- 0:17Sam Altman is working on a brain chip venture that may try
- 0:21something no major competitor has attempted before, changing
- 0:26how brain cells work using gene therapy.
- 0:30Merge Labs, which is the startup associated with Altman and Open
- 0:34AI's venture arm, is considering a method that would genetically
- 0:38alter brain cells so they can better interface with implanted
- 0:41technology, People familiar with the plans say.
- 0:44This includes using ultrasound to communicate with those
- 0:48altered cells. Now the goal is to build a brain
- 0:51computer interface that allows seamless interaction between
- 0:54human thought and AI tools like ChatGPT, Altman said publicly.
- 1:00He wants to be able to think something and get a ChatGPT
- 1:03response without needing to speak or type, you know?
- 1:07This idea sits far outside what companies like Neurolink
- 1:10currently focus on. Elon Musk's firm is pushing
- 1:13forward with electrode based implants that read and stimulate
- 1:17brain activity electronically. And Neurolink raised $650
- 1:21million this year and now holds a valuation of $9 billion.
- 1:27Merge Labs wants to go a different direction, though,
- 1:29tapping into sonogenetics, which is a research field that studies
- 1:33how to make cells respond to ultrasound through genetic
- 1:36engineering. Sonogenetics isn't a new field,
- 1:39but using it in a commercial brain chip product would be a
- 1:43major leap forward. Researchers have spent years
- 1:46exploring how cells can be sensitized to sound waves.
- 1:50Merge is evaluating whether gene therapy can make specific
- 1:54neurons react predictably to ultrasound, which could then be
- 1:57used to send and receive brain signals.
- 2:00This method may allow less invasive implants, since
- 2:03ultrasound can pass through tissues more easily than
- 2:07electrical signals. The hardware involved would also
- 2:10break new ground. Sources say that Merge is
- 2:12looking at embedding an ultrasound device into the human
- 2:15skull to work with the modified brain tissue.
- 2:18This setup could allow for real time detection and control of
- 2:21neurological activity without relying on wires or probes
- 2:25inserted deep inside of your brain.
- 2:28And if this technology ends up working, it may enable smoother
- 2:32interaction between the brain and digital systems, with fewer
- 2:35physical risks than traditional electrodes.
- 2:38Now, Open AI has not confirmed the details publicly, though,
- 2:41and Altman said the deal has not been finalized.
- 2:44Still, Altman's presence around the project is very visible.
- 2:48He plans to Co found the company, though he will not take
- 2:52an operational role or personally invest in it.
- 2:55Much of the early funding, expected a total $250 million,
- 2:58will come from Open a Eyes venture.
- 3:00Arm Merge is currently valued at 850 million, according to three
- 3:04people with direct knowledge of the funding talks.
- 3:08Altman is working on the project alongside Alex Blania, who
- 3:13currently leads Worldcoin, which is a separate venture that uses
- 3:17iris scans to verify digital identities.
- 3:21Blania has close ties to Almond through Worldcoin, another
- 3:24project backed by Opening Eye leadership.
- 3:27Altman previously invested in Musk's Neuralink, but the two
- 3:29entrepreneurs are now not quite friends, and they're now
- 3:33competing head to head in the brain interface space.
- 3:36The rivalry escalated after Musk sued Open AI for straying from
- 3:40its original nonprofit mission. Now brain computer interface, or
- 3:44BCI, companies are multiplying, but few are pursuing the path
- 3:48Merge appears to be taking. Nerlink is still the most high
- 3:51profile BCI company and has begun human testing for treating
- 3:55paralysis. Others like Precision
- 3:57Neuroscience and Synchron focus on non invasive or semi invasive
- 4:01implants designed to assist people with neurological
- 4:04disorders. These companies rely on reading
- 4:06electrical signals from the brain, often requiring surgical
- 4:09insertion of electrodes. Emerge stands out by potentially
- 4:14combining genetic engineering with ultrasound, aiming for a
- 4:17system that works through acoustic stimulation of modified
- 4:20brain tissue. That route could avoid problems
- 4:23associated with electrodes like scar tissue or long term signal
- 4:26degradation. However, it could also take
- 4:29years before the safety and reliability of this approach is
- 4:32proven in humans, and the technology will require
- 4:35overcoming major scientific hurdles, particularly around
- 4:39targeted gene delivery and long term tissue response.
- 4:42Ultrasound has gained momentum in neuroscience research as a
- 4:45non evasive way to influence brain activity.
- 4:48Start-ups like Nudge in Others, backed by investors including
- 4:52Fred ESM and Reed Hoffman, are developing helmets that are
- 4:56focused on using ultrasound to stimulate specific brain
- 5:00regions. These devices are aimed at
- 5:03treating psychiatric disorders without implants, and Merge
- 5:06would be among the first to pursue implanted ultrasound
- 5:09combined with cell modification. Now, Open AI has not officially
- 5:15commented on its role in the Merge product.
- 5:18However, the company's venture fund is expected to provide a
- 5:21large share of the capital needed to bring the project to
- 5:24life. And if successful, Merge could
- 5:26redefine how humans interact with AI systems, bypassing
- 5:30screens and keyboards for something closer to direct
- 5:35thought transmission. And it's still an early
- 5:38development, and the gene therapy approach could shift or
- 5:41be scrapped, depending on technical feasibility.

- 5:46the standard brain chip road map by blending genetics, sound, and
