- 0:20Hello and welcome. Back to the Easy Double Podcast
- 0:23episode 23. Now I'm joined, as always, no
- 0:27surprise, by Owen Smith over in Ireland.
- 0:31How are things over there? It's good over here and it's
- 0:33literally had to run out and get that wash in and off the line
- 0:36because it started to lash rain but not my run done so it's feet
- 0:40up for the rest of the day for me.
- 0:42Big afternoon of sport, you were just saying.
- 0:44Yeah, absolutely. So the formula one's on now in a
- 0:47little while. And then the Gaelic football
- 0:49over here, it's like our Ireland final day, so Kerry and Donegal
- 0:55are playing each other in the final later as well, so I'll get
- 0:57to watch that after. Hey, I see you on on X in the
- 1:01week that an Irish football game, I think it was like
- 1:04football, soccer. They were firing like fireworks
- 1:07at each other, the supporters, but it was only on like a little
- 1:10local pitch. It wasn't like anything major.
- 1:13Yeah, it's like the Irish, like Soccer League.
- 1:16The fans are so passionate and there is like some pretty big
- 1:20like rivalries. It's just it's not like the
- 1:23standard wouldn't be great at all.
- 1:25But no, yeah, the Irish soccer scene is something to be seen.
- 1:31And then welcome also to returning from his big weekend
- 1:35interview, star of the show, Dean Menzies.
- 1:37How are you? Hey.
- 1:38Guys, Yeah, Hey, Ryan, I'm doing well.
- 1:41Thanks. Yeah, not yet.
- 1:43I really enjoyed the chat with Izzy.
- 1:46So yeah, not excited to be back to normal business where you
- 1:51take the the reins, Ryan. I yeah, I was pretty nervous
- 1:54doing that, but felt like I got a lot out of it.
- 1:57So hopefully listeners did. No, Well, I mean, I listened
- 2:01through like that when I was doing the edit, so obviously I
- 2:04was paying attention to what was being said, but like other
- 2:08things as well. So I didn't get the true
- 2:10listener experience. But I guess Owen, you've
- 2:12listened to it. How did you find it?
- 2:15I. Couldn't believe her injury
- 2:18history in college, like how like bad it was.
- 2:22And it just really shows that like, perseverance and like,
- 2:26pushing through it. Like when you think about being
- 2:28injured for like nearly two years straight, like thinking
- 2:31about it right now, you're like, Oh my God, I could never do
- 2:33that. But like, she's had to come out
- 2:35the far side and like, she's one of the best Australian athletes
- 2:40ever now. So yeah, it's a creditor.
- 2:42And cool, but she gives us her time to do that so.
- 2:46We're very thankful. It's crazy that we've had an
- 2:49Olympian on the podcast, isn't it?
- 2:53Very, very cool. I was like, I appreciated the
- 2:56fact that she hadn't won, like, every junior, national, all
- 2:59state championship. Like, it was like, I don't know.
- 3:02I feel I just assumed that certain, like, natural talent
- 3:05would be what is required to be at the particular point, the
- 3:07end. Like, it wouldn't necessarily be
- 3:09like, I know hard work gets results with running, but you're
- 3:12not sure to what extent. So yeah, I enjoy that you can
- 3:15keep getting better for a long time.
- 3:18And like her, I double AF profile looks pretty cool.
- 3:21Like she's literally improved just about year on year or every
- 3:24second year across every distance from like 2011 to 2025.
- 3:29That's a decade and a half of chipping away at getting better.
- 3:34So basically there's hope for us.
- 3:35Yeah, maybe for you guys. Yeah.
- 3:39So if you're listening to this episode now, the weekly and you
- 3:42haven't clicked play on the easy one and probably advise you to
- 3:46press pause and then go back and listen to that one first.
- 3:48That's more important than the waffle that we're going to talk.
- 3:54But anyway, we do have an agenda quite light in terms of running
- 3:58results this week compared to the track action that has been
- 4:01going on. But what we do have is Sydney
- 4:04Harbour 10K City Night, 10K in Berlin, Gyropodisco
- 4:10International, Lady Castle Bruno in Italy and we'll have the
- 4:18usual training weeks from the guys and then some news coming
- 4:21out of Grand Slam track, some details on the financial status
- 4:25there and kind of what what went wrong.
- 4:28Some notable Brits who have or have not made the entries for
- 4:32the British champs coming up in 2 weeks and also some stuff on
- 4:36the imminently coming up USA track and field champs.
- 4:40We might link YouTube Diaries into some other chat on the
- 4:44episode which is forming part of the news section I guess as
- 4:47well. And yeah, so let's get into it.
- 4:51Sydney Harbour 10K Let's start there.
- 4:53Yeah, So the Sydney Harbour 10 Ki don't think none of us have
- 5:00done that, right. Like I I hear about it each
- 5:03year, but I'm not necessarily like it's not something that
- 5:05I've ever gone to do. I sort of just had a quick look.
- 5:08It doesn't like look like the prize money is is particularly
- 5:12large and I don't think the course is particularly friendly
- 5:15in terms of it's not like Launceston 10, right?
- 5:18Like it's not super hilly like a lot of Sydney seems to be, but
- 5:22perhaps there's a few turns. So yeah.
- 5:26So we're a little bit cold in terms of having first hand
- 5:28experience. But the top three in the men's
- 5:33was Sam Clifford, Ed Goddard and Joe Burgess in 2930320954 and
- 5:393112 respectively. And then on the women's side it
- 5:43was Leanne Pompiani, Caitlin Adams and Jenny Blundell in
- 5:473220730248 and 3402. So sort of names we're pretty
- 5:52familiar with. So it obviously attracted a bit
- 5:53of a crowd. So I'm assuming it's a like a
- 5:57'cause they're locals, right? Apart from maybe Caitlin Adams.
- 6:01But it, it must be like a like one of those local races that
- 6:06that attracts a bit of a crowd. Local crowd.
- 6:09Well, Sam Clifford, he's from, is he not based in SA?
- 6:12SA isn't he? I think he's originally from
- 6:16Tassie, but I think then he he runs for his team tempo, but I
- 6:19think he like lives and trains in Sydney now I think.
- 6:22Oh, OK, OK. Yeah, he's got that link.
- 6:24I think they say link to Adam Diddy but then he's originally
- 6:27from Tassie. I don't know why I know that,
- 6:29but I also think that he's recently moved to Sydney as
- 6:32well, so makes sense I guess. Comments on the race.
- 6:37No surprise to see that Leanne's won, and interesting that both
- 6:43her and Sam heading up the Sydney Marathon fields as well,
- 6:47aren't they? So a little bit of a hit out
- 6:49there. What 5?
- 6:50Weeks out now. Yeah.
- 6:52Well, what do we make of the women's only field in Sydney?
- 6:57Leanne being like one of the main contenders with Jess
- 7:00Stenson and Lisa Whiteman. Who would you pick?
- 7:03Be there. If I was to pick, I would pick
- 7:05Jess Stenson. How about you guys?
- 7:09I was also thinking Jess as. Well, like if you're Leanne,
- 7:13your race tactics is definitely just sit on Jess Danson for as
- 7:18long as you can because she she will like kick her.
- 7:22So like, I don't think they're going to run a specific time.
- 7:25Like, they're not going to be world beaters in Sydney anyway.
- 7:28So if you're Leanne, you're literally just sit and kick as
- 7:31hard. Yeah.
- 7:31As hard as that is with a marathon, you're just try and do
- 7:33it. Yeah, it's interesting.
- 7:34Like, because there'll be some lead pacemakers right from the
- 7:37front group. Like there were, there have been
- 7:39the last couple of years. But I remember like, I did it in
- 7:432023 and like, say Sinead was pretty fit, but I don't think
- 7:47she chose quite to go with that group.
- 7:49Like it was probably a bit too hot.
- 7:51So let's sit like for the lead sort of four or five women.
- 7:55They were sort of sort of chilling in that front group
- 7:57before the race sort of kicks off.
- 7:59And that's often how those majors go, particularly not the
- 8:01fast ones where they're trying to run a world best or anything.
- 8:04So you think that's probably how it goes, but whether or not that
- 8:06pace is too quick. And so then would there be like
- 8:09a separate set of pacemakers that go at like the Australian
- 8:12only pace? Does anyone know what Ashnee
- 8:18Divers is doing? Because if she's not going to do
- 8:20a marathon, you could probably bet money on that, that she's
- 8:22just going to rock up to that start line as well and just get
- 8:25because like, she is the best, SO handy 30K if she's fit the
- 8:29the best looking out of one Aussie eye and one Irish eye.
- 8:36If if she was still Irish would she have the Irish record or
- 8:39not? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.
- 8:42Was she run 218 two 9/2/20? 220. 1.
- 8:47Oh, OK, yeah, no, she's still, she would still have it.
- 8:50Do you think in in chatter amongst friends she claims that
- 8:54she's the Irish record holder as well then?
- 8:56To be honest, after her Olympic performance, you can have her
- 9:02talking about the second one, not the first one.
- 9:06Yeah. Well, but yeah, in ahead of our,
- 9:10well ahead of the interview with Izzy, I was doing some
- 9:13comparison between like Leanne and Izzy to see kind of try and
- 9:17figure out like what sort of time range Leanne might be in.
- 9:21I know she ran 224 and debut was at 2:24.
- 9:25Edna Goya. Yeah.
- 9:27That was the same race Izzy was in when Izzy was sixth, yeah.
- 9:31So then at the ASICS Tokyo speed race the other month, Izzy beat
- 9:37Leanne by a good 50 seconds or so.
- 9:40So I don't know, I find it hard to picture Leanne now running a
- 9:45faster time than what Izzy's run in like Valencia, especially on
- 9:49the Sydney course. And I just don't know if like
- 9:53two 26227 is going to be enough to be first Aussie past Jess
- 9:59Stenson. And then particularly like the
- 10:01wild card, who you just don't really know anything of in terms
- 10:05of like what she's been doing recently and what shape she's
- 10:07in, is Lisa Whiteman, isn't it? Yeah, I think it makes for just
- 10:11a really exciting race ride. Like I feel like we'll be lucky.
- 10:15Yeah, it's not obvious, and that's what makes it super
- 10:18exciting to watch. So they've obviously done really
- 10:20well to get such a high quality field locally and hopefully they
- 10:24get to mix it with the rest of the elite field.
- 10:27But whilst we're on it as well, do we have a definite yes or a
- 10:30definite no from your side of things?
- 10:33More likely, I think no, but I've not confirmed that.
- 10:37Nothing's definite in the accounting world, as you once
- 10:40famously told me. We don't often talk in
- 10:43absolutes, yeah. OK, I'll accept it.
- 10:50So the next result comes from Italy, which is the obscure
- 10:54name, which are pronounced in the intro.
- 10:57So I think this is 11.2 K race around a little Italian town, as
- 11:02much as I could gather. And there was multiple loops, I
- 11:06think like at least 456 loops through this town.
- 11:10And it wasn't, I don't think it's flat by any means.
- 11:12It was like up and down hilly. And the reason why it's relevant
- 11:17is because the field is a bit like obscure.
- 11:20Considering it's a random distance, it's not exactly fast,
- 11:24but we've got your man Crippa winning in 3416, Male Karess
- 11:29second in 3426, Sandra Moen third in 3439 and Jack Rayner
- 11:364th in 3529. So like for context, these guys
- 11:40are all, well, Crippa, Karess and Sandra Moen have all ran a
- 11:45206 or a 205 marathon and Jack Rayner being the sub 30 in five,
- 11:51Kane, the 10K, what 10,000 metre record holder Frustrated.
- 11:56Like it's bizarre that this this race has managed to attract
- 12:00these people. But when I was looking at it, I
- 12:02seen a photo of a male caress on the finish line either last year
- 12:06or earlier as well. So it must just have some
- 12:09prestige or history to it to attract them.
