- 0:04Our number 2 welcome back, It's Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 0:07Sports Radio Network. Load everybody out there,
- 0:10flagship one O 6.3 KX&O along with our stations in Sioux City,
- 0:14the Quad Cities, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
- 0:17Hello to all of you. Joined today by David Eichel,
- 0:20hawkeyeinsider.com. Got some more things coming up
- 0:24later on this hour. We'll be joined by Scott Reister
- 0:27and talk a little bit about him, some of the comings and goings
- 0:29along with a book signing with his book that's been out
- 0:32favorite of my youngster at home as we read through that one last
- 0:35summer. He'll join us here at about 1:25
- 0:38and then my pics of the day presented by Circa Sports.
- 0:41Speaking of Circa, right now we go to Las Vegas.
- 0:44He is the VP of operations. He is Mike Palm and Iowa native.
- 0:47And Mike, my cohort. Not today, David I Colt, my
- 0:51normal one. Ken Miller.
- 0:53He's hanging out in Dubuque this weekend and going over to Galena
- 0:56and doing some antiquing. Sounds like a perfect weekend
- 0:59for Ken Miller. Yeah, the antiquing sounds just
- 1:03really exciting. Galena's a nice little town, so
- 1:06maybe Ken Ken can step up and visit my mom in Dubuque.
- 1:09That would be good. Yeah.
- 1:10They're staying in Dubuque, making the drive over every day,
- 1:13though to Galena. He seemed really excited when he
- 1:15was leaving, I'll tell you that yesterday afternoon.
- 1:17But if if you got any maybe ideas for him in Dubuque,
- 1:21though, maybe shoot him a text and get him up to date on some
- 1:23of the fun things over there on the river.
- 1:25Well, Mike, we get a game seven in the NBA and as we go through
- 1:29last night, it was a great start by the Thunder and then very
- 1:33quickly the Pacers gained control.
- 1:35In a game like that, that gets so big of a blowout, that means
- 1:39a huge muddy line for in game betting.
- 1:41In an NBA game like that, do you see the volume go down
- 1:45significantly or people looking for that big price, do they just
- 1:48start firing on the muddy line and saying that's the NBA, maybe
- 1:51there can be a comeback? What did you guys see last night
- 1:53in terms of live betting? The live betting was mostly on
- 1:57OKC. It it it was as people thought
- 2:03that they would still come back and win the game and obviously
- 2:06could get them at reduced point spread and then you could start
- 2:10getting a plus points and he started getting plus double
- 2:12digit points. So really though, we've seen
- 2:15most of the the pregame action on Indiana in this series.
- 2:19So it did balance it out a little bit because we were a
- 2:23decent loser to the to the side last night.
- 2:26Is that line what I thought was going to go up to seven,
- 2:29actually got that down to 5 1/2? Yeah, there was a lot of steam
- 2:31that seemed like it was coming in yesterday on the Pacers,
- 2:33which was surprising. And well, here we go.
- 2:36We get a game 7/7 and 1/2 the number.
- 2:38It's been fluctuating a couple of different places out there.
- 2:41Where are you guys currently at circa in terms of the point
- 2:43spread for Game 7? We opened at 8:00 last night and
- 2:47it's down to seven right now. Wow, I was going to say too,
- 2:53man. I mean, looking at this series
- 2:54too, I know a couple people that have some futures on the Pacers
- 2:57and I'm talking they had it before the playoffs.
- 2:59So that's going to be a really nice payday.
- 3:01So between the futures are potentially on the Pacers versus
- 3:04Thunder, I guess what does, what does Circa want to happen?
- 3:06What would they prefer to happen?
- 3:08But I'm kind of curious what the kind of risk reward factor is
- 3:11with all the Pacers potential futures on it.
- 3:14Yeah, We have a few tickets out there.
- 3:16We have 1 ticket got about $100 at 130 to 1.
- 3:20I think that was back in late February.
- 3:24So the big tickets are out there.
- 3:25Not many people bet futures on OKC because the price got so
- 3:28drastic with their margins of victory early in the year.
- 3:31They dropped really quickly. So for the future book we
- 3:35definitely need. OK, See, I have a friend that
- 3:39has $50 at 100 to one on the Pacers and he says how do I
- 3:42hedge it? Do I have to bet OKC money line
- 3:45because I lay 7? I can lose both ways.
- 3:48I said I would just bet SGA -190 for MVP because if I think with
- 3:53the game Jalen Williams had last night, the -40 yeah, Finals
- 3:57performance A+ minus since they tracked this in 1994, something
- 4:01I think I was reading. I don't think he could win it.
- 4:04So I I think a cleaner way is just to lay the 190 with SGA to
- 4:08hedge your pacer ticket. So let's say Indiana pulls off
- 4:11the shocker instead of you wanting them to just bet him on
- 4:14the money line and getting what, around 2:00 to 1:00?
- 4:16Siakam News I I see around 4:00 to 1:00 at a couple of different
- 4:20shops out there. Halliburton at 11 to 1.
- 4:22Is there anybody else You could even make a case on the Pacers
- 4:25if if they have a ridiculous game seven that can maybe steal
- 4:29the MVP award? So JBT Jonathan von Tobel, who I
- 4:33do just on his show with Stormy, actually just this morning laid
- 4:37190 on SGA and took 370 on Siaka because he doesn't believe
- 4:42anybody else can get win the award.
- 4:44And it's, you know, Siaka won the Eastern Conference and he's
- 4:46played much better in this series than he did in the in the
- 4:50finals, than he did in the Eastern Conference finals.
- 4:52So he said he'd be really. He thinks it's A and our bet
- 4:56that you can't lose, really. Yeah, I kind of like that theory
- 4:59behind it. I.
- 5:00Was really hoping TJ could find a way to do it.
- 5:02It would remind me so much of like Andre Iguodala back when
- 5:05you the Warriors, when when Iggy got that one.
- 5:07He's I see one shop has about 100 to 1.
- 5:11Can you? You can't come up with a
- 5:12situation though where? If he drops 40 in a game,
- 5:15winner. Man, it would probably take that
- 5:17though when it might I. Mean 101, Yeah.
