- 0:04Speaker 2: Let the bidis to the floor, tairway. I'm not sure
- 0:06Speaker 2: we got Mike Clues on the drums. We've got CV
- 0:08Speaker 2: Bitton playing bass and we have the rhy McCombs back
- 0:11Speaker 2: in the band.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Beautiful man, thanks for joining us today, CJ.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Thank you for having me man.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Oh, absolute pleasure. So the big news is Drowning Pool
- 0:21Speaker 3: were recently announced to replace Ky in supports for Alien
- 0:24Speaker 3: and fom On natur Australia next February. Mate, so personally,
- 0:27Speaker 3: good on. You's been stepping into short notice, mate, Like
- 0:29Speaker 3: I know, it'd probably probably been a bit of a whirlwind.
- 0:32Speaker 2: We know, for us, it's been all cool. There's no
- 0:34Speaker 2: drama here with the Drowning Pool and no drama fools.
- 0:37Speaker 2: You know, I'm not sure about that situation. But you
- 0:39Speaker 2: know we've been friends with Allen that Farm since day one.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I mean we were friends with twenty plus years and uh,
- 0:44Speaker 2: you know we're just coming out here to Rockott. We
- 0:46Speaker 2: were already working on some shows in Australia anyway, which
- 0:49Speaker 2: we're going to be later in the year. So we
- 0:51Speaker 2: couldn't wait to get there, so just right place, right time.
- 0:53Speaker 2: We appreciate them having us on and you know, no
- 0:56Speaker 2: disrespective CKI fans. You know, sorry, if you play and
- 1:00Speaker 2: I'm going there and the demand's not going to make it,
- 1:01Speaker 2: we probably couldn't do a cover song from them, drying
- 1:04Speaker 2: might get mad or something.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But you know, auto.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Respect to them, Drenafool's bringing we're bringing our own metal
- 1:09Speaker 2: to the show.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Fantasty man. If my research is correct, you haven't been
- 1:13Speaker 3: a three thousand and sixteen. Is that correct?
- 1:16Speaker 1: That's correct? And that's way too long, man, way too long.
- 1:19Speaker 3: What what's what's shinestry drowning pools to say? And that's
- 1:21Speaker 3: for like it is what sang for to do you
- 1:23Speaker 3: guys man.
- 1:25Speaker 2: The last eight years, I mean it's always a roller
- 1:27Speaker 2: coaster right here with us, you know.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I mean COVID happened, slowed the whole world down.
- 1:33Speaker 2: You know, after we came out of that with record calls,
- 1:35Speaker 2: strike a nerve, we just got the business from the
- 1:37Speaker 2: business again, you know, record labels and manager and all
- 1:40Speaker 2: that kind of stuff just really put it like a
- 1:43Speaker 2: halt on everything for a second.
- 1:44Speaker 1: But here we are independent. It saw us four against the.
- 1:47Speaker 2: World, having a great time, having awesome shows, and we
- 1:50Speaker 2: just want to bring our lovely music and our art
- 1:52Speaker 2: and our rock show to Australia again.
- 1:55Speaker 1: With Ryan McCombs.
- 1:57Speaker 3: We'll get to him a little lighter. But you mentioned
- 2:00Speaker 3: should before that you being friends with Allie and I
- 2:01Speaker 3: had found for a wall. So have you played many
- 2:02Speaker 3: shows for them? Oh?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, we played off and on throughout the years.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You know. The first time we actually played with them
- 2:07Speaker 2: was the Big Down tour in two thousand and two.
- 2:09Speaker 2: That was the first time I met those dude and
- 2:11Speaker 2: I saw Mike Costar back there. I've never seen the
- 2:14Speaker 2: drummer smoke so much, you know, weed and play drums.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I couldn't believe that.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I was just blown away by it. Amazing guys, Amazing
- 2:26Speaker 2: talented musicians, fun songs, great guys. Actually just hit up
- 2:30Speaker 2: Terry a few minutes ago because it's want to get
- 2:33Speaker 2: together with him on a few things about the show
- 2:35Speaker 2: coming up.