- 12:11There must be a massive money behind that, I'd say to get them
- 12:15boys. Izzy was saying off there like
- 12:19she's got a bit of a where she was staying in sort of that like
- 12:23a bit of a rural part of Spain that Sandra Moen was one of the
- 12:28training like one of the people staying at the house with them,
- 12:32which is cool. Like, because I think we'd
- 12:35spoken about the fact that he'd move training groups, right?
- 12:38Because he was Renato, coached by Renato Canova for a long time
- 12:43and thought maybe sort of coming to the end of his career, right?
- 12:46Because he's a bit older and he ran his sort of best at like 205
- 12:50quite a while ago. But I don't know, it's cool that
- 12:52like the MTC crew and sort of training style that seems to be
- 12:57suiting him quite well, right? Like that's pretty, pretty cool
- 13:00that he's running like 30-4 minutes is 1/4 of sort of what
- 13:04he's meant to be racing. So he's obviously getting
- 13:06quicker again, which must excite him and might be 1 to watch come
- 13:11Tokyo if that's what he's doing. Also as well, it might just be a
- 13:14chance for like some of these guys to benchmark against each
- 13:17other. Like if that one hears that the
- 13:19others doing it and they clearly think that they're 5th as well.
- 13:23They think Oh well, it's a bit of a free hit for me to have a
- 13:25race against them and see like where to come out.
- 13:28So you reckon Canova's dropped Moen and picked up Christian to
- 13:33try and try and get Christian to break 220?
- 13:39Just direct swaps. Is Canova train in your mind
- 13:43Christian? Yeah, who?
- 13:46He's got more connections than me.
- 13:47That's. Crazy.
- 13:50Yeah, apparently he just slid into his DMS and still went from
- 13:54there. He's that inspiration.
- 14:02I was actually going to mention this later, but it kind of fits
- 14:05well now. Have you seen Dean?
- 14:08AC Milan are in Perth as of but I think today, but I'm going to
- 14:19watch on Thursday the play in Perth Glory, aren't they?
- 14:22Yeah. And I've seen that they're
- 14:24staying in the crown. So I thought, oh, how funny
- 14:26would it be if I end up like getting a selfie with one of
- 14:28them or something. I felt maybe you'd message the
- 14:32the striker or something. Here I thought that was the next
- 14:34part. There's a few English boys with
- 14:36them, isn't there? Just Tommy Abraham is a no.
- 14:39Not anymore. I think he was.
- 14:41He's with Roma. But there is Reuben Loftus
- 14:44Cheek. Tamori the centre back or
- 14:47something, is it? And then Pulisic as well.
- 14:49That American guys with them, they're actually not bad.
- 14:51Yeah, I'm sure there's a few of them.
- 14:53Who'd? Like a chat.
- 14:57Bring them on. Next guest Well, you know on
- 15:03whilst there's on the Instagram, they've got an AC Milan running
- 15:06club and because they're like on tour, like it's almost like
- 15:09exhibition preseason, isn't it going to like these places in
- 15:12Asia and stuff. And they had a few of the
- 15:15legends with them and their lead in the run club going out with
- 15:19fans for a little city jog, so wonder if they'll do one in
- 15:23pair. Probably not good for your foot
- 15:24though. No, I couldn't.
- 15:27I couldn't sacrifice that for the like I am.
- 15:32Zlatan was there doing the jog in Hong Kong.
- 15:35Zlatan Abramovich. Yeah.
- 15:38That's crazy. That's cool.
- 15:41Anyway, we are we're running pods so let's keep keep it on
- 15:44theme. The next result comes from
- 15:47Berlin. It was a 10K road race again,
- 15:49City night Berlin, 10 kilometres.
- 15:52Now the women's was worn by a Belgian girl Chloe Herbier in
- 15:583112, which is very QuickTime. And second was Eilish Mccolgan
- 16:03of GB or Scotland in 3131. So good to see Eilish back
- 16:10racing there and on the men's side of things was also a breath
- 16:15here racing Jake Smith finished fifth in 2850, which I've seen
- 16:21him claiming on social media is like a legitimate PB because
- 16:25since he's had that red ass illness or spout he's been
- 16:31categorized in runs by saying like it's a post red SPB.
- 16:34Like post red SPB because the level that he was at pre red ass
- 16:39was like insane. Wasn't it was when he done that
- 16:42marathon pacing job and finished it off and stuff?
- 16:45But he's finally now run like a legitimate lifetime PB for the
- 16:48first time post read that. So good to see you there and
- 16:52definitely want to watch as he keeps getting stronger.
- 16:55He's an interesting story behind him, doesn't he?
- 16:57He's done a few, I think he's done a few podcasts, to be fair,
- 17:00talking about that Red X, and I've never listened to any of
- 17:02them. But it is like a something that
- 17:05gets bandished about around running, isn't it?
- 17:07Something I'd like to learn more on, Yeah.
- 17:10Given what I saw from you in Japan, I don't know if you'd
- 17:14struggle from red S so much. You mean I'm I'm not in danger
- 17:19being under fuel? Man, the was it the the the day
- 17:23before, just every time we'd we'd change platforms, you'd be
- 17:27at the like a vending machine getting like a chicken katsu
- 17:30Sando or. You should have seen the
- 17:32breakfast, though, and you've seen it, didn't you, on
- 17:34Wednesday morning. Yeah, that's, that's what I'm
- 17:37thinking of. And then Oh yeah, the night of
- 17:43the race, like obviously just celebrating went the 711 and had
- 17:49about 5 meals from there It's. A gift.
- 17:55Well, perhaps not, given that my my last race resulted in a
- 18:00toilet stuff. Maybe I need to dial it down?
- 18:05Train that bladder. There wasn't a problem mate.
- 18:14And to the back to the results. There was a 5K in Sweden where
- 18:17the 5000 meters of which is about.
- 18:19Doyle finished second in 15-10. And did she touch upon that in
- 18:25the in the chat team? I can't remember if it was
- 18:27before or after, but or during, but I think she was saying she
- 18:31just had to do so much work and it was pretty frustrating.
- 18:34I think. Like, yeah, it sounded like, as
- 18:38has been the case in a few different, in a few races, like
- 18:41particularly some of these track races, she sort of finds herself
- 18:44at the front doing all the work. So it sort of doesn't, which is
- 18:47a shame because yeah, he's sort of watching some of these really
- 18:50fast races get run with some other Aussies in them and
- 18:53wanting to be part of them. But you find yourself just doing
- 18:56all the work, which as you know, it's sort of just a really hard
- 18:58way to umm, to do it. You just sort of spend a lot of
- 19:01your effort before it's umm, and then inevitably someone's copped
- 19:04a ride and kicked over the top of you, I think was the what I
- 19:08understood it to be. Yeah, when you look at the so
- 19:11she's finished second and first was 25 seconds ahead and 3rd was
- 19:1640 seconds back. So it just sounds like a lonely,
- 19:19painful race, doesn't it? Isolated in second.
- 19:23It's never a fun way to run 12 1/2 laps.
- 19:26Coming up this evening, just after we record, there's a mild
- 19:30meat which I thought was mentioning in terms of the
- 19:33field. So again, in Berlin, this one's
- 19:35called the ISTAF, and I have no idea what it stands for, but the
- 19:40field includes Jude Thomas and Adam Spencer of Australia.
- 20:06I mean like minus the major hitters, that's like the Diamond
- 20:10League failed if you put like in the goose or care in there,
- 20:13isn't it? It's pretty stacked.
- 20:15And then lastly, we've there's two more Diamond leagues.
- 20:19I think why it's been so quiet this week is because we just
- 20:21used to having like a major Diamond League meet or something
- 20:24every week at the minute, aren't we?
- 20:26But there's a break for US champs coming up this Thursday,
- 20:30which we'll get to, and then British champs the week after.
- 20:34And then the Diamond League is back for two more meets before
- 20:38the qualifying window for Tokyo closes.
- 20:40So there's one in Seattle set in Poland and then one in Luzan in
- 20:45Switzerland. So what's the space for people
- 20:48chasing last minute times and qualifiers there before the
- 20:51window closes? My fellows, do you want to tell
- 20:55us about your week of training? Certainly.
- 21:00So, yeah, so I'd run the Shelly 10K on the Sunday.
- 21:05So Monday was just the regular commutes to and from the office,
- 21:12nothing too much to report. Tuesday into the office again
- 21:18and then to the track. So that's about 60.
- 21:25Sorry, shorter commute to the track.
- 21:26That's right. So on Tuesday I needed to go
- 21:31collect one of the kids from from school because she wasn't
- 21:33well. But that was that was all
- 21:36sorted. That was all OK.
- 21:38And then went for no, actually that was another day.
- 21:41That was Wednesday. She said it was school
- 21:42interviews, but then I went from from those to the track and just
- 21:48did a black and modified track session by myself before the
- 21:51group. So it was like a bit afternoon.
- 21:53So it was 3 by 1200 meters that threshold, and then 6 by 200
- 21:56meters in around sort of 32 to 34 seconds.
- 22:01Legs felt a bit flat. They didn't feel terrible, but
- 22:05they didn't feel amazing. But glad to have just done
- 22:08something. And that's why I think REF sort
- 22:10of suggested doing something more moderate, which was
- 22:13reasonable given a price on Sunday.
- 22:17Wednesday a couple of yeah, strange runs to and from the
- 22:20office after dropping the kids off from school and pick them up
- 22:22early. So explains why they're a bit
- 22:24bizarre. But yeah, just easy jogging on
- 22:27Wednesday. Thursday morning was the
- 22:32Thursday morning I had off work and so I had just the usual 3 by
- 22:368 minutes with a one minute jog in the morning.
- 22:41And then in the afternoon had we sort of call it the Gregson.
- 22:46Remember that 10 minute tempo, 5 by 1 minute on, one minute off,
- 22:5010 minute threshold. And I had a commitment that
- 22:54night. So I was doing that solo in the
- 22:58early afternoon. Actually, Thursday there.
- 23:02Beg your pardon? Two questions for your Thursday.
- 23:05There is. Is it always the three by 8
- 23:08minutes you're doing in the morning one?
- 23:10I'll either do 3 by 8 or 4 by 6 minutes.
- 23:13Yeah, I think just whatever I feel like in terms of yeah, the
- 23:20three by 8 minutes just works neatly in terms of getting
- 23:22around late monger and then getting into the office.
- 23:24To be honest, I, yeah, really don't think too much other than
- 23:28I I want to get my lactate tested.
- 23:31After listening to the Coffee club interview with the Swedish
- 23:36athlete, I'm going to butcher his name.
- 23:38So I don't, I don't know if even if I want to attempt it, but
- 23:42yeah, I found that. I don't know.
- 23:43Just to sidetrack, did you have you guys listened to the
- 23:45interview? Yeah, I'm nearly done it.
- 23:49Did you like something I enjoyed like or part of it?
- 23:52It sounded as though like the double threshold itself, like
- 23:56he's really progressed over time and he's gotten better at it and
- 24:00he's been. And he sounds pretty meticulous
- 24:02with his lactate testing to ensure that he's sort of doing
- 24:06it at the right level. But then he's sort of like that
- 24:08sort of the sort of baking the cake.
- 24:10But then the icing on the cake is still doing a lot of specific
- 24:13work after that. So it's sort of one thing to.
- 24:16Yeah, so the threshold is like the foundation.
- 24:20It's like what he builds off and then getting me gets closer to
- 24:23the race. Danny like sort of like adds in
- 24:25the speed work. But because he's so strong from
- 24:27the threshold, like you're able to, I don't know.
- 24:30I think that's the way he does it anyway.
- 24:32But yeah, he's mad doing the the tests.
- 24:35Yeah, he does. So he doesn't have to pay,
- 24:37fortunately doesn't have to pay for them, which is nice because
- 24:40I think it's like 3 to 5 bucks a lactate strip for the mere
- 24:44mortal. But he gets his for free which
- 24:46is nice. I think that's what they were
- 24:47trying to get at when they when they were saying how many do you
- 24:50use per session or per week? And I thought, well, he's
- 24:54probably not going to be paying for them.
- 24:55But he did say that in the end, didn't he?
