  And what's interesting is that they kind of all orbit around a
• 4:04
  similar part of the
• 4:05
  SPEAKER_00: chart,
• 4:06
  SPEAKER_00: the ascendant or the rising sign,
• 4:09
  SPEAKER_00: but not in a super beginner-y kind of way.

  These are the questions that tend to come up a lot for people
• 4:17
  when you've moved
• 4:18
  SPEAKER_00: past just,
• 4:19
  SPEAKER_00: you know,
• 4:20
  SPEAKER_00: learning what things mean,
• 4:22
  SPEAKER_00: and you start noticing nuance.

  SPEAKER_00: You start asking things like,

  SPEAKER_00: Okay, but what about this situation?

  SPEAKER_00: Or what if this overlaps with that?

  Or why does this feel a little bit different than what I would

  have expected?

  SPEAKER_00: And that's where astrology starts to get super duper interesting.

  SPEAKER_00: So let's start with the first question of the day.

  SPEAKER_00: The first question that came in,
• 4:49
  SPEAKER_00: and by the way,
• 4:51
  a lot of the questions I got were like the same question or
• 4:55
  maybe just different
• 4:56
  SPEAKER_00: ways of asking a similar question,
• 4:59
  SPEAKER_00: right?
• 4:59
  SPEAKER_00: Like sometimes the same stuff comes up a lot like as a theme.

  So the first question that came in did come in multiple times
• 5:07
  and it was about
• 5:08
  SPEAKER_00: having a late degree rising sign.
• 5:11
  SPEAKER_00: So this would be something like, you know, 27, 28, 29 degrees of a sign.
• 5:17
  SPEAKER_00: Maybe earlier than that, honestly.
• 5:19
  I'm going to say the last decanate of a sign or anything
• 5:24
  between 20 and 29 degrees of a sign.
• 5:29
  SPEAKER_00: And the question was specifically,
• 5:31
  if your rising sign is at a late degree and most of your first
• 5:36
  house falls into the
• 5:38
  SPEAKER_00: next sign,
• 5:39
  Does that mean you're actually more like that next sign than
• 5:43
  you are like your rising sign?
• 5:45
  SPEAKER_00: So in other words,
• 5:47
  SPEAKER_00: if your rising sign is at 27 degrees of Leo,
• 5:51
  are you still a true Leo rising or are you really more like a
• 5:56
  Virgo rising?
• 5:57
  SPEAKER_00: Because using most house systems,
• 5:59
  SPEAKER_00: well,
• 6:00
  SPEAKER_00: any other one than whole sign houses,
• 6:02
  SPEAKER_00: most of your first house will fall into Virgo.

  And I love this question because it's one of those moments
• 6:09
  where you can feel
• 6:10
  someone just like thinking their way through their chart and
• 6:14
  trying to compare what
• 6:16
  SPEAKER_00: they're learning with their lived experience.
• 6:18
  SPEAKER_00: Like they're not just memorizing things anymore.
• 6:22
  SPEAKER_00: They're really trying to make observations.
• 6:25
  SPEAKER_00: So let's slow this down a little and answer this.

  SPEAKER_00: I'm going to revisit a prior episode on decanates for just a minute here.
• 6:35
  SPEAKER_00: If you've listened to earlier episodes,
• 6:37
  SPEAKER_00: you may remember that every zodiac sign spans 30 degrees.
• 6:43
  SPEAKER_00: And each one of those 30 degrees are not meaningless.
• 6:48
  SPEAKER_00: Every degree on the zodiac wheel is different and has meaning.
• 6:54
  SPEAKER_00: They are not all the same.
• 6:57
  SPEAKER_00: Now, the 30 degrees of a particular sign...
• 7:01
  SPEAKER_00: They're divided into three sections, what we call decans or decanates.
• 7:06
  SPEAKER_00: So 0 to 9 degrees is the first decan,
• 7:09
  SPEAKER_00: 10 to 19 is the second decan,
• 7:12
  SPEAKER_00: and 20 to 29 is the third decan.
• 7:17
  And each of those sections,
• 7:19
  those decans,
• 7:19
  expresses the sign a little bit differently.
• 7:24
  SPEAKER_00: It's like a phased approach.
• 7:25
  SPEAKER_00: Okay.

  SPEAKER_00: And no Deccan was better or worse.
• 7:29
  SPEAKER_00: They're just different.
• 7:30
  SPEAKER_00: So when we're talking about a late degree ascendant sign,
• 7:35
  we're talking about someone who is at the very end of that
• 7:39
  sign's expression or the
• 7:41
  SPEAKER_00: last phase of that sign's expression.

