- 0:00Hey friends, welcome back to In the Stillness.
- 0:03Thanks for joining me on today's episode.
- 0:06We are going to be reading through first John chapter 5,
- 0:10verses 16 to 17 today, and I really want to hone in and talk
- 0:15about the power of persistent prayer and intercession,
- 0:20especially when it comes to people caught in sin or even
- 0:24drifting from God. I believe that prayer is so much
- 0:28more powerful than a lot of people realize.
- 0:31So these two verses carry both a warning but also an
- 0:36encouragement for all of us. Let's go ahead and read through
- 0:40verses 16 to 17. If anyone observes A fellow
- 0:45believer habitually sinning in a way that doesn't lead to death,
- 0:50you should keep interceding in prayer that God will give that
- 0:53person life. Now, there is a sin that leads
- 0:58to death, and I'm not encouraging you to pray for
- 1:01those who commit it all. Unrighteousness is sin, but
- 1:05there is sin that does not result in death.
- 1:09OK. I think some of the biggest
- 1:13battles in people's lives are not won through arguments or
- 1:18through pressure, but through the power of intercession.
- 1:22Prayer is warfare. It is not passive, and I think a
- 1:27lot of believers underestimate what is actually happening when
- 1:31we pray for someone before God. Prayer at times can feel hidden.
- 1:37It might feel more quiet or even more weak.
- 1:42But Scripture shows us the opposite.
- 1:45Prayer softens hearts. Prayer invites the power of God
- 1:50into situations that in our human capacity we could never
- 1:55change or manipulate on our own. What stands out to me
- 2:00immediately in these verses is that John says when you observe
- 2:04someone trapped in sin, when it's somebody habitually sinning
- 2:09in a way that we are to go to prayer immediately.
- 2:14So not gossip, not self righteously condemning them in
- 2:19our thoughts or in our hearts, but to pray.
- 2:23And these verses come directly after John was talking about
- 2:27confidence in prayer as we discussed yesterday, that God
- 2:32hears us when we ask according to his will.
- 2:36So this instruction to intercede, it flows from that
- 2:40same confidence that prayer does work.
- 2:45And I think it can be easier at times for us to try to change
- 2:50people, whether that be through control, pressure, arguments.
- 2:57But the point of the matter is only God can transform a heart.
- 3:03Yes, we are called to lovingly speak truth into people's lives.
- 3:07We are called to confront sin with humility and with wisdom,
- 3:12but only the Holy Spirit can truly convict and bring
- 3:17repentance to someone. That's why prayer matters so
- 3:21deeply. Prayer reaches places that human
- 3:24effort never can. And what's so beautiful about
- 3:28it, too, is that it reflects the heart of Jesus himself.
- 3:33Because even right now, Christ is seated at the right hand of
- 3:37the Father, and He is our intercessor.
- 3:40He is praying for us. I think that's also why Jesus
- 3:44emphasized persistent prayer in his ministry So much.
- 3:49We see in Luke chapter 18, Jesus tells this story of a persistent
- 3:55widow who kept coming before a judge again and again, asking
- 4:00the same thing. And Jesus says, how much more
- 4:04will our heavenly Father respond to those who cry out to him day
- 4:09and night. Prayer is dependence.
- 4:14Prayer is persistence. It is faith.
- 4:17Before you actually see evidence, Jesus says in Matthew
- 4:237/7 that we are to ask, seek, and knock.
- 4:28So my encouragement to you guys is keep asking the Father, keep
- 4:33seeking his face, keep knocking because one day you will ask and
- 4:39receive seek and you will find knock and the door will be
- 4:43opened. This also connects deeply to
- 4:48Jesus urging believers to be salt and light.
- 4:51As we see in Matthew chapter 5, light exposes darkness and salt.
- 4:57If you think about it with food, it is seasoning and it brings
- 5:01out flavor, oftentimes spice, so it preserves.
- 5:06And sometimes walking in truth is going to make people feel
- 5:11uncomfortable. But we are not called to blend
- 5:16into the world or to dim our light in order to fit culture
- 5:21standards. There is a difference between
- 5:25loving confrontation and self-righteous judgment.
- 5:31Galatians 6 tells us that we are to restore people gently, but
- 5:36Jesus warns us in Matthew 7 to remove the plank from our own
- 5:41eye first. So before we look at other
- 5:44people's faults or sins, we need to evaluate our own hearts.
- 5:50But here's the thing, We live in a world that calls being silent
- 5:57love and calls conviction hate. But biblical love tells the
- 6:04truth, yet still falls to its knees in prayer.
