- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Friday.
- 0:16Congratulations on making it to the end of another week.
- 0:19So glad to have your company as today.
- 0:23It is a momentous occasion. Today we are going to tackle the
- 0:28longest Sam well in the book of Psalms, but it's also the
- 0:32longest chapter in the whole Bible.
- 0:36This chapter, this sum has got 176 verses.
- 0:42It's got what I hear you say. Yep, it's an absolute whopper.
- 0:46And this is not just this great big diatribe that that the the
- 0:51author of Psalms begins, but it's actually a poem like all
- 0:55the other Psalms and it's an acrostic.
- 0:58There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet and each of
- 1:02these 22 letters has got a stanza and each stanza is 8
- 1:07lines long and that makes 176 lines.
- 1:13That's right. It is all down to the simple
- 1:15maths. And today out of the 22 stanzas,
- 1:18we are going to read the first seven.
- 1:20This would take us such a long time to get through the whole
- 1:22thing, so we're actually going to break it up into three
- 1:25different sections and read it over the next three weeks.
- 1:29But this is Assam. That was written well.
- 1:32Scholars aren't exactly 100% sure, but they reckon it was
- 1:35either David, Ezra, Daniel, or Jeremiah, one of these great
- 1:40pillars of our faith. As they grapple with a really
- 1:44difficult time, they bring their challenges before God.
- 1:48And one of the great big themes that will go through all of
- 1:51these stanzas throughout this whole poem is that God's word is
- 1:57all sufficient. So what a cracker.
- 2:00So we are going to begin. And normally I don't read the
- 2:03headings because the headings aren't part of the original
- 2:06text, but I thought it might be helpful if I read the characters
- 2:10of the Hebrew alphabet as we go through so you can keep up with
- 2:14how many stanzas we will be reading.
- 2:17So today we are going to read verse one through to 56 of some
- 2:22119 Alif joyful are people of integrity who follow the
- 2:39instructions of the Lord, joyful at those who obey His laws and
- 2:44search for Him with all their hearts.
- 2:47They did not compromise with evil and they walk only in his
- 2:51paths. You have charged us to keep your
- 2:54commandments carefully. All that my actions would
- 2:58consistently reflect your decrees.
- 3:01Then I will not be ashamed when I compare my life with your
- 3:05commands. As I learn your righteous
- 3:08regulations, I will thank you. By living as I should, I will
- 3:13obey your decrees. Please don't give up on me,
- 3:17Beth. How can a young person stay pure
- 3:21by obeying your word? I've tried hard to find you.
- 3:25Don't let me wander from your commands.
- 3:28I've hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin
- 3:31against you. I praise you, O Lord, teach me
- 3:35your decrees. I have recited aloud all the
- 3:38regulations you have given us. I have rejoiced in your laws as
- 3:42much as enriches. I will study your commandments
- 3:46and reflect on your ways. I will delight in your decrees
- 3:50and not forget Your word. Gimel, be good to your servant,
- 3:57that I may live and obey Your word.
- 4:00Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in Your
- 4:03instructions. I am only a foreigner in the
- 4:06land. Don't hide your commands from
- 4:08me. I'm always overwhelmed with the
- 4:11desire for your regulations. You're rebuke the arrogant.
- 4:16Those who wander from your commands are cursed.
- 4:19Don't let them scorn and insult me, for I have obeyed your laws.
- 4:25Even princes sit and speak against me, but I will meditate
- 4:29on your decrees. Your laws please me.
- 4:32They give me wise advice, Daleth.
- 4:38I lie in the dust. Revive me by your word.
- 4:43I told you my plans and you answered.
- 4:47Now teach me your decrees, help me understand the meaning of
- 4:51your commands, and I will meditate on your wonderful
- 4:54deeds. I weep with sorrow.
- 4:57Encourage me by your word. Keep me from lying to myself.
- 5:01Give me the privilege of knowing your instructions.
- 5:05I've chosen to be faithful. I have determined to live by
- 5:08your regulations. I cling to your laws, Lord,
- 5:13don't let me be put to shame. I will pursue your commands for
- 5:18you. Expand my understanding, He
- 5:25teach me or decrease my Lord. I will keep them to the end,
- 5:30give me understanding and I will obey your instructions.
- 5:33I will put them into practise with all my heart.
- 5:36Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where
- 5:40my happiness is found. Give me an eagerness for your
- 5:44laws rather than a love of money.
- 5:47Turn my eyes from worthless things and give me life through
- 5:52your word. Reassure me of Your promise made
- 5:56to those who fear you. Help me abandon my shameful
- 6:00ways, for Your regulations are good.
- 6:03I long to obey your commandments.
- 6:05Renew my life with your goodness.
- 6:10Wow, Lord, give me your unfailing love, the salvation
- 6:16that you've promised me. Then I can answer those who
- 6:20taunt me, for I trust in Your word.
- 6:23Do not snatch Your word of truth from me, for Your regulations
- 6:27are my only hope. I will keep on obeying your
- 6:31instructions forever and ever have a walk in freedom, for I
- 6:36have devoted myself to your commandments.
- 6:39I will speak to kings about your laws and I will not be ashamed
- 6:44how I delight in your commands, how I love them.
- 6:48I honour and love your commands. I meditate on your decrees,
- 6:53Zion. Remember your promise to me.
- 6:57It is my only hope. Your promise revives me.
- 7:02It comforts me in all my troubles.
- 7:05The proud hold me in utter contempt.
- 7:08But I do not turn away from your instructions.
- 7:11I meditate on your aid. Old regulations, old Lord, they
- 7:15comfort me. I've become furious with the
- 7:18wicked because they reject your instructions.
- 7:21Your decrees have been the theme of my songs wherever I have
- 7:25lived. Have reflect at night on who you
- 7:28are, oh Lord. Therefore I obey your
- 7:31instructions. This is how I spend my life,
- 7:36obeying your commandments. Ah Lord, thank you for this
- 7:49armrest and their heart for you. Lord.
- 7:54So often when we hear commands, our shoulders drop and we sigh
- 7:59as we think more rules. But hear your word shows us
- 8:05differently, that the advice, the commands that you have for
- 8:08us in our lives are life giving and can actually fill us with
- 8:13joy as we reflect on you and your love for us.
- 8:18And that you step into the fray of our lives and you give us
- 8:23guidance. I love.
- 8:26Thank you for your commands. Thank you for the structure that
- 8:32you placed in our lives so that we can live each day knowing how
- 8:39to honour you with our daily activity.
- 8:42Holy Spirit, come and shape our hearts that we would find joy in
- 8:47following your ways. We pray all of this in the
- 8:51saving name of Jesus, Amen.
