The Season with Peter Schrager: Jaguars OC Press Taylor · NFL explained.

• 0:07
Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
• 0:24
Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schrager. We are entering the final
• 0:28
Speaker 1: few days before training camps.
• 0:29
Speaker 2: Begin in the NFL. As you're listening to this.
• 0:32
Speaker 1: The Jets actually start camp this week as they have
• 0:35
Speaker 1: to get things going with the Hall of Fame game
• 0:39
Speaker 1: up ahead. They also got the news that they were
• 0:40
Speaker 1: on hard knocks this year, and I think all people
• 0:43
Speaker 1: are excited about it. The NFL is excited about it,
• 0:45
Speaker 1: NFL Films is excited about it. I'm excited about it.
• 0:48
Speaker 1: I don't get the feeling the Jets are so excited
• 0:50
Speaker 1: about it. And Aaron Rodgers made as much clear when
• 0:54
Speaker 1: he took to the cameras when they were interviewing him
• 0:57
Speaker 1: at the golf tournament and basically said, the league shoved
• 0:59
Speaker 1: it down their throats.
• 1:00
Speaker 2: Guess what they did.
• 1:01
Speaker 1: I'm excited to see what we get from it. Sala
• 1:04
Speaker 1: is an interesting character in this one, one for the
• 1:06
Speaker 1: camera's not looking to make it about him, and yet
• 1:09
  Speaker 1: he has.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: Such a cool life, such a cool, interesting.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: Family life, and one of the partons I like about
• 1:14
Speaker 1: hard knocks is they take us into the people's personal
• 1:17
Speaker 1: lives and goes into the homes. Robert Sala has seven
• 1:20
Speaker 1: kids under the age of thirteen. He's an NFL head coach.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: He's got all this expectations and all of I guess
• 1:28
Speaker 1: this pressure this year touse. I would like to think
• 1:31
Speaker 1: Salah is going to be one of the more interesting characters.
• 1:33
Speaker 2: I know Rogers, it's going to be fascinating.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: Question is Aaron as we think about that, does Rogers
• 1:39
Speaker 1: let them in for free?
• 1:40
Speaker 2: This is the guy, Aaron Rodgers who has ip to
• 1:43
  Speaker 2: his name that.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: He could sell his own documentary following his own career
• 1:46
Speaker 1: for millions of dollars. Is he going to be open
• 1:49
Speaker 1: with the cameras? Is he going to be saying, hey,
• 1:50
Speaker 1: let's take a day through my existence here.
• 1:53
  Speaker 2: I don't see it.
• 1:54
Speaker 1: I don't know if Rogers is going to be so welcoming,
• 1:56
Speaker 1: especially after we saw the quote that he gave at
• 1:59
Speaker 1: the golf tournament this weekend.
• 2:01
Speaker 3: I also wonder like, does Rogers have the Lebron set
• 2:03
Speaker 3: up where Lebron has had people following him at all
• 2:06
Speaker 3: times like filming the Inevitable documentary? Does Rogers also have
• 2:10
Speaker 3: that you might, yeah, So I don't know. I also
• 2:13
Speaker 3: feel like, what are you going to get like footage
• 2:16
Speaker 3: of Rogers going on McAfee show once a week, Like,
• 2:19
Speaker 3: I don't know if that's going to make the most
• 2:20
Speaker 3: enticing Hard Knocks footage.
• 2:22
Speaker 2: I'd like to see where Rogers lives.
• 2:24
Speaker 1: I think that would be interesting just from the lifestyles
• 2:26
Speaker 1: of the rich and famous aspect of it.
• 2:27
Speaker 2: I'd like to see.
• 2:28
Speaker 1: Rogers take a day trip to New York City. I
• 2:30
Speaker 1: would love to be along on the ride on that thing.
• 2:32
Speaker 1: And you know, as much as he might be a
• 2:35
Speaker 1: polarizing figure with his thoughts on whatever it was during
• 2:39
Speaker 1: the pandemic or his way his departure with the Packers went,
• 2:43
Speaker 1: Rogers smart guy. He's got a pretty quick humor. I
• 2:48
Speaker 1: think more Rogers the better. I think if we get
• 2:50
Speaker 1: on Hard Knocks and suddenly we're doing, you know, forty
• 2:53
Speaker 1: minutes on the third string corner and we're doing what's
• 2:57
Speaker 1: working out in the offensive line room, you're not getting
• 2:59
Speaker 1: what you really signed up for when you said, Jets,
• 3:02
Speaker 1: you must do this. So Aaron Rodgers, I would hope,
• 3:05
Speaker 1: would be a part of it. I'm just not sure
• 3:06
Speaker 1: how much he's going to give. Did you get a chance,
• 3:09
Speaker 1: Aaron to watch The Quarterback on Netflix yet? The new
• 3:13
Speaker 1: series that has been produced by Omaha as well as
• 3:17
Speaker 1: NFL Films and follows around the season of Patrick Mahomes
• 3:21
Speaker 1: Marcus Mariota. And after a week of feedback from this thing,
• 3:25
Speaker 1: everybody's darling Kirk Cousins.
• 3:27
Speaker 4: Yes, I am. I think I'm five episodes in so far.
• 3:31
Speaker 4: I'm trying to slow it.
• 3:32
Speaker 3: I don't want to binge the whole thing because this
• 3:34
Speaker 3: is kind of like our content until you know, hard
• 3:39
Speaker 3: Knocks comes up. So I've been I've been slowly enjoying it,
• 3:43
Speaker 3: and I really like it so far.
• 3:45
Speaker 1: All right, let me give you a couple of takeaways
• 3:47
Speaker 1: that I've had, and I want to hear whatever instant
• 3:50
Speaker 1: reactions you might have, because I haven't really talked about
• 3:52
Speaker 1: this with anybody except my wife, who has been watching
• 3:54
Speaker 1: it sporadically with me. One is Cousins the most likable, endearing,
• 4:01
Speaker 1: most just like I want to hug him and be
• 4:02
  Speaker 1: his best friend.
• 4:03
Speaker 2: Guy in the entire NFL. First of all, the guy
• 4:05
Speaker 2: takes an absolute beat.
• 4:06
Speaker 1: You never hear him complain his cerebral nature to playing
• 4:10
Speaker 1: quarterback with the writing down every different plan. I think
• 4:14
Speaker 1: it was episode four, episode three where they showed him
• 4:16
Speaker 1: wearing that headset, which yep, what.
• 4:18
Speaker 2: Is that called brain control? What was that then?
• 4:21
Speaker 3: I don't remember, but like he's watching something and it
• 4:25
Speaker 3: goes dark if he's not paying enough attention.
• 4:27
Speaker 1: It was a sports century on Larry Bird that he
• 4:30
Speaker 1: was watching on his iPhone, and if he's not paying
• 4:33
Speaker 1: attention and if his mind drifts, the lighting dims. So
• 4:37
Speaker 1: he just I've never heard of it. That's ai next level.
• 4:41
Speaker 1: They're running our world stuff, and yet Cousins like, I've
• 4:43
Speaker 1: been doing this for ten years. It's what I do.
• 4:45
Speaker 2: He writes out every single play. That's my first thing. Cousins.
• 4:49
Speaker 2: Your thoughts on Cousins?
• 4:50
Speaker 3: Yeah, I was talking to my girlfriend this weekend about
• 4:53
Speaker 3: it and she was asking, like what takeaways I had
• 4:56
Speaker 3: so far? And I was like, I like Cousins a
• 4:59
Speaker 3: lot more than I expected. He's also so much more
• 5:01
Speaker 3: calm and soft spoken. Like the things I know from
• 5:04
Speaker 3: Cousins are you like that the chains on the airplane
• 5:08
Speaker 3: and they go over that. But like he is, he's
• 5:11
Speaker 3: a nice dude, and like he's he's kind of silly,
• 5:14
Speaker 3: like he's wearing the clothes his wife puts out for
• 5:17
Speaker 3: him that morning, and.
• 5:18
Speaker 4: You know, but yeah he does.
• 5:21
Speaker 3: He takes such a beating it's I visibly winced when
• 5:24
Speaker 3: he had his chiropractor there, Like I always think the
• 5:27
Speaker 3: factors are scary, but like the next stuff, Oh my god,
• 5:31
  Speaker 3: I know there's.
• 5:32
Speaker 2: A little moment, and I'll break the fourth wall here.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: There's a little moment where they beat the Bills in
• 5:38
Speaker 1: this dramatic game and he's.
• 5:40
Speaker 2: Walking off the field.
• 5:41
  Speaker 4: Yes, I remember, I.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: Know, I'm sorry your Bill's fin and he looks up
• 5:44
Speaker 1: into the crowd and as everyone's in the screen, hey,
• 5:47
Speaker 1: cool starter jacket man, Like he noticed a starter jacket.
• 5:50
Speaker 2: So I have cousins number in my phone from.
• 5:53
Speaker 1: Like the deep annals of meeting him back probably when
• 5:56
Speaker 1: he was with Washington. So I just sent him a
• 5:58
Speaker 1: text and not expecting a response, being like, best moment
• 6:01
Speaker 1: of the series is when you shout out the guy
• 6:02
Speaker 1: with the starter jacket and he wrote back to me
• 6:04
Speaker 1: and he's like, huge starter jacket.
• 6:06
Speaker 2: Anyone who grew up in our era love starter jackets.
• 6:09
  Speaker 1: I had one.
• 6:09
Speaker 2: I had to call it out. I'm like, yes, that's
• 6:12
  Speaker 2: my first takeaway.
• 6:13
Speaker 1: Second takeaway, I think Patrick Mahomes's wife, Brittany gets a
• 6:18
Speaker 1: bad rap. Everyone seems to think she's annoying when you
• 6:20
Speaker 1: hear her screaming or shit her. I think she comes
• 6:23
Speaker 1: across incredibly well on this thing, and I feel like
• 6:26
Speaker 1: she's a big reason for Patrick Mahomes's success, how committed
• 6:29
Speaker 1: she is to this lifestyle, but also their relationship as
• 6:32
Speaker 1: a whole, how strong it is.
• 6:33
Speaker 3: It doesn't help that the show opens with her being like, Patrick,
• 6:38
Speaker 3: we need to take a photo here, Patrick, let's take
• 6:40
Speaker 3: a photo over here, and he's like, I hate photos,
• 6:42
Speaker 3: and she's like one more over here, over here, and
• 6:45
Speaker 3: like not a great start for her. They did her
• 6:48
Speaker 3: a little dirty with that. But yeah, I didn't realize
• 6:52
Speaker 3: that she was a part owner of a soccer team, Like, yeah, she's.
• 6:56
Speaker 2: I played college soccer.
• 6:58
Speaker 3: Yes, I'm impressed with her. I do like Mariota's wife more.
• 7:02
  Speaker 3: I think I liked her, Like I don't know if
• 7:04
Speaker 3: you've gotten to this episode where she's watching I think
• 7:07
Speaker 3: it's the Falcons forty nine ers game and she's like, oh.
• 7:11
Speaker 4: It's getting spicy in me. She's like swimming in the stands.
• 7:14
  Speaker 4: I loved that.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, I like she also is studying the playbook and
• 7:18
Speaker 1: she knows it better than the Marcus does. She's literally
• 7:21
Speaker 1: reading back plays like double, why is it dragon?
• 7:23
Speaker 2: I'm like what that was amazing.
• 7:25
Speaker 3: One of my favorite moments with plays is when Mahomes
• 7:29
Speaker 3: sits down and he's watching the tape and he takes
• 7:32
Speaker 3: you through the entire thing and he's like, you can
• 7:35
Speaker 3: see because he's lined up a little closer here, and
• 7:38
Speaker 3: when we go in motion, it means they're in a
• 7:40
Speaker 3: zone read and so that means I can throw deep
• 7:44
Speaker 3: to the left, or I can throw the cross or
• 7:46
Speaker 3: on the left like that was one of my favorites too,
• 7:48
Speaker 3: him breaking down that playbook like that.
• 7:50
Speaker 1: I find it really interesting because I work on a
• 7:52
Speaker 1: daily show. Obviously, I work on the Fox Sunday Show.
• 7:56
Speaker 1: I grew up and you always had edge NFL matchup
• 7:59
Speaker 1: around and there's all these sites.
• 8:00
  Speaker 2: Pfff.
• 8:01
  Speaker 1: I didn't I didn't play football at a high level.
• 8:04
  Speaker 1: I didn't coach at a high level. So a lot
• 8:05
Speaker 1: of that X is and oh stuff. And they call
• 8:07
Speaker 1: it lebarros in TV talk where the guy goes to
• 8:10
Speaker 1: the board and Danie Rolotsky will chart it out and
• 8:12
Speaker 1: Brian Boldinger will say, here's what happens.
• 8:14
Speaker 2: Here's how it broke open. It's like almost like calculus.
• 8:17
Speaker 1: To me, or it's speaking you know, a different language
• 8:20
Speaker 1: where I just kind of tune out and I'm like,
• 8:21
Speaker 1: I get it. He gets open and I know it's
• 8:24
Speaker 1: for everyone else for some reason.
• 8:25
  Speaker 2: When Mahomes is.
• 8:26
Speaker 1: The one taking us through it, and when the player
• 8:29
Speaker 1: who actually did it takes us through it, it's much
• 8:32
  Speaker 1: easier to follow.
• 8:32
Speaker 2: And it's really cool. It's like watching chess in a way.
• 8:35
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 8:36
Speaker 3: And he's like pointing out, look at this one person
• 8:39
Speaker 3: on this play, and this is why this is happening.
• 8:42
Speaker 3: It's not like I'm looking at the entire formation and
• 8:45
Speaker 3: trying to see everyone moving. It's just him saying, here's
• 8:48
Speaker 3: one guy. I'm just focused on this and this is
• 8:50
Speaker 3: the thing to look at. And this is how I
• 8:52
Speaker 3: know what defense are and kind of thing.
• 8:54
Speaker 2: I have two more takeaways.
• 8:55
Speaker 1: Third one Mahomes uncensored. You know I'm that dude and
• 9:01
  Speaker 1: mother f this it's all.
• 9:04
  Speaker 2: I don't know if it's almost like he's an actor
• 9:06
  Speaker 2: playing what.
• 9:07
Speaker 1: He thinks like a tough guy man, yet it's authentic.
