- 1:27Speaker 2: the show started off the day with a little bit
- 1:29Speaker 2: of fog. Metro News meteorologist Brian Houston has another great
- 1:32Speaker 2: day here in the valley, but a little warmer today.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Temps in the mid-80s, clear tonight, low around 66. Now
- 1:37Speaker 2: we're going to reintroduce some of the heat and humidity
- 1:39Speaker 2: for tomorrow, and with that will come a chance of
- 1:41Speaker 2: some showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures in the upper 80s, heating
- 1:44Speaker 2: index back to below 90s. Some morning rain on Friday,
- 1:46Speaker 2: but turning out nice late in the day. Highs in
- 1:48Speaker 2: the mid-80s. Good looking weekend. Lots of sun, warm temperatures,
- 1:52Speaker 2: no rain. Highs are going to be in the mid
- 1:54Speaker 2: to upper 80s, maybe 90 by the time Sunday rolls around.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You can download the Metro News television app for Brian's
- 1:59Speaker 2: team of meteorologists and follow along on social media as well.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Coming up, I'm excited about the return of football and
- 2:05Speaker 2: the Metro News High School sports line is back tonight's
- 2:09Speaker 2: We'll get into that coming up a little bit later on,
- 2:10Speaker 2: plus a preview of the games that we're going to

- 2:15Speaker 2: this year we are covering West Virginia State on 107.3
- 2:18Speaker 2: The Beats. And we've added a coach's show this year.
- 2:21Speaker 2: That is going to be at the pitch. Daniel Woods,
- 2:23Speaker 2: all things West Virginia State. He'll join us a little
- 2:25Speaker 2: bit later on in the show. And, of course, we've
- 2:27Speaker 2: got our continuing coverage of Dolly Parton as well. Some
- 2:29Speaker 2: other things in the news. Your calls and texts. Guarantee
- 2:33Speaker 2: Bank Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony B. Taylor, text 304-935-5008. The Chef's
- 2:41Speaker 2: Challenge Benefiting Covenant House coming up September the 15th at
- 2:45Speaker 2: the Coliseum and Convention Center. And we have Brianna Martin
- 2:49Speaker 2: here and Chef Dennis Harris. To talk about it. Chef,
- 2:51Speaker 2: we'll start with you. Good morning. Welcome to the show.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Good morning, sir.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And Brianna, great to have you on the show again.
- 2:56Speaker 2: You haven't been on in a while.
- 2:57Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave. You are correct. We've got to fix that.
- 3:01Speaker 2: You know where we are. Been here for 99 years now,
- 3:04Speaker 2: as I told you in the green room. I have
- 3:06Speaker 2: only been there half of that time now. But you're
- 3:08Speaker 2: always welcome on the show. First of all, talk about
- 3:11Speaker 2: the work of Covenant House. I want to talk about
- 3:13Speaker 2: that first, and we'll talk about the events. What do
- 3:14Speaker 2: these folks do? Sure.
- 3:16Speaker 6: We are a social service nonprofit. that specializes in food, housing,
- 3:21Speaker 6: and access to health care. We have been in the
- 3:24Speaker 6: business over 45 years. So this is our 16th Annual
- 3:29Speaker 6: Chefs Challenge, where we just bring what we call local
- 3:31Speaker 6: celebrity chefs together to support a great cause. So we
- 3:37Speaker 6: are looking forward to it. We've got a myriad of
- 3:40Speaker 6: chefs participating this year. There are 12 chefs coming to
- 3:43Speaker 6: the table to put together one delicious menu.
- 3:49Speaker 2: And see, I'm a foodie. You know that. If you
- 3:51Speaker 2: listen to me on the air on a regular basis,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you know this. So try not to have me chewing
- 3:56Speaker 2: on the new equipment here, okay?
- 3:58Speaker 6: Listen, Dave, I'm going to do like I did with Jenny.
- 4:01Speaker 6: I'm going to give you a sneak peek of this menu.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:05Speaker 6: And then you can chew on that paper and tell
- 4:07Speaker 6: me what it tastes like.
- 4:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:09Speaker 5: All right.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Chef Dennis, I appreciate you being here as well, making
- 4:12Speaker 2: your debut with us here on the show. I believe
- 4:14Speaker 2: you've not been on the show before, have you?
- 4:15Speaker 5: It's been a while. I mean, okay.
- 4:17Speaker 2: It's great to have you on the show. Give us
- 4:21Speaker 2: your bio, Chef Dennis.
- 4:23Speaker 5: I've been a part of this event for probably 10 years.
- 4:26Speaker 5: It is an awesome event to support and get behind.
- 4:30Speaker 5: It's the one time a year where chefs actually get
- 4:32Speaker 5: together and have a little camaraderie in the kitchen. As
- 4:37Speaker 5: a chef, sometimes you're very busy and don't get to
- 4:39Speaker 5: see other chefs in the industry because they're busy as well.
- 4:42Speaker 5: This is that one opportunity a year that I can
- 4:45Speaker 5: go in the kitchen and They're like, why are you
- 4:48Speaker 5: and Chef Paul hugging so much?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Because we haven't seen each other since the last one.
- 4:53Speaker 2: All right. Talk about where you're a chef and talk
- 4:57Speaker 2: about your background. How did you get into this whole
- 4:59Speaker 2: food game?
- 5:00Speaker 5: I'm actually right now the director of operations slash executive
- 5:03Speaker 5: chef at Sleepy Hollow. My previous was a 12-year tenure
- 5:07Speaker 5: as the chef at Edgewood Country Club. And prior to that,
- 5:10Speaker 5: Aubrey's Yorkshire Pub and Eatery in St. Albans. Okay.
- 5:13Speaker 2: All right. So we got Chef Dennis, Chef Keith. Chef
- 5:19Speaker 2: Todd Jones, General Manager Kevin Madison. He's with Black Sheep Burrito.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Correct.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Chef Terry Blevin.
- 5:27Speaker 6: Yes.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Where is Chef Terry from?
- 5:28Speaker 6: She's a little bit ahead in cupcakes.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 2: That's right. We've interviewed her on the show in the past.
- 5:34Speaker 2: You know, she's like Paula Deen's personal cupcake maker.
- 5:38Speaker 6: I have seen the pictures and heard the stories.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Now, how cool is that, that Chef Paula Deen calls
- 5:45Speaker 2: her when she wants cupcakes?
- 5:46Speaker 6: It's really, really incredible. I mean, we have, I would,
- 5:50Speaker 6: I like to call it some culinary artiste in our state.
- 5:55Speaker 6: And you can clearly see by the menu that you're reading.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Yeah, we're going to get to that in a minute.
- 6:01Speaker 6: What we have here. And I hope people will come
- 6:03Speaker 6: out and check out the showcase of our chefs.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And we get Chef Chase Collier, restauranteer bruising.
- 6:10Speaker 6: Yes, this is his first year participating, so I'm very
- 6:14Speaker 6: happy to have Chef Chase.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And he was nominated for a James Beard Award. Am
- 6:17Speaker 2: I correct about that?
- 6:18Speaker 6: I hope he joins us for years to come.
- 6:20Speaker 2: All right, and Chef Betty Reed. Tell us about Chef
- 6:22Speaker 2: Betty Reed.
- 6:23Speaker 6: Chef Betty comes to us from Embassy, so she's been
- 6:25Speaker 6: over at Embassy. You know what's funny about Chef Betty?
- 6:28Speaker 6: Chef Betty moves silently. When I tell you, she will
- 6:33Speaker 6: swoop in. And drop off her things and then leave.
- 6:37Speaker 6: She doesn't want to be in the picture. She doesn't
- 6:39Speaker 6: want the accolades. She just truly enjoys participating in the event.
- 6:43Speaker 6: And so sometimes I may never see Chef Betty.
