- 1:23Speaker 1: All Right, We're going to go out to the plai's
- 1:25Speaker 1: fund Center phone line and visit with Kurt Bodenhausen of Sportico.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Kurt has been our go to guy for years and
- 1:33Speaker 1: years when it comes to the business of sports. Kurt,
- 1:38Speaker 1: before I start talking about general things, what in the
- 1:41Speaker 1: world has happened to the value of these sports franchises
- 1:46Speaker 1: the last couple of years. It seems like they've gone crazy.
- 1:51Speaker 5: I bet chip last week was one of the craziest
- 1:54Speaker 5: weeks of sports business stories I can ever remember. Starting
- 1:58Speaker 5: the Lakers thing yep again Top top top five most
- 2:02Speaker 5: stunning business story since I've been doing this over the
- 2:05Speaker 5: last thirty years. But think about last week. You had
- 2:08Speaker 5: Apollo invest two point six billion dollars into the New
- 2:12Speaker 5: York Yankees. We came out with our NFL valuations that
- 2:18Speaker 5: had the average team up three point thirty one percent
- 2:21Speaker 5: to nine point three four billion dollars. Cowboys on top.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Fifteen point five hours later, Ramona Shellburn great scoop which
- 2:30Speaker 5: we almost had at Sportico, but she beat us to it,
- 2:34Speaker 5: twelve point five billion dollars for the Lakers. And then
- 2:36Speaker 5: Friday we get just you know, regular story, Jeff Bezos
- 2:40Speaker 5: part of the consortium investing in Liverpool at a seven
- 2:44Speaker 5: plus billion dollar valuation. Like this is like a crazy
- 2:48Speaker 5: collection of individual investors, gigantic financial firms investing and buying
- 2:56Speaker 5: outright some of the biggest sports assets on the planet.
- 3:01Speaker 5: What just a wild week? And what.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Has driven the market? What has made these franchises so
- 3:10Speaker 1: much more valuable?
- 3:14Speaker 5: That's a good question. There's a few things going on here.
- 3:18Speaker 5: One is the introduction of private equity, so that that
- 3:22Speaker 5: has helped things on the margin. A big part of
- 3:25Speaker 5: this is you have had a massive wealth creation over
- 3:29Speaker 5: the last fifteen years. If you look at the number
- 3:32Speaker 5: of global billionaires, including mega mega billionaires, people with twenty
- 3:38Speaker 5: thirty two hundred billion dollars that you know, but fifteen
- 3:46Speaker 5: years ago that group was you know, Warn Buffett and
- 3:48Speaker 5: Bill Gates. Yeah, just those two by themselves. But you
- 3:52Speaker 5: have a whole new crop of people that have generated
- 3:54Speaker 5: fabulous wealth as well as a group of people that
- 3:57Speaker 5: have generated like a decent amount of wealth like fire
- 4:01Speaker 5: five hundred million, eight hundred million. They can't invest, they
- 4:05Speaker 5: can't buy an NFL team in or put or buy
- 4:08Speaker 5: an NBA team, but they have you know, they want
- 4:11Speaker 5: to invest one hundred and fifty million dollars into their
- 4:14Speaker 5: local NFL team or something so that they can The
- 4:18Speaker 5: new model in the NFL. I think you will see
- 4:20Speaker 5: moving forward is even with even if it's the megawealth
- 4:23Speaker 5: that's been created, you will see consortiums of people buying teams,
- 4:27Speaker 5: like with the Washington Commanders, with Josh Harris, like likely
- 4:30Speaker 5: is what is happy in Seattle. And there's a few
- 4:33Speaker 5: things going on here. People recognizing that this is the
- 4:38Speaker 5: last place for people to advertise. Live TV is the
- 4:43Speaker 5: only place left really for advertising dollars to be directed
- 4:47Speaker 5: in the media or broadcast media. So that has helped
- 4:53Speaker 5: suck up like basically so much of the money from TV,
- 4:57Speaker 5: from ESPNS, the Foxes, CBS is. With the NFL and
- 5:01Speaker 5: NBA sitting at the top of this catpertcy, a lot
- 5:05Speaker 5: of people look at us in as in anti AI
- 5:09Speaker 5: play as AI just you know, wipes out so many
- 5:16Speaker 5: basic industries. It's not going to wipe out sports.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 5: And you know, if you think about the turnover in
- 5:26Speaker 5: companies these days, you know, the companies that are in
- 5:29Speaker 5: the s and P five hundred, like, think through that
- 5:32Speaker 5: list of companies, who's going to be around in twenty
- 5:35Speaker 5: five years, either they're going to be put out of
- 5:37Speaker 5: business or bought up by somebody else. And so I
- 5:42Speaker 5: can tell you with near certainty the New York Yankees
- 5:46Speaker 5: are going to be here in twenty five years. Yeah,
- 5:48Speaker 5: the Dallas Cowboys are going to be here in twenty
- 5:50Speaker 5: five years. So with everything happening in AI, people look
- 5:57Speaker 5: at live entertainment as like one of the last bastions
- 6:01Speaker 5: that can can use AI to help on the fringes
- 6:04Speaker 5: of it. But it's still going to be around here
- 6:07Speaker 5: and is not going to be wiped out. So and
- 6:10Speaker 5: these these teams have become more profitable, I mean, excluding
- 6:13Speaker 5: European soccer, which is still just all ready the teams money.
