- 0:28The Orioles were managed by Paul Richards in his seventh year as skipper for the O's.
- 0:32His first five seasons were mediocre at best, but 1960 showed promise as the Orioles won 89 games
- 0:38and finished in second place for the first time since 1944, when they were still known as the St. Louis Browns.
- 0:44This audio recording is from the Angels Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Kelly, Steve Bailey, and Don Wells.

- 1:221961 is the baseball battle cry in Baltimore.
- 1:28It has been done in 1961 as the proud statement of sports fans in Los Angeles.
- 1:33On this historic date of April 11th of the year 1961, the City of the Angels had strength to its claim as the fourth capital of the world.
- 1:45Baseball players whose uniforms are lettered to Los Angeles play their first championship game of the American League.
- 1:53Good morning everybody, this is Bob Kelly, along with Don Wells and Steve Bailey.
- 1:59We'll radio broadcast all and telecast many of the Los Angeles Angels American League games.
- 2:06Today the Angels open the 1961 season here in Baltimore's municipal stadium against the Baltimore Orioles.
- 2:14The Orioles today have the old hometown decked out in all manner of bumping and banners,
- 2:19exporting last year's second-place birds to themselves one better this season.
- 2:25Fan response here in Baltimore is somewhat reminiscent of the fan support for football Baltimore Cokes receive at this very same stadium.
- 2:34And I'm sure that you Ram fans who have watched Ram Cokes games here on television are well familiar with what some of us have called
- 2:43the world's only outdoor insane asylum.
- 2:46This town is really for the birds.
- 2:49Thousands of bumper stickers printed in English, Polish, Italian, Hebrew, and Russian have been reminding the populace for weeks that it can be done in 61.
- 3:00A downtown tattoo artist reported making a more prominent record of the slogan, On a Man's Chest.
- 3:08If the Orioles fail to do it in 61, it will go down as a permanent typographical error.
- 3:16The managers Bill Regney of the Angels and Paul Richards of the Orioles are meeting with the umpires at home plate.
- 3:23The umpires will be seated behind the plate, learning at the first day, right at second and fourth at third.
- 3:32And now the lineup for the batting orders for this afternoon's ballgame.
- 3:38For the Los Angeles Angels, Kenny Yost at third base leads off.
- 3:43Yost who batted 260 last season.
- 3:46Then Ash Babadi at second base.
- 3:49He was Cleveland's regular second base for the last season and batted 288 for the top.
- 3:54Albie Pierce in right field.
- 3:57His last year's batting average 244.
- 4:00Ted Kuzuchi drafted from the Chicago White Bucks where he hit 293 last year.
- 4:06Big Blue playing first base and batting cleanup for the Angels.
- 4:11Bob Serves of the New York Yankees where he batted 253 last season.
- 4:17Will be at left field and bat fifth.
- 4:20That is somewhat of an ideation from the Angels batting order during the spring exhibition games
- 4:25where they serve in every game that he played and he batted most of them in the number three spot.
- 4:30That's this today.
- 4:32Ken Hook just from the New York Yankees in center field.
- 4:37Followed by 50 Braquel.
- 4:41When the Angels acquired their class we can acclaim that Will the Yankees,
- 4:45reporting them 60-2 far, 4 Braquel, will be at shortstop.
- 4:50Staying here and playing today despite the fact that just two nights ago
- 4:55is Father Fritz Braquel Sr., a former big league ball player,
- 4:59five-seventy of a heart attack.
- 5:01Del Wright, captain, and the letter in major league of about eight.
- 5:05And the starting pitcher, the ex-New York Yankee Eli Agriba, a right-hander.
- 5:10The Baltimore Jocke Brown in center field results, he hit 254 last season.
- 5:16And he's being followed by Rob Snyder in right field.
- 5:20Snyder who hit 260 for Kansas City.
- 5:23Brooks Robinson, who had the classiest fielding in third baseman of the game today.
- 5:29At third, Nigel O'Reilly, who's taking the field.
- 5:35After that comes Kim Dunheva first, Gus D'Angelo, captain, Dean Stevens in left field.
- 5:41Ron Hanson, shortstop.
- 5:42Bob Brady, second baseman, right-hander, took part of the 15-game winner last season.
- 5:47Will be Baltimore's starting pitcher.
- 5:50We're again welcome to the opening game of Angels Baseball.

- 7:01Without provision for issue Los Angeles Angels Baseball Heavens.
- 7:05Now ladies and gentlemen, it is my great pleasure indeed to bring in my broadcast and family.
- 7:10On all the Angel broadcasts and telecasts this year,
- 7:13a fellow who returns to his native California after distinguishing himself as a broadcaster,
- 7:19he's our boy son from our state season.
- 7:22Don Wells and Don on behalf of all of us, a lot of good luck to you.
- 7:26Well the same to you Cal and to Steve, and let's get things underway in a successful way today
- 7:31here at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore as Eddie Eurosteps in against the Baltimore right-hander, Mel Pappas.
- 7:37The weather picture today, it's a partly cloudy day, we have a terrific wind blowing in from the left-field corner,
- 7:42the line up, the first pitch of the season and it's a strike right down the middle.
- 7:47Holes out by Pappas with that fastball, the knees stand here as rabid as they are, they were rad with every pitch today.
- 7:53This place is slowly but surely filling up.
- 7:55Here's the line up and the motion, the curveball, left a bit too high to make it run ball and run strike.
- 8:00The on-deck man, Ken Ascobatti, then the right fielder, Albie Person,
- 8:03flying just here in the first inning.
- 8:06Seating capacity of 50,000 here, they shoot between 30 and 40 today.
- 8:10It's going at a high, flat, or shallow left-hander field going out forward,
- 8:13Ronnie Hanson under it now, the short stop there, makes the catch.
- 8:16Out of that 25 or 30 feet on the edge of the outfield grass, so Eurosteps pops up.
- 8:22And that is the first out.
- 8:25Here is second baseman, Ken Ascobatti.
- 8:28Brooks Robinson at third, Ronnie Hanson at short, mile-breeding at second,
- 8:31Big Jim Jenteel is at first.
- 8:33The outfield, Stephens on left, Jackie Brandon center and Snyder is in right.
- 8:38Gus Briando's back of the plate,
- 8:40Mel Pappas ready now to concentrate on Ken Ascobatti, one out, one on.
- 8:44They pitch, check swing, fast and style, to the right side of the plate, strike one.
- 8:48The outfielders, take Stephens out of left field, or Jackie Brandon center.
- 8:52They won't have to play too deep out here with that strong wind.
- 8:55I imagine it's blowing from the left field corner toward right.
- 8:58During batting practice, the big guys like Bob Serve and Gus Briando
- 9:03have had a lot of fly balls out there, didn't go anywhere.
- 9:06There's a swing and a foul, flurring going up into the upper deck.
- 9:09This ballpark, except for some seats that are located right under the upper deck,
- 9:13everything is totally unprotected here, no roof on the stadium.
- 9:16It is a horseshoe stadium and it's 309 feet down the left field line and the left field line,
- 9:21but it is man up everywhere else, 410 feet to start away center field.
- 9:26It's a good time for pitchers if you can keep them from pulling the ball
- 9:29and the curveball low down in the dirt to make it one ball and two strikes.
- 9:36It's all in his opening day in Baltimore.
- 9:39The Angels batting here against Mel Pappas.
- 9:44Mel is taking a little extra time.
- 9:46The temperature reading is in the 50s today, but Mel is trying to rain.
- 9:49And the fastball is caught on.
- 9:50Here's another foul lifted off back of the plate.
- 9:52The wind blows this one back up on the screen.
- 9:55Gus Briando's massed off spun around, took a look at it,
- 9:58and it's still one ball and two strikes.
- 10:00Stevens the plate umpire, lying at the first, John Wright the second,
- 10:03and Schwartz is the umpire at third.
- 10:07The mayor of Baltimore, Mayor Grady, is on a Caribbean cruise,
- 10:10so he was not present for the opening day ceremonies today.
- 10:13And the first ball was thrown out by Philip Goodman,
- 10:16the president of the City Council and acting mayor,
- 10:18and that ball then was in turn turned over to Gene Autry.
- 10:22That's a very precious momento of the 61 American Lakes season.
- 10:27And a swing and a foul at the end of the fast-albie person here on the right side,
- 10:31who was in the on-back circle, and it's still one ball and two strikes.
- 10:35The Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees, their game underway of New York.
- 10:38Pete Ramus on the bat for Minnesota.
- 10:40Whitey Ford, left-hander for New York.
- 10:42Cleveland and Detroit, no score at the end of one.
- 10:45Jim Perry pitching for the Indians.
- 10:47Jim Bunning for Detroit.
- 10:49Kansas City and Boston underway at Fenway Park.
- 10:51Ray Herbert for Kansas City.
- 10:53Bill Maumouquette pitching for the Boston Red Sox.
- 10:55Here's the two-stack delivery coming in now, and he could have been a little bit higher.
- 11:00Quick curve, and it's ball two and strike two.
- 11:05So to that, two are out here in the executive box.
- 11:07Lee McPhail of the Orioles, their general manager.
- 11:10Here's the two-stack delivery coming in now, and strike three.
- 11:13Bill Pappas, third of a pitch right at the letter, that Aspermatti has called out on strikes.
- 11:21Now the right fielder, little guy, played in this ballpark on many occasions.
- 11:25Albie Pearson, played with Lee McPhail to our right as the manager of the Chicago White Sox, Al Lopez.
- 11:33We all went over to see the White Sox opener, the presidential opener, with the new Washington Senators yesterday,
- 11:40and that produced a lot of excitement, a good ballgame.
- 11:43Here's the lineup and the pitch on the way to Albie.
- 11:46Not too high for him for ball one.
- 11:48Brooks Robinson moves in a couple of steps at third.
- 11:51Guard against that front.
- 11:52Stevens plays the very shallow left field straight away.
- 11:55Jackie Brandt off to the right center, and not too deep.
- 11:59Russ Madder, however, is set deep and near the foul line in right field.
- 12:03Here's the one-nothing pitch now, down too low, just below the knees, inside for ball two, and it's two balls and no strikes.
- 12:11Pappas usually is the pappa pitcher who doesn't get underway very strong in the spring, but then he really comes on,
- 12:19as he did last year in winning 15 games.
- 12:21Two-nothing pitch, down too low time, ball three, and it's three-and-nothing.
- 12:28Three-nothing count on Albie.
- 12:30Triama stepping out in front of the plate.
- 12:33Offering the ball and some conversation to his right-hander, Milt Pappas.
- 12:39Here's the lineup and the next one, way inside to him in low ball four.
- 12:44So Person gets on, our first baserunner of the American League season.
- 12:48Little Albie on it first, and here's Red Pazewski coming up.
- 12:53The audience is a coach at first, and Red Paz, coaching at third.
- 12:58The Angels starting here, and you're listening to the Falstaff baseball broadcast.
- 13:03And how about it, fans? Wouldn't a tall frosty glass go great right now?
- 13:06Certainly would. Refresh yourself with right-hearted Falstaff.
- 13:10Big clothes stand-in on this chilly day. He has that heavy sweatshirt on.
- 13:15No muscles bearing here this afternoon.
- 13:18Pappas steps down off the pitching rubber as Albie Person has moved out to his lead.
- 13:23Out to another one now, and they touch on the way to close.
- 13:26That's ball down low for ball one.
- 13:28So Pappas now off the target, walking Person on forward delivers.
- 13:34And he's just had his fifth touch out of the strike zone, firing one low to Tess Wazewski.
- 13:41The outfield back and straighted well around to the right.
- 13:43It's swaying in a high foul five. The wind blows this foot out of play down the right field line,
- 13:48and it travels deep up into the upper deck.
- 13:52One ball to one strike.
- 13:57The Orioles are unveiling some 2,600 new field box seats.
- 14:02This installation also includes the construction of new dugouts here at a cost of about $175,000.
- 14:09And what it does, it cuts down the foul territory area quite a bit on the third base side, first base side, and behind the plate.
- 14:16Here's a quick throw to the first base to Jen Peel, and Albie goes diving back to the bag in time.
- 14:22Second base been marred breathing midway between first and second, right back on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 14:27Rodney Hanson near the bag at second.
- 14:29And the motion, the pitch, pass ball lower and close. Good start back free on this.
- 14:33Let's just throw up the line at the first. And the count is ball two and strike one.
- 14:41Beautifully landscaped area out in center field near the giant scoreboard there, which is off toward right center.
- 14:49Ballpark is located in a residential area.
- 14:52Here's the stretch again, and the pitch to close is swaying along.
- 14:56And the count stays there out there, and here's good start, baseball, Pazuki, good start.
- 15:06So just Pazuki just got that off-field pattern here at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 15:11And the Angels lead 2-0.
- 15:13Here's Pazuki stepping around the bag at third, coming on down the line, in the score.
- 15:19And the Angels are out at about 2-0, 309 feet down the line.
- 15:24And that ball was a win, turning it toward the foul pole.
- 15:27They fair by about 10 or 15 feet and went about 25 rows deep into the open bleacher area out in right field.
- 15:35So the Angels jumped out to 2-0 lead.
- 15:38Here's left fielder, Bob Serb, big right-handed hitter, and the pitch on the way.
- 15:42Pass ball right at the base, strike call.
- 15:44So Pazuki just went out of here, and the Angels lead 2-0.
- 15:50Abby Person came in the score with a base on balls with 2 outs.
- 15:54Next up, Swindler on a tremendous high-fly ball, deep out in right center, turning his back on a jackie plant.
- 15:59You can kiss it goodbye.
- 16:01Full run by Bob Serb.
- 16:03Here we go.
- 16:06Woo-hoo.
- 16:07Oh, that's a win.
- 16:09395 feet away, and he's on the full run all the way around the bases and jacking in.
- 16:14And the Angels are out in front, clean up again.
- 16:16They're really shaking up happens.
- 16:19And this is full-stading now.
- 16:23A back-to-back home run.
- 16:25And this is Serb.
- 16:27And the Angels lead 3-0.
- 16:29Here's the center fielder, Kenna, still with 2 outs.
- 16:39What a tremendous beginning here in the first inning.
- 16:41The Angels out in front, 3-0.
- 16:43And the curve ball broke down too low during the ball run.
- 16:47And the right-handed batting center fielder, 300, almost 400 feet away on that tremendous drive by Bob Serb.
- 16:55The most you'd have to touch, slider right there at the knee, strike.
- 16:59They make a done ball in one strike.
- 17:05So Wildness on the part of Pampas is constant.
- 17:09Here's the next one over a in-to-tight at the knee, about 2 and it's 2 and 1.
- 17:15And he is getting behind here and is coming to Ken Hunt.
- 17:21He got Yost on a pop-up, got asked for money, had him call out on strikes.
- 17:26But then he walked Albie Pursin, that opened the floodgates.
- 17:28And the pitch outside, ball free and it's 3 and a 1.
- 17:32We're shaking up the Baltimore bullpen.
- 17:34They have a right-handed throwing out there, way beyond the 300-mattie foot mark, past the wire fence that borders the outfield.
- 17:42That is about a 7 or 8-foot wire fence.
- 17:46Here's the 3-1 pitch coming in now and it's outside to ball four, so Hunt gets on.
- 17:54That is the fellow pulling out there on the bullpen is John Pampas.
- 18:00Batting with the color position, he is the right-hander, they jump down.
- 18:06That's 15, 20, look at all.
- 18:13The fellow stands 5'11", weighs 190 pounds, so he is throwing in the bullpen.
- 18:17Here's 50 Burkel stepping in, the stretch and the pitch on the way, stuck called.
- 18:21That's that corner, nothing can run.
- 18:29Pampas' contract has been purchased outright from the Little Rock Club of the Southern Association, effective immediately.
- 18:35That makes him eligible to participate in today's game.
- 18:38Here's the stretch, the pitch, in too close to Britts.
- 18:41Little right-handed batter and the counter-stunned ball and one strike.
- 18:50Three runs to red, Abby Towson-Watt, Ted Flazowski with a tremendous homerun into the bleachers out in right field.
- 18:56And then Bob Soot, top run over the wire fence, 400 feet away.
- 18:59Stretch, throw over to first instead.
- 19:02And then Jason Kenhug, safely back to the bag.
- 19:05Don Ross with Bob Kelly and Steve Bailey at the Mario Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland.
- 19:10Here's the motion and the pitch.
- 19:12Down two more to him.
- 19:14To make it about two, two and one.
- 19:16Now guest three on, this is Carl Kahn.
- 19:19And wants to go out and see more Pampas.
- 19:22Our next Angel broadcast, we'll have a night game tomorrow.
- 19:26Warm-up time will be at 4.40 p.m.
- 19:29Game on KMPC and the Angel Radio Network and on KHJ-TV Channel 9.
- 19:35The Angels 3-0 here on the first inning.
- 19:38Mount Conference at an end.
- 19:39Gus Priandos back at the plate.
- 19:41Riquel waits now.
- 19:42Here's the lead taken by Kenhug at first.
- 19:43Two out on the pitch, swing on foul to enter the upper deck.
- 19:48Added two balls and two strikes.
- 19:49Beyond that, Matt is Gail Rice.
- 19:51The Minnesota Twins failed in the first inning at New York.
- 19:54The Yankees are now at bat against Ramos.
- 19:57Bunning is out of the Cleveland-Detroit game.
- 19:59So the Indians cooking up something now as Regan came out to replace him in the second inning.
- 20:07Mo Pampas trying to get some heat on his pitching hand there, just blowing on it.
- 20:14Up on top of the mound and set to go to work with Kenhug after his lead,
- 20:17about eight or nine feet away from the bag to pitch in, close to him.
- 20:20Full count three and two.
- 20:25So Mo Pampas making his first opening day strike, beginning his fourth full Major League season.
- 20:31Just 21 years of age, he's won more games lifetime, 40 at that age,
- 20:35than any other pitcher in modern Major League history, except Babe Ruth and Bob Feller.
- 20:39Right are going, a swing, little pop-up, shortstop side.
- 20:42Ronnie Hanson there, and Hanson makes the catch to retire the side.
- 20:46Seven men batted for the Angels, and that is a red-hot beginning here in Baltimore
- 20:50for the 1961 American League season.
- 20:53In the inning, there were three runs on two hoods.
- 20:57Two-run homer by Klosinski, solo homer by Pampas,
- 21:00there was more errors and one man left.
