- 2:23even into the political season yet. Well, he's going to join us to
- 2:27talk about that. Plus, you know, I haven't really had a whole
- 2:30lot of chance to talk about this, but I have wanted to. And
- 2:31that is the proposed needle exchange program in Charleston. It's back again and I'm
- 2:37going to talk about that coming up a little bit later on as well.
- 2:39Push your phone, calls and text are welcome. It's Monday, though,
- 2:43which means we talk to one of our mayors from here in the Canal Valley
- 2:46Mayor Scott Alley for Dunbar. How are you, sir? Doing great?
- 2:49I appreciate you having me on, Thank you for being here. Second appearance
- 2:52on the show. Right, we said we're going to try to make this
- 2:54a little bit more of a of a regular thing with you. But you're
- 2:59a hard guy to get a hold of. You're very busy because you're always
- 3:00doing the people's work. Yes, always out down the streets and taking care
- 3:06of business. That's what you gotta do. So what's going on in Dunbar.
- 3:08You got a lot of things going on. Yeah, tomorrow night we
- 3:12have the National Night Out. It's going to be held at the Police Department
- 3:15parking lot from six to eight and a lot of good things for the kids
- 3:19to interact with the police and fire departments and a lot of boosts set up
- 3:23for everybody to enjoy. And this is a this is a national adventage.
- 3:28You said, the National Night Out. This happens all across America. What
- 3:31do I mean? Not all cities take part in it, but you do.
- 3:35Why is it that you do it in Dunbar. The main reason that
- 3:38we do it in Dunbar is because I retired as a police officer from the
- 3:40city of Dunbar, saw the great program going on throughout the United States and
- 3:46was one of the first guys to get it started. Here in Dunbar.
- 3:50We constantly are having you know, issues at schools and different things, and
- 3:55we wanted to get the kids out and see the police and fire are somebody
- 4:00that you can talk to. And that's so important, I think, and
- 4:03one of the reasons behind the National Night Out on a nationwide basis, Mayor
- 4:08is to get these people in the community to come out and meet these folks
- 4:12and that way, when there are problems which will develop no matter what the
- 4:15town is, that way you have an opportunity. They're not a total stranger.
- 4:18You know that Jim is one of our local police officers or first responders.
- 4:25Yeah, and you know, like I said, whenever I started it,
- 4:28it was just a small group. We probably had a hundred participants.
- 4:32I would say tomorrow night we're probably gonna have between three and five hundred.
- 4:35And where does everything take place down in front of the police department on Dunbar
- 4:40Avenue, thirteen hundred block. All right, and that's good. A lot
- 4:42of lots of other activities going on as part of that as well. Yeah,
- 4:46and here on the sixteenth, seventeenth of September, we're gonna have our
- 4:53Fall Festival. With the Fall Festival, we're gonna have Tommy Griffith and the
- 5:00and Non Friction. On Friday September fifteenth and on the sixteenth we're gonna have
- 5:04the band hair supply. I'm familiar with both of nonfriction. All of them
- 5:09are great, you know. So we have a good time for the two
- 5:12days, indeed, you and we'll have you on probably before then to talk
- 5:15about that. With all the different activities. Again, we're talking to Maryor
- 5:16Scott Elliott of Dunbar here on Mayor money, I want to go back to
- 5:19the National Night Out for a moment. How many years you've been doing it?
- 5:23This will be this I believe it's the seventh year. We started right
- 5:27before I retired in two thousand and probably about two thousand and sixteen. And
- 5:30this isn't the only community in the area that we'll be doing it. I'm
- 5:33sure others will, but right now at your time, so we want to
- 5:35make sure everybody goes to one of the bigger and better ones in the area,
- 5:38and it's the city of Dunbar. I'll always make it bigger and in
- 5:41Dunbar, that's what you do, you know, Mayor. There's been so
- 5:43many big things going on in the valley here recently, from Regatta to the
- 5:46We had the World Table Tennis event last week at the Connell Stemaconvention Center of
- 5:51different events going on in Nitro here as of late. How do all these
- 5:56big events impact when they happen around the valley, How do they impact Dunbar.
- 6:02Unfortunately, they don't help us a lot. I mean they come through
- 6:05and they'll bow all kinds of our food and stuff like that. We only
- 6:09have one hotel road at a minute. We have another hotel getting ready to
- 6:13open hopefully at the end of the month. Once we get that and open
- 6:16the sports complex and different things are going to be taking advantage of that hotel,
- 6:20I believe, and the people coming in will really help the city out
- 6:26with the bingo taxes and everything else. Well, we're hoping that they do.
