- 0:01Speaker 1: The Twins get swept in Pittsburgh as a once promising
- 0:05Speaker 1: road trip ends in disaster with now five straight losses
- 0:10Speaker 1: for Minnesota. Welcome back to Twins Cities Territory. Whatever the
- 0:15Speaker 1: hell that is. Our Minnesota Twins podcast is what it
- 0:18Speaker 1: is here on the Fouled Territory Network. I'm Zach Pierce
- 0:21Speaker 1: of the Athletic, joined by Dan Hayes, the Athletics, Minnesota
- 0:24Speaker 1: Twins beat writer and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer and
- 0:28Speaker 1: former Minnesota Twin.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Guys.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We kind of glossed over two losses in Chicago on
- 0:34Speaker 1: Friday show as we indulged in our radio war with
- 0:37Speaker 1: our friends in Atlanta. Good news, I guess, is that
- 0:40Speaker 1: we don't have to gloss over right now because that's
- 0:42Speaker 1: all that's happened since the last time we spoke. More
- 0:44Speaker 1: losses for the Twins, like I said, swept in Pittsburgh
- 0:48Speaker 1: two one run games to start the weekend. Both of
- 0:50Speaker 1: those were heartbreakers in different ways, and then pretty much
- 0:54Speaker 1: blown out on Sunday in a nine to three loss.
- 0:57Speaker 1: They've lost five straight. They're twenty seven and three. They've
- 1:00Speaker 1: fallen down five and a half games back of Chicago
- 1:03Speaker 1: in the Central. Uh, it's for second place in the Central.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Another game away from Cleveland. Beyond that with the White
- 1:10Speaker 1: Sox coming into town this week as the Twins return home.
- 1:13Speaker 1: But dan Uh just a brutal series, no other way
- 1:17Speaker 1: to put it. Uh. Some some close calls and then
- 1:20Speaker 1: and then a wipeout on Sunday. But the Twins are
- 1:22Speaker 1: reeling in every way and also dealing with some injuries.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the the losses themselves are are difficult,
- 1:30Speaker 2: but the couple of injuries that they suffered the last
- 1:33Speaker 2: three days. Losing Kendrick Rojas on Thursday, you know, he
- 1:37Speaker 2: got scratched. That kind of set them in a spot
- 1:40Speaker 2: where the bullpen lost one of its length guys and
- 1:43Speaker 2: they scrambled all weekend. But losing Bailey Ober on Sunday
- 1:48Speaker 2: after his start Saturday, he's got some elbow soreness or
- 1:52Speaker 2: elbow inflammation and has gotten the MRI today. You know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: you have those two things back to back. This pitching
- 2:00Speaker 2: staff is scrambling. They have four healthy starting road starting
- 2:04Speaker 2: pitchers in the rotation right now, and Connor Prelip is
- 2:09Speaker 2: the guy that wanted to manage and you know, give
- 2:12Speaker 2: him an extra day here and there, and TODs Bradley
- 2:14Speaker 2: is still just two starts back from his chest his
- 2:18Speaker 2: pectoral muscle injury. They were kind of managing his workload too,
- 2:23Speaker 2: So I mean it is scramble mode, and it's scramble
- 2:28Speaker 2: mode unlike what we've seen at any point. Because the
- 2:30Speaker 2: one thing that Twins have had consistently throughout this season
- 2:34Speaker 2: was starting pitching. Even though they were eight and nine
- 2:37Speaker 2: deep on their depth chart, you know, they've they've been
- 2:41Speaker 2: able to consistently throw guys out there. They had a
- 2:42Speaker 2: three sixty seven ERA going into this road trip as
- 2:45Speaker 2: the starters. They had an eight thirty one ERA over
- 2:48Speaker 2: ten games as starters, and it was under five innings
- 2:52Speaker 2: per start. It was forty seven innings for the ten games.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It really put them in a deep pole, and you
- 2:57Speaker 2: saw them scramble to the you know, look at the
- 3:01Speaker 2: Travis Adams. He pitched I think twice. I think he
- 3:06Speaker 2: pitched three times in the road trip. The last time
- 3:08Speaker 2: was in Chicago. He kind of had a rough inning,
- 3:12Speaker 2: gave up the first reliever homers since May eighth, after
- 3:15Speaker 2: Zach Jinks. The bullpen got sent out on Friday, went
- 3:21Speaker 2: to Louisville.
- 3:22Speaker 3: And then never mind call back.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, got called back.
- 3:26Speaker 3: It's a great phone call to Bill, great call to gain.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yes, I mean, hey, you're going to make forty five
- 3:32Speaker 2: hundred dollars today versus what your minor league wages were,
- 3:35Speaker 2: and where he'll put you probably most likely first class
- 3:38Speaker 2: if they could find it last minute. He got some
- 3:40Speaker 2: nice frequent fire miles back and forth, and you get
- 3:43Speaker 2: to come to the big leagues like great calling. He's
- 3:46Speaker 2: here right now because they are just running guys in
- 3:50Speaker 2: and out and they are so strapped for fresh arms
- 3:54Speaker 2: right now, in the middle of a seventeen game stretch.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It's you know, they called it August the dog days,
- 3:59Speaker 2: but this three city trip led to some early dog
- 4:02Speaker 2: days for this team. Right now, they are in grind
- 4:05Speaker 2: mode without.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Question, Tyler. During this five game losing streak, the Twins
- 4:10Speaker 1: have allowed six runs or more in all five of
- 4:12Speaker 1: those games, after only doing that twice in the previous sixteen.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It looks like obviously long season things go round and round,
- 4:22Speaker 1: but clearly that the whole pitching staff is struggling with
- 4:26Speaker 1: the weight of it all and the injuries adding up.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, like Dan said, it's this is the one. Like
- 4:33Speaker 3: we've been like moderately like, Okay, we can get to
- 4:36Speaker 3: the next week or the next series kind of thing.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But this is now becoming you know, you say we
- 4:41Speaker 3: have four we technically have like three and a half starters.
