- 0:09faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium
- 0:11for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 28, 1968.
- 0:15Managed by Mayo Smith, the Tigers were off to
- 0:18a hot start with a 10 -4 record, looking to continue
- 0:21their success after falling just one game short
- 0:23of the AL pennant in 1967. The Yankees were looking
- 0:27to rebound from three consecutive losing seasons.
- 0:30the first time that had happened to them since
- 0:311915. In Game 1 of the doubleheader, the Tigers
- 0:35sent Joe Sparma to the mound to face the Yankees'
- 0:38Bill Monbouquet. This audio recording is from
- 0:40the New York Radio Broadcast, featuring announcers
- 0:43Jerry Coleman, Phil Rizzuto, and Frank Messer.

- 1:27extra flavor and mildness. Remember, you get
- 1:30a lot more from a White Owl than just smoke.
- 1:40And now with today's game, Jerry Coleman and
- 1:43Phil Rizzuto and Frank Messer. Here's Jerry.
- 1:45Look at the standings in the American League.
- 1:47Detroit leading the league with a 10 -3 mark.
- 1:50They're a game and a half ahead of Minnesota.
- 1:53Two ahead of Baltimore and Washington. Two and
- 1:55a half in front of the Red Sox. The Yankees in
- 1:58sixth place. They're even up at 500. Seven and
- 2:02seven. They're three and a half back. Followed
- 2:04by Oakland, Cleveland, California. And the White
- 2:07Sox, with a record of 1 -11, are 8 .5 games down.
- 2:12Over in the National League, the Cardinals, who
- 2:14won it last year, have put a little daylight
- 2:16between themselves and San Francisco. They lead
- 2:19the league by 2 .5 games over the Giants. The
- 2:22Cardinals with an 11 -4 mark, the Giants 8 -6.
- 2:26Three back are the L .A. Dodgers, and then comes
- 2:29Cincinnati, 3 .5 down. The Braves, the Phillies,
- 2:34the Pirates, and the Astros all four games back.
- 2:36Four and a half behind are the Chicago Cubs in
- 2:40ninth place, and bringing up the rear, the New
- 2:42York Mets five and a half out. We mentioned that
- 2:49Tommy Phoebus pitched that no -hitter yesterday
- 2:53when the Orioles beat the Red Sox six to nothing,
- 2:56and he picked a pretty tough ball club to pitch
- 2:59a no -hitter against. And there was only one
- 3:02real questionable play. That was in the third
- 3:05inning when Andrews, Mike Andrews, hit a ball
- 3:10that tipped Phoebus' glove and dribbled out towards
- 3:13short. Belangia came up with the ball, fired
- 3:16the first. Bill Valentine, a plate umpire, called
- 3:19Andrews out, and Andrews argued so strongly on
- 3:23the play that he was ejected from the game. But
- 3:26this happened in the third inning, and of course
- 3:28at that time there was... No thought in anyone's
- 3:30mind that there might be a potential no -hitter
- 3:32in the making. As it turned out, that was the
- 3:34turning point in the ballgame for young Tommy
- 3:37Phoebus. Brooks Robinson made a great catch off
- 3:42a line drive from the bat of Rico Petrucelli,
- 3:46a diving, stabbing backhander. And, of course,
- 3:50that helped the cause a little bit. So we're
- 3:53waiting now for the Yankees to take the field,
- 3:55and while we do, let's take a look at the lineup
- 3:57today in the American League. Cleveland and the
- 3:59Senators are playing a doubleheader. They're
- 4:01playing in Washington. Williams against Ortega
- 4:04in the first game. Boston and Baltimore are a
- 4:06doubleheader. They're playing at Baltimore as
- 4:09the Yankees take the field here at the stadium.
- 4:12Single game between the White Sox and the Twins
- 4:14in Minnesota. Oakland and California also a single
- 4:18game. In the National League, the Mets and Cincinnati
- 4:21are playing a single contest. Houston and the
- 4:24Cubs, the doubleheader. Philadelphia at Atlanta
- 4:27will play a single ball game. In other action,
- 4:31Pittsburgh at St. Louis, L .A. at San Francisco,
- 4:33single ball games. Right now, the people here
- 4:39at Yankee Stadium are standing for our national
- 4:42anthem as recorded by Robert Merrill. set to
- 6:23go here in this first game of the big doubleheader,
- 6:25the first doubleheader of the year here at Yankee
- 6:27Stadium. Bill Mamboket against Joe Sparma. The
- 6:33Yankees, after today, move on to Baltimore Tuesday,
- 6:37Wednesday, and Thursday, and then to the White
- 6:40Sox and Chicago over the weekend, Friday, Saturday,
- 6:43and Sunday. But they return to the big ballpark
- 6:47on Monday night, May the 6th, Tuesday night,
- 6:51May the 7th. Wednesday afternoon, May the 8th,
- 6:54against the Cleveland Indians, led by Sam McDowell,
- 6:57Max Alvis, Sonny Siebert, Leon Wagner. They'll
- 7:00all be here on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of May.
- 7:04And then a big one that I know that you'll want
- 7:06to point to, the first greeting and the first
- 7:09meeting of the year between the Boston Red Sox
- 7:12and the New York Yankees here at Yankee Stadium.
- 7:15That'll be a big weekend set two weeks from today.
- 7:20Be a doubleheader on May the 12th against the
- 7:23Red Sox. On May the 11th will be a ladies' day,
- 7:26Saturday afternoon game, and then on May the
- 7:2910th, a Friday evening game. Well, that Boston
- 7:32Red Sox club will be in town, led by Carl Yastrzemski
- 7:35on May the 10th, 11th, and 12th. Four games set
- 7:40in three days. So we're all set to go. First
- 7:44game getting underway. Bill Mambo -Kett. Right
- 7:47now, Bill with a record of 2 -1. Ready to pitch
- 7:51to Dick McAuliffe. McAuliffe, the second baseman,
- 7:55batting at .220. Had a home run yesterday. Got
- 8:00three of them on the air and nine RBIs. The first
- 8:03pitch by Mambo Ketta. Curve is right in there
- 8:05for strike one. Dick McAuliffe leads Detroit
- 8:11in home runs and in RBIs. He hit his home run
- 8:16off Jim Boughton yesterday. He was the only Tiger
- 8:21ball player to hit home runs at Yankee Stadium
- 8:23last season. He had two of them. Here's the one
- 8:26-strike pitch as McCullough takes one on the
- 8:29corner. Strike two, and you hear the roar of
- 8:31the crowd. Oh, we've got an enthusiastic crowd
- 8:35today. The biggest crowd of the year thus far
- 8:37for Cap Day. And, of course, a fine attraction
- 8:41with the Detroit Tigers, who are currently out
- 8:43in front in the American League. Mambo to McAuliffe.
- 8:49This one is outside. One ball, two strikes. Bill
- 8:54Mambo -Kett making his third start. First against
- 8:58Detroit. Gave up only two hits in eight innings.
- 9:02That was in his last appearance on April 23rd
- 9:05at Oakland. He replaced Downing after the first
- 9:09inning. He won the ball game 6 -3. Downing had
- 9:14given up three runs in the first. All right,
- 9:17McAuliffe now is backing out of the batter's
- 9:20box. Time is being called by the plate umpire,
- 9:22Luda Muro. Marty Springstead at first, John Flaherty
- 9:25at second, Bob Stewart at third. There's a curveball
- 9:28fouled off left side back on the screen, and
- 9:31the count remains one ball and two strikes. Yes,
- 9:36sir, what a day for baseball. I tell you, if
- 9:39you're in the area and you don't know what to
- 9:41do, this is the place to do it. Come out here
- 9:45and... Watch a ball game at Yankee Stadium. It's
- 9:48a beautiful day. The weather is lovely. A fine
- 9:51crowd on hand. We're going to have some action
- 9:54for the next five or six hours. Here's the one
- 9:57-two pitch to McAuliffe. Just missed outside
- 9:59two and two. Nombo Kett, who goes for those corners.
- 10:07Bill has a lifetime mark of 111 wins, 105 losses.
- 10:13Against Detroit, he's 13 -13. Here's a 2 -2 pitch.
- 10:18Ground ball fouled on the first base side. That
- 10:21one going right past the first base coach, Wally
- 10:23Moses. Tony Cuccinello coaches his third for
- 10:28Detroit. And sign on the board, today's official
- 10:33scorer, Maury Allen of the New York Post. Two
- 10:38balls, two strikes. McAuliffe waiting. Mambo
- 10:43Kett into the windup. Here's the pitch. Curveball.
- 10:45Swung on a miss. Strike three. Mambo Kett serving
- 10:52up a high curveball. Got away with it. So we
- 11:00have one away and here's Mickey Stanley. Stanley
- 11:03hitting an even 333. 11 for 33. Has three doubles
- 11:07and three RBIs. Willie Horton, still not with
- 11:11his ball club, will join them tomorrow. There's
- 11:14a high pop, upper deck out of play. Strike one.
- 11:19On deck, Al Kaline. For those of you who may
- 11:23not be aware of it, Willie Horton has been out
- 11:25of action nearly a week after a collision with
- 11:27his shortstop, Ray Euler. Everybody ran over
- 11:31to Euler, expecting him to be the one that would
- 11:33be in bad shape, and it turned out to be Willie
- 11:35Horton, who's built like a tank. Here's the one
- 11:39-strike pitch to Stanley. Fouled off right side,
- 11:41upper deck. And that one drifting off the facade
- 11:44back into the lower area. The scramble is on.
- 11:49We got the kids here today, all of them with
- 11:51their caps, those who got here early enough to
- 11:53get them. And every time a ball goes into the
- 11:57stands, there's a wild scramble. Mambo Kett.
- 12:07Ready. Here's the two -strike pitch to Stanley.
- 12:10On the corner, he got him. Bill Mambo -Kett,
- 12:15so far razor sharp, striking out his first two
- 12:18batters, McAuliffe and Stanley. All right, Al
- 12:23Kaline stepping in. Al batting only at 196, off
- 12:27to a very slow start. He's got a double, one
- 12:29home run, and two RBIs. Kaline, who's in great
- 12:34health, has just gotten off to a slow start.
- 12:37There's a curve that hits the corner. Strike
- 12:39one. Al Kaline, one of the all -time greats.
- 12:48Some great ballplayers on the field today. Some
- 12:51have been around for many years. The one -strike
- 12:56delivery. Fastball misses outside. It's one and
- 12:58one. Kaline for Detroit. Eddie Matthews for Detroit.
- 13:02Mickey Maddow for the Yankees. They've been around
- 13:05for many years. Mantle. And Matthews with over
- 13:09500 home runs. McKee at 521. Matthews at 509.
- 13:15Okay, the 1 -1 pitch now to K -line. It just
- 13:18did miss. And I'll tell you, Mambo wanted that
- 13:20one. It was a slider that missed low. 2 -1. Out
- 13:29there in the upper deck and right field, the
- 13:32banners. Some with just the number 7. Others.
- 13:36Hazlett, New Jersey. Then a number seven. Here's
- 13:42a 2 -1 pitch. On the ground, base hit between
- 13:44the third baseman and the shortstop. To Al Kaline.
- 13:49A hard ground ball between Bobby Cox and Gene
- 13:53Michael. First base hit for Detroit. First hit
- 13:57of the game. A two -out single by Kaline. Here's
- 14:02Bill Frian. Frian has been hitting. He's at 340,
- 14:07batting in the fourth spot. Five doubles, a home
- 14:10run, seven RBIs. But Bill Frein has been having
- 14:13a lot of trouble throwing. The Yankees have stolen
- 14:16five bases on him so far. Six, that is. They
- 14:20had five Friday night, one yesterday. K -line
- 14:25moving off first. Frein waiting. There's a drive
- 14:27into left center. It's going to drop. Moving
- 14:30over in front of it is Whitaker. He's up with
- 14:32it. Throws the ball to Michael, and down to second
- 14:35base goes Bill Freon. So a heads -up base running
- 14:46by Bill Freon. And we're waiting for an official
- 14:53ruling, whether that's a double or whether it's
- 14:56a single. And Freon went to second on the throw.
- 15:02Roy Allen, the official scorer. And they're giving
- 15:06him a two -base hit. So Bill Freon gets credit
- 15:10for a double. Moving to third base is Al Kaline.
- 15:16And now here's Norm Cash. All of the action after
- 15:20two are out. McAuliffe struck out. Stanley struck
- 15:23out. Kaline singled. Freon doubled. Tigers are
- 15:27threatening. Cash batting a 143. No extra base
- 15:33hits. Three RBIs. A dangerous hitter. Now Mambo
- 15:41Kett steps off the rubber. Wipes some perspiration
- 15:45off his forehead with his left hand. That's his
- 15:47glove hand. He took it out of his glove. All
- 15:52right. Mambo into the windup. Here comes the
- 15:54pitch to Cash. The curve is a little low. It's
- 15:57ball one. Mantle is deep at first base near the
- 16:00line. Clark back on the edge of the outfield
- 16:02grass at second. Giving cash, oh, at least 25
- 16:07to 30 feet of that foul line is Bobby Cox at
- 16:11third and Michael shading toward second. The
- 16:13outfield shifted hard to the right and deep.
- 16:17Mambo Kett again. Here's the 1 -0 delivery. A
- 16:20curve is right in there. He dropped a beauty.
- 16:221 -1. The Detroit Ball Club looks like a better
- 16:33club against right -hand pitching than it does
- 16:36against left -hand pitching. Cash, Northrop,
- 16:40and McAuliffe are better hitters when they're
- 16:42batting against right -hand pitching. Here's
- 16:44the 1 -1 delivery. Strike called on the corner.
- 16:47Just got it. One ball, two strikes. Wally Moses,
- 16:54as we mentioned, coaching at first base. Yelling
- 16:58something in to Norm Cash. This could be a crucial
- 17:01part of this ball game. Mombo Kett getting out
- 17:04of this inning could make or break the entire
- 17:07game. So Bill trying to hold him in as run into
- 17:15trouble. Runners at second and third. Two out.
- 17:18One ball, two strikes to cash. Mombo Kett ready.
- 17:21Here it comes. Fastball just missed outside two
- 17:24and two. Looked as though Mambo Kett was merely
- 17:29showing that fastball to Cash. Well, we'll have
- 17:36to wait and see. What would you do? Here's the
- 17:40big pitch. It's two balls, two strikes. Would
- 17:42you curve them? Would you throw a fastball? We'll
- 17:45know. Here it is. There's the curveball hit on
- 17:47the ground. Clark moving into the hole almost
- 17:49behind first. It's up with a flip to Mantle in
- 17:52time. And the side is retired. So the 2 -2 curveball.
- 17:56Gets Norm Cash. Play going 4 -3. For Detroit,
- 18:01no runs. Two base hits. Two men left. And the
- 18:05score after a half inning of play. The Tigers
- 18:07nothing. Yankees coming to bat. fun and excitement
- 18:24along the way as well as when you get there,
- 18:27when you fill up with Atlantic Imperial Gasoline
- 18:30and follow the Imperial Road. Forget about how
- 18:34your car will run. Atlantic Imperial Gasoline
- 18:37helps keep it running the way it was made to
- 18:40run, wherever you go. Your drive will come alive
- 18:46when you take the Imperial Road. Pack more fun
- 18:49in your trip and get on the Imperial Road with
- 18:53Atlantic Imperial Gasoline. They're ready to
- 19:18go on the bottom of the first. Forrest Clark,
- 19:25the first Yankee hitter, stepping in. He'll be
- 19:28going up against fireballing Joe Sparma. Sparma
- 19:31so far this year is 1 -1. And he's been a tough
- 19:35cookie for the Yankees. He's 7 -1 lifetime and
- 19:384 -0 here in Yankee Stadium. So Joe Sparma has
- 19:44been tough for the Yankees through the years.
- 19:47Park waiting. He's batting at 167. Hits the first
- 19:50pitch on the ground with his shortstop, Euler,
- 19:53at second base. Flips over to Cash. One pitch,
- 19:56one out. So Horace Clark, who is flagged with
- 20:02that bad right wrist, one that he jammed stealing
- 20:05a base during spring training, off to a slow
- 20:09start this year. Bouncing out on the first pitch
- 20:12of the game with a shortstop, Ray Euler. One
- 20:14up and one down, and now Jake Gibbs steps in.
