1:50
Speaker 3: End of the workweek, and I swear to me, this
1:54
Speaker 3: has been the longest work week in the history of
1:57
Speaker 3: work weeks. It seems like maybe I guess it's the weather.
2:02
Speaker 3: I don't know. It just seems like this week has
2:04
Speaker 3: just gone on and on forever, and I'm thinking there's
2:07
Speaker 3: no way that it's thought this yesterday I thought there's
2:10
Speaker 3: no way it's Thursday. What out is Friday? And I
2:12
Speaker 3: guess what? We got? More winter weather moving in. We're
2:15
Speaker 3: under a winter weather advisory and our part of the
2:17
Speaker 3: world now, many of us around us are under a
2:20
Speaker 3: winter storm warning. It depends on where you live. We'll
2:23
Speaker 3: get in that a little bit later on as to
2:24
Speaker 3: what you're gonna get, But it's you know, I guess
2:26
Speaker 3: the bad thing is it's on top of what we
2:28
Speaker 3: already have now. So whether we get a couple of
2:31
Speaker 3: inches or we get up to five, which is the
2:33
Speaker 3: worst case scenario, it's just on top of the mess
2:36
Speaker 3: that we have out there now. So that's where we are.
2:38
Speaker 3: But if you need something to be happy about, I
2:40
Speaker 3: was looking ahead at the extended forecast. For what it's worth,
2:43
Speaker 3: there is one day next week and I'll have to
2:46
Speaker 3: quickly take a look at it here. I think it
2:49
Speaker 3: was next Friday. The high temperature here in Charleston is
2:53
Speaker 3: expected to be forty three degrees and on Sunday we've
2:57
Speaker 3: got sunny skies. This is this Sunday and thirty eight.
3:01
Speaker 3: But then we're going to go back into the twenties
3:03
Speaker 3: and temperatures near zero overnight next week. So that concludes
3:06
Speaker 3: the weather Forecast loaded up show today. Coming up a
3:09
Speaker 3: little bit later on, Rob Real from our Sisters station
3:11
Speaker 3: right across the hall from US ninety six to one KWS.
3:14
Speaker 3: He's back again with another project. He's always up to something.
3:17
Speaker 3: There's gonna be a This is one of those events
3:19
Speaker 3: that all of our stations are involved with. It's the
3:21
Speaker 3: second annual WVRC Media of Charleston Sock Dropped, where all
3:26
Speaker 3: of our stations get together. We'll be setting up on
3:28
Speaker 3: the parking lot here at eleven eleven Virginia Street. He's
3:31
Speaker 3: coming up on the twenty third of January seven am
3:33
Speaker 3: until six pm and we're going to be asking you
3:36
Speaker 3: to drop off your donations of socks that we can
3:38
Speaker 3: be given to those they'll be distributed actually through Union Mission.
3:42
Speaker 3: And this is kind of Rob's baby, and so he's
3:44
Speaker 3: going to join us a little bit later on on
3:45
Speaker 3: the show. It's brought to you by Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration.
3:48
Speaker 3: Also on the show, Tiffany Hobin from the Cardinal Listitude's
3:52
Speaker 3: going to stop by. We've all heard around the state.
3:55
Speaker 3: We've certainly experienced here in Canawa County the issues with
3:58
Speaker 3: school consolidation and there have been many that have said
4:01
Speaker 3: that some of the issues to school consolidation around the
4:04
Speaker 3: state of Western Virginia are are because of things like
4:07
Speaker 3: charter schools and on private schools, people homeschooling choosing other methods. Well,
4:12
Speaker 3: Tiffany and the Cardinal Institute say, hold on a second,
4:16
Speaker 3: not so fast, my friend, So we're going to talk
4:19
Speaker 3: to her about that. Plus Joel Gates is going to
4:22
Speaker 3: join us to talk a little girl Scout cookies. So
4:23
Speaker 3: all that and more. Kep it up and your calls
4:25
Speaker 3: and text are always welcome. Big Lely Pigli Wiggly Hotline

4:30
Speaker 3: Tony the Taylor Text three zero four nine three five
4:33
Speaker 3: five zero zero eight. Now normally at this time we
4:35
Speaker 3: would go to our good friend Handa Gardner from the
4:37
Speaker 3: Kannaal Charleston Humane Association with this week's Adopt Me Please
4:40
Speaker 3: pet of the Week. No Hannah today, and I talked
4:42
Speaker 3: to her earlier this morning. The reason for that is
4:45
Speaker 3: is because with the incoming weather sometimes they have to
4:48
Speaker 3: you know, close a little bit early, and it looks
4:51
Speaker 3: like the snow in the second round. The next round,
4:53
Speaker 3: not second the next round is going to move in
4:55
Speaker 3: at some point mid afternoon here in the Canal Valley,
4:58
Speaker 3: maybe on your drive home, and so they got things
5:00
Speaker 3: that they got to do. It's kind of get ready
5:02
Speaker 3: for that. So Hannah was not a bit I know.
5:04
Speaker 3: I was following it on their social media. Earlier this week,
5:08
Speaker 3: several of the employees there spent the night with the animals.
5:11
Speaker 3: They're at the Animal Animal shelters, so Hannah was all
5:15
Speaker 3: tied up with that. So I don't have her on
5:16
Speaker 3: the show today. I do have our pet though, as
5:19
Speaker 3: always our adopt me please put it. The week's picture
5:21
Speaker 3: is posted at Dave Allan Radio on Facebook and at
5:24
Speaker 3: Dave a seventy on x the artist formally known as Twitter.
5:28
Speaker 3: It is a lovely dog by the name of Sonny.
5:30
Speaker 3: How appropriate with the week we've had. Sonny is twenty
5:34
Speaker 3: nine pounds, a neutered male. He is one year and
5:39
Speaker 3: three months old, and Hannah tells me that he prefers
5:42
Speaker 3: calmer dogs. He does walk very very well on a leash.