- 6:09The goal was never pride. It is humility rooted in truth
- 6:16and out of love. Not pretending that sin is
- 6:21harmless or just glazing past it, but remembering that we
- 6:25ourselves desperately need that grace too.
- 6:30I really think John is sending us an urgent warning about the
- 6:35seriousness of ongoing, continuous, unrepentant sin.
- 6:42It's not just struggling in sin or fighting temptation actively,
- 6:48but consistently choosing sin without feeling repentant about
- 6:54it. Y'all.
- 6:56Sin hardens our hearts. It deceives us.
- 7:01Sin destroys intimacy with God, so when we see someone drifting
- 7:07spiritually, our response should not just be frustration or
- 7:12judgment. It should be intercession.
- 7:16A prayer for a softened heart, for conviction and clear
- 7:22conscience. A prayer for freedom that only
- 7:26Jesus can bring. People do not just need a
- 7:30behavior modification, they need real inner transformation in
- 7:36their hearts. Now I do want to talk about how
- 7:41John mentions this sin leading to death, and commentators
- 7:46debate exactly what this is talking about.
- 7:51Some connect it to a physical death as we see in Acts 5,
- 7:55Ananias and Sapphira. They die because they lied to
- 8:00the Holy Spirit or their believers in First Corinthians
- 8:0311 who took communion in an unworthy manner.
- 8:08Others connected to a spiritual death, like blasphemy against
- 8:12the Holy Spirit or completely turning away from Christ after
- 8:16knowing the truth. Many do think that in John's
- 8:21letter here he was referring to people abandoning the faith and
- 8:25then joining the Antichrist because there is so much warning
- 8:29about that in first John. But what I love is that this
- 8:33passage reminds us we are to leave judgment to God.
- 8:38He is the ultimate judge and only He fully sees people's
- 8:42hearts. So Our Calling is to pray and to
- 8:47intercede and to let God be God. I think one of the enemy's
- 8:53greatest lies is convincing believers that prayer does not
- 8:57really do much, that it is weak. But Scripture says the prayer of
- 9:03a righteous person is powerful and effective.
- 9:08So do not underestimate what happens when you consistently
- 9:12bring someone before the Lord, when you approach the throne of
- 9:17God and you cry out day and night.
- 9:20Pray for prodigal sons and daughters.
- 9:23Pray for hearts that have been calloused.
- 9:27Pray for people who are trapped in deception and enslaved to
- 9:32sin. Because while we are called to
- 9:36speak truth and to live as salt and light, only God can truly
- 9:42change a person from the inside out.
- 9:46Prayer is not weak. It is one of the greatest
- 9:49weapons that believers have been given.
- 9:53And the person that you might be tempted to give up on may be
- 9:58someone who is only one prayer away from full surrender to
- 10:02Jesus Christ. So with all of this, I want to
- 10:05go ahead and close this out in prayer.
- 10:10Dear Jesus, thank you that we can come boldly before you in
- 10:17prayer. We can enter your throne room
- 10:21right where we are. Lord, would you teach us to be
- 10:25people who faithfully, obediently intercede for others?
- 10:31Would you increase our faith that you're still changing
- 10:35hearts? I pray that we would walk in
- 10:38both truth and in humility, that we would allow you to search our
- 10:45own hearts, to evaluate and examine any sin in our lives
- 10:51before we look to other people's faults and sin, and help us as
- 10:57we pray for those around us. I pray that we wouldn't just
- 11:00pray empty words, that we would not just go through motions, but
- 11:06that we would genuinely care for those around us.
- 11:10Believers and non believers, give us the words to pray for
- 11:15them. Lord, if anyone in our lives is
- 11:21drifting from you, I pray that you would soften their hearts
- 11:24and draw them back to yourself. Lord, we thank you so much for
- 11:30the power of prayer and just how convenient it is that you made a
- 11:35way Jesus, for us to do this. At any time of the day, anywhere
- 11:40we are, may we never loose perspective on what you have
- 11:45done. Jesus.
- 11:47May we live in the full victory of the cross today.
- 11:50Be with every listener. Protect them physically,
- 11:54mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
- 11:56May we have lives that radiate your light Jesus and draw people
- 12:01to you. I pray this all in your precious
- 12:04name, Jesus. Amen.
- 12:06OK guys, that's today's podcast episode.
- 12:09I hope you'll have a great Wednesday that y'all feel the
- 12:13Lord's presence leading you and guiding you.
- 12:16And I will see y'all on the next episode.