- 6:29And you I think you talked to Mayor of the last time you were
- 6:31on the show. But the need for another hotel in the Dunbar area,
- 6:34and again with the success of the Shawnee Sports Complex and with all these other
- 6:40things going on, and that propose Capital Sports Complex downtown Charleston. If that
- 6:44gets done, which we think it will, Dunbar is going to be,
- 6:47you know, like these other communities in the area, they're gonna be bustling
- 6:50just as well. Whether the events are held there or not correct. And
- 6:53you know there's only so many hotel rooms between here and Flatwoods Kentucky, Flatwoods
- 6:59West virgin all the way to Beckley that everybody is booking up solid every time
- 7:03there is a soccer comp the soccer competitions and different things like that. So
- 7:11for the last since twenty seventeen, we haven't had one of our hotels and
- 7:15it's a bigger hotel of all of them, and I think by getting that
- 7:18one back open with new owners will be in a great shape. We certainly
- 7:23wish you the best of luck with that's a mayor Monday with the Dunbar Mayor
- 7:27Scott Elliott. You know, Mayor, there's been a lot of people and
- 7:30it's been proven that are going to be moving into the area soon, you
- 7:33know. And I don't want to get into politics necessarily. We'll do that
- 7:36with Stephen a little bit later, but it's a fact there are people moving
- 7:41into the area. In my neighborhood. We're getting ready to add about a
- 7:45development of about three hundred families that are going to be in this new housing
- 7:48development that's happening over in Tays Valley, and all these people that are moving
- 7:54can't live in Tays Valley or they can't all live in downtown Charleston. So
- 7:58as a mayor, what do you say to people that may be looking at
- 8:01Dunbar as a place to live. Three years ago we took over the administration,
- 8:07and you know, there was a lot of houses that were dilapidated.
- 8:13Today I can come here and tell you that there has been forty on the
- 8:16ground. We have eight, possibly eight more coming down by September. We're
- 8:22making room to put new houses in every day that we can. And you
- 8:28know, if you would look at the prices of property back five years ago
- 8:35compared to today, we're getting up there and we're getting reasonable with all the
- 8:39prices. And you know, if it wouldn't have been for trying to clean
- 8:43up the city, we wouldn't we wouldn't be able to draw anybody in.
- 8:46But I think we can draw people in now well, and that's what we
- 8:50hope happens. How's the business climate in Dunbar. It's getting better. We're
- 8:54in the middle of restructuring Ohio Avenue to get that cleaned up. We have
- 9:01several businesses. We got a brand new ice cream shop, the Crafts of
- 9:07Coal that just opened up on Dunbar Avenue, right past the police stations now,
- 9:11and these folks have been at days a pretty successful food truck type thing
- 9:15of a trailer. But they've taken around of different here seeing people. I'm
- 9:16presuming right, yes, and they are packed. It seems like every day.
- 9:22Who doesn't like ice cream? And summertime it is nice. I had
- 9:24my first Crafts of Coal ice cream last Saturday on their grand opening and it
- 9:28was probably the best ice cream I've had. Okay, all right, so
- 9:31I got to ask you, mayor what's your what's your personal favorite? On
- 9:35the ice cream? That was the West Virginia I believe it was called the
- 9:39Pothole. What's Virginia Pothole? Yeah? And what was that? What was?
- 9:43It? Had cookie dough and oreo. You can stop right, there's
- 9:48good. You get me with cookie doughs. I mean I'm not a huge
- 9:50ice cream personal. As soon as you said cookie dough or oreo, you
- 9:52got me. And you got our producer in there, Hollywood, Jef Petty,
- 9:56who's like, you know, slurping all over the microphones and there.
- 9:58So so you got to craf so cole folks there and hopefully we'll get some
- 10:01some more businesses in there as well, because you know, Dunbar is a
- 10:03great place. Like I said, we're doing work on Ohio Avenue and that's
- 10:07our main business district. I'm waiting on the State of West Virginia to decide
- 10:11if they're going to give me the grant to open up Twelfth Street completely,
- 10:15and if they do, I think a businesses will come. Well, we
- 10:18certainly do, hope. All right, let's recap and talk about National Night
- 10:20Out again tomorrow. It give us the time and location and what people can
- 10:24expect when they come out. Well, we're gonna have the National Night Out
- 10:28from six to eight and the thirteen hundred block of Dunbar Avenue. Be careful
- 10:31when you're coming through because kids will be crossing the road. We're having foam
- 10:37machines and water sprinkler systems. We're having a demonstration by the Canines. We're
- 10:43having a demonstration from the Fire Department on extrication. Batman was going to be
- 10:48there, and we're just going to have a good time tomorrow night for a
- 10:50couple of hours. And the weather's going to be fantastic, I hope,
- 10:54because in the last three or four years it seems like every time we get
- 10:56a storm right in the middle. We According to what my friends in meteorology
- 11:01tell me, this is going to be a fantastic week for any sort of
- 11:03an outdoor activity. Mayor, it's always a pleasure to have you on the
- 11:05show. Keep doing great things in Dunbar. I appreciate you. Oh hold
- 11:09on one second, got a question here for You're not done yet, Okay,
- 11:13somebody, so, what is the status of the Alabama Barbecue that's supposed
- 11:16to be opening up in Dunbar. The gentleman that put the Alabama Barbecue in
- 11:20there had some issues and he had to get an exit ramp cut out of
- 11:24the Dunbar Avenue side. They have an entrance, but they had they couldn't
- 11:28take the entrance and exit out the same place, so they moved it.