- 20:18Jake hitting a 2 -11. Got one double. Seven RBIs.
- 20:24He and Tresher tied for most RBIs for a Yankee.
- 20:29There's a fastball and misses outside to Gibbs.
- 20:32It's ball one. Cleveland and Washington scoreless
- 20:38after one inning. That's the first of a doubleheader.
- 20:40They're playing in Washington. Gibbs takes a
- 20:43fastball in there. One and one. Don Wirt, the
- 20:47third baseman. Euler at short. McAuliffe at second.
- 20:49Cash at first. Free and behind the plate. Northrop
- 20:52and left. Stanley in center. Kaline in right.
- 20:56The defensive alignment for Detroit in this first
- 20:59game. The 1 -1 pitch. High pop. Left side. Don
- 21:02Wirt near the rating. He'll have a shot at this
- 21:05one. Makes the play. Well, they're two up and
- 21:11two down. Here he comes, Mickey Mantle. There's
- 21:23quite a thing down here. It's a big umbrella,
- 21:26homemade. Walking in the aisle here, and it says,
- 21:31Let's go, New York. Let's go, Mickey. That's
- 21:36an ingenious invention this youngster put together.
- 21:40Mantle stepping in there. Sparma into the windup.
- 21:43Here's the pitch. Curve is outside. Ball one.
- 21:50Mickey tied with Ted Williams for fourth in the
- 21:54all -time home run derby at 521. The next one
- 21:57will put him ahead of Williams, and he'll be
- 21:59going after Jimmy Fox. Here's the 1 -0 pitch.
- 22:02It's low. Two balls, no strikes. Mickey Mantle
- 22:12came to the Yankees in 1951 in his 18th year.
- 22:18Still one of the great ballplayers in the game.
- 22:21Farmer ready. Here's a 2 -0 pitch to Mickey.
- 22:24Backs him off the plate. It's three balls and
- 22:26no strikes. Farmer making his first appearance
- 22:37against the Yanks. But a tough cookie, 7 -1 lifetime
- 22:41as we mentioned. The 3 -0 pitch to Mickey right
- 22:44downtown for a strike. Rookie, Les Kane, will
- 22:53pitch the second game for Detroit and Fred Talbot
- 22:56for the Yanks. All right, Sparma, the 3 -1 pitch
- 23:01on the way to Mickey. It's outside, ball four,
- 23:04and Mantle draws a walk. Of course, Sparma being
- 23:09careful with Mickey, walks him. And now here's
- 23:14Roy White, who's batting fourth for the first
- 23:16time this year. Roy leading the American League
- 23:21in hitting, batting at .428. Maddell, incidentally,
- 23:26was batting at .255 with three home runs and
- 23:28six RBIs. Here's Roy White. Two doubles, a home
- 23:33run, five RBIs, six stolen bases. Maddell at
- 23:37first, Cash holding against him. Worked way in
- 23:42at third base. White will bunt. The pitch to
- 23:45Roy is low for a ball. Roy White, with all of
- 23:52his diverse skills, like he can bunt, he can
- 23:55run, beat out a base hit, a two -hopper, and
- 24:00occasionally will unload one. A very versatile
- 24:03man in that number four spot, choking way up
- 24:06in the bat. Here's Farmer's pitch. Swung on and
- 24:09missed. Gets away from Bill Frehan, but Mantle
- 24:13does not go. So it's one ball, one strike. Still
- 24:21plenty of time for much of the action here at
- 24:25Yankee Stadium. The first game just getting underway.
- 24:27We're in the bottom of the first. We've got another
- 24:30one to go. Big doubleheader, and the weatherman,
- 24:34he shined down on us today. Beautiful day. Here's
- 24:41the 1 -1 pitch. White hits a sharp one -hopper
- 24:43to the second baseman, McAuliffe. He's over to
- 24:45first with it, and the side is retired. That
- 24:48ball was well hit, but right to McAuliffe. No
- 24:51runs, no hits, no errors. One man left. And the
- 24:54score after one full inning of play, Detroit
- 24:56nothing, Yankees nothing. Say, here's the White
- 25:00Owl girl. Let me ask you something. What do you
- 25:03think about Major League Baseball? I think they
- 25:06should make every stadium twice as large. Then
- 25:09you could have twice as many people at every
- 25:11game. But just what's that going to do? So many
- 25:14fans here are smoking White Owl. And if you had
- 25:17twice as many men here... Why, twice as many
- 25:20men would be enjoying White Owl. Look around.
- 25:24Rangers, Invincibles, New Yorkers. Why, they're
- 25:28all over. Just think. Twice as many men enjoying
- 25:32that slow -aged White Owl tobacco. It's wonderful
- 25:36to give that mild White Owl taste. One more thing.
- 25:40Who do you think will be the big winner today?
- 25:42Any man who lights up a White Owl. Because he'll
- 25:46discover something. You get a lot more from a
- 25:50white owl than just smoke. I've got to hear that
- 25:53last line again. You get a lot more from a white
- 25:56owl than just smoke. Jim Northrup, Don Wood,
- 26:08and Ray Euler will go up against Bill Mambo -Kett
- 26:11as we go into the top of the second inning in
- 26:13this first ballgame of the doubleheader. No score.
- 26:16It's Mombo Kett against Farmer. Mombo Kett, who
- 26:22was released by Detroit, this was last year,
- 26:25and he sat by that telephone for three weeks
- 26:27before signing up for the Yankees. Northrop takes
- 26:32the fastball right in there, strike one. Jim
- 26:35batting an even 200. Got a double, a home run,
- 26:39and four RBIs. Mambo Kett again to Northrop.
- 26:47It's inside this time. One -on -one. Mambo Kett's
- 26:54been around a while. Started with the Red Sox
- 26:56back in 1958. All right, Bill Reddy. Here's the
- 27:01one -one pitch. And Northrop takes this one inside.
- 27:04Two balls and one strike. Jim Northrop, a very
- 27:07pleasant young man. He looked prematurely gray.
- 27:11He said he was getting gray when he was in high
- 27:13school. It's only 28. Takes a curve on the corner.
- 27:172 -2, and there's a big, slow curveball. Northrop,
- 27:246 '2", 190. Had a fine year last year with the
- 27:29Tigers, batting 271. He's improved in each and
- 27:34every year that he's been with Detroit. Although
- 27:37this season, off to somewhat of a slow start.
- 27:41Here's a 2 -2 pitch by Mambo. Changeup in the
- 27:43dirt. Full count. 65 Northrup. About at 205.
- 27:49Then he went to 265 and 66. And last year, 271.
- 27:54That's 10 home runs and 61 RBIs. Dangerous hitter.
- 28:00Hits all fields and can pull a ball if it's slow.
- 28:03In other words, he doesn't pull much fastballs,
- 28:05but he'll pull that breaking pitch. There's a
- 28:08foul back. Count holds three balls and two strikes.
- 28:17Bill Robinson in center field is shading him
- 28:19to the left of second base as though he were
- 28:21a right -handed hitter. If he gets a hold of
- 28:25that curveball, he'll pull everybody around.
- 28:28White giving him a big chunk of that right field
- 28:30line. Whitaker playing him toward the left field
- 28:34foul line. Here's the payoff pitch. Curveball
- 28:37hit on the fifth foul toward the first base side.
- 28:41Wally Moses. Yankee batting coach and a Yankee
- 28:46first base coach picks it up and throws it back
- 28:49to Mombo Kett. The ball that Northrop just swung
- 28:53at was well inside and actually looked like it
- 28:55hit him not more than a few inches above the
- 28:57fist. Just dribbled out about 40 feet on the
- 29:02grass, foul territory toward first base. Northrop
- 29:07waiting. Here's the payoff pitch again. Curveball
- 29:09hit on the ground to Mantle at first. Clips to
- 29:12Mambo Kett in time when we have one away. So
- 29:17Mambo Kett running the count to three balls and
- 29:21two strikes, which you don't see too often. Gets
- 29:23Northrop on a ground out to Mantle. And here
- 29:27comes Don Wirt. Batting at 240. Two doubles and
- 29:31four RBIs. Don Wirt. We've said it before, we'll
- 29:41say it again, an underrated ball player, but
- 29:43I think suddenly has begun to get the recognition
- 29:47that he deserves. There's a fastball that's high
- 29:49and tight, ball one. You know, Gil McDougald,
- 29:52when he played for the Yankees, was one of the
- 29:54great Yankee infielders, really one of the truly
- 29:57great ones, and yet seemed to go unnoticed. Here's
- 30:01the 1 -0 pitch, where it swings and misses, strike
- 30:03one. McDougald played 10 years for the Yankees.
- 30:09And was on championship clubs of three positions.
- 30:12Third base, second base, and shortstop. One of
- 30:15the all -time great infielders. Old Magoo Goo,
- 30:19as they called him. Here's the 1 -1 pitch to
- 30:21where it's now. It's low. Two balls and a strike.
- 30:26Funny how some ballplayers will do that. Some
- 30:30just stand out. They're exciting. Sometimes they're
- 30:32overrated because they appeal to the fans and
- 30:35to the newspapermen. Others just go about their
- 30:38business, get the job done, but do it quietly.
- 30:41Here's a 2 -1 pitch to Ward. Bunts at it, misses.
- 30:44It's fouled at the plate. It's 2 -2. We're in
- 30:53the second inning. No score in this first ballgame
- 30:55of the doubleheader. Two balls, two strikes to
- 30:59Don Ward. Behind him, the shortstop, Ray Euler.
- 31:05Mombo Kett. Throwing a lot of pitches so far.
- 31:07Here's the 2 -2 delivery to Wirth. Got him on
- 31:10the corner. Strike three. And that is strikeout
- 31:14number three. And while we wait for Euler to
- 31:16come up, it's New York Yankee baseball. Let's
- 31:19pause for station identification. Hi, this is
- 31:27Jerry Ducey. Join me for my telephone talk show
- 31:30weeknights here at 810 on your dial, WGY Schenectady.
- 31:35Two down, nobody on. Here's Ray Euler, who is
- 31:38red hot in this series. Got to get 220 right
- 31:41now. Swings and misses at a fastball. Strike
- 31:43one. Ray Euler. Four for six in the first two
- 31:59games against the Yankees. Two doubles in those
- 32:02four base hits. He's waiting. There's a dribbler
- 32:05towards third. This is going to be a base hit.
- 32:07Euler digging. Mambo can't do anything with it.
- 32:11And Ray Euler gets himself a scratch single down
- 32:14the third base side. Boy, those are the kind
- 32:19you like to get because you get robbed of so
- 32:23many well -hit balls that when you get a scratch
- 32:26hit like that, it kind of makes you feel a little
- 32:29bit good. Here's Joe Farman out of the picture.
- 32:33Not a bad hitter. He's one for six. Takes a big
- 32:36swing. He can be dangerous once in a while. Stands
- 32:39up on the plate with a closed stance. Pulls the
- 32:48bat right on the end. He's waiting as Mambo Kett
- 32:55comes set. The pitch to Sparma is a curve that's
- 32:59outside. Ball one. Farmer played football at
- 33:16Ohio State. Then went to baseball. Pitch to Joe,
- 33:21a swung on, a missed, and it's strike one. One
- 33:24ball and one strike to Farmer. Two outs. No score
- 33:28on the ball game, top of the second inning. We're
- 33:31here at Yankee Stadium, and it's cap day, and
- 33:34the biggest crowd of the year on hand. Mambo
- 33:42to Farmer. Slider missed outside, 2 -1. Well,
- 33:48that first game in Washington after two innings,
- 33:50the Indians nothing, Senators nothing. That's
- 33:57all the action we have right now in either the
- 33:59American or the National with the exception of
- 34:01the game here in New York right now. Here's a
- 34:042 -1 pitch to Sparma. Swung on, a miss, strike
- 34:07two. Two balls, two strikes. And we mention again
- 34:12that Mambo Kett has been throwing a lot of pitches.
- 34:14In other words, he's not getting rid of the hitters
- 34:16in a hurry. He's run the count to 3 -2, 2 -2
- 34:20on many of the batters. And this, as the game
- 34:23goes on, has a tendency to tire you. All right,
- 34:29Sparma, the pitcher, is waiting. Euler, the shortstop,
- 34:32moving off first. Here's the pitch. A one -hopper.
- 34:34Michael has it. Races to the bag. Forces Euler
- 34:38at second base. And the side is retired. No runs,
- 34:43a base hit, one left, and the score after an
- 34:45inning and a half, Detroit nothing, Yankees nothing.
- 34:51The traveling smooth on the Imperial Road with
- 34:55Atlantic Imperial to make the going more fun.
- 34:59That may seem like a lot to expect from gasoline,
- 35:02but Atlantic Imperial isn't just any gasoline,
- 35:05it's the clean carburetor gasoline. It cleans
- 35:09your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 35:13That can do a lot to increase your driving pleasure
- 35:15because dirt deposits in the throttle plate area
- 35:18are a common cause of stalling, rough idling,
- 35:22and poor acceleration. Problems you shouldn't
- 35:25have to put up with. Atlantic Imperial won't
- 35:27tolerate troublesome throttle plate deposits.
- 35:30It dissolves them and washes them harmlessly
- 35:33away. Then... Wherever you drive, you're on the
- 35:37Imperial Road, where every trip's a pleasure
- 35:39trip. So come on in. Get on the Imperial Road
- 35:43with Atlantic Imperial, the clean carburetor
- 35:47gasoline. In the last half of the second inning,
- 35:58for the Yankees, it'll be Bill Robinson, Steve
- 36:00Whitaker, and Bobby Cox. Robbie hitting a 214,
- 36:079 for 42, has a couple of doubles, one triple,
- 36:10two RBIs. Bill Robinson, the right -hander, facing
- 36:19the fireballing right -hander, Joe Sparma. Defense
- 36:25straightaway, Robbie hits the ball to all fields,
- 36:27got good power when he gets a hold of it. Farm
- 36:31into the wind. Up the pitch to Robinson is a
- 36:33curve that's low for a ball. Robinson has power,
- 36:39although he's not a home run hitter in that sense.
- 36:41He hits the ball sharply into the gap. He'll
- 36:43go for doubles and triples. Good speed. He can
- 36:46run. Here's the 1 -0 pitch. Curve ball is low.
- 36:50Two balls and no strikes. Frank Presetti flashing
- 36:55some signs to Robinson on the 2 -0 pitch. Well,
- 36:59what would you do? Would you make them take or
- 37:01would you let them hit? Presetti at third, Ford
- 37:04coaching at first for the Yanks. Here's the 2
- 37:06-0 delivery. Robinson takes it low, three balls,
- 37:10no strikes. Joe Sparma, last year, walked 85
- 37:18batters. And 218 innings pitch, which is not
- 37:27too bad. There's a fastball that's high and tight
- 37:29to Bill Robinson. He walks him. Second walk given
- 37:33up by Sparma. Walked Madeline the first, and
- 37:36now a leadoff walk in the second to Bill Robinson.
- 37:42Steve Whitaker, who has been having his troubles,
- 37:44has only one base hit and 22 at -bats. Trying
- 37:49to get on track there. He's got one RBI. He's
- 37:53got the power. Steve waiting. Stands back from
- 37:57the plate. Robinson at first. Nobody out. Second
- 38:00inning. No score. Detroit and the Yankees. First
- 38:02game. Here's the pitch. Whitaker takes low. It's
- 38:05ball one. Steve in one of those sessions where
- 38:12you start to press. Trying to get on track. Everybody
- 38:17telling Steve about their batting slumps. when
- 38:20they were playing before the game. He laughed,
- 38:24but I don't think it helped too much. Here's
- 38:26the 1 -0 pitch. Steve, way inside. Almost got
- 38:29hit. It's 2 -0. And now Sparma is going to have
- 38:34a visit from the second baseman, Dick McCollough.
- 38:41This is a big game for Detroit because they're
- 38:44going to pitch a brand -new, fresh rookie, Les
- 38:48Kane. He'll be making his major league debut
- 38:52in the second game. Of course, youngsters can
- 38:56be unpredictable at times, and this is the one
- 39:00the Tigers would like to get, just in case. All
- 39:04right, Sparma sets. Here's the 2 -0 delivery,
- 39:06and Whitaker takes high, three balls and no strikes.