- 5:20Yeah, it might take more than that.
- 5:23That's that's where we are. So NH LS in the books, You're a
- 5:27big hockey guy. The better team won, no doubt
- 5:29about it. Watching that series with the
- 5:31Panthers, I was surprised because I heard heard about some
- 5:35salary cap issues next season for the Edmonton Oilers.
- 5:38Yes, McDavid and Dry Saddle are going to be back, but I don't
- 5:41think there's any way they're going to be able to fix that
- 5:43goalkeeping that they're the betting favorite a lot of places
- 5:45looking next year for hockey. Who did you like?
- 5:50So, you know, I really don't make Stanley Cup bets at this
- 5:53point. I'm more honed in on to make
- 5:54playoffs and I'll wait, I'll wait for the draft as well.
- 5:58I, you know, I've talked to Ken for a few years about Ottawa and
- 6:03we finally got there this year to make the playoffs, I think.
- 6:06And the price is going to be reduced because once Quinnville
- 6:09signed, but I've been watching the Ducks and I think the ducks
- 6:12are really a team on the on the come up.
- 6:14And so I'll probably my my preseason bet will be a yes,
- 6:18Ducks playoff ticket rather than, you know, I think it's
- 6:22impossible to bet these teams at 7-8 and nine to why win the
- 6:25Stanley Cup even even when you're heading to the playoffs?
- 6:29I mean, I just I just don't think that makes any sense.
- 6:33We opened Colorado and Florida as Co favorites with Edmonton
- 6:40and Carolina. I think 8 to one in Edmonton and
- 6:42Carolina, 9 to one. Those were sort of the four
- 6:44short shots. I'd I'd have to look a little
- 6:48deeper into people's contract situations before I got too
- 6:51involved in the markets, but just Anaheim's my team for right
- 6:55now. Interesting.
- 6:56Well, that's the one that you told us before the year I jumped
- 6:58aboard. So I'm going to jump aboard with
- 7:00you again and I'll be playing the Ducks again coming up next
- 7:03season. All right, Mike, want to talk
- 7:04some baseball with you. But before that one on the WNBA
- 7:08last night, just a dreadful performance in the second-half
- 7:11and really starting in the second quarter out of the fever.
- 7:14My question is, I jumped in the Caitlin Clark MVP market when
- 7:17she was injured. I got her a + 290 at Circa and
- 7:20then and I think it went even a little bit higher than that
- 7:22before she came back. I think it peaked at 3:15.
- 7:25Collier's banged up. She's the betting favorite.
- 7:28Is there anybody else anything that you can make a case in that
- 7:31market for WNBA and VP? No, Collier's the best player,
- 7:39but the injury situation is going to be a factor with her.
- 7:42Obviously I don't, you know, if Collier plays, you know, 34 plus
- 7:47games or 32 plus games, she's probably going to win it.
- 7:50I understand taking a shot with Caitlin at around 3:00 to 1:00
- 7:55because, you know, however you want to define MVP, I mean,
- 8:00there's a lot of other levels that she's very valuable on in
- 8:02terms of the marketing of the league, obviously, and the
- 8:05growth of the league that you could take into that, into that
- 8:07conversation if you still wanted to.
- 8:10I tell you what my impression of the season has been, is, is that
- 8:13this Atlanta Dream team is for real.
- 8:15Yep, They're vastly improved. I got, I got them at -170 to
- 8:21make the playoffs after five games.
- 8:22Now they're like -3 dollars something.
- 8:24But I think, I think the Atlanta Dream might be the third best
- 8:27team in the league, behind it the Liberty and the Links.
- 8:31Yeah, I was going to say the dream.
- 8:32I know a lot of people are down on them.
- 8:33I I got a fever future to win it all.
- 8:36I I thought it was good hedging material.
- 8:37I got plus 1300. That's a good.
- 8:39I mean I have good value on it, but you know going from W MB I
- 8:44want to localize it a little bit because I'm very curious what
- 8:47the way Vegas is looking at this Iowa team because before you
- 8:50know they got Mark Granowski and all the other transfer portal
- 8:53editions. I originally thought the over
- 8:55under for wins Trent you know I was much more down on them.
- 8:57I thought it was going to be like 5 1/2.
- 8:59I was surprised to open at 7:00 half, but but now I kind of see
- 9:02things unfold. I see the vision.
- 9:04So I'm just curious the way kind of your your books looking right
- 9:07now as far as Iowa regular season wins over under 7 1/2.
- 9:10Because the closer it seems like it's getting the season, the
- 9:13more people are kind of hopping aboard that, you know, this is a
- 9:15team that can win 8 or 9 games. Well, I would be surprised if
- 9:20they won eight or nine games. We were at 7 1/2 as well.
- 9:26We haven't seen a lot of action on college football win totals.
- 9:31It's more been on teams to win national championship.
- 9:34We just had a guy come in and and bet four different teams for
- 9:37six figures this week. I got to pull up this ticket
- 9:41because I I thought it was very the bet the the bet was very
- 9:45interesting to me. He bet was three teams.
- 9:48I'm sorry, he bet Texas plus 550, Penn State plus $7.00 and
- 9:53Clemson plus $12.00, all for six figures.
- 9:57So that obviously will move those prices.
- 10:00Now. And that Clemson ticket, he
- 10:02could have got that a while back at a lot better price than it is
- 10:04currently. Definitely the hey, I had one
- 10:08for you. I know you guys see a lot there
- 10:10in Vegas on USCI. Looked through their schedule.
- 10:14They have two kind of tricky spots, but with bye weeks in
- 10:17front of it, they have to go to Oregon, they have to go to Notre
- 10:20Dame. It's a difficult schedule, but
- 10:22just looking at them to make the playoffs, I think I saw
- 10:25yesterday a number at like plus 550.
- 10:27I think there's a path as long as they pull off one of those
- 10:30big Rd. upsets that even 9 and three, they might be in the
- 10:33conversation. Have you guys seen anything at
- 10:35all on USC? We get USC is one of the popular
- 10:39teams here, so we always take action.
- 10:41There's one guy that always comes in and that's USC win
- 10:44totals over. He bets like 2530 thousand.
