- 1:15Well, there were changes that came to the Casebook of Gregory Hood.
- 1:19Initially, as we said on the first broadcast, the Casebook of Gregory Hood
- 1:26was understood to be a summer replacement show for the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,
- 1:32and there were great hopes that Basil Rathbone would agree to another season. When
- 1:37it became apparent that wasn't going to happen, the Casebook of Gregory Hood was
- 1:41extended for a whole season. Gale Gordon stuck with the role for all the
- 1:47episodes we heard, plus six additional programs that are lost The Secret Society,
- 1:55The Mad Dancer, the Ghost Town Mortuary, Murder on the Archery Range on
- 2:00That's title unknown according to the Digital Deli, and the Missing Memoirs. So
- 2:05that ran through September sixteenth, which was his last day playing the role of
- 2:09Gregory Hood. Taking over for the full season and continuing on in the role
- 2:17through May would be Elliott Lewis. Elliott Lewis appeared in the Case of the
- 2:24Frightened Librarian, which aired on September twenty third of nineteen forty six. He'd
- 2:29done quite a bit of work with the Armed Forces Radio Services and played off
- 2:34the fact that he had a similar voice to Howard Duff, famous then as
- 2:38the voice of Sergeant X, the host of mystery playoffs, later to become
- 2:44the voice of Sam Spade. For Elliot Lewis, radio really was his love
- 2:49and passion. Even when the Golden Age of radio ended, Lewis was constantly
- 2:55evolved with radio revival efforts such as the Sears Radio Theater and the CBS mystery
- 3:02theater. His goal though, was not so much the acting work. That
- 3:07was kind of like this same thing with Jack Webb, except he didn't do
- 3:13as much acting in his later years. Acting was just his way to get
- 3:17his foot in the door so he could get involved in the industry and be
- 3:22able to do creative things such as right direct and produce, and truly in
- 3:28every single field that he was in in radio, he distinguished himself. He
- 3:31did some very innovative and interesting things when he was on suspense, for example,
- 3:38as the producer, was also involved in that classic Broadways my beat.
- 3:43At the same time was a very talented comic actor. He did some great
- 3:46dramatic work as well. And for those of you who have the premium side
- 3:52or app extras, we will go ahead and cover some of these programs and
- 3:59more detail. Some of the more famous ones include his work as Captain Philip
- 4:04Carney on the Voyage of the Scarlet Queen. He also played the role of
- 4:10Archie Goodwin on Mutual's series The Amazing Nero Wolf. I actually enjoyed the one
- 4:16remaining episode we have of this series. It's a shame we don't have more,
- 4:21because if we had more of his exemplars, we might conclude that he
- 4:25was perhaps the best radio voice of Archie Goodwin. Ever, unfortunately, as
- 4:31I said, only one exemplar out there. But now it's time for today's
- 4:36episode of the Case Book of Gregory Hood. And today's episode Gregory Hood Suspect
- 4:47at Free Wine brings you the Casebook of Gregory Hood. Tonight, the Petrie
- 5:01family, the family that took time to bring you good wine, invite you
- 5:05to listen to the story of Gregory Hood Suspect, another exciting adventure from the
- 5:11Case Book of Gregory Hood. And as for me, right now, I'd
- 5:15like to suggest the delicious new dessert peaches in Petrie California Muscatel wine. Just
- 5:21imagine juicy, golden sweet peaches flavored by the wine that goes with them perfectly.
- 5:27Petree muscatell sounds good, doesn't it, But you'll never know just how
- 5:31good till the first bite. Absolutely delicious and easy to prepare too. You
- 5:36just drain the juice from canned peaches, cook the syrup to slightly thickened,
- 5:42mixed with twice the amount of Petrie muscatell for over the peaches, and chill
- 5:46for two hours. Just be sure you use Petree muscatel because you know that
- 5:50Petrie muscatell is really special, A sweet, clear, golden wine with a
- 5:57full, rich flavor. It's really good. Try tomorrow night for dessert,
- 6:00peaches and Petrie muscatel. You can serve Petrie muscatel proudly because those five letters
- 6:06P, E, T R, I spell the proudest name in the long
- 6:12history of fine wine. Petrie. Well. Once again, it's Monday night
- 6:34in San Francisco, in time for our weekly date with Gregory Hood and his
- 6:39friend and attorney Sanderson Taylor. Tonight, Greg suggested we rendezvous at that Gurmes
- 6:44Paradise Emelios on Powell Street that's joining us. Shall we? Oh, Harry,
- 6:50Greg, how are you? Hi? Thank you? Harry. Were
- 6:53just got to a couple of Sherry's urry. Shall I make it three?
