Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Twins eke out series vs. A's with trade deadline one week away
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Just a reminder before we start. If you average two
- 0:05Speaker 1: wins in every three games throughout the course of the
- 0:08Speaker 1: season in Major League Baseball, that's a one hundred and
- 0:11Speaker 1: eight win team.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's very good.
- 0:13Speaker 1: So in that regard a very successful weekend. This weekend
- 0:17Speaker 1: for the Minnesota Twins. They take two out of three
- 0:19Speaker 1: against the Athletics. Dan and I are going to argue
- 0:21Speaker 1: about whether we should be happy about that or not,
- 0:23Speaker 1: but they got the job done.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It wasn't always pretty.
- 0:25Speaker 1: In fact, I think the first line of Dan's story
- 0:27Speaker 1: on the Athletic is don't worry about the aesthetics or
- 0:30Speaker 1: something like that. But the Twins got the job done.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Joe Ryan missed to start with arm fatigue. The trade
- 0:37Speaker 1: deadline is a week away as of today. We'll talk
- 0:39Speaker 1: about all that and more today on Twins Cities Territory
- 0:42Speaker 1: or Minnesota Twins Podcast here on the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I am Zach Pearce of the Athletic Joint as always
- 0:49Speaker 1: by Dan Hayes, the Athletics, Minnesota Twins beat writer, and
- 0:52Speaker 1: Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer and former Minnesota Twin Dane
- 1:01Speaker 1: I wasn't thrilled tell me, why I'm crazy.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Two out of three is exactly why. Guess what, baby,
- 1:08Speaker 3: they gained ground.
- 1:09Speaker 2: They ground. That's true.
- 1:12Speaker 3: There's why you're happy. They knocked three games off the schedule.
- 1:16Speaker 3: They didn't lose two of them. They didn't lose three
- 1:19Speaker 3: of them. They lost one of them. It was ugly.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Every bit of it was ugly. Scoring two runs in
- 1:25Speaker 3: the first eighteen innings against this athletics team, the Sacramento A's,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and then having a seven to nothing lead, and then
- 1:33Speaker 3: the game was sort of in question on Sunday. Oh man,
- 1:38Speaker 3: all of it makes you want to hold your nose
- 1:40Speaker 3: and cover up the stink. Doesn't matter. All that matters
- 1:43Speaker 3: is you get the victories. You move on. Look, that's
- 1:49Speaker 3: where the Twins are right now. They need to win.
- 1:51Speaker 3: They need to win. They need to win and convince
- 1:53Speaker 3: the front office that they are worthy. And look, I
- 1:57Speaker 3: will argue that they have done that by playing well
- 1:59Speaker 3: against good tas like they're not playing great against good teams,
- 2:03Speaker 3: but they played well enough against good teams. And if
- 2:05Speaker 3: you could add a bullpen arm or two to that
- 2:08Speaker 3: and give them a shot, if you could take away
- 2:11Speaker 3: that bullpen day, even though Kenry Rojas looked out standing
- 2:14Speaker 3: on Saturday night. But if you could take away that
- 2:17Speaker 3: bullpen day every fifth time and throw another starting pitcher
- 2:20Speaker 3: in there, this team looks suddenly a whole lot better
- 2:24Speaker 3: and has a better shot in those series against big teams.
- 2:28Speaker 3: But that's all it's about right now is wins, wins, wins.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Kansas City's coming up. Got to win two of three.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Sweeping would be awesome, but you got to win two
- 2:38Speaker 3: of three and get back to five hundred and keep
- 2:40Speaker 3: showing this front office, and that is really all the matters,
- 2:43Speaker 3: regardless how much I mean, look, it felt like there
- 2:46Speaker 3: was a malayis a general offensive malaise over this team
- 2:50Speaker 3: after being in Cleveland and facing that staff that just
- 2:54Speaker 3: knows them so well that they put them in funks.
- 2:56Speaker 3: And we saw a couple of those guys break out
- 2:58Speaker 3: of those funks, Like anybody look happier than brooks Lee
- 3:01Speaker 3: in the eighth inning when he broke his over for
- 3:03Speaker 3: sixteen was just a single. Cody Clemens had a monster day.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Ryan Kreibler had a monster day. Ryan Jeffers had a
- 3:11Speaker 3: monster day. Like so many key parts started getting some
- 3:15Speaker 3: hits in Sunday and breaking out of it. They had
- 3:17Speaker 3: thirteen hits. It's their most hits since July fifth. Byron
- 3:20Speaker 3: Buckson's still slumping right now, and that's noticeable when he goes,
- 3:23Speaker 3: they go Josh Bell hasn't had a big hit in
- 3:26Speaker 3: a little while. You can see it there too. But
- 3:28Speaker 3: it was just breakout of it, get wins, keep moving,
- 3:32Speaker 3: and I think that's what they did. And you could
- 3:34Speaker 3: say it was ugly. You can say it was ugly,
- 3:36Speaker 3: and it was just go for it exactly. That's here,
- 3:38Speaker 3: I because I agree with you on all of it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I mean, it was good, bad and ugly at times.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And you know, even people who never got higher than
- 3:49Speaker 1: junior varsity high school of baseball know that, like, sometimes
- 3:53Speaker 1: you play like crap against a bad team. Sometimes you
- 3:55Speaker 1: play out of your minds against a great team. And
- 3:59Speaker 1: that's kind of just depends where you want to look, right,
- 4:02Speaker 1: great efforts across the board from the starting pitchers and
- 4:05Speaker 1: Joe Ryan and TODJ. Bradley did not pitch in the series,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and they won with three encouraging starts, but also the bats,
- 4:11Speaker 1: especially Friday, a very very poor effort two hits the
- 4:16Speaker 1: whole game against Jacob Lopez, who came into the game
- 4:19Speaker 1: with a gaudy e er, but has looked pretty good
- 4:21Speaker 1: since returning from a triple a stent. But Tyler, like
- 4:25Speaker 1: we talked about it a lot, but a long season,
- 4:27Speaker 1: you're going to have games that don't where you don't
- 4:30Speaker 1: get the emphatic you know, twelve nothing win that your
- 4:32Speaker 1: fans might want to see right.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Now, and that's on Sunday. I think I guarantee every
- 4:38Speaker 4: guy in that clubhouse, you know, all the guys that
- 4:40Speaker 4: had great days had their day. But to make sure
- 4:42Speaker 4: and when that series was big, that was a losing
- 4:46Speaker 4: that one would have been bad for the morale across
- 4:48Speaker 4: the board, you know, from the suites up in the
- 4:51Speaker 4: top offices down to the players inside, like that would
- 4:54Speaker 4: have been a one to it's hard to recover from,
- 4:58Speaker 4: you know. But like we said, Cleveland kind of pitched
- 5:00Speaker 4: him into a little mini slump there, you know. I
- 5:03Speaker 4: think Byron, just to me, it almost looks like a
- 5:06Speaker 4: little rest of you know, him coming straight off the
- 5:09Speaker 4: deal into games, which is hard to do. You know,
- 5:12Speaker 4: It's it's not talked about a lot when guys do
- 5:14Speaker 4: that in the big leagues. They take those two weeks
- 5:16Speaker 4: off and they get their work in and things like that.
- 5:19Speaker 4: But just jumping straight back into games sometimes isn't the
- 5:21Speaker 4: easiest thing to do. And you know, the guys, guys
- 5:24Speaker 4: are getting right, probably needed this off day again. You know,
- 5:27Speaker 4: it's it's one of those as a team sometimes you
- 5:29Speaker 4: need a little reset sometimes. And you know they they
- 5:33Speaker 4: needed to win yesterday. It was a good way to
- 5:36Speaker 4: go into an off day, have a night off, you know,
- 5:38Speaker 4: enjoy the day to day. You know, I know it
- 5:40Speaker 4: was hotter than hell, but you know, get outside, go
- 5:43Speaker 4: do some other than baseball, maybe think about something else.
- 5:46Speaker 4: It's always good for the group. And and it's like
- 5:48Speaker 4: you mentioned, playing playing up and down to the teams
- 5:51Speaker 4: you're playing is where you get into trouble. And and
- 5:53Speaker 4: I think Friday probably woke them up a little bit,
- 5:56Speaker 4: you know, getting no hit for however many innings or
- 5:59Speaker 4: you know, or the total was it three total for
- 6:01Speaker 4: the game. You know, it's it's it's something that will
- 6:06Speaker 4: open your eyes up as a player. And you know,
- 6:08Speaker 4: I think Sunday showed those guys were ready to get
- 6:11Speaker 4: after somebody, and you know, they took advantage and hits
- 6:13Speaker 4: the balls hard, made some good defensive plays, and you know,
- 6:16Speaker 4: it's a it's when they needed that going into this
- 6:19Speaker 4: royal series. You know, it's it's one of those teams.
