- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew McGovern for August 4th.
- 0:12Today is National chocolate chip cookie day.
- 0:15Is there a more universally beloved treat?
- 0:18Whether you're a crispy cookie person or on team chewy, and
- 0:23this is one of life's great debates.
- 0:26Today we celebrate what might be North America's most accidental
- 0:31masterpiece. And here in Canada, it's also
- 0:35British Columbia Day, a statutory holiday celebrating
- 0:39beautiful British Columbia. So while our American friends
- 0:43are munching on chocolate chip cookies, we're enjoying a long
- 0:47weekend celebrating this incredible province with its
- 0:50mountains, oceans, forests, and yes, some pretty amazing
- 0:54bakeries that make killer chocolate chip cookies too.
- 0:58The chocolate chip cookie was created by Ruth Graves Wakefield
- 1:01in 1938 at her Toll House Inn in Massachusetts.
- 1:06But here's the beautiful part. It was a complete accident.
- 1:10Ruth ran out of Baker's chocolate for her cookie recipe.
- 1:13So she broke up a Nestle chocolate bar into the dough,
- 1:17thinking it would melt and create chocolate cookies.
- 1:21Instead, the chunks held their shape and boom, culinary history
- 1:26was born. Sometimes the best things in
- 1:30life happen when our original plans fall apart completely.
- 1:34Which brings us to today's quote from Bob Ross, who once said we
- 1:39don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents.
- 1:44Now, Bob Ross wasn't talking about baking.
- 1:48He was teaching us to paint landscapes and encouraging us to
- 1:51embrace the unexpected brush strokes.
- 1:54But as wisdom applies perfectly to Ruth Wakefield's kitchen
- 1:56discovery, she wasn't trying to revolutionize desserts.
- 2:01She was just trying to make do with what she had.
- 2:05And isn't that just like life? You run out of the ingredient
- 2:10you think you need, you improvise with what's available,
- 2:13and sometimes you create something even better than what
- 2:17you originally planned. Like those moments when your GPS
- 2:21fails and you discover a beautiful scenic route.
- 2:25When your first choice college rejects you and you end up
- 2:28somewhere that changes your entire life trajectory.
- 2:32When you're forced to pivot at work and stumble onto your true
- 2:36calling. The chocolate chip cookie
- 2:39reminds us that some of our greatest breakthroughs are
- 2:42disguised as inconveniences. Ruth's mistake became
- 2:46Massachusetts official state cookie and one of the world's
- 2:50most popular treats. So today, when something doesn't
- 2:55go according to plan and something probably won't
- 2:58remember Ruth and her chocolate chip revelation, maybe what
- 3:02feels like a set back is actually setting you up for
- 3:05something sweeter. And here in BC, we've had our
- 3:09own happy accidents, like how the 2010 Winter Olympics in
- 3:14Vancouver were supposed to be a huge financial risk, but ended
- 3:19up showcasing our province to the world and leaving us with
- 3:22incredible legacy facilities and infrastructure.
- 3:25Sometimes what looks like a gamble turns into something
- 3:28beautiful. That's going to do it for today.
- 3:31I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 3:34tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:40with another daily quote.
