- 0:00Speaking of fun, Jesse Fairbanks, the best hour, the
- 0:03best hour, certainly the best 20 minutes while Jesse Fairbanks is
- 0:07here. We always think that every week
- 0:08and I appreciate him being here. Jesse, by the way, walked in
- 0:10today wearing shorts because, well, let's see, May 7th.
- 0:15Why not? Is it warm out?
- 0:17I, I when I left this morning, it was, it was not warm.
- 0:22So you're just, you're just, do you have Tivas on too or no
- 0:25Tivas sandals? No tivas all.
- 0:27Right, well, he's, he's trying to think warm, ladies and
- 0:30gentlemen. He's trying to think spring for
- 0:31real. So join him.
- 0:33Where are those cargo shorts? Dust them off from the 1990s.
- 0:37All right, well, it's always a pleasure to have Jesse in, of
- 0:39course, for Maine Vintage Toys, which is at 650 Main St. in
- 0:42South Portland. He should visit it every single
- 0:44day and buy a whole bunch of stuff while you're there.
- 0:46How are things going in the store right now?
- 0:47Busy. I was starting to see tourists
- 0:50come in, which is great. Yeah.
- 0:51Yeah, a lot. Of see, Jesse likes the
- 0:53tourists. I do.
- 0:54I know many people in Maine are like, oh, it's tourist season.
- 0:57Yeah, I like to see 'cause we get a lot of repeat customers
- 1:00since we open, so we get to see them once or twice a year, which
- 1:03is really cool too. So you kind of, you know, like
- 1:05long. So regular tourists.
- 1:06Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:08It's cool to catch up with them and see them come in and how
- 1:12their year or you know, six months have been cause some come
- 1:15twice a year so it's kind of cool.
- 1:17Indeed well this is the time when they start to trickle up so
- 1:20not surprised you're starting to see some anything that that
- 1:23you're sort of hearing and seeing out there.
- 1:24I know you've been talking about cards being particularly popular
- 1:26recently still strong. I still.
- 1:28Strong as ever yeah, seeing still seeing a lot of vintage
- 1:32video game stuff, which is cool. We always enjoy that lot of, you
- 1:36know, a Nintendo Super Nintendo N64, a lot of handhelds.
- 1:41Which is what are you allowed to consider vintage?
- 1:44How far, how far in the past do I have to reach?
- 1:47Like is a PlayStation 2 like, you know what I mean?
- 1:50Like how well? I mean basically they consider
- 1:52vintage about 2025 year mark OK for.
- 1:56So we gotta go back to. It's very fluid with, yeah, with
- 1:59generational vintage, I call it. So for me, like a vintage
- 2:05console would be Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Yeah, I let PS1, you
- 2:11know, PlayStation One kind of come into that.
- 2:15But some people might consider see those.
- 2:17Are like 40 years old. Yeah, I know.
- 2:19I'm not sure that it really counts as vintage anymore.
- 2:21I mean. It's antique.
- 2:23Exactly right. It's like a historical remnant
- 2:27of a time long gone. You're like an ancient Egypt,
- 2:29Egyptian hieroglyphics or something.
- 2:32Well, anyway, Jesse joins us every week as we, of course,
- 2:35talk about what's going on in his store.
- 2:36Of course. But we also do some trivia for
- 2:38you, the listening audience, to get your brains turning this
- 2:41morning. And I do love a good bit of
- 2:43trivia. So you know if you are the
- 2:46caller who calls in to win the you get the question right.
- 2:50You get a Main Vintage Toys T-shirt by stopping by 650 Main
- 2:52St. and saying hello to Jesse in person.
- 2:55He'll get you some swag and that will be your victorious reward
- 2:59for getting the trivia right. 879-9426 is the phone number.
- 3:03So what is the trivia on this Thursday all?
- 3:05Right. This 1987 toy line and
- 3:09television series allowed kids to interact with their TV using
- 3:14toy vehicles and weapons that could actually shoot targets on
- 3:19the screen. Wait, what?
- 3:21What year? 1987. 87.
- 3:24This was one of my favorite favorite toys.
- 3:26Of 1987 allows you to interact with a show?
- 3:30Yep. By shooting stuff, yeah.
- 3:33Interested during the show? Was the light gun from Nintendo
- 3:36involved in this at all? That was probably the precursor,
- 3:39the light gun, 'cause they had their own separate vehicles and
- 3:43jets and stuff like that. 879-9426 If you think you know
- 3:47the answer to this question, call us now.
- 3:49I would love to actually. I don't have no, I have no idea.
