- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Ooh, a rare Saturday morning podcast brought to you by Pusto.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to the nine or game this week, Sunday night football cannot wait, there's only one decision to make where am I going to eat?
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: And now there's no decisions to make, because that decision is made for you.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to go to one of the two stands that Pusto, Mejicano Moderna has in the stadium.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: They got one at P129 and won it 3116.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: This food will transport you out of a stadium right back into a stadium.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, how do I get world-class food in a football stadium?
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: You get it by going to Pustle, the signature Mexico City style, crispy melted cheese, it's one award after award.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: Their tortillas are made in-house daily from scratch.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: How are you getting food like that in a football stadium?
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: You're not.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, if you're not going to the game, you can get it out of the stadium two two locations in the Bay Area, and in Southern California, Orange County, and La Jolla, Poesto.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: If you happen to be catching this podcast on Saturday or Sunday before the night of game, actually during the night of game, if you're not going, go watch the game at Poesto.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: If you're in the area, it's a great place, great vibe.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: I tell you about it all the time.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's great for, you know, boys night, it's great for game watch.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's great for date night, it's great for business lunch.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's great for all of that.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: The foods fantastic.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: The vibes are fantastic.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: uh... quality the margaritas i didn't mention the margaritas in the stadium and in location and special item in the stadium is you can get burritos case of burrito chicken out by store burrito with the crispy melted cheese plus the case of burrito taco and the guacamole and the bang bang of the perfect margaritas so the adler brothers are huge and on her fans or a bunch of these games um... and uh... the great supporters of the show appreciate them appreciate you supporting
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Kenny Powers from Eastbound and down had this great quote.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't been able to get on my head the last couple of weeks.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's fundamentals of the crutch of the talent was.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's a great quote, but it's wrong.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: There is one clear fundamental in Bears, Niners on Sunday night that really stands out as you look at this game.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: And that fundamental is one of the least sexy fundamentals that exists.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: But,
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody knows this critical.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: The officiating crew calling this game throws the most flags in the NFL this year.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: The referee is a guy named Alex more just first year as a white hat referees called White hat because it wears a white hat 19.7 flags per game specifically They call the most roughing the past or penalties in the NFL
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: this on paper favors the 49ers, but they have to stay committed to their fundamentals and not get sucked in to a penalty game.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers have the most unnecessary roughness penalties in the league.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: Nine, the bears specifically have the most roughing the past or penalties in the NFL.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: Nine.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: Overall though, the 49ers are pretty disciplined.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: Second few is penalties in the league.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: bears have the ninth most seven a game.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that adds up to 12.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: That means there's going to be seven to eight more flags thrown in this game than these teams, uh, you know, averages would tell us.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: So that to me is the number one fundamental of this game.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: It, it will be close if the food owners don't turn the ball over.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think one of the sneaky, which means they got to be prepared for a game where the fundamentals matter.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think one of the real sneaky stats of the year.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: really the first two years of the Caleb Williams era is that he doesn't turn the ball over.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: He's got 40 plus touchdowns.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like six interceptions in two years coming into, he's almost on with his second year and I think people thought, well, he's not going to see it.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's not going to be disciplined.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: He's completion percentages.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: Whoa, 58%.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: And his yards per attempt is not near the top of the league.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's middle of the pack.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: But
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I think him and Ben Johnson are proving to be a great marriage.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't turn it over if Caleb doesn't throw a pick in this game on Sunday night.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: He will set a record for the most cubic, the graphic here says consecutive cubic starts.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's not correct.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: Ignore that part of the graphic.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: The most cubic starts without an interception in the first two seasons of a player's career, 22.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's incredible.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: So he, you know, I think if you haven't watched him and you had an assumption about him coming into the year, you might have thought like, well, he probably,
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: He protects it well.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I think as we've seen, now what would tends to happen is they come up with the opening script.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: They're very disciplined with the opening script.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: And they've had six comeback wins in the last two minutes.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: No team has done that since the merger.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, that part feels like are you, are you the cardiac kids, are you the comeback kids, or are you, you know, winning games in an unsustainable way, right?
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: You go back and look last year or whatever that stat was.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: It was like,
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: the chiefs of one 12 games by one score last year.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like, well, that's great.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a winning status and unsustainable?
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's probably both for these guys.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a winning set?
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: Is it unsustainable?