- 21:02The score at the end of the first half of the first inning,
- 21:04the Angels three, Baltimore now coming to bat.
- 21:07There's light headed living in the yard, light headed for the sky.
- 21:15Light, refreshing ball staff beer.
- 21:19Great to enjoy right in your own backyard.
- 21:22Sure, a-dozing in the sun, joining for the fun of it.
- 21:26It's more fun with ball staff.
- 21:28So when your work's done,
- 21:30plunge yourself next to a bright, brimming glass floor.
- 21:33High school, inviting, welcome as a spring day.
- 21:38Small staffs on call, whenever America plays.
- 21:42There's light headed living in the yard, light headed ball staff.
- 21:45Light, refreshing ball staff beer.
- 21:48When America plays, it's a new year.
- 21:51Light, refreshing ball staff beer.
- 21:54There's light headed living in light headed ball staff.
- 21:57America's premium quality beer.
- 22:00Bottles are six can packs.
- 22:02The pleasure is yours with ball staff.
- 22:04Coast to coast, America's choice for a light headed living.
- 22:08Now the last half of the first inning at Baltimore,
- 22:10leading off for the Baltimore Orioles will be center fielder Jackie Brand.
- 22:14He will be followed by the right fielder Russ Snyder,
- 22:17and then by the third baseman Brooks Robinson.
- 22:19To set up the Angels defensively,
- 22:23Jack Luzinski is the first, Ken Housprabaddy is second,
- 22:27Pittsburgh College short, Eddie Oster third,
- 22:30Bob Serve in left field, Ken Houtenstetter in right,
- 22:33and the battery Eli Gerba and Del Rice.
- 22:37Eli with the Yankees last year, one six and lost four.
- 22:41Nothing in one record, lifetime against the Orioles.
- 22:45On September 26, 1959, Gerba lost in relief while pitching for the Yankees.
- 22:50He lost to Hal Skinny Brown, 7-2, in 11 innings.
- 22:54He did not work against the Orioles last year.
- 22:56So here is center fielder Jackie Brand stepping into the batter's box.
- 22:59Right handed batter.
- 23:01The on deck man is the right fielder Snyder.
- 23:04And the Angels lead three nothing in the last half of the first.
- 23:07The pitch, that calls.
- 23:09Put one right in there to make it nothing in one.
- 23:13Eli this spring had an earn run average of 2.63.
- 23:17Did some terrific work for the Angels during the exhibition season.
- 23:21In the 24 innings he worked to line up the pitch.
- 23:25Snyder, foot outside, one ball and one strike.
- 23:28Worked 24 innings, gave up a total of 26 hits, seven earn runs,
- 23:32one 12, struck out 11.
- 23:34And the earn run mark of 2.63, the best figure posted by any of the Angels pitchers this spring.
- 23:40The Boston and the one run delivery, dropped down the middle turns,
- 23:44that calls to make it one and two.
- 23:47John Stevens to fill and fire.
- 23:56So Eli has the honor here of being the first Angels pitcher.
- 24:03Has a two strike count on Jackie Brand.
- 24:05And the delivery turn, row outside, to make it two balls and two strikes.
- 24:19The Orioles, they very definitely missed the hitting power of Gene Woodlick.
- 24:27And the pitchers one on, drive ball, base hit out of the left field.
- 24:31Between Eddie Ozden, Fitz Mackell and the Orioles have a man on,
- 24:35Jackie Brand, that one, through the left side of the infield.
- 24:39So with the man on, here's the right fielder Russ Snyder.
- 25:00Snyder left handed hitter, with Kansas City in the 1960 season.
- 25:06And the motion, the pitchers swung it to us by one.
- 25:10Blinding fastball by Gerber.
- 25:12Snyder hit 2.60 with the Kansas City A's last year.
- 25:16Hit 3.13 with them in 1959.
- 25:21He has tremendous speed, good throwing arm,
- 25:24and the ability to hit shot line drives to all corners of the field.
- 25:29Here's the motion and the lineup pitch turn, row outside, to make it one ball and one strike.
- 25:35Russ was originally a product of the Yankee farm system,
- 25:39and he found his way to the Kansas City team in one of the many player transactions between the two clubs.
- 25:45And then he moved to the Orioles along with Wadie Herzog in exchange for Wayne Causey, Clint Courtney, and Bob Boyd.
- 25:51Makes his home in Nelson, Nebraska.
- 25:53Yost plays a shot of third, the curve ball, what a two-hot turn.
- 25:56Ball two to make it two and one.
- 25:59Joe Rice looked up the line to it first, with Jackie Branch staying right there.
- 26:02The on-deck man, one of the finest-looking youngsters in baseball today, third base from Brooks Robinson.
- 26:13Not only great defensively, but he is a tough man to deal with at the plate.
- 26:18Ball two and strike one.
- 26:21Nobody out, angels lead, free nothing, last half of the first.
- 26:24Stretch taken by Gribba and the pitch.
- 26:26Swung on, ground ball off of the second base side.
- 26:28Aspermotti goes to second for one, no relay to first.
- 26:31So the first play is made on the ground ball by Russ Snyder.
- 26:37Aspermotti came up with that ball, made the toss to Chris Krakow,
- 26:41but Krow with the speed of Snyder didn't chance the throw back to first.
- 26:46And with one out and the runner at first here is third baseman Brooks Robinson.
- 26:51Listen to the welcome this youngster gets.
- 26:55Snyder is on, on the field of his choice.
- 26:58One down, last half of the first inning.
- 27:01The angels out in front, three nothing.
- 27:03And the motion and the pitch, good curve ball for Snyder.
- 27:21Brooks Robinson right-handed batter and the pass ball by Gribba.
- 27:25Blow it outside to make it one and one.
- 27:28Brooks had a terrific spring.
- 27:29He wound up hitting 316, 25 hits and 79 times at bat.
- 27:34He and Hanson and Herzog and Gentile with the leading spring hitters.
- 27:39Kansas City and Boston, no score at the end of one.
- 27:43And the pitch, curved and low outside.
- 27:46Nice stop by Dale Rice, make it ball two and strike one.
- 27:50The outfield set up straight away, serve, hunt and person.
- 28:05Robinson wound up hitting 294 over the Orioles last year, 88 RBIs.
- 28:10And the delivery turn, a swing and a ground ball down to short.
- 28:14McHale over to Asper body for one, relay to first.
- 28:16They got it, get plenty of time.
- 28:18So the infield backs up Eli Gribba with a double play as Eli got Robinson to bounce one right at the shortstop, Fritz Brichel.
- 28:25Six to four to three to do it.
- 28:27The Baltimore Starry in the first inning, no runs, one hit, no errors, and with a twin killing, nobody left.
- 28:33So that is the first double play of the American League season for the Angels.
- 28:37The score at the end of one, Los Angeles Angels three, the Baltimore Orioles nothing.
- 28:44This is Paul Richards, manager of the Baltimore Orioles.
- 28:48The Orioles will be at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night, May 3rd.
- 28:55You'll be seeing such stars as Brooks Robinson, Chuck Estrada, Gus Triandos, Ron Hanson, and many others.
- 29:02Remember, the Angels meet the Orioles in a three-game series at Wrigley Field beginning Tuesday night, May 3rd.
- 29:10Well, thank you very much, Paul, and friends, a reminder that the ticket office at Comfortable Wrigley Field is open daily to serve you on a personal basis.
- 29:18The junior ticket manager, Billy Jordan and his five staff are there from 9.30 in the morning until 5.30 in the evening.
- 29:24And you telephone Adams 2-4761 for ticket information or stop in for your seat selections at easy to reach Wrigley Field.
- 29:38Well, we're getting set now for the second inning.
- 29:42Hold on to that Western Union tape. Steve just pulled off the Western Union ticker here and that looks mighty good.
- 29:47We'll have to keep this in our time capsule, Cal.
- 29:51Ted Klosinski, Homer, LA first, one on.
- 29:54At Baltimore, sir, Homer, LA first, men on.
- 29:58And at the end of that first half of the first inning, the Angels three and the Baltimore Orioles nothing.
- 30:05Now we're moving into the top half of the second. Here's Del Rice leading off and the first pitch to Del, up two high for ball one.
- 30:11No, Pappas on them on. Del has something in his eye with that wind kicking the dirt around down their round home plate.
- 30:17And it is still blowing in firstly from the left field corner, blowing toward right.
- 30:23Those pennants out there are really standing out.
- 30:28Here's the lineup by Pappas and the one-up in pitch to Del. Low outside, ball two, and it's two balls and no strikes.
- 30:34The Indians came up with six runs at Detroit.
- 30:37They knocked out Jim Bunning, the starter, and it's Cleveland six, Detroit nothing.
- 30:41The Tigers batting and facing Jim Perry in the last half of the second.
- 30:45Here's the two-nothing pitch and it's outside at the waste ball three, three and nothing.
- 30:50Activity again in the Baltimore bullpen.
- 31:02So John Papa, P-A-P-A, is throwing in the bullpen again.
- 31:07And the delivery down two, low ball four. Rice gets on with a third walk issued by Pappas in less than two innings.
- 31:14Coming up now will be the Angel pitcher.
- 31:17Here comes Eli, gingerly stepping up the steps there, the dugout up on the first base side where the Angels are located and moving out toward the plate.
- 31:27Our part of the fight for mental health is to understand.
- 31:32For a free booklet, How to Deal with Your Tensions, Write Better Health, Box 3000, New York 1, New York.
- 31:41Eli Gerber steps in now with a round of it first base and nobody out, second inning. Angels lead three, nothing.
- 31:49Here's the stretch taken by Pappas. They look for the sacrifice, but the pitch, low and close, ball one.
- 31:54So Pappas still off the target.
- 31:57Well, it's a chilly day in Baltimore, but it got hot in a hurry there in the first inning.
- 32:04With a walk to Pearson, the two-round homer by Klosinski and the long poke with the bases empty by Bob Serr.
- 32:11Stretch again and the delivery on the way, strike call to make it one and one.
- 32:19Here they expected between 30 and 40,000 people today and from the looks of things, they just about realized that estimate.
- 32:32Here's the one-one pitch and it's run out in front of the plate. Going for it, Priandas goes to second, got him at second base.
- 32:38Gerber's safe at first, no throw made. So the sacrifice failed.
- 32:42Leila had that pitch run out just in front of the plate and on the first base side by a couple of feet.
- 32:49And Gus Priandas, great, quick, agile receiver he is despite his size,
- 32:53grabbed that ball and whooped it through to the shortstop Ronnie Hanson to get the force out on Del Rice riding in.
- 33:00So Gerber on a field of choice. Now with one out, here's the third baseman, Eddie Yoss.
- 33:06He's started things off by popping out to Hanson in the first inning.
- 33:16Milk Tappas getting ready to operate on Yoss, got him a curveball in close at the letters for ball one.
- 33:22In the national league in the game between the Cubs and Cincinnati, Glenn Hobbie starting for the Cubs and the definite starter for the Red Legs, the young fellow Jim O'Toole.
- 33:32One nothing count on Yoss down the pitch, two low to him, ball two and it's two and nothing.
- 33:37The Minnesota Twins failed in the second inning. The Yankees are now batting, no score in that game.
- 33:42At New York, Ramos and Ford. Here the Angels lead three nothing and we're in the first half of the second with a man on and one out.
- 33:53Here's for Matty on deck. As Yoss saw Tappas taking so much time that Eddie elected to step out of the batter's box.
- 34:02Grabbed the hand for the dirt, moves in again. Now the two nothing pitch. Two hat to ball, pray and it's three and nothing.
- 34:15If Yoss manages to get on with the walk, knowing Paul Richards usual pattern, he will probably be out there in a hurry or have Lumen Harris out there to see Tappas.
- 34:27And the pitch is like coal, did I get pray and why? Of course that thought is going through young Milton's mind right now too.
- 34:35He doesn't want to see the man from Waxahachie, Texas come out there either in person or send out one of his representatives.
- 34:43So the stretch and the three one delivery into Taptin and it's ball four.
- 34:50So that puts two men on.
- 34:57Now Mr. Richards, seated down there in the brand new Baltimore dugout, hasn't made a move.
- 35:04Up here is the sign going out to the bullpen, are you ready?
- 35:08This is made by Lumen Harris, he takes his cap off and he signals out to the bullpen to Harry Brekeen that if he thinks that Richard Tong and the bullpen is ready,
- 35:18that well if he has trouble here with us for money, they'll have Tappas out in a hurry.
- 35:23Runners at first and second and the pitch to Kent up too high for ball one.
- 35:28One nothing count now. Angels lead three nothing and a chance to get some more.
- 35:34And the GERBA is on at second base, Eddie Oost is at first.
- 35:41And the motion the pitch swung on, little roller foul up the third base side and it's one ball and one strike.
- 35:55So in less than two innings, in an inning and a third, Tappas has given up four walks, only two hits.
- 36:03But what beautiful sights they were, both home runs.
- 36:06Here's the stretch again by Tappas and the Oriole right-hander changed up on him and got it way up high for ball two and it's two and one.
- 36:16Two and one count on Ken Aspermati. Ken was called out on strikes in the first inning.
- 36:22On deck, Albie Pearson.
- 36:27Here's that stretch again and the delivery coming in now, a fastball swung on back to hard out. Look out there.
- 36:36Play those charm shots up here boys, you need those plastic helmet ladders out there.
- 36:41That one came in and ricocheted off both sections of glass landing on Booth and passed over Dick Nelson's head and went right back out of the ballpark.
- 36:52Like a giant pinball machine. Two balls and two strikes on Ken Aspermati.
- 36:59Tappas goes to the stretch again and the pitch, check swing, blueprints down the first base side foul and away from Jim Gentile.
- 37:09Ken Aspermati checked his swing on a high delivery to him and he blew one down the line.
- 37:21So it's still the native count, two balls and two strikes.
- 37:31Come on Ken, runners at first and second here with only one out.
- 37:38Tappas the great young right-hander trying to hang on here and hang inside.
- 37:43Here's the two-two delivery now, swing and a foul cut back on the screen and it's still two balls and two strikes.
- 37:48Blubbing out the night game with the Orioles tomorrow night.
- 37:53Today the Washington Santa Feers and the White Sox who officially opened the season yesterday and Washington had the day off.
- 38:00And then they will return to action again tomorrow.
- 38:04And from here we'll be traveling to Boston, then to New York, then on to Detroit, then to Chicago and then back home.
- 38:11But Los Angeles on April 27th with the Minnesota Twins, here's the two-two putts coming in now, swing, a shot, down by Robinson at third.
- 38:19Let's see if he has a play of the third or second, fourth play of the second base.
- 38:23And he lost his fourth to second base.
- 38:28Here's Bill Rettig coming out and they're going to hop all over John Rice.
- 38:33Rettig coming out now as Brooks Robinson made a fantastic stop for that ball at third.
- 38:40Go about for it, knocked it down, it flicked off his glove, rolled behind third by about ten or twelve feet.
- 38:46He picked the ball up, no chance for a play on Goebel at third so he got that ball to second base, depleting and it was in time.
- 38:55So Aspermatti on a field of choice and robbed of an extra base hit.
- 39:00Bill Wigny not going to give up on this easily.
- 39:03He is still working on second base up by John Rice.
- 39:06Up and down go the hands and this is the first full-scale argument of the 1961 season.
- 39:12And now Rigg has turned his back, kicks the dirt like a snorting bull as he comes back from second base.
- 39:19And the wind kicks up some dirt of its own around the home plate area.
- 39:24Runners at first and third now with two out.
- 39:28Without that play at second base, the Angels would have had the bases loaded but they only went away.
- 39:37Here's Albie Kirstenstep again.
- 39:39Runners at first and third, two down. Angels lead, clean up again.
- 39:42The pitcher on the way to Albie, strike right at the knee.
- 39:54So Brooks Robinson turns in fantastic play number one.
- 39:58And the motion, the pitch, curve, stack call over the inside edge of the plate to make it nothing and two.
- 40:08Ball and two count.
- 40:10The Indians lead, Detroit sucks nothing.
- 40:12That game in the last half of the third, Detroit batting.
- 40:15Here's the stretch and the two-strike pitch to Albie.
- 40:18And again, low and close, one ball and two strikes.
- 40:27Runners at first and third, Aspermatti is on at first.
- 40:30Eli Goebel the pitcher on here third.
- 40:32Stretch again, Pappas delivers and Kirsten takes down low, ball two.
- 40:36Fastball by Pappas.
- 40:39Two balls and two strikes.
- 40:44Now they have two pitchers throwing in the bullpen for the Orioles, a pair of right-handers.
- 40:53Here's the motion again on the delivery person, swings, line drive, base hit, left center field.
- 40:57Goebel comes in with a fourth run.
- 41:00Get Aspermatti, holds the second base and the mighty Mike Albie Pearson shoots a line drive for a base hit to right center field.
- 41:08Let's pause now for station identification.
- 41:10This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 41:13This is KMPC Los Angeles Modern Radio, Action Radio.
- 41:19And this is Johnny Grant reminding you there's always plenty of action on the freeway club every afternoon on KMPC, 710 on everybody's dial.
- 41:31Well, the coach, Lumenhaus of the Orioles has come out to the mound.
- 41:39And this will be all for Milt Pappas.
- 41:43They're loading up the convertible out there.
- 41:45They use the convertible to bring the pitchers out of the bullpen.
- 41:51So before Ted Flisinski steps in, Ted won't have a chance to face Pappas again.
- 41:57And of course, that big thought ran through Paul Richards' mind.
- 42:01He said, well, after he kissed that one in the first inning with the man on,
- 42:07they're going to deck Milt Pappas at this point.
- 42:11So the base hit by Albie Pearson that makes this a 4-0 game is the hit that does it.
- 42:19Here's a real break for you folks who love baseball but live on a budget.

- 43:03Telephone, write, or visit Wrigley Field now for tickets that ensure seeing the game's greatest stars right there.
- 43:10The address, 435 East 42nd Place, the telephone number Adams 2-4761.
- 43:16Come in, Cal.
- 43:17Let's check our scoreboard here.
- 43:20The Chicago White Sox and the Austin Dissidenters on today played yesterday at Washington in the Presidential Open,
- 43:28and the White Sox win a good 4-3.
- 43:32At Yankee Stadium this afternoon, the Minnesota Twins and the Yankees are nothing, nothing at the end of 2.
- 43:38The Bravos pitching for Minnesota and Whitey Ford going for the Yanks.
- 43:44Cleveland had a big 6-run second inning.
