Transcript
- 0:51Speaker 1: A. We all welcome today's show. We got an interesting
- 1:02one today. We'll start, as usual with a few questions
- 1:05and answers from the classic work radio replies written by
- 1:09Father's Rumble and Cart back in the oh, I don't know, thirties,
- 1:14forties they went on. They did like four in the series.
- 1:17It is for a long time, very popular program in America,
- 1:20England and Australia and Canada. Very popular in Canada as well. Protestants, atheists,
- 1:27you name it would write in questions or I guess.
- 1:31At one point they even took call in so you know,
- 1:33as things progressed and challenged them to defend the Catholic
- 1:38teaching and they did a great job. And today we'll
- 1:42talk about angels, and you know, it's always very interesting
- 1:44to talk about angels. And then we'll get into back
- 1:48into follow Sparago's exhaustive explanation of the Catechism the Catholic Church.
- 1:52And we're still talking about the Mass, and this is
- 1:55the most important thing as a Catholic, you know, but
- 1:58this is the celebration of the Mass, and they'll be
- 2:01a very interesting topic as well. You know, Father of
- 2:05Sparago's work is just really great. I actually got a
- 2:09really nice message. You know, as I mentioned in last
- 2:11week's show, they've let me back on YouTube. So I
- 2:14got all the uncensored Catholic podcasts now up on YouTube,
- 2:18and people have been discovering the podcasts that had never
- 2:21heard it before. And one guy in particular or woman,
- 2:26I don't know, and a couple of comments along these lines,
- 2:29a couple of questions, but really, just you know, tell
- 2:32me about father Sparago. I'm wanted where can I get
- 2:34this book? This is fascinating and it really is, it
- 2:38really is. I've gotten some really great comments over the
- 2:42past few months working through this from cradle Catholics, you know,
- 2:45people that went to Catholic school and the whole bit
- 2:48fully catechized, and they're like, wait, I never heard this before.
- 2:52They the nuns didn't teach us this. You know, a
- 2:55lot of things were emphasized in the eighteen hundreds. His
- 3:00I think his book was published somewhere around eighteen eighty
- 3:03that we really fail on in katechisis and Catholic teaching,
- 3:08especially of students and young adults, but also of adults.
- 3:14That was really emphasized. You know, even just that recently
- 3:18one hundred years ago. People just kind of gloss over
- 3:21it or forget to think about it, or you know, well,
- 3:25we've had the infection of so much social justice crap,
- 3:29and that's what it is. We need to be teaching
- 3:32about angels and saints and the Mass and sin and
- 3:38purgatory and heaven and hell. We don't need to be
- 3:41talking about environmental justice. Frankly, I think anybody who talks
- 3:46about environmental justice, he's a swift kick in the ass. Okay,
- 3:50remember I am uncensored. I can say that I used
- 3:53to have a priest I met right after I converted. Boy,
- 3:56he was a shocker. All the priests I had known
- 3:58have been this very quoth, quiet, scholarly, very holy men.
- 4:02And here he was from Pittsburgh, and he cussed like
- 4:06a sailor, oftentimes right in his homily. And they actually
- 4:09moved him out of the church because he had a
- 4:11terribly hot temper, and they moved him on. But yeah,
- 4:15that was a shock. Wait wait, we can actually, but
- 4:18we're not supposed to. We're not supposed to use obscenity unnecessarily.
- 4:22That's not a good thing for Catholics to do. But
- 4:24apparently whoever catechized him never told him that. But you know,
- 4:29it's just a different culture. You know, it is a
- 4:31different culture. You're talking about Midwestern steel towns and such.
- 4:35They two ten or you know, New York, New Jersey.
- 4:38They don't seem to emphasize language as much as we
- 4:43might hear in the South. But you know, when it
- 4:46comes to so called environmental justice, I think it's just ridiculous. Okay,
- 4:49I am you might call a natural environmentalist. I'm a woodsman.
- 4:54I hunt and fish, I am an herbalist, I grow gardens.
- 4:58I am really big on clean air and water and good, rich,
- 5:02healthy soil and protecting habitat for animals. And you know,
- 5:07I'm a natural environmentalist. This whole justice aspect of it is,
- 5:12you know, just ridiculous. Bottom line is God made man
- 5:17stewards of the earth, and we have a duty to
- 5:19care for and tend and cultivate what He gave us.