• 9:11
Speaker 2: I guess, I don't know. He says warm, cuddly, like
• 9:13
Speaker 2: sweetheart of a kid.
• 9:14
Speaker 1: And then he's out there cursing off Max Crosby and
• 9:17
Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, there's a different side of him.
• 9:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, I also love his he he kind of does
• 9:21
Speaker 3: the Andrew Luck thing too, right.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: Yep, good play, good play man.
• 9:25
Speaker 4: Always compliment to Crosby.
• 9:28
Speaker 1: But Nick Bosa, he was like, man, you're great. After
• 9:31
Speaker 1: if you're and He's like, you're outside the box, but
• 9:34
  Speaker 1: you're great. Man.
• 9:36
Speaker 2: That was awesome. And my last takeaway is an open question.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: And this sounds like if we have Good Morning Football
• 9:43
Speaker 1: right now, I would one hundred percent say this would
• 9:46
Speaker 1: be our a block to start off the show.
• 9:48
Speaker 2: The three quarterbacks you would want heading into twenty twenty three.
• 9:53
Speaker 2: Let me give you my three first, and then you
• 9:55
  Speaker 2: can marinate. And if you're a listener, and you're a
• 9:58
Speaker 2: regular listener this podcast, tweet us, tweet me.
• 10:02
  Speaker 1: I don't know.
• 10:03
Speaker 2: I'm outside right now. I got planes flying over me.
• 10:06
  Speaker 2: Here's what I'm thinking. I want Rogers.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: I want this Jets here, whether it's great or whether
• 10:12
Speaker 1: it's terrible, I want Rogers. I feel like this is
• 10:15
Speaker 1: going to be an interesting season for him and for
• 10:17
Speaker 1: the New York Jets and for the New York media market.
• 10:19
Speaker 1: I'd love to see Rogers because they have a hard schedule,
• 10:22
Speaker 1: they have the hard knocks. They also have the extra
• 10:24
Speaker 1: week which is in Canton, Ohio, so they're there early,
• 10:27
Speaker 1: and then you just have this just this amazing thing.
• 10:29
Speaker 2: Okay, so that's Rogers.
• 10:30
Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield third stab at this thing, kind of fighting
• 10:35
Speaker 1: for his career. Baker has things to say. I think
• 10:38
Speaker 1: he is a great character in this league. I don't
• 10:41
Speaker 1: want him to be like relegated to a journeyman or
• 10:44
Speaker 1: a backup moving forward, like this is his last fight,
• 10:47
Speaker 1: and I think Baker has a lot to say.
• 10:49
Speaker 2: The last one is a.
• 10:51
Speaker 1: Guy that I've only met once and it was at
• 10:54
Speaker 1: the combine and I was blown away by him, and
• 10:57
Speaker 1: then he was taken way before where everyone had him
• 10:59
Speaker 1: going in February. Once the draft came into April, I
• 11:03
Speaker 1: think the Anthony Richardson thing in Indianapolis would be really
• 11:05
  Speaker 1: cool because and.
• 11:08
Speaker 2: Fantasy owners do what you will with us. What I
• 11:10
Speaker 2: hear at Indianapolis is like this guy is the super freak.
• 11:14
Speaker 1: This is Yannis coming to the NFL at quarterback six
• 11:18
Speaker 1: foot six doors. The ball a country mile can apparently
• 11:22
Speaker 1: run like he's you know, Jalen Hurts or DeShawn Watson
• 11:25
Speaker 1: in his prime, Like I'm here for it. So the
• 11:27
Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson experience, he's going to be twenty, I think
• 11:30
Speaker 1: when the season starts, and I'm not taking out of
• 11:33
Speaker 1: the possibility that he's starting week one, so I'm fascinating
• 11:36
  Speaker 1: what he's got.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: So those are my three, three very different situations.
• 11:38
Speaker 1: Rogers on this ride, Baker kind of fighting for his
• 11:41
Speaker 1: career and still being Baker Mayfield that you know, the
• 11:44
Speaker 1: same son of a gun that he's always been.
• 11:45
Speaker 2: And then Anthony Richardson, let's get to know this kid.
• 11:47
Speaker 2: Who are your three?
• 11:49
  Speaker 3: So I think I don't I don't want to copy
• 11:51
Speaker 3: what they currently have in terms of the breakdown of
• 11:53
Speaker 3: the three guys, but I think he wants someone who's
• 11:56
Speaker 3: like a competitor and one of the top young guys,
• 12:00
Speaker 3: like a Mahomes. So I feel like a Burrow or
• 12:03
Speaker 3: maybe a Trevor Lawrence would be really interesting. I also
• 12:06
Speaker 3: feel like we don't get a ton of Trevor Lawrence
• 12:10
Speaker 3: stuff right now, and I think he would be really
• 12:12
Speaker 3: interesting to see, So he would probably one of those
• 12:15
  Speaker 3: two would.
• 12:16
Speaker 4: Be my top guy.
• 12:18
Speaker 3: I want someone who Sorry Mariota, but someone who's also
• 12:23
Speaker 3: in that like competing for their job might lose it.
• 12:27
Speaker 3: I like Baker, but we've seen Baker so much. You know,
• 12:32
Speaker 3: he's he's got enough commercials and everything. So I kind
• 12:35
Speaker 3: of want Tannehill, especially like why they've got Levis behind him.
• 12:41
  Speaker 3: I think you know There'shill.
• 12:44
Speaker 2: I had Tannehill on Hard Knocks with the Dolphins ten
• 12:46
  Speaker 2: years ago.
• 12:47
Speaker 4: We've gone ten years ago.
• 12:49
  Speaker 2: Let's go Tannehill.
• 12:50
Speaker 3: Fine, so you get Tannehill, and that also means we
• 12:52
Speaker 3: get vable because some of them have more coach involvement
• 12:55
  Speaker 3: than others.
• 12:56
Speaker 2: Yes, all right, who's your third?
• 12:59
Speaker 3: And then the third I think I would want. I
• 13:04
Speaker 3: think I want Daniel Jones.
• 13:06
Speaker 1: Oh god, you just picked Trevor Lawrence, Ryan, Tannehill, and
• 13:09
Speaker 1: Daniel Jones as the three personalities you want to follow
• 13:13
  Speaker 1: for this season.
• 13:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, maybe not Daniel Jones.
• 13:16
Speaker 1: There I have not gotten a single quote out of
• 13:18
Speaker 1: the last two in their entire careers, and in the
• 13:20
Speaker 1: first got well, Tannehill maybe, but no.
• 13:22
Speaker 2: Come on, Daniel Jones. Lamar, Yes, now we're talking. Give
• 13:27
Speaker 2: me Lamar. I would love to follow Lamar for a year.
• 13:29
Speaker 1: And this is whatever situation. He's in in Baltimore. Sorry
• 13:32
Speaker 1: to shame Daniel Jones there.
• 13:34
Speaker 3: No, I was trying to think of someone who just
• 13:36
Speaker 3: signed a contract, and Lamar is the obvious one.
• 13:39
Speaker 4: I don't know why what with Daniel Jones. I'm to
• 13:41
Speaker 4: New York, I'm in midtown.
• 13:43
Speaker 2: So yeah, I just bullied you into picking Lamar.
• 13:45
Speaker 4: If you want to go Daniel Jones, believe me into
• 13:47
Speaker 4: a better pick I think. So that's next one.
• 13:49
Speaker 1: All right, today's podcast guest. Really excited for this one.
• 13:53
Speaker 1: We're about to hop on with him. The offensive coordinator
• 13:57
Speaker 1: of the Jacksonville Jaguars. You mentioned Trevor Lawrence. Just now,
• 14:00
Speaker 1: here's a guy who was in Trevor Lawrence's ear all
• 14:03
Speaker 1: last year as he took that giantly forward and gosh,
• 14:06
Speaker 1: I'm excited to see what he has to say. This
• 14:08
Speaker 1: is Press Taylor o C of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
• 14:16
Speaker 2: So excited for our guest this week.
• 14:19
Speaker 1: He is the offensive coordinator of one of the best
• 14:22
Speaker 1: young offenses in the league, and he's got a really
• 14:24
Speaker 1: cool career and he's a great all around coach in
• 14:26
Speaker 1: the NFL. With no further ado, Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor.
• 14:32
Speaker 1: Welcome to the season with Peter Schriker.
• 14:33
Speaker 5: Thanks man, thanks for having me.
• 14:35
Speaker 1: Great to have you. You and I have got to know
• 14:38
Speaker 1: each other over the years, but I first became aware
• 14:41
Speaker 1: of your name post Super Bowl and I'm gonna go why.
• 14:46
Speaker 1: And it wasn't because of your amazing relationship with Nick
• 14:49
Speaker 1: Foles or Carson Wentz. When I was doing a deep
• 14:52
Speaker 1: dive post Super Bowl, like the days after, they were
• 14:55
Speaker 1: like the Philly Special, it starts with Press Taylor. Now,
• 14:58
Speaker 1: I know you deflect that that kind of you know,
• 15:01
Speaker 1: it's a team at for the Philly Special. Let's start
• 15:04
Speaker 1: off right there before we go back any further. We
• 15:06
Speaker 1: bring it up to speed. Take us through Press Taylor's
• 15:10
Speaker 1: relationship to the Philly Special, one of the biggest play
• 15:12
Speaker 1: in Super Bowl history.
• 15:13
Speaker 5: Yeah. So, I was the assistant quarterbacks coach in Philly
• 15:17
Speaker 5: that season and one of my jobs was just helping
• 15:20
Speaker 5: Frank Reich, you know, game plan given ideas. Obviously that
• 15:23
Speaker 5: season we lost our starting quarterback late in the year.
• 15:26
Speaker 5: We're rolling with Nick, you know, at the time of
• 15:29
Speaker 5: backup going into the playoff run, Frank Wright comes to
• 15:31
Speaker 5: my office and just to say, you know, we're probably
• 15:34
Speaker 5: gonna need something through this playoff run. Some gadgets, give me,
• 15:37
Speaker 5: give me your best ideas well. One of my things
• 15:39
Speaker 5: all season long is basically a glorified quality control. Being
• 15:42
Speaker 5: an assistant position coach was to watch everything around the
• 15:45
Speaker 5: league all the time. I'm tagging film. I'm tagging cutups
• 15:49
Speaker 5: or coverages or whatever it may be. So I see
• 15:51
Speaker 5: a lot of film and I'd spend money.
• 15:52
Speaker 1: Random, random Browns Ravens game. You're watching it just because
• 15:56
Speaker 1: we might say something.
• 15:57
Speaker 5: I'm watching every plus twenty pass attempt that week. Every
• 16:01
Speaker 5: Monday night. I'd kind of take two hours and just
• 16:03
Speaker 5: watch across the league, different things, explosive plays, red zone passes.
• 16:07
Speaker 5: That's kind of where I got to that one, was
• 16:09
Speaker 5: just watching red zone passes and seeing that, and it
• 16:12
Speaker 5: was like a meaningless twenty. It would have been in
• 16:15
Speaker 5: the twenty sixteen season, like Week seventeen game, I think
• 16:18
  Speaker 5: the Bears are.
• 16:18
Speaker 2: Out of it playing I think it was the Vikings.
• 16:21
Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's Matt Barkley playing quarterback. Alshan's on the field.
• 16:23
Speaker 5: Who's on our team at that time? I tagged it.
• 16:26
Speaker 5: I had five or six other versions of it from
• 16:29
Speaker 5: different teams. We just happened to pick. So I have
• 16:31
Speaker 5: a cutup of you know, ten examples of this thing
• 16:34
Speaker 5: right here. Whatever we're going to call it at the time.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: The same play, very similar.
• 16:38
Speaker 5: Maybe drawn a little differently, you know, maybe not the
• 16:40
Speaker 5: quarterback fake in or whatever it may be. Even college versions,
• 16:44
Speaker 5: we're college rules are different. You can put your hands
• 16:46
Speaker 5: on the center, toss the ball to running back and
• 16:48
Speaker 5: still throw it. In the pros, there's nuances to the
• 16:50
Speaker 5: rules you can't do. So we were kind of massaging
• 16:52
Speaker 5: that as we went, but present these ideas to Frank.
• 16:55
Speaker 5: He's like, I like that one. Let's do that one
• 16:57
Speaker 5: kind of fits some schemes. We run some different presentation
• 17:00
Speaker 5: down that area. So we kind of take it. That's
• 17:03
Speaker 5: before the playoff run. We have the buy where the
• 17:05
Speaker 5: first round seat we get the buy. So we just
• 17:07
Speaker 5: start working it, you know, once or twice a week,
• 17:10
Speaker 5: working our way through it. Carry it through that bye week,
• 17:13
Speaker 5: carry it through the Falcons game, carry it through the
• 17:15
Speaker 5: Vikings game. We have to convince Doug not to call
• 17:17
Speaker 5: it in the Vikings game. In the fourth quarter.
• 17:19
Speaker 1: Let's talk about this. I love this right here. So dogs,
• 17:22
Speaker 1: so we're rolling, You're up thirty points, and let's do
• 17:25
  Speaker 1: the play.
• 17:25
Speaker 5: We'd hit a flea flicker, we'd hit all this stuff.
• 17:27
Speaker 5: Everything's very sim The crowd's going wild, like he's just
• 17:32
Speaker 5: gonna feed the momentum.
• 17:33
Speaker 1: Right here, empty the bag, if you will, exactly.
• 17:36
Speaker 5: And so we're all like, he's I'm gonna go Philly,
• 17:38
Speaker 5: especially guys. Good No, no, no, no, everybody, Mike, grow Johnny.
• 17:42
Speaker 5: We're all screaming in the headset. No no, no, no no,
• 17:44
Speaker 5: We're just save it, save it safe. So then we
• 17:46
Speaker 5: go into we're playing New England and the super Bowl
• 17:49
Speaker 5: and we're practicing. We run. We practice in Philly for
• 17:52
Speaker 5: the first week. Okay, so we're running all our everything,
• 17:55
Speaker 5: we got all our trick plays, everything. We go practice
• 17:58
Speaker 5: at the University of Minnesota in the super Bowl and
• 18:02
Speaker 5: we're in a dome, but we don't practice it ever.
• 18:04
  Speaker 5: We're like, we don't we don't know what's we don't
• 18:06
Speaker 5: know who's around here, who these people are, whatever it
• 18:08
Speaker 5: may be, We're not gonna run.