- 4:43Speaker 3: With Prelip, they're being very careful, but Taj, they're going
- 4:47Speaker 3: to be very careful. So if anything pops up during
- 4:50Speaker 3: one of their outings, like they're just going to be
- 4:51Speaker 3: out of the game, which is going to crush the pin.
- 4:54Speaker 3: So basically you're looking at Joe, you know, once a
- 4:57Speaker 3: five games split to kind of say everyone a little bit,
- 5:02Speaker 3: and that's hard to do. It's hard to expect from
- 5:04Speaker 3: one guy, which granted he's pitching great, he's going to
- 5:08Speaker 3: be an all star, you know, all the things, but
- 5:09Speaker 3: it's just like you need that breath of fresh air.
- 5:13Speaker 3: And they kept trying it. You know, they've already had
- 5:15Speaker 3: the turnover that we talk about every year. It's like,
- 5:17Speaker 3: you know, it takes the whole forty man roster. Well
- 5:20Speaker 3: we're at the back of that forty man roster. And
- 5:22Speaker 3: now it's becoming like if someone like breathing that can
- 5:25Speaker 3: come give us five innings tonight, you know, and it's
- 5:29Speaker 3: a bad spot to be in. It's not a fun
- 5:32Speaker 3: place to be, you know. I've I was a part
- 5:34Speaker 3: of teams with one hundred plus losses, Like it's one
- 5:37Speaker 3: you show up to the yard sometimes you're just like, man, like,
- 5:40Speaker 3: what are we going to do today to try to
- 5:42Speaker 3: squeak one out? And you know, it gets to the
- 5:46Speaker 3: real dark side of it is you wait for that
- 5:48Speaker 3: moment to happen sometimes where it's like the one little
- 5:50Speaker 3: air or the misqueue, or an umpire misses a call
- 5:54Speaker 3: they can't overturn, and then it's just the wheels fall
- 5:57Speaker 3: off and it's a bad spot to man. It's you know,
- 6:01Speaker 3: luckily it's June first. You know, there's a lot of
- 6:04Speaker 3: season left, you know, but if they don't turn around,
- 6:08Speaker 3: it makes it for a really long rest of the year.
- 6:10Speaker 3: But you know, this this week will be a trying
- 6:13Speaker 3: test for the boys. You know, get back home, play
- 6:16Speaker 3: a team they just played. Hopefully you know, change the
- 6:19Speaker 3: results of those games. And uh, you know we needed
- 6:22Speaker 3: we need a big one from Joe tonight. At the
- 6:24Speaker 3: end of the day, That's that's all that really needs
- 6:26Speaker 3: to happen.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Friday was probably the biggest gut punch of the weekend. Guys,
- 6:33Speaker 1: with the Twins, leading five to four into the eighth inning,
- 6:36Speaker 1: made an absolute meal of the bottom of the eighth
- 6:38Speaker 1: when when Luke Keishall dropped that at least one if
- 6:42Speaker 1: not two out ball at second base, they get out
- 6:45Speaker 1: of it, preserve the five to four lead into the ninth,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and then Taylor Rogers gives up the walk off homer
- 6:51Speaker 1: to Brian Reynolds, who actually had the game winning hit
- 6:54Speaker 1: or a game winning at bat, the zack fly that
- 6:56Speaker 1: provided the winning run in UH In Saturday game as well.
- 7:01Speaker 1: On Saturday, they were down seven to one, came back
- 7:03Speaker 1: to Tide at seven, lost ten to nine. Both both
- 7:05Speaker 1: winnable games. Both just the kind of the things Dan
- 7:08Speaker 1: that just don't don't go your way when things aren't
- 7:10Speaker 1: going your way.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was Friday was scramble mode the whole
- 7:15Speaker 2: way right they they were fighting. It felt like Pittsburgh
- 7:19Speaker 2: had a shot every couple innings and just kept pushing,
- 7:22Speaker 2: kept pushing. And the eighth inning escape was incredible, to
- 7:26Speaker 2: be honest, like the fact that you know you're going
- 7:30Speaker 2: to a young guy and Cody Lars Lawson, who had
- 7:33Speaker 2: just come off the I l another here's another sign
- 7:36Speaker 2: of scramble mode. Cody Larson had just come off the
- 7:39Speaker 2: IL and he hadn't even pitched very well Triple A
- 7:41Speaker 2: during his rehab. He was pretty he was pretty rough,
- 7:45Speaker 2: like you would expect a guy coming off an elbow
- 7:46Speaker 2: thing and had him not pitched in forty days or
- 7:49Speaker 2: whatever it was. And he got out of it because
- 7:52Speaker 2: he he has this really funky delivery and his fastball
- 7:57Speaker 2: has some good characteristics. He can miss bats. He's thrown
- 8:00Speaker 2: ninety two when he's really going well, it's throwing ninety four.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But for him to get scrambled there was was very
- 8:07Speaker 2: impressive because he got the double play ball and then
- 8:10Speaker 2: Keyshall missed, you know, just didn't catch the relay and
- 8:14Speaker 2: it's set up first and third with you know, just
- 8:17Speaker 2: an unwinnable position. He got out of it. You Know,
- 8:20Speaker 2: Taylor Rodgers has been really good this year, and we've
- 8:22Speaker 2: seen the vlo back we saw back in that outing.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I mean, he was throwing ninety three, which for Taylor
- 8:27Speaker 2: Rodgers is more like a couple of years ago Taylor
- 8:29Speaker 2: Rodgers versus what we see in the last two years.
