Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32All right, let's hop into today. Why don't you start by
- 0:35introducing yourself kind of what your background is in this
- 0:38great sport and the name of your podcast.
- 0:42Hi, my name is Chris and I, I'm a contribute to the Track Castic
- 0:46podcast. As you can tell from my accent,
- 0:49I'm British. So we are we're kind of a
- 0:51British and Irish podcast. So there's a group of us
- 0:55contributors and we can evolve, just chat about the latest
- 0:58goings on in track and field, I guess with more of a British and
- 1:00Irish kind of angle to it. But obviously we do chat about,
- 1:04you know, the global sport, which is what track and field
- 1:06is. What's the significant When I
- 1:09first reached out, I love the name Trekastic, you know,
- 1:11fantastic. I don't know where it came from.
- 1:13What's the significance of the name there?
- 1:14That wasn't, to be honest, we were struggling to think of a
- 1:16fun name. And I think, I think we came
- 1:18from the idea of like, like you said, it sounds like fantastic,
- 1:21but we thought we'd put the cast in there because it's a podcast.
- 1:24So we came up with Tracktastic, which again, it's and then we
- 1:28say, well, every every episode we intro it was with by saying
- 1:30we are the fantastic athletic. We call ourselves the
- 1:33Athleticos. That's how I like nickname.
- 1:36And that's, yeah, that's kind of how it kind of happened.
- 1:39I love that, I love that. And you kind of alluded to this,
- 1:41but you focus on. Tell us more about specifically
- 1:45what you focus on in as far as those countries.
- 1:47And then obviously, yeah, athletics, tracking field is a
- 1:50global sport. So it's going to be kind of hard
- 1:52not to get other maybe avenues in there.
- 1:54And but what maybe level are you looking more professional?
- 1:58We would call it collegiate, but maybe it's more club versus
- 2:02young. Tell us kind of that range of
- 2:03what you focus on subject matter wise.
- 2:06We, we, we mainly focus on the, the top tier.
- 2:09I guess we, we're all about the, the big events like the
- 2:11Olympics, the World Championships and I guess for us
- 2:13the European Championships as well.
- 2:15So it's kind of yeah, we, we mainly talk about the, the
- 2:18Diamond League, the the proper like high end level.
- 2:20But obviously that does kind of trickle down when we cover up
- 2:23the junior talk, like world junior championships and we and
- 2:27the US track and field championships, even though we're
- 2:29not American, we know that that is a great week of for us fans.
- 2:33We love watching the US trials because it's like for us, it's
- 2:36obviously in the middle of the night.
- 2:37We, you know, sometimes we stay up and we have like we're
- 2:39chatting on our WhatsApp group and we're all watching the, the
- 2:42drama from the US trials because there's always drama because
- 2:44it's first 3 past the post. And that's never, never a good.
- 2:47But like, when I think MO fell over in the US trials this year
- 2:50at the Olympics, you know, we would.
- 2:52We I was gasping when I screamed out loud about two in the
- 2:54morning. So yeah, we love, we love it.
- 2:57We love, love, Yeah, the the top tier of the sport, I guess.
- 3:00And yeah, but we don't look, we, we keep across every, every
- 3:02angle of it, I guess. I I think we're going to steal
- 3:04that as our slogan. There's the US trials.
- 3:06There's always drama. Oh yeah, that's that's pretty.
- 3:09Good. There's always drama.
- 3:11Describe your style. Is this Do you have a partners?
- 3:14Do you have do you have guests? Is this a solo podcast?
- 3:17Talk to us about the actual style of it.
- 3:19I mean, it's, it's weird because it's kind of like how it started
- 3:23was all quite organic because it was, I'll just give you a back
- 3:25story. We started in 2016 was when it
- 3:27we began. And so basically one of us, we
- 3:29all kind of followed, followed each other on Twitter.
- 3:31Twitter was a place where we went to for our to find all the
- 3:34track fans. And then we want someone was
- 3:36posted. Well, there aren't enough track
- 3:38and field podcasts. And then like I replied, said,
- 3:39yeah, maybe the reason is that maybe we should start one.
