- 0:01Speaker 1: For all you mad bastards running the Big Show podcast,
- 0:06Speaker 1: get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Or raw doggies. Four to seven every weekday. On Radio
- 0:15Speaker 2: Hotech here. Oh, good night.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Hello.
- 0:22Speaker 2: How are you going, fellas? You all good?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Much better today. I was down in the dumps yesterday, fellas.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Were you? I'm back. Oh, that's good, man. I'm back today.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I don't have many down in the dumps days. What
- 0:30Speaker 3: were you down in the dumps about? Just a bit
- 0:32Speaker 3: of stuff going on.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Just life, man.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Just life, you know? Just people, man, you know?
- 0:37Speaker 2: The one thing I will say, Mogi, and the good
- 0:39Speaker 2: thing about life is everything passes. Everything does. Even the
- 0:42Speaker 2: shit stuff. And even the good stuff. So even when
- 0:44Speaker 2: you're having a great day, just know this.
- 0:47Speaker 3: There's a shitter.
- 0:47Speaker 2: There is an absolute shocker coming your way.
- 0:50Speaker 3: That's right. So don't enjoy the highs. No.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Yes.
- 0:53Speaker 3: But just know that when you're sitting that low, possibly–
- 0:57Speaker 3: A high is coming.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah, but right after that high, another fucking low, way
- 1:00Speaker 1: worse than this one.
- 1:01Speaker 2: What I like to do is really indulge in the
- 1:04Speaker 2: lows and really wallow in it. And then when I'm
- 1:08Speaker 2: going through a really good patch and I'm high, the
- 1:12Speaker 2: whole time I think, oh, this isn't going to last.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, can't expect this to last.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, this is going to fall apart very soon.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Genuinely, my brain is the complete opposite of that. Yeah.
- 1:21Speaker 1: So I'll be like, hi, hi, hi. This is normal.
- 1:23Speaker 1: This is normal that a bad thing happens. I'll be like, what?
- 1:26Speaker 1: They'll be like, hey, we're back again.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:28Speaker 1: But it is interesting. You're one or the other, aren't you?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Who, me personally? No, everyone. Yeah, well, of course.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Why be one or the other?
- 1:34Speaker 3: I'm happy.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Positive. I'm positive.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'm a positive person as well.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I'm certainly not, Dave.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I'm positive, but I've also, I just don't. It doesn't
- 1:46Speaker 3: bother me. You know, like bad stuff will come along.
- 1:48Speaker 3: It's like, that's okay.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I'm okay with that.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I'm very much like that now. I mean, not all
- 1:52Speaker 2: the time.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Much better.
- 1:53Speaker 2: But most of the time I'm like, oh, well.
- 1:55Speaker 3: What the fuck. You used to be very anxious.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yes, I was.
- 1:57Speaker 3: About things. Yes. You've done a lot of work, Jase,
- 1:59Speaker 3: over these last few years.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And now I'm like, that's all good, man. Yeah. KZ
- 2:04Speaker 2: will sort it out for me.
- 2:06Speaker 3: And it's not all good. No, of course it's not.
- 2:09Speaker 3: But at least you're able to look at it from a– Oh, God.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You know, you're not doom and gloom in it.
- 2:16Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Oh, g'day, Matt.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Oh, hi, mate, yeah.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Look, if you want the chance to win all our
- 2:28Speaker 4: on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation,
- 2:34Speaker 4: tune in to the Hauraki Big Show, four to seven
- 2:37Speaker 4: weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio.
- 2:42Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show podcast. I found recently... that I
- 2:47Speaker 1: am a very happy, very chill person, but it's because
- 2:50Speaker 1: I've worked very hard to make my surroundings very secure. Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:54Speaker 3: As soon as anything fucks with it, you're in trouble.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Well, that's why right now, because I've sold my house,
- 2:58Speaker 1: and I'm looking for a new one. Nothing's come up.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I don't have anywhere to live in a couple of months,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and I'm like, fuck.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yeah, that wouldn't bother me at all.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And then, Jase, the other day we were at golf.
- 3:06Speaker 1: He was talking about going from working paycheck to paycheck.
- 3:11Speaker 1: like of acting gigs and stuff to then moving into
- 3:13Speaker 1: radio and it being a secure thing. And I was like,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I can't fucking imagine just sitting there like, man, I
- 3:17Speaker 1: hope another acting job comes along.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Could never do it. It would fucking do my head in.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And go for months. Well, no, I was very lucky
- 3:24Speaker 2: because I had a lot of voice work as well.
