- 0:09Speaker 1: FT resident GM. Jim Bowden is here. It's that time
- 0:12Speaker 1: of year, JB. We've marked it officially June and that
- 0:15Speaker 1: means we can start diving into trades. So it is
- 0:17Speaker 1: good to see you, and let's begin with the headliner.
- 0:20Speaker 1: If the Tigers don't play well over the next few weeks,
- 0:23Speaker 1: I know they've had a nice couple days here against
- 0:26Speaker 1: the Rays, what could we be looking at. We're going
- 0:28Speaker 1: to get right into biz with Trek Schooble. You put
- 0:30Speaker 1: out a great article in The Athletic about seven options.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Can you lay through or lay out some of what
- 0:35Speaker 1: you went over in the article and what you think
- 0:38Speaker 1: is realistic in terms of some of those teams and
- 0:40Speaker 1: what they can offer.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Scott, the most important thing if you're
- 0:44Speaker 2: the Tigers is, look, you want to turn this around.
- 0:47Speaker 2: You want to give this team another month, but you
- 0:49Speaker 2: can't wait to shop Trek's Scooble. Right, it's going to
- 0:52Speaker 2: be a free agent. You're not going to be able
- 0:54Speaker 2: to extend in between now and free agency, and you
- 0:58Speaker 2: don't want to sit there and get to August and
- 1:00Speaker 2: not be in the postseason and still have Scooble on
- 1:03Speaker 2: your roster. That would be a mistake. You know, you
- 1:06Speaker 2: don't want to set your franchise back. I remember three
- 1:08Speaker 2: years ago when the Angels should have traded showey Otani.
- 1:12Speaker 2: They did not. They could have gotten junior Cameron Aro
- 1:14Speaker 2: in a package, and it set them back years. And
- 1:17Speaker 2: so if you're the Tigers, start the process. Now. Figure
- 1:20Speaker 2: out what contending teams at interest, what top prospects are
- 1:24Speaker 2: on the table, what top prospects won't be on the table.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Try to figure out where you think you match up
- 1:29Speaker 2: the best, and go through the process. Exchange the medicals
- 1:32Speaker 2: that you have to do. Of course, the teams are
- 1:34Speaker 2: going to want to see Schooble on the mound pitching
- 1:36Speaker 2: like the Cy Young Award winnery was the last two years.
- 1:39Speaker 2: But don't wait on the process. And so I went
- 1:41Speaker 2: through in my two articles on Scooble, I went through
- 1:44Speaker 2: all twenty nine other teams to kind of figure out
- 1:47Speaker 2: what teams fit. I felt like there were six really
- 1:50Speaker 2: good fits. I threw in a seventeen just for fun,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and then just kind of broke it down from there.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Jim, how does a trade like this work? Look from
- 2:00Speaker 3: this Tiger standpoint and from other teams? You start working
- 2:05Speaker 3: on it now do these things come together at the
- 2:07Speaker 3: last minute, how much, how much pre evaluation, and how
- 2:11Speaker 3: much work has to be put in to make a
- 2:12Speaker 3: trade of this magnitude, because usually we see these happen
- 2:15Speaker 3: in the off season.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, So in a case like this, AJA, you start
- 2:20Speaker 2: your due diligence, which means literally, you're going to call
- 2:23Speaker 2: all twenty nine teams and you're going to tell them, look,
- 2:27Speaker 2: I hope we get back in the race. We think
- 2:28Speaker 2: we're going to. But if for some reason we don't
- 2:32Speaker 2: and we get to July, we're probably gonna move schoogle
- 2:37Speaker 2: at that time. If we do move them, do you
- 2:39Speaker 2: have interest, And if you do have interest, what level
- 2:43Speaker 2: of interest do you have. Do you have some prospects
- 2:45Speaker 2: that are off limits? Do you have major league players
- 2:48Speaker 2: that are off limits? Kind of let me know what
- 2:50Speaker 2: you think, and then a lot of them will say, yeah,
- 2:52Speaker 2: we'll give it some thought, we'll kick it around, we'll
- 2:54Speaker 2: get back to you. But you make the call to
- 2:56Speaker 2: all twenty nine teams. You don't want to leave one
- 2:58Speaker 2: out because you never know. Even though there's obvious teams
- 3:01Speaker 2: like the Giants and Angels that aren't gonna play, you
- 3:04Speaker 2: make the calls anyway, because that's your job. When you're
- 3:07Speaker 2: a GM, you can only deal with twenty nine other companies,
- 3:10Speaker 2: So you have to just make sure you've just touched
- 3:13Speaker 2: all the bases, and then you keep track of it
- 3:15Speaker 2: and you start the process, and you're gonna find pretty
- 3:18Speaker 2: early teams that are really interested, teams that are somewhat interested,
- 3:22Speaker 2: and then of course the teams that are most interested
- 3:25Speaker 2: are gonna be playing well between now and then as well.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I mean, this is gonna flip. Some of the teams
- 3:29Speaker 2: that are doing well now aren't gonna be doing well
- 3:31Speaker 2: six weeks from now. So it takes a while. It
- 3:35Speaker 2: takes a long time to answer your question. I have
- 3:38Speaker 2: done deals literally within five minutes. And I have done
- 3:42Speaker 2: deals it took three years.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Literally.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Ken Griffy Junior took three years when I traded for him.