- 10:47He bets their win total over win conference and make playoffs
- 10:50every year. So we always get, you know, some
- 10:52of that kind of localized because LA is sort of a local
- 10:55market for us. But outside of that, I haven't
- 10:57seen much sharp action on USC. One more college football 1 for
- 11:02me and it deals with the Big 12 as we saw a year ago, pick
- 11:06glass, Arizona State, nobody wanted them.
- 11:08They win the conference and do it convincingly of what they
- 11:10were able to do. It feels like at least
- 11:12initially, this is going to be a conference where it's going to
- 11:15be topsy turvy who can win the close games, those kind of
- 11:18things. If any sharks started to fire at
- 11:21the Big 12, any big bets that have come in to win the
- 11:23conference championship this year?
- 11:25Because if you're looking deep down, I mean you're looking at
- 11:27prices and without the heavy heads that you have in the SEC
- 11:30in the Big 10, boy, it feels like there's big opportunity in
- 11:33the Big 12 to get a couple of nice tickets in your back, back
- 11:36pocket. And while I looked it up, I have
- 11:38to tell you a story, Trent. We had a conversation with Dan
- 11:42Mullen last night. He stopped down to Circa and of
- 11:45course, Derek's one of the sponsors of UNLV.
- 11:48So he came down and talked about and his GM was this young lady
- 11:52that used to work for Nick Saban.
- 11:53They came down and sort of laid out their game plan and what
- 11:57they're looking to do and it's kind of a six year plan.
- 12:01But I asked him, I said, you know, it's really hard to leave
- 12:03it ATV gig. I mean, you look at a guy like
- 12:05Chris Peterson, he's had a lot of offers.
- 12:08He said I probably had a dozen offers over the last two years.
- 12:11It had to be a really exceptional 1.
- 12:13And why it was for me, for you and I'll be because this team
- 12:16will be in the Big 12. And I think that's a conference
- 12:19that, you know, in three years I could get this program to win
- 12:22the Big 12 and be in the playoffs.
- 12:23And so I think there's a big opportunity going to the Big 12
- 12:27that you could take a team and make a run, he said.
- 12:30You know, before, before Coach Odom went to Purdue, Purdue
- 12:33called me and I said, hi, I can't get a team to the playoffs
- 12:36at Purdue because I'm going to have to compete against Ohio
- 12:38State in the Big 10 every year in Oregon.
- 12:40And that's just an impossible situation.
- 12:42But the Big 12 is a more wide open field.
- 12:45It's an interesting theory. So maybe he's got a little more
- 12:48info than we do. That would be good.
- 12:50What UNLV Speaking of that sound like they were going to join up
- 12:54with a go with a bunch of different ways, but then Reno
- 12:56was kind of no matter, Reno was kind of holding them up.
- 12:59Is it a late legislative thing out there in Nevada that's kind
- 13:02of holding up a possible move with UNLV?
- 13:06UNLV is, is tied to the Mountain West and, and, and certain deal
- 13:12points that they have with the conference.
- 13:16And I think they're negotiating some trying to get more
- 13:20championship games held in Las Vegas.
- 13:22That would be better revenue opportunities for the community
- 13:25is I think what's holding it up a little bit.
- 13:28But I think it's going to be inevitable that at some point
- 13:32they're going to make the move and that they're going to need
- 13:34to make the move to bring the program to national prominence.
- 13:40The most action we've had on the Big 12 is on Kansas State so
- 13:44far, and we've had a little bit on Texas Tech.
- 13:47Texas Tech with that big payroll I.
- 13:49Was going to save 55,000,000 across everything apparently.
- 13:51You think it would go? Allegedly.
- 13:53We'll see. How that one goes.
- 13:55Hey, wrap it up with this. A baseball.
- 13:57You guys were of course in Omaha last week.
- 13:59I just recap a little bit one final time.
- 14:01We talked to you when you were at Rocco's a week ago.
- 14:03Just overall your guys's trip to Omaha for the College World
- 14:06Series. Omaha was an unbelievable
- 14:10experience. What a great atmosphere there.
- 14:14All the fan bases get along very well.
- 14:16The town really comes to life for that 10 days or so.
- 14:19I have to tell you, though, I'm a little disappointed in the
- 14:22product of college baseball watching these games, The lack
- 14:26of fundamentals defensively, not hitting a cut off man.
- 14:30They're not tracking the fly balls very well.
- 14:32The simple layers by the infield.
- 14:35I don't. It's not that the kids can't
- 14:37bump if they don't know how to react to a bunch.
- 14:41I mean, they don't know who's charging.
- 14:43I don't know how many butts for sacrifices that kids have made
- 14:46in this World Series that have gone for base hits because the
- 14:49defense wasn't ready on how to move around.
- 14:51So that's the only disappointing thing to me.
- 14:54Maybe it's because I watch too much Major League Baseball and I
- 14:56expect all these things to just be routine, But the games have
- 15:00certainly been exciting. There's been a lot of drama, a
- 15:03lot of comebacks, and almost every games been a close game.
- 15:05I think there's only been two blowouts the whole time, and so
- 15:07should be a heck of a final series.
- 15:09Here's a team, Coastal Carolina. They've won 26 consecutive
- 15:12baseball games and they're an underdog.
- 15:13Seems impossible. That it does LSU Coastal
- 15:17Carolina to wrap things up and we wrap it up with you.
- 15:20Mike Palm is always appreciate your time and counting down the
- 15:23days. We'll be there in a month for
- 15:25Big 10 football media days and I'm going to show David Eichold
- 15:28circa. We're going to hang out on that
- 15:29Tuesday night. Looking forward to it and
- 15:31looking forward to seeing you again soon, Mike.
- 15:34Yeah, I look forward to see you guys too.
- 15:35Have a great weekend. You too, Mike.
- 15:37Mike Palm, VP of Operations at Circa Sports, joining us as he
- 15:40does basically each and every Friday look in the markets.
- 15:44And David, the one thing you asked about Game 7, interesting,
- 15:47they got a couple of those big Pacer tickets that are there.
- 15:49They're Pacer fans on Sunday night.