- 3:26Speaker 2: which really tired me over.
- 3:28Speaker 1: But even that, you don't know if there is another way.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Well, that's right. But the thing was, and I've talked
- 3:34Speaker 2: about this before, but the difficult thing was you'd do
- 3:37Speaker 2: a job and then it would take two months to
- 3:39Speaker 2: be paid.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And then you're fucked. That's right.
- 3:42Speaker 3: That's right. And then there's also, and this is kind
- 3:44Speaker 3: of contract stuff, and I still have these conversations with
- 3:47Speaker 3: my mates now who work in film, where you don't
- 3:52Speaker 3: know if there's another film coming in.
- 3:53Speaker 2: No.
- 3:54Speaker 3: And if it does come in, you don't know if
- 3:55Speaker 3: you're going to get a job on it. And so
- 3:57Speaker 3: and then often what happens is you've got X amount
- 3:59Speaker 3: of time off, but you don't know how long that
- 4:01Speaker 3: you're going to get another job. But you don't know
- 4:03Speaker 3: when that job is. And I'm talking contracting. So working
- 4:05Speaker 3: is on set or in production or something like that.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And then you get a phone call. It's like, can
- 4:10Speaker 3: you start on Monday? So you haven't been able to
- 4:13Speaker 3: enjoy any of that time off because you think, ah, fuck,
- 4:16Speaker 3: maybe I've got six months off. Maybe I've got three.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You're treading water almost.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Well, you're just being careful because you don't know how
- 4:23Speaker 3: long the money's got to last. But if you knew
- 4:26Speaker 3: going between, it's going to be a month. It's like, fuck,
- 4:28Speaker 3: I'm going to have an awesome holiday for a month. Yes.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It is stressful. It is a stressful thing.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Like it's great because you've got a bit of freedom
- 4:34Speaker 1: if you want it.
- 4:35Speaker 3: And it used to be that you would get paid
- 4:36Speaker 3: a lot more than you got in the normal world,
- 4:38Speaker 3: but that's not the case anymore in film.
- 4:39Speaker 2: That's true too. Unless you work.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Fuck loads of hours. And that's the other thing in
- 4:44Speaker 3: film is a normal week is 25% longer than a
- 4:49Speaker 3: civilian job. So a normal week in film is 50 hours.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:53Speaker 3: 10 hours a day. You think, so fuck, I'm rolling it.
- 4:55Speaker 3: But any job, if you chucked another 25%. salary on
- 4:58Speaker 3: top of it, you're probably going to go all right.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Like my daughter works as crew in film and stuff.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Fuck they work long hours, man. She's exhausted all of
- 5:08Speaker 2: the time. It's just hardcore. She's there at like 5.30
- 5:12Speaker 2: in the morning. She leaves at 6.30, 7 at night.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So similar to us then.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, similar to us. They've got to pack everything in,
- 5:19Speaker 2: sort everything out. The actor's swanning, oh, I'm so over it. Oh,
- 5:24Speaker 2: that's you.
- 5:26Speaker 3: That's you.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Oh, I can't be bothered. Somebody get me a coffee.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You do your scene, you're brilliant, and then you leave.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And then, you know, the crew.
- 5:38Speaker 3: And then before you know it, you've gone from number
- 5:40Speaker 3: nine on the call sheet.
- 5:41Speaker 2: To 44. Fuck.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's an oddly specific brand.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I was so fucking fired up today on the computer
- 5:49Speaker 2: trying to sort shit out, right?
- 5:51Speaker 3: I wish I was there, man.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You know what I did? This is truly what I did.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I went online and went rental property, Russell.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Russell.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Because there's some fucking beautiful places out there. You should
- 6:07Speaker 2: look up there, Kenzie.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I've got a story for you, but I can't tell
- 6:10Speaker 3: it on here.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Sorry, so that was all because of, are you going
- 6:12Speaker 1: to talk about this yarn on the radio?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Well, yes, I can.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I think you should.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I put it in the chat, but I don't want
- 6:18Speaker 2: to be specific about what job it is.
- 6:20Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And in actual fact, to be fair, it's not just
- 6:24Speaker 2: this job. It's the way it is now. With everything.
- 6:27Speaker 2: With everything. It's like, can you fill out this? Can
- 6:29Speaker 2: you do this? Can you do that? Just confirming.
- 6:31Speaker 3: No, I can't.
