- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode sixty two of.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Cards and Categories.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I'm Mike Coolard from Radsball, joined as always by my
- 0:23Speaker 1: very good friend Jeremy Brewer, also from as Ball.
- 0:26Speaker 3: How are you doing tonight, Bud, I'm doing great. It
- 0:29Speaker 3: is playoff baseball time. It has been an exciting week.
- 0:32Speaker 3: It's like the playoffs started early, and so I'm I'm
- 0:36Speaker 3: raring ready to go because it is excitement. I was
- 0:39Speaker 3: never a big fan at the beginning when they put
- 0:41Speaker 3: the more teams in the wild card, I have been
- 0:43Speaker 3: a convert. So it is an exciting exciting time for us.
- 0:47Speaker 4: So ready to dig in today.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah, we are recording this on Wednesday, October second, so
- 0:52Speaker 1: we are right in the heart of the playoffs. We're
- 0:54Speaker 1: actually recording right in the middle of the game two
- 0:58Speaker 1: Brewers and Mets. So we've already seen both of the
- 1:03Speaker 1: ale kind of top seeds that were in the wild
- 1:05Speaker 1: card be knocked off this afternoon, between the Astros and
- 1:09Speaker 1: the Orioles getting trounced by al Central foes. Who I mean,
- 1:14Speaker 1: both the Tigers and the Royals had no business being
- 1:18Speaker 1: in the playoffs just because they both went like ten
- 1:22Speaker 1: to one versus the White Sox, I think it actually was,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and one for the Royals. I don't know what it
- 1:26Speaker 1: is at the top of my head for the Tigers,
- 1:28Speaker 1: but certainly that boosted their odds considering that the Mariners
- 1:32Speaker 1: only missed the playoffs by one game. And it's been
- 1:35Speaker 1: pretty chaotic since we talked last week. I think I
- 1:38Speaker 1: just want to rewind it all the way back to
- 1:40Speaker 1: Monday when we had that doubleheader that was set up
- 1:44Speaker 1: that we had covered and previewed a little bit last week,
- 1:47Speaker 1: because Game one of that doubleheader ended up being one
- 1:50Speaker 1: of the greatest baseball games I've seen in my lifetime
- 1:54Speaker 1: that I can really remember. It was a back and
- 1:56Speaker 1: forth battle between the Braves and the Mets and just
- 2:00Speaker 1: got absolutely out of hand that the Braves are up
- 2:04Speaker 1: three nothing before the Mets opened up six to three.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Lead in the eighth.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Braves come back on Edwin Diaz in the bottom of
- 2:12Speaker 1: the eighth to score four runs and then the decisive
- 2:16Speaker 1: home run by Francisco Lindor in the top of the
- 2:19Speaker 1: ninth to give the Mets an eight seven lead to
- 2:22Speaker 1: be able to bury the Braves and send them into
- 2:25Speaker 1: the playoffs, and ultimately like it burnt through both of
- 2:30Speaker 1: their bullpens hard. So it's kind of crazy that the
- 2:32Speaker 1: Mets are I mean, it looks like they're going to
- 2:35Speaker 1: take out the Brewers here pretty soon. The Braves look
- 2:38Speaker 1: like they are pretty toast in San Diego right now.
- 2:41Speaker 1: But with this game on Monday, Francisco Lindor, it was
- 2:44Speaker 1: the highest Championship win probability added game of the season,
- 2:49Speaker 1: just because, like that's calculating, you know, how much of
- 2:52Speaker 1: the odds you're pushing your team in terms of being
- 2:55Speaker 1: able to win the World Series. Obviously, hitting a homer
- 2:59Speaker 1: in the top of the ninth to send you into
- 3:00Speaker 1: the playoffs is pretty significant.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I'll link to it, but Samuel.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Wrote a great article about it, just about you know,
- 3:09Speaker 1: pressure and when it does the players. But that's where
- 3:12Speaker 1: I got that stat about the Championship win probability added.
- 3:16Speaker 2: The largest swing in.
- 3:18Speaker 1: CWPA is how I'm gonna start calling it now, CWPA.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's the largest swing in that since twenty eleven, which
- 3:25Speaker 1: if you recall that year that is the last day
- 3:28Speaker 1: of the season that had the dramatic walk off from
- 3:31Speaker 1: Evan Lengoria on the Rays and just all that craziness.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I just love that. You know.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Baseball on Sunday also had the wrap up of the
- 3:39Speaker 1: season with all the games starting at two PM. That's
- 3:41Speaker 1: with the twenty eleven season kind of I think kicked
- 3:44Speaker 1: off because that's when they did it back then. But
- 3:47Speaker 1: what words do you have to describe that game on
- 3:50Speaker 1: Monday because it was the roller coaster of all roller coasters.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it was almost like the tail of a few
- 3:58Speaker 3: different games. And I'm looking at the fangrafts, uh, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 3: win probability log, and it's just like a roller coaster.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Like it was just like maybe because.
- 4:08Speaker 3: We got like seventeenth and he's like, Nope, we're gonna win.
- 4:10Speaker 3: You're gonna win, We're gonna win, You're gonna win. Like
- 4:12Speaker 3: it's a it's it's a back and forth. But like
- 4:14Speaker 3: that's exactly what the game. You know, I'm gonna call
- 4:16Speaker 3: it a game one sixty three. I know it wasn't,
- 4:18Speaker 3: but like that's what it felt like, you know, I
- 4:20Speaker 3: think that's exactly what it had to be.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Uh.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Them the biggest loser of all was the Diamondbacks that
- 4:25Speaker 3: they had to watch that painfully and knew that whoever
- 4:28Speaker 3: won that first game was like fully calling in the
- 4:31Speaker 3: second game. There's nothing like calling up Joey LUCHESI, uh,
- 4:34Speaker 3: to try to pull one out when you didn't really
- 4:37Speaker 3: need it in the in the second game. So was
- 4:40Speaker 3: absolutely fun to watch. Really got the playoffs started right,
- 4:43Speaker 3: And I know I've been kind of a hater on
- 4:46Speaker 3: the Mets and so I had to, you know, swallow
- 4:48Speaker 3: the pill there to a degree because I really thought
- 4:51Speaker 3: the Braves were gonna come in with Chris Sale and
- 4:53Speaker 3: and dominate. And unfortunately, uh, the Chris Sale we got
- 4:57Speaker 3: triple crown this year and did not show up for
- 5:00Speaker 3: the playoffs. That is a really unfortunate thing for the
- 5:03Speaker 3: Braves because that's really what they needed to kind of
- 5:06Speaker 3: rescue a season that would I would say is arguably
- 5:08Speaker 3: has underperformed expectations there in Atlanta.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and you do have to wonder a little bit
- 5:13Speaker 1: if like the squirreliness that the Braves poled with the
- 5:17Speaker 1: hurricane and the cancelation of the games had to do
- 5:20Speaker 1: with Chris sales injury, because it was very clear that
- 5:23Speaker 1: like if it hadn't been the end of the season,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I think he would have been shelved for probably two
- 5:29Speaker 1: or three weeks because it seems like a pretty balky
- 5:31Speaker 1: back situation that he didn't make the roster for their
- 5:34Speaker 1: wild card series against San Diego. So, I mean, you
- 5:38Speaker 1: have to imagine that he'll be added to the Division
- 5:41Speaker 1: series just because you have those extra games and stretches
- 5:44Speaker 1: a little bit longer.
- 5:45Speaker 2: But that is if they make it.
- 5:48Speaker 4: They got to get there first.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And not to put a fantasy spin on this one
- 5:51Speaker 3: because it is the playoffs. We got top of the playoffs.
- 5:53Speaker 3: But you know, Chris Sale could end up being one
- 5:55Speaker 3: of the most controversial players going to drafts next year
- 5:59Speaker 3: if he ends the season not being able to pitch
- 6:02Speaker 3: in the playoffs but had the triple Crown.
- 6:04Speaker 4: From a pitching perspective, like, that's.
- 6:06Speaker 3: The injury risk by protocol. You know, back injuries for
- 6:12Speaker 3: pitchers aren't good, much better than arm injuries, at least
- 6:15Speaker 3: I know that. But that will make for a really
- 6:18Speaker 3: interesting conversation come next spring of the you know the
- 6:22Speaker 3: cy young winner, and is he gonna be worth the
- 6:25Speaker 3: injury risk? So but to your point, we'll see, if
- 6:29Speaker 3: you know, if the Brave's gonna make it, make it
- 6:31Speaker 3: by the padres here, if they can at least squeak
- 6:33Speaker 3: one out tonight.
- 6:33Speaker 4: To even up the series.
- 6:34Speaker 3: That'd be nice because so far it looks like sweep
- 6:37Speaker 3: after sweep after sweep is the pattern we're going with.
- 6:41Speaker 3: So maybe everybody just wants a little extra rest before
- 6:45Speaker 3: get into those divisional series.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, And I mean with that, how excited are
- 6:51Speaker 1: you that you don't have to watch the Houston Astros
- 6:53Speaker 1: in the ALCS this year? I am so thrilled that
- 6:56Speaker 1: the Tigers took them down, because, I mean, it's been
- 7:00Speaker 1: fun to have the Astros to hate on, but I've
- 7:02Speaker 1: just been over it for a while now that it's
- 7:05Speaker 1: it's good to have some fresh blood, and the Tigers
- 7:07Speaker 1: just worked them. Like the Astros looked totally fomixed by
- 7:11Speaker 1: everything that the Tigers through at them between the Tarik
- 7:14Speaker 1: Skouble first game, where certainly cemented that cy Young. I mean,
- 7:19Speaker 1: I know it's not a part of the voting, but
- 7:21Speaker 1: like certainly made it look like he will deserve this
- 7:25Speaker 1: cy Young that's going to be coming his way in
- 7:26Speaker 1: a month or so. Second game going with the bullpen game,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and honestly, I think in a short series, the bullpen
- 7:32Speaker 1: game isn't a bad strategy because how are you gonna
- 7:36Speaker 1: just like be able to adjust and mix and match
- 7:38Speaker 1: and it really throws things into chaos for the other side.
- 7:42Speaker 1: So big up to the Tigers. It's a fun team.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And I don't know how much further they're going to
- 7:47Speaker 1: go because the longer the series are, the less chance
- 7:51Speaker 1: I think that they can cause chaos.
- 7:53Speaker 2: But I guess we'll see. So I'll get back to.
- 7:55Speaker 1: The original question, how excited are you to not have
- 7:58Speaker 1: to watch the Astros and the Alcs this year?
- 8:01Speaker 4: I am right there with you.
- 8:02Speaker 3: No buzzer's, no drama, nothing that we have to deal
- 8:05Speaker 3: with this this time around, because it feels like there's
- 8:08Speaker 3: always drama and the Astros are involved. But it's fun
- 8:11Speaker 3: to watch some upstart teams. I was secretly pulling for
- 8:14Speaker 3: the Orioles because I felt like with the what I'm
- 8:17Speaker 3: gonna call it a bacle of the trade deadline and
- 8:19Speaker 3: roster management without the season, they were the Cinderella story
- 8:23Speaker 3: last year. You know, it felt like this was the
- 8:24Speaker 3: year that it was all going to come together and
- 8:26Speaker 3: maybe they might just have to wait another year.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Two.
- 8:28Speaker 3: They've got they've got some legs, some life on on
- 8:31Speaker 3: that roster that they'll they'll be back. But the Royals,
- 8:34Speaker 3: the Tigers, like it wasn't that long ago here talking
- 8:37Speaker 3: on these teams of leg I'm not gonna say White
- 8:39Speaker 3: Sox territory because like that's that's just disrespectful, but lower
- 8:45Speaker 3: tier territory. And it's it's exciting to see some of
- 8:49Speaker 3: those player development UH models coming through paying off and
- 8:53Speaker 3: the excitement for those towns is uh is just fantastic.
- 8:56Speaker 4: So Jee what what what's your thoughts here?
- 8:59Speaker 3: I'm actually liken the Tigers to potentially take Cleveland out
- 9:04Speaker 3: here and make it to the ALCS. I mean, am
- 9:07Speaker 3: I off my kilter because yeah, short, short series probably
- 9:10Speaker 3: better for them. But that Cleveland team, you know that
- 9:14Speaker 3: that pitching isn't as intimidating as it has been the
- 9:17Speaker 3: seasons past, and you had guys like Shane Bieber, they're healthy,
- 9:20Speaker 3: and you know, front and front of that rotation, you
- 9:22Speaker 3: got Tyanner Biby, who's going to be taking Game one.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think it's actually gonna be a
- 9:28Speaker 1: really good series in terms of I think they match
- 9:30Speaker 1: up well, and certainly that is you don't want to
- 9:34Speaker 1: be playing this Tigers team right now. They are just rolling.
