- 1:23I've ever written, All I Needed to Know I Learned from Colombo, and
- 1:27that is actually available in the Kindle Store for the iPad, the nook,
- 1:34and in all other formats on smash Words. A lot of folks from around
- 1:40the world are taking a rita. Actually, the last month I have reporting
- 1:44more people bought that book from Australia in the iTunes store than from anywhere else,
- 1:49so thanks a lot. All right, well, now it's time for
- 1:52today's episode of Sherlock Holmes. This one's The Silver Blaze. The Silver Blaze
- 1:57actually g K. Chesterton's favorite Sherlock Holmes story and want to enjoyed quite a
- 2:05bit, so let's go ahead and take a listen. The Adventures of Sherlock
- 2:12Holmes, the Original and Immortal stories of Sir A Conan Doyle's dramatized genial with
- 2:19the Ralph Richardson as Doctor Watson and Sir John Gielgood in the role of Sherlock
- 2:24Holmes, and now the Adventures of John mack Holme. Was Sir John Gielgood
- 2:42at Jelock Holme and Sir Ralph Richardson as our storyteller, Doctor James Watson.
- 2:49Many of the cases of Sherlock Holmes were pilot affairs that made news their outside
- 2:53the family circles involved. The disappearance of Silas Blades was a matter which set
- 3:00the whole country by the ears, but not near they had this horse,
- 3:06the favorite for the West its cup, vanished for a week before the Great
- 3:09Race, but his trainer had also been tragically murdered. This is a small
- 3:16villa about two hundred yards from the stables. And think you have the newspapers
- 3:22there was people they have to say about another. Oh, well he has
- 3:27the hairs. The morning's first, it says, the horses had been exercised
- 3:32and waters as usual on the tables locked up. At nine o'clock through the
- 3:38lads walked up to the trainer's house where they had suffered the kitchens, but
- 3:42the third near the hunter remained on guard. A few minutes after nine,
- 3:47the maid Edith Baxter, carried his supper dish of courage muttons down to the
- 3:54table as the path ran over the open wars. He carried a lamp in
- 4:00with her. About thurty hours away from the stables, the man appeared out
- 4:03of the gossess and called to her to stop, excuse me. Can you
- 4:11tell me where I am? I've ever said of my mind asleep on the
- 4:15moor when I saw your Adansim you're comes tot piling time and stable her.
- 4:19I am what a sort of blood I understand as a stable boy seeps her
- 4:25learn as a night okay, getting call, yes, but you wouldn't be
- 4:32too proud to her in the price of a new dress. Now would do
- 4:36see? The boy gets nate to night and you had the pictures with money
- 4:42can buy Let me past because I'm not giving those fling buttons. Girl was
- 4:46tightened by his manner, and she ran passed into the stable windows, hats
- 4:51through which she always used to hand the boy his needles. The hatch was
- 4:56already open and the boy was waiting inside. He begun to tell him what
- 5:00it happened. When the stage that came up again. I wanted to have
- 5:06a word with you, But what what did missus jerious business? If they
- 5:11put something in your process? There was two of horses and for the wiss
- 5:15cuts silver dres and they are that they have to take tip anyone to do
- 5:19with that. It is the pest of the way to say I could give
- 5:23the other the hand of Johns. So there's not one of them games out
- 5:27well, I'll say I always saves them a king's planet. Just wait when
- 5:29I set the doctor tell us. The boy ran to unleased the dogs,
- 5:36and the maid hurried towards the house, but looking back, he saw the
- 5:41stranger leading in through the stable window. And in this later, when the
- 5:45hunter rushed out with the dog. The stranger was gone. Yes, that's
- 5:51as far as we can get for the morning post. I'm I said,
- 5:54this is Hudson. Let me stupidly use the other half of the paper the
- 5:57lights of Father's morning. It no matter, Idea Phillips. The Telegraph has
- 6:01also covered the account of Villas for the heavy Sea. Hunter, on the
- 6:06return of his fellow grooms, sent a lettage after the trainer Staker to tell
- 6:11him what had happened. Staker seems to have been vaguely uneasier about the matter,
- 6:15for although he'd been to bed, he got up again at one o'clock
- 6:17in the morning, telling his wife that he was going down to the stable
- 6:20to see him all as well. He put on a neck in dash,
- 6:24but it was raining heavy day and left the house. He was quite a
- 6:27welcome detailed idea Lows and here I haven't listened missus s Taka's statements. After
- 6:34her husband had gone out, she went back to sleep again and didn't wait
- 6:38until seven o'clock in the morning. Finding him still ups, she called the
- 6:43maid and they set off together for the stables. They found the door wide
- 6:48and inside huddled on a chair with Hunter in a state of complete stop the
- 6:55magine. The loss overhead had had nothing all night, but the table is
- 6:59stole em fair, and there was no sign of the trackers Hunker had obviously
- 7:02they had been gone about it there. Missus s Taker and the maid left
- 7:08him and ran up to the moor to see about Staker had made it taking
- 7:10a horseye to exercise. And so the murder was this kind? Don't you
- 7:15read me the rest of missus Taker's facing. Oh well, yes, s
- 7:20Some quarter of a mile from the stable, Missus Staker and the maid found
- 7:26Staker's coat flapping from a first wood, and usually beyond there was a booze
- 7:31shaped depression on the moor, and at the bottom of it, young Sakers
- 7:35what he was found He had shattered by a seven blow from some hidey weapons,
- 7:42wounded in the fire, a long clean cusp, evident being picked in
- 7:46by some sharp Faker had obviously tried to defend himself. From his left hand,
- 7:53he grasped a region blest to covette, which is recognized by the maid
- 7:58as having been worn by the finger who's cooking for her outside the stables under
- 8:03The stable boy also identified it when he recovered from the effect of the drugs.