- 6:21Speaker 4: They know you too, so just like Cleveland, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 4: they they see each other so often, they've seen each
- 6:27Speaker 4: other so many times. They better show up ready to play,
- 6:30Speaker 4: because Kansas City is looking to play. Spoiler, I guess
- 6:33Speaker 4: at this point, you know they there's young.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Guys Ran.
- 6:36Speaker 4: And the Dobber, the Dobber. I they were talking about
- 6:40Speaker 4: that on Area yesterday. That'll be pretty cool for him.
- 6:43Speaker 4: You know, I played with Randy for a lot of
- 6:44Speaker 4: a lot of games and such a great dude. I'm
- 6:47Speaker 4: glad he's back, and you know, hopefully he loses one. Nothing.
- 6:50Speaker 4: That's what I say about guys like that. You know,
- 6:51Speaker 4: I hope he gives up one and they lose, they
- 6:53Speaker 4: both throw shut outs. You know, it'll it'll be fine.
- 6:56Speaker 4: So you know, but this series, like we keep talking about,
- 6:59Speaker 4: they got it, they got get after it. Game one tomorrow.
- 7:02Speaker 4: They gotta come out and make a statement because if
- 7:04Speaker 4: they don't, it sends messages all the way up to
- 7:06Speaker 4: that top office.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Or even better, maybe seven shutout innings for Domnick and
- 7:12Speaker 1: then they take him out in the Twins score like
- 7:14Speaker 1: seven in the eighth and yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 4: He can have a zero.
- 7:17Speaker 1: He doesn't Yeah, he doesn't need it. We don't need
- 7:20Speaker 1: him to.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Take when we preview. We'll preview that series a little
- 7:23Speaker 3: bit later. And I'm gonna I'm gonna get def to
- 7:25Speaker 3: share the one of the greatest Randy Dobnack stories, just
- 7:29Speaker 3: because that guy had so many. But with this series,
- 7:33Speaker 3: look the soft tossing lefty Jacob Lopez that just that's
- 7:37Speaker 3: been there, the like this is a great, very good offense.
- 7:41Speaker 3: They've maybe like ops plus fives. They're not a great offense,
- 7:44Speaker 3: but they're the top run scoring offense for a reason.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And they just can't hit lefty pitchers like that. They
- 7:50Speaker 3: just have so much trouble with it, and it's been
- 7:53Speaker 3: a constant source. It basically took away a very good
- 7:57Speaker 3: start by Zebbi Matthews, who gave up two runs. I
- 7:59Speaker 3: can't he was hit. Listen to the fifth inning, I
- 8:01Speaker 3: believe or the fourth an he looked really good. And
- 8:04Speaker 3: that's a good offense on that side. That that just
- 8:08Speaker 3: has kind of I mean, even even as rough of
- 8:11Speaker 3: a month as they were having their averaging four runs
- 8:13Speaker 3: a game coming into this series, so and they've just
- 8:16Speaker 3: got Nick Kurtz back like that's he's just we saw
- 8:20Speaker 3: it right. He hit that monster home run off Cole
- 8:23Speaker 3: Sand's that's a good offense and Debbie that was a
- 8:25Speaker 3: good start for him. But man, that was a very
- 8:27Speaker 3: disappointing game on Friday. I mean, just to come in
- 8:32Speaker 3: with those kind of like after a huge win like
- 8:34Speaker 3: that in Cleveland, after two huge wins like that in
- 8:37Speaker 3: Cleveland and gets shut out for the third time all
- 8:39Speaker 3: year certainly puts a damper on any kind of good
- 8:43Speaker 3: feelings you have, and then to eke out some wins
- 8:45Speaker 3: after that is Look, I'm not saying you're not justified
- 8:49Speaker 3: in tempering your enthusiasm for its deck like it really
- 8:53Speaker 3: like there. It was painful at times, but there were
- 8:59Speaker 3: just so many goods signs that we saw throughout that
- 9:01Speaker 3: I think you look at those over it again. Alan
- 9:04Speaker 3: Roaden with the big hit. All he does is get
- 9:07Speaker 3: big hits because his overall number one that press four
- 9:11Speaker 3: or five just yeah and backtbreakers he's yeah, and Rojas
- 9:17Speaker 3: looked amazing, And it's so funny. I'm getting called in
- 9:19Speaker 3: the Varlin Trade apologist online because I can see that
- 9:23Speaker 3: twenty three year old Kendrey Rojas, who, by the way,
- 9:26Speaker 3: because the Twins didn't use him this whole year, is
- 9:29Speaker 3: going to have six full seasons of team control after this.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Like this is just his his kind of getting his
- 9:35Speaker 3: feet wet. Who knows, maybe the CBA changes free agency,
- 9:39Speaker 3: but Kendrey Rojas is just such a like for being
- 9:43Speaker 3: a work in progress. I like what I see so far.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I mean, the strikeouts are through the roof goose. I
- 9:48Speaker 3: think it's twenty nine and twenty five and two thirds.
- 9:51Speaker 3: The walks are unsightly, but one home run allowed in
- 9:53Speaker 3: twenty five and two thirds and just does not Nobody
- 9:57Speaker 3: looks comfortable against that guy when they step in. Connor
- 10:00Speaker 3: Prelift looked really good, Like there were so many good
- 10:03Speaker 3: things that happened in this series. Like you said, the
- 10:06Speaker 3: starting pitching was very good for the Twins. Throat series,
- 10:09Speaker 3: what they allow to starting pitching allowed three earned runs
- 10:12Speaker 3: in about let's see sixteen innings I think combined. And
- 10:16Speaker 3: that's and the two of you guys were on pitch counts.
- 10:18Speaker 3: So I mean, you're you're feeling pretty good about where
- 10:21Speaker 3: you are off that series in a number of ways.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Cole Sand's that was That was a rough debut, you know,
- 10:29Speaker 3: five runs and one third of an inning. But you know,
- 10:32Speaker 3: aside from that, there's a lot of good things that happened.
- 10:35Speaker 1: All right, Yes, I'll get over it. We'll talk more
- 10:38Speaker 1: about the good things and in just a minute. If

- 12:55Speaker 2: Thank you, See Geek.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Dan mentioned some of the good stuff from the weekend,
- 13:02Speaker 1: which I will begrudgingly accept and allowed this conversation to
- 13:05Speaker 1: move forward towards. But that started with Saturday. It was
- 13:09Speaker 1: an interesting situation at the beginning. Derek Shelton had to
- 13:13Speaker 1: come out and tell AI's manager Mark Coott say that
- 13:16Speaker 1: there was a last minute pitching change. It was supposed
- 13:17Speaker 1: to be Mike Parades, but he went to the il
- 13:20Speaker 1: with I forget oblique. Kendriy Rojas made the spots start
- 13:26Speaker 1: instead and looked again very promising Dan.
- 13:30Speaker 3: He does like, I just really like what you see there,
- 13:34Speaker 3: because looks he if he can throw strikes if he
- 13:38Speaker 3: can just be on the plate, nobody's hitting his stuff.
- 13:41Speaker 3: One home run in twenty five and two thirds he
- 13:43Speaker 3: just is on base or his average against upon it's
- 13:46Speaker 3: average against is not very high, like his hits are
- 13:50Speaker 3: under twenty five. He just has really great stuff. It
- 13:55Speaker 3: really the key is being on the plate, and I
- 13:58Speaker 3: think the more he gets used to that, the easier
- 14:01Speaker 3: it becomes. It's really weird. It's so funny because he
- 14:04Speaker 3: and Connor Prilip debut in the same game in April,
- 14:06Speaker 3: and Connor prelib seems unfazed by everything, right, and I
- 14:11Speaker 3: don't think that Rojas is phased by stuff, but I
- 14:14Speaker 3: think it's still just he's definitely adapting to new situations.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I thought that was outstanding for him to be called
- 14:23Speaker 3: upon last minute because it was my greatest He was
- 14:26Speaker 3: warming up on TV. You know, that's when when they're
- 14:28Speaker 3: showing the starting picture warming up on TV, and to
- 14:31Speaker 3: get the last minute call where you are thrown into
- 14:34Speaker 3: it and you got to start. We saw Samean Woods
- 14:38Speaker 3: Richardson struggle in those same exact situation earlier this year
- 14:41Speaker 3: when Rojas got hurt in May. Rojas handled this so well,
- 14:47Speaker 3: and the one thing that sticks out. And I know
- 14:49Speaker 3: I've mentioned it before, but asking Johann Santana about him
- 14:52Speaker 3: in spring training and talking to him because they'd had
- 14:55Speaker 3: some in depth conversations, and he said, this guy has
- 14:58Speaker 3: this stuff, but he's trying to become a pitcher already
- 15:01Speaker 3: and he's not just trying to be a thrower, and
- 15:03Speaker 3: you can tell he's trying to learn. And I think
- 15:05Speaker 3: that's very advanced for a twenty three year old guy
- 15:08Speaker 3: who very much looks the part in the clubhouse, looks
- 15:11Speaker 3: like he belongs. He just looks like a wide eyed kid,
- 15:14Speaker 3: but I mean like he's got some maturity to him,
- 15:17Speaker 3: and I think that helps him in these situations. If
- 15:19Speaker 3: he can be on the plate, that's a real force
- 15:21Speaker 3: for them. I mean, like just stuff wise, you can
- 15:25Speaker 3: kind of yeah, that's I saw.