- 5:23And no, you absolutely have no right to poison the
- 5:27air and water, to poison the soil. You know, for one,
- 5:32it's just an insult to God's creation. Now, that's what
- 5:36a Catholic teaching ought to be, especially when that degradation
- 5:42to the environment negatively affects other people, and people get
- 5:46cancer because of the chemicals you've been dumping in the water.
- 5:49That's not acceptable at all, but you know, well we've
- 5:56been through it before. I mean, the environmentalism taught in
- 5:59Catholic just in the universities these days, is really socialistic
- 6:03and astheistic at its core. I mean, they try to
- 6:06teach people that Jesus was a vegan, and if you
- 6:08just read your Bible once, you know he wasn't. I
- 6:11mean the first thing he did if the resurrection, well
- 6:14not the first thing, but like your third thing, I
- 6:15guess when he appears to the apostles down at the
- 6:17ocean where he helps him catch fish, is has them
- 6:21cook him some fish and he eats it. Now, that's
- 6:23the glorified risen body of Christ. During his life he
- 6:26not only ate a whole lot of fish, but at
- 6:29least at the Passover supper he was eating lamb. Okay,
- 6:33that's required to eat the Passover dinner. No way was
- 6:37Jesus vegan. In fact, in the Bible he warns that
- 6:40goes who say that it is sinful to eat meat,
- 6:44or that one should be a vegetarian, or representatives of
- 6:48the Antichrist. They're speaking for the devil, not for God.
- 6:52God ordered everything and we are to be stewards of
- 6:54the Earth, and that's the right view. Climate change is
- 7:01just that there is only a fixed amount of carbon
- 7:04in our world, in the earth, in the atmosphere, in
- 7:09the sea. There's only a fixed amount of carbon. And
- 7:12part of it's us. We're made of carbon. Okay, maybe
- 7:17things could get a little out of balance at times. Sure,
- 7:20maybe that's what killed the dinosaurs. You know, it looks
- 7:23like maybe a lot of volcanoes erupted, or maybe a
- 7:25bunch of meteorites hit the Earth. More than likely, if
- 7:27it was a bunch of metia rites, it was just
- 7:29a bunch of dust that clouded out the sun for
- 7:31a prolonged period of time and caused the earth to cool,
- 7:34and the plants they needed to eat died and then
- 7:37they died. Okay, things can get out of balance. But
- 7:40Mount Pinatubo, I believe, or Pintabo. This was in the eighties,
- 7:44I mean maybe what early nineties. I was a kid
- 7:47when this thing erupted. Boy, people were freaking out. I mean,
- 7:51the biggest volcanic eruption we had seen in a thousand years,
- 7:55and it absolutely filled the sky. In that one eruption,
- 7:59it put off more more gas and ash and dust,
- 8:02and more carbon was put into the atmosphere and noxious
- 8:07gases and all kinds of bad stuff than all of
- 8:10human had ever created since the dawn of man to
- 8:13the present day, or would ever create for the next
- 8:15million years. Put that in context, I mean when someone
- 8:18talks about cow farts or you know, your exhaust from
- 8:22your car causing global warming. In one eruption event, and
- 8:28it was over the course I think maybe three months,
- 8:31more carbon was put in the atmosphere plus really other
- 8:34really nasty stuff, I mean, bad stuff than all of
- 8:38humanity could ever or will ever produce. And what happened
- 8:43was I believe maybe one point three degree rise in
- 8:47temperature that lasted for about three months after the eruption.
- 8:52That was it. What happened, Well, where did all that
- 8:55gas go? What happened? Well, see, God made this really
- 8:58nice system where most of the earth is comprised of
- 9:02water and most of what's on land is plants. And
- 9:06what happens is that water evaporates and it goes up
- 9:11into the atmosphere of mccorns clouds, and those clouds basically
- 9:16gather all those dust and ash particles and such, and
- 9:20that becomes seeds that make rain. So all that mess
- 9:25that went in the atmosphere was washed out of the atmosphere,
- 9:27and all those plants on land breathe in essentially carbon
- 9:31dioxide and breathe out oxygen. So as long as we
- 9:37protect our planet against desertification, turning woods into deserts, and
- 9:44we need to do a better job of that, there's
- 9:45no doubt about it. And as long as we protect
- 9:50our water, and we need to do a whole lot
- 9:52better job of that with all its mainly it saw
- 9:54the plastics in the ocean right now, that's the issue.