- 24:57Yeah, yeah. Did he say he's like was his LT1
- 25:01or LT2 was going at 250 per kilometre?
- 25:04Yeah, he did. I surely that like that, that
- 25:06has to be LT2, but that is still crazy.
- 25:09And he's like he was doing, he said he was doing 800 reps of
- 25:14short recovery. So the 800 reps were in 202, so
- 25:1761 second laps off relatively low lactate as well.
- 25:20Yeah, just to get efficient at his 5K pay.
- 25:23But he was saying that like if his lactate is 12, it's actually
- 25:27not that high for him because he can get up to like 20 or
- 25:31something like that, which is just he's built different.
- 25:34Yeah. And the fact he's after ongoing
- 25:37full time athlete pretty recently, like he was studying
- 25:40or working before this is even more mind blowing.
- 25:43Yeah, it's worth the list. Yeah.
- 25:45And interesting that he sort of talks about.
- 25:48So like he builds that base in terms of periodizing his
- 25:51training, but then he gets very specific.
- 25:54Like it sounds like he must do a lot of specific work, like,
- 25:58like, like put away long runs, put away any sort of double
- 26:01threshold all the time, sort of at goal race pace.
- 26:05And like when he says put away long runs, I wish they asked him
- 26:08like, what was his long run? What did it look like when he
- 26:12was doing his double threshold? Yeah, Yeah.
- 26:14Or like, what is the long run to him?
- 26:16Because is it 90 minutes? Is it 2 hours?
- 26:19Like you would? Yeah, Yeah.
- 26:22And it was sort of, I'm not sure.
- 26:24And he sort of mentioned like, because they said how many
- 26:26lactate strips? He's like, I only use 2A session
- 26:28now, which is like 10 or 12 a week.
- 26:30So it sounds like like 5 or 6 questions away.
- 26:34Yeah. So 2 on a Tuesday, 2 on a
- 26:36Thursday, 2 on a Saturday. Yeah.
- 26:39Yeah. Crazy.
- 26:41It's cool. It sounds like because for like
- 26:44the past couple of years now people have been going down the
- 26:46double threshold Rd. haven't they?
- 26:48And like, I don't know if it means anything different to use,
- 26:51but to me it's just always been like, oh, you just do to like
- 26:56relatively easy threshold sessions on a Thursday to get as
- 26:59much time at threshold as you can.
- 27:01And the rest of training kind of stays similar really as, as what
- 27:06it would be regardless of double threshold.
- 27:08But the way that he described it is like completely different,
- 27:12isn't it? Kind of put it in there like a
- 27:13bit of a timeline and like made sense of where the specificity
- 27:19comes in and what the purpose of double threshold is and where
- 27:22you should use it and what what it's useful for.
- 27:26I've never heard it like kind of sad like that.
- 27:29Yeah, no, it was. Yeah, it was a very cool listen.
- 27:32Did I have a second question on your Thursday at 9?
- 27:34Now I've forgotten it. That's OK.
- 27:38I can go through the Yeah, the workout was just the Gregson.
- 27:42So yeah, and actually didn't feel too bad.
- 27:47My pace is so the 10 minutes at 313 per K and then the minute on
- 27:54minute offs was sort of a little bit under 3 minutes for the
- 27:57minute faster minutes. And then sort of that maybe 350
- 28:02or 315 to 320 pace for the floats and then another 10
- 28:06minutes at 304 per K. So yeah, so that felt that felt
- 28:12pretty decent. Then Friday I just went for a
- 28:15couple of easy jogs in amongst sort of preparing for the
- 28:19interview. I had Friday off work, which was
- 28:21nice. So just nervously running around
- 28:23ahead of that. You should.
- 28:25Probably clarify. You didn't take Friday off work
- 28:28just for this did you? It was just coincidence, so.
- 28:31No, as soon as you told me that was the gig, I I told work I No,
- 28:36yeah, no, I I just come off of some pretty long days and nights
- 28:42of work. So it was sort of just the end
- 28:44of the period. So I sort of had some time owed
- 28:47to me. So that was I was always having
- 28:49it off. But you were prepared to hand
- 28:51your notice in over it. I had yeah, priorities, podcast
- 28:56priorities. We're nearly by the I'd say by
- 28:58the episode 50 we'll be able to go full time podcasters.
- 29:03OK. I don't know if you've been
- 29:04doing any cash flow forecasts, but there's no catch in this
- 29:07forecast. Of the three of us, like Ryan
- 29:13and I are the accountants, right?
- 29:15So we'd we'd less, we could be creative with numbers, but we're
- 29:19not even that. We're not quite that creative.
- 29:24We'd have to headquarter in Ireland though, isn't it?
- 29:26It's a bit of a tax haven over there, I think.
- 29:28Yeah. Or we'll move to like Monaco or
- 29:31Switzerland or something like that.
- 29:32That's the dream. Yeah, we'll see if we can lease
- 29:36an office of World Athletics in Monaco.
- 29:40Is that where they're? That's where they're based,
- 29:43yeah. Saturday I had so talking about
- 29:46getting a bit more specific. So the hope is I've been doing a
- 29:49bit of this double threshold stuff.
- 29:50And so then I had a harder hit out last Sunday for the 10K and
- 29:54then so had something a bit more specific on Saturday.
- 29:58But I sort of just said to Ralph, I'm a bit conscious when
- 30:00I do sort of race hard and then do like one of some of these
- 30:04like very specific workouts and I've got another race on Sunday.
- 30:08Sometimes I can just flatten myself, particularly my immune
- 30:12system. So we sort of landed a bit in
- 30:15the middle where I'd do the efforts at sort of pace, but we
- 30:18sort of wouldn't quite go as hard on the floats as what we
- 30:21would sometimes do for these specific workouts.
- 30:24But yeah, it's a bit of it was what the workout was on Saturday
- 30:28and it was like a, it's like an Irish like cold snap in Perth.
- 30:33It was freezing. It was I had like a like a
- 30:38icicle symbol on my dash when I was driving to Kings Park on
- 30:42Saturday morning, which I've not seen before. 10° zone.
- 30:48Early really. It was 4 I think four.
- 30:52Wow, youth Aussies are struggling so that yeah, it was
- 30:58bloody cold. My hands were really cold.
- 31:01I was not well prepared for for how cold it was.
- 31:04This is going to be like the heat, like you think our when
- 31:08it's warm over here, it's not actually warm.
- 31:10Your 4° is not cold. You don't know what real cold
- 31:13is. There's frost on the grass when
- 31:16it's -3 or minus. Two it.
- 31:20It hailed this afternoon, yeah. You know what, what The thing is
- 31:26it's, it is actually quite cold in the morning, it's like 3 or
- 31:304°. But then come midday it gets, it
- 31:32always gets to like 1516, doesn't it?
- 31:35So it's like pleasant, but in the UK just.
- 31:37Still think that's? Cold, Whatever temperature is
- 31:39when you wake up stays that all throughout the day, doesn't it?
- 31:42Yeah, Clear. I've seen a tick tock where
- 31:45there's like a tornado or something at City Beach in
- 31:47Perth. Yeah, that happened.
- 31:50The weather is like really, really bad over there.
- 31:52What? Yeah, it's unpredictable.
- 31:57And somehow they were on the news, the Bureau of Meteorology
- 32:00saying we didn't see a comment. How can you not see a really
- 32:03tornado coming? Just open your eyes.
- 32:07It's not something, it's not something we ever have to look
- 32:09for. Didn't have the radar to detect
- 32:12it. But yeah, this worked out.
- 32:15So it was 8 minutes at 310 per K2, minutes at around say 340 to
- 32:21345 S All the floats are around 34345 S 8 minutes. 2 minute
- 32:26float, 6 minutes. 92nd float times 24 minutes with a minute
- 32:31float times 2. Two minutes with a minute float
- 32:34times 2. One minute with a minute float
- 32:36times two. Yeah.
- 32:39So it's a long workout. Where did you do this one?
- 32:42We ended up doing it on what the course of Max and I did it
- 32:46together. We sort of of both racing the
- 32:49half marathon in Perth next or this coming Sunday.
- 32:51So we did it on the course. We sort of jogged from Kings
- 32:54Park down to where they to UWA and it sort of goes along Mounts
- 32:58Bay over the Narrows, which is quite a substantial bridge onto
- 33:06South Perth and along the along the footpath there and then
- 33:09chucked AU turn and headed back. So that's part of what the
- 33:12course will be. But yeah, it didn't feel too
- 33:15bad. I mean, it's hard to get as much
- 33:16of A gauge because we're floating like those when we
- 33:20normally do those workouts. So it sort of started at 310
- 33:23pace, got down to I think we're running on the sort of 250 pace
- 33:26by the minute floats. But it's sort of maybe around
- 33:29just over 3 minute pace for a lot of the reps.
- 33:31But the because the floats were quite moderate, you sort of not
- 33:35sure just how close you are to your limit there.
- 33:38But yeah, we still felt all right, got it done.
- 33:40And what's the what's your float on a Thursday morning in your 8
- 33:46minute reps like how fast are you going on your one minute
- 33:48float? Oh, like 4 minutes.
- 33:50OK, OK, but that's quicker than what you you would do.
- 33:54Hey, you you jog on the I nearly yeah, just stuff nearly just
- 33:58shuffle. Yeah, altogether.
- 34:00But I think, but I think for particularly for these these
- 34:03like workouts normally like we're sort of trying to get
- 34:06pretty close to the fire. So I think I normally sort of
- 34:09press these floats a bit, but I think RAF is just happy for for
- 34:12us not to just to get through it.
- 34:14So what was the total time and distance for that session on
- 34:17Saturday? 45 minutes, 14 case.
- 34:20So sheesh. Yeah.
- 34:23We're talking about the half marathon coming up.
- 34:27Wawa Running podcast did messages and I think they were
- 34:32trying to get a bit of inside knowledge on your plans for the
- 34:37race or weekend because they sent me.
- 34:41So we saw a course record go down last week.
- 34:44As in Shelley Park brackets based by multiple bikes.
- 34:53Are we going to see one next weekend?
- 34:56The males course record is by a guy called Adam Hoyle and it's
- 35:00from 1986 now. You're going to have to be
- 35:03running pretty well if you are going to take the course record.
- 35:05Do you know what the time is? I did it now it dated back to 86
- 35:09that's for sure. 64 O 4. What?
- 35:12Gee, that's fine. Who's this person?
- 35:16What's this person's name? Adam Hoyle apparently, and then
- 35:19they also followed on with, interestingly, the men's and the
- 35:23women's record comes from the same year, which is at the
- 35:26women's is 114. So either a short course or
- 35:30training camps in the USSR. This guy's I've just I've just
- 35:38found the person's athletics. I double AF profile.
- 35:42They've run 2821 and 1347. So where is he from?
- 35:46Is he Australia? Yeah, 224 for a marathon, so got
- 35:52him covered there. But yeah, no, I don't think I'll
- 35:57be shooting for that. For sure.
- 36:01I'd like to be, but no, I think, yeah, I don't know, 66 minutes,
- 36:05maybe a bit under there will sort of be around what I'm
- 36:07hoping for, but we'll see. There's some blogging on the
- 36:12bike again. Will you be out there?
- 36:14This is there Sunday morning. Speaking of Sunday mornings, I
- 36:19did a long run this morning joined by Josh Adam and for the
- 36:29for the second hour of it, I did sort of an hour by myself, a run
- 36:34slash swim. Yeah.
- 36:36Have you seen? I've not had.
- 36:37I don't normally get that much engagement on my survival
- 36:40activities, but everyone sort of and there's an opportunity to
- 36:44pile on. They certainly did.
- 36:45So have you, you probably haven't seen my Straba Ryan, but
- 36:51the I don't know what happened to my GPS because they did it on
- 36:53multiple occasions, but it just completely freaked out and I'm
- 36:58sort of like I'm almost at Rottnest with with my map.
- 37:00I don't know why. So yeah, hard to know.
- 37:06We're all over it. Were they?
- 37:07They were I I've nearly run, I think I've run like a 26
- 37:11something 10K in the middle of all that he dropped 52.