- 2:36Speaker 1: The shows, I should say, So we're back now.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So like you goys using nine for Bodies nightse cards
- 2:44Speaker 3: are probably mobile nine for Smooth Criminal even they've got
- 2:47Speaker 3: a shit more good songs. But yeah, they got so
- 2:50Speaker 3: many hit doing a bit of a collaboration on side
- 2:52Speaker 3: would be jumpopping to smoet Criminal with them and they'll
- 2:54Speaker 3: do buddies for you.
- 2:56Speaker 1: You know, I didn't think about that yet. That sounds
- 2:58Speaker 1: like fun.
- 2:59Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I love doing those things on tour. You know this
- 3:01Speaker 2: been It just depends on the bands and time and place.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But uh, you know, the last time we did a
- 3:05Speaker 2: running with Non Point, we were doing that. We're jumping
- 3:07Speaker 2: on stage with each other. I was playing you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: bullet with the names. They were playing bodies and I
- 3:11Speaker 2: love the band camaraderie at the live show. So you know,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I'm glad that she said that. Now she said that,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I'm going to try to put something together. What if
- 3:19Speaker 2: we played So I did a version of Thriller with
- 3:22Speaker 2: with Leo Moroccoli. I don't know if you're heard it aside,
- 3:25Speaker 2: but I'm excited about that Thriller version.
- 3:28Speaker 1: We did it a while back.
- 3:29Speaker 2: But you know, I got kids, and and you know
- 3:33Speaker 2: Netflix and TV's on the Disney Channel, and uh that
- 3:36Speaker 2: the movie called Sing.
- 3:37Speaker 1: So they did like a little fifteen minute version of cartoon.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so they're rocking Thriller and I'm over here and
- 3:42Speaker 2: now my kids are singing Thriller and it's like, oh,
- 3:44Speaker 2: you know, I got the German version of Thrillers, so
- 3:46Speaker 2: that would be fun.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Maybe get Leo to come over to and saying.
- 3:50Speaker 3: This, well the other thing too. Look frankn Book to
- 3:52Speaker 3: the touring radio. Years ago they did a cover of
- 3:54Speaker 3: Don't Pull Me Baby and meddled it right.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Up right of Man, I love metal covers of everything.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Due they're actually ill out there to this spit out
- 4:01Speaker 3: tell you because they haven't released it yet, but you
- 4:02Speaker 3: know there's song I spined me right round. Yeah, they're
- 4:06Speaker 3: doing a metal cover that before you guys get here,
- 4:08Speaker 3: so you can all have nice man, all have a
- 4:10Speaker 3: cover sort of thing to do and maybe we'll jump
- 4:12Speaker 3: up and do it with each other.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to all that, man, I do.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I love playing music and just call me up on
- 4:19Speaker 2: the fly man. You know, I used to do a
- 4:20Speaker 2: lot of stuff with ship Rock with the snow Ways,
- 4:23Speaker 2: and it was really fun and amazing for me because
- 4:25Speaker 2: I got to play with other musicians on the fly
- 4:27Speaker 2: just doing cover songs. And normally you do like two
- 4:29Speaker 2: or three songs a night, but it seemed like every
- 4:31Speaker 2: time I did the cruise, somebody didn't show up or
- 4:34Speaker 2: somebody got two hand too sick to play. So on
- 4:36Speaker 2: the fly they're like, hey, just hey, you know, Panther,
- 4:38Speaker 2: why don't you come up and play five minutes alone,
- 4:40Speaker 2: like now, right now on the f I haven't even
- 4:43Speaker 2: gone over all, right, go for it.
- 4:45Speaker 1: So things like that happen, but I love it. So yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I'm down. I'm down the party, okay.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Yeah, So people on the scene drown and pull live
- 4:54Speaker 3: before may like, what can we expect from your live shot? Like,
- 4:56Speaker 3: obviously you guys and absolutely fucking rock bit those unfortun
- 5:00Speaker 3: enough not sure what can we expect?
- 5:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we can expect. So all of us get along
- 5:05Speaker 1: so great.
- 5:05Speaker 2: We're all been friends and family, Mike Clues, Stevie Ben,
- 5:08Speaker 2: we're all very friends since high school. And here we
- 5:10Speaker 2: have Ryan McCombs back in the band, and we're all
- 5:11Speaker 2: on fire by it, and we have a bunch of
- 5:13Speaker 2: new songs.