- 3:47Speaker 2: But I also made a deal with Billy Bean where
- 3:50Speaker 2: he made one phone call, made an offer, I accepted it.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I traded Roberto Kelly for Deon Sanders with John Schrolz,
- 3:56Speaker 2: it took twenty minutes. So all these deals are different.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Some come to together quick. But when you're doing a
- 4:02Speaker 2: player at the level of Schooble, right, that's the one
- 4:05Speaker 2: Soto level. That's the level of OMG. You may win
- 4:09Speaker 2: the World Series because of it. It's the Justin Verlanders
- 4:12Speaker 2: traded from the Tigers to the Astros and they will
- 4:15Speaker 2: pop Champagne because of that trade. That's what Schooble is here.
- 4:19Speaker 2: And if you're the Tigers. The other thing you have
- 4:21Speaker 2: to look at is the earlier you trade them, the
- 4:24Speaker 2: better the return. If you trade them August third, the
- 4:27Speaker 2: other team's getting him for two months of the regular
- 4:29Speaker 2: season and October. If you trade him now, you're gonna
- 4:33Speaker 2: get July, August, September, and October you're gonna get four
- 4:37Speaker 2: months of him. And so the value changes, as does
- 4:39Speaker 2: the money change. The earlier you trade Schooble, the more
- 4:41Speaker 2: money you save.
- 4:43Speaker 5: That was gonna be my question where if he's healthy
- 4:47Speaker 5: at his first start. Obviously it's a little early, but
- 4:50Speaker 5: is there like a cutoff as far as like, okay,
- 4:53Speaker 5: we were gonna give you a top ten twenty, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 5: is it negotiated ahead time or is it just like, hey,
- 5:01Speaker 5: you're getting two extra starts if you go ahead and
- 5:03Speaker 5: make this move now. Also, do you see, because it
- 5:07Speaker 5: was written earlier that oh teams are gonna or the
- 5:10Speaker 5: Tigers are gonna have to pay some of this ten
- 5:13Speaker 5: or eleven million dollars that.
- 5:14Speaker 4: He's owed to be able to get the most.
- 5:16Speaker 5: And I shook my head like you just did, thinking why,
- 5:19Speaker 5: like this is the premiere pitcher in the game that
- 5:22Speaker 5: you would be able to get.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's nonsense. First of all, I mean you're going
- 5:26Speaker 2: to get someone to take the full contract. I think
- 5:29Speaker 2: the only point is there could be a team, let's
- 5:33Speaker 2: just say the Tampa Bay Rays. There could be a
- 5:35Speaker 2: team where if you pay two million of his salary,
- 5:39Speaker 2: we'll give you these two extra prospects. So you might
- 5:42Speaker 2: be able to quote unquote by prospects by doing something
- 5:46Speaker 2: like that. So if you're the Tigers, you're going to
- 5:47Speaker 2: be open minded. But in general, you're gonna get two
- 5:51Speaker 2: top ten prospects, and in general, the other team's gonna
- 5:54Speaker 2: pay the full salary and you'll probably get a package
- 5:56Speaker 2: of four or five players when it's all said and done.
- 6:00Speaker 6: Krats, I know you love dad jokes. This is not
- 6:02Speaker 6: a joke.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Ridges five and one Travel power Bank is the answer
- 6:05Speaker 1: to all of your messy wires all over the place issues.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred percent. I don't need more tube socks.