- 8:09This wasn't the talent, say howder opium which had been put into his
- 8:13courage musk. And now that's that's a strange. What the stranger was doing
- 8:16is he went through the stable window was led to eustain or staining our surprise.
- 8:20All right, so only one day it's been drugs. And he goes
- 8:24on to say there were an abundant pool in the mud which lay at the
- 8:28bottom of the take or hollel. But the lifting horse, silver Blaze,
- 8:33had been there at the time of the studdle. Well, wasn't that far
- 8:35star little journey quite a great bit. And here we are terrified courage stock
- 8:54lives like the boss of a shield. In the middle of the huge circle
- 8:58of guard was two gentul from Are waiting for us at the station. Silver
- 9:01Blazed, his owner a well known sports from Colonel ross An intected Gregory Air
- 9:07of Scotland Yard. I'm delighted that he'll come down with the Holmes. The
- 9:11inspector here has that all could possibly be suggested at that time. Wish to
- 9:15heaven bone UNTI and he find to again spots take up and recover my heart,
- 9:20and just that I may be able to assist himself hasn't been in the
- 9:22press. Development find sorry to say we've made very little progress, don't you
- 9:26know? We have had nowhere difficulty in tracing the strings. He was well
- 9:31known in the neighborhood. His name is Fitzroy Simpsons, man who's comes down
- 9:35in the world and lived by a little quiet and genteel bookmaking in the London
- 9:39clubs. His books showed he was carrying backed up to five thousand pounds against
- 9:46the favorite. When confronted with the covert, he turned very pale and was
- 9:50utterly unable to account for the prisons in the hand of the murdered man.
- 9:54Of course, Tracker himself was wounded, wasn't it in the sigh? He
- 9:56may have wounded himself in the conver Since tunnels which follow any brain into it
- 10:03excellent, my dear Watson, It's more than possible. It's probable, in
- 10:05which case one of the main points in Fable of the Accused disappears. A
- 10:11minute later, we were all seated an uncomfortable land though, and we're rolling
- 10:15through the quainted hole. Devint. A town council would tear your case to
- 10:18rags. Why should Sympton take the horse out of the stable if he wished
- 10:22to injury to do it, there hasn't you pick its key to the stable
- 10:26door in time? In his possession? What chemists sold him the part of
- 10:30Oakum? Above all, where could he? He is stranger to the distinct
- 10:35hide a horse and such a horse is? Tell me what is he?
- 10:39That explanation as to the note which he wished to make to get to the
- 10:43stable boy, he says it was a pim proud of note that one was
- 10:46found in his purse. Also, he's not a stranger of the district.
- 10:50He's quite large, as had a start in the summer in Okims. He
- 10:54probably brought with him from London. The team having service curve will be heard
- 10:58away And to the horse, they were well lied at the bottom of one
- 11:03of the pits or old mines up in the world. What did he say
- 11:07about the cavett we neget that it his and says that he lost it.