- 5:13Speaker 1: That we're playing.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Plus we're gonna play all the old songs that you
- 5:15Speaker 2: love I want to hear. And the thing about our
- 5:17Speaker 2: show is you like you can tell all of us
- 5:19Speaker 2: are having fun with it. We're a plug and play band.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I'll plug right into my amp. You know that's not
- 5:24Speaker 2: like tracks. We're not married to anything. And I'm not
- 5:27Speaker 2: dissing it or or you know, I don't know why
- 5:28Speaker 2: have it on the subject lately, but you know, bands
- 5:31Speaker 2: have a set setlist, the lights and shows, everything's programmed,
- 5:33Speaker 2: and and I love that that's how it is. But
- 5:35Speaker 2: for us, man, we just get up and free form it.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You know, you call out a song, we'll play it.
- 5:39Speaker 2: You know the set list is gonna probably be different
- 5:41Speaker 2: every night, and yeah, we just do whatever we want. Man,
- 5:44Speaker 2: we have a fucking rock show, so crazy jump off the.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Stage just say over the years, what you've done a
- 5:51Speaker 3: lot of shows obviously, bit, but there's gotta be some
- 5:54Speaker 3: notise that you're just not feeling it or you're in
- 5:55Speaker 3: a bad mood, something's happened, like how.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Do you never never ever happened like you never had
- 5:59Speaker 2: that's never been in a bad mood and not feeling
- 6:01Speaker 2: it ever in my life, no matter what's going on,
- 6:03Speaker 2: how bad, I've played every single show. I've never missed
- 6:07Speaker 2: a night. I've never not wanted to do it. I've
- 6:09Speaker 2: always I love it. I've never been too hung over
- 6:11Speaker 2: or too sick to play. I mean I've thrown up
- 6:12Speaker 2: all over myself playing I'm not gonna lie more than
- 6:16Speaker 2: once actually, But that's that's the thing, man, that's my life.
- 6:19Speaker 2: It's it's my look. My whole freaking world is music,
- 6:21Speaker 2: and that's what I love so and the biggest thing too, man,
- 6:25Speaker 2: Not only I mean I love playing the show, put
- 6:26Speaker 2: on a show for our fans, but also love being
- 6:28Speaker 2: out a rock show. So I'm out there in the
- 6:30Speaker 2: crowd every night telling that for him, you're going to
- 6:32Speaker 2: see me in the pit because I still go.
- 6:35Speaker 1: That's how I stay in shapes rock and roll work.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Hopefully I'll be in shape by the end of the then.
- 6:43Speaker 1: We'll get there.
- 6:45Speaker 3: That was taking out this before briefly, But a lot
- 6:47Speaker 3: of people only know Drowning Pool for the song Body,
- 6:49Speaker 3: So give us three other songs for yours that they
- 6:51Speaker 3: can listen to before they come along to get out
- 6:53Speaker 3: get a feel for the band.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Bodies for sure. Man, that's a fun song.
- 6:57Speaker 2: It's an awesome song to play. I love I can't
- 7:00Speaker 2: play it to play it every night? You know this
- 7:02Speaker 2: the new song Revolution. I'm not just trying to puss
- 7:04Speaker 2: the new you know material, but you know Revolution to finally,
- 7:07Speaker 2: a man with Ryan McCombs is the first thing, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 2: we came up with and you we just captured that
- 7:11Speaker 2: excitement and energy to be writing songs together again. So
- 7:15Speaker 2: check that one out as well. We're gonna be playing that.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I mean, if you want to hear some I mean,
- 7:19Speaker 2: did we do covers? You want to hear convery some
- 7:20Speaker 2: hell we play cos Cowboy some health you want to
- 7:22Speaker 2: feel like.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I do is another great one.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Thirty seven stitches, if we want to take it down
- 7:27Speaker 2: a little bit, that's another staple song that's got a
- 7:29Speaker 2: lot of deep feel into us. Of course, fair Away
- 7:32Speaker 2: Center a lot of stuff off there. Anything off the
- 7:35Speaker 2: Center record, man, that's always always great tunes.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm not sure you know. There's a few.