- 39:11So Sparma, running into trouble here with Steve
- 39:14Whitaker, has already walked Bill Robinson. On
- 39:18deck, it's Bobby Cox. Farmer, a hard worker,
- 39:25reaches back, puts everything he's got on every
- 39:29pitch. He's ready now. Here's the next one to
- 39:33Whitaker. It's high, ball four. And that's the
- 39:37third walk for Farmer. The Yankees now have runners
- 39:43at first and second, and here's Bobby Cox. Bill
- 39:49Robinson at second, Whitaker at first, and now
- 39:52Bill Freham, the big catcher, is out there talking
- 39:55to Sparma. All right, now Ray Euler is in there.
- 40:12Sparma has pitched to two batters and has not
- 40:15thrown a strike yet in this inning. Walk Robinson
- 40:19on fourth straight and Whitaker on fourth straight.
- 40:21Now here's Bobby Cox. Cox is looking for his
- 40:29first Major League base hit. Got his first Major
- 40:32League start yesterday. He's 0 for 6. The pitch
- 40:36to Bob is in there. Strike one. The Detroit ball
- 40:44club half looking for the bump. Let's see what
- 40:49manager Ralph House does. Gene Michael in the
- 40:52on -deck circle, and he'll be followed by Mambo
- 40:54Kett. Dennis Ryband starting to throw for Detroit
- 40:58as Farmer comes set. Here's the next one to Cox,
- 41:03and he bunched a foul right behind the plate,
- 41:05a curveball. Nothing in tune out of Bobby Cox.
- 41:13Oh, the pressure goes on Cox. Farmer out in front.
- 41:17No balls, two strikes. Runners at first and second.
- 41:20No score. Bottom of the second. Cox waiting.
- 41:36Farmer getting the sign from Frein. Detroit infield.
- 41:41Double play depth. Outfield straight away. Bobby
- 41:48waiting. Farmer set. Here's the pitch. Curb is
- 41:51inside. One and two. These are tough days for
- 41:57Bobby Cox. Just trying to get his feet wet. Trying
- 42:01to get started. He's been around a long time.
- 42:03Eight years in the minor league. This is his
- 42:06rookie season in the majors. All right. Cox is
- 42:11waiting. Farm a set. Here's the one -two pitch.
- 42:15Curveball swung on and just fouled. Bill Freon
- 42:20had it in his glove, couldn't hang on to it.
- 42:22So a break for Bobby Cox. Cox just got a piece
- 42:33of that ball, just enough so that it slithered
- 42:36out of the glove. The catcher, Bill Freon. Freed
- 42:40at it and couldn't fight gravity. Reached for
- 42:42it as it fell to the ground. All right, it's
- 42:45one ball and two strikes. Runners moving off
- 42:48first and second. Here's the next one. Cox fouls
- 42:50this one back. Incidentally, for those of you
- 42:56who may be able to help, Andy Kosko, who has
- 42:59four youngsters, is looking for a three -bedroom
- 43:04furnished home in the greater New York area,
- 43:07any place. Get his family located. He had one
- 43:11all set and then it fell through. And now he's
- 43:13got his family that he'd like to bring in and
- 43:16get them straightened out. And if anyone can
- 43:19help, we'll tell you where to send the message
- 43:22in just one moment. Here's the one -two pitch
- 43:25to Cox. Curve. He goes down. It's over his head.
- 43:28Two and two. He could help Andy Cosco with a
- 43:33three -bedroom rental for the summer of a furnished
- 43:37home. Send it to Bruce Henry, traveling secretary,
- 43:42care of the New York Yankees, Bronx, New York.
- 43:50Okay, here's the 2 -2 pitch now. On the way to
- 43:53Cox. He hits it on the ground. Word has it. Goes
- 43:55to second for one. And barreling into second
- 43:58base is Dee Whitaker. No chance for McAuliffe
- 44:02to make a relay to first. Moving to third is
- 44:06Bill Robinson. See, Whitaker really flew into
- 44:10second base, and he ended up about 15 feet past
- 44:14the bag. That's how hard he went in there. So
- 44:19Whitaker forced a second play going 5 -4, third
- 44:23to second. Moving to third base is Robinson at
- 44:27first, Bobby Cox, and now here's Gene Michael
- 44:30who's been red hot. Michael with four base hits
- 44:34in the last two games, batting at 182. Got two
- 44:38doubles. And a couple of RBIs. One home run.
- 44:49Gene Michael batting from the left side. Starts
- 44:53to punt. It was a safe squeeze. Wert was breaking
- 44:56in. Holding a third until he saw what happened
- 44:59was Bill Robinson. Michael took the ball outside
- 45:03for ball one. Pulled his bat out of the way in
- 45:06time. Gene Michael trying to lay one down. John
- 45:12Worth, the minute he squared around, started
- 45:14breaking in at third. All right, Cox at first,
- 45:18Robinson at third. Here's the pitch to Michael.
- 45:20It's a fastball high and outside, 2 -0. Well,
- 45:30you can hear it in the background. We want a
- 45:32hit. We want a hit, all the youngsters out here.
- 45:36Begin the chant. No score in the ballgame. Last
- 45:40of the second. Yankees threatening. One out.
- 45:42Runners at first and third. 2 -0 on Michael.
- 45:46Here's the next one by Sparma. Hit in front of
- 45:48the plate. Free in. Is out. After it. Underhand
- 45:51flip. The cash is in time. Robinson holds the
- 45:55third and down to second base goes Bobby Cox.
- 45:59That ball hit about 10 feet out in front of the
- 46:02plate. No chance for Robinson to get in. Going
- 46:06to second. Here's Cox. Michael thrown out at
- 46:09first. And here's the pitcher, Bill Mamboquette.
- 46:14Bill Sparma creating all of his trouble with
- 46:17base on balls. He walked the first two hitters,
- 46:20Robinson and Whitaker. Yankees on the road. Tuesday,
- 46:34Wednesday, and Thursday at Baltimore. Friday,
- 46:36Saturday, and Sunday at Chicago. All right, Farmer
- 46:40now taking his wind up. The first pitch to Mambo
- 46:43Cut is a curve that backs him off the plate.
- 46:45And it's ball one. Farmer is just naturally wild.
- 46:56He's not a guy with that fine pinpoint control.
- 47:00Here's the 1 -0 pitch. Fastball. Hit on the fist.
- 47:03Off the facade of the upper deck. Bounced into
- 47:06the lower deck and back on the field. One ball
- 47:14and one strike. Farmer had such stuff on that
- 47:19ball that when Mambo catch swung at it, it was
- 47:21almost by him. Hit it right on the fist. Cox
- 47:26at second. Robinson at third. Two outs. Here's
- 47:29the 1 -1 pitch to Mambo. High pop, right side,
- 47:33that's slicing into the stands. Lower area and
- 47:35the scramble is on. Not too much wind out here
- 47:48today. Wish you could see that outfield. They're
- 47:55shaded way toward the right side as though Mambo
- 47:58Kev is a left -hand hitter and very shallow.
- 48:01Boy, they are way in. Here's the 1 -2 pitch.
- 48:04Hit the left field. Not too deep. Coming on is
- 48:07Jim Northrup. He's under it and he's got it.
- 48:12For the Yankees, no runs, no hits. No Detroit
- 48:16errors. Two men left and the score after two.
- 48:19Detroit no runs on three hits. The Yankees no
- 48:21runs and no hits. You can fire ahead for the
- 48:31things you will be. Invest in the future and
- 48:38you will succeed. When you follow the ego, the
- 48:44red, white, and blue ego, invest in freedom,
- 48:49change the US. Have you ever attempted to buy
- 48:56a car and found yourself burned by high -pressure
- 49:00salesmen? I recommend that you see the Burn Men.
- 49:03That's B -Y -R -N -E. And it spells the only
- 49:07Ford and Mercury dealer in Mechanicville. Jack
- 49:11Burn. See the Burn Men today for courteous service
- 49:14and knowledge of their product inside out. See
- 49:18the Burn Men at Jack Burn Ford and Mercury, 96
- 49:21North Main Street in Mechanicville. Last night
- 49:30scores in the American League, Oakland 6, California
- 49:333. In the National League, Philadelphia 4, the
- 49:37Braves 1, St. Louis 7, Pittsburgh 5. And Cincinnati
- 49:465 and the Mets 3. It was all a night action yesterday
- 49:50in the American and the National. All right,
- 50:01here's Dick McAuliffe, who struck out of the
- 50:04first inning. Mombo Kett. The old campaigner,
- 50:10as they call him. Into the windup and a pitch
- 50:14to McAuliffe. In there, strike one. Yeah, I guess
- 50:20of the pitchers, Mombo Kett is the oldest. Possibly
- 50:28Steve Hamilton may be in there with him. There's
- 50:30a fastball in there. Strike two. Let's take a
- 50:37look to see who is the oldest Yankee pitcher.
- 50:48Mombo Kett pitching to Dick McAuliffe. Delivers
- 50:52a curve that just misses outside. One ball, two
- 50:55strikes. Mambo Kett. See, Bill was born in August
- 51:0811, 36. The pitch to McCullough. Dribble toward
- 51:14third. Mambo up with an underhand flip. In time,
- 51:17a nice play by Bill Mambo Kett. Fine underhand
- 51:24toss by Mambo to get McCullough. Let's see. Steve
- 51:28Hamilton was born. 11 -30. 36. So Mombo Kett
- 51:35has Hamilton by three months and a few days.
- 51:44All right, stepping in now is Mickey Stanley,
- 51:47who struck out in the first inning. Takes low.
- 51:52Ball one. Stanley. Right -hand batter against
- 51:56the right -hand of Mombo Kett. No score in this
- 51:58game. Top of the third inning. Mambo into the
- 52:09windup. Delivers a fastball. Got the corner.
- 52:141 -1. Gibbs behind the plate. Mantle at first.
- 52:20Clark at second. Michael a shortstop. Cox at
- 52:22third. Whitaker at left. Robinson center. White
- 52:24in right. The 1 -1 pitch. Just misses outside
- 52:28by Mambo Kidd. It's 2 -1. The umpires today,
- 52:33Lou DiMuro is behind the plate. Marty Springstead
- 52:35at first, John Flaherty second, Bob Stewart at
- 52:39third. Defense is straight away for Stanley.
- 52:47Mickey pulls the bat right down on the end. Does
- 52:50not have too much power. He had only seven home
- 52:52runs last year. Goes up only 333 times. There's
- 52:58a shot up the middle of base hit. That ball was
- 53:01a bullet. He picked on a slow curve and drilled
- 53:05it up the middle. Base hit number four off Mambo
- 53:10Kett. And here's Al Kaline who got the first
- 53:12hit after two rounds in the first inning. Well,
- 53:19the heart of the Detroit batting order coming
- 53:22up now. Kaline, Freon, and Cash. Got his work
- 53:34cut out for him now. Al Kaline, who's been a
- 53:37little slow and coming to life here with a bat,
- 53:40starting to get underway, but this time pops
- 53:43it up into short center field. Robinson calling
- 53:46for it all the way, is under it and makes the
- 53:48play. Stanley was halfway down and then returns
- 53:51to first. So Kaline, going after the first pitch,
- 53:56pops up to short center, two down. Here's Bill
- 53:59Frean, who hit a double in the first. For Freon,
- 54:04that was his sixth double of the year, and that
- 54:07leads to the Detroit Tigers. Bill Freon, powerful
- 54:15hitter. Batting cleanup. Right -hander. Hangs
- 54:20right over that plate. Stanley, moving off first.
- 54:27The pitch is a pitch -out. They were looking
- 54:29for the possible running of Mickey Stanley. Freeman
- 54:48was hit by pitch balls 20 times last year, many
- 54:52of them in that upper left arm. That's why he
- 54:55wears that padding. That was last year. There
- 54:57goes Stanley. The pitch fouled back on the screen.
- 55:00Stanley had a good jump, and Gibbs would have
- 55:03had a tough time throwing him out had Freeman
- 55:05taken that pitch. It's one ball, one strike,
- 55:08two down. Now Bill Freon saying something to
- 55:13Norm Cash in the on -deck circle, and he wants
- 55:15a little bit of that pine tar, so they throw
- 55:17him the rag. Tell you what's quite an experience
- 55:22is to walk around behind the batting cage during
- 55:25batting practice and shake hands with these ballplayers,
- 55:27and they've all got that pine tar on their hands.
- 55:30You need a bottle of turpentine by the time you
- 55:32get done. Really sticks. Someone has just thrown
- 55:37a tennis ball on the field, and... Now Boquette
- 55:41walks in a few steps and gets rid of it. One
- 55:50ball, one strike. Stanley at first base. Two
- 55:54outs, no score, third inning. Bill Fran, the
- 55:57big catcher's the hitter. Came into the game
- 56:00at 340. He's one for one, a double. The pitch
- 56:05to Bill is hit on the fist, short right field,
- 56:07Clark moving back into the short right field
- 56:10area and makes the play. No runs, a base hit,
- 56:14one left, and the score after two and a half,
- 56:16Detroit nothing, Yankees nothing. If you're like
- 56:21most people, chances are you've been on trips
- 56:23to some very exciting places, but you could be
- 56:25overlooking some exciting places right under
- 56:27your own nose. There are plenty of them in the
- 56:30great northeast, and it's easy to include several
- 56:32in a short one - or two -day trip with the help
- 56:35of Atlantic's free weekender tour guides. These
- 56:38are more than maps. They're complete little travel

- 56:54and meaningful. This weekend, do something different.

- 57:25Okay, we go into the last half of the third inning.
- 57:28It's a scoreless ball game, this first one of
- 57:30the doubleheader. Joe Sparma against Bill Mambo
- 57:34-Kett. For the Yankees, the top of the batting
- 57:37order, Clark, Gibbs, and Maddow coming up against
- 57:39Sparma. Right after this half inning, we'll bring
- 57:46you up to date on all the action in both the
- 57:48American and the National and the scores we may
- 57:51have at the time. Horace Clark is stepping in.
- 57:56He bounced to the shortstop in the first inning
- 57:58on the first pitch of the game. Clark batting
- 58:06from the left side. A switch hitter, as you know.
- 58:12Sparma's first pitch to Horace is in there, strike
- 58:14one. Clark, Maddow, White, and Michael, all switch
- 58:20hitters. When Peterson started yesterday's game,
- 58:23six of the nine players for the Yankees were
- 58:26switch hitters. Clark fouls it off. Upper deck.
- 58:30Strike two. Trash was playing in that game yesterday.
- 58:34And, of course, Rich Peterson, a switch hitting
- 58:37pitcher. That's something that may go down as
- 58:40a record. Of course, the switch hitter becoming
- 58:45more in evidence in more recent years. Mickey
- 58:49Mantle, the guy who started it all back in 1951.
- 58:54All right, here's the two -strike pitch by Sparma
- 58:57to Clark. It's way outside, one and two. There
- 59:02were switch hitters before, like Frankie Frisch,
- 59:05Red St. Dees, and many others, but Mantle is
- 59:08the guy who really brought it into focus. All
- 59:14right, here's the one -two pitch now to Clark.
- 59:16Curve is outside, two and two. Two balls, two
- 59:27strikes. Clark waiting. Sparma delivers. Fastball
- 59:36dribbled out toward the mound. Sparma is on it.
- 59:39Fires to Cash just in time. Almost hit Clark
- 59:41in the back of the head. That was a fine play
- 59:44by the first baseman, Norm Cash. Play going 1
- 59:47-3. One up and one down. Here's Jake Gibbs who
- 59:50fouled the third in the first inning. A scoreless
- 1:00:01ball game, and yet it's not moving along very
- 1:00:03quickly. Well, that'll give you plenty of time
- 1:00:06if you're in the area to come out here and see
- 1:00:08most of this first game and all of the second.
- 1:00:15Jake Gibbs now waiting as Farmer gets the sign
- 1:00:19from free in. Here's the first pitch. The curve
- 1:00:21is low. Ball one. Farmer has not given up a base
- 1:00:27hit, and yet he's not been sharp. He's walked
- 1:00:29three. Mantle in the first. Robinson and Whitaker
- 1:00:33in the second. Here's the 1 -0 pitch to Jake.
