- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30And I'd like you to turn this morning to the Gospel of Luke,
- 0:34Chapter 9, The Gospel of Luke, Chapter 9.
- 0:41Before we launch into this, there's a couple things I want
- 0:44to mention. I did write a book a few years
- 0:49ago on based on 1st Corinthians 13, The Attributes of God's
- 0:53Love, and that book is available in the bookstore.
- 0:58And there's a few of them left. The basic premise of the book is
- 1:03God wants to be your first soulmate because he wants to
- 1:07fill your heart, and it takes the pressure off of other
- 1:12relationships. Many times we put God off to the
- 1:16side and we expect from other people to fill our lives with
- 1:21with things only can God, only God can do.
- 1:25And so the whole idea of going through the attributes of of
- 1:29God's love there in First Corinthians 13 and then seeing
- 1:33what that looks like in everyday life.
- 1:35And there are some study questions at the end of each
- 1:38chapter that you can go further and deeper into the principles
- 1:43there of that. So that's available.
- 1:46But last Wednesday night I was teaching on the Beatitudes.
- 1:51And I gave an illustration about having to teach in the midst of
- 1:55a storm on a cruise ship with Pastor Chuck Smith.
- 1:59And I was sick. And I did say, and you'll have
- 2:04to go and listen to the study to get the full ID on that.
- 2:07But I did say it was 1992 and I looked last night discovered it
- 2:12wasn't 1992, it was 1999 and so September 1999.
- 2:19This is after the study. I don't look that green, but I
- 2:23was green for sure. And yes, I did have a mustache
- 2:27and I had one for years until my wife said I'm done with that.
- 2:32This time that goes off. So since the year 2000 I have
- 2:37not had a mustache and I've kept my nose hairs trimmed as well.
- 2:41OK, so but we are in Luke Chapter 9 and we're going to be
- 2:48looking at. Verses 57 to 62, when you close
- 2:59your Bible, all of a sudden you're marked.
- 3:03There it is right there. So what I'm going to do as, I'm
- 3:07going to read through the text and then we'll start with the
- 3:09word of prayer. But I just want you to get
- 3:12prepared because a pen. And a paper or on your tablet,
- 3:18however you take notes. Very important.
- 3:21Just be prepared for what God wants to speak to your heart
- 3:25this morning, because we're not here at some kind of convention.
- 3:29We are here to hear from the Lord, because He is the only one
- 3:35who knows what goes on deep inside of you and me.
- 3:40And so, what's on my heart? Is this text and and what I've
- 3:45titled this 3 hindrances to fully following Jesus.
- 3:51And those 3 hindrances are comfort, convenience and
- 3:56compromise. And we're going to see those
- 3:58three in these three instances of these disciples who are
- 4:03dealing with Jesus in this text. And the Lord is so kind because
- 4:10he's not looking to push them away.
- 4:12He's looking to draw them in, but there are hindrances for
- 4:17them being all in with following him.
- 4:21And there can be those same hindrances in our life in the
- 4:2421st century, especially in our Western culture, that can just
- 4:29so subtly be blocks to his life and purpose in our life.
- 4:35So I'll be reading verses 57 to 62, and then we'll start with
- 4:39prayer. Now what happened?
- 4:41As they journeyed on the road that someone said to him to
- 4:45Jesus, Lord, I will follow you wherever you go.
- 4:50And Jesus said to him, foxes have holes and birds of the air
- 4:55have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
- 5:01Then he said to another follow me.
- 5:05But he said, Lord, let me first go and bury my father.
- 5:10Jesus said to him, let the dead bury their own dead, but you go
- 5:15and preach the Kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I
- 5:21will follow you, but first let me go and bid them farewell, who
- 5:26are at my house. And Jesus said to him, No one,
- 5:31having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the
- 5:36Kingdom of God. So, Father in Heaven, we're
- 5:40asking that you would use this text today.
- 5:44We want to be open to you. We want you to search our hearts
- 5:51and Father, if there's anything in our lives that needs to be
- 5:55addressed. Because you love us, you tell us
- 6:00the truth not to condemn us, but to free us.