- 15:51I mean, it's going to be really, I really hope this lives up to
- 15:54the hype, but I will say I'm happy that this playoff series
- 15:57has been so I had Thunder and six before the before it
- 16:00started, I thought the Pacers were playing really well.
- 16:02And again, I think they're the most connected team in
- 16:04basketball. I don't think you can argue it.
- 16:06I love the Thunder. I think the Thunder the deepest
- 16:08team. But that 3 point shot ain't
- 16:10falling. And Chet Holmgren puts up
- 16:13another stinker. It's going to be tough for them
- 16:15to win. Man it, it really, really is.
- 16:17But really quick, man. I got to say, I tell everybody,
- 16:20I don't care if you don't care about college baseball.
- 16:22I don't care if you don't like any team that's in the College
- 16:24World Series. You got to go at least once.
- 16:27It's been 20 years since I've been.
- 16:28It is so so so fun. How old were you 20 years ago?
- 16:33Do we have to talk about that? I was 9.
- 16:36I turned 13 under a month trend. Good.
- 16:38No. Then he can become an old man.
- 16:40No. Yes, that's the cut off.
- 16:41No. Yep.
- 16:42Just you gotta accept that there's nothing you can do.
- 16:45Well, obviously, but like not looking forward to it.
- 16:48You can still have fun when you're old.
- 16:50That's not I mean. I like that fun. 8.
- 16:54It's all. Right.
- 16:55Don't, don't make me, don't make me overthink all of this on the
- 16:59air. Trent Condon, not ready for it.
- 17:01But yes, go, go to the College World Series, go to Omaha.
- 17:04It's a perfect city for what the event is, and it's perfectly
- 17:07laid out for it too. Coming up next, we got Scott
- 17:10Reister. He's going to join us.
- 17:11We're going to talk about a book signing coming up for him and a
- 17:13few other insurance and outs happening on the local scene
- 17:16here in the state of Iowa. Scott Reister, sports anchor
- 17:19here in central Iowa. He'll join us next.
- 17:21Plus, my picks of the day Coming up at the end of the show.
- 17:24David Eichelt hanging out with me.
- 17:25Today, It's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 17:36Making our way through a Friday, Miller and Connor continues on
- 17:39the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Ken Miller antiquing in Galena.
- 17:45No, I'm not joking. David Icolt in for Ken today.
- 17:51Now you haven't had to worry about antiquing.
- 17:55I'll tell you what, to each their own.
- 17:57Yeah, I I respect it, and if it brings some joy, I fully support
- 18:00it. I guess since you called me an
- 18:02old man last segment because I turned 30, maybe I'll have a
- 18:04different perspective in about a month.
- 18:06You'll get there, you'll get there.
- 18:07I don't think it's at the top of Ken's list, either.
- 18:09See, He's filling up that bucket, though, with his wife.
- 18:12Because football season is right.
- 18:13Around yeah, that's that's probably a smart thing as well.
- 18:15But I mean, Trent, I was going to say you've known me long
- 18:17enough. Like, do you really think that
- 18:18that would be in my wheelhouse of interest?
- 18:19Well. Maybe a change evolve, you get
- 18:22old. Scott Reister knows what.
- 18:24An introduction who joins us here from Central Iowa sports
- 18:27anchor. Mr. Reister, good to talk to you
- 18:30today. And and you said before we came
- 18:31on the air, you're doing yard work today.
- 18:33Goodness gracious. It was, it rained this morning.
- 18:36It was nice. It was cool.
- 18:37Yeah. You got to get it done, you
- 18:39know, got to look good. You remind me I need to get the
- 18:43lawn mowed myself this evening because I guess softball
- 18:46tournament coming up this weekend.
- 18:47And that sags into the other thing that you do.
- 18:50You are an author and baseball spy, Something that I read with
- 18:53my daughter last summer. A great read for for youngsters
- 18:57out there, just for baseball fans.
- 18:59We've talked to you before about it, but for people maybe hearing
- 19:01about the book for the first time, take us a little bit into
- 19:05the background of you being a sports anchor here in central
- 19:08Iowa. What made you become an author?
- 19:10Yeah, and hello Eiko. Long time no see.
- 19:12Been a. Busy week, man.
- 19:15Yeah, it's been fun. Yeah.
- 19:16So this has been a dream come true for me.
- 19:19Growing up in Dallas, TX, I used to have this fantasy when I was
- 19:22playing outfield. Like if we lost the game,
- 19:24somebody would blow everybody up and we'd all die.
- 19:26So it was like, this Little League is life or death.
- 19:28That's where my Daydream went. And so like, I always wanted to
- 19:31write that book. And like 10 years, maybe nine
- 19:33years ago, I really got after it and learned how to write just a
- 19:36little bit each day and got a got a draft done, made it
- 19:40better, got a literary agent, got a book deal.
- 19:42And like 8 years later I had this book out and it was the
- 19:45number one new released on Amazon last summer.
- 19:47It was like just a total dream come true.
- 19:49It's about a little leaguer who finds out one of his teammates
- 19:52is actually an evil cyber spy. He's got to figure out who on
- 19:54his teammate is trying to download these secrets to get
- 19:57everybody killed. And then he's got to find this
- 19:59device, find a spy, keep winning in order to survive.
- 20:02And so it's sort of launched this whole summer book tour last
- 20:04summer. It kind of going into this
- 20:06summer. Also, it's a three book deal.
- 20:08Football Spy is coming out hopefully November.
- 20:10It's all done on my end. So yeah, it's been it's been
- 20:14awesome. It's been super, super fun to to
- 20:16just see all the things happening and taking off.
- 20:18And you have an event coming up here in a couple of weeks,
- 20:20Saturday, July 25th over at the Field of Dreams.
- 20:24How awesome is that, Scott? Yes, it's unbelievable.
- 20:26Yes, Saturday, July 5th. So in just two weeks from
- 20:29Saturday, and this is a perfect time to come on yourself, show
- 20:32and tell our listeners about it. Because if you're looking for
- 20:34something awesome to do on the day after 4th of July and you
- 20:38were just talking about College World Series, something you got
- 20:40to go do. Well, Field of Dreams sitting
- 20:42right over there in northeast Iowa, about a three hour drive
- 20:45from Des Moines. Yeah.