• 18:09
Speaker 1: There's a hystory of practices, maybe a super Bowl keep
• 18:12
  Speaker 1: it simple.
• 18:13
Speaker 5: Sure, So the only time we rep it the week
• 18:16
Speaker 5: of the Super Bowl is and walk throughs in a
• 18:18
Speaker 5: hotel ballroom where it's just us, just our offensive unit
• 18:21
Speaker 5: in the hotel ball and we walked through it a
• 18:23
Speaker 5: handful of times, but we've been repping it for almost
• 18:25
Speaker 5: a month now, so we kind of worked out some
• 18:27
Speaker 5: kinks and figured it out, and then you know, we
• 18:29
Speaker 5: don't know if he's going to call it. You always
• 18:31
Speaker 5: have these trick plays. Sometimes you carry a trick play
• 18:33
Speaker 5: the whole year and it never gets called. It's not
• 18:35
Speaker 5: the right time, nobody's feeling it, whatever. And then Nick
• 18:38
Speaker 5: kind of spurred the whole thing. You know, Nick comes off,
• 18:40
Speaker 5: We take a time out on fourth and one Nick
• 18:42
Speaker 5: comes off that you want Philly. He called it Philly, Philly, Philly, Philly.
• 18:45
Speaker 5: Doug you know, looks him in the eye and saw
• 18:48
Speaker 5: some convictions. Yeah, let's do it. So that's kind of
• 18:50
Speaker 5: how it all spurred about. But yeah, I mean it's
• 18:53
Speaker 5: a copycat league, like you know, we're all stealing plays
• 18:55
Speaker 5: that we see work and fit our system and then
• 18:57
Speaker 5: turn it into our own.
• 18:58
Speaker 1: It's funny because I remember McVeigh ran it in a
• 19:00
Speaker 1: playoff game, ran a trick play and it was for
• 19:03
Speaker 1: a two point conversion against the Packers, and afterwards, I
• 19:06
Speaker 1: think I said, or maybe it's a regular season game.
• 19:08
Speaker 1: And I sid to Sean, I'm like, that was amazing.
• 19:09
Speaker 1: How'd you draw that up? He's like, oh no, the
• 19:10
Speaker 1: Dolphins right out last week Salvin Akhmed ran it like
• 19:12
Speaker 1: it was the same exact play, Like we just took
• 19:13
Speaker 1: it from when we really liked that they did.
• 19:15
Speaker 5: Was they then Ben Johnson beats the Packers on it
• 19:20
  Speaker 5: last year?
• 19:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, yes he did.
• 19:21
Speaker 5: We ran out to Golden Tate a couple of years
• 19:23
  Speaker 5: back too, exactly.
• 19:24
Speaker 1: So it's like you see it, You're like, what is
• 19:25
Speaker 1: that play? And it's like, no, we just stole from
• 19:27
Speaker 1: someone else. And there's no shame in that, right.
• 19:29
Speaker 5: None at all none. What sir, you're trying to move
• 19:31
  Speaker 5: the ball.
• 19:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right. Your story for the listeners come from, obviously,
• 19:37
Speaker 1: I would say, a football family. Your pops was a coach.
• 19:39
Speaker 1: Your older brother is Zach Taylor who's the head coach
• 19:42
Speaker 1: of Cincinnati Bengals. But your path is not as maybe
• 19:45
Speaker 1: direct as as Zachxpert was. Hey college superstar into coaching,
• 19:49
Speaker 1: and to take the path, you were a high school
• 19:53
Speaker 1: player going in You went to played college, but not
• 19:55
Speaker 1: major division one, am I correct?
• 19:57
Speaker 5: No, I originally went to junior college out of high school.
• 20:00
Speaker 5: So for two gimes. When I'm a six foot tall quarterback,
• 20:02
Speaker 5: I threw for two thousand yards in high school. You know,
• 20:05
Speaker 5: we had a really good pl but mostly skilled players,
• 20:08
Speaker 5: but we were old school under center all that. So
• 20:10
Speaker 5: one highly recruited guy. I had some D two one
• 20:13
Speaker 5: double A offers at the time, but wanted to play
• 20:15
Speaker 5: D one football. So I went to junior college. And
• 20:17
Speaker 5: my brother had gone to junior college the same one actually.
• 20:20
  Speaker 1: But I didn't know that.
• 20:21
Speaker 5: Yeah, so he had, but he had bounced back there.
• 20:23
Speaker 5: He went to Wake Forest out of high school, went
• 20:26
Speaker 5: to Butler, had a lot of success, went on to Nebraska.
• 20:29
Speaker 5: I had a great career there. So we were familiar
• 20:31
Speaker 5: with the staff at Butler, so they recruited me. I
• 20:33
Speaker 5: wanted to play D one, so I wanted to, you know,
• 20:35
Speaker 5: take that opportunity to go and develop a little more.
• 20:38
Speaker 5: So went there, had two great years playing there, really
• 20:41
Speaker 5: enjoyed it, and then went on to Marshall University and played.
• 20:43
Speaker 1: Two years years. Not out of high school though, yeah.
• 20:46
Speaker 5: Yeah, no, not out of high school. So kind of
• 20:48
Speaker 5: developed into that and had had a good experience doing that.
• 20:51
Speaker 5: Spent two years at Marshall University.
• 20:53
Speaker 1: Did you play quarterback at Marshall?
• 20:54
Speaker 5: I did, Yeah, I was really a backup.
• 20:56
Speaker 1: Who are you behind? Were you like left Witch years
• 20:58
Speaker 1: or was it Pennington or after?
• 21:00
Speaker 5: No, I was younger than those guys. Yeah, younger than
• 21:02
  Speaker 5: those guys.
• 21:03
Speaker 1: So you go to Marshall and then careers over in
• 21:06
  Speaker 1: Then what.
• 21:07
Speaker 5: I think I knew early on, I was going to
• 21:09
Speaker 5: coach just kind of my dad was my dad coach.
• 21:11
Speaker 5: My brother was kind of getting into coaching at that
• 21:13
Speaker 5: point coming out, and so knew I was going to coach.
• 21:17
Speaker 5: My brother was at Texa and at the time he
• 21:19
Speaker 5: was like, hey, you can be a volunteer assistant here,
• 21:21
Speaker 5: you know you could. I was trying to get into
• 21:23
Speaker 5: Oklahoma at the time, that's home for us. And then
• 21:26
Speaker 5: my brother knew some people on staff at Tulsa, and
• 21:29
Speaker 5: I knew the head coach I had. My dad grew
• 21:31
Speaker 5: up with the head coach at the time, Bill Blank
• 21:33
Speaker 5: and Chip. So I just sent an email saying, Hey,
• 21:36
Speaker 5: I'd love to get on staff here. I'll wash cars,
• 21:39
  Speaker 5: I'll find a place. I don't need anything, just let
• 21:42
Speaker 5: me sit in your meeting room. And so he just
• 21:44
Speaker 5: sent I spent in this long email. He just responds, Hey,
• 21:47
Speaker 5: come see me. So next morning, jump in my car.
• 21:50
Speaker 5: I'm sitting in front of his office at six o'clock.
• 21:52
Speaker 5: His secretaryis, do you have an appointment? And said no,
• 21:54
Speaker 5: he just said to come see him. I'm here. So
• 21:56
Speaker 5: I just sat there and then we end up talking.
• 21:58
Speaker 5: He's yeah, I got a roll for you, and you
• 22:00
Speaker 5: come to this. I stay with in a basement at
• 22:02
Speaker 5: some family friends And.
• 22:03
Speaker 1: Is that right? So you're living in the basement of
• 22:05
Speaker 1: a family friend's house and you're like, and this is
• 22:08
Speaker 1: for an entry level job at a you know, Tulsa's
• 22:11
Speaker 1: had some years, but it's not exactly Ohio State or Michigan.
• 22:13
Speaker 5: No, not at all. But they'd had some good teams
• 22:15
Speaker 5: and it was a good experience for me. And so
• 22:17
Speaker 5: for the first five months I stayed in my mom's
• 22:20
Speaker 5: sorority sisters family's basement.
• 22:22
  Speaker 1: I love this.
• 22:23
Speaker 5: Didn't get paid and just trying to get some free
• 22:26
Speaker 5: meals and hang out and learn some football.
• 22:27
Speaker 1: Did you have a family at this point or are
• 22:29
  Speaker 1: you so low?
• 22:29
  Speaker 5: No?
• 22:30
Speaker 2: No, no, solo, solo, so nothing to lose.
• 22:32
Speaker 1: I want to be a coach. Yeah, and what a
• 22:34
  Speaker 1: lesson for everybody.
• 22:35
Speaker 5: Right, just just kind of chasing dream, doing whatever is possible,
• 22:38
Speaker 5: and you know, going to work. I just wanted my
• 22:40
Speaker 5: foot in the door. I felt like I could, I
• 22:42
Speaker 5: could earn my keep if I could get my foot
• 22:43
Speaker 5: in the door, and that I was fortunate enough to
• 22:45
  Speaker 5: get that opportunity.
• 22:46
Speaker 1: So then from Tulsa at that position, what's next?
• 22:49
Speaker 5: So I'm at Tulsa for two years. My second year
• 22:51
Speaker 5: at Tulsa, so really I spent that first six months
• 22:54
Speaker 5: with the DFO time director Football Operations, just helping him.
• 22:58
Speaker 5: But I'm in meetings, I'm around all of a sudden,
• 23:00
Speaker 5: the GA that's coaching quarterbacks because we didn't have a
• 23:03
Speaker 5: quarterback coach. The time goes to LSU. He had a
• 23:06
Speaker 5: pre relationship with Steve Kragthorpe. Steve Kragthorpe's the PC at
• 23:10
Speaker 5: LSU at the time, takes this guy with him. Well,
• 23:12
Speaker 5: there's an opportunity now for a GA position in coaching quarterbacks.
• 23:17
Speaker 5: So I was given that opportunity because kind of, you know,
• 23:20
Speaker 5: my four or five months of being there, being around
• 23:23
Speaker 5: those guys, the head coach, we've gotten to know each
• 23:25
Speaker 5: other well, and I guess I'd earned his trust. So
• 23:28
Speaker 5: it gave me this opportunity coach at quarterbacks. So then
• 23:31
Speaker 5: meet my wife my second year there, which I think
• 23:33
Speaker 5: is an important part of my story, but she would
• 23:36
  Speaker 5: say it is.
• 23:38
  Speaker 1: The record.
• 23:39
Speaker 5: Ye, So meet her there, and then the summer before
• 23:44
Speaker 5: my second year at Tulsa, my brother is in his
• 23:47
Speaker 5: first year as a quarterback coach at the Dolphins, or
• 23:50
Speaker 5: he might have been assistant quarterbacks coach time. So we're
• 23:52
Speaker 5: going down on a family trip to Disney World, I
• 23:55
Speaker 5: think it was. So we're hanging out. It's the last
• 23:57
Speaker 5: day there in the office. So I'm just hanging out
• 23:58
Speaker 5: in his office. Well, Chip Kelly comes through. Chip was
• 24:02
Speaker 5: at Oregon at the time, had some NFL interests at
• 24:04
Speaker 5: the time, but was going back to organ So you know,
• 24:08
Speaker 5: we get a chance to talk to one of the
• 24:09
Speaker 5: revolutionary minds and the football time. So we're just firing
• 24:13
Speaker 5: off questions. He leaves the room. We're typing out everything
• 24:16
Speaker 5: you said. Just we're note takers. That's that's kind of
• 24:18
Speaker 5: what we did. When are you talking about how do
• 24:20
  Speaker 5: you practice?
• 24:22
Speaker 1: I want it for the listeners because if you, if you,
• 24:24
Speaker 1: if you just fly in and you're.
• 24:25
  Speaker 4: Like, all right.
• 24:26
Speaker 1: Chip Kelly a coached for the Eagles and Fort Niners
• 24:28
Speaker 1: and whatever he's coach. You see, there was a five
• 24:31
Speaker 1: year window when he was in Oregon where every NFL coach,
• 24:34
Speaker 1: like if you were asked them, who's most innovative offense?
• 24:36
Speaker 1: One in it was Chip Kelly and it wasn't even
• 24:38
  Speaker 1: a question, no.
• 24:39
Speaker 5: Not at all. So this so the chance to sit
• 24:42
Speaker 5: there for three hours with this guy in a room,
• 24:43
Speaker 5: just my brother and I and him and some other
• 24:45
Speaker 5: coaches in and out was invaluable. So we're just firing
• 24:48
Speaker 5: off questions talking all that go our separate ways. That
• 24:51
Speaker 5: was cool. A year later, he ends up taking after
• 24:55
Speaker 5: that season, ends up taking the Eagles job. There's a
• 24:58
Speaker 5: guy on stab at Greg Austin, who was a GA
• 25:01
Speaker 5: form at the time at Oregon, Okay, was actually an
• 25:04
Speaker 5: offensive lineman from a brother at Nebraska. When my brother's
• 25:07
Speaker 5: playing quarterback, Okay, Greg calls me. I'm on a walk,
• 25:11
Speaker 5: you know, along the river in Tulsa with my girlfriend
• 25:13
Speaker 5: at the time. He calls and says, hey, I'm going
• 25:17
Speaker 5: to Philly with Chip. We're talking, We're throwing around names,
• 25:20
Speaker 5: trying to find we need a young guy that can
• 25:22
Speaker 5: work with quarterbacks, can work for nothing as long as
• 25:26
Speaker 5: that we need to and so I said, I'm in.
• 25:28
Speaker 5: They didn't talk about pay, we didn't talk about title,
• 25:30
Speaker 5: we didn't talk about I said I'm there.
• 25:31
Speaker 1: Did you ask your girlfriend on the walk? Are we in?
• 25:34
Speaker 5: You just said at that time I didn't. I said, yeah,
• 25:37
Speaker 5: I'm in it. So I just signed up without knowing
• 25:41
Speaker 5: what was going on, and it worked out. They brought
• 25:43
Speaker 5: me in, ended up getting on staff there, and that
• 25:46
Speaker 5: was kind of how I got my foot in.