  And this is where things get interesting still because a late
• 7:48
  degree placement can
• 7:50
  sometimes feel like you're not just learning about the energy
• 7:55
  of that sign for the
• 7:56
  SPEAKER_00: first time,
• 7:57
  SPEAKER_00: right?
• 7:57
  It's more like you're really refining the energy or the use of
• 8:02
  that sign's energy.
• 8:03
  You're refining the energy of that particular sign or maybe
• 8:09
  you're deepening into it.

  SPEAKER_00: You're settling into it.
• 8:13
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 8:13
  And I would actually say you're mastering it and you're
• 8:16
  possibly showing that
• 8:19
  SPEAKER_00: mastery to others and exemplifying it.

  You might be showing others how to be in that energy and what's
• 8:27
  actually possible
• 8:29
  SPEAKER_00: when you can master the energy of that sign.

  SPEAKER_00: So what do each of these decanates mean?
• 8:35
  So the first is like you've jumped into something new,
• 8:39
  something new for you,
• 8:40
  at least.
• 8:41
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 8:41
  SPEAKER_00: You saw a swimming pool or a lake or something,
• 8:44
  SPEAKER_00: and you've decided to just you've jumped in and have that experience.

  SPEAKER_00: Right.

  SPEAKER_00: So.

  SPEAKER_00: You're in, you can feel that energy swirling all around you.

  And,

  you know,
• 8:56
  you're not a master of that environment yet,

  but you're in the environment.

  SPEAKER_00: And your experience of that energy is open-minded and pure and unmuddied.

  SPEAKER_00: It's a very innocent expression of the sign, very pure expression.

  SPEAKER_00: You're in beginner's mind, really.

  SPEAKER_00: You're learning about it and you just want to see what happens.

  SPEAKER_00: Then we have the middle decanate.

  SPEAKER_00: You're just, you know, out in the middle of that pool.

  SPEAKER_00: You're doing your thing.

  SPEAKER_00: You're not a beginner.

  SPEAKER_00: You know what you're doing now.

  You're not the master yet either,

  but you do know how to use that energy very competently.

  SPEAKER_00: You know the energy pretty well now, and you're doing things.

  SPEAKER_00: You're making stuff happen.

  SPEAKER_00: You're just out there doing the thing.

  SPEAKER_00: Things are humming along according to the energy of that sign.

  SPEAKER_00: But the last decanate is,

  SPEAKER_00: as I just said,

  SPEAKER_00: where you really,
• 9:51
  really deepen your understanding of all the things you can do

  with the energy of

  SPEAKER_00: You're at the mastery level.

  You don't want to stay in this sign's energy forever,

  lifetime after lifetime.

  SPEAKER_00: You want to go on and work with other energies too.

  SPEAKER_00: So there can be this sense of let's graduate and move on.

  So there can sometimes be a feeling of pressure around it,

  or like the stakes feel higher now.

  And sometimes you'll find in your real life that the external

  world will apply

  SPEAKER_00: aka lessons,

  SPEAKER_00: that are designed to make sure that you do get it.

  It's important to think of each sign in this layered kind of
• 10:39
  way,

  I guess.

  Being in a sign's energy isn't just about being in it or not in
• 10:45
  it or how far away
• 10:47
  SPEAKER_00: you are from the next sign.
• 10:49
  It's where you are in the evolution of your understanding and
• 10:54
  use of that sign's energy.
• 10:56
  SPEAKER_00: But no matter where in the sign you are,
• 10:59
  SPEAKER_00: you're still in that sign's energy,

  no matter what degree your ascendant is at or what degree any
• 11:05
  planet is at,
• 11:06
  SPEAKER_00: because you can apply this logic to any planet or any body in your chart.

  SPEAKER_00: You are still in the energy of that sign.

  SPEAKER_00: 29 degrees Taurus rising is still Taurus rising.

  SPEAKER_00: Nothing about that changes.

  SPEAKER_00: A 29 degree Taurus rising is,

  SPEAKER_00: you know,

  SPEAKER_00: here under a higher degree of pressure because 29 is a critical degree.

  And they're under pressure to make sure that they fully
• 11:34
  understand Taurus energy.

  SPEAKER_00: and how to work with it,

  SPEAKER_00: and to be sure they've fully integrated its lessons,
• 11:43
  SPEAKER_00: and possibly to exemplify the sign of Taurus to others,

  SPEAKER_00: or even consciously show others how to work with it.

  SPEAKER_00: It's like how to be in Taurus energy, right?

