- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 119 and we
- 0:20are in the WAH section. That's aw, the WAH section, and
- 0:26that is verses 41 through 48. And all of these verses start
- 0:31with the Hebrew letter Wah. It's got words that start with
- 0:34that letter in the Hebrew alphabet.
- 0:36Psalm 119 is like the A-Z of the Word of God.
- 0:41And each of the 22 sections they start with one of the letters of
- 0:46the Hebrew alphabet. So the first 8 verses all start
- 0:50with the Hebrew equivalent to RA section, Section 2.
- 0:56All all of the verses start with the equivalent of our letter B.
- 1:01And so it walks through A to ZA, 176 verses in total looking at
- 1:06the word of God. And all of it is looking at
- 1:10God's instructions towards us, His relationship with us, and
- 1:14what our response is to be as a result.
- 1:16And so today in verses 41 through 48, there's kind of two
- 1:21main thoughts that we're going to look at, but I'm going to
- 1:23read through this passage. And as I've mentioned, each time
- 1:27the as we're walking through this portion of Scripture, it
- 1:31won't just say like, hey God, I love the Bible or I love
- 1:36Scripture. The psalmist puts a variety of
- 1:42ways that he describes the word of God.
- 1:45And so in this particular, in this particular portion of
- 1:50Scripture, the law section, God's words are described as his
- 1:54promises, what God has promised, God's word, the word of truth,
- 2:00God's judgments, God's instruction, God's precepts,
- 2:05God's decrees, his commands, and his statutes.
- 2:10And so those are the words that you're listening for, that all
- 2:13of this communicates. This is what God has told us.
- 2:17And so here's what we're going to do, or here's what we're
- 2:22going to feel as a result of God's declaration of himself and
- 2:27his ways to us. Let's start reading verse 41.
- 2:30Let your faithful love come to me, Yahweh, Your salvation as
- 2:34You promised. Then I can answer the one who
- 2:38taunts me, for I trust in Your word.
- 2:41Never take the word of truth from my mouth, for I hope in
- 2:46Your judgments I will always obey your instruction.
- 2:49Forever and ever I will walk freely in an open place because
- 2:55I study Your precepts. I will speak of Your decrees
- 2:59before kings and not be ashamed. I delight in your commands which
- 3:03I love. I will lift U my hands to your
- 3:07commands, which I love and will meditate on your statutes.
- 3:13OK, there's two main things that I want to look at today from
- 3:16Psalm 119 in the law section. It is this number one.
- 3:20God's word should be loved by us.
- 3:24God's word should be loved by us.
- 3:26I see this in verse 41. Let your faithful love come to
- 3:29me, Yahweh, your salvation as you promised.
- 3:33And then verses 47 and 48, I delight in your commands, which
- 3:37I love. I will lift up my hands to your
- 3:39commands, which I love here. The love for the Word of God is
- 3:45incredibly important in the life of the believer.
- 3:49I think of first Peter chapter 2 and I'm going to turn in my
- 3:52physical Bible over here. We walked through first Peter
- 3:57all together. I think this was many months ago
- 4:00now, but we can read this about what Peter says about the Word
- 4:05of God verse #23 of chapter 1. Going into chapter 2, he says
- 4:12you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of
- 4:17imperishable through the living and enduring Word of God.
- 4:21For all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of
- 4:25the grass. The grass Withers and the flower
- 4:27falls, but the Word of the Lord endures forever.
- 4:31And this word is the gospel that was proclaimed to you and then
- 4:35down in second, first Peter 2 verse 2, like newborn infants,
- 4:40desire the pure milk of the Word so that by it you may grow up
- 4:46into your salvation. There Peter highlights for us
- 4:51that the word of God is what gave us new life.
- 4:54It was the message of Jesus, of his forgiveness and his love of
- 4:59God's justice against sin, of our condemnation that we were
- 5:03going to experience. But God in Jesus Christ made
- 5:08that way that we could be reconciled to him.
- 5:11And so it is the word of God that brought us into
- 5:14relationship with God. It is the Word of God that
- 5:17allows us to grow, and we've been talking a lot about that
- 5:20over the past several episodes. And So what should our response
- 5:24be to the Word of God? What do we think about the
- 5:27gospel message? What do we think about the book
- 5:30of Psalms or the the stories in Genesis or the accounts of
- 5:36Joshua and the miracles that God worked there as Israel entered
- 5:41the land and as God gave it to them, taking it away from those
- 5:45who had been practicing idolatry and horrible evils and
- 5:49atrocities? What do we think of this Word of
- 5:52God? Well, I hear the Psalmist would
- 5:54say, I love it. I love the commands of God.