- 15:27Speaker 4: It got me fired up about him. But there's a
- 15:30Speaker 4: X account that you know, does pitch pitch profilery is
- 15:34Speaker 4: But he's thrown out Turk Scooble junior comps. So anytime
- 15:39Speaker 4: that's something you're hearing from a guy, especially thrown from
- 15:42Speaker 4: that side of the plate, that's somebody you want to
- 15:44Speaker 4: take care of and manage correctly and keep bigly ready,
- 15:48Speaker 4: and he seems to be settling in, you know, to
- 15:52Speaker 4: your point, Danny, he it's you know, guys come up,
- 15:55Speaker 4: and especially guys with velo and moving parts like sometimes
- 15:58Speaker 4: it's you just got to yourself in to figure out
- 16:01Speaker 4: where that big league strike zone is. You know, big
- 16:03Speaker 4: league hitters don't swing the same as guys in the
- 16:05Speaker 4: miners things like that. You know, like you mentioned pre Lip,
- 16:08Speaker 4: you know, there's some pretty impressive arms that are kind
- 16:13Speaker 4: of settling in for rotation spots for the Twins right
- 16:16Speaker 4: now that you know, looking forward even next year down
- 16:19Speaker 4: the road. For you know, you're in a short playoff
- 16:21Speaker 4: series and you can roll out two lefties touching ninety nine,
- 16:25Speaker 4: like that's that's some pretty good stuff to have on
- 16:28Speaker 4: top of Joe Ryan and TODs Bradley and the mix
- 16:31Speaker 4: of whoever else comes in. Like you, you're starting to
- 16:34Speaker 4: settle into a spot where you've got some really dominant
- 16:37Speaker 4: choices coming out of the bullpen or shorter starts, whatever
- 16:41Speaker 4: you may need them to do. It's it's been fun
- 16:44Speaker 4: to watch both of those guys, but Rojas to settle in,
- 16:48Speaker 4: and you know he's a little erradic at times, but
- 16:51Speaker 4: the stuff is it's unhittable at times. So that's you know,
- 16:54Speaker 4: when you've got a few toys like that to have
- 16:57Speaker 4: to plug into a lineup, it makes it the pretty
- 17:01Speaker 4: pretty fun to watch, and I'm sure Shelty is starting
- 17:04Speaker 4: to really enjoy writing their names on some lineup cards.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Opponents are hitting one ninety five against him and slugging
- 17:11Speaker 3: two seventy six on base is three forty six because
- 17:14Speaker 3: the white the walks are unsightly. But when he throws
- 17:16Speaker 3: it in that zone, nobody's touching it there. It's like
- 17:20Speaker 3: trying to hit with a boat or up there like
- 17:22Speaker 3: you got like you're not a full bat and it's
- 17:26Speaker 3: like the nineth hitter in the lineup.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Wouldn't that be easier though wider.
- 17:30Speaker 4: If it turns sideway?
- 17:32Speaker 5: Yeah, so I don't call it an axe handle, No,
- 17:40Speaker 5: I've seen I've seen Francisco Lariano's name evoked with him
- 17:44Speaker 5: a few times, which will certainly get Twins fans.
- 17:47Speaker 2: We're out up so so yeah.
- 17:49Speaker 3: But look, the thing that these guys have to overcome
- 17:52Speaker 3: that he's not Louis Varlin and they're all mad about that.
- 17:56Speaker 3: And the funny part is not one of us like right,
- 17:58Speaker 3: he's not one of us. So Twins have had plenty
- 18:01Speaker 3: of one of us over the years. Okay, it's great.
- 18:04Speaker 3: I love it when they come when guys, there.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Are a lot of us in those all the minor
- 18:09Speaker 4: league there are.
- 18:11Speaker 3: And Louis Varlin, like it took a while for him
- 18:15Speaker 3: to finally get to a good spot with the Twins.
- 18:18Speaker 3: He had a ton of ups and downs early on,
- 18:21Speaker 3: and he's taken another step with the Jase And it's
- 18:23Speaker 3: awesome to see because Louie is a great dude. Like
- 18:26Speaker 3: you want dudes to have success. He wasn't finding that
- 18:29Speaker 3: success with the Twins. I mean, they gave him so
- 18:31Speaker 3: many chances as a starter and it just didn't work out.
- 18:33Speaker 3: He can't like he'd throw ninety five over the middle
- 18:36Speaker 3: and give up a home run, and you give up
- 18:37Speaker 3: a couple of home runs a game, and like his
- 18:39Speaker 3: home run totals decreased significantly. He's the Jays worked on
- 18:43Speaker 3: his pitch mix and cut down and like as a reliever,
- 18:46Speaker 3: he's just kick ass now And you could see the
- 18:48Speaker 3: parts there, but it wasn't happening with the Twins. He's
- 18:52Speaker 3: twenty eight, Rojas is twenty three, and so Rojas is gonna,
- 18:56Speaker 3: unfortunately have to live up to these just un real
- 19:00Speaker 3: expectations because Varland's got this one oader la year and
- 19:03Speaker 3: it's it's amazing. He's having an amazing season. But it
- 19:06Speaker 3: took Varlan. Varland has been in the league since twenty
- 19:09Speaker 3: twenty two, so this isn't like this happened overnight for
- 19:12Speaker 3: Louis Varland, and it took go into a new team
- 19:15Speaker 3: for it to happen to Farland. You know, Rojas like
- 19:19Speaker 3: where he's starting right now is extremely promising. And it's
- 19:23Speaker 3: unfortunate for Kendrick Rojas that he was included in that
- 19:26Speaker 3: trade because if he'd come over in any other trade,
- 19:28Speaker 3: fans would be super hyped, but they're so pissed about Varlin.
- 19:31Speaker 3: And by the way, the Jays with Louis Arland are
- 19:34Speaker 3: forty eight and fifty seven. They're in last place. The
- 19:37Speaker 3: Twins won the season series against Louis Arland's team, they're
- 19:41Speaker 3: in better spot. Like I get that having Louis Varland
- 19:44Speaker 3: would probably help the Twins out at least two to
- 19:46Speaker 3: three games, but also the Twins have figured out the
- 19:50Speaker 3: ninth and the eighth innings between Andrew Morris and Yandros Gomez.
- 19:53Speaker 3: So it's not like the Twins are in this spot
- 19:54Speaker 3: where they don't have a guy closing out games. They
- 19:57Speaker 3: have They've figured out those last two spots need two
- 20:00Speaker 3: more relievers, there's no question. And having Varlin there all
- 20:04Speaker 3: year would have made a huge difference. But I mean,
- 20:07Speaker 3: there are you can have both teams come out of
- 20:10Speaker 3: a trade doing well, like it is okay to have
- 20:13Speaker 3: a trade that benefits both sides, and this looks like
- 20:16Speaker 3: it has the potential to do that. You know, Rojas,
- 20:19Speaker 3: there's so much we don't know about where he's gonna
- 20:21Speaker 3: be over the next six years.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Well, and the other piece of that trade was Alan Roden,
- 20:26Speaker 1: who delivered the game winning hit in that same exact game.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Is what third or fourth huge hit for this team
- 20:33Speaker 1: since getting called up. Andrew Morris also nearly threw the
- 20:38Speaker 1: game away literally in the eighth inning when he turned
- 20:40Speaker 1: to second base to try to force a runner and
- 20:42Speaker 1: through it in the center field, but then got out
- 20:44Speaker 1: of a second second.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Nobody too much, Yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 3: But tried to play and through to third and let
- 20:52Speaker 3: the time run get the second. Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I was getting around a praising Andrew Morris for you know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I know you are standing in there and getting out
- 21:01Speaker 1: of that because like, we gotta be.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Fair on this show. That's what I'm just saying.
