- Gary: Are you building a meaningful life or just something impressive enough to make people admire you? Good morning and welcome back to the Northman Coaching's Seven Deadly Sins. I'm your host, Gary Hults. Today we are talking about pride through the Tower of Babel in Genesis chapter 11. The people came together to build a city and a tower reaching toward the heavens. They want to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered across the earth. They have a shared vision, they have a skill, they have determination, but their purpose deserves a closer look. What happens when making a name for yourself becomes more important than listening to God. In the story, God confuses their language. Their construction stops and they are scattered. That challenges us to examine our own building projects. Your business, your reputation, your social media following, even the image of a perfect family. What are you hoping those things will prove? That you matter, that you finally made it? That everyone who doubted you was wrong? There is nothing wrong with wanting to accomplish something. But pride can turn accomplishment into a demand. People need to see me as important. Then correction feels like disrespect. Asking for help feels embarrassing. And admitting that you took the wrong direction becomes harder than continuing down it. Here's where free thinking gets uncomfortable. Have you questioned your definition of success or simply inherited? It from people whose approval you are fucking chasing. A crowd agreeing with your goal doesn't automatically make that goal wise. And a plan working doesn't automatically mean it's aligned with your values. Ask yourself: if nobody could see this achievement, would I still want it? Your answer may reveal what is driving you. So today, examine one goal that you are pursuing. Write down why it matters. Then ask whether the way you're pushing or pursuing reflects your faith, your responsibilities, and the man you say that you want to be. If it doesn't, adjust the plan. Humility gives you room to learn. You can admit you are wrong, receive guidance, and build something better. You don't need to abandon ambition. Just give it a purpose deeper than applause. Remember, the way you look on the outside. Is a direct reflection of what is happening on the inside.