- 5:58Do you love the commands of God or is it an inconvenience for
- 6:04you? I think for myself sometimes I,
- 6:06I, I doubt that there is a person on this planet that does
- 6:10not experience this. That is, we come to the word of
- 6:14God, we go, OK, well, I know God doesn't really like this.
- 6:17Like I can read the verse and it's very clear to me God is
- 6:20against this, but I kind of like that and I feel like maybe my
- 6:26life would be better if I just continue doing that and just
- 6:31ignored this verse or this command.
- 6:34When the truth is because our entire existence occurred
- 6:40because God spoke and the world's were formed as we would
- 6:44hear in Hebrews 11, because we have been through the Word of
- 6:48God. It was a seed that was planted
- 6:53in our lives that bore fruit that now we believe in Jesus
- 6:58Christ as a result of the Word of God and we are now to be
- 7:01equipped with the Word so that we can grow up into our
- 7:06salvation. And though we have the Word as
- 7:09the sword of the Spirit to defend against Satan and his
- 7:12fiery darts, so often we don't value the word of God like we
- 7:18don't love it. We don't love being told that we
- 7:21are, pardon me, We don't love being told we're wrong in our in
- 7:27our attitude, in our temperament, in our vocabulary,
- 7:31in in our actions, in our over indulgence in the things that
- 7:36God has given us. We don't view we don't view
- 7:40God's word as being valuable. We don't love it.
- 7:42We don't spend time in it and instead we just take a very
- 7:47superficial view to the word of God.
- 7:51I love I've even done episodes of of Tabernacle talk going over
- 7:57the verse of the day from the you version Bible app.
- 8:00And I think especially when looking at context and looking
- 8:05at the meaning of of the verse within the book and within the
- 8:11section of the book that that verse is written, I think having
- 8:14a verse of the day can be really great.
- 8:16It can give you a starting point for where you spend time in the
- 8:20word. But I think so often what it can
- 8:23become is I read a sentence that was in a book that God gave to
- 8:31me. And so because I read the
- 8:33sentence and maybe it talks something about happiness or
- 8:37about joy or about God's presence, I am totally happy.
- 8:41And that's all I need for the day.
- 8:42And so long as I maybe can manage to pull up the verse of
- 8:47the day, then I'm good to go about the rest of the of my day.
- 8:51My friend, no, that is not what we are called to do as the
- 8:55people of God. The word of God ought to be
- 8:58all-encompassing in our soul that we learn the word.
- 9:03And you know, you are right now you're listening.
- 9:06You're 8 minutes into Tabernacle talk looking at Psalm 119,
- 9:12verses 41 through 48. This is something that obviously
- 9:16through your action, you have said I do care about the word of
- 9:20God and I want to hear from him. I want to encourage you continue
- 9:24to cultivate that. What some of the things that
- 9:26have so enriched my love for the word of God have been the Bible
- 9:32project and you guys hear me reference that often.
- 9:35They have a podcast, they have a website, they have YouTube
- 9:37videos, so many incredible resources that have made me fall
- 9:44in love. Especially they they go over all
- 9:46of the Bible, but especially their work in the Old Testament
- 9:49and in the language and specific vocabulary choices that the
- 9:55writers of the Old Testament used in order to paint beautiful
- 10:00pictures about our relationship with God, about the coming
- 10:03Messiah, about the hope that would be found and the certainty
- 10:07that God will make all things right.
- 10:09All of that is highlighted by the Bible Project.
- 10:13And so I love spending time in that.
- 10:17I'll say one other one, the Bible Talk podcast by it's by a
- 10:23couple professors from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in
- 10:26Louisville, KY. They, they publish it in
- 10:30connection with 9 Marks, which is a ministry out of the DC area
- 10:36encouraging faithful Bible teaching and, and classic
- 10:42Baptist, historical Baptist ecclesiology, which thankfully
- 10:47is not in the scope of the stuff for today.
- 10:49But Bible talk is another one of those where they've been walking
- 10:52through. So they've done Genesis, Genesis
- 10:55through Judges, and then they walked all the way through like
- 11:01Samuel and 1st and 2nd Kings. And now they are into Isaiah.
- 11:06So they're, they're learning all of the Bible and you can listen
- 11:10through and hear incredibly theologically astute professors
- 11:15who love the word of God and are enchanted by it.
- 11:18They, they love the word. And so as a result, it causes
- 11:22you to love the word. So spend time around other
- 11:25people that also love the word of God that they want to talk
- 11:28about it. That as you have questions, it's
- 11:30not like, oh, well, what good is that to to my time?
- 11:33I'd rather spend my time doing something else.
- 11:35No spend time with those that love the Word of God and you
- 11:39will grow to love the Word of God.