- 6:18Speaker 5: But in the North American sports leagues have become more
- 6:21Speaker 5: profitable as the collective bargaining agreements have become more owner friendly.
- 6:26Speaker 5: So there's all a slew of things at play here
- 6:28Speaker 5: that are driving valuations where teams sold. You know, in
- 6:33Speaker 5: twenty ten, if you look back to all the NBA
- 6:37Speaker 5: deals and went back then, did the Warrior sell for
- 6:41Speaker 5: a record four hundred and fifty million dollars. Teams were
- 6:43Speaker 5: selling for three times revenue. Now you're seeing the Lakers
- 6:47Speaker 5: sell for twenty times revenue. So it's a it's a
- 6:51Speaker 5: they're just they're being valued at dramatically higher prices.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So you mentioned the Lakers deal and one of the
- 7:00Speaker 1: five deals that you've seen in your career. What was
- 7:05Speaker 1: what was the reaction when the figure came out that
- 7:08Speaker 1: it was going to be like twelve and a half
- 7:11Speaker 1: billion dollars.
- 7:14Speaker 5: The figure there. Honestly, the figure surprised me less just
- 7:18Speaker 5: than the actual Yeah, that it happened so quickly. I
- 7:23Speaker 5: mean Mark Walter closed this deal last year in October
- 7:27Speaker 5: to turn around and sell it. And obviously he's been
- 7:30Speaker 5: in the news, yes, with the reporting that's over the
- 7:34Speaker 5: last few months in terms of Guggenheim and some of
- 7:37Speaker 5: the loans and how they were marked, and just this
- 7:43Speaker 5: obviously indicated that there's more going on here because he's
- 7:48Speaker 5: not the type of guy to just flip an asset
- 7:51Speaker 5: like this to make a quick buck. That's that clearly
- 7:55Speaker 5: was not the intention when they bought this team. So
- 7:59Speaker 5: to be up twenty five percent over the last twelve months, oddslie,
- 8:02Speaker 5: that's just what's happening in the marketplace. I mentioned our
- 8:05Speaker 5: valuations in the NFL up thirty one percent. When we
- 8:08Speaker 5: did our NBA valuations, they were up twenty percent last
- 8:11Speaker 5: year on average, So twenty five percent higher over a year.
- 8:15Speaker 5: That's kind of what the market's been doing. It's just
- 8:18Speaker 5: it's it's just it's just wild the year over year
- 8:22Speaker 5: growth that we've seen in these sports assets.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I mean, the NFL is still the beast in the group.
