17Yes.
- 1:44:18You brought up drive to survive.
- 1:44:20And I swear to God, Netflix is taunting me every time I log on.
- 1:44:24It's the first thing I see.
- 1:44:26Is a reminder for drive to survive, which kicks off February 24th.
- 1:44:31I'm going to coordinate with your wife and you're just going to walk
- 1:44:34into the room one day and it's going to be on and you can't do it.
- 1:44:36We're going to a clockwork orange.
- 1:44:38Yeah, no, not going to do it.
- 1:44:40Not going to happen.
- 1:44:41Meanwhile, in open wheel news, our last little bit here, Tony Kanan.
- 1:44:46Is finally retiring from IndyCar.
- 1:44:48That's great.
- 1:44:48Doesn't mean he gives up his seat in any of the other racing series he's
- 1:44:52in, like IMSA or WEC or anywhere else.
- 1:44:56He's got a seat.
- 1:44:57Yeah.
- 1:44:58It's like, okay, we'll be due.
- 1:45:01We're, it's not like we're never going to see you again.
- 1:45:03He's retiring from IndyCar so he can do more of the e sports that he's been doing.
- 1:45:09I racing champion, Tony Kanaan.
- 1:45:10It pays better, I guess, right?
- 1:45:13It's that monster energy sponsorship there.
- 1:45:16But speaking of energy drink sponsorships, let's switch over to
- 1:45:19Red Bull TV and talk about WRC news.
- 1:45:23Now, if you want to skip all this, go right ahead.
- 1:45:26But here's the brief, just like Rolex is the kickoff to the season
- 1:45:30and the Daytona 500 and all that rally Monte Carlo kicks off the 13
- 1:45:36event schedule in the WRC series.
- 1:45:39And they've added two new races this year for anybody that's really interested
- 1:45:43rally Chile, and they returned to Mexico as well, but they've also added rally
- 1:45:48EU, which will be held in Germany.
- 1:45:51I enjoy watching the recaps on Red Bull because it's an easy way to
- 1:45:54digest the race, because otherwise, if you try to watch it in real
- 1:45:58time, it would be absolutely mental.
- 1:46:00It takes four days and you know, usually it's like 18 to 20 stages.
- 1:46:04Rally Monte Carlo was won by Sebastian Ogier.
- 1:46:08This makes him the most winningest rally driver in Monte Carlo rally history.
- 1:46:14He was so excited.
- 1:46:16He didn't even show up for rally Sweden, which was the next event two weeks later.
- 1:46:21But overall the whole.
- 1:46:24Race was pretty interesting.
- 1:46:26There's a lot of back and forth between some of the old timers.
- 1:46:28So I think might be on the edge of actually needing to get out of WRC and
- 1:46:32making way for folks like Elvin Evans and Oi Tanik, the end result of Rally
- 1:46:37Monte Carlo was that Toyota took a one, two right out of the gate, which
- 1:46:41was pretty awesome for the madman of Latvala, who is now a team owner.
- 1:46:47You know, principal, as they call them in formula one for gazoo racing Toyota.
- 1:46:51So that's pretty awesome.
- 1:46:52Not a lot of snow this year in Monte Carlo, because as we've seen,
- 1:46:55even here in the United States, it's been a pretty mild winter.
- 1:46:59So Europe, the same thing, a lot of tarmac that they were running on.
- 1:47:02So that made running Monte Carlo very different than usual.
- 1:47:05And the other thing that was pretty cool is we saw the debut
- 1:47:08of the new Ford Puma put out there by teams like M sport and so on.
- 1:47:13They're having issues with the car.
- 1:47:14The drivers are trying to learn it.
- 1:47:15It's a different chassis, obviously than the Fiesta that it replaces.
- 1:47:19And Hyundai was also having problems with their new hybrid system.
- 1:47:23All the rally cars this year are actually hybrids.
- 1:47:26And turbocharged makes for an interesting power delivery system in the race cars.