- 8:32Speaker 2: There's encouraging signs. But he left the fastball just where
- 8:36Speaker 2: Reynolds wanted it. He was trying to get it end
- 8:38Speaker 2: it was not quite in enough and Reynolds hit it
- 8:41Speaker 2: out and it was you know, it was sort of
- 8:44Speaker 2: just how this, like you said, how things are going
- 8:46Speaker 2: for this team right now, there's just in a weird
- 8:50Speaker 2: spot where there's not a lot of margin for error
- 8:52Speaker 2: and it doesn't seem like things are falling their way.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And you know, I mean ten game, road trip, three city,
- 8:58Speaker 2: that's long. Some of these guys, that was the first
- 9:00Speaker 2: time they've ever experienced that.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It's never done that before.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Those those do not I only caught the last seven
- 9:08Speaker 2: in person, and I am wiped out and I didn't pitch.
- 9:13Speaker 2: They hit me warm up a few times. I got
- 9:15Speaker 2: dry humps a few times, but they did not need.
- 9:17Speaker 1: To see a doctor. Dan that you don't think you
- 9:19Speaker 1: should be that wiped out?
- 9:21Speaker 2: Yeah, the Midnight of Rivals. Yeah, but you know, Saturday
- 9:29Speaker 2: it showed you where they were in terms of like
- 9:32Speaker 2: who they used in the pen because Cody Funderberg just
- 9:35Speaker 2: back gets to and man, it's I'm forgetting already. Who
- 9:41Speaker 2: the other picture was. Was it Travis Adams? No, it
- 9:45Speaker 2: wasn't Travis Adams. Wow, this is not good podcasting, right, here.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Which what game are we talking about?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Saturday, the ten to nine game. They they rolled out
- 9:56Speaker 2: two relievers for long appearances.
- 9:58Speaker 3: And yeah, I can't remember the first one. It was
- 10:04Speaker 3: all I don't computer in front of.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Me, thunder, Yeah, sorry, Yeah, John was the one forgot
- 10:16Speaker 2: the local kid, but he came up for one day
- 10:18Speaker 2: and he got because he's a fresh arm and got
- 10:21Speaker 2: sent out. But they only had those two guys available.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And and on Sunday, Zebbe Matthews, who had been pretty
- 10:28Speaker 2: consistent in his three starts, looked pretty good at times,
- 10:31Speaker 2: had seven strikeouts but just left pitches in the middle
- 10:34Speaker 2: of the plate and only lasted four and a third.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And Mike Perettis, who nobody had heard of, and you know,
- 10:42Speaker 2: no Twins fans really are familiar with, because he's one
- 10:45Speaker 2: of those guys that's a late bloomer and had a
- 10:47Speaker 2: really good last last season and had a good start
- 10:50Speaker 2: to this season. He gets the call and gets added
- 10:53Speaker 2: to the forty man and comes in and throws three
- 10:57Speaker 2: and two thirds. Like they're at the point right now
- 11:00Speaker 2: where you know you can't bring in the trusted guys
- 11:03Speaker 2: because those trusted guys are a little beat up and
- 11:07Speaker 2: having pitched a lot, and you know, I looked at
- 11:10Speaker 2: the relief chart, Bobby Knightingale, how I look at that
- 11:14Speaker 2: and it was like, who could you have really pitched
- 11:15Speaker 2: the last couple of days. They're they're in a rough
- 11:18Speaker 2: spot right now. I mean, for ten games, had they
- 11:21Speaker 2: lost all ten and nine innings, that's eighty innings to cover,
- 11:25Speaker 2: except they won four of them and somewhere around the
- 11:29Speaker 2: bullpen covered somewhere around thirty seven innings on that road trip,
- 11:32Speaker 2: I believe, and it may have been thirty eight or
- 11:36Speaker 2: thirty nine with extras in Chicago the one night. That
- 11:39Speaker 2: is a lot to have to ask guys to cover
- 11:41Speaker 2: four innings a game for ten days with no days off,
- 11:44Speaker 2: and there's still no days off for seven more days.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So it is it's definitely got check time.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Yeah, the seventeen straight is always the taxing time, Like
- 11:57Speaker 3: you know, you know it's coming and see it and
- 11:59Speaker 3: then it's like this happened. You get a little injury here,
- 12:03Speaker 3: and it's just all the wheels fall off and it's like, Okay,
- 12:06Speaker 3: we've got to survive ten more days or whatever it is.