- 6:06Because the truth, your truth sets us free.
- 6:10So this morning, Lord, we want to hear from you and we thank
- 6:14you, Lord, for this time together, you and us.
- 6:17In Jesus name, Amen. Amen.
- 6:22Well, let's look at the first hindrance, the first hindrance
- 6:26to a disciple fully following Jesus.
- 6:28And that's the word comfort. And that's verses 57 and 58.
- 6:36So we see this encounter here. Now what happened?
- 6:39As they journey down the road? That someone said to him, Lord,
- 6:42I will follow you wherever you go.
- 6:44Sounds like a great commitment, doesn't it?
- 6:48Now those of you that are new to the Bible, you know that there
- 6:51are 4 gospels. And each gospel has a particular
- 6:56burden to to reach. Like Matthew is specially
- 7:00reaching the Jewish people showing Jesus as their Messiah.
- 7:05Gospel of Mark they have concluded really gives an
- 7:10insight to the especially to the Romans on the Gospel of Jesus
- 7:13Christ. The Gospel of Luke shows Jesus
- 7:18as the Son of Man, and the Gospel of John focuses on Jesus
- 7:21as the Son of God. And so there are accounts that
- 7:26are parallel within the Gospels, and we find a parallel account
- 7:31of this particular disciple over in Matthew's Gospel, chapter 8,
- 7:38Chapter 8, verses 18 to 22 right there.
- 7:42We see that the first two of these three encounters are
- 7:45included by Matthew there and when you examine this first
- 7:49disciple. You find that Matthew gives a
- 7:53description of this man as a certain scribe or a teacher of
- 7:58the law. And that's a very important
- 8:03truth, because the answer of Jesus connects to this
- 8:08individual, especially scribes. We're not familiar with them
- 8:15that was way back there in the 1st century.
- 8:17But the scribes. Were copyists of the Law of
- 8:20Moses, and what they went through their schooling, their
- 8:25whole manner of life was so intense, their education was
- 8:29intense. From the time that they were
- 8:31young, their knowledge of the Jewish law was deep, and they
- 8:35had to understand it, interpret it, and apply it correctly.
- 8:40They were put into an apprenticeship at a young age
- 8:43and then trained in practical ways until they could be on
- 8:47their own. And they had this mastery of
- 8:51calligraphy that every single movement of the Jewish letter,
- 8:56every dot, every title, it had to be perfect, or you threw the
- 9:02whole scroll away and started over.
- 9:06Man, I would have hated to have that kind of thing at school.
- 9:11And because of their deep education, they received a lot
- 9:17of accolades. They were in a position of
- 9:20responsibility, a position of recognition.
- 9:24Everyone looked up to them. And so their position in society
- 9:28was was quite privileged. And so now here is this certain
- 9:34scribe, as Matthew says, actually coming to Jesus.
- 9:39And making this statement, Lord, I will follow you wherever you
- 9:44go. And by the way, that scribe
- 9:48saying that was a was a huge sacrifice because it could
- 9:55jeopardize his reputation. Because this, this group that
- 10:00was following this rabbi from Nazareth, they were all ragtime
- 10:03disciples. They didn't have any learning or
- 10:06or haven't been to special schools, that they're just
- 10:09fishermen. They're just people, normal
- 10:11people. So maybe this scribe felt like
- 10:15he could just add so much to this group, with all the
- 10:19privileges and the special knowledge he had and the
- 10:24education, he could bring them up a bit.
- 10:28Seems like not such a bad idea. At the time that this occurs,
- 10:35Jesus ministry was like booming. There were so many people
- 10:39following him around. It was amazing.
- 10:42Every day was amazing. Hanging around Jesus and his
- 10:46disciples. Wherever he would go, there'd be
- 10:51this group and it, you know, it kind of reminds me of what it
- 10:55looks like. With little kids playing soccer,
- 10:58you know, you know, like early elementary, nobody has a
- 11:01position wherever the ball is, everybody goes and and they're
- 11:05just everywhere. So if you're a coach of these
- 11:09little kids playing soccer, you're trying to get them to
- 11:11hold the position. But no, it's like a bunch of
- 11:13gnats hanging around a light bulb and and it just goes all
- 11:16over the field all day long. Well, here in Jesus time there
- 11:21was so many people. It was exciting.
