- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Well, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we just finished Isaiah's little apocalypse and we are
- 0:22back in, if you will, God's. I'm going to phrase it this way.
- 0:27This is going to be stupid. And if I have any, uh, what are
- 0:31often termed Theo Bros on the Internet, they're going to be
- 0:34like, well, actually this is totally incorrect because, but
- 0:38I'm going to call it God's parent teacher meetings with the
- 0:42nations of the world that he has said Babylon is in trouble.
- 0:46He has said Assyria is in trouble, Moab is in trouble.
- 0:49Edom, Egypt, all of these nations, they are in trouble.
- 0:55And today we pick back up in chapter 28 with the northern
- 1:00Kingdom of Israel with its capital city of Samaria.
- 1:05And they are in trouble. So let's read through this
- 1:08together. Isaiah 28 and verse #1 woe to
- 1:12the majestic crown of Ephraim's drunkards.
- 1:16So Ephraim was one of the larger tribes that made-up that
- 1:23northern Kingdom of Israel. And so that's the favorite son
- 1:29of Joseph. And well, I don't even know if I
- 1:34want to go so far as to say that it was Jacob's favorite grandson
- 1:39of his favorite son. And so Ephraim is often talked
- 1:44about like that's the baby boy of Joseph, who was the favorite
- 1:49son of Jacob. And so there's great familial
- 1:52love that's there. But Ephraim, over and over again
- 1:56throughout the biblical story, did not do what was right.
- 1:59And So what they did as a group of people, as a tribe, was often
- 2:04emblematic of what the whole northern Kingdom of Israel was
- 2:09doing here. That they are drunkards
- 2:13together, and there is an abuse of wine or beer.
- 2:18And here it says, woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim's
- 2:22drunkards, and to the fading flower of its beautiful
- 2:26splendor, which is on the summit above the rich valley.
- 2:29Woe to those overcome with wine. Look, the Lord has a strong and
- 2:35mighty one. Like a devastating hailstorm,
- 2:38like a storm with strong flooding water, He will bring it
- 2:42across the land with his hand. This is one of those ways that
- 2:47Assyria was talked about even earlier in one of the chapters
- 2:52that we've been in previously, that this group, this army is
- 2:56going to come through like a flood over the land.
- 3:01Verse #3 The majestic crown of Ephraim's drunkards will be
- 3:05trampled under foot. The feeding flower of his
- 3:09beautiful splendor, which is on the summit above the rich
- 3:12valley, will be like a ripe fig before the summer harvest.
- 3:16Whoever sees it will swallow it while it is still in his hand.
- 3:21That is, the richness, the greatness, the pleasant things
- 3:24in life will be taken away, will be snatched away from this
- 3:28nation. Verse #5 On that day Yahweh of
- 3:31heaven's armies will become a crown of beauty and a diadem of
- 3:35splendor to the remnant of His people.
- 3:38A spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment and
- 3:42strength to those who repel attacks at the city gate.
- 3:45That though overall the nation of Israel would be taken into
- 3:50exile into Assyria for those that were left, they would come
- 3:54to trust and follow the Lord. That they would find him to be
- 3:59the they would find God to be their favorite possession like
- 4:05the thing that made them them, the one that they would call on
- 4:11the one that they would find justice and right treatment of
- 4:15others in. That's what we read in verse
- 4:17number six, a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment.
- 4:20And they would find strength in God to be able to overcome the
- 4:24difficulties that they would encounter in a land in which
- 4:29they were no longer self reliant or self ruling, but under heavy
- 4:33taxation and abuse from a foreign power that would have
- 4:39some leftover troops and things still stationed in the land.
- 4:44And so these people, the nation would be overcome, but God would
- 4:50be there for those that were left.
- 4:52Verse #7 Even these stagger because of wine and stumble
- 4:57under the influence of beer. Priest and prophet stagger
- 5:01because of beer. Oh, sorry, yeah, no, I had that
- 5:04right. They are confused by wine.
