- 5:28It's 605 at KCBS.
- 5:31Now, ladies and gentlemen, it is a great pleasure once again to share the mutual microphones
- 5:38with my broadcasting partner of many Monday night NFL football games
- 5:43and a football voice that's known across the land, the genial gentleman from Knoxville, Tennessee,
- 5:48America's number one football voice, Mr. Lindsay Nelson.
- 5:52Thank you very much, Al Wester.
- 5:54Hello again, everybody.
- 5:55In just a moment, we'll have the toss of the coin.
- 5:57Freddie Wyatt is the referee and his crew will be coming out to the center of the field.
- 6:01We'll have the toss of the coin.
- 6:02It is natural turf here at Tampa Stadium, and just now Tony Lenhardt is down there practicing a few kickoffs.
- 6:09Of course, these are all-stars selected to participate here on a team game,
- 6:13and some concessions must be made to that fact in arranging the rules by which this game is played.
- 6:19The game is played under regulation NFL rules with the following exceptions.
- 6:23A standard 4-3-4 defense must be employed.
- 6:26Pass coverage may only be a man-for-man with a free safety.
- 6:29Bump and run is considered a technique of man-to-man.
- 6:32Will be permissible as allowed by the rules.
- 6:34A three-deep zone with a strong side rotation for the cornerback only is permissible,
- 6:38but the middle linebacker must go weak.
- 6:40There's no blitzing at any time except on third down in short yardage, that's three yards or less,
- 6:45and then by the outside linebackers.
- 6:47So those are the rules under which this game will be played.
- 6:50If the score is tied at the end of the regulation play,
- 6:52the team scoring first during overtime play will be the winner.
- 6:56The game is automatically ended upon any score, including a safety.
- 6:59Now Freddie Wyatt is bringing the captains out to the center of the field.
- 7:02The umpire is Tom Hensley. The headlinesman is Gil Mays.
- 7:05Line judge is Jack Johnson. The back judge is Ben Tompkins.
- 7:08The field judge is Bill Stanley.
- 7:10The alternate assigned here is Don Wedge.
- 7:13The commissioner of the National Football League is here, Pete Rosell,
- 7:16located just down the line from our mutual broadcast position here.
- 7:21The captains are being introduced to the official squad now.
- 7:28For the NFC, Tom Mack and Ken Houston.
- 7:35There is the toss as the coin hits the turf.
- 7:40And we'll get the indication in just a moment.
- 7:42The NFC has won the toss and elected to receive.
- 7:46So the National Football Conference will receive.
- 7:50The American Football Conference will be kicking off as we get underway with the Pro Bowl from here in Tampa.
- 7:56Next year the Pro Bowl will be played in Los Angeles.
- 7:58And the following year it will be played in Hawaii.
- 8:01As a matter of fact, our Mr. Al West is going to go out two years early and scout it in the week or so.
- 8:05I was just thinking about that, Lindsay. You know, I'll be out there as mutual.
- 8:09We'll bring over many of these stations.
- 8:11The Hawaiian Open Golf Championship in about two weeks.
- 8:14And of course next weekend I'll be, or this weekend as a matter of fact, on Saturday I'll be going out.
- 8:19And now the American Football Conference is coming onto the field to align themselves to kick off.
- 8:24And Tony Lenhardt will be doing the booting. He is from the Baltimore Coast.
- 8:28From Austria Tech he is a sidewinder.
- 8:32And the National Football Conference gathered around Chuck Knox.
- 8:36Chuck Knox of course will be head coach and general manager of the Buffalo Bills next year.
- 8:41So this is his final association for the time being, at least with the National Football Conference.
- 8:47And the game here at Tampa State. The ball is being teed up on the 35 yard line.
- 8:53Ed Brown is dropping back deep for the National Football Conference, a premier kick returner.
- 9:04Now the AFC is breaking the huddle. Lenhardt again checks the ball on the tee.
- 9:08Walter Payton has dropped back there along with Eddie Brown.
- 9:11It's Walter Payton and Eddie Brown deep to receive the kickoff.
- 9:16Lenhardt retreats now.
- 9:18And we are awaiting the whistle of referee Fred Wyatt to get the Pro Bowl game underway on Tampa Party.
- 9:23Here comes Lenhardt.
- 9:25Sidewinder puts it up.
- 9:27And it is Eddie Brown taking it up the two. He's up to the five, cuts right to the ten.
- 9:31To the 15, turns upfield to the 20, to the 25.
- 9:34Eddie Brown to the 30 and across to the 32 yard line.
- 9:37So it's going to be first down and 10 yards to go.
- 9:39Back it was made by Tony Green coming up to make the stop.
- 9:43So now it is at the 32 yard line, first down and 10 yards to go.
- 9:47Let's see if the Lazy Boy Chair Company will award a famous Lazy Boy recliner to tonight's outstanding offensive and defensive players.
- 9:54And our judges, Tom McEwen of the Tampa Tribune, Cameron Snide of the Baltimore Sun, and Larry Fox of the New York Daily News.
- 10:00We'll be announcing the winners at the conclusion of tonight's game.
- 10:03At Hayden's the quarterback, Lawrence McCutcheon and Walter Payton are the setbacks.
- 10:06For the NFC, they're clad in blue here with white jerseys and that is McCutcheon going right, turns over tackle and moves across the 37 yard line.
- 10:14Lawrence McCutcheon who rushed for 1,238 yards during the regular season, averaged 4.2 and he picked up about 5 on the play.
- 10:22So it'll be second down and 5 yards to go.
- 10:24One of the key blocks in that play to the outside, Walter Payton the running back, he works at trying to block too and he blocked Jack Ham out.
- 10:31Ham on the strong side as a linebacker came across and Payton managed to hold him up long enough to break the runner.
- 10:37Sammy White and Drew Pearson the wide receivers, Billy Joe Dupree is the tight end for the NFC.
- 10:44Running backs are aligned even with each other and now hitting in there is Walter Payton.
- 10:47He was of a right guard and gets just short of the 39 yard line.
- 10:50Walter Payton carrying on the play and so it is going to be a third down situation here.
- 11:00Lyle Alzado came in to make the tackle.
- 11:03Alzado from the Denver Broncos, the AFC, clad here in white jerseys with red pants.
- 11:11It is third down and three yards to go with them all up there at the 39 yard line.
- 11:15There is no score in the first quarter. The game has just begun.
- 11:18Wide receivers left and right for Pat Hayden, the quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams.
- 11:22Hayden drops back to set, moves up, decides he'll run the football, goes to the right to the 40.
- 11:27He is heading for the 60, got the first down out of bounds as he moved it up to the 43 yard line.
- 11:32Pat Hayden started here tonight because Roger Staubach, who was voted to that position, had a busted finger
- 11:37and the Super Bowls could not start so Hayden was moved up and Jim Hart will back him up its first and 10.
- 11:42The linebackers were moving in on that play and Lamar Parrish was driven back deep as Drew Pearson went deep on the play.
- 11:49Parrish came up as rapidly as possible to try and stop the run but Hayden had just beaten it.
- 11:55He had just made the first down as Parrish came up to cover.
- 11:59So it is the first, first down of the night, first and 10 at the 43 yard line.
- 12:03Running backs are well split for Pat Hayden, the quarterback.
- 12:07Going to a high count. Now drops, throws it out into the right flat.
- 12:11It's completed out there in advance to the 50 yard line.
- 12:15Setly turned and spotted it out there in the right flat.
- 12:20Jack Ham coming up to make the tackle on Sammy White and so it is at the 50 brought into the inbound marker
- 12:26and spotted just across the 50 yard line where it will be second down and three yards to go.
- 12:30That was a matter of Ron Urie not being able to handle the linebacker.
- 12:33The right tackle, offensive right tackle of the NFC was on Jack Ham one on one.
- 12:38He just couldn't hold him. Ham broke the block and went and made the tackle.
- 12:41Again Sammy White goes to the right side and Drew Pearson comes to the left side.
- 12:45The running backs are evened up.
- 12:48Hayden has the football now and trying to the left side.
- 12:51It is being chaired by McCutchen and he gets across the 45 yard line
- 12:56and gets it up before John Dutton brought him down at about the 44 yard line.
- 13:02It's going to be a first and 10, the second first down in this drive.
- 13:06First down 10 yards to go for the National Football Conference.
- 13:10Well they started back at the 32 yard line. They moved it up to the midfield stripe
- 13:15and now they've got it down to the 44 yard line.
- 13:18The NFC is the NFC begins to grind it out.
- 13:22Here they come now out of the huddle enough to the line.
- 13:26Pat Hayden and this is his 25th birthday.
- 13:29Incidentally Pat Hayden celebrating his birthday.
- 13:31Here is a pitch to the right side.
- 13:33And nothing on this one as McCutchen was filed up back at about the 46 yard line.
- 13:38Mike Barnes coming over to make the tackle.
- 13:41Barnes pulled him down for a loss of two yards on the play so it will be second and 12 at the 46.
- 13:46Barnes just caught him standing straight up moving across this big man,
- 13:50256 pounds, 6 foot 6 of the Colts.
- 13:53He just blasted him down.
- 13:54For Mike Barnes this is his first Pro Bowl and he told me earlier in the week
- 13:58it was a great thrill to be able to play in it.
- 14:01Slowly they come up to the line once again now.
- 14:03Sammy White to the left side, Drew Pearson to the right side.
- 14:06The running backs are split for Pat Hayden.
- 14:08Pat Hayden soon will be back at the books at Oxford University.
- 14:11He's a Rhodes Scholar.
- 14:12Set up, chased out of the pocket shortly.
- 14:14And it's incomplete. Trying to hit Drew Pearson but it is batted incomplete.
- 14:19It was Billy Thompson who moved in front.
- 14:22Got a hand on it to deflect it.
- 14:23It's going to be third down at 12 yards to go at the 46 yard line.
- 14:26Billy Thompson, the great strong safety there of the Denver Broncos.
- 14:30He had five interceptions on the year.
- 14:32They picked him as an All-Pro this year for great defensive work.
- 14:35Against the run and against the pass and he almost stole that one away from Drew Pearson.
- 14:40So it will be third down and 12 yards to go.
- 14:42There is no score. 11 minutes 26 seconds remain to be played in the first quarter of the Pro Bowl here at Tampa Stadium.
- 14:49Running backs are even up with wide receivers left and right for Pat Hayden.
- 14:53Hayden dropping straight back now.
- 14:55Sets skids a little bit and it hits just as he turned the ball. It's incomplete.
- 14:59He was hit just as he started that arm forward.
- 15:01The punting energy is coming on now.
- 15:03It was John Dutton who got in there and hit him just as he started the arm part.
- 15:07An incompletion as the ball did not reach the intended receiver and it's going to be fourth down.
- 15:12The punting energy is in on the punter.
- 15:14John James, who averaged 41.1, tied the NFL record for punts in the season, 105 with the Atlanta Falcons.
- 15:25Mike Haynes has dropped back there along with Billy White's shoes.
- 15:28Billy White's shoes, Johnson has dropped back.
- 15:31He led the NFL in punt returns, had three for touchdowns.
- 15:34Billy White's shoes did. James gets the snap now.
- 15:37Puts the ball up over to the left side and he'll let it hit.
- 15:42It's going into the end zone for a touchback.
- 15:43It'll be put in play first and then into 20 with a score of the NFC nothing, the AFC nothing.
- 15:48There's a timeout on the field.
- 15:49Now this is for the Teamsters and GM trucks.
- 15:51Are you getting your money's worth these days?
- 15:54If the answer is no, consider what you're missing if you do not belong to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
- 16:00Best wages guaranteed, no cost pension, health and welfare protection.
- 16:05That and much more add up to real family security.
- 16:09You can't get more for your money than the Teamsters do.
- 16:12Now you know why. They're the nation's largest labor union.
- 16:16Teamsters, 2.3 million families strong and growing.
- 16:21Seems like whenever a guy buys a new pickup, he right away tries to get everyone else into one.
- 16:27Well, not me.
- 16:28I'm not going to tell you about how great my GMC is or how much fun or comfortable.
- 16:33Nope, not me.
- 16:35I'm not going to tell you about its smooth ride either or all the fancy available equipment I got.
- 16:40Cruise control, air, stereo.
- 16:42GMC's two-tone paint.
- 16:44Why, I'm not even going to tell you.
- 16:45GMC goes sucking like a cruise.
- 16:49GMC goes sucking like a cruise.
- 16:54Al Wester, Lindsay Nelson, Luke Griffin, our mutual crew here from Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
- 17:01We're about four minutes into the first quarter of the Pro Bowl battle between the NFC and the AFC.
- 17:06And the first time tonight offensively the AFC has the ball.
- 17:10A 46-yard punt into the end zone by James gives it to them first.
- 17:13Instead of the 20, Bob Greasy brings them up.
- 17:15Franco Harrison, Lydell Mitchell are in that backfield.
- 17:18Franco Harrison, Lydell Mitchell with teammates at Penn State.
- 17:22Bob Greasy of Miami rolling back, goes out to the right flat.
- 17:25Taken out there by Nat Moore, his favorite receiver.
- 17:28Nat Moore advances to the 23-yard line, right into the right flat.
- 17:32And so they open up with a Bob Greasy turn.
- 17:34Nat Moore fast play.
- 17:36Brad Van Pelt made the tackle.
- 17:38Roland Lawrence was up there to help on it.
- 17:40Roland coming, of course, from the left side cornerback.
- 17:43But Brad Van Pelt, the great linebacker of the New York Giants, has everything going for him in size, speed.
- 17:49He's just the ideal temperamental linebacker, just mean and nasty.
- 17:54Second down, seven yards to go, and the ball is at the 23-yard line.
- 17:57Greasy has his running back split.
- 17:59Lydell Mitchell, Franco Harris gives it to Lydell Mitchell.
- 18:03He tries the middle, gets just across the 25-yard line, just an inch or so across.
- 18:07Picked up two yards on the play.
- 18:08It's going to be third down and five yards to go.
- 18:10And Harvey Martin was in to make the tackle.
- 18:13Harvey Martin from the Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys.
- 18:18Here's a big boy, a big lad who is just about the best thing in football.
- 18:22They have named him the best defensive football player in the National League this year.
- 18:26And if you watch him play, you can't miss seeing the credentials.
- 18:29Russ Francis is in that tight end now.
- 18:31Dave Kass was out, Kenny Burrows in a wide receiver to the right side.
- 18:34Bob Greasy waiting for the snap.
- 18:36Running backs are evened up.
- 18:38Contact made before the snap.
- 18:39Penalty markers are thrown.
- 18:40A whistle stops play.
- 18:42So Greasy, who had dropped back, comes to a halt.
- 18:45Russ Francis.
- 18:47Francis had made the jump.
- 18:49He made the jump off first, Lindsay, and it's going to cost him five yards for moving there.
- 18:54It'll load the ball back to the 20-yard line.
- 18:57Against the AFC, there is no score.
- 19:01On the message board, the Bay Area welcomes Pete Rozell, the commissioner of the National Football League.
- 19:06Pete Rozell and the owners, of course, have been in conclave for the last couple of days in this area.
- 19:12Just before the game, we had Gil Brandt visitors here.
- 19:15He is the great personnel director of the world champion Dallas Cowboys and one of the key men responsible.
- 19:21Ian Texram and, of course, their great coach work as a trio of evaluating talent and putting together a championship team.
- 19:31Wide receivers left and right on the third and ten for Greasy.
- 19:34And he pumps it over the middle and it is intercepted at the 38-yard line.
- 19:38Deflected and intercepted and the NFC gets it at the 38.
- 19:42And Cliff Harris picked it up. Cliff Harris of the Dallas Cowboys, first and ten for the NFC at the AFC 38.
- 19:49And, Lindsay, I've got to nominate that as the possibility of being our first pencil key player of the night.
- 19:55We've just got to make it a nomination now.
- 19:58Remember, we're looking for the key player, the key player of this football game.
- 20:02And you've just got to say that might be it.
- 20:05First turn over the night, so now the blue flag. NFC comes up first and ten.
- 20:09Right up there by Pat Hayden. The general plan is for Hayden to play the first and third quarters, heart the second and fourth quarters.
- 20:16That plan can be deviated from, however. Now, dropping back, Hayden throws over the middle and it is taken at the 22-yard line.
- 20:23They completed that. The Drew Pearson went high and he pulled it down with it immediately.
- 20:28First and ten for the NFC. Tom Casanova leads the tackle.
- 20:32He from LSU and the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 20:36What a circus catch Drew Pearson just made. He's only six feet, weighs 183 pounds,
- 20:41caught 48 passes this year for 870 yards and all-pro if ever there was one.
- 20:47First down, ten yards to go, the ball is outside the 22-yard line. Wide receivers left and right, the running backs are well split now for Pat Hayden.
- 20:54Waiting for the snap. There is no score in the ball game. We're in the first quarter.
- 20:58Hand it off to Walter Payton. Payton tries. Over left card gets up to the 20-yard line.
- 21:01It's landing in. He picked up about two, maybe three. Mike Barnes in to make the tackle.
- 21:06Mike Barnes just recovered quickly instead of breaking straight across.
- 21:10Instead of putting the pressure on the quarterback, Barnes made the hesitation.
- 21:14Read the play and then came after. Chuck Knox on the sidelines. I wonder right now what's going through his head.
- 21:19Can he get that ball in? Can he get a touchdown?
- 21:22Second down and eight yards to go and the NFC has the ball at the AFC 20-yard line.
- 21:27Payton handing it off this time to McCutchen. McCutchen tries the right side but can't go and he stops at the 21, a loss of a yard.
- 21:33On the play, Jack Hammond to make the tackle. It's going to be third down and nine yards to go.
- 21:37Well, McCutchen had nowhere to go but right into the arms of Hamm because Hamm wasn't fooled a bit by that sweep to the right.
- 21:43A quick sweep out there by McCutchen and McCutchen has great speed.
- 21:47He's played in five of these Pro Bowls so you know he's got the credentials of being a real All-Star.
- 21:52But he loses a yard, I believe, Lindsay.
- 21:54He does. It's third down and nine yards to go. Wide receivers again left and right. They even up the running backs.
- 22:00Had Hayden on a third and nine.
- 22:04Waiting for the snap. Dropping back. Sets up and looks. Has time. Pumps it over the middle and it is incomplete at the five-yard line.
- 22:12Incomplete to Drew Pearson on a crossing pattern.
- 22:15At the five and Pearson is slowly getting up. It was Randy Gratishaw who was in there to make the stop on him.
- 22:22So it's going to be fourth down now. The ball is funded at the 21-yard line where it's fourth and nine.
- 22:28That's one of those wild moments when the ball, the receiver, and the defender, and that was a deep drop by middle linebacker Randy Gratishaw, reached the same apex at the same time.
- 22:38Oh, did Gratishaw hit Pearson. He spread him out.
- 22:42Herrera is going to try now a 39-yard here. Herrera, a friend Herrera with Charlie Waters holding will attempt the field goal.
- 22:49Hands off, such waters puts it down. Herrera boots it up and this one is no good. Wide to the right. No good. It will go over at the line of scrimmage with the score.
- 22:58AFC nothing, NFC nothing. There's a timeout on the field. Now this for Buick Automobiles.
- 23:04The 1978 Buick's. Cars designed to make a whole lot of sense.
- 23:10But along with the innovation and logic, there's all the comfort and luxury people have always loved about Buick.
- 23:17From the Skyhawk and the amazing new Century and Regal, right up through the trim, live, full-size Buick.
- 23:27It's the kind of science that gives you the wizardry of smooth, even-firing V6 engines.
