- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:15It is the 12th of November. Great to have your company as we
- 0:20continue to do what we do, which is read another chapter of God's
- 0:24Word every day. And we are working our way
- 0:27through the book of Acts at the moment and we are up to the 6th
- 0:32chapter of Acts, which is where the church starts to have
- 0:36problems. If you look around your church
- 0:38and you think, Oh my church is just a broken group of people,
- 0:43why isn't life easier in this community?
- 0:46Well, you're not alone here. We see the beginnings of things
- 0:48going wrong and what do people do?
- 0:51Well, the same thing that we do in churches all around the world
- 0:54for the last 2000 years. We come to God and we say God
- 0:58give us wisdom. How do we move forward through
- 1:00this challenging time? And then with God's wisdom, we
- 1:04act and step forward and continue to rumble and stumble
- 1:09our way through this, this thing called Christian community, this
- 1:13thing called church. So let's go back and see this
- 1:17very, very early church and hear how God was moving in them at
- 1:22that time as we read together Acts chapter 6.
- 1:36But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings
- 1:40of discontent. The Greek speaking believers
- 1:43complained about the Hebrew speaking believers saying that
- 1:46their widows were being discriminated against in the
- 1:49daily distribution of food. So the 12 called a meeting of
- 1:53all the believers. They said we apostles should
- 1:57spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food
- 2:01programme. And so brothers, select seven
- 2:05men who are well respected and are full of the spirit and
- 2:09wisdom. We will give them this
- 2:11responsibility. Then we apostles can spend our
- 2:14time in prayer and teaching the Word.
- 2:17Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following
- 2:21Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, Philip,
- 2:26Prochorus, Naikonor, Timon, Parmanus, and Nicholas of
- 2:32Antioch, an earlier convert to the Jewish faith.
- 2:36These seven were presented to the apostles who prayed for them
- 2:40as they laid their hands on them.
- 2:43So God's message continued to spread.
- 2:45The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many
- 2:49of the Jewish priests were converted too.
- 2:53Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, performed
- 2:57amazing miracles and signs among the people.
- 3:01But one day some men from the synagogue of freed slaves, as it
- 3:04was called, started to debate with him.
- 3:08There were Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Sicilia, and the
- 3:11province of Asia. None of them could stand against
- 3:14the wisdom and the spirit with which Stephen spoke.
- 3:18So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen, saying we
- 3:22heard him blasphemy Moses and even God.
- 3:26This roused the people, the elders and the teachers of
- 3:29religious law. So they arrested Stephen,
- 3:31brought him before the high council.
- 3:34The lying witnesses said this man is always speaking against
- 3:38the Holy Temple and against the law of Moses.
- 3:42We've heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy
- 3:46the temple and change the customs of Moses handed down to
- 3:49us. At this point, everyone in the
- 3:52High Council stared at Stephen because his face became as
- 3:58bright as an angel's. Oh Jesus, that you would be so
- 4:13evident in us, that people would stare at us too, in amazement
- 4:19because there is something so unconventional, so unworldly, so
- 4:25supernatural about our presence that they are drawn to ask what
- 4:30is going on. Ah, for that to happen, the Holy
- 4:34Spirit, we are going to need you to continue your work of
- 4:37transformation so that when the people around us are anxious, we
- 4:42can live in your peace. When the people around us have
- 4:46run out of patience, we can display your patience.
- 4:51When times are difficult, we can continue to be gracious and kind
- 4:57and open. Help us be beacons for your
- 5:04Kingdom priorities and your heart in the world that we live
- 5:08in, just like Stephen was during those days.
- 5:12Ah, we pray all of this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