- 11:31And he has some gravel that was put down before they moved to exit ramp,
- 11:37and as soon as he can get that all smoothed out and fixed up,
- 11:41I understand he's going to be opening. Yeah, because I've actually drove
- 11:43by there the other day and I saw the sign up there and I thought,
- 11:46man, it's been a while since that sign's gone. So hopefully we'll
- 11:48be able to to get him taken care of, and I appreciate the texture
- 11:52for texting a mayor good luck with everything. Tomorrow night. We'll have you
- 11:54on before your fall festival. Thanks a lot sounds good. Thank you,

- 15:20I am doing fantastic man. How are you doing well? You know,
- 15:24I love getting together with you to talk politics. And there's been a
- 15:26lot of news here as of late, particularly in the race for governor.
- 15:31Now last week actually came down officially, I guess on last Monday, but
- 15:35it had been rumored for some time. State Auditor J. V. Mccuski
- 15:39has dropped out of the governor's race to instead turn his attention toward the race
- 15:43for Attorney General. Will he'll find himself facing off Stephen against a couple of
- 15:48state Senators Mike Stewart. Editor's note, Mister Stewart has asked for time to
- 15:52talk to Dave Nation this Wednesday top of the show, and he'll be on
- 15:56the show Wednesday also Senator Ryan Well as part of that too. A lot,
- 16:00Steven has been made of the friendship, or maybe the former friendship between
- 16:04mccusky and Weld. What do you make of all this? Yeah, I
- 16:07think formers the operative word there in a short amount of time. There's already
- 16:11been some hurt there. You're talking about two people, in the case of
- 16:15Ryan Weld, good friends with JB. Mccusky. Well would sometimes even stay
- 16:19with the mccuski's when he came to Charleston, their wives get along, and
- 16:25JB openly welcomed Weld to detrain general race on social media, and so there's
- 16:32a lot of closeness there. So this took them by surprise, even though
- 16:36from what I understand, I think JB did give Weld a heads up before
- 16:40he did it, but they didn't make it any less hurtful for sure.
- 16:44So it was a surprise by that group. And if Weld smart, he
- 16:48kind of takes that anger and kind of channels that into the race and moving
- 16:52forward because obviously he's he's mad, and let's see what happened. And in
- 16:59the interview UM on Hoppy last week, you know you have kind of that
- 17:03he said, she said thing because Yan Ryan Well, I guess he said.
- 17:07He said where Ryan Weld, you know, says that, I guess
- 17:11that that JB sort of kind of told him, you know that if you
- 17:17run for governor, I'll run for attorney general, and you run your race
- 17:19and I'll run mine. As you said, they were great friends. And
- 17:22then mccusky comes out and says, no, I didn't say that, and
- 17:26Weld responds by said, I can tell you exactly where you were when you
- 17:30said that, So who actually knows here? Yeah, I would imagine some
- 17:33conversations were had about that. I was told something similar. I was told
- 17:37basically the weld wouldn't have even gotten into the AG's race if JB had said
- 17:42that was the route he wanted to go. But from what, from what
- 17:45I've been told, JB had said no, no, you're good to go.
- 17:48So that they did it. But the rumor have been out there for
- 17:52some time and JB was looking to get out. Now, he never hinted
- 17:55that much about that sort of thing to me to get out of the governor's
- 17:57race. I should say I never got a hint of that. In fact,
- 18:00I was arranging an interview for Goober, a tourial interview series I'm working
- 18:03on for our papers, and then this all happened what the last week,
- 18:08And really it's when a lot of us started to come out there was to
- 18:11pull out there apparently trying to feel people out how they felt about JB.
- 18:15Mucusky running for Attorney General. And then the announcement came last week. So
- 18:19it's one of those things where yeah, he said, he said, and
- 18:23the only thing you can really do is just move forward. You got another
- 18:27guy in the race and just do the best you can. And Mike Stewart,
- 18:30of course, you know, came out as I said, Michael be
- 18:33on the show Wednesday. But Mike comes out and says basically, Okay,
- 18:37well, you guys are talking about feelings and hurt feelings. I'm busy talking
- 18:41to the people. Is Greg Thomas was on the show last week. He
- 18:44says that mccusky is the is the favorite in this race. What do you
- 18:48think? I think there's a lot of interesting dynamics there because politically, I
- 18:51think Weld and JB are very similar. I would put them I think in
- 18:53my call in today, I describe them both as sort of traditional Republican conservatives.
- 19:00Make Stewart I would put more in the kind of national conservative family that
- 19:04seems to be kind of a growing a little more right than what, in
- 19:08your opinion what mc caskey and world are. Yeah, definitely for sure,
- 19:11and it's a trend that's kind of growing nationally. So they could take votes
- 19:15away from each other. But you know what, JB and Stuart could take
- 19:18votes away from each other too, because they're both been involved with Canal County
- 19:22politics for some time. For the last decade or so, so there's a
- 19:25potential for that as well. And of course the JB, as you know,
- 19:29is coming in with I think more than four hundred thousand dollars in cash
- 19:32on hand, which is way more than World who does have the most money
- 19:34in the race. He outraced Stewart in the last quarter. But I mean,
- 19:38that's a lot of money and he could do a lot with that.