- 43:47When we fought it back at Tiger Stadium in the last half of 3rd, Cleveland leads the Tigers 6-0.
- 43:54Jim Perry, 18 game winner for Tribe last year, pitching for Cleveland.
- 43:58But the Tigers' bunning started knocked out of the box the second inning when Reagan came on.
- 44:04Kansas City and the Boston Red Sox, nothing, nothing at the end of 1st.
- 44:07Ray Hubbard pitching for Kansas City and for Boston, Manbo Kemp.
- 44:16In the National League, the Cubs are at Cincinnati, lobby against O'Toole.
- 44:21St. Louis at New York, Ebrolio against Vaughan.
- 44:24The Pirates at San Francisco, win against San Jones.
- 44:29And tonight at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, the Phillies with Robin Roberts going against the Dodgers with Don Drysdale.
- 44:36And on behalf of our broadcasting crew and all of the angel organization, we'd like to wish the Dodgers a lot of good luck.
- 44:45Well, we have a new pitcher out there taking his warm-up throws.
- 44:48I mean, his young John Papa, PAPA, 5'11, one-nighter, right-hander from Stutford, Connecticut.
- 44:58He was with Appleton, Wisconsin last year where he was reckoned with 7 and 6.
- 45:13During spring training, he was 1 and 2, working 24 innings, giving up 23 hits, 14 runs, 11 earned runs, walked 17 and fanned 7.
- 45:24So he's coming up here with the angels leading 4-0 at the top of the 2nd.
- 45:28Asked for money on 2nd.
- 45:30Here's Don 1st and big clue who had a home run, a two-run job on the 1st inning up here and again down.
- 45:37John Papa is just 21 years of age.
- 45:42Little right-hander and set to go to work on Ted Klosinski.
- 45:45Bob Serb on deck.
- 45:46Runners at 1st and 2nd and with 2 out, curveball and too close to him.
- 45:50Ted wheeled away from it and it's ball one.
- 45:54So from Papas to PAPA.
- 45:58The Orioles roster is already 2 below the opening day 28-player maximum.
- 46:03So as a result, they have retained this 21-year-old.
- 46:06Very impressive this spring, 1-7 and lost 6 in class B ball in 1960.
- 46:12He takes the stretch.
- 46:131-0 pitch.
- 46:14Flu looks at a curve, low and close.
- 46:16Let up on that pitch and it's ball two, 2-0.
- 46:22The angels lead 4-0 and the run driven in by the little guy, potent guy here.
- 46:28In this one in the early innings, Albie Persidy walked in the 1st and scored a run.
- 46:33He's single to drive in a run here in the 2nd.
- 46:36Genas Pramati is on at 2nd base.
- 46:38Albie, a way to his lead at 1st.
- 46:40Papas got 2-0 on Klosinski and the push in the pitch.
- 46:44Fastball, swing and a miss.
- 46:46Mulney had that one in there before you know it.
- 46:49And the count is 2-1.
- 46:51Paul Richards sat down in his office earlier when we all went in to visit him.
- 46:57He had done quite a bit in completely changing around Papas' pitching style this spring.
- 47:02He's got to help him tremendously in his pitching rhythm and also in his leverage.
- 47:11And he said there's one thing about his fastball, he said he doesn't appear to be overpoweringly fast,
- 47:17but that fastball does something.
- 47:20Did plenty there as Klosinski waved at it.
- 47:22Here's the stretch for the 2-0 on delivery.
- 47:24Now swing and there's a long, long poke.
- 47:26Goodbye baseball and it's way out there.
- 47:29Go!
- 47:32I had to check the expression that manager Al Lomaz with the white socks over here.
- 47:44How about that one Al?
- 47:46Muscles, huh?
- 47:50Al said earlier, he said it must be the fact that he's wearing that sweatshirt.
- 47:55He said if he had those muscles showing, what would he do?
- 48:01A tremendous poke out of here, a three-run homer by Klosinski and the Angels lead 7-0.
- 48:09As for body came in, Albie Pearson checked in.
- 48:12Klosinski with back-to-back homers.
- 48:15Five RBIs for 10.
- 48:19He's putting on a one-man performance here for all of the fans.
- 48:23Here's Bob Serb, a swing and a foul back on the screen, strike one.
- 48:30And not too many smiling faces at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 48:35Three runs in the first inning, four more here on the second.
- 48:40That is only the fourth Angel hit, but of the four, three had been home runs.
- 48:47Bob Serb hit a long job in the first inning and the motion, look out, Bob, high and close to him.
- 48:52And it's one ball and one strike.
- 48:59One-one count on Bob Serb.
- 49:06What a day for Klu.
- 49:08Here's the one-one delivery now, swing, a shot, foul, into the upper deck, down the right field line,
- 49:13right down one of the exit holes up there, and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 49:17In the National League in the St. Louis-Milwaukee game at County Stadium in Milwaukee,
- 49:21Ernie Brodial pitching for St. Louis, Warren Spahn for the Milwaukee Braves.
- 49:28Two o'clock temperature reading, 51 degrees.
- 49:32And they're clocking some good strong runs.
- 49:36We have made reference to them a number of times.
- 49:40Here's the motion and a two-strike that's led up on it, swung a miss, strike three.
- 49:44Bob Serb, fooled on that changeup by Pappa, strikes out to retire the side,
- 49:50but Pluszki gave Pappa a good major league indoctrination lesson there with that long pre-run homer.
- 49:58So on the second inning, four runs check-in on a total of two hits, two waps in the inning.
- 50:04There were no errors, and with that home run by Pluszki, nobody left.
- 50:08The score at the end of the first half of the second are Angels 7, Baltimore nothing.
- 50:13So you fans who enjoyed the great Pacific Coast League games at Wrigley Field
- 50:18will be seeing some familiar faces in the 61 Angels lineup.
- 50:22Gerber, Bilko, Aspomade, they were outstanding players in the OPCL,
- 50:27making a point to give the Angels pure support throughout the season.
- 50:32Our own Southern California team presented on radio and TV by lighthearted full-staff beer,
- 50:39brisk, refreshing as a cool sea breeze, our favorite coast to coast, wherever America plays.
- 50:47Have a full staff.
- 50:49There's lighthearted living and lighthearted full-staff, light refreshing full-staff beer.
- 50:55When America plays, the name you hear is light refreshing full-staff beer.
- 51:01There's lighthearted living and lighthearted full-staff, America's premium quality beer.
- 51:10Carol and I were just discussing, we don't know if they have a tape measure long enough for that one that flew in.
- 51:16We figure it was about 440 feet away or 450 on the fly because it went into the bleacher area
- 51:22above the Baltimore bullpen and this is well beyond the wire fence.
- 51:26It's 380 feet to the point where the low wire fence meets up with the brick wall that they have out there in right field.
- 51:35And this was well beyond that and about 20 rows up into that section.
- 51:39So that was one mighty shot by Kwasowski, good for three more runs.
- 51:43The Angels lead 7-0 and here's the last half of the second coming up.
- 51:47First baseman Jim Gentile, guy with good power.
- 51:54You have to treat him with plenty of respect up there at the plate.
- 51:58Gus Priandus on deck and then the left fielder, Gene Stevens.
- 52:03Gentile the 1960 while they're pitting 292 with this ball club, 6'4", 215 pounds.
- 52:09And the fastball by Gerber up high and away for ball one.
- 52:1398 RBI's last year, he had 21 home runs.
- 52:17Cincinnati has taken a 1-0 lead over the Cubs at the end of one.
- 52:21Frank Robinson-Homer to the first inning.
- 52:24Eli Gerber 1-0 on Gentile, the big luck hand of the hitter.
- 52:28And the delivery turn, Curbs, long on drive, base hit out of the right field.
- 52:32Albie Kersen makes the pick up with this ball.
- 52:35Gentile is on with a second Baltimore hit.
- 52:38Gus Priandus, listen to this reception.
- 52:54Gus Priandus 6'3", 220 pounds with the Orioles last year, 269 batting average, 54 RBI's, 12 homers.
- 53:03He was handicapped with a bum hand.
- 53:07Bad finger and the curveball, too, and a long drive on into left field.
- 53:11But the one who holds this ball up, observe, over a couple of steps, makes the catch.
- 53:16You hit one up into that wind, drive again as it is from left field toward the right field corner.
- 53:22And those are just routine, practically routine, fly balls.
- 53:26Any other time, had it been still out there, and the sound of that one, that ball would have been gone.
- 53:32But that's that terrific wind blowing in.
- 53:37Gentile on at first.
- 53:41Here's Gene Stevens.
- 53:54This is Rodney Hanson, double check on that.
- 53:59So they've made a switch in the batting order.
- 54:03Rodney Hanson, first pitch to him by Gerber up high.
- 54:10So like this, Rodney Hanson, a short stop up there, right-handed batter.
- 54:17And the strike to him offered by Gerber.
- 54:21Seven to nothing, the Angels lead, last half of the second inning.
- 54:29Rodney, 6'3", 190 pounds, hit 255 with the Orioles last year.
- 54:33Pitch by Gerber, the swing, a little tap at the third-base side.
- 54:36Eli makes the barehand pick-up, goes to first. He got it.
- 54:39And the runner, Gentile, goes to second base.
- 54:42So Hanson is out of there, pitcher to first.
- 54:46From Gerber to Klosinski.
- 54:49Fast fielding by Gerber in the trick.
- 54:52Gentile out at second base.
- 54:54And here is Stevens.
- 54:59Cleveland, 6', Detroit, 2' at the end of free at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
- 55:05Minnesota Twins nothing, the Yankees nothing at the end of free.
- 55:09Here the Angels lead, 7 to nothing, last half of the second.
- 55:13Stevens in left field today.
- 55:22Waddy Herzog on the injured list for the Orioles.
- 55:28Otherwise he would have been on the starting lineup.
- 55:30Curveball by Gerber, low and close.
- 55:38Herzog sustained a broken nose in Richmond Sunday.
- 55:40He was released from Richmond Memorial Hospital yesterday.
- 55:44He was out here at the ballpark. I saw him this morning.
- 55:47He expects to be able to play in about a week.
- 55:50And the pitch, curve spun on, fouled off to the right side of the plate.
- 55:57Two out here and a 1-1 count on the batter, Stevens.
- 56:00Gentile on at second.
- 56:05Stevens who filled in for Ted Williams with the Red Sox for a number of years.
- 56:15Tall left-handed hitter, Stan 6'3".
- 56:17Hit 235 last year with a combination of the Red Sox and Baltimore.
- 56:22He was traded for Willie Tasbee.
- 56:23The pitch to him outside by Gerber and it's ball to and strike one.
- 56:29One of the most sought after young players in America.
- 56:31And nevertheless he remained with the Red Sox for a period of six years,
- 56:36serving as an understudy for Ted Williams.
- 56:38And he found little chance to play enough to realize his true potential.
- 56:46Joined the Orioles in June of last year, last season.
- 56:49Stretched by Gerber. They make, no, they don't go for the pickoff.
- 56:52They deliver down too low for ball three.
- 56:55Footsie Burkel had moved in behind the baseman of Gentile.
- 56:59But Gerber instead concentrated on the batter and it's now ball three and strike one.
- 57:06Gina makes his home during the winter in Oklahoma City.
- 57:12He's one of the few players in professional baseball to have hit safely three times in a single inning.
- 57:19He's at the high spot in his career today.
- 57:21Touch to him outside at the waist for ball four.
- 57:25So Stevens is on with a first walk issued by Gerber.
- 57:29Gentile is there at second base.
- 57:32Here's the second baseman, Mark Breeding.
- 57:35The second baseman, number one, Mark Breeding.
- 57:44One of the factors which cannot be overlooked in the success of the 1960 Orioles
- 57:48was the fine all-around performance of this guy at second base.
- 57:54One up hitting 267.
- 57:56Right-hander up here with runners at first and second and two out.
- 57:59And the pitch by Gerber. Nice one.
- 58:01Snapped it right in there for a strike.
- 58:03He drove in 43 runs, hit three homers.
- 58:12He participated in the lion's share of the record-breaking 172 double plays
- 58:18reeled off by the Bird infield last year.
- 58:21Swing on a good slider by Gerber.
- 58:24And a miss for two strikes.
- 58:33Boy with pretty good speed and a good baserunner, too.
- 58:35Breeding led the club and stilled in bases during the 1960 season.
- 58:39But there's one thing to remember, that Baltimore had never been much of a running ball club.
- 58:47Two strikes on Breeding now with Gentile at second.
- 58:49Stevens on at first. Last half of the second.
- 58:51The Angels lead. Baltimore 7-0.
- 58:54Here's the pitch on the way, and he checked his swing.
- 58:56Check it outside.
- 58:58And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 59:08One ball and two strikes.
- 59:09This is Don Wells with Bob Kelly and Steve Bailey at Memorial Stadium.
- 59:14What a blustery day, but today off to a good start with seven of them up there on the board in the first two innings.
- 59:25Two-strike delivery coming up now.
- 59:26Runners at first and second.
- 59:27And the fastball's swung on.
- 59:28Ground ball down to short.
- 59:29Burkel bobbles that ball.
- 59:30Goes to second. Goes by outside.
- 59:34There is Chantillo coming in to score.
- 59:37And the Orioles wind up with runners at second and third.
- 59:44Ground ball that was hit right at Burkel at short.
- 59:47Bobbled the ball.
- 59:49Came up with it.
- 59:50Still had time to get it to second base to try to gain the force on Stevens, but fits through the ball in the right field.
- 59:57That'll be a fielder's choice.
- 59:59And an error for Burkel.
- 1:00:03So an error of six.
- 1:00:07So make that two errors.
- 1:00:08An error for bobbling the ball initially and then the error on the throws.
- 1:00:13So a pair of errors on Burkel.
- 1:00:17Well, let's see what manager Paul Richards elects to do here.
- 1:00:20He's going to make a switch.
- 1:00:25At this stage of the game, down by a 7-1 score, he will have to come up with a change.
- 1:00:32Lift his pitcher, Pappa, out of there.
- 1:00:35And we'll wait and see now.
- 1:00:38He's coming up off the bench.
- 1:00:42Looks like it's going to be Earl Robinson.
- 1:00:48This will be Earl Robinson.
- 1:00:53Now he has been recalled.
- 1:00:55It's going to be Dave Philly.
- 1:00:58Earl Robinson came up, and they called him back.
- 1:01:01And here's the great veteran, Dave Philly.
- 1:01:10Dave will be up here to swing for the pitcher, Pappa.
- 1:01:15Runners at second and third, and with two out.
- 1:01:23Dave Philly is a sports hitter, so he will be batting left-handed against the right-hander, Eli Gerba,
- 1:01:29from Paris, Texas.
- 1:01:31Baltimore, last season, 265 average, and the first pitch to him of strike.
- 1:01:37And with the Phillies in San Francisco, he wound up hitting 197.
- 1:01:44Dave Philly, born in 1920, down in Texas.
- 1:01:49Runners at second and third, one run is in.
- 1:01:52The Angels out in front, 7-1.
- 1:01:55As an unearned run checked in, two errors charged to Braquel,
- 1:01:59first for not being able to come up with Breeding's ground ball,
- 1:02:04and then for his throw by Aspermatti in the right field,
- 1:02:08enabling Gentile to come in and score.
- 1:02:10Stevens on the third, Breeding at second base, two down.
- 1:02:14Last half of the second inning.
- 1:02:15Here's the motion by Gerba, and the pitch coming in to Davis.
- 1:02:18Swing and a foul tipped.
- 1:02:20He's got a pace of it, and it's two strikes.
- 1:02:43Nothing in two count that Gerba has on Philly.
- 1:02:50The outfield and the infield swung well around to the right.
- 1:02:52The motion, the pitch, down, too low to him.
- 1:02:55Gerba thought he had him.
- 1:02:57Started to walk off the mound, and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:03:01Dave started his organized baseball career in Class C ball in 1940.
- 1:03:09Got up to the White Sox in 1941, stayed with the White Sox for a number of years,
- 1:03:14251 in fact, for end of the 51 season.
- 1:03:18Then went the Philadelphia A's, Cleveland, Baltimore, Detroit, the Phillies, Giants, back to Baltimore.
- 1:03:25So much time taken now that Philly steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:03:31Davis, 40 years of age, but he is in prime physical condition.
- 1:03:39Here's the motion, and the two-strike pitch to Philly.
- 1:03:42A swung little pop-up, shortstop side.
- 1:03:44Brichelle makes the call for the ball.
- 1:03:46Pritz is there, makes the catch to retire the side.
- 1:03:50So on the second inning, one run, an unearned run.
- 1:03:53One hit, one walk, pair of errors, and there were two men left.
- 1:03:58Fans to score at the end of two are Los Angeles Angels 7 and the Baltimore Orioles 1.
- 1:04:07Now Falstaff presents Angel in the Spotlight to help you get to know our Southern California team better.
- 1:04:14And today's Angel in the Spotlight, the boy he is really in the Spotlight,
- 1:04:18a Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Ted Flizyski.
- 1:04:21Man, it's hard to believe they come in packages this big.
- 1:04:24Born in Argo, Illinois in 1924, Big Flu stands 6'2", weighs 245.
- 1:04:30He's got muscles he never uses, but he's using them all out here today.
- 1:04:34Ted was one of the top home run hitters in the National League from 1953 to 1956
- 1:04:39with 40, 49, 47, and 35 round trippers.
- 1:04:44Ted had 10 RBIs in the 1959 World Series against the Dodgers,
- 1:04:48but he was a member of the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:04:50Big Flu attended Indiana University, played football naturally.
- 1:04:55See Ted Flizyski and his teammates in action starting April 27th at the Brighley Field
- 1:05:00or catch the games on radio, compliments of lighthearted Falstaff beer.
- 1:05:04There's lighthearted living and lighthearted Falstaff.
- 1:05:08Light-refreshing Falstaff beer.
- 1:05:11When in America, play the name you hear.
- 1:05:14There's light-refreshing Falstaff beer.
- 1:05:17There's lighthearted living and lighthearted Falstaff.
- 1:05:20America's premium quality beer.
- 1:05:24Well, we have another pitching change now made by manager Paul Richards as West Stock,
- 1:05:31right-hander, comes in to work for the Orioles, seeing Pappas, Papa, and Stock.
- 1:05:39Let's pause now for station identification.
- 1:05:44This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 1:05:47This is 50,000 watt KMPC Los Angeles, home of the Angels,
- 1:05:51and our angelic early morning disc jockey, Dick Whittinghill, is Action Radio,
- 1:05:56modern radio on KMPC 710 on everybody's dial.
