- 0:00Hi everybody. Welcome back to the show.
- 0:02Today we're going to take a look at the Artemis, 1 launch.
- 0:05So this Lodge is important for Elon Musk.
- 0:08This launches important for SpaceX for numerous reasons,
- 0:12because eventually SpaceX will be sending a Starship to the
- 0:15moon. And when Starship goes to the
- 0:17Moon, it has to start with the Orion capsule.
- 0:21In the Orion capsule is on top of an SLS rocket.
- 0:25The space launch system rocket, which is currently at 39b.
- 0:31It Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
- 0:32It is literally the most powerful rocket that's ever been
- 0:36built mind. You.
- 0:38This is the only one that's actually been built.
- 0:40But once Starship is built and stacked and ready to go,
- 0:45Starship will be the biggest and most powerful rocket ever
- 0:50created in the history of humanity.
- 0:52So, Artemis one is important because spaceship technology has
- 0:57moved so far forward with Starship.
- 1:00So less is a very reliable way to get people and supplies to
- 1:05the moon at Starship will be taking those people from the
- 1:08lunar Gateway, which is an orbiting space station around
- 1:12the moon to the Moon surface. But art, let's talk about
- 1:15artists one. I'm getting ahead of myself here
- 1:17because that's an Artemis for I believe either to Artemis three,
- 1:21I think it's Artemis three, where people will go down to the
- 1:23surface of the Moon, but our team is one.
- 1:25Let's talk about that because Artemis one, the SLS rocket
- 1:28right now is at Kennedy Space Center pad 39b, and it's going
- 1:34to launch August 29th. 2022 between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 3
- 1:41a.m. eastern Daylight Time EDT. It's going to be a 42 day. 3
- 1:46hour and 20 minute Mission. It's a long mission for a space
- 1:51mission. That's going to be returning to
- 1:53the Earth. So this racket is going to
- 1:55propel the Orion spacecraft which is on top of the SLS.
- 1:59To the moon and then it's going to come back down to earth and
- 2:03splash down in the Pacific. Ocean off the coast of San
- 2:08Diego. It's going to do a distant
- 2:09retrograde orbit around the Moon, approximately 1.3 million
- 2:14miles in this whole trip. Has two point, 1 million
- 2:17kilometers and is returned, speed is ridiculous. 25,000
- 2:22miles per hour or forty thousand kilometers per hour, and it's
- 2:25going to come back October 10th. So it leaves August 29th.
- 2:30Comes back October 10th, that's 42 days, 3 hours and 20 minutes
- 2:34for this flight of the Orion spacecraft.
- 2:36Now let's let's fast forward a little bit when they do the
- 2:40human missions. They have to propel the Orion
- 2:43spacecraft to the lunar orbiter which I was talking about a
- 2:46little bit before and when they Propel that to the lunar orbiter
- 2:50it'll dock with the Orbiter the astronauts on board.
- 2:53We'll get out of the Orion spacecraft.
- 2:55Go into the Orbiter and then doc was Starship and it Starship.
- 3:00Will land the astronauts on the surface of the Moon.
- 3:05That's super cool. And that's going to be coming up
- 3:08about probably seven years from now.
- 3:10So this is looking very far forward but this launch is
- 3:13happening soon so I thought you would be interested in it.
- 3:15Now during this flight, Orion will launch a top.
- 3:18The most powerful rocket in the world and fly farther than any
- 3:22spacecraft. Built for few mins have ever
- 3:24flown it over the course of the mission.
- 3:27It'll travel 280 thousand. Owls as 450 thousand kilometers
- 3:32from Earth and 40,000 miles Beyond The Far Side of the Moon.
- 3:36In Orion, will stay in space longer than any human rated
- 3:39spacecraft, has without docking to a space station and return
- 3:44home faster and hotter than ever before.