- 19:41Even if he doesn't raise anything else, he can definitely use that to get
- 19:45his name out there. So a lot of different dynamics there. And speaking
- 19:48of money, I'm honestly Stephen not somebody who spends a lot of time pouring
- 19:52over a campaign finance reports. Some of you, guys, it's your paid
- 19:56job. You have to do that, Ethan Braden, people like that.
- 19:59What do you ma, could the early report so far? Oh wow?
- 20:03Yeah, I think before JB got into the governor's race, certainly, I
- 20:06think, well, would having a lot of money really kind of shows you,
- 20:10look, Mike Stewart could be a little bit grading on the other side
- 20:14of things. Obviously, he had a kind of a reputation coming out of
- 20:18this legislative session for pushing hard and kind of getting under fellow Republican senators Feathers.
- 20:23He's got that reputation behind the scenes as well, and of course he
- 20:29was a hard charger as US attorney. So it's one of those things where
- 20:33well it's you know, comes across as a friendlier guy. He's a younger
- 20:37guy, he's very polished, all that sort of stuff. So maybe people
- 20:41kind of saw something in him that they thought would make a good Attorney general
- 20:45candidate. So he got more of the money that time around. But I
- 20:48mean again, now, if a third person that race, JB. Mccusky,
- 20:52that dynamic is going to change and he doesn't have to raise any more
- 20:55money, but he might, but people might see him as someone in someone
- 21:00who was friend a statewide race. The other two really haven't done anything like
- 21:04that, so that does give JB a an advantage they don't have. Indeed,
- 21:08again, we're talking with Steven all Adams of AGDA Newspapers here on five
- 21:11eighty Live five Any Life presented Apart by Travis Willard, your Edward Jones financial
- 21:15advisor just off the Tames Valley accit lord. Now Travis and the team can
- 21:18help you reach your financial goals. Is at Edward Jones dot com or called
- 21:22Travis Willard today three oh four, three ninety seven fifty five fifty three for
- 21:26your Edward Jones financial advisor, Travis Willard, Edward Jones Member SIPC. So
- 21:30we got interims coming up, yes, Uh? State Democratic Party Chair Mike
- 21:34Pushkin on the show last week, UH and deligate Mike Pushkins well got to
- 21:38get both his titles in there, uh, saying that's it's time for I
- 21:42guess while the interims are here to really focus on more of a special session
- 21:48kind of a thing on on foster care. He was on I saw him
- 21:51on Mark Curtis the show over the weekend as well. He was really really
- 21:55drilling down on that on on the foster care system and the prison system.
- 21:59Your thoughts on what we could expect as a get arms roll into town.
- 22:02Sure, I think there will be a special session. Of course, it
- 22:04hasn't been announced yet. Everyone keeps pressuring the governor. Governor doesn't ever announce
- 22:07that stuff until practically a day before. So, but I could tell you
- 22:11talking to some lawmakers, particularly Senate President Craig Blair, behind the scenes,
- 22:15there's movement towards that, particularly to deal with the correctional officer crisis, and
- 22:19they have a comprehensive plan. It's not just going to be pay raises,
- 22:22but it's gonna be changing some of the pay scales and other reforms to try
- 22:27to encourage correction officer to stay recruit more. So you're going to see that
- 22:33happen. But in regards to foster care, I don't know. That's a
- 22:37big thing, and they have done They have done several bills over that book
- 22:42orse that just scratches the surface of what they need to do. I know
- 22:45Hobby had to call them this morning talking about making some fixes to how they
- 22:48do the automobile, motor vehicle, personal property tax rebates. STU. It's
- 22:53confusing, Yeah, it is confusing. Makes you wonder why the State Tax
- 22:57Division didn't come out with any guidance on since this was the governor's thing.
- 23:00But that's another story. But yeah, they'll they'll have to do a fix
- 23:03to that there. I'm sure they'll have some supplemental appropriation. So yeah,
- 23:07I think they'll use this interim time to do a special session. For sure.
- 23:11There's certainly a desire to do it, but of course it always takes
- 23:15coming up with agreement on whatever the bills are before they move forward because they
- 23:18don't want to go past it the interim date and didn't have to spend actual
- 23:22money because special sessions costs thirty five thousand dollars a day. Yeah, yeah,
- 23:25you're exactly right. I had Stephen, I had last week at HD
- 23:29Media President Dell get Doug scaff on the program, and Steve, I just
- 23:33keep hearing that he may possibly be looking at switching parties, possibly to run
- 23:38for secretary of State. Now he did not elaborate on that. He was
- 23:41a little bit vague on it. He said he has no plans at this
- 23:45time. When politicians say at this time, you got to put that asterisk
- 23:48up there your thoughts. I've heard this rumor twice. Now. I heard
- 23:52this rumor going into July, and then someone else told me this rumor.
- 23:57Both times it came from two from people that are not connected to each other.
- 24:02So I've heard us a couple of times. Doug Scaff certainly is what
- 24:04I would call a conservative in regards to business, in regards to economic issues,
- 24:11social liberal, which is pretty common among sort of the younger group.