- 21:06Speaker 1: We know, but you know, you talk about moments that
- 21:10Speaker 1: could turn a season, like if the Twins blow that
- 21:12Speaker 1: game on a play like that, yeah, and and lose
- 21:16Speaker 1: the series? Yeah right, exactly. Also worse shouting out from Saturday.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Ryan Kreidler thrilled the crowd on Ryan Day, not the
- 21:28Speaker 1: Ohio State coach. It was a day for Ryan's people
- 21:30Speaker 1: named Ryan. I did not know this was the thing.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I admit I didn't either, But the Twins theoretically could
- 21:37Speaker 1: have trotted out a three Ryan lineup with Joe Jeffers
- 21:40Speaker 1: and Kridler. But obviously it wasn't Ryan's turn to pitch,
- 21:43Speaker 1: and he had arm fatigue, and Jeffers did what did
- 21:45Speaker 1: he just get a rest day on Saturday because he.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Was back ud like?
- 21:53Speaker 4: And then the day game and then yeah, but uh,
- 21:56Speaker 4: Kreyler with with a double, a nice defensive play, stolen base,
- 22:00Speaker 4: and every time he did anything the crowd was very happy.
- 22:04Speaker 3: So I think there were nine hundred and seventy Ryan's
- 22:08Speaker 3: nine hundred seventy dudes, dam Ryan.
- 22:10Speaker 1: So I mean, really they track that we have to
- 22:12Speaker 1: like declare at the gate when you get there.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I guess like the group lets them. Interesting.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's I believe.
- 22:23Speaker 3: I believe it is very strict, Like the club is
- 22:26Speaker 3: very strict. I think I don't know.
- 22:28Speaker 2: That they probably true.
- 22:30Speaker 3: No, No, it's like they know Brian curious. Yeah, some
- 22:37Speaker 3: guy just holds his idea up and covers.
- 22:39Speaker 2: The b This is the Homers crowd. We're allowed to
- 22:42Speaker 2: have one.
- 22:44Speaker 3: But like, uh, it's like I only learned about it
- 22:48Speaker 3: from social media. Apparently they were the Rockies game last
- 22:50Speaker 3: year and I loved it. So Ryan Kreidler gets on
- 22:53Speaker 3: with that, that ground rule double steals third and the
- 22:56Speaker 3: chance just going on, bring Ryan home, Bring Ryan home.
- 22:59Speaker 3: It was it was pretty cool. But you're right, Ryan
- 23:02Speaker 3: Jeffers missed opportunity there for the twins. But you know
- 23:06Speaker 3: the hamate bone workload management. You gotta you gotta be
- 23:11Speaker 3: adhere to it strictly. And but yeah, Ryan Krayler, great weekend.
- 23:16Speaker 3: I mean, had the stone base on on Saturday, had
- 23:20Speaker 3: the double on Saturday, had the great defensive play late
- 23:23Speaker 3: in the game on Saturday, but then two doubles in
- 23:26Speaker 3: a triple on Sunday, two more stone bases. One of
- 23:29Speaker 3: those stone bases where the catcher overthrows man. Jonaheim talked
- 23:34Speaker 3: about a rough you mentioned earlier. He did Shay Langliers
- 23:40Speaker 3: getting hurt and tearing his meniscus and it looks like
- 23:44Speaker 3: he's out for the season. Him steps in and Danny
- 23:47Speaker 3: Gladden on the radio yesterday is talking about how Heim
- 23:49Speaker 3: has just not thrown a runner out all season repeatedly,
- 23:53Speaker 3: and the Twins ran like they knew he hadn't thrown.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Kreyler still third base three times in that series, I believe,
- 24:00Speaker 3: or maybe there was a second base in there, but
- 24:03Speaker 3: but yeah, he stole third base on Saturday. He stole
- 24:05Speaker 3: it yesterday. Like that was a very good series for
- 24:09Speaker 3: those Ryan fans that were out there because it's, uh,
- 24:15Speaker 3: you know, Ryan Kradler has been really good since he
- 24:17Speaker 3: stepped in at short stop. They just, I mean, does
- 24:19Speaker 3: it not seem defensively like they're so much more in
- 24:23Speaker 3: lockstep when they have him up the middle making plays.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a good that's he's been great.
- 24:29Speaker 4: We've always said, like I've said it forever, you know,
- 24:32Speaker 4: we said it all coming up or even in the
- 24:33Speaker 4: big leagues like, I don't care what my shortstop hits,
- 24:37Speaker 4: what my center fielder hits. If they are good at defense,
- 24:40Speaker 4: put them in the lineup every day because those guys
- 24:43Speaker 4: are so important. They cover so much ground, and they
- 24:46Speaker 4: they handle the baseball so many times, and it matters
- 24:49Speaker 4: every time they touched the ball, you know, and them
- 24:51Speaker 4: and then the catchers. Ultimately, like those three, you can
- 24:55Speaker 4: hit a buck buck twenty and stay there.
- 24:58Speaker 6: You know.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Martin Maldonado is one of those. Or it's just like
- 25:01Speaker 4: the Astros were willing to just let him not hit
- 25:04Speaker 4: to catch games, you know, And that's that just shows
- 25:07Speaker 4: you how valuable the defense is.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Yadi Molina made a career of not hitting.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Of course, the Patris.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I know he puts the numbers on.
- 25:21Speaker 1: We will take a quick break. We'll come back talk
- 25:23Speaker 1: Joe Ryan and the trade deadline and tee up the

- 27:04Speaker 1: Joe Ryan missed Sunday's start with arm fatigue. I feel you,
- 27:09Speaker 1: Joe on that one. I have no excuse for it,
- 27:11Speaker 1: but other than not being athletic or training for anything
- 27:15Speaker 1: at all, anyway, it's interesting timing. Obviously, the trade deadline
- 27:19Speaker 1: one week away from today. Certainly one bad start like
- 27:25Speaker 1: he had last time out and arm fatigue may not
- 27:28Speaker 1: be a huge red alert for some teams, But if
- 27:32Speaker 1: you're trading for Joe Ryan, it's because you want him
- 27:34Speaker 1: to help you right now, and so I'm sure any
- 27:37Speaker 1: team thinking about it is going hmmm at the moment.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Meaning his start this week against Kansas City could loom
- 27:42Speaker 1: very large in that he's not the only twin who
- 27:45Speaker 1: will be in talks over the next week, but we'll
- 27:47Speaker 1: start with him. Obviously missed the game with arm fatigue, Dan,
- 27:50Speaker 1: but coming back on Wednesday, and where do things stand
- 27:54Speaker 1: with Joe Ryan right now?
- 27:56Speaker 3: Yeah, full disclaimer, I was not in Minnesota over the weekend.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Took this series off. Be back on Tuesday, but talking
- 28:02Speaker 3: to the other reporters and Bobby Nightingale tweeted it out
- 28:06Speaker 3: or Ski did it out on Blue Sky. Joe Ryan
- 28:09Speaker 3: has zero concern about going on the aisle. That's what
- 28:12Speaker 3: he said to Bobby into one of the other reporters.
- 28:16Speaker 3: He threw a bullpen on Saturday. He said it was
- 28:18Speaker 3: a step in the right direction gett him back on track.
- 28:21Speaker 3: And look, it's interesting because that bullpen I think originally
- 28:25Speaker 3: was supposed to happen on Friday, with him maybe going Sunday,
- 28:29Speaker 3: and he was not able to throw the bullpen in
- 28:32Speaker 3: between the All Star appearance and his start in Cleveland.
- 28:37Speaker 3: So the idea that he had not been able to
- 28:40Speaker 3: do his sidework is certainly speaks to the idea that
- 28:43Speaker 3: the twins are like very concerned enough to at least
- 28:48Speaker 3: slow him down and give him a little extra time,
- 28:50Speaker 3: and that's why we're seeing them do this. But Ryan
- 28:53Speaker 3: felt like it went well and was like making progress
- 28:57Speaker 3: in the bullpen. I mean, the stuff that he gets
- 29:00Speaker 3: done in his mid starts. You can tell how important
- 29:03Speaker 3: it is to him. It's not just to get out
- 29:04Speaker 3: there and make sure the arm feels good. He works
- 29:07Speaker 3: on a lot of stuff and gets his next game
- 29:09Speaker 3: plan ready. And this is a guy that hits so
- 29:11Speaker 3: many quadrants with pitches. He needs to feel like he's
- 29:13Speaker 3: going good. And so I guess Derek Shelton said that
- 29:17Speaker 3: they got together Pete McKie, Nick Poparista, their their athletic trainer,
- 29:22Speaker 3: Joe and decided an extra day would be good, and
- 29:24Speaker 3: that meant he didn't start Sunday, and so he'll go
- 29:28Speaker 3: from Monday last week when some of his velocites dipped
- 29:31Speaker 3: those last two outings or the last two innings, going
- 29:35Speaker 3: all the way till next till Wednesday. So that's a big, long,
- 29:39Speaker 3: healthy break for him. But you know the fact that
- 29:43Speaker 3: Joe said zero concern. I just talking to the guys.