- 6:12Speaker 5: I need this because somebody is going to use my
- 6:15Speaker 5: phone that I fully charged and then dies halfway through
- 6:18Speaker 5: the softball game that I go to. So this will
- 6:20Speaker 5: lock it in and my friend next to me who
- 6:22Speaker 5: forgot to charge his phone.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Ridge makes life better. They revolutionize the wallet right now.
- 6:28Speaker 1: They're doing it with a portable charger. It solves all
- 6:32Speaker 1: of your issues. So many elite features, mag Safe wireless charging,

- 6:58Speaker 1: support our show and tell them we sent you, Jim.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Is there is there anyone else that besides Schooble that
- 7:06Speaker 3: you think is going to be a big name that
- 7:08Speaker 3: could be traded. I know schoopl School school, That's kind
- 7:10Speaker 3: of what everyone's talking about. Is there another big name
- 7:13Speaker 3: you think that could be traded.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I mean, I think Joe Ryan could be traded, and
- 7:18Speaker 2: that's not a rental. I think Robbie Ray of the
- 7:21Speaker 2: San Francisco Giants could be traded. We'll see what happens
- 7:25Speaker 2: to the Mets, but if you're not going to extend
- 7:27Speaker 2: per altn it sounds like they're far apart. He could
- 7:29Speaker 2: get traded. So, you know, none of us know. It's
- 7:32Speaker 2: way too early right the trade deadlines August third. Every
- 7:36Speaker 2: team wants to see where where they are going to
- 7:39Speaker 2: be at the All Star break, and then they're gonna
- 7:41Speaker 2: want to see where they are at the end of July,
- 7:42Speaker 2: in the very beginning of August. Right now, School is
- 7:46Speaker 2: the biggest name. But you know, Joe Ryan might and
- 7:49Speaker 2: School might not end up being traded, and Ryan might
- 7:51Speaker 2: end up being the headliner, or Robbie Ray may end
- 7:53Speaker 2: up being the best picture. None of us know this
- 7:56Speaker 2: far apart. But the point is, you have to start
- 7:58Speaker 2: your homework now. You can't wait. You have to start
- 8:01Speaker 2: the process here in June.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Hey, JB, I want to take a turn to the
- 8:06Speaker 1: Red Sox front office, because right now it doesn't look
- 8:08Speaker 1: like they will be buyers.
- 8:10Speaker 6: At the deadline. What do you think of all the
- 8:13Speaker 6: public posturing going on.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I mean, we saw theo Epstein kind of comment, We've
- 8:17Speaker 1: we've seen this story the other day about how Breslo
- 8:19Speaker 1: is now trying to like connect more with the players
- 8:22Speaker 1: even though he's been there for years, like I'm on
- 8:24Speaker 1: your side, you know, And of course in Boston a
- 8:27Speaker 1: lot of fans will just look at it as well,
- 8:28Speaker 1: he's too much into analytics.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Well, every team uses analytics.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Some teams just suck at it, and some teams also
- 8:33Speaker 1: don't know how to communicate with their coaching staff and
- 8:36Speaker 1: with their players. And then the last piece of the
- 8:38Speaker 1: puzzle here is we even have David Ortiz kind of
- 8:40Speaker 1: coming out John Henry's concerned whatever to me, that means
- 8:43Speaker 1: John Henry probably called David Ortiz and said, hey, you
- 8:45Speaker 1: should tell the media that I'm concerned. And you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: to me, there's a lot of that going on, which
- 8:50Speaker 1: is fun to follow. I know you like it too.