- 23:33Cars that are trim but roomy. And the kind of magic that makes driving them fun.
- 23:39The 1978 Buick's. See them soon at your Buick dealer.
- 23:44They surely will have found you. The amazing things you see.
- 23:50The cars they've built are wonderful. I can't touch these things.
- 23:56U-League Automobiles are equipped with GM build engines produced by various divisions. See your dealer for details.
- 24:04Everin Harara with a 39-yard field goal attempt at wet or stray. It was wide to the right and in the wind tonight. You couldn't second-guess him on that.
- 24:157.51 remaining in the first quarter. No score. Here comes the AFC at the 20-yard line. Up to the line of scrimmage. And once again, here's Lindsay Nelson.
- 24:23All right, Al West, here's at the 21. And Bob Greasy is still quarterbacking.
- 24:27The white and red-clad AFC is waiting for the snap of his running back seamen.
- 24:31He's dropping straight back to put it up into the air. I'll say that it's completed.
- 24:36And it is at the 24-yard line. There was Lydell Mitchell who took it actually up to the 26 to try to circle back. So the line of scrimmage will be the 24 again in three seconds and seven.
- 24:46Greasy lost about three yards trying to circle back and get some running room there. And the one thing you don't want to let Lydell Mitchell do is get some running room.
- 24:53And here's the fellow who has great hands. He led the National Football Conference this year with 71 pass catches.
- 25:00But only that he rushed for 1,159 yards. A great season for Lydell Mitchell.
- 25:05He and Franco Harris teamed up and dropping back now. Here's Greasy.
- 25:09Up system to the right side. Incomplete. Didn't get it to his receiver. So it's an incompletion.
- 25:14He was trying to get it to Nath Moore who was down on his knees, but it hit a couple of yards in front.
- 25:19It'll be third down and seven at the 24. Rollin' large. Came in to make the tackle.
- 25:23He was up there, but the ball was just absolutely too short. There wasn't any real pressure on Greasy there.
- 25:28That ball just must have slipped in his hands because he threw it into the ground about three, four yards in front of the receiver who was down on his knees trying to dig it up.
- 25:36Monty Jackson was to have started. Monty Jackson, the Rams, on the left corner, but he is out with an injury.
- 25:41And so Rollin' large moved up and Allen Ellis of the Chicago Bears was added to the squad.
- 25:46Now Greasy again dropping back. Takes a look. Steps up and he goes long. Up the middle. And it is gathered in by Russ Francis.
- 25:54Francis has got it. It's a 32-yard line. It's first and 10.
- 25:59Torley Waters made the tackle. Russ Francis with the catch. The pass from Bob Greasy. First down and 10 yards to go.
- 26:07The big youngster from Honolulu, Hawaii, and that's his home. He went and played his college ball in Oregon.
- 26:13He is now in his third year. Just completed his third year with the New England Patriots.
- 26:17Russ Francis, 6'6", 240 pounds. What great speed he had. He got behind Charlie Waters.
- 26:24Ball is mounted at the 34-yard line. For his first and 10, Kenny Byer goes to the left side.
- 26:28A 42-yard pass led. Out of an eye formation this time.
- 26:32And it is Lydell Mitchell to the 30-yard line. He picked up four yards on the play. So it will be second down and six at the 30-yard line.
- 26:39Isaiah Robertson coming in to make the tackle. So far, Coach Ted Marchavrota of the AFC has been substituting freely.
- 26:46Chuck Knox of the NFC has stayed with the same unit to start the ballgame for the most part.
- 26:50Six minutes, six seconds remaining to be played in the first quarter. Kenny Byer going wide to the left side now.
- 26:56As Bob Greasy of Miami and Purdue brings them up. Still got Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris in there at the setbacks.
- 27:02Mitchell is left and Harris is right in this set.
- 27:04Topping back is Greasy. Takes a look. Pumps this one and it is complete.
- 27:09It is taken by Nat Moore, his favorite receiver at the 16-yard line.
- 27:14Charlie Waters made the tackle. He's from Clemson and the Dallas Cowboys.
- 27:19Lawrence was there with him. Lawrence came over to help Waters on that. But that was a very, very quick turn in there.
- 27:25Nat Moore right over the middle. He was looking for it. I don't think Greasy took more than a three count on that and then rifled the football.
- 27:32No pressure on him. But it was just one of those quick ones where he found some daylight in the seam and he popped the ball in there to Moore.
- 27:38First down and ten yards to go. The AFC at the NFC 16-yard line. There is no score in the ballgame.
- 27:44Wide receivers left and right for Bob Greasy. Gives this one to Franco Harris. He tries the left side. Takes a rake and gets inside.
- 27:51Fifteen goes down to the 11-yard line. Franco Harris picked up five yards on the play to make it second down and five yards to go.
- 27:58Isaiah Robertson again coming in to make the tackle along with Harvey Martin.
- 28:04So the AFC is driving. Martin is the one to watch. This big fella can put tremendous pressure on you.
- 28:11He had over 20 sacks this year, 23 I believe, in the regular season with the Dallas Cowboys.
- 28:18He was one of the keys to the great defensive action of the Cowboys, even to the Super Bowl game.
- 28:23Again the AFC comes up to the line. Second down and five. They held the ball just outside the 11-yard line.
- 28:29Bob Greasy has the football. They try a running draw and it is taken by Lido Michillin.
- 28:34He gets down just outside the six-yard line before Isaiah Robertson comes in to make the tackle.
- 28:40On a draw play. Moved it just outside the sixth. Bill Berge also in there on the tackle.
- 28:46Berge and Robertson right there on the tackle, but can you believe it? Going right up the middle inside of the 20-yard line on the draw.
- 28:53They caught the AFC napping just for a moment. Robertson had to compensate very quickly for it now.
- 28:59And they've got a third down and short yardage. You could expect I guess the AFC to do a little blitzing right here, couldn't you?
- 29:06They can blitz on third and short. It's third and one at the seven-yard line.
- 29:10Running backs are closely aligned. Close alignment. And it is taken over to the right side by Lido Michillin.
- 29:16He is fouled up at the six-yard line. Penalty marker on the play. There is a penalty marker to be checked out.
- 29:21Randy White was in there on the tackle. Offside is the preliminary signal and it's against the NFC, which will make it a first down and goal to go.
- 29:29It'll be a first and goal on the offside as the AFC moves ever closer to the NFC goal line with three minutes 44 seconds remaining to be played in the first quarter.
- 29:41Lindsay, as I said earlier in the pregame show, when you take a look at the lineup, the offensive alignment for this football team from the AFC, you've just got to believe that they are the favorites.
- 29:53They've got all pros. Actually at the front line they have five all pros. In the backfield they have three all pros.
- 30:00That's a total of eight all-pro football players out of 11 starters offensive.
- 30:06First down and goal to go inside the four-yard line. Tight alignment now. Wide receiver to the right side only.
- 30:12Franco Harris, Lido Michillin for Bob Greasy. Here's Franco Harris trying the left side but he can't go. He's fouled out for a loss on the play.
- 30:19Roger Whirly from the St. Louis Cardinals and Missouri came in to make the tackle.
- 30:25Looked a great deal like Larry Wilson, didn't he? But he came across there and then all of a sudden the runner is facing the fact that there's nobody to block for him.
- 30:32He's got to go right into his arms. And Whirly, with maybe a little more speed than Larry Wilson, who is going to be inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame this year,
- 30:41and who will be one of the five members inducted and all five will be on our halftime show, so don't miss it.
- 30:46Well, he looked a great deal like Roger Whirly on that tackle.
- 30:49Second down and goal to go and the ball is out of the eight-yard line now. The running backs are split for Bob Greasy. Wide receivers left and right in this alignment.
- 30:56Diving back is Greasy and he pumps it into the end zone. Incomplete, a diving attempt in the end zone.
- 31:03Kenny Burrow tries the diving shoestring. It's incomplete. An incomplete pass.
- 31:09We pause briefly for station identification. This is Mutual, your news and sports radio network.
- 31:14This is KCBS San Francisco News Radio at 630.
- 31:19That incomplete pass in there was Kenny Burrow's, the great Houston Oilers star, making the dive.
- 31:27He was down on his knees if he could have just held the football a little longer. The ball popped in, they popped right back out.
- 31:34He never had it in his possession in the end zone there. He scurried for it, but he did not have it.
- 31:39Third down and goal to go. The ball is inside the eight-yard line. Wide receivers left and right running backs split for Greasy now.
- 31:45Greasy going to high, contact mid-line. The snap penalty marker is the pass play. Incomplete at the goal line.
- 31:53So there is a penalty marker to be checked out.
- 31:56Harvey Martin is the man that made the jump. Harvey jumped off sides and he knew it.
- 32:00He jumped right back and he started banging his hand in the air because he knew he'd made the mistake.
- 32:05Well, there was nothing for Bob Greasy to do but use that down because he had the opportunity offensively to do it.
- 32:11He put the ball into the end zone, incomplete, but it's coming back and it'll be yardage.
- 32:15Stepped off again against the NFC.
- 32:18The option is being exercised by the AFC, but they will accept the penalty, of course, which remains the down, remains the same.
- 32:25Ball moves inside the five-yard line and Freddie Wyatt, the referee, places it down at the four.
- 32:30That'll be third down and goal to go with the ball at the four-yard line.
- 32:33Number 79, Harvey Martin of the Dallas Cowboys and of East Texas State. Offside on the play.
- 32:43Still no score. We have two minutes 52 seconds remaining to be played in the first quarter.
- 32:48Tampa, Florida, game time temperature about 64 degrees.
- 32:53Francis the tight end of the ballgame. Kenny Burry goes to the left side. Lydell Mitchelton the left set.
- 32:58Franco Harrison the right set. Nath Moore is wide to the right side. Bob Greasy is the quarterback.
- 33:04Greasy now fakes the handoff, sets up and throws.
- 33:07Padded in complete, trying to get it to Moore out there and Russ Francis also in the end zone.
- 33:11Larry Brooks got a hand on it. Padded in complete and here comes the field goal unit.
- 33:16Tony Leonard is coming in to attempt a field goal for the American Football Conference. There is no score.
- 33:22Two minutes and 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter. No score as Lindsay pointed out,
- 33:26but about midway of the first quarter the NFC attempted a 39 yard field goal.
- 33:33Eprin Herrera put it up into the air, but it was wide to the right.
- 33:36And now the AFC gets a chance with a short chip shot. The ball will be placed at about the 11 yard line and well, Lindsay?
- 33:44A 21 yarder Ray Guy is holding for Tony Leonard. Ray Guy puts it down. Leonard boots it up. The 21 yarder is good.
- 33:50There's a timeout with the score. The AFC 3, the NFC nothing and now this word.
- 33:55Hello, I'm Bill Musi, owner of Musi Buick Opel in Menlo Park. It seems there's good news everywhere.
- 34:00The heavy rains have helped the drought, the economic barometers look great, and people in general are very optimistic.
- 34:06And at Musi Buick Opel we are very optimistic. The new Buicks are selling exceptionally well and we still have a few 77s left.
- 34:13Like a brand new Skyhawk for just $39.95 and a good selection of other models to choose from.
- 34:19But the most exciting news is our new 78 Regal. Wow, what a car.
- 34:23It's got everything an automobile could offer and just for a limited time you can have this great car for just $99 a month.
- 34:30Can you imagine just 99 a month for a new 78 Regal? Here's how it works.
- 34:35$99 a month on a 36 month special lease. The capitalized cost is just $54.33 and a realistic residual value of $29.89 and only $327 cash needed. What a lease.
- 34:50Shop around and compare, then visit Musi Buick just two blocks north of Stanford Shopping Center on El Camino Real in Menlo Park.
- 34:5779 yards in 12 plays, 3 minutes and 56 seconds. The AFC held that football as they moved it down the field to put the first score on the boards tonight.
- 35:07It's 3 to nothing in favor of the American Football Conference over the National Football Conference.
- 35:12Now the ball has been delivered out there and for the AFC, Tony Linhart who just booted that 21 yard field goal,
- 35:21when the offensive thrust of the AFC bogged down there at the 10 yard line now, he tees it up at the 35, he'll put it in the air.
- 35:29And Lindsay, it's a little nippy night down here in Florida, but it's a beautiful night for football.
- 35:33Beautiful football night for the fans and for the players and dropping back deep to receive the kickoff Eddie Brown along with Walter Payton.
- 35:40Tony Linhart has teed it up on the 35 yard line. Referee Freddie Wyatt with the whistle.
- 35:45Here comes Linhart, the sidewinder boots it up and it is taken by Brown at the 2 yard line.
- 35:50He's to the 5, cuts right to the 10 to the 15. Studestep up to the 20 to the 24 yard line.
- 35:55He's pushed back from the 24. Eddie Brown, the man who the Washington Redskins coach George Allen says never makes a mistake.
- 36:03Louis Wrighton to make the tackle and so it's going to be first and 10 at the 24 yard line for the NFC.
- 36:09Billy Thompson also up to help on that tackle and now the AFC's defensive unit goes to work and the NFC will try to offensively get some action.
- 36:18It's McCutchen and Walter Payton coming up in an aisle formation. McCutchen ahead of Payton, Pat Hayton is the quarterback wide receivers left and right.
- 36:25First down and 10 yards to go. It is Walter Payton off the left side.
- 36:29Got up across the 25 to the 26, picked up only 2 yards on the play, second down and 8 yards to go.
- 36:34Randy Gratishaw came to make the tackle. Payton led the NFC of course, led the NFL in rushing with 1,852 yards.
- 36:41Walter Payton averaged 5 and a half yards per carry throughout the season for the Chicago Bears.
- 36:48Second down and 8 yards to go. The ball is at the 26, wide receivers left and right.
- 36:52Running backs are evened up this time for Pat Hayton. Hayton through for 11 touchdowns during the season.
- 36:59Here's the Los Angeles Rams, gives it up to Walter Payton, tries the right side. Cuts up now to the 30 yard line and is stopped at the 30.
- 37:06Has a penalty marker thrown. Penalty marker is thrown.
- 37:10Edwards Lamar Parrish and Billy Thompson on the tackle. Penalty is against the NFC.
- 37:19So that will nullify Payton's game, bring the ball back and the penalty will be assessed against the National Football Conference.
- 37:26Just proves one thing, never guess or never think you see what you see.
- 37:31For instance over there I thought that flag had gone against Billy Thompson for tackling the face mask.
- 37:38Instead the penalty is being moved off, stepped off against the NFC.
- 37:43And let's wait for the official signal now Lindsay and find out what it was for.
- 37:47Illegal use of the hands, number 89 off end.
- 37:50Illegal use of the hands on Billy Joe Dupree. So that moves the ball back into NFC territory.
- 37:56That's a second down, 18 yards to go. The ball is back at the 16 yard line.
- 38:02Second and 18 at the 16. Running backs are evened up wide receivers left and right for Pat Hayton.
- 38:09Hayton dropping back to set it up again. Pumps this one and it is complete.
- 38:13Taken by Drew Pearson, he goes out of bounds at the 33 yard line.
- 38:17Drew Pearson gathered it in at the 33. Billy Thompson and Robert Brazil covering on the play.
- 38:22It's going to be up near first down yardage.
- 38:29As they're getting it properly aligned it looks as though Drew Pearson went out of bounds about a half yard short.
- 38:35A half yard short so it's going to be third down and about a color of the yard to go with the ball at the 33.
- 38:41Pearson is going out and the other tight end is coming in now.
- 38:44They'll have the double tight end alignment in there. Gene Fuget is coming in.
- 38:47So they'll try to jam it for that half yard, the NFC up at their own 33.
- 38:52McCutchen and Walter Payton are the setbacks.
- 38:55Catching to the Rams and Payton of the Chicago Bears. Payton's got it.
- 38:58He drives in there for the first in 10. Got just to the 35 yard line.
- 39:02But that's enough for a first down and 10 yards to go at the 35.
- 39:06It was Billy Thompson up from his strong safety to make the tackle for the AFC.
- 39:12Billy Thompson with great speed, an all-pro and a solid ball player, played his college football at Maryland State.
- 39:19But nine years in the National Football League he had his greatest year this year of course with Denver finally getting in to the Super Bowl.
- 39:26Sammy White comes to a wide left now. First down and 10 yards to go at the 35 yard line.
- 39:32At Hayden. Handing it off and penalty markers are thrown.
- 39:36Penalty markers left up there as Randy Gratishaw came in to make the tackle.
- 39:41Penalty is against the NFC.
- 39:43Larry McCutchen trying to go up the middle there. He spun off. He spun off one of the tackles.
- 39:49Mike Barnes' shoulder. But Randy Gratishaw is so quick there in the middle.
- 39:53Is the middle line.
- 39:54Number 72 offense.
- 39:57Illegal procedure. Costs them five. It'll be first down and 15 yards to go as the ball goes back to the 30 yard line.
- 40:04You know, Lindsay, it's awfully hard to get an offense going when you sputter like this.
- 40:08You make five yards, you back up five. You make 10, you back up five more.
- 40:13The AFC is leading. The AFC is leading by a score of three to nothing late in the first quarter.
- 40:20At Hayden gets the snap now.
- 40:22Fakes the handoff. Sets up the throw.
- 40:25And he pumps it. And it is at the 44 yard line completed there.
- 40:31At the 44. Sammy White at it.
- 40:33Was hit immediately and it's going to be marked out of bounds at the 44 yard line. It was Jack Hough over there on the tackle.
- 40:41Again short of first down yardage.
- 40:45One thing about an all-star game like this, Lindsay, you're going to see some great catches. You're going to see some men.
- 40:49You're going to say to yourself, how could a fella get that wide open?
- 40:53Well, you've got to remember one thing. They're not only great defensive players here, but there's some super offensive players here with tremendous speed.
- 41:00What you see in the Pro Bowl are individual performances, usually outstanding individual performances by great stars.
- 41:06These are the greatest players in the game today.
- 41:09Here is a handoff and again up to the 49 yard line. It was taken by Walter Payton.
- 41:14Moved it to the 49 for the first and 10. So the NFC moves it up near midfield.
- 41:18They picked up the first down.
- 41:21Billy Thompson coming in again to make the tackle.
- 41:24We have nine seconds remaining to be played in the first quarter, so that will have been the final play of this period.
- 41:29It is wound down to three seconds, two seconds, one second, and that is it.
- 41:33That's the end of the first quarter with the score AFC three, NFC nothing. Now this for Pennzoil and GM Thrupp.
- 41:39Making a long sustained drive down a football field is tough, so it has a lot in common with the driving you do every day.
- 41:46You quarterback your car through a lot of tight situations, and so does the man with the football.
- 41:51But he has protection when he's making his way down through field traffic, and the engine in your car needs protection too.
- 41:57Extra protection, because today's tough driving conditions can cause motor oil to lose its ability to protect sooner than you may expect.
- 42:05That's why Pennzoil developed PZL. Pennzoil PZL is an extended life motor oil, an exclusive formula of synthetic and natural oils.
- 42:14PZL is so good, it protects for double the miles of the longest oil change recommendation by car manufacturers.
- 42:21So get the extra protection of PZL for your engine. Look for the big PZL letters on the familiar yellow Pennzoil can.
- 42:30Pennzoil PZL, the motor oil that gives you extra safety because it protects for double the miles.
- 42:39They just joined a new club, bought a GMC pickup with a diesel engine. Not one of those 18-wheelers, but a GMC pickup.
- 42:46One that runs on diesel fuel, not gas. And because it's a V8 diesel, it's got plenty of pep. It's built by another GM division.
