- 0:01SPEAKER_02: Are you a shelter worker or a part of the cat writing community?
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: The annual conference of the Cat Writers Association is designed for you.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: This episode of the Hissing Feeline gives you the details about the event that takes place November 6th and 7th in the Dallas Fort Worth Airport area.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: Stay here to learn about speakers, workshops, and special events.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Hi, I'm Clark Greer, retired communications professor, full-time cat dad, and host of the Hissing Feeling, a podcast that is about everything cats.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Each week, cat specialists share their expertise in everything from feline health, training and adoption to fostering community cats and kittens.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Now let's get started with today's show.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Thank you for selecting the Hissing Feline podcast as your source for cat information.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: It's my pleasure to have Dusty Rainbow on this week's show.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Dusty is a winning author of fiction and nonfiction books, a cat behavior consultant, and a blogger.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: She is past president of the Cat Writers Association and is the 2026 conference co-chair.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Dusty, thank you for joining me on the podcast to talk about this year's association event that's coming up in November.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: It's just uh right at one month away right now.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: So we're very excited.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Now, for full disclosure, I am also a member of the Cat Riders Association.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: It's uh great to talk to you today about the upcoming conference and all the things that people can expect.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Let's start by talking a bit about the history of the uh CWA.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: We uh came to be in the uh mid-1990s, I think it was 92 or 93, uh in Fort Worth, Texas.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: I was actually at the cat show, but I was not a part of it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: I actually I'd never even written an article about cats.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: So uh it was just kind of odd that here we are years later and and here I am.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: But we are an association of media professionals who write, photograph, draw, create, influence about cats.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: So it's a very broad spectrum.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: We're we're you know, we're we're a big family here.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of different aspects of cat creative production.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: What does the organization hope to do?
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: I think bottom line, we we want to improve the lives of cats through better communication.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: And I mean, that's not exactly what they say, but you know, if you pull away all the uh everything, that's that's the bottom line.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: And so we we want to make sure people get accurate information about cats.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, they learn about products, they are entertained through the the fiction books, they are educated through the nonfiction books, articles, columns.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: So, you know, we're just improving the lives of the cats and their people.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of different aspects to the cats that I've learned by doing this podcast, actually, and reading about it and preparing for interviews with different people, whether they're veterinarians or people who work in some aspect of cat care and cat welfare.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: And uh, cats are really very popular.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, you see them on YouTube and social media and all sorts of places.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: And so cats really have a very special part to play in the lives of humans.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: One thing the organization, I believe, does is it helps people to take their expressions, whether it's artwork or writing or videos or blogging or podcasts, to help people understand more about what cats are all about.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: They're probably one of the most misunderstood pets because let's face it, you know, dogs are underfoot and and dogs want to be uh they want your approval, and they've been bred for what, uh, 15,000 years to be our companions and our best friends.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: However, cats are pretty much the the same animals that wandered up uh from the Nile River to eat the rats at the Egyptian settlements.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: And one thing I like to tell people is without cats, we wouldn't have communities because without agriculture and being able to store food, you can't have accumulations of people.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: So because the the cats were able to help the humans save the crops, we now have cities.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: All on the cats.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: So getting back to your question, uh cats are really misunderstood because for many, many, many, many years, centuries, people thought dogs and cats were the same animal.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: As a matter of fact, I found a 20-volume veterinary set, uh, veterinary manuals, uh uh university manuals, and I looked at the the back of it.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Like I said, I I have no idea how many thousands of pages, but 20 volumes.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: And I looked under cat and there was one listing, and it says, don't use this particular insecticide on cats.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: That was the only difference.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: So people thought dogs and cats were pretty much the same animal, but they're they're very, very different.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Cats are prey and they're predators, uh, so they have a very specific niche, and they're a little harder to understand.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: They didn't evolve to be in a community, so communication within the species was not as important.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: So communication is very subtle, whereas dogs, you know, they wag their tails and they have the eyebrows.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: Cats don't have eyebrows, they don't have that muscle.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: So a lot of the things uh we depend on as humans to determine how a person or dog feels has to do with the um expression of the eyes, and cats don't have that.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: So I think it's really important for our members to be able to share about feline health and feline behavior, and you know what is a natural behavior?