- 8:52Speaker 1: That's called a reality show, but in real life that
- 8:54Speaker 1: often hurts you from winning baseball games.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it does. I want to start with this. Theo
- 9:01Speaker 2: Epstein and Craig Breslow have a great relationship I know
- 9:04Speaker 2: there's been some reports out of Boston that they were
- 9:07Speaker 2: having communication issues. It was a problem there. I've reached
- 9:10Speaker 2: out to both of them. There is zero problem. In fact,
- 9:12Speaker 2: theo Epstein right now is at the French Riviera. He's
- 9:16Speaker 2: at the Monaco Grand Prix because his son's a big racer.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But you know, they've got Craig Breslo's back. Even though
- 9:23Speaker 2: everyone isn't going to agree, like every organization on a
- 9:26Speaker 2: lot of different things, their communication, the transparency, the honesty
- 9:32Speaker 2: between ownership, THEO John Henry and Craig Breslow is perfect
- 9:37Speaker 2: right now. They have his back, he has the rope,
- 9:41Speaker 2: he has the freedom to run this organization, which he
- 9:44Speaker 2: is doing. His approach and his style really is not
- 9:49Speaker 2: working for a lot of employees of the Red Sox
- 9:51Speaker 2: that were there before Breslo got there. There's a lot
- 9:54Speaker 2: of things, whether it be analytical or style of management
- 9:59Speaker 2: or you know, that isn't working. And Craig, you know,
- 10:02Speaker 2: this is his chance to be a GM. He wants
- 10:05Speaker 2: to succeed, He wants to do things his way and
- 10:08Speaker 2: he should have the right to do that. And so
- 10:10Speaker 2: he's got the backing to do it. And we'll see
- 10:12Speaker 2: how it plays out. You know, you have to win.
- 10:14Speaker 2: That's the bottom line at the end of the day.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Some of this communication stuff doesn't work well. There's a
- 10:20Speaker 2: lot of people that don't like Breslo, a lot of employees,
- 10:24Speaker 2: even broadcasters, and that creates ugliness behind the scenes and
- 10:29Speaker 2: it doesn't help. And when you have the kind of
- 10:32Speaker 2: coverage they do in New England on the Boston Red Sox,
- 10:36Speaker 2: it's just negativity. And I got to tell you, the
- 10:38Speaker 2: only solution of fixing it isn't going to be building relationships,
- 10:43Speaker 2: to be honest, it's going to be winning. You have
- 10:46Speaker 2: to win. If you win, it goes away. I remember
- 10:49Speaker 2: in nineteen ninety three, I had death threats. I had
- 10:52Speaker 2: planes flying over saying fire Boden. You know you had
- 10:57Speaker 2: to win. Now. We finished first the next two years,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and literally in nineteen ninety five a plane went over
- 11:02Speaker 2: the Bengals stadium and said hire Boden to be GM
- 11:05Speaker 2: of both. Like that's how quick it changes. And I
- 11:08Speaker 2: never had to pay for another meal in Cincinnati for
- 11:10Speaker 2: like ten years after that. But you have to win.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And I think with Craig Greslow, I think what he's
- 11:15Speaker 2: done on the pitching side, is really good. I think
- 11:18Speaker 2: their pitching is good enough to be a playoff team,
- 11:20Speaker 2: but their position player situation's not good. They haven't built
- 11:24Speaker 2: a good roster that way. Craig Grezlo and Alex Corey
- 11:28Speaker 2: didn't get along. Craig Grezlo didn't like his coaching staff.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Alex Corr said, well, you're not firing them without firing
- 11:34Speaker 2: me first. Okay, they did that, then, okay, here we go.
- 11:38Speaker 2: But when you make moves like that, you also now
- 11:40Speaker 2: got to figure it out. And they need bats, they
- 11:43Speaker 2: need offense, they need to build a lineup. They haven't
- 11:46Speaker 2: done it and they're not going to win until they
- 11:47Speaker 2: do that.
- 11:48Speaker 5: You talked about communication between Henry and THEO and Craig.
- 11:52Speaker 5: How about communication with Craig and the players or communication
- 11:56Speaker 5: with Craig and the media. He sounds like a I dictated,
- 12:02Speaker 5: like cyborg when he's out there talking about things that
- 12:04Speaker 5: people don't understand.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Is that how he is? Is that a Bill.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Belichick type of Well, I'm just going to do how
- 12:11Speaker 5: I do it and who cares what the media says?
- 12:14Speaker 5: And is that the right way to go about it
- 12:16Speaker 5: in a city like Boston, which is not Cincinnati, which
- 12:19Speaker 5: is not a small market.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, great point, Eric, And yeah, I mean that Craig
- 12:24Speaker 2: Breslow is who he is and that's good, bad, and ugly.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I mean, look, I've seen gms like John Schuerholtz, who
- 12:32Speaker 2: I have the highest respect for, who was Executive of
- 12:35Speaker 2: the Year. He's a Hall of Famer. He had the
- 12:38Speaker 2: philosophy of he never wanted to go down to the clubhouse.