- 6:32Speaker 1: You having to put a password in to log into
- 6:35Speaker 1: a site was enough to make you look up rental
- 6:37Speaker 1: properties in Russell.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It was a bit more involved than that, Keezy, and
- 6:41Speaker 2: it wasn't just one thing I had to do. And
- 6:43Speaker 2: there was no password. There was no password. For fuck's sake,
- 6:49Speaker 2: there was no password.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Did you log into the rental property site?
- 6:53Speaker 2: Yes, I did. That was fine.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Did you have your password?
- 6:56Speaker 2: And I tell you what, there was, and I kid
- 6:59Speaker 2: you not, it was like the first- Where was that?
- 7:01Speaker 3: Rental properties in- Russell. Yeah, good on you.
- 7:03Speaker 2: The first property I looked at was like my dream
- 7:08Speaker 2: come true. It was a little cottage.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Have you got jokes going through your head now, Keezy?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Something about moving in with a guy called Russell, but
- 7:15Speaker 1: that's all I've got.
- 7:17Speaker 2: It was a little cottage right next to the beach.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And I just went, ah, fuck. It was 500. Wendy J.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Cottaging with Russell.
- 7:24Speaker 2: $ 580 a week. And I went, I.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Gamed it out.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Living with six other people. Six other young professionals.
- 7:34Speaker 2: How long would I last?
- 7:35Speaker 3: Now, this is the trouble, isn't it, is that you've
- 7:37Speaker 3: got to fill up the coffers again. Unfortunately. Well, you
- 7:41Speaker 3: and I are going to die soon, Jase. It's not
- 7:43Speaker 3: soon enough, some would say. Not soon enough.
- 7:46Speaker 1: But also, I think old hoity J, you should go
- 7:49Speaker 1: and live up there for like a month or some shit.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, go get a short-term
- 7:53Speaker 1: rental or something.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Well, no, actually, but having said that, I mean, I
- 7:56Speaker 2: only do that when I'm massively stressed out. I love
- 8:00Speaker 2: being in the CBD. It's great. It's awesome.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I think going from, for example, your family batch to
- 8:07Speaker 1: the CBD is quite nice because you can switch off
- 8:09Speaker 1: and then come back and it's alive and then switch
- 8:11Speaker 1: off again.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah. We were meant to go to the batch this weekend,
- 8:14Speaker 2: my wife and I, but she forgot to ask her dad.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And I think someone else is there now. Fuck.
- 8:20Speaker 3: You must have been fuming. How was that around the
- 8:22Speaker 3: Horty house? It would have been fucking quiet coming from
- 8:25Speaker 3: old Horty J. Old Horty J is keeping his lips sealed.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I saw his wife apparently after the bollocking she got.
- 8:31Speaker 1: She was so stressed, she started looking up rental properties
- 8:33Speaker 1: in Russell.
- 8:34Speaker 2: No, it would be Coromandel for her.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Would it?
- 8:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm going to go to the Coromandel this year.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Beautiful.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I haven't been for years. Yes. Decades.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Like when?
- 8:45Speaker 3: Honestly, late January is going to be my aim.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, after. Nice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. After.
- 8:51Speaker 1: It fucking rules. I love Cook's Beach, man.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't been there, honestly, since I was 17
- 8:57Speaker 3: years old. We went and stayed at Hahei. Yeah, it's
- 9:00Speaker 3: pretty packed now. Yeah, we got a, we were staying
- 9:03Speaker 3: at a camping ground, met a bunch of mates. What
- 9:05Speaker 3: year was that?
- 9:06Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 9:07Speaker 3: And then got the ferry over the road and the
- 9:09Speaker 3: exponents were playing on this particular night.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Oh, how good.
- 9:12Speaker 3: So we got in there about midday. One of our mates,
- 9:14Speaker 3: two of our mates went on a, like a ride
- 9:18Speaker 3: in a little airplane.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Sick.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Little fucking acrobatic number or something. Was that in Whitianga?
- 9:23Speaker 3: This was, they did it from the Hahe. Oh mate,
- 9:26Speaker 3: Whitianga it was.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's where the airfield is. Or it's Pawanui is
- 9:29Speaker 1: the other airfield.
- 9:29Speaker 2: You'd be right.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Because we came from Hahe and we came across the
- 9:32Speaker 3: water there.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And you went across the ferry. So that's mean.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So Cooks Beach and Hahe are cool. Cooks is my
- 9:35Speaker 1: favourite because you can drive, hop on the ferry for
- 9:38Speaker 1: seven bucks, go to Whitianga, go to the pub, nice dinner, blah, blah, blah.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And then that ferry back across to Cooks Beach where
- 9:43Speaker 1: it's chill again.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Just on that, by the way, a really good
- 9:47Speaker 2: friend of my wife's, who she worked with, said to
- 9:50Speaker 2: her this week, actually, they've got a place in Cooks Beach.