- 7:40Speaker 2: There's Keaton Zero I really want to play live, which
- 7:45Speaker 2: we haven't. There's some deep tracks too, and songs that
- 7:47Speaker 2: we did with Ryan on the Full Circle record and
- 7:51Speaker 2: you know, on the self titled records.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So man, I'm just.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Gonna go through a whole catalog. Now I'm gonna mention
- 7:56Speaker 2: every song you got me on a roll.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Put yourself in this ship out. If you don't do
- 8:00Speaker 3: Cowboys from Hell people again, it fucking up you. After
- 8:03Speaker 3: that that's yeah, we should. You know what, We're gonna
- 8:07Speaker 3: bring some metal down on absolutely. Like you know, you
- 8:09Speaker 3: mentioned the song Revolution before, which is a new single
- 8:12Speaker 3: like hasn't been received by the fans.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Dude, it's just like just right out the gate man.
- 8:17Speaker 2: By the end of the song, they're singing along.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You know.
- 8:19Speaker 2: The first time we played it live was before it
- 8:20Speaker 2: even came out. We played in El Paso and someone
- 8:23Speaker 2: filming the video the week before the song came out,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and I mean, dude, it was just awesome to see
- 8:27Speaker 2: the instant connection because we haven't played something new like
- 8:30Speaker 2: that live in years, and especially the first new song
- 8:32Speaker 2: with Ryan McCombs and just to see the crowd like
- 8:36Speaker 2: just like gravitate.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And just just go nuts, just as crazy as they
- 8:39Speaker 1: do for bodies on it. Man. That's been well received
- 8:41Speaker 1: and I love playing it live. Man.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you mentioned Ryan McCombs by like his first new
- 8:47Speaker 3: song with you guys in about thirteen years. So what
- 8:50Speaker 3: was he nervous that he slipped straight back in the
- 8:52Speaker 3: fold or is it like there've been nerves there?
- 8:54Speaker 2: No, dude, he came right in like actually he stays
- 8:56Speaker 2: here in my studio. He actually sleeps right here. When
- 8:59Speaker 2: he's hanging out. So you know, we hadn't seen each
- 9:02Speaker 2: other in a while, and he showed up, picked them
- 9:04Speaker 2: off from the airport and we sat here and then
- 9:06Speaker 2: we went have like a gazebo set of outside and
- 9:09Speaker 2: we just instantly just started writing music to the other.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It's like we've always had a great writing relationship and
- 9:13Speaker 2: friendship all along, man, So it was great to jump
- 9:17Speaker 2: back into that instantly. And the first day, you know,
- 9:19Speaker 2: we went to the rehearsal room. You know, the songs
- 9:22Speaker 2: we haven't played since Ryan was in the band. I'm
- 9:26Speaker 2: start to thinking the ones that we just just Mike
- 9:29Speaker 2: just starts playing freaking songs. He started playing, Oh yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 2: let the send me again. So I'm taking my guitar
- 9:34Speaker 2: at the case. I didn't even tune it yet, and
- 9:35Speaker 2: he's already playing it and Ryan starts singing it. So
- 9:38Speaker 2: me and Stevin dore bass guitar, and we just started
- 9:40Speaker 2: playing the song like it just was there, man. So
- 9:43Speaker 2: it was awesome to have that experience in that moment,
- 9:45Speaker 2: like that real connection you have with other musicians.
- 9:49Speaker 1: It's freaking awesome, man.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And it's actually it's a pretty important song for grounding pool,
- 9:55Speaker 3: like being your first song in thirteen years with Ryan.
- 9:57Speaker 3: So why did you change this particular song to the
- 9:59Speaker 3: two reintroduce it for the world.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Well, we had several songs that are on the play
- 10:04Speaker 2: that we're working on together.
- 10:05Speaker 1: This one just kind of gravitated to Forwards being done first. There.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I think all of us might have had a moment
- 10:11Speaker 2: you know, where you know, you know, like the eyes
- 10:13Speaker 2: are going to be on this. But at the end
- 10:15Speaker 2: of the day, dude, it's us writing music together and
- 10:17Speaker 2: it's not about you know, the machine or like about
- 10:22Speaker 2: you know, the industry, and it's about us writing song
- 10:24Speaker 2: and art together as a band. And when it's ready
- 10:27Speaker 2: to be out, that's when it's ready to go. All
- 10:28Speaker 2: four of us sat down at table with lyrics, we
- 10:32Speaker 2: all in a room together working on it. Musically, it's
- 10:34Speaker 2: as completely drown pool as us for and that's the
- 10:37Speaker 2: one that we finished first that we're going to get
- 10:39Speaker 2: out to the world.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Wait and as she standalone songwriter, is it part of
- 10:43Speaker 3: a bigger picture?