- 3:47So there's going to be a lot of Firsts here in a lot of Records
- 3:50will be sent with the Orion spacecraft and also with the SLS
- 3:54because this will be the most powerful rocket that will ever
- 3:58launch up until Our ship. So this first item is mentioned,
- 4:03will demonstrate the performance of both the Ryan and the SLS
- 4:06rocket. It will test the capabilities to
- 4:09orbit the Moon and return back to Earth.
- 4:11And the flight will pave the way for future missions to the lunar
- 4:14vicinity, including Landing the first woman and the first person
- 4:17of color on the surface of the Moon.
- 4:20And with Artemis, one, NASA sets, the stage for human
- 4:23exploration, even deeper, not only to the Moon, Not only to
- 4:26the learner lunar surface but in lunar orbit in the vicinity The
- 4:30of the moon but also destinations for the from Earth
- 4:34including Mars. So we all think that elon's
- 4:37going to send the first star ship to Mars, but possibly
- 4:40Artemis missions. May send the first people to
- 4:43Mars. It depends is this.
- 4:45Erase kinda kinda will SpaceX and NASA work together to make
- 4:52this happen. Unfortunately, to go to Mars,
- 4:57NASA doesn't need a Starship now Can use the Orion capsule on top
- 5:05of the SLS, rocket, and shoot people towards Mars.
- 5:09They can go and do an orbit around, Mars, and come back down
- 5:12to earth with just the rocket in just the Orion capsule.
- 5:15So they don't need a Starship, but if anything happens and the
- 5:21US government pulls funding for the SLS rocket, they think it's
- 5:25too expensive or something, then NASA could contract SpaceX.
- 5:29Us to do the mission and said and if NASA these that SpaceX
- 5:34has shown that they can actually do this for 1/50 of the cost
- 5:41Congress will probably say let's ditch the SLS SpaceX is got this
- 5:46let's save the taxpayers some money.
- 5:47But the SLS rocket is also a jobs program.
- 5:51Tens of thousands of people who worked on this Decades of work
- 5:55so it's pumping money into the economy by just having this
- 5:59Could being built and they're going to build, numerous
- 6:01Rockets, are going to have a lot of different rockets and
- 6:04different sort of propulsion techniques, and bigger block
- 6:09sizes than the first one. So it's going to be a continuing
- 6:14ongoing rocket building. Fiesta, if you will, it's an
- 6:19extravaganza of rockets, these SLS Rockets are but this one the
- 6:23Artemis one Will Blast Off from launch pad 39b and NASA's
- 6:27modernized Spaceport. It Kennedy The Space Center,
- 6:31it'll be propelled by five or a pair of five segments boosters.

- 9:50get back to that Solid Rock. A burst boosters, the will burn
- 9:54through their propellant and separate after about two minutes
- 9:57in the core stage in the RS. 25. The pleat propellant and
- 10:01approximately about eight minutes.
- 10:04So after jettisoning the boosters service module panels
- 10:07and launch abort system. The core stage engines will shut
- 10:10down in the core stage will separate.
- 10:13From the spacecraft leaving the Orion attached to the interim
- 10:16cryogenic propulsion saves, the icps and that will Propel it
- 10:21towards the moon. And that's what this mission is
- 10:23all about. Going around the moon and coming
- 10:26back down to earth. And as the spacecraft makes an
- 10:29orbit of Earth. And deploys its solar arrays.
- 10:31The icps will give a Ryan, the big push that a needs to leave
- 10:35our sorbets and travel towards the moon, and this maneuver
- 10:38known as a translunar. Injection precisely targets a
- 10:42point about the Moon that will guide Orion close enough to be
- 10:46captured by the moon's gravity. And that's how you have to orbit
- 10:49the Moon and Orion will separate from the icps about two hours.
- 10:54After launch in the icps will then deploy.
- 10:57This is another cool part of this Mission.
- 10:59It's going to Floyd 10, small satellites known as cubesats
- 11:02along the way, and there's 10 different experiments that go on
- 11:05here, and the outbound trip. To the moon will take several
- 11:09days during which time Engineers will evaluate.