- 3:42And then someone else chipped into the thread and said, Oh,
- 3:43well, I've got the tech equipment to do it.
- 3:45If we do it over. We were doing it on Skype back
- 3:47in the day before Zoom became a thing.
- 3:50And then and that was it. And there was six of us that
- 3:52kind of with a core group. And we are the main ones that do
- 3:55it if we can. But sometimes it's three of us,
- 3:57sometimes it's four of us. And now we're kind of study
- 4:00expanding, having other people come on that we know from we've
- 4:02met at meets and other athletics fans that we know about and
- 4:05other guests. And, and just literally this
- 4:07week, our well, our latest episode that we've done early
- 4:11December was with the present. He's a athletics presenter.
- 4:14He presents for Eurosport and Discovery.
- 4:16So he was at the Olympics in Paris and as the main host for
- 4:19the athletics coverage. So it's kind of good to have him
- 4:22on. And I guess I go to a few meets,
- 4:25London Diamond League in the British Championships and I get
- 4:28accreditation and I just grab a few quotes from the the
- 4:31athletes. So I guess you could argue we've
- 4:33had Noah Lyles has been on the podcast, a few big names like
- 4:36that that we've just grabbed, just grabbed them in there in
- 4:38the mix zone and just got a few quotes from them.
- 4:41So it's yeah, we could have, it's a mixture of everything,
- 4:43but it mainly is just Ozlot chatting.
- 4:45Yeah, that's good. An average length of an episode.
- 4:49We are quite long because mainly because we don't, because it's
- 4:54hard to get us all together in one place.
- 4:55So we were called because we all live in different parts of the
- 4:58UK. We're not actually in the
- 4:59physically in the same room. So it's all done over Zoom and,
- 5:01and just getting us all aligned on one evening when we can
- 5:04record it. It's only like once a month and
- 5:06then, but we make up for it. We're making them.
- 5:08They're usually about 90 minutes.
- 5:10Sometimes, sometimes. In fact, our most listened to
- 5:13episode was two hours long. So it's just good to show.
- 5:16I, I'm not a believer in it should be so short because we've
- 5:20all got these short attention spans.
- 5:21I think it's podcasts. I think things you can come back
- 5:24to. You don't have to listen to only
- 5:25one go. It's, you know, you pick up
- 5:26where you left off and I noticed that Spotify now does like
- 5:29little chapters AI kind of works out.
- 5:31So you can just skip around. So it's, yeah, it's I I think
- 5:34the longer the better in my opinion.
- 5:36We, we might be podcast brothers, man 'cause I am in
- 5:38that same. That's what we started this
- 5:40originally of long form podcast. You don't, a book doesn't have
- 5:44to be read in one sitting. You know, it has chapters and
- 5:47you put it down and bring it back up.
- 5:48And that's the way I've always thought about podcasts.
- 5:50I love that. So you guys have been going
- 5:52since 2016 in podcast form. That has to make you one of the
- 5:58oldest track, track specific podcast.
- 6:01I mean, I've been around since 2020.
- 6:03We started right before the pandemic, before COVID.
- 6:06And I know that we're, you know, one of the older ones.
- 6:08I know there are older ones, but 2016?
- 6:11Yeah, because that's like I said, because we literally
- 6:14someone posted on Twitter there aren't any podcasts and we're
- 6:16like, well, let's let's do this. And we literally did.
- 6:18Our first one was just before the Rio Olympics.
- 6:20That was like our our debut was like, let's just preview the Rio
- 6:24Olympics and see what happens. We don't really know what we're
- 6:26doing. And now we've kind of evolved
- 6:29and I guess we're kind of finding our feet.
- 6:31We definitely found our feet now eight years in, but it's still,
- 6:34that was just like we didn't really know how it was going to
- 6:36work. And we were all listening back
- 6:37to those first episodes. We could tell we're a bit unsure
- 6:39of what we were doing, but I think people appreciated it.
- 6:43We've always said we're as we are fans of the sport.
