- 0:00Speaker 1: A US military strike targeted another boat in the Caribbean yesterday,
- 0:04Speaker 1: and for the first time there are survivors. Two people
- 0:08Speaker 1: are now in US custody. According to new reporting from
- 0:10Speaker 1: NBC News, this is the sixth time the Trump administration
- 0:14Speaker 1: has targeted a boat in international waters, claiming a connection
- 0:19Speaker 1: to Venezuelan drug cartels. So far, at least twenty seven
- 0:24Speaker 1: people have died. And now the commander who has overseen
- 0:27Speaker 1: these strikes is stepping down suddenly and without explanation, head
- 0:31Speaker 1: of the US Southern Command. Here he is Admirable Admiral
- 0:35Speaker 1: Alvin Holsley will retire at the end of this year,
- 0:41Speaker 1: joining US down MSNBC Pentagon correspondent Pria Strether and former
- 0:45Speaker 1: Assistant US Attorney Sean P. Murphy. What do we know
- 0:48Speaker 1: about this resignation?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, so we know that he actually posted
- 0:54Speaker 2: on Acts just yesterday. It's been an honor to serve
- 0:57Speaker 2: our nation, the American people, in support and end the
- 1:00Speaker 2: Constitution for over thirty seven years. I'm confident that you
- 1:03Speaker 2: will forge ahead, focused on your mission that strengthens our
- 1:06Speaker 2: nation and ensure its longevity as a beacon of freedom
- 1:09Speaker 2: around the globe. Keep charging Now, this is a thirty
- 1:12Speaker 2: seven year career that's going to end on December twelfth.
- 1:14Speaker 2: As you mentioned, he's the commander of US Southern Command,
- 1:18Speaker 2: which is the area of the world where these highly
- 1:21Speaker 2: controversial strikes have been happening in the Caribbean. As you mentioned,
- 1:25Speaker 2: the sixth one was conducted just yesterday. The Trump administration
- 1:29Speaker 2: has been saying that the justification for this is self
- 1:31Speaker 2: defense because tens of thousands of Americans are dying from drugs,
- 1:35Speaker 2: and he's saying that these vessels are drug carrying vessels
- 1:39Speaker 2: which are originating from Venezuela and carrying drug cartel members. However,
- 1:45Speaker 2: many lawmakers are saying that there's no oversight, there's no transparency,
- 1:49Speaker 2: we have no insight into the intelligence gathering mechanisms that
- 1:53Speaker 2: are verifying this information. That's justifying that aspect of self defense,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and that's why some lawmakers on Capitol Hill held a
- 2:01Speaker 2: vote on the War Powers Act, which would have mandated
- 2:04Speaker 2: Congress to authorize any of these military strikes, but that
- 2:08Speaker 2: was voted down. Now, there has been some reporting from
- 2:11Speaker 2: the Washington Post in the New York Times indicating that
- 2:13Speaker 2: Admiral Halsey was opposing these strikes. And had raised concerns
- 2:18Speaker 2: to Defense Secretary Hegseth about these strikes. The chief Pentagon spokesperson,
- 2:24Speaker 2: Sean Parnell responded to that reporting on acts, posting, this
- 2:28Speaker 2: is a total lie. Never happened. There was no hesitation
- 2:31Speaker 2: or concerns about this mission, just more fake news. And
- 2:34Speaker 2: obviously this all comes as the President also made the
- 2:37Speaker 2: shocking and mission this week that he did in fact
- 2:40Speaker 2: authorize the CIA to conduct covert lethal actions inside of
- 2:45Speaker 2: Venezuela's borders, which is obviously raising the questions whether all
- 2:49Speaker 2: of this is going to escalate into an even larger
- 2:52Speaker 2: military conflict.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Sewan, I want to play what Donald Trump just said
- 2:56Speaker 1: in the White House about one of these strikes.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It was we attacked a submarine and that was a
- 3:06Speaker 3: drug carrying submarine built specifically for the transportation of massive
- 3:13Speaker 3: amounts of drugs. Just say you understand this was not
- 3:16Speaker 3: an innocent group of people. I don't know too many
- 3:18Speaker 3: people that have submarines, and that was an attack on
- 3:24Speaker 3: a drug carrying, loaded up submarine.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And these strikes legal, they're not, they're not.
- 3:32Speaker 4: There's been a lot of folks who have weighed in
- 3:35Speaker 4: on whether or not they violate international law, it's important
- 3:39Speaker 4: to note that they don't even they're not even consistent
- 3:43Speaker 4: with United States law. So we have something in the
- 3:45Speaker 4: United States Code that's called the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act.
- 3:49Speaker 4: It's specifically pursuing to the felonese clause of the Constitution,
- 3:53Speaker 4: which is addressed in Article one of the United States Constitution,
- 3:56Speaker 4: meaning it's a power of Congress, not of the President.
- 3:59Speaker 4: But nothing was followed here. And I think for someone
- 4:05Speaker 4: President Trump, who's made a political career out of saying
- 4:07Speaker 4: the quiet part out loud, he said the quiet part
- 4:10Speaker 4: out loud there at the end of that press conference
- 4:14Speaker 4: luncheon thing, where I won't repeat him a verbatim for
- 4:18Speaker 4: obvious reasons, but he said, you don't mess around with America.
- 4:23Speaker 4: And he was very proud of that line. All of
- 4:25Speaker 4: his uh bros next to him were very proud of
- 4:28Speaker 4: that line as well. But that showed his true intent
- 4:32Speaker 4: in what's going on here. He's throwing law to the wind.
- 4:36Speaker 4: He's throwing conventions to the wind, Jus ad bellum, the
- 4:41Speaker 4: rules of war, the rules of engagement. He is this
- 4:45Speaker 4: is all pretext, it's all pretense for him wanting to
- 4:51Speaker 4: engage in a massive show of force against Venezuela, and
- 4:56Speaker 4: they're he's killing people. He's murdering Pete. Maybe they're not
- 5:01Speaker 4: innocent people. He says they're not, and chances are they aren't.
- 5:06Speaker 4: But since when do we as a country, Since when
- 5:10Speaker 4: do we as Americans think that murder is okay for
- 5:15Speaker 4: being not innocent? I mean, that's that's a bit of
- 5:19Speaker 4: a problem. And if we're gonna start saying that that
- 5:24Speaker 4: this kind of drastic action, this murder of Venezuelan fishermen,
- 5:28Speaker 4: Colombian fishermen, Trinidadian fishermen, and citizens of other countries is
- 5:34Speaker 4: just okay, and that that's okay in defense of the
- 5:38Speaker 4: American families and the American well being. I can't wait
- 5:42Speaker 4: to see what Trump does when someone tells him what
- 5:45Speaker 4: the leading cause of death for American children is.
- 5:50Speaker 1: It's guns.
- 5:52Speaker 2: There.
- 5:52Speaker 1: It is great