- 11:12The spacecraft system, Orion will fly about 60 miles above
- 11:16the surface of the moon at its closest approach.
- 11:18Then use the moon's, gravitational force to propel it
- 11:21into a distant retrograde orbit in.
- 11:23That'll be about 40,000 miles past the Moon.
- 11:27Distance is 30,000 miles further than the previous record set
- 11:33during Apollo 13 in the farthest.
- 11:35In spaced any spacecraft built for humans has flown.
- 11:40So for its return trip, Orion will get another gravity assist
- 11:44from the Moon as it does a second close flyby that will
- 11:47fire its engines at precisely the right time to harness the
- 11:50moon's gravity. And accelerate, back towards
- 11:52Earth setting itself on a trajectory to re-enter, the
- 11:56planet's atmosphere is coming back down to Earth At this
- 11:59point. The mission will end with a test
- 12:02of Orion's capability to return safely to Earth in a Ryan will
- 12:06enter Earth's atmosphere traveling at about 25,000 miles
- 12:10per hour. That's 40,000 kilometers per
- 12:12hour. Our Earth's atmosphere will slow
- 12:14down the spacecraft to a speed of about 300 miles per hour.
- 12:18So think about this, you're going 25,000 miles per hour, you
- 12:23have to go through the atmosphere and it's going to be
- 12:27about 5,000 degrees on the heat shield of the Orion spacecraft
- 12:33and while you're traveling 25,000 miles per hour, you slow
- 12:36down to 300 miles per hour. So they're testing the heat
- 12:40shields performance as this happens.
- 12:42And what's the spacecraft has passed extremely heating phase
- 12:46of flight. The forward Bay cover that
- 12:48protects his parachutes will be jettisoned in Orion's to drogue
- 12:52chutes deploy first at about 25,000 feet, that's seventy six
- 12:56hundred meters. And within a minute, they slow
- 12:58around a Ryan down to about 100 miles per hour before being
- 13:02released their followed by three pilot chutes that pull out the
- 13:06three main chutes which will slow or rise to sent to less
- 13:09than 20 miles per hour. So you go from 25,000 miles per
- 13:14hour to 300 miles per hour to 100 miles per hour to 20 miles
- 13:20per hour. It's a rapid slowdown of this
- 13:27and then they're going to have to recover it.
- 13:29So they're going to be doing a Precision Landing within
- 13:32eyesight of the recovery ship off the coast of San Diego,
- 13:37California and the recovery team led by NASA's exploration ground
- 13:41systems program at City will be responsible for safely
- 13:44recovering. The capsule after Splashdown.
- 13:47The interagency landing and Recovery.
- 13:49Team consists of personal Personnel.
- 13:53Sorry, and assets from the US Department of Defense, including
- 13:57nebe amphibious Specialists and Air Force, whether Specialists
- 14:01and engineers and technicians from Kennedy, Johnson, Space
- 14:04Center in Houston and Lockheed Martin space operations.
- 14:09A whole gamut of people will be there.
- 14:11This is a huge mission for NASA. Huge Mission, not only for NASA,
- 14:15but also for human spaceflight in general.
- 14:18So before the Splashdown though, the team will head out to sea in
- 14:21a Navy ship and at the direction of the neighs, Navy recovery,
- 14:25director, Navy divers and other team members.
- 14:28And several inflatable boats will be cleared to approach
- 14:31Orion. And divers will then attach a
- 14:33cable to the spacecraft and Pull It by winch, into a specifically
- 14:37designed cradle inside the ship's.
- 14:39Well deck, and this vessel will transport the Spacecraft and
- 14:43other Hardware to appear at US Naval Base San Diego to
- 14:47transport it, to Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
- 14:52So the major mission that's happening is the Artemis One
- 14:56mission in. It's a precursor to Future
- 15:00Starship missions. That will be landing people on
- 15:03the surface of the Moon. Thank you very much for tuning