- 6:46Speaker 2: She does her stuff and leaves. Chef John Macklin. Tell
- 6:49Speaker 2: me about Chef John Macklin.
- 6:51Speaker 6: He's incredible. He is at Edgewood now. So he participated
- 6:57Speaker 6: years ago before I sat at the helm by way
- 7:00Speaker 6: of Mardi Gras Casino. So at that time, he was
- 7:03Speaker 6: representing the casino cooking, but he's just now coming back
- 7:07Speaker 6: to the table for us this year. So we're really excited. Now,
- 7:10Speaker 6: he is making some pork belly. However, I don't eat pork,
- 7:16Speaker 6: so I'm going to miss that. So everybody else will
- 7:18Speaker 6: just have to tell me what it tastes like.
- 7:19Speaker 2: You've got plenty other options down there.
- 7:21Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Chef Evan Wilson. Tell me about Chef Evan Wilson.
- 7:25Speaker 6: Fazio's. He's Fazio's now. So Chef Evan has been with
- 7:29Speaker 6: us for years. I love Chef Evan. Chef Evan truly
- 7:33Speaker 6: enjoys the event, and I don't care where he goes.
- 7:35Speaker 6: I don't care what restaurant he might pop up in.
- 7:38Speaker 6: He's always going to be at the table. He always
- 7:40Speaker 6: tells me, count me in.
- 7:41Speaker 7: I'm there.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And Chef Morgan Morrison, of course, from Rock City. Chef
- 7:47Speaker 2: Morgan and I go way, way back. She's from my hometown.
- 7:49Speaker 2: She's a Charleston girl now, but she's a Logan girl,
- 7:52Speaker 2: just so you know.
- 7:54Speaker 6: That is my girl. Love Chef Morgan. She truly loves
- 7:59Speaker 6: Covenant House. She loves the community. She loves what she
- 8:02Speaker 6: is doing. Have you seen her lately, this singing in
- 8:05Speaker 6: Lincoln and all this.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Stuff that she's been doing?
- 8:08Speaker 6: Listen, I'm putting her on the spot right now. I
- 8:11Speaker 6: want her to be picked up in that Lincoln. I
- 8:13Speaker 6: want to sing. I can't sing, but I want to.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Well, I'll go along with you if she picks us
- 8:18Speaker 2: up there.
- 8:19Speaker 6: Okay, Chef Morgan, it's a challenge. Dave Allen, Breonna Martin,
- 8:24Speaker 6: singing in the Lincoln.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Megan Moses, you hear us? We're calling.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 6: We need that Lincoln ride.
- 8:30Speaker 2: A little trio.
- 8:31Speaker 6: That's right.
- 8:31Speaker 3: We can do that.
- 8:32Speaker 6: Maybe we can take Chef Dennis to go get his
- 8:35Speaker 6: tattoo when we sell out the event.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Let me get to one more chef here, and then
- 8:40Speaker 2: we'll talk about this tattoo. Chef Paul Smith, I mean,
- 8:42Speaker 2: does he need any introduction? He's Chef Paul. Okay. So you,
- 8:46Speaker 2: Chef Dennis, have said that if this event sells out,
- 8:49Speaker 2: you're going to get a tattoo, right?
- 8:50Speaker 8: Indeed.
- 8:51Speaker 3: All right.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Tell us about the tattoo.
- 8:53Speaker 5: It is a character that they created as part of
- 8:56Speaker 5: the ad campaign for this year's event. This commemorates my
- 8:59Speaker 5: 10th year doing it. And they're like, hey, chef, what
- 9:02Speaker 5: if you sell out and you get this tattoo? And
- 9:05Speaker 5: I'm just like, okay. All right.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Now, do you have any tattoos?
- 9:10Speaker 5: I do.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I have some chef-themed tattoos. I didn't see any until
- 9:13Speaker 2: you turned your arm.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I have a chef from South Park on my legs.
- 9:18Speaker 2: All the good chefs are on there.
- 9:20Speaker 9: All right.
- 9:20Speaker 2: So let's talk about the actual menu now. Chef Dennis,
- 9:23Speaker 2: I'll start. I don't know if we have time to
- 9:25Speaker 2: go through everything, but I'm going to start with you.
- 9:26Speaker 2: What are you making?
- 9:27Speaker 5: I'm making a watermelon gazpacho.
- 9:29Speaker 2: All right. Explain that to us.
- 9:30Speaker 5: It's basically a watermelon-based cold soup with other vegetables inside.
- 9:36Speaker 5: Very refreshing, very light, vegetarian-friendly. A lot of times I
- 9:40Speaker 5: do these events, I kind of want everybody to experience
- 9:44Speaker 5: what I make. So I try to make it gluten-free,
- 9:48Speaker 5: all those things that people cannot eat. I try to
- 9:51Speaker 5: do a dish that everyone can have.
- 9:55Speaker 2: And Chef Keith's going to do the specialty dinner roll.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Chef Todd Jones is going to get the Italian thing going.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I'm not even going to pretend to know how to
- 10:03Speaker 2: pronounce it unless you know. It's chicken.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Salt and vodka.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Just like it looks.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 10:07Speaker 2: All right. And explain what that is.
- 10:10Speaker 5: Basically, it's a chicken breast with sage and prosciutto wrapped.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Sorry, did I say that out loud?
- 10:17Speaker 10: No.
- 10:18Speaker 5: It's very good.
- 10:19Speaker 7: All right.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And Chef Kevin Madison, of course, he is going to be,
- 10:23Speaker 2: he's from Black Sheep Produce. He's doing a shrimp dish, right?
- 10:26Speaker 5: Shrimp ceviche.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Ceviche. Now, what is shrimp ceviche?
- 10:29Speaker 5: Basically, it's a citrus cured shrimp with peppers. It's really good. Okay.
- 10:35Speaker 5: All right.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Of course, Chef Terry is going to be doing bruleed
- 10:39Speaker 2: apple tart macaron. Now, is it macaron or macaroons?
- 10:43Speaker 5: Macaroons. Okay.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I've seen it both ways. Brûlée' d apple tart macaroons and
- 10:50Speaker 2: red wine chocolate truffles. Suddenly, my wife, if she's listening
- 10:54Speaker 2: right now, just did a, if she's driving, she did
- 10:57Speaker 2: a U-turn.
- 10:59Speaker 6: September 15th.
- 11:00Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Coliseum Convention Center.
- 11:02Speaker 1: That's right.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Chef Chase Collier is going to do Appalachia stuff with
- 11:06Speaker 2: trout cake. With green tomato and bacon jam, ramp aioli,
- 11:11Speaker 2: and buttermilk foam. Chef Dennis, help me with this. What
- 11:13Speaker 2: is trout cake?
- 11:15Speaker 5: Basically, it's almost like a salmon cake, except they make
- 11:18Speaker 5: it with trout. Okay.
- 11:19Speaker 10: All right.
- 11:20Speaker 8: I'm in on that.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Chef Betty Reed, help me out here. Mombata? Batata?
- 11:26Speaker 9: Yes.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Okay.
- 11:26Speaker 6: It's a lamb dish.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 11:28Speaker 6: I'm looking forward to it.
- 11:29Speaker 2: It's a potato dish with steamed red potatoes and lamb stuffing.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I'm in on that. Chef John Macklin doing the Jamaican thing.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Crispy jerk marinated pork belly with smooth grilled plantain puree,
- 11:41Speaker 2: smoked pineapple salsa, and an Appleton rum reduction.
- 11:45Speaker 5: Chef Dennis. Exciting.
- 11:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Chef Evan Wilson doing some more Italian stuff. Wild mushroom arancini?
