Johnson County, Iowa, is asking voters to approve a $94.5 million bond referendum to build a new sheriff’s office and jail—needed because the current facility is crumbling, overcrowded, and unsafe. With over two decades of strain, inmates have had to be sent elsewhere, costing taxpayers $17 million.
