  Today we're going to take a look at the Artemis, 1 launch.

  This launches important for SpaceX for numerous reasons,

  because eventually SpaceX will be sending a Starship to the

  moon. And when Starship goes to the

  Moon, it has to start with the Orion capsule.

  In the Orion capsule is on top of an SLS rocket.

  The space launch system rocket, which is currently at 39b.

  It Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

  It is literally the most powerful rocket that's ever been

  built mind. You.

  This is the only one that's actually been built.

  But once Starship is built and stacked and ready to go,

  Starship will be the biggest and most powerful rocket ever

  created in the history of humanity.

  So, Artemis one is important because spaceship technology has
• 0:57
  moved so far forward with Starship.

  So less is a very reliable way to get people and supplies to
• 1:05
  the moon at Starship will be taking those people from the
• 1:08
  lunar Gateway, which is an orbiting space station around
• 1:12
  the moon to the Moon surface. But art, let's talk about
• 1:15
  artists one. I'm getting ahead of myself here
• 1:17
  because that's an Artemis for I believe either to Artemis three,
• 1:21
  I think it's Artemis three, where people will go down to the
• 1:23
  surface of the Moon, but our team is one.

  Let's talk about that because Artemis one, the SLS rocket
• 1:28
  right now is at Kennedy Space Center pad 39b, and it's going
• 1:34
  to launch August 29th. 2022 between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 3
• 1:41
  a.m. eastern Daylight Time EDT. It's going to be a 42 day. 3
• 1:46
  hour and 20 minute Mission. It's a long mission for a space
• 1:51
  mission. That's going to be returning to
• 1:53
  the Earth. So this racket is going to
• 1:55
  propel the Orion spacecraft which is on top of the SLS.
• 1:59
  To the moon and then it's going to come back down to earth and
• 2:03
  splash down in the Pacific. Ocean off the coast of San
• 2:08
  Diego. It's going to do a distant
• 2:09
  retrograde orbit around the Moon, approximately 1.3 million
• 2:14
  miles in this whole trip. Has two point, 1 million
• 2:17
  kilometers and is returned, speed is ridiculous. 25,000
• 2:22
  miles per hour or forty thousand kilometers per hour, and it's
• 2:25
  going to come back October 10th. So it leaves August 29th.

  Comes back October 10th, that's 42 days, 3 hours and 20 minutes
• 2:34
  for this flight of the Orion spacecraft.

  Now let's let's fast forward a little bit when they do the
• 2:40
  human missions. They have to propel the Orion
• 2:43
  spacecraft to the lunar orbiter which I was talking about a
• 2:46
  little bit before and when they Propel that to the lunar orbiter
• 2:50
  it'll dock with the Orbiter the astronauts on board.
• 2:53
  We'll get out of the Orion spacecraft.
• 2:55
  Go into the Orbiter and then doc was Starship and it Starship.

  Will land the astronauts on the surface of the Moon.

  That's super cool. And that's going to be coming up

  Now during this flight, Orion will launch a top.

  The most powerful rocket in the world and fly farther than any

  And with Artemis, one, NASA sets, the stage for human

  exploration, even deeper, not only to the Moon, Not only to

  including Mars. So we all think that elon's

  going to send the first star ship to Mars, but possibly

  to earth with just the rocket in just the Orion capsule.

  So they don't need a Starship, but if anything happens and the

  US government pulls funding for the SLS rocket, they think it's

  too expensive or something, then NASA could contract SpaceX.

  Us to do the mission and said and if NASA these that SpaceX

  has shown that they can actually do this for 1/50 of the cost

  Congress will probably say let's ditch the SLS SpaceX is got this

  let's save the taxpayers some money.

  But the SLS rocket is also a jobs program.

  back down to earth. And as the spacecraft makes an

  orbit of Earth. And deploys its solar arrays.

  The icps will give a Ryan, the big push that a needs to leave
• 10:35
  our sorbets and travel towards the moon, and this maneuver
• 10:38
  known as a translunar. Injection precisely targets a
• 10:42
  point about the Moon that will guide Orion close enough to be
• 10:46
  captured by the moon's gravity. And that's how you have to orbit
• 10:49
  the Moon and Orion will separate from the icps about two hours.

  After launch in the icps will then deploy.
• 10:57
  This is another cool part of this Mission.

  It's going to Floyd 10, small satellites known as cubesats

  along the way, and there's 10 different experiments that go on
• 11:05
  here, and the outbound trip. To the moon will take several
• 11:09
  days during which time Engineers will evaluate.

  The spacecraft system, Orion will fly about 60 miles above
• 11:16
  the surface of the moon at its closest approach.
• 11:18
  Then use the moon's, gravitational force to propel it
• 11:21
  into a distant retrograde orbit in.
• 11:23
  That'll be about 40,000 miles past the Moon.
• 11:27
  Distance is 30,000 miles further than the previous record set
• 11:33
  during Apollo 13 in the farthest.
• 11:35
  In spaced any spacecraft built for humans has flown.
• 11:40
  So for its return trip, Orion will get another gravity assist
• 11:44
  from the Moon as it does a second close flyby that will
• 11:47
  fire its engines at precisely the right time to harness the
• 11:50
  moon's gravity. And accelerate, back towards
• 11:52
  Earth setting itself on a trajectory to re-enter, the
• 11:56
  planet's atmosphere is coming back down to Earth At this
• 11:59
  point. The mission will end with a test
• 12:02
  of Orion's capability to return safely to Earth in a Ryan will
• 12:06
  enter Earth's atmosphere traveling at about 25,000 miles
• 12:10
  per hour. That's 40,000 kilometers per
• 12:12
  hour. Our Earth's atmosphere will slow
• 12:14
  down the spacecraft to a speed of about 300 miles per hour.
• 12:18
  So think about this, you're going 25,000 miles per hour, you
• 12:23
  have to go through the atmosphere and it's going to be
• 12:27
  about 5,000 degrees on the heat shield of the Orion spacecraft
• 12:33
  and while you're traveling 25,000 miles per hour, you slow
• 12:36
  down to 300 miles per hour. So they're testing the heat
• 12:40
  shields performance as this happens.
• 12:42
  And what's the spacecraft has passed extremely heating phase
• 12:46
  of flight. The forward Bay cover that
• 12:48
  protects his parachutes will be jettisoned in Orion's to drogue

  chutes deploy first at about 25,000 feet, that's seventy six

  eyesight of the recovery ship off the coast of San Diego,

  California and the recovery team led by NASA's exploration ground

  systems program at City will be responsible for safely

  recovering. The capsule after Splashdown.

  The interagency landing and Recovery.

  Team consists of personal Personnel.

  but also for human spaceflight in general.

  So before the Splashdown though, the team will head out to sea in

  a Navy ship and at the direction of the neighs, Navy recovery,
• 14:25
  director, Navy divers and other team members.
• 14:28
  And several inflatable boats will be cleared to approach
• 14:31
  Orion. And divers will then attach a
• 14:33
  cable to the spacecraft and Pull It by winch, into a specifically
• 14:37
  designed cradle inside the ship's.
• 14:39
  Well deck, and this vessel will transport the Spacecraft and
• 14:43
  other Hardware to appear at US Naval Base San Diego to
• 14:47
  transport it, to Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

  So the major mission that's happening is the Artemis One
• 14:56
  mission in. It's a precursor to Future
• 15:00
  Starship missions. That will be landing people on