- 24:17Anyway, that's not totally dissimilar. It makes kind of sense for the Charleston
- 24:21area, So that would probably be okay if he were to do that.
- 24:25As for running for Secretary of State, I think that would be a hard
- 24:26lift. H just switching parties suggests to do that, especially since you've got
- 24:32longtime Republicans sent in that race, including you know, Brian Wood and c
- 24:36and Chris Pritt. Do Chris Pritt and that sort of thing. Read yeah,
- 24:40yeah, exactly. So I think that that would be a hard lift.
- 24:44But I keep hearing the rumors too, and I keep checking in each
- 24:47week to see if the registrations change. So if I hear at first,
- 24:51I'll let you know. Um, I'll go back to the the Senate race
- 24:55between Governor Justice and Congressman Alex Mooney just for a moment. The Paul Les
- 25:00show that it isn't even close. Greg Thomas on the show though last week,
- 25:03says he thinks Mooney is going to close the gap somewhat as we head
- 25:07toward next year. Your thoughts, Yeah, I think that's right. There
- 25:11was a poll that came out here. There's quarterly morning consult poles that always
- 25:15look at the governors and each state and how their popularity and unpopularity looks,
- 25:19and the Governors is still he still has popular numbers, but he's been in
- 25:25the top five over the last year, he's dropped to the top ten down
- 25:29to the bottom top ten. Still very popular, but his numbers are softening
- 25:33a little bit, and that would coincide a with his announcement of a run
- 25:37and be with some of these negative headlines in regards to the federal lawsuits,
- 25:41banks going after him and just businesses and that sort of thing. So obviously
- 25:45Mooney the Club for Growth, which also backs Mooney, are going to hit
- 25:49Justice repeatedly for that stuff. They got ads out there now on that sort
- 25:52of thing. I think that, and we got a lot of time between
- 25:55now and next primary, so the more they hit that, the more loose
- 25:59numbers could soft. So I think he's right. I think it will narrow
- 26:02some now well, narrow enough for him to win over Justice. I don't
- 26:07know, but I think it will narrow well. And I could just keep
- 26:08hearing that these things are going to come out, more things on Governor Justice,
- 26:12and I've had people on the show and then at texted the show about
- 26:17allegations of some immigration issues with some of his employees down there, and that
- 26:22they're really some of these national groups are really going to hit hard on certain
- 26:26things like that. One thing about it is regardless, Steven, there's gonna
- 26:30be a whole lot of attention on a West Virginia center race. At this
- 26:33time twenty years ago, probably would not have had that much attention. Because
- 26:37the stakes are much higher now. People need to be very prepared for that.
- 26:40Yeah, we're going to have a lot of national news stories on this
- 26:44race because I mean again, we've now for the last couple of cycles,
- 26:48the makeup of the Senate has been a big deal. Right now, it
- 26:52still remains barely majority Democratic, but Republicans have tried to make a couple big
- 26:57pushes on that kind of been kind of interfered with by a certain former president
- 27:02that's kind of screwed that up in my opinion. But yeah, two cycles
- 27:07of that. They are desperate, the Republicans to get the majority back.
- 27:11So every race counts and this one does too. So you're going to see
- 27:14the Democrats poor law Bunny in the list race too, whether it's Joe Mansion
- 27:18or if it's just them trying to keep justice out or whoever wins that law
- 27:22money law attention are coming to West Virginia. All right, speaking you said
- 27:25the magic word there, Stephen and Joe Mansion. I'm going to ask you
- 27:27the same question I ask nearly everybody I have on the show, and that
- 27:32is, does Senator Mansion run for reelection to his Senate seat? Does he
- 27:36run for president or does he not run at all? I think he does
- 27:40whatever is going to work out in his best interest. Now that's a fake
- 27:44answer, but look, I mean, he is the type of person that
- 27:48if he decides to run for Senate, he's going to need a lot of
- 27:49support. So he's gonna need the Democrats coming out. He's going to need
- 27:53all that money that they may not want to spend for anyone else because it
- 27:56looks like it's going to go red, but they might spend it for man
- 28:00jenif there's a chance of him staying in a chance of then pulling out that
- 28:03seat. But at the same time, does he want to have a humil
- 28:07leading loss to a guy that he helped get like at sixteen flip flip parties
- 28:10and fired his wife. I don't know. I wouldn't. What about president,
- 28:14Well, he's gonna lose for president, but he could actually pull that
- 28:17out as well, and use that as a way to parlay some national attention
- 28:22for himself, but the third parties usually lose. What's he going to do.
- 28:26He's only going to do what works out for him allows him to save
- 28:29face. So but what that choices I just don't know yet. Well,
- 28:33I will say this, with all due respect to Senator Mansion. He runs
- 28:37against Jim Justice, he runs against Alex Mooney. Either one he loses in
- 28:41my opinion because the and it's nothing necessarily against Senator Mansion. It's just where
- 28:48West Virginia is right now. And let's go back to twenty eighteen. He
- 28:52barely beat Patrick Morrissey at that in that particular race. So I'm gonna say,
- 29:00you know, I don't know what he's gonna do. I don't.