- 11:54Speaker 5: Yep, arancini.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Arancini, okay. I need my man Tony the tailor to
- 11:58Speaker 2: help me. Perenzino, where are you? And he's got some
- 12:02Speaker 2: other great things going on there. And Chef Morgan, as
- 12:04Speaker 2: you said, is going to be doing a couple different desserts,
- 12:08Speaker 2: one from Mexico, one from Brazil, and one from Sweden.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Chef Paul is going to be helping you out as well.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And the thing I like about it, and all this
- 12:15Speaker 2: information is available on your website. We'll get that a
- 12:17Speaker 2: little bit later on. But I do want to remind
- 12:19Speaker 2: people that these are primarily– you're making these things– with
- 12:23Speaker 2: things that you normally find that are easily available. Talk
- 12:26Speaker 2: about that, Brianna.
- 12:27Speaker 6: So that's the challenge. While we bring together the local
- 12:31Speaker 6: celebrity chefs that often don't have time to come together
- 12:34Speaker 6: until an event such as this happens, that challenge is
- 12:37Speaker 6: not amongst the chefs, but the challenge is with the food.
- 12:40Speaker 6: And we host a food pantry at Covenant House. And
- 12:44Speaker 6: so that challenge is preparing or coming up with a
- 12:47Speaker 6: menu item that would have some type of an ingredient
- 12:50Speaker 6: included that could be found on the shelves of our pantry,
- 12:54Speaker 6: showcasing that gourmet food can still be made from food
- 12:57Speaker 6: that can be found in your local food pantry. Roughly,
- 13:01Speaker 6: we have about 14% of our area here that is
- 13:08Speaker 6: food insecure. And so it, again, comes back. All the
- 13:13Speaker 6: funds that are generated from this event come back to
- 13:16Speaker 6: benefit all the programs and services that we operate there
- 13:18Speaker 6: at Covenant House. And of course, and that is the
- 13:22Speaker 6: food pantry. So it does benefit from this. And so
- 13:24Speaker 6: we like to showcase it and highlight it. And this year,
- 13:26Speaker 6: we'll be honoring the Reverend Jim Lewis, whom we just
- 13:30Speaker 6: lost just a few months back. And he was a
- 13:32Speaker 6: founding father of Covenant House. And so what better way
- 13:36Speaker 6: to celebrate but by food and bringing people together?
- 13:41Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Absolutely. And when you use the term food insecure, that's
- 13:47Speaker 2: got a lot of different connotations. It doesn't necessarily, and
- 13:51Speaker 2: here's my definition, you can correct me if I'm wrong,
- 13:53Speaker 2: it doesn't necessarily mean I have no food all the time.
- 13:56Speaker 2: It can mean I don't know where, I know where
- 13:59Speaker 2: my meals today are taking care of, that are where
- 14:01Speaker 2: I'm going to eat today, but I don't know where
- 14:03Speaker 2: I'm going to eat tomorrow. That's the definition of food insecurity.
- 14:06Speaker 2: It's not necessarily I don't have any food. It's just
- 14:09Speaker 2: I don't always know where my next meal is coming from.
- 14:11Speaker 6: That is correct. That is very correct. So a lot
- 14:15Speaker 6: of the population that we serve at Covenant House, they're working.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Yes. Here's what gets lost in a lot of this stuff.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I'm going to be honest with you. And it doesn't
- 14:23Speaker 2: matter whether it's you guys. I talked to my friends
- 14:26Speaker 2: at Union Mission and Mountain Mission. A great number of
- 14:30Speaker 2: people that utilize these resources. As a matter of fact,
- 14:32Speaker 2: I can tell you with one of those, the majority
- 14:34Speaker 2: of people are working people. Talk about that.
- 14:37Speaker 6: You are correct. Majority are working. The other portion... are
- 14:41Speaker 6: living on a fixed income. And so when it comes
- 14:44Speaker 6: down to trying to meet rent and utilities and keep
- 14:48Speaker 6: your family fed, then they don't always have the means
- 14:53Speaker 6: and resources to make that stretch. So fortunately, we are
- 14:57Speaker 6: able to offer the services of that food pantry that
- 15:00Speaker 6: can help supplement that family's needs for that month. Many
- 15:05Speaker 6: of the families, they also serve SNAP benefits. But when
- 15:09Speaker 6: they begin working, those SNAP benefits, they begin to titrate down,
- 15:13Speaker 6: and it's more difficult to make their dollar stretch. So
- 15:17Speaker 6: we're fortunate to have our food pantry where we're able
- 15:20Speaker 6: to get food to people's tables and do the best
- 15:24Speaker 6: that we can with what we're given.
- 15:25Speaker 2: This event, again, has happened at the Connoisseur Convention Center
- 15:28Speaker 2: on September the 15th, and I think it says something
- 15:30Speaker 2: to all these chefs that are involved, Chef Dennis, because
- 15:32Speaker 2: as a chef, you've been a chef for a long time,
- 15:34Speaker 2: and you know what it's like, and you know that you,
- 15:37Speaker 2: you covet any time away. I mean, as much as
- 15:40Speaker 2: you like cooking, you know, you like a little time
- 15:42Speaker 2: off every now and then, but you guys are all
- 15:43Speaker 2: giving of your time and your talents to be able
- 15:46Speaker 2: to do this. So you obviously believe in the mission.
- 15:48Speaker 5: Oh, 100%. Um, I've been a part of this event
- 15:50Speaker 5: for a long time. It's very, uh, near and dear
- 15:52Speaker 5: to my heart. So like I said, with this being
- 15:55Speaker 5: my 10th year, being a part of it and them
- 15:57Speaker 5: approaching me to say, Hey chef, would you reward your,
- 16:00Speaker 5: this event by, you know, selling out or helping us
- 16:03Speaker 5: sell out to Go get a tattoo if we sell out.
- 16:07Speaker 5: They knew who to ask. They know it's hard for
- 16:09Speaker 5: me to say no when it comes to supporting this awesome,
- 16:13Speaker 5: awesome event.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Give us the website again, Brianna.
- 16:16Speaker 6: West Virginia Covenant House. West Virginia Covenant House. Let me
- 16:19Speaker 6: say that again because there are some other advertisements that occur.
- 16:24Speaker 3: TV.
- 16:27Speaker 6: They don't have anything to do with West Virginia Covenant House.
- 16:29Speaker 6: So when you see Covenant House, look for WV in
- 16:32Speaker 6: the front of it. They're a standalone grassroots organization.
- 16:34Speaker 2: And you can get your tickets on that website?
- 16:36Speaker 6: Correct.
- 16:37Speaker 2: And get them soon because the event is September the 15th,
- 16:39Speaker 2: and it is going to sell out, and he's going
- 16:41Speaker 2: to get a check today. As a matter of fact,
- 16:43Speaker 2: if you go to the website, which I did this morning,
- 16:45Speaker 2: the actual tattoo is on the website.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Correct.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So you can actually see. We had a text here
- 16:49Speaker 2: that says, do you all ever make cookbooks of all
- 16:51Speaker 2: the foods that were done at the event?
- 16:53Speaker 6: That would be incredible.
- 16:54Speaker 5: Great idea. Really, really good idea. Okay. As hard as
- 16:58Speaker 5: it is to wrangle these chefs to get together, though,
- 17:00Speaker 5: to actually get them to submit a recipe.
- 17:03Speaker 2: And some of them may not want to give up
- 17:05Speaker 2: their recipes. You know how cooks are. You know how
- 17:06Speaker 2: chefs are sometimes. They may not want to.
- 17:09Speaker 6: It's one of those things, you know, a little bit here,
- 17:11Speaker 6: a little bit there.
- 17:12Speaker 2: And that's what I like because, like I said, I'm
- 17:15Speaker 2: a big foodie. I watch all these cooking shows on TV,
- 17:17Speaker 2: and they'll say, and what is that? And other things.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 5: They don't tell you all the ingredients. They just give you, like,
- 17:24Speaker 5: an outline of the ingredients.