- 12:42Speaker 2: He didn't want to build personal relationships with players because
- 12:45Speaker 2: he felt it would buy us his decision making. Brian Sabian,
- 12:48Speaker 2: who won three World championships with the San Francisco Giants,
- 12:51Speaker 2: had the same philosophy. He didn't want personal personalities to
- 12:56Speaker 2: get involved in a lot of decisions that he made.
- 12:59Speaker 2: And then there's a lot others like Dave Dombrowski. You
- 13:02Speaker 2: had a locker himself and would work out down there
- 13:05Speaker 2: in the clubhouse, and he wanted to be around and president.
- 13:08Speaker 2: He made all the road trips and was in with
- 13:10Speaker 2: the players, and that was his style. And by the way,
- 13:12Speaker 2: he's a future Hall of Famer as well. So there's
- 13:15Speaker 2: different styles that work. You got to make it work, though,
- 13:19Speaker 2: and you know, if you have a personality that doesn't
- 13:22Speaker 2: relate well to all the players. Then you need to
- 13:25Speaker 2: have an assistant that can be the conduit between you
- 13:28Speaker 2: and them to make it work. If you're not doing
- 13:30Speaker 2: well with the media, then you better have a manager
- 13:33Speaker 2: that can speak to the media on your behalf, or
- 13:36Speaker 2: you better have ownership that can back you on that. Obviously,
- 13:39Speaker 2: we all prefer to have executives that can do it all,
- 13:41Speaker 2: like theo Epstein did when he was winning those world
- 13:44Speaker 2: championships both in Boston and Chicago. Craig Breslo's learning on
- 13:49Speaker 2: the job. I think he's done a really good job
- 13:52Speaker 2: on the pitching side. He's got some work on the
- 13:54Speaker 2: position player, and he's got to build relationships and he's
- 13:57Speaker 2: got to get people on board, and I think he
- 14:00Speaker 2: needs to work on that area and I think he will.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Jim the Pirates had a situation not long ago with
- 14:09Speaker 3: one of their pitchers.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Have you ever been in a situation where you had
- 14:12Speaker 3: to put someone on a restricted list because they refused
- 14:14Speaker 3: to go to the bullpen? They refuse their role? What's
- 14:18Speaker 3: this mode of operation when this is something like this
- 14:21Speaker 3: goes down? Because I mean, I've heard of guys leaving,
- 14:24Speaker 3: but I've never heard of guys refusing to do whatever
- 14:26Speaker 3: they've been asked to do without then saying hey, I
- 14:29Speaker 3: want to trade.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great question because my eyebrows went up
- 14:34Speaker 2: when Ben did this, and I thought to myself, Wow,
- 14:37Speaker 2: why didn't I think of that? That's phenomenal, Like you
- 14:40Speaker 2: refuse to do it, so I put you on the
- 14:41Speaker 2: restrictive list. You don't get paid, you don't get service time.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Why did I think of that? That's what I said
- 14:46Speaker 2: when it happened. What I did in those situations is
- 14:49Speaker 2: I optioned the player out. And I don't want to
- 14:52Speaker 2: get into names, but it happened two or three times
- 14:55Speaker 2: in my seventeen years. Sometimes it went big leagues to
- 14:58Speaker 2: a ball or big leagues to but you know, I
- 15:01Speaker 2: try to explain to the player and communicate the fact
- 15:05Speaker 2: that you know, the contract says that you don't get
- 15:09Speaker 2: to choose the role. The manager's going to put you
- 15:12Speaker 2: in the role to help us win, and you need
- 15:14Speaker 2: to do that. Whatever that is. Doesn't always work like
- 15:17Speaker 2: you want. Now. I understand Ladziski his frustration. He was
- 15:21Speaker 2: pitching really well for Pittsburgh. Jerry Jones comes off the
- 15:24Speaker 2: injured list and they want to put him in the
- 15:26Speaker 2: bullpen because they consider him their sixth best starter. That's
- 15:30Speaker 2: the right decision to make by the manager in my opinion.
- 15:33Speaker 2: And lads Sky pitched a couple times in the bullpen
- 15:35Speaker 2: this year, and I think that is going to help
- 15:37Speaker 2: the Pirates win more games using him in that role
- 15:39Speaker 2: based on the team they have right now. He didn't
- 15:42Speaker 2: like it. Now. The one thing I tried to do
- 15:44Speaker 2: is I would have probably protected the player, not make
- 15:47Speaker 2: it public, just you know, give him twenty four hours
- 15:51Speaker 2: to emotionally get through it. And that's what happened with him.