- 8:29Speaker 1: According to your list, there's two baseball teams Yankees and Dodgers,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and three NBA teams in the top thirty five sports values. Yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 1: the rest are NFL.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Right, The rest of the NFL. I mean, we looked
- 8:49Speaker 5: at one of the most incredible things when we landed
- 8:52Speaker 5: our final numbers. So we had the Cincinnati Bengals. Yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 5: they've been last in all seven iterations of support of
- 8:58Speaker 5: coos NFL valuations this year that meant seven point four
- 9:01Speaker 5: billion dollars. The five teams you just mentioned and Real
- 9:06Speaker 5: Madrid arguably the biggest brand sports team brand in the world,
- 9:10Speaker 5: those are the only teams in the world worth more
- 9:13Speaker 5: than the Bengals as far as we're concerned like that,
- 9:17Speaker 5: I mean, if you I mean, I'm Real Madrid fans,
- 9:21Speaker 5: you know, would lose their mind the idea that or
- 9:25Speaker 5: maybe more so Barcelona fans probably lose their mind the
- 9:28Speaker 5: idea that the worst NFL team is worth more than
- 9:33Speaker 5: a club like Barcelona with hundreds of millions of fans
- 9:38Speaker 5: around the world. So it's the NFL is just operating
- 9:42Speaker 5: on a totally different level. Yeah, like one hundred and
- 9:46Speaker 5: twenty five billion dollars worth of TV contracts that again
- 9:49Speaker 5: are going to get ripped up and redone because they
- 9:52Speaker 5: don't pay out enough. As far as the where the
- 9:55Speaker 5: NFL sits in the media landscape, terrific CBA, where owners
- 10:00Speaker 5: are guaranteed to make money. Who teams last year received
- 10:04Speaker 5: more than four hundred Each team got more than four
- 10:07Speaker 5: hundred and fifty million dollars from the league office from
- 10:10Speaker 5: those TV deals and the league sponsorship deals, and the
- 10:13Speaker 5: cap was I can't remember the exact number, two eighty broke.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I mean, if seventy million dollars the benefits on top
- 10:21Speaker 5: of that, you gotta pay. But I mean still you're
- 10:25Speaker 5: you're guaranteed to make money in the NFL and those
- 10:29Speaker 5: big market teams, you know, the Rams, the Eagles, the Patriots,
- 10:35Speaker 5: they're all making two hundred million dollars and then they
- 10:37Speaker 5: and then the Cowboys on a whole different level, making
- 10:39Speaker 5: five hundred million dollars a year. So the Cowboys. There
- 10:42Speaker 5: aren't a lot of sports teams where you could look
- 10:44Speaker 5: at them at from a business standpoint and be like, okay, yeah, no,
- 10:47Speaker 5: that makes sense in terms of the cash flow they
- 10:49Speaker 5: kick off. Most teams are, you know, fifty one hundred,
- 10:52Speaker 5: two hundred times they're cash flow, but the Cowboys are
- 10:56Speaker 5: about thirty times cash flow. So that's a good business.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it doesn't appear that winning or losing has a
- 11:04Speaker 1: lot of effect on the value of these franchises.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Kurt, Well, you're bringing up the Cowboys there.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I mean, I'm looking at the Cowboys, I'm looking at
- 11:14Speaker 1: the Giants, I'm looking at the Jets, I'm looking at
- 11:17Speaker 1: the Dolphins. They're all in the top seven. I mean,
- 11:20Speaker 1: it doesn't seem to matter.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Yeah, And until this year, Knick fans would would point
- 11:27Speaker 5: that out every year too, during their twenty year run
- 11:29Speaker 5: when they were off until the Warriors rise, the Knicks
- 11:33Speaker 5: were the most valuable NBA team for a couple decades
- 11:39Speaker 5: and weren't exactly killing it on the court. The NFL,
- 11:45Speaker 5: in particular, seventeen game season big market teams, it's you know,
- 11:52Speaker 5: every year you sell hope. Yeah, this isn't baseball. You
- 11:56Speaker 5: got to fill one hundred, you got to fill eighty
- 11:58Speaker 5: one home games with a and all these teams are
- 12:01Speaker 5: sold out. Almost all these teams are sold out every
- 12:06Speaker 5: single game. Now, do they show up in December when
- 12:11Speaker 5: the Jets are three and ten and playing.
- 12:13Speaker 9: Out the.
- 12:15Speaker 5: Just running out, running the course on the season. No,
- 12:18Speaker 5: not necessarily, but those tickets are all sold already, and
- 12:21Speaker 5: the sponsorships are all sold and the suites are all sold.