- 42:53Oh, I feel quite the trucker now. Yeah, just the other day an 18-wheeler gave me a honk of his air horn.
- 42:58Whoop, whoop. Sort of a welcome to the club, I guess.
- 43:02GMC, go suckin' like a...
- 43:08The All-Stars of the American Football Conference lead in the Pro Bowl here in Tampa tonight after one quarter of play by a score of 3-0.
- 43:17The NFC at midfield moving the football. And here again, Lindsey Nelson.
- 43:21All right, out west they have it first and center their own 49-yard line. The blue-clad NFC coached by Chuck Knox of the Los Angeles Rams.
- 43:28Dropping back is Matt Hayden and he throws to the left side and it is across the sideline marker and complete to Sammy White.
- 43:35Sammy White on the catch, it is across the marker. However, second and 10 at the 49-yard line. Tom Jackson covering on the play.
- 43:43Hayden is 4 for 7 so far, 54 yards. His longest game is 17.
- 43:47Greasy is 4 for 8. Had one intercepted, 62 yards. And his longest game, it was 42. We're early in the second quarter.
- 43:57Second down and 10 yards to go at the 49-yard line. McCutchen and Hayden are still the setbacks for the NFC.
- 44:05And this is McCutchen trying to left side. He breaks the tackle, goes from the 45 to the 40, turns it on, goes to the 35, and to the 33-yard line, first and 10 for the NFC.
- 44:14Lawrence McCutchen turning it on for the NFC. Finally brought down by Tony Green from his strong safety.
- 44:21Tony Green had to come up and make that stop. And I'll tell you something, great second effort. McCutchen was stopped up there at the line, broke the tackle, kept right on going, and moved some 20 yards down the field.
- 44:31He's moved it down to the 33-yard line where it's first down for the NFC.
- 44:36Again, the running backs are evened up. It is Walter Payton to the left side. And McCutchen to the right side. Contact made it to the line of scrimmage and here comes Walter Payton.
- 44:46Walter Payton, however, the penalty markers are down, so the whistle's tossed play. Louis Kelcher, I think it was, who came across before the snap.
- 44:54And so the penalty will be assessed against the American Football Conference.
- 44:59Those yellow flags down on the turf down there, you can hear the reaction of the fans. I guess at every stadium, everywhere is it football.
- 45:06When they see the flags fly, they feel a little hurt. Something might have been taken away from their favorite hero, and particularly here tonight,
- 45:12because you have 55,000 fans here and you've got a lot of great stars for them to pick as a hero.
- 45:18Confirmed, it was Louis Kelcher of San Diego and Southern Methodist University making it first down in five yards to go at the 29-yard line.
- 45:25Topping straight back now is Pat Hayden. And he's going long down to the five-yard line. Incomplete inside the five-yard line, but a penalty marker is thrown there.
- 45:35It was Goof Pearson who went up, and it was Lamar Parrish who went up with it. We have an interference call inside the five-yard line.
- 45:44Flag is dropped.
- 45:47There's going to be a lot of argument about that down there. I see Tony Green has already moved over there.
- 45:51Louis Wright, the great quarterback of the Denver Broncos, came over along with Tony, who plays with the Buffalo Bills, to talk about Lamar Parrish making the tackle.
- 45:59Lamar really stuck Pearson as he went into reaching for the football, but from here, who could say?
- 46:05They went up about the same time. Those close plays, it depends on the gentleman down there on the turf, and the officials do a great job.
- 46:12They spotted it at the four-yard line, first down and goal to go a little inside the four.
- 46:15McCutchen and Payton, that's McCutchen going to the left side, wants to cut back. Gets to the three and that's all.
- 46:20He's racked up at the three-yard line by Jack Lambert from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 46:24It's going to be second down and goal to go on the ball is at the three-yard line.
- 46:27Lambert doing a tremendous job. Two of the players on the field tonight, New England tight end Russ Francis and Los Angeles running back Larry McCutchen,
- 46:36will be part of the National Football League group making their annual USO Department of Defense tour next month.
- 46:41It's the 13th straight season that NFL players will make their tour.
- 46:46Second down and goal to go at the three-yard line. The running backs are well-slip this time. McCutchen to the right side, Walter Payton to the left side for Pat Hayden.
- 46:53The AFC is leading by a score of three nothing. Hayden now rolls and sets, looks back and throws into the end zone and it is incomplete.
- 47:00Right at the flag in the left corner an incomplete should have made it third down and goal to go at the three-yard line.
- 47:06It was intended for Billy Joe DePree his tight end. He had sent Payton out there shallow in the end zone and he'd sent the tight end.
- 47:13Deep Tony Green was covering and deflected the ball incomplete third and goal at the three-yard line.
- 47:17And Hayden handles it well back there at the quarterback spot. He took the snap, he dropped back, he turned his back almost.
- 47:23He looked to the right, he faked to the right completely. Then he turned, then he threw into the left corner pocket trying to force the football high to big Billy Joe DePree.
- 47:33Here they come up to the line once again now. It's McCutchen right and Walter Payton left third down and goal to go at the three-yard line.
- 47:39Hayden stumbles as he comes back, gets up with no contact made. He's rolling to the left side back at the 20, 25.
- 47:45Now he throws it up the middle and it is intercepted. Jack Ham has the football at the three-yard line for the AMC.
- 47:53First and 10 at the three on the interception with the score AMC 3 and AMC nothing.
- 47:59There's a timeout on the field now this for Sears and Budweiser.
- 48:03Hi there gang, Uncle Ken here. Hi Ken. Heard about Sears preseason sale on Kenmore Rue air conditioners? Air conditioners.
- 48:10Right, 17 models in most sizes. Buy now and save 20 to 70 dollars. 70 dollars.
- 48:16Right, and Sears will hold your Kenmore on layaway until April 15th for as little as 5 dollars. 5 dollars.
- 48:22Right, save 20 to 70 dollars now at Sears preseason air conditioner sale. It's Kenmore. Solid at Sears. Right.
- 48:30Yay!
- 48:32When do you think Budweiser... Hey, just as soon as me and my new skis reach the bottom of the uh, beginner slope.
- 48:42Meet you at the bottom pal, with a butt. The great tasting way to top off your first day on the slopes. Or anything else for that matter.
- 48:51When you say Budweiser... Geronimo!
- 48:57When you say Budweiser... Anheuser, voice St. Louis.
- 49:04Beautiful Tampa Stadium is the site of the Pro Bowl game. The NFC All-Stars, the American Football Conference All-Stars.
- 49:11We're in the second quarter. The AFC is leading 3-0 with a 21-yard field goal off the toe of Tony Lenhart setting the fashion.
- 49:18Alright, an interception down there moments ago by Jack Hamm. The AFC takes over the football.
- 49:23They have it at their own 3-yard line and they have gathered for a little discussion in the conference.
- 49:28The players, the 11 of them back in their own end zone. The NFC now waiting to try and take that football back.
- 49:34And what a scramble we had there as Pat Hayden fell when he had the snap of the football. Turned around, dropped back 30 yards, put it in the air, it was intercepted at the 3. Lindsay?
- 49:43First down and 10 yards to go as the AFC comes up to the line now. Wide receivers to the left and right.
- 49:49And here is a handoff. It is handed from Kenny Stabler and taken by...
- 49:55Taken up to the fast 6-yard line. It was Greg Pruitt. Greg Pruitt carried the football.
- 50:02Kenny Stabler is in their quarterback now as we are in the second quarter of the ballgame.
- 50:07So it's going to be second out at 7 yards to go with the ball out there at the 6-yard line. Wide receivers to the left.
- 50:15Pruitt. Mark Van Eeggen from the Oakland Raiders who led the AFC in rushing for this year.
- 50:21And now a hole and Pruitt, first through there, gets across the 15-yard line.
- 50:25That's Megan Van Eeggen and he's out to the 15-yard line.
- 50:29Mark Van Eeggen carried and it's going to be a first and 10. Cliff Harris up to make the tackle.
- 50:34Van Eeggen. Rushed for 1,273 yards. He is from Colgate and the Oakland Raiders.
- 50:4112 minutes 18 seconds remaining to be played. What are they playing for?
- 50:45Well the winners get $5,000 each. The losers get $2,500 each. So they're playing for $2,500 a man.
- 50:51In addition to the pride that goes with being in the exhibition hall of pro football, the Pro Bowl.
- 50:56Handed off to Greg Pruitt and Pruitt. Goes to the right side. Gets up to the 18-yard line. Picked up 3 yards.
- 51:01It's going to be second out at 7 yards to go for the AFC leading by a score of 3-0. Matt Blair came in to make the last tackle.
- 51:08Matt Blair coming up very strong there. When you think of the six linebackers they've got.
- 51:12Matt Blair, Isaiah Robertson, Jeff Seaman, Bill Berge and well Brad Van Pelt.
- 51:17Five linebackers really that the NFC has. You have great, great pursuit and great range. These fellows can cover.
- 51:23Stabler brings them up again. Right receivers to the left and right.
- 51:27The left hander. Gives the ball on the ground. Van Eeggen carries over the right tackle. Gets across to the 21-yard line.
- 51:32Mark Van Eeggen. Picks up 3. Well it will be third down and 4 yards to go.
- 51:36Randy White coming in to make the tackle. Randy White, the great defensive lineman from the Dallas Cowboys.
- 51:41Played his college football at the University of Maryland.
- 51:44White is one of those unusual players that likes the number 55. And I always think that anything in the 50s belongs to the linebackers.
- 51:51Well they thought for a long time he was going to be a linebacker. He found a home as a down lineman.
- 51:56Third down and 4 yards to go. 11 minutes remaining to be played in the first half in Tampa, Florida.
- 52:01Stabler has his running back well split so he drops back. Now puts it up. Puts it down and it is completed.
- 52:06He hits Mark Van Eeggen from the Oakland Raiders and he stopped at the 25-yard line by Isaiah Robertson.
- 52:13Going to be spotted just across the 25.
- 52:15Kenny Stabler was looking through a hole there as a big line rush came in there.
- 52:19He just looked in through a hole and fired that ball over an arm and a shoulder that was coming after him.
- 52:25And what a passer this big left hander from Alabama is.
- 52:28For the Oakland Raiders they call him the knife because he can slice you up the way he throws a football.
- 52:34First down and 10 yards to go. The ball is at the 26-yard line.
- 52:38The AFC leading by 3 points. Stabler dropping back again the left hander.
- 52:42Looks and he puts it up long. Down the left out line it is incomplete.
- 52:47He was hoping that Clif Branch could run under it. Their teammates at Oakland.
- 52:50Incompletion. Roger Worley covering defensively on the play. He'll make it 2nd and 10 at the 26th.
- 52:55Well that's a combination for you. Kenny Stabler throwing at Clif Branch catching and did they do it well this year.
- 53:01Branch caught 33 passes for 6 touchdowns at super speed.
- 53:05But the little receiver just, well that pass actually was just outside of the reach of anybody in the playing field.
- 53:11It went out of bounds.
- 53:12So now clad in white and red the AFC comes up to the line once again on the 2nd and 10.
- 53:18Wide receivers are left and right. Kenny Stabler bending in now to take the snap.
- 53:22Stabler handing it off and a 2nd by Mark Van Eeghen. He gets across the 30-yard line.
- 53:27Van Eeghen from the Oakland Raiders stopped by Clif Harris.
- 53:31It's at the 32-yard line for again a 6-yard on the play. It'll be 3rd and 4.
- 53:36Some of that buoy coming from down at the end zone down there.
- 53:39Fans feel that maybe Van Eeghen was scrambling for a little bit of that yardage.
- 53:43And he might have went down 3 yards back and scrambled a little bit forward to pick up an additional yardage too.
- 53:49It's an enthusiastic football crowd here in Tampa tonight. They're enjoying every minute of the Pro Bowl.
- 53:553rd down and 4 yards to go. Kenny Stabler dropping back, sets up again.
- 54:00Now looks pumps it up the middle and it's complete across the 45-yard line.
- 54:04So that's going to be enough. That was Dave Casper, the All-American at Notre Dame who became an All-Pro with the Oakland Raiders.
- 54:11And the ball is at the 48-yard line. It was Claude Humphrey who came in to make the tackle.
- 54:17Great pressure put on down there. Stabler got that ball loose just...
- 54:21Well he waited until the last split second to let the ball go.
- 54:25And Dave Casper, the great All-Pro from Notre Dame made the grab up near the 50-yard line.
- 54:30A big first down play as the AFC is really moving it now.
- 54:34AFC is leading in this ball game by 3 points on a field goal.
- 54:37They have the ball up near midfield now. They leave it on the ground to Van Eeghen.
- 54:40Van Eeghen can cross the 50-yard to the 48-yard line. Mark Van Eeghen picked up 4 yards on the play.
- 54:45Suddenly second down and 6 yards to go.
- 54:48The AFC coached by Ted Marchabrotta and his staff from Baltimore, Bill Berge along with Cleveland Elam, made the tackle.
- 54:56You know when you take a look at Berge, Van Pelt and Isaiah Robertson, you've got 3 of the best in the business in linebacker.
- 55:01Running against these fellas is a very, very difficult thing, particularly Berge.
- 55:05Berge is about as tough a defensive man to run against I guess there is in pro football today.
- 55:10I think he is. It's second down and 6 yards to go. The running back's written an I for a mission.
- 55:14Here is a quick pitch now and it's taken to the left side by Greg Foote.
- 55:17He has the Cleveland Browns inside the 40 and he's knocked out of bounds by Bill Berge once again.
- 55:23It's going to be another first and 10 as the AFC has driven in the NFC territory first and 10 at the 39-yard line.
- 55:29Berge says that if it ain't contact, it ain't football.
- 55:34One of the great days for the Philadelphia Eagles today, they got Berge from Cincinnati.
- 55:39That's right, traded in 1974 after he played over there with Cincinnati so well for so many years.
- 55:44And here is a guy that's not only tough on the run, but he has 21 career interceptions also.
- 55:49Lippreich goes to the right side. Lynn Swann comes to the left side.
- 55:52Running back's in an I formation for Stabler first and 10 at the 39-yard line of the NFC.
- 55:57Stabler drops back the left-hander, puffs it and it is completed to Brance.
- 56:00Brance is inside the 25 at the 23-yard line.
- 56:03First and 10 for the NFC at the AFC 23. Stabler to Brance the Oakland combination.
- 56:08Allen Ellis is a man who made the tackle there on him, although Cliff Harris was coming over there to try and put a little, to give him a helping hand.
- 56:16Harris was halfway there and came on to give him a helping hand after Allen Ellis had made the lock on him.
- 56:21Ellis is the ball player, young man, the cornerback from the Chicago Bears who replaced the injured Monty Jackson.
- 56:27And it's a shame Monty did not have an opportunity to play.
- 56:30First down and 10 yards to go, the ball is spotted squarely on the 22-yard line.
- 56:34Brance goes to the right side, Lenz wanted to the left side, the running backs were evened up.
- 56:38Stabler keeps it on the ground this time, again of about a yard on the play at all.
- 56:43Freud picked up about a yard on the play to make it second down and nine at the 21-yard line.
- 56:50Clock is running with seven minutes, 11 seconds.
- 56:53Claude Humphrey and Jack Youngblood coming in to make the tackle.
- 56:56You don't run too far there now.
- 56:58There had to be a mix-up on the plays there, Lindsay, because the right guard made the pull and was looked as though he were leading his sweep to the left-hand side.
- 57:06He was not working on a trap, so he was coming to the left-hand side and the runner ran behind him straight into the line.
- 57:12You get a lot of outstanding individual performance at Small Wonder that there aren't a great many more mix-ups.
- 57:16Dropping back is Stabler and Stabler pumps this one and it's completed the 10-yard line to Swan.
- 57:21Lenz Swan and it's a first down and goal they go inside the 10-yard line.
- 57:26Roger Whirly made the stop.
- 57:28Roger Whirly made the stop all right, but Swan just scooted into the middle there and it was no hesitation.
- 57:34Stabler took that little stutter step, that one-two bump and throw, and he fired it. He drilled it in there.
- 57:40I tell you, I wonder sometimes how these young men, who are not really big, when you take a look at Swan, he's six feet, 180 pounds, can hold on to the football the way Stabler can throw it.
- 57:48He can throw it through a wall.
- 57:50First down and goal they go just inside the 10-yard line.
- 57:52The running backs are split there. Wide receivers left and right.
- 57:55Stabler now waiting with a snap. He's got the football. He's dropping back. Stabler takes a look.
- 57:59Pumps it into the end zone. Touchdown!
- 58:01Taken by Brights, Cliff Brights.
- 58:03Cliff Brights again the Oakland combination for 10 yards and a touchdown.
- 58:08And the AFC has the first touchdown of the night.
- 58:11Berge, Robertson, and Whirly were in there in a trio, in a triangle back there trying to make coverage on Cliff Branch.
- 58:18And there it just marked that one down now as a possible Pennzoil key player of the night.
- 58:24Touchdown that sets them out in front by a score of nine to nothing.
- 58:27The AFC will try for the point after.
- 58:29Ray Guy is under hold now for Tony Leonard, who will attempt to use a sidewinder from Austria Tech.
- 58:34And for the Baltimore Colts, Ray Guy hand outstretched, weights puts it down.
- 58:38Tony Leonard boots it up. It's good.
- 58:40With the score, the AFC 10, the NFC nothing.
- 58:44There's a timeout on the field and now this for GM Trucks.
- 58:47Well I'm sitting tall and I'm riding proud with this road in front of me.
- 58:54Cause there's nothing like this truck of mine to set me flying free.
- 59:00Yeah there's nothing like the feeling those wheels ride on me.
- 59:06Nothing goes chucking like a GMC.
- 59:10You can spend your money on a sweet young honey with my gold and fancy things.
- 59:14But the top of the line of this truck of mine and the pleasure that it brings.
- 59:18Yeah there's nothing like the feeling and it's all it needs.
- 59:23Nothing goes chucking like a GMC.
- 59:30I said there's nothing like the feeling those wheels ride on me.
- 59:36Nothing goes chucking like a GMC.
- 59:40Nothing goes chucking like a GMC.
- 59:4697 yards, 14 plays. That's almost the whole field.
- 59:517 minutes and 12 seconds of possession time for the AFC as they control the football.
- 59:56And marched almost the entire field to get the touchdown.
- 59:59It came a 10 yard pass from Kenny Stabler to Cliff Branch.
- 1:00:03And now the AFC sets to kick off leading 10, nothing.
- 1:00:07Tony Leonard puts it up, Eddie Brown is deep along with Walda Baben Brown.
- 1:00:11Chases over, takes it at the 3 yard line.
- 1:00:13The other left sideline cuts back to the 10 to the 15.
- 1:00:16Legs turning, he goes to the 20 yard line and that is where they'll start.
- 1:00:19First and 10 at the 20 yard line. Tom Jackson made the tackle.
- 1:00:22Eddie Brown went far over to the left, took that ball just inches inside the sideline.
- 1:00:26Marker, we pause briefly for station identification.
- 1:00:29This is Mutual, your news and sports radio network.
- 1:00:32KCBS San Francisco, News Radio 74.
- 1:00:39You know, Lindsay, we were talking about the representatives on this team.
- 1:00:42On the NFC squad there are 10 Los Angeles Rams, 8 Dallas Cowboys, 5 from the Cardinals.
- 1:00:47The NFC in possession, they have the ball. And once again, Lindsay Nelson.
- 1:00:51First down and 10 yards to go, just inside the 20 yard line.
- 1:00:55Out of an eye formation, Jim Hart is handing it up and is taking it to the mid-gap.