5:47
Speaker 3: He's a very laid back and well mannered creature. Would
5:51
Speaker 3: make a great family dog. And they've got this adoption
5:55
Speaker 3: fee at the shelter. It's twenty five dollars and you
5:58
Speaker 3: can take Sonny home. And also if you're into the
6:01
Speaker 3: fostering of the animals, and we talked about that in
6:05
Speaker 3: the past, as there's a lot of folks sometimes that
6:09
Speaker 3: for one reason or another they can't adopt one fully,
6:14
Speaker 3: but they are willing to foster. He would make a
6:16
Speaker 3: great dog to be fostered out. So he's a beautiful,
6:19
Speaker 3: beautiful dog. Again, his name is Sonny. He's twenty nine pounds.
6:23
Speaker 3: He's a neutered male, one year and three months old,
6:26
Speaker 3: prefers calmer dogs, walks well on a leash, very laid
6:29
Speaker 3: back dog, very well manned. Would be a great family dog.
6:31
Speaker 3: And you can get him for only twenty five dollars.
6:34
Speaker 3: That having been said, as far as you normally ask
6:37
Speaker 3: Canada the things that they need up at the animal shelter,
6:40
Speaker 3: and this time of year and year round, they always
6:42
Speaker 3: need donations of all kinds of stuff. Dry food they
6:47
Speaker 3: can use, they can use old rugs, they can use, washcloths, towels,
6:51
Speaker 3: things of that nature, anything that you can do to
6:54
Speaker 3: help them out, because the animals suffer at this time
6:57
Speaker 3: and when you have the weather that we've had this week. Times,
7:00
Speaker 3: a lot of them are a little bit timid as
7:01
Speaker 3: far as getting them to go out, and they're not
7:04
Speaker 3: available to do that, or they don't want to do
7:05
Speaker 3: that or whatever. So they could probably use your help
7:09
Speaker 3: up here at the Animal Shelter with these donations, and
7:12
Speaker 3: before you know it, we're gonna get through all this
7:13
Speaker 3: nasty weather and they will be out and about doing
7:18
Speaker 3: all these different events in Charleston. So help out the
7:21
Speaker 3: Animal Shelter if you can. Texas, that dog sounds perfect
7:26
Speaker 3: for me if I could have one. I'm married, so
7:29
Speaker 3: I'm neutered and prefer calmer situations as well, says a
7:34
Speaker 3: textor Yeah, I'm right there with you. But Dave Islands
7:38
Speaker 3: showing five any live broad to you apart by your
7:40
Speaker 3: hometown baseball team, the Charleston dirty Birds. Maybe winter time now,
7:43
Speaker 3: but before you know it, we are going to be

Speaker 3: playing baseball over at Gomart Ballpark. Check out the twenty
7:48
Speaker 3: twenty five Dirty Birds schedule, plus Birds merchandise and more
7:50
Speaker 3: available at Dirtybirds baseball dot com. So let's review again
7:54
Speaker 3: our pet of the week, Sonny. He's twenty nine pounds.
7:58
Speaker 3: He's a neutered male one three months old. Does prefer
8:02
Speaker 3: calmer dogs, walks very well unleash, very laid back dog,
8:06
Speaker 3: very well mannered, would be a great family dog and
8:08
Speaker 3: the twenty five dollars adoption fee continues would make a
8:11
Speaker 3: great dog for foster as well. So if you would
8:15
Speaker 3: be interested, just contact the folks of the Canal Charleston
8:18
Speaker 3: Humane Association. And again, if you want to see Sonny's picture,
8:21
Speaker 3: I've got Sonny posted on my social media. You can

12:50
Speaker 7: Good morning Dave, and thank you for having me. And
12:53
Speaker 7: I appreciate my place in the lineup because nestled in
12:56
Speaker 7: with dogs and Girl Scout Cookies is a great place
12:58
Speaker 7: to be.
13:00
Speaker 3: Well, you know, there's there's worse things, right, and you
13:02
Speaker 3: got rob Real fromation. You got rob Real from her
13:06
Speaker 3: sister Station ninety six one k WUS and no one
13:08
Speaker 3: wants to be near that. So so I got to
13:10
Speaker 3: I got to conveniently uh nestled in here on this spot.
13:14
Speaker 3: All right, So, uh, Tiffany, you you recently wrote a
13:17
Speaker 3: piece and it was picked up by the Gazette Mail
13:20
Speaker 3: here in Charleston about school consolidation, and in that you
13:23
Speaker 3: opine that, uh and we all know, as I mentioned
13:26
Speaker 3: at the top of the show, we all know that
13:28
Speaker 3: school consolidation is a very complex issue. And we've seen
13:31
Speaker 3: it here in Kanawha County, but it's happened all over
13:33
Speaker 3: the state of West Virginia and all over the country.
13:35
Speaker 3: You know, I guess for that matter. But but and
13:37
Speaker 3: I don't want put words in your mouth, but you
13:39
Speaker 3: assert that school choice, as many have said, school choice
13:43
Speaker 3: I'm talking about school choice is uh. Is is not
13:48
Speaker 3: to blame here because others have said that maybe it
13:52
Speaker 3: is with some of the school consolidation. Taken it from there.
13:56
Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, school choice is not the main culpriate here. Enrollment.
14:04
Speaker 7: Student enrollment in West Virginia schools and all over the
14:07
Speaker 7: country and public schools has been declining for years. I mean,
14:10
Speaker 7: just since COVID we've lost enrollment in West Virginia ten
14:14
Speaker 7: thousand students. So there are a lot of other factors
14:18
Speaker 7: that are driving their enrollment decline. Like you know, birth
14:21
Speaker 7: rates are going down, particularly in a state like West
14:23
Speaker 7: Virginia where like negative fourteen percent, and parents are choosing
14:28
Speaker 7: alternatives and they're taking their kids out of school to
14:32
Speaker 7: use the Hope Scholarship. That is a little fliver of that.