- 9:36Speaker 1: They look like they're having a good time. They're playing
- 9:39Speaker 1: with house money too, Like that is not a position
- 9:42Speaker 1: you want to be on the other side of the
- 9:43Speaker 1: field for them, because there's no pressure on the Tigers
- 9:46Speaker 1: right now that everyone's young, everyone is developing, and you know,
- 9:51Speaker 1: you see a lot of good players come through for
- 9:53Speaker 1: them between like Parker Meadows getting the big homer today
- 9:59Speaker 1: and onto Ya Banya is like roping that double off
- 10:03Speaker 1: of Josh Hader. Tray Sweeney has looked really good at shortstop.
- 10:07Speaker 1: You've got just a lot of young players really coming
- 10:10Speaker 1: into their own that like the Tigers know that as
- 10:13Speaker 1: deep as they go, it's all going to be kind
- 10:15Speaker 1: of gravy at this point, and you've got to be
- 10:18Speaker 1: certainly excited for where they're going over the next few
- 10:21Speaker 1: years if you're a Detroit fan, just because those guys
- 10:24Speaker 1: are all young and it's coming together. They sold at
- 10:26Speaker 1: the deadline, like it's so crazy that, like, you know,
- 10:29Speaker 1: if they had rolled into this playoffs with Kanaha and Flarity,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and I mean they even traded like Carson Kelly, their
- 10:36Speaker 1: backup catcher to Texas because they were just like taking
- 10:40Speaker 1: stuff back to be able to prepare for twenty twenty
- 10:42Speaker 1: five and they're rolling.
- 10:43Speaker 3: There's poetic justice coming somewhere in a Dodgers Tigers World
- 10:47Speaker 3: Series where Flarerty's pitching against the Tigers.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Like you know, you know it's coming there.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I mean, and if you look at the ALE teams,
- 10:54Speaker 3: like they all have an ace, I would argue, and
- 10:58Speaker 3: the rest of those rotations are pretty pretty thin, and
- 11:01Speaker 3: so it's gonna be different. I mean, it feels like
- 11:04Speaker 3: the playoffs for a number of years now, it's been
- 11:06Speaker 3: like which team has a good one two, three punch
- 11:09Speaker 3: and let's use some short rest to get it done.
- 11:11Speaker 3: To a three man rotation, maybe even a two man rotation.
- 11:15Speaker 3: There's not a single team in the AL in my opinion,
- 11:19Speaker 3: that has that true one two punch. I mean, you
- 11:21Speaker 3: can maybe squint and say that for the Yankees, but
- 11:24Speaker 3: like it's it's not there for most of these teams,
- 11:28Speaker 3: and number of them only carrying like three gonna carry
- 11:30Speaker 3: like three starters into those series and go bullpen game.
- 11:33Speaker 3: So that's that's gonna be a really interesting and dynamic
- 11:36Speaker 3: that the rest of these team you know, Gida the
- 11:38Speaker 3: World Series of the NL team, there's a little more
- 11:40Speaker 3: depth on some of those staffs.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Yeah, certainly, and so in the AL side, Yeah, we've
- 11:45Speaker 1: got the three Ale Central teams, just like everybody predicted.
- 11:48Speaker 1: With the Yankees left, so got the Guardians, the Royals,
- 11:52Speaker 1: who honestly we kind of skimmed over the Orioles talk
- 11:56Speaker 1: too that like it is I think a very important
- 12:00Speaker 1: off season for the Orioles because this is now two
- 12:02Speaker 1: straight years of like we've we kind of like commented
- 12:06Speaker 1: on this even at the beginning of the year with
- 12:08Speaker 1: the Orioles just not enough pitching that I thought that
- 12:10Speaker 1: could be like World Series favorites, and it certainly showed
- 12:13Speaker 1: its head again as well as the Bats just going
- 12:15Speaker 1: silent that they're gonna have to do something in the
- 12:18Speaker 1: off season because if they don't, they're in pretty I
- 12:22Speaker 1: think bad shape to just waste a lot of great
- 12:25Speaker 1: potential for this franchise when, especially this year, it was
- 12:28Speaker 1: sitting right there for them, and would they do at
- 12:30Speaker 1: the deadline picked up Trevor Rodgers when you could have
- 12:32Speaker 1: gotten the Jack Flaherty, you could have gotten the Eric Fetti,
- 12:35Speaker 1: you could have gotten somebody like that, and the Orioles
- 12:39Speaker 1: skimped out, And that's not the way you want to
- 12:41Speaker 1: see this kind of fizzle out.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Yeah, they are going to regret that one for years
- 12:46Speaker 3: to come, that's for sure.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Yeah, But so with the Yankees and those three Al
- 12:50Speaker 1: Central teams. It is also like the Yankees have no
- 12:53Speaker 1: excuse at this point, right, Like I think that the
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yankees don't make the World Series, Aaron Boone's probably gone
- 13:00Speaker 1: on because like this couldn't have lined up any better
- 13:03Speaker 1: for the Yankees. That they're clearly better than those other
- 13:05Speaker 1: three teams on paper, it's just the weather or not
- 13:08Speaker 1: they can actually execute.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I go both ways and that I think, you know,
- 13:12Speaker 3: I've looked at Yankees roster and I feel like they
- 13:14Speaker 3: have still overperformed to a degree. The pitchings have just
- 13:17Speaker 3: been not that great. Now, the lineup's okay, they get
- 13:21Speaker 3: this that Sodo guy and Judge guy. I hear they're
- 13:24Speaker 3: pretty decent, and so they've carried like from an offense perspective,
- 13:29Speaker 3: So I do think it'll Anything short of the World
- 13:31Speaker 3: Series is definitely a disappointment.
- 13:34Speaker 4: But I I if I'm.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Going, I'm taking the field right now. I think I'm
- 13:37Speaker 3: taking the field rather than taking the Yankees.
- 13:40Speaker 4: In the in the in the ale here.
- 13:42Speaker 3: And like I said, I I kind of got my
- 13:45Speaker 3: eyes on the Tigers. I think they're gonna be interesting
- 13:47Speaker 3: and doesn't be wrong. The Royals they're just scrappy, which
- 13:51Speaker 3: has always been the worlds whenever they're in the playoffs.
- 13:52Speaker 4: They're just kind of scrappy.
- 13:54Speaker 3: And Cole Reagan's has looked absolutely dominant. Yes, and I
- 13:59Speaker 3: don't see that that train slowing down at all. And
- 14:01Speaker 3: he seems like the kind of guy that has no
- 14:03Speaker 3: problem taking on three day's rest and getting three starts,
- 14:07Speaker 3: you know, in an ALCS type scenario. So it'll be fun,
- 14:11Speaker 3: fun to watch the rest of that.
- 14:13Speaker 4: We still got a ways.
- 14:14Speaker 3: To go from a development on the on the NL
- 14:16Speaker 3: side to see who's actually making it through. But unfortunately
- 14:21Speaker 3: for the Braves, the Padres are gonna make it pretty
- 14:24Speaker 3: pretty likely a sweep there as they're already threatening what
- 14:28Speaker 3: we just make this podcast.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the Padres trounce them in game one, and I
- 14:33Speaker 1: will say that Michael King looked untouchable in that game.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I mean the sinkers that he was throwing, the run
- 14:40Speaker 1: that he was getting on them, the armslot that he
- 14:43Speaker 1: was throwing, the sinker and the slider out of like
- 14:46Speaker 1: I don't it's I don't know how anybody hits it,
- 14:49Speaker 1: because like it was like some voodoo stuff on those
- 14:54Speaker 1: change ups and sinkers that he was throwing. It was electric,
- 14:56Speaker 1: especially like when you add in the kind of post
- 14:59Speaker 1: these and bumped to just the overall velocity, it made
- 15:03Speaker 1: all that stuff move. And I mean, I think right
- 15:06Speaker 1: now the Padres are probably the favorites, if maybe the
- 15:10Speaker 1: Phillies are right there too, Like I think they're probably
- 15:13Speaker 1: the two strongest teams that are in the field right now.
- 15:15Speaker 1: But for the Padres, it's also looking like a pretty
- 15:19Speaker 1: nice lineup in terms of, you know, you got these
- 15:21Speaker 1: exhausted braves coming out. They had to fly all the
- 15:24Speaker 1: way to the West Coast to be able to play
- 15:26Speaker 1: you after playing a double header on Monday. The squad
- 15:30Speaker 1: is healthy, like everybody's in place. You've got all the
- 15:35Speaker 1: frontline starters. They don't have to worry about having not
- 15:38Speaker 1: enough starters. If anything, they have too many starters and
- 15:41Speaker 1: you're gonna have to find spots to kind of like
- 15:44Speaker 1: play you Darvish down the stretch for the Padres. And
- 15:48Speaker 1: I like getting stars in the lineup too. I think
- 15:50Speaker 1: that's why, Like it was kind of impressive to see
- 15:53Speaker 1: the Tigers, especially take down the Astros, given that, like
- 15:56Speaker 1: I do think in the playoffs. This is I think
- 16:00Speaker 1: what has been the Brewers problem too, is that if
- 16:02Speaker 1: you don't have a star player or two to like
- 16:04Speaker 1: really carry you it, I think you've run into some struggles.
- 16:07Speaker 1: But Padres obviously have Machado Tatis, even a Rise and
- 16:12Speaker 1: Bogarts and my boy, Kya Yoshioka, so I'm not too
- 16:16Speaker 1: worried about them, but I'm fascinated. I guess I shouldn't
- 16:20Speaker 1: put the Mets through yet, but it does look like
- 16:23Speaker 1: they're gonna beat the Brewers again tonight, and Mets Phillies
- 16:29Speaker 1: for the Division series. I'm really looking forward to that
- 16:32Speaker 1: one because it is gonna be feisty.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you're absolutely right, I mean just across the board
- 16:38Speaker 3: because that the Padres do pull out here against the
- 16:39Speaker 3: Braids as well. You know, you got the California series there,
- 16:42Speaker 3: you got the Mets, the Phillies generally good blow between
- 16:45Speaker 3: those two teams. So it's gonna be really really entertaining
- 16:48Speaker 3: there across the board. So you know, the only thing
- 16:51Speaker 3: you have to say is the Yankees and they really
- 16:53Speaker 3: have to regret that Michael King trade, right, it wasn't
- 16:55Speaker 3: the one soda trader is Michael King trade.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Trade.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I'm getting that one wrong.
- 17:03Speaker 2: What's crazy?
- 17:04Speaker 1: We haven't even talked about the team that won the
- 17:06Speaker 1: most regular season games, the ninety eight win Los Angeles Dodgers,
- 17:10Speaker 1: because I think everyone's discounting the pitching because like it
- 17:16Speaker 1: just isn't there. But like, obviously they can bash their
- 17:19Speaker 1: way through the playoffs. I think they have the ability
- 17:23Speaker 1: to mitch a mix and match pitching to get the
- 17:27Speaker 1: right matchups they want and do lots of bullpen games
- 17:30Speaker 1: and stuff. But do you think it's enough to be
- 17:32Speaker 1: able to support that lineup in LA for I mean,
- 17:35Speaker 1: that's gonna be another crazy series if I mean, I
- 17:38Speaker 1: guess again we're sending the Padres through before they actually
- 17:41Speaker 1: pull it off. But Padres Dodgers is going to be another,
- 17:45Speaker 1: like I said, feisty series, as those teams have no
- 17:49Speaker 1: love for each other and it's going to be quite
- 17:51Speaker 1: the battle. But I mean, are we just totally discounting
- 17:55Speaker 1: the Dodgers because we've gotten so used to them or
- 17:59Speaker 1: just aren't counting on them because of that pitching? But
- 18:03Speaker 1: do you think they could still steamroll through to the
- 18:06Speaker 1: World Series here?
- 18:07Speaker 4: I mean, it all comes down to the hitting like
- 18:09Speaker 4: that to me. That's what it comes down to.