- 37:15You dropped a 115 like 1 kilometre split.
- 37:18Yeah, it's. So annoying isn't it because it
- 37:20just skews with all your records to be stats?
- 37:24And it's and it's right through the middle of my run.
- 37:26So like, how do I? I don't want to crop, I don't
- 37:29want to delete my run. So I'm sort of not sure what to
- 37:32do there. So I've just left it and people
- 37:35just keep, I've not commented on any of it.
- 37:37And people just as they come across it, just explain to me
- 37:40that it's, you know how wrong it is.
- 37:42And so thanks. I'm aware.
- 37:44But yeah. If you've accidentally taken any
- 37:47segments there with like the GPS thing, the people who you took
- 37:50them from will be reporting it for you anyway.
- 37:53Strava, actually, I've not seen this before, but Strava
- 37:56themselves actually flagged it. They said we've detected an
- 38:01issue with this, this activity. This may be in a vehicle marked
- 38:04by the wrong sport or have a bad GPS crop out the vehicle or
- 38:08change the sport to resolve. So I'm assuming I'm not
- 38:11appearing on any leaderboards with that one, but yeah, 100 and
- 38:17says 154 KS, but it might be a little bit less.
- 38:20I'm assuming for the week it's a good week and you're racing next
- 38:25week. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:27So a bit of a lot of week to come, I assume, right.
- 38:32My week didn't really go to plan, but it started off well.
- 38:36So on Monday I got out for 50 minutes and then I'd done a few
- 38:40strides after and then my brother was playing a football
- 38:43game in the evening. So I just went out during break
- 38:47on during work like to get another half an hour in.
- 38:52Then Tuesday was my sort of my last like big proper day with
- 38:58the National 5K coming up next Sunday.
- 39:02So in the morning it was a threshold of five by three
- 39:07minutes with a one minute jog in between that and yeah, cruise in
- 39:12between like 3, I think it was like 316 and 310 for them.
- 39:18And yeah, feeling good. The lactate was low as well.
- 39:21Then that evening was like my last proper big session.
- 39:25So it was 3K like a predicted race pace.
- 39:31So I hit like 3 minute reps for that and then I had a 10 minute
- 39:35break and then I had a 5 by 400 meters and I was banging them
- 39:40four hundreds out in 6564. So yeah, that was my the last
- 39:47sort of proper big session and I felt good the next morning.
- 39:50Gwendy So what what was the first part?
- 39:53Not 3K straight was it? Yeah, 3K straight, so, and how
- 39:57like that's pretty. That's pretty heavy, like after
- 40:00a workout in the morning. And then like, so you must have.
- 40:04Did you spike up for that or you're still in?
- 40:06Yeah, it was on me on that freaking short track where I'm
- 40:09from. So that's why my Strava said I
- 40:13was running like 250 fives and I was like, fuck me, I'm so fit.
- 40:17Like I am so on. Can't trust garment satellites.
- 40:25So what, what pace do you think it was?
- 40:27It was around 3 minutes, yeah. 3 kilometers, yeah.
- 40:31But yeah, still feeling good. And then Wednesday morning I got
- 40:38out for 75 minutes and 16 kilometers.
- 40:42And then that evening I do my circuits class and I just
- 40:46noticed I wasn't feeling sort of 100% after the circuits class.
- 40:51I normally never get headaches. And I started getting a headache
- 40:54and my body was starting to feel a bit achy as well.
- 40:58Like when I was rolling out that night, I was like, oh, Ginny
- 41:00Mac, this isn't good. And then that night, like when I
- 41:04slept very, very poor, like I was like, I'd be shivering and
- 41:07then, umm, I'd be like, sweating.
- 41:09It's just not good. And I was meant to do 90 minutes
- 41:12and, like Thursday morning, So, umm, I literally just texted my
- 41:17work boss at like 5:00 in the morning because that's the time
- 41:19I had to let my alarm set. And I was like, oh, look here,
- 41:21can I work from home today? And he's really understanding.
- 41:24He was like, yeah, but I just lay in bed all day and I was
- 41:27like, there's no point to me running myself in the ground
- 41:30with a race in like 10 days time.
- 41:34So then did nothing Thursday, Friday, done nothing again.
- 41:40And now I'm on like so many supplements and all that shit.
- 41:43I'm just trying to like dose myself.
- 41:44So I'm have to come down with something.
- 41:46I'm not sure what it is, but my sister has it, my brother has it
- 41:50and my mother has it as well. So it's not, it's not COVID or
- 41:54you test for COVID or you know, COVID is not a thing anymore.
- 42:01No, I haven't tested for COVID. Like it could possibly be, I'm
- 42:03not sure. But I've had it like 3 times
- 42:05already, so I'm not too worried about it.
- 42:08Saturday morning, I was meant to have a track session, but I just
- 42:11pulled the plug on that. And then I did start feeling a
- 42:14little bit better. So Saturday evening I went out
- 42:17for just a little jog, just a little applaud.
- 42:19I was on 40 minutes and the heart rate was pretty low.
- 42:25Like I felt all right. It's just like I'm a bit
- 42:26congested, like I sort of feel like something in the back of my
- 42:29throat. So then this morning I done 60
- 42:32minutes, 15 minutes steady after 20 minutes just to pick up the
- 42:37pace to see how it was and like my heart rate did like shoot up.
- 42:41So I'm definitely not over whatever I have, but I'm, I'm
- 42:45just hoping like the little bit of exercise might like sort of
- 42:47shake up my lungs and just get whatever shit is on them just
- 42:50like loosen it up a bit or like so I can cough it up or
- 42:52something. But it's not really ideal.
- 42:55A couple of like a week out from a race.
- 42:57But I'm hoping I'll be over it by by this day next week.
- 43:02Fingers crossed. But yeah, for the week, 83
- 43:06kilometers and basically it's all downhill now.
- 43:09I have no double days, so hopefully I'll start to freshen
- 43:12up and start to feel a bit better.
- 43:14Yeah, I think better you get it now, right, Then, you know, then
- 43:17this this week. So sounds like you're on the
- 43:19other side of it, right? Like I know for me, the when my
- 43:24heart rate's still spiking or if I'm still sort of breaking out
- 43:27in fevers like a few days after, that's when it's like a bad
- 43:30sign. But if it sort of gets to the
- 43:31point where it's just like congestion, that's normally a
- 43:33good thing, right? Yeah, yeah, Hopefully I'm on.
- 43:36I can see like at the end of the tunnel anyway and just get
- 43:39through these next couple of days and then hit and run fast
- 43:43on Sunday, hopefully did. You times to get ill as well in
- 43:46the middle of July. I know, but that's the thing
- 43:49here, it's like it does be lashing rain, but it's like 20°
- 43:54so it's like really humid and wet.
- 43:56Like it's, it's just not nice outside even to train in.
- 43:59Like you're, you look outside and it looks cold, then you when
- 44:03you step outside like it's actually humid and warm.
- 44:05So yeah, it's just not nice to train in.
- 44:07Did you find out which heat you you're in at the moment?
- 44:11I'm in the first race. So yeah.
- 44:16But it's like to be honest, I'd rather come last in the first
- 44:19race then win the second race. I'd rather just be dragged
- 44:22around and like it'll probably be a massive big kick down as
- 44:25well because there is going to be like 1330 guys in the race.
- 44:29So it's basically just like running the smart race and like
- 44:32don't get too carried away. Just be around lads that like
- 44:35you're familiar with and like you know, we're going to be
- 44:38around where you're at. Do you have it?
- 44:40Do you have a feel for what the, you know, like ideally what
- 44:44you'd go through AK or 3K in like where you look to?
- 44:48We have some markers or more. Just go with the flow of the
- 44:52race, noting that you don't want to go any quicker than blah.
- 44:55I'm just going to go with the flow of the race.
- 44:56But after the first K, if I'm running any faster than like a
- 44:59255, I know I'm overshooting it. So we just need to like pull a
- 45:03black like once I'm around 3K, if I'm between like 8:45 and
- 45:108:40 around then like I'll sort of know and I'll sort of go from
- 45:14there. But like ideally it will
- 45:17probably be a big kick down. That's the thing.
- 45:20So even if it is slow, I sort of need to like remind myself that
- 45:24like, it will get faster and you can make up so much time in that
- 45:29last kilometer, 800 meters. So like, I'm not going to win
- 45:33it. So it's literally just to try
- 45:35and run as fast as I can. If we take away the the illness
- 45:39thing, do you think potentially you could be in PB shape or?
- 45:45I'd say I'm there thereabouts, but yeah, I like, look, I really
- 45:50don't know. I wasn't expecting to run 827
- 45:52there a couple of weeks ago. So I really don't know what
- 45:54shape I'm in, being brutally honest.
- 45:56And now this illness is after like sort of putting a wee bit
- 45:59of a dampener on it, but like it's not the end of the world.
- 46:03Like I literally have like like 8 weeks of good training under
- 46:06my belt. Like sort of bigger picture,
- 46:09like I'm sort of looking at November time for the cross
- 46:12country over here. Like this is just to get me
- 46:14rolling again. So like isn't.
- 46:16That mad that you've you've got you've done 8 weeks, say the
- 46:19first four weeks was bloody fat camp where you're just jogging
- 46:22mainly and doing a little bit of light threshold and now you're
- 46:26like considering are you in five KPB shape or not?
- 46:29It's crazy how fast you can get it back.
- 46:32Like I was 11 weeks off running as well.
- 46:35Like, yeah, so look, that's what I'm like.
- 46:38It's actually good to hear this on from your side as well
- 46:41because like when you're injured at the time, you're like, oh
- 46:43shit, I'm never going to get back to where I was.
- 46:45But most of the time after an injury, like your body so
- 46:48recovered, like you actually come back stronger.
- 46:49So like in a way it's shape, but it's exciting as well.
- 46:52Yes, a big episode coming next week.
- 46:54We'll have dual race recaps from the we.
- 46:57Might have we might have to record on the on the Monday.
- 47:01We'll talk about that after. But then yeah, my Sunday because
- 47:04I'm racing like like around I think it's around half five.
- 47:08We might just postpone the pot if it's possible.
- 47:11You mean you don't just want to sit here the morning of your big
- 47:15race and just shoot the shit? I really don't, as much as I
- 47:19love you guys. What about if if there's a live
- 47:23stream, the main theme could like record over the live stream
- 47:27and compensate on your face? Actually, it's actually live on
- 47:30TV. Yeah, you you'll have to will it
- 47:33be on YouTube? Like will there be a link that
- 47:34we can share with people to possibly will be on Athletics
- 47:38Ireland YouTube channel? But yeah, I'll, I'll keep this
- 47:41updated. I know, but Athletics Island is
- 47:44is what is where likely we'll find a link presumably or if you
- 47:48have a VPN do any use of VPN What's it called a dodgy box or
- 47:52something like that. No, no, this is probably that's
- 47:54a strange different yeah yeah, if VPN you're able to like
- 47:56change your location so you can get all the Irish TV then but
- 48:01I'll we need probably will be like you back here.
- 48:03Pardon, we need you back here to get to sort that I assume?
- 48:08No, I'll send there probably will be a stream all.
- 48:10Right, Ireland is, is Ireland impacted by these new
- 48:14regulations that the the UK have been regarding the IP address
- 48:19and privacy and stuff like have you seen this on X people are as
- 48:24maybe this isn't appropriate for the part that we'll talk about
- 48:27after. I think I know what you're on
- 48:30about. I don't.
- 48:30I'm not sure. That people in the UK are
- 48:32getting VPNs to like ping their IP address outside the UK
- 48:36because of restrictions that have been put on.
- 48:40No, I don't know if that affected her hand.
- 48:43Anyway, if if I can update my upgrade my data plan then maybe
- 48:48I can live stream Dean Dean's half marathon as well from the
- 48:51phone? Oh yeah, go live and easy double
- 48:54Instagram. All right then this training
- 48:59week, so exciting ahead the next week then we'll I'll look
- 49:03forward to next week's episode. And any update on the On Foot
- 49:08watch? Not worth it.