- 6:45We've always said we we are fans and we're making it for the
- 6:48fans. So our slogan is like buy the
- 6:51fans for the fans. So it's kind of very much a
- 6:54niche fan podcast. Yeah, well, I, I love that.
- 6:56You know, I think a lot of people want to do something, but
- 6:59they want things have to be set up perfect.
- 7:01You know, air quotes there perfect.
- 7:03I I love the jump in figure it out.
- 7:05We're going to make air. I I like to every once in a
- 7:08while when I get a little too big ego of our podcast, I'll go
- 7:12back and listen to episode 1 and be like, yeah, don't forget,
- 7:14buddy, you had no, you were doing it from a phone.
- 7:16You had no idea. Yeah, so you gave us a little
- 7:19bit of background on the motivation.
- 7:21Your original idea and form has kind of stayed the same.
- 7:23I'd call you a panel type of podcast.
- 7:25You've got, you know, maybe a little bit of a rotating cast
- 7:28depending on schedules and things like that.
- 7:30You started alluding to this, you know, in business here at
- 7:33Gill, a lot of different types of people will buy equipment
- 7:36from us. We'll have parents that'll buy
- 7:38equipment, of course, track coaches buy equipment, athletic
- 7:40directors, We've had professional athletes call us up
- 7:43and and order equipment. But our ideal customer is for
- 7:47here in the, in the US high school and college track
- 7:50coaches. That's our ideal customer.
- 7:53Your podcast, there's going to be a lot of different people
- 7:55that might listen, but who are you actually?
- 7:57Who's your ideal listener? Who are you actually speaking to
- 8:01when you're working on your podcast there?
- 8:04I think it I think we are literally straight at the heart
- 8:07of the nerds and the nicest possible way we admit ourselves.
- 8:10We love, we're track and field nerds and we are we're gonna be
- 8:13mentioning names that the average fan won't know.
- 8:16We're going deep. We go, we go nice.
- 8:18We don't just, you know, we're not just surface level here.
- 8:20So we're referencing, I don't know, performances from 2013 by
- 8:24some random, I don't know, athlete from Slovakia, you know,
- 8:27that's that's the kind of level we go to.
- 8:29So we're we're not here to like, if you're an entry level,
- 8:32there's an entry level podcast. It's not maybe the best one, but
- 8:35if you're if you're really you're really into your your
- 8:38track and field, then yeah, we're very much there for you.
- 8:41As we get older, nerd becomes more and more of a compliment
- 8:44than what it was when we were teenagers.
- 8:46You know, now it's like, oh, you called me a nerd.
- 8:48Oh, that's awesome. I love that.
- 8:49Yeah. We're reclaiming it.
- 8:51That's right. Exactly.
- 8:52Well, when you talk about first time listeners for you, what has
- 8:56been you guys have, you know, a ton of episodes in the bank here
- 9:00since since 2016, what's been your favorite episode And maybe
- 9:03a different way of answering it could be what's been maybe the
- 9:06most popular episode. Maybe you can actually answer
- 9:09both if you'd like. I think, I think well, our most
- 9:11popular one, usually the way we do it, we always pre, we do a
- 9:15big preview episode for like they're usually our longest ones
- 9:18for a big championship. So the World Championships every
- 9:20summer and obviously the Olympics this year and those
- 9:22preview ones like what we're known for in a way that's the
- 9:26best way for people to look like if they haven't been across the
- 9:28season or the developments in track and field up until the
- 9:31championships. That is a good two hour podcast
- 9:33where you can really get yourself clued up of who's
- 9:35running what form they're in. And you know, we often do.
- 9:38We love predictions. We often we're out wild
- 9:40prediction to what's going to happen so that they're the ones
- 9:43we're known for. So I think our preview ones are
- 9:45usually our, our stronger ones and they are well, they're the
- 9:47most listened to because I think people want to get into the into
- 9:51the championships. And obviously we do our review
- 9:53ones as well, which are equally almost just as popular.
- 9:56But in terms of our favorite ones, I mean, every year we do
- 9:59like a Christmas special, which is more of like a review of the
- 10:03year, kind of like giving out some like silly awards.
- 10:06We don't do like serious ones like athlete of the year.