- 1:06:09When you look out of the records, there aren't too many home runs hit in this ballpark.
- 1:06:13It's a tough ballpark in which to hit homers.
- 1:06:16And I think that this is probably one of the most productive days that any team has had.
- 1:06:22In fact, I would guarantee that this sets an all-time record for Memorial Stadium
- 1:06:28in first and second inning home run production.
- 1:06:31The fact that three have been hit in the first two innings of today's game.
- 1:06:387-1 score, the Angels lead, third inning getting underway,
- 1:06:42and West Stock, right-hander, faces center fielder Ken Hunt.
- 1:06:47Ken walked in the first inning.
- 1:06:49He is the sixth man of the batting order, then Brichel.
- 1:06:51And the fastball by Stock is down two low for ball one.
- 1:06:55Stock with Baltimore last year, wound up winning two and losing two.
- 1:06:59He was with Miami to begin with in the 60 season, 1-8, lost six.
- 1:07:06He has a sinking fastball, gets it over the plate wall.
- 1:07:10And a fastball outside corner.
- 1:07:13One ball and one strike.
- 1:07:22Born in 1934, stands 6-1, weighs 177 pounds,
- 1:07:26but a temp by Hunt, sales foul up on the screen behind the plate.
- 1:07:30And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:07:35A good permanent assignment for Stock in the Baltimore bullpen.
- 1:07:47The Angels lead 7-1, starting the third inning.
- 1:07:53Here's the two-strike pitch to Ken Hunt.
- 1:07:55Hit him, got him right up on the wrist.
- 1:07:59Got him on the right wrist as he fell away from that pitch by Stock.
- 1:08:02And Hunt hit here, gets on to start things off in the third.
- 1:08:10Ma Belli of the coaches first comes over to check on Ken in case he's all right.
- 1:08:14Here's the shortstop for Brichel.
- 1:08:20That one also, Nick Gus Triandos.
- 1:08:23There was one that glanced off the wrist, then the bat of Hunt.
- 1:08:30And then caught Gus Triandos just above the wrist, his bare hand.
- 1:08:36So time was taken and Gus went out, walked around, talked to Stock for a moment,
- 1:08:40now coming back behind the plate.
- 1:08:42First Brichel who popped out to Rodney Hanson,
- 1:08:44the shortstop to retire the side in the first inning,
- 1:08:46steps in now with Hunt on it first, nobody out.
- 1:08:50And the next man up there will be the catcher, Del Rice.
- 1:08:55Tomorrow's game will be Steve Barber against Ned Garver.
- 1:08:59And the stretch, Stock delivers, right-hawing, a swing and a foul fly
- 1:09:02out of play down the right field line, traveling into the upper deck.
- 1:09:05And it's one strike.
- 1:09:07Minnesota, nothing. The New York Yankees, nothing.
- 1:09:10At the end of four, the Indians of Cleveland, seven.
- 1:09:13The Detroit Tigers, two.
- 1:09:15Detroit batting, last half of the fourth.
- 1:09:17Kansas City, two. Boston, nothing. Last half of the third.
- 1:09:20In the National League, Central 91, the Cubs, nothing.
- 1:09:23At the end of two, St. Louis, nothing.
- 1:09:25Milwaukee, nothing.
- 1:09:26And the Braves are batting in their half of the second.
- 1:09:28So those are all the scorers up to date.
- 1:09:31Ken Hunt running on that last pitch.
- 1:09:33A way to his late at first, drives a throw, Stock whips one over to Gentil.
- 1:09:37But Ken went jumping right back to the bag.
- 1:09:42Here's the motion and the pitch for Cal Splains, ground ball, third base side.
- 1:09:45Robinson over to Breeding for one, relay to Perth, and time, double play.
- 1:09:51Make it really, push that ball around the infield.
- 1:09:53Robinson to Breeding for Gentil.
- 1:09:56And these two clubs even up, a double play apiece.
- 1:10:00Pitch for Cal, bouncing one down to the third baseman, Butch Robinson.
- 1:10:05Now with two out, here is the catcher, Del Rice.
- 1:10:08No walk to start the second inning.
- 1:10:15Clouds overhead, that wind continues to sail them across the sky.
- 1:10:19That's strong breeze.
- 1:10:22The motion by the Orioles, right-hander, Stock.
- 1:10:24Pitch one on, drives deep out of the left field.
- 1:10:26Breaking back for the ball goes Stevens.
- 1:10:28Wind holds this one up, and Stevens makes the catch.
- 1:10:30So Rice really pounded one well out of left field, but it was fighting the wind all the way.
- 1:10:35In the third, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:10:40Down to the double play, nobody left.
- 1:10:42Score at the end of the first half of the third, the Angels 7, Baltimore 1.
- 1:10:48Well, seems like everybody's doing it, Donald.
- 1:10:50Doing what, Robert?
- 1:10:51Riding around the hometown team, getting sets to go all out for our Angels in 1961.
- 1:10:57But I'll tell you something else Californians are doing, are going for, Bob.
- 1:11:01And that's handy glass cans of the Bear that bring here the Angels right-handed Paul Stanton.
- 1:11:05Well, you can't blame them.
- 1:11:07Those trim, no-deposit bottles are just the things for convenience.
- 1:11:11Real space, they respond, right in the palm of your hand, to any shell.
- 1:11:16Yes, they're just the thing for bottled beer and Johnup too, brewing with choice and cheerful real beer flavors.
- 1:11:22So let's jump to a six-pack or two of right-hearted living.
- 1:11:26Handy no-deposit glass cans of right-hearted Paul Stanton, America's premium quality beer.
- 1:11:34There's right-hearted living, and right-hearted balls.
- 1:11:37There's America's premium quality beer.
- 1:11:41Well, we're off to quite a start.
- 1:11:46There's the sun trying to peek through again.
- 1:11:48Yeah, I tell you, it's been cold every time I've ever been in Baltimore.
- 1:11:52I was remarking down there before to the custodian in charge of the front box.
- 1:11:56He says, I've seen you before someplace, haven't I?
- 1:11:59I guess I've been here with the Rams.
- 1:12:01This is the same kind of Baltimore weather I'm used to.
- 1:12:04Well, let's see what happens now in the Baltimore half of the third.
- 1:12:09Center field with Jackie Brandt steps in.
- 1:12:14Jackie, in the first inning, had a base hit.
- 1:12:17Hit one between Yost and Burkell in the left field.
- 1:12:21Right-handed batter and the motion, the pitch by Gerber.
- 1:12:23Swing, same spot, base hit, left field.
- 1:12:27Jackie Brandt didn't waste any time up there.
- 1:12:30Took a cut on that initial offering by Gerber and pounded one again in the hole between short and third.
- 1:12:36Here is the left-handed batting right fielder, Ross Snyder.
- 1:12:41He hit and of a fielder's choice, or reached out a fielder's choice, hitting it over force play on the first inning.
- 1:12:49So right of the first, Angel's lead, stopping the run.
- 1:12:52We're in the last of the third.
- 1:12:55Here's the stretch.
- 1:12:56Yost coming in from third and the pitch down low for a ball.
- 1:12:59One ball to no strikes.
- 1:13:03By that I don't mean when I say Yost coming in from third, that down by six runs, that they find any sacrificing out of there.
- 1:13:09But Snyder with his great speed could possibly be bunting for the hit.
- 1:13:13He doesn't want him to get on.
- 1:13:15And the pitch cutoff, late foul tip.
- 1:13:17One ball and one strike.
- 1:13:31The Orioles last year finished second to the Yankees, trailed them by eight games.
- 1:13:38And they were two games ahead of the third place White Sox.
- 1:13:42Gerber ready with the one-one delivery.
- 1:13:43Curve high and outside.
- 1:13:48Ball two and strike one.
- 1:14:06So the two-one delivery ready here by Gerber.
- 1:14:08High and outside.
- 1:14:09Ball three and it's three-one.
- 1:14:15So Eli pitching to the left-hander, Rod Snyder, having trouble with him.
- 1:14:20And Del Rice goes out to talk to Eli.
- 1:14:24Here's Eddie Yost coming over from his spot of third to join the conversation.
- 1:14:29Rice coming back behind the plate.
- 1:14:31Eddie going back over to the bag.
- 1:14:32And Eli takes a moment, gets that glove off, rubs up this ball, and checks around the infield.
- 1:14:41Takes his cap off for a moment.
- 1:14:44Standing right on the bag, Jackie Brand.
- 1:14:46Way to his lead now.
- 1:14:47Kwasinski playing off the bag.
- 1:14:48Three-one delivery coming in.
- 1:14:50Not too high.
- 1:14:51Ball four.
- 1:14:52Well, they're two-one with nobody out in the third.
- 1:15:01And here's Robinson.
- 1:15:04We're in the business section of the batting order now with Robinson, Gen Seale, and Friambo coming up in order.
- 1:15:16And we're going to see some activity in the Angels bullpen.
- 1:15:29Here is Brooks Robinson, right-handed batter.
- 1:15:32Hit into a double play.
- 1:15:34First time up, pitch to him, strike call.
- 1:15:36Work the outside front of the plate, strike one.
- 1:15:44Jackie Brand on his second base.
- 1:15:45Russ Niter is here at first.
- 1:15:48We're in the last half of the third.
- 1:15:53Eli Gerber takes that stretch again.
- 1:15:55The look toward the lead man at second and the pitch.
- 1:15:58Hook outside at the waist.
- 1:15:59Ball one and strike one.
- 1:16:01Dex Poveger throws for the Angels in the bullpen out beyond the low-wire fence, 390 feet away.
- 1:16:12So Gerber one and one on Robinson.
- 1:16:16Robinson can on many occasions be a good long ball hitter.
- 1:16:21And the next pitch to him, the fast ball in there, caught him by surprise.
- 1:16:25Strike two, call.
- 1:16:26One ball and two strikes.
- 1:16:29Because when that pitch came in, Robbie took a double take on it.
- 1:16:42The man at ballpark.
- 1:16:44Tremendous acreage there on the outfield, except out of the foul line.
- 1:16:49One and two count.
- 1:16:50Runners at first and second with nobody out.
- 1:16:52Here's the two-strike that's swung on, driven down the right-field line foul.
- 1:16:57Five or six feet outside the line.
- 1:16:59Albie Pearson, as it comes off the wall, makes a pick-up of it.
- 1:17:04So you can put your heart back in its right spot now, and it's a one and two count.
- 1:17:09Minnesota nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 1:17:11We're there in the last half of the fifth.
- 1:17:13Here we are, the last of the third.
- 1:17:19Brooks Robinson, slice one, shot one, foul down the right-field line.
- 1:17:25One and two on it.
- 1:17:34Eli getting aside from Bell-Rise.
- 1:17:37Look toward the lead man again, and the pitch swung on.
- 1:17:40Here's the fly ball out in the right field.
- 1:17:42The wind is blowing into the foul territory, and it's going to be fouled out of the right-field line.
- 1:17:48Missed the foul ball by about 25 or 30 feet, dropping up into the seats.
- 1:17:53And it's still one and two.
- 1:17:59And Robinson had that more toward the straightaway mark when it was initially hit.
- 1:18:04That wind blowing, it probably would have wrapped it right around the foul pole.
- 1:18:12One and two count on Brooks Robinson.
- 1:18:17He made a great play earlier on a hard smash at the third base side off the bat of Aspermoney.
- 1:18:27Ran at second.
- 1:18:29Snyder was on it first.
- 1:18:31Here's the two-strike pitch coming in.
- 1:18:33A lot of fun in it, and didn't miss by more than a hair there.
- 1:18:38Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:18:40Too high in the pen, you know, the Play-Dumb Fire Steven.
- 1:18:55Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:19:00Runners at first and second here with nobody out.
- 1:19:06Gerber to the stretch again, and the pitch coming in. Curve up over his head.
- 1:19:10Ball three, three and two.
- 1:19:12The on-neck man is Jen Teal.
- 1:19:16So this is a noisy point in today's game with these fans.
- 1:19:22Watching Gerber go through a three and two count on Robinson.
- 1:19:35Manoeuvres away from the bag at second.
- 1:19:37Snyder jumps out to a longer lead at first.
- 1:19:41So here's the free-two-and-over coming in.
- 1:19:43Fastball's put on grab on the third base side.
- 1:19:45Yost over to second for one. Relay to first, and it's a wide caught.
- 1:19:48Away from Pazusky, tries to find the ball to run short.
- 1:19:53Robinson meanwhile stayed at first.
- 1:19:55The throw by Aspermoney will draw an error.
- 1:19:58It was down in the dirt.
- 1:20:00Pazusky tried to make a swipe pick-up of it.
- 1:20:04And as it went off his glove, high up in the air, it dropped behind him and flew wheeled around like a man in a revolving door trying to find that one.
- 1:20:12So it's going to be an error for Aspermoney. No RBI.
- 1:20:19Jackie Brandt came in to score.
- 1:20:21Snyder was forced at second base.
- 1:20:26As Eddie Yost made the pick-up of the ball to begin with, the ground ball, and got it to Aspermoney to force out Snyder.
- 1:20:33Here is Gentile. Here's a swing and a foul off behind the plate.
- 1:20:37The score now, the Angels 7, Baltimore 2, in the last half of the third.
- 1:20:44So Baltimore, here is Gentile. Here's a swing and a foul off behind the plate.
- 1:20:49The score now, the Angels 7, Baltimore 2, in the last half of the third.
- 1:20:56So Baltimore trying to chip away here at the Angel lead that at one time was 7-0.
- 1:21:05The Angels were 3 on the first and 4 in the second.
- 1:21:11Gentile had a base hit.
- 1:21:14Line 1, Shrockley to right field leading off the second.
- 1:21:17One strike fits to him.
- 1:21:19Snyder by Gerber, half a bit high. One ball and one strike.
- 1:21:25Brooks Robinson is on the first.
- 1:21:35With one out and they pitch to Gentile, ground ball off of the second base side.
- 1:21:40Aspermoney over to second for one and Raquel had the leap up over the sliding Brooks Robinson.
- 1:21:45So no possibility of the relay to first. They get the fourth play at second base.
- 1:21:50So Brooks Robinson, fourth stop from second baseman Aspermoney to the shortstop, Prissy Raquel.
- 1:21:57Gentile reaches on a field of choice and here's the catcher, Gus Priandos.
- 1:22:02At the end of five at Yankee Stadium, Minnesota nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:22:09Gus Priandos hit one right on the nose but the wind held the ball up in left field in the second inning
- 1:22:18and it was an easy catch for Bob Serr.
- 1:22:21Step second by Gerber and they pitch on the way to Priandos, down low and outside.
- 1:22:26Stopped by Rice to make it ball one.
- 1:22:34One nothing cut on Gus Priandos.
- 1:22:39Jim Gentile moving away from the bag at first.
- 1:22:43Curve ball to Priandos, low and outside and it's one ball to one strike.
- 1:22:51Stuller started out of the Yankee organization and he's a big one and a very likeable one too.
- 1:23:02One ball and one strike on Gus and they're delivering to the fastball from a long post deep out of the right field
- 1:23:08breaking back for it, Albie Turson back near the fence.
- 1:23:13Priandos gave Ron a tremendous ride, 375 feet away but hauled on by Albie Turson
- 1:23:21and that's all she wrote in the third inning for the Orioles.
- 1:23:25One run, one hit, one error and one man left hits an earned run.
- 1:23:33And the score at the end, three full innings to play, this is Don Walsh with Bob Kelly and Steve Bailey.
- 1:23:38Our Los Angeles Angels 7 and the Baltimore Orioles 2.
- 1:23:43Well fans, this portion of the opening game of the new Los Angeles Angels is brought to you by Folgers Coffee,
- 1:23:49the top selling coffee in the West.
- 1:23:51The Folger people asked me to tell you fans how happy they are to take part in bringing you these play-by-play broadcasts
- 1:23:58of all the Angels games throughout the 1961 season both at home and on the road.
- 1:24:03And because a lot of you Angel fans are already Folgers Coffee fans,
- 1:24:07this is our way of saying thanks for helping Folgers become number one in coffee sales wherever it's sold.
- 1:24:14It's also Folgers way of saying welcome from an old timer in the West to a newcomer.
- 1:24:19We're sure the Angels will soon become a real Western tradition
- 1:24:23just as Folgers Coffee has become a Western tradition for over 100 years.
- 1:24:28So from now until next fall, it's play ball with the Angels and with Folgers Coffee,
- 1:24:34the one coffee that's mountain grown in the rich soil of the Highland Air
- 1:24:39where conditions are just right for growing coffee at its finest.
- 1:24:43Remember when I say coffee, I mean Folgers.
- 1:24:50Now let's take a look at the scores of other games in progress.
- 1:24:53Milwaukee and St. Louis are scoreless at the end of three.
- 1:24:56Brollier against Spons.
- 1:24:58Cincinnati, Chicago, 1-1 at the end of two and a half.
- 1:25:01Hobby against O'Toole.
- 1:25:03For more play-by-play, the Angels leading 7-2 on the top of the fourth.
- 1:25:07Here is Bob Kelly.
- 1:25:08All right, thank you, Steve. And here's the Angel pitcher Eli Gerber, right-handed batter.
- 1:25:13Bothered into a fourth play in a futile attempt to sacrifice the second inning.
- 1:25:17West-stock for third Baltimore pitcher, right-handed Lamont works,
- 1:25:21and he tries to book this one, foul-fips a fastball into the dirt behind strike one.
- 1:25:26The score here at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland, is the Angels 7 and the Baltimore Orioles 2.
- 1:25:35The Angels batting in the top half of the fourth inning.
- 1:25:38The Angel pitcher up here for the second time at bat this afternoon, Eli Gerber.
- 1:25:43Now the mound for Baltimore works again, and the fastball is wide.
- 1:25:49So the count level's off here, ball one and strike one.
- 1:25:52You cannot assume a double play in scoring, and thus,
- 1:25:56Baltimore's run of the third inning was scored as an earned run.
- 1:26:01Now the next pitch, and it is high and outside, ball two, the count to Gerber, ball two, strike one.
- 1:26:09Stock pitched one inning prior to this one in the third.
- 1:26:13Hit a batter, but got out of that because of double play, so faced only three men.
- 1:26:20The Angels leading by a score of 7 to 2.
- 1:26:23Here's the 2-1 pitch, swings a high fly to deep left field.