- 5:06They stumble because of beer. They are muddled in their
- 5:09visions. They stumble in their judgments.
- 5:12So we talked about this a little bit back in Leviticus.
- 5:17One of the things that God said was if you are in any sort of
- 5:21position where you're supposed to be making decisions,
- 5:25especially decisions about other people, or when you're engaging
- 5:28in the worship of the Lord, you are not to be engaging in
- 5:34drunkenness. We saw this with Aaron's two
- 5:38sons that were drunk, offered forbidden incense on the altar
- 5:44of the Lord and they were killed as a result.
- 5:47And so God said there is to be no drinking when you are
- 5:51performing the sacrifices and those things for the Lord.
- 5:55And here these people that should be helping the people to
- 5:59make right decisions, they have no self-control.
- 6:04They can't control themselves, let alone encourage the people
- 6:07to control themselves either. And so they are making wrong
- 6:12decisions that are affecting other people.
- 6:15Verse #8 Indeed, all their tables are covered with vomit.
- 6:19There is no place without a stench.
- 6:22Who is he trying to teach? Who is he trying to instruct?
- 6:26Infants just weaned from milk. Babies removed from the breast,
- 6:31law after law, law after law, line after line, line after
- 6:35line, a little here, a little there.
- 6:38For he will speak to this people with stammering speech and in a
- 6:43foreign language. He had said to them, This is the
- 6:46place of rest, let the weary rest.
- 6:48This is the place of repose. But they would not listen.
- 6:54So God had this place that was supposed to be for their good.
- 6:57And yet there's almost kind of a rejection of the law of God, the
- 7:02way that he had outlined how Israel's relationship with one
- 7:06another, with the land itself, with foreigners and with God was
- 7:11supposed to work. And instead, verse #10 there's
- 7:14kind of this mockery that happens of, Oh, yeah, it's just
- 7:20tedious law after law that God has given.
- 7:24And so may we not have that kind of a reaction to God's commands.
- 7:30Instead, may we have like a Psalm 119 reaction of Lord.
- 7:35I can speak for 165 verses about how much I love what you have
- 7:41told me, 'cause it tells me who you are.
- 7:43It tells me who I am. It tells me how I can relate
- 7:46with you, and it tells me how I'm supposed to relate with
- 7:49others in the good times and in the bad times.
- 7:52And so may we love the law of God here.
- 7:56Verse #11 God speaks to the people and it, it is just
- 8:02unintelligible to them. They, they don't understand and
- 8:05they don't want this relationship with God.
- 8:07He'd given them a good land, land of rest and repose, and
- 8:11they would have none of it. Verse #13 The word of Yahweh
- 8:14will come to them. Law after law, law after law,
- 8:18line after line, line after line, a little here, a little
- 8:21there. So they go stumbling backward to
- 8:24be broken, trapped and captured. Their lackadaisical response to
- 8:32the Word of God would results in them being exiled and taken away
- 8:37to Assyria. Verse #14 Therefore hear the
- 8:40word of Yahweh, you scoffers, who rule this people in
- 8:44Jerusalem. So now there's even a connection
- 8:46here to the southern Kingdom of Judah as well, that it's not
- 8:48just Samaria and the northern Kingdom of Israel's capital that
- 8:52is in trouble, but it's Jerusalem, the southern
- 8:54kingdom's capital, that is in trouble as well.
- 8:57Says for you said, we have made a covenant with death and we
- 9:02have an agreement with the grave.
- 9:04When the overwhelming catastrophe passes through,
- 9:06it'll not touch us because we have made falsehood our refuge
- 9:10and have hidden behind treachery.
- 9:12So here they they have made some agreements, some with Syria,
- 9:17some with Egypt. They'd go back on those foreign
- 9:20agreements kind of time and again.
- 9:22There would be treachery and lawlessness.
- 9:25They were not faithful to their word, which obviously is
- 9:28something that even in the 10 commandments you shall not bear
- 9:31false witness is there. And so these people had no
- 9:36respect for even their foreign treaties that they had made.