- 17:26Speaker 2: And spices.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And assorted spices.
- 17:29Speaker 3: All right, guys.

- 20:45Speaker 2: Beat's coverage of West Virginia State football this year. We're
- 20:47Speaker 2: adding a coach's show this year. That's going to be
- 20:50Speaker 2: at the pitch. Daniel Woods joins us to talk about it.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Good morning. Thank you.
- 20:55Speaker 2: You know, I'm still hung up on this Chef's Challenge thing, man.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Hit me. I mean, the crispy jerk marinated pork belly
- 21:04Speaker 2: is awesome.
- 21:08Speaker 3: What was the other one?
- 21:09Speaker 2: This watermelon gazpacho. It's a soup, and it's a cold soup.
- 21:14Speaker 2: But I would try it. I'd try any of these things.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I'm intrigued. You have my attention.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And then you got people like Chef Paul involved.
- 21:20Speaker 10: Right.
- 21:21Speaker 2: You got people like Chef Morgan Morrison involved.
- 21:23Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Chase Collier from Ristorante Abruzzi with that trout cake with
- 21:27Speaker 2: green tomato and bacon jam, ramp aioli, and buttermilk foam.
- 21:33Speaker 3: I'm frankly speechless.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Well, you won't be. You can go check it out
- 21:38Speaker 2: for yourself on the 15th of September at the Coliseum
- 21:42Speaker 2: Convention Center. It's a fundraiser. Covenant House. Just go to
- 21:44Speaker 2: their website for more information. Second year, Daniel, that we're
- 21:47Speaker 2: going to be covering state football. Talk about the season.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Exciting stuff going on.
- 21:53Speaker 3: This West Virginia State team's picked fourth in the Mountain
- 21:55Speaker 3: East Conference this year. All of the media day kind
- 21:59Speaker 3: of things have been coming out recently over the last
- 22:01Speaker 3: couple of weeks. The league has each day been releasing
- 22:07Speaker 3: an interview with each of the coaches in the conference
- 22:10Speaker 3: and John Pennington, the head coach at West Virginia State,
- 22:12Speaker 3: his came out on Friday, and he said he thinks
- 22:17Speaker 3: this is the most talented team he's had at West
- 22:18Speaker 3: Virginia State. He's been there for 10 years, so that's
- 22:21Speaker 3: 10 teams you're talking about, and he says this is
- 22:23Speaker 3: the most talented group that they've had. I'm very excited.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I know the folks in Institute are very excited, and
- 22:28Speaker 3: we're ready to get things started.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And you have a new color commentator for our coverage
- 22:32Speaker 2: this year, right?
- 22:32Speaker 3: That is right. Hollis Lewis, not just a member of
- 22:35Speaker 3: the House of Delegates, but also a former West Virginia
- 22:37Speaker 3: State football player, a local standout at George Washington High School.
- 22:42Speaker 3: where he was a teammate of West Virginia State's John Pennington.
- 22:45Speaker 3: So a really exciting addition to our team and our
- 22:48Speaker 3: family this year. Somebody that I think is going to
- 22:51Speaker 3: bring a lot of perspective as to what goes on
- 22:53Speaker 3: on the field, but also the West Virginia State community
- 22:56Speaker 3: as well.
- 22:57Speaker 2: And, of course, as you said, he was a standout
- 22:59Speaker 2: football player, House of Delegates member, podcast co-host along with
- 23:03Speaker 2: Carl Lee and Lisa Odey. uh, on let's talk. So, uh,
- 23:07Speaker 2: he's a true Renaissance man does a little bit. I
- 23:09Speaker 2: think he's going to add a lot to the broadcast.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I think he was broadcasts were already great, but I
- 23:12Speaker 2: think he's going to add a, add a lot more
- 23:14Speaker 2: to it. It's always good to have. And I know
- 23:16Speaker 2: you played, but I mean, it's also good to have a, uh, uh,
- 23:19Speaker 2: somebody that's actually played even at that particular institution that
- 23:23Speaker 2: can talk about.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Absolutely. It's, it's somebody that knows the ins and outs
- 23:26Speaker 3: of the program. He goes and talks to the team
- 23:30Speaker 3: all the time in his capacity as someone who's a
- 23:32Speaker 3: leader in the community and an alumnus and somebody that
- 23:36Speaker 3: understands what it means to be a West Virginia State
- 23:38Speaker 3: student athlete. So it's just a really strong addition to
- 23:43Speaker 3: what I think. We already have a tremendous product with
- 23:47Speaker 3: West Virginia State and our relationship with the university and
- 23:49Speaker 3: the athletic department. But Hollis being part of the team
- 23:52Speaker 3: is only going to make that even better. Talk about
- 23:54Speaker 3: the first game. We got Shawan on Saturday. Non-conference game.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Opponent from Conference Carolinas from Murfreesboro, North Carolina. And a
- 24:05Speaker 3: team that has a lot of new faces on the roster.
- 24:08Speaker 3: It's a noon kickoff on Saturday. Very excited. It's always...
- 24:13Speaker 3: a fun atmosphere at Lake and Rayfield at Dickerson Stadium.
- 24:17Speaker 3: We'll have coverage on the air with pregame at 1130
- 24:20Speaker 3: on 107.3 The Beat. Here locally, 107.3 The Beat, wv.com
- 24:26Speaker 3: is where you can find us streaming online. And we
- 24:29Speaker 3: will have the start of the season noon on Saturday,
- 24:31Speaker 3: toe meets leather, West Virginia State and Shawan. And the
- 24:34Speaker 3: majority of the games are on Saturday afternoons, right? I
- 24:37Speaker 3: believe every game is on a Saturday.
- 24:40Speaker 2: And most....
- 24:42Speaker 3: Games in the Mountaineers Conference will be either noon or
- 24:44Speaker 3: one o'clock kickoffs. Next week's going to be a lot
- 24:47Speaker 3: of fun because we are going up to Robert Morris
- 24:50Speaker 3: to play a Division I FCS opponent at Robert Morris
- 24:54Speaker 3: in Pittsburgh. That's going to be a six o'clock kickoff
- 24:56Speaker 3: next Saturday, but just about every game is either noon
- 24:59Speaker 3: or one o'clock this year.
- 25:00Speaker 2: And they're on 107.3 The Beat.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:02Speaker 2: What is it that you enjoy about getting, because this
- 25:04Speaker 2: was a new venture that we got into last year,
- 25:07Speaker 2: and you're the play-by-play guy. What is it that you
- 25:10Speaker 2: get out of these games? What do you enjoy about it?
- 25:11Speaker 3: Division II athletics in particular is a community. College athletics
- 25:15Speaker 3: in general is, and that's what I've always loved about
- 25:18Speaker 3: college athletics. But Division II, it's one of, to me,
- 25:23Speaker 3: the purest forms of competition because these are guys that
- 25:28Speaker 3: 99 out of 100, it's not even 9 out of 10,
- 25:31Speaker 3: 99 out of 100 are never going to make a
- 25:33Speaker 3: dollar playing football. They're going out there because it's helping
- 25:36Speaker 3: them get an education. They want to keep playing the game.
- 25:39Speaker 3: They love the game, and they want to keep doing it.
- 25:41Speaker 3: And the community rallies around that. I've said for a
- 25:44Speaker 3: couple of years now with the NIL and the revenue
- 25:46Speaker 3: sharing and the transfer portal and everything going on in
- 25:49Speaker 3: Division I college athletics, if you're kind of fed up
- 25:52Speaker 3: with what that has become, go support your local Division
- 25:55Speaker 3: II program. And I'll say that to anybody around the
- 25:59Speaker 3: state of West Virginia because the Mountain East Conference is
- 26:01Speaker 3: a lot of fun and a really competitive place to be.
