- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Hey, all right, welcome to the
- 0:34podcast. I'm so glad you're here and this
- 0:36is this your first time joining us?
- 0:38My name is Bryce and this is living with Parkinson's, The
- 0:40good, the bad and the Reality. I have a wickedly cool show with
- 0:45show with you. I have a quick, quickly good.
- 0:48What the heck am I trying to say?
- 0:49I have a great show, great podcast for you to watch or
- 0:53listen to. It's a really special episode.
- 0:56And we have, I have a lot of guests and this is the first.
- 0:58I'm really nervous. As you can tell, I'm super
- 0:59nervous. I've never had this many guests
- 1:01on before. And they're backstage right now
- 1:03and they're probably, they're primed and they're working on
- 1:05some stuff because stay tuned. This episode is going to blow
- 1:08you away. This is, have you ever thought
- 1:11about the things that we have to do?
- 1:13So everybody tells us with Parkinson's, we have to
- 1:15exercise, you know, and you hear that?
- 1:17How many times have you heard that you have to exercise?
- 1:19You got to do this. You got to keep your brain
- 1:21smart. You got to, you know what?
- 1:22The only thing is, I can't find anything that's fun or I've been
- 1:25looking for things that are fun to do things that, you know,
- 1:28and, and then don't get me wrong, I, I'm not criticizing or
- 1:31not, not not jumping on those that love to run and walk.
- 1:34And if you find that fun, that's great.
- 1:36I don't, I, I don't. So I'm looking for things that
- 1:39A, are good for me and good for my Parkinson's, right?
- 1:43And B, that are fun and kind of are light and not as heavy
- 1:47because it's, you know, this life with Parkinson's is heavy.
- 1:49And guess what? I found one and it's the coolest
- 1:52thing ever. And they're joining us today.
- 1:55And I, I don't know if you've ever done this before any of
- 1:56you, I want you to make sure in the comments as soon as I bring
- 1:59them up and start talking about this.
- 2:01Have you ever heard of Improv for Parkinson's?
- 2:04And if you have, have you ever tried it?
- 2:07Well, today we're gonna do like We're gonna bring him on.
- 2:09We're gonna find out why Improv for Parkinson's is good for
- 2:11people with Parkinson's and their caregivers.
- 2:13Maybe, possibly, who knows, maybe we'll talk him into that.
- 2:15And B, what was B? What was B?
- 2:19Why is why? Oh, and we were going to
- 2:21actually play and we're going to do some demoing and you can play
- 2:23along at home or, you know, as you're listening or as you're
- 2:26watching, it's going to be a lot of fun.
- 2:27So I'm going to start bringing up my guests here.
- 2:29And again, bear with me here. It's I've never done, I've never
- 2:32had this many people. So this is really cool.
- 2:34And the first person to bring the stage is Rosemary Morrison.
- 2:37Rosemary, welcome to the broadcast.
- 2:38Broadcast and Rosemary's with improv from Work and Wellness.
- 2:43Yeah, there it is, all that cool.
- 2:45I love the swag. I love thank.
- 2:47You thank you for that in Canada featured on.
- 2:50Oh my God. Thanks for having us, Grace.
- 2:53Well, I my pleasure. Well, let's bring up and your,
- 2:55your, your partner in crime here, Dan.
- 2:57Oh. Hello.
- 2:58Dan, how are you from Improv for Work and Wellness?
- 3:01You guys have the same shirt that's.
- 3:02Perfect. One of us is gonna have to
- 3:04change. We're gonna No, I love it.
- 3:06Are you kidding me? I wish.
- 3:07I wish we I was that coordinated with with people, but we're
- 3:11gonna have to do a swag drop, like a swag switch.
- 3:15Yeah, 'cause I got some stuff and we can do that.
- 3:16And guess what, We have another guest and I hope I say her in
- 3:20the last name, right, 'cause you know, I only just call her
- 3:22Morgan. But this is Morgan Buchall from
- 3:25Parkinson, Canada. Did I get it right, Morgan?
- 3:28Almost Morgan Buchall. It's that German last name.
- 3:33Well, you know, Buchall sounds a lot better than what I said
- 3:37right there and then. And then the next person we're
- 3:40going to bring up is actually, I don't know if anybody's bet.
- 3:43Yeah, you bet it better on the other podcast, my wife, Carmen.
- 3:46Hi, Carmen. How are you?
- 3:47Hi. Hi, everybody.
- 3:50Hello. Carmen, Hello, hello.
- 3:52Something went like terribly wrong here because I'm looking
- 3:54at the screen and you're like, my wife's sitting out in the sun
- 3:57somewhere under like a thing. And I'm down in a dungy studio.
- 4:00So like, I don't know where, I don't know how where this thing
- 4:03fell off the rails, but this is gonna be a really cool
- 4:06broadcast. And I'll be honest with you, I
- 4:08brought my wife on on purpose because we were talking about
- 4:11doing this podcast and everybody on this, everybody, if you're
- 4:17watching everybody you see, and if you're listening, everybody
- 4:22you're gonna hear are really talented.
- 4:25And I'm like the, you know, you ever watched Sesame Street?
- 4:27And they had like that one of these things just doesn't
- 4:30belong. And that's me.
- 4:31So I brought, so I like literally brought my wife on so
- 4:34I can kind of like hide behind, hide behind her with this
- 4:39because improv scares the crap out of me.
- 4:43It's like it scares me when I hear, I've watched improv, I've
- 4:45watched on TV, I've seen it, you know, I've done it.
- 4:48But just the thought of if someone said to me, OK, Bryce,
- 4:51all of a sudden we're going to start doing improv.
- 4:52It scares me. And I don't know, like Rosemary,
- 4:55Dan, you know, whoever wants to take a swing at this.
- 4:57Do you ever heard that before or is that just me?
- 4:59Is this just a Bryce thing? We hear it all the time.
- 5:03We hear it all the time. And what's funny is Bryce,
- 5:06you're amazing at it. We've just watched you do it for
- 5:09three minutes. Sounds great.
- 5:13We're on the spot, though, if you're telling me like, hey, it
- 5:16has to be like this. See if I can play outside color
- 5:18outside the lines so inside's hard.
- 5:20We. Welcome outside the lines.
- 5:22You know what, we improvise every day and I think people
- 5:25with PD improvise more than the general population because you
- 5:29don't know if your meds are going to be on or off.
- 5:32You don't know how your body's responding today.
- 5:34So you have to adapt to like curveballs and the improv skills
- 5:39that we teach help you to do it faster.
- 5:41So I, I think you're already greater than improv.
- 5:43And maybe today our objective is going to be to melt that mental
- 5:47block that is hearing you because you're already a pro.
- 5:53I love it. I, I love that because, you
- 5:54know, I'm all about like mindset.
- 5:56Like mindset to me is so important, especially in
- 5:58Parkinson's because I, you know, you can choose.
- 6:00I, I just, I feel like, you know, there's this big
- 6:03isolation. One of the things I find and
- 6:04what I love about this program and what you guys do, it's, it
- 6:08breaks that isolation. Like there the people with
- 6:11Parkinson's don't, you know, we don't want to go out, we don't
- 6:13want to be, we don't want to do things right.
- 6:15And this is something that A, you can learn a new technique.
- 6:18B, it's, it's fun. It's I've watched listen again.
- 6:22I haven't done it, but I've watched it and, and Morgan, how
- 6:24about you? Have you You've done improv
- 6:26before, Morgan. Yeah, not really good.
- 6:30OK, good. So I brought Morgan and my wife
- 6:31on. Well, so I got so I can, I can
- 6:34hide in the weeds, but I think you know Morgan, so you're
- 6:37you're with Parkinson Canada and and you guys we have we have you
- 6:41guys. I'm just going to pretend like I
- 6:42don't know you. I'm like, hey, hey, so you know,
- 6:46Morgan is one of my outstanding members of one of one of my
- 6:49teams and, and we, you know, we met improv, we met Dan and
- 6:54Rosemary a while ago and and you know, we've had a great
- 6:57relationship. And so from a Parkinson's stand,
- 7:00a parks in Canada standpoint, Morgan, what like what do you
- 7:03see people like, I don't know, like just tell me about tell me
- 7:06about your from a total outsider perspective.
- 7:09Tell me about improv and what what do you see?
- 7:12Well honestly I met Rosemary week 1 of me working at
- 7:15Parkinson Canada I. Really.
- 7:19Yes. Yeah, so I was flown out to PEI
- 7:23to do a community engagement and Rosemary just happened to be
- 7:28there on a family trip. And again, I was just absorbing
- 7:32all the information, didn't know really anyone, the community
- 7:36partners, who the community was in general.
- 7:40And then really from there, even in my role beginning at
- 7:43Parkinson Canada, I wasn't really focused on community
- 7:45partners. I was really focused on support
- 7:48groups and the community member side.
- 7:50So little did I know Rosemary was going to be this like huge
- 7:54part of our daily, like my daily work and everything that they
- 7:58do. So everything that I've heard
- 8:00from Improv for Parkinson's and Improv for Work and Wellness has
- 8:04just been positive from creating communities, empowering people,
- 8:09really just getting rid of that social isolation that is so
- 8:13common. I think really Improv for
- 8:16Parkinson's does all of that and you feel really good and
- 8:19empowered right after you leave. So honestly, it's we need more
- 8:24programs like that. And I think to press on
- 8:27something important in the beginning where everyone puts
- 8:29that emphasis on exercise, that exercise is the only beneficial
- 8:33thing you can do for Parkinson's.
- 8:35But there's such a uncharted territory when it comes to art
- 8:39space programming that is just as beneficial and exciting and
- 8:44empowering to be part of as as much as an exercise program.
- 8:49Is it's so true. And you know, Morgan, I didn't
- 8:51even realize that. You're right.
- 8:52It's funny how you know, how things, you know, paths cross.
- 8:55And I'll, and I'll be honest, I I was in, I was in
- 9:00Newfoundlander. No, where were we?
- 9:02We were in Halifax. Halifax.
- 9:04Yeah. And so my, my, my VP called me
- 9:07and she's like, and she was like, hey, I want you to jump on
- 9:09this call and we're just gonna have this, this quick call with
- 9:12this, you know, this improv group or improv improv troupe.
- 9:16She called you like this troupe, right?
- 9:18And I'm like, what? What do you mean an improv
- 9:20troupe? She was, she was, I don't know
- 9:22lots about it, but apparently they were in Barcelona and they,
- 9:24and I'm like, I was in Barcelona.
- 9:26She was, well, didn't you meet them?
- 9:27I'm like, no, I didn't meet them.
- 9:28And like, well, apparently like they like were like, like storm
- 9:31storming places to get to, to perform and stuff.
- 9:34And anyway, they do this thing and I'm like, Oh my God.
- 9:36And, and in my head I'm going like, what do you, what do you
- 9:39get me into? Like, and so I, we're in Halifax
- 9:41and we were walking down like the, the pier or something.
- 9:44And I'm like, OK, Jack, yeah, I'll take it.
- 9:46Like I'll take it. Like I'm going to come on.
- 9:47But like, I'm, I'm only going to be on for a couple of minutes
- 9:50because you know, I'm not, I don't know what the, I don't
- 9:52know what you're even talking about.
- 9:53And it ended up being on, I don't think we're on for like
- 9:55like 45 minutes or an hour. I was just kept walking around
- 9:58because I was so like, from the minute you guys started talking,
- 10:02it just blew me up. My mind was blown.
