- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show on the Yukon Sports Network. I'm Mike
- 0:04Chrispino. We're joined by Jim Moore every Tuesday at six pm. We thank
- 0:08you for joining us, and coach it's Duke. This week we're gonna get
- 0:12to them. We're gonna talk about what happened last weekend at Wrenchler Field against
- 0:17FIU. First, I feel at this point in the season, you guys
- 0:22are own three. We know that that's a fact, but I feel like
- 0:26a couple of things could have gone your way in the fi U game,
- 0:29maybe the NC State game. I mean, this club could be two and
- 0:33one at this point. I don't know what you think about that stuff.
- 0:41I was gonna give you the all could have, should have, would could
- 0:43have, could have, would have, should have h but but it hasn't.
- 0:52Yeah, I mean we're close, but close didn't count. We're an
- 0:56improved team, but it hasn't reflected itself in the record. I think it's
- 1:02come down to some simple things, and I think, uh, you know,
- 1:04simple doesn't mean easy, but we were not executing at the level that
- 1:08we need to execute at and we haven't played with the energy and the passion
- 1:11and the effort that we need to play at, play with and h and
- 1:15we gotta we got to make sure that we do a better job of coaching
- 1:19these guys up so they know exactly what they've got to do. We got
- 1:23to make sure we put them in a position where they're doing what they do
- 1:26well and keeping them out of out of positions where we're asking to do things
- 1:29that they, you know, maybe struggle with. And then we got to
- 1:32coach them up and give them great looks and practice and then when they cross
- 1:36out wide in line, they got to go out and execute and play with
- 1:38great efforts. So if we can do those things, then you know those
- 1:44things you used talking about about being close, you know they we won't be
- 1:47close anymore. We'll get it done. Yeah, they the trends, there
- 1:49were some trends in the FIU game that I liked them. And you ran
- 1:53more plays than them seventy two to sixty. You rushed for one hundred and
- 1:57seventy three forty carries, hell them to eighty yards on the ground thirty three
- 2:01carries. I mean, you know, football games, there's so much involved.
- 2:06But they fumbled the ball four times. You can didn't come up with
- 2:09it at all. I mean, if you get one of those, maybe
- 2:13two of them, that really changes the whole game, doesn't it. Without
- 2:15a doubt. You and I have talked about this before. You know,
- 2:17turnover ratio is the most important stat in terms of winning and losing because it
- 2:23determines, you know, amount of possessions, field positions, so many things.
- 2:27And we have not we have not taken the ball away but for one
- 2:30time against Georgia State, and so you know that's certainly a point emphasis.
- 2:35But I think you know, you start taking the ball away and you start
- 2:39getting those fumbles. Your talk about when you when you execute properly and you
- 2:44play with great effort, efforts going to help you make a lot of plays
- 2:47and efforts going to help you get near the ball when it pops out.
- 2:51And so you know, we focus on those things with the thought that if
- 2:54we do those things, then the takeaways they'll come. But it's time for
- 2:59them to start coming. Yeah, penalties all we obviously change things in these
- 3:04games. I mean the first drive that you can't had trying to answer that
- 3:07touchdown by fi you no past interference in the end zone, I felt like
- 3:12I'm a long way away. I'm two hundred yards away, you're on the
- 3:15sideline. What was your view with that? Because to me it looked like
- 3:17past interference that keeps the drive going. Maybe you get it in the end
- 3:21zone, tie the game at seven. Instead you had to settle for a
- 3:23field goal. Yeah. Well, the rule is is that the defensive back.
- 3:29You know, there's no such thing as face guarding. You know,
- 3:31people say, well, he's face guarding. There's no such thing as face
- 3:35guarding. That's an old time rule. But you have to make an attempt
- 3:38to play the ball, you know, if you're if you're going to initiate
- 3:42any contact. And so I felt like their defensive back played through the receiver
- 3:46without playing the ball. So I would agree with you on that. But
- 3:50we also have to understand that officials are going to make the calls that they
- 3:53make and see it the way they see it, and we can't ever use
- 3:54that for an excuse. You know. I think there's one penalty that that
- 3:59bothered me more than any It was the targeting call on Mumu because I did
- 4:03not think that was a justifiable call and I still don't, and I peeled
- 4:10it to the NCAA and they rejected it, and I think that, you
- 4:13know, it's good that we're putting an emphasis on player safety, and I
- 4:15think it's a real positive that we're concerned with hits to the heads and concussions.
- 4:20I think those are those are very very important initiatives in college football.
- 4:25However, that being said, I think that you know, with with Mumu,
- 4:30it's such a drastic penalty for something that wasn't intentional. I mean,
- 4:35he was just trying to make a good angle tackle. As a matter of
- 4:38fact, if I was teaching someone how to make an angle tackle, that's
- 4:41what I teach him. Yet this young man has to sit out the first
- 4:45half of this game really for just making a tackle. So you know that
- 4:48that that bothers me. There's nothing I can do about it, obviously,
- 4:54not not you know, maybe we can adjust address that issue in the off
- 4:58season with the NCAA legis LA. But you know, I just think it's
- 5:01a drastic penalty for a college kid who gets twelve games on a play that
- 5:10you know, there was no intention of doing anything egregious. So that's someone
- 5:14that bothered me the most, and we lose him for the first half this
- 5:16week. So yeah, yeah, And coach, you are a defensive guy,
- 5:20yourself, defensive back, etc. What can a guy do differently?
- 5:26I mean, he go, You're heading toward the runner, trying to make
- 5:29a play, he drops his head. You're trying to go low. You're
- 5:32not hitting his head, You're not trying to hit him in the head.
- 5:35And it's almost I don't want to say accidental, but I think we're asking
- 5:40the defensive guys and a play like that, we're asking too much of them
- 5:44to make a split second decision when the running back makes his move like that.
- 5:48Yeah, I mean, you know, I don't know that it's it
- 5:51was certainly wasn't intentional, right, we know it wasn't intentional, and he
- 5:55didn't use the crown of his helmet. I guess we gotta go take knees
- 6:00out, you know, And and none of you hope that you're not blowing
- 6:04out a knee, you know, because I don't think any any player goes
- 6:08out on that field intentionally trying to hurt somebody. And I don't think any
- 6:12coach everyone wants to teach a technique that's going to hurt an opponent. But
- 6:15I do know this that you know, as we lower the target which I
- 6:19think is important to do because the head should never be a target. If
- 6:23we may make it so that an offensive player can dip their shoulder and dip
- 6:29their head and initiate contact on a defensive player who's trying to go low,
- 6:32and the defensive player gets gets a fifteen yard targeting penalty and gets kicked out
- 6:36of the game and can't play the next game. The next thing, you're
- 6:40gonna, you're gonna you're gonna have to teach your guys what you got.
- 6:42You gotta go take his you gotta go take his knees out, and you
- 6:46don't do that with the thought that you want to blow his knee out.
- 6:47But I don't know whether the choice you have, you know, like,
- 6:50oh, I could tell Mumu is you gotta go lower. And the only
- 6:56place lower on that play was a young man's knees. And I don't want
- 7:00to see head injuries and I don't want to see blown out knees. I
- 7:03want to see good, clean football. And I thought Mumu's play was a
- 7:06good clean football player. I think it happens all the time, So you
- 7:12know, I can understand the conundrum that the NCA is in, But I
- 7:15think we gotta we gotta find a way to change that rule, or at
- 7:19least adjust it a little bit. Yeah, I'm with you on that.
- 7:23We take a quick time out. We'll be back with the Jim Moore on
- 7:25the UKON Football Coaches Show Here Onlearfield