- 20:46The Dyersville Public Library, the James Kennedy Library called
- 20:50me up and they asked me to come to an event.
- 20:52And we partnered that with Steal the Dreams.
- 20:55And so they're doing a ghost game at 1:00.
- 20:57And it's exactly what you think it is.
- 20:59You know, just like in the movie, the, the ghost players
- 21:01come out of the corn and they play a game and it's high jinx.
- 21:04And then that's that's an hour from 1:00 to 2:00.
- 21:07It's totally free. Just bring a blanket.
- 21:09And then at 2:30, Yeah, we're doing a book talk.
- 21:11I'll, you know, teach all the kids about baseball spy.
- 21:14We're going to play some games, teach them some fun creative
- 21:16writing stuff for all ages. It's totally free, so if you're
- 21:19looking for an excuse to go check out Field of Dreams, check
- 21:21that out. Your bucket list Saturday, July
- 21:235th. Yeah, the ghost game is at one O
- 21:26clock and then we've got the book signing at 2:30, so it's
- 21:28going to be unbelievable. It's been super fun going to
- 21:31different Little leagues and libraries and schools, but to be
- 21:33able to take the take the show out to feel the dreams is
- 21:37really, really fun. You are wise to schedule it for
- 21:39the early afternoon Scott, for the day after the 4th of July,
- 21:43so kudos to you and the guys over there for doing that.
- 21:47Yes, yes, some people enjoy the 4th a lot.
- 21:51And yes, depending whether you're 20 or 30 or 40.
- 21:55But yeah, it's going to be awesome.
- 21:58Yeah, we'll, we'll wake up in the morning, get down there.
- 22:00My mom will be in town, I'll bring my kids and it'll be
- 22:02awesome. So come on out.
- 22:04So I grew up in North Iowa. I've been to Field of Dreams
- 22:08countless times. It's incredible if you've never
- 22:10been there before. So you're from Texas, you've
- 22:14been here in Des Moines for a long time.
- 22:16Have you been to the Field of Dreams often?
- 22:18Have you been? This is going to be your first
- 22:19trip. Tell us about your experience as
- 22:21an outsider going to the field. Yeah, so I was, I was fortunate
- 22:25enough to go cover those two Major League Baseball field
- 22:28games, and those are the first times I've been out there.
- 22:30So the first time I had ever seen it was when we had Yankees
- 22:33White Sox three years ago. And then I got to go back again
- 22:37for Cubs rides a few years later.
- 22:38And I mean, it absolutely blew me away the way they set that
- 22:41up. Absolute heartbreaker.
- 22:42They didn't do it again this past summer and this summer.
- 22:46So hopefully we can get that back.
- 22:47But yeah, being out there, I mean, it is everything you can
- 22:50dream of times 10, you know, And of course, I always watch, I
- 22:54watched the movie right before I went and it's been a few years
- 22:56before my kids watch the movie. So we're going to, our plan is
- 22:58to watch the movie, you know, together again.
- 23:00And they they have not been out there.
- 23:02So what's going to be neat for me is bringing my sons out there
- 23:05for the first time and they can see what I got to see when I
- 23:08went there a couple years ago and, you know, play catch.
- 23:12You know, we're already practicing in the backyard to
- 23:14have our our game to catch on the field dream.
- 23:16So it's it's really going to be neat.
- 23:17I was going to say too. So I for the record, I don't
- 23:19think I've ever been to the field.
- 23:21This dream. What?
- 23:21Yeah. Remember I I wasn't raised.
- 23:23I know, I know. I was born in the state, yeah.
- 23:25Got to get you. I do need to do it, but I'll
- 23:29tell you, man, like that that that's really I selfishly, I do
- 23:31wish they would bring it back another game there at the same
- 23:35one time. The memory, especially of that
- 23:37first one, the nostalgia, the build up, the theatrics of it.
- 23:42It was perfect. And it was one of those things
- 23:43to where, I hate to say it, Trent Scott, I don't know if you
- 23:46guys agree. You almost can't replicate it.
- 23:49You just kind of lose a little bit of that magic.
- 23:51And I think that's the real difficulty of having an event
- 23:54like that because it went so well.
- 23:55You want to bring it back, but the downside of it, it's like
- 23:59it's like Toy Story 5 being released.
- 24:00Like what are we doing? It's.
- 24:04Right. Yeah, it comes right.
- 24:06The next year was really fun. But you're right, it was it was
- 24:08kind of still a hangover from the year before.
- 24:10I remember the column that Randy Peterson had on the register the
- 24:13day after that White Sox, Yankees game saying out of all
- 24:16the incredible events he had covered in the last 30 years,
- 24:18his career like this is the top. I mean, how do you cover just
- 24:21the the nostalgia, the emotion everybody had of, you know,
- 24:24fathers and sons and, you know, parents and kids and then coming
- 24:28out there and having an instant classic where the Yankees and
- 24:30White Sox went back and forth and then, you know, the home run
- 24:33swine out of the corner back and forth and the 9th fireworks
- 24:35going off. Connor was there.
- 24:37I mean it, it was just over the top.
- 24:38Unbelievable stuff. You know, the only thing that
- 24:41could potentially top it would be a Sky Rifter book signing on
- 24:43Saturday, July 5th. This is why you're one of the
- 24:46best in the businessman. Slide that in there.
- 24:49Absolutely. One final time, Scott for
- 24:51people, the book Baseball Spy again, I I said it many times.
- 24:55My daughter enjoyed it so much as she was getting into softball
- 24:58at the time, and now she's deep into it.
- 25:00Really enjoyed the book people, both for the book and for the
- 25:03event coming up on July 5th. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:06Books Baseball Spy. I think there's a sale right now
- 25:08on Amazon for like $7.00 total steal to page Turner.
- 25:11And there's an audio book also if you guys want something to
- 25:13listen to when you're driving out to Field of Dreams.