- 10:04And my, my, my remember, my wife kept looking at me like, like,
- 10:08what are you talking? Like, because she could hear me,
- 10:10but she couldn't hear, you know, everybody else.
- 10:12But, but what I, what she could tell I was really excited.
- 10:16And so it was such a, So what a weird way to meet.
- 10:19And then now I think that's almost been like 2 years ago.
- 10:21I think Rosemary is right. Yeah, it's been a little bit.
- 10:25Yeah, that's. Nuts, Yeah.
- 10:27That was use. Yeah, OK, so let's OK, let's
- 10:30let's talk about improv again and again.
- 10:33It's been a long day already. Let's anyway, so let's talk
- 10:37about that. Rosemary, what do you see that
- 10:38what's why would what are the benefits for somebody with
- 10:41Parkinson's to take improv to join one of your classes?
- 10:45Amazing. Yeah.
- 10:46Well, it's so interesting mentioning that fear bit or
- 10:51people coming to improv and they're really unsure.
- 10:53But a lot of people have come to improv for Parkinson's because
- 10:57like you mentioned at the beginning, Bryce, so looking for
- 10:59something fun, something where they can connect.
- 11:03And one of the biggest reasons that Improv for Parkinson's
- 11:06started was because Dan's husband, John, who's a movement
- 11:10disorder neurologist, was looking for a new way for people
- 11:15with Parkinson's and care partners to cope.
- 11:18So I have been, I've been managing the programs for a
- 11:21while. And this spring I've been
- 11:23teaching a level 1 and now level 2 cohort.
- 11:26So I've. Oh, there's different levels.
- 11:29There's. Different levels.
- 11:30Oh, there's different levels. Yeah.
- 11:31Oh my. Gosh, so.
- 11:33I'm in level 2 with them right now and I'm really seeing the
- 11:35benefits. And I got this really wonderful
- 11:38e-mail, somebody who just wanted to express what the class was
- 11:43doing for that, for that person. And I think one of the biggest
- 11:48things that really stood out to me was what he said about voice.
- 11:53He said the classes where a space where voice was really
- 11:57honored and there was like the community and support in
- 12:02expressing yourself in all these different ways, having fun with
- 12:06it. But that conversation comes up a
- 12:07lot because folks with Parkinson's are dealing with
- 12:12muted voices or, you know, they start to withdraw from
- 12:17conversations because they feel like they're not getting across.
- 12:20Or if they try and speak, it's being misunderstood.
- 12:25And one of my favorite things recently about improper
- 12:27Parkinson's is that we've had a lot of fun with that.
- 12:31We've had some sort of like mischievous, being misunderstood
- 12:36or being misheard as a way to firstly, make sure that people
- 12:40are being heard. And 2nd, just to give
- 12:42participants a little bit more confidence in if you say
- 12:46something and somebody mishears you, that is just an opportunity
- 12:51for a laugh and another chance to connect.
- 12:55And that's one, one benefit that comes up for me right away.
- 13:00I think you know what there's a couple of things you said there.
- 13:02Number one is one of my favorite shows ever was is was 3's
- 13:05companies because there was always a misunderstanding, like
- 13:08like someone misheard something and it turned into this wild,
- 13:11crazy thing. But so so I love that part and
- 13:15you said so much. Part 2 of that is the voicing
- 13:19and Oh no, sorry, was making fun of it and going after it.
- 13:22Like I actually think that, and you saw some of those little
- 13:25clips in the beginning, like I've I've turned this crappy
- 13:29disease and these crappy little things I deal with and I just
- 13:32kind of make fun of them. Like, and I feel like if I make
- 13:35fun of it, it it takes the power away from it, from it being PD
- 13:41and it gives it, it just like, like, you know, when you make
- 13:44fun of something, you feel more powerful than it.
- 13:46I think maybe. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:48And so and so that's so there's Part 2 there.
- 13:50That was the second thing I really liked what you said was
- 13:53because that resonates with me very much.
- 13:55Because again, I feel like why, why like hideaway, like why get,
- 13:59you know, stop going towards it or away from it And let's just
- 14:02like pound on it. And I feel like if I could sit
- 14:04in an hour and just like make, I can make jokes all the time.
- 14:07Like, I wish I had a baby, you know, because I'd be like giving
- 14:10them the milk and I'd be like, well, here's their milkshake.
- 14:12Oh, no, sorry. I wish I had a baby.
- 14:14A grandchild. How about that?
- 14:15How about a grandchild, honey? A grandchild, OK, That we can
- 14:18just sort of give them that we can just like we can just like
- 14:22give them. I'm good with grandbabies,
- 14:26that's it. Yeah, OK, sorry.
- 14:28Let me back up. Yes, exactly.
- 14:29So the grand, that was a big hard definite.
- 14:33I'll tell you what, if if if we ever had a baby, it'd be a
- 14:35miracle from miracle from miracle.
- 14:37Like there's there's impossibilities from happening
- 14:42here to be talking about anyway, But but so that so I feel like,
- 14:45yeah, you know, I'd say like here's your but I'd be like,
- 14:47hey, here's your milkshake, you know, like, or whatever.
- 14:50Ha ha, ha, like, ha ha, like, you know, like a little thing
- 14:52like that anyway. And Dan, let me ask you this and
- 14:57then and then I want to let's let's let's try if you, I don't
- 15:00know, we didn't really plan this out.
- 15:01So OK. And I know you probably.
- 15:03Had some games. Apart Oh yeah, OK, so why we,
- 15:06why don't we do this? So I'm going to like, I'll, I'll
- 15:09throw it to you, right. And then you could like do we'll
- 15:11play a game and then let's come back and talk a little bit about
- 15:13it and then we'll kind of go back and forth like that just so
- 15:15that everybody can get a taste of what it's like.
- 15:17And and listen, Dan and Rose. So if you have, you know, if
- 15:21you're interested in something like this or or or you're you
- 15:25want to know more about them. Stay with us.
- 15:30We'll be right back. Dan, do you have to where do I
- 16:23have to live to go to one of your classes or how do I get
- 16:26involved in that? Is it in person?
- 16:29You know, you could live in a tent.
- 16:31As long as you have Wi-Fi and an iPad, you can join no problem.
- 16:35You can join from anywhere. So the great thing about our
- 16:39classes is that they're just like this.
- 16:41They're virtual. And we started doing that in
- 16:432020. It was actually the Parkinson's
- 16:45Society of BC who reached out to us and said we think Covid's
- 16:49going to be around for a little while.
- 16:53March 2020. You know, could you do something
- 16:57virtual for people who are isolated in their homes?
- 17:01And you know what I said? Like a terrible improviser, No.
- 17:07No, that's not. That's not a division, no.
- 17:10You got to come in person to do improv, you know, It's something
- 17:13that we do. Together and.
- 17:15They said, will you just try it? Will you just try it out?
- 17:17You know, we really need to reach people who are isolated.
- 17:20We said, OK, so we'll try it. So here we are five years later,
- 17:25running these improv from Parkinson's programs virtually,
- 17:28and we pretty much kick one off every six weeks.
- 17:31You know we're. Reaching people who are far away
- 17:35from us. We're reaching people who can't
- 17:37make it out of their houses. And the great thing is, it's
- 17:40like not that big of a risk. You don't have to encourage to
- 17:44join an improv class. You just got to click a link.
- 17:47And you know what? If you don't like it, just shut
- 17:49your computer. We'll go.
- 17:51Oh. Yeah.
- 17:54Bryce I mean, it's long gone. I'm already in the backyard.
- 17:59I'm in the fetal position into my bedroom.
- 18:01Like that was the worst thing I ever did in my whole like I, I'd
- 18:03be like gone. Like I, I wouldn't stand around
- 18:06here. So OK, so so now and and can so
- 18:09I, we, so we have viewers and we have, I have whatever viewers
- 18:13and, and listeners and watches from all like, you know, just
- 18:15all all over. Can can anybody join?
- 18:19Do you have to be from a certain place?
- 18:20OK, there you go. We've got we've got folks from
- 18:22all over the world. We made a lot of friends in
- 18:24Barcelona when we were there for the World Congress that have
- 18:28kept in touch with us. Soberly.
- 18:29And then we've got a whole bunch of of our American neighbors who
- 18:33join us, and then of course, people from every province.
- 18:38Come in. And, and do improv with us and
- 18:41different levels. You know, we've got people who
- 18:43have had Parkinson's for decades.
- 18:45We have people who are newly diagnosed.
- 18:47And why it works is because you know, we're coming in with that
- 18:51same kind of feeling of a support group that.
- 18:53Everyone has. Something in common with a
- 18:56common challenge. But instead of talking about
- 18:59what our challenges are, we work on creative pursuits together
- 19:04and we exercise the brain. You know when our T-shirts here,
- 19:07we've got the little, the little brain with the migration.
- 19:10Oh my God, that's logo. So we know that we know that
- 19:13physical exercise slows Parkinson's, and what we've
- 19:16really tried to do with this improv for Parkinson's offer is
- 19:21have a social exercise that works the brain.
- 19:24And you'll see in some of these games today, it's not about
- 19:28quick thinking, it's about relaxed thinking and and it's
- 19:32about accepting mistakes. One of our improv mindset
- 19:35pillars is that we welcome mistakes.
- 19:38So we're not trying to get it right, we're not trying to get
- 19:40it fast or we're not trying to be perfect.
- 19:42We're trying to go at what we call the speed of fun.
- 19:47Oh, I like that speed of fun. Fun, right?
- 19:50And that might be different for every partner that you work
- 19:52with. So you'll see in some of these
- 19:54games that we're going to play today.
- 19:56I've got my emotion. You're.
- 20:01Going to be. Put on, you're going to be put
- 20:04on the spot, but your first job is to take a breath and we will
- 20:08wait until you have an idea to share.
- 20:11And that's the support that this group is going to give that all
- 20:15of our classes give because we start off by creating this space
- 20:18to say you're not here to be funny.
- 20:21You're not here to think quick. You're here to be present and to
- 20:24connect with us. And if you've done that, you've
- 20:27really hit the mark. So people don't, so they
- 20:29shouldn't have any decades. Like I have to be funny to go to
- 20:32improv or I have to be enabled. I have to have quick wit to go
- 20:35to improv. It just just kind of come as you
- 20:37are and we just do it that way. Yeah, I was saying to you last
- 20:42time, you know, we used to call this the straight man, but now,
- 20:45now we call it the the neutral grounded character in a good in
- 20:49a good. Very DEI of you.
- 20:55In a good comedy, you need someone who's that neutral,
- 20:57grounded character. Yeah, right.
- 20:59Who then? Is put beside the wild character
- 21:02who's wacky and it makes it funnier, right?
- 21:05So who's the wacky person here today?
- 21:07Who do you? Think.
- 21:10Who said that? Who?
- 21:12Said, Oh my God, she didn't even take a breath like she didn't
- 21:16even I, I didn't got the question.
- 21:19Oh my Lord. Oh my goodness.
- 21:21OK, well, there you go. Listen, the truth comes out.
- 21:24Sorry, Dan, but that's so you're right.
- 21:26So so it appeals to you don't have to be the, the you know, it
- 21:30doesn't matter, right? Just come and try and and, but
- 21:33maybe there are some could is it possible?
- 21:35Is it possible that there's some some funny people that that
- 21:40should actually be straight people or straight people?
- 21:42Straight man's, straight man's, straight man's.
- 21:44Is that what you call it? Straight founded.
- 21:45Character Great. Neutral founded.
- 21:48Let's just say go earth off the air list.