- 29:46Speaker 3: It didn't sound like this is worrisome. Guys go through
- 29:51Speaker 3: this Connor prelip. We've seen him get days extra days
- 29:54Speaker 3: to avoid this kind of stuff. Guys get arm fatigue
- 29:58Speaker 3: all the time. So it doesn't shock me. But it's
- 30:02Speaker 3: certainly not great time. And if you were looking to
- 30:04Speaker 3: trade Joe Ryan. I particularly don't think the Twins are
- 30:07Speaker 3: looking to trade Joe Ryan, but having an arm concern
- 30:11Speaker 3: pop up, you know, it's like everything's riding on Wednesday
- 30:14Speaker 3: if they were trying to trade him.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it with six games to go until the deadline,
- 30:19Speaker 1: you know, I don't know that the narrative on the
- 30:22Speaker 1: team is going to swing very much at this point.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Barring a zero to six just disastrous week here could happen.
- 30:29Speaker 1: But I think we've all felt like trading Joe Ryan
- 30:33Speaker 1: feels like a very nuclear option for a team that
- 30:35Speaker 1: suddenly looks competitive tilely, right.
- 30:39Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's pushing the big red button when you
- 30:41Speaker 4: do that one for everyone involved. But you know, I
- 30:45Speaker 4: talked about this earlier in the year. I can't remember
- 30:48Speaker 4: who it was, but in the world of baseball now,
- 30:51Speaker 4: you know, in Joe's defense, you know, it's a very
- 30:56Speaker 4: recovery driven you know, daily like very guys are very
- 31:00Speaker 4: cerebral about how their body feels and very in tune
- 31:03Speaker 4: with their their routines and how they feel between the outings,
- 31:07Speaker 4: even you know, the day after start, before start, you know,
- 31:11Speaker 4: and who knows that, you know, he pitch in the
- 31:12Speaker 4: All Star Game which you know that's probably probably had
- 31:15Speaker 4: some extra adrenaline going, you know, let it rip. You know,
- 31:18Speaker 4: he had a great, great day that day, but the
- 31:21Speaker 4: carryover effect and then not being able to get a
- 31:24Speaker 4: normal routine of your bullpen and your you know, whatever
- 31:27Speaker 4: your recovery is after that to get ready for that
- 31:29Speaker 4: next start, and it kind of you know, set him
- 31:31Speaker 4: off kilter a little bit. And uh, you know, I
- 31:34Speaker 4: think this will hopefully get him back on the tracks
- 31:37Speaker 4: and you know, back to what he was doing on
- 31:39Speaker 4: when he was on a roll, because it is it's
- 31:41Speaker 4: it's just guys are so hyper aware and it could
- 31:44Speaker 4: have been as something as simple as it just wasn't
- 31:46Speaker 4: coming out right, and instead of forcing it maybe having
- 31:50Speaker 4: a bad game, say he goes out and you know,
- 31:52Speaker 4: gives up six runs in a start again, and you know,
- 31:56Speaker 4: the Oakland's teeing off on him. Then we're sitting here like,
- 31:58Speaker 4: what's you know, the sky's falling.
- 32:00Speaker 3: You know.
- 32:00Speaker 4: So instead they probably did the right thing. Give him
- 32:03Speaker 4: a couple extra days, you know, make sure he is
- 32:05Speaker 4: one thousand percent ready to go and hopefully comes out
- 32:09Speaker 4: guns blazing, because that's you know, the if the boost
- 32:12Speaker 4: is there, it's him you know, come in, shut somebody down,
- 32:15Speaker 4: you know against Kansas City, you know, make a statement
- 32:18Speaker 4: outing and put some more momentum behind this team. Because
- 32:21Speaker 4: the more momentum they build, the front office has to
- 32:23Speaker 4: respond to that. And you know, like we keep talking about,
- 32:26Speaker 4: there's what move will be made. We don't know yet,
- 32:29Speaker 4: but it's really easy to add when all your guys
- 32:32Speaker 4: who are supposed to be your guys are doing what
- 32:34Speaker 4: you're expecting of them. But when guys start getting shaky
- 32:37Speaker 4: and you can't really predict or feel like you can
- 32:39Speaker 4: predict what's going to happen, it's it's hard to throw
- 32:42Speaker 4: money around or get rid of a prospect or anything
- 32:44Speaker 4: like that. So it's this like we keep saying these
- 32:47Speaker 4: next few or big games for very you know, many reasons.
- 32:52Speaker 1: On one of our sister shows on the Foul Territory
- 32:55Speaker 1: Network GM Territory, Jim Bowden, former MLBGM who also Right
- 33:01Speaker 1: to the Athletic also podcasts for Foul Territory, said that
- 33:04Speaker 1: he's being told that neither Joe Ryan nor Byron Buxton
- 33:08Speaker 1: will be traded at the deadline. I think we had
- 33:10Speaker 1: the Buxton talk had kind of cooled just because of
- 33:12Speaker 1: his pretty strong comments as it was, but Dan, it
- 33:17Speaker 1: certainly would make sense for that scenario to come to pass,
- 33:20Speaker 1: and now we're starting to see reports of that.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Yeah, with Buckston, I mean, we threw the turnoff meter
- 33:25Speaker 3: in the garbage like a month ago, right. However, however,
- 33:30Speaker 3: might have to sift that thing out if they trade
- 33:32Speaker 3: Joe Ryan, Like, look, I agree, I've not gotten insight
- 33:37Speaker 3: like that for sure. The Twins are doing a good
- 33:39Speaker 3: job of like being right down the middle because they
- 33:41Speaker 3: know it's really gonna go down to this. They got
- 33:43Speaker 3: to play well against Kansas City. They got to win
- 33:45Speaker 3: two or three against Kansas City. I mean, it seems
- 33:47Speaker 3: weird to think got to win two of three and
- 33:50Speaker 3: that determines which way they'll go. But they just need
- 33:53Speaker 3: to keep seeing more evidence of wins and they're going
- 33:55Speaker 3: to keep their options open. However, really, if you trade Joe,
- 34:00Speaker 3: you're going to have to have some conversations with Byron
- 34:03Speaker 3: Buckston that you don't want to have. And I don't
- 34:04Speaker 3: think that's coming from the Twins asking Byron Buckson if
- 34:07Speaker 3: he wants to be traded. I think that the plan
- 34:10Speaker 3: looks like it starts to change, and Byron Buckston worries
- 34:13Speaker 3: about pitching if they trade Joe Ryan. Like, it's a
- 34:17Speaker 3: natural question, what are we doing here? If we're in
- 34:19Speaker 3: the race, if we're right there and we trade Joe Ryan,
- 34:22Speaker 3: what are we doing here? And that's what I think
- 34:24Speaker 3: would be prominent on your three time All Star center
- 34:28Speaker 3: fielder's mind. So I think that that's a conversation you're
- 34:32Speaker 3: not going to have. I don't think that they have
- 34:34Speaker 3: any interest in moving on from Byron buckson. If you
- 34:37Speaker 3: trade Joe Ryan in the off season, you can say
- 34:40Speaker 3: to Byron Bucks, then look, we have Pablo Lopez come back,
- 34:42Speaker 3: but also we added this guy in free agency. You
- 34:45Speaker 3: can find a w You're not going to replace Joe
- 34:48Speaker 3: Ryan or even come close to replacing Joe Ryan at
- 34:51Speaker 3: the trade deadline if you trade him, unless somehow you
- 34:54Speaker 3: were able to swap him as like for Trek Scuobel, right, Like,
- 34:57Speaker 3: if you go out, there's really very few pitchers, and
- 35:00Speaker 3: obviously Schooble is better than Joe Ryan. I'm not trying
- 35:02Speaker 3: to say that that's the same thing, but value wise,
- 35:06Speaker 3: would Joe Ryan having the extra year that that's you know,
- 35:09Speaker 3: that wouldn't be an absurd thing to see those two
- 35:12Speaker 3: be in the same kind of trade because Detroit gets
- 35:15Speaker 3: the guy for another year. But the Twins aren't gonna
- 35:17Speaker 3: do that. The Tigers an't gonna do that. Never mind
- 35:19Speaker 3: that anyways, The point is if you trade Joe Ryan,
- 35:22Speaker 3: you're gonna have to have tough conversations that I don't
- 35:24Speaker 3: think you'll want to have. And given that, they haven't
- 35:27Speaker 3: said he's untradeable totally. But this is a team that
- 35:31Speaker 3: loves Byron bucks and I think they want Byron Buckston
- 35:34Speaker 3: to retire in a Twins uniform. And that makes me
- 35:36Speaker 3: think Joe Ryan the chances of him being traded are
- 35:40Speaker 3: basically zero at this point.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Trek Scoogel better than Joe Ryan, says Dan Hayes. Just
- 35:46Speaker 1: somebody somebody aggregate that print that on put it on
- 35:49Speaker 1: Joe's locker. His loyalty has been refreshing and amazing to see.