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: How do we best help our cats?
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: Because that also helps us, because if the cats are happy, then hopefully they're not marking and missing the litter box and such.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: There's really a lot to learn.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: It's really a good place for people who are interested in cat writing and uh people who have been longtime cat writers.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: That's pretty much what not only the organization, but we'll talk in a minute about the uh 2026 conference, and that's an opportunity for these people to get together and also to learn from each other.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Well, when I went to my first conference back in, I'm not gonna tell you when it was, let's just say it was before the turn of the millennium.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: But uh when I went to my first one, I'd had two articles published in national magazines about cats.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: I was a local journalist, which you know, woo, that and five bucks will get me Starbucks, but uh it was through my contacts at the cat writers conference that I got a new a new article, and then I'd get another one, and then I'd get another one.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: So it was the contacts.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: And then I realized I needed to learn more about cats, and so it was the experience going to the conference was amazing.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: And you know, you learn about writing, you learn about marketing, you make these amazing contacts, and I just shudder to think what my life would be here, you know, all these decades later, had I not attended that first conference.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: The uh Cat Writers Association is an all-volunteer organization.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: The board, everybody that works with it, that's really important that for an organization that's at least the United States, if not internationally.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: I know we have some international uh members of that.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: And uh so volunteers really do a lot for the organization.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Uh they do everything for the organization.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Uh the the job of president is just uh very detailed because uh the president's responsible for the conference, and then you know, we we have a contest committee, all volunteers, and we have a volunteer who does the social media, everything is all volunteer, the newsletters volunteer.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Um and it's a good place to learn.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: Uh you can write articles for the newsletter and it's published, so you've got that.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: But uh as you do your volunteer work, you're improving your skills and updating your skills.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: So it's it's a win-win, I think.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Who are the cat writers as far as their backgrounds?
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: I'm just amazed at the different types of backgrounds people have.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: You were talking about being a former journalist.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Since you write, you still are working in kind of a journalistic field, but there are a lot of different types of backgrounds people have.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh, yes.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Okay, so we have we have old style journalists.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: Uh we we don't wear the fedoras anymore, the put the press passes and the the hat bands, but you know, we're we're the old generation of that.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Then we have novelists, we have people who write the health and behavior.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh if you want a good book on a cat, uh our members are the best.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: If they are knowledgeable and well trained, and then we've got influencers, we've got the the social people doing social media, we have artists, we have some of the best cat photographers in the world.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: It is involved in communicating about cats.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: And I guess I could join in on that too.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: My background is education.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that reminds me, I left out a whole segment.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Uh in people involved in marketing, uh, you know, because they're writing about cats.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: And it's a great way for people to get involved, no matter their background.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: It it doesn't necessarily have to be somebody who has specific for a career done things with cats.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: There are people that do that.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: And uh, but at the same time, it could be somebody that has had a different profession but is really connected with cats, and they want to do things uh to benefit uh cats, maybe in their area, and and so CWA allows that to happen.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, and I did leave out a huge segment uh uh uh rescuers, because rescuers do write about cats, they write profiles, they do newsletter articles, uh, they create um procedures manuals.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: So we don't want to leave them out because a lot of our members who are in other areas also do that, and we want to save the cats.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: I think everybody that's part of the CWA is uh really focused on the same type of thing and just doing it in different types of ways with different types of tactics given their backgrounds.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Let's talk a bit about this year's conference, and uh, I know one of the things that people are interested in is what can they expect?
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: The title of this year's conference, and it relates to where the conference is going to be held, but it's called Meow Y'all Saddle Up for the Future of Pet Media.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: That is that's a great and if you go to the website of the CWA, the Cat Riders Association, you'll see a nice little graphic of a cat riding a horse.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: So there we are.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: So there's a so the inspiration, where did the the inspiration for the um for the title of this year's conference come from?
