Latest / The Extra Point / Coaching Carousel Report Card: Grading Every Power 4 Hire
Transcript
- 0:00What's up y'all? You're listening to the extra
- 0:02point college football podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnes,
- 0:06joined as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:08Daniel, we have or deep into the offseason at this point where
- 0:12the good news is we're only a few weeks away from spring ball.
- 0:15But today we're going to recap the coaching carousel.
- 0:18I think, I think things have finally settled down.
- 0:20I don't think we're getting to get anymore firings or hirings
- 0:24after this point. So we're going to grade every
- 0:26power for coaching change, starting with the SEC, which had
- 0:31the most openings this offseason, or go into the Big 10
- 0:34and then the ACC in the Big 12. After that, all the power for
- 0:38coaching changes, we'll put a letter grade on all of them.
- 0:41And Daniel, I want to start with, I think this my default
- 0:44answer is just I'm going to steal time for it's AC plus and
- 0:47I hope it works out or he says, yeah, I think it's a great hire.
- 0:51I have no idea if it will work out.
- 0:52I feel like it's how all these coaching changes are.
- 0:54I think it's fair, especially if you don't know much about the
- 0:57guy or, you know, it doesn't seem, you know, there's a couple
- 1:01of them that that's how I feel. It's like, you know, I'm not mad
- 1:03at them for making this decision, but I have no idea.
- 1:07There's no science to this. So this is our opinion and
- 1:10people love to put letter grades on stuff.
- 1:11So we're this is this is what we think of the hires given the
- 1:14information we have. But again, if there if there is
- 1:16a science to this, a lot more schools would nail coaching
- 1:19changes and we wouldn't have as many every offseason.
- 1:22Some people call me a science deniers, so there's that.
- 1:26We'll see. See how deep we get in this?
- 1:30All right, Daniel, SEC, we got to start with LSULSU hires Lane
- 1:35Kiffin. He was definitely the hottest
- 1:37name on on every big jobs board this offseason or this football
- 1:43season since it was in season when, when whenever he took that
- 1:46job. But for LSU, Lane Kiffin, what
- 1:49grade are you giving to LSU? Yeah, this one to me, I mean, I
- 1:54it, it's an A like you can't, you know, I mean, if we're doing
- 1:58pluses, I like an A+ on this one.
- 2:01I think this is as good as it gets.
- 2:03This is where, you know, elite coach meets elite opportunity
- 2:07and I just, you know, I can't get over it.
- 2:09It's one of those where it is a no win situation as far as how
- 2:12the news was going to break and how, you know, unfortunate it
- 2:16was that it had to be him giving up the opportunity to go, you
- 2:21know, be a coach in the playoff and all of that.
- 2:23But like you don't do that for anything less than the job being
- 2:28an A+ and the coach being an A+. So hand in a glove, it's easy
- 2:33for me. I think he's going to.
- 2:35I think he's going to. He's excelled everywhere he's
- 2:37been really since he got really learned his lessons and stuff
- 2:40along the way. I think ending at USC after that
- 2:44point, he's just been constantly rising.
- 2:46So yeah, I don't, I think he's ready and I think this is this
- 2:51is pre one of the premier coaches and he's finally at a
- 2:53premier destination. Yeah, this isn't A plus for me.
- 2:57This is a home run. This is the best name on the
- 2:59board. I think all the theatrics aside,
- 3:03he was the best name on the board.
- 3:05As far as the head coach that could go somewhere else to a big
- 3:08job, it was Lane Kiffin. Daniel.
- 3:10When was the last time trivia question, when was the last time
- 3:14Ole Miss had back-to-back to back double digit win seasons?
- 3:18Never. Never.
- 3:21And I think that got lost in all of this is, hey, Lane Kiffin had
- 3:26back-to-back to back double digit win seasons at Ole Miss.
- 3:28That's never been done. And I think the theatrics of the
- 3:31end of it and the drama at the end of it kind of tainted that
- 3:35of Lynn Kiffins. This bad guy.
- 3:37He's a damn good football coach. I'll tell you that much.
- 3:39And I know Ole Miss is, you know, we'll, we'll talk Ole Miss
- 3:42next and they got their guy, but he is he's an A plus.
- 3:46I agree with you. I think that's what if you're,
- 3:49if you're LSU, you couldn't have hoped for better than hiring the
- 3:53coach who just did the best he's ever done at an SEC program,
- 3:56like the best they've ever done. He reached their ceiling as far
- 4:00as Ole Miss and now you get to take him from an from a rival
- 4:05and plant him in a job that now the expectations are through the
- 4:08roof. So now you now the whole like,
- 4:10can Kiffin win the title? Valid because there's no reason
- 4:13you shouldn't be able to at LSU other than, you know, other
- 4:15teams are trying to do that too. So easier said than done, but a
- 4:18plus for me for Kiffin. So I I agree with you there.
- 4:21We'll go to Ole Miss where Lane Kiffin left, they promote their
- 4:26defensive coordinator and Pete Golding and Pete Golding coaches
- 4:30the playoff wins a couple of games.
- 4:32They get to a semi final under Pete Golding.
- 4:34I think that that realm was special for Ole Miss fans to to
- 4:38have Golden kind of turned down that I'm not going to get LSU
- 4:40with you and I'm going to stay here and the defensive staff is
- 4:43going to stay here. Now that we're now that we're
- 4:45through all that. Daniel, what do you give Pete?
- 4:47Ole Miss is hiring of Pete Golding.
- 4:49Yeah, interesting when you get a higher and then you actually
- 4:51have some tape to to grind and look at him.
- 4:54He's a first time head coach, but not anymore now that we've
- 4:57seen him a couple times. And it's funny, if you would
- 4:59have asked me right after the higher versus right now, I think
- 5:01my grade is different. Which is it fair?
- 5:04Is it not? You know, whatever we get the
- 5:06opportunity to do this. So it's really a cool, you know,
- 5:09story because it didn't realize that he had grown up being like
- 5:12a Mississippi guy and all of that kind of stuff.
- 5:14I just obviously knew basically when he entered my, you know,
- 5:19lexicon of SEC knowledge, he was Alabama's defensive coordinator.
- 5:23And then basically he took a walk with Saban down the hallway
- 5:27and Saban promoted him to rival. He said, hey, you need to go
- 5:31take any job you can get before I because I I will be firing you
- 5:36if that's not the case. And so anyways, he takes the Ole
- 5:39Miss job. It kind of seems like, you know,
- 5:41he got a pay rate, the pay raise to go over there.
- 5:45And then the way Elaine Kiffin, you know, running guns it, you
- 5:48know, defense is always kind of the afterthought.
- 5:50So it's like the defense has not been necessarily this success
- 5:54story at Ole Miss. They've had some good defenses
- 5:57and some better than average at times, but this year was not
- 6:00particularly special. So the fact that they were
- 6:02promoted, it wasn't like this slam dunk initially for me.
- 6:06I was, but I will say they made, if I could have in the moment,
- 6:11just given a plus to the administration for making a
- 6:14decision so quickly. I think sometimes decisiveness
- 6:18is better than, you know, making sure you've got the right guy in
- 6:22some cases and that that's in. They were like, this is
- 6:25happening. We're going to we're going to
- 6:26promote him. We're not going to lose him.
- 6:29He's qualified. We're going to bring him in and
- 6:31he's going to be our guy. And the fact that they acted so
- 6:33swiftly, I think preserved their season, gave them a fighting
- 6:37chance. And you know, after hindsight
- 6:41more than a fighting chance and they I think they ended up on
- 6:45the right side of this. So my long winded answer of
- 6:48saying my grade is AB plus he was going to be AC plus for me
- 6:54prior to it was going to be AC plus based on just the higher
- 7:01mitigating a disaster. A plus for the administration
- 7:04for making a quick decision, but it's already paid off for them.
- 7:07And they had two wins in the the playoff 1A big upset win against
- 7:13Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. So yeah, I think that there's
- 7:17some instilled confidence in that.
- 7:19So B plus for me, for Pete Goulding.
- 7:22B Plus I'm going B for Pete Goulding.
- 7:25I was like, I'm not going to be prisoner of the moment of the
- 7:27playoff run because again, this is this is the only unique
- 7:29situation on the list. Or they took over and we got to
- 7:32see coaching in the postseason from the new hire, right?
- 7:35Which makes this one interesting.
- 7:37But it's AB for me, Daniel. I'm looking down my list at all
- 7:40my letter grades and spoiler, I don't think I gave ABI, don't
- 7:45think I gave anything higher than AB or AB plus to any
- 7:48coordinator that got promoted to a head coach or got a job as a
- 7:51head coach. Which is interesting because if
- 7:53you think about the best head coaches in the sport right now,
- 7:58Kirby Smart went from coordinator to this is his first
- 8:01day coaching job. Ryan Day, this is his first head
- 8:03coaching job. Dan Landing his first head
- 8:06coaching job. Those are three at the top of my
- 8:08head. Sig Nettie's not, but I gave
- 8:10some as to head coaches that move from job to job.
- 8:13But some of the best head coach in the sport right now were
- 8:16coordinators and this is their first head coaching job.
- 8:18So maybe I'll be proven wrong here.
- 8:20But yeah, B for me, for Pete Golding, yes, I know we've seen
- 8:24him as a head coach technically, but we got to see a full season
- 8:29because it's not just how do you handle, you know, coaching on
- 8:32game day. You really probably get what, 4
- 8:35to 5 decisions a game where you make that big of an impact on
- 8:38game day. We got to see a full season of
- 8:40Pete Golden before. I'm just like, the playoff was a
- 8:42success. Therefore it's an A.
- 8:43I'm cautious because he hasn't done it.
- 8:46So I'm going to give him AB. He's been around some premier
- 8:48programs like you talked about. I give the administration an A,
- 8:51like you said, for making a hire quickly.