- 12:08Speaker 3: And it's yeah, so like I said, you show up
- 12:11Speaker 3: to the yard and you're just like, no one, no
- 12:13Speaker 3: one step on anything, no one look at anything wrong, Like,
- 12:16Speaker 3: just just get to this game and get to the
- 12:18Speaker 3: ninth day, just get to the other side of it,
- 12:21Speaker 3: because it's yeah, you get you start looking around when
- 12:23Speaker 3: there's a new guy in the locker room every day,
- 12:25Speaker 3: and you're just like, we're in a bad spot. And
- 12:28Speaker 3: it's it gets you feel bad too, because it's like
- 12:31Speaker 3: some guys do their job and they just got to
- 12:32Speaker 3: go because there's we need we literally need a body
- 12:35Speaker 3: in the bullet or in the rotation, and you know,
- 12:38Speaker 3: it's unfortunate, but you know guys, guys will get debuts
- 12:41Speaker 3: out of it, and then guys will do their job
- 12:43Speaker 3: and get sent down. And that's just kind of part
- 12:44Speaker 3: of it. But it'll be interesting if it adds up
- 12:48Speaker 3: to as a season progresses, Like with the new rules,
- 12:50Speaker 3: they can't just up and down guys anymore, right, I'm
- 12:55Speaker 3: sure they'll run into that. They'll run with some of
- 12:57Speaker 3: these guys. It's already been you know, two or three.
- 13:00Speaker 3: I'm so it'll be interesting.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Twins haven't been off since May twenty first, and not
- 13:06Speaker 1: again until next Monday, June eight seventeen, straight as the
- 13:10Speaker 1: guys point out. If you like what you hear and
- 13:13Speaker 1: you're watching on YouTube, there's a QR code on the screen.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Now you can subscribe and follow along with Twin Cities
- 13:19Speaker 1: Territory are trying to get to five hundred subs. Think
- 13:22Speaker 1: we've sailed past three hundred now getting there on the
- 13:25Speaker 1: way up. And with that, it's time for a word
- 13:31Speaker 1: from our sponsor, which is FanDuel. FanDuel has this game.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Perhaps you've heard of it, Daily Dingers. You can play
- 13:42Speaker 1: it right now on FanDuel dot com. The MLB season
- 13:45Speaker 1: in full swing. You just make a pick on who
- 13:47Speaker 1: you think is going to hit a home run today.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Can be a twin, doesn't have to be a twin.
- 13:53Speaker 1: But we're going to talk twins because one of the
- 13:56Speaker 1: few things that actually was good about this weekend, guys,
- 13:58Speaker 1: was the offense. The Twins had some bright spots at
- 14:03Speaker 1: the plate. Brooks Ley a couple of homers, Luke keishall
- 14:05Speaker 1: five for twelve overall, four RBIs for Tristan Gray, also
- 14:10Speaker 1: for brooks Lee, Cody Clemens a home run. If there's
- 14:13Speaker 1: a positive takeaway Dann from the weekend, it seems like
- 14:16Speaker 1: the plate was it.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and that was a decent staff they were facing.
- 14:20Speaker 2: They didn't get Paul Skins, but I mean that was
- 14:24Speaker 2: all three starters. The Pirates throughout were good, and the Twins,
- 14:27Speaker 2: you know, they didn't have much of a chance against
- 14:29Speaker 2: Ashcraft on Sunday. He struck out eleven. He was pitching
- 14:34Speaker 2: pretty fast. You saw Cody Clemens erupt at the plate
- 14:37Speaker 2: in the first inning because he thought he got quick pitched.
- 14:40Speaker 2: And after the game, brooks Lee made a comment saying
- 14:44Speaker 2: that that was one of the fastest guys I've seen
- 14:47Speaker 2: throwing as far as in between pitches, getting on the mound,
- 14:50Speaker 2: going and not letting guys kind of get settled in.
- 14:54Speaker 2: And it showed early on. They got the three late.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Brooksley hit two home runs late but Saturday, being down
- 15:02Speaker 2: seven to one and bouncing back, and Trevor Larnak put
- 15:06Speaker 2: one in the river on Friday. You know, crazy stats here,
- 15:10Speaker 2: crazy stats.
- 15:11Speaker 1: More reachable water from ballparks. Yes, that's so fun.
- 15:17Speaker 2: That was That was a crazy stat. Trevor Larnk was
- 15:20Speaker 2: the eighty sixth person to ever do it. And that
- 15:22Speaker 2: park's been around since I think it's the twenty fifth
- 15:25Speaker 2: year of PNC Park. Trevor Larnark was the eighty sixth
- 15:30Speaker 2: guy and like an inning later O'Neil Cruz became the
- 15:33Speaker 2: eighty seventh.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Lam And Cruises.
- 15:38Speaker 2: They they said went into the water on the fly,
- 15:41Speaker 2: which only that was the seventh time that's ever happened,
- 15:46Speaker 2: which is shocking. So we saw a little bit of PNC.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Parking in the stadium in the water is just now
- 15:52Speaker 1: there's trees.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good little you know, it's got to
- 15:57Speaker 2: be fifty feet extra like to get you're coming from
- 16:01Speaker 2: that height. So you have a shot and it's a
- 16:03Speaker 2: it's a far droped down to the Allegheny River, but
- 16:08Speaker 2: not a lot of guys have hit it on the fly.