- 21:50Like when they're gone, it's like, but and is there, is it
- 21:53possible that there could be people out there that think
- 21:55they're maybe they don't think they're funny or they don't
- 21:57think they have that quick wit, but actually come in?
- 21:59And have you ever seen someone come in who goes like, you know,
- 22:01I'm not very funny, but I'm here.
- 22:02And then all of a sudden they they find themselves like in in
- 22:05the program. You know, if there's something
- 22:08in this world that makes you laugh, that is a really good
- 22:12indication of your sense of humor.
- 22:14So if you come into the class and you and instead of thinking
- 22:17I got to be funny, I got to make other people laugh, come into
- 22:20the class with the attitude, Let's see if these people can
- 22:23make me laugh, you know, and then it will uncover your sense
- 22:28of humor. And then once I find out, once
- 22:31the teachers find out what makes you laugh, then we've then we've
- 22:34got you because we're like, well, let's do that scene about
- 22:37chicken soup. And this time it's going to be
- 22:39Bryce because he was laughing his head off about that.
- 22:41And then you're Oh my gosh, I did think that was hilarious.
- 22:45OK, so now I'm. Well, I'll tell you, this is
- 22:49this to me, this is like Round 2, because I'm going to tell
- 22:51you, we actually, we did the PDIQ in Vancouver last November.
- 22:56And actually all of us, I think. Rosemary, did you come to
- 23:00dinner? You were at dinner afterwards?
- 23:01Yeah, we were all there. So we were all at this dinner.
- 23:03And I'll be honest. So, so, and that's why I asked
- 23:05my wife to come too, because read this dinner and all, like,
- 23:08and, and, and there's Dan and Rosemary.
- 23:10That's their home turf. You guys are from Vancouver, BC,
- 23:14right? Or, or, or actually go out that
- 23:16way, right. Rosemary, I know you're in
- 23:17Calgary, Alberta, but but and Dan, you're in Vancouver, but
- 23:20we're having dinner in Vancouver and these and, and there's other
- 23:23people there like from the I think you're, you're bored.
- 23:25Different people there. Well, they start breaking out in
- 23:28this improv and they're firing. Everybody's firing things at the
- 23:31and, and, and, and my wife's jumping in there and she's
- 23:33throwing things out and I'm and I'm and I'm waiting.
- 23:36I'm like, no one's going to come up that I've got, I know I'm
- 23:38going to be able to do this. I know.
- 23:39And I didn't get one like I didn't get, I didn't get a like,
- 23:42I, I sat there and, and I'm like, OK, OK.
- 23:45And, but nothing came my way. So I, I always wanted to, to be
- 23:48able to redeem myself, right? And so I think this is it.
- 23:51This is it, right? Morgan, you're with me on that
- 23:53one, right? I am because.
- 23:55OK, this is Morgan and Bryce's Redemption hour.
- 24:00All right, well, let's try. Let's do this.
- 24:01Let's let's show everybody a game.
- 24:02And again, again, don't forget to make sure you check the link
- 24:05in the description below to get all the information about improv
- 24:08when their next classes are. And I'm going to challenge you,
- 24:10you know what, if you want, if you're, if you're kind of going
- 24:12like, I don't know if it's for me, like Dan said, give it a
- 24:14try. Click on join a class, try it.
- 24:17It's not, you know, it's, it's not going to hurt you.
- 24:19What's the worst it's going to do?
- 24:21You might be embarrassed for one second, but guess what?
- 24:23You'll never see them again, right?
- 24:25Unless you come back. And then if you do, you're going
- 24:27to start joining community. And I'll tell you what though,
- 24:29let's let's, let's show, let's do some, let's do some, let's
- 24:32just do it. Let's just see what let's show
- 24:34people what it's like and I don't and by the way, let's
- 24:36let's back up real quick. We didn't pre talk about what
- 24:39these games. We didn't we don't know what's
- 24:41going on right? You know we don't know anything.
- 24:44No one gave us answers. I wish they did.
- 24:46I tried they wouldn't. I tried to bribe them.
- 24:48They wouldn't give me that give me anything.
- 24:50So all right, let's see. Let's take it away, guys.
- 24:54OK. So we're going to, yeah,
- 24:57Rosemary's got one. I want to warm us up first.
- 24:59Rosemary. And then you start with this
- 25:01first game because we always, we always like to warm up.
- 25:04So in our classes we do a bit of an introduction.
- 25:07The classes, by the way, they're in a six part series and then
- 25:10that's it. It's not something you have to
- 25:12join and stick with for a year or anything.
- 25:14It's six part series. You learn the approach of
- 25:17improv. Really, our courses are like
- 25:19communication courses and we use improv to improve communication.
- 25:24So you know, it's six weeks. OK, so we warm up.
- 25:27So I'm going to spin the emotion wheel and I want you to try it
- 25:30first to feel the emotion. And then this is the one of the
- 25:33amazing things about virtual meetings.
- 25:35You'll see your face, so show the emotion.
- 25:39And this is great for PD because often the masking stops you from
- 25:43being able to show what you feel and that disconnects you from
- 25:46who you're with. So this is a chance to get big,
- 25:49to get silly with it and to start from that internal feeling
- 25:52and to make sure that your face is matching.
- 25:55I used to say to people when I was teaching if they had a
- 25:58really grumpy face, you know, how do you like the class?
- 26:00And they'd say, I love it. And I would say tell your face.
- 26:06So here we go. We can call this game tell your
- 26:08face. The motion that we're going to
- 26:11go with is happy, happy. So something that makes.
- 26:15Me feel happy. Oh, so we're all doing it.
- 26:17This isn't a warm. Up, yes.
- 26:21OK. Real though.
- 26:22Bryce, I'm always happy. Happy.
- 26:30And then what is? That right?
- 26:32Yeah. Well, this makes me happy.
- 26:33This make me laugh. Okay, now to neutral.
- 26:37Imagine like to blank canvas back to neutral.
- 26:41And this is a very useful tool because we often if we feel sad,
- 26:44it's like we'll just be happy. That's too much of a switch.
- 26:48But if you know neutral to say what's neutral, how can I just
- 26:51wash the emotion away and be a blank canvas?
- 26:54That's easier to change emotion so we always go back to neutral
- 26:57in the middle. OK, that's.
- 26:58Easy for a person with Parkinson's because it's just
- 27:00that's like normal, right? It's like normal, just normal
- 27:03face. Weepy, weepy.
- 27:07All right. Weepy.
- 27:08Something that makes you weepy. Morgan, that was really good.
- 27:12That made me. I, I, I, I looked down to see
- 27:16what you were doing and and I was like, so good that I started
- 27:18to smile. I was sorry.
- 27:19So I was going to go weepy, but it was like, that was so good.
- 27:22OK, sorry. That's good.
- 27:23Let's see your weepy Let's see your weepy, Bryce.
- 27:25OK. I oh.
- 27:30Good. OK, back to neutral.
- 27:31Back to neutral. OK, This is like the Jim Carrey
- 27:36in the mask, you know, here we go.
- 27:40Back to neutral. And the last one now is going to
- 27:42be guilty. Guilty.
- 27:47That's my normal look. I don't know what guilty looks
- 27:51like. What does guilty look like like?
- 27:53Look, look at us. I don't know.
- 27:54We're trying. OK.
- 27:59Guilty. OK, good.
- 28:00And Doctor Glenn Canvas. OK, so now we have now we're
- 28:05warmed up because these characters that we're going to
- 28:07play today and that we're going to play with might be in an
- 28:10emotional state. So being able to change your
- 28:13emotion and show your emotion, that's going to be key to
- 28:16creating together. OK, we're warmed up and I'll
- 28:19hand it to Rosemary. Great.
- 28:21OK, I want us to do one thing. I want everybody to take a deep
- 28:25breath in and lower your expectation.
- 28:32OK, We love to start off with that one.
- 28:36Or I love to also say there's no expectation to be funny, only to
- 28:42permission to have fun. So giving that to the group,
- 28:46this is called that makes me think of this is one of my all
- 28:50time favourites of improv because I think it's a great
- 28:54place to start and get our brains going.
- 28:57And I won't say much more on it before I explain.
- 29:00So we're going to go around our sort of circle here.
- 29:05It'll go me and then Dan and then Morgan, Carmen, Bryce back
- 29:10to me. Perfect.
- 29:12Every person is going to say one word that the word is making
- 29:17them think of. So it'll kind of go like this.
- 29:18If I start off with a random word, looking around my space, I
- 29:22see lamp. So I'm going to take lamp, and
- 29:25then I would pass that along to the next person.
- 29:27The next person would take lamp and say lamp, the connecting
- 29:31phrase that makes me think of, and a new word, lamp, that makes
- 29:36me think of light. So now light is our word, and
- 29:39the next person would take that light that makes me think of
- 29:43dark and the next person and so on and so forth.
- 29:46So you use that makes me think of as your connector.
- 29:49You'll take the word that comes before you.
- 29:51Just accept it and then add on to it with a new word that it
- 29:55makes you think of. One thing I will add to this
- 29:58game. If you can't think of anything,
- 30:01that's OK. You can say I don't know if you
- 30:05can't even explain why you thought of that thing.
- 30:09Doesn't matter. Whatever it is is wonderful.
- 30:12So let's just start off. Let's give it a try.
- 30:15I'm going to start off with Watch, Watch and we'll go to
- 30:18Dan. Watch makes me think of being
- 30:22late. Nice.
- 30:26Being late makes me think of panic.
- 30:29Yeah, panic. Makes me think of room.
- 30:38Room makes me think of bed. Bed.
- 30:46Bed makes me think of sleeping. Sleeping makes me think of a
- 30:51coma. Oh.
- 30:57No, a coma makes me think of a hospital.
- 31:03A hospital makes me think of Robin Williams.
- 31:11Robin Williams makes me think of Mork.
- 31:16Mork. Yeah, Mork and Mindy.
- 31:22What makes me think of Mindy? Oh, I gave you that one.
- 31:28I gave you that one. Mindy makes me think of
- 31:32peppermints. Oh.
- 31:36Oh, peppermint makes me think. Of.
- 31:40Tea, that is. Tea makes me think of coffee.
- 31:44Coffee makes me think of my wife.
- 31:51Nice. Okay, I'm gonna pause this
- 31:53quickly. Because you didn't have an
- 31:55answer for. That we're gonna go up to we're
- 32:00gonna go up to level 2 where we're gonna take out the phrase
- 32:04that makes me think of. So this time it'll just go word,
- 32:08word, word, word, word. And we'll keep going around like
- 32:12that. So I'll pick up from where you
- 32:14were. You said my wife.
- 32:16I will say, oh, wedding. Oh.
- 32:21Ring. Oh.
- 32:24Telephone. Oh, switch it up.
- 32:29Rotary. Nice.
- 32:34Speeches. Oh, a podium.
- 32:39Microphone. PDIQ.
- 32:45Tired. Tired, tired marathon.
- 32:58Oh, triathlon. Swimming.
- 33:02Yeah, the Olympics. Nice.
- 33:05Tired. Can you reuse words?
- 33:13Everything makes my wife tired. That's very funny.
- 33:16Tired. Tired.
- 33:17OK, Tired snoring. Oh, sleep apnea.
- 33:27Jose. Uh huh, Uh huh.
- 33:34My neighbor. Sorry, Morgan, did you say
- 33:40neighbor? Neighbor Jose with sleep apnea.
- 33:53Too close, I got a. Good one for that.
- 33:55Too close. Too close for Oh no, that's not
- 33:59good. Yeah, that could be it.
- 34:01It could be for comfort. Yeah, that's fantastic.