- 8:53I thought that was a really good point by you and really good on
- 8:56all Miss so and with all of these, Daniel, it's AB and I
- 8:58hope it works out. You know, I'm like, I'm rooting
- 9:01for all of them, but I hope it works out.
- 9:04Daniel, let's move to I think the next hottest job in the SEC
- 9:07that opened Florida. And you know, the, when Florida
- 9:11opened, it was, OK, here's Kiffin to Florida.
- 9:15You know, he wears the visor because of Spurrier.
- 9:18He loves talking trash because of Spurrier.
- 9:21This is, I mean, at the, at the at the minimum, it's a top ten
- 9:24job at the sport. You could argue top five job in
- 9:27the sport. And I myself would argue it's a
- 9:29top five job in the sport. And it's like, OK, this is
- 9:32Kiffin. He has to go be rival to Kirby
- 9:35Smart. You know, 2 buddies who talk
- 9:37trash to each other in Group chats and worked for Sabin.
- 9:40And I'm like, this is fun. And that was all prior to LSU
- 9:43opening up, they hire John Sumrall.
- 9:45I'll save my thoughts on this. Daniel, what's what is your
- 9:48grade on Florida? Florida's hiring John Sumrall.
- 9:52Yeah. I think, you know, people can
- 9:54argue experienced head coach and things like that with a couple
- 9:57of these guys that we've we're going to have coming up of like
- 10:00they went from, you know, a smaller school here.
- 10:04I mean, he was at, of course, Troy in the Tulane and he comes
- 10:07here, He has his SCC experiences like a position coach with
- 10:11Kentucky and Ole Miss. All that be said, I mean, it was
- 10:16a he's a fast riser. He's, you know, a defensive guy.
- 10:20So it's funny because I feel like any successful Florida head
- 10:25coach has always been an offensive guy.
- 10:28Obviously Spurrier, Urban Meyer, you know, and most recently
- 10:33their most successful recent one is Dan Mullen and he was an
- 10:37offensive guy. So, you know, I, I the, you
- 10:40know, they had the year with Will Muschamp where he was great
- 10:43and then things weren't great. Yeah.
- 10:46So I I don't, I hate to put it all in the box of like he's a,
- 10:51you know, branded as a defensive guy.
- 10:53I don't know how it's going to go.
- 10:55Don't think it's a bad hire. They big Boyd Auburn for him.
- 10:58So it was, you know, LSU took, you know, Kiffin from Florida,
- 11:03Ole Miss, but Florida was hoping to get him.
- 11:06LSU said no, he's ours. Florida, of course, to John
- 11:09Summerall from Auburn. We thought that was going to
- 11:10happen. So, you know, it feels like they
- 11:13stole their guy. But it's a wait and see.
- 11:17It's definitely I'm so I'm going, I'm going, I'm going C
- 11:21plus and we're going to wait and see.
- 11:23I don't think it's a bad hire, but yeah, it's you're not going
- 11:26to a situation that you can just, you know, Turner, you play
- 11:29Georgia every single year and you know, you're going to be
- 11:32swimming in deep waters right away.
- 11:34So there's no, there's less. I feel like if you come as a
- 11:38coordinator to a head coach, you have a little bit more of a
- 11:41leash. But when you come as a head
- 11:43coach to a head coach, there's like a we kind of expect to win
- 11:46right away. And Florida's very impatient.
- 11:50So I could see, we'll see. But I'm C plus for John Sumrall
- 11:54for me. What say you?
- 11:55I went AI went A and it's funny because I gave Lane Kiffin an A+
- 12:00and you know, if somebody's in a baseball tournament, I would
- 12:02have said home run this one. I'm calling a double because you
- 12:06missed out on the Kiffin, which was, I mean, they were very open
- 12:08and that was the number one target.
- 12:10But then when they kind of realized it wasn't going to be
- 12:11them, they they quickly moved on.
- 12:13And we said on this podcast, Daniel, I said, Hey, Florida,
- 12:17don't not think the room here. I'm like, I'm like,
- 12:20unfortunately, the people that make these decisions are often
- 12:23illogical. And the illogical thought would
- 12:25have been, well, we just hired the G5 coach from Louisiana.
- 12:30So we can't do that again because it won't work.
- 12:32I'm like focus on who's the best coach you can hire.
- 12:36And I really do think John Summerall was the best head
- 12:38coach you could hire. Like you mentioned, he was a
- 12:39very fast rising star. When he was at Troy, people
- 12:42around the SEC were saying this guy will be an SEC head coach.
- 12:46He's at he he won double digit games and three out of his Four
- 12:48Seasons as a head coach so far. Of course, last year early in
- 12:52the season when Ole Miss played Tulane the first time, Lane
- 12:54Kiffin said this guy will be a head coach in the SEC next year.
- 12:58And people were like at Ole Miss because are you going to be
- 13:02gone? And he lays the Florida job.
- 13:03So I, I, I'm giving a lot of credit to Florida for not doing
- 13:07the stupid thing and saying we're not going to hire the G5
- 13:11coach from Louisiana. Because I do think he was one of
- 13:13the best candidates on the board.
- 13:16I mean, to me, if you're, when we did our big board, he was #2
- 13:19behind Lee Kiffin for me for Florida.
- 13:21And therefore I think it was a no brainer decision.
- 13:23And I'm, I'm giving him an, a Daniel.
- 13:25I I think he's a really good football coach.
- 13:27Again, you know, if you think about the stereotypical SEC
- 13:30coach, like he checks all those boxes as far as he's from the
- 13:34South and was a good recruiter and as coached at multiple SEC
- 13:38schools and you know, it wasn't he a GA Kentucky too?
- 13:41He was like where he started. That's where he started, yeah.
- 13:44So and then like when he wasn't playing in the SEC's with Troy
- 13:47and Alabama and Tula in Louisiana.
- 13:50So still all those high school ties as a head coach and checks
- 13:54a lot of boxes of like that stereotypical SEC coach, which I
- 13:57think is a good thing. And I think it is a I see he's
- 14:01quieter than building the appear as far as like he's not going to
- 14:04have these zingers. I think he just loves football.
- 14:06And I think if you're Florida, you probably want that right
- 14:09now. You don't want any of the
- 14:09branding stuff. You don't want, you know,
- 14:12whatever money don't broke money don't spend.
- 14:14I don't know, money scare you guys.
- 14:15Everybody don't make money. I'm like what you just want like
- 14:19AI mean again, if you're Florida, what what's the
- 14:21standard? It's you want Kirby Smart if
- 14:23you're Florida. So maybe they hope they're
- 14:25getting that in John some role. I'm giving Florida an A for that
- 14:28coaching hire Auburn. You know, with with Florida and
- 14:32LSU open, I didn't think there was a chance link album was
- 14:34going to get Lane Kiffin. They should have hired him two
- 14:37years ago when they hired Hugh Freeze or three years ago,
- 14:39whenever it was when they had the chance.
- 14:41They fire Hugh Freeze, hire Alex Golish.
- 14:45What do you give this hire, Daniel?
- 14:48Some people are saying he's a member of the KGB, born in
- 14:51Moscow, of course. Some some are saying.
- 14:54I've read some message boards. People are concerned.
- 14:58Yeah, he's definitely moved here from the Soviet Union at one
- 15:01point. So it is what it is.
- 15:03But yeah, he is he a spy? We don't know.
- 15:06He's not been convicted of espionage to my knowledge.
- 15:09He also didn't coach at Western Michigan with What's his name
- 15:15from? Gosh, Connor.
- 15:19Stallions, thank you. Thank you to myself.
- 15:23Yeah. He, he is not the typical, you
- 15:27know, took the SEC route similar to what John Summerall did, like
- 15:30you're mentioning. He's, you know, very much a
- 15:32Midwestern guy. Ohio State, you know, Toledo,
- 15:36IL, that's in his background. Iowa State.
- 15:40And then he ends up at UCF and then comes up basically on the
- 15:46scene at Tennessee as their offensive coordinator.
- 15:49And that's his only tie so far to the SEC goes down.
- 15:52And he's got some experience now at South Florida, but I feel
- 15:55like it's it's a little bit of a mixed bag.
- 15:58He got a lot of credit this past year for what happened there.
- 16:01He beat up on some SEC teams, which was impressive and then
- 16:05lands this Auburn job. He's got some guys transferring
- 16:08to Auburn. I'm I like I feel like I like
- 16:13the hire in the context of what they've had to go through
- 16:17recently. I just don't know if it's going
- 16:19to be like they had the fire hue freeze.
- 16:22But I just don't know if it's going to be an improvement.
- 16:24And that's what worries me. So I I'm sticking with AC plus
- 16:28I'll go see because I'll, I'll differentiate from John
- 16:30Summerall. John Summerall's something that
- 16:34I think is an improvement from Billy Napier.
- 16:37I'll say see, because I don't know.
- 16:39He could be a star. I don't know.
- 16:41I don't know that they got better.
- 16:43So give me AC for Alex Golesh. What do you say, Jacob?
- 16:46I'm I'm going to go with you. I put B to C, another fast riser
- 16:51again like it's it's hard for him.
- 16:54He needed to go to USF because when when you're with someone
- 16:57like Hypo, who it's like, oh, it's Hypo's offense.
- 17:00It's almost like being Kirby Schmartz defensive coordinator,
- 17:03although two of those have become head coaches immediately.
- 17:06So maybe not. But you know, Charlie Weis,
- 17:08junior at Ole Miss and LSU, like whoever sharks off at the
- 17:13coordinator is, he calls plays. You know, whoever Lincoln
- 17:16rallies off at the coordinator is, I don't know.
- 17:18It's like when you're with those.
- 17:19Coaches. Same thing with and.
