- 0:59Hello and welcome back to the Arise Women of God podcast.
- 1:03I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:04Anderson, and today I'm joined by a mother, coach and educator, Lamyra Wheelwright, to answer a desperate cry heard by mothers everywhere.
- 1:15How do I stop these spiritual attacks?
- 1:17But to give you an absolute shield in the heat of battle, we are giving you a three step vital strategy today.
- 1:25First, the classroom call reset.
- 1:28Why?
- 1:29Actually yelling stop accelerates a crisis.
- 1:32And how to use quiet redirection to break the enemy's momentum.
- 1:37Second, we'll tackle the five front de escalation protocol.
- 1:41And third, the proximity defense.
- 1:43A raw real life story of a teenager having a meltdown, showing how to navigate isolation, text message warfare and late night crisis scenarios.
- 1:55But let's kick it off by looking at scripture.
- 1:57In Mark, chapter 4, verse 39, we read about when a furious tempest threatened to capsize the boat that the Savior and his disciples were on.
- 2:07Jesus didn't scream back at the wind, the text says, and he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea, peace be still.
- 2:17And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
- 2:20As mothers, we are called to bring that exact peace be still authority into our homes when our families are completely dysregulated.
- 2:30But we do it with Jesus standing beside us.
- 2:33Now Lamyra is going to share how stopping an active attack requires us to completely retrain our initial human reactions.
- 2:43And so some things that I've learned as a school teacher and I've had to learn at home is first you have to acknowledge that it's off, that something's not right.
- 2:52We call it dysregulation.
- 2:53It's not in balance.
- 2:55And the thing you gotta do first is you gotta reset the room.
- 2:58And my yelling stop is not the best way.
- 3:01But I was thinking every teacher has a classroom call.
- 3:06So an example is if you say one Two, three, eyes on me.
- 3:10And they say, one, two, eyes on you.
- 3:11Classic is give me five.
- 3:13And the kids know as you count down to five, they need to get back in their seats.
- 3:16Voices off, sitting quietly.
- 3:18Everything has it.
- 3:20I mean, in basketball is I need a timeout.
- 3:22So the coaches do a huddle.
- 3:23Marvel movies, it's Avengers Assemble.
- 3:25So, like, come up with something in a family where we need to have, like, family huddle, family freeze, timeout.
- 3:31But something that you decide on as a family.
- 3:34But the thing to remember, unless somebody's in danger, like, verbally or physically, do not yell and scream, because as we know, that just is going to rev up our limbic system and fight or flight.
- 3:46And we're going to rev.
- 3:47And so one of our great strategies is to remain calm.
- 3:52As a teacher, you always use a redirection, and it could be getting your voice really quiet like this.
- 3:57Okay, guys, I need your attention.
- 4:00Bust out into song.
- 4:02I don't know, my kids.
- 4:04You just have to find some way to switch it up.
- 4:07One of the keys I love about this idea is making a plan before everything falls apart.
- 4:14Now watch as Lamyra explains five educational strategies to help a mother navigate a battle.
- 4:21I'm going to.
- 4:22It's five to six.
- 4:23De escalation strategies.
- 4:24This is what we use in education, because sometimes in a classroom or in a home where somebody is just completely flipped, you cannot talk to them.
- 4:35So the first step is to remain calm because we've got to keep a safe space.
- 4:40As moms, as parents, this is our job.
- 4:43We had a kindergarten teacher that she would say ocean breeze, and all the kids would go, shh.
- 4:50So before you jump in there to de escalate a situation, do your own ocean breeze and go.
- 4:57And calm and go.
- 4:59We're going to use a lower voice.
- 5:01We're going to speak slowly because it's a little more soothing.
- 5:04Take a step back.
- 5:05Hey, I'm here.
- 5:06Let me help you.
- 5:07Because you want them to come down and match your tone.
- 5:10If you have a hard time remaining calm, pray right now and tell God you need help with this and to remind you to turn to him in a moment of crisis.
- 5:20Then when you are in that moment, say a fervent prayer to God for help to cast out the darkness and bring in light, calling on angelic help.
- 5:29Okay?
- 5:29The second thing is change the setting.
- 5:31You need to move them.
- 5:32Like, if they.
- 5:33If they really are fighting or they're on their phone and something's happening on the phone, you got to take that away.
- 5:38Or go to a safe space.
- 5:41Where they can calm down.
- 5:43Maybe it's their room.
- 5:44Maybe you have a place in your house.
- 5:45Like, we have our music room.
- 5:47It's got a comfy couch and they can go and sit there sometimes.
- 5:50It's my room.
- 5:51Go sit on my couch in my room.
- 5:52So you got to change it up.
- 5:53Okay.
- 5:54The third one is you got to respect their space.
- 5:56So you're not going to reach in and touch and grab them, but you are going to stay near.
- 6:00So if they go into their room and they're there, you say, hey, I'm here when you're ready.
- 6:05You're not marching out the house.
- 6:06You're not leaving.
- 6:07I'm so done.
- 6:08You are in proximity.
- 6:10They need to know that you are still on their team.
- 6:13It's not mom against kid.
- 6:15It's mom with kid.
- 6:16The fourth thing is you're going to listen.
- 6:18You're going to do a lot of listening and validating.
- 6:22This is not the time to criticize them, what they're doing, what they did wrong.