- 29:02I can say something to Day and then you know, Wednesday be totally proven
- 29:06wrong. I don't think Joe Mansion runs for Senate. I think he does
- 29:10do the presidential thing, and he knows he's not gonna win because there's no
- 29:11way that any third party is going to win. And now the question is
- 29:17is does a Mansion or whomever you know is part of that that whole team.
- 29:22Because I made Lieberman and there maybe some others that will be a part
- 29:23of that as well. Does that help Trump or does it help Biden?
- 29:27Yeah, that is the question. I mean I never take Joe Mansion for
- 29:32granted, he's a great retail politician, but yeah, if he runs for
- 29:36president, that's the hard choice. And I kind of see it to some
- 29:41extent taking votes from certainly both Biden and Trump. If you're a moderate and
- 29:45you want somebody in that moderate sphere, then you're going to vote for Mansion.
- 29:48But I mean, flip a coin, you know, you're we were
- 29:52literally walking into the same situation that we're in and sixteen, where you have
- 29:56two unpopular candidates and it's going to come down to whoever is the least unpopular
- 30:00among the two sixteen it was Clinton, Hillary Clinton and Trump. This year,
- 30:04I think it's gonna be Biden in Trump and whoever is the least unpopular,
- 30:10it's gonna be Biden or Trump. I mean, I watched a lot
- 30:11of other political talk shows over the weekend. I talked about the Sunday Show
- 30:15last week. The majority of Americans, Pole after Pole has said that they
- 30:18don't want Biden and they don't want Trump, regardless of party. But but
- 30:23that's where we're gonna go do. De Santis is falling further and further through
- 30:26the poles. I hear a couple of people here and they're saying the right
- 30:30things. So Tim Scott or Will Hurd got booed at at then I think
- 30:37that was an Iowa was at an Iowa this past weekend where they got booed.
- 30:40Nicki Hayley was making the rounds of the shows and she's, you know,
- 30:42walking that line because you don't want to say anything bad about Trump,
- 30:45but you want to say basically what she was saying as well, it's time
- 30:48for somebody new, you know. So, um I want to throw this
- 30:52out at you. Um So. I mentioned Greg Thomas had Em on the
- 30:56show last week and some of the folks, some of the political strategists have
- 31:00indicated that instead of getting involved in a lot of races next year for House
- 31:06and Senate things like that, they may instead focus their energy toward a lot
- 31:11of county races. I mean, we are seeing steven a complete blood letting
- 31:15right now with county officials who can't get to the county clerk's office quickly enough
- 31:22to change their registration. In my native landown in Logan County. You just
- 31:26had the county clerk that flipped. You just had the sheriff that flipped,
- 31:30which would have been unheard of. You know, this time fifteen twenty years
- 31:33ago, we have a county Commission seat up here in Kanaw County. Next
- 31:37year, we don't know what a commission President Kent Karper's going to do.
- 31:40At this point, we already know Chris Walters is going to run for that.
- 31:42And I'd say all that to say this, there's going to be a
- 31:47lot more focused in some of these county races because I think some of the
- 31:49higher ups in the Republican Party are just kind of looking, you know,
- 31:53as you said, you never want to take anything for granted, but they
- 31:56are looking at some of these House of Delegates raised some of these state Senate
- 32:00races, is saying well, it's going to go Republican. That's just a
- 32:02matter of which Republican gets it. We're going to focus more on the county
- 32:06courthouses. Are you hearing that? Maybe I listen to Greg Thomas talk about
- 32:12that and I see that as a focus for some. But I do see
- 32:15groups, particularly the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, I think are still going
- 32:20to be very focused on the legislature because you know, this past session you
- 32:22did have some pretty significant fights the Form Energy Bill, for example, where
- 32:28you had some Republicans obviously before that fact, well, I mean most Republicans
- 32:30report because the past the bill passed allowing some of that state money to be
- 32:36used in order to entice form Energy in the Northern Panhandle. But you also
- 32:39had a number of Republican lawmakers that didn't think state money should be used for
- 32:43that, or thought the company was woke, or all the sort of stuff.
- 32:46And you saw a lot of chaos in the Senate too, between different
- 32:50factions in the Republican Party. And I think there's going to be an effort,
- 32:52particularly by the Chamber to try to recruit candidates that are more conservative traditional
- 33:00conservative, rankan conservative, business conservative to kind of counteract that. I think
- 33:02a good example was running is Robert Karnes up in Randolph County and Robbie Morris,
- 33:09part of the Economic Development Group up there has been I think recruited by
- 33:15the Chamber. I think you're gonna see some of that focus in the legislature
- 33:19as well. I'm gonna play a little make believe right now, Stephen before
- 33:22we let you go. You are State Democratic Party chair, Mike Pushkin?