- 9:59The system that God set up in his divine providence
- 10:03is self correcting, self caring, regenerative, and all we got
- 10:10to do, I mean, even in oh, the little ice
- 10:15age in Europe, you know, when Charles Dickens was writing
- 10:18and all the you know, the Christmas scenes have all
- 10:20the deep snow and everything. Everybody was burning tons of coal,
- 10:25all of Western Europe burning tons of coal to survive. Now,
- 10:29that was a natural thing for the temperature to cool
- 10:34down all of a sudden. The earth runs basically in
- 10:36cycles of warming and cooling, and that was a cool period.
- 10:39That was a short cool period. But all that coal
- 10:42they were burning didn't do a darn thing to increase
- 10:44the temperature of the planet. You know, let's this is
- 10:49not a matter of justice. Remember, life isn't fair. Life
- 10:55is not fair. You don't come into this world deserving
- 10:59a thing. If you have parents that take care of you,
- 11:02that's a gift from God. That's a grace that God
- 11:04gave you. If you have food to eat, that's a
- 11:06grace that God gave you on your own merits. Because
- 11:10we are in a fallen state, we deserve absolutely nothing.
- 11:13So let's get rid of this justice bs and just say,
- 11:18you know what, as Catholics, as Christians, and we can
- 11:21agree with Muslims and Jews and Buddhists on this and
- 11:23Hindus probably even you know atheists. They want to clean
- 11:28environment too. We need to be responsible stewards of the
- 11:34resources God gave us. It's like the talents in the Bible.
- 11:36God gave us these talents, we need to use them responsibly.
- 11:40All this justice crap is communism. That's communism, that is
- 11:44effect in fact of the Church, and it needs to
- 11:46be done away with. And now I'll get off my soapbox.
- 11:49You know. I actually, you know, I work in permaculture
- 11:51and as an herbalist and an outdoorsman and a woodsman
- 11:54a car of wooden spoons, and we baskets and make
- 11:57pottery and do all that kind of stuff. I live
- 12:00breathe this stuff, so I can go on a rant
- 12:02about the gosh how most of the initiatives that government
- 12:08and academia and nonprofits have done to try to help
- 12:12the environment have actually degraded and hurt the environment. And
- 12:15most of the things they're proposing now are so wrongheaded
- 12:20as it could, you know, cause the deaths of millions
- 12:22of people. But the unfortunate thing is many of these people,
- 12:26many of them in powerful positions, they want to kill
- 12:29millions of people. They want to and then they've specifically
- 12:33said it. I mean, from the eugenics movement, the progressive movement,
- 12:37the abortion movement, the birth control They want to get
- 12:41rid of a large segment of the population. And isn't
- 12:44it interesting? I mean, like Hillary Clinton said when I
- 12:48guess it was when she was first running for president,
- 12:50it could have been before then. She said she was
- 12:52an early twentieth century progressive like Margaret Sanger. Okay, what
- 12:57early twentieth century progresses belief Well, they believed that all blacks, Jews, Hispanics, Italians, Irish,
- 13:08all Catholics, Hindus, Chinese, Africans, of course Native Americans, we
- 13:15can put throw them in missing. Anybody, I don't know
- 13:19needed to be exterminated. That we needed to control the
- 13:22population of the planet. And the only people that needed
- 13:25to live on this planet were essentially white Anglo Saxon
- 13:28Protestants who were college educated and among the elite. And
- 13:34I think we can look at the United Nations and
- 13:38the World Economic Forum and et cetera, et cetera, very
- 13:41still much in that pattern basically in America was one
- 13:46of in England was where eugenics, the extermination of mass
- 13:50groups or the reduction of the population, and generic genetic
- 13:55engineering and all that began. Georgeard Shawl was should be famous.
- 14:03I guess most people have glossed over this, but he
- 14:05made a film where he's sitting there talking and he
- 14:09suggested the gas chamber to get rid of unwanted people.
- 14:13Anybody who had had blind, deaf, mentally handicapped down syndrome,
- 14:19they want him exterminated. That was then exported to Germany
- 14:23where you know, the progressives, the Nazis of Germany put
- 14:28it into action, killed six million people or so, went
- 14:32to the Soviet Union where they killed about thirty million
- 14:34people or so using such techniques, and then came back
- 14:38to America with the legalization of abortion, where we've killed
- 14:42more people than the Germans and Soviets ever dreamed of
- 14:46through abortion, birth control and what have you. And you
- 14:52know it is an absolutely evil force at its coret
- 14:57No one said, so, Hillary, you're saying you're a racist
- 15:00who wants to kill everybody who's has dark skin or
- 15:04as Catholic or Jewish. That would have been an interesting
- 15:08question for her to have to answer, wouldn't it. What
- 15:10did she admire in Margaret Sanger, the person who literally
- 15:15said all black people need to be exterminated through abortion
- 15:18and birth control? What did she admire about Margaret Sanger?