- 35:57Speaker 1: But at some point, yeah, unless you love you know,
- 36:01Speaker 1: Lake Minitanta more than you love winning, like you're you're
- 36:04Speaker 1: not going to stay loyal forever, so and like don't and.
- 36:08Speaker 3: Also don't put him in that position, Like just don't
- 36:10Speaker 3: put him in that position like he is he is
- 36:13Speaker 3: giving you this.
- 36:15Speaker 4: All next season right, not when they're in the in
- 36:18Speaker 4: the hunt, you know, and it might be like it
- 36:21Speaker 4: might make a lot more sense and be more reasonable
- 36:23Speaker 4: than if Pablo is back, if Todge continues to be strung,
- 36:25Speaker 4: if they have, if they have the pieces were leaving
- 36:27Speaker 4: him right right, you've got it's.
- 36:31Speaker 3: A lot easier to sell, like to put up a
- 36:34Speaker 3: white flag, because that's what you're doing if you trade
- 36:36Speaker 3: Joe Ryan, Like, even if you're right on the cusp,
- 36:39Speaker 3: Look look at what this how flawed this team is
- 36:42Speaker 3: and they're fifty three and fifty four. Still they are
- 36:44Speaker 3: a game out of the final wild card spot. They
- 36:48Speaker 3: just beat Cleveland, too, are they They split with Cleveland
- 36:51Speaker 3: like they didn't. They didn't wilt in Cleveland they could
- 36:54Speaker 3: have and they're right there again Cleveland got swept in Tampa.
- 36:59Speaker 3: I mean, you've got to think, like you can't raise
- 37:02Speaker 3: the white flag at this point, Joe or Tom Pollad
- 37:05Speaker 3: would be going against everything he wanted to do and
- 37:08Speaker 3: accomplish with players, trust, with trying to win back fans
- 37:13Speaker 3: if they were to sell at this point, Trading Joe
- 37:15Speaker 3: Ryan is selling even like it's just I just don't
- 37:19Speaker 3: know how you've solved that without screwing up team chemistry
- 37:23Speaker 3: and what he means because right now, when he steps
- 37:25Speaker 3: on the mound, it's the day they're going to win.
- 37:27Speaker 3: And they have belief in him. He's been their guy
- 37:31Speaker 3: since twenty twenty one. They love playing behind him. He's entertaining,
- 37:36Speaker 3: he's got character like this that's just not the trader making.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Well.
- 37:42Speaker 1: This is going to be our longest episode ever, I think,
- 37:44Speaker 1: but that's okay. It's good stuff. There's two other names
- 37:47Speaker 1: on the chiron at the bottom of the screen that
- 37:49Speaker 1: I wanted to touch on. First is Ryan Jeffers, who
- 37:52Speaker 1: still probably remains the most likely player on the way out,
- 37:55Speaker 1: and that may have only gotten more likely this weekend. Ironically,
- 37:58Speaker 1: at Target Field with shape Langlears the A's All star
- 38:02Speaker 1: catcher getting hurt. Depending on what you read, it seemed
- 38:05Speaker 1: like the A's were not particularly keen on trading him
- 38:08Speaker 1: because he has a lot of team controlled and they
- 38:10Speaker 1: want to have some good players when they open their
- 38:12Speaker 1: Las Vegas stadium in a few years. But nevertheless, the
- 38:15Speaker 1: right offer comes along, you never know, that's one less
- 38:18Speaker 1: desirable catcher on the market. Jeffers was already at the
- 38:20Speaker 1: top of the list, and now Dan it just seems
- 38:23Speaker 1: even more likely.
- 38:25Speaker 3: I mean, he's certainly the best catcher available, and he's
- 38:28Speaker 3: hit and hit and hit. Teams that take a monograph
- 38:32Speaker 3: to know that they're going to manage that hamate bone
- 38:36Speaker 3: for a while, and you know, I like, that's something
- 38:39Speaker 3: that's going to be part of the calculus. But he's
- 38:44Speaker 3: easily the most valuable catcher, and he can make a
- 38:47Speaker 3: team a winner. The thing is, do the Twins want
- 38:49Speaker 3: to upset the balance of their chemistry? And I do.
- 38:52Speaker 3: I recognize they have two catchers and Alex Jackson's continuing
- 38:55Speaker 3: to hit for average and playing really well in a
- 38:58Speaker 3: minimal role, but they do dip a lot losing Jeffers
- 39:03Speaker 3: game calling knowledge, his ABS knowledge, and I mean, he's
- 39:07Speaker 3: hitting for a ton of power. He's been a force
- 39:10Speaker 3: in the middle of the lineup and the guy they
- 39:11Speaker 3: can rely on because that first two months it was
- 39:14Speaker 3: Byron Buckston and Ryan Jeffers were the guys hitting consistently
- 39:18Speaker 3: in April and May when the rest of the lineup
- 39:20Speaker 3: was kind of struggling. But if that solves a woe,
- 39:24Speaker 3: if you've got a really good relief pitcher, if you've
- 39:26Speaker 3: got I don't know what the market is for rental catcher.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Rental players have had very stingy They've not gotten a
- 39:35Speaker 3: ton of return in the last couple of years. But
- 39:37Speaker 3: you're talking about the best player available at that position,
- 39:41Speaker 3: and it makes you think like teams are going to
- 39:44Speaker 3: overpay for Scooble. They are going to give the Tigers
- 39:47Speaker 3: a ton I think if you are talking about a
- 39:50Speaker 3: catcher that's such a thinned out position availability wise, the
- 39:55Speaker 3: Yankees need him, the Rays could use him. The only
- 39:57Speaker 3: thing is if you do that, you're feeding your some
- 40:00Speaker 3: of your opponents, like the guys you the teams you
- 40:03Speaker 3: might want to play in October. Right, It's a it's
- 40:06Speaker 3: a tough line to dance, because he certainly can get
- 40:09Speaker 3: you major league help back. I would think, what.
- 40:12Speaker 1: What do you make of the clubhouse factor there, Tyler,
- 40:14Speaker 1: Because obviously chemistry is legit, but also at some point
- 40:18Speaker 1: players have to understand the logic of some of these
- 40:21Speaker 1: moves and understand why this one, if you're trying to
- 40:24Speaker 1: improve this team down the road, might make sense.
- 40:27Speaker 4: That's that's why I've kind of I've been stuck on
- 40:29Speaker 4: him as the one guy that is safe because of that.
- 40:33Speaker 4: It's you know, yes, he's been there, he was drafted
- 40:35Speaker 4: by the Twins, you know all the good stuff that
- 40:38Speaker 4: comes along with that. But he's going to walk this year.
- 40:41Speaker 4: He's a free agent. Like everyone knows he's leaving. He's
- 40:44Speaker 4: going to get paid. He's going to be one of
- 40:46Speaker 4: the highly sought after catchers on the market this year.
- 40:49Speaker 4: And if you're Minnesota, we kind of talked about it
- 40:52Speaker 4: as Kroteina and we found the ball of his kneecap.
- 40:55Speaker 4: You know, Jackson's been serviceable when he's played. You have
- 40:59Speaker 4: a bit of a C or plus. You know, he's
- 41:02Speaker 4: a guy you could get a lot for, you know,
- 41:04Speaker 4: other other than Joe who has you know, one year
- 41:07Speaker 4: of control left, Like he's probably your next option to
- 41:10Speaker 4: get the best return and if you're gonna lose him anyways,
- 41:14Speaker 4: you know it's it's a move that makes sense. It's logical,
- 41:17Speaker 4: and the players know that, like he knows that. You know,
- 41:20Speaker 4: he's probably already got his agent, you know, in his ear,
- 41:23Speaker 4: like you know, teams or whatever, you know, murmuring. You know,
- 41:27Speaker 4: it's one. It's definitely a weird time. But as a
- 41:31Speaker 4: player in that situation, you hear guys talk about it.
- 41:34Speaker 4: You know, I was never traded, but it's it's nice
- 41:37Speaker 4: sometimes to be that guy. You know, it tells you, like, hey,
- 41:41Speaker 4: you are really good at baseball, Like you're a really
- 41:43Speaker 4: good big leaguer. When a team wants you, like that
- 41:46Speaker 4: does something for guys, and you know, to that point,
- 41:50Speaker 4: he can go get traded to a big you know,
- 41:52Speaker 4: big city somewhere, you go to New York or LA
- 41:55Speaker 4: or you know, pick the place and and get a
- 41:57Speaker 4: taste of that before he hits free agency. Like there's
- 41:59Speaker 4: a lot of positives that come from it. You know,
- 42:02Speaker 4: he's not a guy that needs to change the scenery.