- 33:28How do you play this whole thing? How do him? On the show
- 33:30last week and I asked him when could we expect to see some names being
- 33:32thrown out there to run for some of the seats for governor for example,
- 33:36or House or whatever. No one wants to be the Washington Generals. That's
- 33:40an obscure reference. But what I mean is the Generals are the team that
- 33:43get their butts kicked every night by the Harden Club trotters. Nobody wants to
- 33:46be them. I don't see a path forward for hardly any Democrats. If
- 33:52you are a the state Democratic Party chair at this point, what do you
- 33:55do well? First of all, by making me Mike Pushkin, you just
- 33:59gave me the ability to guitar decently, So I appreciate that. Yeah,
- 34:00he gets a good guitars. But but but in all seriousness, I talked
- 34:06to somebody just last weekend about this sort of thing, and I think they
- 34:09are going to try to get some names on the various tickets I mean,
- 34:15and try to get some good names, even if they might lose. I
- 34:17think they want to have some high quality candidates going forward just to fill those
- 34:22ballots spots, particularly board to public works, and I think that it's important
- 34:29for them to fill those ballots because that's one of the things that they've gotten
- 34:31criticism of before. And is it going to be an uphill climb, Yeah,
- 34:36it's going to be an uphill climb, But they they're better off trying
- 34:38to not trying, because you just never know what's going to happen in politics,
- 34:42and maybe something happens in one of those guys gets in. I mean,
- 34:45you gotta do what you can, in my opinion, to distance yourself.
- 34:50If you're a state, if you're a West Virginia Democrat, you've got
- 34:52to do what you can to distance yourself from the Democratic Party or the perception
- 34:57of such on the national level. West Virginia, Stephen is a solidly read
- 35:00state and getting redder by It's it's more red than what it was when I
- 35:05started the show. That's where we are right now, and the further right
- 35:09that the Republicans go in West Virginia, it seems the more the electorate here
- 35:15likes it, and it's like they can't be right enough. And now we're
- 35:19seeing battles on the Republican side well, I'm more I'm more conservative than he
- 35:22is, you know, as you know, I'm more a couple of years
- 35:24ago, I'm more Trumpier than he is, or that she is or whatever.
- 35:29I mean, that's what the Democrats have to do. They've somehow got
- 35:30to distance themselves from the perception of what the National Democratic Party is. Yeah,
- 35:36real quick. I know that some people obviously like to say West Virginia
- 35:38is a Trump state, and that is true to an extent. But I
- 35:42had a good conversation with the Republican political operator the other day. It really
- 35:45made a good point say, look, it just doesn't matter in this state
- 35:47at this point if it's not Trump at somebody else. But this electorate in
- 35:52the state will vote Republican regardless. And you can see that in the presidential
- 35:57stuff, because I mean the last Democratic presidential soon we voted for US Bill
- 36:00Clinton. We've been voting Republican in presidential contestsince eighty four. So it doesn't
- 36:06really matter who it is at this point. REFUW Gun or by your name,
- 36:08you're probably going to do pretty well at this point. All right,
- 36:12before we let you go to have a text, here says a mansion got
- 36:15lucky. He beat Morrissey, who has a personality of a pet rock.
- 36:17Morrissey has no people's skills, and that's why more will win. I'm presuming
- 36:22that they need more capital. Yes I'm a Republican, and no, this
- 36:25is not Greg Thomas texting. According to Morrissey is a hard charger. He's
- 36:30a bulldog. He's a hard campaigner, and that does ruffle some feathers for
- 36:36sure, but it also has worked out for him. So I mean,
- 36:38since twenty twelve he's a winner. I mean, you can you can dislike
- 36:43the guy, you cannot like his person out or whatever. The guy does
- 36:45nothing but win. Morrisey. I mean he did get beat in twenty eighteen,
- 36:47but not by a heck of a lot. That race is today between
- 36:51Morrissey and Mansion. Morrissey wins in my opinion, I think so too.
- 36:53Yeah, what are you keep an eye on today? Thirty seconds? What
- 36:57are you looking at today? Well, when governors starting his administrative briefing on
- 37:00a Monday for a change, so we're doing that. I know he's seeing
- 37:04off National Guard soldiers heading off to the Mexican Texas border. So those were
- 37:08sort of the big things going on right now and right now I'm just trying
- 37:12to get some of the goobernatorial candidates to give me a callback. Okay,
- 37:15well, good luck with that. Steven alt ales with AGDA Newspapers, which

- 45:01Coming up on talk line. This situation on aldis Broadest College is just
- 45:07insane hoppy. Kerchival is going to get into that a little bit later on
- 45:10on talk that Chris Stirewalt from The Dispatch will be on board the show today
- 45:15as well, and former West Forrindida congress from Nick Rayhall. Haven't heard that
- 45:19name in a while. Nick Rayhall is going to be on the show today.
- 45:22That's talk line coming up at ten h six. So I promise you
- 45:27I would get to this and I am needle exchanges. This of course,
- 45:32is not something new. It's not a new discussion at all. We've had.
- 45:36We've discussed it. I've been doing the show now for three years.