- 1:00:59And the mid-gap breaks one tackle but can't get to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:01:02He is stopped at the 19 yard line. Jim Hart, the quarterback, Terry Metcalf, his teammates in the St. Louis Cardinals, stopped by Jack Lambert of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:01:11Lambert covering well across the way there and the big man backing behind or playing behind Randy Gratishaw tonight.
- 1:01:18He is as good a football player as you want in that middle lineback spot.
- 1:01:21Playing in his third Pro Bowl, four years in professional football.
- 1:01:25Lambert now in his third Pro Bowl here tonight.
- 1:01:28Second down, 11 yards to go, Chuck Foreman is in there. Foreman and Metcalf for the setbacks.
- 1:01:33Wide receivers left and right for Jim Hart.
- 1:01:36The NFC has been unable to get untracked here tonight to hang it up to the mid-gap.
- 1:01:40He tries the right side, now tries to cut back and can't get to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:01:45Stopped about a foot short of the line of scrimmage, called it and no game at the 19 as it was Louis Wright, along with John Dutton who brought him down at the 19 yard line, making it third down, 11 yards to go.
- 1:01:55Big John Dutton, nobody could contain him, he just blasted through there.
- 1:01:59He broke the play, he broke up the effort of the runner, and it was Louis Wright, Louis Wright who came on to make the tackle, the Denver cornerback.
- 1:02:08We have four minutes, 34 seconds remaining to be played in the first half and the AFC is leading by a score of 10-0.
- 1:02:14Chuck Foreman, Terry Metcalf, still to setbacks. Wide receivers left and right for Jim Hart.
- 1:02:18He of the St. Louis Cardinals, he joined the squad when Roger Stalbach came up with an injured finger, could not play.
- 1:02:24Tapping back is right there, there's a penalty marker on the play, whistle stop play, there was movement before the snap.
- 1:02:30Movement before the snap and so there is a penalty inflicted here.
- 1:02:35Harold Jackson and Mel Gray both had broken out of the blocks as quickly as they could.
- 1:02:40Gray across the way was already 20 yards down field, he was really cruising there.
- 1:02:45He intended to go long on it and I believe, I just believe that the NFC was going with a long one.
- 1:02:51A procedure penalty cost them five yards, moving it back to the 14, making it third down and 16 yards to go.
- 1:02:57Third and 16 for the NFC.
- 1:03:01Four minutes, 17 seconds remaining to be played and the first half, Jim Hart's the quarterback.
- 1:03:09Running backs are split.
- 1:03:14Hart's waiting for the snap now, going to a high count.
- 1:03:18Penalty marker again, movement before the snap again.
- 1:03:21Movement before the snap once again, looks like Ed White the guard who straightened up the pole and it is against the NFC once again.
- 1:03:29That's exactly right, Lindsey. From the three point stance, Ed White had popped up.
- 1:03:34He popped his shoulders up there very quickly and it's going to cost them five more yards.
- 1:03:40Number 62 offense, third down.
- 1:03:43Confirmed, number 62, Ed White from Minnesota and the University of California.
- 1:03:48That moves it back to the nine and makes it third down and 21 yards to go.
- 1:03:53The NFC back in their own end zone and they're backing up now instead of moving that football forward.
- 1:03:57Four minutes and 15 seconds remaining until halftime.
- 1:04:01Foreman, that Metcalf, are the setbacks now at his third down and 21 yards to go.
- 1:04:06Jim Hart, still quarterbacking the NFC, drops back, he's at his own goal line now, goes it over the middle and it's complete to the 15 yard line and it passed out to the 20 yard line.
- 1:04:18Taken that there by Gene Fugit. Gene Fugit, the receiver who got it out to the 20 yard line, not nearly enough for the first.
- 1:04:25So the punting in it comes on now for the NFC, led out by John James of the Atlanta Falcons and the University of Florida.
- 1:04:33He is perennially one of the top punters in the game of football.
- 1:04:38Mike Haines is stopping back along with Billy White, who used to receive the pun. Mike Haines, who came here to practice Friday, went to Tempe, Arizona, was married and then returned to practice and is in the ballgame tonight.
- 1:04:50James is standing back at the six yard line, waiting for the snap.
- 1:04:54Gets it now.
- 1:04:56Puts it up, a high trajectory, one, fair catch signal goes up and it is made at the 45 yard line. It'll start first and 10 at the 45 yard line.
- 1:05:04It was Haines who made the catch. There's a timeout with a score A of C, 10 and a C, nothing and now this word.

- 1:06:06Three minutes and 22 seconds remain in the first half here at the Pro Bowl in Tampa, Florida, with a score.
- 1:06:16The AFC 10, the NFC nothing. Kenny Stabler now will try to put that ball back into play again as the AFC takes over after a punt at their own 45 yard line.
- 1:06:26Great field position. The last time, Stabler led the 97 yards to score.
- 1:06:30Five of six completions, 58 yards, one touchdown. Stabler at the helms and here comes the AFC up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:06:37A punt by James for 35. There was no return first and 10 now for the AFC at their own 45 yard line.
- 1:06:43Mark Van Eeghen has the football. He's across the 50 and up the middle of the 46 yard line.
- 1:06:47Van Eeghen of Colgate and the Oakland Raiders and Jack Youngblood.
- 1:06:51They're going to make the tackle at the 46 yard line.
- 1:06:54That's going to be a yard short of a first, second and one.
- 1:06:57Van Eeghen, what a football player he is.
- 1:07:00The third Raider to top a thousand yards in a year and went on to build a big year this year.
- 1:07:071,273 yards on this season from Colgate, a fantastic runner.
- 1:07:12The branch comes to the left side and that more goes to the right side.
- 1:07:15Second down and a yard to go. There's a handoff taken by Greg Pruitt.
- 1:07:18Pruitt struggles and just got I think the first down as he was brought down at the 45. Ken Houston brought him down but I think he got the first.
- 1:07:25I think he was right, Lindsay. I think he did.
- 1:07:27He was struggling to get across the 45 yard line. The Pro Bowl of course was recently restructured.
- 1:07:32This is the first year that players were selected by a combined vote of players and coaches.
- 1:07:37Players were not allowed to vote for players of their own team but they have taken on a special pride in being here this year because they were selected by their contemporaries.
- 1:07:46First and 10 now at the 45 yard line. Kenny Stabler brings them up once again. He's flipped the running back. He's a left hander as you know.
- 1:07:53Stabler drives back, short drop, pumps it out to Bryant. Bryant has hit the 39 but that's all.
- 1:07:58He has pushed back and it'll be spotted near the 40 yard line. Again a five on the play. Roger Worley in the back to tackle.
- 1:08:04With the score the AFC 10, the NFC nothing. The two minute warning. There's a timeout on the field.
- 1:08:09Now this is the Teamsters and General Electric.
- 1:08:11Twenty bucks doesn't go very far anymore, not unless you're a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
- 1:08:17Teamsters are the world's largest union and they got that way by providing benefits that money can't even buy.
- 1:08:22Membership dues are about $20 on average. They mean best wages, health protection, family and retirement security and other benefits.
- 1:08:30Teamsters are getting their money's worth for 2.3 million families strong and growing.
- 1:08:36The Teamsters, a part of the American life.
- 1:08:41What's all the buzzing about? Now through March 11th there's a great $5 rebate on GE's battery operated smoke alarm.
- 1:08:48You heard it. General Electric will send you $5 when you buy their battery operated smoke alarm.
- 1:08:53It's something that every home should have. So pick up one or as many as you need.
- 1:08:57It's a great gift idea too. But hurry, offer ends March 11th and time is running out.
- 1:09:02The GE battery operated smoke alarm $5 rebate. It's news that's worth buzzing about.
- 1:09:10Moving into our mutual microphones beside Lindsey and I now, there's another voice heard on mutual and the great football coach, Don Schuller of the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:09:19Nice to have you here Don.
- 1:09:20How are you doing Lindsey? Good to be with you.
- 1:09:22Good to see you.
- 1:09:23We've seen quite a football game. How about that talent out there now? Could you do some damage if you could pick a few out there?
- 1:09:29Well, you know we have some people out there from the Miami Dolphins, Bob Greasy, Jim Langer, Kuchenberg and Nat Moore.
- 1:09:36Nat had a great year. Greasy of course was the MVP and he's going to get an award in Philadelphia on Wednesday night.
- 1:09:42The Burt Bell Award is going to be given to Bob as the most valuable player in the National Football League.
- 1:09:47Very stable of handing off Lindsey and picking up a little bit of yardage as Mark Van Eeggen I believe.
- 1:09:52Van Eeggen got it up under the 38 yard line, picked up two, it'll be third on two.
- 1:09:56I know you've got a thought of two, you want to pop it Don. You were talking to me about it before.
- 1:10:00Matter of fact Don, do you think fellow players take any pride at all in being participants in the Pro Bowl game?
- 1:10:06Well I think very much so. They recognize that these are the outstanding players and this year it's a little bit different.
- 1:10:12The format is different. It's voted by the coaches and then the players have an equal vote.
- 1:10:16And I know that they took a lot of time in the meetings to try to come up with the people that they thought deserved the honor of representing the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference here.
- 1:10:26Van Eeggen has picked up a first down. Now he's moving just outside the 32 yard line, first and 10.
- 1:10:31Stabler really had a hot hand there at the beginning of the second quarter. He really was sharp.
- 1:10:35Didn't he though? It took him almost the length of the field.
- 1:10:37What a pair of quarterbacks, Bob Greasy and Kenny Stabler.
- 1:10:41Stabler back again, pumps this one in. Incomplete trying to get to Cliff Branch and he was popped immediately and it's an incomplete pass.
- 1:10:49He put it on the money though. Branch had it in his hand.
- 1:10:52When you throw them like that you worry. That gives you fellows gray hairs on the sideline doesn't it?
- 1:10:56It really does. Greasy's first interception. He hit Franco Harris right in the hands and the ball bounced out and they intercepted it.
- 1:11:02In the box score it says interception but Bob put it on the money.
- 1:11:07It'll be second and 10. We've got 59 seconds remaining in the first half here now. The AFC is leading by a score of 10-0.
- 1:11:14Alright coach, what do you call from the sidelines? Put it up. Get greedy and put it up.
- 1:11:20There's a quick pass. That's the same pass to the fullback. Cutting over the middle.
- 1:11:26Incomplete at the 25. That'll be third down and 10 yards to go.
- 1:11:30How much of a difficulty is it in getting a team ready for this game, Don?
- 1:11:34The fact that you do have certain restrictions. No blitzing except on third and short and that sort of thing.
- 1:11:38Well this helps because you only have a short time to work with the players but the big thing is just get them on the same page as far as the terminology offensively and defensively.
- 1:11:47Teams have different ways to call offensive formations and defensive sets and here the big job of the coaches is to try to get them all on the same page.
- 1:11:57Alright, yes, Stabler again. Fentanyl marker is thrown.
- 1:12:03Ranch was the intended receiver out there but that fellow Roger Whirly is right there where the football is. He's a good one.
- 1:12:09Roger has been in this game a few times.
- 1:12:13Lindsay, I'm going to give you five yards. How's that?
- 1:12:19A beautiful night for football and Coach I know that when you think about, and you already have started planning, I know Don Schiller, getting ready for 1978.
- 1:12:29That already you have some ideas about the draft coming up here in about three months.
- 1:12:34We really do. We're very pleased about our young people and the way that they developed last year.
- 1:12:40They came on strong in the second half of the season and played good football and we hope that we can come up with another good group of young people and keep the veterans around for a few more years.
- 1:12:51Holding finally makes it first instead of the 27th. Stabler throwing incomplete out of the 12 yard line and having it down there by not more.
- 1:12:57That's going to be, I beg your pardon, second and 10 out to 27.
- 1:13:02Stabler hangs in that pocket as good as any quarterback in football. He just waits and waits and that gives the receiver that extra time to put the move on the defensive back and come open.
- 1:13:13It's almost a necessity here when you consider the great cornerbacks and the safeties, the way they cover here.
- 1:13:19When you've got these kind of all star performers, you've got to wait a little bit second.
- 1:13:23That's right. That's a pretty good front four rushing the pass in there too.
- 1:13:26There it is. Second down, 10 yards to go. Stabler again dropping back.
- 1:13:32Makes a look, goes long, down to the end zone and it's incomplete.
- 1:13:42Tell you what, Charlie, Cliff Harris is an angry man down there. He is not very happy with that call.
- 1:13:48They put a sandwich on that receiver down there. They really sandwiched him in.
- 1:13:54He felt the receiver kept him from intercepting the ball.
- 1:13:57He did. Allen Ellis and Cliff Harris sandwiching him like a third down and 10. The ball comes back out to the 27. 41 seconds left and a half.
- 1:14:05In this game now you can do a little pumping, though, can't you?
- 1:14:08Right. You're allowed to one bump.
- 1:14:14AFC back in the huddle and Stabler brings it up once again.
- 1:14:19You've got Kenny Burrow coming out to a wide left and running backs in an eye formation.
- 1:14:25Here's a quick pitch. Pruitt's got it.
- 1:14:27Tries the right side, gets inside the 25 and he's down to the 23 yard line.
- 1:14:31He's picked up about four on the play but that'll make it a fourth down.
- 1:14:34Go set Van Eeghan. Now there's Mark Van Eeghan and he just put a block there on Kenny Houston, a savvy old pro.
- 1:14:41He just laid it to him and made the run, the few yards possible there.
- 1:14:46This Van Eeghan is not only a great runner, he's a great blocker, he's an all around football player.
- 1:14:50He's really come on and he's given Oakland the type of full backing that they like.
- 1:14:54He's a thousand yarder now for two years in a row.
- 1:14:57Tony Leonard with a 39 yarder tap. It is up and it is good. A 39 yard field goal by Tony Leonard of the AFC.
- 1:15:06And so the score now is 13 nothing to the AFC more after this special 60 second message for General Electric and Lazy Boy Chairs.
- 1:15:14What's all the buzzing about? Now through March 11th there's a great $5 rebate on GE's battery operated smoke alarm.
- 1:15:22You heard it. General Electric will send you $5 when you buy their battery operated smoke alarm.
- 1:15:28It's something that every home should have. So pick up one or as many as you need.
- 1:15:32It's a great gift idea too. But hurry, offer ends March 11th and time is running out.
- 1:15:37The GE battery operated smoke alarm $5 rebate. It's news that's worth buzzing about.
- 1:15:43Hi, Joe Namath here. You know what band music means to me? It means half time, relax.
- 1:15:53Of course the best way to do that is in a Lazy Boy chair. Lazy Boy makes all kinds of comfortable recliners in all kinds of styles.
- 1:16:00Comfort and style. That must be why Lazy Boy is America's favorite chair.
- 1:16:05Lazy Boy, your favorite is on sale now. So march on over and get it.
- 1:16:13The AFC will kick it off with three seconds remaining in the first half. 13-0.
- 1:16:19The American Football Conference leads and team the football up Tony Lenhart ready to put his foot into it.
- 1:16:2445 yards they moved in 12 plays. 3 minutes and 14 seconds they held the football.
- 1:16:29And the field goal 39 yards by Tony Lenhart 13-0. The AFC set for the kickoff. Here we come, Lindsey.
- 1:16:36Eddie Brown and Walter Payton are deep to receive the kickoff of the NFC.
- 1:16:40Play has been dominated by the AFC in the first half and they lead by a score of 13-0.
- 1:16:44Lenhart puts it on the ground over to Eddie Brown's side, scoops it up at the 11 yard line, gets back to the 15, cuts toward midfield of the 20-25.
- 1:16:52Can't find anywhere to go and he has stopped just across the 25.
- 1:16:55That's the end of the first half with a score AFC 13-0 and now this for Las Vegas.
- 1:17:01The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority presents Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy.
- 1:17:06I thought we might vacation in Las Vegas this year, Charlie. You know it's the entertainment capital of the world.
- 1:17:11Yeah, yeah, I can hardly wait to see those beautiful Las Vegas showgirls.
- 1:17:15But there's more to do in Las Vegas than sit by the stage and watch girls.
- 1:17:19Don't forget there are things to do in the daytime too.
- 1:17:21Sure, sit by the pool and watch the girls. All right, all right.
- 1:17:25Besides swimming there's golf, tennis, and being out in that clear desert air makes one more handsome.
- 1:17:31Oh yeah, did you ever see a camel? Hey, how will we get there, Bergen?
- 1:17:35Well, the Las Vegas airport is just on the edge of town so I thought we would fly.
- 1:17:40I'll fly when I get there.
- 1:17:42They have more than 38,000 beautifully decorated rooms.
- 1:17:46Speaking of beautiful decorations, you know, I wonder how I do get a date with a showgirl.
- 1:17:51Well, let's call our travel agent right now for reservations.
- 1:17:54Yeah, tell him to reserve me a blonde.
- 1:17:57Girls, all of us girls.
- 1:17:58I hope so.
- 1:18:00We have the new five inductees for the National Football League Hall of Fame,
- 1:18:05which will be introduced to you at halftime.
- 1:18:07And we'll have our halftime activities after station identification.
- 1:18:11This is Mutual, your news and sports network.
- 1:18:1424 hours a day, your news voice in Northern California.
- 1:18:17This is KCBS San Francisco.
- 1:18:21And now the kickoff of the second half.
- 1:18:23A friend, Herrera, will boot it off and Billy White shoes Johnson is deep to receive the kickoff of the AFC.
- 1:18:28Here comes Herrera, he puts it up.
- 1:18:32Johnson takes it at the 14, drops the ball, picks it up, and he is back to the 20 and is stopped at the 24 yard line.
- 1:18:39So it'll be first and 10 at the 24.
- 1:18:41It was Brad Van Pelt downfield to make the tackle.
- 1:18:44We pause briefly for station identification.
- 1:18:46This is Mutual, your news and sports radio network.
- 1:18:49News 24 hours a day, every day on News Radio 74, KCBS San Francisco.
- 1:18:55The American Football League now in possession of the football, first down at their own 24 yard line.
- 1:19:01As we get the third quarter underway, a 13 to nothing lead.
- 1:19:05And, Lindsay, as they break the huddle, I see that Bob Greasy is back at the helm.
- 1:19:10Bob Greasy brings him up now. He's from the Miami Dolphins and the University of Purdue.
- 1:19:14His first and 10 at the 24 yard line.
- 1:19:16Greasy is waiting for the snap with wide receivers left and right.
- 1:19:19Simply leaves this one on the ground, a steady step taken in by Franco Harris, and he moves it to the 28 yard line.
- 1:19:26Picked up about four yards on the play, and it's going to be second down and six.
- 1:19:29Matt Blair from his linebacker post came in to make the tackle.
- 1:19:35We are early in the third quarter, a Pro Bowl at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
- 1:19:40An enthusiastic crowd on hand here tonight for the playing of this all-star game.
- 1:19:46Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris are the setbacks teammates some six years ago at Penn State.
- 1:19:52Or Joe Paterno dropping straight back.
- 1:19:55Yes, Greasy throws a turnout to Kenny Burrow, and Burrow steps out of bounds up to 34 yard line.
- 1:20:01Perhaps to 33 when they finally get it spotted.
- 1:20:04Rollin' Lawrence in to make the tackle and run him out of bounds.
- 1:20:07Lawrence comes up very quickly on that little turnout, but there is absolutely no way to defend against that.
- 1:20:12If you throw the turnout the way it's supposed to be, the ball is on the inside.
- 1:20:16The only way you can do is go banging into the would-be receiver and pick yourself up a yellow flag in a hurry.