• 25:47
Speaker 1: I remember that first, the first summer with Chip, and
• 25:50
Speaker 1: it was like, first of all, you guys are the
• 25:52
Speaker 1: first to like put the geo trackers on every fire,
• 25:54
Speaker 1: and it was like this modern sports science And I'm
• 25:57
  Speaker 1: not mocking at all because I think it's a it's
• 25:58
Speaker 1: the standard now. The time there was about thirty articles
• 26:02
Speaker 1: about it and brought in all these different experts. And
• 26:04
Speaker 1: then the other thing was you got if I'm not mistaken.
• 26:08
Speaker 1: In the quarterbacks room, it was like Bradford Sanchez Tebow like,
• 26:11
Speaker 1: it was everyone right.
• 26:13
Speaker 5: We had everybody roll through there. When we first get there,
• 26:15
Speaker 5: it's Michael Vick, Nick Foles in the room right there,
• 26:18
Speaker 5: and then it goes. We ended up at Barkley Sanchez,
• 26:22
Speaker 5: Sam Bradford. You know, we had a t bow came through.
• 26:24
Speaker 5: We had all these guys kind of rolled through there.
• 26:26
Speaker 5: So it's really cool, you know, looking back on that
• 26:28
  Speaker 5: three year experience.
• 26:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, different quarterback types to work with, right, Like, and
• 26:32
Speaker 1: how does that impact you as a coach or a
• 26:34
Speaker 1: young assistant working with them? Like, Okay, here are five
• 26:37
Speaker 1: different players, five different skill sets, but let's try to
• 26:40
Speaker 1: do what we can to make it work for all
• 26:41
  Speaker 1: of them exactly.
• 26:42
Speaker 5: And we kind of tinkered, you know, we had a
• 26:43
Speaker 5: different starter every year. We kind of tinkered the system
• 26:45
Speaker 5: every single year. And it was that was cool because
• 26:48
Speaker 5: with Chip nothing was off the table. It was what
• 26:50
Speaker 5: can we do? And then you know, the way he teaches,
• 26:54
Speaker 5: the way he thinks, it was very forward thinking. So
• 26:57
Speaker 5: it's fun. You know, we're kind of just a think
• 26:59
Speaker 5: tank of we can try to do whatever we want
• 27:01
Speaker 5: any sort of way.
• 27:02
Speaker 1: So we have how deep would you guys go? Would
• 27:04
Speaker 1: you go to like Division III? Like what do you
• 27:06
Speaker 1: look for when anything? Any high school?
• 27:08
Speaker 5: Should kind of cut his teeth coaching at New Hampshire
• 27:11
Speaker 5: and so it was, you know, we'd watched clips. Here's
• 27:14
Speaker 5: what we did at New Hampshire. We'd have install tapes
• 27:16
Speaker 5: of a New Hampshire play and sometimes you get the
• 27:18
Speaker 5: players looking at you sideways. And then we'd introduce it
• 27:21
Speaker 5: and we'd kind of turn it into our own thing
• 27:23
Speaker 5: and see if it worked. Maybe it'd make it to
• 27:24
Speaker 5: a game, maybe it wouldn't, but we or we just
• 27:27
Speaker 5: get access to it to coaches, and you know, maybe
• 27:29
Speaker 5: it just got left on the cutting room floor, but
• 27:31
Speaker 5: you're seeing all this and you're seeing that football's football,
• 27:34
Speaker 5: regardless of the level. If we can make it work
• 27:36
Speaker 5: in our system and explain it to our guys and
• 27:38
Speaker 5: understand it and teach it, why can't we do it?
• 27:41
Speaker 5: So we were always it felt like just this think
• 27:43
Speaker 5: tank of football, and it was awesome.
• 27:45
Speaker 1: That first year with Chip, and then obviously Chip gets
• 27:48
Speaker 1: shown the door and incomes Doug Peterson. How do you
• 27:51
Speaker 1: stay on staff? How do you ingrain yourself with a
• 27:53
Speaker 1: whole new crew of guys? And I guess for the
• 27:56
Speaker 1: coaching lifeers listening here like is there survivor's guilty for
• 28:00
Speaker 1: something like that, we were like, well, some of my
• 28:02
Speaker 1: guys haven't been knocked out, but I'm still here and
• 28:04
Speaker 1: I've got a family to provide for.
• 28:05
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I mean you know, I'm kind of looking
• 28:08
Speaker 5: i'd gotten married at the time I got married in
• 28:10
Speaker 5: twenty fifteen, that was the year that was Chip's last
• 28:12
Speaker 5: season in Philly. So then Chip goes to San Francisco.
• 28:16
Speaker 5: We're just kind of in limbo as a coaching staff.
• 28:18
Speaker 5: You know, they tell you, hey, you get an opportunity
• 28:20
Speaker 5: to meet with this new coach. See how it goes.
• 28:22
Speaker 5: It's his call. So I'm kind of thinking in the
• 28:24
Speaker 5: back of my mind, like I'm going to have to
• 28:25
Speaker 5: go to San Francisco. And I'm like, I'm newly married,
• 28:28
Speaker 5: I'm a quality control. I'm not making enough money to
• 28:30
Speaker 5: live out in San Francisco, So what am I going
• 28:32
Speaker 5: to do? But I get a chance, obviously sit down
• 28:35
Speaker 5: with coach Peterson. We just talk, kind of share. I
• 28:38
Speaker 5: kind of shared my vision for myself, what I was doing,
• 28:41
Speaker 5: what I want to do, where I came from all this,
• 28:44
Speaker 5: and so he just wanted to keep me and said,
• 28:47
Speaker 5: you know, I'm going to make you the assistant quarterbacks coach,
• 28:49
Speaker 5: which was at the time of promotion and title. I'm
• 28:52
Speaker 5: still a quality control, You're still breaking that. You're doing
• 28:54
Speaker 5: the same stuff. You're just you get to your resume
• 28:57
Speaker 5: sounds a little better.
• 28:58
Speaker 1: It's amazing, and then Chip goes on to San fran
• 29:00
Speaker 1: You stay with these guys and then is that where
• 29:02
Speaker 1: you meet Frank Rake and the rest.
• 29:03
Speaker 5: Yes, So Frank comes in, John d. Filippa comes in
• 29:06
Speaker 5: as the quarterback coach, and it was a little unprecedented
• 29:09
Speaker 5: the time. They kept a lot of us. So Jeff
• 29:12
Speaker 5: Stallin stays Jeff Sallen was brought in by Chip, he
• 29:14
Speaker 5: stays on, Douce Staley stays on, Justin Peel stays on.
• 29:19
Speaker 5: You know, there were a lot of us that kind
• 29:20
Speaker 5: of stuck through. So we there was probably four or
• 29:23
Speaker 5: five of us in the offensive staff room that were holdovers,
• 29:26
Speaker 5: so we had a working relationship. But then that was
• 29:28
Speaker 5: cool because Doug comes in. Doug brings what they're doing
• 29:31
Speaker 5: with Andy. Frank brings in what he's done in his past.
• 29:34
Speaker 5: John d. Flippo had been a coordinator, He brings in
• 29:36
Speaker 5: what he's doing. And then four or five of us
• 29:38
Speaker 5: have this idea of what we'd built with Chip, and
• 29:41
Speaker 5: so we kind of meshed this whole system together and create,
• 29:44
Speaker 5: you know, our offense at that time. So it's there's
• 29:47
Speaker 5: bits and pieces of people say the Andy Reid system,
• 29:49
Speaker 5: the chip spread, whatever it may be. But we just,
• 29:52
Speaker 5: I mean, like you do any season, you just kind
• 29:54
Speaker 5: of form it onto the players you have and what
• 29:56
Speaker 5: you know and what you think presents issues for a defense.
• 30:00
Speaker 1: That rookie year for Wentz goes well, he wins the job,
• 30:03
Speaker 1: and then obviously he's having this MVP season and then
• 30:06
Speaker 1: you go to Los Angeles and this much anticipated battle
• 30:08
Speaker 1: against Goff and he goes down with a knee quickly.
• 30:13
Speaker 1: Carson and you what was your relationship and you know
• 30:16
Speaker 1: the toughness you saw from wins to kind of handle
• 30:19
Speaker 1: that situation where we're gonna go on this ride and
• 30:22
Speaker 1: you're on the team, but gosh, you're not the one
• 30:24
Speaker 1: throwing the passes in the big game.
• 30:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's the tough part of it. Again,
• 30:27
Speaker 5: I'm assistant quarterback coach, so I'm more more or less
• 30:30
Speaker 5: a fly on the wall.
• 30:31
  Speaker 1: Now.
• 30:31
Speaker 5: I'm offering input to Frank and coach Y Filippo and
• 30:34
Speaker 5: all that, and I'm a sounding board for the quarterbacks
• 30:37
Speaker 5: as well. So I got good relationship with all those guys.
• 30:41
Speaker 5: But Carson goes down, Nick steps in. I'd been there
• 30:44
Speaker 5: when we originally had Nick, so Nick was there with Chip.
• 30:47
Speaker 5: We end up, you know, trading Nick for Sam Bradford. Well,
• 30:51
Speaker 5: that Carson's rookie year. Obviously, we trade Sam to Minnesota.
• 30:54
Speaker 5: Carson steps in and ends up starting that rookie year,
• 30:57
Speaker 5: bring Nick back in as the backup in seventeen. So
• 31:00
Speaker 5: we had a previous relationship under a different staff.
• 31:04
Speaker 1: Talk Nick out of retirement, if I'm not mistaken, Yeah.
• 31:06
Speaker 5: I think Nick was borderline retirement there for a while
• 31:09
Speaker 5: after after a stint away Kansas City, Yeah, and then
• 31:12
Speaker 5: came back through. So yeah, so we came in and
• 31:16
Speaker 5: Carson goes down, and then it just kind of quickly
• 31:18
Speaker 5: as an offensive staff, as quick as we could, we
• 31:21
Speaker 5: pivot more to the thing that Nick does well. And
• 31:24
Speaker 5: a lot of that was going back to the success
• 31:26
Speaker 5: he had under Chip. Some of the play action concepts,
• 31:29
Speaker 5: some of the RPO game that we developed in that system,
• 31:33
Speaker 5: we'd still had in our system, and we just kind
• 31:35
Speaker 5: of pulled it back out of the playbook and featured
• 31:37
Speaker 5: it a little bit more, and then we're able to
• 31:39
Speaker 5: kind of create this run with Nick late in the year.
• 31:41
Speaker 1: Yeah. Your relationship with Foals, you guys are tight, right.
• 31:44
Speaker 5: Yeah. So when I got married, my wife comes out.
• 31:48
Speaker 5: Nick's wife and my wife really hit it off. We
• 31:50
Speaker 5: end up having kids at the same time. We both
• 31:52
Speaker 5: have daughters. They end up being close, So really they
• 31:55
Speaker 5: started a friendship. We have a professional relationship and then
• 31:59
Speaker 5: you know, you spend time in the off season when
• 32:01
Speaker 5: they're around, getting dinner together something like that. So we
• 32:03
Speaker 5: developed a friendship through that. Yeah, so that was cool.
• 32:06
Speaker 1: I've said this before. I got killed for it on
• 32:10
Speaker 1: It was after you guys beat the Bears in that
• 32:13
Speaker 1: playoff game, the Cody Parky double dooint game, and I
• 32:15
Speaker 1: came on camera and said, I don't care if it's
• 32:17
  Speaker 1: Tom Brady, I don't care if it's Peyton Manning, I
• 32:18
Speaker 1: don't care who it is. And if I need one
• 32:21
Speaker 1: drive and one game, I think I'm going with Foles.
• 32:24
Speaker 1: And it was one of those deals where an NFL
• 32:26
Speaker 1: network put that out there and it was like a
• 32:28
Speaker 1: press release and it was on Instagram. And I still
• 32:30
Speaker 1: to this day people call me a clown for it,
• 32:32
Speaker 1: and yet I quietly in certain corners, we'll look around
• 32:35
Speaker 1: and be like I stand by like fools. When the
• 32:38
Speaker 1: game was on the line, there was maybe no one
• 32:40
Speaker 1: better than Nick Foles.
• 32:41
Speaker 5: Yeah, he did a great job. He rose the challenge.
• 32:44
Speaker 5: Those two and seventeen, the NFC Championship against Minnesota and
• 32:48
Speaker 5: the Super Bowl against the Patriots are two of the
• 32:50
Speaker 5: best quarterback performances and modern folks to sit there and
• 32:54
Speaker 5: watch him play and yeah, exactly. I mean, I think
• 32:57
Speaker 5: he played as well as anybody has and those two
• 32:59
Speaker 5: and for the moment they were you know, it's not
• 33:01
Speaker 5: just some regular season game this guy pulls and they're
• 33:03
Speaker 5: two of the biggest games and the franchise history at
• 33:06
Speaker 5: the time, and so he to play the way he
• 33:09
  Speaker 5: did was awesome.
• 33:10
Speaker 1: You go to the Colts after the Eagles, that's you know,
• 33:15
Speaker 1: with Frank and then you end up in Jacksonville with
• 33:17
Speaker 1: Doug last year. You get there first time where it's like, Okay,
• 33:22
Speaker 1: yes Doug is an offensive coach, but it's really your offense.
• 33:25
Speaker 1: The change when you get that title and you get
• 33:27
Speaker 1: the opportunity to kind of move that with this young
• 33:29
Speaker 1: quarterback Trevor Lawrence, especially coming off what was just you know,
• 33:35
Speaker 1: a forgettable first season with Trevor, Like, what was that like?
• 33:37
Speaker 1: Going into that That.
• 33:38
Speaker 5: Was fun because it was kind of a clean slate.
• 33:41
Speaker 5: You know, rarely do you walk into a situation where
• 33:43
Speaker 5: you have this first round kid that you know, generational
• 33:45
Speaker 5: talent that gets thrown around a lot.
• 33:47
Speaker 1: But that was it.
• 33:47
Speaker 5: But you know, honestly struggled his rookie year. He's the
• 33:50
Speaker 5: first to admit that. And so but you get this
• 33:53
Speaker 5: basically piece of clay, and the type of kitty is
• 33:55
Speaker 5: obviously becomes a big deal. But you've got a clean
• 33:58
Speaker 5: slate to work with. We've got money to spend that,
• 34:01
Speaker 5: you know, the front office was willing to spend and
• 34:03
Speaker 5: go out and invest in the receivers and the people
• 34:05
Speaker 5: around him. And then again we put together a pretty
• 34:08
Speaker 5: cool coaching staff and kind of made our own system.