- 25:15But Saturday, July 5th, free event, 1:00 is the ghost game,
- 25:192:30 is the book signing out there, autographed copies of
- 25:23Baseball Spy. So if you're looking for
- 25:24something awesome, you cannot go wrong with Field of Dreams.
- 25:27And I hope to see a lot of you guys out there.
- 25:29Thank you, Scott. Good talking to you again.
- 25:31Yeah, you guys rock. Thanks so much.
- 25:32Thanks, Scott. Scott Reister, a anchor here in
- 25:36central Iowa. Baseball Spy is his book and it
- 25:41is really entertaining, does a great job and looking forward
- 25:44already to Football Spy hopefully by November, Scott
- 25:47says for that one. Now a question for you.
- 25:50My New Year's resolution, OK, was to read more, read more
- 25:53books. Oh boy, I used to read.
- 25:55You used to. Put me on the You're about to
- 25:56put me in a I'll put you spins out.
- 25:58Yep. All right.
- 25:59So I haven't done great. I've got through a couple.
- 26:02Reread the Chris St. book that Rick Brown did.
- 26:06Read it when it came out. Read it one more time.
- 26:09Read a coaching book, kind of an entertaining look at coaching
- 26:13youth sports as I'm going through right now and I've had a
- 26:16couple of others. David Halberstein's book Breaks
- 26:19of the Game, you've I'm sure heard of that one at minimum.
- 26:22But that's it. We've started a few, haven't got
- 26:24all the way through a kids life work, all that stuff starts to
- 26:28get in the way a little bit. When's the last time you read a
- 26:31book? In the midst of reading 3 right?
- 26:34Now you're in the middle of three.
- 26:36Books, I mean, little pieces here and there.
- 26:38I've read a couple last month, but I got a book in the mail a
- 26:42couple days ago. This is free publicity for it.
- 26:44Christine Brennan shot me a copy of on her game, the Caitlin
- 26:48Clark book. I'm about halfway through it.
- 26:51Trent, it's getting pissed off a lot of people.
- 26:53Oh, really? I mean, I'm talking people in
- 26:55the WNBA media space. The WNBAI have a lot of respect
- 26:59for her because she held nothing back.
- 27:01And there's a lot of journalists in the WNBA that are incredibly
- 27:06unprofessional, unknowledgeable and complete stands of the sport
- 27:11instead of actual reporting on it, that she's going at
- 27:15everybody. And there's a lot of drama
- 27:17behind the scenes. It's, I mean, you know, I've
- 27:22covered Caitlin Clark probably as close to to anyone since
- 27:25prior high school year, high school years.
- 27:27There's some stuff in there that I will admit I did not know
- 27:31about as far as some of the behind the scenes when the
- 27:34professional realm of things hit.
- 27:35So I know she's got has her own Iowa tour.
- 27:38I'm sure she loved to, you know, be on KX now.
- 27:40I'm sure she will be when the book gets closer.
- 27:42But that's going to be really intriguing.
- 27:44The other two books. I just want to throw them in.
- 27:46David Nurse's recent book really dives into a lot of leadership
- 27:49teachings and stuff like that. And then Jordan Montgomery, who
- 27:52is a big Iowa basketball supporter, motivational speaker,
- 27:56keynote speaker, he released a book just a few months ago too.
- 27:59And I'm, I'm kind of rereading that one too, so.
- 28:00Look at you, a vociferous. Reader Well, I'm I'm trying to
- 28:03grow my in leadership and you know, believe it or not, Trent,
- 28:08I do try to grow as a person and I'm just not this guy who walks
- 28:12on the radio I and talk sports a.
- 28:14Lot. You kind of sound like an old
- 28:15guy when you're speaking like that.
- 28:17There's another Caitlin. I knew you were going to say
- 28:19that, which is why I debate on getting into this.
- 28:21There's another Caitlin Clark look coming out, Becoming
- 28:24Caitlin Clark by Howard Megal. I I want to read that one too.
- 28:29So you had to see Howard around, right?
- 28:31Yeah, because he was around her freshman year.
- 28:34Yep. Which is weird.
- 28:36So he's started a website years ago dedicated solely to women's
- 28:40basketball, and they cover it with the WNBA.
- 28:43They call it cover it incredibly well at college.
- 28:46I heard an interview he was on with Richard Deutsch on his
- 28:48podcast, I think last week, and just talking about the
- 28:51background and being there, you know, for those games like you
- 28:54were when there was 200 people in the stands at Carver Hawkeye
- 28:57in the beginning of her career. Watched her hype up.
- 28:59I watched Caitlin hype up her dog.
- 29:01The cardboard cut out after the after the hit against when she
- 29:04had the game winner against Iowa State.
- 29:06Their first eight games that year were all BT and Plus games.
- 29:09Something like that. I.
- 29:11Mean that I will say this, this is my hot take, Trent.
- 29:13Believe it or not, I have a couple of those time to time.
- 29:15Caitlin Clark wins National Player of the Year if she's on
- 29:17national TV her freshman year because every statistical
- 29:22category she was better than Page Becker's.
- 29:24And we all know how I felt about the sophomore year snub.
- 29:27I I I digress. I just want to throw that in
- 29:29there. I do want to read that book too,
- 29:31because I bet that's going to be absolutely, again, that's
- 29:34another guy knows the grindstone that I have tremendous amounts
- 29:37of respect for. No doubt about it.
- 29:40He's one of the best. Yes, Guy that knows the women's
- 29:43game incredibly well. And look at that, a book corner.
- 29:47I'll tell you, if Ken's here, that's probably not an angle we
- 29:50get into. I don't think Ken real deep into
- 29:52the books anymore. It's all about the games.
- 29:54I'm and he watches more games than anybody.
- 29:56I'm really not either. I hate to say it, but like,
- 29:59don't you? Feel good though, when you're
- 30:00reading. I do, but the other part is
- 30:02like, I'm genuinely interested in of, you know, being up close
- 30:05and first hand for like the Caitlin Clark saga and
- 30:07everything like that. It's still, it's still really
- 30:09fun to kind of learn new information Cause again,
- 30:11remember the, I'm so upset I can't remember his name.
- 30:13The big ESPN article that came out.