- 18:10Speaker 3: And if you look at their the last month of
- 18:13Speaker 3: the schedule here, like there's not like a single close game.
- 18:16Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, there's okay, I argue there's like two
- 18:18Speaker 3: or three, but like it's always been ten to one, two, nine,
- 18:22Speaker 3: like it's and they lose big or win big like it's.
- 18:24Speaker 3: It's it comes down is that offense gonna play because
- 18:27Speaker 3: the pitching has not necessarily held up as well as
- 18:32Speaker 3: it could. So I worry about them in a longer
- 18:34Speaker 3: series because if they, you know, go up against some
- 18:36Speaker 3: good pitching, it's gonna it could neutralize that and it
- 18:40Speaker 3: it's all's gonna take as a runner two on the
- 18:41Speaker 3: other side, uh to make it happen. So I think
- 18:45Speaker 3: as the offense goes, the Dodgers go. If they're gonna
- 18:47Speaker 3: score runs, they're gonna be tough to beat. But I
- 18:50Speaker 3: don't think there's dominant. They've been in the past few
- 18:52Speaker 3: years where they looked good on both sides of the ball.
- 18:55Speaker 3: And that's what's scary, right If if if everything clicks,
- 18:59Speaker 3: you're unbeatable. If one thing clicks, you're still really good.
- 19:02Speaker 3: If nothing clicks, you go home. I think they're not
- 19:05Speaker 3: in the territory of having multiple things click. It's they
- 19:08Speaker 3: they've got the concord of the offense right now, and
- 19:10Speaker 3: the pitching it's it's it looks good on paper, it
- 19:15Speaker 3: just has not performed as well as you'd like.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think that there is maybe a
- 19:20Speaker 1: path for them, but it's going to require a lot
- 19:24Speaker 1: of getting the best out of like Ryan Brazier, Anthony Banda,
- 19:28Speaker 1: Joe Kelly, Alex Vessia, which can happen. You know, bullpens
- 19:32Speaker 1: can click and they can really gel together. But that's
- 19:35Speaker 1: a pretty volatile group of four guys there. But they're
- 19:38Speaker 1: gonna have to be crucial for the Dodgers because they
- 19:41Speaker 1: will be pitching those fourth, fifth, sixth innings. As you
- 19:44Speaker 1: get the bridge from you know, especially like if Walker
- 19:47Speaker 1: Buehler gets knocked out early or Landon Nak does too,
- 19:51Speaker 1: Like you've got to be able to bridge to the
- 19:52Speaker 1: back end of that bullpen, and that's where it's going
- 19:54Speaker 1: to get dicey for the Dodgers. But I mean, I
- 19:57Speaker 1: think they're still going to be right in the mix
- 20:01Speaker 1: for everything. And then who knows, if Kershaw can come
- 20:04Speaker 1: back and get going, you might be able to see
- 20:07Speaker 1: him in the NLCS here.
- 20:09Speaker 4: There's a lot of question marks. We'll see where we
- 20:10Speaker 4: end up.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yes, I'm excited. It's gonna be a great playoffs. So
- 20:14Speaker 1: glad that we have two upsets. Glad that we didn't
- 20:16Speaker 1: fill out brackets like we did last year, because I
- 20:18Speaker 1: would be in a world of mess.
- 20:22Speaker 4: No comment, no comments.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Okay, Well, we still have some news that came through
- 20:27Speaker 1: this week, and it's a little bit more on the
- 20:30Speaker 1: transactional front office side in terms of movement all round.
- 20:34Speaker 1: We're gonna start with our favorite, the Saint Louis Cardinals
- 20:37Speaker 1: announcing that they're going to essentially have a dead man
- 20:40Speaker 1: walking season from John Mozlak in twenty twenty five, with
- 20:44Speaker 1: Heim Bloom taking over in twenty twenty six. So Bloom's
- 20:47Speaker 1: been around now for a bit as a consultant. I
- 20:51Speaker 1: don't know why they don't do the full transition, like
- 20:56Speaker 1: especially given that Bloom has been around now for a
- 20:58Speaker 1: bit and it's this is obviously like a bit of
- 21:01Speaker 1: a monumental step for the Cardinals, because I can't really
- 21:04Speaker 1: remember the last time that they've made front office moves
- 21:07Speaker 1: that weren't insular. So to bring somebody in from the outside,
- 21:11Speaker 1: like Bloom is a step in the right direction. I
- 21:14Speaker 1: think of what this team needs, and they're in terms
- 21:16Speaker 1: of the kick in the pants to like get some
- 21:19Speaker 1: outside perspectives.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And get that going.
- 21:21Speaker 1: But at this point, are they just admitting that twenty
- 21:25Speaker 1: twenty five's a totally lost in bump season. I mean,
- 21:27Speaker 1: they already announced that they're going to be shopping Sunny
- 21:30Speaker 1: Gray this offseason. I have to think that if Gray leaves,
- 21:34Speaker 1: Arnatto's got to request a trade out because it's going
- 21:37Speaker 1: to be falling apart in terms of this just being
- 21:40Speaker 1: a little bit of like a let's see who's good
- 21:42Speaker 1: in twenty five and will be a part of the future.
- 21:45Speaker 1: But what do you make of all this? Because I
- 21:48Speaker 1: think it's pretty chaotic and not the greatest move, Like
- 21:52Speaker 1: I why not just rip the band aid off now?
- 21:54Speaker 1: But is there something that maybe hind Bloom needs to
- 21:56Speaker 1: learn from John Lezaylak as they move forward into twenty five.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I think it's commitment is the thing he needs to
- 22:04Speaker 3: learn it, which is like just pick a direction and
- 22:07Speaker 3: go stop leaving one foot in the circle, like and
- 22:11Speaker 3: that's been the cardinal way, right, Let's let's let's own it.
- 22:13Speaker 3: That's been the cardinal way when their player development was working.
- 22:16Speaker 4: They were always in it.
- 22:17Speaker 3: They just need to kind of if they got a
- 22:19Speaker 3: lucky season things went well, they could steamroll in the playoffs,
- 22:21Speaker 3: like that's how they won their championships. But now it's like,
- 22:25Speaker 3: we're gonna half sell. Like to your point, you said
- 22:28Speaker 3: that they announced they're gonna chop Sunny Gray.
- 22:30Speaker 4: They didn't really quite say it. They implied it.
- 22:33Speaker 3: They the Beat writers reported it, but like nobody ever
- 22:36Speaker 3: came out right and said that Funny Gray's on the block,
- 22:38Speaker 3: And like, I worry that that's where they're gonna land,
- 22:40Speaker 3: and they're gonna like instead of just going full out,
- 22:42Speaker 3: like I mean they said Goldsmith's not coming back. But like,
- 22:47Speaker 3: if you're gonna do this, go do it right and
- 22:49Speaker 3: actually sell, actually move the pieces. And that hurts a
- 22:54Speaker 3: little bit as a fan. But like Ryan Helsley should
- 22:57Speaker 3: be gone. Sunny Gray should be gone, Aaron, Like, I mean,
- 23:01Speaker 3: he's actually like you got a lot of money still
- 23:03Speaker 3: still sat the conference or from the Rockies, from whatever
- 23:05Speaker 3: the heck they were thinking.
- 23:07Speaker 4: But you know, he should be he should be gone
- 23:08Speaker 4: because there's still.
- 23:09Speaker 3: A lot of value in Aeronatto even with the contract
- 23:12Speaker 3: he has because the main value the defense he played.
- 23:14Speaker 3: He was fantastic back on the defensive spectrum, even though
- 23:18Speaker 3: last year or so it's been a little bit questionable.
- 23:19Speaker 4: He looked really good.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Contraras that you know, yeah, he's been banged up, but
- 23:24Speaker 3: like when he was healthy, he was hitting unbelievably like that,
- 23:28Speaker 3: they have big trade pieces that they should capitalize on him.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I just I'm not sure that they're gonna be able
- 23:34Speaker 3: to do it. It's just they would never fully were in.
- 23:38Speaker 3: I don't think they know how to fully be out.
- 23:40Speaker 3: But I think that's the best move if they can
- 23:42Speaker 3: actually commit to it. Give these young guys. They have
- 23:45Speaker 3: a lot of young talent that they need to give
- 23:48Speaker 3: a chance and then fill in around it.
- 23:50Speaker 4: And I mean they.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Could be pretty pretty gushed an interesting but I think
- 23:57Speaker 3: to your point, at the end of the day, I
- 23:59Speaker 3: don't know why their whole not in Josey lock like
- 24:01Speaker 3: just cut the cord, make it go away and start fresh.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I mean they they also more or less uh demoted
- 24:08Speaker 3: Michael gersh there from a GM perspective, but like didn't
- 24:12Speaker 3: they just changed his title to VP of Special Projects,
- 24:16Speaker 3: Like there's nothing worse than being said, like you're you're
- 24:20Speaker 3: the vice president of like whatever, we feel like wasted
- 24:24Speaker 3: your time.
- 24:24Speaker 2: On, not even like a real like department or anything.
- 24:30Speaker 3: You know, he has like one guy reporting to him now,
- 24:32Speaker 3: like that's it's it's like the intern type thing. So yeah,
- 24:36Speaker 3: this this unfortunately reeks of, uh the de wint ownership
- 24:40Speaker 3: and the way that they kind of go about things,
- 24:42Speaker 3: never wanting to fully go one way or the other. So, uh,
- 24:46Speaker 3: I could go on and on on this one, but
- 24:48Speaker 3: I think we're in the same boat here.
- 24:49Speaker 4: I'll believe it when I see it.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think this is also a situation
- 24:54Speaker 1: where it's a copycat league where you know, this especially
- 24:58Speaker 1: I think has been the I mean even I mean
- 25:02Speaker 1: probably since the beginning of time. But the ones that
- 25:05Speaker 1: really stand out in my view are you know, the
- 25:07Speaker 1: Moneyball A's and then after that the like Royals that
- 25:10Speaker 1: won that World Series in twenty fifteen. In terms of
- 25:13Speaker 1: like how team construction can really sway based on who wins.
- 25:17Speaker 1: If the Tigers go deep, the Cardinals are set up
- 25:20Speaker 1: pretty well to do a lot of like what the
- 25:22Speaker 1: Tigers did in the second half, where you just kind
- 25:25Speaker 1: of let like your high draft picks go out there
- 25:27Speaker 1: and run and see what they can do. And I
- 25:30Speaker 1: wonder if that does maybe give them a little bit
- 25:32Speaker 1: of light, because I think that's been part of the
- 25:35Speaker 1: problem in Saint Louis is that it's almost two clogged
- 25:38Speaker 1: up and like they're too wetted to their guys that
- 25:42Speaker 1: they've brought through development, and just like you need somebody
- 25:45Speaker 1: who either is willing to cut bait with the veterans
- 25:49Speaker 1: and clear out the space with the young guys or
- 25:51Speaker 1: cut bait on the young guys like aj Preller and
- 25:53Speaker 1: bring in upgraded talent, and so like, yeah, you can't
- 25:56Speaker 1: kind of sit in this middle land where the Cardinals have.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they have a starting rotation, like if
- 26:03Speaker 3: they just want to go to it right and they
- 26:05Speaker 3: have a ton of young talent there that you just
- 26:08Speaker 3: kind of see what what happens. But you know, we talked,
- 26:10Speaker 3: We've talked a lot about Michael McGreevy. There's Zach Thompson's
- 26:12Speaker 3: Matthew Lebator, you got t Kins in the miners, you
- 26:16Speaker 3: got why am I forgetting Quinn's name Quin Matthews. I
- 26:21Speaker 3: want to say Quinn Chandler, but that was a Chandler
- 26:23Speaker 3: over in Pittsburgh. We're getting all confused now, but like
- 26:27Speaker 3: they have a full young rotation that they can run
- 26:30Speaker 3: out there and see how it works. They've got a
- 26:32Speaker 3: decent young bullpen like they they can go there and
- 26:36Speaker 3: they like it''s not unreasonable to see them as five
- 26:38Speaker 3: hundred team next year without all those big names.
- 26:42Speaker 4: It's just like it's just that youth movement.