• 34:11
Speaker 5: So we take what we'd done in Philly that Doug
• 34:14
Speaker 5: and I are familiar with. Phil Rausher comes in from Minnesota,
• 34:17
Speaker 5: you know, kind of in the coming from the Kubiak system,
• 34:20
Speaker 5: Jim Bob Cooter and Mike McCoy coming from more or
• 34:24
Speaker 5: less the Peyton manning Philip Rivers passing game, which was
• 34:27
Speaker 5: something I was familiar with being with Frank Reich and Indy.
• 34:31
Speaker 5: So we the three of us kind of have our
• 34:33
Speaker 5: own language in the past game. Doug and I have
• 34:35
Speaker 5: our language from Philly. Phil kind of has these revolutionary
• 34:39
Speaker 5: ideas from and on in our world, revolutionary ideas from
• 34:42
Speaker 5: the Kubiak system, the Shanahan thing taking over, and so
• 34:45
Speaker 5: we just kind of put this together and then we
• 34:48
Speaker 5: molded around this really special young quarterback, you know, bringing
• 34:53
Speaker 5: in Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, Evan Ingram, Travis, etn. And
• 34:57
Speaker 5: just kind of tried to have massage it to fit
• 34:58
Speaker 5: our skill set, the skill set of the guys around him,
• 35:01
Speaker 5: and be creative and you know, again with Doug, Doug's
• 35:05
Speaker 5: encouraging us to to think out of the box and
• 35:08
Speaker 5: do whatever we need to do to create the offense
• 35:11
Speaker 5: that we're going to become.
• 35:12
Speaker 1: Two different. Trevor Lawrence questions A when did you first
• 35:16
Speaker 1: see And it could have been the first practice he
• 35:18
Speaker 1: laid eyes on him, like this guy's special. When was
• 35:20
Speaker 1: that moment for you where you're like, ooh, this is
• 35:22
  Speaker 1: something different.
• 35:23
Speaker 5: Yeah. I think just watching him throw through the OTA process,
• 35:27
Speaker 5: just routes on air, it's like this is the ball
• 35:30
Speaker 5: never hits the ground, you know, it's just kind of
• 35:32
Speaker 5: that type of thing where it's on air, that's what
• 35:33
Speaker 5: you'd expect. But you know, he was special in that
• 35:36
Speaker 5: regard and I'd been around really good high picks, you know,
• 35:40
Speaker 5: Michael Vick, Sam Bradford, those type of Carson went. You've
• 35:43
Speaker 5: been around those high picks and you'd seen it and
• 35:45
Speaker 5: you're like, okay, it's on par with that, it's special.
• 35:50
Speaker 5: And then just getting to be around him through the
• 35:52
Speaker 5: off season, you're like, this guy's are really laid back.
• 35:54
Speaker 5: You know, nothing seems to bother him. He doesn't get
• 35:56
Speaker 5: but you don't know, you haven't been in any fire
• 35:58
Speaker 5: with him. Yeah, go through the season, we kind of
• 36:00
Speaker 5: start out highs and lows. You know things are going good.
• 36:03
Speaker 5: We hit a little rough patch, but you believe like
• 36:05
Speaker 5: this guy's and special. But the mindset I think really
• 36:08
Speaker 5: showed up to me particularly was the Baltimore game. That's
• 36:12
Speaker 5: kind of where we started to hit our stride where
• 36:14
Speaker 5: the fourth quarter we need a drive to win the
• 36:15
Speaker 5: game and he looks like he's just playing catch in
• 36:18
Speaker 5: the backyard. You could feel from the press box you
• 36:20
Speaker 5: can feel this momentum building and the way the kid's playing,
• 36:25
Speaker 5: the confidence, the way he's throwing the ball. I mean,
• 36:27
Speaker 5: you're just watching him throw it and you kind of
• 36:29
Speaker 5: know there's a little more conviction in that. You see
• 36:31
Speaker 5: the passion come out and the way we win the
• 36:33
Speaker 5: game and all that. So you start to see that,
• 36:35
Speaker 5: you start to think, like, Okay, this mindset thing with
• 36:38
Speaker 5: the kids real. He is steady, he's even keeled, he's composed,
• 36:43
Speaker 5: but he's passionate, like he is a fiery fighter. And
• 36:46
Speaker 5: that's kind of just what you wanted to see. You
• 36:47
Speaker 5: hadn't really seen it.
• 36:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, and of course you know, the great high school player,
• 36:53
Speaker 1: a great college player. But after the first year of
• 36:55
Speaker 1: the pros, it's like, all right, well that doesn't mean
• 36:56
Speaker 1: anything in the NFL. Sure, And to hear that he's
• 36:59
Speaker 1: a laid back. I don't know Trevor. I've never interviewed him.
• 37:02
Speaker 1: I don't know him, but everyone says he is as
• 37:05
Speaker 1: authentic as it comes. He is who he is. He's
• 37:06
Speaker 1: not trying to put on airs and either you know
• 37:09
Speaker 1: the players, they all love him. So what is that
• 37:12
Speaker 1: quality that you see from him that really makes him
• 37:13
  Speaker 1: stand out?
• 37:14
Speaker 5: That's the big Honestly, we were playing We played golf
• 37:17
Speaker 5: with a couple buddies two or three days ago, and
• 37:19
  Speaker 5: I had a buddy that's a Jags friend that didn't
• 37:21
Speaker 5: know him or anything like that, and we get off
• 37:22
Speaker 5: He's like, is he always like that? Just chill? He said, yeah,
• 37:25
Speaker 5: you know, I've never really seen him lose as cool
• 37:27
Speaker 5: or anything like that. I've seen him getting tense and
• 37:30
Speaker 5: a little more competitive, but he's pretty much just always
• 37:33
Speaker 5: the same guy, even keeled, and I think just the
• 37:36
Speaker 5: authenticity that he carries himself with guys appreciate that. He
• 37:40
Speaker 5: is humble, but he's accountable. You know, if something goes wrong,
• 37:43
Speaker 5: he's the first to say, that's all me. If whether
• 37:46
Speaker 5: it's him or not, he's the quarterback, he's going to
• 37:48
Speaker 5: stand there. He's going to take the arrows for his guys.
• 37:50
Speaker 5: And I think guys see that and guys respond to that.
• 37:52
Speaker 5: I mean, when you know what you're getting out of
• 37:54
Speaker 5: a guy, you know he's got your back, you know
• 37:57
Speaker 5: you're you're willing to fight a little extra for him.
• 37:59
Speaker 5: And I think that's our players saw that from the jump,
• 38:01
Speaker 5: because we brought in a lot of new guys that
• 38:03
Speaker 5: you know, didn't know much about him other than the
• 38:05
Speaker 5: hype and struggles his rookie year. But you know, he
• 38:09
Speaker 5: quickly earned everybody's trust and the way he prepares and
• 38:11
Speaker 5: the way he plays and the way he treats people now.
• 38:13
Speaker 1: I'm going to get you on the board in the
• 38:15
Speaker 1: All twenty two and you're gonna put the filmer on
• 38:18
Speaker 1: your favorite Trevor Lawrence pass of the twenty twenty two season.
• 38:21
Speaker 5: Oh man, there were some special ones. One of the ones,
• 38:25
Speaker 5: I'd say that really kind of part of it was
• 38:27
Speaker 5: the time in the season. Looking back now you realize
• 38:30
Speaker 5: it was a spark. But we go honestly, we beat
• 38:33
Speaker 5: Baltimore in this emotional comeback win. We go to Detroit
• 38:36
Speaker 5: and just get our faces kicked in. I mean, we
• 38:38
Speaker 5: fumble the second play of the game. They just ran
• 38:40
Speaker 5: us up and Trevor gets dinged up pretty good. So
• 38:43
Speaker 5: he's hurt. You know, we thought he tears his acl,
• 38:46
Speaker 5: his ankle something like that. He comes back into this game,
• 38:48
Speaker 5: we're already down thirty, fights his tail off for his guys.
• 38:52
Speaker 5: That was cool to see. Don't practice much of the
• 38:54
Speaker 5: week going. We're playing Tennessee at Tennessee, first time we're
• 38:57
Speaker 5: playing them in season. So he's banged up. Yeah, so
• 39:00
Speaker 5: he's banged up. We're not sure if he's going to play.
• 39:02
  Speaker 1: C J.
• 39:03
Speaker 5: Betherd's ready to roll all week. You know, come Friday,
• 39:06
Speaker 5: Trevis's I'm playing I'm good to go. So he comes
• 39:08
Speaker 5: out again. We're trying to limit movements with him, protect
• 39:11
Speaker 5: him a little bit. Well, you know, we just kind
• 39:14
Speaker 5: of start rolling as an offense, throwing the ball over
• 39:16
Speaker 5: the yard. We have a short, little five yard in
• 39:18
Speaker 5: route to Evan Ingram singled up on the outside or
• 39:21
Speaker 5: runner two by two, So he's outside at number one,
• 39:23
Speaker 5: just gonna run a five yard in banging a completion.
• 39:25
Speaker 5: Keep this change moving well, Trevor pumps him. Trevor gives
• 39:28
Speaker 5: him a double move, just feeling something at the time.
• 39:30
Speaker 5: You know, he'd been playing really well throughout the game.
• 39:33
Speaker 5: Throws a double move. Evan doesn't necessarily win right away,
• 39:37
Speaker 5: but Trevor puts in a spot where Evan's got a
• 39:39
Speaker 5: chance to go get it, make a play that kind
• 39:41
Speaker 5: of just right there showed you the confidence, the ownership
• 39:44
Speaker 5: he had in the system himself. You know, I think
• 39:47
Speaker 5: that game, he's thirty of forty two for three ninety
• 39:50
Speaker 5: and three touchdowns, playing on a bad ad play on
• 39:52
Speaker 5: a game we didn't even know if he'd play it,
• 39:54
Speaker 5: and that really sparked us. I think that kind of
• 39:56
Speaker 5: kicked us into a five six game win streak or
• 39:58
Speaker 5: something like that at the time.
• 39:59
Speaker 1: And it also shows the ceiling right like or the
• 40:02
Speaker 1: unlimited like oh wait, he could do.
• 40:04
Speaker 5: That exactly, and the confidence to do it. You know,
• 40:06
Speaker 5: that's not something we necessarily we talked about, hey, you've
• 40:08
Speaker 5: got the green when I coached to do that, not necessarily,
• 40:11
Speaker 5: but he doesn't. He gives him a pump. He has
• 40:13
Speaker 5: faith in his guys and he can throw it right
• 40:15
Speaker 5: where he wants to throw it and guy makes a play.
• 40:17
Speaker 5: So that for us as a coaching staff was like, Okay,
• 40:20
Speaker 5: this guy's special. There's something different. He believes in this
• 40:22
Speaker 5: his teammates. That was a big turning point for our
• 40:26
Speaker 5: season there with that throw. But you know, there's a
• 40:28
Speaker 5: number of other throws that you know in the Dallas
• 40:30
Speaker 5: late in the Dallas game, I think it's fourth down,
• 40:32
Speaker 5: he scrambling, he throws when it goes basically threw a
• 40:35
Speaker 5: guy's hands over his head, hit Zay Jones, keeps us rolling,
• 40:38
Speaker 5: walk off field, go. There are a couple things like
• 40:40
Speaker 5: that that I could name a few that were just
• 40:43
  Speaker 5: special type throws.
• 40:45
Speaker 1: And the potential for him unlimited.
• 40:47
Speaker 5: Yeah, unlimited. I would I wouldn't put a ceiling on it,
• 40:50
Speaker 5: just athletically where he is mentally where he is. You know,
• 40:54
Speaker 5: hopefully we can keep this core together with him to
• 40:56
Speaker 5: continue to grow around him because they all play really
• 40:58
Speaker 5: well together. But you know, it's really fun to see
• 41:02
Speaker 5: him just want to come in every single day and
• 41:05
Speaker 5: get better and be a better play. That's the way
• 41:07
Speaker 5: he attacks it and the way he carries himself.
• 41:09
Speaker 1: I know how close you are with your brother Zach.
• 41:11
Speaker 1: Do you guys ever you know, whether you're hanging out
• 41:14
Speaker 1: at the family having a barbecue or just texting him like,
• 41:17
Speaker 1: my guy's better than yours, Trevor would be Burrow, And
• 41:20
Speaker 1: do you ever go like that way? Does it ever
• 41:21
Speaker 1: get to that point where you guys like this is
• 41:23
Speaker 1: my dude, that's really let's go.
• 41:26
Speaker 5: I think we both I think it's both clear we
• 41:28
Speaker 5: love the guy we're coaching right now. It's never come
• 41:31
Speaker 5: down to my guys better than your guy. But I
• 41:33
Speaker 5: think both of us would would stand on the table
• 41:35
Speaker 5: for the guy we have right now. But it's fun
• 41:37
Speaker 5: to see. I mean, we're just getting to work with
• 41:39
Speaker 5: these two guys that are a special point in their
• 41:41
  Speaker 5: career right now.
• 41:42
Speaker 1: And what a cool test when it is to your
• 41:43
Speaker 1: family that you've got two brothers, and both of you
• 41:46
Speaker 1: guys are in the ears of maybe the best two
• 41:48
Speaker 1: young quarterbacks under a certain age in the NFL. And
• 41:52
Speaker 1: your dynamic with Zach, like, are you watching games and
• 41:55
Speaker 1: looking at like the corner of your eye at the scoreboard,
• 41:56
Speaker 1: either rooting for him, we're doing against Like, are you
• 41:58
Speaker 1: keeping an eye on what they're doing too?
• 41:59
Speaker 5: Absolutely, that's my brother. I'm his biggest fan. So unless
• 42:05
Speaker 5: it hinders the jag in some way, I'm rooting for
• 42:08
Speaker 5: the Bengals always. So I always kind of keep an
• 42:09
Speaker 5: eye on where the scores are in their games. Whenever
• 42:12
Speaker 5: I get a chance, in between a drive and between
• 42:14
Speaker 5: a quarter, whatever it may be, when my attention doesn't
• 42:17
Speaker 5: have to be dialed in, you kind of catch the
• 42:19
Speaker 5: scoreboard and say, oh, they're winning by four, they're in
• 42:21
Speaker 5: a tight game, whatever it may be. You just keep
• 42:23
Speaker 5: an eye on it. When we get a chance, we're
• 42:25
Speaker 5: not playing at the same time, I've got it on
• 42:27
Speaker 5: I'm watching the Bengals.