- 1:26:26Gene Stevens drifting way back, and he's got it way back near the screen.
- 1:26:31Back pile of the Baltimore bullpets.
- 1:26:33So Gerber put a lot of work behind that one, and had it not been going right into a stiff wind,
- 1:26:38we'd have the first home run hit by a pitcher in the American League this season.
- 1:26:43But it's only an out, one down, brings down the top of the Angels' batting order,
- 1:26:47third baseman Eddie Yost, two bats right.
- 1:26:53Yost popped the shortstop on the first inning, drew a walk in the second.
- 1:26:56He walked 26 times this spring in the exhibition games.
- 1:27:00So one out, nobody on here.
- 1:27:01The Angels lead 7 to 2.
- 1:27:03Stock to right-hander, winds and delivers, and the fastball is right down the plate.
- 1:27:07A close, strike one.
- 1:27:13They're shaving Yost a little bit around to the right for a late swinger.
- 1:27:16The next pitch, fastball, right down there again for a close, strike two.
- 1:27:21So Eddie's looking for a couple of good pitchers.
- 1:27:23Red Crest coaching a third, Bob Elliott at first.
- 1:27:29One out, nobody on.
- 1:27:31On to the count of Eddie Yost.
- 1:27:32Now, Blake Fitch, he's strong on a change-up curve and misses strike three.
- 1:27:37So stock strikes out Eddie Yost on three pitches.
- 1:27:43Two down, an out for the Angels in the fourth inning.
- 1:27:47They scored three runs in the first, a two-on-one home run by Kluszewski
- 1:27:50and a single at home run by Serb and got four runs the second inning.
- 1:28:14And got four runs the second inning.
- 1:28:17Fitch drove in a run with a spring over on Kluszewski,
- 1:28:20so he hit his second back-to-back homer with two on.
- 1:28:24Here's the wind-up of the pitch to Kenny Aspermati on a check to swing and took one high.
- 1:28:30Kenny was called out on strikes the first inning,
- 1:28:33hit into a fourth play, robbed of a base hit on a tremendous stop
- 1:28:37by the class of third baseman of the Birds, Brooks Robinson, in the second inning.
- 1:28:44And the ball won, no strikes, Fitch and it's wide ball two.
- 1:28:50The Minnesota Twins failed to score the top of the sixth inning at Yankee Stadium
- 1:28:54after five and a half thirds.
- 1:28:56Minnesota nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:28:59Here at Baltimore, Los Angeles leading the Orioles 7-2,
- 1:29:04two outs and out of the top of the fourth inning, two-nothing.
- 1:29:06The count here to Aspermati, the next pitch.
- 1:29:09He looks for the good one, right over.
- 1:29:13Fast-breaking syncopation around the knees, ball two, strike one.
- 1:29:21Short stop, Bronte Hanson playing deep in the hole.
- 1:29:24Third baseman Robinson deep for third, close to the line,
- 1:29:27swings the ground ball through to left field for a base hit.
- 1:29:30Right through the gap there, fielded by Stephens,
- 1:29:32goes into the short stop, Hanson cuts off,
- 1:29:34and there's a run around here as Aspermati gets the fifth angel hit of the afternoon
- 1:29:39on his first year of the season.
- 1:29:41Rounds of short single between the short stop Hanson
- 1:29:44and the third baseman Brooks Robinson,
- 1:29:46and that brings down little Albie Pearson.
- 1:29:50The mighty might walked on four pitches in the first inning,
- 1:29:54and he lined a single to center field in the second,
- 1:29:57so he has scored two runs and driven in one.
- 1:30:02Pearson went down the line here to talk to the third base coach, Rob Kress.
- 1:30:06So the angels out in front here, 7-2, have a run around first
- 1:30:09and Aspermati, and the little left-handed batter Albert Pearson,
- 1:30:13the right fielder, stands in.
- 1:30:15Stop, right-handed rebound for the Orioles, stretches, looks at Aspermati, pitches,
- 1:30:19and gets away from the catcher, wild pitch or a pass ball, Aspermati going down to second,
- 1:30:24rounds the bag, goes back in there, and I believe he's going to be charged
- 1:30:27with a pass ball against Triandos.
- 1:30:30A high fast ball, we've got away from the catcher,
- 1:30:32so Aspermati moves into scoring position.
- 1:30:40And they caught the Albert Pearson ball well.
- 1:30:46Now Steve and I have received a wire from a good friend of ours,
- 1:30:49a popular Los Angeles disc jockey,
- 1:30:52Dick Whittinghouse says, we'll be carrying a small transistor around Lakeside.
- 1:30:56It's a big deal for you guys, make it live.
- 1:30:58Good luck with it.
- 1:31:02All right, Pearson stands in, and now we have stopped taking a lot of time.
- 1:31:07Albert steps out the block back in, pretty close to that plate.
- 1:31:10The little guy with a squared stance,
- 1:31:12running around second two away here for the Angels.
- 1:31:15The stretcher pass stopped, the next pitch to Albie,
- 1:31:17takes the good letter half pass ball for a close, strike one,
- 1:31:20more winter and strike one.
- 1:31:23This is the start of a 13 games and 15 days road trip for the Angels.
- 1:31:28This two game series will wind up tomorrow night with a night game,
- 1:31:32which will be televised on KHJ TV Channel 9,
- 1:31:35as well as broadcast on this station.
- 1:31:37There's a change up pitch and a cause strike right into the knees.
- 1:31:41So Albie looks at the good one, ball one and strike two.
- 1:31:44After tomorrow night's game, we'll have a couple of days off.
- 1:31:48Not a single game in Boston Saturday afternoon,
- 1:31:50followed by a Sunday afternoon double-hunter at Boston against the Red Sox.
- 1:31:54One and two, the count to Pearson, Ash Pumati at second, two down.
- 1:31:57The next pitch is high and away, fastball, ball two, two and two.
- 1:32:05Eddie Matthews hit a home run for the Braves in the bottom of the fourth,
- 1:32:08cutting off Ernie Burial, and at the end of the fourth in that game of the last league,
- 1:32:12Milwaukee leads the Cardinals one to nothing.
- 1:32:16Ash Pumati at second, two down here, Pearson the batter, two to the count,
- 1:32:20a stretch of high stock and a pitch.
- 1:32:22Slings a slow bouncer, foul off the right side, hit that one just off the skin of the knuckles.
- 1:32:27And the Cardinals hit ball two and strike two.
- 1:32:32Following the weekend series of Boston, there'll be on Monday off,
- 1:32:35the Angels then play three straight day games against the Yankees at the Yankee Stadium.
- 1:32:39Then over to Detroit, the three games,
- 1:32:42followed by a pair of night games against the White Sox in Chicago,
- 1:32:46and then for the big day at Wrigley Field, Los Angeles,
- 1:32:48American League Baseball arrives, the Angels and the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:32:53Two to the count here to Albie Pearson.
- 1:32:56West back to the stretch, checks that one,
- 1:32:58Ash Pumati with a good lead at second, a pitch way inside at low and almost got my friendos.
- 1:33:04So a forecut on Pearson, ball three, strike two.
- 1:33:09The four-count was the 15-game winner in each of the last two seasons.
- 1:33:12Started for Baltimore, but was hit hard.
- 1:33:15His wildest and two-hump runs by Kwaszynski and saves home run.
- 1:33:19Spelled his downfall.
- 1:33:21The Angels leading here by a score of 7-2.
- 1:33:25Three and two, the full count pitch coming up the stretch, and here it is.
- 1:33:28Swings, there's a high fly at the shallow right.
- 1:33:31Going back to the second baseman, Bridging,
- 1:33:33side of the right fielder in, and he makes the catch to retire the side.
- 1:33:38And the fourth inning for the Angels, no runs, one hit, no errors.
- 1:33:41One man left on base after three and a half minutes of play.
- 1:33:44The score is Los Angeles 7 and Baltimore 2.
- 1:33:49Fans in the Republic of El Salvador, there's a city called San Vicente,
- 1:33:54famous for hot springs, geysers, and a volcano.
- 1:33:58On the slopes of this volcano, you can see vast orchards of delicate trees,
- 1:34:03each bearing its own rich body of coffee.
- 1:34:06San Vicente is one of the world's outstanding areas for mountain-drawn coffee.
- 1:34:10And here is where coffee is being grown for the Folger brand.
- 1:34:14Mount San Vicente is one of the many Folger mountains where the soil is rich,
- 1:34:19and the high land air is pure, and conditions are just right for growing coffee at its finest.
- 1:34:25Here the coffee bean develops its deepest flavor.
- 1:34:28Throughout the world, there are other mountains like San Vicente with a special gift for growing coffee.
- 1:34:35Mount Diego in Guatemala, Mount Yorizu in Costa Rica, Mount Orzaba in Mexico,
- 1:34:41and Mount Mauna Loa in our new state, Hawaii.
- 1:34:45All growing coffee for the Folger brand.
- 1:34:48Premium mountain-drawn coffee with deep flavor and rich aroma.
- 1:34:52That's why when I say coffee, I mean Folger.
- 1:35:01Eli Gover, ready to go to work here in the bottom of the forefooting.
- 1:35:05The angels starting pitcher has allowed two runs, one of them unearned, given up three hits.
- 1:35:11He has blocked two batters, struck out nobody as yet, and Ronnie Henson,
- 1:35:17Baltimore's rookie of the year in the national league last year,
- 1:35:20their fine shortstop and a right-handed batter steps in.
- 1:35:23Here's the lineup by Eli and the pitch.
- 1:35:25Swings on a second ball and falls into the dirt behind, rolling back to the backstop, strike one.
- 1:35:30Henson topped the ball and bounced out in front of the plate and was thrown out by pitcher Gover,
- 1:35:42his first time at bat in the second inning.
- 1:35:45Now the lineup for the next pitch for Henson, and he takes a lineup pitch outside,
- 1:35:50all one and strike one.
- 1:35:58Henson will be followed by Gene Stevens and Mark Brady.
- 1:36:01Now the next pitch.
- 1:36:03Swings a slow bouncer down toward third.
- 1:36:05Yost charges a grab that throws to Kluszewski, and he digs it out of the dirt to be out.
- 1:36:10From Henson out of there, third baseman Yost to first baseman Kluszewski,
- 1:36:14as Eli, keeping that ball down low, got Henson to the top of it.
- 1:36:22That softball warming up in the Baltimore bullpen, and here is Gene Stevens.
- 1:36:30Big, tall, left-handed batting left-hieler, walked through the second inning.
- 1:36:35Gover, the right-hander, winds and delivers, and it's a fastball, a little high,
- 1:36:39and getting away from the catcher, Joe Rice, all one.
- 1:36:43We received a lot of wires here on our broadcast.
- 1:36:48Congratulations on opening day coming in loud and clear in the Great San Joaquin Valley.
- 1:36:53Signed, Mr. Bill Sinclair, general manager of KNGS, Radio and Hanford.
- 1:36:59Ball one, the county, one out, nobody on. Stevens waits for the next pitch.
- 1:37:03He swings, laid on it, fastball, as Gover threw his fastest pitch of the afternoon,
- 1:37:08and Stevens swung away, laid on it.
- 1:37:10Ball one and strike one.
- 1:37:13Now Brady, the second baseman of the Orioles on deck.
- 1:37:16Here's Gover's next pitch, and it's a letter pitch lowed inside for ball two.
- 1:37:21Third baseman Eddie Yost is playing up on the corner of the grass.
- 1:37:24The outfield is fairly straight.
- 1:37:26He had just slapped into the right, playing Stevens as a full hitter, but not too much.
- 1:37:34Two and one, the count.
- 1:37:35The next pitch to him, and he arches away from an inside pitch down by the kneecaps.
- 1:37:40Ball three, three and one.
- 1:37:42The score of Los Angeles Angels seven and the Baltimore Orioles two.
- 1:37:46The Angels scored three in the first, four in the second.
- 1:37:49Baltimore got one in the second and one in the third.
- 1:37:52Three and one, the county, with one out, nobody on for the Orioles.
- 1:37:58So Gover, behind the cap, pups, kicks, pitches, and he walks him high and outside.
- 1:38:03Ball four.
- 1:38:06Let's pause now for station identification.
- 1:38:08This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 1:38:11This is Action Radio, KMPC Los Angeles.
- 1:38:16And this is Johnny Grant reminding you that for good music and complete traffic information,
- 1:38:21it's the Freeway Club every afternoon on KMPC, 710 on everybody's dial.
- 1:38:28Downwells and Steve Bailey from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland.
- 1:38:33Opening day of the 1961 American League baseball season for the Los Angeles Angels and the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:38:40In the center of the batter's box is the right-handed batting second baseman of the Orioles,
- 1:38:44Ma Breeding, with one on first and one away.
- 1:38:47Here's Gover's pitch, playing the high pop up behind first base.
- 1:38:50Asked for money moving over near the line, and he's got it for the often fair territory
- 1:38:54by a couple of feet back on the outfield grass and short right.
- 1:38:58Stevens plotting back into first base, and there's two down.
- 1:39:02The pitchers do up here.
- 1:39:08That one giving up to Stevens was the third pass yielded this afternoon by Eli Gover,
- 1:39:13and we're looking for a pitch batter to crown here.
- 1:39:21Al Allison, one of the big swuggers, will be appearing with the Minnesota Twins on opening day of Wrigley Field,
- 1:39:26April 27th.
- 1:39:28Now, he's hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning, 12 Minnesota, 24th,
- 1:39:33who gives Minnesota at least one to nothing lead to the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:39:42Earl Robinson coming to bat.
- 1:39:46Earl Robinson coming up here to bat for the pitchers.
- 1:39:50Let's start.
- 1:39:55Two down, the angels leading 7-2, runner on first from the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:40:05Here's the pitch to Robinson, and he checks his way and takes the good one.
- 1:40:09Fast-breaking pitch right in there for a call strike one.
- 1:40:13Robinson's the fellow that you may recall out there on the coast.
- 1:40:16He was found for one of the largest bonuses in Dodger history.
- 1:40:19He was purchased from the Dodgers this past December.
- 1:40:22Right-handed batter standing in, strike one to count, Goebel works again.
- 1:40:26A little pitch is a little outside, way side, ball and the count levels.
- 1:40:30At ball one in, strike one.
- 1:40:35This is the second pitch batter that has appeared up here this afternoon for Baltimore.
- 1:40:40Dilley, that is the pitcher in the second inning and popped up.
- 1:40:43Now the stretch.
- 1:40:44A one-one pitch to Robinson, swings a high five, center field.
- 1:40:48That started back, moved right into his original position, and he's got it to the up to retire the side.
- 1:40:53Robinson flies to hunt.
- 1:40:55And in the fourth inning for the birds, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:41:00One man left on base at the end of the four, the score, the angels 7 and the Orioles 2.
- 1:41:06When today's first ball was pitched, baseball's most historic event of more than a half a century was created.
- 1:41:12Los Angeles in the American League, but that's only half the story.
- 1:41:15Even greater will be the red carpet day of all days when American League baseball comes to Los Angeles at Wrigley Field
- 1:41:21on Thursday afternoon, April 27th, against Flugger's Harmon Killibrew, Jim Lemon, Bob Allison, and the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:41:29And now your red carpet to enjoy real baseball at its first with angels season tickets becomes a reality.
- 1:41:36There are tickets for the Daylight 21 and Weekender Plan.
- 1:41:40Get them now for the exciting action you'll want to see at easy to reach Wrigley Field, where it's comfortable and every seat is a good one.
- 1:41:47Either write or phone Wrigley Field or visit the park in person for your ticket.
- 1:41:52The address is 435 East 42nd Place, the telephone Adams 24761.
- 1:41:58And for tucks and convenience, use the easy to pay method, your Bank of America.
- 1:42:04Well, the angels come to bat here in the fifth inning against the fifth pitcher, the fourth pitcher used by Baltimore, Billy Heft.
- 1:42:16We'd like to check over the scores that he had to be done.
- 1:42:19They have a convertible in the outfield that brings the relief pitchers in, and since Heft is now just walking toward the mound to take his warm-up pitches,
- 1:42:28it gives us an opportunity to check the scores of other games.
- 1:42:32Bob Allison's home run in the top of the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie, and Minnesota is out instead of the Yankees at least one-nothing, fighting for it against Pete Ramos.
- 1:42:43Cleveland leads Detroit 7-2 after 5-1-1.
- 1:42:46Jim Ferry started for Cleveland.
- 1:42:48Jim Benning started for Detroit.
- 1:42:50Regan in the second, Davihue in the sixth.
- 1:42:52Kansas City leads Boston 2-1 after 3-1-1.
- 1:42:55Ray Herbert against Bill Maugham Bouquet.
- 1:42:58In the National League, there are three openers this afternoon and one tonight.
- 1:43:04In the games in progress, Cincinnati leads Chicago 4-1 after 3-1-1.
- 1:43:08Hoppy against O'Toole, home runs by Robinson, Rodgers, and Post.
- 1:43:12Post hit his with two-ons.
- 1:43:15Milwaukee leads St. Louis 1-0 at the end of 4-1-1.
- 1:43:18Eddie Matthews hit a home run off Ernie Grolio in the fourth inning.
- 1:43:21Warren Spahn pitching for Milwaukee.
- 1:43:23Pittsburgh and San Francisco play this afternoon.
- 1:43:26Dodgers and Phillies tonight.
- 1:43:28All right, here's Kel.
- 1:43:30That is the fourth Baltimore pitcher of the day, left-hander Billy Heff.
- 1:43:33And he will face Ted Kwasuski, who has had two home runs,
- 1:43:37mighty blast into the right field stands, accounting for five RBI this afternoon.
- 1:43:43So the Angels lead 7-2 on our left-hander Billy Heff now on the mound for Baltimore.
- 1:43:48And some dust got into the eyes of the batter, Kwasuski,
- 1:43:52as that wind swirls up that dirt from the skin part of the diamond.
- 1:43:56A lot heft into his windup.
- 1:43:58Here's the pitch to Big Clue.
- 1:44:00That fooled him.
- 1:44:02Three-quarter delivery curveball breaking right over the heart of the plate.
- 1:44:05He backs away, and it was a good pitch.
- 1:44:07A call strike one to Kwasuski.
- 1:44:09Fourth man in the Angel batting order here in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:44:12Kwasuski will be followed by Bob Serve and Kenny Hunt.
- 1:44:14Now the windup of the next pitch.
- 1:44:16Swings a slow buster to the left side.