- 17:23When you're when you're with those coaches, it's like, OK,
- 17:26well, whose offense is it? Because you know, obviously this
- 17:29is the hypo offense. So good for him on getting the
- 17:32USF job and like, Hey, it's a major media market.
- 17:36You you know, you're probably one win from the playoff this
- 17:39past year where you would they would have gone to the American
- 17:43Conference championship and one I mean, look, as a head coach,
- 17:46he's 23 and 15. Yes, he has SEC experience.
- 17:51I'm going C you know, I put B at 1st and I was like, I think I'm
- 17:54leaning CI think it's just if you're Auburn is a single and I
- 17:57love what you said. I almost did this for all of
- 17:59them of did you upgrade? And I'm really not sure if you
- 18:03upgraded if you're Auburn. I just don't know.
- 18:06I don't know. And I'm with you had to you had
- 18:09to fire if you freeze. But as with any coach, every
- 18:13coaching change is a risk. And LSUI feel pretty confident
- 18:17they upgraded from Brian Kelly to Lane Kiffin.
- 18:20And I'm saying that, saying that, and I know I I was I was
- 18:23very adamant that I thought Brian Kelly would work at LSU
- 18:27and he just didn't Ole Miss. I don't know if they again, I
- 18:31gave him AB, but I don't you know, I mean, I think they
- 18:34downgraded from lane Kevin to be Goulding.
- 18:36I'm. Yeah.
- 18:38And again. But yeah, that head coach didn't
- 18:39get fired. He left for a better job.
- 18:41Right, it's a different situation.
- 18:44Auburn, Yeah. I just, I don't know if you
- 18:46upgraded from Hugh Freeze and you had to fire him.
- 18:49I agree. Don't know if it's upgrade.
- 18:52I think it's really good point from you.
- 18:53So I'm with you on the C I'm right there with you, You and I
- 18:56same thinking there all. Right.
- 18:59I feel better now because Florida, we were so far apart.
- 19:02At least we're. Close.
- 19:02Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:03So that's OK. You know, we got to have some
- 19:06disagreement, all right, Daniel. Arkansas, right.
- 19:10You know, they fire Sam Pitman. Great start for Sam Pitman.
- 19:14Culture fit. Only job he wanted.
- 19:16It just didn't work. They hire Ryan Silverfield, the
- 19:21Memphis head coach. What letter grade do you give
- 19:24Arkansas? Yeah.
- 19:26Is the saying is it DS get degrees like you're still
- 19:29passing if you get AD This one very much so.
- 19:33I did use that lens to a certain extent.
- 19:36If you fired your head coach and you hired another coach, did you
- 19:40improve? I don't think that they did.
- 19:43I think it's also a was there meat left on the bone?
- 19:48Like could you have either extended another year with your
- 19:51guy? Was it absolutely necessary that
- 19:53you fired and or is your job better than what you settled
- 19:58for? Could you have hired somebody
- 20:00better? Because some people like Auburn
- 20:03and Florida, I think to a certain extent they're the
- 20:06programs are good, but like in the context of everything, they
- 20:10hired the best possible guy they could get.
- 20:12It just is what it is. To a certain extent.
- 20:15Arkansas Ryan Silverfield, I think if you hired him last
- 20:19year, would have been a really good hire this year.
- 20:24Obviously, Memphis beats Arkansas, so maybe that was in
- 20:27the minds of the administration and the search committee or
- 20:30whoever made the decision. But Memphis was like happy to
- 20:33have him go, you know, he's he's from the, you know, he's one of
- 20:38these Memphis coaches. That's not he's one of the few
- 20:41Memphis coaches that I feel like is not trending upwards in his
- 20:46next his next role. You know, Mike Norville, it was
- 20:49his right hand man, his offensive coordinator at the
- 20:53time. He's offensive line coach.
- 20:54There was talk about him trying to bring him to floor state with
- 20:56him and he's like, no, we're going to stay at Memphis.
- 20:59He's been OK there anyways. I think Arkansas did them a
- 21:02solid by taking him off their hands and I would give this one
- 21:06Adi think they downgraded they could have done better.
- 21:11Maybe they couldn't have his. It's a tough sell to be the
- 21:14bottom half of the SEC every year.
- 21:16But you got SEC money and he just gave a promotion to a guy
- 21:20that was probably going to get fired if he gave gave him
- 21:22another year. So it's AD for me with Arkansas.
- 21:25What about you, Jacob? Are we allowed to give an?
- 21:30FI think so. I just felt harsh giving the
- 21:31first F. Are you giving an F?
- 21:34So I'll go deal with you. OK.
- 21:36I'm also at AD Here's what here's what else is factoring
- 21:39into this because you, you made a good point.
- 21:41I pulled up some quotes from Hunter.
- 21:42Your your check their athletic director.
- 21:45He said our head coach compensation, our assistant
- 21:48coach salary pool, our support staff salary pool and our
- 21:51overall operating budget ranks towards the bottom of the SECI.
- 21:55Think with that information, Coach Pittman did not have the
- 21:57resources he needed to appropriately compete in this
- 22:01conference right now. And they said that at the offset
- 22:05of firing him and on the inside of like, hey, we're going to
- 22:07increase that with the new head coach coming in.
- 22:09Like we we know we were at fault there.
- 22:11I don't know that they upgraded from Sam Pittman.
- 22:13They're spending way more in basketball than they are in
- 22:15football. And that's a decision you have
- 22:16to make. And that's fine if that's where
- 22:18you want to live. But I'm with you on that.
- 22:21His numbers at Memphis are not impressive of these G5 coaches.
- 22:24They got hired. His name, Daniel.
- 22:26I did not know who he was until he made some comments in the
- 22:29middle of the season last year about another head coach.
- 22:32Yeah, he was not remotely on my radar.
- 22:34And I think here's where I'm leading.
- 22:36F and I'll go D still. But is you're an SEC job.
- 22:40And the head coach that you wanted and that I thought was
- 22:43the best fit went to Oklahoma State, which we're gonna go
- 22:46there like you at Oklahoma State, go and get a coach that
- 22:51you could have gotten. Virginia Tech got a coach that
- 22:53you could have gotten. So it kind of tells you where
- 22:55Arkansas is right now as far as a job goes.
- 22:58But still don't love the hire. And this is the one that if if I
- 23:01had to look at these questions later, but if I had to bet on
- 23:04one that I think won't work out that I'm most confident in given
- 23:07the whole situation to Daniel because I also think Arkansas is
- 23:10a hard place to win. But if Ryan Silverfield was
- 23:13going, you know, and he had two double digit win seasons, but
- 23:176-8 and three six and 6-7 and 6:10 and 3:11 and 2:00 eight and
- 23:21four at Memphis, Like what are his best years at Arkansas gonna
- 23:24be? I just I wonder that.
- 23:26So I'm going to be with you. I think that's a that's a tough
- 23:29place to win. It's a tough job.
- 23:31I'm going D let's go to Kentucky.
- 23:35I mean, how crazy is it, Daniel, that what we're three years
- 23:39removed from, you know, we had Shiano Sunday.
- 23:41I don't know what you call Mark Stoops Saturday or whatever day
- 23:44it was, but Mark Stoops is going to take the Texas A&M job and
- 23:48the fans revolt and there's a mutiny and now he's no longer
- 23:52going to take the Texas A&M job and then now he's fired from
- 23:55Kentucky. Daniel, he people said he had
- 23:57the best job in the SEC. He gets a contract extension
- 24:00every time he wins seven games, which again, hats off to
- 24:02Kentucky for realizing their place in the SEC.
- 24:05He was a beacon of consistency. I still question firing him
- 24:09because I just don't know what you want if you're Kentucky, but
- 24:11they hire Will Stein. What do you give this, you know,
- 24:14beyond the firing, what do you give this grade to Kentucky for
- 24:17hiring Will Stein? Yeah, I it's one of these things
- 24:20of it's tough to say that you improved when you fire the best
- 24:27coach in Kentucky history. I don't know, Bear Bryant was
- 24:29their coach at one point. Mike Mitch was their coach at
- 24:32one point. Those are better coaches.
- 24:34But like in Kentucky history, you know, Stoops was very, you
- 24:38know, very good. And I think, you know, he had a
- 24:41couple of those years really pre COVID, he was a lot of, you
- 24:46know, that was 1718 and 19. He had pretty good seasons.
- 24:51Those 3 back-to-back years really doing a lot with less.
- 24:56And then it kind of became, we're going to give you some
- 24:58more resources and then, you know, things kind of soured, I
- 25:01think overall, but it was still one of these things that felt
- 25:05like a safe job for the most part.
- 25:08Just don't stick your neck out too far.
- 25:10And then I think they, they just got to a place where they just
- 25:14needed, you know, just a fresh, fresh take.
- 25:18And as far as that, you know, the whole decision goes, I'm I
- 25:22or Will Stein. I don't think Steen Stein, I
- 25:25think it's Stein. It seems like he's a good move.
- 25:31You kind of go to an unknown guy who was a coordinator.
- 25:34This is the kind of place and you know, maybe I'm judging
- 25:37unfairly, but this is the kind of place where I think it's good
- 25:40to go from a coordinator to a head coach.
- 25:42You don't want to go, if you go get a guy who's like a BS, you
- 25:47know, like a just another G5 or G6A head coach and you bring him
- 25:51in and he's probably using you as a stepping stone, but you're
- 25:55getting a a coordinator from a really good team with Oregon for
- 25:58the past three years. He's at UTSA before that and
- 26:02they they were successful program while he was there and
- 26:05they're they're a tough program and they're kind of running a
- 26:08gun on offense. I like it.
- 26:10He's a Kentucky native. So being from, you know, being
- 26:13born in Louisville play, you know, played at Louisville, had
- 26:16his to kind of cut his teeth there.