- 12:25Speaker 5: So it's the NFL. Listen winning helps. And we've talked
- 12:31Speaker 5: to Steven and Jerry Jones about this over the years
- 12:33Speaker 5: and and they've said, you know, even though their local revenue,
- 12:37Speaker 5: their local revenue seventy percent higher than the Rams who
- 12:40Speaker 5: ranked second. And Stephen Jones once sold me he said,
- 12:45Speaker 5: if we could, you know, figure it out and do
- 12:48Speaker 5: it on the field and win a Super Bowl. He
- 12:50Speaker 5: said that he thinks that bumps their local revenue fifty
- 12:54Speaker 5: so they are leaving money on the table. It could
- 12:56Speaker 5: be better. But from a valuation standpoint, the NFL is
- 13:03Speaker 5: so unique because these assets rarely sold. I mean you
- 13:06Speaker 5: bring up the Giants that have been owned by the
- 13:08Speaker 5: Mara family for over one hundred years. The Tish family
- 13:12Speaker 5: bought in back in I think nineteen May nineteen ninety,
- 13:16Speaker 5: nineteen ninety one, but it's been the Mara family for
- 13:20Speaker 5: over one hundred years. The Kraft families owned the Patriots.
- 13:25Speaker 5: We're going on forty something years. The average ownership tenure
- 13:29Speaker 5: in the NFL is more than forty years. So if
- 13:34Speaker 5: you want to buy an NFL team, particularly one in
- 13:38Speaker 5: your local market, like you got one shot.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 5: And so if a team like the Giants came up
- 13:44Speaker 5: for sale in the New York area. With all of
- 13:47Speaker 5: the wealth in this area, you would have a bidding
- 13:51Speaker 5: war breakout, and you would have prices just go through
- 13:55Speaker 5: the roof. Even though they've been struggling on the field
- 13:58Speaker 5: for most of the decade.
- 14:01Speaker 1: It used to be that a new stadium would would
- 14:05Speaker 1: affect drastically the cost of the franchise. I'm looking at
- 14:11Speaker 1: Buffalo and they're up one spot from a year ago.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Now there's been some negative things said about the new stadium,
- 14:21Speaker 1: and then I'm looking at Chicago and they're down three,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and I'm just that's just a wild guess that it's
- 14:28Speaker 1: just all of the uncertainty surrounding a new stadium in Chicago.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, the stadium still plays a huge part. So
- 14:36Speaker 5: Buffalo is only up one spot this year. But as
- 14:38Speaker 5: this stadiums approved and financed and built, Buffalo has shot
- 14:45Speaker 5: up from the very bottom of the list down there
- 14:48Speaker 5: with Cincinnati in New Orleans, and so they've moved up
- 14:53Speaker 5: significantly because of their They've moved up by handful of spots.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Because of that, Chicago should be a top five franchise
- 15:02Speaker 5: and will be if they ever figure out the stadium situation.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Washington will be moving up the ranks as they their
- 15:12Speaker 5: stadium comes to fruition, which is supposed to open in
- 15:15Speaker 5: twenty thirty, so that that will totally change the financial
- 15:20Speaker 5: profile of the Commanders. I mean they're also spending nearly
- 15:24Speaker 5: four billion dollars to do it. But you only have
- 15:28Speaker 5: to look at the Rams, who playing in Saint Louis
- 15:33Speaker 5: was at the bottom quart tile of franchises. Moves to
- 15:36Speaker 5: La built a five billion dollars stadium, now second highest
- 15:41Speaker 5: most valuable team as far as we're concerned, behind the Cowboys.
- 15:46Speaker 5: So new stadium makes a big difference, still makes a
- 15:49Speaker 5: big difference in terms of from your valuation standpoint, but
- 15:53Speaker 5: it's getting very expensive.
- 15:56Speaker 6: To do.
- 15:58Speaker 5: But fortunately team I mean I think Buffalo's original stadium
- 16:04Speaker 5: costs was one point four billion. I'm not mistaken. The
- 16:10Speaker 5: early early projections in the city and counties and states
- 16:15Speaker 5: outlay was capped at eight hundred and fifty million dollars.
- 16:18Speaker 5: There's a lot of money, but ultimately the stadium and
- 16:22Speaker 5: am costing two point two billion dollars and the rest
- 16:24Speaker 5: of that falling on the team to fund. So small market,
- 16:29Speaker 5: small market teams like Buffalo, like Tennessee, which is gonna
- 16:33Speaker 5: open next year. They're still able to command pretty significant
- 16:37Speaker 5: public dollars. Team like the Bears, they're not getting any
- 16:43Speaker 5: public funding. Big market franchises or coastal cities typically are
- 16:50Speaker 5: are not getting any help building these stadiums.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Is there I'm looking at hockey and the most valuable
- 16:57Speaker 1: franchise is seventy fourth on your top one hundred list.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Is there a franchise out there, Kurt that if you
- 17:07Speaker 1: wanted to invest in and get the most bang for
- 17:10Speaker 1: your buck, you study this stuff. What would you buy?