- 6:26You're not going to give them a punishment.
- 6:28You're not going to parent.
- 6:29You're not going to shame them.
- 6:30You're just going to listen.
- 6:31I understand you feel angry.
- 6:33Tell me about that and let them tell you about it.
- 6:35And you say, wow, thanks for sharing that with me.
- 6:38But don't say, wow, you could have said something different.
- 6:41Are you sure that was everything?
- 6:42Like, sometimes I'll say, well, what happened before that?
- 6:45Because I want them to take accountability, but really I'm listening because they're processing their emotion.
- 6:51And then the fifth one is, I empathize with them.
- 6:53And that's where I said, I validate.
- 6:55Wow, that's hard.
- 6:57And then as they get calm and you've helped them de escalate from being, like, exploding.
- 7:02So, okay, I'm coming down.
- 7:03I'm calming down.
- 7:04Then we strategize what we're going to do next, and then I'm going to include and then seek God in all of that, and he will help you know what to say and what to do.
- 7:15These five steps are a masterclass in crisis management.
- 7:20Listen as Lamyra shares a raw, moving personal story of stepping out into a street to rescue her own teenager from a sudden, heavy, spiritual ambush.
- 7:31This recently happened to me as a mom.
- 7:33I suddenly hear one of my kids outside yelling.
- 7:37So I go out there, and here's my teenager running and crying and screaming.
- 7:43I'm not good enough.
- 7:44I don't deserve parents like you.
- 7:46I should just go to a mental hospital.
- 7:48Okay, so I'm Going back to learning about how I recognize spiritual warfare for me.
- 7:53And I'm like, okay, we've got a lot of shaming going on.
- 7:55My first reaction to mom is like, we're in the middle of the street, and you're in front of our neighbor's house.
- 8:01Stop.
- 8:01I'm so embarrassed.
- 8:02And I wanted to say, just stay calm, Stay calm, stay calm.
- 8:05Stop it.
- 8:05Let's go inside.
- 8:06Let's go inside.
- 8:07But what I do.
- 8:08Okay, I'm here.
- 8:10I'm here.
- 8:10What's going on?
- 8:11Okay, let's get.
- 8:12Let's get inside.
- 8:13You're safe.
- 8:13I love you.
- 8:14Me.
- 8:15Can you come with me?
- 8:16And I realized right away that the issue was something that happened on their phone, because that was the only thing they had.
- 8:21And they're using phrases that I have not heard them use.
- 8:23And I said, okay, where's your phone?
- 8:25It's over there in the grass somewhere.
- 8:27And I'm like, okay, let's get you inside.
- 8:28The kid goes in, and they barricade themselves in my office.
- 8:31And immediately I'm in my room going through the phone, figuring out what's happened.
- 8:36But I realize I'm nervous because this kid has isolated themselves.
- 8:40So after a minute or two, I'm like, okay, I'm here for you.
- 8:44And then I hear them leave, and I'm like, wait, where'd they go?
- 8:46They went upstairs to the room.
- 8:47And I went up to the room, and I follow them, and they had crawled in bed.
- 8:52I said, can I come in and sit by you?
- 8:53And at first they're like, no, I don't want your mom.
- 8:55I'm just going to go to bed.
- 8:56And I said, no, I'm here for you.
- 8:57We need to talk about this.
- 8:58And I had gone through and already evaluated what had happened.
- 9:02And then I let them talk.
- 9:03But I also said, wow, it sure seems like you felt misunderstood.
- 9:08And then they started to tell me what they felt, and I just listened.
- 9:12I said, wow, I know what that's like.
- 9:13That's so hard.
- 9:14I'm so sorry that that's happened to you.
- 9:16And after a little bit, they were able to sit up.
- 9:19I was able to hug them, tell them how much I love them, and that we're going to work through this.
- 9:23And we talked, and I said, okay, we're going to take the phone away for a little while because I think this was so traumatic for you.
- 9:33We need to have a few days break from it.
- 9:35And it's not because you're in trouble.
- 9:36It's for your protection.
- 9:38So we strategized that.
- 9:40And here's the amazing thing, is that in a couple, two to three days, I, I could give the phone back.
- 9:46But I had gone through the phone.
- 9:47I had done some safeguarding.
- 9:49Lioness at the gates.
- 9:50Protecting my kiddo at first, until we made sure that they were safe mentally, emotionally, spiritually.
- 9:57The other amazing thing that happened is later that evening when it's time for bed and all of the scaries start coming into our minds because we're reliving, rehashing the emotions, I was able to ask my kiddo, I said,
- 10:08hey, would you like us to say a prayer with you?
- 10:11And they said, yes.
- 10:12And my husband said the prayer.
- 10:14And my kiddo immediately goes, you know, when, when dad said this specific phrase, I felt peace.
- 10:20I felt the anxiety go away.
- 10:22So we, we include God in that de escalation.
- 10:25We do all of this.
- 10:26And you need to know, while I am doing all of that stuff in real time with this kid, I'm literally praying the entire time, okay, help me, help me, help me.
- 10:34What do I say?
- 10:34What do I do?
- 10:35But my job was to get in there and to get Satan out of my kid's head.
- 10:40Nope.
- 10:40We're stopping that.
- 10:42So, my friend, the next time a storm hits your living room, remember you do not have to match the chaos to conquer it.