- 6:56Set? I got three? Mario. Well, I got about the night's
- 7:00story from the hint you gave us last week. It sounded like quite a
- 7:03yard. It was herh Greg had listened to me. He'd never been mixed
- 7:06up in this. If I listened to you, Sandy, I keep out
- 7:10of a lot of trouble, I'm sure, but I probably die of bore.
- 7:12Them. In any case, I always was a sucker of for beauty
- 7:15and distress. That's the way a good many stories of you start, it
- 7:19seems to me. For me, I'm just the poor man, Sir Walter,
- 7:23who is this particular dansel inders Jet? A sultry brunette by the name
- 7:28of Daphne Daphne blogs Now we'll skip the blogs and it strikes a discord.
- 7:34And Daphne was a girl I'd known quite well when I was staying down in
- 7:39Berlin game a couple of summers ago. I lost track of her for a
- 7:42while. I don't know. We ran into each other at the theater a
- 7:44few weeks ago. I was catching a performance of that swell play The Hasty
- 7:47Heart. Oh yeah. During intermission, I was getting some air when a
- 7:50voice behind me said, Hello, Greg, Daphne. I'm nice to see
- 7:57you again. Thanks Greg, I saw you inside, so I thought i'd
- 8:00catch you it into mission. Oh I'm glad you did. How about some
- 8:03supper after the performance tonight? Well, yes, I suppose, so said
- 8:07she was a violent enthusiasm. Oh what's wrong, Daphane, where's that champagne
- 8:13sparkle you used to have? Haven't you been getting the proper vitamins. Lady
- 8:16Greg, I'm in trouble, desperate trouble. I'm sorry, Daphane, what's
- 8:20wrong. I'm being blackmailed, blackmailed Greg, I'm frantic. Oh wait a
- 8:24minute, darling, take it easy. Uncle Greg's in charge. Now.
- 8:28Now let's step over here. Now, let's get the deal straight. Who's
- 8:35trying to blackmail you and what's his hold? Read this note? I found
- 8:37it pint to the seat of my car when I started out tonight. Plain
- 8:41manuscript paper, typed in capitals. Blackmail is usual, bold approach. Ah,
- 8:48If you don't wish your father to have proof of last week's convenient car
- 8:52breakdown and reno, bring one thousand dollars to the office of Jeffra Bronson on
- 8:58Montgomery. You don't tell a story with photostatic copy of foof will be sent
- 9:03to your fathers. Do you know this Jetra Bronson? Dafney, No,
- 9:09Greg, I've never heard of him. What the true dope on this RENO
- 9:11story? Oh, it's all perfectly immotate. I was up there with Martin
- 9:16Johnson last time. Johnson is married, isn't he. Of course his wife's
- 9:18my best friend. She's in New York and Hartman, and I thought it'd
- 9:22be fun to drive up to Reno for the day and desn gambling. He
- 9:26started back late. The car did break down, we couldn't get it fixed,
- 9:30and we had to spend the night in an order court. But he's
- 9:33all perfectly. He couldn't you explain that to your father? You remember Dad?
- 9:37He's victorian to the corps. Oh, yes, I seem to recall
- 9:41that. He asked me my intentions the first time I called on. Of
- 9:45course I didn't tell it. He'd never understand. In any case, I
- 9:48already lied to him, simply because I knew you wouldn't believe it too.
- 9:52I said I spent Friday night with a girlfriend, and he checked on that
- 9:56alibi. Of course the girl backed me up. Now, if you did
- 9:58tell him the truth, you think the worst, of course he would great.
- 10:03What am I going to do. I can't go to the police because
- 10:05they go straight to dub You can't raise a thousand dollars even if you could,
- 10:09Darling, I wouldn't let you hand it over. What can I do?