- 17:18Speaker 5: That's a good question. I mean a few years ago
- 17:22Speaker 5: I was telling people you got to buy WMBA and
- 17:26Speaker 5: WSL teams. Those those Now those valuations are up you know,
- 17:32Speaker 5: five hundred six in some cases, so not not quite
- 17:38Speaker 5: the same screaming buy that they were a few years ago.
- 17:42Speaker 5: But I would say the place where you can still
- 17:46Speaker 5: find value, there's a ton of risk in it. The
- 17:50Speaker 5: value is in baseball. Okay, those those valuations have been
- 17:54Speaker 5: held back by the meltdown of the RSN model because
- 17:59Speaker 5: baseball teams are so reliant on those economics struggling because
- 18:04Speaker 5: of labor issues.
- 18:05Speaker 1: That's regional sports network.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yeah, sorry, Regional sports networks that MLB teams were very
- 18:14Speaker 5: reliant on those revenues, and as you've seen ballet sports
- 18:19Speaker 5: and the other iterations of ballet sports basically disappear, those
- 18:24Speaker 5: regional sports networks rights views have disappeared with them. So
- 18:31Speaker 5: right now baseball is valued at much lower multiples of
- 18:35Speaker 5: revenue than you see in the NBA, the NFL, and
- 18:38Speaker 5: the NBA. And you've had some people buy in early
- 18:42Speaker 5: on Sixth Street. Gigantic San Francisco investment firm bought ten
- 18:46Speaker 5: percent of the Giants. You've had people start to buy
- 18:51Speaker 5: in betting on baseball. Figuring out their labor problems might
- 18:56Speaker 5: require lockout, figuring out the TV situation once the national
- 19:01Speaker 5: deals expire at the end of twenty twenty eight. Baseball
- 19:04Speaker 5: wants to come to market in twenty twenty nine with
- 19:07Speaker 5: a combo of national and local rights that in theory
- 19:12Speaker 5: generates a lot more money than the previous deals do,
- 19:16Speaker 5: but also helps level the financial gap between the Dodgers
- 19:21Speaker 5: and Marlins of the world, because that's the other the
- 19:25Speaker 5: revenue disparities, the other massive problem that baseball is dealing with.
- 19:31Speaker 5: So baseball figures out those three things. You talk to
- 19:34Speaker 5: investors and bankers, they expect baseball teams to see a
- 19:38Speaker 5: significant step up in valuations to be more comparable to
- 19:45Speaker 5: NBA and NFL teams.
- 19:46Speaker 1: So if I'm going to buy the Rangers, now would
- 19:49Speaker 1: be a good time.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Now is a good time. But you need a significant
- 19:55Speaker 5: appetite for risk because next year, next year could be
- 19:59Speaker 5: a disag Yes, if you talk, if you look at
- 20:03Speaker 5: a season with you know, forty eighty, even a whole
- 20:07Speaker 5: season canceled.
- 20:08Speaker 1: That would be that would fitted perfectly with my investment portfolio.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Yes, what does that mean that for your franchise? Not
- 20:17Speaker 5: only did you have a really bad year? Did you?
- 20:22Speaker 5: Did you turn fans away? And now all these dreams
- 20:25Speaker 5: of figuring out how your media property works and you're
- 20:28Speaker 5: going to market with fans totally irate. Yes, because you're
- 20:32Speaker 5: going to want to start negotiating those TV contracts in
- 20:35Speaker 5: twenty twenty seven. You don't. You don't want to wait
- 20:37Speaker 5: till twenty twenty eight, necessarily. And so Baseball's got really
- 20:42Speaker 5: delicate dance and they have to be able to somehow
- 20:46Speaker 5: thread the needle and figure out because it's not just
- 20:50Speaker 5: players versus owners in baseball, right, because it is so different.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Teams are the top first teams at the bottom. So
- 20:56Speaker 5: you got to figure out what's the right agreement for
- 21:00Speaker 5: big market owners, small market owners, and players.