- 1:47:31If anybody watches Monte Carlo, I think Elvin Evans is hilarious to watch.
- 1:47:35He is so hyper focused on everything he does.
- 1:47:39He leans forward, like he's playing a video game when he's driving
- 1:47:42and he has this look of complete.
- 1:47:44Terror and bewilderment all at the same time.
- 1:47:47It's super comical when you watch the in car view.
- 1:47:50And unfortunately, the support races like WRC2 and WRC3, they
- 1:47:55don't get as much airtime as the WRC1, the big guys, the pros do.
- 1:48:00But in WRC2 right now, Skoda, AKA Volkswagen is kicking
- 1:48:05ass with their new car.
- 1:48:08And there are some American drivers in WRC too.
- 1:48:12So I'll be keeping an eye out for them and checking out their progress.
- 1:48:15Cause it's been a long time since we've had Americans running in WRC.
- 1:48:19So that's pretty cool to see.
- 1:48:20Now I know Brad, you took some time to engage in WRC in the last couple of weeks,
- 1:48:25so you caught up on Sweden, didn't you?
- 1:48:28I did.
- 1:48:28I don't know exactly what I watched.
- 1:48:30Um, it was a recap of some sort.
- 1:48:33I have to agree that if you're a Rally fan and you want to know what happened, yes,
- 1:48:39the recaps are fantastic because they do condense Four days worth of racing and
- 1:48:44drama into a short, like one hour episode of drive to survive what I don't like is
- 1:48:51I, I, sometimes I just want to log in.
- 1:48:53I don't care that I'm not going to see the whole thing.
- 1:48:56I just want to see a rally stage from start to finish.
- 1:48:59Like, I just want to see the driver.
- 1:49:00Like, I just want to see the racing.
- 1:49:02I don't know.
- 1:49:03I feel like you miss a lot.
- 1:49:04Well, it's sort of like watching an autocross though.
- 1:49:07Do you really want to watch every driver make a run?
- 1:49:10Because they are offset.
- 1:49:11They are by themselves, you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:49:15Yes.
- 1:49:15It's something about just watching because how long are the stages?
- 1:49:19They're super long.
- 1:49:20Like it takes all day.
- 1:49:21They run from sunup to sundown.
- 1:49:23I mean, for, I mean, for one driver, one run, how long is it?
- 1:49:26I didn't pay attention to the times.
- 1:49:28I got on the simulator after Sweden and ran some of the segments on my setup.
- 1:49:33And some of the stages are six minutes full bore because they're short.
- 1:49:38Some of the other ones, like a 21 kilometer section, which is like a
- 1:49:42longer power stage, you're on track for.
- 1:49:46Easily 10 to 15 minutes.
- 1:49:48If, depending if you have any mess ups or things like that.
- 1:49:50So you're out there for quite a while.
- 1:49:52I would totally watch a couple people making a complete run of
- 1:49:56the stage or whatever, I don't need to see the whole stage.
- 1:49:59I don't need to see four days of rally.
- 1:50:02Yes.
- 1:50:02The recap would help me there, but just to see some action.
- 1:50:06I feel like the recaps don't show enough action.
- 1:50:09We're on different ends of the pendulum swing.
- 1:50:11I'm so used to watching it that I just want that bite size.
- 1:50:14Give me what I need so I can keep track of what's going on versus watching Esa
- 1:50:20Pekka Lappie do his full power stage run.
- 1:50:22Like, I don't need 12 minutes of him driving.
- 1:50:24Just show me what he did and we'll kind of move on with life, right?
- 1:50:27Well, yeah, because I'm a new to rally.
- 1:50:30Yeah, you're learning.
- 1:50:31We've been talking about this for three seasons.
- 1:50:34Now I'm trying to give it an actual legit chance.
- 1:50:39I would do the same thing for NASCAR, but I'm choosing to
- 1:50:42do it with rally right now.
- 1:50:44I want to give it a chance, but it's just, I don't see enough in
- 1:50:47the recaps to actually make me care.