- 10:11Uncle Greg will take care of the first of all, let's go back
- 10:13and see the rest of the show. After that, we'll go out to
- 10:16suffer and I'll make a phone call. No, please, you can't say
- 10:18I don't worry Daphne. I'm gonna call Sandy Taylor. He's my pal and
- 10:22a very smart attorney. In Discretion is his middle name. I think this
- 10:26is a case where we don't make any move without taking legal advice. Well,
- 10:43Greg, you know as well as I do with the black man.
- 10:46Sell him stop at one page. Sure, but I have no intention of
- 10:48letting him make any payment he hasn't to do in any case, Sandy,
- 10:52have you ever heard of this guy Jeffra Bronson ever? I looked him up
- 10:56the phone book while I was talking to you, though, h he's got
- 10:58officers on my Gummer Street. All right, well, I think i'll call
- 11:00on him in the morning as Daphne's representative. All but just so dar gone
- 11:05ethical Sandy with a rodent like that's a clip on the joker, do a
- 11:09lot more good than throwing twenty books of law at him. On Saturday,
- 11:11I think I'll call on mister Jethro Bronson. Well, okay, Greg,
- 11:15but won't your step blackmailers usually know all the answer. I'll watch it,
- 11:18Sandy, but don't be surprised if you hear a squeal for help from Montgomery
- 11:22Street in the morning. I have a feeling I may land myself in a
- 11:24whole mess of trouble. I'm miss Carter, mister Bronson Stream, it's the
- 11:37hood. You have no appointment, No, Miss Carter. But I think
- 11:41if you tell him I'm a friend of Daphne Blogs, he'll see me jacky
- 11:45Blog. That's the moment that oh name of blogs works miracles, doesn't it.
- 11:56I don't give miss Carter. You're welcome. Yeah, come and sit
- 12:01down, mister, I'll walk around. Thanks. You have quite an office,
- 12:05mister Bronson. I'm so glad you're again, I do. I was
- 12:09admiring the chaste simplicity of your lettering on the outer door, Jethra Bronson.
- 12:15Nothing more is more necessary. You might have added abandoned hope, or you
- 12:20didn't enter here, or something equally appropriate. I don't think that I understand
- 12:24you, mister. I sure you're just a bewildered businessman who can't understand a
- 12:28new client. Hey, you have a swell view of the bay from here,
- 12:33as far as I can judge by peering through the dirty window. You're
- 12:37do for a cleaning, mister hooden and so as Daphne blogs, and presume
- 12:43your represent her, I do he brought the money. The businessman is confused
- 12:50no longer now, Bronson, I didn't bring the money. I thought first
- 12:54I'd like to see the evidence. You can see a photostatic copy of it.
- 13:00Yeah, ah, Bronson, you'd have to get on a step ladder
- 13:09to pass the time of day with a louse, wouldn't you very funny?
- 13:11Mister hood You want these order courts? Bronson, Yes, there's a profitable
- 13:16investment, I'll bet, especially when you can fix up the registrations this way.
- 13:22You knew that miss Blogg's father was a rich man, I suppose,
- 13:24mister Wood. I assure you I don't know all that's necessary about the family.
- 13:30Why do I get the money? I'll give you a check now,
- 13:33a check? Oh no, hood I'm no fool. I want cash,
- 13:37and I want unmarked bills of low denomination that I'd like the cash today.
- 13:43Okay, I'll go over to the bank. Good. I don't like the
- 13:50way you're fingering that paper knife of mine. Don't let its sharpness give you
- 13:54any stupid ideas. Have a revolver in this drawer you know, or if
- 13:58Bronson, if I did anything to a rap like you, I wouldn't use
- 14:03a knife, I'd use Why not keep away from me? Ah, that
- 14:11was a pleasure. How an I snap, mister Bronson, I'll be back
- 14:13in a flash with the cash. Ninety one hundred one thousand dollars. Hood,
- 14:28you got the numbers on these bills, Bonnie. Yeah, up to
- 14:33some new trickery on one of your cases. Fairly old trickery. I'm afraid.
- 14:37Thanks. Just a minute, I'll let you. Oh you locked up?