- 42:04Speaker 4: He's not a guy that needs to go anywhere. But
- 42:07Speaker 4: for the Twins and the front office in particular, it's
- 42:10Speaker 4: a chance to get something legitimate in return. You know,
- 42:13Speaker 4: a lot of Farland last year, you know Jeffers. This year,
- 42:17Speaker 4: you get something good in return, maybe a guy that
- 42:19Speaker 4: can impact the team tomorrow. You know, it's one of
- 42:23Speaker 4: those moves. It's good for everyone, and that's what you want.
- 42:26Speaker 4: At the end of the day. They can as Dan
- 42:28Speaker 4: said earlier, a trade can be good for both teams,
- 42:30Speaker 4: and this is a situation where Brian Jeffers could land
- 42:33Speaker 4: in a great spot go win a World Series potentially,
- 42:36Speaker 4: and the Twins could get something back to help them
- 42:38Speaker 4: make a playoff push.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Right, that's a great point, Like it doesn't have to
- 42:41Speaker 1: be just for prospects, you know, they they could they
- 42:44Speaker 1: could get a return that helps them right now in
- 42:46Speaker 1: a different different area. Victor Carroll, Yeah, that's easier to sell, yeap,
- 42:53Speaker 1: Victor Victor Carrottini hitting two eighty three since late May.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Yeah, no, look more in twenty two when Jeffers was down,
- 43:01Speaker 3: are the twins four and twenty two they more than
- 43:04Speaker 3: held their own. It's not like it is just wondering
- 43:09Speaker 3: what because because there is a difference between Alex Jackson's
- 43:13Speaker 3: book of knowledge with writers, right, and clearly he is
- 43:18Speaker 3: not the abs guy that Jeffers and kroteniar and we've
- 43:22Speaker 3: seen that where he's his percentage is not as good
- 43:25Speaker 3: on challenges you lose there. But Jackson's done a nice
- 43:28Speaker 3: job thoughing it like it's they did a good job
- 43:31Speaker 3: more than tread and water when you lost a guy
- 43:34Speaker 3: like Jeffers. Yeah.
- 43:36Speaker 1: A name that we that we haven't talked about as
- 43:39Speaker 1: much lately, Matt Walner, who is shredding in TRIPA A
- 43:42Speaker 1: two eighty four with nineteen homers since getting sent down
- 43:45Speaker 1: to the Saints. The team just doesn't have room for
- 43:49Speaker 1: him in the outfield. Guys and Dan, it seems like
- 43:52Speaker 1: he could potentially get a return despite not playing in
- 43:54Speaker 1: the big leagues for two months.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Yes, first, I'm going to do the other side thing
- 43:59Speaker 3: that I always do. Okay, Look, we never would have
- 44:01Speaker 3: thought that Trevor Larnick was going to be a part
- 44:04Speaker 3: of this team. Everybody in media, everybody in the area
- 44:08Speaker 3: last year thought Trevor Larnik. They weren't going tender in
- 44:10Speaker 3: a contract, and then when they did, it was like, wait,
- 44:12Speaker 3: what are they doing. They're giving up four million, four
- 44:16Speaker 3: point five million of their one hundred and seven million
- 44:18Speaker 3: dollars to a guy that they has kind of redundant.
- 44:21Speaker 3: And then Trevor Larnak basically just made us all look
- 44:24Speaker 3: stupid all season long. Right, Matt Wallner, it doesn't look
- 44:29Speaker 3: like there's a lot of spots coming going forward, and
- 44:32Speaker 3: he's been outstanding, Like in July alone, it's he's hit
- 44:35Speaker 3: in three oh seven, He's got seven homers in July.
- 44:37Speaker 3: So you mentioned the two eighty four nineteen homers. It's
- 44:39Speaker 3: been even better in July hit two the other day
- 44:43Speaker 3: at TRIPAA, And yet I don't know where he's going
- 44:47Speaker 3: to play for this team unless you traded Trevor Larnock
- 44:50Speaker 3: and then maybe you brought up Matt Waalner. Maybe that's
- 44:52Speaker 3: the play. I don't know. But when you look at
- 44:55Speaker 3: the future and how clouded it is, Alan Rhoden's here,
- 44:59Speaker 3: You've got Martin, you got Buston Clemens, takes some time
- 45:02Speaker 3: in outfield, key Shaw's out there now, and it looks
- 45:05Speaker 3: like Keyshaw's gonna be in the outfield, and Walker Jenkins
- 45:08Speaker 3: is pretty much ready. So like, where does Matt Walner
- 45:11Speaker 3: fit in this picture? And I don't know that a
- 45:15Speaker 3: contending team is gonna go, yeah, we want Matt Walner.
- 45:17Speaker 3: I don't think the Yankees are gonna look at it
- 45:19Speaker 3: and go, yeah, we want Matt Walner. But does a
- 45:21Speaker 3: team like the Rockies, does a team like the Reds,
- 45:24Speaker 3: does a team like Los Angeles Angels look at Matt
- 45:27Speaker 3: Walner and go, He's got three years a team control left.
- 45:30Speaker 3: He's a one twenty eight ops plus guy. And like,
- 45:33Speaker 3: if you're in a warmer spot, like what if maybe
- 45:37Speaker 3: the early season slump is because he's going from ninety
- 45:41Speaker 3: degree Florida, Minnesota. It's every year. Hey hey, let me
- 45:52Speaker 3: just ask you this. How long when you moved? Because
- 45:55Speaker 3: that how long did you live in southern California?
- 45:57Speaker 7: Fourth?
- 46:00Speaker 2: Almost twelve years?
- 46:01Speaker 3: Okay, how long did it take the blood to get
- 46:03Speaker 3: used to the cold weather again?
- 46:04Speaker 2: When you day? One day?
- 46:06Speaker 3: One day? One? Sure? Uh huh sure. Matt Walner lives
- 46:09Speaker 3: in Mississippi. He went to southern miss He has a
- 46:12Speaker 3: house right on the Gulf. Matt Waalner is not as
- 46:15Speaker 3: as far as as far as one of us, which
- 46:19Speaker 3: I'm not one of us, but as far as one
- 46:22Speaker 3: of us, he is one of us during the baseball season.
- 46:25Speaker 3: So that's a big man. Those are a lot of
- 46:27Speaker 3: body parts that take time to get moving in the
- 46:29Speaker 3: cold weather. If you're like the Twins, don't you say,
- 46:32Speaker 3: look angels like, hey, we can, we can. It's so
- 46:36Speaker 3: much warmer in southern California in April and May. It won't.
- 46:39Speaker 3: He won't start in these massive slumps to start the season,
- 46:42Speaker 3: because look, when the weather warms up. Matt Walner is
- 46:44Speaker 3: amazing every year. This happened to him two years ago,
- 46:47Speaker 3: This happened to him in twenty twenty three, he came
- 46:49Speaker 3: up and was like a mid season edition and was
- 46:51Speaker 3: just so clutch. He gets going in June and July
- 46:54Speaker 3: every year it's it's like just his amo and he's
- 46:59Speaker 3: a one to twenty eighth PS plus player for his
- 47:01Speaker 3: career before this year, somebody might see value in that
- 47:04Speaker 3: and say, we'll give you this intriguing arm, like a
- 47:08Speaker 3: better version of last year as brock Stewart for James
- 47:10Speaker 3: Outman swap where brock Stewart certainly was a good reliever
- 47:14Speaker 3: when he's healthy, but when he's healthy is such a
- 47:16Speaker 3: huge part of that that it only fetched them James
- 47:19Speaker 3: Outman and James Outman. We like, if brock Stewart was
- 47:22Speaker 3: even a little bit healthier, you might've got a pretty
- 47:25Speaker 3: interesting player in that. So if Matt Wallner has this
- 47:28Speaker 3: track record, we're not talking about like as struggling like
- 47:32Speaker 3: Outman's like fifty percent as a bat's resultant strikeouts, it's
- 47:36Speaker 3: not it's not there, and Walner has done this. So
- 47:40Speaker 3: could one of those teams take a shot and give
- 47:42Speaker 3: them back an intriguing arm that wouldn't be that'd be
- 47:46Speaker 3: interesting to me. I mean, look, how's he going to
- 47:48Speaker 3: replace the guy that saves fainting children. Like that's that's
- 47:52Speaker 3: who's next in line. Walker Jenkins is the next guy
- 47:55Speaker 3: to go. And Walker Jenkins plays a lot better defense.