- 34:04OK, amazing. And we'll end it there.
- 34:07Let's give a round of applause. We borrow from American Sign
- 34:10Language because on Zoom we can have a little light up of our
- 34:14screens. I like that.
- 34:15I like that. Called.
- 34:16That makes me think of. OK, So what does that do?
- 34:20OK, that that was fun that that wasn't too hard, right?
- 34:24You know, so let's Morgan like that's was that OK?
- 34:27Yeah, no, that was great. Like it you're still, you're
- 34:30having to recall, but at the same time there's not that added
- 34:34pressure of like if I did with something, then I'm going to
- 34:38look stupid because they really the answers could be anything.
- 34:41Yeah, and I, I wasn't trying to be funny like it to me when I
- 34:43was coming around all in my head, I kept saying, I just want
- 34:46to come up with a word, like just a word that makes sense,
- 34:48Right. And then and what was
- 34:50interesting, but like you just said something with that recall.
- 34:52And I think that's such an important thing for people with
- 34:54Parkinson's to continue to, to exercise that muscle.
- 34:58That recall muscle reminds me many of sweets therapy and where
- 35:02they made me recall the same sentence every day over and over
- 35:06again. And she said, there's 10 phrases
- 35:10that you say every single day. And I had to keep repeating
- 35:12them. So it was like, good morning,
- 35:13goodnight. And I got up to, I got like,
- 35:16good morning, goodnight, I love you.
- 35:17And then I'm like, oh, I know what I say.
- 35:20I don't know what I want for. I don't know what I want for
- 35:22dinner. Like it was like, cuz I said
- 35:24every single day. But so I think that recall is so
- 35:26important. So that's a really cool thing
- 35:28for people with Parkinson's to like, that's an awesome thing.
- 35:31Interesting. OK, All right.
- 35:33Well, let's try another one. Let's do another one.
- 35:35Oh yeah. I just want to point out what's
- 35:37happening too in that game. You can't plan.
- 35:40So you think about anxiety. You think about worry, right?
- 35:44What is anxiety? It's worrying about the future.
- 35:47So in this game, you could spend three people's answers trying to
- 35:52plan what you're going to say. Oh, I'm going to say duck, and
- 35:55then I'm going to say car tire. But it won't actually resonate
- 35:58with what the person has given you.
- 36:00So you have to choose to enjoy listening to the way that it has
- 36:05morphed, you know, those three people after you and then be
- 36:10present for whatever the person gives you.
- 36:12And so how we how we can apply that to life is that you can
- 36:16spend your whole day worrying about when your medication is
- 36:19going to wear off. Or you can start to develop the
- 36:22confidence to say, I can enjoy this on period right now.
- 36:25And I know that when it when I go off, I got this.
- 36:29I'll deal with that when I cross that bridge.
- 36:31You know, we spent so much of our life anticipating and in
- 36:34anxiety for the future. And this game is one of those
- 36:38examples of, you know, the moment is here for you to enjoy
- 36:42and you can choose to enjoy and trust that when I get that word
- 36:46from Rosemary, something else is going to come into my mind.
- 36:50And that actually causes the the humor, right?
- 36:54So it's this is a game that we we introduced early on to invite
- 36:59people to be present, invite people to enjoy the moment and
- 37:02trust that you don't have to play and you don't have to
- 37:05anticipate as much about the future.
- 37:08Love you. Entrust yourself to respond.
- 37:10Yeah, I love it. Yeah.
- 37:12I always say wherever you are, be there, right?
- 37:15And so this keeps you right in that zone.
- 37:17I love that. I love it.
- 37:18Yeah. OK.
- 37:19I'm ready for another one because I feel like I did good
- 37:22on that one. And and I don't want my
- 37:25confidence to wane here. OK, here's one that we invented
- 37:30in the pandemic because we were all on Zoom.
- 37:33This one is called Zoom Magic. So we're going to give gifts to
- 37:37each other that are going to transform through the magic of
- 37:40the Internet. So I might start out here with
- 37:43this little lip balm, right? And so I'm going to say,
- 37:46Rosemary, I've got you this lip balm.
- 37:48And as I bring it to my camera, she will put her gift that's
- 37:53from her space up to her camera and it will morph, right?
- 37:57And then and then she'll say, oh, thank you for this.
- 38:01OK, OK, so let's start with this lip balm and I'll say, Rosemary,
- 38:04I got you something. But it will change.
- 38:06Oh, I got you something. Gosh damn.
- 38:11Wow, thank you. A spool of thread.
- 38:16Well, I got you that. I got you that, Rosemary,
- 38:19because you hold everything together just.
- 38:24Like friends? I thought that would be good for
- 38:26you. Thank you.
- 38:28Thank you so much. OK, so I get so you will.
- 38:34The person receiving takes their gift and then it's the
- 38:36justification piece. I just want to shout that out.
- 38:40So Dan then has to explain exactly.
- 38:43Why are you giving that gift to you?
- 38:45Yeah. So Morgan here.
- 38:48I actually I have something else I have something else for.
- 38:52You here. There you go.
- 38:55Oh wow, look. At all that.
- 38:58Fun stuff this I have questions. Yes.
- 39:03You know, Morgan, we were having that conversation about local
- 39:10unsolved mysteries and how you wanted to have a board with all
- 39:16the clues and the red string. And I thought thumbtacks are
- 39:20really the first step for that. So helpful.
- 39:24You know, I've moved to this new place and really needed some new
- 39:27pushpins. Perfect, perfect, perfect.
- 39:30Awesome. Actually, Bryce here.
- 39:35I have a gift for. You so.
- 39:39Oh, so so she's OK. So Oh well, thank you for that
- 39:45toilet paper. Why do the toilet paper right
- 39:52there? I know Morgan just gave it to
- 39:55me. I'm not sure why she gave me
- 39:56political people. Oh my God.
- 40:01You know, I I just thought it might be helpful to wipe up all
- 40:05the shit that comes out of your mouth sometimes.
- 40:16Oh my God, that was so good. That was beautiful.
- 40:22I thought that was bad. OK, so now do I get?
- 40:26So now I I'm giving the. Carmen, Yeah.
- 40:28I got to give her the what I got.
- 40:30Yep, and then it will morph. It'll morph.
- 40:32Oh, OK. All right, so Carmen, I'm going
- 40:34to give you this toilet paper or I'm going to give this to you.
- 40:37And it turns into oh. Thank you a scrunchie.
- 40:42Oh, a scrunchie. I gave that to you because I
- 40:46love when your hair is tied up. No, let me back up.
- 40:52I I gave, I gave you that. I gave you that scrunchie
- 40:56because you have such beautiful hair and and and and sometimes I
- 41:01like, I like it in a ponytail, OK.
- 41:06Thank you. Perfect.
- 41:06Yeah, Yeah. Thank you, honey.
- 41:09That was a hard one. My brain was going somewhere
- 41:11else, and then I pulled. It back.
- 41:13Got to keep it PG baby. Well, Morgan got me fired up
- 41:18with swear words, so I was excited.
- 41:22OK. Oh, so Dan, I got you.
- 41:27OK. Oh.
- 41:31Oh. So, Dan, yeah, I got your
- 41:35battery because I remember you saying that sometimes you run
- 41:38out of batteries for all your toys and knickknacks, etcetera.
- 41:42So I thought, you know you could reuse or use a battery, right?
- 41:46In there, Great. That's perfect.
- 41:49Very nice. Great.
- 41:51Very nice. You.
- 41:54Just pulled that out of the air. I love it.
- 41:57OK, I love. It yeah.
- 41:59I won't be able to type for a while now until I put.
- 42:03The battery back. Put it back in my keyboard.
- 42:06OK, so this, this is a fun game because first of all, we get to
- 42:09be creative with what we have. So how often in how often with
- 42:13PD do you got to work what with what you have, right?
- 42:16So it's like whatever was in reach, you have to use.
- 42:19So #1 resourcefulness and then #2 you had to justify what
- 42:24happened. I didn't know what Rosemary was
- 42:27going to pull out of her space there, but I had to make believe
- 42:30like I had given it to her and give a justification for that.
- 42:34And everyone did so well justifying why they had given
- 42:37this this mystery gift. Yes, that is so cool.
- 42:41And I think, yeah. And you know what?
- 42:44It's something, you know, it's simple when you explain it, it's
- 42:48simple. And to be honest with you, I was
- 42:52looking around because I was like, Oh my gosh.
- 42:53So OK, we have to find something.
- 42:54We have to find something. And I'm like, well, what's
- 42:57funny? Like I kept, I kept thinking
- 42:59what's funny about it? But like, I think that it
- 43:02doesn't matter. It didn't really matter what we
- 43:03gave, did it? No, no, because sometimes the
- 43:07justification will just keep the game going and it will be really
- 43:10sweet. Like, you know, you said to
- 43:12Carmen, I like when your hair is tied back.
- 43:14That's why I give you that scrunchie.
- 43:15And it was like, oh, that was a great 1, you know?
- 43:17And then sometimes Morgan's like, you know, that toilet
- 43:20paper is to wipe out all the shit that comes.
- 43:21Over you it's like she just went for it.
- 43:26Did you see her like she got like, Oh my God, I get, I'm just
- 43:29gonna hammer this one down and it's and, but, and I think
- 43:32that's really cool. And I think that the, the
- 43:34boundaries of what we're in it, it, it, it lends to just let
- 43:39things go right? Like it just like, you know, and
- 43:41I think so the thing I really like about this is that you
- 43:46can't prepare like you said. I mean, I mean, here's the one
- 43:49thing I hate about it is you can't prepare right?
- 43:52But now that we're into it, and I'm really glad that you
- 43:55couldn't compare and we're all on the same level because we
- 43:57both, we all had to do this, come up with something and we
- 44:00didn't know what was going to be around the corner.
- 44:02And even when you prepare, things rarely go as planned.
- 44:07Right. You have to amend your
- 44:08preparation. Your preparation serves you to
- 44:10be agile. And so this comes to our second
- 44:13mindset. We said the first one was
- 44:15embrace mistakes. We welcome mistakes.
- 44:17This one is seek positivity, right?
- 44:20You don't know what that person is going to pull out of their
- 44:23space, but then you say why you gave it to them.
- 44:26And So what you're doing is seeking positivity.
- 44:28Life is full of these unexpected things.
- 44:31Things don't go. Normally, normally unless you
- 44:33unless you talk shit all the time, then that was that was a
- 44:35little bit not positive, but you're right and you're right.
- 44:40And you had to pivot onto that side.
- 44:41And I think like I was actually really excited.
- 44:44Like it was really neat because I felt like I got to hear
- 44:47somebody was going to say something about me.
- 44:49Like to me like, like it was, I don't know, it was just, it was
- 44:51really, it was weird. It was weirdly cool.
- 44:54But I wouldn't ever think if you someone explained that to me
- 44:57over the phone and said, OK, here's what I'd be like, Oh, OK,
- 44:59you know, whatever. But when you're doing it and
- 45:01seeing it and I think seen what and, and maybe in the comments
- 45:05it or you know, if you're, if you're, if you have, you've
- 45:08never seen improv or heard of improv before or, or maybe
- 45:11you've heard of it, but you haven't seen it at this level.
- 45:13You know, what did you, what would you know?
- 45:17How did that make you? It was, it was simple.
- 45:19I can't even explain it, but it was cool.
- 45:21And I feel, and I'm already feeling better.
- 45:24I was really, really tired today.