- 26:03Speaker 2: And it's one of those reasons why, you know, minor
- 26:06Speaker 2: league baseball is so popular too, is because years and
- 26:09Speaker 2: years ago, not recently, but years ago, people kind of
- 26:11Speaker 2: got fed up with the high salaries and so on
- 26:13Speaker 2: and so forth. And they said, look, if I want
- 26:15Speaker 2: to go out and I want to take in a
- 26:16Speaker 2: game that's purely for the enjoyment and these guys are
- 26:19Speaker 2: out there and the, and of course the bands and
- 26:21Speaker 2: cheerleaders and everybody out there just doing it for the
- 26:24Speaker 2: love of this. They're not looking for their next step
- 26:26Speaker 2: up necessarily.
- 26:27Speaker 9: Right.
- 26:28Speaker 2: That's why minor league baseball really exploded like it did,
- 26:30Speaker 2: and that's why some of the best football, I think,
- 26:32Speaker 2: around is found on that level.
- 26:34Speaker 3: It's a lot of fun. It's exciting games. The Mountain
- 26:37Speaker 3: East in particular is a really level playing field. I mean,
- 26:41Speaker 3: almost every game you get week in and week out
- 26:44Speaker 3: is competitive. The top end of the league is really good.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Frostburg State was picked to win the conference this year
- 26:51Speaker 3: after going to the Division II quarterfinals in the NCAA tournament.
- 26:54Speaker 3: They're No. 17 in the country to start the year.
- 26:57Speaker 3: University of Charleston has hosted NCAA playoff games the last
- 27:01Speaker 3: couple of years. It's a really good league with really
- 27:04Speaker 3: good games and really good players, frankly. And if you
- 27:08Speaker 3: follow West Virginia high school football, you're going to see
- 27:09Speaker 3: a lot of the names that you've heard on Friday
- 27:11Speaker 3: nights the last couple of years out there on the field.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Talking to Daniel Woods, 25, away from Tampa, Dave Allen
- 27:16Speaker 2: Show on 580 Live, brought to you in part by
- 27:17Speaker 2: Pinnacle Consultants, helping to identify environmental concerns, asbestos, lead, mold,
- 27:22Speaker 2: and indoor quality issues in buildings all across the state.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Providing inspections, testing, and accredited lab services you can trust.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Check out PinnacleCorp.net. Helping you understand your environment because what
- 27:31Speaker 2: you don't know can hurt you. And we are adding
- 27:34Speaker 2: a coaches show. That's right.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Second season for West Virginia State football. And it's going
- 27:39Speaker 3: to be the first season that we have the John
- 27:41Speaker 3: Pennington show live on location. We did a little bit
- 27:44Speaker 3: of a studio show last year on the beat just
- 27:47Speaker 3: to kind of get our feet underneath us. Uh, but
- 27:50Speaker 3: this is the John Pennington show live on location every
- 27:53Speaker 3: Wednesday night during the season, uh, at the pitch at Shawnee. Uh,
- 27:57Speaker 3: so right by campus, uh, at West Virginia state. And
- 28:01Speaker 3: it's an hour seven to eight every Wednesday night on
- 28:03Speaker 3: the beat. I'm going to sit down with, with the
- 28:05Speaker 3: head coach of the yellow jackets, John Pennington. And we're
- 28:07Speaker 3: going to talk about the team, talk about the game
- 28:09Speaker 3: coming up. We'll have special guests throughout the season. You'll
- 28:12Speaker 3: get to know the players. You'll get to know the
- 28:13Speaker 3: other coaches. Uh, and we're just going to talk some
- 28:15Speaker 3: football every Wednesday night on the beat. And if the
- 28:18Speaker 3: football's not enough to get you to come see us
- 28:20Speaker 3: out at the pitch, it's also Wing Wednesdays at the
- 28:24Speaker 3: pitch during the show. So that's Dollar Wings and Dollar
- 28:27Speaker 3: Off Draft Beer every Wednesday night that we'll be out
- 28:30Speaker 3: there during the season. So really excited to get that
- 28:32Speaker 3: started tonight, 7 o'clock. At the pitch or tune in
- 28:36Speaker 3: on 107.3 The Beat.
- 28:37Speaker 2: And they have got some fantastic wings.
- 28:39Speaker 3: That they do.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Their food's excellent at the pitch. I've eaten there. As
- 28:42Speaker 2: a matter of fact, we were at a gathering there
- 28:44Speaker 2: just a couple of weeks ago.
- 28:45Speaker 3: That is correct.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Breaking bread or maybe breaking chicken bones, as we should say,
- 28:48Speaker 2: just a couple of weeks ago out at the pitch.
- 28:50Speaker 2: But I think it's cool. I mean, as you said,
- 28:51Speaker 2: you've done the show in the past, but there's nothing like,
- 28:53Speaker 2: and I've done similar things on other stations. There's nothing
- 28:55Speaker 2: like actually taking it out. to the public. And plus it,
- 28:58Speaker 2: it works out because there may be people in there
- 29:00Speaker 2: that are just dining or just taking in.
- 29:02Speaker 3: The great food.
- 29:03Speaker 2: They think, well, I'm going to go check out a
- 29:04Speaker 2: Western USA game. You know, I'm all, I'm all bought
- 29:06Speaker 2: in on this.
- 29:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 29:07Speaker 3: It's, it's exciting stuff. And whether you're a football novice,
- 29:13Speaker 3: who's just there to support the university, or like you said,
- 29:15Speaker 3: you're just sitting in the restaurant on wing night and
- 29:18Speaker 3: happen to happen to see what's going on or, or,
- 29:21Speaker 3: You're a diehard West Virginia State fan that's at every
- 29:24Speaker 3: game and lives and dies with the X's and O's.
- 29:26Speaker 3: I mean, this show, it appeals to everybody, and we're
- 29:30Speaker 3: really excited to.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Make it happen.
- 29:31Speaker 2: And again, all the games can be heard at 107.3
- 29:34Speaker 2: The Beat, and Coach's show will be every Wednesday night
- 29:38Speaker 2: during the season there at the pitch. and you start
- 29:39Speaker 2: at 7 o'clock, right?
- 29:40Speaker 3: 7 o'clock.
- 29:41Speaker 2: So come on out, enjoy some wings, enjoy some drinks,
- 29:43Speaker 2: or just hang out and talk a little bit of
- 29:45Speaker 2: West Virginia State football. Man, is this not the most
- 29:47Speaker 2: exciting time of the year?
- 29:48Speaker 5: It's the best.
- 29:48Speaker 2: I mean, this week or so leading up to football,
- 29:52Speaker 2: because I have been, I mean, I'm a football fanatic,
- 29:55Speaker 2: and I have been All dialed in on NFL preseason
- 29:58Speaker 2: games that I really couldn't. Cowboys are 2-0 in preseason,
- 30:01Speaker 2: by the way. There you go.
- 30:03Speaker 5: It's preseason.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Uh, but, uh, but I mean, and that, and we
- 30:06Speaker 2: were in, of course, state starts this week. We're already
- 30:08Speaker 2: getting pumped up about, about Marshall and WVU and whatever
- 30:12Speaker 2: your favorite college team happens to be.
- 30:14Speaker 3: There's a high school football game on this very station
- 30:17Speaker 3: tomorrow night.
- 30:18Speaker 2: I got it.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Tomorrow night.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:20Speaker 2: A lot of the schools are waiting or not waiting.