- 9:54Speaker 2: And they said, if you guys ever want to use it,
- 9:57Speaker 2: help yourself.
- 9:58Speaker 1: And does that extend to us?
- 9:59Speaker 2: No. That's great.
- 10:00Speaker 3: That sounds good. I'm keen.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Because we can go there and get hammered.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Well, speaking of hammered, so we went to this pub
- 10:07Speaker 3: while we waited for our mates to go on the flight.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I drank 10 jugs in two and a half hours.
- 10:12Speaker 1: When was this?
- 10:13Speaker 3: When I was 17.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Right. And 10, like the plastic.
- 10:18Speaker 3: 10 one litres.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 3: So 30 beers. And the locals, because it was just
- 10:24Speaker 3: a pub, you know. Yes. They were quite impressed by
- 10:26Speaker 3: us because we drank like animals. Yes. But then I
- 10:29Speaker 3: passed out in a cubicle in their toilet for four hours.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:35Speaker 3: They could not move me. Door locked. I'm in there.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I am out.
- 10:39Speaker 3: I am comatose.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Are your pants down?
- 10:42Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I knew what I was doing. I went in there
- 10:44Speaker 3: and puked for a while and then nice cold porcelain
- 10:47Speaker 3: on the face. Nothing quite like it.
- 10:49Speaker 2: A little bit of a lie down.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Nothing quite like it. And then I went back in
- 10:52Speaker 3: the car, had a sleep over there. Then came back
- 10:54Speaker 3: over completely sober now for the exponents. But all my
- 10:58Speaker 3: mates are still there and they are hammered now. They've
- 11:00Speaker 3: been drinking for 11 hours.
- 11:01Speaker 1: And you're like, fuck these guys.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Look at these lads.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Come on, guys. Pull yourself together. For God's sake.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and then we ended up going back, did that,
- 11:08Speaker 3: then went and slept in the car overnight. And then
- 11:12Speaker 3: in the morning, one of the boys drove, actually woke
- 11:15Speaker 3: up in the morning and one of our mates was missing.
- 11:17Speaker 3: We're like, where is he?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Where is he?
- 11:19Speaker 3: And there was a toilet block, a public toilet over
- 11:24Speaker 3: the road.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Yes.
- 11:26Speaker 3: And we went around and he was passed out. on
- 11:28Speaker 3: the other side of this toilet block. He wasn't in
- 11:29Speaker 3: the car. I'm like, what were you doing? He goes, oh, man,
- 11:33Speaker 3: I just woke up. I just woke up, but I
- 11:35Speaker 3: didn't know where I was. And I was just walking around.
- 11:37Speaker 3: He was walking round and around this public toilet looking
- 11:41Speaker 3: for the zip. He thought it was the tent.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 11:47Speaker 3: So he was looking for the zip. And the reason
- 11:50Speaker 3: why we stopped there was because one of the boys
- 11:52Speaker 3: drove and got done DUI. Right.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Wow. Not good.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Not good.
- 11:57Speaker 2: No.
- 11:57Speaker 3: We all fell asleep in the car and then woke
- 11:59Speaker 3: up and the cops had pulled us over.
- 12:01Speaker 1: No good. Well, do you be looking to recreate that
- 12:04Speaker 1: in late Jan?
- 12:05Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, I'll be looking for the zip.
- 12:08Speaker 2: I used to go.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Looking for the zip.
- 12:10Speaker 2: That's fucking shockingly bad.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I thought he meant the zip in his pants to
- 12:13Speaker 1: go piss.
- 12:13Speaker 4: No.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Without a tent flap.
- 12:14Speaker 2: We used to go to Pawanui for our holidays when
- 12:17Speaker 2: we were kids. And I hadn't been back there for ages.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Went back there and.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Went, what the fuck? Completely changed. It's a suburb.
- 12:25Speaker 2: It's a subdivision, yeah. It's like Omaha.
- 12:28Speaker 1: And Jerry Wells owns... 57 houses there.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that doesn't surprise you, does it? All one, I
- 12:34Speaker 2: can't remember.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah, all one.
- 12:34Speaker 3: One or the other.
- 12:35Speaker 2: One or the other.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Hey, listen to the big show, 4-7 weekdays, Radio Hauraki.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Good listening.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Good on you.