- 16:09Speaker 2: And actually they used to have a camera to out there,
- 16:12Speaker 2: but the trees are so overgrown now that it's an
- 16:15Speaker 2: ineffective shot apparently, And so they claimed that O'Neal Cruz
- 16:20Speaker 2: made it on the fly, and you know, I wouldn't
- 16:25Speaker 2: put it past them. That was a monster shot. But yeah, sorry,
- 16:29Speaker 2: getting away from the offense there there were good signs.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Luke Keyshaw has had a really good May. He's getting
- 16:33Speaker 2: on base about four in May, you know, learning at
- 16:38Speaker 2: that moment there, Yeah, yes, well that was, it's a
- 16:42Speaker 2: new fresh month for him, and I think he can
- 16:45Speaker 2: he's starting to put April. But you look at Cody Clemens.
- 16:52Speaker 2: You mentioned the home run on Friday, he almost he
- 16:55Speaker 2: was a home run short of the cycle on Saturday,
- 16:58Speaker 2: he you know, and he said afterwards we were talking
- 17:01Speaker 2: to about he said, yeah. Unfortunately the fans behind the
- 17:05Speaker 2: dugout knew it too, and they were all over me
- 17:07Speaker 2: about it. And you're thinking about it, because how could
- 17:10Speaker 2: you not be thinking about a cycle? And then he
- 17:13Speaker 2: took a cut in his forth at bat and popped
- 17:15Speaker 2: out on the endfield. You could tell it was a
- 17:17Speaker 2: healthy cut. But there were good signs from the offense.
- 17:20Speaker 2: They're going to need the offense to carry them right now.
- 17:22Speaker 2: They're going to need to have some breathing room. It's
- 17:24Speaker 2: what we talked about early in the year with the bullpen.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Even though it's funny, the back end of the bullpen
- 17:29Speaker 2: is definitely a little bit better at this point. It's
- 17:31Speaker 2: a little bit more solid, and early in the year
- 17:34Speaker 2: we said that they needed to give the bullpen breathing
- 17:37Speaker 2: room because the back end wasn't solid. Now the back
- 17:41Speaker 2: end's solid, But the reason why we need breathing room
- 17:43Speaker 2: is because they're going to be relying on guys six,
- 17:46Speaker 2: seven and eight in that bullpen a lot, and those
- 17:48Speaker 2: typically aren't the guys you want and type ballgames, you
- 17:51Speaker 2: need to give them room to work, and that's what
- 17:55Speaker 2: needs to happen for this team at this point.
- 18:00Speaker 1: The Twins face David Sandlin tonight, who's making his second
- 18:04Speaker 1: career major league start. The first you might remember was
- 18:07Speaker 1: last week against the Twins. It was a fifteen to
- 18:11Speaker 1: two come from behind White Sox win. Come from behind
- 18:15Speaker 1: because the first batter of the game Byron Buckston, had
- 18:19Speaker 1: off of Sandlin and he did not allow another hit
- 18:21Speaker 1: in six hittings work. That was the only hit he
- 18:24Speaker 1: gave up. So with some recent evidence, we now come
- 18:29Speaker 1: to you guys. Oh I should say before we make
- 18:30Speaker 1: our predictions for home runs tonight. We are now four
- 18:33Speaker 1: for five as a podcast, picking correctly a twin to
- 18:37Speaker 1: homer day of and four for four when all three
- 18:40Speaker 1: panelists take it seriously. Unlike this time, oh my decided
- 18:45Speaker 1: to pick an injured player anyway, David Sandlin on the mound,
- 18:50Speaker 1: Twins returning home to target Field tonight, Dan, who's your pick?
- 18:56Speaker 2: Why don't you guys go first this time.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Why let's give Tyler a first pick.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I'm riding that. I want the hot hand. Give me,
- 19:02Speaker 3: give me Clemens pull side. He's gonna stay hot.
- 19:07Speaker 1: You're gonna call your shot pull side too. I like that.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm where it's going, not just it's happening.
- 19:13Speaker 1: We're too good at this. We have to up our
- 19:14Speaker 1: difficulty here a little bit. Clemens pull side. All right,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I guess I'll go second.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Dan, you may oh you could take the guy that
- 19:28Speaker 2: homeward off him last time.
- 19:29Speaker 1: It's just too obvious.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I feel I'm gonna go back to Trevor Lawny.
- 19:37Speaker 3: He's always my He's always my like one B.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll lead it for you, Dan, if you want
- 19:43Speaker 1: to clean up.
- 19:44Speaker 2: With No, I'm not gonna take Buck. I look and
- 19:47Speaker 2: I'm and I would take brooks Lee except as I
- 19:52Speaker 2: wrote in my story today, brooks Lee has a nine
- 19:55Speaker 2: to fifty ops on the road and a five o
- 19:58Speaker 2: three ops at home. Uh, and I'm not quite. I
- 20:03Speaker 2: asked him about it after for Yeah. I asked him
- 20:07Speaker 2: about it after the game on Sunday, and first he said,
- 20:11Speaker 2: I don't give an f about it. It was great.