14:37
Speaker 7: Our student enrollment in West Virginia is down thirty thousand
14:40
Speaker 7: students in the last twenty years. So that's not the
14:43
Speaker 7: main culprit here.
14:45
Speaker 3: Why is it? And other people have weighed in on
14:48
Speaker 3: this as well, So I'll give you the opportunity, Tiffany,
14:50
Speaker 3: why are more parents choosing alternatives to traditional public schools
14:55
Speaker 3: in your.
14:55
Speaker 7: Opinion, Yeah, that's such an interesting question because it's like,
14:59
Speaker 7: it's my opinion. Families do calculus on what works for them,
15:04
Speaker 7: and there could be a plethora of reasons. We know
15:07
Speaker 7: that post COVID parents were pulling their kids out of
15:12
Speaker 7: public school because their values didn't align with what they
15:16
Speaker 7: were seeing on the screen. They felt like maybe the
15:19
Speaker 7: proficiency rates, perhaps their children were being challenged enough, the
15:22
Speaker 7: curriculum wasn't rigorous enough. There are instances of bullying, right
15:28
Speaker 7: of violence, that's physical violence that's taking place in our schools,
15:31
Speaker 7: and there could be a dozen different reasons. Their family
15:35
Speaker 7: looks at where their child is in their current situation
15:39
Speaker 7: and says, we just don't want to do this anymore.
15:41
Speaker 7: We just need to pick something different. It's more suited
15:43
Speaker 7: to our needs and to our family situation. And every
15:46
Speaker 7: family deserves the right to be able to do that
15:48
Speaker 7: calculus and make that decision for themselves, and that's what
15:51
Speaker 7: the Hope Scholarship provides them. It doesn't mean that, you know,
15:56
Speaker 7: I'm agnostic if your public school is amazing, saying it like,
16:00
Speaker 7: if you love your teacher, do that. But I think
16:04
Speaker 7: that family should have the choice to make that decision
16:06
Speaker 7: if they said choose.
16:07
Speaker 3: And I think that sometimes folks that stand up for
16:11
Speaker 3: school choice are kind of labeled with well, your anti
16:15
Speaker 3: public schools, and even some of our legislators, and I've
16:19
Speaker 3: had all of them on the show that that are
16:22
Speaker 3: very very pro school choice. One of the ones in
16:24
Speaker 3: the House of Delegates, I Can I Can, I can
16:27
Speaker 3: tell you has said on the show that she had
16:29
Speaker 3: more than one child and some went to public school
16:32
Speaker 3: and some didn't. I think sometimes you folks maybe are
16:35
Speaker 3: unfairly labeled as being anti public school when in reality
16:40
Speaker 3: you're more at school. School choice is not anti public school.
16:45
Speaker 7: No. I don't think it's anti public school because part
16:47
Speaker 7: of the school choice movement Dave's open enrollment. I want
16:51
Speaker 7: to go to the school that's down the street. Charter
16:53
Speaker 7: schools are public schools. Making not choice is a choice
16:55
Speaker 7: to stay in the public school system. It's just choosing
16:57
Speaker 7: a different building or choosing an online version because that
17:00
Speaker 7: works better for you. And you know we're I'm not
17:04
Speaker 7: against public schools at all. In fact, I worked in
17:07
Speaker 7: public schools for I worked for public school districts in
17:10
Speaker 7: the state of Florida for twenty years, and some of
17:13
Speaker 7: the best people that I know are teachers and administrators
17:16
Speaker 7: who show up every day for their kids and are
17:18
Speaker 7: extremely devoted to the work that they do. There are
17:21
Speaker 7: great schools out there, and there are great public teachers
17:24
Speaker 7: out there, and if that's what a family wants to do,
17:27
Speaker 7: I am absolutely for that. I just feel like, if
17:32
Speaker 7: you're sitting down at the end of the day and
17:34
Speaker 7: you're saying, I look at my son and he's miserable
17:39
Speaker 7: or failing, or needs tutoring or some different option, and
17:43
Speaker 7: it breaks my heart to drop him off in the morning,
17:47
Speaker 7: I should be able to do something different to support
17:50
Speaker 7: what he specifically needs, because I know that.

18:06
Speaker 3: issue that we have seen Tiffany with these school consolidations.
18:11
Speaker 3: I mean, this has been going on in West Virginia
18:13
Speaker 3: for some time, but this is not necessarily limited to
18:15
Speaker 3: West Virginia. This goes on nationwide. And if you look
18:19
Speaker 3: at these statistics, and I haven't obviously this is not
18:21
Speaker 3: what I do for a living, but I have looked
18:24
Speaker 3: at some of the statistics across the country. There are
18:28
Speaker 3: more and more parents that are choosing alternatives.
18:32
Speaker 7: There are and you know, even even big states like
18:35
Speaker 7: California that don't have school choice are going through consolidations
18:39
Speaker 7: right now. And so that should kind of tell you something,
18:42
Speaker 7: right like, parents are making a decision that's creating changes
18:48
Speaker 7: in the number of enrollment even these states that don't
18:51
Speaker 7: have it. Colorado, New Mexico, New York, South Dakota. There
18:55
Speaker 7: are lots of states that are going through this, and
18:59
Speaker 7: I think that school choice is kind of like it's
19:02
Speaker 7: in my op ed. What I'm arguing is school choice
19:05
Speaker 7: is not necessarily the enemy here. School choice is the
19:08
Speaker 7: lifeline to families who are facing consolidation. The only option
19:14
Speaker 7: in a strictly public environment is we're closing your school.