- 1:20:22And that ball, down at the 33 yard line, is very close to another first down.
- 1:20:27Third down at a yard to go, double tight on alignment as Dave Casper comes in as he joins Russ Francis.
- 1:20:32Third and one at the 33 yard line.
- 1:20:35Running backs are tightly aligned now, and it is handed off, and there's Franco hitting in, and Franco Harris.
- 1:20:42Pushed back as he's trying to get to the sticks, and it'll depend entirely on where the ball is spotted.
- 1:20:46Up there close, appeared to be thrown back and not to get to the sticks, but we'll find out as soon as they get them unstacked.
- 1:20:52Down on the bottom there is the unpowered, Lindsey. I see Cliff Harris was in there.
- 1:20:58And the middle of that line, also Harvey Martin in on the play.
- 1:21:01Did not make it until the punting unit comes in now for the AFC, and that's Ray Guy coming in for his first punt of the night.
- 1:21:07He, of course, led the league with an average of 43.3 from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
- 1:21:13And the Oakland Raiders, it has been said by some observers, when you classify punters, there is Ray Guy, and then there are all the rest.
- 1:21:20And that is true.
- 1:21:22He has dropped back now.
- 1:21:24Eddie Brown is back in safety, standing at his own 28 to receive the punt.
- 1:21:29There's the snap now, and Guy puts it up.
- 1:21:31Eddie Brown follows the trajectory. He's back at the 23. Takes it, goes left to the 25 to the 30.
- 1:21:36He does this 35 to the 40. Back to midfield, 45 to the 50.
- 1:21:39Eddie Brown on the University of Tennessee, moves it to the 45-yard line.
- 1:21:43First down at 10 yards to go on a brilliant return by the Washington Redskins returner.
- 1:21:49I'll tell you, he ran it back, and he gave you everything.
- 1:21:52For a moment it looked there as though he was going to break it all the way.
- 1:21:55He broke a couple of tackles there.
- 1:21:57Dave Dalby had a shot at him. Dave Dalby couldn't handle him.
- 1:22:00It was a beautiful run back, and it's now in the, well, NFC possession and over in the AFC territory.
- 1:22:07At the 46, a punt of 44 yards to return by Eddie Brown of 31 yards.
- 1:22:13Just handed off, and it is taken out to the 42-yard line by Terry Metcalf.
- 1:22:19And he has stopped there after gaining a four. It'll be second out at six yards to go.
- 1:22:23Randy Gratishaw came in to make the tackle, a middle linebacker.
- 1:22:27The Lazy Boy Chair Company again awarding a famous Lazy Boy recliner to the outstanding offensive and defensive players in this game.
- 1:22:34Tom McEwan of the Tampa Tribune, Cameron Snyder of the Baltimore Sun, and Larry Fox of the New York Daily News are our judges,
- 1:22:40and we will announce the winners at the conclusion of the game.
- 1:22:44Foreman and Metcalf are the setbacks now, and there is a handoff from Pat Hayden to Chuck Foreman,
- 1:22:49and the Minnesota Viking running back gets inside the 35-yard line, moving to his left.
- 1:22:53He's at the 34. Robert Brazile made the tackle.
- 1:22:56I'll tell you, we had a matchup down there. We had Terry Metcalf leading the way,
- 1:23:01and Terry Metcalf blocking down on Robert Brazile, the big 238-pound linebacker on that right side.
- 1:23:07And that's just not the right kind of matchup. Metcalf weighs about 180.
- 1:23:11It's a first down for the NFC, and they haven't had many tonight. They have the ball at the 34-yard line.
- 1:23:17The AFC is leading by a score of 13 to nothing. Pat Hayden quarterbacking,
- 1:23:22handing this one off to Metcalf, and Metcalf gets to the 31-yard line.
- 1:23:26Janna Three-yard on the play, it'll be second out in seven.
- 1:23:29Lou Coucher coming to make the tackle for the AFC.
- 1:23:33Lou A. Coucher from San Diego. He played his football at SMU. He's a big lad.
- 1:23:38His first Pro Bowl, by the way, third year in professional football, 6'5", 282 pounds when he's well fed.
- 1:23:46Excellent football weather here on Tampa Fire tonight, just crisp enough to make it interesting.
- 1:23:50Second out in seven yards to go. The running backs are evened up.
- 1:23:53Pat Hayden waits for the snap. He drops back, nice short drop, and over to the right side.
- 1:23:58It is taken at the 22-yard line. Lamar Parrish covering defensive view, but it is a reception at the 22-yard line.
- 1:24:06Gathered in there by Mel Gray, just as he fell across the sideline marker, but the call is good at the 22.
- 1:24:12Here's one of the smallest receivers in the entire National Football League. He's only 5'9",
- 1:24:17weighs about 170 pounds from Missouri. His 20.6 yards per catch, the best in the National Football League this year.
- 1:24:25And this alignment is Mel Gray far to the left side, first and ten at the 22-yard line.
- 1:24:30SS Terry Metcalf trying the left side. Slides inside the 20-yard line, just inside.
- 1:24:35Again, about two yards on the play, make it second out and eight yards to go.
- 1:24:39The NFC trying to get something on the scoreboard with the AFC leading 13-0 in the third quarter.
- 1:24:44Almost, well usually you would expect the AFC to run to the left side because they have the great offensive tackle
- 1:24:51and guard over there, Art Shell and Gene Upshaw. This time here is the NFC running to the left side strong
- 1:24:57with Foreman leading the way and Metcalf behind him.
- 1:25:00Second out and eight yards to go. Pat Hayden drops back now, takes a look, swings it out in the right to Foreman.
- 1:25:05Foreman cutting back toward midfield of the 25th-teenth, forward to the nine-yard line.
- 1:25:10First down and goal to go at the nine, Lamar Parrish brought him down.
- 1:25:13Out on the right flat to Chuck Foreman. He got more yardage out of a play, out of a screenplay,
- 1:25:20a screen pass that really never got far. He got more yardage out of it than anybody I've seen this year.
- 1:25:26Screen didn't come out, he ran back toward midfield. There's no looking part and then changed direction,
- 1:25:30came back and drove to the nine-yard line. First down and goal to go.
- 1:25:34The NFC is driving here now. Metcalf and Foreman are even up for Pat Hayden.
- 1:25:40Wide receivers to the left and right. It's Foreman to the left side looking for a cut.
- 1:25:44Can't find a corner to turn. No game. He drops at the nine-yard line.
- 1:25:48It's second out and goal at the nine. It was Tony Green and Mike Haynes closing him off out there.
- 1:25:53But it was Big John Dutton who broke up the play. He strung it out there. Big John was over there,
- 1:25:58stringing it out all the way and not letting him get the yardage they anticipated out of that play.
- 1:26:03They just couldn't turn the corner.
- 1:26:05Ball is spotted inside the nine-yard line now. We're at second out and goal to go.
- 1:26:09Nine minutes, 54 seconds remaining to be played in the third quarter.
- 1:26:13Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Mel Gray going to a wide left now.
- 1:26:16Foreman's in the left set. Metcalf is in the right set for Pat Hayden.
- 1:26:21Waiting for the snap. Dropping back is Hayden.
- 1:26:25Sets now, pumps this one and it is complete at the five-yard line.
- 1:26:30Just inside the five-yard. Terry Metcalf hanging on to it.
- 1:26:33Tom Jackson made the stop and is spotted inside the five-yard line where it's going to be third down and goal to go
- 1:26:39for the NFC. A big third down play coming here.
- 1:26:43Hey, one thing. Hayden really threaded a needle there.
- 1:26:46He threw to a Terry Metcalf at the five who was down on his knees and caught it in the letters.
- 1:26:52I mean, that's right off the top of the shoes.
- 1:26:55Pat Hayden now marching up to the line of scrimmages. Running backs are well set.
- 1:27:00Wide receivers to the left and right.
- 1:27:03All is inside the five-yard line. Hayden drops back.
- 1:27:06Looks now, pumps this one and it is caught. Touchdown is Terry Metcalf.
- 1:27:11He was in the end zone. Ran back across the goal line into the field to play, but all he got to do is
- 1:27:16process it over the play into the goal line for the touchdown.
- 1:27:19That is it. A touchdown pass from Hayden to Metcalf. The NFC is on the board.
- 1:27:24And we've got another nomination for a Pennsar Key Play Award.
- 1:27:28Now it's a 13-6 football game.
- 1:27:31And when these gentlemen start thinking in the second half about the difference in paychecks,
- 1:27:35the winners get $5,000, the losers get $2,500.
- 1:27:38This next two, I'd say the next 20 minutes is going to be rather severe.
- 1:27:42Charlie Waters is holding for a friend. Herrera, Herrera boots it up and it is good.
- 1:27:46Well, the score is ASC 13 to NFC 7. There's a timeout on the field.
- 1:27:51Now this for Budweiser.
- 1:27:55When do you think Budweiser
- 1:27:59Whenever the moment is right for a great fear
- 1:28:02When do you think Budweiser
- 1:28:05Whenever the good times are moving too right here
- 1:28:08After the work is done why you still having fun
- 1:28:12Anytime's the right time to say it
- 1:28:14When do you think Budweiser
- 1:28:18Buds will be here for any time at all
- 1:28:25When do you think Budweiser
- 1:28:29The time when it's right to tell the world what you're thinking
- 1:28:32Cause when you say Budweiser
- 1:28:35The number one beer is what we drinkin'
- 1:28:39After the work is done why you still having fun
- 1:28:42The king of fear just waiting for your call
- 1:28:44When you say Budweiser
- 1:28:48You said it all
- 1:28:50Sanheiser, Boyce, St. Louis.
- 1:28:5346 yards, 9 plays, 4 minutes of holding on to the football and the NFC is on the scoreboard.
- 1:29:00Alright, Sam Huff, great linebacker and a very fine broadcaster for Mutual in the booth with us.
- 1:29:06Sam, the NFC is back in it.
- 1:29:08Well, they're starting to come back. That time Pat Hayden moved the club very well
- 1:29:11with some real fancy running from Chuck Borman and I think as you said that
- 1:29:14I was going to be a real barn burner from here on out.
- 1:29:17Alright, Lindsay, ready for the kickoff?
- 1:29:19Tony Lenhardt is ready to put it up and he's got Billy White shoes, Johnson deep flanks on one side by Pruitt and the other side by Lynn Swan.
- 1:29:25So Lenhardt puts it up and it's over to Pruitt's side of the field.
- 1:29:28Pruitt's got it up to the 11 yard line to the 15, to the 20, 25, to the 30.
- 1:29:32And he's pulled down at the 30 yard line. So right there the NFC will start first and 10 at their own 30 yard line.
- 1:29:39The NFC is leading 13 to 7.
- 1:29:42Harvey Martin was the man downfield to make the tackle.
- 1:29:47When you look at the South Star alignment, Sam, you've just got to believe the NFC has an excited advantage, seven all-pros.
- 1:29:54Well, they have an awful lot of speed in those outside receivers and the quarterbacking makes a big difference in this game, you know.
- 1:30:00Pat Hayden is a young quarterback and of course Kenny Stabler in there can certainly make a difference with his team.
- 1:30:05So I think quarterbacking so far is the difference.
- 1:30:08Bob Greasy now waiting for the snap at quarterback for the AFC with the running back split first and 10 the ball across the 30 yard line.
- 1:30:15Greasy drops back, throws right and diving attempt incomplete across at the 36 yard line.
- 1:30:21So it'll be second on and 10 yards to go at the 31 yard line.
- 1:30:25It was Lydell Mitchell for whom the pass was intended.
- 1:30:28We have 8 minutes 39 seconds remaining to be played in the third quarter.
- 1:30:3213 to 7, a touchdown now and an extra point. You could have a whole different ballgame.
- 1:30:38One thing that's very important is both these clubs have only been working together for one week
- 1:30:42and that just shows you the kind of talent that you have down there to get the kind of performance out of both teams with one week to practice.
- 1:30:48Greasy again waiting for the snap of the running back split and wide receivers left and right.
- 1:30:53Second down play coming, Greasy now handing it off and it is a move by Franco Harris across the 30 but he can't go anywhere.
- 1:31:00It's no game. Franco Harris is dropped at the 31 yard line.
- 1:31:04It's going to be third and 10. Alan Ellis from the Chicago Bears up to make the tackle.
- 1:31:09Ellis was the man there. Sam, I got to believe this might have been a real old barn burner in the fourth quarter.
- 1:31:15Well, I think it is. Both these teams, you know, the difference between winning and losing is $2,500.
- 1:31:20And whenever you're down here for a week, $2,500 for these guys can go pretty quick.
- 1:31:24They're not the biggest chippers in the world. They just like to spend a little bit of money when it means something.
- 1:31:29$2,500 to buy Harvey Martin a good meal.
- 1:31:32Sam Huff played in this game and he was played every year at Los Angeles and he used to give medals to the players who got to the stadium.
- 1:31:38It's clear and 10. Greasy now dropping back to set it up.
- 1:31:43And to lose incomplete and find his intended receiver, he was hit immediately by Randy White.
- 1:31:48White was sitting in his lap. And so it's going to be fourth down coming up.
- 1:31:53However, there is a penalty marker. Check it out. A penalty marker. Or is there?
- 1:32:00I thought it was across the way at about the 40-yard line, but maybe it was just one drop.
- 1:32:05Apparently not because the punting unit has come on to the AFC and that means that Ray Guy is coming out to put one in orbit.
- 1:32:12That's the nicest kid to talk to, I think, that I've talked to this year. Randy White.
- 1:32:16Nice to talk to, but I want to tell you, not nice to play with. He just lured the boom on Bob Greasy.
- 1:32:23Ray Guy back and Eddie Brown is in center safety to receive the kick standing on his own 30-yard line.
- 1:32:29AFC 13, the NFC 7. There's the snap and it's taken by Guy.
- 1:32:36High trajectory kick as usual, it's over to the left side and it's taken at the 35th.
- 1:32:40Penalty marker. Penalty marker is dropped and he goes out of bounds at the 36-yard line, but there's a marker to be checked out.
- 1:32:47Tony Green with the man who's got him across the sideline marker.
- 1:32:54Green knocked him out across the way over there. That flag was flying actually just after he made the catch there.
- 1:33:03Penalty is going to be against the NFC. The AFC is being consulted now to exercise an option.
- 1:33:14And they're bringing it back.
- 1:33:20Line of scrimmage was 31. And a 5-yard penalty moves it up to the 36-yard line now.
- 1:33:34Delay, 12 men on the field, defense, 4th down.
- 1:33:38There you have it, 12 men on the field, which is delay of game against the NFC.
- 1:33:43That's how you return a kick, you put 12 men on the field.
- 1:33:46That's a little bit too many. Well, he'd like to play with 12. Of course, they do that up in Canada, but this is United States football.
- 1:33:52Well, they played a game right here on the Canadian rules just a week or so ago and they haven't got it straightened out yet.
- 1:33:57Ray Guy back now takes the snap, puts it up. This is the one that's snow on it.
- 1:34:02And Eddie Brown, he's got it at the 13, running laterally to the right for the 15, turns up for the 20, but he is nailed at the 21-yard line.
- 1:34:12That's a timeout on the field with the score, ASD 13 and SD 7, and now this word.
- 1:34:17Hey, Orville, what did I tell you?
- 1:34:21You were right, Wilbur. This Continental Air Line 727 is some airplane.
- 1:34:24Yeah, look how spacious it is.
- 1:34:26Well, nice going, brother. You just broke the seat.
- 1:34:28Now, all these middle seats fold down to give you more elbow room.
- 1:34:31Hey, Wilbur, our plane has got some things even Continental doesn't have.
- 1:34:34Oh?
- 1:34:35Yeah, like plenty of fresh air for our passengers.
- 1:34:37Fresh air? Our last two passengers got windburned.
- 1:34:40Uh-huh. Look at all these exposed wires. We don't have that.
- 1:34:43Orville, that's Continental's free stereo entertainment.
- 1:34:46Oh, oh.
- 1:34:47Orville, what are you doing?
- 1:34:48Sir, may I help you with something?
- 1:34:50Is this where you store the parachute, ma'am?
- 1:34:51No, those are overhead storage compartments for your carry-on luggage.
- 1:34:55Oh, I see. Hey, Wilbur, what does she do?
- 1:34:57She's a Continental hostess.
- 1:34:59Let's get one for our plane.
- 1:35:00Oh, sit down.
- 1:35:01If you can't fly Continental.
- 1:35:04You may have to fly with Orville and Wilbur.
- 1:35:07The Continental Spaces 727 nonstop to Albuquerque and direct to El Paso and San Antonio.
- 1:35:13Reservations. Call your travel agent. Company Travel Department or Continental.
- 1:35:19Congratulations to Coach C.M. Newton and the University of Alabama tonight.
- 1:35:23Alabama knocked off the number one ranked Kentucky Wildcats 78 to 62 in college basketball.
- 1:35:29So Alabama victorious over Kentucky tonight in college basketball.
- 1:35:33And in our booth right now, Gil Brandt, Director of Personnel for the World Champion Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:35:38You've got a few boys down there playing in this game, Gil.
- 1:35:41Yes, Al. We have seven and the eighth Roger Starbuck was supposed to be in the game,
- 1:35:45was hurt in the Super Bowl game and was unable to play.
- 1:35:47And I think they're all doing an excellent job.
- 1:35:49All right. Here we go. The NFC now having, of course, the National Championship team, the Dallas Cowboys, in control.
- 1:35:57Lindsay?
- 1:35:58First and 10 at their own 21 yard line. Pat Hayden's quarterbacking and they faked the handoff to Foreman.
- 1:36:03Gets it out incomplete in the last flat and so it's going to be second out in 10 yards to go at the 21 yard line.
- 1:36:10Trying to get it to Metcalfe out there in the last flat after faking the handoff to Foreman.
- 1:36:15Randy Gratishaw covering out there in the middle linebacker.
- 1:36:18I don't know if I was Terry Metcalfe's size, about 180 pounds, and I went out there and had a ball on the top of my fingers.
- 1:36:24I'm not so sure, Gillbrandt, that I'd catch it if Randy Gratishaw were closing ground.
- 1:36:29You know, the most amazing thing is that Randy Gratishaw is playing tonight.
- 1:36:32He was hurt in the Super Bowl game and carried off the field and back playing tonight.
- 1:36:37Second out in 10 yards to go at the 21.
- 1:36:39The running back just missed that last one by Ray Garland.
- 1:36:41Today he was at 51 yard.
- 1:36:43Foreman spins his way up to the 25 yard line.
- 1:36:46Picks up four on the play where it'll be third down and six.
- 1:36:48Gratishaw again coming in on the tackle.
- 1:36:50You know, I think that represents what Gillbrandt is talking about, a change in attitude about the Pro Bowl,
- 1:36:54because, Gill, I think you'll agree we went through a period where ballplayers didn't appear to be all that interested in playing in the Pro Bowl,
- 1:37:00and now once again they are.
- 1:37:02Yes, that's correct. I know Roger was extremely disappointed that he couldn't play in the game,
- 1:37:06and the feeling is that way through the league. Everybody wants to play.
- 1:37:09Third down in 10 yards, six yards to go. The ball is at the 25 yard line.
- 1:37:14That hasn't failed quarterbacking for the NFC.
- 1:37:18Straight drop this time. He sets it up.
- 1:37:20Humps once, goes left.
- 1:37:21Down at second at the 35 yard line and up to the 37 yard line.
- 1:37:25That's going to be a first and 10 for the NFC.
- 1:37:28Casanova coming in on the tackle along with Mike Haynes.