- 45:25Like we had a very long week. I was traveling all week and
- 45:27I've been so tired. And I was like, yeah, it was,
- 45:30I'm exhausted. Like my body's exhausted.
- 45:33My brain's exhausted. I've talked so much and yet I'm
- 45:37feeling like, like, like I want, I want more.
- 45:39Like I'm like, I'm excited. Like I'm like, what's next?
- 45:41Like is there like, it's like so cool.
- 45:43It's really neat. I love that.
- 45:45I think that's one of the biggest benefits of the class,
- 45:48as well as just just that boost of Wellness that like mood
- 45:53change. I taught a workshop last week
- 45:57for a smaller group who have been through our Improv
- 46:00Parkinson's program, and one of the people joined the program
- 46:04and was like, I'm really frustrated with life right now.
- 46:07There are some things happening that I'm feeling super
- 46:10frustrated about, but I know because I know how improv class
- 46:15makes me feel. I knew that all I had to do was
- 46:17show up and by the end of the class, she had a smile on her
- 46:21face. We were all laughing, you know,
- 46:25or people who are really people who are really having a hard
- 46:29time with. What I often see is people
- 46:32having a really frustrating time dealing with all of the
- 46:37different appointments and everything that comes with
- 46:39having Parkinson's and the frustration that comes out of
- 46:43that and the exhaustion that comes out of that.
- 46:45But what people will say to me is I, you know, I kept this in
- 46:49my schedule as much as I can. You know, sometimes you have to
- 46:52go to the appointment, sometimes you can schedule around it.
- 46:56But people show up because they're like, I know, I know
- 46:58what this does for me. I know how it's going to make me
- 47:00feel. And it's so consistent too.
- 47:03Even sometimes as a teacher, I'm, I wake up in the morning,
- 47:06I'm like, Oh no, they're gonna teach class.
- 47:09And as soon as I see them, even through Zoom, I feel so
- 47:13connected. We have such a laugh together
- 47:16and the rest of my day is so much better than had I not had a
- 47:20class at the start. I think if I saw that in my
- 47:23calendar and it's one of those things I'd be like, that'd be
- 47:25the one I'd be looking forward to like through the week.
- 47:27I could look at all the other appointments I have and go like,
- 47:29oh, at least that one, you know, and I'm, and I'm thinking too,
- 47:32you guys are building a community.
- 47:33You know, Morgan, I mean, I'll ask you this symbol too.
- 47:36Like let's talk about community in Parkinson's, right?
- 47:39And, and, and, you know, at Parkinson Canada, that's
- 47:42something that what's your role again?
- 47:44What's what's what's? Community.
- 47:46Partnerships, community partnerships, community
- 47:49partnerships. So you're so partnerships is is
- 47:51huge, right, But the community is, is massive.
- 47:54And I think, I don't know, speak to the community side and what
- 47:57you see, you know, improv doing in that realm.
- 48:01I mean, Rosemary and Dan, they know backs.
- 48:04It's breaking. I know, that's why I'm asking
- 48:07you though. Step out of your comfort zone
- 48:11and join something that maybe you once loved and you kind of
- 48:15stepped away from it because of a diagnosis or even just loss of
- 48:18community. It's, it's huge to join
- 48:21something that's bigger than just yourself and contribute to
- 48:24a group mission. That's, that's community, right?
- 48:29Having participating in things that you all have something in
- 48:32common. I mean, that's community in
- 48:33itself. And I think it's so easy to see
- 48:37the benefits of being part of a community.
- 48:39But then you also see as soon as you withdraw, you see those
- 48:43implications that not having a community really has.
- 48:47So it's huge and community could be anything.
- 48:49It could be your neighborhood, it could be your improv group
- 48:51that you're a part of. It could be an online community.
- 48:54I think the community looks different for everyone, but just
- 48:58finding where you kind of fit in, I think is is huge and it's
- 49:01scary. It is really scary to.
- 49:03Keep. Me exposed to situations like
- 49:05this, even just watching a YouTube video or a stream about
- 49:10something you're interested in that's it's it's something just
- 49:13to get out of your bubble a little bit.
- 49:15And I think even too with Parkinson's, it's a very unique,
- 49:19a unique disease, right? You're, it's different for
- 49:21everyone. It's different at every stage of
- 49:24the journey. And I think stepping out and
- 49:27kind of coming out to the community and saying you have
- 49:30Parkinson's, that's daunting in itself.
- 49:33So I think finding these community groups and programs
- 49:37is, is huge in kind of mitigating that socialized,
- 49:40isolated, the ice. Wow, struggling with the.
- 49:44You're catching my disease. That's why that's.
- 49:48And really find something that is bigger than yourself because
- 49:50it matters. It really does.
- 49:51Having people that you can connect with and even from a
- 49:54care partner point of view, having having a group of other
- 49:57care partners that relate to your circumstances and the
- 50:00things that you're going through, it's huge.
- 50:02It matters just as much as the person living with Parkinson's.
- 50:05That's so true. You know, Carmen, I don't know,
- 50:06like I'm sure she would tell you if she, you know, if well, she's
- 50:11right here actually, but she's on mute.
- 50:12But you know, like she would say, yeah, that'd be great.
- 50:15But Bryce is different than everybody else.
- 50:17Probably I'm probably that person.
- 50:18But but there is there is something to be said, for
- 50:20example, like in this PDIQ, for example, it's something wild
- 50:24happens when you have people that are like you OK, maybe
- 50:29again, we're all different. Everybody has different swamps
- 50:31out. And Carmen, I'm going to ask you
- 50:32about this as well because you know, like for example, PDIQ, we
- 50:36were we were booked out this weekend.
- 50:37We're in Montreal, QC, full house.
- 50:39You couldn't move and it was just full of people just like
- 50:43me, right? People with PD and care
- 50:45partners. And it's, do you, do you think
- 50:48that's important, Carmen? Yeah, I think as unique as all
- 50:53of you are, the the similarities are all there as well.
- 50:57So your experiences are very similar in different ways, if
- 51:01that makes sense. So when you talk, when you do
- 51:03your little shorts and you talk about struggling to put your
- 51:06shoes on or struggling to put your socks on, all of you with
- 51:10PDI think at some point in time, if you will have that same
- 51:14issue, if you don't have it already.
- 51:16And but just how or the why for you might be different.
- 51:19Is it stiffness or is it tremors or you know, there's very,
- 51:23there's all these variations of that same problem that all of
- 51:27you would have, but it's the same problem.
- 51:29So it unites you in it being in a, in a format like that unites
- 51:35all of you and you feel safe in the space to be who you want to
- 51:38be. And that was one thing that, I
- 51:40mean, I, I'll, you know, you might talk about it, but you,
- 51:42you've mentioned it a couple of times when we were in Barcelona.
- 51:45I think that was an enlightening for you because you went to the
- 51:48world of Congress and it was probably one of the first times
- 51:51that you'd ever been in a space where a lot of the people there,
- 51:56a percentage I don't know, had PD.
- 51:59And it was, I think it was a moment for you where you
- 52:04realize, OK, this is a safe space for all people with PD.
- 52:07And I think that's what PDIQ also provides.
- 52:10It's like a safe space for all of you and care partners and
- 52:14everyone that works there or is working there, the volunteers,
- 52:16they all understand it. So I think that's the uniqueness
- 52:20of that. And I think it's important.
- 52:21I think that you there's there's strength in numbers, solidarity
- 52:24in your fight of the disease, right that we from a care
- 52:28partner or working from Parkinson's or being on improv,
- 52:31we don't we can't experience that.
- 52:33It's only for you. Well, there's a stigma to it
- 52:35too, right? Like you're always and and and
- 52:37we, we try to hide. We try to, you know, if you look
- 52:40everybody, you know, you hold your hands, you're trying to
- 52:42because you're wherever you are, you're thinking, OK, what it,
- 52:44you know, they're going to look at me, they're going to stare at
- 52:47me, whatever it might be. But when I you're right to to
- 52:50your point in Barcelona, I was blown away.
- 52:52I was in this auditorium and there was like people ripping
- 52:54around with these, you know, they were walking crazy and
- 52:57everybody was no one was hiding their symptoms.
- 52:59And it was like this free space where, you know, you could just
- 53:04be you and it didn't matter, You know, it just didn't matter.
- 53:07And I think, and I think that's what you guys are creating in,
- 53:10in your groups and I, you know, in with the, with the improv, I,
- 53:13I see that community like you're building these really you're,
- 53:16you're building people, but you're building a community.
- 53:18And I feel like, you know, if, if people would take a chance,
- 53:22right, people like who maybe you're like, maybe like me and
- 53:24go like, I don't know, when they take this chance, you know, you
- 53:27find more than just like you're not, you're not going there to
- 53:30become a comedian, right? You're going there to, to, you
- 53:33know, just to maybe maybe take a light off for an hour and, and
- 53:36maybe take it easy. But then, but but I think you're
- 53:37they're do you find? Are they becoming friends in
- 53:40these groups? Like, are they?
- 53:41There's a community, you see that's awesome.
- 53:44I love that, absolutely. We just got invited to a BBQ.
- 53:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we got it.
- 53:53We're going to a BBQ with three of our original crew members.
- 53:57And people tell us stories all the time about getting together.
- 54:00People have gotten together in New York who have taken the the
- 54:03course together. And so we're we're about to go
- 54:06to a barbecue. And, you know, three of the
- 54:09three of the performers are actually John's patients, my
- 54:11husband's patients. And so I said, yeah, are you
- 54:14going to come to this BBQ? He goes, I don't know.
- 54:16It's kind of awkward. They're my patients.
- 54:18And I said, yeah, but you know, they're the, they're the troop
- 54:21members. You know they are, They become.
- 54:23Friends and so. He goes, OK, I'll go.
- 54:27It's like running into, did you ever have the unique?
- 54:29You run into your teacher when you're like in school and you
- 54:32run into your teacher and it feels awkward.
- 54:34I bet you it's the same kind of feeling to run into your teacher
- 54:38at Walmart. I I don't know.
- 54:40I would say beside, I would say beside your husband at when we
- 54:43were out for dinner and all of us and we're and we were talking
- 54:45about something. And also I heard this like blah,
- 54:47blah, blah, blah, race car, NASCAR blah.
- 54:48And someone yelling at the waitress and and and I go,
- 54:51what's any? And he reads, he says, Oh my
- 54:54God, here they go. You can't take you just can't,
- 54:56you can't, you can't go any you get these guys to people
- 54:59together and you just can't go anywhere.
- 55:00Just want to have supper, whatever.
- 55:02They're going to be bitter. And then it was so funny, but he
- 55:05was saying it like it was fun. But he goes, oh boy.
- 55:07And I said, oh, they just, he said this is going to go on all
- 55:11night now. Yeah, he.
- 55:13Was right. He was right.
- 55:15So funny. Yeah.
- 55:18And that's also how I Sorry, Morgan, that's how I was in PEI
- 55:23and came to the PDIQ is because one of our troupe members from
- 55:27so we have level 1, we have level 2.
- 55:29And then there's the PD performance troupe who basically
- 55:32got bit by the improv bug and didn't want to stop.
- 55:34So they practice with a coach and do performances, but one of
- 55:39them was in PEI. So we met up and we were
- 55:42chatting with Parkinson Canada. So I actually went with her and
- 55:45then that's how we, that's how I was there as well and then ran
- 55:48into Morgan. Yeah, power of community,
- 55:52though, I think that like Carmen, even Bryce and Rosemary,
- 55:55you just touched on something so important too, where that's
- 55:58that's community in itself. It's building these safe spaces
- 56:01for people to show up authentically, no matter what
- 56:04time of day it is, what their symptoms might look like in that
- 56:08moment, and really just rally around them and create this
- 56:11tight bond of like trust, empowerment, and just again,
- 56:15that's community. And I think that's a huge part
- 56:17of what my job is, finding these awesome programs like improper
- 56:20Parkinson's and building on to those, really those programs and
- 56:26making sure that people know that these things are accessible
- 56:28and they're out there. And there's people that are
- 56:31going through something exactly like you.