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but it does tell you, you know, that they can create magic.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's because they're quarterback and create magic.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: And because they're well coached.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there was a play last week.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have it here.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: You might have seen it.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: If, you know, a lot of you watch the Packers Bears
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: On Saturday, we're the bears.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's bad for the 49ers that the bears tried and failed at this play last week where they run the the tight end behind center and then they try to snap it through his legs to the running back on 4th and short and one over his head.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: Um, that's best bad for the nighters because that's a lesson that should be a lesson learned for Ben Johnson.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's not a lesson learned.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: And it's an indication that the bears are going to make some mistakes and decision making make some mistakes in the penalty game, but I think Ben Johnson's going to be pretty buttoned down in this game.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think he knows it.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: He's he's got to be going toe to toe with Kyle Shanahan.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: I you know, I was alarmed.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: by his alarms, not the right word.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: I was on alert, which maybe is the same, but for me, I think it's different.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: I was on alert for him after that opening press conference, where he said, you know, I look forward to beating Matt LaFlor and I thought, oh, that's good nature.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then I turned out him and Matt LaFlor, Ben Johnson, Matt LaFlor, or no each other.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got beat the first time, but like, you know, they could have beat him twice in three weeks where they could have lost to the Packers twice in three weeks.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they beat him.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I think there's, to me, like, that's a fundamental, I mean, some mistakes, they only had six points, basically, like two minutes left in the game.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: But I do think there is something special with him and him, Caleb and Ben Johnson, and I think you just got to be ready for the possibility.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: No, the reality that the way you've played against the Titans and the Colts, it's easier to play that way, it gives the Titans on the Colts.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: that I was good, and I think more importantly, you go into the game feeling good when you're playing the Titans and the Colts.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: Less on edge, you know, the Niners, I don't think we can underestimate this.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: They knew they clinched a playoffs spot while they were sitting in the middle room on Saturday night, right?
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, I guess it was Sunday night because they played Monday.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: But we were all watching that Lions game.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: So the Niners, whatever they were doing in the hotel, the Lions lost 49ers made the playoffs.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: that takes pressure off doesn't mean there's not pressure.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is different now.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: This is different I think than the last two weeks where the Niners have without a doubt played excellent football.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: But it's also possible maybe likely you know that they're missing George Kittle and when we talk about the most important 49ers it's hard to watch these guys without George and
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: Look at what George has done in the last six games.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: He has 40 catches for 499 yards in five touchdowns.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: How good is that?
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that pace, that 17-game pace, would be 113 catches, 1400 and 144 touchdowns.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: Which is almost record-setting pace.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: That pace of 113 catches, the record's 116.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: 14, 14 yards, the record's 14, 16.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: 14 touchdowns, the record's 18.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: Erds in 2018 had that catch record and the Travis Kelsey has the yards record and Grunk has the touchdown record for a tight end.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: Now, by the way, Tray McBride's probably gonna break that catchest record.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a good chance to break that.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's at 109, the tight end for the Cardinals.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a shot to break that catchest record.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: But the point is, like the George Kittle that the Niners have gotten in the last six games, his historically great.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: historically great at tie that.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so if they don't have them, they do really, you know, getting Ricky Pierce all back would be obviously a big deal, but I such a big deal.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: But there's just no replacing it.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: One thing this season to me, I don't think anyone needs reminder of how good George is, but instead of bait up, okay, who are the most important players?
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: You go quarterback, you go McAfrey, you go Warner, you go Bosa, and maybe getting Fred back at the end of a year if they get to the energy championship game.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that would happen.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then be a huge deal, you know, can you, there's a difference between could you compete versus can you want a Super Bowl, can you want a Super Bowl without, you know, a star on defense, they don't have a pro baller.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: that's hard.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: But could you be here if you had Fred but not George?
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that's even.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: I hate ranking these guys because like it takes teams to win championship.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: You need no team is ever want to championship without multiple excellent players.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: You need excellent players.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: But I do think watching this watching this team this year.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: George, he was already a top five guy.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: uh... non-corderback on this team he might be i mean i think you can make the case him and uh... you can make the case easily that he stopped to so
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: Not having him would be would be a huge deal, but I still think there's enough because because if you get Ricky back You do add some personal back.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: You do add some dynamics to your to your past game By the way, looking at some history.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: I do want to share this.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know this is some of your Historians may know this but looking at the history of the 49ers, you know, they've got the chance to be the first team ever
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: to hoaxed all the way through the playoffs on the Super Bowl.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, the 84 Niners hosted the Super Bowl and we five at Stanford Stadium.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not the same though, it's not the same.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: But I did think like I was talking about a pop-up about it, Greg Poppa, and he's like, well, what about, we showed he, because his memories unbelievable.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, well, what about,
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't even remember.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, what about the 80 Rams, because they played the Super Bowl with the Rose balls.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: Well, no, they were on the road.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I didn't know.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: I had to go to football reference.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: And he goes, you know, one thing.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: Because, you know, the 72 dolphins didn't host every playoffs game.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, what?
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, go look.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: So sure enough, the undefeated dolphins of 1972 played the AFC Championship game on the road in Pittsburgh.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: I did not know this.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe, maybe I've been meeting some ignorance here.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: At that point in the NFL, they rotated home game.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: So your seating didn't really matter when it came to whether you were at home or a road.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: So Miami, who was undefeated, went to pit, went to three rivers, stadium, and Pittsburgh to play the AFC Championship game.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_00]: And then they'd be Washington 14 to 7 at the Super Bowl.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: uh... i did watch the the montana dock did not montana that we all watched that would the the john hellway dock you better on that flake so it's not a multi-part series it's one you know 90 minutes uh... it's really good there's some a lot of really good mike shenanit some cops a little call shenanit
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: It was interesting.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: I did think of Brock and, you know, we're talking about a guy who has the chance because my wife was watching it with me.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: She said, you know, she's he the best quarterback ever.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, you know,
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's Montana, and then it became Brady, but, you know, L-way, his talent, completely, he went to five, like if they had won four of those five, and then maybe there would have been an argument.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: He won the last two, but if you'd won like, you know, the first two lost the third, then wins two at the end.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: Who knows if he sticks around for the two at the end, but I think he'd be in the conversation that if he'd done it.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the thing about it is, you forget, right?