- 20:14Speaker 2: It was like one of my favorite exchanges. And he's like,
- 20:17Speaker 2: I haven't. I didn't know that, and then he gave
- 20:19Speaker 2: an answer about thinking because he had more at bats
- 20:22Speaker 2: on the road, because he'll get late at bats, and
- 20:24Speaker 2: he actually does hit better late in games. First time through,
- 20:28Speaker 2: his OPS is not good. Second time through, like Innians
- 20:31Speaker 2: four through six, he's got like almost eight hundred OPS,
- 20:34Speaker 2: and then I'm guessing it's over seven hundred OPS with
- 20:37Speaker 2: the home run yesterday for innings seven through nine. However,
- 20:41Speaker 2: because it's the home I'm not going with Brooksley. I'm
- 20:43Speaker 2: gonna go with Dad's strength and go with the Rice Owl.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Tristan Gray had good swings. You know, he just came back.
- 20:51Speaker 2: He missed the Boston series. He came back for Chicago
- 20:55Speaker 2: after his wife gave birth, and he owed some really
- 21:00Speaker 2: good swings throughout that road trip. I really like the
- 21:04Speaker 2: first game, he looks a little rusty, like a guy
- 21:06Speaker 2: who hadn't batted in four days. But then he was
- 21:10Speaker 2: hitting a lot of hard like to the wall and
- 21:13Speaker 2: right against the White Sox. So we're gonna go Tristan Gray,
- 21:16Speaker 2: which is gonna be if I get that one. If
- 21:19Speaker 2: we get the obscure pick. I'm excited about that.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I'll stop bringing up the time you picked Buckston when
- 21:25Speaker 1: he was hurt. If Tristan Gray hovers a deal, cool yeah,
- 21:30Speaker 1: Cody Clevens, Trevor Laurniy, Tristan Gray, and that's our picks. Uh.

- 22:15Speaker 1: Speaking of Byron Buxton, if you if you watch Friday Show,
- 22:20Speaker 1: a lot of it was about Byron Buxton in our
- 22:22Speaker 1: fight with a couple of Atlanta radio hosts, and Dan
- 22:28Speaker 1: went all in double down on the Twins are not
- 22:31Speaker 1: going to trade Byron Buxton. There's no way they're not
- 22:33Speaker 1: going to trade the fraid of the face of the franchise.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Ever since this Fighter upted with Atlanta, the Twins have
- 22:41Speaker 1: not won a game. Bailey over has been it's just
- 22:43Speaker 1: been bad news after bad news. And I'm sorry to
- 22:45Speaker 1: say Dan that the.
- 22:52Speaker 2: You know your AI crap is your AI trap is awesome. Zach,
- 23:03Speaker 2: I like that you made.
- 23:04Speaker 3: This damn you churnoff is the one.
- 23:10Speaker 1: If you're.
- 23:12Speaker 2: If you're watching, I don't. I don't have my glasses on,
- 23:15Speaker 2: so I did not actually see that.
- 23:18Speaker 3: I'll do zero percent. We're keeping viron is. Dan was right,
- 23:23Speaker 3: zero percent.
- 23:24Speaker 1: If you're wanting all the way on the other end,
- 23:27Speaker 1: you're seeing this.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Damn you turnoff Byron is a brave.
- 23:32Speaker 1: The yes, I did make this AI slap yesterday. I
- 23:37Speaker 1: also just noticed putting it on the screen earlier today
- 23:40Speaker 1: to get this ready at that at the very bottom
- 23:42Speaker 1: and says updated May eighteenth to twenty twenty five, even
- 23:46Speaker 1: though I asked for this last while.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Wow, so do not it's really on it.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Yeah, do not alternate universe.
- 23:54Speaker 1: There is zero accuracy whatsoever to that. But it was
- 24:01Speaker 1: a rough weekend for the Twins, as we said, Sweep
- 24:04Speaker 1: and Pittsburgh, even though a good point, Tyler. We didn't
- 24:06Speaker 1: even talk earlier about how they didn't even have to
- 24:08Speaker 1: face Paul Skenes. But despite that three losses. Dan has
- 24:13Speaker 1: written his thoughts on the twins losing streak on The Athletic.
- 24:17Speaker 1: If you'd like to read more, head over there check
- 24:19Speaker 1: it out. Other storylines that are that are kind of
- 24:22Speaker 1: percolating as the Twins return home Dan include Simmon Woods Richardson,
- 24:25Speaker 1: who was forced into a emergency start against Chicago, didn't
- 24:29Speaker 1: go well, and now he has been sent out.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean that's crazy timing if you think
- 24:38Speaker 2: about it, because Woods Richardson like by default, probably would
- 24:43Speaker 2: have gone back into the rotation. He so he comes
- 24:47Speaker 2: in on Thursday in the series finale in Chicago when
- 24:52Speaker 2: kend Rojas got scratched and was not good and looked
- 24:55Speaker 2: a lot like he had as a starter, and they,
- 24:59Speaker 2: you know, because of where they were, they just they
- 25:01Speaker 2: needed the fresh bodies and they defaid him. And and look,
- 25:05Speaker 2: I'll say this, Simon Woods Richardson probably for a month
- 25:10Speaker 2: needed to go to Triple A and and sort things
- 25:13Speaker 2: out because there were no easy answers. He was not
- 25:16Speaker 2: like asking him about his path back to being good
- 25:18Speaker 2: he said, keep doing the same thing and things will turn.
- 25:22Speaker 2: And at that point, his splitter was the worst pitch
- 25:24Speaker 2: in baseball and his slider was tied for the worst
- 25:27Speaker 2: slider in baseball. Like, there's things that need to be
- 25:30Speaker 2: ironed out there, and honestly, he needs a reset and
- 25:33Speaker 2: it can work, and there's the stuff is there because
- 25:35Speaker 2: we saw it out of the bullpen a couple of times.