- 11:42I could talk for a lot longer about loving the Word, but I'm
- 11:46going to continue on with the second thought that I wanted us
- 11:48to look at today. So #1 love the Word of God #2 is
- 11:53the actions that we can take as a result of what we learned from
- 11:57the Word of God. So it's not just read and it's
- 12:01not just think about that. We're going to look briefly at
- 12:05that at the very end of this section.
- 12:07It's not just read or think about.
- 12:08It's now I can take some action steps as a result of what I have
- 12:13learned from the word. So verse #42 I can answer the
- 12:18one who taunts me, for I trust in Your Word and I'm thankful
- 12:22that there is a response that the child of God can give to
- 12:27those that do not believe or do not obey the Lord as a result of
- 12:32what they know. I'm going to turn over real
- 12:34quick in first Peter chapter 3 because Peter mentioned
- 12:38something kind of like this. He says in verse #15 he says in
- 12:43your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time
- 12:49to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the
- 12:53hope that is in you. There.
- 12:56We can give an answer to unbelievers when we know the
- 13:00Word of God, when we trust and believe Scripture.
- 13:03Our answer doesn't have to be, well, I think this or my opinion
- 13:07is this. We can say here with the
- 13:10Psalmist and with Peter, here's what Christ says.
- 13:13Here's what the Lord has said. And so I have an answer for
- 13:17those that despise God. Not in a, OK, well, they're
- 13:21attacking me kind of way, but no, in a they, they did
- 13:26disbelieve the Lord. They don't love him, they don't
- 13:28follow him. But I'm going to encourage them
- 13:30with the word of God. And since the word of God is
- 13:33what made me a child of God and what made you a child of God,
- 13:37that is what can work for others that we point them to the
- 13:41message of Scripture. Ultimately, of course, Jesus
- 13:45Christ and the gospel being the consummate message of the Word
- 13:48of God, so we can answer when people have questions or
- 13:53objections or hear taunts. It's even when people aren't
- 13:56responding well, you can respond with the Word of God verse #44
- 14:02He says, I will always obey your instruction forever and ever.
- 14:07We can actually take action steps based on the Word of God.
- 14:11I know Psalm 119, sorry. I know the book of Psalms is a
- 14:16wonderful treasure for so many people, but I want to encourage
- 14:19you don't just say, OK, I'm going to do a, a Psalm for the
- 14:23day. Now, if that's all that you are
- 14:25able to have time for, you're busy.
- 14:27You're like me, you got some toddlers, you got some kids.
- 14:29You're like, man, I'm busy, wonderful.
- 14:31And any portion of the word of God is going to be good for you.
- 14:34But also, if you read through the book of Proverbs, if you
- 14:39read through the epistles, that's like Romans through Jude,
- 14:45you are going to see the commands of God that you can
- 14:48actually obey. Often in Psalms, there will
- 14:51sometimes be things of like, don't put your trust in
- 14:54Princess, praise the Lord's. You know, I, I think last
- 14:59episode we looked at a command that was given to take our eyes
- 15:03off of dishonest gain or take our eyes off of money and what
- 15:06money can buy. But there are more specific
- 15:09commands that are given to us in the rest of Scripture that we
- 15:13can obey. And if you're just reading
- 15:15perhaps a Psalm, you might not see all of the commands that God
- 15:19has for you. So pair Scripture with
- 15:21Scripture. So you might say, OK, I'm going
- 15:23to read a Psalm and get some encouragement for my day today.
- 15:27And then I'm also going to read, you know, the letter of Jude,
- 15:30it's 2525 verses, super, super short book.
- 15:35Or I'm going to read second John, which is all the 12
- 15:38verses. And I'm going to read the
- 15:39commands that God has for me there.
- 15:41And then I'm going to obey the word of God.
- 15:43If all you ever do is ingest scripture, but it never affects
- 15:47your behavior, you are going to be impoverished.
- 15:50That's not the point that God has for you.
- 15:52He doesn't want you to just become a great reader.
- 15:55He wants you to be a doer, or as James tells us in James one,
- 15:59don't just be a hearer of the word, but be a doer of the Word.
- 16:05OK then verse #45 he says I will walk freely in an open place
- 16:11because I study your precepts. He says there is freedom found
- 16:16when you are walking according to God's way.
- 16:18So when you are following the Lord, you don't have to worry
- 16:21about maintaining a particular lie.
- 16:25You don't have to be scared about that because you you're
- 16:28able to say I walk in the truth because my God is truth.
- 16:31He commands me to tell the truth and so I can just live safe.
- 16:36You don't have to worry about your spouse finding you know,
- 16:42inappropriate picture from someone else or a text from
- 16:47someone else on your phone because you say I am faithful to
- 16:51my spouse and so I don't have to worry.