- 14:41Yeah, you got in just under the wire. Well, mister Hood,
- 14:46good luck with your trick what thanks? I have a hunch I may
- 14:48need it. I wish to see mister Bronson again, Mister Wood, I
- 15:01don't wish to, but I have to miss Carter. Senator Harrison is waiting
- 15:05to team too. Oh well, I'll take my turn. How are you,
- 15:07Senator? Oh, I haven't seen you since that last get together with
- 15:11the Bohemian brow. Bless my soul at young Gregory Hood? How are you,
- 15:15my boy? Fine? Thank you, sir. What is the great
- 15:18politician doing here? May I ask? Or maybe I shouldn't, h Well,
- 15:22I I have certain business with his fellow Bronson. And what may I
- 15:28ask you? Is it celebrated Gregory of Hood doing here certain business? Also,
- 15:31Senator, Oh, mister hoo, I didn't realize you would be Gregory
- 15:37Hood. I'm flattered that you've heard of me, Miss Carter, just the
- 15:39same. What's the chance of accelerating our interviews with mister Bronson? He is
- 15:41in, isn't he? Yes, he's talking on long distance. I'll keep
- 15:45your thank you, uh hard. Yeah. You've had dealings with this man
- 15:52Bronson before, No, Senator, this is my first unhappy experience. Well,
- 15:58he's an unmitigation, the scoundrel Hood. I've both thought that I what
- 16:03what's wrong with Carteret? The belief? What happened with the Bompton? He's
- 16:10the murdered believes. I'm take them the Devil's old time with her examination?
- 16:26Sergeant? Why don't they question us? I'm a busy man, sorry,
- 16:29Senator, but there's nothing I can do. Who's in charge of this case?
- 16:32Sergeant? THETT magruder, mister Hood magruder? It makes it tough for
- 16:36me. Where's Lieutenant Silvers? He's on vacation, mister Hood, and I
- 16:41am in trouble. Good thing I put in a called the Sandy Tailor.
- 16:45I may need a smart attorney. Okay, miss Carter, help me at
- 16:48the office. Lieutenant, I'm a very busy man. Got you take me
- 16:52first, Senator, you'll have to take your turn. Come on, Yeah,
- 16:59I find your old world charm and resistant. But I've waited a long
- 17:04time to catch you out on a limb. Now I've done it. Why
- 17:08do you hate me so much, magruder? Because you're an amateur dick who
- 17:11thinks he can make monkeys out of the police. I don't tell you how
- 17:15to run your business. Do you make you submit yourself up with hours?
- 17:18I don't consciously? It mixes itself up with me. You have a fact,
- 17:22Well you're mixed up in this one. But good. Let me see
- 17:26your right hand. It's a little dirty with that hmm knuckle skin. There's
- 17:33a bruise on the corpse's chin. It sucked him in your heart, Yes,
- 17:37Sherlock, I did. Why because I didn't like him? Why were
- 17:42you here? You know he was a blackmailer. I know he could never
- 17:45pin anything on him. You have something on you me and you were stooging
- 17:51for somebody else? Who was it? I ain't talking as they say,
- 17:53Magruder, you don't talk to the judge, hud because I'm arresting you on
- 17:59suspicion murder. Wow, very interesting. If you do that, mcgrudy,
- 18:06you'll end up with those tired archers of yours pounding a beat again. Skip
- 18:10the comedy hood. They won't get you off this spot. Oh okay,
- 18:14Sandy, I'm certainly glad to see you. I got here as fast as
- 18:15I could. Lieutenant Macgruder, meet my attorney, Sanderson Taylor. You don't
- 18:19have to introduce his hood. Mister Taylor and I know each other. What
- 18:25goes the Lieutenant's got a vacancy for me in death row, I think,
- 18:27mister Taylor, I am just about to arrest your friend on suspicion of murdering
- 18:32Jethra Bronson's on what evidence? He admits that he slugged the dead man.