- 1:50:50So what I think would benefit you and maybe any of our listeners that
- 1:50:53are interested in exploring the world of rally is to check out another
- 1:50:57program they have on Red Bull TV.
- 1:50:59It's about an hour long and they call it the ABCs of rally and
- 1:51:02actually walks you through the different sub disciplines of rallies.
- 1:51:07There's WRC that, you know, we're talking about now, which
- 1:51:09is like sports car racing, right?
- 1:51:12Versus T1 Raid, which is like all the big trucks.
- 1:51:14And then there's Dakar and there's all these different.
- 1:51:17Types of rally from the buggies up through the cars and whatnot.
- 1:51:20So it's cool to like, start with that and get your one on one down.
- 1:51:24And then once you've watched enough of how it works and you can always
- 1:51:28go back into the vault and watch the runs, but they're a little bit more
- 1:51:32raw again, having watched this for years, I like the condensed version.
- 1:51:36When you get to that stage, you're like, man, I watched all of Sunday.
- 1:51:40In 37 minutes, I'm good because I didn't need to watch 18 hours of content to
- 1:51:45kind of figure out what was going on.
- 1:51:47Right.
- 1:51:47I do like that Red Bull this season has deliberately included content from the
- 1:51:53special stages, which are the two on two.
- 1:51:56Overlapping kind of road courses that they develop.
- 1:51:59You saw a lot of that in Sweden.
- 1:52:00It was totally iced over.
- 1:52:01It was really, really cool to see the cars go head to head.
- 1:52:04And if you kind of want a mind bender is try to follow the track and how it,
- 1:52:08you know, runs over itself and how the cars don't end up hitting each other.
- 1:52:11They're really running.
- 1:52:13The same lap, it's a two part lap.
- 1:52:15It's not like a, a pro solo where it's mirror image courses.
- 1:52:18They're on the same track at different points and they're
- 1:52:21chasing each other, basically.
- 1:52:22So it's pretty cool.
- 1:52:23And I'm glad they're showing more of that because that used to be like bonus
- 1:52:26content that you had to go find versus now they're including that in the recap.
- 1:52:31So that was pretty cool.
- 1:52:32But so you watch Sweden.
- 1:52:33What'd you think?
- 1:52:34I thought it was comical what was going on with Craig Breen and Derry Neuville.
- 1:52:40Yeah.
- 1:52:40I thought that the last stage, what was it, stage 18?
- 1:52:43Yeah.
- 1:52:44Where, where they, uh, Neuville, he was fighting for points,
- 1:52:48you know, in the standings.
- 1:52:49Because he's what, he's like second or third, isn't he?
- 1:52:51Right.
- 1:52:51But it's only the second round of racing anyway, I know, but, but still, like,
- 1:52:55they made like all kinds of like strategic changes and then he still crashed out.
- 1:53:00Like he finished the stage, but he still backed into the snow
- 1:53:03drift and slowed him down and up.
- 1:53:05And then his teammate beat him anyway.
- 1:53:07Well, here's the best part about all of that situation, which I love the
- 1:53:11fact that they actually brought this to light and they didn't cover it up.
- 1:53:15Formula one is not the only one with a bunch of politics kind of
- 1:53:18dictating the outcome of the race.
- 1:53:20It was all team orders, but the other thing is Tiri Nouvelle, the whole time
- 1:53:25was just complaining about how much his I 20 was understeering, understeering.
- 1:53:30It won't turn.
- 1:53:31It won't do this, blah, blah, blah, blah, all this stuff.
- 1:53:33And he was just pitching a fit.
- 1:53:35Then I don't know if you paid close attention, but they
- 1:53:37forced them to switch cars.
- 1:53:39That was the bigger thing that Craig Breen got screwed.
- 1:53:43Yeah, so he did the same thing that Mazespin was trying to do to Schumacher.
- 1:53:49It was like, ah, you got the better car, let's switch cars,
- 1:53:51I'll beat you in your car.
- 1:53:52Exactly, and then to your point, he still screwed it up.