- 26:44Speaker 3: And if you trade away Sonny Gray and Aaron not
- 26:47Speaker 3: Contraire and things like that, none of them outside of Aarononder,
- 26:50Speaker 3: like their contracts are actually real fully short.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Sonny Gray on the trade block.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I know his deal was kind of backloaded, but any
- 26:57Speaker 3: team getting like two years of him is just out
- 27:00Speaker 3: thrilled because like prime of his career, they're gonna pay
- 27:03Speaker 3: up for that. And so you're bringing again young talent
- 27:06Speaker 3: that you can utilize and let run. So if they
- 27:09Speaker 3: do this right, they could be really dangerous in just
- 27:12Speaker 3: another year or two. I just don't know if they're to.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Do it right. I think I'm there with you.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's move on to our other pobo that
- 27:21Speaker 1: got kind of like shuffled around. I guess Mosaic is
- 27:23Speaker 1: still there, so he didn't get fired, but far Hans
- 27:26Speaker 1: Aedi and San Francisco sure did get fired. And this
- 27:31Speaker 1: one is stranger than the Cardinals one. Like the Cardinals
- 27:33Speaker 1: one is just like it's gonna go down, maybe in
- 27:36Speaker 1: like business manage, but one on one of like how
- 27:38Speaker 1: not to do transitions. This one might also go down
- 27:42Speaker 1: in San Francisco as Buster Posey is coming in taking
- 27:45Speaker 1: over far Hans IED's job as Pobo and Posey worked
- 27:52Speaker 1: on that Matt Chapman extension with the ownership, so he's
- 27:56Speaker 1: had some sort of like through way to communicating with
- 28:01Speaker 1: that ownership directly over the past few months and has
- 28:04Speaker 1: obviously been planning this seed to take over and run
- 28:08Speaker 1: things in San Francisco. But there's no way this is
- 28:12Speaker 1: gonna work well right like he has, Posey has no
- 28:15Speaker 1: experience in any front office or any sort of like
- 28:19Speaker 1: league wide like office. He's only played for one team,
- 28:24Speaker 1: so it's not like he's been around a lot. So
- 28:27Speaker 1: the like comparison I've been seeing this move to a
- 28:30Speaker 1: lot is actually Chris Young coming in in Texas. But
- 28:33Speaker 1: Chris Young was on a lot of teams. Chris Young
- 28:37Speaker 1: was in the MLB like executive office is for a bit.
- 28:40Speaker 1: He was in that Rangers front office for a little bit.
- 28:44Speaker 1: He didn't go like straight from retirement doing nothing into
- 28:49Speaker 1: that role like he grew into it. He was always
- 28:51Speaker 1: like a bit of more of like a I would say,
- 28:55Speaker 1: like cerebral player too coming through. You know, he was
- 28:58Speaker 1: an IVY League grad, which you know, all of these
- 29:00Speaker 1: front offices love bringing in Posey doesn't have any of that,
- 29:03Speaker 1: and so it looked it seems like he's just coming
- 29:06Speaker 1: straight out of like hanging out and taking care of
- 29:09Speaker 1: his kids, which he wanted to do in retirement, and
- 29:11Speaker 1: walking into this job.
- 29:14Speaker 2: It wreaks a lot of like what.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Houston's been kind of shifting towards in terms of like
- 29:18Speaker 1: having Jeff Bagwell be like a part of their front
- 29:21Speaker 1: office decisions. And obviously we've seen how that's worked out
- 29:23Speaker 1: for them going into these playoffs. What do you think
- 29:27Speaker 1: this does for the Giants going forward with Buster Posey?
- 29:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this, I think it's one hundred percent
- 29:33Speaker 3: chance that this is either amazing or terrible.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Except right, it's one of the other.
- 29:37Speaker 3: It's one of the other because, like if you look
- 29:39Speaker 3: at it, because the Giants have been a roller coaster team,
- 29:44Speaker 3: they have been great or bad like on and off,
- 29:47Speaker 3: on and off, and they've just not found these stability.
- 29:50Speaker 3: And there's nobody in baseball that knows that team better
- 29:54Speaker 3: than Buster Posey, and nobody that probably in the short
- 29:57Speaker 3: term that probably could evaluate talent like a Buster Posey
- 30:01Speaker 3: because he knows the league from from playing in it,
- 30:05Speaker 3: but from a long term perspective, evaluating the miners and
- 30:10Speaker 3: the business of the game things.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Like that, Like Man building out of front office.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Really out front office, like all those like he doesn't
- 30:17Speaker 3: have those connections. There's a lot of that that's gonna
- 30:19Speaker 3: be Like, is that gonna gonna work? Like Like I said,
- 30:23Speaker 3: I think that the he's gonna they're gonna get the
- 30:26Speaker 3: most out of their players because him and Bochie, like
- 30:28Speaker 3: they're gonna be so connected, like and there's gonna be
- 30:31Speaker 3: a true translation of the moves made by the front
- 30:33Speaker 3: office to the product on the field. It's gonna make
- 30:36Speaker 3: a heck of a lot of sense. So they're gonna
- 30:38Speaker 3: get a lot out of the players that they bring
- 30:39Speaker 3: in and the way that they operate. I just the
- 30:42Speaker 3: sustainability of it is just like Man, there's just a
- 30:46Speaker 3: lot of question marks and it is a bold, bold move,
- 30:51Speaker 3: but Hey, what you had wasn't working, and I guess
- 30:55Speaker 3: we al should have seen the writing on the wall
- 30:56Speaker 3: to your point with the Chapman deal, which I'm also
- 30:58Speaker 3: was not a big fan of the first places.
- 31:00Speaker 4: That's a lot to.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Commit on a long term there in Chapman, But you know, hey,
- 31:07Speaker 3: go big, go home. I guess you're watching Adriapreller cross
- 31:10Speaker 3: and be like, well, we can bring that crazy guy
- 31:12Speaker 3: in the Why can't we do something with a Buster Posey.
- 31:16Speaker 3: At least they're gonna sell get some jersey sales out
- 31:18Speaker 3: of Posy, I guess, so that'll that'll be fun.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly in the name recognition and everything that, Like, yeah,
- 31:25Speaker 1: I think you're you're dead on, Like this can either
- 31:27Speaker 1: turn out like Chris Young, which I don't know if
- 31:30Speaker 1: it will, but otherwise I think it's headed like Dave
- 31:33Speaker 1: Stewart in Arizona when he's traded away like Dansby Swanson
- 31:36Speaker 1: and like it was bad. So I could see something
- 31:40Speaker 1: like that happening here in San Francisco going for it.
- 31:42Speaker 1: We'll keep our eye on it this offseason, all right.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Next piece of news we have is Skip Shoemaker is
- 31:48Speaker 1: officially out in Miami he's been let go. It's been
- 31:51Speaker 1: kind of telegraphed for a while. They they've also been
- 31:54Speaker 1: breaking news throughout the day that the Marlins are just
- 31:58Speaker 1: cleaning all like all the way through like burning it
- 32:02Speaker 1: all the way down to the studs in terms of
- 32:04Speaker 1: getting everybody out of there from the old regime and
- 32:08Speaker 1: just like totally overhauling everything. So it should also be
- 32:12Speaker 1: interesting because mel Stotdemeyer Junior, who was the pitching coach there,
- 32:15Speaker 1: like was a good pitching coach, Like he harnessed Cindy
- 32:19Speaker 1: al Contra stuff. Pabo Lopez really kind of helped everybody
- 32:24Speaker 1: turn the corner in that pitching factory down to Miami.
- 32:26Speaker 1: So I guess the big question here is where do
- 32:29Speaker 1: you see Skip landing in the off season, because he's
- 32:34Speaker 1: going to be the hottest commodity I think in the
- 32:36Speaker 1: managerial market out there.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I maybe I'm just short sighted here.
- 32:41Speaker 3: I have to think to leave in the clubhouse is
- 32:43Speaker 3: the Reds. I think with that exciting offense, the young
- 32:48Speaker 3: talent there, the NL central that Skip knows all too well, Like,
- 32:52Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of interest there. You know,
- 32:57Speaker 3: maybe I may have been selfishly hoping that Olive Marmal
- 33:00Speaker 3: would have been taken a hike, and then I would
- 33:02Speaker 3: have had a much different answer for you. But yeah,
- 33:05Speaker 3: I think you know skip Is. I think he is
- 33:08Speaker 3: a great manager, I really do. I don't think it's
- 33:10Speaker 3: any reflection of him. I think it's anything alse a
- 33:13Speaker 3: reflection of the Marlin's ownership. Like, man, if there's an
- 33:16Speaker 3: ownership group that I've got questions about, it's it's that
- 33:18Speaker 3: one over in Miami because they cannot make up their
- 33:21Speaker 3: mind of what they want to do. They've pushed big
- 33:24Speaker 3: name after a big name, after higher outs and around
- 33:26Speaker 3: and they you know, I don't think they're gonna get
- 33:29Speaker 3: any good hire anytime soon because that is just a
- 33:32Speaker 3: dire situation there. But yeah, if it was me, I said,
- 33:35Speaker 3: I think I'm picking the Reds. He's going to be
- 33:38Speaker 3: definitely highly sought after and he'll kind of I think
- 33:42Speaker 3: he'll get his pick, give his pick of rolls. Unfortunately
- 33:46Speaker 3: for you, I don't think he's gonna go to the
- 33:48Speaker 3: White Sox. But hey, I've been running before.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I don't who would want to go as part of it,
- 33:53Speaker 1: Like I think Seizemorek keeps the job because like, who's
- 33:55Speaker 1: coming into the Chicago White Sox and seeing all the
- 34:00Speaker 1: especially the post mortem pieces that have just buried the organization.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Honestly to the tune of like what we've been talking
- 34:07Speaker 1: about all summer that it's great to see kind of
- 34:10Speaker 1: like everybody dogging on Jerry and everybody else there, but
- 34:13Speaker 1: there's no way anybody wants that job when you've got
- 34:16Speaker 1: another job that's an option.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Yeah, so hey, I love Skipp hoping the best room here.
- 34:23Speaker 4: We'll see kind of where.
- 34:25Speaker 3: He shakes out, but I'm not gonna be shocked at
- 34:29Speaker 3: all if the Reds pick him off, and I think
- 34:31Speaker 3: they absolutely should.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yeah, or I mean, honestly, I think if, like I said,
- 34:36Speaker 1: if the Yankees don't make the World Series, might be
- 34:39Speaker 1: in the Bronx this time next year.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Okay, well I did bury the lead.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I didn't ever introduce what we're talking about this week,
- 34:47Speaker 1: and that is the September Player of the Month. It
- 34:49Speaker 1: is the first pod of the next month. So we've
- 34:52Speaker 1: got our last set of players from that awards in
- 34:57Speaker 1: the last month of the year. So we're going to
- 35:00Speaker 1: be doing that after we take the break, but we've
- 35:03Speaker 1: got a decent amount of card news to cover first
- 35:05Speaker 1: before we take that break. So the first one is
- 35:08Speaker 1: that the show Hey Otani, fifty to fifty card set
- 35:12Speaker 1: has been announced. So this is like a special fifty
- 35:15Speaker 1: to fifty commemorative card set for Otani that if you
- 35:19Speaker 1: want to see a good indication of.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Like where tops is going.
- 35:24Speaker 1: And it's kind of this loot box culture that we've
- 35:26Speaker 1: been talking about. And honestly, this feels a lot like
- 35:29Speaker 1: MLB the show in terms of like the odds of
- 35:31Speaker 1: you pulling anything out of these these packs and everything.
- 35:35Speaker 2: They sold out, Like I actually.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Checked this morning, they still have individual packs at twenty
- 35:39Speaker 1: five dollars a pack for a single pack of cards
- 35:43Speaker 1: that I think it's let me see how many cards
- 35:46Speaker 1: were just five cards, so you're playing five dollars card.