- 49:10Nothing changed. Yes, it's another way like wait
- 49:14and see, right? Another week, yeah, of well I
- 49:17did. I got two more treatments of
- 49:19this. I think it's called
- 49:20ionthroposis, which is the cortisone injection, but without
- 49:26the injection elements, electrical impulse through the
- 49:29skin and it tapes it up every time as well.
- 49:32So like holds it in a certain position.
- 49:36Yeah, that's all now. And we've got two more coming up
- 49:38this week so yeah, we'll see. Running news.
- 49:45We've got to talk about math Fox boys.
- 49:46He's. Back.
- 49:47Back with a bang. Yes, you think he heard us in
- 49:51wherever he was last week when we were joking about Matthew Cox
- 49:55Sydney lineup. What the hell?
- 49:58Yeah, I didn't think about that. Yeah, maybe.
- 50:01Yeah. Excited.
- 50:02Excited did you have? He posted on his Strava, didn't
- 50:06he? Yes, well, I'll go on you.
- 50:08Oh. You went digging?
- 50:10When? What did?
- 50:12I don't know where it came up. Was it?
- 50:14Oh, I, I mentioned I got kudos. Yeah.
- 50:17And then I went on to his Strava to look at him.
- 50:20And his most recent post was like, 2018.
- 50:24And then I just clicked on it. And in the middle of all the
- 50:28comments he had wrote a little section explaining that he's out
- 50:32and yeah, he done a bad thing and all.
- 50:34And I think he's in the Gold Coast at the moment because
- 50:37that's where he's from, isn't it?
- 50:39Yeah, but yeah, he's out. And then I think later on he
- 50:43posted a run. I think he's extremely unfit, so
- 50:46he won't be running Sydney. But no, it's not not nice to see
- 50:50anyone ever locked away, especially for something that's
- 50:53legal in another country. But yeah, he he did do, he
- 50:57committed the crime, but. And he served.
- 51:01Yeah, he did. Well, he didn't serve all the
- 51:02time. I don't know if you're
- 51:03interested to see what his opinion on it.
- 51:05So, So for context, right, like because I don't know if we've
- 51:10ever spoken about Matt Fox or Sweat Elite, have we?
- 51:14I can't remember, but in much detail, yeah.
- 51:18But he, so he's a runner himself.
- 51:20He's run under 220 for the marathon and sort of has vlogged
- 51:25a lot of his experiences. But he started up like a company
- 51:28called Sweat Elite quite some time ago.
- 51:31And I do remember he used to, it used to be a lot of written
- 51:35content, but you would, you would subscribe to his articles
- 51:38and he'd write like there would be written articles that you
- 51:41would be able to read and learn about like insights into
- 51:44different training groups and, and those sorts of things.
- 51:47And then he moved and like during COVID in particular, I
- 51:51think, right, he, he really got into like creating these really
- 51:54good YouTube videos. And yeah.
- 51:58And they were, they were amazing.
- 51:59Like I think the style that he sort of had in terms of
- 52:03following an athlete capturing some of their like key training
- 52:06sessions, like almost like when they get to the specific part of
- 52:09their training blocks. And he was, he was regularly
- 52:11right, travelling Europe and North America and Africa and
- 52:15getting like the biggest name since all the distance running.
- 52:18And I think it sort of blew up during COVID.
- 52:20Yeah, it was the first of its kind in a way, as in like Strava
- 52:24wasn't big back then. You didn't know what any of
- 52:26these elite runners were doing, what their training was.
- 52:29So he was sort of like the inside view of like what they're
- 52:32doing now. A lot of the runners have their
- 52:34own YouTube channels and they're making money off it.
- 52:37So it's what elite that sort of YouTube channel is sort of dead,
- 52:41but he's some gems on that YouTube channel.
- 52:44They're really, really good. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:47And it was sort of like you say, I think the the IT was sort of
- 52:50like the first in its con, wasn't it, in terms of and, and
- 52:52a lot of people maybe have piggybacked off the success,
- 52:56success of those videos, but they got a lot of views as well.
- 52:59I think and, and, and sort of debunked a lot of the mystery
- 53:04around what some of these athletes were doing in terms of
- 53:07ahead of like some of their like key races.
- 53:09It was really cool. And then sort of off the back of
- 53:12that started doing a lot of podcast content, didn't he?
- 53:16A lot of his own either partnering with someone else or
- 53:19just keep sharing his own insights into the industry and
- 53:22how competitive it is, how difficult it is maybe to sort of
- 53:25secure athletes to participate in these videos and sort of some
- 53:29of the financial insurance and outs as well as sort of did some
- 53:34of his try lucky training series ahead of some of the races that
- 53:37he did. And then sort of very recently
- 53:40was sort of what he undertook a bit of a challenge of running a
- 53:43was it a marathon a month for 12 months was sort of the
- 53:46challenge. He was on a sub 220, that's it,
- 53:49a sub 220 marathon a month for 12 months and then it all sort
- 53:54of shit the bed in, in Japan. What, four months ago where he,
- 54:02yeah, it was sort of made public that he'd brought in, is it
- 54:05cannabis into the into, into Japan and form a, a cannabis or
- 54:10something like that. There's TNC gummies or whatever
- 54:13it was. Yeah, which is like extremely
- 54:16frowned upon in like that Japanese culture, like they're
- 54:18anti drug. But in America, where he's from,
- 54:22it is legal. Yeah.
- 54:24I'll be honest, like his IMO podcast series, like as as
- 54:30controversial or as like kind of funny as it was like it's quite
- 54:34inspirational, especially like when we were setting this up
- 54:37because he just fire all these shots off and just like voices
- 54:40opinion without any cares in the world.
- 54:43I don't think he realized he was being controversial either.
- 54:45He was just like saying it how it was in his eyes at least.
- 54:49And I can relate because like pre doing the podcast that you
- 54:53think you have all these big ideas and like these opinions
- 54:56and stuff and then you come to record it and put it out.
- 55:00Maybe I shouldn't, maybe I shouldn't say that.
- 55:03So fair play to him. But yeah, so good to see him.
- 55:07Well, because. Yeah.
- 55:08And so I suppose then for further context, right, like
- 55:11this all happened. He closed down all of his
- 55:14businesses and no one. And for a fairly public figure,
- 55:17we didn't hear or learn of him or learn about his whereabouts
- 55:21for, for up until Saturday, right.
- 55:24And then found and then he, he posted on his rather page to say
- 55:28that sort of he's back and yeah. And and that he'll be releasing
- 55:33AI, don't know if he titled it, it'll be an IMO.
- 55:37But yeah, we'll obviously be tuning in when that comes out.
- 55:40I'd love to see the analytics on that episode.
- 55:43The the retention rate must be pretty high.
- 55:47Maybe one of us needs to pull the shorts straw and go and do a
- 55:49few months to get the viewers up.
- 55:56What country? I'll let you do it in Ireland
- 56:00mate, don't worry, it's fine. No, I'd rather not.
- 56:07OK. Then I think we've covered that
- 56:10one off, do you think? Yeah, so YouTube Diaries, give
- 56:13some of them sweat elite old videos or watch they're they're
- 56:16really, really good. Another big piece of news which
- 56:19I was reading this week. So you know everything which
- 56:22went went on with Grand Slam track and how they shut it down
- 56:25early and cancelled the last meet and then it was all kind of
- 56:28like up in the air Grand Slam were claiming that they'd be
- 56:32back next year and like it was a success.
- 56:35These three meets were great ones like we just whatever they
- 56:40weren't trying to take any accountability or like
- 56:42acknowledge the seriousness or realness of the situation, I
- 56:46guess. And then it's come out this week
- 56:48that they owe 13 million to athletes and they didn't pay for
- 56:55the Miami track, which was of the second meet.
- 56:59So I found it quite astounding that they had to rent the track
- 57:03for 78,000 U.S. dollars which is like.
- 57:06A lot of money for. It was only like a little high
- 57:09school track as well. It wasn't as if it was like a
- 57:11major stadium. But they missed the first
- 57:14payment for that, had the deadline extended, missed that
- 57:18again. So these are like. 30K
- 57:20instalments that they were due to pay and they couldn't make
- 57:23them. So then actual some details came
- 57:27out so MJ has been getting Michael Johnson, who's obviously
- 57:30set it all up. He's been in the firing line in
- 57:33quite a big way because, well, I'll tell you what's happened
- 57:37and then we'll see. So an 8 figure investor attended
- 57:42the Kingston meet, which is the first one in Jamaica.
- 57:45And following this, they pulled their investments.
- 57:49And now this is where MJ has been getting so much blame
- 57:53because apparently the investment was only committed to
- 57:56the level of putting a term sheet in place.
- 58:00Like there was no actual contracts.
- 58:02They never physically had any of the money.
- 58:04And then they've done all this marked in on 100K per win and
- 58:08gone big, obviously with what they've spent.
- 58:10Like apparently the athletes were getting treated like
- 58:12royalty, which you would expect, but they actually didn't have
- 58:17the money to be doing it yet. And then that guy or woman or
- 58:20firm have withdrew their investment or their commitments,
- 58:24shall we say, after only the first race.
- 58:28And then it seems like Grand Slam have just been kind of
- 58:30putting on a front for the second and third one, trying to
- 58:33smile through the pain and pretend like it wasn't real.
- 58:36And then after the third one, they've gone.
- 58:38Yeah, this. This isn't sustainable.
- 58:41Not good, not good as well because it's like, I don't know,
- 58:44you know, the sort of athletics is sort of you sort of hear all
- 58:49these stories like even like this, like chatting with Izzy.
- 58:51Like you learn about how hard people have to work and sort of
- 58:54the things they have to do on the side to sort of maintain
- 58:58enough financial assistance to be able to sort of participate
- 59:01in running full time. And this was sort of pretty
- 59:04exciting. We're a sort of athletes first
- 59:06and sort of large financial incentive for athletes.
- 59:09So it's sort of the fact that it's the first of its kind and
- 59:12it's got completely and the wheels have fallen off during
- 59:15the first sort of, you know, attempt at a not good, I don't
- 59:19think. It'll seem like it's a bit of
- 59:20incompetence, like, doesn't it? I'm not saying MJ is solely to
- 59:24blame, but like from a business decision point of view, like how
- 59:28could they not have had like proper advice on how so like
- 59:31proceed with that rather than just going full steam ahead.
- 59:35Particularly if you're talking so that's at least 10 million
- 59:37bucks, right, Eight figures, is it?
- 59:40So like, like how you're not pretty watertight on your, you
- 59:44know, on the contractual negotiations with that said
- 59:47investor. Like it's sort of all hangs off
- 59:49that I don't get how this this stuff happens.
- 59:53Like there's so many people involved in something like this.
- 59:56And like, it must be like doing your unaccounted, like it must
- 1:00:00be clear from the start that it wasn't adding up.
- 1:00:02Or like doing the money they would have to make to actually
- 1:00:06like even just get to the next year, like between athletes even
- 1:00:09paying 77,000 for a facility, like how does it add up?
- 1:00:15Yeah, normally before you sort of proceed with anything, you
- 1:00:17sort of have to like spec it all out, right?
- 1:00:20Like in terms of you, before you make a decision to go or no go,
- 1:00:24you sort of, yeah, you know, you know, you sort of need to
- 1:00:27account for all of your costs and then work out whether and
- 1:00:30what sort of return you're expecting to get.
- 1:00:32And before you make a sort of decision.
- 1:00:34And, you know, like I'd be and sort of as Ryan mentioned, like
- 1:00:39you'd have an idea on those costs.
- 1:00:41And I think those costs sounds like it would all be managed,
- 1:00:43but you would probably have something more substantial like
- 1:00:46in terms of that, like in principle term sheet, you would
- 1:00:49have something more firmly agreed and well understood like,
- 1:00:53because that's essentially what's bankrolling this whole
- 1:00:55operation. It's I don't think it otherwise
- 1:00:57was like, what were the revenue streams otherwise?