• 42:28
Speaker 1: What makes you guys different from each other? Obviously you
• 42:31
Speaker 1: see the last name, and you see that you guys
• 42:33
Speaker 1: both wanted to coach, and like your father, you're both
• 42:35
Speaker 1: coaching offenses and you're doing a great job at the
• 42:37
Speaker 1: NFL the highest level. What separates the two of you
• 42:39
Speaker 1: or what would you both say, Hey, if you look
• 42:41
Speaker 1: in the mirror, this is a long different than Zach.
• 42:43
  Speaker 5: That's a good question. Honestly, I don't know. We've never
• 42:46
Speaker 5: worked together. You know, we've always shared ideas. I design,
• 42:49
Speaker 5: not necessarily I'd love to work with them at some
• 42:51
Speaker 5: point in time. I think that'd just be cool for
• 42:53
Speaker 5: us to get a chance to work together. But you know,
• 42:56
Speaker 5: our path is just never the right time to kind
• 42:58
Speaker 5: of get together. You know, he was a first taking
• 43:01
Speaker 5: his job as a first year coach, and you know,
• 43:03
Speaker 5: when I was coming out of Philly, it wasn't really
• 43:06
Speaker 5: he had two tough years in Cincinnati. It wasn't really
• 43:08
Speaker 5: the right time to bring your brother in and double
• 43:10
Speaker 5: down on that. So, you know, that one something that
• 43:13
Speaker 5: ever really came up. We never talked about, you know,
• 43:15
Speaker 5: doing this, not doing this. It was just I've got
• 43:18
Speaker 5: my path, you've got your path. Let's do our thing
• 43:20
Speaker 5: and root for each other from far. If it works
• 43:22
Speaker 5: out in the future, that would be awesome. But uh,
• 43:25
  Speaker 5: I'm not I don't know if I could say what's
• 43:27
Speaker 5: necessarily different. We have a very similar demeanor. We've kind
• 43:31
Speaker 5: of come up in different paths, but at the same time,
• 43:33
Speaker 5: our paths have crossed and weird ways where we've been
• 43:36
Speaker 5: exposed to the same systems through different people. But you know,
• 43:40
Speaker 5: I think just the the element of like our environments
• 43:43
Speaker 5: are different at this point in time. So it's you know,
• 43:45
Speaker 5: he's doing what he needs to do to be the
• 43:47
Speaker 5: best coach for the Bengals, and I'm doing what I
• 43:49
Speaker 5: need to do to be the best office coordinator for
• 43:51
Speaker 5: the Jaguars. So you know, our offense is pivot at
• 43:54
Speaker 5: certain times, and whatever that may be is what it
• 43:56
Speaker 5: needs to be. We have different terminology. I know that
• 43:59
Speaker 5: we share enough ideas that I hear him talk and
• 44:02
Speaker 5: things sound different. But I watched them play and we
• 44:04
Speaker 5: run that play. You know, I may ask question about
• 44:06
Speaker 5: how you're coaching this one and steal some ideas off
• 44:09
Speaker 5: him because I have access to him.
• 44:11
Speaker 1: So Yeah, one of the things I loved about Zach
• 44:14
Speaker 1: last year. We've always you know, he had the Super
• 44:16
Speaker 1: Bowl run and then the obviously the horrible situation against Buffalo,
• 44:20
Speaker 1: and then you know, Zac should a little edge afterwards
• 44:23
Speaker 1: about the coin toss and all that stuff, and a
• 44:25
Speaker 1: little attitude kind of embodied like, hey, we're not the
• 44:27
Speaker 1: old Bengals, will you push us around anymore? Did you
• 44:30
Speaker 1: see that always from him, because that's the first time
• 44:32
Speaker 1: I think football fans saw that from Zach where there's
• 44:34
Speaker 1: a little bit of bite to him too.
• 44:35
Speaker 5: Oh. Absolutely, there's so much that you know, he to
• 44:40
Speaker 5: an extent lets people in, but he really it's coach
• 44:42
Speaker 5: speak when he's in front of people and in front
• 44:44
Speaker 5: of the media and things like that, which most guys are.
• 44:47
Speaker 5: So I know, I know the fiery competitive guy he is,
• 44:51
Speaker 5: and probably in front of his team too that they know,
• 44:54
Speaker 5: and you know, I've seen it as a competitor him
• 44:56
Speaker 5: growing up and watching him coach and talking to him,
• 44:59
Speaker 5: and you know, I know how aggressive his demeanor is,
• 45:01
Speaker 5: his mindset is, and then I also see what he
• 45:04
Speaker 5: puts in front of the media and all that. So
• 45:05
Speaker 5: I don't know that people have seen the true Zach
• 45:08
Speaker 5: that he presents in front of his team or that
• 45:10
Speaker 5: I know him as, but certainly proud of the way
• 45:13
Speaker 5: he presents himself and you know where he's gotten his
• 45:16
Speaker 5: team at this point.
• 45:17
Speaker 1: Dude, it's so cool that you're both doing it, obviously,
• 45:19
Speaker 1: but on an individual level. Your path has been great too,
• 45:22
Speaker 1: and now you're at this point and we look at
• 45:24
Speaker 1: this Jaguars team heading into twenty twenty three, just to
• 45:26
Speaker 1: bring it up to speed, a sexy pick for a
• 45:29
Speaker 1: lot of people, like it was there. They're on the cusp,
• 45:32
Speaker 1: they had Kansas City on the ropes. What's the message
• 45:35
Speaker 1: to the team going into twenty twenty eight three and
• 45:37
Speaker 1: is it one of those where it's like, don't read
• 45:39
Speaker 1: the headlines, just worry about ourselves.
• 45:40
Speaker 5: Yeah. I think we've always kind of been that way,
• 45:42
Speaker 5: even last year when we started out, and a lot
• 45:45
Speaker 5: of it stems from coach Peterson. You know, he's the
• 45:47
Speaker 5: same positive, optimistic, consistent guy every single day in front
• 45:51
Speaker 5: of the team, and we've always kept the focus on us.
• 45:54
Speaker 5: You know, we don't care if people are saying we're
• 45:55
Speaker 5: the same old Jaguars. Oh this is a new age thing.
• 45:58
Speaker 5: You know, they're they're up and coming team. None of
• 46:00
Speaker 5: that matters to us because the coolest thing about this
• 46:03
Speaker 5: thing is, you know, you got to go prove it
• 46:04
Speaker 5: for three hours every Sunday, and so none of it
• 46:07
Speaker 5: matters whether you're hyped, favored, underdog, whatever it may be.
• 46:11
Speaker 5: And our guys we have really high character players that
• 46:14
Speaker 5: understand that, and everybody kind of wants to prove that
• 46:17
Speaker 5: Sunday that we're ready to roll and we have an
• 46:19
Speaker 5: opportunity to win and we can put our best foot forward.
• 46:21
Speaker 5: So our focus has solely been on getting better, and
• 46:24
Speaker 5: that's the message from Coach Peterson. That's the message we
• 46:27
Speaker 5: relate to our players. That's the cool thing is you
• 46:29
Speaker 5: hear them say that. You know, we hear the expectations.
• 46:32
Speaker 5: It's hard not to hear all that. But I don't
• 46:34
Speaker 5: think any of it matters to our guys at this
• 46:36
Speaker 5: point in time, because at the end of the day,
• 46:38
Speaker 5: they're going to kick them all off on Sunday and
• 46:40
Speaker 5: you're going to see who the better team is or
• 46:42
Speaker 5: who's going to come out on top of that game.
• 46:48
Speaker 1: Let me ask you, as we're in July right now,
• 46:52
Speaker 1: you know, I remember when Robert Griffin and I kind
• 46:54
Speaker 1: of had that big breakout year. The following off season,
• 46:57
Speaker 1: there are a lot of articles about defensive coordinators spending
• 47:00
Speaker 1: the off season kind of constructing ways to stop whatever
• 47:03
Speaker 1: the Shanahans had built for Robert Griffin, and you know,
• 47:05
Speaker 1: there was a lot of copycat We were in the
• 47:07
Speaker 1: league with that. As an offensive coordinator, what do you
• 47:11
Speaker 1: do during the off season to improve your skills to
• 47:14
Speaker 1: get your offense even better? And is there a certain
• 47:17
Speaker 1: point where you're like, all right, I need to have
• 47:20
Speaker 1: this as vacation, but hey, I got to get in
• 47:22
Speaker 1: the lab. Also, this offense announced my time to do it.
• 47:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, you're constantly doing it. From the moment the season ends,
• 47:28
Speaker 5: you kind of do your exit interviews, you sit down
• 47:30
Speaker 5: with your staff and we kind of mapped out.
• 47:32
  Speaker 1: You know.
• 47:32
Speaker 5: It ended up being we started like, all right, let's
• 47:35
Speaker 5: find five things we really need to improve as an offense,
• 47:37
Speaker 5: you know, whatever that may be. As the off season
• 47:39
Speaker 5: went involved, I think right now we had like nineteen
• 47:41
Speaker 5: points of we need to do better at this. Okay,
• 47:44
Speaker 5: what does that mean? That could be That's what we
• 47:47
  Speaker 5: ended up with.
• 47:47
Speaker 1: I love this, not twenty nineteen.
• 47:50
Speaker 5: And it goes on. It just evolves, you know, it's far.
• 47:53
Speaker 5: It just ended up that way of and it could
• 47:56
Speaker 5: be one hundred. You know, there's all these little sub
• 47:58
Speaker 5: points off of it. But from we need to improve
• 48:01
Speaker 5: our short yards, we need to eliminate our negative runs.
• 48:03
Speaker 5: You know. I think at the end of the day,
• 48:04
Speaker 5: we were one of the most explosed offenses, but we're
• 48:07
Speaker 5: one of the most We may have led the league
• 48:10
Speaker 5: and negative plays on first and second half, so we
• 48:12
Speaker 5: were extremely volatile. We could get ourselves out of it.
• 48:15
Speaker 5: We'd get in first and ten, go to second, and
• 48:17
Speaker 5: twelve to go to first and ten. So we'd get
• 48:20
Speaker 5: ourselves out of these holes because we have these players
• 48:22
Speaker 5: that could do special things. But like, we need to
• 48:24
Speaker 5: identify how we can get better at this, and we've
• 48:26
Speaker 5: kind of gone about that our own certain way. Part
• 48:29
Speaker 5: of us just evaluating who we are, what we did,
• 48:32
Speaker 5: what worked, what didn't work, What do we want to
• 48:34
Speaker 5: continue to invest in, what do we want to you know,
• 48:36
Speaker 5: maybe put aside we thought we'd be great at that,
• 48:37
Speaker 5: we're not. Let's put that aside and hut our losses
• 48:40
Speaker 5: and move forward. Where can we add who's doing something
• 48:43
Speaker 5: that looks similar to the way we play the game,
• 48:46
Speaker 5: or has similar players. How are they using their players
• 48:49
Speaker 5: that's maybe we don't have in our system at this
• 48:51
Speaker 5: point in time, or we have in our system we
• 48:54
Speaker 5: just hadn't thought to do it that way.
• 48:55
  Speaker 1: We need them.
• 48:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, So you know that's the fun part of it
• 49:00
Speaker 5: right now is more than ever in football, you have
• 49:03
Speaker 5: access to so much. You know, everybody's watching, everybody's watching everybody.
• 49:07
Speaker 5: You can watch all of college, all the college teams
• 49:10
Speaker 5: out there, what they're doing Twitter. You see some crazy
• 49:14
Speaker 5: high school D three play no ideas off the table,
• 49:17
Speaker 5: and you can you have access to all that. You
• 49:18
Speaker 5: can see, all that, you can read these articles, you
• 49:20
Speaker 5: can listen to podcast of guys' philosophies and how they
• 49:23
Speaker 5: got to where they got to. And so you know,
• 49:27
Speaker 5: I've been asked a couple of what's your hobby. What
• 49:29
Speaker 5: do you like to do? I like football, So I
• 49:31
Speaker 5: like to watch football, listen to football, if an old
• 49:34
Speaker 5: games on NFL. My wife got on me the other day,
• 49:35
  Speaker 5: she said, it's.
• 49:36
  Speaker 1: The Office Network.
• 49:38
Speaker 5: I watched the twenty sixteen Cowboys Week fifteen game that's
• 49:42
Speaker 5: on it, whatever it was, And you know.
• 49:45
Speaker 1: It's just stress you and me. Exactly last week. Last week,
• 49:50
Speaker 1: I was at the thing for Fox, and I go
• 49:52
Speaker 1: up to Greg Olsen and Kevin Burkhart and I'm like,
• 49:54
Speaker 1: I was up this week. I'm like, you guys called
• 49:57
Speaker 1: a game a couple of years ago Patriots Colts, and
• 50:00
Speaker 1: I think you were probably coaching in it. It was a
• 50:01
Speaker 1: Saturday game and I'm like, you guys did a really
• 50:03
Speaker 1: nice job. And Burkhart looks at me, He's like, why
• 50:05
Speaker 1: are you watching that? Are you watching that? It's June?
• 50:07
Speaker 1: Why are you watching that?
• 50:08
  Speaker 5: Like, I don't know.
• 50:09
Speaker 1: And I loved it.
• 50:10
  Speaker 5: It's worked, obviously, but that's it's fun. That's what I
• 50:12
  Speaker 5: enjoyed doing.
• 50:13
  Speaker 1: It's also a drug.
• 50:14
Speaker 5: I love it. I'm listening to podcast. I texted you
• 50:17
Speaker 5: the other day that I was listening. I was watching
• 50:18
Speaker 5: your YouTube with you and Kellen doing this thing. And
• 50:21
Speaker 5: you know, I'm trying to pick nuggets. Every time I
• 50:23
Speaker 5: hear kill and say something insightful, I go to my notes,
• 50:25
Speaker 5: throw it in there or something whatever it may be.