- 15:22That would have been an interesting question to answer. But
- 15:24of course we have a media that's on the side
- 15:27of the bad and not the good. So let's get on.
- 15:30Let's get on, all right, radio replies. Questioner asks, this
- 15:36limitation of the teaching authority of the Catholic Church the
- 15:38questions of faith and morals is very convenient, and they've
- 15:42just been talking about how old the earth might be
- 15:44and all that, and they said, you know, basically, the
- 15:45church doesn't have way in on that. The Church is
- 15:48concerned with faith and morals and theology and doctrine, and
- 15:52an answer, it's not a matter of convenience. Is a
- 15:54question of the will of Christ, who gave as much
- 15:57jurisdiction as he thought fit. And says, do you not
- 16:00teach that God's creative activities extended also to the production
- 16:04of angelic beings? And they say yes. Scripture often speaks
- 16:08of angels. Christ himself taught their existence. Human experience of
- 16:12their influence leaves no doubt on the subject. And it
- 16:15is reasonable that God should have completed the hierarchy of
- 16:17creative beings by producing purely spiritual creatures in addition to
- 16:22merely material and semi material beings. Not all evidence depends
- 16:26upon since experience. I have never seen an angel. I
- 16:29am not now in a normal condition to see one,
- 16:33and I do not expect to do so until I
- 16:35reach Heaven. I still want a material world, but I
- 16:39believe in the world of God, and God should know
- 16:43whether or not angels exist. Person says I do not
- 16:47believe anything without body, form or shape can exist, and
- 16:51he answers. The priest answers in that case, of course,
- 16:54you are purely a materialist, not only that you are
- 16:58an atheist, for such a assertion denies the very existence
- 17:01of God. God is a pure spirit and can certainly
- 17:05create beings of a purely spiritual matter. And this pure's
- 17:10the interesting part. After the man basically declared himself an
- 17:15atheist saying he does not believe anything that's purely spiritual
- 17:17can exist, he then identifies as a Protestant. And there
- 17:23is no uniform Protestant teaching on angels. Okay, some Protestants
- 17:29believe in angels, some don't. A lot of Protestants will
- 17:34say things like, you know, Grandma died and she's now
- 17:36an angel. No, that's not true. Angels and people are
- 17:40two totally different things. God created angels first and then
- 17:44human second. If Grandma died and went to heaven, she's
- 17:48now a saint. Okay, Now there are angels like Saint Michael,
- 17:52the arch Angel, who are also saints. All good angels are,
- 17:56I guess by net edition, in some degree of sainthood.
- 18:00But a human being can never become an angel, and
- 18:05the angels themselves are quite clear about that, as are
- 18:08the demons they hate. The demons hate the human race.
- 18:12The angels are astounded that God would give humans the Eucharist,
- 18:18among other things, the grace of redemption. Once an angel
- 18:23decides to be either good or evil, they can never
- 18:25change their mind. A human being can fail a thousand
- 18:29times and a thousand times be redeemed. It is a
- 18:33great honor. Yeah, so this person says. Our Protestant clergymen
- 18:40admit that angels are not personal beings, but says they
- 18:44are impersonal messages of or a good influence from God.
- 18:49And the priest's answers, that is but a concession to
- 18:53unbelieving rationalism, and it is quite against the word of God.
- 18:56Scripture insists that they are personal beings. Christ said, their
- 19:00angels always see the face of my Father who is
- 19:03in heaven. That's Matthew Agus eighteen ten. Messages and influences
- 19:08are not permanent and don't see Saint Peter says God spared.
- 19:13Saint Peter said, God spared not the angels who sinned.
- 19:16Second Peter two four. Impersonal influences do not sin. Person
- 19:22asks what form have these angels, and they answer, we
- 19:25cannot speak of the form or shape of purely spiritual beings.