- 15:54Speaker 2: He called his agent, he called his family, calmed down,
- 15:57Speaker 2: understood what his choices were going to be, and then
- 16:01Speaker 2: moved on. Some players asked for a trade. I would
- 16:04Speaker 2: not accommodate a player on a trade like that. I
- 16:06Speaker 2: would have optioned him out and let him sit at
- 16:08Speaker 2: double A, at double A money and see if he
- 16:10Speaker 2: changed his mind at some point. It was an immature response,
- 16:13Speaker 2: but I also understand his frustration, like, you want to start,
- 16:16Speaker 2: you don't want to relieve. I get it. He'll be
- 16:18Speaker 2: starting again. There's going to be an injury to summer
- 16:20Speaker 2: on the rotation, and he's going to be back in there,
- 16:22Speaker 2: probably within a month. That's just how it works in baseball,
- 16:26Speaker 2: As you guys know. I didn't like the way he reacted,
- 16:29Speaker 2: but I think what ben Cherrington did, Honestly, I thought
- 16:31Speaker 2: it was brilliant.
- 16:33Speaker 4: Jim.
- 16:33Speaker 5: I could you see you telling him, Oh, you want
- 16:35Speaker 5: to start Altuna needs the Altuna curve, need a starter
- 16:39Speaker 5: next week.
- 16:39Speaker 4: So good luck there.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Yeah bye, yeah bye.
- 16:43Speaker 5: That's not what I want to hear. But Carmon's not
- 16:45Speaker 5: a prospect anymore. Karen's that prospect anymore. But teams now,
- 16:50Speaker 5: and I know it's different when you were a GM.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Teams now call prospects up that into roles that were
- 16:58Speaker 5: roles that were that thirty year old guy that you
- 17:00Speaker 5: having triple A that you're gonna call up. If he
- 17:02Speaker 5: does well, great, If not well, dfa him.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Why do you think.
- 17:06Speaker 5: Teams are doing that? And do they not see that
- 17:09Speaker 5: as being detrimental to somebody's career. I mean they're doing
- 17:12Speaker 5: it to Jonah Thong right now. They have Bubba Chandler
- 17:15Speaker 5: got called up as a starter and then got thrust
- 17:18Speaker 5: into the bullpen to make his big league debut.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, the game's changed so much, right in
- 17:26Speaker 2: terms of roles and front offices just believe that, you know,
- 17:30Speaker 2: how can I develop them or how can I win?
- 17:32Speaker 2: And what situation? You know, he should put the opening
- 17:34Speaker 2: here so he doesn't have to face the first three
- 17:36Speaker 2: guys the first time around the lineup. That way I
- 17:39Speaker 2: can keep him in an extra two innings. Yeah, I mean, look,
- 17:43Speaker 2: we've seen you guys, remember with the Yankees with Jobah
- 17:46Speaker 2: Chamberlain and Phil Hughes, when they came up and they
- 17:49Speaker 2: they were using him start a bullpen kind of kind
- 17:53Speaker 2: of ruined their careers, I think the way they were used.
- 17:56Speaker 2: But everyone's looking at the science differently. Everyone's listening to
- 17:59Speaker 2: the medical and training staffs different I mean, the analytics
- 18:03Speaker 2: that are there, the technology, the science is being able
- 18:06Speaker 2: to measure things that we were never able to measure before,
- 18:09Speaker 2: is helping them make some of these decisions that don't
- 18:12Speaker 2: always make sense on the outside unless you're privy to
- 18:15Speaker 2: the data that they're looking at it and making those calls.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But yeah, I think the other factor that's that's going
- 18:22Speaker 2: on right now and the reason the guys are getting
- 18:23Speaker 2: the big league so quickly, is that when you look
- 18:25Speaker 2: at hit track and you look at the trade Jeck
- 18:27Speaker 2: pitching machines. You know, Andy Pajas spent the winner hitting
- 18:31Speaker 2: off of Paul Skins and Trek Scouble to try to
- 18:33Speaker 2: become a better hitter, right and to be able to
- 18:36Speaker 2: sit off the machines and watch their release points and
- 18:38Speaker 2: the different shapes and sizes and blow. I mean, that
- 18:41Speaker 2: kind of advantage you have is just incredible. And so
- 18:44Speaker 2: when they get to the big leagues, they're seeing these pitchers,
- 18:46Speaker 2: it doesn't seem like the first time because they've been
- 18:48Speaker 2: doing it off off you know, the machines. And then
- 18:51Speaker 2: you know, you look at what the Nationals are doing
- 18:52Speaker 2: leading baseball and run scored right now. I was in
- 18:55Speaker 2: their spring training camp and Paul Deboni was going through
- 18:58Speaker 2: all the different plans they had for each player and
- 19:01Speaker 2: what they were going to do, and the algorithms of
- 19:03Speaker 2: what they needed to work on and what they were
- 19:04Speaker 2: going to look at in terms of approach. And they
- 19:06Speaker 2: gave these kids homework and spring training, they went home, studied,
- 19:09Speaker 2: came back and embraced it. And now look at them.