- 35:50Speaker 1: But you could also get the ten card box for
- 35:52Speaker 1: twenty four dollars save a whole you know, dollar dollar pack. Yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 1: that's how math works if you had done the whole
- 36:00Speaker 1: ten pack. This stuff sold out fast and it's not
- 36:03Speaker 1: even honestly got anything that great in my mind. So
- 36:07Speaker 1: the way that the card is card set is set
- 36:09Speaker 1: up is it's one hundred card set, fifty cards for
- 36:12Speaker 1: each you know, for the homers fifty cards for stolen bases, parallels, autographs,
- 36:19Speaker 1: none of that is guaranteed though, Like that two hundred
- 36:21Speaker 1: and fifty dollars box that you might be buying might
- 36:24Speaker 1: not have any parallels or any autos in it, obviously,
- 36:27Speaker 1: like you would pay more than two hundred and fifty dollars
- 36:29Speaker 1: for a Sho Heo Tani auto anyway. So like there
- 36:33Speaker 1: is that lottery ticket aspect to this, but obviously compared
- 36:38Speaker 1: to what we had with that tops Now card, where
- 36:41Speaker 1: you were getting a historic card, like a very momentous card,
- 36:45Speaker 1: even if it was twelve dollars, like it's only twelve
- 36:48Speaker 1: dollars and it's you know, the one card that you
- 36:51Speaker 1: know you're going to keep. These like fifty to fifty
- 36:54Speaker 1: cards are just like almost immediate dollar box cards.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Like I just don't see.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Maybe I'm underestimating the overall like Otani collector market out there,
- 37:03Speaker 1: but I just don't see how like a separate print
- 37:07Speaker 1: run set like this real really hold a ton of
- 37:10Speaker 1: value out in the market. On top of it, Also,
- 37:15Speaker 1: I sometimes when I have ordered like some of these
- 37:17Speaker 1: special sets, especially when it's like World Series Winners or
- 37:20Speaker 1: like other tops Now cards or like the Road to
- 37:24Speaker 1: Opening Day cards.
- 37:25Speaker 2: I can tell you that the quality on them is
- 37:28Speaker 2: not great, so.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Like certainly they had to put it into the middle
- 37:33Speaker 1: of their other schedules for everything to be able to
- 37:35Speaker 1: pump this set out. But what an interesting set, And
- 37:39Speaker 1: I wanted to get your thoughts on it because for me,
- 37:42Speaker 1: it's just like confounding that obviously it's sold out, but
- 37:46Speaker 1: it's gonna be interesting to see where all these cards go.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it is a compounding set. I am staying
- 37:52Speaker 3: far away from from from this set. It is has
- 37:57Speaker 3: all the hallmarks of overproduced and and not a lot
- 38:00Speaker 3: of collectible value. Like, yeah, you gonna have folks that
- 38:03Speaker 3: want to collect all fifty of each run, but at
- 38:08Speaker 3: the end of the day, it's gonna be.
- 38:11Speaker 4: It's definitely not gonna hold much value where I'm going
- 38:15Speaker 4: for the price that you're paying.
- 38:17Speaker 3: And there there was a product years ago, and I'm
- 38:20Speaker 3: not gonna get it exactly right. It was like Greatest
- 38:22Speaker 3: Moments or something like that, where they it was a
- 38:25Speaker 3: similar thing where you could you could buy all of
- 38:27Speaker 3: them and you had it was like Milestones or something
- 38:30Speaker 3: like that. And I have a few of these cards
- 38:31Speaker 3: and you could like all these one of ones and
- 38:34Speaker 3: five to fives and things like that of all the
- 38:35Speaker 3: greatest players, and they're like one of ones for five
- 38:38Speaker 3: dollars now, like it was absolutely dreadful. I'll have to
- 38:42Speaker 3: look it up and we can add to the show notes.
- 38:44Speaker 3: But this has all the hallmarks of the same thing
- 38:47Speaker 3: of like we're talking about overproduction, Like this is just
- 38:50Speaker 3: like a cash grab overproduction. You're running literally fifty cards,
- 38:54Speaker 3: fifty cards, a few simple parallels because whatever color sheets
- 38:58Speaker 3: you had laying in the back back uh back office there,
- 39:01Speaker 3: and then you know they're they're bringing a few massive hits.
- 39:06Speaker 3: It worked well for them with the tops Now card
- 39:08Speaker 3: where they brought in their seven million dollar bounty or
- 39:11Speaker 3: whatever that was, with all the auto chase, But this one,
- 39:16Speaker 3: again is just reeks of a cash grab. And this
- 39:21Speaker 3: is gonna be in dollar boxes, uh I say, dogbox,
- 39:23Speaker 3: This is gonna be in dime boxes and quarterboxes. You're
- 39:27Speaker 3: just gonna be picking these up over the next few
- 39:28Speaker 3: years because everybody had them, and you know, the people
- 39:31Speaker 3: that orded him ordered a ton of them. It wasn't
- 39:34Speaker 3: just a onesie tuesdie. If you went in for this,
- 39:36Speaker 3: you win for a lot and they're gonna be They're
- 39:39Speaker 3: gonna be so gushed on cheap once once this comes through,
- 39:41Speaker 3: So you're gonna build this set for nothing.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Yeah, And it actually it reminds me a lot of like,
- 39:46Speaker 1: especially in the heyday of our collecting, those like late
- 39:50Speaker 1: ninety sets that were like Jordan and Bowls related and
- 39:55Speaker 1: McGuire so SA related, and there were all sorts of
- 39:58Speaker 1: commemorative sets in all sorts of things where I especially
- 40:03Speaker 1: run into them at like garage sales where people think
- 40:06Speaker 1: they still have tons of value and you're like, and
- 40:08Speaker 1: that's like a two dollars five dollars set, Like it's
- 40:11Speaker 1: not worth much, and like that is what this kind
- 40:13Speaker 1: of breaks up for me. But you did hint at
- 40:16Speaker 1: the major hits in here, So there are major hits buried.
- 40:20Speaker 1: It's going to be really tough to uncover them. But
- 40:23Speaker 1: tops did get a hold of the pants and the
- 40:26Speaker 1: gloves from the fifty to fifty games, so those are
- 40:29Speaker 1: embedded in some of these cards and made into one
- 40:33Speaker 1: of one's with oh tiny signature. Especially there's going to
- 40:37Speaker 1: be an MLB logo. Man, that's going to be a
- 40:39Speaker 1: significant chase. I think what they're actually doing is they're
- 40:42Speaker 1: embedding a new line of Tops cards within it called
- 40:46Speaker 1: Tops Dynasty Black, which is the way that I'm reading it, Like,
- 40:51Speaker 1: you know, there's not a ton of details because this
- 40:52Speaker 1: is still like the biggest or like the first foray
- 40:56Speaker 1: of this going into it. And with that, I think
- 41:00Speaker 1: what we're looking at is almost like a Tops now,
- 41:03Speaker 1: but with Tops Dynasty, where they're going to be pumping
- 41:06Speaker 1: out probably multi hundred even like thousand dollars cards of
- 41:10Speaker 1: just like really high end stuff to be able to
- 41:13Speaker 1: like meet the market need. I think it's an interesting
- 41:17Speaker 1: move because I think it'll be cool to see like
- 41:19Speaker 1: what comes through it and like what innovative things they do.
- 41:21Speaker 1: But at the same time, doesn't this just like kill
- 41:25Speaker 1: Tops Dynasty at the end, Like if you're not going
- 41:27Speaker 1: to be able to get this like one of one
- 41:30Speaker 1: Otani card in Tops Dynasty, where you know, that's where
- 41:35Speaker 1: you've got the most special stuff, you know, all sorts
- 41:37Speaker 1: of like cut autos of Babe Ruth and all sorts
- 41:41Speaker 1: of just like really the bat knobs that we've gone
- 41:43Speaker 1: over in the past, and just really high end stuff.
- 41:48Speaker 1: If the high if there's another kind of like lane
- 41:50Speaker 1: of that, aren't you just kind of undercutting that really
- 41:53Speaker 1: high end stuff that's already out there, or I just
- 41:56Speaker 1: kind of not understanding the marketing here because I'm an
- 41:59Speaker 1: accounting guy.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think you're right.
- 42:02Speaker 3: It's it's so out of reach and it's so of
- 42:07Speaker 3: mismatch of the product that it's in that nobody I
- 42:11Speaker 3: don't think them is expecting to get them, and they're
- 42:13Speaker 3: gonna be so few and far between, so there's not
- 42:15Speaker 3: like a base set of them or anything like that.
- 42:18Speaker 3: And so it's just like this oddball kind of unique.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Tops Dynasty is already like incredibly hard to find, incredibly
- 42:24Speaker 3: hard to get incredibly valuable cards, and so just having
- 42:28Speaker 3: like what I call a base Tops Dynasty card air quotes,
- 42:32Speaker 3: there is still an impressive card. Now you can't even
- 42:36Speaker 3: get the best one in the product, and you've got
- 42:39Speaker 3: to go and buy this weird like Tops now type
- 42:42Speaker 3: digital only. I don't know how to look at it,
- 42:45Speaker 3: a direct consumer only sale. I'm I'm not loving it.
- 42:50Speaker 3: And the other thing is how much did Tops have
- 42:52Speaker 3: to pay to get Obatani's pants? I mean you have
- 42:58Speaker 3: to think that, like it looks like cash grab, but
- 43:00Speaker 3: like do they spend like a million bucks here for
- 43:03Speaker 3: Otani's pants, like to get away from the Hall of
- 43:05Speaker 3: Fame and from the Dodgers and everybody else, Like how'd
- 43:08Speaker 3: they pull that one off? That's really what I would
- 43:11Speaker 3: like to know, and that's a story will probably never
- 43:13Speaker 3: ever get.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I do think some of a lot of this
- 43:17Speaker 1: special Otani stuff that we've been seeing coming out, especially
- 43:20Speaker 1: that card that we talked last week with the fifty
- 43:22Speaker 1: to fifty inscribed super Fractor, it is partly because Otani
- 43:28Speaker 1: like signed an exclusive deal with Tops Fanatics in.
- 43:32Speaker 2: This past offseason. So there that's a factor as well too.
- 43:35Speaker 1: I don't know if that gives them rights to like
- 43:38Speaker 1: certain pieces Parabelia and his pants whenever they can let
- 43:42Speaker 1: us in your pants whenever you want that, Like, yeah, there,
- 43:46Speaker 1: there's got to be some really just very specific stuff
- 43:51Speaker 1: in the language of that contract and the way it
- 43:53Speaker 1: all works. But yeah, and I wouldn't be surprised that
- 43:56Speaker 1: there's also kind of like some element of like a
- 44:00Speaker 1: revenue share with Otani on top of it too, So
- 44:02Speaker 1: like there's that factor is like, you know, if he
- 44:04Speaker 1: had a choice of where to send stuff and he's
- 44:06Speaker 1: got an agreement with a sports memorabilia shop, like Tops
- 44:12Speaker 1: fanatics that can hook you up on.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Top of it all, like that's probably a factor as well.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Very true.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Okay, Well, the other news that I was talking about
- 44:21Speaker 1: is we've I don't know if like some of this
- 44:23Speaker 1: stuff was being held up because of the fifty to
- 44:27Speaker 1: fifty things coming out with Otani and just kind of
- 44:30Speaker 1: everything else going into the hopper because we've got some
- 44:34Speaker 1: new releases on the schedule. Finally, it's been maybe a
- 44:37Speaker 1: month since things had shuffled around a little bit. So
- 44:40Speaker 1: on October ninth, we have Bowman Sterling coming out. We
- 44:44Speaker 1: have Tops Update coming out on ten sixteen, so we've
- 44:46Speaker 1: talked about that.
- 44:47Speaker 2: That's gonna be a big one.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Honestly, that's probably a lot of what's been holding up
- 44:52Speaker 1: the printing presses and releases for Tops as they need
- 44:55Speaker 1: to land Tops Update really well, as it inc includes
- 45:00Speaker 1: the huge rookies from especially all those Paul Schemes cards.
- 45:04Speaker 1: It's going to be bananas in a couple weeks when
- 45:06Speaker 1: that releases. But they also put out the pre order
- 45:09Speaker 1: for Alan and Ginter, which is actually usually a springtime
- 45:13Speaker 1: early summer product that's finally coming out, has a release
- 45:16Speaker 1: date of ten thirty, so we'll do bigger overviews of
- 45:20Speaker 1: tops update in Alan and Ginter because there are two
- 45:23Speaker 1: of the more significant releases as they come out over
- 45:27Speaker 1: the next couple weeks. But I will share the link
- 45:31Speaker 1: to the pre order for Alan and Ginter in the
- 45:34Speaker 1: show notes so you can find it there on the
- 45:36Speaker 1: calendar in case you want any pretty reasonably priced.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I think that's going to.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Be a good product to if you're kind of a
- 45:42Speaker 1: more casual collector to go after again this year, So
- 45:46Speaker 1: it'll be great. And then yeah, with that, we will
- 45:49Speaker 1: wrap up here and take a quick break. We will
- 45:51Speaker 1: be back with that September Player of the Month PC.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Stick around everybody, Okay, welcome back everybody. We are going
- 46:16Speaker 1: to get into our September Player of the Month PC.