- 30:22Speaker 2: They're Gavin, my alma mater, but Logan Wildcats are playing
- 30:24Speaker 2: the annual battle of Logan County, the lion's club bowl
- 30:27Speaker 2: against the man. He'll be tomorrow night at, uh, at
- 30:31Speaker 2: Nesbitt Queen Stadium, which is, of course, located in Logan.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I've got the schedule. I'll get to that after the
- 30:36Speaker 2: break about the games we are going to be covering. Now,
- 30:39Speaker 2: are you going to be doing high school games as well?
- 30:42Speaker 3: I will be around our high school coverage. I will
- 30:46Speaker 3: not be broadcasting games on the air, but I will
- 30:48Speaker 3: be around the Metro News high school football coverage this fall.
- 30:51Speaker 3: is what i can say at this time it's not
- 30:53Speaker 3: like it's not like there's some kind of secret plan
- 30:55Speaker 3: uh but we're working out some of the details i
- 30:58Speaker 3: will be i will be in and around the metro
- 31:00Speaker 3: news high.
- 31:00Speaker 2: School football coverage this year but we know for a
- 31:02Speaker 2: fact that if you want to come hang out with
- 31:03Speaker 2: daniel woods the place to do it is the pitch
- 31:05Speaker 2: at seven o'clock tonight which is just right down right
- 31:07Speaker 2: down the road you know from that's right right practically
- 31:10Speaker 2: next to campus yeah west virginia state university so i'm
- 31:12Speaker 2: sure there'll be some students over there too it's great
- 31:14Speaker 2: it's a great place to have it i mean it
- 31:16Speaker 2: really really is because it's in walking distance of the
- 31:18Speaker 2: campus there'll be a lot of the Students that will
- 31:20Speaker 2: come over after class and whatever and enjoy some wings.
- 31:22Speaker 3: And if you're a student, a faculty member, a staff
- 31:25Speaker 3: member at West Virginia State, there is a West Virginia
- 31:28Speaker 3: State discount at the pitch all the time. But of course,
- 31:31Speaker 3: it applies while we're there as well. So come down,
- 31:34Speaker 3: bring your university ID with you and get a little
- 31:37Speaker 3: bit of help on the bill, too.
- 31:38Speaker 2: All right. Daniel Woods, Metro News and Sports. Appreciate you
- 31:42Speaker 2: being here. We'll talk to you Friday on the Sports Blitz.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Talk to you Friday.

- 31:54Speaker 2: You may or may not know this. Tonight is Toilet
- 31:56Speaker 2: Paper Night at GoMart Ballpark. They're teaming up with the
- 31:59Speaker 2: United Way of Central West Virginia, and this is their words.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Bring a roll of toilet paper. A new roll of
- 32:05Speaker 2: toilet paper. And I don't really think they needed to
- 32:08Speaker 2: put new in there, but okay, okay.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 32:13Speaker 2: And when you do that, it's going to go to
- 32:14Speaker 2: the United Way, and you're going to get free admission
- 32:16Speaker 2: to the game tonight against the Lancaster Stormers. So, again,
- 32:19Speaker 2: you show up with your roll of toilet paper, new,
- 32:22Speaker 2: fresh toilet paper, not used. Bring it in, and you
- 32:26Speaker 2: get into the game for free tonight over at Gilmore Ballpark.
- 32:28Speaker 3: If I bring, like, a Sam's Club 50-pack, do I
- 32:31Speaker 3: get season tickets?
- 32:33Speaker 2: Andy Shea will be on the show tomorrow. So you
- 32:35Speaker 2: can ask Andy Shea on the show tomorrow. All right. Daniel,
- 32:38Speaker 2: appreciate you being here, man. Thanks a lot. 20 minutes
- 32:40Speaker 2: away from 10. We'll take a break. Come back after

- 35:45Speaker 2: opening night for Herbert Hoover against Fairmont Senior. And we
- 35:49Speaker 2: will have that game and all the Hoover games over
- 35:51Speaker 2: on one of our other sister stations, Superstar Country 96.1 KWS.
- 35:54Speaker 2: So I can tell you, if you like football, this
- 35:57Speaker 2: is the place to be because we're going to start
- 35:59Speaker 2: it tonight with the coaches' show for Western Union State 107.3,
- 36:03Speaker 2: the beat with Daniel Woods out at the pitch in Dunbar.
- 36:07Speaker 2: And then, of course, tomorrow night we have– well, actually tonight,
- 36:11Speaker 2: I should say, here on CHS we have high school
- 36:13Speaker 2: sports line. And then we've got two games on our
- 36:15Speaker 2: schedule over the next couple days, actually more than that.
- 36:18Speaker 2: So just go out and enjoy some high school football,
- 36:21Speaker 2: college football, and all the football stuff. 9.44, coming up. Oh,
- 36:25Speaker 2: I did want to, speaking of football, want to throw
- 36:27Speaker 2: this out here. You know, tomorrow night is the annual
- 36:29Speaker 2: Paint the Capital City Green event up at the Bill
- 36:31Speaker 2: Noh Flight School for Marshall University benefiting the Big Green.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Happy to announce that it has completely sold out. It
- 36:43Speaker 2: always does. We told you to get your tickets early,
- 36:46Speaker 2: but if you didn't get your tickets, then shame on
- 36:47Speaker 2: you because the event is completely sold out. And I'll
- 36:51Speaker 2: just tell you what you're going to be missing tomorrow night.
- 36:53Speaker 2: It's a night of Marshall University, Thundering Heard, everything. Head
- 36:56Speaker 2: football coach, Tony Gibson. Head basketball coach, Corny Jackson. Women's
- 37:00Speaker 2: basketball coach, Julie Falk. Other coaches there, the AD, Gerald
- 37:03Speaker 2: Harrison is going to be there. Voice of the Thundering Heard,
- 37:06Speaker 2: Steve Cotton will be there. There's live auctions. There's just
- 37:10Speaker 2: all kinds of great things. Hope you got your tickets
- 37:13Speaker 2: because it is completely sold out. Now, there is one
- 37:15Speaker 2: little bit of bad news I need to throw in there.
- 37:17Speaker 2: The scheduled emcees for the event, myself along with Steve
- 37:21Speaker 2: Hannibal from 98.7 The Mouth and Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock,
- 37:24Speaker 2: If you've listened to Steve on the air here recently
- 37:26Speaker 2: or if you've encountered him anywhere, Steve is in quite
- 37:29Speaker 2: a bit of pain right now. He's got a major
- 37:32Speaker 2: dental issue going on to the point that his jaw
- 37:35Speaker 2: is all swollen up. And, you know, I just figured
- 37:37Speaker 2: that Jody beat him up again. But no, he he
- 37:40Speaker 2: got some major news. So he's going to bow out
- 37:42Speaker 2: tomorrow night. So I'm going to be flying that ship solo.
- 37:45Speaker 2: But with a little bit of help from Metro News
- 37:47Speaker 2: meteorologist Brian Hughes, Brian and I are going to handle
- 37:50Speaker 2: the auction. there tomorrow night. So we're looking forward to
- 37:52Speaker 2: seeing you there. Hope you got your tickets because the
- 37:54Speaker 2: event has sold out. And it's a benefit for the
- 37:58Speaker 2: Big Green tomorrow up at the Belno Flight School, just
- 38:01Speaker 2: before you get to West Virginia International Yeager Airport. Painting
- 38:04Speaker 2: the capital city green tomorrow. It is a sold out event.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Coming up later today, Metro News Midday, powered by Selangor Law.
- 38:11Speaker 2: It's Wednesday, meaning we introduce you to another wonderful West Virginian.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Andrew Donaldson is going to join me, political commentator extraordinaire. Now,
- 38:17Speaker 2: we had him scheduled on the show yesterday to talk
- 38:20Speaker 2: politics and other things in the news, but, uh, we
- 38:23Speaker 2: had him at 206 and just prior to, I mean,
- 38:27Speaker 2: Amanda had just, uh, closed out the hour when we
- 38:31Speaker 2: learned that Dolly Parton passed. So we kind of transitioned
- 38:33Speaker 2: after the news, Andrew, ever the professional that he is.