- 11:11That's a new element has been introduced into the case. It may account to
- 11:15be leading a horse to the table. We found traces that showed that a
- 11:18party of dipsys in camp on Monday night within a mile of the spot where
- 11:22the mayor took place on tuesdays they were gone. Timpton may well have been
- 11:28leading the horse to them when he was overtaken. It's certainly possible as being
- 11:33scar accord him. Meanwhile, I've examined every table and out hunting Tebeto,
- 11:37and for a radius of ten miles there's another fainting table fit close. I
- 11:41believe yes, And that's a factor we must certainly not neglect as the dest
- 11:48Birs, as their horse were taken in the beat room, they had an
- 11:50interest in the disappearance of the silver Blaze. Saylas Brown, the had trader
- 11:56is known who had large bets upon the event, and he was no friend
- 12:01the poorst breaker, however, will We've examined his tables and there's nothing to
- 12:05commit him with the affair and nothing to connectors by Simpson. Was there interest
- 12:09and losing at pauls Ah? Well, here we are. Our driver pulled
- 12:18up at the little red brick biller which stood by the road. Colonel Ross
- 12:22asked him whether he would like to go on to the scene of a crime.
- 12:26I think I decided to stay out of it a while, and going
- 12:28to one of two questions of details, Freaker was brought back to I suppose
- 12:33he liked upstairs the English this tomorrow. He's been in your set of some
- 12:37years, Colonel. I've always found him an excellent servant. I presume you
- 12:41made an inventory of what he had in his pocket of the band as his
- 12:43best inspector. I had you seen from cells here in the sitting room a
- 12:50box of matches, two into the callow candle, pencil case, a few
- 12:56papers, and the ivory handled knife. There is singular knife, Watson Sully
- 13:03in your line. It's what they call a cataract knife, used for surgical
- 13:07purposes. He's teasing a very delicate operation, a strange thing for a man
- 13:11to carry with him on a rough expedition. By won't even shut up to
- 13:13go into his pocket. The kick was guarded by a cork which was parmoside
- 13:16his body. His wife shows us did he kept it for some days in
- 13:20the dredging table and picked it up. He left the room, poor weapon
- 13:24that perhaps the basic would lay his hands on at the moment, and the
- 13:26paper hey dealer's account is this letter from Colonel Ross and this dreat baker's account
- 13:35for thirty seven pounds fifteen made out by Madame Lazella of Bunsby. Actually that
- 13:41middle piece, certainly it's made out to William Darbysham. William Arbysher. Mister
- 13:46Daker tells us he was a friend of her husbands and that occasionally letters for
- 13:50him will addressed here. Has he been staying here? Then? Did he
- 13:56is taken on him? I gather not? But here is with his taker,
- 14:00mister Sherlock Holmes, missus Daker, how do you do, sir?
- 14:03How do you do? Missus? Taker? Who do you have before the
- 14:09garden party in Cimit recently? Now? Sorry, you must be a mistake.
- 14:13I'm sure I wanted you wore a costume of colored stustris fell the trimmings,
- 14:18never had such addressed, sir. Well, that's settled to them.
- 14:24Excuse me, sir, I'd like a word with a current. Of course,
- 14:28I'll leave with you in a moment, mister Holmes, Oh et ceteras
- 14:33home, I believe you got your hand on a clue, or do you?
- 14:37As a matter of fact, I was just remembering a really excellent career.
- 14:41We want set together in so ho in a moment. We continue this
- 14:46week's story in the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, And now we continue the Adventures
- 14:52of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes next art to be shown the spot where the
- 15:07murder has been committed. The short walk cross the moor brought us to the
- 15:13hollow in which somebody had been found. At the brinklet was the first bush
- 15:18upon which the making cost belonging to the murdered man had been hung. There
- 15:24was no wind that night, I understand then, but very heavy rains when
- 15:28it Let's say, if the cook was not blown against the third bushes,
- 15:31it must have been passed. Yes, it was laid across the bush.
- 15:35Very interesting in this bag, I have one of the books with straighter wall.
- 15:39One of fitz joys into schools, and the cursed horse too was silver
- 15:43blade. My dear, better you surpass your first homes. Took the bag,
- 15:48and descending into the hollow, he made a careful study of the trampled
- 15:54mud in front of him. Hello, what's the something that chay text the
- 16:00night? Counting? How I can admit it? It is invisible? There
- 16:03is in the mud. I only find it because I was looking for it.
- 16:06But I'm expected to find this. I thought, it's not unlike this.
