- 0:22SPEAKER_00: One of the most helpful perspectives we can adopt as writers is understanding that we don't have an objective view of reality.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Now, this is hard to hear because most of us naturally believe that we see things as they truly are.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: We assume that we see ourselves and everybody else clearly as they are.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: We trust that our perceptions about our giftedness and other people's talent is basically our target.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: But let's be honest, that's almost never the case.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Truthfully, we tend to underestimate our own potential while overestimating everybody else's.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: In other words, we think everybody else deserves success while we don't.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Not everybody sees the world this way, of course, but most writers seem to.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: When we see other people succeed, we believe they deserved it more or probably are more talented than we are.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: But the reality is that they probably just worked harder or had better connections or they were more creative with their marketing.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So the question is, why not you?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Why shouldn't you also get to experience the success?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Is there any reason you shouldn't be just as successful as the next person?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, after all, they're no more deserving than you are.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: In fact, none of us deserves anything in this life.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: We all start with nothing, and we will exit this life, not being able to carry anything with us into the next realm.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Success in your writing doesn't have anything to do with what anybody deserves or doesn't deserve.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Success comes as a result of the actions you take consistently over time.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Now, yes, some people are more connected, some have more resources, and so forth, but all of that is irrelevant.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: So don't ask why them.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Instead, ask why not me.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Success doesn't come to those who deserve it.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Instead, it comes to those who work for it.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: A big thanks to today's sponsor, Thumbprint Creative.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: You've probably heard the saying, don't judge a book by its cover.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: But in the book world, it's absolutely not true.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: People do judge the quality of a book by its cover, and in fact, the cover design is the first thing people notice about a book.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: That's why my graphic designer of choice is Christy Griffith, owner of Thumbprint Creative.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I worked with Christy for many years, and she's designed covers and interior layouts for my own books, my ghostwriting clients, as well as lots of books for friends that I've sent her way.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Christy works closely with you to design a layout that perfectly captures the theme and genre of the book.