- 38:38Speaker 2: And I ended up talking about Dolly Parton, uh, during
- 38:41Speaker 2: that time. And then we brought in, uh, Tim Morris from, uh,
- 38:44Speaker 2: Chandler Limousine here in Charleston. We had the pleasure of
- 38:46Speaker 2: driving Dolly around Charleston. So that's what we did yesterday.
- 38:49Speaker 2: So I asked Andrew because he didn't get to talk
- 38:51Speaker 2: about what he wanted to talk about. He was happy
- 38:53Speaker 2: to talk about Dolly, of course, but we had some
- 38:54Speaker 2: other things in the news, including the South Carolina primary
- 38:59Speaker 2: where the sister of Lindy Graham picked up a win yesterday,
- 39:03Speaker 2: and she'll move on from there. So he's actually covering
- 39:05Speaker 2: that for other news sources. So we'll talk to Andrew
- 39:08Speaker 2: about that. Back to sports in just a moment. Each Wednesday,
- 39:12Speaker 2: During the high school football season, of course, we get
- 39:13Speaker 2: the pleasure of having the voice of high school sports
- 39:15Speaker 2: in West Virginia, Fred Persinger, to join us to preview
- 39:18Speaker 2: High School Sportsline. He'll be on the show today. And
- 39:22Speaker 2: we're going to continue talking about the passing of Dolly Parton,
- 39:25Speaker 2: including the business of Dolly. Make no mistake about it.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Dolly was a businesswoman, first and foremost. She did so
- 39:33Speaker 2: many great things for charitable causes, millions and millions and
- 39:36Speaker 2: millions of dollars. But Dolly was a pretty sharp businessperson.
- 39:42Speaker 2: I mean, she saw that from the early days of
- 39:46Speaker 2: her career. And I think that she saw how many
- 39:50Speaker 2: women and minorities for that matter. And I mean, I'll
- 39:53Speaker 2: just go and say it and talent in general, no
- 39:55Speaker 2: matter what the gender or the race or whatever, how
- 39:59Speaker 2: many of them got taken advantage of? Okay. So she said,
- 40:04Speaker 2: ain't happening to this girl from the Hills of Tennessee.
- 40:07Speaker 2: So she owned her own music, her own publishing company.
- 40:09Speaker 2: She wrote her own songs and Dolly was a business
- 40:13Speaker 2: not to even mention the product endorsements and Dollywood and
- 40:16Speaker 2: all the other things. Burke Allen, Allen Media Strategies is
- 40:19Speaker 2: going to join us to talk about the business of
- 40:22Speaker 2: Dolly Parton. Also, Open Line West Virginia, other things coming
- 40:25Speaker 2: up as well. Metro News Midday with 13 News and
- 40:27Speaker 2: tonight live anchorman to Baron and me, coming up at
- 40:30Speaker 2: noon today, powered by Salango Law. Now, on this show tomorrow,
- 40:32Speaker 2: some folks from the Dirty Birds are going to be
- 40:33Speaker 2: stopping by, including owner Andy Shea. They had that homestand
- 40:37Speaker 2: going on, including, as I mentioned, toilet paper night tonight,
- 40:40Speaker 2: benefiting the United Way. out at, uh, uh, GoMart ballpark tonight. Well, Saturday,
- 40:44Speaker 2: they're going to be celebrating the labor force in West Virginia.
- 40:47Speaker 2: So we are going to talk about that and some
- 40:50Speaker 2: other things coming up on tomorrow's show. On to, um,
- 40:53Speaker 2: on to Dolly here just for a moment. I got
- 40:55Speaker 2: several texts I want to get to. Uh, you know,
- 40:58Speaker 2: I mentioned this on the midday show yesterday. Uh, I
- 41:01Speaker 2: grew up in Southern West Virginia where, you know, country
- 41:03Speaker 2: music was a.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Part of every, everyday life.
- 41:06Speaker 2: And, uh, spent a lot of time with my grandparents, uh,
- 41:09Speaker 2: especially on weekends and, uh, my, you know, we didn't
- 41:12Speaker 2: miss he haul. I mean, that was a, that was
- 41:14Speaker 2: a go-to every Saturday night. Dolly was on that show
- 41:17Speaker 2: numerous times, but, um, you know, I got to see
- 41:20Speaker 2: Dolly's career evolve because when I'm, I'm old enough to
- 41:23Speaker 2: remember when she was with Porter Wagner and then the,
- 41:27Speaker 2: she moved away from Porter Wagner, went out on her own.
- 41:29Speaker 2: And I remember the early Well, she had a bunch
- 41:32Speaker 2: of hits on her own, but I mean in the
- 41:34Speaker 2: mid-' 70s when her career really took off, and of course
- 41:36Speaker 2: the movies from 9 to 5 to Rhinestone, Best Little
- 41:40Speaker 2: Whorehouse in Texas, all those. And then she just kept going.
- 41:47Speaker 2: And as I said yesterday on Midday, you can count
- 41:49Speaker 2: on one hand the number of artists that have been
- 41:53Speaker 2: in the limelight without ever leaving the limelight for as
- 41:56Speaker 2: long as she has. Actually, I don't know that there's
- 42:00Speaker 2: been one. when you think about it, because she broke
- 42:02Speaker 2: onto the scene in the mid to late 60s, and
- 42:04Speaker 2: she never left the public consciousness. And Dolly hadn't had,
- 42:11Speaker 2: you know, you think about all these hit records that
- 42:13Speaker 2: she had. Dolly Parton hadn't had a hit record in
- 42:15Speaker 2: 30 to 35 years or longer on the country chart. Now,
- 42:18Speaker 2: she did some things on the gospel charts, I know. And,
- 42:21Speaker 2: of course, you know, she did that album of rock
- 42:23Speaker 2: anthems and duets, and she did the Thanksgiving show, the
- 42:27Speaker 2: halftime show at Thanksgiving Game a couple of years ago.
- 42:29Speaker 2: But she was still Dolly up until really the last
- 42:32Speaker 2: couple of weeks. So, you know, lots of folks have
- 42:37Speaker 2: said things about Dolly that knew her, and I never
- 42:39Speaker 2: met her, so I'm not going to get into all that.
- 42:41Speaker 2: I'm just going to say that she was, by all
- 42:44Speaker 2: intents and purposes, and in talking to people that actually
- 42:47Speaker 2: did meet her, She was a fantastic person. She will
- 42:50Speaker 2: be missed. Texas, the pain of losing Dolly, not just
- 42:52Speaker 2: for the entertainment industry, but for this troubled world as
- 42:55Speaker 2: a whole, just as strong as Elvis was 49 years ago. Texas,
- 43:01Speaker 2: search Dolly Parton on Google. Check out this result. It's
- 43:03Speaker 2: absolutely beautiful. Yeah, I've seen several people posting that. It
- 43:06Speaker 2: is a scene seemingly from heaven with Dolly entering. And
- 43:09Speaker 2: there's Loretta Lynn and Charlie Pryde. Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings,
- 43:18Speaker 2: Johnny Cash, Elvis, all welcoming her into heaven. It is 9.51,
- 43:23Speaker 2: the Dave Allen Show on 580 Live, brought to you

- 46:30Speaker 2: Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony V. Taylor, text 304-935-500. Let me knock
- 46:36Speaker 2: out some text here. Text says, Dave, the same group
- 46:38Speaker 2: of Republicans that criticized Dolly for supporting LGBTQ and Black
- 46:43Speaker 2: Lives Matter are now acting like they cared. She never
- 46:46Speaker 2: stood for anything the Republicans stood for. She was about love,
- 46:49Speaker 2: not hate. Text says, can we get State Senator Mike
- 46:52Speaker 2: Azinger on the air and ask him why he would
- 46:54Speaker 2: post such a divisiveness on the day that Dolly died?