- 18:37That doesn't prove murder, Lieutenant, But this paper knife does. Bronson was
- 18:41stabbed with it. I parted it for fingerprints. Prince A rond Hood Adam
- 18:47checked this fast. I've been looking forward to this day ever since that Fisherman's
- 18:53war business. Oh you really do have it in for me, don't you,
- 18:57Lieutenant, great, did you handle the Sure? I did, but
- 19:00I didn't stab the guy with it? Can I look at those prints on
- 19:03a knife? Lieutenant? Now? But don't handle it. Don't worry.
- 19:07I won't mess up the day. I will arrest of mister Taylor. If
- 19:11you do, Lieutenant, I'll have him out on a writ before you can
- 19:15spell habeas corpuses. I'll act you give a several hours start. Oh,
- 19:18very funny, mister whod You're not going to laugh your way out of this
- 19:22one. Hey, but bruder, even though you hate me, I'd like
- 19:25to save your badge and your arches. Come here? What's that? What
- 19:27is the game? They're planning to book me on the evidence of these prince,
- 19:30Lieutenant sure, and I'd like to point out a small inconsistency the faint
- 19:33old prince of Bronson's I suppose, yeah, these two heavy new ones of
- 19:36mine. Sure, fine, But there are only two prints the thumb print
- 19:40on the face of the handle, the four fingerprint on the back way you
- 19:44hold a knifehen you play with it as I did, or when you open
- 19:45the letters, but you couldn't possibly hold it that way, and only two
- 19:48fingers to stab a man. Well of course, Now, if you were
- 19:52stabbing a man, the prints of all the things would be on my handle.
- 19:55What do you say, Lieutenant, I guess you're right. Why the
- 20:00murderers prints on here? I'd say the answer to that would be a pair
- 20:03of gloves. And if you want to make an issue of my prince being
- 20:07on a knife, I'll be very happy. It's perfect evidence that I didn't
- 20:10kill Jethra Bronson. Okay, Hood, you've talked yourself out of this one
- 20:14for a minute or two, But before this case is over, I'm warning
- 20:18it. This is going to be the last chapter in the case book of
- 20:21Gregory Hood. Well, Gregory Hood takes a brief time out from tonight's adventure.
- 20:37I'd like to remind you again about that swell Petrie California muscatel and peaches.
- 20:42Petrie musketell goes mighty well with peaches in most any forms such as peach
- 20:47cake, peach cookies, and peach shortcake. Yes, the wonderful flavor of
- 20:52Petrie musketell really does something to desserts made with peaches. There are plenty of
- 20:56luscious canned peaches in the markets now. You can always get Petrie muscatel at
- 21:02your store, and in nearly every locality your dealer will be glad to give
- 21:06you a little recipe folder which gives four wonderful ways to serve peaches with Petrie
- 21:11Muscatel. Just be sure you buy Petri Muscatel, because all Petrie wines are
- 21:18good wines. For a moment, day, you had me worried. I
- 21:22thought my favorite amateur detective was going to be arrested for money. For a
- 21:26moment there, I had me worried. Lieutenant Macgruder is a tough ombre in
- 21:30gregoryhood is very far from his favorite detective, but he lets you go.
- 21:33Yes, Sandy, and I gravitated to the Prosperity Corner bar and quickly wanted
- 21:37to, oh, greg you're still under suspicion and we've got to cling very
- 21:42true, Sandy. And the more I brewed about the case, the more
- 21:45I inclined to one opinion. Huh, and that is well, Sandy.
- 21:48Magruda told us what miss Carter testified. Yes, she said that she talked
- 21:52to Bronce, and before he made the phone call, she came into the
- 21:55outer office for you and Senator Harrison were waiting, And the next time she
- 21:59went in Johnson was dead exactly, which would mean that, if her testimony
- 22:02is true, that she's the only person who could have committed the murder.
- 22:06Less, of course, an especially adroit seagull through his window and did these.
- 22:10If she did stab him, it wouldn't be hard to think of a
- 22:12motive. I've known people before who were for blackmailer's simply because their employer was
- 22:17blackmailing them too. Sure, but if she were the killer, surely she'd
- 22:19dream up an alibi. Maybe she saw you hamming the knife and thought your
- 22:25fingerprints would pin the rap on you. Or it might have been Senator Harrison
- 22:30for the obvious that he wasn't there purely for a social call. Yes,
- 22:33Sammly, I can see the possibility of motive. It's the how of this
- 22:36killing that worries me. The dead man's office was on the ninth floor.