• 50:28
Speaker 5: So that's the fun part of it right now, is
• 50:29
Speaker 5: you constantly learn, you can constantly grow, constantly evolve, and
• 50:33
Speaker 5: if there's something I think can help our team, then
• 50:35
Speaker 5: I'll steal it. I'll take it. I'll turn it into
• 50:37
Speaker 5: ours and present a target.
• 50:39
Speaker 1: Let's do a little rapid fire here. Your father was
• 50:42
Speaker 1: obviously a legendary high school coach who was your greatest
• 50:48
Speaker 1: mentor in this profession. Would you say it's your pops.
• 50:51
Speaker 5: I would say it's my brother, just because now my
• 50:53
Speaker 5: dad was coaching, but he got out of coaching before
• 50:57
Speaker 5: I was even born, so he coached justice, but he
• 50:59
Speaker 5: wasn't coaching college at the time. So my brother and
• 51:03
Speaker 5: I have My brother's obviously five years older than me.
• 51:05
Speaker 5: He's always been ahead of it, so he was always
• 51:08
Speaker 5: kind of could call him and you know, how do
• 51:10
Speaker 5: I deal with this coming up, because maybe he went
• 51:12
Speaker 5: through it before, So I would say him, and then
• 51:14
Speaker 5: Frank Craich and Doug Peterson are certainly two other names
• 51:17
Speaker 5: that you know in Chip Kelly's influence on me, I
• 51:20
Speaker 5: would say that's that's never really left my mind and
• 51:22
Speaker 5: stuff like that. So those those guys, you know, my
• 51:25
Speaker 5: brother and Frank are probably too that I talked to
• 51:27
Speaker 5: the most. And then obviously Doug. I can walk around
• 51:29
Speaker 5: the corner and talked about who.
• 51:31
Speaker 1: Is the player that you've coached that you've looked at
• 51:33
Speaker 1: and said that that's just the biggest physical freak I've
• 51:35
Speaker 1: ever been around, and this is this is a special dude.
• 51:38
Speaker 5: That I've coached. I mean Michael Vick.
• 51:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, at that even at that age.
• 51:42
Speaker 5: I'm twenty four years old, when I get in the NFL,
• 51:44
Speaker 5: I've played with Michael Vick on Madden for ten years
• 51:47
Speaker 5: before that, and that was the one. You know, you're
• 51:49
Speaker 5: not allowed to play with him. It's different.
• 51:50
Speaker 1: No, yeah, him and Algae Crumpler and Brian Finneran you
• 51:53
Speaker 1: cannot play with that team. Yeah, I think that. I
• 51:55
Speaker 1: think it was for Madden, yes, yeah.
• 51:57
Speaker 5: So so Michael Vick was the one that's like, this
• 52:00
Speaker 5: guy is a moss. Just the way he throws the football,
• 52:02
Speaker 5: the way he moves effort like that was really you know,
• 52:06
Speaker 5: of being on the field with watching them day and
• 52:08
Speaker 5: day out. Just a physical freak. Jason Peters, you know,
• 52:12
Speaker 5: left tackle for the Eagles, one of those guys is
• 52:14
Speaker 5: just his ability to move another grown man was incredible.
• 52:18
Speaker 5: And then the thing I tell people too is as
• 52:21
Speaker 5: a coach, the opponent when we went to in twenty seventeen,
• 52:24
Speaker 5: we went to Carolina on a Thursday night and watching
• 52:27
Speaker 5: Julius Peppers and Cam Newton run out of the tunnel,
• 52:30
Speaker 5: it was just like, wait, what are those two like.
• 52:33
Speaker 1: They belong on the same as the others.
• 52:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, they were just athletics specimens. So it was
• 52:39
Speaker 5: cool to see. It's just cool to you know, get
• 52:41
Speaker 5: to be on field level with those guys and see
• 52:43
Speaker 5: those guys every single week.
• 52:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, your favorite play call that you've made that you
• 52:48
Speaker 1: take pride in and you're like, all right, that was
• 52:50
Speaker 1: kind of unique and you haven't seen that everywhere. If
• 52:52
Speaker 1: you can go into the annals of the Press Taylor
• 52:54
  Speaker 1: play call history.
• 52:56
Speaker 5: Well, another big one was the Chargers playoff game. You know,
• 53:00
Speaker 5: we we were kind of making this comeback. We score,
• 53:03
Speaker 5: we're about to kick their point, they get a penalty,
• 53:05
Speaker 5: balls on the one. Doug says, let's go for two.
• 53:08
Speaker 5: We've got a little screen called out to Evan Ingram.
• 53:10
Speaker 5: It's got a at the time because it's short yardage,
• 53:13
Speaker 5: goal line played, it's got to kill on it for
• 53:15
Speaker 5: Trevor to sneak it. Well, you know it's on the one.
• 53:18
Speaker 5: It's two point play, I'm saying, and I head say, hey,
• 53:20
Speaker 5: no kill, just throw the screen, let's roll, and Trevor
• 53:23
Speaker 5: kind of just you know, Trump's everything dives in the
• 53:25
Speaker 5: end zone. Nobody's blocking the sneak for him. You know,
• 53:28
Speaker 5: he does it all on his own. The line's not cutting,
• 53:30
Speaker 5: nothing like that. So that was one of those ones.
• 53:32
Speaker 5: It's like that worked out well everything, you know, moment
• 53:35
Speaker 5: I told him not to do it, he does it.
• 53:37
Speaker 2: You know, that's kind of where you'll take it.
• 53:39
Speaker 5: A little player with momentum kind of do his thing
• 53:41
Speaker 5: right now. You don't want to take a stinger away,
• 53:43
Speaker 5: and he was feeling it. He made a play. So
• 53:45
Speaker 5: that was the one that's like, I don't know if
• 53:46
Speaker 5: that's a great play call. It obviously was not, but
• 53:49
Speaker 5: he made it work, and so that was a cool
• 53:51
Speaker 5: one to be a part of him. Like, all right,
• 53:52
Speaker 5: things are hitting here.
• 53:53
Speaker 1: So were you in so far? For when the Rams
• 53:56
Speaker 1: played the Bengals in the Super Bowl two years ago,
• 53:58
Speaker 1: I was where were you seated? Let me hear everything.
• 54:01
Speaker 5: I had just gotten the job here. So I signed
• 54:03
Speaker 5: my contract on like Thursday, and I tell Doug like,
• 54:07
Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I'm enough to miss Monday, Like I got
• 54:09
Speaker 5: to go to the Super Bowl, so, you know, second
• 54:11
Speaker 5: day of work, I'm asking for the day off, all
• 54:13
Speaker 5: ready to go out there and celebrate or watch my
• 54:16
Speaker 5: brother kind of you know, in the biggest game of
• 54:18
Speaker 5: his career. So we're out there. You know, they've got
• 54:20
Speaker 5: a suite for the family. We're in Beyonce, jay z
• 54:24
Speaker 5: or Beyonce maybe just they are three suites down. My
• 54:27
Speaker 5: sister's waving at her all this stuff. So that was
• 54:30
Speaker 5: a really cool experience just getting to be there for that,
• 54:33
Speaker 5: watching them play, you know, come down to the very end.
• 54:35
Speaker 5: That was a cool experience for our family to be
• 54:37
Speaker 5: able to sit there and see that and watch that.
• 54:40
Speaker 1: Yeah, your Eagles Super Bowl Parade memory is what I mean.
• 54:44
Speaker 5: I tell people that was probably the most fun I've
• 54:47
Speaker 5: ever had in coaching. You know, people say it was.
• 54:48
Speaker 1: The super game, the parade.
• 54:50
Speaker 5: The game is so stressful. To see the confetti fall,
• 54:53
Speaker 5: it's it's almost just relief at that point it's over.
• 54:56
Speaker 5: We did it. The parade as you wake up in
• 54:58
Speaker 5: the morning and you know we're about to go out
• 55:00
Speaker 5: to a million screaming fans celebrating us, yelling at us
• 55:04
Speaker 5: all the time. So the parade was awesome. I remember
• 55:07
Speaker 5: Joe Douglas were on different floats, but seeing him at
• 55:10
Speaker 5: the end, when we get to the Rocky steps and
• 55:13
Speaker 5: all that, seeing him he's got a big gash on
• 55:14
Speaker 5: his face. I guess he didn't know. A fan throws
• 55:17
Speaker 5: him a big beer can, hits him in the face,
• 55:18
Speaker 5: cuts his face. You know, I think he was excited
• 55:21
Speaker 5: about it. He didn't care at the time. Stuff like that.
• 55:24
Speaker 5: Just those memories of seeing all that Jason Kelsey's speech
• 55:27
Speaker 5: and the Momber's outfit, you know, Fletcher Cox trying to
• 55:30
Speaker 5: talk and people getting them off the stage, just things
• 55:32
Speaker 5: like that that you just remember, and that was a
• 55:35
Speaker 5: really special day for us.
• 55:37
Speaker 1: It's a special team. I feel like that was like
• 55:39
Speaker 1: a really cool team that was of that model where
• 55:42
Speaker 1: there was these homegrown guys, but they also went and
• 55:45
Speaker 1: acquired guys like Alshon Jeffery, and they acquired you know,
• 55:49
Speaker 1: jay A Jayi at mid season and they put it
• 55:52
Speaker 1: all together and then the Eagles almost overnight they're in
• 55:55
Speaker 1: Super Bowl again with a whole new crew, but they
• 55:57
Speaker 1: still have some of those holdovers from that guy, that
• 56:00
Speaker 1: twenty seventeen team. When you look back on it, did
• 56:02
Speaker 1: you know at the time it was as special as
• 56:04
  Speaker 1: it was?
• 56:05
Speaker 5: You know, I think midway through the year you started
• 56:08
Speaker 5: to feel there's something special going on. Offense was kind
• 56:10
Speaker 5: of hitting our stride. The end of the defense. We
• 56:12
Speaker 5: had a top five defense that year. We had talent
• 56:14
Speaker 5: across the board, We had the right veterans on the
• 56:16
Speaker 5: right spot. There was great leadership on that team, so
• 56:20
Speaker 5: you kind of saw I think early on we didn't know,
• 56:22
Speaker 5: you know, we we we're one on one coming back
• 56:25
Speaker 5: from a tough loss at Kansas City playing the Giants.
• 56:29
Speaker 5: We end up kicking a sixty one yard walk off
• 56:31
Speaker 5: field goal to beat the Giants and struggle our way
• 56:34
Speaker 5: to two and one at the time.
• 56:35
Speaker 1: Jake Elliott Jake Elliott.
• 56:36
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 56:37
Speaker 5: So so within from there is when we kind of
• 56:40
Speaker 5: get hot and we kind of start beating up on teams,
• 56:42
Speaker 5: and that's when you start getting into you know, you
• 56:44
Speaker 5: look back at it, and we were beating teams pretty good,
• 56:46
Speaker 5: pretty handily, which doesn't happen much in the NFL. So
• 56:49
Speaker 5: you started thinking, yeah, you know, we might be pretty
• 56:51
Speaker 5: good here, and we've got our showdown with the Rams.
• 56:54
Speaker 5: The Rams are you know, coming out like Gangbusters early on,
• 56:57
Speaker 5: and I think that was Sean's first year and my
• 57:00
Speaker 5: brother's on staff there, and we go out there and
• 57:02
Speaker 5: play those guys in just a battle, lose Carson in
• 57:05
Speaker 5: the game, Nick gets us through, get the win, clinch
• 57:07
Speaker 5: the division. But then you're like, all right, things are
• 57:10
Speaker 5: going well, well we just lost the MVP candle, Now
• 57:13
Speaker 5: where is it going to go? So it was, you know,
• 57:15
Speaker 5: there was kind of the ebbs and flows throughout the seat.
• 57:16
Speaker 5: I think We're the first ever one seed to be
• 57:18
Speaker 5: an underdog in the second round.
• 57:20
Speaker 2: Of playoffs against Falcons.
• 57:23
Speaker 5: So I don't know. There were times where he felt
• 57:25
Speaker 5: like we might be really good. Then you lose your quarterback,
• 57:27
Speaker 5: then you lose Jason Peters, then you lose Darren. I
• 57:29
Speaker 5: mean it was just kind of there was enough ebbs
• 57:31
Speaker 5: and flows that kind of kept us on our toes
• 57:33
Speaker 5: and which probably ultimately got us over the hump. There
• 57:36
Speaker 5: was never letting your foot off the gas.
• 57:38
Speaker 1: Carson Wentz, I mean, such an interesting figure right now.
• 57:40
Speaker 1: I don't think he's even on a team at the moment.
• 57:42
Speaker 1: I've been been checking my phone of the day. But
• 57:44
Speaker 1: you coached him in multiple places. The good of Carson Wentz.
• 57:47
Speaker 1: If you were to make the case to a coach
• 57:48
Speaker 1: who's like, should I bring this guy on? What is
• 57:50
Speaker 1: the good of Carson Wentz? As far as if you're
• 57:52
Speaker 1: doing a pros and cons and will make the case
• 57:54
Speaker 1: for why he's still a viable player in this league.
• 57:57
Speaker 5: Well, I mean he's a great athlete, honestly. Now, he
• 58:00
Speaker 5: went through a lot of entry and tearing his acl,
• 58:02
Speaker 5: had a broken bones, back whatever you know. The next
• 58:05
Speaker 5: season has had his share of injuries that I think
• 58:08
Speaker 5: a little in a little bit hampered his athleticism. But
• 58:13
Speaker 5: you know he's a great athlete. He's incredibly cerebral. He
• 58:16
Speaker 5: spends a lot of time, is able to process a
• 58:18
Speaker 5: lot of information, has a very aggressive mindset, and the
• 58:20
Speaker 5: way he plays wants to push the ball down the
• 58:22
Speaker 5: field and then he'll lay it on the line for
• 58:24
Speaker 5: his team. I think you know he brings a physical
• 58:27
Speaker 5: aspect now I think at times that hinders him, you know,
• 58:30
Speaker 5: willing to let go of play. But you know, as
• 58:33
Speaker 5: far as a teammate and a guy you're coaching, and
• 58:35
Speaker 5: a guy that will put it out their first team
• 58:36
Speaker 5: all the time, you know that's what you're asking for.