  That is a completely different set of lessons to take on than

  if you had incarnated

  SPEAKER_00: Which is just one degree away.

  your life lessons would be around swimming in a brand new

  I don't want to discount your own experience if you have a late

  SPEAKER_00: Is it because I'm a late degree Taurus rising, right?

  Because if you're using a house system like Placidus or you're
• 12:47
  just not using whole
• 12:48
  SPEAKER_00: sign houses,
• 12:49
  then it's true that most of your first house is actually
• 12:53
  falling into that next
• 12:54
  SPEAKER_00: sign of Gemini.

  SPEAKER_00: Again, let's use the same example.

  SPEAKER_00: Let's just keep this example going.

  SPEAKER_00: Taurus rising at 29 degrees.

  you have that one degree,

  the very first degree of your first house in Taurus.

  SPEAKER_00: You're here to integrate and master Taurus energy and exemplify it.

  SPEAKER_00: You are still likely to be perceived by other people as a Taurus rising.

  SPEAKER_00: that's exactly what you are here to do because of that late degree,

  SPEAKER_00: because of it,

  So in terms of what other people see,

  that's what should come across first.

  But then as people get to know you better and have known you

  They might pick up on a sense of comfort with the way you move

  Now from your side of things,

  You're still primarily here to fully integrate the Taurus

  at what comes next for you in the distance and maybe even

  trying it on a little,

  You get to experiment with some of those qualities of that next

  sign and try them

  You could have personality traits as a result of them or

  physical features,

  especially because our rising signs and our first house energy

  does show up in our

  SPEAKER_00: And all of these traits can be tools for you.

  But the purpose of your time here is still primarily oriented

  around the rising sign.

  If I totally feel like my rising sign or you've heard someone

  else say that it

  could be that you're identifying with some of those particular
• 16:40
  personality traits

  the bigger themes that keep showing up for you in your life

  SPEAKER_00: And this was about planets being conjunct the ascendant.

  And specifically,

  the questions that came in tended to go something like this.

  If you have a planet sitting right on top of your ascendant
• 17:19
  line or very near it,
• 17:21
  SPEAKER_00: does that planet become your chart ruler instead of the ruler,
• 17:26
  SPEAKER_00: the planetary ruler of your rising sign?
• 17:30
  SPEAKER_00: So in other words,
• 17:31
  SPEAKER_00: if you're a Libra rising,
• 17:33
  SPEAKER_00: but you have Mars on top of your ascendant line,
• 17:36
  SPEAKER_00: is Venus still your chart ruler?
• 17:38
  SPEAKER_00: Or is Mars kind of become sort of like a surrogate chart ruler?
• 17:42
  SPEAKER_00: The short answer is no.
• 17:44
  SPEAKER_00: But of course, I'm going to elaborate.
• 17:46
  The chart ruler is always the planet that rules the sign on
• 17:52
  your ascendant.
• 17:53
  SPEAKER_00: So if you're a Libra rising, Venus is your chart ruler, 100%.

  Even if you have Pluto or Mars or the sun or any other planet
• 18:04
  sitting right there
• 18:05
  SPEAKER_00: on top of the ascendant.

  SPEAKER_00: But,
• 18:08
  SPEAKER_00: and this is where I just want to slow down a little bit again,
• 18:12
  SPEAKER_00: a planet that is conjunct the ascendant is incredibly powerful.

  it will have a very profound impact on your psyche,

  your persona,
• 18:24
  and your life path.

  SPEAKER_00: And sometimes people,

• 18:29

  SPEAKER_00: Aquarius is co-ruled by Saturn and Uranus.

  SPEAKER_00: And Pisces is co-ruled by Jupiter and Neptune.

  SPEAKER_00: The rest of the signs just have one planetary ruler.

  When the concept of astrology in the way that we now know it

  SPEAKER_00: this is what we now call Hellenistic astrology.

  Astrologers were working essentially with what they could see
• 23:32
  in the sky with the naked eye.

  SPEAKER_00: They did not have the telescopes we now have.
• 23:39
  SPEAKER_00: What they could see with the naked eye included the Sun,
• 23:42
  SPEAKER_00: the Moon,
• 23:43
  SPEAKER_00: Mercury,
• 23:44
  SPEAKER_00: Venus,
• 23:44
  SPEAKER_00: Mars,
• 23:45
  SPEAKER_00: Jupiter,
• 23:46
  SPEAKER_00: and Saturn.
• 23:47
  SPEAKER_00: That's it.
• 23:48
  Those seven visible bodies formed the entire framework of
• 23:53
  astrology at the time.
• 23:55
  SPEAKER_00: And the system of rulerships was built around each of these bodies.