- 22:40U huh. The only exit was through his door. Miss Carter saw him
- 22:42alive, walked outside whether the Senator and I were waiting. She goes back
- 22:47a few minutes later. He's dead, But the evidence would certainly point towards
- 22:52the secretary. See Greg, How's about the girl Daphne Blodes. She'd know
- 22:56as well as we do at Bronson's death. Put her there. McLear,
- 23:00that's a good murder motive in itself. Well true, Sanny, But I
- 23:03repeat how Daphne's a very cunning girl, but she can't float through a window
- 23:07nine stories high. No, it's true. It looks like a blank wall,
- 23:11Greg. But we've got to get around all over it, Sandy.
- 23:14I think the next step is obviously going to the secretary Ms Cotton. Right,
- 23:17I have her address. She lives on Russian Hill. But I'm worried.
- 23:19Huh what. I'm an ardent who'd done it plan and she's the obvious
- 23:22suspect by all the rules, it can't be her. Oh well, this
- 23:26is real life. Let's call on and see what happens. Mister good I'll
- 23:40be glad to help you anyway I can. I thought you would be,
- 23:41Miss Carter. Do you see my friend is still under suspicion by the police.
- 23:45I realized that, mister Taylor, and I must confess that if I
- 23:48hadn't known you would be, mister Hood, I would have suspected you myself.
- 23:52You wouldn't have been the only one in your suspicion. Ms Carter.
- 23:56Did you know that your employer's profession was black man, black man? No,
- 24:03I I certainly didn't, so I did know he was crooked black man.
- 24:10I wonder why Senator Harrison was there. Do you suppose mister Bronson had
- 24:14some hold over him and that the senator killed him? When did they have
- 24:17the opportunity? Oh, that's true. He never went past me, and
- 24:21there's no other door. He didn't even go in after you left the office.
- 24:23He and I watched each other like Hawkshaw's little police Or have you left
- 24:26the office in Carton? Yes, mister Taylor. After I called the police,
- 24:30I was sick. What's your own theory was, Carter? I didn't
- 24:37have one until I looked at this newspapers. Have you seen that? No?
- 24:40What times in Well? I spotted this on the back page. I
- 24:44may be imagining things, but it seems to me that it might connect.
- 24:48What's it saying? They're a very smart dramas, Carter. Listen to this.
- 24:52Sandy. A man was arrested in Montgomery Street late this afternoon. He
- 24:55claimed to have been doped, but the police are holding him on a vagrancy
- 24:57charge. What does that have to do with Bronson's money? Because it says
- 25:00here he was a professional window clean wind Well, I still don't I do.
- 25:03Bronson said that his windows were doe for a cleaning. You can see
- 25:06what happened. The murderer doped, the window cleaner, barred his equipment,
- 25:10worked his way around the Bronson's window, went in and stabbed him, and
- 25:11then made his getaway. It's the only way an outside person could have gotten
- 25:15it. Then let's go and talk to the window cleaner. Sure, Sandy,
- 25:18he's in jail, and that's one place that I'm sure we'll have no
- 25:19difficulty in gate crashing. That's the way it was, mister hood. I
- 25:33was standing in the corridor just filling my pipe and I smell something sweet.
- 25:38Next thing I know, I'm down in the basements to taking me down the
- 25:41service elevator. Sounds like twelve forms, Sandy, What time was this,
- 25:45hank Oh? I don't know, literal the afternoon, I guess. Don't
- 25:49you carry a watch? No, my profession, it's too risky, like
- 25:53full town of break the ajeepers out of it occupational. Have you any idea
- 25:57what time it was, hank Oh? But it was sometime in the afternoon
- 26:00because I could hear a radio in one of the offices and they was given
- 26:04the race results, and they're always at the same time in the afternoon.
- 26:07How much of it did you hear? When Housers was starting to give the
- 26:11results of the fourth race, just as he named the horse, it was
- 26:14Lady Best. I heard that, and next thing I knew, I was
- 26:18waking up downstairs track broadcast. Swell, Hank, you don't carry a watch.