- 1:01:00Because I don't, I do they monetize the television rights
- 1:01:02and stuff all that Well, like, I don't think so.
- 1:01:04Like we didn't tip in any money to watch it.
- 1:01:06And the stadium was not like that.
- 1:01:09Jamaica made the stadium, the atmosphere looked non existent,
- 1:01:12didn't it? So which is what probably led to
- 1:01:14them looking at being able to back out.
- 1:01:17But you the fact that they were able to back out within like the
- 1:01:20first meeting of the first event of the first year means that it
- 1:01:24obviously wasn't more to type the sort of the agreement they
- 1:01:28had for the supply of all the money for.
- 1:01:31Yeah. You would have thought that they
- 1:01:32should have secured like at least like a multi year
- 1:01:35commitment or investment from them and would have said like
- 1:01:40listen, we're going to be a bit of a disruptor.
- 1:01:41Like we might not be received so well initially, but as the
- 1:01:46product is shown and people start to enjoy it, then the buy
- 1:01:49in will come and like the return on investment might be year
- 1:01:52three-year 4, Year 5, whatever. But that's the fact that they're
- 1:01:56just gone. Pulled the ghosty straight away.
- 1:01:59And like the conditions for them to be able to bail on it, like
- 1:02:01you'd want that to be, you know, but they obviously did something
- 1:02:04that allowed them to break, you know, break contract, break the
- 1:02:08contract, right? So in the term sheet worrying.
- 1:02:13I'd love to see the financials on that stupid drink that I had
- 1:02:16to go at the Gold 1. How much do you pay in them?
- 1:02:23Well, not. And there was there was clearly
- 1:02:28some sort of like social media element to it all as well.
- 1:02:32Because if you notice, like there's Cupertier and Carl
- 1:02:37Hawker, like they have their Sova channel, don't they?
- 1:02:40And Josh Kerr coincidentally around inception of Grand Slam,
- 1:02:44started his own one and they were all posting like regular
- 1:02:47videos and stuff. And then since Grand Slams fell
- 1:02:50away that they've done one or two but not the way that they
- 1:02:53were. So you'd imagine that was part
- 1:02:55they were getting paid for their YouTube stuff as well.
- 1:02:58Definitely, yeah, I know that. Was all some of the news then on
- 1:03:01British Champs before we get to the USA is key apparently.
- 1:03:05I haven't confirm this or not, but I did say it from a decent
- 1:03:10source that Keely Hodgkinson hasn't accepted her invite to
- 1:03:13the British 8800 meter Championships ahead of the
- 1:03:17deadline which is now passed. So if that's true, that's a
- 1:03:21shame, a massive shame. But on the flip side of things,
- 1:03:25I don't know if you remember a girl called Phoebe Gill, She
- 1:03:28only like literally came on the scene last year.
- 1:03:30She was like 17 or even 16 maybe at the time.
- 1:03:34And she was still like standing on the start line in a club vest
- 1:03:37and stuff. And she ended up, I think she
- 1:03:39won British champs and she went to the Olympics at 17 and got to
- 1:03:44the semis. She hasn't raced all year either
- 1:03:48since January, but she has accepted her invite, so
- 1:03:52hopefully she can be in there against Georgia, Hunter Bell and
- 1:03:55Gemma Ricci. Keely has a while.
- 1:03:58She's true anyway, isn't she? To world champs she doesn't have
- 1:04:01to run British. That's.
- 1:04:02True. Yeah, because she is still
- 1:04:05supposedly meant to make a return at one of those Diamond
- 1:04:09League meets I was mentioning before.
- 1:04:11Either C Elsa or Lazanne. So like that'll be the real
- 1:04:14telltale. If she pulls out of that then
- 1:04:17you really are starting to doubt the world champs.
- 1:04:20But surely you can't just turn up to world champs heats as you
- 1:04:24as your opener regardless of how well training is going?
- 1:04:27You need some sort of race hit out in their heads of it, don't
- 1:04:30you? She posts something on her
- 1:04:31Instagram reel of her like ripping around the track
- 1:04:34yesterday. I think so.
- 1:04:36She's she's been dead active. That's the only positive thing.
- 1:04:39Must all be part of the plan. So yeah, can't be too unfit.
- 1:04:43Nothing. Anyone have a double trouble
- 1:04:46they need to get off the chest? My only like, I'll throw it out
- 1:04:53there. I was thinking a bit more about
- 1:04:55like the Faithkipiagon news and the fact that it was like a
- 1:04:59diuretic. Sorry, a like masking agent.
- 1:05:03Yeah. And the riff, Riff Chapman.
- 1:05:05Yeah, sorry. Hold up.
- 1:05:12Sorry, is this episode 52? I've really flipped on my head
- 1:05:20with spicy double troubles. No, sorry.
- 1:05:27Yeah, Ruth Chipping get it just in terms of like the fact that
- 1:05:32it's a masking agent just feels like it's like it's a lot more I
- 1:05:36I probably I think I was still just coming to terms with the
- 1:05:38fact that like that record like it smelled like it was a bit
- 1:05:43fishy at the time and it and she's gotten done and sort of
- 1:05:46trying to make sense of it all last week.
- 1:05:48Whereas when I was thinking about it a bit more like the
- 1:05:50fact that you're taking these masking agents talks.
- 1:05:52So maybe it's a bit more like sophisticated than just like,
- 1:05:55hey, I might take something in training, like I take a vitamin,
- 1:05:59but I take something else that might help me recover or do a
- 1:06:03bit more for me. Whereas if you're getting to the
- 1:06:05point where you're taking like these in high doses, this stuff
- 1:06:08to like flush through your system, I know it just feels
- 1:06:10like maybe it's even worse than what you think.
- 1:06:13Yeah, there's clearly a big set up going on there.
- 1:06:15And as you say, it doesn't, it doesn't look good, does it?
- 1:06:18Because they're trying to cover up something like really, really
- 1:06:20serious. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:23So yeah, that's my only thought. I've got A1A small 1 Double
- 1:06:28Trouble. Aussies complain and that's too
- 1:06:30cold. I'll just leave it there.
- 1:06:33Mic drop. We're not set up for the cold,
- 1:06:37you know that. Like we don't have what do you
- 1:06:39have, like heaters in your floor or something like that?
- 1:06:43We've got radiators on the wall. Yeah, radiators, but what even
- 1:06:46are they? Like people wouldn't even know
- 1:06:48what they are here. I don't know how to explain it.
- 1:06:52It's basically like this big metal thing on a wall and yeah,
- 1:06:56heat comes out of it. You have a big.
- 1:06:59Gas boiler and it just pumps boiling water to your radiator
- 1:07:03and then that the heat just they have one in every single bloody
- 1:07:05room and it gets real toasty real quick.
- 1:07:09Yeah, that's why it feels so much worse here, because we're
- 1:07:12sort of not set up to be able to, you know, warm things up,
- 1:07:16just like we're not set up to kill things down, pretty much.
- 1:07:22I also will chip in with one the gym in our apartment building.
- 1:07:30So it's not bad to be fair considering you literally don't
- 1:07:32have to leave your apartment. There's like a small dumbbell
- 1:07:37weight track and like a few multifunctional machines.
- 1:07:40You know where you can do like a couple of things on one one
- 1:07:43machine. And then there's one treadmill,
- 1:07:471 railway, one bike and one cross trainer.
- 1:07:50And for some reason the power in the treadmill has been broken
- 1:07:53for months, so that has been off.
- 1:07:55I mean, that's OK because I don't need to use that anyway.
- 1:07:59So then I've been using the bike one day, cross trainer the next,
- 1:08:02just to give myself a smudge of mental stimulus in terms of
- 1:08:06changing it up. And then it went down before and
- 1:08:09the bloody cross trainer now also has no power.
- 1:08:13So the Tour de France motivation is going to have to remain high
- 1:08:17because I'm on the bike for the foreseeable.
- 1:08:19And then I can't even go to the bloody gym because you go go to
- 1:08:22walk outside to go for a walk or something.
- 1:08:24It's absolutely lashing down all the time.
- 1:08:26And is it there's no power going to the socket?
- 1:08:29Like can you move the elliptical to a different position?
- 1:08:32And that's something to do with the sockets, yeah.
- 1:08:34So drag it up to your room. You see a pair of light 1A step.
- 1:08:41You see, a Perth lad won a stage of the Tour the other night.
- 1:08:44Yeah, Ben O'Connor was it? Is he?
- 1:08:47And then another Aussie last night.
- 1:08:49Yeah, because there's this lad, Harry Sweeney.
- 1:08:51He's actually YouTube diary. We can do that next week.
- 1:08:55I don't know why, but he's the only cyclist I watch and he's
- 1:08:59got a YouTube channel because he does a bit of cooking as well.
- 1:09:01And he went quiet there for ages.
- 1:09:03And then I was looking at YouTube last night and he popped
- 1:09:05up and yeah, he's in that pink team EF or something in Green
- 1:09:09Edge, in Orica Green Edge or I don't know, some pink team named
- 1:09:13EF, but Ben O'Connor rides for it's like pink colours or purple
- 1:09:21or Ben Healy. Oh, Ben Healy.
- 1:09:24He's the, you see, British lad. He's like sitting like he's
- 1:09:28sitting like 4th or 5th overall, I think.
- 1:09:31Yeah, that team I follow. Gotcha, gotcha.
- 1:09:34Yeah, no, he's doing very well. But yeah, no, there was a Perth
- 1:09:37lad that went off the front for like a largely Aussie, Aussie
- 1:09:41base team, which was cool. But yeah, have you seen the
- 1:09:44prize money for for like the stages and stuff like that?
- 1:09:47It's like minimal. No, Yeah.
- 1:09:49Is it OK? Yeah, 11K11K per stage win and
- 1:09:54then even the go on. So all their money must Well,
- 1:09:58what's the Yeah, sorry, what's the overall money?
- 1:10:00Even yeah, like the GC is I think 500,000 maybe and then the
- 1:10:05minor jerseys are like 20 K and stuff like that.
- 1:10:09It's just all must be from sponsorships.
- 1:10:12Yeah, it's interesting that they can get away with that given how
- 1:10:14well, like how the following for the Tour is huge, right?
- 1:10:18You'd think you'd get more for a stage win.
- 1:10:20Yeah, because apparently the the lesser known riders, but like
- 1:10:23even say like for example that Aussie guy and the the Irish guy
- 1:10:26usually talking about there, they probably don't earn much
- 1:10:29money at all. But then the top, top ones are
- 1:10:31earning massive money, which is a big gap.
- 1:10:34Dean, I think you're going to give us a bit of a preview ahead
- 1:10:37of the USA track and field champs.
- 1:10:39Yeah. So these USA track and field
- 1:10:41champs double as what selection for the world champs that are
- 1:10:45coming up in Tokyo that we've sort of been talking about a
- 1:10:47bit. And so I think the way it works
- 1:10:52for if you want to get selected, so if you want to participate in
- 1:10:56the world champs, you need to place in the top three.
- 1:10:59So like different countries have their own selection criteria on
- 1:11:02how you sort of make a championship team for a
- 1:11:06particular country in but for the USA, basically they they I
- 1:11:10think it was it run from Thursday to Sunday mine.
- 1:11:15Is that right? Four days, yeah.
- 1:11:17Yeah. And so, yeah, series of like
- 1:11:21races over those four days and sort of athletes are right
- 1:11:24running for national titles. But I think it's mainly, I think
- 1:11:28it's I said they're nationals, isn't it?
- 1:11:29But it's the but the main, the main goal really.
- 1:11:33And you sort of notice this when you're sort of watching the
- 1:11:35races and they're normally work really well commentated and
- 1:11:38streamed on YouTube. Like the commentators are always
- 1:11:41really well informed. They have like great backstories
- 1:11:43to the athletes. And I find like it's one of the
- 1:11:45vetted but like meets to follow. But a lot of the drama centres
- 1:11:48around not necessarily who wins, but who comes in the top three.
- 1:11:52So like whether or not you finished first or third, you're
- 1:11:55making the America's team. And so a lot of the drama is on
- 1:11:59who's 3rd and, and, and sort of who's 4th who just misses out.