- 16:11You know, first the fathers around the rim of the hollover any more
- 16:12texts, of course I'm afraid of are none. I've examined the ground very
- 16:17carefully for our hundred guards. Its direction good. Then I'm take a little
- 16:21walk over the moors before it good dark, and I think I'll put this
- 16:25horsh in my pocket just for luck. I suppose you know your own to
- 16:30Holmes. Perhaps you will come back with me in sect A. There's several
- 16:33matters in which I need your advice, especially as to whether we owe to
- 16:37the public to expect to the base from the west. It stuff certainly not,
- 16:41Colonel, I should let the name stamp. I am very glad to
- 16:44have you on a thing, and so is he. Later on, when
- 16:47you finish your walk, Colonel Russon in sector went back to the villa as
- 16:53homes now I walked, so they're across the more he maybe the question of
- 16:57who killed John Straker at the moment and consign ourselves to finding our wasn't becoming
- 17:03a horse now supposing you broke away, if you're in or after the tragedy,
- 17:07where could you have got to almost anywhere? On that more, I
- 17:11said, imaginement. Their nervous horse is a vigarious animal. It's not to
- 17:15himself. The instincts would have been able to return to King's Thailand, or
- 17:18they're all over to Capleton yonder, Why should he run wild up from the
- 17:22more If he's not at King's Island, he must be over there at Capleton.
- 17:27Come along, they're not fat atill. And as we approached the gates
- 17:33of Capleton we met a groom coming out of them. We don't want any
- 17:38lawyeries around here. I only wanted to ask you a question. Would I
- 17:42be too early to see your master and mister Silas Brown if I were to
- 17:47call her five o'clock to morrow morning? We'll bless you here if anyone is
- 17:51about it over them? We always afraid during what said or wasn't on that
- 17:56visit the new there? Whatever would you want here? Minutes? Talk with
- 18:00you, my good sirs. I'm no time to talk to every gather at
- 18:03us, and we don't want to change it. Yes, we ask you,
- 18:04and I find a dog at heals. One word in your ear,
- 18:07my friend, in your own interests with the life and internal life, very
- 18:15good? So we argue about it here in public or talking it over in
- 18:18your parlor? Or do I go to the police ten minutes before he returned.
- 18:25It should be done to just if you wish it, And I said,
- 18:27no mistakes. Now a day should be no mistakes. It should be
- 18:30there. Should I change it first or not? No, no, don't.
- 18:37I will write to you about that. No tricks now, No you
- 18:41can tast me. You can try, yes, I think I can.
- 18:45Well you will hear from me tomorrow. Good day. Do you're a good
- 18:48day? And see what a more perfect compounds the women cured and sneak than
- 18:53Master Silas. But I have seldom that he has a horston or he tried
- 18:57to bluster with out, but I show him to exactly what his actions had
- 19:00been that morning that he's convinced I was actually watching him. He was first
- 19:06down as usual, and seeing a strange horse wandering on the morning, he
- 19:08went out to it. When he recognized it a silver blade from the white
- 19:12splash on its body, his first instinct were to return it to the King's
- 19:17pylon stable, which he set out to do. But then he realized that
- 19:21if the horse could only be hidden till after the west ex cup his own
- 19:23horse days brow and almost certainly wind, so he changed his mind and turned
- 19:26back halfway brought silver Blade down to his own stable, but I thought his
- 19:30tables had been fallow his sword old horsetaker, like him as many a dodge
- 19:36at aunt, you are afraid to leave the horse's are now ch is every
- 19:40interest in injuring it, My dear fellow he had guarded like the apple of
- 19:44his eyes. He knows that his only hope of mercy is to produce it
- 19:47safely at the racetrack for the Westix Cup. I made that perfectly clear to
- 19:51him. But I have a little text to play on Colonel Ross. He
- 19:55made noticed that his manner to me he was still triful cavalier. So neither
- 20:00of us, please, for the present, would say anything to him about
- 20:03the horse for a certain atlantitude wishes. And of course this is all quite
- 20:06a minor matter compared with the question of who killed John's taker and who would
- 20:11devote yourself to that. In the meantime, on the country, we will
- 20:14both go back to London by the night trad I was fund the start on
- 20:19my friend's world. We've only been a few hours, and he gaven too
- 20:23that he should give up an investigation which he had begun so brilliant. It
- 20:27was quite incomprehensible to me. Not one word more could I draw from him
- 20:33until we were back at the trainer's house, where the camel and the inspector
- 20:37were waiting for us. My friend and I returned to Time by the midnight
- 20:40express. We've had a charming little breath of your dastor, so you would
- 20:45despair of arresting the dress for us to take us to us certainly great difficulties
- 20:48in the way. I had every hope, however, that your horse will
- 20:52be at the race tech next Tuesday, and I think if you would have
- 20:53your jockey and readiness for me, I take this photograph of John's taker with
- 20:59me back to Time. The really set up. I'm rather disappointed now,
- 21:03London consultant, and now I don't need to put any stars. Doesn't when
- 21:07he came, at least your head is assurance that your horse will run next
- 21:10week. Yes, I had his assurance. I should prefer to have my
- 21:14horse. We went outside, Goodbye, goodbye, Colon. I hope to
- 21:18see you with the Westis Cup and full the blade. Four days later,
- 21:33Holmes and I saw Silver Blaze win the Wstix Cup by a good six lings.