- 9:40I want to encourage you, if God ever replaces you in a, in a
- 9:43position of leadership within a country, you have any sort of
- 9:48interactions with other foreign nations, honor the treaties that
- 9:52you have made because God views that as important.
- 9:56Verse #16 Therefore Yahweh. Adonai said look, I have laid a
- 10:00stone in Zion, a tested stone. You have turned things around.
- 10:06Oh Nope, I think I skipped one more page.
- 10:09Sorry. Let me read again.
- 10:11Here is being quoted Psalm 116, therefore Yahweh ad.
- 10:16And I said, look, I have laid a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a
- 10:21precious cornerstone, a sure foundation, the one who believes
- 10:26will be unshakeable and I will make justice the measuring line
- 10:30and righteousness, the Masons level that that is everything is
- 10:34being determined by God's justice and his righteousness.
- 10:37Everything is going by this sure cornerstone, who obviously the
- 10:43New Testament tells us over and over again like, hey, this is
- 10:45Jesus. He is the one that everything is
- 10:48supposed to be measured by. It is the He is the perfect law
- 10:53and word of God, the perfect expression of who God is, not
- 10:57just in tablets of stone, but in flesh and blood, living out the
- 11:02truth of what God had said in his Word.
- 11:04That it wasn't just law after law, line after line.
- 11:07It was God's description of His own goodness that then Jesus
- 11:11showed us truly who He is. So those that even pretended to
- 11:16know law after law, line after line, better than anyone else,
- 11:19the Pharisees, they could not recognize the person that the
- 11:25law was describing, even though He was with them in the temple
- 11:31and arguing with them in the synagogues and in the various
- 11:33places. Verse #17 continues Hail will
- 11:38sweep away the false refuge and water will flood your hiding
- 11:41place. So the lies that they had been
- 11:44building up even in their relationships with other
- 11:47nations, God would bring all of that crashing down.
- 11:51Verse #18 Your covenant with death will be dissolved, and
- 11:54your agreement with the grave will not last.
- 11:57When the overwhelming catastrophe passes through, you
- 12:00will be trampled. Every time it passes through, it
- 12:03will carry you away. It'll pass through every
- 12:05morning, every day, and every night.
- 12:07Only terror will cause you to understand the message.
- 12:11Indeed, the bed's too short to stretch out on, and it's cover
- 12:14too small to wrap up in. For Yahweh will rise up, as he
- 12:18did at Mount Perizim. He will rise in wrath as at the
- 12:21valley of Gibeon, to do his work, his unexpected work, and
- 12:25to perform his task, his unfamiliar task.
- 12:29So now, do not scoff, or your shackles will become stronger.
- 12:33Indeed, I have heard from Yahweh.
- 12:35Add an eye of heaven's armies, a decree of destruction for the
- 12:39whole land. Isaiah says there is coming this
- 12:42time and it doesn't matter that you had agreements with Assyria
- 12:47or with well, that was even something that we read back in
- 12:51like Isaiah 6 and six through 9 or so.
- 12:55That Judah had wanted to sign some treaties so that the
- 13:00northern Kingdom of Israel and Aram or modern day Syria to
- 13:05their N so that they wouldn't come and destroy Judah.
- 13:08That Judah had at times allied itself with Assyria.
- 13:11And God says, Nope, this is not going to go well for you.
- 13:14And we'll see that even in a little bit later narrative
- 13:16section in Isaiah where it recounts the time that Assyria
- 13:21came through and laid siege to Jerusalem.
- 13:25Verse #23 is where we are now. Listen and hear my voice.
- 13:32Pay attention and hear what I say.
- 13:35Does the plowman plow every day to plant seed?
- 13:39Let's no. Does he continuously break up
- 13:43and cultivate the soil? No, those are like kind of 1 and
- 13:47done things. Verse 25 When he is leveled its
- 13:50surface, does he not then scatter black cumin?