- 1:12:03There's like an added complication now.
- 1:12:04It used to just be if you're in the top three, you go like, I
- 1:12:07think US always sort of had the ability to sort of send all
- 1:12:10three people. Now it gets a bit blurry because
- 1:12:13I think I had a quick look at the sort of criteria, but I
- 1:12:16think you need to sort of essentially be eligible, let's
- 1:12:19call it like. And so therefore either have run
- 1:12:21the qualifying time will sort of be within the the quota based on
- 1:12:25your sort of ranking points to be able to sort of be eligible
- 1:12:28to participate at the world champ.
- 1:12:30So what that's meant is in the past, someone might finish in
- 1:12:33the top three. And we've seen this before the
- 1:12:35Olympics, someone had to someone finished in the top three at say
- 1:12:39USA track and field didn't have the standard to sort of for
- 1:12:42their event. I think it was like the three K
- 1:12:44steeple. And then in the in the next
- 1:12:46week, because I think the standards close on the 24th of
- 1:12:48August, which is sort of in three or three to a bit weeks
- 1:12:51from now, they had to go out and find a really fast race to run
- 1:12:54the qualifying time. So putting aside the fact that
- 1:12:56some athletes that are that are at the track and field don't
- 1:12:59haven't necessarily run the time or got the ranking points,
- 1:13:01essentially it's the top three that go and all and all the
- 1:13:04excitements around watching the each other race race themselves
- 1:13:08onto the team of America. But I've thought I'd go through
- 1:13:12a few of the events, so from 800 through to 10K and mention a few
- 1:13:17sort of ones to maybe get excited about.
- 1:13:22So just for cons. So I start with like women's,
- 1:13:24I'll go women's through the women's and then into the men's.
- 1:13:27But in the women's 800, you've sort of got 3 athletes with
- 1:13:32inside the top 17 ranked athletes in the world.
- 1:13:36So the entry standard's 159 and there's 56 people that can go.
- 1:13:41So of that entry standard of 159, you've got 13 women that
- 1:13:45have already run that that standard.
- 1:13:48And then you've got a further, you've got 20 women all up in
- 1:13:53America that are either in on the quota or in by the standard.
- 1:13:57So you can imagine that's pretty like pretty open.
- 1:14:00So you've got Addison Wiley who's run 156, Sage Herder
- 1:14:03Clecker. So that's Joe Clecker's wife who
- 1:14:07runs the on track athletes, I think, but in 157 and Juliet
- 1:14:14Whitaker also in 157. So you've got sort of three
- 1:14:17athletes who who all have rankings inside sort of the top
- 1:14:2217. And then you've got eight other
- 1:14:25athletes that have all run or sorry, ten other athletes that
- 1:14:29have all run under 159, which is the the auto standard.
- 1:14:33So I just feel like that's probably a fairly open race just
- 1:14:36off the bat. So essentially anyone who's on
- 1:14:39the start line there could finish top three and then that's
- 1:14:42their place secured. Exactly.
- 1:14:44So it'll all be basically watching that race to see who
- 1:14:47exactly crosses the line in that top three.
- 1:14:49And you see them instantly like excited and elated.
- 1:14:52And if you're 4th, you'd be incredibly salty.
- 1:14:55So that's where a thing Moon missed out on the Olympics,
- 1:14:59didn't she? I don't know if she either
- 1:15:00didn't finish in the top three or like she wasn't fit to run
- 1:15:04the nationals. Yeah, that was it, yeah.
- 1:15:06Yeah, she fell, which like she prior to them was like, yeah,
- 1:15:10she should be a walk up star and sort of GB policy or Aussie
- 1:15:14policy, like they have different selection criteria.
- 1:15:16So it meant that she would still go, whereas that's part of the
- 1:15:20drama, I think, of the US is like, you can have these people
- 1:15:23and they could be like, say, Grant Fisher, right?
- 1:15:25Let's say he's sick the week of the race or injured.
- 1:15:28He could be, you know, in all likelihood, the best athlete in
- 1:15:32the team, but I think potentially not be able to
- 1:15:35compete. So yeah, it just adds to all the
- 1:15:37excitement and drama in these races.
- 1:15:40So women's 1500, you've got Nikki Hilts, Sinclair Johnson
- 1:15:43and Ellie Saint Pierre as the top three currently inside the
- 1:15:47rankings, but you've got 8 ladies that have all run the
- 1:15:52qualifying standard. And a further, yeah, again, it's
- 1:15:57up to 20 athletes that are all sort of inside the quota based
- 1:16:00on world ranking points at this point in time, noting that it's
- 1:16:03still open for another few weeks.
- 1:16:06But again that I think as you mentioned, Ron that that final
- 1:16:09is all going to be whoever finishes inside the top three
- 1:16:11goes I think. It's probably like.
- 1:16:14An interesting dynamic going on behind the scenes as well
- 1:16:17because you'd have those, the athletes who are trying to
- 1:16:21qualify but also are thinking about peaking properly for Tokyo
- 1:16:25because they're a shot at like a medal or at least get to the
- 1:16:28final in the actual world champs themselves.
- 1:16:31So they're probably trying to like.
- 1:16:33Peek in a way that allows them to like come back down again and
- 1:16:37consolidate the training and peak even higher again in
- 1:16:40September. But then there's probably those
- 1:16:42athletes who are like, their dream is to get on the team.
- 1:16:46So everything they'll have done this year has all been tailored
- 1:16:49towards and focused towards these championships.
- 1:16:53So like they'll be given everything next weekend and also
- 1:16:59obviously they'll want to run at the world champs, but they
- 1:17:02might. They probably know deep down
- 1:17:04they're not going to actually be competitive and always what it's
- 1:17:07about for them is to make the team.
- 1:17:09So it probably kind of levels the playing field somewhat as
- 1:17:12well in that sense. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:17:15Women's 5K you've got just said Andrews, Carissa Schweitzer and
- 1:17:19Winnie Collardy, who was, she was first in that 2019 NCAA
- 1:17:26final that Izzy was third in that I was talking about on the
- 1:17:29pod with her. But they've all run between 1425
- 1:17:32and 1438. They're sort of like maybe the
- 1:17:35stand out three. But then like 4th is like Shelby
- 1:17:38Houlihan. You've got like other like Elise
- 1:17:41Cranny as well. Sort of all.
- 1:17:44There's nine women that have run under 1450, which is what Izzy
- 1:17:48was chasing the other day, I suppose, which is the auto
- 1:17:50standard. So sub 1450.
- 1:17:53But then you've got yeah, a host of others that are sort of
- 1:17:55otherwise in in terms of quota. So yeah, I feel like there's
- 1:17:59like maybe like if a couple that have maybe stand outs in terms
- 1:18:04of performances, but depending on what the tactics are of those
- 1:18:07races should prove pretty interesting.
- 1:18:10And there's often heats and finals as well.
- 1:18:11They have to navigate and they might be doing multiple events
- 1:18:15which should be interesting. On that women's five Ki think
- 1:18:18that Parker Albie, who's maybe like the stand out is a she's
- 1:18:22pulled out. Yeah, so she's she's so she's
- 1:18:26one of only three women that are in the quota for the 10K.
- 1:18:32So. So the 10K, because there's only
- 1:18:3420, there's one straight final. There's only 27 spots and it's
- 1:18:38Wani Khaladi, Carissa Schweitzer and Parker Valby.
- 1:18:41Parker Valby is injured. Hey, is that so?
- 1:18:45Yeah. She's currently ranked 17th I
- 1:18:48think. And so yeah, so that one, I
- 1:18:54don't know, like maybe they maybe on roll down, maybe
- 1:18:57someone can get in. I'm not sure.
- 1:18:59But yeah, it might be interesting that one that
- 1:19:01because the the interesting thing that women's 10K remember
- 1:19:04they're like auto standards 3020, which is like silly fast,
- 1:19:07right? So like no one's actually no
- 1:19:10American woman's run that time. I mean, no, no Aussie has
- 1:19:13either. And that's what Izzy was talking
- 1:19:15about. She's sort of got an eye to
- 1:19:17watching these races unfold over the next few weeks because
- 1:19:20that'll affect whether or not she remains with within the
- 1:19:23quarter. But goes to like she ran 3044 on
- 1:19:27the road because those Rd. times and track times count.
- 1:19:30But that's as good as what any American woman has run, I think
- 1:19:35given yeah, no, no one's run under.
- 1:19:38So like Wayne Colada's best time is 3033.
- 1:19:43So like in the qualifying window.
- 1:19:45Must be such an unnerving position to be in that way you
- 1:19:49you're in, but you know you're not racing anymore yourself, but
- 1:19:52you know there are chances for other people to like kind of
- 1:19:55improve and stuff. Just got to hope for.
- 1:19:57The yeah, you're not watching it like we are just sort of sitting
- 1:20:00back and enjoying it. Yeah, but I think yeah, I mean
- 1:20:05it'd be hard to shift it like her to I suppose we're.
- 1:20:08You take some comfort. It's like it's summer in a lot
- 1:20:11of these. So a lot of these 10K races,
- 1:20:14there's only a handful that are really fast, like the world
- 1:20:16Override like each year. And then normally you need some
- 1:20:19pretty nice conditions as we're talking about like a nice cool
- 1:20:22Irish summer afternoon. And so you're probably not going
- 1:20:25to get that too often in some of these like where some of these
- 1:20:28mates are. So perhaps, albeit I, I suppose
- 1:20:31you get offered a heap of bonus points, right.
- 1:20:34So that's probably one thing to bear in mind is they get points
- 1:20:37for the actual meeting itself. And nationals is is 1 where you
- 1:20:40get extra points. But outside of that, you don't
- 1:20:43expect the times to be too fast. So.
- 1:20:45You might have got bait out of that one there, but I think he's
- 1:20:48on laughing out of the F1. Lads, F1 is rained off.
- 1:20:52What? It's not God haven't started
- 1:20:55yet. It's it's too hot.
- 1:20:56Oh perfect. Let's let's keep going then.
- 1:20:59Yeah, we're all right. Moving on to the men's, he
- 1:21:09either has an art, he's either doing his washing, got his
- 1:21:12massage gun, or it's the F1 like it's the it's one of the three,
- 1:21:16right? I think he's just in in the
- 1:21:19totems. Took a nature break before as
- 1:21:21well. It's past lunchtime now guys.
- 1:21:25This time for recording is not good for me.
- 1:21:30He's on his way to Red Ass I'll. Just spend juggling putting 3
- 1:21:36kids to bed. But Nah, it's all good.
- 1:21:43All right. Men's 800.
- 1:21:45We've got Bryce Hopple, Josh Howey and Donovan Brazier.
- 1:21:51They've all run they're all with inside the top 12.
- 1:21:54They've all run ridiculously fast and they've all met the the
- 1:21:57order qualifying time of 144.57 men have in total 6 is Hob,
- 1:22:04Hobbs, Kessler, Jonah Kovich is in there with like a 140.
- 1:22:08There's there's six guys that have run under 144, which is
- 1:22:12insanely fast. And it looks like there's up to
- 1:22:1559 guys. So probably, let's say the
- 1:22:18final, most of the guys in the final are probably are in or or
- 1:22:22sorry eligible. So that one I feel like should
- 1:22:24be a good race because like, I don't know, I'd like to see
- 1:22:27Hobbs Kessler do very well, but he's sort of got his work cut
- 1:22:31out right? Like so he raced at the
- 1:22:33Olympics. He did the eight 1500 double,
- 1:22:35didn't he? And yeah, so the hope is that he
- 1:22:38sort of makes it in there, but he's sort of got his work cut
- 1:22:41out that Josh Howey has to be probably favorite, right?
- 1:22:44I know Bryce Hoppel has a quicker time within this
- 1:22:49qualifying window from the Olympics, from last year, from
- 1:22:532020. Yeah, 2024.
- 1:22:55But Josh Howey's sort of like the man in form, you see,
- 1:22:59because it's raw racing. Like it's not a time trial.