- 56:34So like, take a chance, step out of your comfort zone and you
- 56:37might find something that's you're going to a BBQ.
- 56:42And and when you go to the BBQ, what are you taking on the bar?
- 56:44No, I'm just kidding. What do you take with you?
- 56:49You've already learning that it's like, but OK, so that's so
- 56:51powerful because again, yeah. And you know, you're listening,
- 56:56watching, whether you're newly diagnosed or whether you're, you
- 56:59know, midway through this journey or 15 years into like me
- 57:02or longer. There's always because we never
- 57:06know, right? We never know day-to-day or
- 57:08what's coming around the corner and what's going to affect us or
- 57:10what's going to happen next. I think from, from the minute
- 57:13you're diagnosed, you're in this really weird zone of looking for
- 57:17answers and trying to, you know, what's going to make me feel
- 57:20better and what's going to prolong this and having to come
- 57:22up with these like crazy this like things that you crazily
- 57:26have to think about, like, you know, thinking about getting
- 57:29your brain, you know, your head. I called the Frankenstein thing
- 57:32and I kick and I'm, it's on my brain right now because I, I
- 57:35came up again on the waiting list and it was like we were
- 57:37sitting in the doctor last week with the doctor and he's like,
- 57:39uh huh, OK. And I'm like, no, no, no, not
- 57:42ready yet, not ready yet, not ready yet.
- 57:44And, and, and I'm like, this is the third time now.
- 57:46Like this is about a three-year waiting list.
- 57:48So I've gone on it three Times Now.
- 57:50And I know my, my, my luck's running out.
- 57:53I know one of these times I'm going to have to be like, Oh my
- 57:54God. And, and I had a conversation in
- 57:58Toronto with, it's funny because I had a conversation, he was
- 58:04really, he was like, he had DBS and he's just loving it.
- 58:06And he's like telling me how great it was.
- 58:08And, and I, and I said, I don't know if I'm just a big chicken
- 58:11or I'm just waiting for the, you know, like the technology to get
- 58:15better. I just, I'm not there yet.
- 58:17And he, and, and, and I told him I was a big chicken, right?
- 58:20And, and, and he and he and he said, yeah, well, it's not that
- 58:23bad, you know, and he shows, you know, 89 staples and, you know,
- 58:26could feel the scalp being pulled back.
- 58:28And I'm just literally passing out at the table like this.
- 58:30Like, you know, and that's it. That's probably not working for
- 58:32me. But but anyway, we have all
- 58:34these huge decisions, these massive in our minds, these life
- 58:38changing decisions. And then again, like you said,
- 58:39where we don't do this, do this, do this, do exercise in your.
- 58:42I live my life what I call in a three hour cycle.
- 58:44I'm every three hours taking my meds, like down to the point you
- 58:47said earlier. And yeah, any escape from
- 58:49reality that that we could literally do that We that's just
- 58:53kind of fun. But yeah, has benefits like,
- 58:58like the like the benefit side to me blows my mind because to
- 59:01be honest with you guys, I'll be honest, if there was no benefit
- 59:03to park, I would still be the biggest advocate because I I
- 59:07still think you need to be able to have a moment to just get out
- 59:11of the seriousness of it and just be yourself.
- 59:12But but the benefits side, the memory recall, the I think the
- 59:16kind of the community and getting out of isolation and
- 59:18just, and having like even speech therapy, like again,
- 59:21repeating things and speaking out loud and, and just, Oh my
- 59:25God, it's amazing. I'm like, I'm such a, I'm such a
- 59:28fan. I I think about myself walking
- 59:30the thing going, Oh my gosh, who are these people I have to talk
- 59:32to into what? And I'm thinking in my head like
- 59:35I saw, you know what I saw in my head, You know, those some
- 59:37gestures like improv, like, you know, I'm like, I'm going to be
- 59:40talking to these like people, these gestures I want to talk
- 59:42about like come out with some improv thing.
- 59:44And So what it's like, I'm just such a fan of what you guys do
- 59:48and it's amazing. It's amazing.
- 59:50Do we have another game or no or is that it like or?
- 59:53Oh yeah, I want to, I want to spend our last game making fun
- 59:56of Parkinson's because I think part of taking, part of taking
- 1:00:00the power back is like laughing at our situation and, and taking
- 1:00:04the power back, right. So we'll start.
- 1:00:07Out with. Just a game that gets us going
- 1:00:10on what we know about a topic or an occupation.
- 1:00:15So I'm going to say an occupation and anyone can say
- 1:00:18yes and and just say something we know about that something we
- 1:00:22know about that occupation. So this is someone and I've got
- 1:00:25this app called the suggestion app.
- 1:00:30OK, so it's occupation is human resources.
- 1:00:33So what do we know about human resources?
- 1:00:35So I'll say yes, and they deal with complaints.
- 1:00:43Yes, and they're often short. Short name to HR.
- 1:00:50Yes, and they are usually the Union's nemesis.
- 1:00:56Yes, and they take care of the hiring process.
- 1:01:02Yes and yes, and they also take care of sexual harassment
- 1:01:08complaints. OK, perfect.
- 1:01:11So these are all things that we know about HR.
- 1:01:14I'm going to give us another profession now, and I want us to
- 1:01:17do that same exercise in our brains around what do we know
- 1:01:20about it? But this time, we're going to
- 1:01:22layer on what that might have in common with Parkinson's disease,
- 1:01:28right? So taking prices, it might be
- 1:01:30like Parkinson's disease is like HR.
- 1:01:33There's a lot of sexual complaints.
- 1:01:36Oh, I love it. OK.
- 1:01:40I wish I could have. You know, when you said that,
- 1:01:43I'm like, you're so good at this.
- 1:01:44Like, it was so brilliant. All right.
- 1:01:46And. You did that one right, You.
- 1:01:48So your brain is doing two things. 1 is coming up with what
- 1:01:51you know about that profession. Yeah.
- 1:01:53And then we're going to match it with anything we know about
- 1:01:55Parkinson's disease. I don't love that.
- 1:01:57So maybe tremor, maybe pills, maybe Constipation, maybe
- 1:02:01frustration, you know, whatever. And then that's going to be how
- 1:02:05we make fun of of PD I. Love it.
- 1:02:07And if you're watching or listening, play along in the
- 1:02:09comments, just play along. Like throw one in there because
- 1:02:12oh, I want to read them. These are somebody OK, All
- 1:02:14right. OK, here's the occupation and
- 1:02:17the joke formula is Parkinson's is like, so Parkinson's is like
- 1:02:22a travel guide. Parkinson's is like a travel
- 1:02:27guide. I'll start off.
- 1:02:29Parkinson's is like a travel guide because you're going to go
- 1:02:32to places that you didn't expect.
- 1:02:35Good one. Oh, we keep going.
- 1:02:38So we all, we keep the good. Ones now we can riff on travel
- 1:02:40guide. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:43Tour guide. Parkinson's is like a travel
- 1:02:47guide. Suddenly you're on a journey
- 1:02:50with a whole bunch of new people.
- 1:02:54Holy mackerel, you guys. Those are so good.
- 1:02:59OK, it's. OK, Parkinson's is like a travel
- 1:03:03guide because, you know, every trip never is in a straight
- 1:03:10line. Yeah.
- 1:03:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Parkinson's is like a travel
- 1:03:21guide. Yeah, it's like AI thought I had
- 1:03:28one really good and I just wouldn't formulate in my head
- 1:03:30that's. OK.
- 1:03:32OK, let me try a different 10 Morgan.
- 1:03:34Do you have 1 Morgan? Parkinson's is like a travel
- 1:03:36guide because sometimes the coordination doesn't go to plan.
- 1:03:44Very good. All right, I think I know this
- 1:03:46one OK. Parkinson's is like a travel
- 1:03:48guide because no, see, I can't, I can't, I can't pull this one
- 1:03:53together. It was I was, you know what I
- 1:03:54wanted to say? When I think a travel guide, I'm
- 1:03:56thinking of like the person in the bus, like giving me a tour.
- 1:03:59I'm thinking of a tour guide. I think that's the problem.
- 1:04:01It's like a tour guide. Is it like a tour guide?
- 1:04:03So it's like a tour guide because.
- 1:04:05Because yeah, so I don't know. See, I can't come up with one.
- 1:04:11What's the idea that you're working with?
- 1:04:13We'll help you out. Well, I'm thinking like, OK, so
- 1:04:15the tour guide is is giving you, telling you all the highlights,
- 1:04:18right? And telling you what's to what's
- 1:04:19coming. But so, but that's not like
- 1:04:21Parkinson, because you don't know what the hell is going to
- 1:04:22happen. So that doesn't make sense.
- 1:04:24There you go. Parkinson's is.
- 1:04:25Yeah, Parkinson's is the reverse of a travel guide.
- 1:04:28You. Can I know so I can do opposite?
- 1:04:30And this is where the beauty is, where you can break the rules,
- 1:04:33you know, because we have so many rules to follow.
- 1:04:36And my God, people with PD have so many instructions to follow.
- 1:04:39And part of the joy of improv is that we love to break the rules.
- 1:04:42We love to break the games. So if you go, Parkinson's is not
- 1:04:46like a tour guide because you never know what the hell is
- 1:04:49happening. Yeah, that's what I that's what
- 1:04:50I wanted to say. So I'm allowed to do that.
- 1:04:53I'm allowed to do that. OK, let's do another one.
- 1:04:54I'm ready. I'm ready.
- 1:04:55I'm. Just one more here we go, here
- 1:04:57we go. So Parkinson's is like mechanic.
- 1:05:06Parkinson's is like a mechanic because you never know where the
- 1:05:09tool's gonna go. Parkinson's is like a mechanic
- 1:05:20because you're gonna spend the rest of your life in a Body
- 1:05:22Shop. Oh my God.
- 1:05:37Parkinson's is like a mechanic because sometimes you have to
- 1:05:42call the mechanic to put the wheel back on the car.
- 1:05:48It's a thinker. It's a thinker.
- 1:05:56Parkinson's is like a mechanic because as a mechanic has to oil
- 1:06:00up and Lube his wheels and tools, so does a person with
- 1:06:04Parkinson's. Yes, OK, nice, nice.
- 1:06:09I could have said it funnier, but.
- 1:06:12As perfect as is perfect as is. Parkinson's is like a mechanic
- 1:06:17because you're going to be investigating a lot of strange
- 1:06:20noises. Oh.
- 1:06:24Oh, that's true. That's a good one.
- 1:06:27That's a good one. It's like a mechanic cause the
- 1:06:30final bill is never what the estimate said.
- 1:06:36Nice, nice. What the heck?
- 1:06:38That's all. That's really good.
- 1:06:39I was gonna say they. I was gonna say Parkins like a
- 1:06:41mechanic because they RIP you off.
- 1:06:43Hey. Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:06:48I like that. Amazing.
- 1:06:53Parkinson's is like a mechanic. You're totally filthy, but you
- 1:06:57have no idea what caused. It God.
- 1:07:09Oh my God. OK, one more, let's get another.
- 1:07:13Yeah, let's try another one. That's good.