- 46:19Speaker 1: So we have been doing this all month throughout the
- 46:21Speaker 1: summer as we align with the monthly awards that come
- 46:25Speaker 1: out to uh, you know those first couple of days
- 46:28Speaker 1: to really highlight the top batter, top Pitcher, top Rookie batter,
- 46:35Speaker 1: top Rookie Pitcher. Am I already off base? It's just
- 46:39Speaker 1: one rookie not well even doing this like you know
- 46:43Speaker 1: all summer.
- 46:45Speaker 2: I take that back.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Let me start over top hitter, top pitcher, top rookie, top.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Reliever in each league. We usually just do.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Those top three hitter, pitcher, rookie, unless we've kind of
- 46:55Speaker 1: got circumstances where either you've got a double dipping in
- 46:59Speaker 1: terms of the rookie, which we do have this month,
- 47:02Speaker 1: or we just get bored of the same people winning
- 47:04Speaker 1: it all the time Aaron Judge, and we replaced them
- 47:09Speaker 1: with the reliever. So we have pulled up one reliever
- 47:12Speaker 1: from the pool for this month, as.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Hyatt Langford. We'll just start out there for our PC.
- 47:19Speaker 1: He's already won one Rookie of the Month in terms
- 47:23Speaker 1: of setting this all up that he was, so we
- 47:28Speaker 1: got a couple of PC cards for him. But it
- 47:31Speaker 1: was a crazy month of September where honestly I was
- 47:34Speaker 1: wondering if he was going to start really pushing for
- 47:37Speaker 1: the Ale Rookie of the Year, partly because I have
- 47:39Speaker 1: Langford and our mainly together and I just kept seeing
- 47:43Speaker 1: his stats go up and up and up through September.
- 47:47Speaker 1: It was a great September in which he hit sixteen
- 47:52Speaker 1: home runs and nineteen stone bases on the season. But
- 47:54Speaker 1: in the month oh Man, this article did not break
- 47:58Speaker 1: it down usually tells me their month stats.
- 48:00Speaker 4: What is this? Uh oh?
- 48:03Speaker 3: He had three with a sixteen six ten slug percentage
- 48:06Speaker 3: of nine ninety six ops, eight homers, seven seals, and
- 48:10Speaker 3: twenty ribbies. That is a full months of work right there.
- 48:15Speaker 3: I absolutely tell you only player hit more homers and
- 48:18Speaker 3: form old bases. Langford, this little guy you named me
- 48:21Speaker 3: know TONI.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Matt.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I haven't heard of him. But because of that,
- 48:25Speaker 1: Langford is double dipping on the hitter and the rookie
- 48:28Speaker 1: for the ALE this month, So we will call up
- 48:30Speaker 1: an ALE reliever winner a little bit later. I'm gonna
- 48:34Speaker 1: flip it back over to you though, to see what
- 48:35Speaker 1: your card for Wyatt Langford to put in the PC
- 48:38Speaker 1: for September is.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:40Speaker 3: Well, I'm going to fully own on this one. I'm cheating,
- 48:44Speaker 3: fully own, but I had to to go out and
- 48:47Speaker 3: go on a limb and I'm gonna go with the
- 48:50Speaker 3: twenty twenty four Tops Pro debut and I and I'm
- 48:52Speaker 3: a big fan of debut. I didn't get it this year,
- 48:54Speaker 3: but I'm and I'm kind of regretting it. Very accessible set,
- 48:58Speaker 3: so one of the easiest sets to rip, and it
- 49:00Speaker 3: has some pretty big hits in it, and I'm going
- 49:02Speaker 3: with the triple auto out of ten Paul Skins, Dylan Cruz, Wyatt,
- 49:08Speaker 3: Langford Auto. It is a red, like I said, out
- 49:13Speaker 3: of ten, pro deebut Auto, absolutely.
- 49:16Speaker 4: Fantastic looking card.
- 49:17Speaker 3: You can get it for a cool five grand on
- 49:19Speaker 3: eBay right now if you would like it. I'm gonna
- 49:22Speaker 3: have to watch it and see what kind of offer
- 49:23Speaker 3: I get on this one. But definitely just a fantastic card. Unfortunately,
- 49:29Speaker 3: I think we are looking at sticker autos, which will
- 49:33Speaker 3: be a little bit of a drawback. But right now
- 49:37Speaker 3: three of the biggest names coming up. Cruise as good
- 49:41Speaker 3: as a Cruise has looked and actually looks like he's
- 49:44Speaker 3: got a good, great career ahead of him. He is
- 49:47Speaker 3: Schemes is just carrying everything. Langford looks like he's getting there.
- 49:51Speaker 3: But this one has the potential to be a monumental
- 49:54Speaker 3: card down down the road. So that's why I'm in
- 49:56Speaker 3: into the PC this this time around.
- 49:59Speaker 2: Yes, I think that's a great choice, and I mean
- 50:01Speaker 2: we'll get into it.
- 50:02Speaker 1: The NL Rookie of the month was Paul Skien, so
- 50:04Speaker 1: it's kind of a double dip in terms of that.
- 50:07Speaker 1: As we commemorate the Great September from both of them
- 50:10Speaker 1: top three picks from last year. It's going to be
- 50:12Speaker 1: an iconic card as I think they're all kind of
- 50:14Speaker 1: bound for superstardom, and especially once they all hit that
- 50:18Speaker 1: first like All Star appearance, Schemes already has underneath his belt.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Once you get that for like Cruise and Langford and
- 50:24Speaker 1: it kind of just cements them as solid players, It's
- 50:27Speaker 1: going to be even a greater card that. Yeah, it's
- 50:31Speaker 1: it was one of the hits the chases of tops
- 50:34Speaker 1: Pro debut in twenty twenty four here, and I love it.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Great choice.
- 50:38Speaker 3: Hey, I had to go with the rest of the hobby,
- 50:39Speaker 3: which is trying to get Schens everywhere. I might as
- 50:41Speaker 3: well get them twice in our our Player of the month.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it all right, but I'm going to
- 50:49Speaker 1: stick in the same set as you. So if you
- 50:52Speaker 1: want a little bit cheaper option and you're a big
- 50:54Speaker 1: time Rangers fan, I think the choice of what I've
- 50:58Speaker 1: got is the twenty twenty four Pro debut Wyatt Langford,
- 51:02Speaker 1: Sebastian Walcott dual Auto of ten. I've even found the
- 51:06Speaker 1: ten of ten read so you get a little bit
- 51:09Speaker 1: of the color match for the Texas Rangers only five
- 51:13Speaker 1: hundred and twenty five dollars right now in eBay, so
- 51:14Speaker 1: certainly much cheaper, but could end up being a bigger card,
- 51:19Speaker 1: especially if like Walcott can come up and be what
- 51:22Speaker 1: is expected of him with Langford and you know, they
- 51:25Speaker 1: can kind of create a little dynasty together down in Texas.
- 51:28Speaker 1: This could go down as a pretty huge card in
- 51:31Speaker 1: collecting overall. I did I should have also mentioned if
- 51:35Speaker 1: you're looking for pictures of these cards, obviously look in
- 51:38Speaker 1: the show notes for links, but check out rasball dot
- 51:40Speaker 1: com for the related page. We will have all the
- 51:44Speaker 1: pictures of the cards right there for you to be
- 51:46Speaker 1: able to scroll and look at it once. So this
- 51:50Speaker 1: is the first time we've done a double dip from
- 51:52Speaker 1: one product for one PC.
- 51:54Speaker 2: What do you think? Yeah, I like it.
- 51:57Speaker 3: And there's one thing I like about the dual auto
- 52:01Speaker 3: from the same team. There are collectors out there that
- 52:04Speaker 3: just solely stick with one team.
- 52:06Speaker 4: I'm one of them.
- 52:07Speaker 3: And when you get that card that has multiple teams
- 52:10Speaker 3: on it, it doesn't always fit in the collection. And
- 52:13Speaker 3: a lot of the multi auto cards, like the value
- 52:16Speaker 3: is hard for them to stick because if one player
- 52:19Speaker 3: doesn't work out, then the overall value the card drops. However,
- 52:24Speaker 3: if both players work out, the value goes through the root,
- 52:27Speaker 3: and I think that's what you have here. Especially with
- 52:30Speaker 3: a single team, it can really be a monumental card
- 52:35Speaker 3: long term. So jury's still out there. Jury's out on
- 52:38Speaker 3: mine as well, just a little bit more mature.
- 52:41Speaker 4: We'll see. But I do like the pick. I do
- 52:43Speaker 4: like the card.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Again, top sproit debut getting a big shout out for
- 52:47Speaker 3: us here today.
- 52:49Speaker 2: Yes, exactly. So.
- 52:51Speaker 1: The player of the month for the l on the
- 52:54Speaker 1: hitting side was, as you said, I think it was
- 52:57Speaker 1: pretty obvious it with shoey Otani from the Los Angeles Dodgers,
- 53:02Speaker 1: who became the first player ever to get to the
- 53:04Speaker 1: fifty to fifty mark in September. He hit ten homers
- 53:08Speaker 1: and stole sixteen bases and is on his way to
- 53:11Speaker 1: his third MVP. Greatest Player of all Time. I think that, like,
- 53:15Speaker 1: I don't even know if there's an argument at this
- 53:17Speaker 1: point that like in terms of peak, it's got to
- 53:21Speaker 1: be him at this point, in terms of especially when
- 53:23Speaker 1: he's going to come back and be in the hunt
- 53:25Speaker 1: for MVP and say young all over again and just
- 53:30Speaker 1: the world is his oyster at this point. With that,
- 53:33Speaker 1: we've had plenty of Otani PC cards that we've been
- 53:36Speaker 1: putting in. There's also tons of cards out there, so
- 53:39Speaker 1: I don't know if we're ever going to stop on
- 53:41Speaker 1: the Otani PC just because I also love it, given
- 53:44Speaker 1: it's my one of my collections. So I'm going to
- 53:47Speaker 1: kick it over you and see what you're putting in
- 53:49Speaker 1: for this month.
- 53:51Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'm gonna go with the twenty twenty three
- 53:53Speaker 3: tops now Otani Bass Relic number down of ninety nine.
- 53:59Speaker 3: And this is a really great looking card. It's from
- 54:04Speaker 3: I think it's June seventeenth, twenty twenty three, is when
- 54:07Speaker 3: he takes the homer lead with his one hundred overtakes
- 54:10Speaker 3: the homer lead with one hundred and fiftyth career blast. They
- 54:13Speaker 3: got the base from the game. It's got the authentication
- 54:16Speaker 3: sticker right on the base.
- 54:18Speaker 4: Great card.
- 54:19Speaker 3: The reason I'm putting this one out there is because
- 54:21Speaker 3: it is actually available at my local hobby shop and
- 54:24Speaker 3: I've looked at the multiple times, even made an offer
- 54:27Speaker 3: on it, which they refused because I'm cheap, and it's
- 54:32Speaker 3: still sitting there to this day, and I'm and I
- 54:35Speaker 3: just I want it. I really want this one of
- 54:38Speaker 3: the PC. And to your point, like we all have
- 54:40Speaker 3: our PCs, I don't have a big o' tiny PC.
- 54:42Speaker 3: I just got a few and I look at this
- 54:45Speaker 3: card and it's just it's a great card. The problem being,
- 54:49Speaker 3: I think, even when I found an eBay is significantly
- 54:51Speaker 3: cheaper than the one at the local bobby shop, which
- 54:55Speaker 3: I think was like two hundred and eighty versus the
- 54:56Speaker 3: one I can just buy all day for two thirty
- 54:58Speaker 3: on eBay. But it's it's one of those cards I've
- 55:02Speaker 3: I've touched, I've felt I've wanted to buy. So what
- 55:05Speaker 3: better way to add to my PC than through our
- 55:07Speaker 3: player of the month. So just a little homegrown nostalgia for.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Me, that's fantastic.
- 55:13Speaker 4: That's great.
- 55:14Speaker 1: And uh I love base cards, the texture of the
- 55:16Speaker 1: bass in there, and then sometimes you get like the
- 55:19Speaker 1: side piece that has like the cool logos and stuff.