- 1:00:36On the ground. The shortstop in the hole. Euler
- 1:00:39is up with it. Underhand flip in time. A nice
- 1:00:42play by Ray Euler. Boy, they went over there
- 1:00:46and gave it that underhand shoot. And that ball
- 1:00:49fired across the infield. So we have two down,
- 1:00:56and here's Mickey who walked in the first inning.
- 1:01:09Mickey Mantle. Waiting. Farmer delivers a pitch
- 1:01:14on the ground. Cash to his right. Bobbles the
- 1:01:17ball. Can't come up with it. Fires late. And
- 1:01:21Mantle is on a first base. Let's see how they
- 1:01:23rule it. And they're giving Cash an error. An
- 1:01:33error for Norm Cash on the play. That'll bring
- 1:01:36up Roy White with Mantle at first. A two -out
- 1:01:50error by Norm Cash. Here's Roy White. No score
- 1:02:01on the game. Last of the third. Mantle at first.
- 1:02:03The pitch to White. Curve is outside. Ball one.
- 1:02:08The ball of a hit to Cash was a questionable
- 1:02:11call for the official scorer, but there are no
- 1:02:15hits in this game yet. And therefore... As is
- 1:02:20generally the pattern, the first base hit in
- 1:02:22the game usually has to be a solid one. Or one
- 1:02:26that is not disputed. Here's the 1 -0 pitch.
- 1:02:30White fouls it back. 1 -1. Roy White bounced
- 1:02:39out sharply to second base in the first inning.
- 1:02:42White batting fourth. Was leading the American
- 1:02:46League as the game started today. Had a .428
- 1:02:51batting average. He's 0 for 1. All right, Farmer
- 1:02:59sets. The pitch to White. Swung on, a miss, strike
- 1:03:02two. A fastball at the knees. Both Nicky Lulich
- 1:03:08and Tom Matchick are not with the Tigers this
- 1:03:12weekend as they're attending Army Reserve meetings.
- 1:03:15Lulich normally would have been one of the starters
- 1:03:18in this series. But instead, that second game
- 1:03:21goes to Les Kane, a rookie. All right, the 1
- 1:03:25-2 pitch to White. On the ground sharply again
- 1:03:27to McCollough, the second. He has this one. Flips
- 1:03:29to Cash. And the side is retired. For the Yankees,
- 1:03:34no runs, no hits. One Detroit error, one man
- 1:03:37left. And the score after three, Detroit nothing
- 1:03:40and the Yankees nothing. Now let's take a look
- 1:03:44at the scoreboard. In the American League, in
- 1:03:47the first of a doubleheader, the Senators lead
- 1:03:49the Indians 1 -0 after 3. Williams against Ortega.
- 1:03:53That's Dan Williams for the Indians and Phil
- 1:03:56Ortega for the Senators. In the first of a pair,
- 1:04:00Boston and Baltimore, it'll be Santiago against
- 1:04:02McNally. No action as yet. In a single game,
- 1:04:05the White Sox play the Twins in Minnesota. And
- 1:04:08in another single game on the West Coast, it's
- 1:04:10Oakland against California in Anaheim. In the
- 1:04:12National League... The Mets and Cincinnati play
- 1:04:15a single contest, and that game as yet is not
- 1:04:18underway. In the first of a doubleheader, Houston
- 1:04:20failed to score. On the top of the first, they're
- 1:04:22playing the Cubs in a doubleheader at Chicago.
- 1:04:25In a single ballgame, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
- 1:04:29Wise for the Phillies, Phil Necro for the Braves.
- 1:04:34On the west coast, the Dodgers are at San Francisco,
- 1:04:37and a later start, Pittsburgh at St. Louis. Both
- 1:04:41of those single games. And now we remind you
- 1:04:44it's New York Yankee baseball. Let's pause for
- 1:04:46station identification. This is Bill Edwards
- 1:04:50and I'll see you twice a day at 7 and at 1. Here
- 1:04:53on WGY 810 on your dials connected. Okay, into
- 1:05:03the fourth inning. No score in this game. Mambo
- 1:05:06Kett against Farmer. And here comes Norm Cash.
- 1:05:08He'll be followed by Northrup and Wirth. Mambo's
- 1:05:12first pitch to Cash is on the corner strike one.
- 1:05:15And I keep saying on the corners, and that's
- 1:05:17where they are. The one -strike pitch to Cash.
- 1:05:26On the ground, sharply hit Mantle on two hops.
- 1:05:29Flips to Mambo, one away. Cash bounced to second
- 1:05:33in the first inning, and this time to Mantle.
- 1:05:36So he's 0 for 2. Now here's Jim Northrup. Northrup
- 1:05:41bounced out to Mickey. That was in the second
- 1:05:44inning. Talk to Johnny Sane, the Detroit pitching
- 1:05:57coach, before the game, and he's just raving
- 1:05:59about some of his young pitchers. Fastball is
- 1:06:03in there. Strike one to Northrop. Warden, who's
- 1:06:063 -0, and Les Payne, who's getting a start today,
- 1:06:09and a youngster by the name of Patterson. John
- 1:06:14just loves to work with those young boys. All
- 1:06:21right, Mambo Kitt eyeing Jake Gibbs with Northrop
- 1:06:24up there. Here's the next one on the way to the
- 1:06:27left fielder. It's fouled back on the screen.
- 1:06:29Strike two. The little extra roar you heard was
- 1:06:45a ball rolling back that didn't quite get to
- 1:06:47the field. It's hung up on the net. Here's a
- 1:06:50two -strike pitch now to Northrop, high and outside.
- 1:06:53One ball, two strikes, one out. Top of the fourth
- 1:06:56inning. The Tigers have all four bases. It's
- 1:07:00a scoreless ballgame. Jim Northrop waiting as
- 1:07:08Mambo Kett delivers, and this one is low, 2 -2.
- 1:07:13Northrop was three for five yesterday. Had a
- 1:07:16home run and two RBIs. Northrop has a straight
- 1:07:26-up stance. Holds the bat right on the end. Feet
- 1:07:30not too far apart. The 2 -2 delivery. Swung on.
- 1:07:33Foul back off the chest protector of the plate
- 1:07:36umpire, Luda Muro. Now holes at two balls and
- 1:07:40two strikes. Somebody threw a big firecracker
- 1:07:44out of the upper deck, I guess. Those things
- 1:07:53can be dangerous. I wish you youngsters would
- 1:07:56be careful about that because sometimes they
- 1:07:59can land near people's eyes. Here's the 2 -2
- 1:08:02delivery. Changeup, hit the right field, coming
- 1:08:04on fast. It's Roy White, it's in there for a
- 1:08:06base hit. That ball hit near the trademark, not
- 1:08:11too solidly. But goes for a single for Jim Northrup.
- 1:08:17That's the fifth hit off Mambo. Now here's Don
- 1:08:21Wirt who struck out on the second. Don Wirt,
- 1:08:32the third baseman, stepping in there, facing
- 1:08:35Mambo Kett. Yankee infield, a double play depth.
- 1:08:40Now Mambo steps off the rubber. Northrop at first
- 1:08:48base. The pitch to word is high. It's ball one.
- 1:08:51You might be hearing a little activity and noise.
- 1:08:54There's a youngster who's climbed up on the screen
- 1:08:56trying to get a baseball through the netting.
- 1:08:59And even if he gets it, they won't let him have
- 1:09:01it because you can't do that. He's also got his
- 1:09:04finger stuck in that screen. And if there was
- 1:09:06a foul ball that came back there, it chopped
- 1:09:10some of those fingers right off. All right, here's
- 1:09:15the 1 -0 pitch to work. It's 2 -0. But he's creating
- 1:09:21more attention here at the stadium than the ball
- 1:09:24game. And unfortunately, he could put himself
- 1:09:27in danger there. And he has now got the ball
- 1:09:32strung all the way across the middle of the screen,
- 1:09:37and he's still climbing across there. All right,
- 1:09:42the 2 -0 pitch. There goes Northrup. Ball hit
- 1:09:44in the center field. Little drop for a base hit.
- 1:09:46Northrup on his way to third base. And on the
- 1:09:50hit and run, John Wirt drills a single to center.
- 1:09:54Detroit with runners now at first and third.
- 1:09:57One away. And the batter will be the shortstop,
- 1:10:01Ray Euler. That's the sixth hit off Mambo Kett.
- 1:10:14The youngster finally got the ball, but he's
- 1:10:16going to be escorted from the ballpark. And when
- 1:10:18he gets down, there's an officer waiting for
- 1:10:20him. That's very dangerous. A foul ball. Hit
- 1:10:27those fingers. They're stuck right between the
- 1:10:29screen. He can take one right off. All right.
- 1:10:35Euler is stepping in. He had a scratch single
- 1:10:37in the first. It's a high fly into center field.
- 1:10:40Robinson gunning for this one. Tagging up is
- 1:10:42Northrup. Here's the throw. It goes into second
- 1:10:45base, and Northrup comes in to score, and Detroit
- 1:10:47leads 1 -0 on the sacrifice fly by Ray Euler.
- 1:10:54Euler has been a thorn in the side of the Yankees
- 1:10:56throughout this entire series. Ray coming up
- 1:11:01with his fifth RBI of the year, and Detroit taking
- 1:11:05a 1 -0 lead. Well, that boy has moved that ball
- 1:11:17halfway across the screen, and they've got half
- 1:11:20of the special police department there to greet
- 1:11:24him as he comes down. There's a ground ball,
- 1:11:27slowly hit towards short. In front of the shortstop
- 1:11:29is Cox. One has it. Flips the mantle just in
- 1:11:32time, and Sparma's out of there. That play going
- 1:11:355 -3. Nice play by Bobby Cox. So for Detroit,
- 1:11:40one run on two base hits, one man left. And the
- 1:11:44score after three and a half, Detroit leading
- 1:11:46the Yankees one to nothing. Will the White Owl
- 1:11:50girl please report to the press box? How'd you
- 1:11:53know I was here? Easy. You're always where the
- 1:11:56men are. There are lots of men out here today,
- 1:11:59right? Right. You got me in the middle of my
- 1:12:02adding. Adding? Just for fun, I was counting
- 1:12:05the men smoking White Owl cigars. And how'd you
- 1:12:07come out? I lost count. They ate so many. I spot
- 1:12:12some rangers, a bunch of New Yorkers, hundreds
- 1:12:14of invincibles. We need a White Owl scoreboard.
- 1:12:17Even without one, I can tell it's a White Owl
- 1:12:20crowd. Because we love that White Owl tobacco.
- 1:12:23It's slow -aged, well -oiled to build up the
- 1:12:27mild taste. And no matter which White Owl shape
- 1:12:30a man picks, he's sure of a smooth smoke right
- 1:12:34down to the last pitch. That's a pretty good
- 1:12:37pitch you're making yourself. It's true. Every
- 1:12:40time I see a man light up a white owl, I know
- 1:12:43he's going to enjoy himself. I know he's going
- 1:12:46to discover why they say you get a lot more from
- 1:12:49a white owl than just milk. Okay, Detroit leading
- 1:13:08the Yankees 1 -0. We go into the bottom of the
- 1:13:10fourth inning. Here's Bill Robinson. He'll be
- 1:13:12followed by Whitaker and Cox. And Joe Sparma,
- 1:13:16leading right now, 1 -0, has not given up a base
- 1:13:21hit. Robbie, who opened up the second with a
- 1:13:33base on balls. Waiting as Farmer goes into his
- 1:13:36lineup. There's a curve that's in there for strike
- 1:13:38one. Cubs leading Houston 2 -0. They're in the
- 1:13:45second inning. Senators 1, the Indians nothing
- 1:13:50in the fourth. Robinson, a high chopper to the
- 1:13:53shortstop. Euler has it on the second hop. Flips
- 1:13:55over to Cash. One away. Ray Euler throws that
- 1:14:01ball underhand, but he really gets something
- 1:14:03on it. Just Steve Whitaker who walked in the
- 1:14:07second. Yankees trailing by a run. First game
- 1:14:11of the doubleheader. It'll be Fred Talbot for
- 1:14:13the Yanks. Les Kane for Detroit in that second
- 1:14:17game. And it will be the Major League debut of
- 1:14:20Les Kane. Just a youngster. Seems to be fairly
- 1:14:26calm before the game. Rather relaxed. There's
- 1:14:30a curve to Whitaker inside. Ball one. Les Payne,
- 1:14:39a young left -hander, making his major league
- 1:14:43debut in the second game. But right now, it's
- 1:14:48Steve Whitaker. 1 -0 the count with one out,
- 1:14:51nobody on. Here's Farmer, outside, 2 -0. Detroit
- 1:14:55leading 1 -0. They got that run last inning.
- 1:14:59A one -out single by Northrop, a single on the
- 1:15:02hit -and -run by Wirt, and a sacrifice fly by
- 1:15:05Ray Euler. Here's the 2 -0 pitch to Whitaker.
- 1:15:11In there for a strike. Joe Sparma. He just rears
- 1:15:18back and unloads. Born in Matlin, Ohio. He's
- 1:15:28ready. The 2 -1 pitch to Whitaker is low and
- 1:15:31outside, 3 -1. See, Sparma was 13 -8. In 65 for
- 1:15:39Detroit. 2 -7 at 66. Had a real bad year. And
- 1:15:43then bounced back 16 -9 last year under the tutelage
- 1:15:46of Johnny Sainz. High fastball over the head
- 1:15:49of Whitaker. Ball four. That's the fourth walk
- 1:15:52given up by Sparma and the second to Whitaker.
- 1:15:56The Yankees still looking for their first base
- 1:15:58hit. And only base runners. Mantle with a walk.
- 1:16:03Safe on an error by Cash. Robinson with a walk
- 1:16:06and Whitaker. has been walked twice. Now the
- 1:16:11plate umpire, Lou DiMuro, is rubbing up the baseball
- 1:16:13as Bobby Cox steps in. Winokirk first. Cox the
- 1:16:21hitter. Bobby is 0 for 1. He's 0 for 7, looking
- 1:16:25for his first Major League Base hit. Cox just
- 1:16:31began to play regularly. That was yesterday.
- 1:16:35Made his first start ever in the big leagues.
- 1:16:38All right, Whitaker moving off first. Went away.
- 1:16:40The pitch to Cox. High pop. Coming back into
- 1:16:43the upper deck and out of play. Strike one. Boy,
- 1:16:51that first base hit can be a real strain sometimes.
- 1:16:55Mike Ferraro won the third base job in spring
- 1:16:58training. And had a good shot two weeks. Did
- 1:17:04not hit as well as he would have liked, so manager
- 1:17:07Ralph House decided to give Bobby Cox a shot
- 1:17:09at it. All right, Sparman to Cox. On the ground
- 1:17:18to the shortstop. He has it. Flips to second
- 1:17:20for one. Throw to first. Double play. 6 -4 -3.
- 1:17:25Short second to first. And the Yankees are out
- 1:17:29of there here in the bottom of the fourth. No
- 1:17:31runs, no hits, no errors. Nobody left. And the
- 1:17:34score after four, Detroit one run on six hits,
- 1:17:37the Yankees no runs and no hits. Extended care
- 1:17:42benefits are now available under Medicare for
- 1:17:44people 65 or over. These benefits are for the

- 1:17:49days or more and whose doctor decides that he
- 1:17:51no longer requires full hospital care but is
- 1:17:54not yet well enough to go home. If you're admitted
- 1:17:56to one of these special extended care facilities
- 1:17:58within 14 days after you were released from the

- 1:18:25follow -up care in a specially qualified skilled
- 1:18:28nursing home. or other approved extended care
- 1:18:31facility after a hospital stay. For more information,
- 1:18:35get in touch with your Social Security office
- 1:18:37and ask for a leaflet called Medicare and the
- 1:18:40Extended Care Facility. Okay, all set to go here
- 1:18:44in the top of the fifth inning. Bill Mamboquette
- 1:18:46and Joe Sparma with Sparma right now out in front
- 1:18:49one to nothing. Detroit leading the Yankees.