- 10:08We're more like who who wore the best outfit or who are the best,
- 10:11you know, what was the best blunder of the year, that kind
- 10:14of thing. And we often put a theme around
- 10:15it. So we've done like an Advent
- 10:17calendar one. We've done like A Christmas
- 10:20Carol. We did like a Dickens one where
- 10:22we went through, we assigned characters to athletes and we've
- 10:26done well. There's a pantomime, which is
- 10:28like a British tradition around Christmas.
- 10:29It's like a show. So we've done one of those.
- 10:31So our Christmas ones are a bit more chaotic and a bit more
- 10:34silly, but I think they often go down quite well.
- 10:36They become quite popular every year.
- 10:38Yeah, that's a lot of I might to steal some of those ideas.
- 10:41I like that. That's really cool doing a
- 10:45podcast, you've learned this, people listen and we certainly
- 10:49have super fans that have maybe listened from 2016 episode 1 all
- 10:53the way through, but most fans come in and out, you know,
- 10:56they'll maybe catch an episode drop off or two or whatnot.
- 10:59But we as the host were there through thick and thin every
- 11:02single episode. What have you learned over this?
- 11:05You know, 8 going on 9 years of podcasting as a host and and a
- 11:09group of host of of a podcast, obviously successful enough.
- 11:13We define success in a million different ways, but obviously
- 11:15successful enough that you continue doing it.
- 11:17What have you learned hosting a podcast about this great sport?
- 11:21I mean, we we do it because we love it.
- 11:22We just enjoy it. It's it's the fun element from
- 11:24Apple. We just love it.
- 11:25It's almost for us, it's a catch up with our friends and we just
- 11:27happen to record it. And we know that the people that
- 11:30listen to it are loyal audience. You know, they, we know they
- 11:33love it as well and they feel like they're part of that
- 11:35conversation. So yeah, I think that's that's
- 11:37kind of why we do it. And I guess what we've learned
- 11:40over the the years is obviously we've finessed kind of the
- 11:43structure a little bit more in terms of, you know, what we what
- 11:46we can talk each episode about. But like I said, it is kind of
- 11:48our preview episodes and our review episodes of a big
- 11:51championships. That is the heart of the
- 11:54podcast. And I think that's what people
- 11:55often listen to. What you say when people
- 11:57listeners come and go, that's usually when they come back to
- 11:59us is for those moments. And maybe we maybe lose them at
- 12:02this time of year when there's not as much going on.
- 12:03But that's what we try and do a a different style of podcast,
- 12:06like out of season. We do more of a serious debate
- 12:09or a chat about where the sport's at, what the future is
- 12:12and how we how we cover the sport.
- 12:14And yeah, more of those kind of serious ones.
- 12:16And maybe towards the end of the year and then as soon as the
- 12:19season gets run in like in January with that indoor season
- 12:21and then straight into the kind of outdoor season, it's, yeah,
- 12:25it's pretty non-stop. So you've learned like the flow,
- 12:27obviously our sport has a flow and so that dictates kind of a
- 12:30podcast flow. As well.
- 12:32Which you might have jumped in in 2016, said, Oh yeah, every
- 12:35week or however, you know, whenever you publish, it's gonna
- 12:37be a banger every time. And it's like, well, sometimes
- 12:39nothing's really going on, so maybe that episode isn't as
- 12:42choreographed or whatnot. So yeah, love that final two
- 12:45questions. So right now someone's listening
- 12:48on, you know, our most popular is Apple podcast, followed by
- 12:51Spotify, but there's many, many other podcast apps.
- 12:53What? Where can we find you guys at?
- 12:56Yeah, I think, yeah, we're saying we're on definitely on
- 12:58Apple and and Spotify I think similar, we kind of had our most
- 13:01listeners on Apple, but I think most of them are slowly moving
- 13:03over to Spotify because I guess that's just where most things
- 13:06are. And we get, we've had good
- 13:08numbers on Spotify in the last year.