- 21:38Be there's not a silver blaze that even its owner could recognize. There
- 21:44was no trace to be seen as a famous white splash on his podead,
- 21:48all of the muffled off fall it. The silver Blaze that won the Westix
- 21:52Cup was a powerful bay. It was only in the way and churs after
- 21:56the race where the homes again. To explained to a colonel who was completely
- 22:02bewildered, you wanted to wash his face and his leg in spirits the behind,
- 22:07and you will find that he's just the same old silver blaze or whatever.
- 22:11She would take my beat away as I find him in the hands of
- 22:15a faker, and took the liberty of running him just as he would sent
- 22:18over my dear. So you done, wonders, I owe you a thousand
- 22:21the policies. You've done me a very great service by recovering my horse.
- 22:26You would give me a greater still if you could lay your hands on the
- 22:29mudge. I've done, Staker, I've done so, You've done so.
- 22:32You've got him. But where if he was, he's in a hard company
- 22:34at the present moment. Let is either a very bad joke with the Holmes
- 22:40or is it an insult? I am not a luker. The real murderer
- 22:45is standing immediately before you the horse. The horse over blaze himself. It
- 22:55may listen the gift somewhat if I say that the killing was done entirely in
- 22:59self descent, and the John Saker was a man who was quite unworthy of
- 23:03your confidence. There goes the bell, And as I stand to win a
- 23:08little on the next lace, I shall defer a lengthier explanations till a more
- 23:12fitting time. It was not until we were on our way back to London,
- 23:26but Homers would get down to these explanations, despite the impatience of both
- 23:32the colonel and myself. I must consider that I even suspected sit so I
- 23:37Simpson myself at the time. It is only when I reached the trainer's house
- 23:42that the immense significance of the courage mustin occurtain. The courage mustin you mean
- 23:47when you mentioned our sir home meal exactly parted opium has a disagreeable and perceptible
- 23:52flavor. Only something more strongly flavored, like a courage, could have disguise
- 23:57the taste. Our fixth wife Simpsons would never have known that the maid would
- 24:02be served in the stable laber to carry that night. The only people who
- 24:04could have known that, for people in my house, so whom could have
- 24:07taken advantage of the deck. Then there was a silence of the dog.
- 24:11When the horse was taken from the table. It failed the bar because he
- 24:15knew who the intruder bar. I was already quite convinced that the intruder must
- 24:21have been John Staker himself. John Staker himself, why did he wish to
- 24:25take silver blades out onto the moor and the dead of night? And secretly
- 24:29the answer to that is in John's s Taker's pocket. When Driftmaker's built,
- 24:32I said, addressed to William Gathersher. That set me thinking perhaps John s
- 24:37Taker was leading a double life. After all, his wife's confirmed that the
- 24:41expensive costume wasn't for her, and I recognized in the first that I showed
- 24:47her. Madame Legerier, the driftmaker later confirmed the John Steaker had indeed boards
- 24:52there gives to a woman of more expensive tastes. In fact, John Staker
- 24:57was leading a double life and was in their financial shape. John sick,
- 25:03I could sketch him be leaf. The knife gave me the finals. It
- 25:07was a surgical knife that just could be used to lame a horse without leaving
- 25:11any visible evidence of the foul players. By laming silver blaze and letting on
- 25:17Debra John, the faker would have been able to retrieve his fortunate candles.
- 25:21And then I trusted. He led the horse out onto the work so that
- 25:25when he cut his tendom, his plunging wouldn't wait in the rooms overhead.
- 25:30In order that he could see what he was getting do he needed a candle,
- 25:33as the candle should not be seen, He led the horse to the
- 25:34hollow. Lighting the candle, he dropped that spent match in the mud.
- 25:40Unfortunately for him. The knights not to scare the horse unless it was instinct,