- 1:18:53Mamboquette has given six hits. Sparma has yet
- 1:18:56to give up a base hit. And once again at the
- 1:18:59top of the Detroit batting order, Dick McAuliffe,
- 1:19:02he'll be followed by Stanley and Kaline. This
- 1:19:06is the third time that McAuliffe has let off
- 1:19:09an inning. He did so to open the game in the
- 1:19:11first and then did it again in the third and
- 1:19:13now in the fifth. He's 0 for 2, struck out and
- 1:19:16bounced to the pitcher. McAuliffe, a dangerous
- 1:19:20batter. Waiting as Mambo delivers and the fastball
- 1:19:25is outside. Ball one. In the fourth inning, the
- 1:19:28Senators still lead the Indians 1 -0. The other
- 1:19:33game, it's the Cubs 2, Houston nothing in the
- 1:19:36third. And right here, it's Detroit 1, Yankees
- 1:19:42nothing fifth. McCollum takes outside. Two balls
- 1:19:47and no strikes. Ron Boquette shooting for his
- 1:19:55third win. It's been a tremendous acquisition
- 1:19:59for the Yankees. Here's the 2 -0 delivery. Bunted
- 1:20:03behind the plate foul. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:20:07McAuliffe was halfway to first base before the
- 1:20:10ball bounced back into Gibbs' mitt. Dick McAuliffe
- 1:20:18trying to get something started. Tried to beat
- 1:20:21out a bunt. Some close races in both the American
- 1:20:33and the National right now. Red hot. There's
- 1:20:36a dribbler toward first. It's fair. Gibbs out.
- 1:20:38Under it. Flips the mantle. In time on a close
- 1:20:41play. He had to throw that ball overhand to get
- 1:20:45it over the head of Dick McAuliffe. McAuliffe
- 1:20:48going right down that line. Gibbs had to throw
- 1:20:50it over his head and made a good play. So that
- 1:20:53one goes 2 -3. Hatcher to first. We have one
- 1:20:57up and one down. Here's Mickey Stanley who struck
- 1:20:59out in singles. Stanley was moving right along
- 1:21:08in the Tiger outfield a couple years ago and
- 1:21:11then he broke a finger in a home accident. Never
- 1:21:15really regained his job again. Jim Northrup came
- 1:21:18on and with Horton, Northrup and Kaline they
- 1:21:20have formed the outfield for Detroit. Curveball
- 1:21:23is in there. Strike one. Stanley has been a valuable
- 1:21:27acquisition for the Tigers, but has never really
- 1:21:30made it on a regular basis as yet. Now Boquette
- 1:21:39getting the side from Gibbs. The one -strike
- 1:21:42pitch. On the ground. Michael to his left. Up
- 1:21:45with it. Underhand flip is off the glove of Mantle.
- 1:21:48Rolling back to the screen. And Gibbs is right
- 1:21:51there. A fine play by Jake. And they're charging
- 1:21:59Gene Michael with an error on the throw. And
- 1:22:02that's the second Yankee error in the ballgame.
- 1:22:05No, wait a minute. That's the first Yankee error.
- 1:22:08The other one was by Norm Cash for Detroit. So
- 1:22:13Michael is charged with an error. Stanley on
- 1:22:15at first base. And here's Al Kaline, who's one
- 1:22:18for two. Single to left in the first. Yankees
- 1:22:25still looking for the first base hit. Detroit
- 1:22:27with six. Kaline standing in there. Waiting.
- 1:22:34Mambo Kett delivers. There's a dribbler foul
- 1:22:36to the right side. Gibbs out and after the ball.
- 1:22:40Fires it back to Bill. It's one strike on Al
- 1:22:42Kaline. Kaline free and in cash. Third, fourth,
- 1:22:47and fifth hitters for Detroit coming on now.
- 1:22:57All right, Mambo Kett comes set. Check Stanley.
- 1:23:01The pitch to Kaline. It's a pitch out. Stanley
- 1:23:04holding. It's one and one. That's the second
- 1:23:08time the Gibbs has pitched out with Stanley at
- 1:23:11first. Sometimes the manager will send a man
- 1:23:16right after a pitch out. He doesn't figure the
- 1:23:18catcher will go for it twice in a row. Let's
- 1:23:21see what happens here. Stanley moving off first.
- 1:23:25K -line waiting. One and one to count. One down.
- 1:23:28One to nothing. Detroit leads. There goes Stanley.
- 1:23:30The ball is swung on a foul back. One ball, two
- 1:23:33strikes. So manager Mayo Smith running the pattern
- 1:23:36through the form. Center's runner. K -line had
- 1:23:40a good cut of the fastball and just got a piece
- 1:23:42of it as it was fouled back. So it's one ball
- 1:23:45and two strikes now. Al K -line, one of four
- 1:23:51Detroit ballplayers to play over 2 ,000 ballgames.
- 1:23:55Cobb, Gerringer, and Crawford ahead of him. Kaline
- 1:23:59with 305 lifetime homers is only one behind the
- 1:24:02all -time homerun slugger for Detroit, Hank Greenberg.
- 1:24:06Here's the 1 -2 pitch fouled off upper deck by
- 1:24:09Kaline. And the count remains one ball and two
- 1:24:12strikes. You must remember, though, that Hank
- 1:24:16Greenberg, who in one year hit 58 homeruns, spent
- 1:24:21four years in the service. and missed a lot of
- 1:24:26home run potential. Hank, who now makes his home
- 1:24:30here in New York. Hall of Famer, one of the great
- 1:24:34guys. Kaline is waiting. One ball, two strikes,
- 1:24:41one out. Stanley moving off first again. The
- 1:24:44pitch to Al is another pitch out, and Gibbs looking
- 1:24:47for Stanley to run once again. So let's see just
- 1:24:51what happens this time. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:24:56A different pattern now. It's a two -strike count
- 1:24:59to Kaline. Stanley at first base. If he goes
- 1:25:05and Kaline doesn't like the pitch and takes it
- 1:25:08for a ball, Stanley will have to get a good jump
- 1:25:10to steal a base. Let's see. He looked like he
- 1:25:14was going, but Marble kept through over to first
- 1:25:16base and Stanley has moved back. Mickey Stanley
- 1:25:22at first. Safe on the air by Gene Michael. 2
- 1:25:27-2 on Kaline. Stanley moving off first again.
- 1:25:30There he goes. Here's the pitch. On the ground.
- 1:25:32Michael is breaking towards second. Comes in,
- 1:25:35flips the mantle in time to get Kaline. And Kaline
- 1:25:38went over first base and it looked as though
- 1:25:41his leg gave way momentarily. And he seems to
- 1:25:46be gimping just a little bit coming back. He
- 1:25:49hit that bag rather hard, and as he did, he sort
- 1:25:53of went down, it appeared, but held on, and as
- 1:25:56he ran back, seemed to gimp just a little bit,
- 1:26:00but we'll have to wait and see if he's okay.
- 1:26:02Down to second base is Stanley. That was a fine
- 1:26:05play, incidentally, by Gene Michaels. He was
- 1:26:07breaking on the cover and then had to come back
- 1:26:09to get the slow grounder. All right, Bill Friend,
- 1:26:15who doubled and popped to second, steps in. Detroit
- 1:26:19leading 1 -0, fifth inning. Mambo Kett to free
- 1:26:22in. In the dirt, gives, blocks it nicely, and
- 1:26:25holds Stanley at second. Well, there's a sign
- 1:26:29on the board. Yankees welcome Pearl Bailey. And
- 1:26:34what a job she's doing, and hello, Dolly. Well,
- 1:26:38that's one of the great, quickie songs of all
- 1:26:40time, I guess. You hear it once, and you go away
- 1:26:46humming it. One and 0 to count now. Frein standing
- 1:26:56in there. Mambo Kett delivers a curve right down
- 1:26:59the middle. One ball, one strike. One ball, one
- 1:27:10strike, two outs. Yankees trailing 1 -0. Mambo
- 1:27:18Kett. Veteran right -hander. His 10th year in
- 1:27:23the big time. Comes set. Checks Stanley. Here's
- 1:27:26the pitch. The free and in the dirt. Another
- 1:27:28nice play by Gibbs. Two balls and one strike.
- 1:27:53Okay, we're all set to go here. Mambo Kett taking
- 1:27:57his time out there. Comes set once again. Free
- 1:28:01and waiting. Here's the 2 -1 pitch. Hit hard
- 1:28:04and deep to left foul. Ooh, baby, was that ball
- 1:28:07plastered. That ball was really hit free and
- 1:28:20jumping out in front of a high slider. Hooked
- 1:28:23it hard and foul. In the fifth inning, Senators
- 1:28:31lead the Indians 1 -0. Third inning, the Cubs
- 1:28:362, Houston nothing. And here, Detroit 1, Yankees
- 1:28:42nothing. There's a 2 -2 pitch foul tip coming
- 1:28:44back on the screen, and the count holds two balls
- 1:28:46and two strikes to free him. Norm Cash waiting
- 1:28:54on deck. Marble Kett has thrown a lot of pitches
- 1:28:59out there. Defense for Frehan. They play him
- 1:29:10deep in the outfield. Infield is about straightaway,
- 1:29:13and the outfield pretty much straightaway. They
- 1:29:15don't play him to pull too much. Here's the 2
- 1:29:17-2 delivery. Sidearm curve, and he gets a little
- 1:29:19piece of that as it's fouled off. For the ball
- 1:29:22boy, just to the left of the Yankee dugout. Crean,
- 1:29:38the only catcher since Mickey Cochran, who caught
- 1:29:42for Detroit, to bat 300. All right, free and
- 1:29:51is waiting. Mambo Kett gets a side from Jake.
- 1:29:56Mambo's set. The next one to free, and oops,
- 1:29:58that ball fouled off his bat. That almost hit
- 1:30:01him. That ball is right around his Adam's apple,
- 1:30:05and he's playing with that right hand of his
- 1:30:09like the ball might have touched his fingers
- 1:30:11off that bat. See, Crean hit .300 back in 1964
- 1:30:17and then had two bad years where he batted only
- 1:30:19.234, but last year bounced back at .282. So
- 1:30:28Crean almost got nailed with a fastball around
- 1:30:32the Adam's apple by Mambo Kettis, digging in
- 1:30:35once again. Stanley at second base, two outs,
- 1:30:38a 2 -2 count. Mambo again, here it comes. It's
- 1:30:41on the corner, strike three, he got him. Three
- 1:30:45in, took it all away, and that's strikeout number
- 1:30:48four for Mambo. For Detroit, no run, no hit,
- 1:30:53one Yankee error, one man left. And the score
- 1:30:57after four and a half, Detroit, one run on six
- 1:30:59hits, the Yankees no runs on no hit. Well, we're
- 1:31:03all set to go here in the bottom of the fifth
- 1:31:05inning, and coming on to tell you all about it
- 1:31:07is the scooter, Phil Rizzuto. All right, thank
- 1:31:11you, Jerry. And we've got quite a ball game going
- 1:31:13on here. Real pitching duel, 1 -0. Yankees still
- 1:31:20looking for their first hit of the ballgame.
- 1:31:23Four innings without a base hit. Gene Michael
- 1:31:27bounced out in front of the plate his first time
- 1:31:30up. Joe Squammer delivers. The pitch is in there.
- 1:31:36Strike one, call. Spalmer's been a little while
- 1:31:45today. He's walked four men. Shows next pitch.
- 1:31:50Ground ball to third. Nice play by Wirth. Fires
- 1:31:53the first one out. That ball almost got by him.
- 1:31:57It would have been a double down the line as
- 1:31:58Gene was trying to go that way. And hit the ball
- 1:32:02sharply. And right now on New York Yankee Baseball,
- 1:32:05we pause for station identification. Join me,
- 1:32:11Harry Downey, weekdays 10 to 11 .30 a .m. here
- 1:32:13on WGY 810 on your dials connected. All right,
- 1:32:23Bill Mambo -Kett. Mambo flying to left field,
- 1:32:26his first time at bat. He was up with runners
- 1:32:28at second and third and two out in the second
- 1:32:30inning. Almost dumped one in a short left field.
- 1:32:34Bomb is pitched, foul, upstairs out of play.
- 1:32:37You know, when Lou Gehrig retired from baseball,
- 1:32:39he told a pack Yankee Stadium, I consider myself
- 1:32:42the luckiest man on the face of the earth. He
- 1:32:45was only 36 then. He was dying and he knew it.
- 1:32:48And there's a great lesson to learn from Lou
- 1:32:49Gehrig. And there are great lessons to learn
- 1:32:52from other baseball immortals. You'll find a
- 1:32:54lot of their stories on the 40 -page baseball
- 1:32:56special in the May Reader's Digest. It's presented
- 1:32:59by Uniroyal, the people who make the rain tire
- 1:33:02especially for wet roads. There's a fly ball
- 1:33:05to left field. Hit well, but right at Northrop,
- 1:33:07it's two out. And it brings up Horace Clark.
- 1:33:13Horace has bounced to short and hit back to the
- 1:33:15box. All right, Clark, the batter. Two out, nobody
- 1:33:31on. 1 -0 Detroit lead. Coach Farmer with a short
- 1:33:40windup. Curve high outside, ball one. On deck,
- 1:33:50Jake Gibbs. Onward, playing in at third base.
- 1:34:00First for ground ball to his left coiler. Up
- 1:34:02with it. Fires to Cash for the out. The Yankees
- 1:34:07are retired in order. Nothing across. And the
- 1:34:11score now, at the end of five full innings, Detroit
- 1:34:15won and the Yankees nothing. Tipperillo asked
- 1:34:19the American people what they thought of the
- 1:34:21world's first menthol cigar. New Tipperillo M
- 1:34:24with menthol. Excuse me, sir. How does the idea
- 1:34:29of a menthol cigar sound to you? Menthol cigar!
- 1:34:36Hello? I'm calling for Tipperillo. We'd like
- 1:34:39your candid opinion about the idea of a menthol
- 1:34:41cigar. Menthol cigar? Pardon me, sir. Yes, would
- 1:34:45you mind rolling down your window? I'd like to
- 1:34:48ask you how the idea of putting menthol in a
- 1:34:50cigar sounds to you. Then we got wise and didn't
- 1:34:54mention our cigar was menthol. Sure. Would you
- 1:34:58mind trying a new taste in cigars from Tipperillo?
- 1:35:00What's in it? Well, here, let me just light it
- 1:35:03up for you. I'm sure you'll... How does it taste?
- 1:35:06Cool, cool. Yeah, kind of refreshing. Oh, that's
- 1:35:10good news. Tastes great. What did you say the
- 1:35:12name of that cigar was? I think we're going to
- 1:35:14have to call it the great taste that sounds terrible.
- 1:35:17New Tipperillo M with Menthol. For Detroit, it'll
- 1:35:26be Norm Cash, Jim Northrup, and Don Wirt to face
- 1:35:29Bill Monboquette. Monbo has allowed six base
- 1:35:37hits. He has not walked anybody, struck out four,
- 1:35:40and has allowed just one run, and that came in
- 1:35:42the fourth inning with one out, Northrup single
- 1:35:45to right. On the hit and run, Don Wirt single
- 1:35:48to center, sending Northrup to third, and then
- 1:35:50Orler hit a sacrifice fly to Bill Robinson in
- 1:35:53center field. It was an unusual play in the sense
- 1:36:00that Jim Northrup at third base did not take
- 1:36:03the customary stance at third with his left foot
- 1:36:06on the bag and looking at the outfielder, he
- 1:36:08put his right foot on the bag and watched the
- 1:36:09coach, Tony Cuccinello, who gave him the sign
- 1:36:12when to run, and I've never seen that before.
- 1:36:16It worked, though. He scored. Cash 0 for 2. Curve
- 1:36:21ball in there. Strike one called. Cash has bounced
- 1:36:23to second and bounced to first. Mayo Smith, the
- 1:36:29Tiger manager, in the same spot that Ralph Houck
- 1:36:32is in the Yankee dugout on the steps of the dugout.
- 1:36:34Low 1 -1. Beautiful day for this doubleheader.
- 1:36:46Good crowd on hand. The 1 -1 pitch on the outside
- 1:36:52corner. And man, that Mambo has been nicking
- 1:36:55those corners. Cash steps back. Talks to DiMuro.
- 1:37:00Norm walks around in a circle whenever he is
- 1:37:03dissatisfied with a call. Hangs his head, shakes
- 1:37:06it a little bit. Still plenty of time for you
- 1:37:11folks listening to get out for the rest of this
- 1:37:13game and all of the second game. Kirk swing and
- 1:37:16a miss as he took something off it. Strikeout
- 1:37:19number five for Mambo. And here is Jim Northrup.