- 46:58Speaker 2: I saw this. And it was Michael Azinger posted a
- 47:04Speaker 2: story from NBC News with a picture of her getting vaccinated.
- 47:10Speaker 2: And the headline, and this was from back in the day,
- 47:12Speaker 2: you know, during COVID, was Dolly Parton urges people to
- 47:14Speaker 2: get COVID vaccination. And she got her first one. And yeah, Mr.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Azinger took it as an opportunity to point out that
- 47:24Speaker 2: she was pro-LGBTQ from way back. What that had to
- 47:27Speaker 2: do with the life and legacy of Dolly Parton, I
- 47:28Speaker 2: don't know. But you know what? Idiot's going to idiot.
- 47:31Speaker 2: So there you go. Text, Putnam County residents still upset
- 47:38Speaker 2: about the data centers coming in and they can't do
- 47:40Speaker 2: anything about it. I'm laughing at them. Perhaps they shouldn't
- 47:43Speaker 2: have supported and voted for the Republican agenda to strip
- 47:45Speaker 2: local control. Oh, and the voter suppression scheme that's leaving
- 47:50Speaker 2: a Republican spot in Fayette County open for the next election.
- 47:53Speaker 2: LMAO at their agenda backfiring. Text, so Lake Ontario might
- 48:00Speaker 2: get renamed Lake America. Sounds like Donald Trump is back
- 48:03Speaker 2: to rage baiting and agitation propaganda. I'm waiting for the
- 48:06Speaker 2: day Canada says enough and levies heavy tariffs on potash
- 48:10Speaker 2: to the U.S. The U.S. economy is very dependent on
- 48:14Speaker 2: global trading and very unaware of its dependence. Text, I'll
- 48:19Speaker 2: be attending the vigil for Dolly at the South Charleston
- 48:21Speaker 2: Community Center. I see what you did there. Text her,
- 48:24Speaker 2: I see what you did there. Text, one of the
- 48:29Speaker 2: smartest and most famous business moves Dolly ever made was
- 48:32Speaker 2: telling Colonel Tom Parker no on allowing Elvis to record
- 48:36Speaker 2: I Will Always Love You due to Parker's little-known demand
- 48:39Speaker 2: that Elvis receives half of every song's publishing rights. He
- 48:45Speaker 2: records she and Elvis remain friends even after that disagreement.
- 48:48Speaker 2: If you studied enough of the relationship between Tom Parker
- 48:51Speaker 2: and Elvis, perhaps Elvis didn't even know anything about it.
- 48:55Speaker 2: And I don't mean that as disrespect toward the king of.
- 48:57Speaker 3: Rock and roll.
- 48:58Speaker 2: I just mean that he was left in the dark
- 48:59Speaker 2: about a lot of the negotiations. Tech says, too bad
- 49:02Speaker 2: that Marshall plays Penn State next Saturday because it would
- 49:04Speaker 2: be fitting for Tony Gibson to attend the Pat White
- 49:06Speaker 2: jersey retirement ceremony, considering he was there and a special
- 49:10Speaker 2: group of men were coming up. Yeah, he's Tony's going
- 49:14Speaker 2: to be Coach Gibby is going to be a little
- 49:15Speaker 2: bit busy on that Saturday as the Thundering Herd will
- 49:18Speaker 2: be traveling to Penn State. Now, remember, Dave Wilson on
- 49:23Speaker 2: TalkLine said it. He called a Marshall victory in Happy Valley.
- 49:27Speaker 2: He's the one that said it. I'm Marshall to the core.
- 49:30Speaker 2: He called a victory. Stranger things have happened. I invite
- 49:33Speaker 2: you to join me every Friday morning, 9-0-6, for the
- 49:35Speaker 2: Adopt Me, Please Spend of the Week from the Kanawha-Charleston
- 49:37Speaker 2: Humane Association. It's brought to you by– Almost seven interiors, family-owned,
- 49:41Speaker 2: proudly serving the community for over 50 years, specializing in
- 49:44Speaker 2: custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery, and beautifully crafted sewn goods.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Homes to hospitals, classrooms to commercial spaces, they do it all,
- 49:51Speaker 2: located at 516 D Street in South Charleston. Story posted
- 49:55Speaker 2: this morning, WCHSnetwork.com. Some discussion last night about the proposed
- 49:59Speaker 2: data center for the community of Buffalo in Putnam County. Now,
- 50:02Speaker 2: this group called Putnam United created a resolution and presented
- 50:06Speaker 2: it to the county commission there last night, asking for
- 50:09Speaker 2: data centers to be evaluated on more than, their words,
- 50:14Speaker 2: more than the financial impacts. The meeting last night, I
- 50:17Speaker 2: understand I was not in attendance, went something like three
- 50:20Speaker 2: hours or so. It seemed very orderly, and even County
- 50:25Speaker 2: Commission President Andy Skidmore praised the citizens for the way
- 50:29Speaker 2: that they are approaching this whole thing. President Skidmore did
- 50:33Speaker 2: say the County Commission had little evidence say so over
- 50:39Speaker 2: what happens there. They're talking about HB 2014. He said,
- 50:42Speaker 2: we have very little to do with that, and told
- 50:44Speaker 2: them to go talk to their legislature. T.J. Meadows will,
- 50:48Speaker 2: of course, come up with talk line at 1006 on
- 50:51Speaker 2: this very Metro news station. I don't know if you
- 50:53Speaker 2: were there last night, but I know you saw the
- 50:56Speaker 2: coverage and read our story, wchsnetwork.com.
- 50:59Speaker 8: Look, I appreciate folks showing up, petitioning their government, making
- 51:03Speaker 8: their stance known.
- 51:04Speaker 2: And being respectful.
- 51:05Speaker 3: And being respectful.
- 51:05Speaker 2: I want to understand.
- 51:06Speaker 3: And this group did a very good job of that. Absolutely.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 51:09Speaker 8: That's the way the process should work. With that said,
- 51:12Speaker 8: the data is just not there. The impacts. We are
- 51:14Speaker 8: being driven on data centers by myths.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Myths.
- 51:19Speaker 8: Your power bill is going to go up. There's no
- 51:21Speaker 8: evidence whatsoever to suggest that power bills went up in
- 51:24Speaker 8: Loudoun County, Virginia exclusively because of data centers. There's a
- 51:27Speaker 8: lot of other reasons. This water thing. They use too
- 51:29Speaker 8: much water. What will happen with the water?
- 51:31Speaker 3: A myth.
- 51:32Speaker 5: Myth.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Disproven.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Many of these use closed-loop systems now. You're a golfer,
- 51:36Speaker 2: isn't it true that golf courses use a lot of water?
- 51:38Speaker 2: I've heard that. I don't know if it's true or
- 51:40Speaker 2: not that a golf course uses more.
- 51:42Speaker 8: But I think we're being guided largely by myths instead
- 51:45Speaker 8: of facts in this entire debate.
- 51:46Speaker 3: I'm not accusing this group of that. Right, yeah. But overall,
- 51:49Speaker 3: that's what's happening.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Meadows and Wilson coming up on TalkLine at 10.06. I'll
- 51:52Speaker 2: be back later today with Metro News Midday with 13
- 51:55Speaker 2: News and Tonight Live anchor Amanda Barron. We'll start that
- 51:57Speaker 2: at noon today, powered by Selangor Law. Coming up on
- 51:59Speaker 2: the show tomorrow, we'll talk Dirty Birds baseball and opening
- 52:01Speaker 2: night of high school football in West Virginia. See you later.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Until then, have fun and love somebody.
- 52:27Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too.