- 1:44:18Nice down of Brooks Robinson. Makes the play easily over to Jen Teal to the out.
- 1:44:22Robinson to Jen Teal, third to first, one down.
- 1:44:27Well, they finally got Big Clue out of there.
- 1:44:32Here's Bob Serve, who hit his 96th home run of his career.
- 1:44:39Needs just four more to reach the 100 mark in home runs.
- 1:44:43Hit that one with nobody out of the first, struck out of the second.
- 1:44:46The southpaw helps work, Sam.
- 1:44:48The pitch is a call strike from the outside corner just above the knees.
- 1:44:52One out, nobody out.
- 1:44:53The Angels at bat here, top of the fifth inning, at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland.
- 1:45:00The playing serve for a straightaway hitter, and the infield is very deep for him.
- 1:45:05The ex-Shanky slugger. Now heft.
- 1:45:07Lines and pitches again.
- 1:45:09That one hit the dirt before it reached the plate.
- 1:45:11Very low, ball one, ball one, and strike one.
- 1:45:16Heft was not afforded too much of an opportunity to work often last year.
- 1:45:22Here's the next pitch to serve.
- 1:45:24Always swinging that little pitch and missed it.
- 1:45:27Billy Heft really pulled the chain on that one, and it's ball one and strike two to serve.
- 1:45:32The Angels got three runs in the first inning, all produced on home runs,
- 1:45:38and four in the second, three of them on Kluszewski's second homer.
- 1:45:42Baltimore getting another run in the second, adding another one in the third.
- 1:45:45Now the pitch to serve. Strike three, swinging on a fastball.
- 1:45:48It struck him out.
- 1:45:53So two outs, none on, and that brings on the Angels' center fielder, Kenny Hunt.
- 1:45:58The draft confirmed the New York Yankees.
- 1:46:00He batted 273 last year at Richmond.
- 1:46:04He walked in the first inning today, was hit by a pitch ball in the third,
- 1:46:08so this is his first official time at bat.
- 1:46:10Heft, the left-hander, ready to work into this right-handed batter.
- 1:46:13Hunt swings on a good ball and misses it.
- 1:46:16Strike one.
- 1:46:21Two outs, none on, the infield and outfield back and straight away.
- 1:46:25Heft into his lineup.
- 1:46:27A fastball is low and inside.
- 1:46:29He's got levels at ball one and strike one.
- 1:46:37Little Albie Pearson's done a good job today, drove in a run, also got a walk.
- 1:46:41Albie's playing his 300th major league game.
- 1:46:47Now the windup, man.
- 1:46:48Mike's pitch, the one-one pitch to Hunt, lets up and takes the pitch low.
- 1:46:53He starts the swing, checked it.
- 1:46:57Another changeup pitch, ball two, strike one here to Kenny Hunt.
- 1:47:02They're shading him a little bit around to the right for a late swinger.
- 1:47:05That's because of the wind, which is very strong from the left-field corner
- 1:47:08or toward the right-field corner.
- 1:47:10Now the two-one pitch to Kenny swings as a high fly into the shallow right center,
- 1:47:16leading the second baseman going back, the right fielder coming in.
- 1:47:19A collision there, but it's an out.
- 1:47:22As the right fielder, Snyder, collided with Reading.
- 1:47:27Hunt went all the way around to third base, but the ball was caught out there.
- 1:47:33I think it was caught by Reading, the second baseman.
- 1:47:39So that retires the side, three up and three down.
- 1:47:42In the fifth inning, the Angels, nothing across after four and a half innings.
- 1:47:46The score remains Los Angeles 7 and Baltimore 2.

- 1:48:45Please allow a week for delivery.
- 1:48:48And just remember, when I say copy, I mean Folger's.
- 1:48:56Eli Gerber ready to face the top of the Baltimore batting order
- 1:48:59here in the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:49:01It will be Jackie Brandt, Russ Snyder, Brooks Robinson.
- 1:49:07Gerber in four innings has allowed two runs, one of them unearned,
- 1:49:11given up three hits and walked three batters.
- 1:49:17Now Brandt steps out of the batter's box as the big gust of wind swept through.
- 1:49:23Now he's back in, a right-handed batter.
- 1:49:25Here's Gerber's pitch to him and it's a little wide at the waist.
- 1:49:28Ball one.
- 1:49:30Brandt has two for two today, both of them singles to left field.
- 1:49:34Pull that ball in the first-hand third innings.
- 1:49:38Shortstop Raquel playing very deep, but he oh-stop a bit even with the bag,
- 1:49:42and there's a good ball right in there, just above the knees.
- 1:49:44He looks at a good pitch.
- 1:49:46Here's a ball-winning strike one on Jackie Brandt, the Baltimore center fielder.
- 1:49:50The score of the Angels seven and the Orioles two in the last of the fifth inning.
- 1:49:54Now the pitch, an overhand curve that really pulled him right in there.
- 1:49:58He ducked away and that ball really broke.
- 1:50:03That would have rolled right off the tabletop and the count is ball-winning strike two.
- 1:50:09Nobody out, nobody out for the Orioles last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:50:13Gerber out in front with the count delivers, strike three called.
- 1:50:16He looks at a good one.
- 1:50:17Fast breaking curve right over the outer half of the plate, waist-high.
- 1:50:21And there is Eli Gerber's first strikeout of the day in the season.
- 1:50:28The one-off of the Orioles here in the last of the fifth inning,
- 1:50:30and it brings on the left-handed batting right fielder Russ Snyder,
- 1:50:35headed to a fourth play on a grounded ask for money in the first inning and walked in the third.
- 1:50:39So he's 0-1 today, now to 260 for Kansas City last year.
- 1:50:43Gerber works, strike called.
- 1:50:45He ducked away from what he thought was an inside pitch,
- 1:50:48but let her high right over the inside corner.
- 1:50:55One out, then on, strike one with the count.
- 1:50:57Gerber's next pitch, strike called, another big breaking curve ball.
- 1:51:02Waist-high, right in there, good pitch.
- 1:51:05So Snyder's looked at a couple of good ones there,
- 1:51:07and Gerber has the big edge on him in the count, 0-2 on Decker's Brooks Robinson.
- 1:51:12Here's Gerber's next pitch.
- 1:51:14A waste of the fastball, and it wasn't too wide, just a little outside.
- 1:51:18Now one, strike two.
- 1:51:25Playing Snyder for a straightaway hitter, now the pitch, a lot of pitch, way outside, low ball too, 2-2.
- 1:51:31Rice Shogg coming out in front of the plate, countered Del Rice, outing something to Eli.
- 1:51:36Gerber before today had pitched only three innings against Baltimore.
- 1:51:45He shakes off two signs from Rice.
- 1:51:47Now he's ready for the 2-2 delivery, and here it is.
- 1:51:50Wings a line drive down the right field line, foul, right at the corner of the box seats.
- 1:51:56So the count owes it 2-2.
- 1:51:58Time for the world's shortest commercial.
- 1:52:00Listen carefully, when I say coffee, I mean Folgers.
- 1:52:07So the count owes it ball two, strike two on the Baltimore right fielder, Russ Snyder.
- 1:52:15In tomorrow night's game here, which will be telecast as well as radio broadcast on this station,
- 1:52:22we'll see Baltimore's fine young left fielder, Steve Bubber, going against the veteran right-hander, Ned Garber, the Angels.
- 1:52:29Here's the lineup again in the 2-2 pitch.
- 1:52:31Slaying the ball, splashed out the left field, served by getting over, and he's there.
- 1:52:36Just had to take a few steps.
- 1:52:39So Snyder out on a high liner, which served the left fielder, or the Angels, caught over in left center.
- 1:52:44Two outs and on, and the batter is the third baseman for Baltimore, Brooks Robinson.
- 1:52:52Robbie grounded into a double play on the first of him, hit into a fourth play on the third.
- 1:53:01Bubber, the right-hander, kicks and delivers.
- 1:53:03Pass ball, swing on a fly ball, and off the deep right center, Huff going way back, way back, and he can't get it.
- 1:53:09He missed a little bit.
- 1:53:11There's the batter going into the second base, standing up, two base hit.
- 1:53:14Huff had a lot of room out there, and Chris was diving at him.
- 1:53:17But Huff started to stop, stopped on the ball, and it dropped over his head and rolled to the screen for a two base hit.
- 1:53:26It was misjudged by the Angels center fielder, Huff, and he goes out to double for Robinson and brings up Jim Gentile.
- 1:53:38So there is Baltimore's first extra base hit of the day.
- 1:53:42Jim Gentile, who is singled and hit a no-force play, comes to bat.
- 1:53:47First baseman left-handed batter hit 292 last year.
- 1:53:50Dangerous man hit 21 homers and drove in 96 runs.
- 1:53:54Here's the first pitch going, swing for the high fly ball out into short center field.
- 1:54:00Raquel Ascomati, a hunt ball back there.
- 1:54:03Raquel, a short stop, takes it in, not retires the side.
- 1:54:06Fifth inning, Baltimore.
- 1:54:08One runs, one hit, no errors, one man left on base, and the Orioles have stranded five.
- 1:54:13We move into the sixth with a score of the Angels seven, Baltimore two.
- 1:54:18Today Brazil is the land of boom towns in the state of Paraná, Brazil.
- 1:54:23The towns are teeming with people.
- 1:54:25It's almost like the California Gold Rush, in fact.
- 1:54:28But in Paraná, Brazil, it's not gold thereafter. This is coffee.
- 1:54:32Here in this pioneer land, the fertile soil has made possible a great industry.
- 1:54:37Millions of young, vigorous coffee trees have been planted,
- 1:54:40and sprawling plantations cover the valleys and hills.
- 1:54:43In this land of rich soil and clean air, the yield is big, and the coffee beans are deep flavored and pure.
- 1:54:50Coffee beans, like those from Paraná, are blended to create instant Folgers coffee,
- 1:54:55the one instant coffee people drink for a reason other than convenience alone, and that reason is flavor.
- 1:55:01Instant Folgers coffee, a modern achievement in flavor,
- 1:55:04and the result of over a century of experience in blending and roasting fine coffee.
- 1:55:09Rich, deep flavored coffee beans, like those grown in Paraná, Brazil.
- 1:55:14Another reason why, when I say instant coffee, I mean instant Folgers.
- 1:55:19...available at the Schumpen Hotel, your regular business hours.
- 1:55:24At Yankee Stadium in New York, the Minnesota Twins have knocked one forward out of the box in the seventh inning.
- 1:55:29They're still batting.
- 1:55:31We know they have at least one run in on Bob Anderson's one run,
- 1:55:35and Terry has come out of the pitch in the seventh inning for the Yankees.
- 1:55:39Here it is Fritz Brichel, a little shortstop at the Eagles, right-handed batter, standing here,
- 1:55:44the left-hander Billy Heft, going into this double-pumping motion, delivers.
- 1:55:47Sidearm pitch is a strike, catches the outer half of the plate, midway between the belt and knees to this little fellow.
- 1:55:53Brichel a 5 foot, 5 and a half inch stockily built shortstop.
- 1:55:58He's going 0 for 2, popped the short, hit into a double play.
- 1:56:01Next pitch to it.
- 1:56:03Checks the swing on a wide fastball.
- 1:56:05For ball one, the count levels here at ball one and strike one in this.
- 1:56:08Over here at Baltimore, the Los Angeles Angels in their first game of the American League,
- 1:56:13leading Baltimore 7-2 in the top of the sixth.
- 1:56:15Now the pitch to Brichel.
- 1:56:17That's a little pitch high and away from him.
- 1:56:19Ball two, two and one.
- 1:56:23Heft sets the Angels down in order.
- 1:56:26They're middle three in the fifth, but he's now facing the tail end of the batting order in the top of the sixth.
- 1:56:31Has a two and one count on Fritz Brichel.
- 1:56:36Here's Heft, winding, delivers.
- 1:56:38Swings laid on a fastball and misses, strike two, two and two.
- 1:56:43Billy Heft did most of his major league pitching for the Detroit Tigers from 1952 to 1959
- 1:56:50when he was traded to Boston and to Baltimore.
- 1:56:53Played with three clubs in 59.
- 1:56:56Here's the 2-2 pitch to Brichel and it's high and away.
- 1:56:58Ball three and a full count, three and two.
- 1:57:08Nobody out and nobody out.
- 1:57:09The Los Angeles Angels in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:57:12Angels getting off to a big early lead.
- 1:57:15Three runs for first and four on the second.
- 1:57:17The base pitch swings.
- 1:57:18There's a ground ball and it's by the shortstop going out to left field for a base hit.
- 1:57:22Fielded by left fielder Stevens.
- 1:57:24Throws in here, it's the Ronnie Hanson and it's the single for Fritz Brichel.
- 1:57:28So there's his first hit of the season.
- 1:57:32The first hit off Billy Heft.
- 1:57:34The Angels sixth hit of the ball game.
- 1:57:37The Orioles have four hits and the batter now is the Angels catcher, Del Wright.
- 1:57:42Del walks in the second, flies to left field in the third.
- 1:57:49Match right, the left fielder Heft looks at the right.
- 1:57:53There's a bunny ball down to the right side.
- 1:57:55Pitcher gets it, looks to second and throws to Jen Heal at first to be able to sacrifice for right.
- 1:58:00Moving Brichy Brichel over to second base.
- 1:58:03So 1-3 on the putout, Pitcher Heft to the first baseman, Jim Jen Heal.
- 1:58:19And now that brings down the Angel pitcher, Eli Gerba.
- 1:58:25Right handed batter, failed in an attempt to sacrifice the second inning and flied very deep to Stevens at left field in the fourth.
- 1:58:32The run out second is Brichel.
- 1:58:34Here's the pitch, mugs the ball to the right side.
- 1:58:36The pitcher gets it and he's going to first and he is out.
- 1:58:41So another sacrifice, Bunt moves Brichel around to third base and brings the top of the batting order up, Eddie Yost.
- 1:58:52So on both those sacrifice, Bunt.
- 1:58:55Pitcher Heal it through to Jen Heal at first.
- 1:58:58Pitcher Heft up here, popped the short, walked to the second and he is struck out swinging in the fourth.
- 1:59:05Angels have a runner at third, two away, and they lead here by a score of 7-2 as they really flex their muscles in the first and second and he's.
- 1:59:14Wazyski and Serb homered in the first.
- 1:59:16Wazyski a three run homer in the second.
- 1:59:19Eddie holds the swing, takes the fastball, low and inside, ball one.
- 1:59:23Minnesota came up with three runs in the top of the seventh, knocking Waddy Ford out of the box and the twins lead the Yankees three to nothing.
- 1:59:31Here's Heft wind up and pitch to Yost and it's in there.
- 1:59:34Slider for a call strike, McCown on Eddie, levels at ball one and strike one.
- 1:59:42Yost about a 260 last year.
- 1:59:47Brichel over on third.
- 1:59:48Now the left-hander Heft works again and a fastball's a little high and tight to him, ball two, strike one.
- 2:00:05We're on third, two down, now the pitch.
- 2:00:08A little pitch and a good run and he looks down in the outside corner waist high, ball two, strike two.
- 2:00:15Walking into our Golden West Broadcasting booth up here at Memorial Stadium.
- 2:00:19One of our sponsors is Mr. Joe Grisadek, president of the Falstaff Brewing Company.
- 2:00:23Now here's a strike three, this is a good one.
- 2:00:26Good ball in there at the knees.
- 2:00:28The left returners to the side of the sixth inning for the Angels.
- 2:00:31No runs, one hit and no errors, one left out.
- 2:00:33It'll be in the final of an half.
- 2:00:35The score remains, Los Angeles seven and the Baltimore Orioles two.
- 2:00:42The Angels seven and the Orioles two, opening day at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland, cold and windy.
- 2:00:49Here's Gerber's next pitch, a change of three ball inside.
- 2:00:53Took something off that one, ball one and strike one.
- 2:00:57Triangles will be followed by the shortstop Ronnie Henson and then the left fielder Gene Stevens.
- 2:01:04Gerber's next pitch is a little high outside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:01:13Gerber's been in there since the start, pitched five innings, has allowed the two runs, one of those was unheard.
- 2:01:20He's given up four hits, walked three batters and struck out one.
- 2:01:24Artie Lye ready for the two on delivery to Triangles, brings a high pop-up over near second base.
- 2:01:29Not a waiting for just for the right of the bag, in the well, one away.
- 2:01:35You know, Baltimore finished second of the Yankees last year by eight games, but it was around the 15th of September.
- 2:01:42I believe that they were only half game off the pace and then they went into that tragic experience of moving into Yankee Stadium
- 2:01:48and seeing the Bratz Bummer's sweep four games.
- 2:01:53Well, that went out here, not on, and the fine shortstop Ronnie Henson stepped in.
- 2:01:58As the wind blew up, he moved out of the batter's box.
- 2:02:01Ronnie has grounded out twice, the pitcher and the third baseman Eddie Ost.
- 2:02:05Gerber into the windup, delivers, fastball, plan a bounce to right-up for Kell, the shortstop.
- 2:02:09Takes on a big handle on the second half, over to Clue, plenty of time, key down here for the Orioles in the sixth.
- 2:02:18He schedules, give one club the opportunity to take a quick, firm lead in the Bennett race that is off to the Orioles.
- 2:02:25For during the first-month's play, 20 of 27 Baltimore games are against what are designated by the experts as Second Division Clubs.
- 2:02:34Here's Gene Stevens, he's worked twice.
- 2:02:39Gene fame as Ted Williams, old caddy with the red socks.
- 2:02:44Angels lead here, 7-2 in the last of the sixth.
- 2:02:47Here's the pitch to Stevens, takes low, ball one.
- 2:02:53Total so far, the Angels 7-1, six hits, three errors.
- 2:02:57Baltimore two runs, four hits, and no errors committed.
- 2:03:02All windows strikes count. Gerber, Tranks delivers, swings, there's a hard smash to right field for a base hit.
- 2:03:08Good half for Marty and Kudusky, field is back Pearson.
- 2:03:11Stevens makes his turn, wheels back into first base with a single and there's hit number five for the Orioles.
- 2:03:20Here's the second base from Marv Reading up the bat.
- 2:03:24Manager Paul Richards describes this fellow as somebody that the opposition never raves about,
- 2:03:30but after a ball game are usually completely distraught because he does so much to hurt them the late innings.