- 26:22You've given me a dandy time check. Well, how do you mean
- 26:23all I have to do is call the radio station? Hank was knocked out?
- 26:26Is the fourth race was announced? As soon as I know the time
- 26:29of that, I think we'll have the answer to murder. Yeah. Yeah,
- 26:42When the fourth race was announced, it exactly twelve minutes past three.
- 26:45I'm much obliged to you at that time check, Sandy. I don't get
- 26:51it. I think I do. This whole case revolves around time the bank
- 26:53closes the three How long are you supposed took me to walk from there to
- 26:56Bronson's off? What is this more than a block? A couple of minutes?
- 26:59Just about maybe another minute in the elevator. I think this gives us
- 27:03the answer, Sandy. Let me make another phone call of Lieutenant McGruder and
- 27:04then we'll go back to Miss Carter's apartment on Russian Hill. I think that's
- 27:08where we're going to get the final payoff. Very nice of you to bring
- 27:21me a crossage ins to good. I think you deserved one. Miss Carter.
- 27:25You hadn't spotted that item about the window cleaner, this case might still
- 27:27be unsolved. Say the rest of the murderer. Browder's got a warrant out,
- 27:32Who is it? Sandy's an attorney. Let him lay it on the
- 27:34line for you. Well, this whole case revolves around the natural time.
- 27:38Very true, Sandy. Go on, the killer after drugging the window cleaner
- 27:42had to take his belt, crawl out and work his way around to Bronson's
- 27:47window. Now we know that the window cleaner wasn't drugged until twelve minutes past
- 27:51three. You established that fact then called the radio station exactly, Sandy.
- 27:55So if the window cleaner wasn't dugged to kalve minutes past three, the murder
- 27:57couldn't have been committed to three to fifteen. That's the logical deductions, Dandy,
- 28:03And it's also where the whole case blows up. You mean, Miss
- 28:07Carter. It's a problem in primary mathematics. I got to my bank at
- 28:11closing time. I was let out a few moments later. It took me
- 28:14two minutes to walk to the office building. Say another minute in the elevator.
- 28:17I was in the office with you, not more than a minute before
- 28:18you went in and found the corpse. I still don't understand me. Well,
- 28:23I go over it again, and you count on your fingers, Miss
- 28:26Carter. I left the bank at one minute past three, two minutes to
- 28:30walk to the office. A minute in the elevator and a minute in the
- 28:33outer office would add up to four at the latest five minutes past three,
- 28:37And at five minutes past three you went back in the office and he was
- 28:40dead. Yes, Greg, that's right. Huh. But on the other
- 28:42hand, the window cleaner who was to become our number one suspect wasn't drugged
- 28:45until more than five minutes afterward. Afterwards, God whom, miss Carter make
- 28:52a pretty picture of innocence. But I don't know who you think you're cool?
- 28:56What do you mean? The whole thing is obvious now? You killed
- 29:00Bronson. Then when the Senator spoke to me, you realized I was the
- 29:03mister hood as you put it, So you know it wasn't safe to frame
- 29:06me, so she dreamed up the idea drugging the window cleaner, and then
- 29:08drew the fact to your attention, your son. It was a neat idea,
- 29:12a very neat idea, if there hadn't been a cast iron time check
- 29:15on the whole deal. You're very quiet, Miss Carter. You said that
- 29:22Lieutenant Magruder had a warrant house. I was just to lead us into this
- 29:25conversation. Magouda wouldn't believe it what I say. But Lieutenant Silvers will be
- 29:29back soon. He'll believe me. You'll never talk to him and your friend
- 29:33either. Put that revolver away, Miss Cottage. Surely one murder of day
- 29:36is enough. One or three, It doesn't make much difference. Mister Taylor,
- 29:37why did you kill Bronson? He was to What hold did they have
- 29:41on you? My husband was overseas. I wasn't playing squam and Bronson found
- 29:47out, yes, and I only learned about it yesterday. So you stabbed
- 29:49him and then dreamed up the window cleaner gag. Yes, I do to
- 29:53be clean today, and I suddenly saw how I could establish a perfect cover.