19:18
Speaker 7: Now you have closing school A. Now you must go
19:20
Speaker 7: to school B. In a school choice environment, it's we're
19:24
Speaker 7: closing school A. You can go to school B if
19:27
Speaker 7: you so choose, and that calculus works out for your family,
19:30
Speaker 7: drive time, you know the grade that the school has,
19:35
Speaker 7: the teachers at the schools that works out for you. Great.
19:37
Speaker 7: If that's not a good option, communities, families, teachers can
19:43
Speaker 7: sit down and say, we have other options here. We
19:46
Speaker 7: can start a micro school. We can look at a
19:48
Speaker 7: co op of families that want a homeschool if they
19:51
Speaker 7: just have a way to put different options on the
19:54
Speaker 7: table and find this thing that suits them best.
19:56
Speaker 3: Dog Relativity Hobin from the cardinalst to do does this to
20:00
Speaker 3: be more of an issue in rural America? Or let's
20:05
Speaker 3: just take West Virginia and it's in West Virginia. Is
20:08
Speaker 3: is a rural state, but there are certain areas like Charleston,
20:11
Speaker 3: Hughets in Morgantown that tend to be a little bit
20:13
Speaker 3: more metro. Is this a bigger issue as far as
20:17
Speaker 3: rural schools go, or are we sending it in the
20:19
Speaker 3: metro issues talking about school choice.
20:23
Speaker 7: I think in West Virginia it's it's happening in both right, because,
20:27
Speaker 7: like you just said, you have school closures that are
20:30
Speaker 7: happening Knnock County, but they're also happening in smaller counties
20:33
Speaker 7: that have already were a smaller population with fewer students
20:39
Speaker 7: in the schools, and they're having to consolidate those schools
20:41
Speaker 7: as well. I think it's sort of affecting all kinds here.
20:44
Speaker 3: And we saw in the news and we've got plenty
20:47
Speaker 3: of written about it at WV metronews dot com cheap
20:50
Speaker 3: plug there that I think it was in Randolph County
20:52
Speaker 3: this week that they chose not to consolidate. There were
20:54
Speaker 3: some of the smaller schools that up in that area.
20:56
Speaker 3: And I'm not fully up on the story, but again
20:58
Speaker 3: you can read about it WV metronews dot com that
21:01
Speaker 3: in Randolph County here in West Virginia that they chose
21:04
Speaker 3: to keep the schools open and not consolidate.
21:07
Speaker 7: Yeah, and that's you know, they're they're doing their calculus
21:11
Speaker 7: right on on what is going to work over there.
21:13
Speaker 7: And I'm happy that they're gonna be able to keep
21:15
Speaker 7: the school.
21:15
Speaker 3: So fen talk about the work of the Cardinal Institute,
21:18
Speaker 3: because I've had you and I've had Gary Balaji and
21:20
Speaker 3: other folks from the Cardinal Institute on the show from
21:22
Speaker 3: time to time, talk about the overall mission of the
21:25
Speaker 3: Cardinal Institute. What is it you people do?
21:30
Speaker 7: That's a great question, what is it you people do?
21:32
Speaker 7: So the Cardinal Institute, we're working primarily on what we
21:38
Speaker 7: call the West Virginia Miracle, and we just we want
21:41
Speaker 7: to see a turnaround for West Virginia that puts it
21:45
Speaker 7: in a place where freedom and agency are driving the
21:50
Speaker 7: decisions that we're making here in Florida. And you know,
21:53
Speaker 7: in the education realm, obviously that's my area of expertise.
21:57
Speaker 7: Putting families first and giving people the freedom to build
22:01
Speaker 7: the best possible life that they can here in West
22:04
Speaker 7: Virginia and create prosperity for us.
22:07
Speaker 3: So give us the overall mission of this when it
22:10
Speaker 3: comes to like the op ed that you wrote, Tiffany
22:12
Speaker 3: and the Gazette mail, what is your what is your
22:15
Speaker 3: what's your final your final statement on all this.
22:19
Speaker 7: My final analysis, especially on my op ed, is I'm
22:24
Speaker 7: I'm not arguing that I have a solution for anyone.
22:28
Speaker 7: And that's the point. The public school system is one solution,
22:33
Speaker 7: and it's sort of a one size fits all solution.
22:36
Speaker 7: And the argument that I'm making is to families, you
22:39
Speaker 7: do not have to take this lying down. Consolidations are
22:43
Speaker 7: a reality. It's an unfortunate reality, but that is the
22:47
Speaker 7: world that we're living in, and the whole country is
22:49
Speaker 7: having to face this new reality. In West Virginia, there
22:53
Speaker 7: are other options and exploring those is your right as
22:58
Speaker 7: a family. It's your right as a parent to kind
23:01
Speaker 7: of sit down and do dot calculus. And we're very
23:05
Speaker 7: fortunate to have that here in West Virginia. And the
23:07
Speaker 7: face is something that is very difficult for families and
23:11
Speaker 7: for parents to adjust to. Not easy.
23:14
Speaker 3: And what can people learn more about the work of
23:16
Speaker 3: the Cardinal Institute, Tiffany.

24:17

25:12
Speaker 3: often county or region dependent. So hand waving charter influences
25:16

25:19
Speaker 3: That was a quote like that has not been a

Speaker 3: question everybody wants to how long have they been doing
33:14
Speaker 3: Girl Scout cookies?
33:15
Speaker 12: Oh?
33:16
Speaker 9: My gosh for over one hundred years?
33:17
Speaker 3: Okay, well over one hundred years. And when they started
33:19
Speaker 3: it was just cookie flavored. There was no flavors, was
33:23
Speaker 3: a short bread cookie. We've expanded the Palace and short
33:27
Speaker 3: and short bread was like the simplest cookie there. It
33:29
Speaker 3: is just I mean I like him, don't get I
33:31
Speaker 3: like them all, but just short bread, you know, just cookie,
33:35
Speaker 3: the cookie flavored. And then they kept expanding and expanding
33:37
Speaker 3: and expanding. So the big question people always want to know,
33:39
Speaker 3: is anything new this year?