- 2:03:35Right-handed batter, the pitch down to the dirt gets away from the catcher, there goes the runner to second base,
- 2:03:39the ball is retrieved by the pitcher as Del Rice couldn't find it.
- 2:03:43If the wild pitch turns to get Gerber and Stevens moves in a scoring position,
- 2:03:48and the count on the batter, Marv Reading, all one.
- 2:03:54That one got away down to the dirt.
- 2:04:01Should Reading get on base there, I believe Succasigian is going to bat for a bit of half the pitcher.
- 2:04:09Art Wilhelm, the old knuckleballer, warming up for the Baltimore bullpen.
- 2:04:13Now the stretch. Here's the next pitch to Reading.
- 2:04:18Try to check his swing and to foul ball.
- 2:04:24Nonstop front of the plate after hitting the batter, the count is ball one and strike one.
- 2:04:29Gene Stevens on second, two out here for the Byrds in the last of the sixth inning.
- 2:04:41It wasn't the Byrds, but it was the Ingles who were really clapping their wings the first couple of innings out here this afternoon.
- 2:04:48Now the stretch, one one to count.
- 2:04:51The pitch.
- 2:04:53Strike, a good fastball, and then sat in front of the batter high.
- 2:04:57So Eli Gerber has the edge, ball one and strike two on Marv Reading.
- 2:05:02Pitchers at San Francisco, we have them now.
- 2:05:04Bob Frem for the Pirates and Sad Sam Jones for San Francisco.
- 2:05:09A good hit on that one.
- 2:05:11Here it seems the leading Orioles, seven to two.
- 2:05:13Baltimore with Stevens on second, two down.
- 2:05:16One and two, the count on Reading. The stretch by Gerber. The pitch. Good ball high and inside. Ball two.
- 2:05:21Two and two.
- 2:05:28Gerber, who prior to today had faced the Baltimore Orioles in only three innings in his major league career.
- 2:05:36The seven two-thirds innings here has given up the two runs thus far and only five hits.
- 2:05:40Now the stretch, two-two the count to Reading.
- 2:05:42Here it comes. Swings there's a high play ball out the left field corner.
- 2:05:47Chased by a third, Raquel and Yost, and it is out of play under the lower box seats.
- 2:05:54So the count holds the ball two and strikes two.
- 2:05:57Incidentally, Ronnie Kline, the former Pittsburgh right-hander, was purchased last night by the Eagles for an unannounced amount of cash
- 2:06:05when they say it was Cardinal.
- 2:06:08Ron incidentally pitched for our Angel general manager Fred Hayden when the latter was manager of the Pirates.
- 2:06:15And Kline reported this morning and is in uniform.
- 2:06:19So the Angels acquired some new ball players here in that area.
- 2:06:22Another pitcher, Rae Sembrock, and of course their shortstop starting in the season opener today, Pritzy Bacal.
- 2:06:28On two-two the count here on Reading.
- 2:06:31Stevens who after two downs singled and took second on the wild pitch takes his lead.
- 2:06:35Now the pitch. Strike three swinging to retire the side, got him a big bending curve ball.
- 2:06:41That's the second strike off for Eli Gerber and at the end of six-thinnings of play after Baltimore failed to score on one run
- 2:06:47and left one stranded for a total of six stranded, it is Los Angeles Angels 7 and the Baltimore Orioles 2.
- 2:06:54Well, today's the beginning of the big league season.
- 2:06:57And for a lot of you fans there's a great opportunity for a new beginning in filter smoking.
- 2:07:02Until now you had only two choices in filter cigarettes.
- 2:07:06Those that had the filter you wanted or the others that had good tasting blends.
- 2:07:10Naturally you wanted both, the filter and the right taste.
- 2:07:14And today you can get both combined in one cigarette, Viceroy.
- 2:07:19Viceroy's got it at both ends. Got the filter, got the blend.
- 2:07:23Deep Weed Filter, first of the modern filters. The perfect filter for Viceroy's deep cured blend.
- 2:07:29Remember some cigarettes give you the filter you want, others a good tasting blend.
- 2:07:33But only Viceroy's got it at both ends. Deep Weed Filter, deep cured blend.
- 2:07:38They go together. So fans start the season off right. Smoke Viceroy.
- 2:07:43They go together. Go together. Deep Weed Filter, deep cured blend. Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:07:56Well now that the few Angel fans have taken your seventh inning stretch, let's go back to play.
- 2:08:00Los Angeles leading 7 to 2. Ken Aspermati leads off and here's Don Will.
- 2:08:05Thank you, Steve.
- 2:08:09Second baseman Ken Aspermati will lead off here against the left-hander Billy Heft.
- 2:08:15Well two of the happiest people in the ballpark today are seated right down below us, Gene Autry and Bob Reynolds.
- 2:08:23And they're really happy that the Angels picked up three in the first and four in the second and lead here 7 to 2 as we start the seventh inning.
- 2:08:35Lou Johnson ran down into the bullpen area and that is beyond the YFN side in right field.
- 2:08:42So Lou waiting for them to open the gate down there while he's held up momentarily.
- 2:08:46Aspermati stepping in now. Ken has one hit. Three times a bat. Score the run in the second inning.
- 2:08:52And facing the fourth Baltimore pitcher of the afternoon, Billy Heft.
- 2:08:56Heft swung on foul back on the screen. Strike line.
- 2:08:59Heft to force a screwball at another sudden the few pitches that he's done us this afternoon.
- 2:09:06The Minnesota Twins 3. The New York Yankees nothing at the end of 7.
- 2:09:11The Cleveland Indians 7. They had a Tri-Tigers 5 at the end of 7.
- 2:09:18Bell to Phillips just popped a homer for Cleveland however and the eighth with the man on.
- 2:09:22So they had expanded their lead now to 9 to 5 at least at his Cleveland's lead.
- 2:09:27Here's the one strike offering by Heft and it's one close, one ball and one strike.
- 2:09:32Kansas City 2. Boston 1 at the end of 5.
- 2:09:35In the National League, Cincinnati 7. The Cubs 1. That game in the last half of the sixth.
- 2:09:39Milwaukee 1. St. Louis nothing at the end of 6.
- 2:09:43Pitch again a little close. Ball 2 and it's 2 and 1.
- 2:09:47Ken Aspermati, Albie Persson and Ted Klasinski will come up here.
- 2:09:51First half of the seventh inning. The Angels lead 7 to 2.
- 2:09:55The motion again by Heft and the Pitch. Swung on. High fly ball.
- 2:09:58Left hand of the wind out in left field. Coming off with the ball at Stevens.
- 2:10:01Going out for it Hanson and the short staff Roddy Hanson caught it fair.
- 2:10:05Took it by about a foot. Inside the line. Wall down the foul line.
- 2:10:08Now for station identification. This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 2:10:12This is KMPC 50,000 watts Los Angeles.
- 2:10:15And this is Dick Whittinghill suggesting you stay tuned to the only radio station with two Air Watch helicopters.
- 2:10:21One of them co-piloted by a dog.
- 2:10:23Action radio at 710 on everybody's dial.
- 2:10:27Though Albie steps in at the batter's box. Albie walked and scored him a first single.
- 2:10:32Drove in around and scored around on the second pitch to him now.
- 2:10:35And he ran up on it. Tried to run it. He got a bluff and then he took a good pitch for a strike.
- 2:10:40And Albie then flat out in the fourth inning to retire the side.
- 2:10:45Robinson pulled in from third as Persson had run up on that pitch by Billy Heft.
- 2:10:51Now with one strike on him, a lead up by Billy.
- 2:10:54Right in there for strike to make it nothing in two.
- 2:11:00One out with nobody on.
- 2:11:02Start of a 13 games in 15 days road trip for the Angels.
- 2:11:07Here's the two-strike pitch coming in.
- 2:11:09Persson takes up a bit high and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 2:11:14So those two game series winds up tomorrow night with a night game followed by two days off.
- 2:11:19Then we'll have a single game at Boston Saturday, followed by a Sunday doubleheader.
- 2:11:23Then we'll play three straight day games in New York.
- 2:11:26Pitch to Persson. Strike, take, call.
- 2:11:28Nice side on delivery by Billy Heft that got Persson leading away from the fight.
- 2:11:32So Albie is caught on on strikes. Now they're two out in the seventh.
- 2:11:36Here's the first baseman, Ted Plaszewski.
- 2:11:39Clue hit a two-run homer in the first inning, hit a three-run homer in the second,
- 2:11:43and then bounced out to third baseman, Brooks Robinson, leading off to fifth.
- 2:11:53Billy Heft, the left-hander, works through Klasinski.
- 2:11:56The motion going and the pitch on the way.
- 2:11:58Clue swings, little pop-up off of the right side.
- 2:12:00Second baseman, Mark Breeding, calling for this.
- 2:12:02On the dirt surface of the infield, midway between first and second makes the catch to retire the side.
- 2:12:07Clue banged that one right off the handle.
- 2:12:09Three up and three down on the seventh inning and with nothing across the score at the end of the first half of the seventh,
- 2:12:15our Los Angeles Angels seven and the Baltimore Orioles two.
- 2:12:19Take a clean, pure sound.
- 2:12:21Take a rich, mellow sound.
- 2:12:29They go together.
- 2:12:35They go together.
- 2:12:38Pure and rich.
- 2:12:40They go together like the deep-weave filter and the deep-tured blend.
- 2:12:48They go together, the deep-weave filter and the viceroy blend.
- 2:12:52They go together, they go together.
- 2:12:55Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:12:58Sure, some cigarettes tell you they've got the filter.
- 2:13:01Others, the blend.
- 2:13:03But viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:13:05Got the deep-weave filter and the deep-tured blend.
- 2:13:09Deep-weave filter, the perfect filter to go with viceroy's deep-tured blend.
- 2:13:15They go together, go together.
- 2:13:18The deep-weave filter and the deep-tured blend.
- 2:13:21Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:13:24Yes, sir, viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:13:27Got the filter, got the blend.
- 2:13:29The greats, folks, get viceroy.
- 2:13:33Jack Assajian comes up here to bat for the pitcher Billy Heft.
- 2:13:40The Orioles have been granted a 30-day extension on their conditional purchase agreement on Assajian.
- 2:13:46If he fails to make the Baltimore roster, and apparently he's going to make it here,
- 2:13:50but they still have the 30-day extension, if he should fail to make the Baltimore roster,
- 2:13:54he will be returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers' Focan Club.
- 2:13:58Jack Assajian, right-handed batter.
- 2:14:02Right-of-man for the Dodgers in the 59 World Series in a pinch-hitting role on a couple of occasions.
- 2:14:08Two distance jobs.
- 2:14:10Curveball flung, and here's a high pop-up back of the mound.
- 2:14:13Coming over for it, Julio Becker just came in to play first, and Becker makes the catch.
- 2:14:18One out.
- 2:14:19So Julio Becker in there in place of Ted Klosinski.
- 2:14:24And Julio, responsible for the first put-out here in the Baltimore half of the seventh inning.
- 2:14:30The Minnesota Twins came up with two more runs in the eighth inning on a two-run homer by Reno Bertaya,
- 2:14:37and they lead 5-0 over the Yankees.
- 2:14:39New York batting in the last half of the eighth.
- 2:14:41That homer off Ralph Terry.
- 2:14:43Here's center fielder Jackie Brand stepping in there now.
- 2:14:46One out, done on.
- 2:14:48Angels lead 7-2.
- 2:14:50Big motion by Gerber, the pitch lower on the outside for ball one.
- 2:14:55So the Angels have scored seven runs on a half dozen hits.
- 2:14:59Baltimore with two runs on five hits.
- 2:15:04The pitch by Yui, right in there, strike call to make it one-on-one.
- 2:15:09Three times today, manager Paul Richards has gone to the bench.
- 2:15:13Dave Philly, Earl Robinson, and Chuck Assidion.
- 2:15:17And Gerber has disposed of all of them.
- 2:15:19High floating curve, and a swing and a foul off this.
- 2:15:22Back up on the screen, and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 2:15:26Now it's been on the cold side and cloudy out here at Memorial Stadium today,
- 2:15:30but that's the kind of weather that puts players on their toes,
- 2:15:33and the kind of weather when it's good to sit back and light up a Viceroy,
- 2:15:36as you enjoy this ball game today, here in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:15:44Two-strike delivery coming in now.
- 2:15:45Sidearm pitch off the inside edge of the plate to make it two balls, two strikes.
- 2:16:00Gerber with a two-strike offering again.
- 2:16:02Fed went in there that apparently was up a bit too high.
- 2:16:08Kind of showing on the board out there, and indicated now that it's two balls and two strikes.
- 2:16:12So it's an even count shown on Brandt.
- 2:16:15One out here with nobody on.
- 2:16:18Gerber has been terrific. He's scattered around five hits.
- 2:16:23Oh, let's see. It is shown now. Full count, three and two.
- 2:16:28Plate umpire Stevens just stepped around to the right side of the plate.
- 2:16:30Now they've made the correction on the board.
- 2:16:34Now by Springer.
- 2:16:42Russ Snyder has been up three times, reached out a field of choice in the first inning,
- 2:16:46walked in the third, flat out of the fifth.
- 2:16:49Kerrball swinging a bounding ball right back by Gerber, base hit in the center field.
- 2:16:53So with two out in the seventh inning, that is hit number six.
- 2:16:59He gave up a single to Brandt in the first, single to Gentile in the second,
- 2:17:03single to Brandt in the third.
- 2:17:05The only extra plays in, a double by Robinson in the fifth, single by Stevens in the sixth,
- 2:17:09single by Snyder here in the seventh.
- 2:17:12Thirty-seven thousand, three hundred and fifty-two.
- 2:17:16That's the official paid attendance.
- 2:17:18Thirty-seven thousand, three hundred and fifty-two at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 2:17:23Brooks Robinson, one hit, three times at bat, and the pitch to the right handers.
- 2:17:28And then here's a high pop-up on the third base side, Eddie Yost coming outside the line, getting over the bow.
- 2:17:33Yost makes the catch, and that retires the side.
- 2:17:36So on the seventh inning, no runs, one hit, no errors, one left.
- 2:17:42Score at the end of seventh, the Angels seven, Baltimore two.
- 2:17:47Well it started today, the Angels on a march that in time can lead to a World Series.
- 2:17:52It's Major League Baseball, American League Baseball, the best naturally.
- 2:17:57The Angels are in the thick of the excitement.
- 2:17:59They'll be home on Thursday, April the 27th, for the history-making inaugural of American League Baseball in Wrigley Field,
- 2:18:07when they play the Minnesota Twins, the slugging stars Bob Allison, Harm Killer Brew, and Jim Lemon.
- 2:18:14But first on the road, the Orioles, then from here to Boston, the Red Sox, the Yankees, the Tigers, and the White Sox in Chicago, and them.
- 2:18:23The day of days in easy-to-reach Wrigley Field. Ensure yourself now of all the thrills of this never-to-be-forgotten day.
- 2:18:31You just won't be in style if you're not there by ordering your comfortable seats without right before your eyes close-up views.
- 2:18:40Remember, you can make it easy on yourself with a Bank of America card for tickets.
- 2:18:45Call, write, or visit Wrigley Field, the address 435 East 42nd Place, the phone number Adams 2-4761.
- 2:18:56Now running down the scoreboard, at the end of 8 at Yankee Stadium, Minnesota now leads the Yankees 5-0.
- 2:19:05Wrigley Betoy had a two-run homer in the eighth inning. And at the end of eight innings at Detroit, the score there, the Cleveland Indians are leading the Detroit Tigers 9-5.
- 2:19:17But at the end of six at Boston, the Kansas City Athletics leading the Boston Red Sox 4-1.
- 2:19:23In the bottom of the seventh inning, of course, or rather at the end of seven innings here at Baltimore, it's 7-2.
- 2:19:31The Angels over the Baltimore O'Reals. In the National League in the ninth of the seventh inning, Cincinnati Reds lead the Chicago Cubs 7-1, 0-2 all the way thus far for Cincinnati.
- 2:19:43And at the bottom of the seventh inning at Milwaukee, the Braves lead the Cardinals 1-0 on Eddie Matthews, fourth inning home run off Ernie Brodeo.
- 2:19:51Warren Spahn has pitch shutout ball for seven frames at the Cardinals.
- 2:19:55Pittsburgh field score at the top of the inning at Candlestick Park. So it's the Pirates nothing and the Giants nothing.
- 2:20:02They're a bad friend against bad Sam Jones. And the Phillies and the Dodgers strike the Coliseum.
- 2:20:09All right, we have a new pitcher. The Angels come to bat here in the top of the seventh inning and serve the batter. I'll tell you about it again, Don Wells.
- 2:20:15Clyde Wilhelm is the new pitcher. So we have the oversized mitt now, the catcher's mitt being used by Gus Priandis, this mammoth thing, this mammoth hunk of leather that they use for the Wilhelm knuckleball.
- 2:20:26And the leadoff man for the Angels will be left the other Bob Serr. Pete Ramos, who never has too much in the way of success with the Yankees, he has a shutout parade inning.
- 2:20:34That's quite a job today at Yankee Stadium. Swing on the knuckle, and a miss for Spike Lee.
- 2:20:39Wilhelm is sometimes referred to as tilt. He has a cast in one eye and he leans that head to one side to get that sign, but you can just about figure what he's going to throw anyway.
- 2:20:50And the next one bites down in the dirt and it's one ball and one strike. Also called the dancer because of his very elusive knuckler.
- 2:20:59In the 60 season, he wound up winning 11 and losing 8. 3.31 earned run marks. Swing on the knuckleball, long shot but foul down the left field line.
- 2:21:09Serb smiling now as he steps back to the plate. Conversation with Gus Priandis.
- 2:21:15Bob hit a homer in the first inning. A long poke, 400 feet away over the fence out in right center field. Struck out in the second, struck out again in the fifth.
- 2:21:24Here are one ball, two strike counts. The eighth inning getting underway and the Angels lead seven to two.
- 2:21:32And the next pitch is flung out. There's a high, shallow fly ball out in right field. Moving on for Snyder.
- 2:21:37Drifting back a bit now as the wind cuts that ball and he puts it away. So Bob Serb flies to Russ Snyder in right.
- 2:21:44One out in the eighth inning. Coming up the center fielder Ken Hunt.
- 2:21:57Wilhelm saw service both as a starter and a reliever in the 60 season. Pitch to Kenny Hunt in close ball one.
- 2:22:04Ken today has been up there three times. Walked in the first, hit by a pitch in the third, popped out in the fifth.