- 55:22Speaker 1: But on top of that being authenticated, it's great. I
- 55:25Speaker 1: don't have any base relic cards in my PC.
- 55:30Speaker 3: To you, I think I might have one, and there
- 55:34Speaker 3: they're always one of those is really a really thick
- 55:36Speaker 3: card to get that base in there. So I think
- 55:38Speaker 3: I have one if if I recall it's either a
- 55:40Speaker 3: base or a cleat. I can't remember which one. And
- 55:42Speaker 3: it's one of those that you can't find a good
- 55:44Speaker 3: topler for.
- 55:46Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely yeah.
- 55:47Speaker 4: It's a tough one.
- 55:48Speaker 1: You need like an entire just like box for it.
- 55:51Speaker 1: Until you find the right you're just like going around
- 55:54Speaker 1: to card chopped, card chop.
- 55:55Speaker 3: They never they never lasted in my PC because I
- 55:57Speaker 3: get so annoyed but they can't find the right spot
- 55:59Speaker 3: to store it, and I end up like selling it
- 56:01Speaker 3: because I just out of spite of it not fitting
- 56:03Speaker 3: in a box to get personal issues.
- 56:06Speaker 1: It's great, Okay, Well with my choice, I am going
- 56:11Speaker 1: very high end here. I am going to go with
- 56:12Speaker 1: the twenty eighteen Bowman Chrome number one Super short Print
- 56:18Speaker 1: carrying bag variation where this is the Otani Rookie card
- 56:23Speaker 1: from Bowman Chrome. So we've talked about this a little
- 56:26Speaker 1: bit before, back when we were doing the PC for him,
- 56:30Speaker 1: and you put in the Kanji Blue Refractor Auto and
- 56:35Speaker 1: that is that Otani doesn't technically have like a bowman first,
- 56:39Speaker 1: so his rookie card is his Bowman first. So it
- 56:42Speaker 1: really is like a huge card in the hobby because
- 56:47Speaker 1: of just all those Bowman freaks out there. If you
- 56:49Speaker 1: need the technical Otani rookie card, you can't go to
- 56:54Speaker 1: a first, You've got to go here. I'm going with
- 56:56Speaker 1: the super short print variation with the carrying bag.
- 56:58Speaker 4: It is uh.
- 57:00Speaker 1: The PSA ten that I'm looking at right now is
- 57:02Speaker 1: a cool fifty five hundred bucks, and that's about where
- 57:05Speaker 1: they've been going. You look at it on eBay in
- 57:07Speaker 1: terms of even eights and nines sell for a couple
- 57:11Speaker 1: thousand bucks because there are certainly not many of them
- 57:14Speaker 1: out there. Part of it, though, is that the story
- 57:17Speaker 1: behind this is so on top of it. There were
- 57:21Speaker 1: twenty six total autographs of this card, so there were
- 57:24Speaker 1: twenty five refractors that were signed by Otani, and then
- 57:29Speaker 1: so those were one of twenty five and then the
- 57:30Speaker 1: one of one.
- 57:32Speaker 2: This is like one of.
- 57:33Speaker 1: The only super fractor one of one rookie cards from
- 57:37Speaker 1: Otani that has never surfaced. So it's either still packaged
- 57:41Speaker 1: up out there in twenty twenty eight Bowman Chrome product,
- 57:44Speaker 1: or somebody opened it and immediately tucked it away and
- 57:47Speaker 1: never let it surface. So it is a really significant
- 57:51Speaker 1: card that is tucked away somewhere that is worth I mean,
- 57:55Speaker 1: at this point it's probably going to be pushing a
- 57:57Speaker 1: million bucks, if not more, because of just it being
- 58:01Speaker 1: the like rarest kind of parallel of that Rooky card
- 58:05Speaker 1: in terms of there was the pitching one as the base,
- 58:08Speaker 1: the hitting one is the short print, and then this
- 58:10Speaker 1: super short print of him carrying the bag. Plus you
- 58:13Speaker 1: have the lore of just this card's been buried now
- 58:16Speaker 1: at this point for six years, which is pretty crazy
- 58:19Speaker 1: for a super fractor of this size. So that's why
- 58:23Speaker 1: I'm putting in just the bass in honor of I looked.
- 58:26Speaker 1: There hasn't even been one of these autos that've sold
- 58:28Speaker 1: in months and months because they are tucked away and
- 58:33Speaker 1: they don't surface.
- 58:35Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to think this one is still in
- 58:38Speaker 3: a sealed pack somewhere. I don't know if any human
- 58:40Speaker 3: that has the self control not to brag about this
- 58:42Speaker 3: card right now if they have it, and I'm just
- 58:44Speaker 3: gonna I'm gonna go out on the limb. I'm gonna
- 58:45Speaker 3: make a bold prediction that it is gonna surface at
- 58:48Speaker 3: some point, and when it does, it's gonna blow people's minds.
- 58:51Speaker 3: It's gonna be a Kanji signed super fractor for the
- 58:54Speaker 3: short print, and that's just gonna blow everybody's mind, and
- 58:57Speaker 3: it's gonna go for much more than anybody expecting, so
- 59:01Speaker 3: bold prediction. Here.
- 59:02Speaker 4: Love the pick.
- 59:03Speaker 3: I think it was a brilliant pick, and I love
- 59:05Speaker 3: the story behind it, so I'll give you the win
- 59:07Speaker 3: on this one versus just the jealousy of something I
- 59:10Speaker 3: can't buy Right now, I also can't buy this hole.
- 59:13Speaker 3: Let's be very clear that wouldn't be awesome to be
- 59:16Speaker 3: able to pick it up. But okay, let's move on
- 59:19Speaker 3: to those pictures now, So here we go. Here's the
- 59:22Speaker 3: odd ball.
- 59:22Speaker 1: I love it when we get these odd balls for
- 59:24Speaker 1: the monthly awards because the n bitter of the month
- 59:27Speaker 1: from September was Nick Martinez of the Cincinnati Reds. He
- 59:31Speaker 1: went four to one with a point eighty three ERA
- 59:34Speaker 1: and thirty strikeouts. He was electric down the stretch. It
- 59:39Speaker 1: was like Cy Young type of form for Nick Martinez.
- 59:43Speaker 1: And he has just been like sneaky good for the
- 59:48Speaker 1: Reds here over twenty twenty four and will have. He
- 59:52Speaker 1: has a player option going to twenty twenty five. I
- 59:54Speaker 1: think he's actually gonna probably opt out in free agency,
- 59:57Speaker 1: be a decent arm in just like what people are
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: going to be looking for in terms of like that,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Michael waka mold I think going forward that you know,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: back end of your rotation. He is thirty four, so
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: he's got some older cards for us, which is also great.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: So we had lots of choices. As you know, Nick
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Martinez has not only been in MLB since twenty fourteen,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: but had a stint in Korea to you, so it's
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: been an interesting career for Nick Martinez. Where did you
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: go for the PC card this month?
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: So why I went with Nick Martinez's twenty fourteen Tops Supreme,
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: the Supreme styling auto black version out of five It
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: was sold not too long ago on eBay for a
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: full twenty five dollars, so five for twenty five five auto.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: So I can't tell if it's on card or it
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: looks like a sticker gets a sticker, but it is
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: a wonderful die cut card and it just it just
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: absolutely pops. And it's also HARKing back to Top Supreme,
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: which is a fun set from back in the day
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: that I think ended in twenty fifteen if I recall,
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: and hasn't been seen since, and from our musings before
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: the podcast, we believe that's really where Tops five star
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: kind of merged was Top Supreme back in twenty fourteen,
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: twenty fifteen, because it does harken to a lot of
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: those Tops five star type of styles of cards. So
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: it's just a really unique thing. And also if you
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: have any Top Supreme in your collection, I have a few.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: I really loved the cards they were. They're really nice,
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: really neat. I bought a few, sold a few, And
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: that's just one of those relics of the past that
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: was around for a handful of years and haven't seen
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: it since. So going Top Supreme the Supreme styling auto
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: for Nick Martinez this time around.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is a great choice too because
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: it also it reminds me of Upper Deck SP with
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: like just like the angular and the gold and stuff.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I loved Upper Deck sp back in the day. Also,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: it was funny when I was looking at some of
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: the other like more base Supreme autos where it's not
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: the die cut, it's before they really got their sticker
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: game down, because like the sticker actually like is over
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: the part of the RC shield on some of those cards,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: like they didn't have enough space on the card design
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: that they were still working that out back in the day.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Ten a decade ago, and.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: Those stickers, like the old stickers were like not even
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: like truly transparent things like that. They're questionable at best.
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: So TOPS has learned a few things over the years.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: But hey, Top Supreme is still a fun one. So
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: how about you, where did you go with all your
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: options on Nick Martinez?
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Well, I'm sticking in twenty fourteen as well to get
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: another rookie card, and I am going with the twenty
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: fourteen TOPS update red Foil. So we've had a couple
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: of these red Foils before we've been Actually the Mookie
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: version of this was picked twice from the update set
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: from us back in the day.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: But this is a it's.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: A great card that, like the picture doesn't honestly do
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: just as how cool the red Foil cards from twenty
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: fourteen look when they're in your hand. That if you
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: have a team that has a red color in their logo.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: So the Rangers work really well here, obviously, like the Cardinals,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: the Red Sox, the Reds, they're fantastic cards own. I've
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: always liked the twenty fourteen design. I think it's actually
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: like it'll be exciting that the twenty fourteen designs probably
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: you know now that it's ten years old, will start
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: getting worked into more things as kind of like a
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: vintage design quote unquote, but I think it's a nice
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: christ design. And you get the red foil that's really
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: gonna pop cheap, cheap cards. So this is certainly one
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: that you know, if you're looking to avoid some of
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: these multi thousand dollars Otanian judge cards, we keep picking.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: The Nick Martinez red foil Rookie card is where it's at.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: I absolutely love the red foil set, like it's one
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: of those that was really just around for really the
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: one year. I think if I recall, and the thing
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: I like about yours is the sneaky color match. It's
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: not the real color match, it's the sneaky one, like
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: just a little bit of accents of that Rangers jersey
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: and so you know you and I can't go without
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: a color match on my card, and you just slipped
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: it in without anybody really catching it.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, thank you.
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Okay, Well let's jump over to the AO Pitcher of
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: the Month, who is going to be spending this offseason
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: sitting at home trying to figure out where he's going
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: to be playing next year as his team is bouncing
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: from the playoffs.
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: That is Corbyn Burns of the Baltimore Orioles, who really
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: turned it up in September after that kind of a
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: mediocre season up until then, but September rounded it out
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: proved that he was a top pitcher in the game
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: as he's looking for that monster contract. He put up
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: a one to twenty ear RA with thirty one strikeouts
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: over thirty innings and was electric down the stretch. Like
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: you can tell, he was also kind of maybe like
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: holding something back all season in terms of like not
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: wanting to show his full arsenal and was looking forward
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: to a deep Baltimore run to be able to just
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: kind of really air out the cutter and get people moving.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: But doesn't have to worry about that now, but should
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: certainly walk into I think a giant deal. Probably him
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: and Blake Snell will be competing for, you know, top
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: pitcher contract over the off season. But given all that,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: first time that we have Corbyn Burns for PC pick
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: and what are you gonna put in for the card
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: this month?
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna go with the twenty nineteen Panini Chronicles.
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: Corbin Burns patch auto one of one printing plate I try.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: I've clearly worked in as many different elements of uniqueness
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: into this one as possible. Patch one of one printing
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: plate auto across the board here on this one. The
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: reason I'm going with this one at probatice is twofold one.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: You could ask me today and burn still places in
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: the Brewers. I don't know why. Maybe it's just the
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: the nlcentral homer in me, or maybe it's being burned
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: by him a few too many times as a fan
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: of the Cardinals, but I see him still in that jersey.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: So I had to go with a fantastic Brewers card,
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: and the second pieces had to find the good patch.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Like the patch on this one is just one of
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: the best patches I've seen of a Brewer's card, which
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: must be frank do not patch terribly well at times,
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: but it has a really good chunk of the m
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: from Milwaukee in in the the home plate shaped icon
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: for the patch on this card. So this is a
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: really interesting one. Always love a patch printing plate as well.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: It's a little special design of how they keep those
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: ones in there.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: So unique card.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Also a pretty cool autograph if you may for Scott
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: that only manages to get two letters in his hot
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: entire autograph with the C and the B. But hey,
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: there's something called for efficiency, which Corbin Burns has been
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: was very efficient in the month of September. So going
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: with this one to one printing plate one hundred and
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: eighty bucks on eBay if you would like it still
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: very accessible.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: Yeah, very accessible for one of one printing plate. Sick
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: patch of a former cy Young winner that uh surprised
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: this is sitting out there because you know my thoughts
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: on unlicensed Panini cards, I am not a fan. But
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: the nice thing is with this printing plate because the
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: picture of Burns is kind of faded, it doesn't really
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: stand out as much that it's an unlicensed card. So
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: you've got also the giant M patch there for you.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: So this is great find. Great great day through eBay
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: to find this one.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: And it's something to be said, like it's unlicensed, but
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: do you have the clear brewers logo trying to sneak
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: through in that patch? So like, is that is that
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: against some contracts somewhere?