- 26:18I think there's something about coming home.
- 26:20I mean, he's not at Louisville, but it's his state.
- 26:23He knows it well. I think he's going to be a good
- 26:25recruiter and there's going to be a long leash for him.
- 26:28So all that to say, he's it's not a bad one.
- 26:32I don't feel like I did with Ryan Silverfield.
- 26:35I'm just going to go right down the middle with AC.
- 26:37This one, I think I could see this one being we could look
- 26:40back in three years and this being one of those that were
- 26:42like, wow, I didn't realize how good of a higher that was.
- 26:45It was kind of overlooked at the time, but I'm going to see.
- 26:48I'm going to be Daniel. I'm very hopeful about Will
- 26:50Stein. I think working with Dan Lanning
- 26:53and being that organ culture and landing one has shown that he
- 26:57can win regardless of who is like who he has as an assistant.
- 27:01Like he's he's had a lot of turnover churn there on staff.
- 27:05But again, a fast rising star. He's young.
- 27:09He's trying to look up his age here.
- 27:11He's 36. I mean, he was spent time at
- 27:15Texas, you know, high school coach UTSA and then Oregon for
- 27:19the past two years. Very fast rising star.
- 27:22Even some of the moves we've already seen with him, like in
- 27:25the portal tells me like I I think he understands what it
- 27:28takes to win. So I'm really curious seeing
- 27:31like again, coming from a top program, first tech coaching
- 27:34job, you get an SEC job, even though it's a lower tier SEC
- 27:37job. Really curious to watch what he
- 27:40does and I'm hopeful. So B again, I don't know the
- 27:43Kentucky, I don't know the Kentucky improved, but I really
- 27:47like the hire. Like I think if you're Kentucky,
- 27:49if you're looking at like what are the best candidates you can
- 27:51get? I think like a fast rising star
- 27:54at a top 4 program in the sport. They stayed in their lane very
- 27:59well and I think that, you know, you could, you could argue me
- 28:03into AB because I'm very positive on it.
- 28:05I just it's an unknown. So I'm at AC, but no, that's I
- 28:09could definitely see where you're, I mean, this is like a
- 28:13it's a good spot to be in for him.
- 28:16It's a good spot to be in for Kentucky, right?
- 28:18Just kind of hitting the reset button.
- 28:21Yeah, I think, again, I don't know if it's an upgrade, but
- 28:24curious to see how it goes. Because he's hungry, you know
- 28:26what I mean? He's not he.
- 28:28Has to build his brand. That's right.
- 28:31He has, he's unknown relatively, so he's going to have to build
- 28:34his brand before he could even leave and he's going to have to,
- 28:37he's going to have to be successful for him to go
- 28:40anywhere else. So, you know, Kentucky can kind
- 28:43of feel good about that. That's right.
- 28:45So I love it. OK, Daniel, that's the SEC.
- 28:48That was definitely the most head coach openings and
- 28:51honestly, what 3 of the biggest jobs in the country that opened
- 28:54up were all in the SEC. Let's move to where at least two
- 28:59of the three other ones are in the Big 10 for head coaching
- 29:02chain is the big dig in the Big 10.
- 29:05Let's start with probably the biggest job, Daniel.
- 29:07Let's go to Michigan. Due to circumstances beyond
- 29:10their control, Michigan fire Sharon Moore.
- 29:14We'll leave it at that. Michigan fire Sharon Moore and
- 29:17honestly, we knew what Sharon Moore was, Daniel.
- 29:19Sharon Moore is a stopgap. Sharon Moore was a let's get
- 29:23through these cheating allegations.
- 29:24We've won our title. We know we've lost Harbaugh.
- 29:27You're not going to upgrade from Harbaugh.
- 29:29The safe thing was have he was not an interim coach by title,
- 29:34but have an interim coach for two to four years and let's get
- 29:39the program back under control. Make sure these allegations and,
- 29:43you know, punishment aren't aren't going to be much.
- 29:46You know, he's the fall guy. Well, he's now gone late in the
- 29:51cycle. So you've missed out on all the
- 29:53big names. They go and they hire Kyle
- 29:57Whittingham after he retired from Utah.
- 30:01We haven't talked about this, you and I haven't, Daniel.
- 30:03So really curious to hear your thoughts on this.
- 30:06What's your letter grade on Kyle Whittingham to Michigan?
- 30:09So I'm actually grouping these three together, or there's four
- 30:13in the Big 10. But I'm sorry, UCLA, you're
- 30:15barely in the Big 10. So Michigan, Penn State and
- 30:18Michigan State, OK, these are all like, weird because they all
- 30:25happened later than they should have.
- 30:28Penn State was the first to fire their coach, and it was like one
- 30:30of the last ones to hire a coach.
- 30:32So it was like everybody turned them down.
- 30:35It was very public and crazy. Michigan State was like one of
- 30:39the last people to fire Jonathan Smith, and they're higher.
- 30:43So anyways, we'll get to those, But I'm wanting to everybody to
- 30:47know that these are groups together for me because they're
- 30:50all this. These are good, prestigious jobs
- 30:54to get in the Big 10, but they all kind of came off the beaten
- 30:59path. So Kyle Whittingham coming by
- 31:02way of we are Jake. We've been following the sport
- 31:05for so long. Whittingham has been in our
- 31:07periphery forever and we he's got a head coach in waiting for
- 31:12the past three years at Utah. So we're like this dude's going
- 31:16to retire at any moment. I guess he kind of Mack Jones
- 31:20this or Mack Mack Brown, Mack Jones, Mack Brown does because
- 31:25Mack Brown of course had Will Muschamp in waiting as his guy
- 31:29and then he ends up leaving and then eventually coming back.
- 31:32And you know, being at North Carolina, all that to say,
- 31:36Whittingham coming here, I guess you just can't say no to
- 31:39Michigan. It's a great hire.
- 31:42I'm actually, I'm at a minus for this one.
- 31:44I like this one a lot. I think stability is name of the
- 31:47game. Michigan is big on identity.
- 31:52Kyle Whittingham is all about that.
- 31:54You're going to come in, you're going to have a defense that's
- 31:56going to, you know, be sound. And everything they do, they're
- 32:00going to, you know, block while they're going to run the ball.
- 32:02It's just as a hand in the glove for me as far as like, what you
- 32:06think Michigan wants to be and what Kyle Whittingham wants to
- 32:09be. I don't know how long he's going
- 32:11to be there. I don't think he took this job
- 32:13to be there for a year and leave or anything like that.
- 32:15And I think if he has success, I mean, you know, when you're
- 32:18renewed in a new place, I think he was kind of over Utah.
- 32:22Not that it was sour, it's just he'd been there forever.
- 32:25He's got maybe a renewed sense of like starting something new.
- 32:29Maybe it's a four year deal, maybe it's going to be 5-6
- 32:32years. But he's not, I don't think a
- 32:34long term deal. But if he's there six years, is
- 32:37that not successful? So anyways, I like Kyle, Woody
- 32:40came, I think they're going to be successful with him.
- 32:43I think he's going to, especially early on, he's going
- 32:45to win and he's going to attract people to come there.
- 32:48Apparently, Daniel, I don't have personal sources on this, but
- 32:53the rumors are that Kyle Whittingham was forced out of
- 32:56Utah and that they didn't want to lose Morgan Scally.
- 33:00And so the whole head coach of wedding thing was kind of a
- 33:02school. Hey, you need to name him head
- 33:03coach of wedding. And OK, we thought you would
- 33:06retire by now and that's enough. Oh yeah, Florida State with
- 33:10Bowden and Jimbo Fisher. I forgot about that.
- 33:13And. Apparently, apparently Utah did
- 33:15this and so I don't think if Whittingham was not wanting to
- 33:19coach football anymore. And I say that as a good thing
- 33:22because I'm giving this hiring AI think Kyle Whittingham is a
- 33:25top 10 coach in the sport. But for Michigan to go from
- 33:27Sharon Moore to Kyle Whittingham, dare I say A+ I'm
- 33:31going to stay a but Daniel the like the best coach in Utah
- 33:35history by a lot. This was I mean again, second
- 33:38most 10 year coach in the sport at a school outside of Curt
- 33:42Ference in Iowa. And this was who Urban Meyer
- 33:44hand selected as his successor after he left Utah for the
- 33:47Florida job in 2005. Yeah, Utah won multiple, I mean,
- 33:52in the heat. And he dealt with them going
- 33:54from G5 to the PAC 12 to winning PAC 12 championships.
- 33:58Daniel, Michigan is only did a top 10 coach in the sport.
- 34:00That's how I feel about it. You know what that is an A+ when
- 34:03I say it like that, Daniel, that's an A+ higher.
- 34:06You go from Sharon Moore to a top 10 coach in the sport.
- 34:09A+ from me. Upgrade.
- 34:12Huge upgrade. Penn State fires James Franklin
- 34:19hires Matt Campbell. I have a lot of thoughts here
- 34:21Daniel. What what, what grade you given
- 34:23Matt Campbell to Penn State? I'll try to keep mine brief, but
- 34:27yeah, that as far as Penn State firing early and in hiring late
- 34:33is crazy to me. They took a huge roller coaster
- 34:35ride in the public eye it looked like for a while.
- 34:39James Franklin, which we'll get to 1 that, you know, divorce and
- 34:45then all of a sudden, Matt Campbell, like a moth to flame,
- 34:49man, just showing up at that Big 10 job we always expected him
- 34:52to. He's been rumoured for so long
- 34:55to be here, there and here he is.
- 34:58Penn State, one of the premier jobs, and I can't get enough of
- 35:01it, man. I think that he is both a floor
- 35:04razor and he's got a very, very high ceiling that we have not
- 35:09been able to see yet because he's been hitting his head on
- 35:11the ceiling at his former job. So I think we're going to find
- 35:15out what the ceiling truly is at Penn State because I think he's
- 35:19going to reach it. It's an A plus for me.