- 25:37Speaker 2: He looked good in those two bullpen outings. But there
- 25:41Speaker 2: just was no room to hide him when you're looking
- 25:43Speaker 2: to pitch him at most every three days, when you're
- 25:47Speaker 2: needing the workload, and but Bailey over goes down a
- 25:51Speaker 2: day later, and you know, so sim got dfad Friday
- 25:56Speaker 2: Bailey or dfaid after Friday, I believe, Yeah, it was.
- 26:00Speaker 2: It was Saturday morning that they announced it. Bailey gets
- 26:03Speaker 2: injured in the game that late afternoon, and I mean
- 26:07Speaker 2: a day later. If they knew that, I think the
- 26:11Speaker 2: Twins might have just hung on to him because at
- 26:14Speaker 2: the worst, he can give you length and wear it
- 26:17Speaker 2: even though you know he's got a struggle and here
- 26:21Speaker 2: they are where they could absolutely use him right now.
- 26:23Speaker 2: But that's just how it works sometimes. It is insane
- 26:27Speaker 2: how it works that just like essentially the move. I'm
- 26:31Speaker 2: sure they told him after the game Friday night, but
- 26:35Speaker 2: they announced it on Saturday morning, and not ten hours later,
- 26:39Speaker 2: Bailey over felt some stiffness in his elbow and said
- 26:43Speaker 2: there was no pain, but it was stiff and he
- 26:45Speaker 2: thinks there's just fluid there. We'll know more later today.
- 26:49Speaker 2: But that's insane because I don't know what the Twins
- 26:53Speaker 2: are really gonna do right now. I mean it is
- 26:55Speaker 2: they're gonna You know, they have a Sean Gallagher who pitched.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Is it shawner Is or Ryan Gallagher? I just say
- 27:04Speaker 2: it's Ryan Gallagher who they acquired. They acquired him in
- 27:10Speaker 2: the Willie Castro trade last year and he's been at
- 27:13Speaker 2: Triple A and his last outing was good after a
- 27:16Speaker 2: little bit of a rough run. Is he the guy?
- 27:19Speaker 2: I don't know?
- 27:20Speaker 5: I didn't Mike Paradiso, Mike, Yeah, Mike parades even though
- 27:25Speaker 5: he's a San Diego State guy, wasn't on my radar
- 27:29Speaker 5: until about three days ago and I heard the name
- 27:33Speaker 5: and hid a nice strikeout total.
- 27:35Speaker 2: But it's at this point it's those kind of guys
- 27:39Speaker 2: who who's coming up? We don't know? And uh, it's
- 27:43Speaker 2: funny how it works like that, because Simeon Wood's Richardson
- 27:45Speaker 2: probably could still be eating innings. But I will say,
- 27:49Speaker 2: I mean, look, this was a move that was a
- 27:51Speaker 2: long time in the in the works because he's really
- 27:56Speaker 2: it's felt like he has like he was struggling for
- 28:00Speaker 2: answers the whole time. It really did not feel like
- 28:02Speaker 2: he was, you know, working with his best stuff. And
- 28:06Speaker 2: we saw his best a couple of times out of
- 28:09Speaker 2: the pen, but that was in shorter spurts, and I
- 28:12Speaker 2: think he needed to get some confidence built up and
- 28:14Speaker 2: they had to force him into action on Thursday. It's
- 28:17Speaker 2: unfair how it works out like that sometimes. But you know,
- 28:21Speaker 2: then you get you get injuries piling up, and all
- 28:23Speaker 2: of a sudden you're DFA and it's crazy. Yeah.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Well, in the immediate short term, as the Twins return
- 28:31Speaker 1: home tonight against the White Sox, it's Joe Ryan Connor,
- 28:34Speaker 1: Prelips scheduled for Tuesday, toadj Bradley for Wednesday. Tyler, when
- 28:39Speaker 1: you're struggling like this and you've got your ace going
- 28:41Speaker 1: on the hill, does it feel is it a relief?
- 28:43Speaker 1: Is it more pressure? A little of both?
- 28:46Speaker 3: Uh, It's definitely for most, it's probably a little bit
- 28:49Speaker 3: of a relief.
- 28:50Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:51Speaker 3: It's like, all right, we know we're gonna get something
- 28:54Speaker 3: of note tonight out of Joe. You know, it's it
- 28:58Speaker 3: is back, I guess is it back to back for
- 29:00Speaker 3: him against the White Sox, so they'll see him, you know, twice,
- 29:03Speaker 3: you know, within the span of a week, which is
- 29:05Speaker 3: never the best. Like it happened to me a lot
- 29:08Speaker 3: with Cleveland, and it's like, man, I just face these guys,
- 29:11Speaker 3: you know, and you start to think, do I repeat
- 29:13Speaker 3: the same plan or mix it up a little bit?
- 29:17Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, like Joe's got
- 29:19Speaker 3: unique stuff you know that plays, and he's going to
- 29:22Speaker 3: show up ready to go. You know, that's the beauty
- 29:24Speaker 3: of being a starter, Like you know, it's your day.
- 29:27Speaker 3: You know, you can kind of try to separate it,
- 29:30Speaker 3: you know, as as he's pretty good at doing it.