- 19:29God has no form or shape. Shape supposes dimensional arrangement,
- 19:33and dimensions suppose quantity of matter. Angels can exert spiritual
- 19:38force and even will the action of natural physical forces,
- 19:44but only with God's permission. If at times they have
- 19:47appeared to men in bodily forms, they have but assumed
- 19:50appearances not proper to them, but most probably formed from
- 19:53the material atmospheric elements, in order to manifest their presence
- 19:57in a way keeping with men's lower level. And the
- 20:01person asks, so, then they are nothing like your wing statues,
- 20:04and they answer no. God told the Jews to carve
- 20:07angels with wings spread, to represent to men those swift
- 20:11spiritual beings to whom distances is nothing Exodus twenty five eighteen.
- 20:16But God did not say they are exact representations of angels.
- 20:21Person says, will you explain a little more clearly what
- 20:24angels are? And they answer, angels are purely spiritual beings.
- 20:28A brick is a purely material being. Man with body
- 20:31and soul is partly material and spart partly spiritual. God
- 20:36has no material body, and as purely spiritual. To complete
- 20:39the external manifestations of His perfections, he created beings of
- 20:43a purely spiritual nature, angels. The angels, then, are definite
- 20:48beings which have the qualities belonging to our souls, but
- 20:52not those of our bodies. Now, our souls have two
- 20:55chief faculties, intelligence and will, and these are possessed by angels.
- 20:59But since they are purely spiritual, they cannot be seen
- 21:02by our eyes any more than can God himself. And
- 21:06the question says, has everyone a good angel to defend
- 21:11and protect him? And they say yes. Christ took an
- 21:14ordinary little child and said, despise not one of these
- 21:17little ones. For I say to you, they're angels in heaven.
- 21:19Always see the face of my Father Matthew, eighteen ten.
- 21:22There is no reason why one child should have an
- 21:25angel appointed to guard it rather than another, and no
- 21:28reason why an angel, once appointed, should desert its charge
- 21:31during life. In fact, the farther child wanders from God
- 21:34as it grows up, the more need of a guardian
- 21:37angel's care and protection. And being a rationalist, of course,
- 21:41the person says, do not the lessons of earthquakes and
- 21:44similar disasters prove such belief in guardian angels to be
- 21:47humbug or nonsense, and they answer, no, angels are not
- 21:52supposed to stop earthquakes. They co cooperate in the work
- 21:55of our salvation, inspiring good thoughts and making us an
- 21:58easy one. Temptation suggests themselves. I do not disbelieve in
- 22:02angels because they do not do what they are not
- 22:05supposed to do. A guardian angel could where God's will
- 22:08prevent temporal calamities, but that is not ordinary and is
- 22:12not ordinarily to be expected. Temporal and natural events depend
- 22:16upon temporal and natural causes. Nor do temporal calamities really matter.
- 22:21It is the supernatural life of the soul that really counts.
- 22:24It is enough to remark that God has appointed certain
- 22:26supernatural means for our supernatural safety, and amongst those means
- 22:33are guardian angels. And finally, the person asks the Catholic
- 22:37burial service, asks God to bless the grave and sends
- 22:40his angel keep it. If there is an angel by
- 22:43every Catholic grave, what does he do there? And they
- 22:46answer all who Christians have to admit that God has
- 22:49done much for men by the mystery of angels. The
- 22:51body of a Christian is holy, it has been consecrated
- 22:55by baptism, and will one day rise again glorious and immortal.
- 22:59The Church speaks in a human way and confides the body,
- 23:01which the relatives cannot keep, to the custody of God's angels.
- 23:05It is a very beautiful thought. But when you speak
- 23:07of an angel by every grave, you evolve a difficulty
- 23:10from your imagination. An angel is not a creature subject
- 23:13to the loss of space. If you picture some dominutive,
- 23:16winged animals sitting perpetually upon a tombstone, you are entertaining
- 23:21a ludicrous thought. But such a picture in no way
- 23:24corresponds with reality, and there is not a Christian who
- 23:27would not laugh at your simplicity. An angel is a
- 23:30spirit whose being is not commensurate with space, and whose
- 23:33powers are of the intellectual and volitional orders. An angel
- 23:39could operate in London and New York at one at
- 23:41the same time, yet ever remaining in heaven. And when
- 23:44the Church commits a grave to the care of an angel,
- 23:46she asks that the angel may intercede for the soul
- 23:49which inhabited the body. We bury so with so much sorrow,
- 23:53and commits the body to its care also, since it
- 23:56will cooperate in the resurrection of that body as God's
- 23:59ministering spirit. It in due time. All right, Now, let
- 24:04me get to Father Sparago here. And as I always say,
- 24:09father Sparago was check. I'm not always well. I have
- 24:12no idea if I'm pronouncing his name correctly. It could
- 24:15be Spirago, it could be something else. But it's spelled
- 24:18s p I R A g O. So do get
- 24:22his book Ten Books offers him. You can find a
- 24:25used copy online much cheaper, you know, if it's in
- 24:28good condition, well worth having. But it's also available in
- 24:32archive dot org if you just want to read it
- 24:33for free. So the celebration of the Holy Mass, the
- 24:38holy sacrifice of the Mass is only offered to God.