- 13:53And so cumin He plants wheat and rows and barley and plots with
- 13:58spelt as their border. His God teaches him mortar.
- 14:02He instructs him, certainly black cumin is not threshed with
- 14:06a threshing board and a cartwheel is not rolled over the
- 14:09cumin, but black cumin is beaten out with a stick and cumin with
- 14:13a rod. Bread grain is crushed, but it
- 14:16is not threshed endlessly through the wheel of the
- 14:19farmer's carts rumbles. His horses do not crush it.
- 14:23This also comes from Yahweh of Heaven's armies.
- 14:26He gives wondrous advice. He gives great wisdom.
- 14:29So he, in essence, Isaiah ends this section by saying this.
- 14:34God knows what he's doing and he knows what he's doing with
- 14:38fields. He knows what he's doing with
- 14:40nations. And so for those people that
- 14:43would balk at God's rebuke of their treacherous and lying
- 14:50deals with foreign nations, God says, listen, I know what is
- 14:54best and I know how to even do crops correctly.
- 15:00And I'm the one that has LED humanity to make these
- 15:04discoveries. And so allow me to lead you in a
- 15:07good way that you would experience the good life and
- 15:11right relationship with me and with the rest of humanity.
- 15:15Don't walk according to your own wisdom.
- 15:17Walk according to the wisdom of God today.
- 15:22Thankfully, God has not written down an issuance of, you know,
- 15:29our nation's destruction as of yet.
- 15:33But I think we would do well to encourage our leaders, vote for
- 15:39leaders that will stick by treaties and things that we have
- 15:43made for us and our day-to-day. Be honest in our dealings with
- 15:48businesses, with your spouse, with people you know, friends,
- 15:53or those that you've come to agreements with.
- 15:55Honor those agreements and walk with the Lord.
- 15:58And even from the beginning of the chapter, don't allow
- 16:02drunkenness, a lack of self-control to typify your life
- 16:08that would encourage you even with Ephesians 518.
- 16:11Do not be drunk with wine or controlled by wine, it says, but
- 16:16be filled with the spirit that just as a person who is
- 16:20intoxicated, they're still them. They're still even culpable for
- 16:24their choices, as we would even know in in U.S. law that you
- 16:29can't just be like, oh, well, they were drunk, so it's fine
- 16:31that they were driving. No, you're still culpable for
- 16:34your actions. It's still you, but you are you
- 16:38slightly different? You are you controlled by
- 16:41something else, The impulses that normally you would stuff
- 16:44down, you allow those to take over.
- 16:47And so that's how Paul describes the work of the Holy Spirit,
- 16:53that instead of like spirits, that's the Holy Spirit and he's
- 16:56the one that it's still us. We are the ones taking the
- 17:00actions or saying the words. But instead of being controlled
- 17:05if you will, by a lack of self-control, we are being
- 17:08controlled by the Holy Spirit. So things that we'd be maybe too
- 17:11nervous to say or we would be too selfish to say or to do that
- 17:18we allow the Holy Spirit to, if you will make us drunk in the
- 17:22spirit that we would go. No, I, I am going to be kind
- 17:25because it's not really me. It's the Holy Spirit let you
- 17:28know. Oh, that the, the wine makes me
- 17:30dance good. No, the Holy Spirit is the one
- 17:33that makes me able to be like this.
- 17:36And so I encourage you be filled with the Spirit, walk in
- 17:40relationship with God, a man, be trustworthy, be faithful in your
- 17:44dealings and that would be a good thing in this God who knows
- 17:48how to plant the crops and how to thresh them.
- 17:50He is the one that has given us our instructions for life.
- 17:53His word is good, so treasure it.
- 17:55Don't mock it. Don't just view it as tedious.
- 17:59That's what these groups of people that were supposed to be
- 18:02the people of God did. And so may we not fall into that
- 18:05same trap. Thanks for tuning in.
- 18:07God bless you.