  SPEAKER_00: And it was done very carefully through lots and lots of effort.
• 24:05
  SPEAKER_00: Tons of effort was put into figuring all of this out.
• 24:10
  SPEAKER_00: Now,
• 24:11
  each one of these planets that could be seen with the naked eye
• 24:15
  was assigned to one
• 24:16
  SPEAKER_00: or two signs in a way that created a kind of balance across the zodiac.
• 24:23
  SPEAKER_00: Now, fast forward through the millennia, telescopes were developed.
• 24:29
  And eventually,
• 24:30
  three additional planets were discovered over time,
• 24:34
  right?
• 24:34
  SPEAKER_00: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
• 24:38
  SPEAKER_00: And it was as this was happening that things began to change.
• 24:42
  SPEAKER_00: Because once these planets were discovered and then observed over time,
• 24:48
  astrologers started to notice that their symbolism seemed to
• 24:54
  align things.
• 24:55
  SPEAKER_00: very well with certain signs.
• 24:58
  SPEAKER_00: So Uranus began to be associated with Aquarius and its themes of,
• 25:04
  SPEAKER_00: you know,
• 25:04
  SPEAKER_00: innovation and change and individuality.
• 25:09
  SPEAKER_00: Neptune aligned well with Pisces and its
• 25:13
  imagination and spirituality and dissolving boundaries and all
• 25:17
  these kinds of things.

  And Pluto lined up very well with Scorpio because of things
• 25:24
  like transformation and
• 25:26
  SPEAKER_00: depth and power and then rebirth.
• 25:30
  SPEAKER_00: And over time,
• 25:31
  SPEAKER_00: these associations became strong enough that modern astrologers,
• 25:37
  SPEAKER_00: many of them,
• 25:38
  SPEAKER_00: began using these outer planets as rulers of those signs.

  SPEAKER_00: However,
• 25:44
  it's really important to note that even as people started using
• 25:49
  these outer planets
• 25:51
  SPEAKER_00: more,
• 25:51
  SPEAKER_00: the original rulership system did not go away.
• 25:55
  The original rulership system is still very accurate,

  still used very,
• 26:01
  very widely.

  SPEAKER_00: And so what we now have is kind of like two layers.

  SPEAKER_00: It's like a double layered thing.

  We have the traditional rulers,

  which come from the original visible planet system.

  Lots of astrologers still prefer this system,

  and it works incredibly well.

  And we also have the modern rulers,
• 26:26
  which were added later based on observation.

  SPEAKER_00: So it's not really that one replaced the other.

  SPEAKER_00: It's more just that we expanded our knowledge of the sky.

  SPEAKER_00: Right.

  SPEAKER_00: Both are correct.

  SPEAKER_00: So the question of which one should I be using?

  SPEAKER_00: If you've ever felt confused about this, you're not alone.

  SPEAKER_00: You know, they're both correct, though.

  SPEAKER_00: Neither is wrong.

  SPEAKER_00: It's really just a matter of preference and perspective.

  So sometimes you'll hear people say that traditional rulers are

  used more for

  personal astrology and modern rulers are used more for societal

  or cultural themes.

  SPEAKER_00: And there is a reason for that.

  The traditional planets are visible,
• 27:14
  as we said,

  they move more quickly and
• 27:17
  SPEAKER_00: and have a bigger impact on our day-to-day lives.

  And so they tend to impact our personality and our regular
• 27:26
  conditions and everyday lives more.

  SPEAKER_00: The outer planets move very slowly,

  SPEAKER_00: They tend to impact long-term issues in our lives,
• 27:36
  and they also tend to show up in ways that feel bigger than
• 27:42
  just one individual.

  SPEAKER_00: They're more generational because they do stay in a sign for so long,

  SPEAKER_00: and they're more collective in nature.

  But it's not necessarily,

  that this system is for this and that one is for that.

  using the traditional ruler to describe how something shows up

  SPEAKER_00: choices while I see the modern ruler as describing deeper life themes or,

  SPEAKER_00: longer story arcs in a person's life that play out over many years.

  SPEAKER_00: So if we take Scorpio as an example,

  SPEAKER_00: Mars might describe how someone reacts right in the moment,

  SPEAKER_00: how they assert themselves,

  SPEAKER_00: how they protect themselves.

  SPEAKER_00: But Pluto, that might be a longer,

  SPEAKER_00: a deeper kind of story, right?

  SPEAKER_00: A story of transformation.

  Like it could be just this long story arc of transformation

  that changes them over

  SPEAKER_00: time and in a way that can't be,

  SPEAKER_00: And you really need both, I think, to understand the full picture.

  So they're here to exemplify those themes,

  be a representative for them,