- 45:37I have discussed it several times on the show in the past. It's been
- 45:43discussed various places. Well. The discussion is bike. In Charleston last Thursday,
- 45:51over one hundred residents came out to make their voices heard over a newer
- 45:57plan that's coming to light now from the Women's Health Center. The Women's Health
- 46:00Center has applied for a syringe service program license. Now city Council is expected
- 46:07to vote on the program being used or what's proposed to be used at the
- 46:12Women's Health Center on the West Side. I'm told it is going to be
- 46:16discussed at next week city council meeting. Now, the rules say that before
- 46:22a program like that can be put into place or had to be a public
- 46:25hearing, and that's that's what happened last Thursday. That meeting was held at
- 46:30the Goodwill Prosperity Center of Virginia Street West. I did not attend the meeting.
- 46:34Our Jared Lewis Deady covered the meeting for the WCHS Network and Metro News
- 46:37last week. I still go back on the website and read the stories.
- 46:42Now I'm told that there was a mix of people both for and against the
- 46:47program. Iris, And if if you're listening to the show, I totally
- 46:52apologize because I know I'm gonna mispronounce your name. But to Iris Sedictman and
- 46:59again if I got it wrong, I deeply apologized, spoke and said the
- 47:01program will do more than just hand out needles. She talked about the program
- 47:07offering reproductive healthcare, substance abuse treatment, etc. Etc. And there were
- 47:13emails both four and against read at the meetings before the public comment period,
- 47:21and just like with the emails that were read, there were people in attendance
- 47:22during the public comment section that were both foreign against the program. One woman
- 47:27spoke saying that if it weren't for programs like needle exchanges, that she would
- 47:32not be alive. One of those against the program talked about moving to Charleston
- 47:39from the DC area and said he was worried about the program being that close
- 47:44to his house and quite frankly, I get that served. He said that
- 47:51they would be distributing heroin needles his words, to junkies two hundred feet from
- 47:54his house, and that these programs are a magnet for drug users. Now
- 48:00a little history here. Back in twenty eighteen, the can All Charleston Health
- 48:02departments needle exchange was shut down. Legislature, of course, have done what
- 48:07they could curtail some of these programs, allowing to basically saying you have to
- 48:12go through a process in order to do this. And look, the studies
- 48:16have shown that these types of programs do work in lasting the numbers of diseases
- 48:23and whatnot that are associated with IV drug use. YEA. But at the
- 48:30center of all this is the fact that many people, myself included, are
- 48:37of the mindset that while the programs nationwide may be successful in lasting disease and
- 48:46things of that nature, you are still encouraging illegal behavior. And here is
- 48:54the part where I come off as being a cold, unfeeling piece of crap.
- 48:59Be that as an may I don't have a lot of sympathy for drug
- 49:02users. I'm sorry. If that makes me a bad person, so bid.
- 49:08I am more concerned about the person who has to live with the consequences
- 49:13of other people's poor life choices. And trust me, it is a choice.
- 49:19You know how medical professionals will tell you that a glass of wine or
- 49:22alcohol in moderation could be good for you or at least okay, And you
- 49:27know they're proven studies that marijuana can help those that are sick with something,
- 49:31say cancer, possibly to get their appetites back, or could be a much
- 49:36safer alternative to paint pills. Well, folks, there's no good heroine stories.
- 49:39I'm sorry. No doctor is going to say, hey, you should
- 49:44try heroine or fentanyl. It'll help you with your symptoms. Ain't happening.
- 49:52And before someone says you would feel differently if it were someone in your family,
- 49:58no, actually what? In fact, I have a half sister who
- 50:04I haven't seen her talk to since two thousand and three, twenty years have
- 50:08gone by since we talked, and frankly, I'm gonna be honest, I
- 50:13have no idea whether she's dead or a life. She had it all smart,
- 50:17much smarter than I am, which is not really saying a whole lot.
- 50:21College educated, We came from a good, hard working family, no
- 50:24abuse, no is She's like one day she just decided to start taking pain
- 50:29pills when that was the popular thing to do in the early two thousands.
- 50:32She wasn't prescribed to pain pills, no injury. She just got board,
- 50:36decided to start taking pain and she chose that path. Her college education went
- 50:40out the window, her marriage, her kid, she chose drugs overall of
- 50:45She end up losing her kid, our mother, who passed away in twenty
- 50:50nineteen. We couldn't find my sister to even tell her that her mother had
- 50:53passed away. And to this day, I don't know whether she even knows
- 51:00our mother passed away, nor do I even care, and because I'm sure
- 51:04she doesn't. My mother spent the last few years of her life dealing with
- 51:07the restraining orders and whatnot to keep my sister from stealing everything she had to
- 51:10support a drug habit. And I say all that to say this, I
- 51:14am pretty hardcore in my stands on drug users. I have zero tolerance for
- 51:17those who choose a lifestyle and yes, in many cases it is a choice.
- 51:22It is a choice, and you are legitimizing poor lifestyle choices when you
- 51:29hand out materials for someone that is conducting illegal activity. Zero sympathy here,
- 51:36folks. Zero. And I see businesses around Charleston other places displaying science and
- 51:40say we have in the locks own that, of course, being the drugs
- 51:44that can reverse overdose. I see bumper stickers that say that too. We'll
- 51:47just know this you'd around me. I don't care in the locksowne. You've
- 51:51had a bad day. You play stupid games who win stupid prizes. All
- 51:54right, gotta go. Thank you so much to all of our guests on