- 21:02Speaker 10: Uh.
- 21:03Speaker 5: You have to satisfy all and and the group in
- 21:05Speaker 5: the middle.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Uh.
- 21:06Speaker 5: There aren't just the payees or giant receivers of revenue sharing. So, UH,
- 21:12Speaker 5: you've got a lot of a lot of cooks in
- 21:15Speaker 5: the kitchen that that that are looking uh for what's
- 21:19Speaker 5: in the best interests of their franchise.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Kur Budenhousen rights for Sportico.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Uh.
- 21:25Speaker 1: What are you guys going to do your college valuations? Kurt?
- 21:31Speaker 5: So that's a good question. We've been thinking about it.
- 21:33Speaker 5: But you can find a couple of them out there.
- 21:35Speaker 5: The Athletic and CNBC have both done them in some way.
- 21:39Speaker 5: In some ways, those valuations are are easy ish because
- 21:43Speaker 5: you know the revenue basically for all the for all
- 21:45Speaker 5: the the total athletic department, and then then then the
- 21:49Speaker 5: football teams, and then you put them. They both put
- 21:52Speaker 5: multiples of revenue on it.
- 21:54Speaker 9: Uh.
- 21:54Speaker 5: The problem is, obviously we haven't seen any deals where
- 21:58Speaker 5: where these things are sold and and there's no scenario
- 22:01Speaker 5: where Notre Dame is going to be sold. And we've
- 22:06Speaker 5: been figuring they investors have been looking at these schools
- 22:11Speaker 5: for the last few years, private equity firms, and we wrote,
- 22:16Speaker 5: you know, when the initial conversations between Sixth Street and
- 22:18Speaker 5: Florida State, which were we broke a bunch of stories
- 22:22Speaker 5: around that, and Florida State hired JP Morgan. Nothing came
- 22:26Speaker 5: to nothing came to fruition. But you know what these
- 22:30Speaker 5: deals look like, nobody's quite sure. And OTRO ultimately did
- 22:35Speaker 5: a deal with University of Utah. And so it's what
- 22:42Speaker 5: they have evolved in terms of how they want to
- 22:45Speaker 5: do these deals where they look more like instead of
- 22:48Speaker 5: I'm buying a piece of this, it's basically a credit
- 22:52Speaker 5: deal where I'm loaning money to this either school or
- 22:57Speaker 5: conference in the case of the Big Twelve. But you're
- 23:00Speaker 5: seeing the Big twelve schools aren't taking the money right
- 23:04Speaker 5: because you know it's obviously if you take the money, though,
- 23:08Speaker 5: you know you've got to be able to pay back.
- 23:11Speaker 5: And so it's the college space is still so murky
- 23:16Speaker 5: right now. You don't know if you're going to have
- 23:18Speaker 5: to pay your football players twenty million a year or
- 23:20Speaker 5: fifty million a year. There's you know, you've got bills
- 23:24Speaker 5: before Congress, and but you know, leaning on Congress to
- 23:28Speaker 5: try to figure out your organization maybe isn't always the
- 23:32Speaker 5: best play. So uh, but there's there's no two ways
- 23:38Speaker 5: about it. Football in particular is college football is massive
- 23:44Speaker 5: revenue generators. You look at what Fox and CBS and
- 23:49Speaker 5: ABC are doing, uh with TV. They're putting more and
- 23:53Speaker 5: more games on TV in prime time and then during
- 23:57Speaker 5: the day because they that is where the audience is.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Go look back to what we talked about in the
- 24:01Speaker 5: beginning why these franchises are so valuable because people watch
- 24:05Speaker 5: sports and they watch it live. So that's you see
- 24:10Speaker 5: more and more programming on TV and these whether it's
- 24:15Speaker 5: college or pro space. Again, you still want to create
- 24:21Speaker 5: a level of scarcity where these things feel like a
- 24:25Speaker 5: big deal that you're watching. The part of the NFL's
- 24:29Speaker 5: beauty is, you know, you get to watch your local
- 24:31Speaker 5: team and then a handful of other big national games
- 24:35Speaker 5: well as the NFL has proliferated to be on Thursday
- 24:39Speaker 5: nights and Monday night for a long time, but now
- 24:43Speaker 5: we're doing some games on Saturday. And again, if college
- 24:49Speaker 5: can't figure their stuff out, you might see a lot
- 24:53Speaker 5: more NFL games on Saturday so is it still feel
- 24:59Speaker 5: as is every NFL game still feels important to tune
- 25:02Speaker 5: in and watch if you can just watch them all
- 25:04Speaker 5: the time. Right, Maybe I don't know, seven million people
- 25:07Speaker 5: watch the preseason Hall of Fame game is all backups
- 25:12Speaker 5: and nobody can name anybody on the field. So you know,
- 25:16Speaker 5: you can thank fantasy sports, fantasy football, and gambling for
- 25:20Speaker 5: a big portion of people tuning in to watch the
- 25:23Speaker 5: most random games possible.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Kurt, I always appreciate the knowledge. Thank you so much.