- 1:53:55So was it the car or was it the driver?
- 1:53:57Because Craig Breen was flying.
- 1:54:00And he got his first stage win like ever.
- 1:54:02I mean, he's not a newbie either.
- 1:54:04He's been around for a couple of years.
- 1:54:05I've been keeping eyes on him.
- 1:54:07All the new guys, Oytanik, Esa Pekka Lappi, Elvin Evans, Craig Breen, all those
- 1:54:12guys, I mean, they're the up and comers in WRC right now, obviously they're running
- 1:54:15at the higher ranks, Terry Neuville.
- 1:54:17Multi time champion, whatever, not as many as Seb and some of those guys, but
- 1:54:22he's sort of the old dog in this fight.
- 1:54:24And so when they did the car switch and the team where I was
- 1:54:27just like, this is ridiculous.
- 1:54:29And then when he couldn't pull it off, I mean, even, even in the last
- 1:54:33interview, Craig Green had just finished his run and the, and the reporter was
- 1:54:36there telling him what happened and he just kind of smirked and it was great.
- 1:54:41I was loving it.
- 1:54:42It was so good.
- 1:54:43So, so that was fun.
- 1:54:44I could, you're getting me.
- 1:54:46Interested, and I'm seeing on here on our notes a quote from Tanya, and
- 1:54:51it actually makes a ton of sense.
- 1:54:54So watching WRC is like watching the Olympics.
- 1:54:57I think that is 1000 percent true.
- 1:54:59You know, you need the recaps because there's just so much.
- 1:55:03Content to digest.
- 1:55:05You need the recap, but still sometimes when I watch the Olympics,
- 1:55:08I just want to log in and see, you want to watch the figure skating.
- 1:55:13Yeah.
- 1:55:13I know how, I guess I want to see the speed skating.
- 1:55:16There were two other things that came out of Sweden that I thought were pretty cool,
- 1:55:19and I hope you picked up on this, that rally is really volatile, like one minute.
- 1:55:25A guy's eight seconds ahead going into a stage and suddenly he's 20 seconds behind.
- 1:55:30And the guy that was like in sixth place is suddenly first.
- 1:55:33It's really, really crazy.
- 1:55:35And that's why you got to hang on and sort of keep track until the end.
- 1:55:39And those last couple stages are important.
- 1:55:42Now the special stage versus the power stage, those are points
- 1:55:45games versus the overall time.
- 1:55:48So it gets a little complicated.
- 1:55:49Kind of like IMSA and stuff.
- 1:55:51There's multiple races going on, right?
- 1:55:52Are you racing for points?
- 1:55:54Is it for manufacturer?
- 1:55:55Is it for personal time?
- 1:55:56You know, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:55:57So it becomes interesting.
- 1:55:58But the other big thing about Sweden was Takamoto's rollover.
- 1:56:03That was bonkers.
- 1:56:06And he's in the Yaris, he catches the back end and the thing goes ass over
- 1:56:09teakettle like four times or whatever.
- 1:56:11And then they're in the car and the snow comes in through the window.
- 1:56:15The, this, the navigator just gets nailed.
- 1:56:17Right.
- 1:56:18And then I love when he puts it in gear and he tries to take off
- 1:56:22and keep going, but he can't see.
- 1:56:24And the freaking car's turtle, I was like, it couldn't get more comical than that.
- 1:56:29That's rally right there.
- 1:56:30You just never know what's going to happen.
- 1:56:32The stage is constantly changing, especially in, uh, on a snow
- 1:56:36stage or something like that.
- 1:56:38I mean, every car that goes through there is on a completely different
- 1:56:41track than the car coming behind them.
- 1:56:43That bit Craig Breen and like stage 16 or whatever, because they
- 1:56:46did the reverse grid because he ended up winning the previous one.
- 1:56:50And then he was like at the back and he goes, I'm dealing with ruts
- 1:56:53that, you know, are up to the door.
- 1:56:54And it's like, the car wouldn't do anything for him.