- 47:58Speaker 3: He just fits better. Yeah, that was kind of so
- 48:02Speaker 3: like maybe if it was Larnick. Maybe if they traded
- 48:04Speaker 3: Larnick and and you know, somebody mentioned that to me,
- 48:07Speaker 3: is like, look, everybody looked at us and thought we
- 48:09Speaker 3: were dumb for bringing back Trevor Larnick and get here
- 48:12Speaker 3: he is, like if Larnick, they moved on from Larnick
- 48:15Speaker 3: after this season, Walner still has three years of team
- 48:17Speaker 3: control life. That's interesting. And I know we're running along.
- 48:20Speaker 3: I can see the Zach face for running along, So
- 48:22Speaker 3: I'll let you.
- 48:23Speaker 1: No, I'm just gonna add if if you if you
- 48:27Speaker 1: deal Walner and he ends up good somewhere else, you
- 48:31Speaker 1: could you tease you could trade him for Aaron Judge
- 48:33Speaker 1: and people will never let you forget that you traded
- 48:35Speaker 1: away to local, local product.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Who made one of us. One of us.
- 48:40Speaker 4: They kept us Waldough Arcia forever because David Ortiz was
- 48:44Speaker 4: haunting their dreams. Arius David Arius, That's right.
- 48:52Speaker 1: David Ortiz does haunt the dreams, along with several other
- 48:56Speaker 1: players in Minnesota sports history who we decided.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Need anymore.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Up next. We'll make this quick, but we've got three
- 49:04Speaker 1: games with the Royals. Twins are off on Monday, back
- 49:07Speaker 1: to work Tuesday before heading out to Seattle for the
- 49:10Speaker 1: last series before the trade deadline. TOAJ Bradley, Joe Ryan,
- 49:14Speaker 1: Bailey Ober the scheduled starters.
- 49:17Speaker 2: In that order.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Old friend Randy Dobnak will be on the mound against
- 49:21Speaker 1: Joe Ryan on Wednesday. It's Seth Lugo on Tuesday against TODJ. Bradley,
- 49:25Speaker 1: and then.
- 49:26Speaker 2: In the h Did I get that right?
- 49:29Speaker 4: Yes?
- 49:29Speaker 1: And then Thursday, the day game, Noah Cameron takes on
- 49:32Speaker 1: Bailly Over. Twins have not played well against the Royals
- 49:35Speaker 1: this year, Tyler. But if ever there was a time
- 49:39Speaker 1: to figure that out, it's now.
- 49:41Speaker 4: Yeah. And the Royal I mean, the roads are down bad,
- 49:43Speaker 4: Bobby's out. You know, they've had their struggles within, you know,
- 49:46Speaker 4: things like that. But you know, those those pitchers going
- 49:49Speaker 4: for them are guys that you know. Seth Lugo obviously
- 49:52Speaker 4: I was there with them. He's the guy who he
- 49:54Speaker 4: breaks down every hitter that's in that lineup, and he's
- 49:57Speaker 4: going to attack their weak spots and if he's on,
- 50:00Speaker 4: he can be a tough customer. You know, we know Randy,
- 50:03Speaker 4: he's gonna get a lot of ground balls. You know,
- 50:06Speaker 4: he's getting more swing and miss with his stuff. You
- 50:08Speaker 4: know that Noah Cameron's another good lefty. Like it's not
- 50:11Speaker 4: gonna be a slouch of a series by any means.
- 50:14Speaker 4: You know, it's one you got to make sure and
- 50:16Speaker 4: show up ready to play baseball because you know, you
- 50:19Speaker 4: got to score runs to win, and if you get
- 50:20Speaker 4: shut shut down like we did in that Friday game,
- 50:24Speaker 4: you know it could go south pretty quickly. But you
- 50:26Speaker 4: know this is another series where show up, put some
- 50:29Speaker 4: pressure early, you know, get into the bullpen, you know,
- 50:32Speaker 4: get those guys in the game and just keep attacking
- 50:36Speaker 4: because it's you know, like yesterday's game, they kept applying
- 50:39Speaker 4: a little bit of pressure. You know, a few errors
- 50:41Speaker 4: obviously helped them get outlong. But you know, the more
- 50:44Speaker 4: pressure you put on these teams and the more times
- 50:46Speaker 4: you get into that bullpen, you know, it's it makes
- 50:48Speaker 4: for a fun series. And you know the Royals are
- 50:51Speaker 4: they're not in the mix, but they're they're looking for
- 50:53Speaker 4: any sign of life. You know, get some momentum going
- 50:56Speaker 4: in that locker room, and you know they still have salvy,
- 50:59Speaker 4: They've still got some guys that can swing the bat
- 51:01Speaker 4: and they can get you if you let them. So
- 51:02Speaker 4: it's one you know, show up ready to play baseball
- 51:05Speaker 4: because otherwise it can change. This whole conversation we just
- 51:08Speaker 4: had turns into So next year is going to be
- 51:11Speaker 4: this for the Twins, you know, instead of worrying about playoffs.
- 51:13Speaker 4: So it's a it's definitely a big one. You know,
- 51:16Speaker 4: getting the first one always matters the most, So take them,
- 51:19Speaker 4: take full advantage of this off day, get ready and
- 51:21Speaker 4: and you know, watch some video to get ready for
- 51:23Speaker 4: these guys where you see him.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Third worst team the Ale by winning percentage. They're eleven
- 51:30Speaker 1: and a half out in the Central so eight games
- 51:32Speaker 1: worse than the Twins. Now, are you gonna be there
- 51:35Speaker 1: for this one?
- 51:36Speaker 3: I am? And I can't wait to talk to Randy
- 51:38Speaker 3: Dobnach real quick. Randy Dobnack story twenty nineteen, The Rookie
- 51:44Speaker 3: dress up trip. Randy Dobnach was leaving Detroit Is after
- 51:48Speaker 3: they clinched I believe and or maybe wedding. Yeah, I
- 51:53Speaker 3: had to leave for his wedding and Rocco let him go.
- 51:55Speaker 3: And now look, remember Randy Dobnack started that year in
- 51:58Speaker 3: a ball and through the minor leagues. I think it
- 52:01Speaker 3: was his fourth stop to get to the majors because
- 52:03Speaker 3: the Twins were desperate for arms, and he had already
- 52:06Speaker 3: planned his wedding because what is a minor leaguer doing
- 52:08Speaker 3: at the end of September. They're not playing right, and
- 52:11Speaker 3: especially when you're an a ball and your guy that
- 52:13Speaker 3: got scouted off a computer, off YouTube videos or like
- 52:18Speaker 3: like that's how they found him. Billy Mellose like longtime
- 52:21Speaker 3: legendary Twins scout. Now he's with the Rockies as a scout,
- 52:25Speaker 3: but Billy found him on video and was like, hey,
- 52:27Speaker 3: this guy, there's something there. Anyways, he's supposed to get married,
- 52:31Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden he's in the majors
- 52:32Speaker 3: and Rocco lets him go. But it's the rookie dress
- 52:35Speaker 3: up trip on the flight, and Randy knew he couldn't
- 52:38Speaker 3: get away with it, and so like he fully got
- 52:43Speaker 3: through Detroit, he went to dtw dressed as Ben Steller's
- 52:50Speaker 3: character from Dodgeball. The Global Gym, The The.
- 52:53Speaker 4: Global Gym Guys.
- 52:56Speaker 3: He he full on went through security dressed in dodgeball gear,
- 53:04Speaker 3: and like, I I think that's like speaks so much
- 53:08Speaker 3: to who this guy is, Like like he knew he
- 53:11Speaker 3: was already getting a break, getting to go leave his
- 53:14Speaker 3: team to get married in the middle of the season,
- 53:17Speaker 3: but he dressed up like he he did not try
- 53:20Speaker 3: to get out of Like how easy would it have
- 53:22Speaker 3: been to get out of the rookie dress up and
- 53:25Speaker 3: by himself, not a single Twins person with him just
- 53:28Speaker 3: having to go through security. Can you imagine going, you know,
- 53:32Speaker 3: and and talking to any of the security officers being
- 53:36Speaker 3: like what what what is that in your bag? Sir?
- 53:41Speaker 3: Like like he's like full on just like talking to people,
- 53:44Speaker 3: having a great time, because that's Randy dob Maack And
- 53:47Speaker 3: I just wanted to bring that story to light and
- 53:49Speaker 3: appreciate it.
- 53:50Speaker 4: Because it's amazing. Goodman, I got a good I got
- 53:57Speaker 4: a good dress up story for whenever that time comes,
- 54:00Speaker 4: a really good one. We'll save it.
- 54:02Speaker 1: We're gonna save it all right, Yeah, still listing at
- 54:05Speaker 1: this point anyway. Twins once again off today evening games
- 54:12Speaker 1: Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, the Guardians are in Cincinnati,
- 54:16Speaker 1: White Sox at home against the Yankees, and they both
- 54:18Speaker 1: play tonight, so there will be some movement for the
- 54:21Speaker 1: Twins in the standings even though they are off today.