- 1:07:15One more occupation here, OK? I remember play along, put it in
- 1:07:19the comments. There's so many.
- 1:07:21There's so many out there. A locksmith.
- 1:07:25Locksmith. Parkinson's.
- 1:07:27Is like a locksmith. Parkinson's is like a locksmith
- 1:07:33who's kind of gone off the rails.
- 1:07:35The call to the door seems to keep changing.
- 1:07:39Every day there's a new password to.
- 1:07:41Get. In that was good.
- 1:07:45Parkinson's is like a locksmith because it's always no see.
- 1:07:49Parkinson's is not Parkinson's is not like a locksmith because
- 1:07:54because it they're because they're they're always stuck.
- 1:07:57No, I what's this? The lock's stuck, right?
- 1:08:01So how, Hey, help me. OK, let's help me with one
- 1:08:03second. How would I put that together?
- 1:08:05I want to say to, here's what I'm thinking to myself.
- 1:08:07The locksmith unlocks like stuck doors, right?
- 1:08:11And a piece of person with Parkinson's is stuck all the
- 1:08:13time. So.
- 1:08:14So how would I? How would I?
- 1:08:17Someone help me throw that together into a line just for my
- 1:08:20brain? So how could you?
- 1:08:23How could you word that right? Yeah.
- 1:08:24What would I say it's? Like a locksmith, you're always
- 1:08:28getting called to get things moving or you can't turn the
- 1:08:31key. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:33So this is where it's like that, yes.
- 1:08:34And thing around what do what do locksmiths do?
- 1:08:37Well, they open locked doors. They, they can fit a key, they
- 1:08:41can pick a lock. They, they come at night.
- 1:08:45Maybe there's a joke about that 24 hours, you know, maybe
- 1:08:49there's a joke about how expensive they are.
- 1:08:52Maybe there's a joke about. Is locksmith a hard one?
- 1:08:57Well, they, you know, we, this is the beauty of this game.
- 1:09:00We can take any suggestion. It doesn't even have to be a
- 1:09:02profession, you know, we could take a store or an object.
- 1:09:06And this is where the game is exercising that muscle in our
- 1:09:10minds to find an alternate path or an alternate word.
- 1:09:15And one of our one of our teachers.
- 1:09:18So in every class, we've got someone from the Parkinson's
- 1:09:20troop helping to teach the class.
- 1:09:23And one of the teachers name is Peter and he calls this
- 1:09:26neuroplasticity. He says what's what's his
- 1:09:29challenges in Parkinson's is word search because he was a
- 1:09:33lawyer and he's got this amazing vocabulary.
- 1:09:35He says why use a 5 cent word when you can have a $0.25 word.
- 1:09:40One of his frustrations is he doesn't remember all these
- 1:09:42amazing words that he knows. And what improv has helped him
- 1:09:45to do is say I can't think of that word.
- 1:09:49What's an alternate? How could I say this in a
- 1:09:51different way? But this game is actually
- 1:09:53helping us do. That I struggle with that,
- 1:09:55that's a big one for me. And you know, I often times, and
- 1:09:59I used to, I used to think I'm like, how many edit these
- 1:10:01podcasts? I'm going to load podcasts.
- 1:10:02I'm like, I, I forget the podcast's name sometimes.
- 1:10:05It's just, and I know what it is.
- 1:10:06It's stupid, but but I just let it go because it's just, it's
- 1:10:09real, right? It's like, hey, this happens and
- 1:10:11it's OK. It's not going to harm you.
- 1:10:13So sorry, I totally derailed that, that last part.
- 1:10:16Did anybody else have a locksmith one or, or can we
- 1:10:19pivot to something better? Can we?
- 1:10:21Can you give us an? Easier one.
- 1:10:24Sure I want. I want to get one, I want to get
- 1:10:26one, but I can't. Thing.
- 1:10:29OK, let's do. Let's do a different one.
- 1:10:31How about we do a location this time?
- 1:10:34Great. Parkinson's Parkinson's is like
- 1:10:37a race track. Like a race.
- 1:10:40Track how is. It's like a race track.
- 1:10:44I'm cheering from the sidelines. That's good.
- 1:10:51Thank you. Thank you.
- 1:10:53Parkinson's is like a race track where your pickers pit crew is
- 1:10:58always on coffee break. Oh.
- 1:11:01That's a good one, you that's. Awesome.
- 1:11:04Oh. My God.
- 1:11:07Parkinson's is like a race track because I never remember how
- 1:11:11many laps I've done. Yes.
- 1:11:16Parkinson's is like a race track because there may be unexplained
- 1:11:20skid marks. That was fine.
- 1:11:22I just had that. I was just about.
- 1:11:24I was going to say, Oh my God, Dan stole it.
- 1:11:27Dan stole it. Now I got a pivot in my own
- 1:11:30pivot. That was I was going to say, I
- 1:11:32thought I was so brilliant. I was going to say is it has
- 1:11:34skid marks just like my legs. OK, Good.
- 1:11:38I love it. I love it.
- 1:11:40That was awesome. We stole it.
- 1:11:42OK, OK. Keep going.
- 1:11:47Come on, guys. You guys got to throw some more
- 1:11:49out there because this reason a lot here, right?
- 1:11:50There's got to be a lot. Parkinson's is like a
- 1:11:57Parkinson's is like dragging on a race track with four flat
- 1:12:00tires. Oh yeah.
- 1:12:04Morgan is getting really good at this game.
- 1:12:08That was good. That was good.
- 1:12:11Markinson's is like a racetrack. Feels like going around in
- 1:12:15circles. It's still yours again.
- 1:12:23Oh, man, OK, yes, that's was that's I was going around and
- 1:12:26around and around. OK, all right, OK, let's keep
- 1:12:28going. Let's keep going.
- 1:12:29We're going to go to La Adela, so I get one.
- 1:12:32Yes, we will. Yes, we will.
- 1:12:33But everybody has to keep moving.
- 1:12:35It has to keep going. Parkinson's is like a racetrack
- 1:12:42where the driver forgot to put a seat belt on.
- 1:12:48Uh huh. Uh huh.
- 1:12:54Uh huh. OK, Parkinson's is like a
- 1:12:56racetrack. You're driving around and you're
- 1:12:59thinking, was there a prize involved?
- 1:13:10Oh my God, that's so funny. Oh my God, that is so good.
- 1:13:15Parkinson's is like a race track.
- 1:13:17There may be a crash involved. There may.
- 1:13:21Be there may be it could be a fiery crash involved that is
- 1:13:27good. Rice takes mine.
- 1:13:29Rice takes mine and makes them better.
- 1:13:42Oh, my gosh, that is so good. Parkinson's is like a racetrack.
- 1:13:47So because it's. Yeah, it's.
- 1:13:50I'm waiting for my wife to have a good one.
- 1:13:51You got one with me? No.
- 1:13:54You want to go because I have one.
- 1:13:56No, you go. I'm going to have a really good
- 1:13:57one. I'm going to have a good one.
- 1:13:58Coming where they forget to put get Parkinson's is like a
- 1:14:02racetrack where they forgot to put gas in the car.
- 1:14:06Wow. Yeah, I've got 1.
- 1:14:10Parkinson's is like a race track.
- 1:14:13Doping is allowed. I love that.
- 1:14:19Rosemary, that was really good. Thank you.
- 1:14:22That was really. Good.
- 1:14:23But I gotta say I when, when it comes to these sort of joke
- 1:14:27games, as an improviser myself, Dan and I perform in Vancouver,
- 1:14:31The joke game was one of the scariest things when I started
- 1:14:34doing improv. And you get to the good ones by
- 1:14:37going through the bad ones. Sometimes I will stand up at the
- 1:14:41mic and work through a joke for like 3 minutes.
- 1:14:46I'm standing or, or when I end them and I'm like, that one was
- 1:14:49a thinker. It's because the joke wasn't
- 1:14:52good and I just got to walk away.
- 1:14:54Just. Wait for the next one.
- 1:14:56Yeah, and that's part of it too. You know, you just kind of have
- 1:14:58fun. And in risking it being a bad
- 1:15:02joke, it doesn't matter. You know, we're all having fun
- 1:15:05with it together. Well, you know what, when I get
- 1:15:07up in the morning sometimes and like it's really funny because
- 1:15:10my day to days are different. So some mornings I can't, I
- 1:15:13can't even get out of bed. But if I have to like go to the
- 1:15:16restroom, I mean, I fly. So Parkinson's, it's like a
- 1:15:20racetrack because it's all gas, no brakes.
- 1:15:24Yes, yes, yes, yes. Boom.
- 1:15:29Like plumper cars. Boom.
- 1:15:32Boom, boom. Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:15:34My God, thank. You, Bryce, this is for you.
- 1:15:37All right, I got the race car. I got the race car.
- 1:15:42I was trying to come up with one with like the the girls that
- 1:15:44come out and just leave the flags I had, I had, you know,
- 1:15:48but I just couldn't get I couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't
- 1:15:50relate that to Parkinson's at all.
- 1:15:51That was just in my. I got one for that.
- 1:15:54Parkinson's is like the racetrack where the checkered
- 1:15:57flag is waving, but you're still stuck tying your shoes.
- 1:16:08Oh my God, you guys, this is amazing.
- 1:16:16This is so much fun. I I don't know, why wouldn't
- 1:16:18everybody? Why wouldn't every person with
- 1:16:21Parkinson's and without Parkinson's do this?
- 1:16:23I mean, it's a great, you know, I could imagine this would be
- 1:16:25good for caregivers too, just to kind of get some, you know,
- 1:16:28dessert. Is there any thoughts of of do
- 1:16:30you have classes for other Do other people other than just
- 1:16:33people with Parkinson's? Yeah, yeah, we do so in our
- 1:16:37Parkinson's classes. Care partners are certainly
- 1:16:39welcome, but we're working towards having a care partners
- 1:16:42group because we've we've heard the need and we want to respond
- 1:16:47to it. And then as improv for Wellness,
- 1:16:49we also offer classes. We run a brain health class with
- 1:16:55the BC Brain Wellness program, which is a whole mix of folks.
- 1:16:59Sometimes some are living with chronic brain injuries or
- 1:17:04varying mental illnesses or neurodivergences.
- 1:17:07We also have run programs for people who stutter.
- 1:17:12We've also run programs for people with Alzheimer's and
- 1:17:16other forms of dementia. A couple months ago, I did one
- 1:17:20where the group was experiencing different levels of expressive
- 1:17:26and receptive aphasia because they were all recovering from
- 1:17:30strokes. We also, on the other side of
- 1:17:34improv for work and Wellness, do team builders and communication
- 1:17:39courses. So yeah, we're trying to bring
- 1:17:41improv to a whole group, whole different groups of people, and
- 1:17:47take it towards them because improv is so adaptive and there
- 1:17:50are, you know, you can teach similar games in different ways
- 1:17:53or talk about it in different ways and really bring out the
- 1:17:57benefits for that specific community.
- 1:17:59So yeah. Did you say at the beginning,
- 1:18:02and so do you have people with Parkinson's and their partners
- 1:18:04come to together? Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:18:06We do often have care partners come in.
- 1:18:08In the class that I'm teaching right now.
- 1:18:09We have a a pair of the person with Parkinson's and their
- 1:18:14partner and also care partner. Really does the does the partner
- 1:18:17because the partner knows that the person with Parkinson's has
- 1:18:21a you know, a progressive non curable brain disorder?