- 1:37:27Bounce to first, single to right field. He has
- 1:37:29scored the game's only run. Pitcher bounce, a
- 1:37:43nice play by Mambo. Backhands and wheels around.
- 1:37:46Throws to Mantle in time for the out. Two up,
- 1:37:50two down. And the batter now downwards. Struck
- 1:37:54out and single to center field. The youngsters
- 1:38:06are out in force today. The pitch by Mambo, curve
- 1:38:16high, ball one. They got the signs around the
- 1:38:20upper deck. All of them from Mickey Mantle. One
- 1:38:26is just a big number seven. And that tells the
- 1:38:30story in itself. Slow curve over. One ball, one
- 1:38:36strike. I think it's worth the price of admission
- 1:38:39just to come out and watch Mambo Kett operate
- 1:38:42on these hitters. That's the sign from Jake Gibbs.
- 1:38:51Slow curve, a little low. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:38:55On deck, Ray Hoyler. Mombo Kett takes no chances
- 1:39:07of getting called for going with his right fingers
- 1:39:10to his mouth. He takes the glove off, holds it
- 1:39:13in the right hand, and then mops his brow or
- 1:39:15his face with the left hand. The 2 -1 pitch popped
- 1:39:21up to the right side mantle, and now Clark calls
- 1:39:25him off it. Clark is there, makes the catch in
- 1:39:28foul territory. And so the Tigers get down in
- 1:39:33order. And the score now, at the end of five
- 1:39:36and a half innings, Detroit won, the Yankees
- 1:39:38nothing. You know, weekends can turn into the
- 1:39:41busiest time of the week. That's the time you
- 1:39:43shop and do necessary household chores. But let's
- 1:39:46face it, weekends should be a time for the whole
- 1:39:47family to be together, a time to relax and enjoy
- 1:39:50yourself. This weekend, for example, why not
- 1:39:53load the family into the car and take off on
- 1:39:55an Atlantic Weekender tour to one of the interesting
- 1:39:57destinations in Atlantic's free Weekender tour
- 1:40:00guides. In case you're not familiar with the
- 1:40:02tour guides, let me tell you about them. They're
- 1:40:04more than just trips. These one -day and weekend
- 1:40:07planned tours to nearby exciting and unusual
- 1:40:09locations not only tell you how to get there,
- 1:40:12but they point out what to see on the way and
- 1:40:14what to do once you arrive. These weekender tour
- 1:40:17guides are free, of course. Just stop in at any
- 1:40:20Atlantic station and ask for one. And while you're
- 1:40:22there, fill up with Atlantic Imperial, the gasoline
- 1:40:24that cleans the throttle plate area of your carburetor
- 1:40:27as you drive and keeps it clean. You'll find
- 1:40:30the going's great. when you travel the Imperial
- 1:40:33Road with Atlantic Imperial, the clean carburetor
- 1:40:36gasoline. Jake Gibbs leads it off for the Yankees
- 1:40:53here in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gibbs
- 1:40:56has popped the third and bounced to the shortstop.
- 1:41:02An airplane flew out on the field, and Bill Freon
- 1:41:06is picking it up, putting it in his pocket. All
- 1:41:14right, the Yankees looking for their first hit
- 1:41:15in the ballgame. Detroit leading 1 -0. Joe Spalmer
- 1:41:23out on the mound. Spalmer's pitch to Gibbs, outside
- 1:41:27ball one. On deck, Mickey Mantle. There's the
- 1:41:41windup. Pitch right in there. Strike called.
- 1:41:461 -1. Farmer really chewing that gum out on the
- 1:41:54mound. He's blowing bubbles. I thought he was
- 1:41:58blowing bubbles out there. The pitch, a bouncer
- 1:42:00over his head, off his glove, Oiler in, up with
- 1:42:02it. What a first base they got him. A good play
- 1:42:07as Farmer deflected the ball just enough so that
- 1:42:11Orla could make the play over the bag. And the
- 1:42:14batter, Mickey Mantle. hitter going for five
- 1:42:32in the third inning is so relaxed out of the
- 1:42:36mound, he's blowing bubbles. The pitch to Mickey
- 1:42:40Mantle, outside ball one. Mickey has walked and
- 1:42:43reached on an error. The ball that could have
- 1:42:48been given a base hit as Cash had to go to his
- 1:42:50right on a hard hit ground ball. He knocked it
- 1:42:52down, but couldn't hold on. Another bounce is
- 1:42:55slowly to first base. And Cash! Picks it up and
- 1:42:59steps on the bag for the unassisted put out.
- 1:43:04Mickey went down that line in a hurry. Two outs.
- 1:43:08And Nevada Rohrwhite, who has bounced hard to
- 1:43:10second base, both times he's been up there. Nobody
- 1:43:42on. Detroit leads 1 -0. The pitch to White is
- 1:43:44low. Ball one. Thought we had a Frenchman in
- 1:43:56our booth for a minute there, but it's Ernie
- 1:43:57Harwell with his little French hat on. There's
- 1:44:01a curve over strike called. On deck, Bill Robinson.
- 1:44:10Ward plays in at third. Bama's pitch high. Two
- 1:44:14balls and a strike. Bama, like Mamba Kett, makes
- 1:44:27his time out on the mound. Gets the sign from
- 1:44:32Friend. Here's the windup. The pitch, a foul
- 1:44:35off the plate and hit wide in the leg. Evens
- 1:44:40the count at 2 -2. Two balls, two strikes, two
- 1:44:48outs. All right, Joe Sparma getting ready out
- 1:44:57on the mound. His pitch is hit down the left
- 1:45:03field line, but curving. Just missed hitting
- 1:45:09the foul ball. That ball went pretty far. And
- 1:45:13it's two balls, two strikes. Well, Dale Long,
- 1:45:16our old buddy, would have been the first left
- 1:45:19-hand catcher in baseball if they'd let him.
- 1:45:21How you doing, Dale? Thanks, Bill. Great. Good.
- 1:45:23Now, isn't that true that you were trying out
- 1:45:25with the Pirates, was it, catching left -handers?
- 1:45:28In 1951, Mr. Rickey tried to make a left -handed
- 1:45:30catcher out of me. Well, there's no rule against
- 1:45:32it, is there? No, not actually. I think it's
- 1:45:34just a matter of complicating and custom. Why,
- 1:45:39it is a 2 -2 pitch to White. Line drive wide
- 1:45:42at downward for the hour. So, it's three up,
- 1:45:48three down, and the score now at the end of six
- 1:45:50full innings, the Tigers won and the Yankees
- 1:45:54nothing. Well, as we told you, we're talking
- 1:45:55with Dale Long here, and Dale, you left baseball,
- 1:45:59you started to make umpiring a career, and what
- 1:46:02happened? It's not an easy transition, Phil.
- 1:46:07I don't know. I just felt like last year I was
- 1:46:10in the International League and Jim Bowden come
- 1:46:12down to pitch. Well, Jim was a teammate of mine.
- 1:46:14Well, you know who's going to get the break from
- 1:46:15me. And I was no kid going into it. I just didn't
- 1:46:23care for it that much. I work for Susan Roebuck
- 1:46:26now, and I got a good job with them. Not on the
- 1:46:29basis of Ted Williams. Well, I just want to mention
- 1:46:31Williamson Farmer. I'm a peon. I work. Well,
- 1:46:34you're in good company, though, and, you know,
- 1:46:36a little of that might rub off, Bill. Right,
- 1:46:38but I sure miss baseball, Bill. Oh, I guess you
- 1:46:40do. It's a great affiliation. It certainly has
- 1:46:43been, and it always gives you good entree into
- 1:46:45places where you might not be able to get. I
- 1:46:48run a sports program, too, you know. No kidding?
- 1:46:50Oh, wonderful. This is out of the Albany station
- 1:46:52up in Albany, New York. Do you ever see Jeff
- 1:46:55Davis up there when you're up there? I sure do.
- 1:46:57Are you on the same station with Jeff? No, he's
- 1:46:58on another WEE, and I'm WPTR. Jeff just got another
- 1:47:03job, and he's doing very well. I know he is,
- 1:47:06and he's a great man. But that's interesting.
- 1:47:09Is it a regular sport cast? Do you give scores
- 1:47:12or interviews? Five minutes a night, five nights
- 1:47:15a week. And it's all new to me, believe me. I
- 1:47:18said it. Stick with it, because it's a wonderful
- 1:47:20thing to do. And it keeps you in contact with
- 1:47:23all the sports anyway. We're getting ready for
- 1:47:27the top of the seventh inning. Mambo's first
- 1:47:29pitch to Orla. Hit high in the air to center
- 1:47:31field. Robinson going back. Backpedaling fast.
- 1:47:34He's there now and makes the catch. And Orla
- 1:47:38hit that ball over 400 feet. But that's Death
- 1:47:40Valley here at Yankee Stadium. And it's a long
- 1:47:43out, one away. Orla one for one. Brings up Joe
- 1:47:46Sparma. Bounce to short and bounce to third.
- 1:48:03All right, Mambo turns around. Wants to make
- 1:48:05sure that Robinson has come back from that long
- 1:48:07run in center field. Here's the first pitch.
- 1:48:12And it's popped foul in back of the plate near
- 1:48:15the screen. Gibbs coming back and makes the catch
- 1:48:18right in front of the screen. And, Dale, that's
- 1:48:21got to be one of the toughest plays for a catcher.
- 1:48:23Sure is. In fact, it's a good one to make there
- 1:48:26because the ball is coming back into him. Jake
- 1:48:29played it real well. He did. You know, Bill Kane
- 1:48:33put a piece of gum down there, and he says Dale
- 1:48:35put his gum on the table just like he used to
- 1:48:37put on the cap. So you and I were from that same
- 1:48:40school, huh? Putting the gum on the button of
- 1:48:41the cap? Listen, Bill, my father used to bring
- 1:48:44me out and watch you play in St. Louis. That's
- 1:48:47where I first saw the gum on the cap. Okay, buddy.
- 1:48:52Here's Dick McCullough. Struck out, hit to the
- 1:48:55box, and was thrown out by Jake Yip. 0 for 3
- 1:48:58for McCullough. Two out, nobody on. 1 -0 Detroit
- 1:49:01leads top of the set. A wind -up by Mambo. His
- 1:49:08curve is low. Ball one. By the way, does that
- 1:49:10record that you held still hold hitting consecutive
- 1:49:15home runs in consecutive days? It sure does.
- 1:49:17How many? It was eight in eight games. Eight
- 1:49:20in eight games. Everything I got going for me.
- 1:49:24If they break that, then I can fly. Well, listen,
- 1:49:27that's quite a record. That's pretty tough to
- 1:49:28break. Well, I was very, very fortunate. No,
- 1:49:32no. When you get on a hot streak, though, I guess
- 1:49:34you don't care who's pitching or where the ball
- 1:49:36is. That's true. Very true. All right, two balls,
- 1:49:40no strikes on McCullough. We're talking with
- 1:49:41Dale Long. The 2 -0 delivery. He runs up to Butt,
- 1:49:47takes it, and man, Gibbs and Mambo didn't like
- 1:49:50that call. I was talking to Ralph Houseville
- 1:49:53about this ballpark. Isn't it beautiful? Oh,
- 1:49:55it is. And they've really fixed it up. It is,
- 1:49:59even before they repainted it and refurbished
- 1:50:01it. But it still gives everybody a big thrill.
- 1:50:04And those rookies, when they first come in, they
- 1:50:06almost faint. The 3 -0 pitch right down the middle.
- 1:50:09Strike call, 3 -1. A well -pitten call game by
- 1:50:18Mambo Kidd and Sparma. Sparma with the edge right
- 1:50:22now, a 1 -0 lead. Slow curve is in there, and
- 1:50:27McCullough bluffed a bunt. It's 3 -2. Something
- 1:50:34you never used to see in the old days, Dale,
- 1:50:36a 3 -1 pitch in a slow curve ball. That's where
- 1:50:39the whole trend comes today. Really, it's baffling
- 1:50:43how these boys can throw it like that. You used
- 1:50:45to go to the fastball. Oh, sure. Here's the payoff
- 1:50:48pitch. Another slow curve popped up. Bill Robinson
- 1:50:52and Roy White effort. Robinson calls. and makes
- 1:50:56the catch. So, again, it's three up and three
- 1:50:59down, and the score now, at the end of six and
- 1:51:03a half innings, Detroit one and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:51:08Hey, kids, and old -timers, too, how would you
- 1:51:10like to hear the voice of the Babe or the Iron
- 1:51:12Horse, Demage, Reynolds, Roth, and Ruffing, all
- 1:51:15the other Yankee greats, merely by picking up
- 1:51:17a phone and listening? Well, it's just that easy.
- 1:51:20The Yankee Hall of Fame at Yankee Stadium is
- 1:51:22filled with the voices of Yankee players who
- 1:51:25were the glory of their time. Just wait until
- 1:51:27you hear the play -by -play account of Mickey
- 1:51:29hitting his 500th homer or Casey telling you
- 1:51:31about his greatest baseball thrill or the great
- 1:51:34Lou Gehrig making his sad farewell to baseball.
- 1:51:36Don't miss your chance to hear the most unforgettable
- 1:51:39moments in baseball as told by baseball's most
- 1:51:42unforgettable heroes. You can hear them in the
- 1:51:45Yankee Hall of Fame at Yankee Stadium. And just
- 1:51:49a word to you moms and dads listening, when you
- 1:51:51bring the youngsters out to Yankee Stadium to
- 1:51:53see the Yankees this year, they'll have a chance
- 1:51:54to see Mickey Mantle and all the greats of today.
- 1:51:57Be sure to take those youngsters by the Hall
- 1:51:59of Fame. Let them listen to the voices of some
- 1:52:01of the greatest ballplayers of all time. Well,
- 1:52:15we get ready for the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:52:17It'll be Bill Robinson, Steve Whitaker, and Bobby
- 1:52:20Cox to face Joe Farmer. Robinson walked and bounced
- 1:52:24to the shortstop. You can hear the youngsters
- 1:52:26yelling here, and there are lots of them here
- 1:52:29today. Cap day today at Yankee Stadium. They're
- 1:52:32all waving their Yankee caps. The pitch to Robinson,
- 1:52:36almost hit him. Man, he had to jump back in a
- 1:52:39hurry. Ball one. But we told his farming he liked
- 1:52:43to use that brushback pitch. But at least he
- 1:52:46keeps it from the shoulders on down. Here's the
- 1:52:511 -0 delivery. Hits a short left field, and that
- 1:52:54ball's going to drop in for the first hit for
- 1:52:56the Yankees. Robinson trying to throw, and he's
- 1:53:01out at second base, and he's arguing down there.
- 1:53:05A close play at second base, and what a throw
- 1:53:08by Jim Northrup. The tag by McCullough. It had
- 1:53:14to be a perfect throw. And Robinson didn't think
- 1:53:18he was out. But Jim Northrup threw a strike to
- 1:53:23Dittmer, call up, and Robinson is out trying
- 1:53:26to stretch the single or double. Man, he called
- 1:53:32that play quick down there. Ooh, I'd hate to
- 1:53:34be an umpire on that one, Dale. I don't know.
- 1:53:37They teach you to wait that little instant. You
- 1:53:40know, for Baker's call, he seemed like he had
- 1:53:42his arm up before he even got there. And that's
- 1:53:44the tough thing for umpires. They make a decision
- 1:53:47sometimes beforehand, and they call it automatically.
- 1:53:51Guys only count horseshoes. Yes, you're right.
- 1:53:54There's a strike to Whitaker who has walked twice.
- 1:53:58But that's interesting. They do teach you to
- 1:54:00hesitate before you make that call. Right. You've
- 1:54:04got to have that hesitation there and let it
- 1:54:06happen. Let it happen first. Right, another curve
- 1:54:09over strike two, and Whittaker didn't like that
- 1:54:11call. Well, I noticed it with several of the
- 1:54:13umpires now behind the plate. And for a while,
- 1:54:16I was jumping the gun. I'd say ball one, but
- 1:54:21then like Humont and a couple other ones, they'll
- 1:54:23wait that fraction of a second and then put the
- 1:54:25right hand up. So I had to time myself with them.