- 35:20Dude, this is you're going to make me increase it.
- 35:23I'm also going A+. Yes.
- 35:26From Penn State, and here's the thing, I don't know that they
- 35:29upgraded. Let me start there.
- 35:31I I don't know if there's a ceiling on Penn State.
- 35:32I guess they they can win a national title, but I thought
- 35:35they were stupid to fire James Franklin.
- 35:37Let me start there. But to end up hiring Matt
- 35:40Campbell on the back end of that after fumbling the process
- 35:44through the middle, like you said, first job to open last or
- 35:47one of the last ones to close, it's like, hey, they ended the
- 35:51process where they should have started, which was Matt
- 35:54Campbell. And here's the thing.
- 35:56Yes. Well said.
- 35:57At the end of at the end of the day, the middle stuff's not
- 36:01going to matter. If you have a get hired, no
- 36:03one's going to remember that you fired 1st and hired last because
- 36:07I think they landed on the right result.
- 36:10That's where they should have started.
- 36:11It's where they ended up. You get Matt Campbell and to me
- 36:14it's like what's best case scenario and firing James
- 36:16Franklin, it's hiring Matt Campbell.
- 36:18That's an A+ yeah, that's. I'm glad you put a plus on it.
- 36:21Well said. A plus for me.
- 36:25Big fan of this and can't wait to see what he does at Penn
- 36:27State. Winning his coach in Iowa State
- 36:29history. Again, a place where you don't
- 36:31win and if you look and you're like, oh, you know, lots of
- 36:34seven and sixes in there. This is a look, no one's cursing
- 36:38that in Indiana. That's we, we throw that out the
- 36:40window. That's I don't know if it's ever
- 36:42going to happen again. But he just, he's a ball coach,
- 36:45man. He just wins.
- 36:46People like to work for him. He hires.
- 36:48I think they're going to be good.
- 36:49Year one, they brought a lot of Iowa State guys with him.
- 36:52He had to because James Franklin took a lot of Penn State guys
- 36:54with him. But I think they're going to be
- 36:57successful quickly because of what the they've been able to
- 37:01do, the transfer portal. I'm hesitant.
- 37:03I I want I need to see it. I need to see it.
- 37:05That's the I was going to say, hey, patience here because he's
- 37:08a, he's a ball coach man. But I mean, I'll let my BIOS
- 37:11show. I'm rooting for him.
- 37:12I'm a big Matt Campbell fan. I'm rooting for him.
- 37:15Penn State A plus for me. This was interesting.
- 37:18Daniel, Michigan State, you fire Jonathan Smith, who I was a huge
- 37:23fan of. I was so glad they hired him.
- 37:25It didn't work out. Michigan State's kind of in this
- 37:29Arkansas. Kentucky reigns from me in
- 37:32basketball school. How they're being in a big
- 37:35school, but how much they're being outspent by other Big 10
- 37:38schools, I just don't know. They hire Pat Fitzgerald after
- 37:41his his case finally gets settled with Northwestern.
- 37:45That's where he last was got fired for off the field stuff.
- 37:48Not on the field stuff. I'm having a hard time putting a
- 37:50letter on this team. I will be influenced easily on
- 37:53this one. What are you giving Pat
- 37:54Fitzgerald to Michigan State? Yeah, I would say he's a good
- 37:58coach. You know, it was weird the
- 38:01ending, of course, at Northwestern, but he was very
- 38:05highly thought of at Northwestern.
- 38:06He was a buzzword of Kirk Herb St. all the time.
- 38:09Pat Fitzgerald, you know, you're like, all right, dude, we get
- 38:11it. You like him.
- 38:12He does that for Matt Campbell too, by the way.
- 38:14But Pat Fitzgerald is a good coach and I think he's a guy
- 38:18that like will raise the floor. So for me it's AB because I
- 38:25think he's better than a lot of what would have been out there
- 38:28for them. They had to go off the beaten
- 38:31path. That's what all three of these
- 38:32hires, to me, it's like it's out.
- 38:35They were all curveballs because, you know, Michigan
- 38:38getting Kyle Whittingham. I just thought Kyle Whittingham
- 38:40was on the way out by how things were described as far as I
- 38:43thought he was going to retire. So getting him to take a new job
- 38:47was crazy. Getting Matt Campbell to finally
- 38:49leave Iowa State when it seemed like the dust that settled and
- 38:52Penn State was going to hire like a, you know, FCS head coach
- 38:56at that point. And then Michigan State hiring a
- 38:59guy that had been basically, you know, blacklisted by the NCAA
- 39:05and the Big 10 for the past two years.
- 39:07It's just it, it's a guy that's just been out of out of sight,
- 39:11out of mind, so I just forgot about him.
- 39:14It's just as easy as that. So the fact that his name popped
- 39:16back up, I'm like, wait a second, this is weird.
- 39:18And you know, I'm sure he wants to get back at Northwestern and
- 39:21all of that. So I think he's going to be
- 39:23motivated. I think he wants to rebrand
- 39:25himself and he's a great coach. So I am going to have this as
- 39:29ABI think he's because of his experience, he's familiar with
- 39:34the conference, all that stuff. Give me just an even B for him,
- 39:38for Pat Fitzgerald. I will also go B, Then I put B.
- 39:43Dude, I could have gone AB or C to be honest with you.
- 39:46OK? Pat Fitzgerald is the winningest
- 39:47coach in Northwestern history. It sucks at an end of the way
- 39:50that the way it did in Northwestern because, I mean, he
- 39:52won like every defensive award you can win in college football
- 39:55as a player for Northwestern. He won two coach of the year
- 39:59awards. He won the Big 10 W twice, went
- 40:03to two Big 10 championships. Won 110 games at Northwestern.
- 40:08That's not easy to do. So I, I he's been out of it for
- 40:12three years. But my question marks with him
- 40:16are, I mean, college football's changed a lot in three years,
- 40:20Daniel. It's changed a lot.
- 40:21There are coaches who have done this a long time who are
- 40:23struggling to adapt in this new era.
- 40:27So that is my only hesitation with him as a football coach is
- 40:32and he adapt to this new era. Does the way he won before still
- 40:35does the way he won before still work?
- 40:37Because I have no doubt that he can go to a bottom feeder big
- 40:40team program and win some football games and upset teams
- 40:43and this build a stout program where they probably have guys
- 40:47stay for longer and not as many portal players.
- 40:50You know, like I it's kind of how he was at Northwestern, even
- 40:53though it's kind of, you know, pre portal beginning of portal
- 40:57ish on there when he left. But cautiously optimistic.
- 41:01It's kind of how to use a baseball term.
- 41:03I was like, you know, I put baseball term by all these two
- 41:05just. But I was, I was trying to
- 41:06figure out what we were gonna do.
- 41:08And I put like long fly ball dot dot, dot of like, I have no, you
- 41:12know, is this gonna be caught like half, you know, like when
- 41:15you're sitting in a baseball stadium.
- 41:17Yeah. And like you're sitting behind a
- 41:18plate in the upper deck and every fly ball looks like it
- 41:21could be a home run. Then they catch it like a third
- 41:23of the way in the outfield and you're like, Oh, well, that was
- 41:26I'm like, that's kind of how that feels.
- 41:27I'm sitting in the stands. The outfielders run towards the
- 41:30wall and you're like, this is carrying, is there enough?
- 41:32Brand that's kind of how I feel about this coaching hires.
- 41:36This has the potential to be a home run.
- 41:39It could also be like a first pitch out this don't I don't
- 41:42know. This is one of my biggest
- 41:44variables, but and with the on because he he's a good football
- 41:47coach, he's one at the bottom feet of the big this.
- 41:50Is the guy you take a chance on? Give him a shot.
- 41:52You know, I agree. Yep.
- 41:54They cleaned up the off the field stuff.
- 41:55There's not any of that stuff lingering.
- 41:58You're just looking at who can we hire to be the best football
- 42:01coach. I think they did a good job.
- 42:02I think so too. Lastly, in the Big 10, UCLA
- 42:06hires Bob Chesney. That's another job that opened
- 42:09up early. Daniel, Bob Chesney, James
- 42:11Madison tech coach. He goes over there.
- 42:13What letter grade are you giving this one?
- 42:15Yeah, the phenomenal hair. If I was grading the hair, it's
- 42:18an A+. He's definitely got that McVeigh
- 42:21thing going on where they're all trying to look.
- 42:23Really. Really handsome.
- 42:25So if he's going to be in Southern California, I think
- 42:27that gets you, you know, a good step ahead.
- 42:30Jacob, I didn't realize how long he had been a head coach for his
- 42:35head coaching record, 132 and 52.
- 42:38I mean, he's just now, you know, there's a lot of D2 in there.
- 42:42There's a lot of Holy Cross. There's a lot, you know, he's,
- 42:46he's putting work in. But following Kirk Signetti at
- 42:50James Madison, not easy. And he did it and he did a
- 42:54really good job while he was at at James Madison.
- 42:57And he's not been at a big school.
- 42:59So I, you know, for that I'm wondering, but also like UCLA,
- 43:05they've had their moments in football, but they've never
- 43:08been, you know, necessarily a powerhouse in football or
- 43:11anything like that basketball school or there there are a lot
- 43:14of sports school. They they play, they, you know,
- 43:16or have a wide variety of I feel like they are very diverse.
- 43:20And so it's tough to pinpoint that, but I think they hired a
- 43:23good football coach and they hired a guy who's done it with
- 43:27less talent and he's had to be really good X's and O's.
- 43:30YC has been really good developer and he's shown that
- 43:33over the course of his career. He's been a head coach since
- 43:362010. So he's not walking into some
- 43:38scared, you know, like I don't know what I'm doing.