33:41
Speaker 9: Yeah, so we don't, unfortunately, have a new cookie this year,
33:44
Speaker 9: but it's the nine classics that everybody know and love,
33:47
Speaker 9: all right, and those are Those include the taglongs, thin Mint, Samoas.
33:52
Speaker 9: We have the full lineup that everyone can enjoy, our
33:55
Speaker 9: Adventure fulls as well as the Girl Scout's More and
34:00
Speaker 9: unfortunately be it's last season.
34:01
Speaker 3: I was just looking at my notes on that. So
34:03
Speaker 3: this will be the last of the s'mores.
34:05
Speaker 9: Yes, yeah, we love it. But next year we're excited
34:09
Speaker 9: to introduce a new cookie.
34:10
Speaker 3: Okay, any inside on a little bit.
34:12
Speaker 9: I mean, actually we don't know.
34:14
Speaker 3: We don't know, okaying.
34:15
Speaker 9: The national organizations really kind of keeping that air tight.
34:18
Speaker 9: So hopefully I'll know something to share in a few months.
34:21
Speaker 3: So if somebody wanted to, I mean, they get an
34:24
Speaker 3: idea in their head, I think this would make a
34:26
Speaker 3: great cookie. Flavor. Can they just reach out to the
34:28
Speaker 3: Girl Scouts national organization. Are they taking ideas?
34:32
Speaker 9: I don't know if they're necessarily taking any ideas, but
34:34
Speaker 9: I mean, we do try to keep consumers values and
34:37
Speaker 9: opinions in mine, so I'm sure we're open to that feedback.
34:40
Speaker 3: Talk about I mean, you know, again, I have you
34:42
Speaker 3: on every year and all the other stations you to
34:44
Speaker 3: talk about the sale of Girl Scout cookies. But this thing,
34:48
Speaker 3: it really it's not just about the cookies. Now, for
34:51
Speaker 3: people like me, it's about the cookies, but it's more
34:54
Speaker 3: than just that, because it teaches these young ladies entrepreneurialship
34:58
Speaker 3: to a certain extent, to teach some hard work. Talk
35:01
Speaker 3: about that aspect of it.
35:02
Speaker 9: Yeah, So you know, at Girl Scouts, we honestly think
35:05
Speaker 9: the Girl Scout Cookie program is one of the most
35:07
Speaker 9: beneficial things a girl can participate in in her youth.
35:11
Speaker 9: It's a way for girls to gain valuable entrepreneurial skills
35:14
Speaker 9: that will set them up for success their entire lives.
35:17
Speaker 9: You know, when you're supporting a Girl Scout and the
35:19
Speaker 9: Girl Scout Cookie program, you're actually supporting a young entrepreneur.
35:24
Speaker 9: The programs used to teach girls five valuable skills they
35:28
Speaker 9: can carry throughout their entire lives. That includes money management,
35:32
Speaker 9: people's skills, business ethics, I mean, and the funds that
35:37
Speaker 9: you know, we gather from the Girl Scout cookie sale.
35:39
Speaker 9: They all stay local to help girls really unlock amazing things.
35:43
Speaker 9: We've had girls travel the world create community service projects
35:47
Speaker 9: that have made an impact. I mean, the possibilities are
35:50
Speaker 9: truly endless. So you know, while the cookies are delicious,
35:54
Speaker 9: what they help us unlock is just truly amazing.
35:58
Speaker 3: So the big question I'm sure that everybody ask you
36:01
Speaker 3: is what's your favorite? Oh my gosh, I can't pick one.
36:04
Speaker 3: I mean, I think I'm a little biased because I
36:07
Speaker 3: work there, so I love all of them. I definitely
36:10
Speaker 3: if there was one that I'd have to pick, it
36:11
Speaker 3: would be a Taglong. Okay, the Taglongs. I like them.
36:14
Speaker 3: I like the Samoas and like the docy does. But
36:17
Speaker 3: you can't like the Smores after this year, right, smores
36:20
Speaker 3: are gone.
36:20
Speaker 9: You can like them, you just won't be able to
36:22
Speaker 9: have them. You've got to stock up and really get.
36:26
Speaker 11: This year right.
36:26
Speaker 3: This is this is the last year. Now you know
36:29
Speaker 3: what I just did, Joe, I just created a run
36:31
Speaker 3: on smorts cookies. So I guess I wonder if you can,
36:34
Speaker 3: if you can freeze them or something.
36:36
Speaker 9: Or all of our cookies are great in the freezer.
36:39
Speaker 3: I know a lot of people, especially with the Mints,
36:41
Speaker 3: that do that that put them in the freezer. Yeh,
36:43
Speaker 3: So I suppose you can do that well. And again
36:45
Speaker 3: one of the things we have a little fun we
36:47
Speaker 3: talk about Girl Scout cookies. But again, one of the
36:50
Speaker 3: things I love about this is it does teach these
36:52
Speaker 3: young ladies these skills. And I would imagine that the
36:57
Speaker 3: Girl Scouts of today, just like everything else, Joel, it evolves.
37:01
Speaker 3: So while the basic core idea of the Girl Scouts
37:05
Speaker 3: is probably not changed, the different activities that they do
37:08
Speaker 3: change when they're out doing community service projects or they're
37:11
Speaker 3: doing fun kind of stuff. Talk about some of those changes.
37:14
Speaker 12: Yeah.
37:14
Speaker 9: So, like you said, I mean, our organization really focuses
37:17
Speaker 9: on tradition. So those core aspects that we had over
37:21
Speaker 9: one hundred years ago, I mean, they're still with us.