- 30:15Oh yeah, absolutely. He's one of the best.
- 30:17I, I really hate myself for not remembering his name.
- 30:20That was like. Hunter S Thompson, Yeah, no.
- 30:25Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh.
- 30:26I can see him when I can hear his.
- 30:27Southern Draw I'm I'm a This is going to bother me the rest of
- 30:32the scene. Hunter.
- 30:34Is it Hunter? No, no.
- 30:37Wright, Thompson. Wright Thompson See Hunter S
- 30:40Thompson also a different kind. A lot of drugs.
- 30:43Yeah, yeah, that's like a 30 minute leave from the one that
- 30:46came out and that was awesome, yeah.
- 30:48Absolutely. How great the access he got was
- 30:49and he's that's a guy that writes like one article a month.
- 30:53Oh my God, it is so good. Well, my picks have not been
- 30:57very good here this week, but I. Haven't either.
- 31:00That's OK, because guess what? You're due.
- 31:03They're going to be singing the national anthem somewhere and
- 31:06I'll be fired away. My picks of the day coming up
- 31:08next. We got some few other odds and
- 31:10ends that we're going to wrap up here.
- 31:12David Eichold hanging out with us as we take you up until 2.
- 31:15Miller and Connor continues on the Iowa sport.
- 31:23Wrapping things up with some more Dua Lipa, David Icolt
- 31:28bobbing his head, singing along. Not singing into the microphone
- 31:31though. Nobody wants to hear that.
- 31:34No, I went to a performing arts high school for three years, but
- 31:36I'm way out of Rust right now, dude.
- 31:38So you got to help me out. You get your front row tickets.
- 31:41I do. You're tall?
- 31:44Yeah, a robust 6 foot 3. Wrong, but I'll take it.
- 31:48That's that's the most you've ever given me credit first, so
- 31:50I'll take it. Much taller than I am, doesn't
- 31:53take much. What do you?
- 31:56I don't care who's behind me. I paid money for the tickets.
- 31:58I I don't care if it's AI, don't care if it's a nine year old
- 32:01girl. She can get on her dad's
- 32:03shoulders or mom's shoulders. That's not my problem.
- 32:06Didn't want it. Should have got in the front row
- 32:08before me. What do you act like at a
- 32:11concert like this? Like is is it dancing?
- 32:14No dude, I've not been to. Just trying to lock guys.
- 32:16I do it the whole time. Probably that that's what it is.
- 32:18OK. No, I mean really though, I have
- 32:20not been to a concert like anything like this.
- 32:23I think the first concert I ever went to, ironically, which would
- 32:26be the closest thing to this, was Hilary Duff.
- 32:30When I was like when I was like 10 and I was in love with her, I
- 32:34saw her in Vegas. That caught me off guard.
- 32:36It's so funny too, because I listen to such hardcore rap
- 32:38music and you know that I have a couple tattoo, like rapper
- 32:42inspired tattoos and I'm like, I'm going to do Libra show that
- 32:46is. She does have a song with Pop
- 32:47Smoke though, so it's fine. She's not going to perform it.
- 32:50It'd be awesome. I love it anyway, I dagger.
- 32:53I have no idea how I'm going to act, but there, there will be
- 32:56some beverages involved. I mean, I'm sure I will have a
- 32:58good time. Yes, well.
- 33:00Flying to Dallas for it, that's awesome.
- 33:01So I mean, I kind of have to. Great arena it is.
- 33:04There a couple years ago, that final four.
- 33:06Yeah, it was. It's such a perfect area.
- 33:09You would think it'd be really difficult to get in and out.
- 33:12No. It's I, I love Dallas.
- 33:15I really do. I think it's one of the most fun
- 33:16and it's one of the most versatile cities.
- 33:18That's the same thing about Nashville.
- 33:20You can get whatever kind of vibe or entertainment you're
- 33:22looking for. So I've been informed that we're
- 33:24a potentially going to watch cover band tonight, so that's
- 33:27OK. See, when do you become actually
- 33:29old? Not making fun of you old?
- 33:32That's the next step. Because all the bands that I
- 33:34like, for the most part, they're dead.
- 33:37Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Blind Melon, Elite Singer's all dead
- 33:42and they're still around in some fashion outside of Pearl Jam.
- 33:45Yeah, that's what I'm looking for.
- 33:47Foo Fighters got to see Foo Fighters and hopefully there's
- 33:50been some are. You you're a big 80's rock guy
- 33:52though. 90s, you're nineties. 90s, yeah.
- 33:55I was a big 80's rock guy. My my brother.
- 33:57My brother. Mötley Crüe, Guns and Roses.
- 33:59Roses, Yeah. I mean, I saw Journey live, OK
- 34:02about 8-9 years ago and that was one.
- 34:03I wish I saw it with the original singer.
- 34:05I get it. But they, you know, the guy they
- 34:07have now is fantastic. Saw Creedence Clearwater
- 34:09Revival. Yes, they're my dad.
- 34:11Yeah, I mean, I saw Beach Boys. Yeah, we talked about that.
- 34:13I got like, yeah, I got some versatility to me.
- 34:15That is an eclectic. Mix I, I also just say that
- 34:18because it gives me a little bit more like leave the way when it
- 34:20comes to Dua Lipa. So it's fine, yeah.
- 34:22Absolutely. Well as we wrap things up, I got
- 34:25my pics coming up here, but one topic we didn't get into and
- 34:27maybe David's going to be back with me on Monday.
- 34:30So big recruiting weekend for Iowa and there's been some
- 34:34conversation should they be changing their calendar because.
- 34:38It sucks. Normally there is between what,
- 34:418 to 12 guys, uncommitted guys coming in this weekend along
- 34:44with the guys that are committed and they're trying to put a bow
- 34:46on it, right? Yep.
- 34:47I remember two years ago, as you know, my connection with Brevin
- 34:50Dahl grew up with his parents and he was over there.
- 34:54He was not committed, I don't believe at the time if memory.
- 34:57Served. I don't think so, but I have to
- 34:59let me. But it was the, IT wasn't just
- 35:02the guys getting to know each other.
- 35:03It was also the families coming together in that part.