- 43:41He's not going to for, you know, I think they got a good guy.
- 43:45I am at A, I'm at AB minus and I I could be persuaded to a full
- 43:53letter, you know, to a full B, but he's definitely someone who
- 43:57I like. I think he's on the trend up
- 43:59simply just not going to know. We're going to say that about
- 44:01everybody, I guess, but you know, it is what it is.
- 44:04Give me AB minus for Bob Chesney.
- 44:10It's another one I'm hopeful on in that if you're UCLA, what
- 44:14kind of coach do you go and get? And I think this is it.
- 44:16And I hate to say, like, you know, I feel like a trend this
- 44:19year is if you look at this, Daniel, I can't tell.
- 44:23Do we talk about this or talk about someone else?
- 44:26No, the trend is OK. What's winning in college
- 44:29football? All right, let's go back a few
- 44:31years. Kirby Smarts coming off of
- 44:34back-to-back national titles. What is the coaching trend then?
- 44:38It is where are the Saban disciples?
- 44:41Where are the Saban coordinators or coordinators at these big
- 44:44schools? Like that's who needs to get
- 44:46these jobs. Sark gets hired.
- 44:48Link Haven gets hired. Like it's like the we we want to
- 44:51hire the next Kirby. A trend this year, and I haven't
- 44:53mentioned it yet, is we want the next Hurt Signetti, who's the
- 44:56Group of Five head coach, Yeah, who can come here and help us
- 45:00win anywhere and help us win in year 1.
- 45:03And I mean, look at look at the list we've talked about so far,
- 45:06Daniel, you've got John Summerall, Florida, Alex Golesh,
- 45:09Ryan Silverfield, Bob Chesney, UCLA, and we'll talk about a
- 45:12couple more of these. But that's kind of the trend is
- 45:15who's Arsignetti? You know, because he he's the
- 45:17one who just won. So I'm cautious with that in
- 45:21the, again, higher good football coaches.
- 45:23But I think Bob Chesney's a good football coach.
- 45:24So I'm going to go B. I'm not going to go as low as B
- 45:27minus. I'm pretty I put A to B Daniel,
- 45:30so I'm gonna go B OK, OK, I'm I'm again, I'm cautiously
- 45:34optimistic, not just because I want I wanted to clarify to say
- 45:37not just because it's like, oh, just like Signetti is the James
- 45:40Madison a coach. I think he's a good football
- 45:42coach. And I think if you're UCLA,
- 45:44finding a good football coach who's a ball guy and Exos guy
- 45:48from the G5 level is a really good move for them.
- 45:52And I think there's a really good chance they upgraded a head
- 45:54coach. That's why I had an A ceiling on
- 45:56it. But I'll go beat for UCLA and
- 45:58Bob Chesney. All right, we've covered the
- 45:59SEC, the Big 10. Let's move into ACC and Big 12.
- 46:04Let's start with Daniel. Virginia Tech hires James
- 46:08Franklin. This would be 1A and 1B for me,
- 46:12Daniel, as far as best hires of the offseason, what letter grid
- 46:16are you giving James Franklin to Virginia Tech?
- 46:18Yeah, for me, it's been a slam dunk since the start.
- 46:21A plus, I mean. A plus for me too.
- 46:24I think he was very seriously considered at a lot of other
- 46:27schools as well. And I think that he set his
- 46:30sights on really good spot to be.
- 46:32It is what it is. I think Virginia Tech, I think
- 46:34he could revive that program back to their once glory under
- 46:38Beamer, under Frank Beamer. And I think that, you know, he's
- 46:42got a very clear path in the ACC and then he got right to work,
- 46:46man. He got, he flipped a lot of
- 46:48commitments that were committed to him at Penn State.
- 46:50They flipped basically everybody over signing day.
- 46:53And then a lot of guys at Penn State just were on the way out
- 46:58transfer wise. They all transferred to Virginia
- 47:00Tech. So I think All in all, he is
- 47:01close to 30 players between the recruits and the transfer guys,
- 47:06basically an infuse of of Penn State guys.
- 47:09But more than that, he's just a good football coach.
- 47:11Everywhere he's gone, he's been successful.
- 47:14And for a while out, like I I mentioned earlier with Penn
- 47:18State, I think I was getting ready to be like, you know, Penn
- 47:21State basically, you know, pulled in Auburn on this when
- 47:24Auburn fired Gus Malzahn and they just got worse.
- 47:27I I think that Penn State salvage that by getting a really
- 47:30good hire. But yeah, I've got James
- 47:33Franklin is a really good hire as well as an elite hire.
- 47:36He's a plus for me. A plus, I think 1A1B you could
- 47:40argue as far as who the school is and what they got.
- 47:43You think you can make the argument that's the best hire of
- 47:45the offseason? Yeah.
- 47:47James Franklin and Penn State's fatal flaw was they couldn't
- 47:51beat Ohio State, Michigan and Oregon.
- 47:53And last year the bottom fell out after that.
- 47:56And that was why he got fired. And part of me understands it.
- 47:59Again, part of me looks at Penn State outside of the fact that
- 48:01they hired Matt Campbell and says, like, what's the ceiling?
- 48:05Because I think James Franklin was scraping the ceiling.
- 48:08And look, maybe four years from now, we look back and I'm like,
- 48:11man, I was so wrong. And Matt Campbell has won his
- 48:13second national championship, and I'm rooting for that.
- 48:17This is an A+ plus. This might be my favorite hire
- 48:21of the offseason. He gets to stay geographically
- 48:24close to where he was at Penn State.
- 48:26He has won everywhere he's been. James Franklin has he gets to go
- 48:31to Virginia Tech. And I think the only person is
- 48:33happier than probably Virginia Tech fans is Jim Phillips, the
- 48:37ACC commissioner. Because how good is this for
- 48:39your conference that you got, I think a top ten head coach in
- 48:43the sport to come to Virginia Tech and you know who's not in
- 48:46his way anymore? Ohio State, Michigan and Oregon,
- 48:50who's in his way now? Miami, sure.
- 48:53They're the they're the powerhouse in the ACC Absolutely
- 48:57Clemson question mark. And are either of those schools
- 49:00on the same level of as a program consistency wise as Ohio
- 49:04State, Michigan or Oregon? The answer's no.
- 49:06So there is a real chance James Franklin could come in and be
- 49:09top dog in the ACC and just like a Penn State, but way more open.
- 49:14This is AI mean. This is a golden path to the
- 49:17playoff every year. And now it's how high is the
- 49:20ceiling? Because I have no doubt he can
- 49:22come in and win the ACC and go to the playoff most years.
- 49:25Playoff most years, not when ACC most years.
- 49:27I think, you know, once every three to four years he should be
- 49:31one of the conference. That's that's what I think of
- 49:32James Franklin. And now it's like what?
- 49:34What's the ceiling at Virginia Tech?
- 49:35I think we're going to find out because I think James Franklin
- 49:37raises the floor and approaches the ceiling at whatever program
- 49:41he's at. So I think very, very highly of
- 49:43James Franklin. You and I were both pretty
- 49:45strong on it was a mistake for Penn State to fire him.
- 49:48Although we think about how Matt Campbell's a very good hire.
- 49:50I think this is the best hire of the offseason.
- 49:52The more I think about it, it's James Franklin to Virginia Tech.
- 49:55A lot of schools wanted them and I think it's a great move by him
- 49:58as well to get, I think it's a win win all around for him to go
- 50:01to Virginia Tech. Daniel Stanford, Andrew Luck's
- 50:04first hire as is is he general manager, president of football.
- 50:07I don't know what he is. They're they're kind of running
- 50:09that like an NFL. Over there general manager I
- 50:11think. It's Avita Pritchard.
- 50:13So he hires at Stanford. He's a Stanford guy.
- 50:16Daniel what? What letter grade are you giving
- 50:18Coach Pritchard to Stanford? Yeah, I'm this is it's tough
- 50:26because he's not been head coach anywhere.
- 50:28And by what I'm looking at, I don't know if he's even really
- 50:32been, he's not been on many people's radar for Kyle, you
- 50:38know, being a, a college head coach.
- 50:39He's been at Stanford singularly.
- 50:41And then he went to the commanders for a couple years as
- 50:45their offensive coordinator. But our quarterbacks coach,
- 50:48excuse me, he wasn't offensive coordinator.
- 50:50That was, what's his name, Coach handsome.
- 50:53Anyways, it it's a a curveball, but they kind of have to do that
- 50:58Stanford and I think that, you know, luck just kind of went
- 51:01with his guy trying to keep it comfortable.
- 51:05You know, it is what it is. I'm not going to give it a high
- 51:08grade. I'm not going to flunk him or I
- 51:11guess give him AD like we did Ryan Silverfield.
- 51:13But I must say, C minus. We'll see what happens and just,
- 51:17you know, keep it moving. Completely agree C minus I put a
- 51:20question mark by it. Let me tell you who this reminds
- 51:23me of of when a coaching hire semi recently that I was just
- 51:27like I have no idea what to think of this person.
- 51:31It was Jedfish when he got hired at Arizona, and I give that AC
- 51:35minus of just like, OK, he's kind of bounced around, kind of
- 51:38been in the NFL little bit. He was, I think it was like he
- 51:41was, I think it was coming off of what, like the Patriots
- 51:44quarterbacks coach. I think it's what he was before
- 51:46the Arizona job. It was something like that.
- 51:48Yeah, that's right. And it's just like, I mean, I
- 51:51have no idea what to think of this.
- 51:53Like I have, I have no idea who he is.
- 51:54It's like he's been around successful people.