- 16:53And so I have freedom in this relationship.
- 16:55You don't have to worry about like avoiding a particular
- 16:59person because you cheated them or you swindled them.
- 17:02You you've said I am going to walk in open honest relationship
- 17:07with those around me, loving, caring relationship.
- 17:10And so when I see people, yeah, they might have done wrong by
- 17:15me, but I have not done wrong by them.
- 17:17And so I can have an openness and I can talk to people and
- 17:20there is freedom that is found for the child of God as they
- 17:25walk according to the precepts of God.
- 17:28I think of the verse in Galatians 5 where Paul says
- 17:32where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
- 17:36And what a joy that we can answer opponents with the word
- 17:40of God. We can obey the Word of God and
- 17:43see our lives transformed and changed.
- 17:45We can find freedom as we pursue God's way and not our own.
- 17:50And then verse 46, I will speak of your decrees before kings and
- 17:54not be ashamed. You can, if you will, you can
- 17:57testify. You can give testimony.
- 17:59You can share with other people, even kings, even royalty.
- 18:04You could tell them about what God has told you.
- 18:08You are not responsible for telling other people what you do
- 18:12not know. That's someone else's
- 18:14responsibility. If if someone were to ask, hey,
- 18:17Brian, I really have a lot of questions about, you know, Old
- 18:23Testament manuscripts. I know a couple of things, but
- 18:27that's not my area of expertise. That's not one of the things
- 18:31that I have invested a lot of my time in.
- 18:34I have friends that have spent a lot of time in that.
- 18:37And so I would say, hey, this person would be a great one for
- 18:41you to talk to. Now if someone asks, hey, I
- 18:44don't know how to be saved. Like I don't know how to know
- 18:47that I'm on my way to heaven, that I have a relationship with
- 18:51God. Well, God has told me that I do
- 18:53know how because I accepted the Lord and I know, I know that I'm
- 18:57headed for heaven. And so I can tell someone else
- 19:01what I have learned, someone might not ask you, hey, would
- 19:04you explain the Trinity and the difference between, you know,
- 19:09modalism and Arianism and like historical theological belief in
- 19:15the Trinity? You might not know some of those
- 19:18answers. I, I know a couple of those
- 19:19answers, but God hasn't asked you to communicate what he has
- 19:24not told you yet. And so just be faithful to tell
- 19:28what God has told you. And that might be something
- 19:31simple. It might be something about
- 19:32being kind to someone else or offering forgiveness or being
- 19:35generous in the way that you live.
- 19:38Whatever God has told you, go tell it to someone else.
- 19:41Don't keep it inside. Don't just say, well, I read it
- 19:44and that's enough. No, if if you read it, it means
- 19:47that God has a purpose for you to go tell someone else about
- 19:50it. And then in verse 48, as we
- 19:53close, I will lift up my hands to your commands.
- 19:56Praise, worship of the Lord should occur when we read the
- 20:00Word of God. When we read the word, our
- 20:02reaction should be God, you are great, you are holy, you are
- 20:05loving, you are generous, you are the victor.
- 20:09And so I'm going to worship you. I'm going to praise you because
- 20:12you are worthy of it. Here.
- 20:14This lifting up of hands, it's like in victory.
- 20:17And then at the end of verse say I will meditate on your
- 20:21statutes. It is.
- 20:22I'm not just going to read it one time.
- 20:23I'm not just going to hear it one time.
- 20:25I'm going to keep on thinking about it.
- 20:27I'm going to remember, Hey, I remember when my buddy Owen or
- 20:31I'm going to remember when Gary, or I'm going to remember when
- 20:34Martha or Brenda mentioned this verse.
- 20:37And I'm going to keep on thinking about that verse all
- 20:39throughout my week. I'm not going to let the Word of
- 20:42God just kind of fall flat in my life.
- 20:44No, I'm going to keep on bringing it up, listening to it
- 20:47over and over and over again. So what should we do with the
- 20:52Word of God? We should love it.
- 20:53We should use it then to answer opponents.
- 20:57We should obey it. We should not just read it.
- 21:00We can find freedom as a result of walking in the Word of God.
- 21:04We can speak about it to others. That what we have heard, what
- 21:07we've read, we're going to pass on to someone else.
- 21:10We're going to praise as a result of what we have read in
- 21:14the Word of God. And we're going to keep on
- 21:16thinking about it. We're going to meditate on it.
- 21:19Thanks for tuning in today. And next time we're going to be
- 21:22looking at verses 49 through 56 under the Hebrew letter Zayin.
- 21:26Thanks for tuning in. Have a wonderful day.