- 29:32Speaker 3: You know, he's got it. He's in his own world
- 29:34Speaker 3: when he's out there, and so hopefully he can early
- 29:38Speaker 3: and give even the lineup can feel that energy when
- 29:41Speaker 3: when a starter is on a roll, you know, and
- 29:44Speaker 3: get to the guy who got us last week, that's
- 29:46Speaker 3: gonna be the big thing. You got to get to him,
- 29:49Speaker 3: get get into the White Sox bullpen, whoever's out there.
- 29:51Speaker 3: But you know when Joe's on the mound that the
- 29:54Speaker 3: whole clubhouse definitely is probably at ease, and you know
- 29:58Speaker 3: it is pressure. You lose five straight, like you need
- 30:00Speaker 3: one bad, but you can't go into the game thinking
- 30:04Speaker 3: that way. That's when you start squeezing that bat a
- 30:05Speaker 3: little tighter, you know, overthinking a pitch selection, whatever it
- 30:08Speaker 3: may be. But you know when your best guy's going,
- 30:12Speaker 3: you know, like I've talked about Santanarios or picked the
- 30:15Speaker 3: guy in the past, Like you can kind of roll
- 30:17Speaker 3: out of bed and know you're getting six innings tonight,
- 30:19Speaker 3: one or two runs. You know, you just got to
- 30:21Speaker 3: score more than the other team tonight, and that's all
- 30:23Speaker 3: you got to think about doing.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Facing David Sandlin again second time in a week, as
- 30:28Speaker 1: we mentioned, his second career start, obviously guessing the Twins
- 30:32Speaker 1: didn't know a lot about him beforehand and are sort
- 30:34Speaker 1: of experiencing him for the first time. What changes when
- 30:37Speaker 1: you're when you're seeing a picture for a second time
- 30:40Speaker 1: after you didn't really have much information on them before.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Yeah, especially the rookie like that, Like guys are getting
- 30:46Speaker 3: their eyes on him for the first time. You know,
- 30:48Speaker 3: you can watch video stuff like that, but until you
- 30:51Speaker 3: get in the box and see the arm angle, see
- 30:53Speaker 3: the movement. I don't know what his particular mix is,
- 30:57Speaker 3: whether he's got a good, you know, hoppy heater sinker,
- 30:59Speaker 3: you know, he's got different off speed stuff, but getting
- 31:02Speaker 3: eyes on a guy. Obviously Buck had no issue adapting
- 31:05Speaker 3: to him pretty quickly, but otherwise you just got to
- 31:09Speaker 3: see him. And now, especially for a rookie like that,
- 31:11Speaker 3: he's going to be seeing guys for the second time
- 31:14Speaker 3: ever and these hitters have now seen him, and that's
- 31:16Speaker 3: the the one. It's does it creep into his head
- 31:19Speaker 3: a little bit to change something or do they have
- 31:22Speaker 3: you know, their meeting they're like, hey, man, do exactly
- 31:24Speaker 3: what you did last week. It's gonna work. You know,
- 31:27Speaker 3: it's it's the one you can the what is it
- 31:29Speaker 3: the end of paralysis by analysis? You know, that's where
- 31:32Speaker 3: that creeps in, Like you start trying to do something
- 31:34Speaker 3: different when you don't need to, and then you get
- 31:36Speaker 3: down the rabbit hole. You know, it's it's just go
- 31:39Speaker 3: play ball. But for our hitter will be huge. For
- 31:43Speaker 3: for our guys, they've they've got the fresh look at him.
- 31:45Speaker 3: You know, it's less than a week ago. Go right
- 31:48Speaker 3: back to it, and then just get him early, get
- 31:51Speaker 3: him out of the game, get to him early. You know,
- 31:53Speaker 3: don't let them go no hits for six innings. You know,
- 31:56Speaker 3: that's that's always a good start, you know, just getting
- 31:58Speaker 3: on base, it's always the place to start. So, you know,
- 32:02Speaker 3: jump on him early. I think that's the best thing
- 32:03Speaker 3: you can do. Get him rattled. He's young, you know,
- 32:06Speaker 3: get that pressure on him, and then, uh, you know,
- 32:09Speaker 3: make some stuff happen.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Davis Martin is the White Sox picture on Tuesday. Who's
- 32:17Speaker 1: up on Wednesday? I had it and I lost it.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Martin's really good Martin.
- 32:25Speaker 1: We'll keep it tires.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Uh.
- 32:26Speaker 1: It's a seven game homestand three with the White Sox,
- 32:29Speaker 1: four with the Royals. An important one for the Twins
- 32:33Speaker 1: as they're starting to slip back a bit in both
- 32:35Speaker 1: the wild Card race and the Al Central and then
- 32:38Speaker 1: after that a day off and three at Detroit. So
- 32:41Speaker 1: ten straight Divisional games here for the Twins Division, Tag
- 32:46Speaker 1: Stretch Division coming up. We will be getting back with
- 32:48Speaker 1: you later this week. Uh, probably right before the White
- 32:52Speaker 1: Sox series wraps. Wednesday afternoon again. If you like what
- 32:55Speaker 1: you hear, please toss us a like, a subscribe, leave

- 33:08Speaker 1: We will catch you next time here on Twin Cities.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Territory, whatever the hell that is.
- 33:13Speaker 1: One more time. Thanks everybody, Bye bye. We'll catch you
- 33:15Speaker 1: next time.