- 51:57Right, and I'm like, I have no idea and and he's turned out to
- 51:59be a a good coach, good football coach, C minus, but I'm like
- 52:04that that was my comparison is maybe he's like a Jet Fish and I
- 52:06know nothing about him and he's going to come in to just be a
- 52:09really good football coach. They got the Stanford, you know,
- 52:11bromance going on over there. So he's what was that for?
- 52:14Him while luck was there. He he proceeded Luck as a
- 52:17quarterback. He was the quarterback before
- 52:19Andrew Luck or he was there those same years.
- 52:20I don't know he was starter back, to be honest with you, but
- 52:24yeah, he was. He's only ever been at Stanford
- 52:26or the Commander's quarterbacks coach, and now he's back at
- 52:29Stanford as the head coach. So I hope it works out there.
- 52:33Crosstown ACC rival? Nothing like Atlantic Coast
- 52:37rival Cal and Stanford. On the Pacific Ocean.
- 52:40The Pacific Ocean Cal dude, again, they did something funny.
- 52:45They fired the Oregon defensive coordinator, Justin Wilcox, and
- 52:47they hired the Oregon defensive coordinator, Tosh Lapoy.
- 52:50What? What letter grade do you give
- 52:51Cal's hiring of Tosh Lapoy? Yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm very
- 52:55interested to see. He's from California, of course,
- 52:59defensive line coach at Cal way back when.
- 53:02That's where he started his head, his coaching career.
- 53:06And then, you know, he's one of these guys is Alabama.
- 53:11You know, he, he he was a defensive assistant for Nick
- 53:16Saban for years, really got a big reputation for being a great
- 53:21recruiter. And so that kind of continued to
- 53:24stick around. And he was just kind of known
- 53:26around as such a good recruiter. And of course, he had the
- 53:29California ties, So he had that that pipeline going.
- 53:33And you know, Alabama at that point is just like, you know,
- 53:36Nick Saban's basically got The Avengers on his staff when he's,
- 53:40you know, recruiting everybody. And so if you stand out as an
- 53:42elite recruiter on that staff, you're an elite recruiter.
- 53:46So of course, that's where he absolutely Dan Lanning.
- 53:51And so that's where that connection came through, why he
- 53:53became his defensive coordinator, you know, in the
- 53:56NFL with Cleveland Browns, the Atlanta Falcons, Jags, I think
- 54:00so he's definitely, you know, been around.
- 54:03He's one of these names that's been adjacent.
- 54:05When he popped up as the Oregon DC past couple years, I was
- 54:10like, it's nice to see that he grew into that.
- 54:12Because when he was made defensive coordinator at
- 54:14Alabama, I remember him being fired from that role because
- 54:19Nick Saban said, admittedly, he gave him too much too quick.
- 54:23He promoted him because he was scared to lose him because of
- 54:25his recruiting chops and he was kind of overwhelmed.
- 54:28But I think that it seems like Tasha Boy has grown and it was.
- 54:33He just wasn't ready to call defense yet.
- 54:35He wasn't 1 of Saban. Saban holds everybody to
- 54:37extremely high standards. He was not ready for that role
- 54:40when he got it. Yep.
- 54:43And it's OK, all that lore to say now he's here, he's back
- 54:48home and he's a really good recruiter.
- 54:51And I think that it kind of shows that Cal cares about
- 54:53football, which gets me excited. I'm going to give it AB minus,
- 54:57how about that AB minus Tosh Lapoy?
- 55:00I like him. He's a first time head coach,
- 55:01but he's kind of been around for a while.
- 55:03I'm going it's funny. I'm like, what's the what, what
- 55:06what grade did I give? I'm giving him AB.
- 55:08This is the same. This is Will Stein by me.
- 55:10For me like this the same and not just because they both came
- 55:13from Oregon, but like you mentioned, both elite recruiters
- 55:16on an elite staff around good programs.
- 55:18And for for him, they've been in an SEC program to go and spend
- 55:24what is it three years in the NFL coming back and being a
- 55:26coordinator at a top level program in Oregon.
- 55:28Again, I think you got to think different if you're at a program
- 55:31like Cal, like Stanford, like these mid to bottom tier power
- 55:36force schools where football is not prioritized.
- 55:40And I think being around the NFL helps and that you're a football
- 55:43guy. And I'm sure he he he's got a
- 55:45big resume of people he's learned from.
- 55:49He was a standout on that staff. And good on Cal again for not
- 55:53doing the stupid thing and saying, well, we hired the
- 55:55Oregon DC last time. We're not going to do that
- 55:58again. Just hire the guy that's the
- 56:00best fit and I think I think they did that with Tasha Lapoy.
- 56:03So don't know if it's an upgrade.
- 56:05Again, don't know the the ceiling at Cow.
- 56:08I don't know if Justin Wilcox was hitting that, but it's AB
- 56:11for me. I like the hire of him at Cow.
- 56:16OK Dingo, Big 12, three more. Oklahoma State hires Eric Morris
- 56:20after firing Mike Gundy. Mike Gundy was what like the
- 56:22third most 10 year coach in college football?
- 56:25Just a messy ending there. It just the bottom fell out.
- 56:28Gundy had to be fired his way wasn't going to win anymore.
- 56:32They go and get Eric Morris. What's your What's your letter
- 56:35grade on Eric Morris, Daniel? Keep it brief, man.
- 56:37This is an AI like it. Eric Morris is the man.
- 56:41Looking through guys that he's coached with along the way, I
- 56:44mean, he coached, you know, with Mike Leach at Washington State.
- 56:49You know, he's coached at Texas Tech with Coach Handsome.
- 56:52He went back to all Washington State with Mike Leach and then
- 56:56or excuse me, not with Mike Leach.
- 56:57That was his second stint anyways.
- 57:01North Texas has been a problem and they were really good last
- 57:05year. His Air Raid attack that he's
- 57:07got going on. I just feel like this is a hand
- 57:10in the glove, you know, as far as going to Oklahoma State, he's
- 57:14from Texas. So he's going to have the
- 57:15pipeline of, you know, knowing a lot of these coaches in this
- 57:18area, coach Houston, like he's just Incarnate Ward.
- 57:21He's going to be one of these guys I think is going to be
- 57:23successful and he does what Oklahoma State wants to do.
- 57:28So give me an A for Eric Morris. OK, remind me, this was this is
- 57:33the same? Is this the same?
- 57:35He was at Incarnate Ward with Kim Ward and then got hired at
- 57:40Washington State. Is this the OC that came with
- 57:42him or is that someone else? Yes, that is correct.
- 57:44OK, I'm like this, this was my second best group of five head
- 57:50coach available. I think the other schools should
- 57:54have gone after Eric Morris and the fact that Oklahoma State
- 57:56landed him is a big deal. And the fact that he chose
- 57:59Oklahoma State tells me that Oklahoma State's putting more
- 58:02investment cuz I know that's not the only offer he had.
- 58:05I'm a big fan of Eric Morris. This is an A for me as well.
- 58:08I hope it works. This could be really exciting to
- 58:10have some really good ball coaches in the Big 12 to go
- 58:13compete with Texas Tech cuz they're just going to outspend
- 58:16everybody. But yeah, proven like XS and OS
- 58:21guys in OC proven head coach now at the G5 level, North Texas has
- 58:27been a problem. His offense is is is fun.
- 58:29It's modern. It's what everybody wants to
- 58:32run. He again for following the
- 58:34trend. He imported all his best players
- 58:37in the Oklahoma State. So he's doing he's doing that
- 58:41thing lookout for Oklahoma State to be a problem in year one.
- 58:44That's where I'm at with Eric Morris.
- 58:45So a for me as well Daniel Kansas State my climbing Chris
- 58:50climbing Chris climbing. I'm like sitting like similar
- 58:52names here like looking like that's not right.
- 58:55Retires Kansas State like athletic director visibly upset
- 58:59about it because Chris Kleiman just in it.
- 59:01It's a shame. We're going to talk next week
- 59:02about the state of college football and I promise it won't
- 59:05all be negative all positive stuff to say it.
- 59:07We love college football. It's still great.
- 59:08It's a shame that a coach like Chris Kleiman stepped away
- 59:10because of the the where college football is.
- 59:13Right now. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:14That's not fun. Klein is a good guy, good coach.
- 59:17So he steps away. You don't fire a head coach.
- 59:20Kansas State gets to hire the golden child, Colin Klein.
- 59:24You know, one of, if not the best quarterback in Kansas State
- 59:26history played for. It's a great podcast.
- 59:30I'm going to blank on the greatest Kansas Kansas State
- 59:32head coach's name. My God, I'm embarrassed.
- 59:35Golly, Bill Snyder. Thank you.
- 59:37I'm like Snyder. Like the Frigid Stadium is named
- 59:39after him. I'm pretty sure Bill Snyder
- 59:41played for Snyder as a quarterback.
- 59:44They hire Colin Klein. What?
- 59:45What grade are you giving this Daniel?
- 59:47Yeah, I like this one a lot. I've actually got this one as an
- 59:50A. OK.
- 59:52So we're good. You know, he's he's someone who
- 59:54I think that he wanted to have this job.
- 59:58He's been, you know, he's a coordinator there, went to Texas
- 1:00:00A&M. You don't leave home for
- 1:00:02anything. So he went for a good job being
- 1:00:05a, you know, promotion and then he gets to come home to another
- 1:00:08promotion. So I think he was great player
- 1:00:10there. He was a really good offensive
- 1:00:12coordinator while he was there and I think.
- 1:00:14I think he's going to be, you know, hand in the glove fit.
- 1:00:16Yeah, for him to have again, if if you're a school like this is
- 1:00:19what every school wants to have and wants to have work out right
- 1:00:22is you have someone who is like an amazing player for you, like
- 1:00:27an all time player for you, like from the state come home and be
- 1:00:31a head coach and then be successful.
- 1:00:33Every school wants it. Very few actually get it.