- 24:42It may be offered to him with a fourfold intention,
- 24:46by way of atonement, a petition of praise, and of thanksgiving,
- 24:50a simple water here, oh, there we go. When we
- 24:57offer sacrifice, we acknowledge that he to whom we offer
- 25:01it is the author of all beings, a sovereign lord
- 25:03of all things, and that we consequently owe him homage.
- 25:08A sacrificial sacrificial act is therefore an act of adoration,
- 25:12which can be offered to no creative being, be he
- 25:15saint or angel. No one has ever offered sacrifice except
- 25:20to the true God, or to one to whom he
- 25:22erroneously supposed to be the true God. Under the old dispensation,
- 25:26there were various sacrifices, sent offerings, burnt offerings, sacrifices of praise, etc.
- 25:31We have but one sacrifice which answers all these needs
- 25:35to make. Atonement is pre eminently the object of the
- 25:37sacrifice of Mass. This is the chief intention for which
- 25:40it is celebrated. The sacrifice of the Mass is offso
- 25:44an immense potency. If we would ask for anything, No
- 25:49gift or favor is too great to be obtained by
- 25:51means of it. For what we implore is something finite,
- 25:55something created, whereas what we offer something divine, something infinite.
- 25:59It cannot be imagined that God, who is so generous
- 26:02that he richly rewards a cup of cold water given
- 26:05in his name, but will not reward us when we
- 26:07offer him the chalice containing the blood of his divine son.
- 26:11Saint Bonaventure says, if a commander is taken prisoner, he
- 26:15is not liberated into a large sum has been paid
- 26:18for his ransom. Now in holy Mass. We can say, behold,
- 26:22O Eternal Father, my only begotten son, whom all the
- 26:25earth cannot contain, is now a prisoner in our hands.
- 26:29We will not release him until that for which we
- 26:32earnestly implore of thee has been granted to us for
- 26:35his sake. The holy sacrifice of the Mass is also
- 26:38a sacrifice of praise that alone can be praised, which
- 26:41is praiseworthy. The more good there is a man, the
- 26:44more praise can be given to him. God is the
- 26:46supreme and infinite good. All the creatures he has made
- 26:50cannot praise him enough. Glorify the Lord, exalt him as
- 26:53much as you can, for he be above all praise.
- 26:58And I think that's ecclesiasticus, which is syrac. I don't
- 27:02think it's ecclesiastis sees being dyslexic, I cannot tell the
- 27:06two abbreviations apart. But I am believing this is ecclesiasticus,
- 27:11which you should have in your Catholic Bible under the
- 27:13name of Sirac. Yet there is one means whereby we
- 27:18can worthly praise God, and that is by the sacrifice
- 27:22of the Mass. Upon the altar. Christ praises the god
- 27:25Head as he ought to be praised, As neither angel
- 27:27nor saint, much less moral man is able to praise him,
- 27:31One single mask is more glory to God than all
- 27:33the angels and saints in heaven are capable of rendering him.
- 27:37The glory given him is as much greater as God
- 27:40is more exalted than his creatures. In no way can
- 27:43God be more honored by the spotless victim upon the altar.
- 27:47Christ instituted the Mass for this end, to enable the
- 27:51Church to give glory to God and other end. Another
- 27:56intention for which the Mass may be celebrated is to
- 27:59give God. Thinks if anyone has done the a kindness,
- 28:03says coach him, thou art bound to make him a
- 28:05fitting return, unless thou wout'st appear ungrateful. Now consider what
- 28:10countless benefits we have received from God, and think how
- 28:12admirably He has made the earth fashioned man, how he
- 28:16approves continually for our sustenance. Think above all of the
- 28:20work of our redemption, the institution of the Sacraments, and
- 28:23of many graces He has conferred on us. We will
- 28:26not say with tobias or we'll see, will we not, Yes,
- 28:31will we not say with Tobias, what wages shall we
- 28:34give him? Or what can be worthy of his benefits?