- 2:22:12The motion, the pitch. Knuckles right in there, strike. The flutter ball and it's one ball and one strike.
- 2:22:20Richard sometimes refers to Wilhelm as Dr. Hoyt in his traveling medicine show and he puts on quite a show with that knuckle ball.
- 2:22:29Here's a swing Albert and a miss. One ball and two strikes. Six feet tall, 190 pounds.
- 2:22:36He started out his organized baseball career in 1942. Originally with the Giants. The knuckles low and outside.
- 2:22:44Ball two and it's two and two. He had a great year with the Giants in 1952 when he won 15 games, lost only three and had an earned run mark of 2.43.
- 2:22:55Wilhelm two and two on Hunt and the pitch swung on. Here's a pop-up on the left side.
- 2:23:00Third baseman Brooks Robinson makes the call. Midway between second and third makes the catch.
- 2:23:06Now there are two out of the eighth inning. Here is Fritz Brichel.
- 2:23:12Popped out of the first inning, hit and a double play on the third, singled in the sixth.
- 2:23:23Two down, nobody on and Fritz by Wilhelm, swing and a ground ball off of the shortstop side. One hop to Ronnie Hanson. There's the throw in the dirt.
- 2:23:30Duck up, back to the field. Nice pick up to retire the side.
- 2:23:35In the eighth inning, three up and three down. That's the Angels story and with nothing across the score at the end of the first half of the eighth, the Angels seven, Baltimore two.
- 2:23:45Now for all you fans who like a little music between innings, here's a new hit tune for Smoker.
- 2:24:01Yes, Viceroy's got it at both ends and what a difference that makes.
- 2:24:05Used to be you had to choose between the filter cigarette with the filter you wanted or the other kind with the right blend for taste. And of course you wanted both in one cigarette and today you get it in Viceroy.
- 2:24:17Only Viceroy's got it at both ends, got the filter, got the blend. You get Viceroy's deep weed filter. That's the first of the modern filters.
- 2:24:26The perfect filter to go with Viceroy's rich deep pure blend and man how they go together. Try Viceroy.
- 2:24:33They go together, go together. The deep weed filter and the deep pure blend. Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:24:45In outfield change now for the Angels, Lou Johnson replaces Bob Serb in left. So Johnson in left, not in center.
- 2:24:53Abby Person in right. No change in the infield. Julio Becker is at first, Aspermati at second, for Kellett Short, Eddie Yost at third.
- 2:25:03Del Rice works behind the plate on the mound, Eli Gerber who so far has given up six hits. Five of them have been singles.
- 2:25:11The Giants have taken a two nothing lead over the Pirates at the end of one. Friend and Jones. Milwaukee one, St. Louis nothing at the end of seven.
- 2:25:20Braves lead in the homer by Eddie Matthews in the fourth. Jim Gentile leads off curveball by Gerber.
- 2:25:26And he really hollers in at Stevens as Janssen says that was low and close for ball one.
- 2:25:32Well it's shown on the board as a strike.
- 2:25:37Double check on it now. Fastball's swung on foul back on the screen. Big cut on that pitch by Gentile.
- 2:25:46Scoreboard indicates a nothing and two count.
- 2:25:51So unless we get a show of a correction by Stevens with Gerber now taking a look at the board.
- 2:25:58Gerber's still looking at it and it may be he wonders about it.
- 2:26:03Now it is shown one and one. That's the thing that had Gerber fooled and me fooled for a moment was the fact that the scoreboard still has two strikes up there.
- 2:26:11And it's a one ball one strike count. Here's the motion again. Eli led up on one. A swing and a very high fly ball.
- 2:26:16Not going anywhere out in right center field. Ken Hunt is there moving in a bit. His left makes the catch.
- 2:26:21So Gentile one for four today. He is singled in the second inning.
- 2:26:27Here's the catcher Gus Triandos. Gus is fighting the big wind out here today.
- 2:26:32The terrific wind that has been ripping across from left to right.
- 2:26:39Fly it out in the second. Fly it out in the third. Popped out in the sixth.
- 2:26:46Here's the pitch to Gus. Fast ball by Gerber. Letter high but outside and it's ball one.
- 2:26:52The Angels lead seven to two. We're in the last half of the eighth inning. Gerber to the rising bag.
- 2:27:03Here's the pitcher on the way. Another fast ball swung on, driven out into the field. Lou Johnson in the crack of this ball makes the catch.
- 2:27:09Hit it right at Johnson.
- 2:27:13Lou started in a step, then gave a step, made the catch.
- 2:27:18Now they're two gone in the eighth inning. Here's the shortstop Roddy Hanson.
- 2:27:24So what a pitching performance by Gerber.
- 2:27:29One extra base hit. Double by Robinson in the fifth.
- 2:27:34The motion and the pitch. Big curve that he broke off low and outside for ball one.
- 2:27:42And what a day for Klosinski. Five RBIs. That'll put him out in front in the American League in RBIs at the end of first big day of the season.
- 2:27:52Here's a strike called. Offered to Roddy Hanson and it's one ball and one strike.
- 2:28:01Put him out of the lead in home runs too with a pair in this game.
- 2:28:06Here's the one-run delivery offered up by Gerber and it's low outside, ball two to make it two and one.
- 2:28:12Remember that Angel Report scores and interviews with American League stars follows every Angel broadcast, every game.
- 2:28:22We'll have quite a show for you today.
- 2:28:26Ball two and strike one with two out and not on. Roddy Hanson who has been checked in the infield today.
- 2:28:33Three times, waits now and the two unpitched to him. Swung out, here's a fly ball, got it out of the infield.
- 2:28:39Driven well out to our left-center, Lou Johnson there. Also Kenny Hunt. Hunt makes the catch to retire the side.
- 2:28:47So another ball, well tagged but fighting the win. Three up and three down. Nothing across for the Orioles and the score at the end of eight innings of play.
- 2:28:55Score in the totals. Our Angels seven runs, six hits and three errors. Baltimore two runs, six hits, no errors.
- 2:29:02Make a clean, pure sound. Make a rich, mellow sound. They go together.
- 2:29:11Pure and rich. They go together like the deep weed filter and the deep cured blend in Viceroy's Cigarette.
- 2:29:20They go together. Go together. The deep weed filter and the Viceroy blend. Go together. They go together. Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:29:33Sure, some cigarettes tell you they've got the filter. Others, the blend. But Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:29:41They have the deep weed filter and the deep cured blend. Deep weed filter. The perfect filter to go with Viceroy's deep cured blend.
- 2:29:51They go together. Go together. The deep weed filter and the deep cured blend. Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:30:05Got the filter. Got the blend. The great smoke. Get Viceroy.
- 2:30:14Minnesota came up with another run in the ninth inning and they laid the Yankees six to nothing.
- 2:30:19Here in the Angel half of the night, catcher Del Rice, the eighth man of the batting order, moves in there against right-hander Hoyt Wilhelm.
- 2:30:28Del has been up three times, walked in the second, flied out in the third, and sacrificed in the sixth.
- 2:30:42Six hits apiece for these two teams. There's a pitch by Wilhelm high and outside, and it's ball one.
- 2:30:55Wilhelm set again and the next one right in there. Strike to make it one and one.
- 2:30:59This oversized mid is really something. In the pocket of this catcher's mid, you can put about four or five baseballs.
- 2:31:06They made it that size just to be able to give the catchers some help down there.
- 2:31:10Swing and a foul. Foul from the first base side. Drops very quickly away from Jim Gentile.
- 2:31:15And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 2:31:22One and two. One of the new Baltimore coaches is Jim Busby.
- 2:31:28The first of the betterment outfielder can be converted back to active player status almost immediately.
- 2:31:37Now the two-strike offering to Del Rice popped out of the mid of Triumvus up high. And it's ball two and strike two.
- 2:31:44The Baltimore infield today is the same that started last year's opener when the Orioles knocked over the old Washington Senators three to two
- 2:31:51before 32,747 fans. Pitched a rise swing and a tap foul left side of the plate.
- 2:31:58And after their win in the opener, the Orioles then dropped two in a row to the Senators and then they lost three straight to the Yankees in New York.
- 2:32:08Two balls, two strikes. Del Rice up there waiting and the pitch outside at the knee. Ball three. Three and two.
- 2:32:18Graham took out on Del Rice. Eli Gerber will be up there next to the pitch.
- 2:32:29There's a high foul up over our heads. Tap into the upper deck.
- 2:32:34Here at Memorial Stadium, too, they have a mezzanine section.
- 2:32:38Just sort of a very brief third tier here that is right under the upper deck portion of the ballpark.
- 2:32:46I'd say it's only about, well, it contains about five or six rows of seats.
- 2:32:50Swinging the ground ball over the shortstop side. Easy hop for Hanson. Throw to first. Got him.
- 2:32:54So Del Rice goes out of there short to first.
- 2:32:57Rodney Hanson, two is left to pick that ball up, moving toward the back at second.
- 2:33:02Coming out of the dugout now, Eli Gerber.
- 2:33:09Here's the hand for Eli. What a job he has done here on opening day.
- 2:33:18Richly deserved. The applause that Gerber gets now as he walks up to the plate.
- 2:33:23Eli's been up there three times, reached on a fielders choice and scored a run in the second inning,
- 2:33:28flat out in the fourth and sacrificed in the sixth. And the pitch low outside, ball one.
- 2:33:35Sun is out rather brightly now. The shadow of the upper deck in left field creeps out across the outfield grass.
- 2:33:42Out in front of the left field of Gene Stevens. Swing and a foul tipped.
- 2:33:46They make it one ball and one strike.
- 2:33:49Snyder in right field, Jackie Brown in center, Gene Stevens in left, Robinson Hanson breathing genteel.
- 2:33:55Third to first around the infield.
- 2:33:57Briandos on the receiving end and Wohelm, fifth pitcher, delivers and a swing and a ground ball.
- 2:34:02Swap step side, nice backhand by Hanson, throws down to the pitch.
- 2:34:06Gets that right genteel out.
- 2:34:08And what a fielding play.
- 2:34:10Johnny Hanson to begin with, deep in the hole and short, backhand of the ball,
- 2:34:14fired it down in the dugout in front of genteel and Jim with that tremendously long stretch of his,
- 2:34:20reached out and made the pick up of that ball and that is out number two.
- 2:34:24So in this game you give credit where it is due and it certainly applied there.
- 2:34:30Now there are two out here, third baseman Eddie Yost.
- 2:34:33Eddie popped out of the first inning, walked in the second, struck out in the fourth and again in the sixth.
- 2:34:39Two down, ninth inning and the pitch up high.
- 2:34:42To Eddie for ball one.
- 2:34:45All the angel scoring came in the first two innings.
- 2:34:49Three on the first, four in the second.
- 2:34:52The big gun Klosinski and the pitch outside.
- 2:34:56Make it ball two. Two and nothing.
- 2:34:59The starter for the Orioles went an inning and two thirds.
- 2:35:03He walked four men.
- 2:35:05Pappa, the number two pitcher, went a third of an inning.
- 2:35:07West Stock worked two innings and Billy Heff went three.
- 2:35:10Right down the middle for a strike to make it two and one.
- 2:35:13Heff was very effective. He worked three innings allowing one hit, no runs.
- 2:35:17Struck out three and walked none.
- 2:35:19West Stock did a good job too.
- 2:35:20Swing and a fly ball off the bat of Yost out of the left field.
- 2:35:23Shout about there. Stevens coming out and the shortstop going out.
- 2:35:25And Roddy Hanson makes the catch.
- 2:35:27Stevens cleared away.
- 2:35:28Three up and three down in the ninth inning.
- 2:35:31So on the last three innings the Angels have been retired in order.
- 2:35:35And with nothing across, score at the end of the first half of the ninth inning
- 2:35:41on Los Angeles Angels seven and the Baltimore Orioles two.
- 2:35:55You know I used to get my signals crossed when I tried to pick a filter cigarette.
- 2:36:00I'd try one brand because it had the kind of filter I wanted.
- 2:36:04And then I'd smoke another because it had the right blend.
- 2:36:07But none of them were a hit with me until I discovered Viceroy.
- 2:36:11And what a difference it makes because Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:36:16That's right, at both ends. Got the filter, got the blend.
- 2:36:19Take Viceroy's deep weave filter, first of the modern filters.
- 2:36:23It slowly weaves and reweaves the smoke for the smooth taste a filter smoker wants.
- 2:36:28Yes, it's the perfect filter for Viceroy's rich deep cured blend.
- 2:36:32If they go together, Viceroy's deep weed filter and deep cured blend,
- 2:36:36smoke Viceroy, you'll see.
- 2:36:38They go together, they go together, the deep weed filter and the deep cured blend.
- 2:36:44Viceroy's got it at both ends.
- 2:36:52Now at the bottom are half of the ninth inning.
- 2:36:56Jane Stevens, the left fielder, will lead off against Eli Gerba.
- 2:37:02The Blazon Indians beat the Detroit Tigers today 9-5,
- 2:37:05and they opened up an 18-hit attack of the combination of four Tiger pitchers.
- 2:37:12The Yankees are batting in the ninth, and they're hurting.
- 2:37:15They've been shut out by Ramos all the way.
- 2:37:21Stevens about it. He has walked twice and had a base hit.
- 2:37:24And the pitch by Gerba put the fast run in there for a strike.
- 2:37:28Well over 37,000 fans on a raw day in Baltimore.
- 2:37:34Have to see this one today.
- 2:37:37The wind up by Gerba and the curve ball is swung and grappled out of the shortstop side.
- 2:37:41Verkel scoops it up. There's a total first. He got him up number one.
- 2:37:45So Stevens goes out of there short to first.
- 2:37:51Coming up now, second baseman, Mar Breeding.
- 2:38:06Here's the motion down the pitch. Fastball popped right in there for a strike.
- 2:38:09Nothing in one. Well the slogan around here is it can be done in 61, but the object is that it can't be done today.
- 2:38:20That's what Gerba wants to see today.
- 2:38:22Here's a spike and a miss and an overpowering fastball.
- 2:38:24Gerba, the type of pitcher, just gets stronger as he goes along.
- 2:38:28He's blown in two fastballs here to Breeding, and quickly he has a two-strike count on the Oriole second baseman.
- 2:38:36The wind kicks up quite a bit at Earth around the infield as Gerba prepares to pitch again.
- 2:38:42A two-strike pitch, strike, free call. Right in there.
- 2:38:45Breeding is called out on strike.
- 2:38:47Now they're two outs.
- 2:38:50We'll have a batter for the pitcher.
- 2:38:52The Giants have a two-nothing lead over the Pirates at the end of two.
- 2:38:55This looks like Zupo.
- 2:39:03That was Zupo, the catchers of the Baltimore Ball Club.
- 2:39:23Mike Zupo, native of San Francisco and a pitch to the left-handed batting receiver.
- 2:39:27In too close for ball one. He was with Stockton last year, he had three 19s, had 69 RBIs and seven home runs.
- 2:39:36Left-handed batter, the next pitch outside the second one-and-one.
- 2:39:40Frank, who was born in San Francisco in 1935, 111, 180 pounds.
- 2:39:46Papers, dust flying all over the infield now.
- 2:39:50This wind swirls around this giant horseshoe ballpark.
- 2:39:56Two out here, nobody on, ninth inning.
- 2:39:59And the motion and the pitch by Gerbeth, outside.
- 2:40:09So the count has gone three-and-nothing on Zupo.
- 2:40:18Here's the pitch by Gerbeth, strike call.
- 2:40:23Stable Cardinals have come back to tie Milwaukee now, one-and-one at the end of eight.
- 2:40:29The motion and the pitch, high and outside to him, ball four.
- 2:40:33Zupo gets on.
- 2:40:37So he is the first successful pinch hitter for the Orioles this afternoon.
- 2:40:43And here on the ninth inning, he works Gerbeth for a base on balls.
- 2:40:47And here's the center fielder, Jackie Brand.
- 2:40:49Jackie's single to the first, again in the third, struck out in the fifth.
- 2:40:54And Gerbeth cut him down on strikes again in the seventh.
- 2:40:57Now they're two out, last out of the ninth inning.
- 2:40:59The Angels lead seven to two.
- 2:41:02So Gerbeth needs one more up there on the board.
- 2:41:08Stretch taken by Eli, and the pitch coming in is swinging a bit.
- 2:41:11That's a fast ball again, and it's nothing in the line.
- 2:41:23Zupo, Z-U-P-O, he is the runner up at first.
- 2:41:26And the next delivery, that takes strike two call.
- 2:41:29Quick curve right at the knee, worked the outside edge of the plate, and it's nothing in two.
- 2:41:35And on two count, right-handed hitter Jackie Brand.
- 2:41:41Zupo, away with his lead, and the next pitch, he just missed with it.
- 2:41:47Magically, the entire Angel in field, ready to come off the field.
- 2:41:51Burkel started to lead the charge from his spotted short, but it's one ball and two strikes.
- 2:41:58One on two count.
- 2:42:04Many of the fans have already vacated the premises out here.
- 2:42:08Angels lead seven to two, two out.
- 2:42:10Here's the pitch on the way down, and it's strike three call.
- 2:42:13Jackie Brand is called on his strikes.
- 2:42:15Here's Del Reis out, flips that ball to Eli Gerba, gets handshakes all around.
- 2:42:20From Yost, from Becker, from Aspermati, from Burkel.
- 2:42:23Players coming off the bench now to shake hands with Eli Gerba.
- 2:42:27The winning pitcher this afternoon, a distance-going job, a complete game for Gerba.
- 2:42:32No high-thinning, no runs, no hits, no errors, and one man left.
- 2:42:37So fans, the final score of our ball game this afternoon in a two-hour and 33-minute ball game,
- 2:42:49with the Angels leaving a total of three minutes on and Baltimore's stranding eighth.
- 2:42:54So for the Los Angeles Angels, the winner in this American League opener for 1961,
- 2:43:01here are the totals.
- 2:43:02The Angels seven runs, six hits, three errors, and three men left.
- 2:43:07The losing Baltimore Orioles, two runs, six hits, no errors.
- 2:43:11They stranded a total of eight men, two hours and 33 minutes to complete the game.
- 2:43:16Eli Gerba went all the way for the victory, and the losing pitcher,
- 2:43:19the starter for the Baltimore Orioles, Milk Pappas.
- 2:43:23Final score, the Angels seven, Baltimore two.
- 2:43:26Los Angeles Angels baseball is brought to you by the top-selling coffee in the West,