- 3:52You, I'm sure maybe I'll recognize it when somebody
- 3:54answers it, right? But you got me on this one,
- 3:56that's for sure. You ever see how the light gun
- 3:58works, by the way? Yeah, 'cause it stops the TV,
- 4:01right? Did you ever notice when you
- 4:03shot it that like it there was a blink on the screen or whatever
- 4:06and that was them. It was kind of their cheating
- 4:08way of pausing and stopping it and then the light gun like
- 4:11looks at the pixels on the screen I guess.
- 4:14Well, it leaves one like bright pixel.
- 4:17And if you're aimed at that bright pixel, it it's a it's.
- 4:22A very creative way of doing that.
- 4:24I I never, I thought it was magic.
- 4:26I thought it was. I thought it was Wizards.
- 4:28This one was super cool because it would it would shoot kind of
- 4:31back at you because it had like a little thing that would shoot
- 4:37laser back at you and if your jet was hit, you would get so
- 4:42many points and then you lost so many points it would actually
- 4:45eject your figure out of the the jet which.
- 4:49Was kind of cool, very interesting.
- 4:50Well, you, I think you've stumped the people out out there
- 4:52in radio land here, 879-9426. Read the question one more time
- 4:56so people can once again ruminate on it and definitely
- 4:59not cheat and Google it. Definitely don't do that.
- 5:02What's the trivia? This 1987 toy line and
- 5:05television series allowed kids to interact with their TV using
- 5:10toy vehicles and weapons that could actually shoot targets on
- 5:14the screen. And this was actually the first
- 5:19TV series to use CGI characters in live action scenes.
- 5:24Really cost over $1,000,000 an episode, which is crazy. 1887
- 5:28need your calculator? What was that in today's?
- 5:31Money $1,000,000 you said that would that would probably be
- 5:35like $7,000,000 or it'd be a lot.
- 5:39So did you have to buy separate equipment to do this?
- 5:41You did, yeah. OK, so if you wanted to
- 5:42participate, you had to go buy something, whatever that
- 5:45something perhaps might be. 879-9426 If you know the answer
- 5:49to this trivia question, I think we might have our first victim
- 5:52coming up here in a second. Hopefully I stumped them.
- 5:55Well, you might. I mean, that doesn't mean it's
- 5:56right just 'cause somebody's in the in the pipeline.
- 5:59Let's see if Dave knows. Dave, what's your answer?
- 6:03I feel like it's something like Captain Power.
- 6:08Got it. Yeah, Captain Power.
- 6:10Captain Power. Yep, Captain Power, that was it.
- 6:13Soldiers of future. Soldier.
- 6:15Oh, that sounds a little bit. More to.
- 6:17It. Yeah, my kid and I got those.
- 6:20He was like 5 years old when that came out.
- 6:22And yeah. Wasn't that so fun?
- 6:25That was so cool. It was.
- 6:27It was very. Yeah, I thought that was like,
- 6:30the future is here. This.
- 6:34This will be every TV show in just a couple of years, right?
- 6:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. My son Troy, he, he loved that
- 6:40show. So yeah, it was good, but I.
- 6:42OK, Captain Power, but it's in what I knew.
- 6:45Captain Power in the Soldiers of the Future.
- 6:49That's amazing, yeah. So does that mean that we were
- 6:52the soldiers of the future like it was, you know, if you're
- 6:54participating in the. Story.
- 6:55It took place in 2137. 2137, yeah, alright.
- 7:01Just around the corner. Yeah.
- 7:02All right. Well, Dave, you got it, man.
- 7:04You're my you're, you're, you're, you're my savior here.
- 7:06Because I'm not sure anybody else was going to get.
- 7:07I had. Absolutely.
- 7:09No idea, do you remember it now? I mean, I remember the name, but
- 7:11I couldn't probably place, you know, if I I'd have to look it
- 7:14up and see if I could place. And thanks for the call, Dave.
- 7:16Make sure you stop by 650 Main St.
- 7:18Get up your get your swag, get your T-shirt.
- 7:21I'm not sure I could remember. I certainly don't remember like
- 7:24the characters or the look of it unless I Google and then maybe
- 7:27if I Google it I'll probably the.
- 7:30Soldiers of the future. 21. 47. The Legacy 40 of.
- 7:35The Metal Wars when man fought machine and machines won.
- 7:40Bio Dreads. Monstrous creations that hunt
- 7:43down human survivors. Bio dreads, digitize them.
- 7:47Digitize them. Yeah.
- 7:50Center of the bio dread empire. Oh my God.
- 7:53The fortress of Lord Dread. Well.
- 7:56It only lasted one season because of the high cost and the
- 8:00intense content for a kids show dealing with subjects like
- 8:04digitizing humans, which would be what AI right now I guess.