- 1:00:36Kansas State has a chance to get it.
- 1:00:38I, I'm going be, I've not given any OC, did a head coach move an
- 1:00:44A yet. This would be my one, but I'm
- 1:00:47going to go B just because I, I, I hope it works out.
- 1:00:52That's my, like I, it's hard for me to look at it and be like,
- 1:00:54yes, I'm confident this is an A as far as you've ever had head
- 1:00:57coaching experience. But again, that doesn't mean
- 1:00:59it's not going to work. Like I said, some of the best
- 1:01:00coaches in the sport were coordinators and their first
- 1:01:03job, they're being ultra successful.
- 1:01:06So I'm going to go B out of principle, but really, really,
- 1:01:09really like this hire and again, rooting for it.
- 1:01:12The Kansas State has their Golden Boy be a be a great head
- 1:01:14coach and he's there 20 years. What I'm hoping for.
- 1:01:18Lastly, Daniel, you know, Iowa State kind of gets the the butt
- 1:01:22of it if unfortunately with with where we are in the sport
- 1:01:24because of Penn State's lack dragging their feet in the
- 1:01:28hiring cycle. Now their job opens up last when
- 1:01:32they finally land where they should have started.
- 1:01:34They could have saved Iowa State a lot of trouble had they just
- 1:01:37started with Matt Campbell like they should have.
- 1:01:40Danielle, Iowa State hires Jimmy Rogers from Washington State.
- 1:01:44What letter grade are you giving this head coach?
- 1:01:46Yeah, Jimmy Rogers walked into a tough spot at Washington State
- 1:01:50when he went there and just kind of, you know, was a basically
- 1:01:55just filling a gap, I think. And his time at South Dakota
- 1:01:59State was good. It's so recent and new.
- 1:02:02It's tough to give it like a really high grade.
- 1:02:04But I, I'm not down on him. I think he's going to be
- 1:02:07successful. I'm AC plus, but I, I like him.
- 1:02:12I like him. I think he could do really good
- 1:02:14things. And he's another one of these
- 1:02:15kind of reminds me of like how Will Stein?
- 1:02:18You're like he might be something in a couple years
- 1:02:20where you look back and be like, you know what, That was really
- 1:02:22good hire. We weren't expecting that.
- 1:02:24He's definitely not going to be upgraded or Matt Campbell.
- 1:02:26So but yeah, give me AC Plus for Jimmy Rogers.
- 1:02:30This one for me, Daniel, I'm going, I'm going B and I'm
- 1:02:35giving some, I'm giving some. I'm giving some credit to you
- 1:02:40know what? No, I'm not even going to
- 1:02:41clarify. It's AB.
- 1:02:42This guy won at South Dakota State.
- 1:02:44He only had one season at Washington State, so he can't
- 1:02:47really build anything there. Now he gets the Iowa State job,
- 1:02:50which which is an upgrade of Washington State in the current
- 1:02:51climate, but he's a winner at the FCS level at South Dakota
- 1:02:55State. He was on staff at South Dakota
- 1:02:57State before he became the head coach, where he was the
- 1:03:00assistant head coach in the DC at South Dakota State.
- 1:03:03So he's been on a winning program for a long time.
- 1:03:05And I think if you're Iowa State, again, you want someone
- 1:03:08like Matt Campbell, who's a ball coach man who can like develop
- 1:03:12players, take under recruited guys, develop them and that's
- 1:03:16what they're doing at the FCS level year in and year out.
- 1:03:19So this is AB for me. I could go higher, but it's AB
- 1:03:23for me. Especially a lot of credit for
- 1:03:26the administration for like pulling the trigger and hiring
- 1:03:28him because of how little time they had to make a hire and the
- 1:03:32candidates being gone. I think given what they had,
- 1:03:35this is honestly, if you're into the situation, you could say
- 1:03:37it's an A, but I'm giving it AB as far as just like fit and hire
- 1:03:42B for Jimmy Rogers to Iowa State.
- 1:03:45OK, Daniel, lastly, rapid fire here.
- 1:03:47Yes, all right. Best fit.
- 1:03:50Best fit? I'm going to go James Franklin.
- 1:03:54That's my interest to you. We're going to have a lot of
- 1:03:56same interest here. That's mine's also James
- 1:03:58Franklin, worst fit. I'm going to say it's Ryan
- 1:04:02Silverfield. Mine too.
- 1:04:04I was like we're going to go suit for 2 here.
- 1:04:07Most likely to lose to their rival in Year 1.
- 1:04:12I'm going to go with Mr. KGB himself, Alex Golesh.
- 1:04:16That's a good one. He's got 2 rivals and he's going
- 1:04:19to lose to both. Georgia and Alabama are always
- 1:04:22on their schedule, so worst case he's going to at least lose to
- 1:04:25one of them. So I think it's a slam dunk.
- 1:04:27He has to play 2 every year. For terms of a graphic later,
- 1:04:31I'll I will go with you with Golush, but my answer is still
- 1:04:33silver field most likely. It is Arkansas's rival, so.
- 1:04:38It doesn't matter. Pick one up, they're going to
- 1:04:40lose. To everybody, yeah, I'm like,
- 1:04:42good. They might.
- 1:04:44I mean, they lost to Memphis last year, so.
- 1:04:45OK, most likely. How about that?
- 1:04:49Let's say first to win a College Football Playoff.
- 1:04:51How's that? It's the most likely.
- 1:04:52Like first to win the College Football Playoff.
- 1:04:56Yeah, I mean, I I think it's got to be Lane Kiffin.
- 1:04:59That's my answer too. I think it's Lane Kiffin most
- 1:05:03likely to be fired first. I.
- 1:05:05Think this is also go lesh that. Was going to be my answer.
- 1:05:08I think it's go lush too. It's just Florida's a it's just
- 1:05:11a tough place to stay long term right now.
- 1:05:15I mean, miles on the way. Yeah.
- 1:05:17What did I say? Florida it's OK, but.
- 1:05:20Auburn, that was. I know what you're saying #2 for
- 1:05:22what it's worth. Really.
- 1:05:24Just cuz I. Would not have gone there.
- 1:05:26I think Florida fires quickly. They fired Mullen before they
- 1:05:29should have, but yeah. Yeah, that one go lush was my
- 1:05:31answer. I don't think this will happen,
- 1:05:35but if LSU goes 8 and 4 back-to-back years, do they fire
- 1:05:39Kiffin? That's it.
- 1:05:40I mean, you know what I mean. It's just like the expectations
- 1:05:43are through the roof, as they should be.
- 1:05:45For what it's worth, some of those big schools are impatient.
- 1:05:50But yes, I think you're right in the the answer is Golesh there.
- 1:05:56We've agreed on all of these -1 but really, I agree with you
- 1:05:58with Golesh. We're going to agree on this
- 1:06:00one, too. Best chance to win their
- 1:06:02conference in Year 1. I have James Franklin.
- 1:06:09I'm tier one. I think you're right.
- 1:06:12I think it's James Franklin. I'm tempted to go lane.
- 1:06:15I'm tempted to go lane. I'm all in.
- 1:06:17Yeah, I think and I think all the theatrics of how he left as
- 1:06:21people, I don't think we're I don't think we're talking about
- 1:06:24the football coach Lane Kiffin at LSU enough.
- 1:06:27I think that has been a that's been the sideshow to what's been
- 1:06:30front and center of like quit Lane's doing and he looks so
- 1:06:33weird the basketball game and he left the Saints game earlier,
- 1:06:36whatever it was, and left the it's just like, hey, I think
- 1:06:40we're forgetting Lane Kiffin, the football coach who brought
- 1:06:43Ole Miss back-to-back to back double digit one season for the
- 1:06:45first time ever, who took their team 11 and one to a college
- 1:06:49ball playoff. And no, he didn't coach in those
- 1:06:50games that that team was capable of winning two games in the
- 1:06:53playoff at Ole Miss. That guy's the head coach at LSU
- 1:06:56now. Yeah, I think we're I think
- 1:06:57we're not it's it's hard to believe we're talking about
- 1:07:00Lynn, Kevin this much. And I think that's not being
- 1:07:03talked about enough. It's amazing.
- 1:07:06For the sake of the no, you know what?
- 1:07:07You're right. The most likely to win in year
- 1:07:091, their conference, it is James Franklin, Virginia Tech.
- 1:07:11I agree. OK, Daniel, we will be back next
- 1:07:14week. And look, stay on the social.
- 1:07:16We're gonna have fun graphics like this.
- 1:07:18Graphics Guy Bin is in the kitchen.
- 1:07:20He's cooking, dude. He's he's cooking, but we'll,
- 1:07:23we'll have all these head coaches graded on graphics
- 1:07:25there. So be sure to follow us on
- 1:07:26Instagram at the extra point pod.
- 1:07:28You'll also catch these graphics on Daniel's nice Twitter
- 1:07:31accounts. We'll be back next week to talk
- 1:07:34the state of college football. We just had the state of the
- 1:07:36union. We're recording this the day
- 1:07:38half of the state of the union. What's the what's the state of
- 1:07:40the sport? What's the state of college
- 1:07:42football? Daniel?
- 1:07:42How do we feel about our beloved sport that we think is the
- 1:07:45greatest sport in the world? Still think that.
- 1:07:47So it'll be a positive episode. We'll have some bones to pick
- 1:07:50about stuff we wish was different.
- 1:07:51How we change it. So what's hey, what's the what's
- 1:07:53the state of the sport? We'll get that right here on the
- 1:07:56Extra Point next week. You can follow Daniel on Twitter
- 1:08:00at Deep South. Daniel, you can follow me on
- 1:08:02Twitter at Jacob Karnes with AK. That will do it for this edition
- 1:08:05of The Extra point. He is Daniel.
- 1:08:07I am Jacob. See ya.