37:23
Speaker 9: But at Girl Scouts we also really try to keep
37:25
Speaker 9: our finger on the pulse of what girls are experiencing. So,
37:28
Speaker 9: you know, after the pandemic, some of our programming really
37:31
Speaker 9: took a focus on mental health. When Girl Scouts are
37:34
Speaker 9: now doing community service projects, we're seeing their focusing on
37:37
Speaker 9: mental health and how they can help boost mental wellness
37:40
Speaker 9: in their communities. Of course, we also have girls participating
37:44
Speaker 9: in amazing things such as, you know, helping out their
37:47
Speaker 9: local animal shelter or giving back to local veterans. So,
37:51
Speaker 9: I mean, I think that's one of my favorite parts
37:53
Speaker 9: about Girl Scouts is it's truly girl led. We do provide,
37:57
Speaker 9: you know, the programming, but when it comes to community
37:59
Speaker 9: service and sort of the activities that they you know,
38:02
Speaker 9: have agency and to participate in, they decide that.
38:05
Speaker 3: So talking again with Joel Gates from the Girls Scouts,
38:09
Speaker 3: Girl Scout Cookie Season is here, I want to talk
38:11
Speaker 3: about when you hear that term the Girl Scouts of
38:13
Speaker 3: the Black Diamond Council. Yes, now you all serve more
38:16
Speaker 3: I think than more than like five thousand or so
38:19
Speaker 3: girls in sixty one counties in West Virginia, Virginia Highway, Maryland.
38:22
Speaker 3: Talk about that to the council, I mean, what exactly
38:26
Speaker 3: is that?
38:27
Speaker 9: Yeah, so, you know, I always compare it to the government,
38:30
Speaker 9: but just how our national government has Congress and then
38:33
Speaker 9: the legislatures I mean, we have our national organization that
38:37
Speaker 9: kind of guides us nationally all but then we are
38:41
Speaker 9: individual councils. They're kind of broken up all across the
38:44
Speaker 9: country to help make sure that regions really serve the
38:48
Speaker 9: Girl Scouts in those areas. So Girl Scouts of Black
38:51
Speaker 9: Diamond Council, like you said, sixty one counties across four states,
38:55
Speaker 9: we cover pretty much the majority of West Virginia. And yeah,
39:00
Speaker 9: I mean it's just a great way for us to
39:02
Speaker 9: stay connected with girls in our communities and make sure
39:04
Speaker 9: that we're serving them as best as possible.
39:06
Speaker 3: And how can people get Girl Scout cookies?
39:09
Speaker 9: Yeah, so the best way is to obviously contact a
39:11
Speaker 9: Girl Scout that you already know and love. But if
39:13
Speaker 9: you're someone that may not know someone and you're still
39:16
Speaker 9: looking to participate in the sale, definitely follow us on
39:19
Speaker 9: the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council Facebook page. There
39:22
Speaker 9: we share information of how you can order online text
39:26
Speaker 9: to get a direct link, but then also contact the
39:28
Speaker 9: council and we'll get you set up.
39:30
Speaker 3: You've entered into the modern age here with this thing.
39:33
Speaker 3: You're texting to get girls Scott kick.
39:34
Speaker 9: Yes, absolutely, we're everywhere.
39:36
Speaker 3: Now do they still do the door to door thing anymore.
39:38
Speaker 3: I'm thinking that they do.
39:39
Speaker 2: They still do that.
39:40
Speaker 9: I mean, our sale is super expansive. Like I said,
39:43
Speaker 9: we really try to hold onto edition and also offer
39:47
Speaker 9: that digital piece. Last year we had online sales. Of course,
39:50
Speaker 9: safety is a huge priority for us, so we always
39:52
Speaker 9: stress that a girl needs to have a trusted adult
39:55
Speaker 9: with them. But yeah, I mean right now, especially with
39:58
Speaker 9: the snow and a lot of our girls Scouts are
40:00
Speaker 9: unfortunately snowed, and we're really kind of pushing those digital sales.
40:04
Speaker 9: But you know, at the end of February, booth sales
40:07
Speaker 9: will start happening. Cookies will be in your communities at
40:10
Speaker 9: local retailers, and so, like I said, we really just
40:14
Speaker 9: try to be everywhere.
40:16
Speaker 3: And I know that where I live in Tay's Valley
40:18
Speaker 3: that frequently, not with the weather like it is now,
40:20
Speaker 3: but when it warms up a little bit, frequently you'll
40:22
Speaker 3: see the folks have set up at like local banks
40:25
Speaker 3: on Saturdays and they're selling multiple amounts of them. Yeah
40:29
Speaker 3: as well.
40:29
Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, but like I said, those will start at
40:31
Speaker 9: the end of February and there's typically run until we're
40:34
Speaker 9: out of cookies, so April or Matt, Well, I.
40:36
Speaker 3: Can tell you here at the radio ranch, we do
40:38
Speaker 3: our part. Heck, y'all, we love this Before Joelle, I
40:42
Speaker 3: appreciate you being here again. You can follow them along
40:44
Speaker 3: on Facebook. Give us all the information again, if people
40:47
Speaker 3: don't have a Girl Scout in their in their life,
40:52
Speaker 3: how can they reach out and make sure that they
40:54
Speaker 3: can get some Girl Scout cookies? Give us that again.
40:56
Speaker 9: Well, first of all, I want to say that if
40:57
Speaker 9: you are someone that doesn't have a Girl Scout in
40:59
Speaker 9: your life, we're always accepting new members, So definitely get
41:01
Speaker 9: the girls in your life involved. It's a great program.
41:04
Speaker 9: But also follow us on the Girl Scouts of Black
41:06
Speaker 9: Diamond Council Facebook page. Well, I will have information on
41:09
Speaker 9: how you can join as well as how you can purchase.