- 25:29Speaker 1: You can read Kurt Bodenhausen at Sportico. Thank you, Kurt.
- 25:33Speaker 5: Thanks Chip. Great to catch up all.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Right, My thanks to Kurt Bodenhausen from Sportico, formerly of Forbes.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Kurt has been our go to guy when we talk
- 25:44Speaker 1: about money in sports, which we unfortunately do more than
- 25:50Speaker 1: ever before. But he knows his stuff. It's just crazy
- 25:55Speaker 1: the amount of money they're getting for these franchises right

- 28:22Speaker 9: It's still hard to read some of it. And every
- 28:25Speaker 9: time I see the documentary, which is only I've only

- 31:47Speaker 1: Hayden Pantieri's autopsy a day after her death at the
- 31:51Speaker 1: age of thirty six. Corner Mike Ellis said there were
- 31:54Speaker 1: no signs of trauma found that would contribute to her death.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Details will be announced amidst an active and ongoing investigation.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Entertainment Weekly says that Ellis indicates the first responders found
- 32:14Speaker 1: her unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at one in the afternoon,
- 32:22Speaker 1: following a nine to one to one call for assistance
- 32:27Speaker 1: at the Judson Mill Lofts, where she had been temporarily staying.

- 32:59Speaker 1: and you know that's ongoing. She was called struggling and
- 33:08Speaker 1: really lonely by the co star of her latest movie, Sleepwalker.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Justin Chatwin was a co star. He told people that
- 33:18Speaker 1: they had grown close while filming last year, saying, I
- 33:24Speaker 1: really like spending time with her because she took off
- 33:27Speaker 1: and she was authentic with me about her life. She
- 33:30Speaker 1: opened up about her struggles with addiction. He met Panterea
- 33:36Speaker 1: while they were starring in the movie Heroes Reconnected through Sleepwalker,
- 33:41Speaker 1: which is a psychological thriller. Justin telling people that he
- 33:47Speaker 1: could tell she was struggling. I was like, I don't
- 33:51Speaker 1: think it's this movie. There's a handful of women that
- 33:54Speaker 1: I've really liked, and I really loved working with her,
- 33:58Speaker 1: but I know she was really lonely. Hayden seemed different
- 34:02Speaker 1: when I met her this time than when I met
- 34:04Speaker 1: her in the early years. I've been sober fifteen years.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I know the world of addiction in Hollywood, and it
- 34:11Speaker 1: takes from your youth. She was married at one time

- 34:40Speaker 1: Klitchkow wrote, our families going through a time of profound
- 34:43Speaker 1: shock and grief. The announcement of her tragic death saddens
- 34:48Speaker 1: me deeply. She left this world far too soon. Klitchkow
- 34:54Speaker 1: has full custody of Kaya. She built an incredible career
- 35:02Speaker 1: through immense talent while also facing the darker sides of
- 35:06Speaker 1: a very demanding industry, said klitchko. I don't know if

- 43:00Speaker 1: she became the very last person on the planet to

- 43:09Speaker 1: podcast is an extension of What i've been doing on
- 43:13Speaker 1: the show all these. YEARS i just realized that the
- 43:18Speaker 1: times and the culture continues to move forward in a
- 43:20Speaker 1: way that people are still seeking meaning and depth of

- 45:06Speaker 1: Again it may not sound like, it but we're. Trying we're.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Trying America's Got. Talent Judge Howie mandel doesn't know which
- 45:21Speaker 1: act will win the million dollars this. YEAR i usually