- 1:23:02It's literally anyone's game. That's that's why the Usas are
- 1:23:05so, so good to watch. There's so much on the line and
- 1:23:08yeah, no one, no one is going to want to take it out.
- 1:23:11But some of them, the 800, maybe you can, right?
- 1:23:13They like, do you remember when I think it was ahead of the
- 1:23:16Olympics because are Hobbs Kessler and Bryce Hopper, are
- 1:23:20they training partners? They're trained together anyway.
- 1:23:22Sometimes last year they might have different sponsors or
- 1:23:25something, but they definitely. But they basically like, I
- 1:23:29thought they were like 1-2 together, Like they sort of knew
- 1:23:31what they were doing to. I feel like the 800 is more
- 1:23:34likely where you can front run that.
- 1:23:35But anything after that is like, it's just every man from a woman
- 1:23:39for themselves, right? Yeah.
- 1:23:41They that's that one. 1500 top three.
- 1:23:45Cole Hawker, Yarodna Goose, Hobbs Kessler 4th is Josh Hoey
- 1:23:495th. Djonekovic, Vincent Coladi,
- 1:23:52Grant Fisher, Ethan Strand, Gary Martin, like couple of like high
- 1:23:56school, sorry, college phenoms as they're probably referred to.
- 1:24:00So there's sort of 12 all within sort of the quota.
- 1:24:06But yeah, I mean, presumably Grant Fisher doesn't race, but I
- 1:24:08reckon the the rest of those guys too.
- 1:24:11And what often I feel like happens is someone like Ethan
- 1:24:14Strand or Gary Martin, like those top college guys who are
- 1:24:17just in red hot form in college, who know how, who've raced a lot
- 1:24:20and know how to win and are really confident cause an upset
- 1:24:23often in like the 1500 or 5K. So that's what Grand Blancs did
- 1:24:28ahead of the Olympics last year, right?
- 1:24:31So the US Olympic trials. So I feel like that'll be a
- 1:24:34really fun race to watch. Even though yeah, because the.
- 1:24:38Ethan Strand actually came third but didn't have the qualifying
- 1:24:42time. Yeah.
- 1:24:44So drop down to Grand Blanks. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:49And that was part of the, that's where it all gets a bit messed
- 1:24:51up. Now is like some of these people
- 1:24:53in the races, they need to run on the day, they need to run top
- 1:24:56three, but then some of them are trying to run the standard in
- 1:24:58the race maybe or then they know they have like 2 weeks to go and
- 1:25:01run the standard. It all gets a bit gets far, a
- 1:25:03bit more complicated rather than just you finishing the race
- 1:25:06knowing you're getting a ticket and then you you know you're
- 1:25:08going. Yeah, if Kesla's got his work
- 1:25:11cut out in the 800, he certainly has in the 50 into.
- 1:25:14It's ridiculous, the depth pack you'd.
- 1:25:16Think Negus and Hawker take two of the spots for sure, and then
- 1:25:19the third one's kind of open, but it's not to say it's
- 1:25:22Kessler's because there's like four or five who could go to.
- 1:25:25Who would you tip if you were to pick one?
- 1:25:27Negus. Sorry, I mean, so let's say
- 1:25:29Cole, Hawker, Yarod, Negus. You can't pick them.
- 1:25:32Who's your other tip? I'll read the name.
- 1:25:33So Kessler, Hoey Kovich. Is it Vincent Ciardi?
- 1:25:37Ciardi Fisher? I don't think Fisher will do it.
- 1:25:40Ethan Strand or Gary Martin if it's sitting kick.
- 1:25:44I nearly put money on Hoey. Do you reckon he'll do it?
- 1:25:47I doubt it. I think he'll just go.
- 1:25:48All in 800. Just in the 800.
- 1:25:50Hey, so I'll go Kessler. I'll go.
- 1:25:54I'll go. Gary Martin, a Brooks man.
- 1:25:57He's a Brooks man as well. Shout out to rent in Japan.
- 1:26:03You're paying 20 to ones on Gary Martin.
- 1:26:07So I did, I did have a look, I jumped on bet 365 to try and
- 1:26:11find odds for this. And there's no, there's no
- 1:26:14lines, no, there's nothing. That's where athletics, I think
- 1:26:17is missing a a trick like if you, you know, gamble
- 1:26:22responsibly. But if you're able to do that
- 1:26:24and you're able to then hypothesize over with your sort
- 1:26:27of knowledge for this sort of stuff that the Let's Run podcast
- 1:26:31ahead of the US track and fields will get a lot more listeners
- 1:26:33when people are trying to profit from their knowledge, you know?
- 1:26:37Oh, so you're just thinking about an A growth tactic for us
- 1:26:40there as well if we started talking about probabilities and
- 1:26:44stuff for them people that TuneIn to us?
- 1:26:46I promise, if we're talking about retiring from our day jobs
- 1:26:50after episode 50, that's probably the only way I can
- 1:26:53actually foreseeably make it happen.
- 1:26:57Just taking that to the moon. I still got that Grant Fisher
- 1:26:59money burning a hole in my account actually.
- 1:27:02But I don't, I don't think any of us.
- 1:27:05On that, like you need to be good at tipping for that to be
- 1:27:07the case. I don't think any of us
- 1:27:09mentioned the Kenyan guy for the 15 at the London Diamond League,
- 1:27:13did we? And he just blitz Josh Kerr.
- 1:27:16Yeah, that's from Fairpoint actually.
- 1:27:20But again, if you had money writing on it, I reckon you'd
- 1:27:23study the form guide a little bit more closely.
- 1:27:25Yeah, rather than. Just being so emotional and
- 1:27:27going with the big name. We just wanted, yeah, we were
- 1:27:30just going with who we wanted to see when 5K and 10K.
- 1:27:33So 5K, Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Grand Blanks, they I think are
- 1:27:38the standouts all run between 12:44 and 12:48.
- 1:27:41And then you've got Cooper Tier and Cole Hocker that have also
- 1:27:43run under the 13 O1 standard. And then there's Dylan Jacobs
- 1:27:47and Morgan Beadleskim that have also with inside the quota.
- 1:27:51Willie Kincaid sits just outside.
- 1:27:54I don't know, I just think it's the top three.
- 1:27:57I would struggle to if I start right, just is so stacked.
- 1:28:03Yeah, but who do you you can't look outside the first three
- 1:28:06though, can you? No, but like I sort of want
- 1:28:09Cooper tier to qualify to like get through as well because he's
- 1:28:12just like a nice guy And he was it one of the Grand Slam mates
- 1:28:16where he just kicked kicked over the top of everyone, right.
- 1:28:19So it could be in a sit and kick.
- 1:28:21It could be possible, right? I actually done Orion on him and
- 1:28:25I asked him about that. I just learned to his DM and
- 1:28:27like, oh, what do you think of the new structure?
- 1:28:30The new structure 26. And he actually replied, yeah,
- 1:28:33yeah. What was his?
- 1:28:34What was his feedback? He was saying that it's softer
- 1:28:38but still stable. And then I was like, oh, when
- 1:28:41are you coming on the pod? And he's like, oh, yeah, I
- 1:28:43listen to his every week. You tell him to get in line.
- 1:28:48Yeah. He's like, he's not Olympian
- 1:28:50yet, so we can't he's not on our list.
- 1:28:54I'm. Offended I've I've probably
- 1:28:55actually got unread messages too.
- 1:29:04Yeah. What are the out of interest
- 1:29:07structures? What are they like?
- 1:29:09Are they a trainer? Yeah, it's just a stability
- 1:29:11issue. So it just supports your arch as
- 1:29:14well. But he uses them for like for
- 1:29:18let's say some like faster stuff as well.
- 1:29:21So then when you get into your actual speed shoe, you're like
- 1:29:24whoa. Because if you can run fast in a
- 1:29:25slow shoe, you're going to run fast in a fast shoe basically.
- 1:29:28So it just makes you work that little bit harder.
- 1:29:30What phones have they got in them?
- 1:29:33Some Zoom X stuff. I think it is some sort of like
- 1:29:36what plush bouncing Nike phone? I'm actually not too sure.
- 1:29:40Don't call me on that one, but I like the 25.
- 1:29:43Yeah, interesting. I remember you know when they
- 1:29:45were on next Gen. track and field.
- 1:29:48That was their YouTube channel initially.
- 1:29:50They used to buzz off the structure even back then.
- 1:29:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, I could. Likes it as well.
- 1:29:57I've never worn a pair. That's interesting.
- 1:29:59Men's 10K, Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks again, all
- 1:30:04under 27 minutes. Qualifying standard is 27 flat.
- 1:30:08The other person with the standard is Willie Kincaid and
- 1:30:14gosh, Willie Kincaid and Nico Youngs time date back to the
- 1:30:1916th of March 2024. That's insane that that time
- 1:30:23counts them for a race in September 2025.
- 1:30:26They must have just done it when the quota opened or something
- 1:30:29like that. That's that's unbelievable.
- 1:30:33And then yeah, those are the only guys like the, the other
- 1:30:37guys aren't even in the quota. Again, the 10K is just so hard
- 1:30:40because it's only 27 spots. So you've really got to be right
- 1:30:43at the pointy end and 27 minutes under 27 minutes is just silly.
- 1:30:47So again, I can't see, I couldn't tip anyone outside the
- 1:30:50top three. I don't know, those guys have
- 1:30:52just been ridiculously dominant. I just think it would be those 3
- 1:30:56box trifecta. Yeah, the only the only dynamic
- 1:30:59I would highlight which could influence it is for people in
- 1:31:02that five and 10K who are trying to double.
- 1:31:05They might get caught out with the second one and like someone
- 1:31:08who solely focuses on. Whether it's the five or the.
- 1:31:1110K final, which comes as the latter.
- 1:31:14Someone could come through there, but you think that the
- 1:31:17strongest guys are hard to look past.
- 1:31:20Oh, here, Dark Horse. Do you remember a guy called
- 1:31:22Drew Hunter? Oh yes, yeah, he's cool.
- 1:31:26Phenom. Yeah.
- 1:31:28So he's back and he's sponsored by ASIC now and he ran like 330
- 1:31:34something for the 15. Yeah, he's and I think he's
- 1:31:38solely just focusing on the 5K for these American trials.
- 1:31:42So I'd say keep an eye on him. He'd be he'd be good odds.
- 1:31:46Hey, do you have a was it this was it ADMR or something that he
- 1:31:50was that he won? He like came from the clouds to
- 1:31:54win a high school like distance medley, like a or like 4 by mile
- 1:31:59or something like that. Have you seen that finish?
- 1:32:01No, no, I'll find it and share it.
- 1:32:04It's a good YouTube clip. But yeah, that's them.
- 1:32:07So that's the USA track and field sort of running for the
- 1:32:10next, you know, 5 or so days starting on Thursday.
- 1:32:13So this is a very suiting time to say and wouldn't it be great
- 1:32:18if we just all had one platform where we could all chat about
- 1:32:21these these results and races with our listeners and we could
- 1:32:24all engage together and all share our opinions and follow it
- 1:32:28live. If only.
- 1:32:31If only there was a clubhouse. I think that's us for the night
- 1:32:39though. We might.
- 1:32:41So that that was really good though, Dean, thanks for that.
- 1:32:43And then I guess the pressure's on for me as a breath to do some
- 1:32:46sort of justification ahead of the British champs now, which is
- 1:32:49the following week. So we've got some good racing
- 1:32:52action coming up to engage in. And likewise, if any of the
- 1:32:56listeners are like keen followers of the US scene or the
- 1:32:59British scene and you have opinions, like let us know.
- 1:33:01I'm sure we'll put some stories and polls up.
- 1:33:03Ahead of it. Cheers boys, that's us out for
- 1:33:06another week I think. Appreciate it.
- 1:33:08Thanks mate. Thanks for thanks for chatting.
- 1:33:11Short and sweet boys. Don't forget your jacket's OK
- 1:33:13now in Perth in your hat. Wooly hats.
- 1:33:17Slides out and away we go. The.