- 1:37:31They put a sandwich move on him there and out there.
- 1:37:34There was no peanut butter on that one, boy. When they hit, they hit out there.
- 1:37:39So the NFC trailing by six points in the ballgame.
- 1:37:42As a first and 10, they have it at the 37.
- 1:37:46Fighting back, Sir Spitters Hayden slowly comes up to the line.
- 1:37:50Ready to take the snap. Metcalf left and Foreman right in this set.
- 1:37:55And it's Metcalf coming to the right side, trying to get outside the turn-up field.
- 1:37:59And he gets to the 40, has to drive, and it stops just across the 40 yard line.
- 1:38:03Picked up only three on the right side, on the play to the right side, third, second, and seventh.
- 1:38:07Tommy Casanova had come up over there. He was making the move on it.
- 1:38:10Little metal grave puts a block on him. Blank him back in.
- 1:38:13Give him a little bit of a running room there. They couldn't get outside.
- 1:38:16The runner couldn't get outside on that.
- 1:38:18I've got to wonder, Gil Brand, with a young football team like the Dallas Cowboys,
- 1:38:21you fellas just might have the regime, the dynasty that they said couldn't be rebuilt.
- 1:38:26I don't believe that. I think it's just how hard you work and how lucky you are as far as injuries are concerned,
- 1:38:31whether you repeat or not.
- 1:38:33Now Hayden handing it out to Foreman.
- 1:38:35Foreman again spins his way up to the 44 yard line, taking the full pivot.
- 1:38:38Picked up four yards on the play. It'll be third and three.
- 1:38:41The fan has Dallas quietened down into the last time I looked in on the newsreels.
- 1:38:45Dallas people win a state of high jubilation over having won the Super Bowl.
- 1:38:49Does it think quieting down there any yet?
- 1:38:51Well, I think they've come back down to earth, but we're just thankful that our fans are of that type.
- 1:38:56It's a great lift to your ball club.
- 1:38:59Well, it was a great year for the Cowboys and for their fans, certainly.
- 1:39:02Third down and three yards to go for the NFC here.
- 1:39:05Running back to a split, dropping back is Hayden on one throw's left.
- 1:39:09Metcalfe, and he's got it out of bounds across the 50 yard line.
- 1:39:13And Tony Green ran him out over there.
- 1:39:16At the first and 10, it's going to be brought to the inbound marker
- 1:39:19and spotted near the 49 yard line, perhaps the 48.
- 1:39:23Phil Grant, the last time I saw your general manager and then president of the club, Tex Ram,
- 1:39:28he had a smile on his face like he'd just got an honor for 177,000 season tickets for next year.
- 1:39:34I don't think Tex will lose that smile until about next August
- 1:39:37when we start playing those preseason games.
- 1:39:40First and 10 now for the NFC. They've moved them all into AFC territory.
- 1:39:45That Hayden quarterbacking them.
- 1:39:48Leaves this one on the ground and it's Foreman again.
- 1:39:50Fires up the middle and gets just to the 46 yard line.
- 1:39:53He picked up two where it'll be second out on eight at the 46.
- 1:39:56You know, Lindsay, Chuck Foreman now, when he goes into that line, he goes in spinning like a...
- 1:40:00He reminds you a great deal of a pickpocket on Broadway, doesn't he?
- 1:40:03He was in a hurry to get it and get gone.
- 1:40:05I don't know about the pickpockets on Broadway. I never got away from one of those like that.
- 1:40:10Four minutes and 26 seconds remaining to be played in the third quarter with the AFC leading 13 to 7.
- 1:40:16Tampa Stadium and Tampa, Florida. Wide receivers left and right.
- 1:40:19Metcash in the right side. Foreman in the left side.
- 1:40:21Pat Hayden dropping back, takes a left.
- 1:40:23Throws left over near the sideline. It's incomplete there.
- 1:40:26Right at the 40 yard line, an incompletion will make it third and eighth.
- 1:40:30Mel Gray, the intended receiver, could not hang on. It's third and eighth.
- 1:40:33Mike Haynes was over there on the coverage, but that was just too high. It was off the fingertips there.
- 1:40:38Pat Hayden, Jim Hart, both sharing the quarterbacking duties.
- 1:40:43And with four minutes and ten seconds left to go in the third quarter, the AFC leading 13 to 7, the NFC closing ground.
- 1:40:50Here they come out of the huddle once again and up to the line.
- 1:40:53Mel Gray coming to a wide right. They've still got Metcash and Foreman in there as the setbacks for Pat Hayden.
- 1:40:59Third down play coming here now, third and long.
- 1:41:02Hayden dropping back.
- 1:41:04Such-and-goes law, and it is intercepted at the 35 yard line.
- 1:41:09Mike Haynes, the vibe room, goes out of bounds at the 42.
- 1:41:13The AFC gets the football at the 42 yard line.
- 1:41:16That was great, great quickness, Gil Brand. He just stole that football.
- 1:41:20But hey, as they switch sides here now with 4-0-3 remaining in the third quarter with the score, the AFC 13, the NFC 7, time out on the field.
- 1:41:29So now this for the Teamsters and Sears.
- 1:41:32Are you getting your money's worth these days?
- 1:41:35If the answer is no, consider what you're missing if you do not belong to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
- 1:41:40Best wages guaranteed, no cost pension, health and welfare protection.
- 1:41:45That and much more add up to real family security.
- 1:41:49You can't get more for your money than the Teamsters do.
- 1:41:52Now you know why. They're the nation's largest labor union.
- 1:41:56Teamsters, 2.3 million families strong and growing.
- 1:42:00Sears brings you a summer weather forecast in January.
- 1:42:03Temperatures to hit the mid-90s for some hot muggy days.
- 1:42:05Get a jump on hot weather now by shopping Sears preseason room air conditioner sale.
- 1:42:09Now while temperatures are down, so are prices on 17 Kenmore models on bedroom, multi-room and large capacity units.
- 1:42:15Save 20 to 70 dollars and only 5 dollars hold your unit on layaway until April 15.
- 1:42:20Shop Sears air conditioner sale now and save 20 to 70 dollars on Kenmore, solid as Sears.
- 1:42:26And a real scorching tomorrow as the heat wave continues to punish the area.
- 1:42:30Next Saturday I'll be on my way to Honolulu, Hawaii.
- 1:42:35And the following week we'll be broadcasting, covering the Hawaiian Open Golf Championship over many of these mutual stations.
- 1:42:42It'll be my pleasure to be at command with the mutual golf crew as we get the first golf tournament of the year underway.
- 1:42:48If you like it caddy, I'll be available.
- 1:42:50First and two at the 42 yard line now, the AFC with the football.
- 1:42:54Dropping back to pass it is Bob Greasy, but he has dropped back there.
- 1:43:00Bob Greasy dropped back and Claude Humphrey got to him, the big man from Atlanta.
- 1:43:05Greasy did the smartest thing he could possibly do.
- 1:43:08I think he might have seen out of the corner of his eye Humphrey closing ground at an angle.
- 1:43:12And Greasy went down and Humphrey went right over the top of him.
- 1:43:15So it is second out and 17 yards to go with the ball back at the 35 yard line.
- 1:43:20Three minutes 57 seconds left to play in the third quarter.
- 1:43:23AFC 13, NFC 7.
- 1:43:26The Pro Bowl game in Tampa, Florida.
- 1:43:30Here they come now sending wide receivers to the left and right.
- 1:43:36Lydell Mitchell, Franco Harris on the split running backs.
- 1:43:41Leave this one on the ground and it is Lydell Mitchell who is hitting up there across the 35 to the 36.
- 1:43:46Jeff Seaman, middle linebacker made the tackle again in the yard.
- 1:43:50So it's going to be third down and 16 yards to go.
- 1:43:52Big lad from Minnesota there in the middle.
- 1:43:54He's playing now instead of Bill Berge.
- 1:43:56It's either going to be Seaman or Berge in the middle as they might man as they call them there, the middle linebacker.
- 1:44:01Seaman comes up very strong on the run.
- 1:44:03He's very difficult to fake out.
- 1:44:06If any problem at all, Seaman may have his problems on the deep drop on pass coverage, but he can certainly cover the runner.
- 1:44:12Kenny Burr goes to a wide right and that more to a wide left.
- 1:44:15Greasy dropping back now.
- 1:44:17Steps up and steps up again.
- 1:44:19Hits just as he turned it loose.
- 1:44:20It's incomplete at the 39 yard line.
- 1:44:23He's trying to get it to Franco Harris.
- 1:44:24It was in and out of the hands of Harris.
- 1:44:26Greasy was hit just as he turned the ball loose by Larry Brooks and Claude Humphrey.
- 1:44:32Point me fourth down.
- 1:44:33The putting unit comes up.
- 1:44:35They really put the pressure on there, Lynn.
- 1:44:38Humphrey and Brooks went after Greasy again.
- 1:44:40He did the boulder whack.
- 1:44:42He pulled it up very, very quickly.
- 1:44:44And Humphrey and Brooks, I think, banged helmets there as they went after him.
- 1:44:47I think they did and they were slow getting up.
- 1:44:49Now, Ray Guy is back.
- 1:44:50This appreciative crowd last time was applauding while the ball was in the air.
- 1:44:54As he hung one of those patented Ray Guy high trajectory kicks up, Eddie Brown is in the middle to receive the punch.
- 1:45:00Ray Guy now gets it, puts it up.
- 1:45:02Another high spiraling kick. Brown's waiting at the 24.
- 1:45:05Drops it, dribbles it, picks it up, goes to the left, 25.
- 1:45:08Pendley Marcus thrown.
- 1:45:09Pendley Marcus thrown as he has stopped at the 27 yard line.
- 1:45:12Could have been a clip on the turn there.
- 1:45:14Now, I believe Thompson was pitched but was pushed by Lawrence.
- 1:45:18He had a shot at the runner there at Brown.
- 1:45:21And Thompson was down on the punt coverage.
- 1:45:24And Lawrence came up behind him, gave him a shot.
- 1:45:27And so it suddenly will be again the NFC.
- 1:45:34Got to step it off and move that ball back now.
- 1:45:40Betty Wyatt, the referee, paces it back to just outside the 14 yard line.
- 1:45:47Clipping number 23, receiving team.
- 1:45:51Ronald Larson, clipping on the run back, the punt, incidentally by Ray Guy, was a 40 yarder.
- 1:45:57It is first and 10.
- 1:46:02AFC is leading in the ball game by a score of 13 to 7.
- 1:46:09Now the ball has been moved back to the 12 yard line
- 1:46:14as the officials get their arithmetic straightened out.
- 1:46:18And it's spotted squarely on the 12.
- 1:46:21Here they come now, Pat Hayden, the quarterback.
- 1:46:26Metcalf and Foreman is running back.
- 1:46:30Gets it to Metcalf and he is jitterbugging his way up to the 15 yard line.
- 1:46:34It's again a 3. It'll be second out in 7. Robert Brazil in to make the tackle.
- 1:46:38Also up there to help him on that play with Luke Keltcher again.
- 1:46:41Keltcher replacing Mike Barnes at the left tackle on that 4-3 defense.
- 1:46:46The clock has wound down now to 2 minutes 25 seconds.
- 1:46:49Remaining to be played in the third quarter.
- 1:46:51AFC still has a 6-point lead in this Pro Bowl game.
- 1:46:55Members of the winning team get $5,000 each.
- 1:46:58And members of the losing team get $2,500 each.
- 1:47:02Pat Hayden waits for the snap.
- 1:47:04Gets the football. Gets it to Foreman.
- 1:47:06Goes to the left side, inside a block thrown out there by Metcalf.
- 1:47:09And he goes to the 23 yard line.
- 1:47:12Trying to get to the first down 6 and they'll take a long look at this one now.
- 1:47:17Here's Robert Brazil again in on the tackle and it's the first in 10.
- 1:47:21First down for the NFC as they retain possession and keep the drive alive.
- 1:47:25Little Terry Metcalf as you pointed out with a key block on the play.
- 1:47:28He is so quick. He got out there and he stung Tom Jackson.
- 1:47:32I think Jackson might have been off balance because when he hit Tom, he laid him on the seat of his trousers.
- 1:47:37Here they come now.
- 1:47:38Hayden again brings them up with the running backs well split and wide receivers left and right.
- 1:47:42Foreman's in the left side. Metcalf's in the right side.
- 1:47:44Hayden is dropping back in looking.
- 1:47:46Throwes this one. And it is complete up to the 40 yard line.
- 1:47:50Gathered in there by Jackson. Harold Jackson with his first catch of the night.
- 1:47:54He had 48 catches with fourths in the National Football Conference.
- 1:47:58Or the Los Angeles Rounds. First and 10 at the 40.
- 1:48:02I'll tell you one thing. Lamar Parish knew when he hit him.
- 1:48:05He hit him so hard that he shook him up a little bit.
- 1:48:07He's going to the sidelines. We got a replacement coming in for him.
- 1:48:10Moving in to replace Lamar is Louis Wright, the great cornerback from Denver.
- 1:48:15First down and 10 yards to go. NFC at their own 40 yard line.
- 1:48:1853 seconds left in the third quarter.
- 1:48:20Running backs are split with Metcalf and the right side.
- 1:48:22Foreman on the left for Pat Hayden, the road scholar.
- 1:48:25Hand it off this time and it is Metcalf just across the 40 to the 41 yard line.
- 1:48:30We pause briefly for station identification.
- 1:48:32This is Mutual, your news and sports radio network.
- 1:48:35Your 24 hour news voice, KCBS San Francisco.
- 1:48:42Lindsay, I can't help but chuckle a little bit because little Terry Metcalf just scooted past Lou Kelcher.
- 1:48:48Kelcher reached out and got the back of his jersey, jerked him down.
- 1:48:51Second down and nine yards to go at the 41, 18 seconds left in the third quarter.
- 1:48:55AFC 13 and FC 7. Greasy back now.
- 1:48:59Takes a look, scrambles out of the pocket, running right.
- 1:49:01Still alive, goes back to the left side.
- 1:49:04Running pub, looks and is stopped back at the 31 yard line by Randy Gratishaw.
- 1:49:09Gratishaw dropped 32 seconds on the clock.
- 1:49:12They made him to be played in the third quarter.
- 1:49:14There's the mark of a great linebacker, a tremendous linebacker, Randy Gratishaw.
- 1:49:19Now they were chasing Pat Hayden all over the place, trying to get to him.
- 1:49:23And those big linemen, Carl Bacon was in on that, Lou Kelcher, those, trying to get to him to make the tackle.
- 1:49:29He was scrambling, he was rolling out to the left.
- 1:49:31Gratishaw had made the deep drop on that.
- 1:49:34He realized that they needed help and he came up and made a tremendous play.
- 1:49:38Randy Gratishaw, truly an all-pro and linebacker if there ever was one.
- 1:49:42That's the end of the third quarter with the score AFC 13 and FC 7.
- 1:49:46Now this for Las Vegas and GM Trucks.
- 1:49:49The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority presents Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy.
- 1:49:53I thought we might vacation in Las Vegas this year, Charlie.
- 1:49:56You know it's the entertainment capital of the world.
- 1:49:58Yeah, yeah, I can hardly wait to see those beautiful Las Vegas showgirls.
- 1:50:02But there's more to do in Las Vegas than sit by the stage and watch girls.
- 1:50:06Don't forget there are things to do in the daytime, too.
- 1:50:08Sure, and sit by the pool and watch the girls.
- 1:50:11All right, all right.
- 1:50:12Besides swimming, there's golf, tennis, and being out in that clear desert air makes one more, well, handsome.
- 1:50:18Oh, yeah? Did you ever see a camel?
- 1:50:20Hey, how will we get there, Bergen?
- 1:50:22Well, the Las Vegas airport is just on the edge of town, so I thought we would fly.
- 1:50:27I'll fly when I get there.
- 1:50:29Oh, there are more than 38,000 beautifully decorated rooms.
- 1:50:34Speaking of beautiful decorations, you know, I wonder how I do get a date with a showgirl.
- 1:50:38Well, let's call our travel agent right now for reservations.
- 1:50:41Yeah, tell him to reserve me a blonde.
- 1:50:44Girls, always girls. I hope so.
- 1:50:47Like any married couple, my wife and I have our differences.
- 1:50:50But when she wanted a new car and I wanted a pickup, we settled on a GMC Cavallero.
- 1:50:56The front half looks like the car she wanted, but the back half, as the six-foot said, liked the pickup I wanted.
- 1:51:02Now when we argue about who gets to use our new GMC Cavallero, we settle that, too.
- 1:51:07We ride in her half and carry our gear in mind.
- 1:51:10It goes suckin' like a GMC. It goes suckin' like a GMC.
- 1:51:17With 15 minutes of playing time remaining, the AFC All-Star team leads the NFC All-Stars 13-7 in the Pro Bowl.
- 1:51:26Ladies and gentlemen, as the National Football Conference team breaks the huddle and comes up to the line at the 30-yard line,
- 1:51:32we'll tell you what a great pleasure in a few moments it is to be bringing football your way.
- 1:51:37Third down and 19 yards to go, Pat Hayden there. The ball hits the 31-yard line. Hayden drops back.
- 1:51:42Pumps wants on his drop back at the 20-yard line. He wanted to go long up the middle. Had Harold Jackson down there,
- 1:51:48but was dropped at the 20 by Curly Culp of the Houston Oilers, and the putting in it comes on for the NFC.
- 1:51:54They could not move. Louis Coulter and Curly Culp.
- 1:51:59Yes, sir, Mrs. Coulter's Curly Head boy was in there then. The big boy from the Houston Oilers came boring through there.
- 1:52:06The president of our network, Mr. C. Hepburn Little, and every one of us is mutual pleased to be bringing you
- 1:52:11the football picture as we have. Monday Night Football, Notre Dame football, the playoff games,
- 1:52:15Sunday football across America and around the world on American Forces Radio. We're just happy to have you with us.
- 1:52:22John Jay is back in deep on formation. Billy White Shoes Johnson is centered deep to receive the putt.
- 1:52:27It has put up a higher trajectory kick by Jay. Johnson moves over, takes it at the 31-yard line,
- 1:52:33and comes back to the 35. And it has returned across the 40, and it is Bruyne who has the football.
- 1:52:42Bruyne returned the football across the 40, and we may have a penalty marker on the play.
- 1:52:48Would you believe that on that tackle, it was Chuck Foreman who made the tackle?
- 1:52:54Well, in an all-star game, you get some very strange things, and that's what we just got.
- 1:52:58Chuck Foreman on the special team. All I can say is that if Bud's listening in up there in Minnesota,
- 1:53:04maybe I got the wrong number, Bud, but it looked like Chuck Foreman making the tackle.
- 1:53:09First down and ten yards to go, and the ball is on the 24-yard line now on the penalty.
- 1:53:15Illegal use of the hands, number 40, receiving team.
- 1:53:19Illegal use of the hands on Mike Haynes on the AFC, puts the ball back,
- 1:53:26and a first and ten at the 24-yard line. A 49-yard play for James.
- 1:53:34So the AFC is in possession once again.
- 1:53:37Stabler handing the ball off, they leave it on the ground after the 27-yard line.
- 1:53:41Again, a three-yard on the plate, it'll be second down and seven.
- 1:53:44Kenny Stabler back in there at the controls.
- 1:53:47Jeff Steven and Harvey Martin came in on the last tackle.
- 1:53:51We are in the fourth quarter and the AFC is leading by a score of 13 to 7.
- 1:53:57Now the one thought and that defensive team's mind out there, Martin, Brooks, Zilam, Youngblood, Berge, that group, get the football back.