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: Well, it is in Fort Worth, which is uh the the nickname of Fort Worth, Texas, is Cowtown.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: And uh, hey, it is Texas, so we say y'all.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, cats say meow, and and our cats uh representing the conference say meow, y'all.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: And I I think it's cute and funny, but the the important thing is welcome to the future of pet media.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: And that's a very important word, pet media.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: That we are not uh, even though we're the cat riders, our conferences are pet related.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, the same, with the exception of a few talks that are specifically about cats.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: The same theories and ideas and lessons can uh can apply to dogs and and gerbils and horses and and rescue cows and you know, so just because you don't write about cats doesn't mean that you won't get a lot out of the conference.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about the location in uh specifically.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: It's going to be in the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport area.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Obviously, if they want more information about that or want to register for that, they can go to the Cat Writers Association website.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: There's a nice banner at the top, and you just click on that and it gives you all the details on the following pages.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: And it's going to be November 6 and 7 of 2026.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: That is correct.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: And you're right.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: The MetroClix, if you say DFW or even Dallas or Fort Worth, that that's generic.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: It means the MetroClex.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: This is actually DFW South, which is the airport.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: So if you fly in, you get a complimentary ride to the uh hotel.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: It's basically between Dallas and Fort Worth.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Who should attend the conference?
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Anyone who's interested in writing about cats or producing content about cats or other pets.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Like I said, we are partnering uh with dog writers.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: They're one of our sponsors.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, uh we're very inclusive when it comes to this.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, as species go, we're very inclusive and we want to include everybody because let's face it, we do want people to relay good information about dogs and horses and such.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, they the same thing would uh apply to uh the fiction as well.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: The conference itself has two tracks that really have specific audiences that they're built for.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Would you explain the two tracks?
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: Okay, we have the writers and content creator track that that has about marketing and social media and and uh working with editors and and things associated with producing a product, a media product.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: And then we're having a second track, it's a rescue communication workshop.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: It's two days.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: We are creating this specifically uh for the benefit of small shelters and rescue groups.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: I'm a rescuer, I've been doing that for many decades, and uh we are taught how to take care of the animals, you know.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: We're we're taught procedures and everything for you know the health and this and that, but we're not taught how to communicate about them, we're not taught how to write good profiles or descriptions for the online, we're not taught how to write catchy cage cards because if you're in a shelter and you're walking past a kennel or a cage, you have fewer than two seconds to get the attention of that person.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: And if the cage card says fluffy, seven-year-old black cat, those people are gonna keep walking.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: What can you say on those cage cards to get them to stop and look at that pet in the eye?
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: We're gonna do a photography workshop where people can take their cell phones and using different techniques that you can do, you know, not having to buy any equipment or anything, different techniques that will make that cat come out.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: You can see the eyes, you can see the black fur, bring the personality of the pet out because that's what's going to draw people, that's what's gonna cause people to want to adopt, get that second look, fall in love.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: We're hoping to have somebody talk about procedures manuals and and what would be involved in that because you know, we do want our fosters and our adopters to understand what they need to do when they bring the animal home.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: One of our uh sponsors, Alley Cat Rescue, is going to be providing a speaker talking about the difference between stray and feral.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: And people don't understand, they use the two terms synonymously, and they are absolutely not synonyms.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: A stray cat may appear feral, but stray cats were once owned, and feral cats were generally born wild.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: Just two days of of good information.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Even a poetry workshop.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: So somebody who writes poetry that that might be a real inspirational uh workshop for them to attend.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: And you think about it, uh, you know, what it takes to write good poetry, that can help you.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Learning how to finesse the words will help you in your fiction and even your non-fiction.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's helping you sculpt what you're trying to say.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: So even if you're not into to uh poetry, it's a good option.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: And there are some special things taking place, one of which is a screening of the Cat Video Fest.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, my wife and I attended a local screening of that back in August when it was around the country.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: We really enjoyed it.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: So if you didn't need the opportunity to see the work put on by uh Will Braden.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: It would, and and uh I fell in love with Will's work when he did Henri, the existential cat.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: I think it was the existential cat.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: And uh Henri was uh a black cat and he's speaking with a French accent and he's talking about the fool because there's a younger cat that's just annoying the heck out of him, and it's so, so funny.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: So, yes, that's that's gonna be something to look forward to.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: That's gonna be part of our Friday fun night, and so we're just gonna get together and we've got a um a cash bar and you you can drink or whatever, and uh we'll have finger foods so you can do whatever the activities are, and we're gonna have games and and drawings and and just have a good time and get to know each other.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: And we will have our celebrity uh safety cat uh Casey.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: He teaches cat first aid, he will be there.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have selfie stations and he will be stationed at uh I think the selfie station with the barn, because meow y'all, you know.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: And so if you want to get your picture taken with safety cat Casey.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, and that's another thing.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna be having an introduction to Cat First Aid conducted by um Casey's employee, Arden Moore.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: That's a good term.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: That's kind of what we are to our cats, are we?