- 1:56:56I mean, he did the best he could, but that one was a stage they had already run.
- 1:57:01He's like, I got this and he had killed it.
- 1:57:03They ran it again.
- 1:57:03And it was just like, he couldn't do anything with it.
- 1:57:06So you start taking those times and you averaging them out and
- 1:57:09it gets really complicated from a scoring perspective, but it's what
- 1:57:12makes it exciting because it's not.
- 1:57:14Well, he was a 10th of a second off of his last lap, right?
- 1:57:17It's super variable.
- 1:57:18No, no, everything changes then.
- 1:57:20That's why they need 18 stages.
- 1:57:22Yeah.
- 1:57:23Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:57:24I can totally see why you like rally because of all the scoring.
- 1:57:27It's super complex.
- 1:57:28You totally nerd out on that shit.
- 1:57:30I'm sure.
- 1:57:31You know what else I nerd out on and talking about things that are
- 1:57:33constantly changing alpha Romeo.
- 1:57:36Part of Stellantis.
- 1:57:37If we haven't forgotten.
- 1:57:40It looks so good.
- 1:57:41Well, they're getting out of formula one, as we talked about throughout
- 1:57:44season three, how Audi is going to take over the Sauber team, which
- 1:57:48Alfa Romeo currently heads up.
- 1:57:49Now, the interview given with the race director at Alfa Romeo is saying that
- 1:57:54they're going to take a gamble and head into endurance sports car racing.
- 1:57:59So you may see an Alfa Romeo at Le Mans.
- 1:58:03In 2024 and beyond.
- 1:58:04I will totally root for this car.
- 1:58:06It's pretty sick looking.
- 1:58:07Yeah.
- 1:58:08Alpha grill is just something about it.
- 1:58:10Right?
- 1:58:11Yeah.
- 1:58:11Yeah.
- 1:58:12Maybe it's the Ferrari that's supposed to be out at Le Mans this
- 1:58:15year, rebadged and good for them.
- 1:58:16They get to keep the investment going in the car that they built because Alpha and
- 1:58:20Ferrari do share a lot, but I'm excited to see Alfa Romeo coming to the big stage.
- 1:58:25That'd be really, really cool.
- 1:58:26It's been a long time since there was an Alpha at Le Mans.
- 1:58:29Well, in other racing news from the virtual world.
- 1:58:32There's still no definitive release date for the latest installment of
- 1:58:37Forza Motorsport, which, I wish they would just call it Forza Motorsport
- 1:58:418, because whenever you search Forza Motorsport release date, you
- 1:58:45get the original Forza Motorsport.
- 1:58:47So you still have to, like, Google search Forza Motorsport 8 to find anything
- 1:58:51related to this latest installment.
- 1:58:53It alleges sometime this year before or after the cyber truck, it's a race.
- 1:58:58Which one?
- 1:58:59Well, that's a, that's a good one.
- 1:59:00What comes out first?
- 1:59:01Cyber truck or Forza Motorsport, whatever.
- 1:59:04It's becoming like Gran Turismo where it's like, they promise a
- 1:59:07new one every year, and then it takes 10 years for it to release.
- 1:59:10Meanwhile, somebody else has come along and, you know, usurped all the
- 1:59:14popularity of, That particular genre of game or whatever, you know, they
- 1:59:18definitely have not been advertising Forza Motorsport eight until like the
- 1:59:23last two years, like Forza Motorsport seven didn't come out and they weren't
- 1:59:27like the next year, like eight's coming.
- 1:59:29There was silence.
- 1:59:30We're still seeing effects of the pandemic.
- 1:59:33Well, the effect too, is that it's going to cost a hundred dollars
- 1:59:35when it comes out and you're going to have to buy a new system to run
- 1:59:38it, because it's only going to be available in the series X or in your PC.
- 1:59:41I have one.
- 1:59:42Oh, lucky you.
- 1:59:43It's a hundred dollars anyway, because if you want to get the VIP