- 28:37Tobit twelve two. Again, you must have a Catholic Bible
- 28:41to have the Book of Tobit. Martin Luther removed Tobad
- 28:45from the Bible because he didn't think well, very very
- 28:49relevant today's show didn't he isn't it. He didn't want
- 28:52Protestants to believe that angels intercede from them. He also
- 28:57despise charitable acts of charity. I mean he literally boasted
- 29:02about killing people and not giving alms. Seriously. So the
- 29:07Book of Tobit, the archangel Rafael goes to help a
- 29:13devout Jew who gives a lot of to charity and
- 29:17helps him, heals him, helps his son, final wife. And
- 29:20you know, Martin Luther didn't like that, and that's why
- 29:23Protestants don't believe in angels like we do. Anyway, see
- 29:28that you have the sacrifice of the mass. Uh. Therefore
- 29:32it is in your power to make a worthy return
- 29:34for dibuying benefits. For as our Lord gave thanks to
- 29:38God at the Last Supper, he now gives thanks in
- 29:40the Mass. And the thanksgiving offered by God is infinite.
- 29:43Surpassing in value that of all angels and all mankind.
- 29:47It is the whole company of Heaven and all good
- 29:50men on earth. If the whole company of Heaven and
- 29:52all good men on earth were to unite with you
- 29:56in one unceasing act of thanksgiving, you would not give
- 29:59God's as much thanks as is rendered to Him in
- 30:03one Mass by his divine son. How great is the
- 30:06love of God towards us. Not only does he lavish
- 30:09innumerable benefits upon us, but at the same time he
- 30:12places with it in our reach an excellent means of
- 30:15repaying worthily the great blessings we have received. The holy
- 30:19sacrifice of Mass may also be offered in honor of
- 30:22angels and saints. When we offer Holy Mass in honor
- 30:26of the saints, it is the same as when a
- 30:28play is acted in honor of a prince. Although no
- 30:31illusion may be made in it to the prince, yet
- 30:34he accepts it graciously. Even so, the blessed take special
- 30:38delight in the Mass when it is celebrated in their honor.
- 30:41Although the passion of Christ alone is re enacted in
- 30:43it and is offered solely to God. When offered in
- 30:47honor of the saints. The Mass is essentially a sacrifice
- 30:50of thanksgaving and of petition, for we give thanks to
- 30:53God for the graces bestowed on the Saints, and beseech
- 30:56Him to grant us grace through their intercession. Masses celebrated
- 31:01with this intention, the accidental glory of the saints has increased,
- 31:04but not the degree of happiness they enjoy. Saint Gertrude
- 31:08often had Mass in honor of the saints, and they
- 31:10generally appeared to her to thank her. During the Mass,
- 31:13she was permitted to see them shining in greater glory,
- 31:16rating garments more of a splendid The renewed presence of
- 31:19her son upon earth also gives the Mother of God
- 31:22a thousand times more joy than all the psalms, litanys,
- 31:25and prayers you could recite in her honor, and doubtless
- 31:28she will show you special favor if you hear or
- 31:30celebrate Mass in her honor. The holy sacrifice of the
- 31:34Mass can also be offered for the souls of the
- 31:36departed who have been members of the Catholic Church and
- 31:38have not died in a state of mortal sin. Another
- 31:42book cut from the Bible by Martin Luther and his followers.
- 31:45Of course, the books of Maccabeeks, where they explained why
- 31:48we should pray for the dead. They didn't like that either.
- 31:51The Council of Trend expressly declares that the sacrifice of
- 31:54the Mass may be offered for the dead. It is
- 31:57unquestionably true that the departed may be assisted by holy Mass,
- 32:00that God is thereby induced to deal with them more
- 32:03leniently than their sins deserve. And that's according to Saint Augustine.