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking of those Bruis Jackson Terio having a game
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: two solo shots just tied it up in the eighth
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: as we're speaking, so they're not quite dead yet. I'm
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: going to commemorate the Corbyn Burns experience in Baltimore because
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: I think he's gone right, Like I don't think he's
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: This is actually like a perfect guy for the Dodgers
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: to pursue if they still have money.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: I'm guessing they probably do.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: Because they always do well.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, a tani only makes two million dollars
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: a year, so but he's going to a big market that.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I don't see how he doesn't because he I think
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: showed everything you needed to this season to be able
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: to secure that contract and to commemorate his one season
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: with what I think will be one season with the
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: Baltimore Orioles, I'm going with the twenty twenty four tops
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: Pristine Orange refractor of twenty five. I wasn't a big
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: fan of that the tops Pristine designed this year, but
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: for some reason, the Orioles cards look really sharp in
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: the orange refractor of it. It just really pops that
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: like those. This is certainly a card I would I
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: would check out and click on if you go look
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: at any of these, because there's like this geometric abstract
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: kind of like lines and blobs going on in the
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: background of the Pristine where I actually I've looked at
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: it for like, you know, the Langford card to see
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: like what his rookie card looks like. Part of the
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: reason I think we also have been dancing around not
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: putting in those Langford rookie cards is they're not that great.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: They're kind of boring.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: And the other Pristine cards when you get them in
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: the colors of those teams, they just kind of look.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Tacky.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: But there's something about this Orioles card that, like the
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: orange and the black, and maybe it is because like
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: the jersey is photoshopped on to burns, so everything is
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: kind of just like a slight tackiness to it. It
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: just really looks fantastic. Will come in that in case
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: card for you, like you don't have to worry about
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: geting the one touch and again relatively affordable for an
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: up twenty five you're looking for somewhere between ten and
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: twenty bucks in this card.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Not too bad.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right, Like I'm not a big fan of Pristine,
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: Like it's just it feels a little forced. I don't
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: know how else to say it. As far as the
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: set's concerned. But like this actually works, like it actually
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: works for a color match here with burns. Only thing
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: could be better if he was in the true orange
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: uniform to make that pop.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: But hey, what can you say?
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: And to your point, he's not gonna have a whole
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: lot of Oriols cards, and so I think, as a
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: great get, I think he should have more Orils cards.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: I think they should resign him. I don't think they
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: will so good find here on the Tops Pristine somehow
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: making the Tops Pristine into the pod.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it's still hanging around. I can't believe that's the
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: one that survived the cut of all the products. Top
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Christine whatever, Bring back Supreme, yes baby, now, yeah, we're
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: team Supreme around here. Now, okay, let's move on to
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: the last two players that we have. So the first
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: one is the NL rookie of the month of September,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: and that is good old Paul Skins, who looked fantastic
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: in September, just as he did the rest of the year.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: Even as he was kind of being tapered off and
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: had his you know, starts a little bit more cap
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: down the stretch, he still went three to one with
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: a point seventy five E thirty four k's in only
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: twenty four innings. As he's going to round his way
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: into I mean, we took him as the number one
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: pitcher in our twenty twenty five Fantasy Mox Draft. I
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: think that's where he's going to go because he was
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: up there in terms of total war for the season,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: even though he debuted late, started the All Star Game.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: You know, just like has everything going on around him.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: It's going to be Paul Skins of Mania in twenty
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: twenty five. So what card are you going to pick
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: to put in the PC to look forward to next season?
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, with with all the players that we
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: go through, you know, there's a lot of fun cards,
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: interesting cards. Paul Skeens is like his career trajectory right
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: now is sky high, and so I just had to
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: go basic, pure card that has to be in the collection.
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: I went with this twenty twenty three Bowman Chrome Draft
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: first Auto, just the base first Auto. It is not
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: a cheap card anymore. It's like a five six hundred
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: dollars card you could have bought probably one hundred bucks,
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: hundred and fifty bucks. When he got called up, which
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: is usually not the trajectory of a pitcher first auto.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: It's usually goes straight down, but Paul Skins is just
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: an unbelievable So for all the potentially he has, I
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: think it's just right to have in the collection his
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: first Bowman Auto no other reason, because like that's just
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: the pure It's either the rookie or the first Bowman
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: is the cards that you need to have of those
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: all star, potential Hall of Fame player. I know, I know,
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: we're just the season end, but like he's got all
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: the hallmarks of the potential to be that kind of player,
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: so you got to have it in the collection as
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: simple as that.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: Crazy expensive card, and I mean just the pop culture
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: with the Livy Dunn stuff and everything else surrounding Paul Skins,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: It's going to be expensive card for a long while,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I think. But I think this is what I'm actually
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: kind of looking forward to about with this pod going
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: forward into the future with this Player of the Month PC,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: is that we're setting the ground for Paul Skiings right here.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: Obviously we'll have more update cards in a couple of
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: weeks that we can put in, but it's going to
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: be great to see the Paul Skiings cards that we
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: put into this PC like over the years.
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: Hey, I managed two of them today, So how about you?
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: Where did you go? Can you help? Can you unseat
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: my two?
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I mean, I'm going classic here as well. So I
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: think you've got to if you're looking for another kind
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: of basic Paul Skiings card to start with, you've got
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: to go with that twenty thirteen Bowman Draft Chrome Image
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: vary Asen the Super Super short Print, just because like it,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: front and center is that mustache. You get all the
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Paul Skins mustache, and he's also like, he's so huge,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: and this card really shows that off. Like that is
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: one of the things that I take away from watching
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: schemes is just he is a force of nature in
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: terms of his size and just like overall stature on
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: the mound.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: This card really shows that.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: You get a really nice tight shot of Paul Skeins,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: can see how thick that those thighs are, to see
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: how much power he's generating from that lower half. And yeah,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: we just went over that Otani Super short Print card
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: earlier that you know, there's not many of these that
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: are out there, and while they are there, you've got
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: to snatch them up because they disappear pretty quickly.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: Hey, any card that can make you talk about liv
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: Dunn and Paul Skin's thighs at the same time, it's
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: a winner in my book.
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: So I think this is a great pick.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Yes, there we go.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: We're gonna yeah, but the SEO is gonna go nuts
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: for this podcast. Then I'm gonna yeah, I'm gonna really
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: be typing in Skeens and Livy Dunn all over that night.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: We're gonna have all sorts of new listeners that are
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: gonna also have to sit through like fifty minutes of
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: us jabbergrawing about the playoffs.
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: Hey, it's worth the wait.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: I know it's gonna be great.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Okay, we got one last player to go through, and
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: this is a little bit of an anomaly because we
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: don't usually do relievers unless you know, we've got some
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: repeats or double dips. So we had the double dip
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: on Langford, who won the hitter and the rookie in
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: the AL. So I've replaced the rookie AL player with
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: the reliever of the month, partly because also to commemorate
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: his season. Emmanuel Classe closes out one of the great
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: reliever seasons that we've seen. It's also really interesting just
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: the way that cy Young elector has like changed over time,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: because I don't know if he's gonna get third or
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: fourth is probably his upper end on the cy Young
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: because it was a really ridiculous season a point six
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: y one era overall and led the league with forty
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: seven saves. He didn't allow a run in all of September.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: As you know, the Guardians, part of like was rounded
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: them into the behemoth that they are. Is the bullpen
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: that's anchored by Emmanuel class A reminds me a lot
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: of like Mario and Rovera. Honestly that like you just
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: cannot touch his cutter or you know, Kenlee Jansen, because
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: it is a harder cutter like Jansen's, but like you
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: know what's coming from Class A, you just can't touch it.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: He's an untouchable pitcher. But with that all in mind,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: what are you going to put into the PC four
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: Class A this month?
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: I had to go with a unique card just for
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: just for the grins of it, going with the twenty
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: twenty four tops chrome frozen fractor refractor. You can't say
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: that one frozen fractor refractor the negative five out of
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: zero card here.
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: So it's a fantastic card.
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: It's something that I will probably never own a Frozen
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: Factor but they are just really cool cards.
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: And for a.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: Guy that is cool on the mound, you had to
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: go with a cool card. Going with a MANUCLASSA for
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: the Frozen Factor so simple as that, just love it,
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: easy and not too terribly expensive. For out of zero
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: card about one hundred and thirty bucks you were able
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: to pick something like this.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Up for Yeah, that's still pretty crazy. Somebody's got to
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: be working on like some of those sets or something,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: because they do not come cheap anywhere that like you
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: would think that some of them would slipped through the cracks.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: But people love these Frozen Factor cards.
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: They're absolutely amazing.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: So they're they're fun. But hey, Class A has been
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: fantastic and this is just a fun card from But hey,
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: where did you go with a Manualclass A?
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: All right?
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: I went with the twenty twenty Stadium Club Chrome X
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Fractor the Rookie card, partly because I used to own
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: this card. I pulled it from the box back in
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: the day and I had it sitting in like my
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: rookie box for a while as it kind of like
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: you know, a class the didn't really get going and
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: peeking until a couple of years ago, so like twenty twenty,
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: this card was really like a dollar bin type of card.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: And then as he matured into what he is now
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: with the you know, the Guardians and has put up
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: three straight forty plus safe seasons, it's turned into a
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: decently valuable card.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: It's like fifteen twenty bucks.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: This is also like a great reminder of just kind
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: of like as we get into the off season, we're
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: gonna be talking more and more about cards. And also
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: this is a great time to start sorting through those
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: cards because that class a rookie I had was just
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: kind of hanging out in the rookie box that I
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: have and go through, especially this time every year during
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: the playoffs to see, you know, who's popping and playing well,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: who is kind of coming up, and who might I
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: have buried in that box that you know, wasn't anybody
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: when I pulled the card and tuck it away, and
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: now has actually turned into something worth owning. So those
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: factors together make it for a cool card. And also
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: like yeah, if you give me a chance, you know,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: we'll probably have to cap it on me because if
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: you allow me to, I would just put a twenty
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: twenty Stadium Club Chrome card in for everybody's PC. But
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: the X factors just pop from that set.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: They're beautiful, beautiful.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: Cards, fantastic little card to pick up if you're looking
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: for something of class.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: I'm surprised you don't have a Tani in the PC
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: for that, or maybe you probably probably do.
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: I'm kidding.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: I mean I have the X factor of Otani like actually,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: but yeah, maybe they'll be a PC edition eventually, but.
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: We'll probably have opportunity.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: It's it's too hard at this point sometimes because there's
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: so many Otani cards and can tell you probably not
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: going to ever put in one of those fifty to
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: fifty ones.
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: That probably not.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: Okay, Well that wraps us up.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: So like I said, if you want pictures of those,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: check out the show notes, check out rasball dot com.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: Everything is there. And with that we are going to
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: wrap up this episode. So Brew let everybody know where
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: they can find you and reach out to you on
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: socials that they want to yep.

- 1:20:19Speaker 3: But hey, our baseball coverage has ceased for the off season,
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: so we're gonna be taking up a little bit of break.
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: We will be back here.
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: Late winter early spring for everybody getting ready for the

- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you can find me at mCOL seven, on Twitter,

- 1:20:46Speaker 1: Sky is starting to take off for the playoffs, So
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: if you've been looking for a reason to jump over,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: the baseball crowd is starting to get rolling on Blue
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Sky because, like I said last week, Twitter is quite
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: the cesspool and really is not great for the mental health.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I can just tell you that. And with that, you
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: can also find me on ras ball with these posts obviously,