- 10:44Speaker 1: It's part of a very big picture.
- 10:46Speaker 2: We're hoping to get a few more songs recorded before
- 10:48Speaker 2: the end of the year, and a couple more before
- 10:51Speaker 2: we go to our Stray in February.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So yeah, we're working on the full length record. You
- 10:55Speaker 1: know that. The the original plan was to have a
- 10:57Speaker 1: couple of reunion shows at Ryan.
- 11:00Speaker 2: And then because he still sings with soil and all
- 11:03Speaker 2: the love and respect you know, to Tim and Adam
- 11:06Speaker 2: and everybody in that whole camp, and then all of
- 11:09Speaker 2: a sudden we just writing songs together and then we
- 11:11Speaker 2: get the phones calling.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Hey, come play some shows by some shows.
- 11:14Speaker 2: So we've been pretty much just playing shows the last
- 11:16Speaker 2: year and a half, having a great time doing it,
- 11:18Speaker 2: writing music in between from all the inspiration from all
- 11:21Speaker 2: the amazing shows with all the awesome rock fans.
- 11:24Speaker 3: And these revolution an idea, what do you expect from
- 11:27Speaker 3: the whole album or is that your discussion surface.
- 11:30Speaker 2: That one's dude, the Naxson coming up is even more
- 11:32Speaker 2: geming than that. I can't let any cats out the bag.
- 11:35Speaker 2: We have a very super deep song that's coming out.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I have a new tune that just came naturally that
- 11:39Speaker 2: has a tear away kind of vibe to it, that
- 11:41Speaker 2: kind of like you know, chugging, long, droning feel that
- 11:44Speaker 2: just came naturally again. And then we have some like
- 11:48Speaker 2: some songs that got it like lower tuning on it.
- 11:50Speaker 2: That's very like Ryan mccoon's like little Wheerehouse and have
- 11:54Speaker 2: some songs at a jem. You know, I'm always you know,
- 11:56Speaker 2: influenced pot pan Ter or who isn't We have a
- 11:58Speaker 2: lot of stuff on the play man.
- 12:00Speaker 3: So that's actually one thing with drowning for my life.
- 12:04Speaker 3: This is going to make you sound old, so I apologize.
- 12:06Speaker 3: But you must have been around this last century pretty
- 12:09Speaker 3: much like you've gone through. The music industry has gone
- 12:12Speaker 3: through a lot of changes, a lot of phases and
- 12:14Speaker 3: like that, but you guys have always kept your hard
- 12:16Speaker 3: rock metal roots.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Like how hard is.
- 12:18Speaker 3: It these days to stick to your own path instead
- 12:21Speaker 3: of trying to cash in on the on the next
- 12:23Speaker 3: big thing.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I guess yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 2: We don't focus on the next big thing, man, We
- 12:26Speaker 2: really don't. We're independent right now. We're you know, we
- 12:29Speaker 2: just suss forward as no management of the label. We
- 12:31Speaker 2: have a you know, a so we have a you
- 12:34Speaker 2: know level deal with Shan and SBG Records.
- 12:36Speaker 1: It's like a partnership on what we're doing.
- 12:38Speaker 2: But we're controlling our career now. It's been the best
- 12:41Speaker 2: last year and a half, especially when we got Ryan back.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You know, we've we've been through four different labels, have
- 12:45Speaker 2: been through countless managers and everybody.
- 12:47Speaker 1: It's just out to get you.
- 12:49Speaker 2: So we're not caught up, like I said, as a machine,
- 12:51Speaker 2: I'm not trying to sit here and uh you know,
- 12:54Speaker 2: try to like impress somebody or try to be number
- 12:56Speaker 2: one of the charts. It's like, I try to focus
- 12:58Speaker 2: on us and writing green music that people can get
- 13:01Speaker 2: along to and enjoy it.
- 13:02Speaker 1: So that's when you focus on that with the realness
- 13:05Speaker 1: of it. And you're right, I think that's how you
- 13:08Speaker 1: become successful.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Cool. So I know this is your hopefully this is
- 13:11Speaker 3: going to be a long way off, bro. But one
- 13:13Speaker 3: day when grounding Paul decides to Paul stumps and pull
