Latest / The Gathering Line / The Rockies’ Pipeline Choke Is Capping Crude Netbacks
Transcript
- 0:00Thursday, October fifteenth.
- 0:02Here's what moved since yesterday morning.
- 0:04Global first.
- 0:06Brent slipped two dollars and twenty eight cents, or two point two percent,
- 0:10to a hundred and three dollars and seventy eight cents in early trading.
- 0:14Reuters says Washington is weighing a partial easing of sanctions on shadow fleet
- 0:19tankers to bring down record freight rates and ease the diesel shortage.
- 0:23The slide was checked by two commercial ships, a container vessel and a dry bulk
- 0:28carrier, sinking near Hormuz after being struck by projectiles.
- 0:32Physical is a different world.
- 0:34The IEA's October report has North Sea Dated trading around a hundred and thirty
- 0:38four dollars.
- 0:39On Aramco, Reuters now confirms Tuesday night's strike on the Dhahran complex caused
- 0:45extensive structural damage across floors six through ten, with ceilings down on the
- 0:50executive floor that houses Amin Nasser's office.
- 0:53Field, pipeline and export terminal operations are running normally,
- 0:57and administrative work has shifted to Aramco's offices elsewhere.
- 1:01The Houthis say Saudi oil facilities and airports remain targets.
- 1:06The IEA report, out yesterday, sees 2026 global demand falling two point six million
- 1:12barrels per day, with the fourth quarter down two point five year over year.
- 1:17Diesel is a quarter of that drop.
- 1:19September supply rose two point five million barrels per day to a hundred and two
- 1:23point three million, led by Saudi Arabia, but 2026 supply still averages five point
- 1:29eight million below last year.
- 1:32Observed global stocks are five hundred and nine million barrels below pre war
- 1:36levels.
- 1:37OPEC plus targets are unchanged through November, and the next meeting is November
- 1:41first.
- 1:42North America.
- 1:43Western Canadian Select for November at Hardisty is holding at twenty five fifty to
- 1:48twenty five fifty five under W T I, near multi year lows.
- 1:52The drivers are high tanker freight shutting export arbs, soft Gulf Coast heavy
- 1:57margins, and winter diluent blending that adds roughly thirty percent to batch
- 2:01volumes.
- 2:02Express into Casper is full at two hundred and eighty thousand barrels per day.
- 2:06Trans Mountain is around sixty percent, roughly four hundred and twenty five
- 2:10thousand barrels per day to Westridge, and Canadian egress overall is near ninety
- 2:14three percent utilized.
- 2:16Mexico, nothing material.
- 2:18United States.
- 2:20W T I fell a dollar thirty four, one point four percent, to ninety three seventy
- 2:25five.
- 2:26Brent minus W T I narrowed to ten dollars and three cents, from roughly twelve fifty
- 2:32to thirteen twenty five yesterday.
- 2:34Still a strong pull toward the Gulf Coast.
- 2:37The E I A report is not out yet.
- 2:39The Columbus Day holiday pushed it to noon Eastern today, ten Mountain.
- 2:44What we have is the A P I, and it's a shocker: commercial crude down eleven point
- 2:49one two million barrels for the week ending October ninth.
- 2:52Distillates fell one point five million, gasoline built one point one million.
- 2:57I haven't seen a firm consensus for today, so I can't give you the surprise yet.
- 3:01Remember the A P I and the E I A routinely disagree on size.
- 3:05Last week the A P I showed a draw of two point oh nine million,
- 3:08and the E I A printed three point one eight six.
- 3:12Baseline from that last E I A print: commercial crude at four hundred and twenty
- 3:16four point one million barrels, Cushing at twenty four point seven million,
- 3:20up four hundred and forty four thousand.
- 3:23P A D D four, the Rockies, drew a hundred and forty four thousand barrels to twenty
- 3:27two point three five million.
- 3:29Refinery utilization was ninety two point seven percent.
- 3:34Hurricane Isaias has shut in an estimated five hundred thousand barrels per day of
- 3:38Gulf output, about a quarter of the region, and that will bleed into today's and
- 3:42next week's balances.
- 3:44Deals still pending: Enbridge's two point five five billion dollar Tallgrass crude
- 3:49logistics purchase, and Hess Midstream's two hundred million dollar buy of Chevron's
- 3:54D J Basin gathering, which includes a twenty percent stake in Saddlehorn.
- 3:59Uinta Basin.