41:12
Speaker 3: All right, Joelle, always a pleasure to have you on
41:16
Speaker 3: the show and coming here in you Now, how long
41:18
Speaker 3: does the season last? The girls?
41:19
Speaker 9: So, like I said, so it kicked off yesterday and
41:21
Speaker 9: well it all happen until we run out of.
41:22
Speaker 3: Countil you run out. Okay, all right, Well, if you
41:24
Speaker 3: need back on again, just so feel free to let
41:26
Speaker 3: me know. Okay, absolutely sounds great. Joel Gates again from

44:05
Speaker 3: night Ben Solango named as the new president of the
44:08
Speaker 3: Putnam County Commission. He'll be on the show on Monday.
44:11
Speaker 3: Natalie Tennant took her seat as the first female commissioner
44:14
Speaker 3: in the history of Canawa County. We'll talk about that,
44:16
Speaker 3: working to get her on the show one day next
44:19
Speaker 3: week as well. Also, I did want to mention that
44:23
Speaker 3: we have a new city councilman in Charleston, Harper. Gardner
44:26
Speaker 3: was named to the position that was left available when
44:28
Speaker 3: Sam Minardi reside Talctor Harper earlier this morning. He's going
44:32
Speaker 3: to be on the show one day next week. New County.
44:34
Speaker 3: I'm sorry, a new city councilman here in Charleston. Also,
44:39
Speaker 3: there has been an opening on the Putnam County Commission
44:42
Speaker 3: that since the resignation of Steve DeWeese, and so what
44:46
Speaker 3: happened last night. I'm told that the Putnam County Executive Committee,
44:49
Speaker 3: the Republican Executive Committee got together and they chose three
44:53
Speaker 3: names that now go to the city and county commissioners
44:55
Speaker 3: in Putnam County, Brian Ellis and Andy Skidmore. Those names
44:59
Speaker 3: are Mark Drennan that you'll recognize his name, former Legislator,
45:03
Speaker 3: Doug Pearson, and Ron Stone. So those three names Drennan, Pearson,
45:08
Speaker 3: and Stone will now go to the sitting commissioners, Andy
45:11
Speaker 3: Skidmore and also Brian Ellie. To see who is going
45:15
Speaker 3: to be the new county commissioner in Putnam County, tex
45:20
Speaker 3: said Rick Johnson. Wow, I guess that's good. I don't know.
45:26
Speaker 3: That's a reference to Rick Johnson, former radio host here,
45:29
Speaker 3: who is going to be taking over as the host
45:32
Speaker 3: on Inside West Virginia Politics, taking over from Mark Curtis,
45:35
Speaker 3: who who is often the retirement somewhere. Text say, can
45:39
Speaker 3: you say girl Scouts?
45:40
Speaker 2: Now?
45:41
Speaker 3: Of course you can. We just did. Texas Cardinal Institute
45:45
Speaker 3: has ran by and aligned with wealthy people trying to
45:48
Speaker 3: funnel tax money to themselves so they can get wealthier.
45:51
Speaker 3: It's anti ethical for the community and it's aggravating. They're
45:54
Speaker 3: given a platform to pee on our leg and telling
45:56
Speaker 3: tell us it's raining. Well, if you know any thing
46:00
Speaker 3: about the show, you know I and they used platform
46:02
Speaker 3: as a verb. Now, Rob, I platform everybody. I don't
46:05
Speaker 3: say no to anybody. What's on this show this I'm
46:07
Speaker 3: the Galvit has on Derek Evans, I'm the Galvin has
46:10
Speaker 3: on Mike Pushkin. I'm the Galvin has of anybody. I'm
46:14
Speaker 3: a free speech guy, Rob Real, I'm all about free speech.
46:17
Speaker 10: See, I play the game the opposite way when you
46:21
Speaker 10: get up real early on ninety six to one k wus.
46:23
Speaker 10: We are a no politics, no religion zone because we're
46:27
Speaker 10: we're just about making you have fun and being a
46:30
Speaker 10: better mood.
46:30
Speaker 3: Three minutes a future in the radio on.
46:32
Speaker 10: As and either way is a perfectly valid way to
46:36
Speaker 10: do it. When when folks want to get into that
46:37
Speaker 10: sort of stuff, I send them right over here.
46:40
Speaker 3: Thank you. So you're all decked out in the Irish
46:44
Speaker 3: stuff here, man.
46:45
Speaker 10: So I'm wearing my number three Notre Dame Jersey today
46:48
Speaker 10: because that's the hours of sleep I got last night
46:51
Speaker 10: after the three point win over Penn State at the
46:56
Speaker 10: Orange Bowl in the CFP semifinal. One of the funny
47:00
Speaker 10: things of getting down so I was. I am two
47:03
Speaker 10: floors up, as are you a desk in the building,
47:06
Speaker 10: And I was at my desk when I get the
47:08
Speaker 10: little text from you, Hey, you're up now. Aside from
47:11
Speaker 10: the fact that I'm wearing a football jersey, I go
47:14
Speaker 10: just under six two and two twenty two twenty one.
47:17
Speaker 10: Whatever it takes so I have. I have the build
47:19
Speaker 10: of a linebacker. So do then see me running through
47:23
Speaker 10: our labyrinth here at eleven eleven Virginia Street East. I
47:28
Speaker 10: think Steve Bishop thought I was going to take him
47:30
Speaker 10: out there for a second.
47:31
Speaker 3: Well, and at his age. When you break a hip
47:33
Speaker 3: on Bishop man hit.
47:35
Speaker 2: Him in the knees.
47:36
Speaker 3: He's gotting bad knees. Let me do it this real
47:38
Speaker 3: quick with Dave Alden showing five. Any Live is broad

47:53
Speaker 3: Somebody said Solango now the president of the Putnam County Commission.
47:56
Speaker 3: I said, yes, see. No, he's not. He's the If
47:59
Speaker 3: I said he was Puttnam Camp, I meant to say Kanah.