- 1:18:26Do they let them win sometimes? Do you think do better than
- 1:18:31them? He's he's going down the path,
- 1:18:34you know. So when I look at him and say,
- 1:18:40honey, can you please take out the garbage today and then wait,
- 1:18:44the day goes by and it hasn't been taken out and I'll say,
- 1:18:49dear, you forgot to take the garbage out.
- 1:18:52He'll turn to me, hand to God, and we'll say, honey, I don't
- 1:18:57know if you know, but I have this progressive, horrible
- 1:19:01neurological disorder that. Sometimes affect my memory.
- 1:19:05Do you? Freaking believe the guy.
- 1:19:07He does that to me honestly. Oh.
- 1:19:09My God. I know.
- 1:19:12So that's where he was going with this.
- 1:19:14Yeah, she did it back to me. Yeah, coming back from Montreal
- 1:19:18or wherever heck we were. Yeah.
- 1:19:20I don't remember what you said. I don't know, but I said you
- 1:19:22can't use that. It's mine.
- 1:19:24You said, do you know I'm married to somebody who has a I
- 1:19:29like, you can't use that. That's mine.
- 1:19:33Oh my gosh. Parkinson's with Bryce is like a
- 1:19:36race track. All the trash bins are full at
- 1:19:39the end of the event. I love it.
- 1:19:47I love that. Oh my God.
- 1:19:48You know this has been so much fun.
- 1:19:50I'll tell you I'd like to leave not leave things, but again, if
- 1:19:53you want to find out more, we're going to have all this stuff in
- 1:19:55the description below. I implore you like click on
- 1:19:57that. I mean there's courses and
- 1:19:58classes starting you know these level ones, 2 threes people
- 1:20:01check it out. What do you have to lose?
- 1:20:05You know it could be fun. It should be fun.
- 1:20:06It This was fun and this is coming from someone who.
- 1:20:09Was really nervous about today. Like there is no way.
- 1:20:12Like I'm like Morgan Carmen, everybody like like come,
- 1:20:16because I'm not going on with these two people, these two, Dan
- 1:20:19and Rosemary, and I'm gonna just look like a like, they'll be
- 1:20:21like, oh, it's like a racetrack and I'll be like right.
- 1:20:26And you know, I was looking for support, but I mean, you guys
- 1:20:29were amazing at this. Unbelievable.
- 1:20:31But I want everybody just one last thing, like a final thought
- 1:20:38or statement, something that you want to say, something we didn't
- 1:20:40bring up or something that you want people to know.
- 1:20:42Rosemary, I'm gonna start with you.
- 1:20:45Well, the first thing I want to say is that on the note of
- 1:20:49there's nothing to lose, our classes are all free thanks to
- 1:20:53the support of Parkinson Canada who have been incredible
- 1:20:57supporters of the program. And recently in the last year,
- 1:20:59we applied for the Care Fund, as you know, and the Care Fund has
- 1:21:02been helping us reach folks across Canada and beyond.
- 1:21:07So if you're out there and you're like, I don't know, and
- 1:21:10maybe it'll cost, it's also free.
- 1:21:13Thank you, Parkinson, Canada. Amazing.
- 1:21:15So just when you and when you sign up, just say Bryce sent you
- 1:21:17and then it's free. That's what you said, but no,
- 1:21:22that's awesome. Yes, and, and I wanna say that
- 1:21:25for people who are unsure about improv, they can always talk to
- 1:21:29us too. I'm the manager of the programs
- 1:21:31and a lot of times during registration, sometimes people
- 1:21:34will just send me an e-mail and they're like, what is improv?
- 1:21:37I'm so scared of this. I don't know what it is and I'm
- 1:21:40more than willing to chat with you about it and, you know, talk
- 1:21:44through it and see if I can get you into the class.
- 1:21:48Rosary has been trying for 2 1/2 years with me now and we're
- 1:21:50close, right we're. Close I so close, I said Bryce
- 1:21:54is the final boss. So into your proper Parkinsons.
- 1:22:00Like the final level, the final boss to beat.
- 1:22:03So if you're listening to the podcast, please put in the
- 1:22:06comments. Bryce, you need to.
- 1:22:09Take I'm. Getting the community together
- 1:22:13to peer pressure you. Oh my God, I need to have those
- 1:22:16buttons. You know, we're like, we're just
- 1:22:19like off the air just for a second.
- 1:22:22That's awesome, Rosemary. I really like I really like you.
- 1:22:25Oh, I really like. You, I really like you and I
- 1:22:28forgot the last time we had a meeting, we were talking and you
- 1:22:30went I thought, I thought, I'm like I said, I was thinking in
- 1:22:33my head, oh, Rosemary's doing this from home because her
- 1:22:36mother just came over and thought said something to her.
- 1:22:38But I think you were in a coffee shop and stuff like that.
- 1:22:41You're too loud, I. Was I was, it's a coffee shop
- 1:22:44that I always go to and I always, always take meetings and
- 1:22:47the owner is a good friend of mine.
- 1:22:49Somebody else was there without headphones and complaints.
- 1:22:53Oh no. Well, that's terrible.
- 1:22:54Rotten whatever we embrace mistakes meeting.
- 1:22:58Love that. I love it.
- 1:23:00I love it, Dan. I would leave people with the
- 1:23:04thought that improv is about teamwork, and teamwork means
- 1:23:08that you're not alone. So your care partner, your
- 1:23:12caregivers, they're part of your team and you can become a better
- 1:23:16team player for the team that is helping you function with PD.
- 1:23:21And so when we get into this spontaneous creation, the skills
- 1:23:24that it takes, listening, spontaneity, teamwork, being
- 1:23:29present, these are all teamwork skills.
- 1:23:31So you can become a better team member and you can help the
- 1:23:35members of your team and join the new team that's going to
- 1:23:38take the class together with you.
- 1:23:40It's all about teamwork. We're in it together.
- 1:23:43Love that. I love it.
- 1:23:45How about you, Morgan? I'm.
- 1:23:50Just here. Now I'm just getting here.
- 1:23:51For the ride, you're still thinking of the ones for the
- 1:23:54racetrack, Yeah. I have too.
- 1:23:57I have too. I want to end with the pockets
- 1:23:58like with like a real zinger and I've tried my best to come up
- 1:24:01with like just like I. Do it all the time, no.
- 1:24:05I think I would say just take a chance.
- 1:24:08You'll never know what what you can find out there in terms of
- 1:24:12community and just making friends that are living like you
- 1:24:17and have similar interests to you.
- 1:24:19I mean, we've come across so many people who have said thank
- 1:24:22you for the programs that we've provided and partnered with.
- 1:24:25So again, you have nothing to lose if, if you hate it at the
- 1:24:28end of the day, just shut your computer.
- 1:24:30So that's, that's my encouragement.
- 1:24:33It's. Just.
- 1:24:34Take a chance, step out of your comfort zone.
- 1:24:36You never know what you you might like.
- 1:24:38That's nice, Carmen. Me too.
- 1:24:43Well, you're on the podcast. I, I think that first of all,
- 1:24:48improv was, is my my all time favorite thing.
- 1:24:52So I was rooting for you from day one.
- 1:24:55I've always said it's amazing and you're my heroes and I love
- 1:24:59it. She cries every time.
- 1:25:00Every time. Every time I watch.
- 1:25:03Videos and and you're doing the care fun videos.
- 1:25:05She's just bawling all the. Time I was very happy when you
- 1:25:07guys got it. So I was like, yeah, so I'm your
- 1:25:10biggest fan and I think that I hope that Bryce is encouraged to
- 1:25:16go and do it because again, it's part of the community, but it
- 1:25:20just it keeps it gets your brain going.
- 1:25:22And I've always said to Bryce, I mean, I I want him to do things
- 1:25:26that gets his brain going. So doing these podcasts are
- 1:25:28really good for him. And I tried to show him sudoku.
- 1:25:32And then once he gets expert at it, he doesn't want to do it
- 1:25:34anymore because it's like, you know, so but I I want to
- 1:25:38stimulate him and I want him and I think everybody that with PD
- 1:25:41needs that something and they should reach out to if they
- 1:25:44don't reach out to Parkinson Canada, certainly reach out to
- 1:25:46you guys and do the improv. So that's what I would say.
- 1:25:50I love it. Well, thank you.
- 1:25:52Thanks everybody for being on today.
- 1:25:54This is really fun. It's really cool.
- 1:25:56You know, in this podcast, I'm usually by myself and it's
- 1:25:58lonely and boring and down in my studio and I'm just no, I'm just
- 1:26:01teasing, but it was so much fun. I love what you guys do.
- 1:26:04I love that that were associated with you guys and yeah, it's I'm
- 1:26:11I'm I'll challenge my wife and Morgan because I think the three
- 1:26:14of us were always saying, you know, you're your biggest fan,
- 1:26:16So we're all be your big fan. So because we just we'd love
- 1:26:20what you guys are doing. We love the the feedback we get
- 1:26:23from people that have gone through and are, you know, have
- 1:26:26gone through the program and, and what they're saying is
- 1:26:29amazing. Like the feedback is just
- 1:26:33incredible. So so you know what if you want
- 1:26:36some more information like I said go to the links in the
- 1:26:38description below description below as Rosemary said she's
- 1:26:40available to you 24/7, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
- 1:26:43Just just make sure you don't call her when she's at the
- 1:26:46coffee shop because talking right loud there, but she's
- 1:26:50available to answer any of your questions.
- 1:26:52And remember, if you want to join for free, mention price,
- 1:26:56price when you register it. That way they'll know that you
- 1:26:59get your friends of mine. But I would just encourage you
- 1:27:02wherever you are, virtually, just start.
- 1:27:04You know, you have to start somewhere.
- 1:27:06And if not now, don't say you know what, maybe next week and
- 1:27:08every next month, maybe you know, if my question back would
- 1:27:11be if not now, then when? Right?
- 1:27:14There's no time like the presents, there's no time to
- 1:27:16drop in. And maybe this is your push.
- 1:27:18Maybe this is that gentle nudge where you can say, I'll give it
- 1:27:21a chance. I'll breakthrough that, that
- 1:27:23isolation, I'll breakthrough that, that that barrier that's
- 1:27:27holding me back. And you know what, maybe the
- 1:27:30next thing you know, you'll be in level 2, Level 3 and then
- 1:27:32maybe by the time I decided to take it, you'll be the
- 1:27:34instructor. So which would be so cool.
- 1:27:38But anyway, thank you guys appreciate it, Morgan, thank
- 1:27:39you. What you do at Parks of Canada,
- 1:27:41we're going to put the care Finder in there as well, where
- 1:27:43we can find the different programs in your area if you're
- 1:27:45in Canada. But, and, and, and thank you,
- 1:27:49the viewers, my listeners, thank you for, I don't know why you're
- 1:27:52taking this ride with me because I'm just, you're just don't even
- 1:27:55know what I'm doing, but we're good for doing it.
- 1:27:57So thank you for following it. And if you haven't already, make
- 1:28:00sure you join Bryce's inner circle.
- 1:28:02That's where we go deeper. It's deeper than just the videos
- 1:28:05where we have, you know, a monthly zoom call.
- 1:28:07It's a private community where you can chat, where you can, you
- 1:28:10know, get support, get some help.
- 1:28:13And, you know, who knows, maybe with some of these, one of these
- 1:28:15days, you'll find one of these characters in there.
- 1:28:16We'll we'll bring in and do like a special inner circle thing as
- 1:28:20well. So anyway, thanks again,
- 1:28:23everybody. Have a good day and I'll see you
- 1:28:24on the next podcast. All right, bye, bye.