- 1:54:28That's good. You know, that's why they go to
- 1:54:29spring training, too. They have to pick up their
- 1:54:31timing just like the players do. Right. It's
- 1:54:33not as easy to just come out of bed. And call
- 1:54:35a pitch. All right. All right. Two strikes on
- 1:54:37Whitaker. One out. Nobody on. Curve. Bounce to
- 1:54:41the right side. McAuliffe comes in. One hand
- 1:54:43to flip to Cash in time. But the Yankees get
- 1:54:48their first set of the game. Bill Robinson trying
- 1:54:50to stretch it into a double is thrown out on
- 1:54:53a very close play at second base. Here's Bobby
- 1:54:56Cox. Bounce to third. Hit into a double play.
- 1:55:03Are there any kids around, Darrell, that you
- 1:55:05umpired against that are up in the big leagues
- 1:55:07now? Oh, yes. Mike Ferraro was at Syracuse last
- 1:55:11year and Toledo the year before. Bill Robinson.
- 1:55:16Ray Oiler was at Syracuse two years ago. Sure,
- 1:55:20a great heartwarming to see these fellows make
- 1:55:22it. So just what I was going to say, it must
- 1:55:24be wonderful to see these kids in the minors,
- 1:55:27raw rookies, and then... develop enough to get
- 1:55:30to the big leagues. Oh, yeah. They have a lot
- 1:55:32of them. Steve Womack, a lot of the Yankee pitchers
- 1:55:35go down to the International League. Uh -huh.
- 1:55:39All right, Bobby Cox has a count of no balls
- 1:55:41and two strikes on him with two outs. Nobody
- 1:55:44on here in the bottom of the seventh, and the
- 1:55:46Tigers leading one to nothing. The Tigers scored
- 1:55:48that one run in the fourth inning. Bobby Cox
- 1:55:51is funny, Phil. He was at Richmond last year
- 1:55:54when I was down there, and if a ball comes in
- 1:55:56and he thinks it's a ball, he hollers, no. No
- 1:55:58kidding. The umpires themselves. It was really
- 1:56:00shocked me when he first did it to me. Uh -huh.
- 1:56:03Here's the two -strike pitch. A bouncing ball
- 1:56:06foul. Frank Crescetti. One hand at the old cross.
- 1:56:09Hasn't missed one yet. He hasn't missed one.
- 1:56:11It doesn't look the same as when he broke in
- 1:56:12in 31. You remember that, right? Oh, come on.
- 1:56:15He sure hasn't changed. No, he hasn't. Still
- 1:56:200 -2 on Bobby Cox. Being an umpire, though, I
- 1:56:29imagine you don't like the ballplayers arguing
- 1:56:32too much on pitches. I mean, the fans start getting
- 1:56:34on you then, don't they? Well, they're a little
- 1:56:37more understanding. I think I was more understanding
- 1:56:38than most of the umpires. I know how tough it
- 1:56:40is to get up here, Phil. It's not easy. Right.
- 1:56:43The pitch, a curve, and he sits down. It's high
- 1:56:46and inside, one ball, two strikes. You don't
- 1:56:48mind a legitimate break, but a fellow that's
- 1:56:50trying to find it out, he's not going to make
- 1:56:52a goat out of you, and that's the guys you look
- 1:56:54out for. By the way, what did you say you did
- 1:56:59with Sears robots? I'm in commercial sales. I
- 1:57:02sell for them. Oh. Everything? We got 200 ,000
- 1:57:07items. Why, here's the one -two delivery. Low
- 1:57:12ball two, two and two. On deck, Gene Michael.
- 1:57:27Palmer into the windup. The pitch. There's a
- 1:57:30base hit to left field. Bobby Cox gets his first
- 1:57:33major league base hit of the Yankees. A bullet
- 1:57:36to left field. Man, I bet he's happy. That first
- 1:57:41hit. That first hit sometimes is a long time
- 1:57:45coming. And we're going to have a pinch hit.
- 1:57:51Tommy Tresh is coming up to bat for Gene Michael.
- 1:57:58So Fran goes out to the mound and talks with
- 1:58:01Farmer. So the Tigers got a big break here when
- 1:58:03Bill Robinson's singling, leading off the inning,
- 1:58:06tried to stretch it into a double and was thrown
- 1:58:08out. So it's two out now with Bobby Cox at first
- 1:58:13base. Bobby walking around down there. I don't
- 1:58:15know whether he pulled a muscle or anything.
- 1:58:17But now Tommy Trey is batting for Gene Michael.
- 1:58:23Gene was 0 -2 while he was in there. Tommy's
- 1:58:27been about 46 times, 7 hits, 1 double, 1 homer.
- 1:58:30He has 7 RBI. 1 -0 Detroit lead. Fresh steps
- 1:58:42in. Pounding the bat on the plate. Cash holds
- 1:58:48first against Cox. Here's the stretch. The pitch
- 1:58:56low. Ball one. Do you remember your first big
- 1:58:59league hit? Oh, I'll never forget it. It was
- 1:59:02a bunt against the Philadelphia Athletics when
- 1:59:04they were in. Pete Sulu was playing third. Do
- 1:59:07you? No, I remember mine. Who'd you get it off?
- 1:59:11Evo Blackwell. Oh, well, you were left -handed.
- 1:59:14Not too many right -handers got hit on him. The
- 1:59:17pitch, a foul at the plate. It hit Tommy in the
- 1:59:19leg. One ball, one strike. How many clubs did
- 1:59:24you play with, Dale, in your Major League career?
- 1:59:27Six. Six? And five in the National, one in the
- 1:59:30American? No, I was two. I played with Washington.
- 1:59:33Oh, that's right. I'm on the expansion now. Uh
- 1:59:35-huh. When they had the expanding clubs. Right.
- 1:59:37How long were you with the Yankees? I was here
- 1:59:40twice, three years. Did a great job pinch hitting.
- 1:59:46I remember that. All right, Cox leads the way
- 1:59:48at first base. The stretch. The pitch outside.
- 1:59:53Two balls and a strike. Tigers 1, Yankees nothing.
- 2:00:02Tigers with six hits, Yankees with two. Each
- 2:00:04team has made one error. On deck, Bill Mambo
- 2:00:08-Kett. The stretch by Palmer. Cox leads away.
- 2:00:17Powell's tip off the shin guard of Bill Tran.
- 2:00:21The count is even at two and two. Two balls,
- 2:00:24two strikes, and two outs. Oh, a new ball thrown
- 2:00:31out to Joe Spalmer. Another big ball game to
- 2:00:36go after this one. Joe Spalmer still nonchalantly
- 2:00:48blowing bubbles out of the mound. Leans in to
- 2:00:53get the sign. Now he's ready. His pitch inside,
- 2:01:00and Tommy almost stepped into that fast one.
- 2:01:02It's three balls, two strikes. Cox will be off
- 2:01:05with the pitch, which gives the Yankees a little
- 2:01:07edge right here. He'll be running. Quick score
- 2:01:10on a long single. Cash now moves in back of the
- 2:01:17runner at first base. Got to be careful here.
- 2:01:19They might put a play on. Now we're ready for
- 2:01:25the payoff pitch. There goes Cox. The curve is
- 2:01:29swung at and missed. Strike three. As he changed
- 2:01:33up on a curve ball and had Trish out in front.
- 2:01:36It's all for the Yankees. No runs. Two hits.
- 2:01:40No tag errors. One man left. And at the end of
- 2:01:44seven full innings, it's Detroit one and the
- 2:01:47Yankees nothing. If you were born poor. In a
- 2:01:53city slum or a migrant worker camp, a worn -out
- 2:01:56farm or an Indian reservation, your whole perspective
- 2:02:00is different. You think of the rest of America
- 2:02:02as something quite separate from you. What do
- 2:02:05the people out there know about you? What do
- 2:02:07they care? Well, there are men and women, young
- 2:02:11and old, who care enough to spend a year of their
- 2:02:15lives full -time concentrating on spreading around
- 2:02:18some opportunity. They are VISTA volunteers.
- 2:02:22Lucky people who've had the breaks and who want
- 2:02:26to help give somebody else a break. Uncle Sam
- 2:02:28pays them $50 a month plus expenses so they don't
- 2:02:31do it for the money. They do it because they
- 2:02:34want to be a part of making America greater still.
- 2:02:38Vista. Volunteers in service to America. Write
- 2:02:42to Vista Box B, Washington, D .C. We're open
- 2:02:49tomorrow, all right? has gone in to play shortstop
- 2:02:51in place of Gene Michaels. Right now on New York
- 2:02:56Yankee Baseball, we pause for station identification.
- 2:03:01Harry Downey asks you to join me weekdays, 3
- 2:03:04to 6 p .m. here on WGY 810 on your dials connected.
- 2:03:15All right, Mickey Stanley has struck out singular
- 2:03:17center and reached on an error. Right -hand batter.
- 2:03:26Mambo's pitch, a bouncer foul to the left of
- 2:03:28the plate. Strike one. Bobby Cox hustles in to
- 2:03:31pick it up. Outfield straightaway on Stanley.
- 2:03:47On deck, Al Kaline. Pitch by Mambo, sidearm curve,
- 2:03:53foul down the left field line, going back into
- 2:03:56the stands and out of play. Nothing in two. Tony,
- 2:04:04we've been chatting here with Dale Long a little
- 2:04:06bit. Dale, you look in as good a shape as you
- 2:04:08did when you were playing. What are you doing?
- 2:04:10Well, I got a few gray hairs, Bill. No, I don't
- 2:04:13mean I got them, too. I mean you're... Your body
- 2:04:16looks pretty good. Well, I play a little golf.
- 2:04:19I enjoy the crowd. No kidding. Left -handed?
- 2:04:21Oh, yeah. I'm a hacker. The pitch is just outside.
- 2:04:25One ball, two strikes. You ever run into Ted
- 2:04:30Williams when he travels? Yes, Ted comes around
- 2:04:33once in a while. I've talked to him a couple
- 2:04:35times. He's put on a few puns. Yes, I noticed.
- 2:04:39He's a little roly -poly right now. I've been
- 2:04:42very active up in, I now live up in Albany, New
- 2:04:45York, Saratoga County. And I pull around a little
- 2:04:51bit of basketball and baseball now. It's in season.
- 2:04:55It's a nice part of the country. My daughter
- 2:04:57went to school there for a while at Skidmore
- 2:04:59up in that area. It's a good thing you know now
- 2:05:02because my son goes to Union. And they have a
- 2:05:05shuttle between Union College and Skidmore. Check
- 2:05:09swing, ground ball, a mantle at first. Mickey's
- 2:05:11up with it. He'll step on the bag. And it's one
- 2:05:14away. By the way, have you seen Mickey at first
- 2:05:16base at all other than this game? No. He looks
- 2:05:20better and better over there. I got a letter
- 2:05:23from him last year, and he said I had it so followed
- 2:05:25up nobody could play it. But he said he finally
- 2:05:27smoothed it out, and now it's all right again.
- 2:05:30But he has surprised so many people with his
- 2:05:33play at first base. Well, it's the most vulnerable
- 2:05:38spot. It can be played by most anybody. And Mickey's
- 2:05:42very adaptive baseball. I think he could do anything
- 2:05:44if he put his heart to it. Oh, yes. Anyway. Al
- 2:05:47Kaline, a single fly to center bounce is short.
- 2:05:50Takes the pitch a little high. Ball one. Yeah.
- 2:05:59Mambo gets the sign from Gibbs. Pitch swing and
- 2:06:03a foul tip and it makes Gibbs. One ball, one
- 2:06:07strike. Jake flinched a little bit. Jake's got
- 2:06:09the meat in there again. He's got a magnet in
- 2:06:13that hand of his. He gets hit with more foul
- 2:06:15tips. Shaking hands with him is like shaking
- 2:06:18hands with a bag full of walnuts. Most catches
- 2:06:22are like that, don't you agree? The best one
- 2:06:25I've seen is Jim Hegan. Oh, he was great. As
- 2:06:28they slow ground ball to third, it kicks foul.
- 2:06:31They would not have gotten K -line on that one.
- 2:06:33Cox was playing deep. It's one ball, two strikes.
- 2:06:35That's right. Jim was one of the most graceful
- 2:06:39catchers. He reminded me a lot of Bill Dickey
- 2:06:40behind the plate. Played like a shortstop, really.
- 2:06:43There was none of this bulwark of blocking the
- 2:06:45ball. But you remember he caught four 20 -game
- 2:06:48winners and 11 and 13. I remember. We had to
- 2:06:51face them. One right after the other. You never
- 2:06:54had a breather with those guys. He was a picture
- 2:06:56catcher. Yes, he was. All right. It's one ball,
- 2:07:01two strikes on Kaline. One out. As nobody on,
- 2:07:04Detroit leads 1 -0 in the top of the eighth.
- 2:07:09Pitched by Mambo. Foul back off the screen. On
- 2:07:16deck, Bill Friend. Now the wind -up. Curve is
- 2:07:32low and outside. Two and two. Two balls, two
- 2:07:38strikes, one out. Mambo ready again. A slow curve
- 2:07:48hit on the ground hard. Cox, nice play. A long
- 2:07:51throw. In time to get Kaline. And Bobby Cox did
- 2:07:56not flinch. That ball was hit like a bullet.
- 2:07:58One hop. Bobby got his body right in front of
- 2:08:01the ball, put his glove right at the belt, and
- 2:08:03it was right in there. Two out and three in the
- 2:08:06batter. Three in his double, popped the second,
- 2:08:08and struck out. Big right -hand hitting catcher.
- 2:08:22On deck, Norm Cash. Here's the pitch to Frehan.
- 2:08:28It's on the inside corner. Strike one call. It's
- 2:08:34a shame, but this could be the last inning of
- 2:08:36pitching for Bill Monboquette. He is scheduled
- 2:08:38to lead off in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:08:43He's had quite a year for the Yankees. The one
- 2:08:47-strike pitch. A bounce to the third base. Cox
- 2:08:49has the ball. Fires to Mantle in time. Another
- 2:08:53one, two, three inning, the third in a row for
- 2:08:56Mambo against Detroit. And the score now at the
- 2:08:59end of seven and a half innings, Detroit won
- 2:09:01and the Yankees nothing. Well, we're talking
- 2:09:05with Dale Long up here, and Dale has just taken
- 2:09:08a bite of a delicious sandwich that I'm going
- 2:09:10to do when this game is over. I'll never forget
- 2:09:12the day I was playing out here in a doubleheader,
- 2:09:14and some guy walked out, and I turned around,
- 2:09:16he scared me, he was on the field. And he had
- 2:09:18a Civil War uniform on. He says, where's those
- 2:09:21damn Yankees? No kidding. We had some characters
- 2:09:24run out on the field. Right now, here's a pretty
- 2:09:28good young ball player, Andy Kosko, who will
- 2:09:30be pinch hitting for Bill Mambo Kess. So Mambo
- 2:09:35worth eight real fine innings again. He allowed
- 2:09:39six hits. He did not walk a man, struck out five,
- 2:09:43and allowed just the one run. So Andy Kosko comes
- 2:09:45on. The Yankees trailing by one here in the bottom
- 2:09:49of the eighth inning. Andy has been up six times
- 2:09:55with two base hits. Takes the curve over, strike
- 2:09:58one call. Andy has not started a game. He has
- 2:10:03been used just as a pinch hitter. Outfield plays
- 2:10:10him straight away. Can't score right hand batter.
- 2:10:20The one strike pitch, a curve low. He checked
- 2:10:22his swing in time. One ball, one strike. Farmer
- 2:10:34gets the sign from Friend. Rocks back. Best ball.
- 2:10:39Base hit to center field. Costco hit a bullet
- 2:10:42right up the middle. So, Andy's third pinch hit
- 2:10:48this year. The third hit off Farmer. And now
- 2:10:52the top of the Yankee order. Horace Clark, Jake
- 2:10:55Gibson, Mickey Mantle to follow. Ralph Falk has
- 2:11:00said so often one reason the Yankees are playing
- 2:11:03so much better balls is because of the bench
- 2:11:05he has right now. It's the best bench he's had
- 2:11:07since 1964. That was the year that Yogi Berra
- 2:11:12managed the Yankees to a pennant, their last
- 2:11:14one. All right, Horace Clark, 0 -3 in the ballgame.
- 2:11:17Bounced a short, twice, hit back to the box.