- 35:06And in this new recruiting world, do you think it's?
- 35:09Time he was committed. He was committed mid-april.
- 35:12So he he was a guy though that was trying to sway those final
- 35:15guys in. Gavin Hoffman was one that he
- 35:17talked about who has now has left the program.
- 35:19But is it time for Iowa football to let's, let's put it this way,
- 35:24if this weekend doesn't go well, do you think they're going to go
- 35:27back to the drawing board and kind of rewrite their summer
- 35:29schedule? I think it's going to be very
- 35:31interesting. I I don't see them doing that
- 35:34because honestly, you got to look at the last few years when
- 35:36it comes to this weekend, man. A lot of they, they have a
- 35:39outstanding hit rate still. Yeah.
- 35:41I think they they do run the risk of, I want to say being
- 35:44irrelevant because that's the wrong word, but like they're,
- 35:47they host the last weekend. It's difficult to get guys in
- 35:51today's era to go through all their visits.
- 35:54So even if they plan the visit for that weekend, you know, if
- 35:57they have four other visits before and somebody knocks it
- 35:59out of the park, they're going to commit and not visit.
- 36:01We've seen we've seen that happen a handful of times as
- 36:04well. I think they're going to stick
- 36:05with what works. I think it makes sense.
- 36:07But at the same time, I think Iowa has to have more backup
- 36:10plans now than ever, especially when it think about the transfer
- 36:14portal. And I think Kirk and the staff
- 36:15have really kind of shut everybody up as far as they will
- 36:18utilize it. I think they're going to be a
- 36:20prominent player moving forward because, you know, this is just
- 36:23my opinion. You can't bank on flat out
- 36:26development anymore just because guys don't want to stick around
- 36:29to be developed. But I do think the one thing you
- 36:32need to give Kirk, Tyler Barnes and everybody else credit for,
- 36:36they, they still, their retention rate's so high still
- 36:39compared to everyone else. They still get guys in the
- 36:41program that makes sense for them.
- 36:45You know, yeah, they might lose 5 or 6 guys a year, but Trent, I
- 36:48mean, who's holding on to everybody on the roster frame?
- 36:51It's it's not realistic at this point.
- 36:54But I also think with NIL and everything, the way it's going,
- 36:58I think Iowa's much quicker to move on from targets because
- 37:01let's say hypothetically, like they ask their crew, what's
- 37:03what's important to you? One development, Great.
- 37:05Two, culture, OK. Three, NIL, I want to make sure
- 37:08my family and I are taken care of.
- 37:09Well, is that really going to be an Iowa fit if NIL is one or
- 37:12two? I don't think so.
- 37:14Yeah, they're going to take care of them regardless because
- 37:17that's just the world we live in now.
- 37:19But again, Iowa believes in its products so much.
- 37:22They're not going to get in a bidding war.
- 37:23And I I don't see that as being a problem until it is because
- 37:27again, you can make up a lack of high school recruiting with
- 37:30hitting the portal for guys that can be there for a year or two
- 37:32and play really, really well. Visits this weekend.
- 37:35What do they got? 4 uncommitted guys coming in.
- 37:37Uncommitted. Remember Dallas Jones?
- 37:40Yes. Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 37:41His brother, Yes. From from Nebraska.
- 37:44But he has another brother there that's at Nebraska currently,
- 37:46right? Yes, correct.
- 37:47Yeah. But it's it's really, it's
- 37:49really cool to kind of watch Dallas and his family kind of go
- 37:51through the recruiting process of this.
- 37:52Cason Thomas, he's a Sioux City kid.
- 37:54For our listeners up there in Sioux City, IA state and no
- 37:58heavily involved. Nebraska's still involved with
- 37:59him. I believe so.
- 38:02My brain's honestly kind of mush right now when it comes to this.
- 38:04I Julian, I leave, I leave a lot of it to to Sean.
- 38:08I I would be very I'm very interested to see if Julian
- 38:11Manson pulls the trigger this weekend.
- 38:12I think he's going to, but that's just pure.
- 38:14I've nothing I've heard. That's just solely my opinion.
- 38:17And then CJ Hester, four-star cornerback from Florida, making
- 38:22the long trip up that would be that would change the equation
- 38:25this week if they could get CJ Hester aboard.
- 38:28I need to make sure that that one's still happening.
- 38:31Interesting. Well, while you check on that,
- 38:34I'm going to check on my picks. I got three of them for tonight.
- 38:37I got 2 in the WNBA, 1 baseball play.
- 38:39I'm fading my Twins again tonight, even though it's Joe
- 38:41Ryan on the bump. A Mizarowski, the young pitcher
- 38:45for the Brewers. He's making his second start and
- 38:48he is dying. Dynamic.
- 38:49Not sure about where the ball's going, but when it is, he's
- 38:52really good. Going to grab the Brewers plus
- 38:53136 tonight. Going to take your Connecticut
- 38:56Sun plus 4 1/2 against Dallas this evening in Connecticut at
- 39:00Mohegan Sun. And going to lay the 8 1/2 with
- 39:02Atlanta the Dream tonight at home against Washington.
- 39:05So 3 picks, Dream, Sun, Brewers for me.
- 39:09What do you got for us, David? Sorry, I was still I, I totally
- 39:12zoned. Look at that, Hester.
- 39:13I I, yeah, I, I believe he is visiting.
- 39:15I was thinking of somebody else earlier in the week that already
- 39:17cancelled, so I'm sorry. I, I, I believe so.
- 39:20But again, I'm I'm still looking.
- 39:21Gotcha. No problem at all.
- 39:22Well, we are out of show for today.
- 39:24The drive is coming up next. It's Lucas, it's Sean today.
- 39:29The boys are hanging out this afternoon.
- 39:30Sean Roberts. That's right, the boys are going
- 39:33to be hanging. That's coming away from 2:00
- 39:35until 5:00, then overtime. Do it.
- 39:38Yeah, I got you. We'll see you at 2:00.
- 39:39We'll see you on Monday. David Eichold will be back with
- 39:42us and then Ken back in studio on Tuesday.
- 39:44Have a great weekend. We will talk to you on Monday.