- 1:54:05Stabler brings it up there once again.
- 1:54:09Hands it off to Pruitt, and Pruitt tries the left side, and Greg Pruitt is stopped at the 30-yard line.
- 1:54:14Where he picked up three yards, it'll be third and four.
- 1:54:19I'll tell you, tonight is going to be a little difficult for our judges, McEwen and Snyder and Fox down there, to pick our La-Z-Boy winners.
- 1:54:26The offensive and defensive players, again, in this ball game, will receive a beautiful La-Z-Boy chair.
- 1:54:32It's a gorgeous chair and it is wonderful to recline in, believe me. I have one at home.
- 1:54:37Two-pronged, four to the left side, third down and four yards to go. Van Eeghen and Pruitt to the setbacks.
- 1:54:43Or Kenny Stabler, and Stabler is dropping back.
- 1:54:49It's patted down right at the line of scrimmage by Randy White.
- 1:54:52He's got a big hand up there and the putting in it's coming on the AFC.
- 1:54:55We'll have to give up the football. Great guys coming in to punt it.
- 1:54:59Randy White just put that big meat hook up there and knocked it down.
- 1:55:02You know, he's some kind of a guy to talk to. I asked him, I said, Randy, you had a great, great year.
- 1:55:07Here you are, one of the great defensive football players. I said, you got a fellow named Harvey Martin next to you.
- 1:55:12He said, I'm most fortunate. I have the greatest defensive end, the greatest defensive player of the year playing next to me.
- 1:55:19He could be right, too. Ray Guy's back there standing at the 15-yard line.
- 1:55:23Thanks to Snap, Guy steps up, boots the football.
- 1:55:27Brown is moving over and is going to let it hit. There'll be no return.
- 1:55:30It's going to go out of bounds at the 37.
- 1:55:32There's a timeout with the score AFC 13, NFC 7, and now this word.
- 1:55:36Behind the great names, there's a great car.
- 1:55:43Why do so many Cadillac owners consider their automobile an investment?
- 1:55:47Because Cadillac owners know that over the years, Cadillac has consistently retained a higher percentage of its initial purchase price than any other U.S. luxury car make.
- 1:55:57That Cadillac consistently has had the highest retail value of any U.S. luxury car make.
- 1:56:03They know that once they've bought that first Cadillac, it's easy to stay with Cadillac.
- 1:56:09That's total Cadillac value.
- 1:56:11And that's the reason why year after year, more Cadillac owners trade Cadillac for Cadillac, giving it the highest repeat ownership of any U.S. luxury make.
- 1:56:21Cadillac owners know the meaning of total Cadillac value. So should you.
- 1:56:26Behind the great names, a great car.
- 1:56:30Test drive a 1978 Cadillac at your Cadillac dealer today.
- 1:56:37Twelve minutes and 46 seconds remaining in this fourth quarter of the Pro Bowl game.
- 1:56:42The AFC with an early 13-0 lead. The NFC closing ground 13-7. The score at the moment.
- 1:56:48And, Lindsay, I still think this game is up for grabs.
- 1:56:51I think you're right. And now the running backs that have come into the ballgame are McCutchen and Payton.
- 1:56:56For the NFC, they trailed by six points, so they'll try to move them off in their own 37, which is pretty good field position here in the fourth quarter.
- 1:57:03Twelve minutes, 46 seconds left to play.
- 1:57:06So here comes the blue-clad NFC up the line, and Jim Hart of the St. Louis Cardinals in that quarterback now.
- 1:57:11Hart has taken over as quarterback for the stretch drive for the NFC.
- 1:57:16Running backs are well split.
- 1:57:18And it is Hart now, taking the handoff and pumping, and it's complete.
- 1:57:22It is taken by Billy Joe Dupree, and the big tight end is across the 45.
- 1:57:26Being pushed back, it'll be marked at the 47-yard line. Jack Lambert, middle linebacker, in the back to tackle.
- 1:57:31Maybe a first down. It's very close.
- 1:57:33Jim Hart just drilled that one right in there about waist-high to Dupree, who grabbed it, doubled over.
- 1:57:39And just as he doubled over, big chap from Jack Lambert piled into him.
- 1:57:43They're going to take the chain out and measure for the possible first down.
- 1:57:47Matter of fact, they'll take it all the way across the field on the spot that was marked on the far side.
- 1:57:51The chain is being extended now, and it is going to be just inchy short.
- 1:58:01It'll be second down, inchy short.
- 1:58:04You know, Lindsay, you've had the opportunity since I have to extend congratulations to the University of Notre Dame
- 1:58:12because you were there for the Notre Dame-Texas battle that eventually won the national championship for the Fighting Irish.
- 1:58:18But today, I had a chance to talk to the great athletic director, Moose Krause, up at Notre Dame
- 1:58:24and to send along personal congratulations because, of course, Mutual and many of these stations carrying tonight's game
- 1:58:30carries the Notre Dame football schedule.
- 1:58:32National champions for 1977, the University of Notre Dame.
- 1:58:36Indeed they are. Second down and short yardage here now. Close alignment.
- 1:58:41Jim Hart, the quarterback, double tight end. In there now for the NFC.
- 1:58:45And this is Walter Payton hitting in for a first and 10 continues to drive inside the 50 and on down to the 48 yard line.
- 1:58:51First and 10, the NFC.
- 1:58:53It's in AFC territory. Louis Wright finally brought him down.
- 1:58:57Louis Wright finally brought him down. And I'll tell you, Bill Thompson, you won't see this very often.
- 1:59:01Billy Thompson came up and met him first.
- 1:59:03And Payton broke the tackle that Thompson threw on him and gained about three yards extra.
- 1:59:08That is a first down and 10 yards to go. The ball is by the near the 47 yard line.
- 1:59:12Jim Hart again sends wide receivers to the left and to the right.
- 1:59:16Payton and McCutchen are the running backs in there for Hart.
- 1:59:20He is handing it off and it's on the left side.
- 1:59:24And it is Payton who has stopped at the 42 yard line.
- 1:59:28Mike Haynes brought him down.
- 1:59:30Walter Payton picked up about five yards on the play.
- 1:59:33Speaking of Notre Dame, one of the great disappointments of my life occurred this week because of the snow storm in New York.
- 1:59:39I couldn't get out of New York on Friday where I was scheduled to go out for the Newt Rockne dinner in Chicago
- 1:59:44and to receive the Van Patrick Award for excellence in broadcasting.
- 1:59:48I visited a lot of old friends, George Conner, Johnny Latner, and Ziggy Zaratsky, all of us.
- 1:59:54I couldn't get out of Manhattan.
- 1:59:56I understand they had you in the refrigerator.
- 1:59:58I had to phone it in as a matter of fact. Second down.
- 2:00:01How do you phone in an award?
- 2:00:03Well, I phone in an acceptance. Second down and five yards to go.
- 2:00:07Now Haynes is jumping back out of the left foot on the screen and it's Payton.
- 2:00:11Payton is at the 35. That's one they've been saving.
- 2:00:13He's at the 31 yard line for a first and tenth.
- 2:00:17That's one you put in an all-star game and say, well, we won't use this one but want to save it for the right time.
- 2:00:22I'll tell you one thing. It was a great block one-on-one there.
- 2:00:25Doug Frantz, he really held the block. He moved Curly Cubs back a good five yards.
- 2:00:30You can pack one up on the door of Doug Frantz in this final game of the 1977 season.
- 2:00:36We have 10 minutes 44 seconds remaining to be played in the Pro Bowl.
- 2:00:39The AFC is leading 13 to 7 but the NFC is driving.
- 2:00:43They have it first and 10 now at the AFC 31 yard line.
- 2:00:46Yum Hart brings them up.
- 2:00:48Now they loosen up on the right side. Drew Pearson moving out over there.
- 2:00:51Running backs are evened up. There's a wide receiver to the left side as well.
- 2:00:55Hart now. That's the handoff to McCutchen just in time and he drives to the 27 yard line.
- 2:01:00It is Mike Barnes in to make the tackle at the 27 again.
- 2:01:03A four-mastis second down and six yards to go.
- 2:01:05Jack Lambert was up there to help him. They put the pitchers on.
- 2:01:08Barnes and Jack Lambert just put the pitcher on him.
- 2:01:11But that's good yardage now. They're moving the football.
- 2:01:14There's four big yards. He just cut off there.
- 2:01:16Second down and six. The NFC now can smell blood.
- 2:01:19They know if they can get the touchdown the point afterwards send them ahead.
- 2:01:23So they split the running backs and they send Drew Pearson part of the right side.
- 2:01:26Second out six yards to go at the 27 yard line.
- 2:01:29Yum Hart of the St. Louis Cardinals is waiting for the snap.
- 2:01:32He's dropping straight back. Takes a look.
- 2:01:34And wanted to throw in the direction of Pearson.
- 2:01:36He gets it up field incomplete with the tackle hanging on.
- 2:01:39It was John Dutton hanging on to him.
- 2:01:42He managed to get it up field some 15 or 20 yards to avoid the penalty for grounding.
- 2:01:46But it's an incomplete third and six at the 27.
- 2:01:50I'll tell you Jim got that football off under the worst kind of conditions
- 2:01:54because big John Dutton was wrapped around his knees trying to dump him to wrestle him down.
- 2:02:00And Mike Barnes the big tackle over there on the same side that Dutton plays on was coming in at him like a locomotive.
- 2:02:06Incidentally Lyle Alceto was shaken up in the first half of the ballgame.
- 2:02:10John Dutton has played an outstanding defensive game.
- 2:02:12Third down and six yards to go at the 27.
- 2:02:15Again wide receivers left and right and they split the running backs for Jim Hart.
- 2:02:19Hart's got the football now dropping back to Suda.
- 2:02:22Dutton pumps it up the middle and that's a 20 yard line.
- 2:02:25A catch is made. A diving catch by Drew Pearson I think.
- 2:02:29He gets up. No, no it's Dupree. Dupree it is.
- 2:02:33The big tie down. 89 instead of 88 and he was tumbling over.
- 2:02:37But he gathered in the football and they let it stay where he put it down at the 18 yard line.
- 2:02:42That might be considered too for our Pennzo Key Play award because this one a big third down play keeps them alive.
- 2:02:49Down at the 18 it's first down for the NFC and they are on the move.
- 2:02:53Billy Joe Dupree with the circus catch.
- 2:02:55He is the Dallas Cowboys first and 10 of the 18 yard line.
- 2:02:59Now again Jim Hart starts the count waiting for the snap.
- 2:03:03He's got the most short drop. Pumps it to the left side.
- 2:03:05And it is taken at the 13 and a completed pass.
- 2:03:09A completed pass.
- 2:03:12And it is Brazil. Brazil who hit Drew Pearson immediately there on the sideline.
- 2:03:18But it is a completed pass at the 13.
- 2:03:21What a play. The battered ball went high in the air.
- 2:03:24Brazil over there bounces him out.
- 2:03:27The ball is brought in at the 13 yard line and one of those freakish plays where a ball batted into the air might well have been picked off or gone incomplete.
- 2:03:35Goes for a completion at five big yards.
- 2:03:37Second down and five at the 13 yard line.
- 2:03:39The NFC is still grabbing the trail by only six points.
- 2:03:44Now here is a quick pitch and McCutcheon's got the ball.
- 2:03:48And he gets the yard and maybe two.
- 2:03:49I stopped outside the 11. It's going to be third and three. Koy Bacon came in to make the tackle.
- 2:03:54Koy Bacon doubling over there making the tackle.
- 2:03:58Bringing his man down. The runner ran right into the back of Tom Mack.
- 2:04:02Mack is in there at the left guard spot.
- 2:04:04And Mack was being blasted out of there by Curly Cove.
- 2:04:07Mack just couldn't contain him.
- 2:04:09He bounced off of Mack's back, spun out, and as he rolled to the right there was Koy Bacon to wrap him up.
- 2:04:15Third down and three yards to go.
- 2:04:16One of the big plays of the football game. Eight and a half minutes remaining to be played.
- 2:04:19AFC 13, the NFC 7, the NFC has the ball.
- 2:04:22Third and three at the 11 yard line.
- 2:04:25Now Jim Hart is tapping back.
- 2:04:27That's Pumps throws and it's taken.
- 2:04:29Inside the 10 yard line by George Juffrin.
- 2:04:32He is out of bounds at the seven.
- 2:04:34It's a first down and goal to go.
- 2:04:36At the seven yard line, Casanova-Domson.
- 2:04:39Hoisted across the sideline marker but not before.
- 2:04:42He has picked up a first down and goal to go for the NFC.
- 2:04:45Here's the surprising part about it.
- 2:04:47The AFC scored the first 13 points, threatened to run away.
- 2:04:51We have said many times they were more impressive.
- 2:04:54Their football players as a whole had better credentials.
- 2:04:57But now they're breathing strong.
- 2:04:59And with a score, the AFC 13, the NFC 7, there's time out on the field.
- 2:05:03Now this for Pennzoil.
- 2:05:05Making a long sustained drive down a football field is tough.
- 2:05:08So it has a lot in common with the driving you do every day.
- 2:05:12You quarterback your car through a lot of tight situations.
- 2:05:15So does a man with a football.
- 2:05:17But he has protection when he's making his way through downfield traffic.
- 2:05:21And the engine in your car needs protection too.
- 2:05:24Extra protection.
- 2:05:25Because today's tough driving conditions can cause motor oil to lose its ability to protect.
- 2:05:30Sooner than you may expect.
- 2:05:32And that's why Pennzoil developed PZL.
- 2:05:36Pennzoil PZL is an extended life motor oil.
- 2:05:39An exclusive formula of synthetic and natural oils.
- 2:05:43PZL is so good it protects for double the miles of the longest oil change recommendation by car manufacturers.
- 2:05:51So get the extra protection of PZL for your engine.
- 2:05:54Look for the big PZL letters on the familiar yellow Pennzoil can.
- 2:05:58Pennzoil PZL, the motor oil that gives you extra safety because it protects for double the miles.
- 2:06:04Now, Wester, Lindsay Nelson, Luke Gripit, our mutual crew from Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
- 2:06:12Eight minutes and 24 seconds remaining in the ball game, the Pro Bowl game.
- 2:06:16And the All-Stars of the AFC lead the NFC 13-7.
- 2:06:20But the NFC has the ball first and goal to go from the seven yard line.
- 2:06:23The NFC breaks the huddle.
- 2:06:25And with the action, Lindsay Nelson.
- 2:06:27Jim Harden off in the end.
- 2:06:28He's got Walter Payton in the right.
- 2:06:29That Lawrence McCutcheon in the left.
- 2:06:31That first down goal to go at the seven yard line.
- 2:06:33The NFC trailing by only six points here.
- 2:06:35Walter Payton has the ball.
- 2:06:36Hits up the middle.
- 2:06:37Tries into the one yard line.
- 2:06:39He has pushed back.
- 2:06:40But it's going to be spotted at the one yard line.
- 2:06:42Mike Hayes pushing Walter Payton back.
- 2:06:45But he drove for six seconds out and goal to go at the one yard line for the NFC.
- 2:06:49Gazzanova was there.
- 2:06:51Jack Lambert was there.
- 2:06:52They ganged up.
- 2:06:53They thought they had stopped.
- 2:06:54Stopped the momentum of Payton.
- 2:06:56Payton got a couple of extra yards as he put those legs of his piston light in the motion
- 2:07:01and fought for a couple of extra yards.
- 2:07:03Second down and goal to go.
- 2:07:05Break the huddle once again.
- 2:07:06Sending Walter Payton over to the right.
- 2:07:08That Lawrence McCutcheon into the left.
- 2:07:09That Jim Harden in the end to take the snap.
- 2:07:14The crowd is raving to the occasion now.
- 2:07:17Harden goes to Huykong.
- 2:07:18Gives it to Payton.
- 2:07:19He hits a touchdown for the NFC.
- 2:07:21Walter Payton took it in for the touchdown.
- 2:07:24The score is tied with a conversion of dip coming for the NFC.
- 2:07:29A 13-13 tie.
- 2:07:32And a conversion of dip will be coming up here now.
- 2:07:34The clock shows seven minutes, 37 seconds remaining.
- 2:07:41Walter Payton, one yard at left tackle, driving it in.
- 2:07:44He drove in two plays the last eight yards.
- 2:07:47And Lindsay, I just leaned over during the commercial break and said,
- 2:07:51this fellow could change the whole complexion of the game.
- 2:07:5413 to 13.
- 2:07:55The point after up Bigwood.
- 2:07:57In two carats, Walter Payton took it in.
- 2:07:59It's going to be now a friend Herrera with Charlie Waters holding.
- 2:08:02Waters puts it down.
- 2:08:03Herrera boots it up.
- 2:08:04And it's good with a score.
- 2:08:06NFC 14, AFC 13.
- 2:08:09There's a tie-out on the field.
- 2:08:11Now this for Buick Automobiles.
- 2:08:14The new mid-sized Buick Grease.
- 2:08:16It meets the demands of today.
- 2:08:18Without losing the special things about Buick that people have always loved.
- 2:08:23Now that's some trick.
- 2:08:25On the outside, it's trimmer than last year's Regal Coupe.
- 2:08:29Yet there's more headroom, more legroom, more trunk room.
- 2:08:34With the wizardry of a turbocharged sport coupe.
- 2:08:38And such traditional Buick qualities as luxury, elegance, and prestige.
- 2:08:45The new Regal, a down-to-earth dream car.
- 2:08:48At your Buick dealer.
- 2:08:50They surely will have found you the amazing things you see.
- 2:08:56The cars they built, the friends they've worked, how can you not see, see?
- 2:09:02A little science, a little magic.
- 2:09:05A little science, a little magic.
- 2:09:08A little science, a little magic.
- 2:09:14Seven and a half minutes to go, Lindsay Nelson.
- 2:09:1614 to 13, the National Football Conference.
- 2:09:19The National Stars have finally taken the lead now.
- 2:09:22With just 7.37 left.
- 2:09:24Moving 63 yards, 12 plays.
- 2:09:26They control the ball 5 minutes 11 seconds.
- 2:09:29There are so many game breakers on the field.
- 2:09:31So many game breakers.
- 2:09:33A friend Herrera is ready to kick off.
- 2:09:35Billy White shoes, Johnson is center deep.
- 2:09:37Greg Woods on one side, Len Swans on the other.
- 2:09:39The ball is put up.
- 2:09:41Over to Swans side of the field.
- 2:09:43And Len Swans got it at the 16.
- 2:09:44Runs toward midfield at the 20.
- 2:09:4625, stops at the 26 yard line.
- 2:09:48So they'll start first and ten.
- 2:09:50The tackle by Tom Banks, downfield to make it.
- 2:09:52First and ten at the 26.
- 2:09:54Mutual brings you the best in NCAA college basketball action over many of these stations.
- 2:09:59Next Saturday is Tennessee at Kentucky.
- 2:10:01So be sure to join Tony Roberts for the exciting play by play over many of these same mutual stations.
- 2:10:07And tonight we'll tell you again, Alabama beat Kentucky tonight.
- 2:10:11Handing the number one team in the nation their first defeat.
- 2:10:15And now Kenny Sabler brings them up.
- 2:10:17Clark Van Egen and Greg Freudis is running back.
- 2:10:19They're trailing by a point.
- 2:10:21And as Sabler drops back, pumps once and whips it.
- 2:10:23It's complete up the middle at the 40, 45, 46 yard line.
- 2:10:27Cliff Price second.
- 2:10:29The Oakland combination, first and ten now.
- 2:10:31At the 46, Roger Whirly came in to make the tackle.