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: I did got, you know,
- 12:53[SPEAKER_00]: I remember the end of his career, how much pressure was on him.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: At that time, at that age, I didn't remember those games of the 80s, but I knew enough of the history to know that he was an incredible pressure, and it wasn't just because they were losing the Super Bowl.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: They were getting destroyed.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers destroyed him, too, for destroying them.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't just losing Super Bowl.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: They were getting annihilated.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, there's a lot of good footage of some young Kyle, but the point on Brock, it was interesting to see kind of the way Elways teammates talk about him when he arrived, that he was just
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he was a low key guy, one of the guys, it really is like, it's not 100% of the time, the fundamental quarterback leader quality, but.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: nine times out of ten, it does feel like it's it's uh one of the key key qualities.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: Although I think back to that quote that I started the the episode with fundamentals or the crutch of the talent list goes back to what I said about I've said for a long time about quarterbacks.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think every guy starts out wanting to be far or wanting to be Rogers because it
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it seems like it's the least amount of study and discipline.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: You can just go play, man, just go play, make things happen.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, even at the highest level with the greatest players, you know, really get away with that, you know, Tom Brady, very fundamental, Joe Montana, very fundamental.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: You want to win at the highest level, you can't be.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not saying that Rogers and Farve will certainly forth.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying Rogers and have the fun.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying,
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's the guy you want to be, because it seems like it's the most loose and fun and you listen to the coach the least and whatever, but speaking of fundamentals, how about Kyle winning him going to Michigan?
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'm a huge college football day.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: Cowarding him going to Michigan is a stunner if you go back 12 months.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: Now, when you go back three days and cow winning him's out at Utah, and then he's taken over Michigan, not as much of a stunner.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: I thought he quickly became the most obvious candidate available, but it's still wild.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: And winning him, I was a part of some great, not a part of, I was there for.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: Brady Hawke's last year at Michigan.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: I know we got a lot of Michigan alums.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: I hear from them.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: People love going in Arbor.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: I was on a plane to Detroit this year for a college team.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: I was going to East Lansing, Michigan State, but it was parents weekend at Michigan.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: And the plane was flooded.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: It was nothing but like, you know, Michigan parents from the peninsula.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_00]: And so I was talking to a bunch of them.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, truly surrounded.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like it was
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't we got a lot of Michigan alums and fans here, but they had a game, a Brady Hokes last year, he got replaced by Jim Harbour the next year, but you taught beat them.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I was there, I was doing like reporting for the Pactual Network, and there was a lightning delay.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: It was like two and a half hours.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: They had to clear the state.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was a really long delay.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_00]: And you taught that the game was kind of over that point.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: But you, you taught what's kicking their butt and we had to clear the press box so I get in the elevator you know now and it's me and then an older woman in a wheelchair being wheeled out by you know a family member or something and I over here she's in the back of the elevator and she's she's got like a blank a Michigan blanket over her legs.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's the late it's cold.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: And she just goes, she kind of talking to nobody goes, what has happened to my football team?
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I just thought like, oh my God, the level of pressure.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: Here you see, like you think, you stare at how sweet old lady, and she's the elevator, basically saying, we gotta fire this coach.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: This is unacceptable.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: What has happened to my football team?
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, this is a high pressure spot in Calwoodingham, beat him that day.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: And winning him, Utah football was probably part of my favorite
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: broadcast.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: I called a BYU Utah game back in 2018 that had this crazy comeback on FS1.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: that was my favorite until last year when I did undefeated Indiana had college game day was there at McAfee and Lee Corso who had been an Indiana coach came out and picked Indiana in the state and the place went nuts and then this was Indiana Washington last year.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: Pressure off the edge, and it's intercepted.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: The edge of our pawns roll out the big red carpet touched out in the end.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: And that then became my favorite call probably, but
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: but winning him, winning him in Utah is just such a, I mean, they ran such a program.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: Now, they won time games this last year, but they won like five or eight the year before.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, very massive, massive, massive development in the world of college football.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, big game for Brock, he's rolling, Caleb comes in, playmaker.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: When you see that on the other side, met other quarterbacks out there, sling him, not getting sacked.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, can you stay within the fundamentals, you know?
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the Niners have done a good job of playing from a head.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, the bears have done a good job of playing from behind.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I think it's, it's, you throw the pick, you throw against the cults up to scores where the only thing, whatever it was, six minutes left, less, the only thing that can beat you is turning the ball over that point.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was a great performance, a great rating, you know, all that stuff is true, but big pressure game, come back team, talented team, quick strike, the ability, who cares that y'all got, they only had 6.0, well, one mistake can wipe out.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know, three and a half quarters or how one mistake and wipe out 20 great decisions and five great throws and five touchdowns and all that.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: So, and I think everybody knows it.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's no secret.