- 32:07From the earliest ages of Christianity, it was customary to
- 32:10offer the holy sacrifice for the faithful departed and give
- 32:12them a memento in every Mass, as is done now
- 32:15after the consecration. Tertullian states that this was the practice
- 32:19of the apostles themselves. We know that Saint Monica begs
- 32:23Saint Augustine to remember her the Altar of God after
- 32:26her departure. She was not concerned, says Saint Augustine, about
- 32:29the embalming or preparing of her body for burial. She
- 32:32was not solicitous about her sepulture or the monument be
- 32:35raised through her memory. Her only anxiety was that intercession
- 32:38which should be made for her at the altar. What
- 32:41a contrast to the Christians of present day. Holy Mass
- 32:45may not be publicly celebrated for non Catholics, such as
- 32:48Jesus and Protestants after their death. We cannot, says put
- 32:52Innocent the Third, hold communion after their death with those
- 32:56with whom we held no commune during their life. To
- 32:59offer that sacrifice for such persons by name, as we
- 33:02do for Catholic Catholics would be out of harmony with
- 33:05the Catholic teaching. It is, however, permitted to offer up
- 33:08Holy Mass privately for non Catholics, and it will avail
- 33:12them if they were free from mortal sin at the
- 33:14time of their death. The Holy sacrifice of the Mass can, however,
- 33:18be offered for the living, whether Catholics or non Catholics.
- 33:22Holy Mass may be said for the living. We know
- 33:24that it is well to pray for our brethren when
- 33:27we are present at the Holy sacrifice, and in every Mass,
- 33:29the memento is made for the living Father. Coachm tells
- 33:32us that prayers for others is far more Effication is
- 33:35efficacious if it is offered during the Mass, and we
- 33:38can even obtain the conversion of sinners by saying Mass
- 33:41or having Mass said for them. No better assistance than
- 33:45this can be given to the sick and dying. We
- 33:48may also offer holy sacrifice for unbelievers during their lifetime,
- 33:51because Christ died for all men, and the Church intercedes
- 33:54for infidels, etc. On Good Friday. The greater the number
- 33:58of persons from whom a Mass is said, the less
- 34:00profit it does does each individual derived from it. For
- 34:04this reason, priests are strictly forbidden to accept more than
- 34:07one gratuity for one Mass. From time immemorial, Mass has
- 34:11been offered for individuals, for it could not be supposed
- 34:14that a Mass which is said for hundreds or thousands
- 34:16of people could profit each one as much as if
- 34:19it were said for him alone. Not the priests alone,
- 34:23but all the faithful who are president Mass may offer
- 34:25the holy sacrifice for a special intention. The people who
- 34:29are present when Mass is celebrated offer it with the
- 34:32officiating priests. The priest offers a sacrifice in his own person,
- 34:36the people offer it by his hands. Hence, Saint Peter
- 34:39speaks of Christians as a kingly priesthood one Peter two nine,
- 34:43and the Jews of old were called a priestly kingdom.
- 34:45Exodus nineteen six. In the prayers of the Mass, the
- 34:49priest includes the people with himself, as those who offer
- 34:52the oblation or rite fra trade fraudres prayer of the brothers. Essentially,
- 34:59in fact, the priest must of necessity have someone to
- 35:02offer it with him, for on no account is it
- 35:05permitted to say Mass without a server who represents the people.
- 35:08And as those who assist it Mass are fellows sacrificers
- 35:11with the priests, it follows that their prayers have the
- 35:13same power as his. The faithful ought. Therefore, whenever they
- 35:17hear Mass, to offer it for some definite intention. This
- 35:20may be done either at the commencement of the Mass,
- 35:23or at the offer tory, or immediately after the consecration.
- 35:26Take heed, old Christian that in the Mass you frequently
- 35:29offer up the divine victim to his heavenly Father. The
- 35:32more often you do this, the more abundantly will you
- 35:34be enriched. Those who neglect thus to offer the Holy
- 35:38Mass in word or in thought lose much that they
- 35:41might gain. The due blessing of Mass does not consist
- 35:44merely in being present at it, but in uniting oneself
- 35:47in spirit to the priests who offers it. All right,
- 35:50we'll wrap it up there. It's very interesting, you know,
- 35:56convert Catholicism went through RCIA. I don't remember what it's
- 36:02called now, it's got a new name. But great priests,
- 36:06scholarly priest, wonderful priest gave me great books to read.
- 36:10No one ever mentioned offering up mass the sacrifice of
- 36:14mess for somebody or for an attention. No one ever
- 36:18mentioned me praying the Rosary for an attention, or praising
- 36:21the divine mercy for an attention intention or not attention obviously,
- 36:27or offering up my sufferings as penance or for another person.
- 36:33These were things not taught. I don't know if they're
- 36:35being taught in Catholic school now. Maybe you went to
- 36:38a really good one and maybe they did teach this.
- 36:39But in the eighteen nineties, Father's spiragos certainly emphasize these points.