48:00
Speaker 3: He's a new president. He did not switch counties. Benny
48:03
Speaker 3: boy Is now the is the president of the Kanah
48:06
Speaker 3: County Commission, not the Putnam County.
48:08
Speaker 10: There was a lot in there, Putnam County, Kanah County
48:10
Speaker 10: City Council. It would have been easy for you or
48:13
Speaker 10: maybe someone listening to maybe mix up.
48:15
Speaker 3: Or maybe I'm just stupid. I don't think those things
48:18
Speaker 3: are mutually exclusive. All right, let's let's talk about sock drop.
48:23
Speaker 10: So somebody in the text used the judge Judy reference
48:26
Speaker 10: of you know, on my leg and tell me it's raining.
48:29
Speaker 10: That'll just make your socks wet, as far as I'm concerned.
48:32
Speaker 10: So if you go out in this winter weather advisory today,
48:34
Speaker 10: we've already been dealing with this for five, six days,
48:37
Speaker 10: eight years, the longest this week has been the longest
48:40
Speaker 10: winner of my life. So you know, if my feet
48:44
Speaker 10: get wet, it's over for me. I'm cranky, and I'm
48:46
Speaker 10: just in a bad mood the rest of the day.
48:48
Speaker 10: And I live and work two blocks apart from one
48:51
Speaker 10: another in warm, safe, comfortable places, so I didn't even
48:55
Speaker 10: want to think about what it's like to not have
48:58
Speaker 10: a place to go, to be on the street. I
49:00
Speaker 10: know that the most requested item at shelters and service
49:03
Speaker 10: providers is socks for that very reason. So coming up
49:08
Speaker 10: on Thursday, January twenty third, so two weeks from yesterday,
49:11
Speaker 10: we are going to have our second annual WVRC Media
49:14
Speaker 10: Drop your Socks drive through Sock Drop from seven in
49:18
Speaker 10: the morning until six in the evening. Bring us a pair,
49:21
Speaker 10: or better yet, a package, or better than that, multiple
49:24
Speaker 10: packages of brand new socks.
49:27
Speaker 3: Union Mission is going to take them.
49:28
Speaker 10: Make sure they get in the hands or well rather
49:30
Speaker 10: on the feet of our friends and neighbors in need
49:33
Speaker 10: to keep warm this winter. Cash and check donations will
49:36
Speaker 10: be warmly accepted for a right by Union Mission as well.
49:40
Speaker 10: Thank you to Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration for helping to
49:42
Speaker 10: make this whole thing happen. If you have been through
49:44
Speaker 10: our parking lot at eleven eleven Virginia Street East, you
49:47
Speaker 10: know we've got a nice little loop. You don't have
49:49
Speaker 10: to get out of your vehicle. You roll up, you
49:51
Speaker 10: roll your winded down roll, push the button so your
49:54
Speaker 10: window goes down. You're old you're old showing my age,
49:58
Speaker 10: and we will gladly take that donation from you, and
50:01
Speaker 10: you can move right along. You're safe and warm and
50:03
Speaker 10: comfortable in your vehicle, and you've helped your friends and neighbors.
50:06
Speaker 3: This way, and you can go out. And again, I
50:08
Speaker 3: was kidding about this earlier. Please no use socks. Okay,
50:11
Speaker 3: we'd like to have new ways, Yes, yes we would.
50:14
Speaker 10: And I get that there are folks who have maybe
50:16
Speaker 10: meticulously cleaned and bleached and done all of the things
50:19
Speaker 10: that's the health Department things that's not an US thing.
50:22
Speaker 3: They have to be new. And socks are cheap relatively,
50:25
Speaker 3: like you said, you can get big packs of socks. Yes,
50:28
Speaker 3: very very cheap.
50:28
Speaker 10: So I spend some time throughout the course of the year,
50:31
Speaker 10: you know, hawking the sales and places that do things inexpensively.
50:35
Speaker 10: And I have I have amassed the first donation of
50:39
Speaker 10: ninety six pairs of socks, and I think I have
50:43
Speaker 10: spent barely more than one hundred dollars.
50:45
Speaker 3: Is that intentional that you did ninety six? Yes, okay,
50:48
Speaker 3: I was gonna say you could do ninety six point
50:50
Speaker 3: one and you can just have one sock. It just
50:52
Speaker 3: that that loose thread. Yeah, just being it. So yeah,
50:55
Speaker 3: so we are. We are already staked with you have
50:58
Speaker 3: made an early donation? Well so we are. Can I
51:01
Speaker 3: tell you the story of how I made an early
51:02
Speaker 3: donation because my sister in law, who I love dearly,
51:06
Speaker 3: who lives in North Carolina, for some reason, thought I
51:09
Speaker 3: was a Carolina Panthers fan. Because you know, with me,
51:12
Speaker 3: you have to guess what football team does that guy like?
51:14
Speaker 3: Considering everything I have as a star on it, My
51:17
Speaker 3: lovely sister in law, Jackie, who lives in Mount Airy,
51:20
Speaker 3: North Carolina, sent me through the mail Carolina Panthers socks.
51:24
Speaker 3: Guess what Rob got on his desk when he came
51:26
Speaker 3: back from his vacation a couple of weeks ago. Carolina
51:29
Speaker 3: Panthers socks. Hold the package January twenty third. That is
51:32
Speaker 3: the day, yes, sir, two weeks from yesterday.
51:35
Speaker 10: So that gives you two weekends maybe to do some
51:37
Speaker 10: shopping and just an extra pack of socks cost you
51:41
Speaker 10: ten bucks. If you can do more than that, terrific.
51:43
Speaker 10: All right, Rob, we'll talk to you again about next week.
51:45
Speaker 10: I appreciate you, man, Thanks a lot. All right, TJ,