- 19:11Speaker 2: They have more runs scored than the Dodgers and Yankees.
- 19:13Speaker 2: So you know, the game is changing for the better.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Players are being given an opportunity to succeed at a
- 19:19Speaker 2: level they would never have in the past. They would
- 19:21Speaker 2: have had way more learning curve at the big league level.
- 19:24Speaker 2: And I think it's fun to watch young players succeed
- 19:27Speaker 2: like they are because it really helps small market teams
- 19:30Speaker 2: win earlier when they don't have to wait for young
- 19:32Speaker 2: players to develop in two or three years.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Development is key Jim for a lot of these teams,
- 19:39Speaker 3: and we know that, But what about development coaches. The
- 19:42Speaker 3: Giants fired their third base goal. They didn't fire him,
- 19:44Speaker 3: I shouldn't say they reassigned him because he was making
- 19:46Speaker 3: too many mistakes. The Giants aren't any good. Well, you
- 19:49Speaker 3: didn't think they were going to be any good coming
- 19:51Speaker 3: in this year, So why would the front office and
- 19:54Speaker 3: Tony Vaytela, who I don't think got to pick most
- 19:56Speaker 3: of his coaching staff, why would they take their third
- 19:59Speaker 3: base coaches this early the season say, you know what,
- 20:01Speaker 3: you're not developing properly or sending too many guys home.
- 20:04Speaker 3: You're gonna have to do something else in the organization.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Yeah. I would have fired him too. I mean, your
- 20:10Speaker 2: job is to get him to score. Your job is
- 20:13Speaker 2: to make the right decisions to third base. And if
- 20:15Speaker 2: you can't do it. Sorry, I got to bring someone
- 20:17Speaker 2: else in the can. It's just like a player, right.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I mean, look, I hate watching coaches get fired. A
- 20:22Speaker 2: lot of times. It's unfair, you know, a lot of
- 20:25Speaker 2: times they take the fall for the manager or the
- 20:27Speaker 2: front office or whatever the case is going to be.
- 20:29Speaker 2: But still, I mean that's as you guys know. Third
- 20:31Speaker 2: base coaching is a hard job. But I can't have
- 20:34Speaker 2: my guys throwing at the plate consistently. I can't. I
- 20:38Speaker 2: can't have someone that's too aggressive. And if that happens,
- 20:41Speaker 2: if I can put someone there in that position that's
- 20:43Speaker 2: better and help me win more games and help me
- 20:45Speaker 2: have my base runners make better decisions, I.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Have to do it.
- 20:48Speaker 1: They always say, you got to win at the margins. Well,
- 20:51Speaker 1: if you're the Giants, you need even more than that.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So you better win at the margins and then some
- 20:55Speaker 1: to get yourself back in the mix.
- 20:56Speaker 6: So JB, good stuff.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Man, great catching up, and you appreciate it much more
- 21:00Speaker 1: on GM territory, by the way, all these kinds of topics.
- 21:02Speaker 6: So let's show that. Thank you, JB. And yes here
- 21:05Speaker 6: it is thank you. It's JB.
- 21:07Speaker 1: It's Jim and his son Trey together every weekend you
- 21:11Speaker 1: get a fresh episode, usually either deep into Sunday or
- 21:14Speaker 1: Monday morning, hitting a big weekend topic or this past
- 21:17Speaker 1: weekend they covered the CBA and the back and forth
- 21:20Speaker 1: battle between the players and the owners. Subscribe to it
- 21:24Speaker 1: on YouTube and them a follow.
- 21:25Speaker 6: Thank you.