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: We're their staff.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: Yes, uh his staff member, yeah, Arden Moore.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Let's talk now about where they can get more information.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: And I mentioned it a while ago, but let's let's talk about that so they can go to the website at the Cat Riders Association, and uh that will give them all the information on that.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: And then there's also opportunities to connect and follow the CWA through social media.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Uh you can go to uh catwriters.com and uh there's a slider as you enter the website, and uh the first and second slides that you see, just click on those uh are about the conference.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, uh something I didn't tell you about the uh the rescue track.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: The rescue track uh is only$47 for the two-day event if you use the term all caps rescue.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: So that's your code word.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: And uh we're doing that because we want the rescuers to come in and learn because save lives through better communication.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: The event has some really nice sponsors that have helped the Cat Writers Association with this event.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: Are there still opportunities for sponsors?
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: We still have time to get you in and and do publicity for you.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: And that's our that we're really focusing this year on the benefits to the sponsors.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: That's what Friday Fun Night is all about because uh we're gonna have to have the people come in and and visit with the sponsors in order to get tickets for drawings.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: So, yes, well, we would love to talk to you.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: And if it's too late in your financial or your fiscal year, then uh consider us for next year and we'll have a lot of opportunities.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: Let's uh wrap our uh session today by once again repeating the registration and location information.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: And that we haven't talked about costs.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: What is the cost now if somebody's interested in doing the uh entire uh two days?
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Okay, if you are going to the full conference, which includes uh lunch uh on Friday, lunch and dinner on Friday, and lunch on Saturday, it's uh 250 for non-members and 200 for uh Cat Riders members.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: If you want to do the rescue track alone, it's$75.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: But if you use the the code Rescue All Caps, then it's only$47 for the whole two days, no meal.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: If uh somebody wants more details, the website is a great place to look.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: It has all the details on speakers and workshops and what's happening and costs, and that's probably the best place for people.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: I would I yes uh so go go to catwriters.com and like I said, the easiest thing to do is look at the slider and wait until the the thing about the rescue track or the the full conference comes up and and there should be plenty of information.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: We also have a public uh cat riders page on Facebook.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Uh so whether you're a shelter worker or you like to write about cats or pets in general, the conference will feature topics that are specially tailored for you if you want to want to do that.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: My guest on this edition of the Hissing Feline podcast has been Dusty Rainbowt, an author, cat behavior consultant, blogger, past president of the Cat Writers Association, and co-chair of the 2026 CWA conference.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: That is coming up November 6 and 7 in the Dallas Fort Worth Airport area.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Again, go to the website of CatWriters.com for more details.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Dusty, thank you for giving us a preview of this year's conference.

- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Tales about the joys and quirks of cat ownership.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Our cat Sadie had a great memory when it came to treats, even though she was considered a super senior.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Her internal clock never let her forget when it was treat time.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: My husband and I would be relaxing and watching TV in the evening.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: At around 7 or 7:30, without fail, Sadie would hop down from her perch on the couch, saunter toward the kitchen, and disappear around the corner.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: After a few seconds, if we didn't follow her, she would peek around the corner to see if we were coming, then turn back into the kitchen.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Another few seconds would pass, and she would come back out of the kitchen, stand there, and stare at us to see if we were going to come and give her her evening treats.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Her persistence eventually paid off after a couple of times doing this, and my husband would get up and accommodate her with her favorite treat.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: There is certainly no question as to who ran our household.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: You've been listening to Inspirational Cat Stories, a weekly feature of the Hissing Feline podcast.