- 2:10:34There are people in football who will tell you that in a circumstance like this, late in the game and you need a drive, there's no better man to do it than that left-handed porter back in there right now, Kenny Sabler.
- 2:10:43That's right.
- 2:10:44A lot of the defenders will tell you that sucker throws from the wrong side.
- 2:10:47That's a problem.
- 2:10:49First down and ten yards to go.
- 2:10:51Running backs are evened up now.
- 2:10:52It's Freud and Van Egen, poor Kenny Sabler.
- 2:10:54Sabler again in the left hander, drops back.
- 2:10:56Takes one look.
- 2:10:57Pumps it up the middle again and it's taken by Casper.
- 2:10:59The Oakland combination.
- 2:11:01Dave Casper stopped at the 45 yard line.
- 2:11:03The 45 of the NFC.
- 2:11:06And Matt Blair and Isaiah Robertson were in there on the tackle.
- 2:11:09They didn't throw him.
- 2:11:10They didn't have to throw him.
- 2:11:12Big Dave Casper is a fellow that you don't throw around.
- 2:11:15He's 6 foot 4, 230 pounds.
- 2:11:17They just held up.
- 2:11:19And he said, all right, that's it.
- 2:11:20They had him wrapped up around the jersey.
- 2:11:22But the ball is at the 45.
- 2:11:23And already, Sabler has begun to build a fire.
- 2:11:26Second down and a yard to go.
- 2:11:27And it's at the 45 yard line of the NFC.
- 2:11:30Stagger the running backs just as tried this time.
- 2:11:32Van Egen's got the ball.
- 2:11:33Tries for the first down and may have picked it up.
- 2:11:36They'll have to take a long look at this one.
- 2:11:38It'll depend entirely on where it's spotted.
- 2:11:39If it's spotted where the headlinesman is right now, it's not a first down.
- 2:11:43Harvey Martin was in there on the tackle.
- 2:11:45It is not a first down.
- 2:11:46So it's going to be third down and less than a yard to go.
- 2:11:49And it's just inside the 45.
- 2:11:51I'll tell you one thing.
- 2:11:52They've got both Harvey Martin and Randy White,
- 2:11:54the whole right side of the world champion Dallas Cowboy defense.
- 2:11:58And when you've got White and Martin over there, you've got a lot of artillery.
- 2:12:02Russ Francis comes in to stay in there with Casper on a double tight end line.
- 2:12:05But they want the first down.
- 2:12:07And that's Sabler, respots Pruitt over to the left side.
- 2:12:10Pruitt and Van Egen, they need less than a yard to go for the first down.
- 2:12:13And here's Pruitt coming to the right side.
- 2:12:15He's got the first down and he is hit at the 42 yard line.
- 2:12:19So it's going to be first and 10 just outside the 42 yard line for the AFC.
- 2:12:25Kenny Houston was coming on to play from the free safety.
- 2:12:28He was coming across and Van Egen picked him up nicely there and blocked him just enough.
- 2:12:33Hit him strong enough just to keep him out of the play
- 2:12:35and to give them the running room they needed to get the first down.
- 2:12:38Five minutes, 40 seconds remaining to be played in the Pro Bowl game in Tampa, Florida.
- 2:12:41The NFC 14, the AFC 13.
- 2:12:44The AFC with the ball, first down, 10 yards to go.
- 2:12:47At the 42 yard line, Kenny Stabler has the ball.
- 2:12:51Dodge back now, bumps it up the middle, a diving catch.
- 2:12:55A diving catch by tight end there at the 26.
- 2:12:58Big Dave Casper pulled it in.
- 2:13:00The All-American from Notre Dame pulled it in at the 26 yard line.
- 2:13:04What a great year Dave Casper has had this year.
- 2:13:07Four touchdowns, four touchdowns in the playoffs this year.
- 2:13:11Three in one game against Baltimore.
- 2:13:13I can tell you one thing, that Baltimore coach, Ted Marchibrotto,
- 2:13:18who is coaching this All-Star team, never wanted to see Dave Casper in action except for him.
- 2:13:23First down and 10 yards to go.
- 2:13:25Van Egen in the left set now.
- 2:13:27And as Pruitt getting the football, he tries left guard, but he is bowled down.
- 2:13:31At the line of scrimmage by Big Claude Humphrey.
- 2:13:33We pause briefly for station identification.
- 2:13:35This is Mutual, your news and sports radio network.
- 2:13:38KCBS San Francisco, News Radio 74.
- 2:13:45Well, let's see, the AFC now moving right back.
- 2:13:47Trailing 14 to 13.
- 2:13:49But the clock now is the one thing they have to fight.
- 2:13:51Three minutes and 48 seconds.
- 2:13:53The clock is running. They're back in a huddle at the 35.
- 2:13:56They're going to have to hurry.
- 2:13:57But the old left-hander from Alabama, Kenny Stabler, has got a clock in his head.
- 2:14:01It's second down and 10 at the 26 yard line.
- 2:14:04Stabler dropping straight back.
- 2:14:05Humps once now.
- 2:14:07And it's dropped. He can't get rid of it.
- 2:14:09At the 35, it is Stabler and Eamonn there to drop Stabler.
- 2:14:13He was waiting for a receiver to clear up the middle.
- 2:14:16And Casper is saying something to an official.
- 2:14:18I would guess indicating that somebody might have glommed onto him.
- 2:14:21In any case, the ball is spotted back at the 35.
- 2:14:24For a loss of nine, it's third and 19.
- 2:14:26Well, the blocking up in the offensive line for the first time tonight.
- 2:14:29Really the first time tonight broke down.
- 2:14:31I think primarily because Isaiah Robertson was blitzing.
- 2:14:34He came across on the play.
- 2:14:36He came straight across.
- 2:14:38Isaiah Robertson, Harvey Martin, and Cleveland Elam, all three of them are on top of Stabler.
- 2:14:42But Elam was a man who weighted him down and rode him to the ground.
- 2:14:46Third and 19. Cliff Brach is on the left set.
- 2:14:49Dropping back now is Stabler.
- 2:14:52Close to Brach and overthrows him in for play.
- 2:14:54Brach was coming back toward the inside.
- 2:14:57It is an incompletion.
- 2:14:59Randy White was putting the pressure on.
- 2:15:01Jeff Steven was covering the middle.
- 2:15:03Fourth and 19 at the 35 yard line.
- 2:15:05I believe White actually hit the arm of Stabler as he cut that one loose.
- 2:15:08Randy White was in there.
- 2:15:10He made a great pass rush, broke across the middle there.
- 2:15:13Bob Kuchenberg tried to block him there, and he got through.
- 2:15:16Fourth down now.
- 2:15:18Fourth down and the NFC.
- 2:15:21Failed by a point as they move back in position to receive this football now
- 2:15:25because they figure they're going to get it one way or the other.
- 2:15:28However, Ray Guy isn't in there to hold. Guy isn't in there to kick.
- 2:15:31He's in there to hold, and Lenhardt's going to attempt a 52 yarder.
- 2:15:35A 52 yard field goal attempt, which in turn will put the AFC ahead.
- 2:15:39The ball is riding. It'll be short.
- 2:15:41It is in the inside court, the in line.
- 2:15:44It'll be turned over at the 35 yard line.
- 2:15:46First and 10. Cody Lenhardt, 52 yard field goal attempt.
- 2:15:50He's short, and the NFC, leading by a point, gets the ball at the 35.
- 2:15:54With 2.58 left to play.
- 2:15:56That was a decision made on the bench over there, and you can bank on it.
- 2:15:59Dan Marcher-Brota said, well, we're down that far.
- 2:16:02Let's face it, there's two minutes and 58 seconds when they may never get
- 2:16:05another offensive play with the football.
- 2:16:07At least let's take the shot, and I don't blame him a bit.
- 2:16:10True, you give the ball up a little further up the field at the 35 yard line, Lindsay,
- 2:16:15but when you've only got two minutes and 58 seconds, you're going to have to take it away in a hurry,
- 2:16:20or you're going to have to try and get three.
- 2:16:22Keep in mind, we are approaching the two minute warning.
- 2:16:24It's first and 10 at the 35 yard line.
- 2:16:26The blue-clad NFC has the football now. Jim Hart is the quarterback.
- 2:16:31They leave this one on the ground.
- 2:16:33And again, it's the little man spinning his way upfield.
- 2:16:36And all the way across the 40 yard line,
- 2:16:38Wander Payton, the little man, who came in and exploded in there on two tries
- 2:16:43for the last touchdown to tie the score.
- 2:16:46And now it's at the 37 yard line of the AFC on Payton's first first and 10 at the 37 yard line.
- 2:16:53Named at halftime, the player of the year in the National Football League.
- 2:16:58One major award that he picked up tonight, and he came out at halftime to collect it.
- 2:17:01And it looks like he's going to steal the show here.
- 2:17:03First down 10 yards to go, a 28 yard scamper for Walter Payton.
- 2:17:08Now again, Jim Hart is waiting for the snap. McCutchen is the other running back.
- 2:17:12However, it is handed off once again to McCutchen, and McCutchen goes to the 30 yard line.
- 2:17:16Jack Lambert made the tackle again of seven yards on the play.
- 2:17:19You know, at Jackson State it was only a very few years ago that Walter Payton played in the band.
- 2:17:25That's right, and a very religious young man.
- 2:17:28There is a timeout here, the two minute warning, two minutes left in the ballgame, and with timeout the score.
- 2:17:33The NFC 14, the AFC 13, now this word.

- 2:18:39Next year, the Provo will be played at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, and two years from now at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
- 2:18:47Well, Lindsay, I really am not going over two years in advance to study the numbers,
- 2:18:51but I will be over there for the Hawaiian Open over many of these mutual stations next week.
- 2:18:57I'll be thinking about you as I shovel out in New York.
- 2:19:00Second out and three yards to go at the 30-yard line. Wide receivers left and right.
- 2:19:05Jim Hart, quarterback of the NFC, and they lead by a point in this ballgame.
- 2:19:10That's Walter Payton. He cuts up a right guard and drives to the 25-yard line.
- 2:19:14Takes up five yards for a first and ten. Jack Lambert in to make the tackle, along with Tony Green.
- 2:19:19So, the NFC, leading by a score of 14 to 13 with 1.45 left to play, has a first and ten at the 25-yard line of the AFC.
- 2:19:27That little man just absolutely sparkles a great, great running back.
- 2:19:32Walter Payton from Jackson State and the Chicago Bears.
- 2:19:36Named tonight as Player of the Year in the National Football League.
- 2:19:40Here they come now, wide receivers left and right. McCutcheon and Payton.
- 2:19:45Payton has carried 11 times for 64 yards in this game tonight.
- 2:19:51That's him going through McCutcheon and he is spinning his way into the 20-yard line.
- 2:19:55McCutcheon picked up five yards on the play. It'll be second and five. Tony Green came up to make the tackle.
- 2:20:01Green had to hurry on that one too, because this fellow just spun in there and McCutcheon was spinning away.
- 2:20:08We're getting a timeout signal now and the AFC sounds the clock. More after this special 60-second message.
- 2:20:15Hello, I'm Jack Anderson speaking for the National Suggestion Box.

- 2:20:43Friends, this is Diana Shore.
- 2:20:45And I'm Nancy Wilson with a tip for all you employers.
- 2:20:48If you're looking for able, reliable, steady workers, how about hiring the handicapped?
- 2:20:54Disabled veterans have proved on the job they're just as safe, just as productive as the ordinary able-bodied employee.
- 2:21:03For a good worker, a safe worker, hire a disabled veteran.
- 2:21:07Call the local office of your state employment service and do that today.
- 2:21:12Leading 14 to 13, Lindsay, with a minute and one second left in the ballgame, you've just got to believe.
- 2:21:19It's second down and a short five yards for the NFC inside the 20-yard line to the AFC.
- 2:21:26You've got to believe the NFC will keep the ball on the ground and run it out.
- 2:21:29Tonight's Lazy Boy winners, our offensive player of the game, was Walter Payton for the NFC,
- 2:21:34defensive player of the game, Randy Gratishaw, the middle linebacker of the AFC.
- 2:21:38They'll each receive beautiful Lazy Boy recliners.
- 2:21:41Second down play, and our heart is up there, and he has his running backs aligned,
- 2:21:44and the left side McCutcheon and the right side Payton.
- 2:21:46Waiting for the snub, the ball is inside the 20-yard line.
- 2:21:49This is McCutcheon, McCutcheon of a right guard, and he is inside the 15-yard line at about the 13-yard line.
- 2:21:56First down and 10 yards to go at the 13. Mike Haynes and Tony Green made the stop.
- 2:22:01The NFC has kept the football on the ground. They picked it up, and the clock shows 44 seconds
- 2:22:06remaining to be played in this game, and it's running.
- 2:22:09It is wound down out of 38 seconds and still running.
- 2:22:12First down, 10 yards to go for the NFC. They have the ball at the AFC 13.
- 2:22:17The National Football Conference is leading by a score of 14 to 13.
- 2:22:21Now Hart slowly comes up to the line. Wide receivers left and right.
- 2:22:25Still McCutcheon and Payton. Hart's waiting for the snap, going high.
- 2:22:29Here's Walter Payton trying the left side.
- 2:22:31Gets inside the 10 legs, turning down to the 8-yard line.
- 2:22:33He picks up 5 yards on the play before Jack Lambert brought him down.
- 2:22:36It'll be second out at 5 yards to go at the 8 o'clock.
- 2:22:39It shows 8 seconds, 7 seconds, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
- 2:22:45The game is over. The National Football Conference has won the Pro Bowl game
- 2:22:49over the AFC by a final score of 14 to 13.
- 2:22:53Our key player award and our key player winner tonight in the Pro Bowl game, Billy Joe Dupree.
- 2:22:59He'll receive an outstandingly beautiful wall trophy to help him remember the performance in this great game
- 2:23:04and a gift supply of famous Pennzoil PZL Extended Life motor oil
- 2:23:09to help keep his car running smoothly for many, many miles.
- 2:23:12I know that Billy Joe would cherish the plaque with Marxist actions in tonight's Pro Bowl.
- 2:23:17The comments from all over the league have been great.
- 2:23:19The players have been honored this season have caused to be proud of their achievements.
- 2:23:23So Billy Joe Dupree gets the Pennzoil key player award and a gift supply of famous Pennzoil PZL Extended Life motor oil
- 2:23:31and our sincere congratulations to Billy Joe.
- 2:23:35We'll be back to our wrap up now after this for Pennzoil.
- 2:23:39Making a long sustained drive down a football field is tough.
- 2:23:42So it has a lot in common with the driving you do every day.
- 2:23:45You quarterback your car through a lot of tight situations.
- 2:23:48And so does the man with the football.
- 2:23:50But he has protection when he's making his way down through field traffic.
- 2:23:53And the engine in your car needs protection too.
- 2:23:56Extra protection.
- 2:23:58Because today's tough driving conditions can cause motor oil to lose its ability to protect sooner than you may expect.
- 2:24:04That's why Pennzoil developed PZL.
- 2:24:06Pennzoil PZL is an extended life motor oil, an exclusive formula of synthetic and natural oils.
- 2:24:12PZL is so good, it protects for double the miles of the longest oil change recommendation
- 2:24:17by car manufacturers.
- 2:24:19So get the extra protection of PZL for your engine.
- 2:24:23Look for the big PZL letters on the familiar yellow Pennzoil can.
- 2:24:28Pennzoil PZL, the motor oil that gives you extra safety because it protects for double the miles.
- 2:24:37Alenzi Nelson, the most valuable player in this football game.
- 2:24:41A young man by the name of Walter Payton.
- 2:24:43And 13 carries, 77 yards tonight.
- 2:24:47He scored the big go ahead touchdown that set it up tight, that tied the game at least.
- 2:24:51And then right after that of course came the kick that put the NFC in front 14 to 13.
- 2:24:57A tremendous football game.
- 2:24:59A strange football game because in the early going the AFC was in complete control.
- 2:25:03And the NFC looked if anything inept.
- 2:25:05Looked as though this might be one of the few runaway games in the history of the Pro Bowl.
- 2:25:09But then with Kenny Stabler guiding the way, the NFC, rather the Kenny Stabler put them out in front.
- 2:25:17The NFC riding on Walter Payton came back and he tied it up.
- 2:25:22It was a friend Herrera who kicked the point that put them out in front.
- 2:25:25And the NFC won it 14 to 13.
- 2:25:27And I guess that touchdown for Walter Payton will be another satisfying moment to remember
- 2:25:32for the next five to six months because from now until July he can take things easy
- 2:25:37and he can just head for the, what do you call it, the ham and beans brigade
- 2:25:45because that's just about what it boils down to when you head for all of those banquets across the country
- 2:25:51that'll want Walter Payton, the player of the year in the National Football League, as their guest.
- 2:25:55He played a great game tonight. We'll continue our wrap up now after this word.
- 2:25:59It does make sense.
- 2:26:00It doesn't.
- 2:26:01Yes it does. It makes good sense.
- 2:26:03Well, I don't know.
- 2:26:05Does leasing a car make sense?
- 2:26:07More people are being convinced it is a smart move.
- 2:26:09Start with your nearby leasing Lincoln Mercury dealer.
- 2:26:12Nobody has more kinds of cars for more kinds of people.
- 2:26:15Everything from the Continental Mark V to the little Mercury Bobcat.
- 2:26:18From Cougar XR7 to new Mercury Zephyr.
- 2:26:21Eight fine lines in all.
- 2:26:23Leasing is easy at the sign of the cat.
- 2:26:25One reason, our optional coupon maintenance book with its prepaid service at dealers coast to coast.
- 2:26:30Another, the popularity of our cars.
- 2:26:32Last year our lease business hit an all time high.
- 2:26:35Traditionally our Continental Marks returned more of their original sticker price than comparable Cadillac models.
- 2:26:40You know, that does make sense.
- 2:26:43I told you, didn't I?
- 2:26:44If this is your year for a new car, lease it easy at the sign of the cat.
- 2:26:49Whether you buy or lease your new 78 car, your nearby Bay Area Lincoln Mercury dealer is the man to see.
- 2:26:56Let me say as we wrap up tonight's ball game, it's been a great pleasure to share the mutual microphones with you so many times on Monday nights.
- 2:27:03The playoff games, the bowl games and games like the Pro Bowl here.
- 2:27:07Just a great, great pleasure to share our mutual microphones with you and it's been fun.
- 2:27:12It's been a great deal of fun Al.
- 2:27:13Thank you very kindly for all your great help and your high good humor in your company.
- 2:27:17And my thanks to Ed Little and Jack Clements and Lou Griffin and all the people at Mutual for the opportunity of having worked another year of Monday nights.
- 2:27:24Football, concluding with this Pro Bowl.
- 2:27:26Al, thank you very much.
- 2:27:28Tonight's Pro Bowl was brought to you by the Convention and Tourist Authority of Las Vegas.
- 2:27:33The Buick Motor Division of General Motors, the Teamsters, by GM Trucks and by Pennzoil, the motor oil worth asking for.
- 2:27:41Our statistician tonight was Sam Bennett.
- 2:27:43Our remote engineer was Rod McMorrow.
- 2:27:46Our field producer, the old standby, Lou Griffin.
- 2:27:50Washington studio engineer was Jim Harmon and our studio producer was Keith Newby.
- 2:27:55Executive producer for Mutual Sports is Jack Clements.
- 2:27:59Again, the final score, the NFC 14, the AFC 13.
- 2:28:03Now, this is Al Wester speaking for Lindsay Nelson saying, so long.