- 8:09So is that like, is that like turning like a a human being
- 8:12into a robot or is that like downloading their brains or
- 8:15something? What is that?
- 8:16I'm going to have to go check that back out again. 1987 See
- 8:19that's I think the reason I didn't know that is I was 6 that
- 8:24year. So, and I had was that on like
- 8:27NBC or like, was that on a regular station or was that
- 8:29cable perhaps somewhere? I think it was on a regular
- 8:33regular. Station.
- 8:33I watched Sesame Street when I was like 6 years old.
- 8:36I did not watch a lot of TV so I must have missed that.
- 8:39I was watching 321 contact I loved.
- 8:41That show, I can still do the song, man.
- 8:43Yeah, there was 21 contact. It's the season or whatever,
- 8:48whatever the words. Were.
- 8:50I missed that. That's a good.
- 8:51That was a good show. 321 contact, wasn't it?
- 8:53Yes, it was. It was part of that block.
- 8:54They had three. It was 321 contact.
- 8:57The one that had like math net and stuff on it or was that the
- 9:00other one? I'm not sure what was the one
- 9:03where the guy wore the body suit.
- 9:05Oh yeah. What was the name of that?
- 9:07There were there were like 2 shows like that and I'm trying
- 9:10the other one. I feel like it was right around
- 9:11that. Same.
- 9:13I don't know if it was on the same channel or what, but.
- 9:15I feel like 321 Contact was like the smarter of the two of them,
- 9:18like they were, they were actually trying to make you like
- 9:20learn things like math. I think the other one was more
- 9:22little entertainment or whatever.
- 9:23I'm thinking the one, the math net one I always liked though,
- 9:25'cause it was, it was Dragnet, but it was math net.
- 9:27So there were cops, but they didn't have guns.
- 9:29They had calculators and they always solved problems with
- 9:32math. And then they had, do you
- 9:34remember? Do you remember Math Man?
- 9:36Math Man was Pac-Man. Yeah, it was another skit.
- 9:38It was the same show. This is another skit that they
- 9:40did in it. And Math Man would have to like,
- 9:43you know, go around just like Pac-Man did to, like, eat
- 9:46numbers or something like that. But then he would come to an
- 9:48equation. It's like 7 + 11 equals 18.
- 9:52And if he, you know, he ate it, then he's, he survives and he
- 9:55keeps going or whatever. But if he got it wrong, then all
- 9:57the ghosts or whatever would start chasing him.
- 9:59That's good. That's a good time.
- 10:01I'm going to have to download a bunch of YouTube 32.
- 10:04One dude I've I've looked for some of this stuff before and
- 10:06that stuff is on YouTube. Like they have those old
- 10:09episodes for any show you can think of or kicking around there
- 10:13if you want to check them out you.
- 10:14Can find where in the world is Carmen San Diego that's.
- 10:16Another good one. That's a little 90s though.
- 10:19There he is, math man, Math man, Math man.
- 10:23That's beautiful. I think so.
- 10:29Oh, it was an equation. Like, is this right or wrong?
- 10:31Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:32And then he had to run away, and it was like a little storm.
- 10:34It was like a little tornado or something that was chasing him.
- 10:36Around I remember the math net thing, but I don't remember that
- 10:39part. Yeah, What was Danny?
- 10:40Does it say what show that was on the say what show Math Man
- 10:43was on 'cause it was the same. It was definitely the same one
- 10:45as as as Math Net. I thought I might have been
- 10:49three to one contact, but I'm just, I don't know.
- 10:52I'm ruminating. He's looking, he's Googling,
- 10:53he's seeing how fast he can find it.
- 10:56Probably not fast enough. Maybe maybe when we come back,
- 10:59Danny might have the answer to that question.
- 11:02Well, Jesse, as I always appreciate you being here.
- 11:04We unfortunately are out of time, so we do have to stop
- 11:06there. So let's take a quick break
- 11:08here. Make sure you stop by 650 Main
- 11:09St. in South Portland and visit Maine Vintage Toys, especially
- 11:12if you're Dave and you just won the T-shirt from the trivia
- 11:14contest. Let's head into The Newsroom,
- 11:16though, and get an update from Jason Taylor.
- 11:18Some of these questions have been very stumping the audience.
- 11:23It takes forever, so that's interesting.
- 11:25Square one TV. Square one TV I.
- 11:27Don't remember. That Yep, that was the other
- 11:29show. Remember the math net?
- 11:30Though Yep, that was it was on square, square one.
- 11:34That was the one. All right, Jason, now I've done
- 11:37it. So please take over, take the
- 11:39baton and.