- 2:11:20Work moves into third base. Costco leads the
- 2:11:23way. Here's the stretch. The pitch. He squares.
- 2:11:26Bumps the ball. It's a dandy. Farmer has to go
- 2:11:28to first. In time, almost threw the ball in a
- 2:11:31right field, but the sacrifice is successful.
- 2:11:34They've moved Costco to second base. The play
- 2:11:38goes from one to four. The pitcher to the second
- 2:11:40baseman covering. And it brings up Jake Gitt.
- 2:11:57All right, Jake gives the batter. Jake has popped
- 2:12:02the third, bounced it short, and then was robbed
- 2:12:06of a base hit on a fine play by Ray Oil. Andy
- 2:12:09Kosko, the potential time run at second base,
- 2:12:12and on deck, Mickey Mantle. The crowd is building
- 2:12:15up for when Mantle comes to the plate. He pitched
- 2:12:20to Gibbs, a bouncer right back to Palmer. He
- 2:12:22wheels. Throws to first, so he had. Costco hung
- 2:12:25up between second and third, but did not throw.
- 2:12:28And here comes Mantle. Mickey Mantle, or his
- 2:12:54walk, reached on an error and bounced to first.
- 2:12:58Pascoe at second was too odd. We're in the bottom
- 2:13:00of the eighth. Detroit leading 1 -0. Here's a
- 2:13:04stretch by Spalmer. His pitch. Ah, he's right.
- 2:13:08The deep left field. Way back. Way back. in deep
- 2:13:23left field, and the ball game is tied up, one
- 2:13:27apiece. Holy cow, did he hit that one in the
- 2:13:33opposite field. That ball was over 400 feet.
- 2:13:40It bounced on the running track and then into
- 2:13:43the bleachers. It looked like it went in on a
- 2:13:45fly. The ball game is tied up, 1 -1, and this
- 2:13:49crowd is standing here at... Oh, man, did he
- 2:13:55tag that one. No. And you just heard the echo
- 2:14:05of that blast, that mantle hit of Firecracker.
- 2:14:08Here comes Mayo Smith out. It'll give me a chance
- 2:14:12to catch my breath. One of the longest opposite
- 2:14:16field baseballs ever hit. That ball was close
- 2:14:22to 450 feet to left field. It took one bounce
- 2:14:27over the auxiliary scoreboard and into the bleachers,
- 2:14:30and Farmer is coming out. And that's enough to
- 2:14:34shake anybody up. Mickey Mantle. I mean, you
- 2:14:41just can't say enough about this guy. Holy cow,
- 2:14:46did he hit that one, and they want a new pitcher
- 2:14:48out there. So the Yankees now were hitless up
- 2:14:58to the seventh inning when they got two hits,
- 2:15:01Robinson and Cox, but didn't score. Here in the
- 2:15:03eighth, Andy Kosko started the rally. Pink hitting
- 2:15:07for Bill Monboquette. And Kosko lined a single
- 2:15:11to center. Then Clark sacrificed in the second.
- 2:15:14Gibbs hit back to the box. Kosko held second.
- 2:15:17And on the first pitch to Mantle. Mickey hit
- 2:15:20one nine miles to left field. It took one bounce
- 2:15:23into the bleachers. And the ball game is tied
- 2:15:27up with two outs. Mantle at second and Roy White
- 2:15:32the batter and a new pitcher coming in for the
- 2:15:36Tigers. Well, Mr. Long, have you ever seen any
- 2:15:40ball or many balls hit to the opposite field
- 2:15:43that far? I saw a couple of them and he hit them
- 2:15:46all. Okay, you scared me there for a second,
- 2:15:51because I can never remember one being hit to
- 2:15:53the opposite field that far, outside of Mantle.
- 2:15:57I'm not talking about the homers he hit World
- 2:15:59Series in Pittsburgh and in Ebbets Field and
- 2:16:03in every place he played. He hit him a long way.
- 2:16:07I saw him hit one in Cleveland one day the same
- 2:16:10way, opposite with right -handed, though. And
- 2:16:12he hit it on top of the Cleveland bullpen. That's
- 2:16:15right. I remember that one. He's awful strong.
- 2:16:19Well, I'm glad I came today to witness that.
- 2:16:22Well, I'm glad you came because you said you
- 2:16:25were the good luck charm for Cox to get his first
- 2:16:27base hit. And you're here now with Mantle hitting
- 2:16:30that tremendous double. And John Warden is coming
- 2:16:36on. Jonathan Edgar Warden Jr. Six feet tall,
- 2:16:42205 pounds. He's only played three years of professional
- 2:16:47ball. In 66, he was with Daytona Beach. In 67,
- 2:16:51with Waukee Mountain. He has won three and lost
- 2:16:56none. And he's only been in three ballgames.
- 2:17:00This is his fourth appearance of the year. He's
- 2:17:03only pitched a total of three and a third innings.
- 2:17:08Has not allowed a run. Has allowed just one hit.
- 2:17:12Walked two, struck out one. Man, I'd say he came
- 2:17:16in at the right time and got the job done, Dal.
- 2:17:19Many times, it looks like. Maybe we can tie one
- 2:17:24on him here, Phil. Make them three in one. Would
- 2:17:28you do a little talk and do tell some stories
- 2:17:30or sell some Sears merchandise while I get my
- 2:17:32breath back? I yelled so loud on that ball mantel
- 2:17:35hit first I thought it was in the seat. But then
- 2:17:38I got dizzy, you know, I have low blood pressure
- 2:17:39and I yelled too loud and jumped up too quick.
- 2:17:42You didn't jump very high because you're not
- 2:17:44too big, you know. It's sure great to be down
- 2:17:49here, Phil, and see this fine crowd that turned
- 2:17:51out today for a cap day at United Stadium. That's
- 2:17:53another thing you did. You brought the biggest
- 2:17:55crowd of the year here. I don't know. I like
- 2:17:58to come down here during the week when it's all
- 2:18:00nice and quiet and you got it to yourself, but
- 2:18:03these kids today are really having the ball.
- 2:18:05Oh, they are. There's no better place to bring
- 2:18:07kids, you know, down into a ballpark. Really,
- 2:18:10that's quite an education. And they really enjoy
- 2:18:13themselves. I brought three little boys with
- 2:18:15me today. Did you? Yeah. Bobby and Craig Bauer
- 2:18:18and Joey Rossetti from Albany. Sure. And they're
- 2:18:22sitting down here in the box seats. I can't get
- 2:18:24them to come with me because they're enjoying
- 2:18:26the game too much. All right, here's Roy White
- 2:18:28batting right -handed against Lawton. He takes
- 2:18:30the pitch. High ball one. Mickey Mantle at second
- 2:18:35base. Mickey ties the ball game up. With a tremendous
- 2:18:42double. Roy White is 0 -3 in the ballgame. The
- 2:18:51pitch is low, ball two. Two balls. Appropriate
- 2:18:56sign up here, Phil. Socket to him, Nick. Yes,
- 2:18:59he did. Well, you know, all those signs out there,
- 2:19:02there's one up there that he just narrowly missed.
- 2:19:05He said, get your 522nd homer today. And he came
- 2:19:08as close as you could without making it a home
- 2:19:11run. Any other ball, park a home run. The 2 -0
- 2:19:15pitch to White. A base hit to left field. Mickey
- 2:19:17Mantle. Around third. They're waving him in.
- 2:19:20He has to throw. He flies and he's in there.
- 2:19:23He's taken the plate. And the Yankees lead 2
- 2:19:27-0. A good slide by Mickey Mantle on a throw
- 2:19:32by Norfolk that was just a little high. And the
- 2:19:35Yankees lead 2 -1. Roy White coming through with
- 2:19:39a clutch single to left field. And Northrup charged
- 2:19:44that ball, knowing that Mantle has trouble rounding
- 2:19:47the bases. And Mickey did, but he put on the
- 2:19:50speed halfway between home and third. And a beautiful
- 2:19:53slide. You know what I like about this slide,
- 2:19:55Dale? He did not hook into the plate. He kept
- 2:19:57that left foot out straight and hit the bag just
- 2:20:00before Green made the tag. Shortest distance.
- 2:20:03Right. Holy cow. The Yankees lead 2 -1, and they're
- 2:20:13going to put Bill Robinson on and pitch to Whitaker.
- 2:20:19Bill Robinson getting an intentional pass. With
- 2:20:28Roy White, who went to second base on the throat
- 2:20:30of the plate. Bill White. Leading the major leagues
- 2:20:36in hitting before today's game gets his first
- 2:20:38hit. He's one for four. What a big RBI. I wish
- 2:20:49they wouldn't shoot those firecrackers off. Not
- 2:20:51just because it makes me jump, but it's dangerous.
- 2:20:54They're throwing down on the field. You remember
- 2:20:59Sam Nair and Phil? He was the coach for the Pirates.
- 2:21:01Uh -huh. He lost eyesight in one of his eyes
- 2:21:04in Brooklyn one time. Somebody dropped a firecracker
- 2:21:07out. No kidding. It exploded just about parallel
- 2:21:09with his head. It's not really right. Everybody
- 2:21:13likes a nice noise and a good time. There's a
- 2:21:16time and place for it. You're right. It's not
- 2:21:18right. Steve Whitaker has walked twice, bounced
- 2:21:22to second base. Brian is out to the mound. Talking
- 2:21:27with John Warden, who relieved Joe Farmer. You
- 2:21:34can hear the kids charging. By White at second.
- 2:21:41Robinson at first. Two out. A stretch by Ward.
- 2:21:49Pitch to Whitaker. Strike on the outside corner.
- 2:21:55Bill Robinson got the first Yankee hit in this
- 2:21:58game in the seventh inning. Knox got a hit. Haskell
- 2:22:03got a hit. Mantle got the big hit of the ballgame.
- 2:22:05And then White. Single to drive in Mickey. The
- 2:22:09Yankees lead 2 -1. The stretch by Warden. The
- 2:22:12pitch outside. One ball, one strike. He hangs
- 2:22:16in there pretty good, Phil. He does. You know,
- 2:22:18they've changed his stance, Dale. You remember
- 2:22:20they used to have a wide open stance. Right.
- 2:22:23And he was trying to pull that outside pitch
- 2:22:26too much. He has closed it a little bit. He's
- 2:22:28still a little open. But he's able to go better
- 2:22:31to left field with the pitch. First ball hits
- 2:22:34the left field. Coming on Northrop and makes
- 2:22:38the catch in short left field. He almost got
- 2:22:40one in there. But the Yankees come up with two
- 2:22:43runs on three base hits. No Tiger errors. Two
- 2:22:47men left. And the score now at the end of eighth
- 2:22:50ball inning, the Yankees two and the Tigers one.
- 2:22:56On the go. Go with Atlantic Imperial Gasoline
- 2:22:59and drive the Imperial Road. car will perform
- 2:23:30along the way. Atlantic Imperial Gasoline helps
- 2:23:33take care of that, wherever you go on the Imperial
- 2:23:36Road. You're always on the Imperial Road with
- 2:23:49Atlantic Imperial Gasoline. Well, the big left
- 2:24:11-hander, Steve Hamilton, is coming on, and this
- 2:24:17is just as it should be, Dale Long. Bill Mumblecat,
- 2:24:20who pitched such a beautiful game, has been taken
- 2:24:22off the hook and could be the winning pitcher.
- 2:24:25He could not be the losing pitcher now, right?
- 2:24:29He has pitched some balls. You know, when you
- 2:24:31get a little older, it's a shame, but the older
- 2:24:33you get, the smarter you get. Pretty soon the
- 2:24:36body can't call on the, you know, you call on
- 2:24:38the body to do something, it won't do it. That's
- 2:24:40right, if you're too old. But Mambo, who when
- 2:24:43he first broke in, was just a thrower in my estimation.
- 2:24:46Boy, he has changed. He has made a science of
- 2:24:49pitching now. The kind of guy you'd probably
- 2:24:52like to catch. That's right. So Steve Hamilton
- 2:24:58will be trying to nail this one down for Bill
- 2:25:01Mambo Kett and the Yankees. He'll be facing...
- 2:25:05Norm Cash, Jim Northrup, and Don Wert. Two left
- 2:25:08-hand hitters, and then a right -hand batter.
- 2:25:11Cash is 0 for 3. All right, here's Hamilton's
- 2:25:15first pitch to Cash. A curve, low ball line.
- 2:25:30Hamilton ready again. Curve over this time. Strike
- 2:25:35one, one -on -one. Here's the guy that's rough
- 2:25:37on you left -hand batters, Dale. He sure is.
- 2:25:40He's 6 '7". He leans over like the lenient tower
- 2:25:43of pizza. You heard that pizza now. I heard it.
- 2:25:46I heard it. I'm going to have one between games.
- 2:25:49Here's the one -one delivery. Another curve in
- 2:25:51the air. One ball, two strikes. Hamilton is making
- 2:25:58his third appearance of the year. He's only pitched
- 2:26:00three innings. He has not allowed a bay check.
- 2:26:05Walk one man. The one -two delivery. Just missed
- 2:26:10the outside corner on a little low. Two and two.
- 2:26:13That's what they call a slider on a half shell.
- 2:26:18Slider on a half shell. Well, that's why he's
- 2:26:22rough. He can throw the curve with the same motion
- 2:26:24and then the slider, and one doesn't break as
- 2:26:26much as the other. Here's his two -two pitch.
- 2:26:30Fly ball is caught by Neal. White coming in and
- 2:26:35makes a catch. He hits that ball right at the
- 2:26:37end of the pass, didn't he? He's looking for
- 2:26:42the chalk right over his head. Yes, that's right.
- 2:26:45And that was the beauty of Hamilton's side -on
- 2:26:47curveball. About another inch inside, and that
- 2:26:51ball could have been in the seat. All right,
- 2:26:53here's Northrup. He bounced it first, single
- 2:26:55right, and hit back to the box. Another left
- 2:26:58-hand batter. Dave Hamilton looking at the ball,
- 2:27:03checks it, doesn't like the way it feels, and
- 2:27:05throws it out. How can those pitchers have such
- 2:27:07sensitive fingers, Dale? Huh? How about the four
- 2:27:10words they came from? But anyway, those pitchers
- 2:27:15know. The horse side, you mean? They must have
- 2:27:17had sensitive something to get that horse side
- 2:27:19off. But anyway, these pitchers know, I'll tell
- 2:27:21you. The curve is over. Strike one called. I
- 2:27:25never thought about the poor horse. I never heard
- 2:27:28from the ASPCA. I'm always saying the poor pitcher.
- 2:27:32These fellas know the height of the fiends and
- 2:27:34everything else just by the touch of it. The
- 2:27:37one strike pitch. Turf foul. Back and out of
- 2:27:40play. Strike two. I mentioned that pitchers can
- 2:27:46make pretty good safe brackets. Yeah, they touch
- 2:27:49it. A lot of times it's the weight. Some balls
- 2:27:52weigh more than the others. They get scuffed
- 2:27:54up or something. They just don't like what they
- 2:27:58like, and that's it. All right. Here's the two
- 2:28:01-strike pitch. Sidearm curve popped up to the
- 2:28:04right side. Mickey Mantle is there in foul territory.
- 2:28:07Under it. Makes the catch. Two -way. The Tigers
- 2:28:12down to their last out, and it's John Ward, who
- 2:28:15is one for three, single in the fourth inning.
- 2:28:18He had struck out the second and popped the second
- 2:28:20in the sixth. Gives out to the mob. Has to look
- 2:28:25way up in the air at Big Steve Hamilton. Two
- 2:28:29men out. Two out. Nobody on. Yankees leading
- 2:28:432 -1. Hamilton turns around, looks at the defense.
- 2:28:49Word of right -hand batter. Whittaker and left
- 2:28:54Robinson instead of white and right here's the
- 2:28:58pitch to Orla rather to word is the strike on
- 2:29:00the inside corner and worth it like that ball
- 2:29:03hands on his hips shaking his head now he steps
- 2:29:08back into the batter's box the pitch is outside
- 2:29:17one -on -one Two out, nobody on, 2 -1 the Yankees
- 2:29:25lead, top of the ninth inning. Hamilton lines,
- 2:29:29this pitch, a bouncer in front of the plate,
- 2:29:31Hamilton up with it, throws to Mantle, the ball