- 4:00Yellow wax wellhead pricing is steady at ten to fourteen dollars under Cushing.
- 4:05Gulf Coast delivered wax bids are around W T I plus three twenty,
- 4:09about ninety seven dollars.
- 4:11Heated rail from Utah to the Gulf runs sixteen to eighteen dollars,
- 4:15so basin netbacks land at seventy eight to eighty one dollars,
- 4:19twelve seventy five to fifteen seventy five under Cushing.
- 4:22That does not beat local postings.
- 4:25Spot rail stays shut, and only minimum volume commitment barrels are moving.
- 4:30Salt Lake's five refineries are at their technical wax limit near eighty thousand
- 4:34barrels per day, and basin rail loadings hold near a hundred and fifteen thousand.
- 4:38Energy Transfer's Price River terminal is targeting a late fourth quarter start,
- 4:43pending Utah air permits.
- 4:45Wildcat continues phasing Helper from twenty thousand toward a hundred thousand
- 4:48barrels per day.
- 4:50The Uinta Basin Railway is stalled, no physical construction,
- 4:54pending the D C Circuit remand at the S T B, Forest Service right of way reviews and
- 4:58bond structuring by the Seven County coalition.
- 5:01Operators report planned completions, no interruptions.
- 5:04Bakken.
- 5:05The Director's Cut has North Dakota at one point one five three million barrels per
- 5:10day on thirty three rigs.
- 5:12Gas capture is about ninety six percent, flaring near a hundred and thirty million
- 5:17cubic feet per day.
- 5:18Dakota Access is effectively full at seven hundred and fifty thousand barrels per
- 5:22day.
- 5:23Committed tariffs run five sixteen to seven fifty six, uncommitted is nine seventy
- 5:28five.
- 5:29Rail to the Pacific Northwest or East Coast is ten to fifteen dollars all in,
- 5:34which eats the arb even with Brent this wide, so spot Bakken rail stays subdued.
- 5:39Chevron is cutting Williston rigs from three to two by December,
- 5:43and Hess Midstream guides throughput down about five percent in 2027 before
- 5:48flattening, as Chevron favors longer laterals over new wells.
- 5:52Powder River.
- 5:53Anschutz, Continental, Devon, EOG and Peak are drilling and completing steadily.
- 6:00In basin gathering has room.
- 6:02The constraint sits downstream at GERN zee.
- 6:06Plains is still integrating its five hundred and eighty five million dollar Silver
- 6:10Creek gathering purchase.
- 6:12Now GERN zee, the one that matters.
- 6:14The screen holds at eighty five cents over Cushing.
- 6:18Clearbrook is indicated a dollar fifty to two ten under GERN zee,
- 6:22sixty five cents to a dollar twenty five under Cushing.
- 6:26Unchanged.
- 6:27But that eighty five cents is not what an uncommitted barrel nets,
- 6:31because of proration.
- 6:32Pony Express has four hundred and thirty thousand barrels per day of capacity,
- 6:37moves about two hundred and thirty thousand from GERN zee to Cushing,
- 6:40and remains heavily apportioned.
- 6:42The Tallgrass and Bridger open season offered incentive rates but added no physical
- 6:46pipe.
- 6:47Platte, around a hundred and forty five thousand to Wood River and Patoka,
- 6:51is under severe proration.
- 6:53Saddlehorn and Grand Mesa are full with D J barrels headed to Cushing.
- 6:58And the Double H conversion to N G L service has permanently removed sixty five to
- 7:02eighty eight thousand barrels per day of crude takeaway into GERN zee,
- 7:06pushing northern barrels onto Bridger, Belle Fourche, and Enbridge's North Dakota
- 7:10system to Clearbrook, which runs above ninety percent.
- 7:13So here's the netback picture.
- 7:15A ten dollar Brent premium wants barrels on the Gulf Coast.
- 7:19Cushing is the only pipe south, and GERN zee is the choke.
- 7:24A barrel apportioned off Pony or Platte can't reach Cushing.
- 7:27It either goes north and east to Clearbrook, into a PADD two market already carrying
- 7:32maintenance builds, or it takes rail at ten to fifteen dollars,
- 7:37which absorbs the spread.
- 7:39Apportionment, not the published differential, is capping Rockies and Williston
- 7:43netbacks.
- 7:44Watch the noon E I A print for PADD two and Cushing.
- 7:48That's the brief.
- 7:49Good luck on the call.