- 13:10I think since it's Olympic here, we've almost doubled our
- 13:12subscribers in this last 12 months just because of the
- 13:15Olympics. And it's been good to see that
- 13:17on Spotify. And I think we're on, we're on a
- 13:19few of the, I don't know, we're on lots of, yeah, there's so
- 13:21many of them these days. Do you use a video component at
- 13:24all? Are you on YouTube or Vimeo or
- 13:26anything like that? No, we've never done video,
- 13:28mainly because it's just tricky with so many of us chatting and
- 13:31it's all I say. We're all on like a Zoom call
- 13:33and sometimes different Internet connections.
- 13:34We just try and keep the audio quality as good as we can.
- 13:37So we just remove the video element.
- 13:39But then, like I say, when I go to attract me, I'm in the mix
- 13:41zone and I'm interviewing an athlete.
- 13:43I'll do that as a video. Yeah, and that will be what,
- 13:46clipped up and I'll put on our social.
- 13:47So it's kind of a little bit different.
- 13:49So it's a bit of the podcast, but it's not like the actual
- 13:51podcast, if that makes sense. Love it.
- 13:53Well, you know, I'm a big fan of podcasts.
- 13:55You know, we talked about this before we hit record.
- 13:57You know, the average podcast listener listens to between 7:00
- 14:00and 10:00 different podcasts. And I certainly don't listen to
- 14:03all track podcasts. I have other podcasts I love.
- 14:05In the spirit of podcast, what is do you listen to other
- 14:09podcast? What's your favorite podcast
- 14:10that's not track related? Oh well, I'm a big tennis fan,
- 14:14so I usually go for the tennis podcast.
- 14:17It's the kind of the the big one.
- 14:19The big it's just called the the tennis podcast and that's again,
- 14:22British one and and that's been going that's I think that's been
- 14:25going since 2012. You know, I think it's really
- 14:27old. They were probably ahead of the
- 14:29curve and that's why they got such a big fan base.
- 14:30So those guys are going to go to for tennis.
- 14:32So I listened to that one quite a lot, especially during the
- 14:34Grand Slams because they do 1:00 every single day.
- 14:36So you can really get into the groove of what's been going on
- 14:39and you feel like you're immersed in it.
- 14:40So that's one of my favorites. And then I will, I will mention
- 14:44a track one as well because, because obviously I say we with
- 14:46Spotify, when we got Spotify wrapped as creators, we got told
- 14:50this year, well, other podcasts your listeners are listening to.
- 14:54And it's really funny because another track 1 was obviously
- 14:56the number one for us. And it was kind of like our
- 14:58friend, like our friends, we call them frenemies.
- 15:01It's called them the back straight boys podcast.
- 15:04They're the 22 twins have been big athletics fans for years.
- 15:07And they've again, I think they started that podcast about a
- 15:09year or so after hours. And we, we know them as friends
- 15:13as well. We see them at all the meets and
- 15:14stuff. And I'm always stood next to
- 15:15them in the mix zone at track meet.
- 15:17So, and actually literally this year here we had our our first
- 15:20collaboration where we did Oz and them together.
- 15:23After the years of like, you know, listening to each other's
- 15:25podcast, we finally got the time to actually join up together and
- 15:29do our own like collab special. So that was fun.
- 15:31So yeah, back straight boys podcast is my is my go to track
- 15:341. I love that.
- 15:35That's very cool. Well, listener, you're listening
- 15:36right now. My challenge to you is because
- 15:38we're wrapped up here, we're done for the day.
- 15:40So hit pause. The same app that you're using
- 15:43right now, there's a high, high probability if you just search
- 15:46tracastic, it's going to pop up. And maybe my challenge is, you
- 15:49know, he's got obviously they've got a deep, deep, deep library
- 15:52here. You mentioned you mentioned some
- 15:54of the holiday ones. So maybe go back and check out a
- 15:57holiday one to kind of entree into the podcast and see if you
- 16:00like it and then listen to their latest one.
- 16:03That's always kind of my gauge of how do I listen to a new
- 16:06podcast. I listen to their latest one and
- 16:08then I find one of their more popular back story ones and
- 16:11listen that way. But hit subscribe and that way