- 29:56It was a perfect cover up, Miss Carter. If went for the
- 30:00fact that we can establish the time. Wait a minute, let me get
- 30:02this straight. You went at the Bronson's office after I left. You found
- 30:04him where I knocked him out, Koch stabbed him. Then after you called
- 30:07the police when you said you were sick, you left the office and drug
- 30:11the window cleaner took him down in the service elevator and hoped we'd fall for
- 30:14the idea that the murder had been committed by someone coming in through the window.
- 30:17That right, Yes, that's what i'd hoped at the pity you had
- 30:19to be so smart. I really don't want to shoot you, but I
- 30:22might. Thank you. I'll take care of that gun. I came as
- 30:40soon as you call me. Hood. I didn't trust you, but I
- 30:42figured I might as well. Listen, I came up on the fire escape
- 30:47nice to the young lady to leave her window open. Well, mcbrudy,
- 30:49I have your confession, and also I hope you realize that you've got a
- 30:53nasty, suspicious mind where I'm concerned. Okay, Hood, you were right
- 30:59this time. I don't mind getting at the rights of a case, even
- 31:03if an amateur has to help my One of these days you're going to start
- 31:07something. You can't finish. I hope not, Lieutenant, But it's possible.
- 31:11You're done right, it is, And when that happens, it's my
- 31:15last prayer every night that I'll be the cop on that face. What his
- 31:32story? What a story? But say, Greg, yes, Harry,
- 31:36I'm more convinced than ever that Magruder just doesn't like you. Why that couldn't
- 31:41be. Oh no, He's very solicitous about my health. Seems determined that
- 31:45someday I'm going to take a long rest at San Quentin. Magruder doesn't think
- 31:49so. No, I mean impossible, because then who tossed me those wonderful
- 31:53ques to get out about Patrie? Wye, well fellow, you tossed yourself
- 31:56that one. But carry on, Greg, especially today, because there's something
- 32:02new about Petrie. You know, the Petrie family has been making fine wines
- 32:07for generations. Now it's a heritage passed down from father to son, from
- 32:13father to son. And now this art in wine making has made possible the
- 32:19clowning achievement of the Petrie family. For at last, Angelo Petri himself has
- 32:23developed a wine so superb it stands out among the truly great wines of America.
- 32:30Yes, that great wine maker Angelo Petrie has done what every maker of
- 32:34fine wines hopes to do. He has created a wine to which he can
- 32:37proudly put his own signature. Angelo Petrie's Signature bottle Wine from California. What
- 32:45a wine. Words can't describe its wonderful fragrance and taste. I can only
- 32:51tell you that if you're hard to please about wine, this is the wine
- 32:54for you. Ask your dealer if he's received his allotment of Angelo Petrie.
- 33:00Angelo Petrie's signature bottle wine is available only in limited quantities, But if you
- 33:05find it, you'll enjoy the finest wine of a famous wine maker, Angelo
- 33:09Petrie. Well, gregg WIT's story out of your casebook? Are you planning
- 33:15to tell us next week? An adventure that took place under the Big Top
- 33:17of the San Francisco Circus a few months ago? Harry? The story tells
- 33:22of a very colorful girl who trained snow leopards, and of a sad clown
- 33:25whose first smile proved to be a smile of death the next Monday. Harry.

- 34:19you from our Hollywood studio. This is Hollie Bytel saying good night for the
- 34:28Petrie family. Well, the solid all of excitingness, welcome back. Well,
- 34:34this is a case where greg Reehood's reputation really actually saved the day because
- 34:43she panicked and ended up planning a clue that led to her unknowing. It's
- 34:49definitely very different from Gail Gordon. I do think one factor that may have
- 34:54contributed to the change, or that just at least something to is that Elliott
- 35:01Lewis is about eleven years younger than Gail Gordon, and probably this is one
- 35:08of the more subdued performances from Gregor from Elliott Lewis compared to his work just
- 35:17a few short months later on Voyage of the Scarlet Queen. Now we turn
- 35:22to listener comments and feedback, and we have this from Dana, I just
- 35:25discovered your podcast through the Window Phone app Store and have downloaded all the programs
- 35:30to my Lumina fifteen twenty. Well, thanks so much, glad to know