• 58:39
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, our last in the rapid fire. And
• 58:41
Speaker 1: it's more of a philosophical question and a message to
• 58:44
Speaker 1: young coaches out there. You said it. You were living
• 58:46
Speaker 1: in a basement of your mom's sorority sister and you
• 58:49
Speaker 1: are driving yourself to Tulsa and saying, hey, I could
• 58:52
Speaker 1: do anything. Would be your message to a young man
• 58:55
Speaker 1: or woman leaving college and you know, no job opportunity
• 58:59
Speaker 1: in the NFL sitting there waiting for them, but they
• 59:01
Speaker 1: say I want to coach football, What would be your
• 59:03
Speaker 1: message to that person.
• 59:04
Speaker 5: Find a way to get your foot in the door.
• 59:06
Speaker 5: At your foot in the door, and then make yourself
• 59:08
Speaker 5: as valuable as possible to where when people leave your staff,
• 59:13
Speaker 5: you know they have to take you because of the
• 59:15
Speaker 5: things you provided, the things you were able to do,
• 59:17
Speaker 5: and the staff you're on has to keep you because
• 59:19
Speaker 5: they don't want to lose the things you're able to do.
• 59:22
Speaker 5: Whatever it may be. You know, I took a lot
• 59:25
Speaker 5: of pride and take an initiative, and I did the
• 59:27
Speaker 5: job requirement that I was asked to do. And then
• 59:29
Speaker 5: I wanted to do. Now, what can I do? How
• 59:31
Speaker 5: can I make the offensive coordinator's life easier, the quarterback
• 59:34
Speaker 5: coach's life easier, the quarterbacks life easier. What can I
• 59:36
Speaker 5: do to provide value? And you know, you can't take
• 59:40
Speaker 5: it hard when you throw an idea out there, or
• 59:42
Speaker 5: you do something and you don't see the fruits of
• 59:45
Speaker 5: it at the time. You know, yeah, that's a good idea,
• 59:47
Speaker 5: but we're not going to do it. You know, Okay, great,
• 59:50
Speaker 5: you know I researching idea, I brought an idea. It
• 59:52
Speaker 5: doesn't fit us right now. That doesn't discourage me from
• 59:56
Speaker 5: continuing to try to find ideas, try to find value,
• 59:59
Speaker 5: try to push ways to progress the team.
• 1:00:01
Speaker 1: Or push that idea in the future. Right to me,
• 1:00:04
Speaker 1: that's important. We do this. We do a TV S
• 1:00:06
Speaker 1: every day and it's like a young producer comes up.
• 1:00:08
Speaker 1: It's like I got this idea and we kind of
• 1:00:10
Speaker 1: like poop poo it and I'm like, no, no, no,
• 1:00:11
Speaker 1: that stick with it.
• 1:00:12
  Speaker 3: I like that.
• 1:00:13
Speaker 1: I like that you're thinking of things. That's good.
• 1:00:15
Speaker 5: Yeah, you're just trying to grow. I mean that's the
• 1:00:17
Speaker 5: coolest thing about being in the NFL is it's football
• 1:00:20
Speaker 5: twenty four to seven. I mean we are We are
• 1:00:22
Speaker 5: constantly watching film, tinkering scheme, stealing ideas, molding things that
• 1:00:28
Speaker 5: fit our players, listening to our players. You know, it's
• 1:00:30
Speaker 5: a partnership with players, and I think not putting yourself
• 1:00:33
Speaker 5: on this pedestal to where nobody else can give you
• 1:00:36
Speaker 5: an idea. I mean I will take an idea from
• 1:00:37
Speaker 5: anybody at any time that can get us four yards.
• 1:00:40
Speaker 5: You know, we're willing to do it four yards. Yeah,
• 1:00:42
Speaker 5: that's I mean, we're staying ahead of the change. We
• 1:00:44
Speaker 5: get four so so you know that's you kind of
• 1:00:48
Speaker 5: got to leave your ego at the door and you're
• 1:00:50
Speaker 5: just trying to get better every single day. We tell
• 1:00:51
Speaker 5: our players that too, but that's the ultimate goal. It's
• 1:00:54
Speaker 5: just I want to continue to grow.
• 1:00:55
Speaker 1: Who's a play call then maybe doesn't get the same
• 1:00:57
Speaker 1: credit he might deserve. I mean we always hear about
• 1:00:59
Speaker 1: Shanahan McVay and even you know, your brother gets a
• 1:01:02
Speaker 1: lot of love for some of the stuff you get.
• 1:01:03
Speaker 1: They do it to. Like, who's someone that you say,
• 1:01:05
Speaker 1: you know, you should check out with this guy doing
• 1:01:06
Speaker 1: because what he does is pretty impressive too.
• 1:01:08
Speaker 5: You know, I always kind of liked and this isn't
• 1:01:11
Speaker 5: just because he's on your podcast, but I always liked
• 1:01:13
Speaker 5: kind of what Nate Hackett was doing in Buffalo and
• 1:01:16
Speaker 5: Jacksonville when he was doing it originally there and it
• 1:01:18
Speaker 5: looked a little different than it does now. You know,
• 1:01:20
Speaker 5: obviously you continue to grow in evolve. I like watching
• 1:01:22
Speaker 5: Shane Walderton in Seattle. You know those guys are he
• 1:01:25
Speaker 5: did a great job interesting.
• 1:01:27
Speaker 1: You know, Shane's on that whole tree also never gets mentioned.
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: He's been with those guys Lafloor and all those guys.
• 1:01:32
Speaker 5: Yeah, did a great job, you know, helping put Geno
• 1:01:35
Speaker 5: Smith in great positions while keeping their identity of running
• 1:01:38
Speaker 5: the football and the things they want to do. So honestly,
• 1:01:42
Speaker 5: you know, I'll watch anybody at any time.
• 1:01:44
Speaker 1: I know the goes on.
• 1:01:46
Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's a lot of fun to just see
• 1:01:47
Speaker 5: what's going on the leagues in good hands of just
• 1:01:50
Speaker 5: I think football is in good hands, just these forward
• 1:01:53
Speaker 5: thinking minds, everybody kind of pushing the envelope and compete
• 1:01:55
Speaker 5: and do to make football better.
• 1:01:58
Speaker 1: Our last thing, and you know it's for the Jaguars
• 1:02:01
Speaker 1: fan specifically, as we get excited for this season, your
• 1:02:05
Speaker 1: message to down there in Duval County is what I think.
• 1:02:09
Speaker 5: There's a lot to be excited about. You know. Obviously
• 1:02:11
Speaker 5: we we have we have the right guy pulling the trigger,
• 1:02:13
Speaker 5: and I think that's the biggest thing. You know, we'll
• 1:02:16
Speaker 5: go along way, I think with Trevor Lawrence as our leader,
• 1:02:19
Speaker 5: uh and and coach Peterson obviously the guy at the
• 1:02:22
Speaker 5: front of it all. With those two, I think my
• 1:02:24
Speaker 5: message to the Gyro fans were in good hands. You know,
• 1:02:26
Speaker 5: just just stick with us, keep showing up. The last
• 1:02:29
Speaker 5: two they were essentially playoff games. Titans game in the
• 1:02:32
Speaker 5: Charge game. Awesome environment, right, our crowd was as good
• 1:02:34
Speaker 5: as any crowd I've ever been in, and so when
• 1:02:37
  Speaker 5: Duval comes out, it's a it's a pretty special thing
• 1:02:40
Speaker 5: in our players feed off it and stick with us.
• 1:02:42
Speaker 5: We got the right people leading the charge.
• 1:02:45
Speaker 1: All right, from the basement of the sorority sister's house
• 1:02:48
Speaker 1: to the grunt work under Chip and you know, helping
• 1:02:52
Speaker 1: with the Philly Special to now being the offensive coordinator
• 1:02:54
Speaker 1: one of the hottest teams. And the sex I say sexy.
• 1:02:57
Speaker 1: The word sexy makes sense, but you know the one
• 1:02:58
Speaker 1: that they very hot pick for this summer. Press Taylor,
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: I'm so happy for you to come on the podcast.
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: Hope you had a good time, and we appreciate you
• 1:03:06
Speaker 1: taking the time, especially during your one vacation week when
• 1:03:08
Speaker 1: the training camp gets gone.
• 1:03:09
Speaker 5: I appreciate it. Man, always good.
• 1:03:11
Speaker 1: Talking to awesome stuff. Press Taylor, Jaguars, Oh see on
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: the season. That was great. I'm bringing in our producer,
• 1:03:17
Speaker 1: Aaron wan Kaufman. Aaron, you've been on riding shotguing me
• 1:03:21
Speaker 1: for most of these podcasts. There's something that I like.
• 1:03:24
Speaker 1: I smile when I hear I was living in the
• 1:03:27
Speaker 1: basement of my mom's sorority sister because she lived near
• 1:03:31
Speaker 1: Tulsa that I'm like, I love that stuff. I love
• 1:03:35
Speaker 1: that and of course he you know, he finds his
• 1:03:38
Speaker 1: own way. But pretty cool story at a Press Taylor too.
• 1:03:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and especially with last week's too, we have
• 1:03:45
Speaker 3: working the enterprise, rent a car and yeah, Brad Holmes
• 1:03:48
Speaker 3: living in the one room apartment you know, at the
• 1:03:52
Speaker 3: end of the train line. And now you know, Press
• 1:03:56
Speaker 3: like going driving all night to get somewhere. He doesn't
• 1:04:00
Speaker 3: have an appointment or anything. He's just like, yeah, I'm here.
• 1:04:02
Speaker 3: He told me to come meet him, and here I
• 1:04:03
Speaker 3: am for to talk.
• 1:04:05
Speaker 1: You know. I started with the special with Press because
• 1:04:08
Speaker 1: I love that part of the Philadelphia Eagle season and
• 1:04:11
Speaker 1: I was obviously coasting Good Morning Football at the time,
• 1:04:14
Speaker 1: and there was all sorts of coverage about that play,
• 1:04:15
Speaker 1: and like the hours afterwards, I remember talking to someone
• 1:04:18
Speaker 1: with the Eagles and they're like, I'm like, where the
• 1:04:20
Speaker 1: hell did that play come from? And They're like, twenty
• 1:04:21
Speaker 1: four year old Press Taylor find him. And I'm like
• 1:04:23
Speaker 1: googling who that is and he's in the bottom of
• 1:04:25
Speaker 1: the org chart. But like, isn't that a sweet message
• 1:04:28
Speaker 1: that like any ideas can come from anywhere And in
• 1:04:30
Speaker 1: that case, it was the assistant quarterbacks coach who essentially
• 1:04:33
Speaker 1: was basically you know, low level guy at the time,
• 1:04:37
Speaker 1: but now he's the offensive coordinator of the Jaguars. Yeah.
• 1:04:39
Speaker 3: I also love him talking about every time you assembled
• 1:04:42
Speaker 3: this like new collection of coaches, whether it be offensive
• 1:04:46
Speaker 3: or defensive, they're all bringing in influences from the Chip
• 1:04:49
Speaker 3: Kelly system, the Andy Reid system, the McVeigh system, and
• 1:04:52
Speaker 3: you get like parts of each of them, which is
• 1:04:55
Speaker 3: a really fun thing to think of. And none of
• 1:04:57
Speaker 3: these coaching staffs are like static and yeah, just the
• 1:05:01
Speaker 3: same thing, no matter who's at the head of it.
• 1:05:03
Speaker 3: So that I loved hearing about that too, and all
• 1:05:05
Speaker 3: of the different people he's worked with.
• 1:05:07
Speaker 1: It's really cool. We're wrapping up two weeks in a
• 1:05:10
Speaker 1: row of doing Lions GM last week, Jaguars OC this week.
• 1:05:16
Speaker 1: Two teams that have not been on the radar relatively.
• 1:05:19
Speaker 1: We were a little blip for the Jaguars few years ago.
• 1:05:21
Speaker 1: But I might pick that as my Super Bowl this year,
• 1:05:24
Speaker 1: Like this is why the NFL is the best. Were
• 1:05:28
Speaker 1: in July and I'm talking Jaguars and Lions as a
• 1:05:32
Speaker 1: Super Bowl pick as a possibility. But you hear from
• 1:05:35
Speaker 1: some of the decision makers. You hear from some of
• 1:05:36
Speaker 1: the coaches, and it's hard not to kind of take
• 1:05:39
Speaker 1: a bite out of that apple and be like, I
• 1:05:40
Speaker 1: like where these teams are had at. Young Ascending had
• 1:05:43
Speaker 1: a taste of success at the end of last year
• 1:05:45
Speaker 1: the Lions and the regular season the Jaguars obviously won
• 1:05:47
Speaker 1: a playoff game. It's almost here, dude, it is almost here.
• 1:05:52
Speaker 3: It would be it would be wild for the Kansas
• 1:05:56
Speaker 3: City Kansas City's next rival to be the other brother,
• 1:06:00
Speaker 3: the other Taylor brother.
• 1:06:01
Speaker 1: They went from Zach Taylor to all right, this is
• 1:06:05
Speaker 1: the season with Peter Schreger. We love you guys listening.
• 1:06:08
Speaker 1: We're gearing up. Training camp starts soon on behalf of
• 1:06:12
Speaker 1: Aaron Wan Kauffman are awesome producer, and Jason English and
• 1:06:16
Speaker 1: Grace Fuse and Kurt the great editor, and of course
• 1:06:20
Speaker 1: we've got our folks back in LA and we can
• 1:06:23
Speaker 1: go down the list, Jason Kleinman doing an awesome job,
• 1:06:25
Speaker 1: and Meredith Batten and her team at Schneider his squad,
• 1:06:29
Speaker 1: David Jurenka, who runs the whole show as far as
• 1:06:31
Speaker 1: digital goes, and then of course we talk about you guys.
• 1:06:35
Speaker 1: The listeners keeping this thing going. I feel like I
• 1:06:37
  Speaker 1: don't want to say it's a cult it's a cult favorite,
• 1:06:40
Speaker 1: because that means it's a small favorite, and it means
• 1:06:42
Speaker 1: that doesn't have a huge audience. But the truth matter
• 1:06:43
Speaker 1: is the amount of texts I get based on these interviews,
• 1:06:46
Speaker 1: whether it be the Kellen Moore, than Daniel Hackett or
• 1:06:49
Speaker 1: even the Hankers area in a few weeks ago, got
• 1:06:51
Speaker 1: a lot of love, so we'll keep them coming. I
• 1:06:53
Speaker 1: love doing it, and we love that you're listening. Tell