- 11:24It was adventurous. And describes says, you know
- 11:27this, this seems like how I could help.
- 11:29I could step in here and be a part of this.
- 11:33But Jesus saw in the man what the man couldn't see in himself.
- 11:41And by the way, that's still true today.
- 11:45Jesus sees in US what we have a blind eye toward in ourselves.
- 11:54He sees the truth. He sees what goes on in the
- 11:59depth of our hearts. But it's not that he wants to
- 12:03push us away. He wants us closer to him.
- 12:07But there are hindrances that block that truth, that block
- 12:12that movement. And he'll tell us the truth
- 12:17because it has to be dealt with. And sometimes we don't want him
- 12:22to deal with it. Leave me.
- 12:23You know I'm fine. No, no.
- 12:26Your whole life you're going to be worked with by the Lord.
- 12:30Just be ready for that. I, I I've been serving the Lord
- 12:3454 years and it's still every day is fresh.
- 12:37OK, let's just start as if hit the reset button.
- 12:40Let's. I'm just want to follow you.
- 12:42Jesus, keep it simple. I'm getting old enough where I
- 12:46don't have enough time to recoup from my mistakes and I just got
- 12:50Lord, you know, I just want to know you deeper, because you
- 12:55cannot come to the end of knowing who he is, ever.
- 13:05Jesus sees right through us to the core of who we are, what our
- 13:08motives are, our secret thoughts, things said in
- 13:11private. Nothing's hidden from him.
- 13:16And he and his love puts his finger on certain things in our
- 13:20life and and says, you know, Bob, this you need to deal with,
- 13:27not to condemn, but to pull us closer.
- 13:32And for this particular scribe, I believe the problem in his
- 13:36life was comfort. He liked his comfort.
- 13:42Because here's what Jesus says in verse 58.
- 13:46Jesus said to him foxes have holes, birds of the air have
- 13:51nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
- 13:58Jesus knew the hindrance in this man from fully following him,
- 14:06and it had to do with hanging on to all those special
- 14:10accomplishments. That made him special in his own
- 14:15eyes and comfort. A comfortable life was important
- 14:20to him, and Jesus said, you need to understand we're going to be
- 14:27living in KO as around the country, we're going to be
- 14:31camping out. It's not going to be
- 14:35comfortable. I believe that's the first
- 14:39thing. That Jesus is trying to
- 14:41emphasize when he talks about foxes have holes, birds of the
- 14:45air have nests. They have their places of rest
- 14:48of comfort and safety. But if you're going to follow
- 14:53me, we're going to have times where it's going to be very
- 14:57difficult and rough and uncomfortable.
- 15:02For this man, Comfort had become an idol that he'd gotten used to
- 15:07over the years. And so I want to add Jesus to my
- 15:11life, but I want to keep my comfort zone.
- 15:15You know that's not going to work, Jesus said in the Gospel
- 15:20of Luke, Chapter 9, verse 23. If anyone desires to come after
- 15:25me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, which by the
- 15:34way, was a shocking statement. And the Jewish people knew what
- 15:38that was all about, because the Romans would use that Persian
- 15:42method of torturous death and put it all along the sides of
- 15:47the roads leading into major, into Jerusalem, into major
- 15:51cities, to terrorize those Jews into submission to the Roman
- 15:57rule. So here, as Jesus said, take up
- 16:01your cross daily. What that's not that's not
- 16:05comfortable. This is dangerous.
- 16:08It's dangerous to follow you. Let him deny himself, Take up
- 16:14his cross every day and follow me.
- 16:19For whoever desires to save his life will lose it.
- 16:22But whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
- 16:27For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world and
- 16:32is himself destroyed or lost? For whoever is ashamed of me and
- 16:37my words of him, the Son of Man, will be ashamed when he comes in
- 16:41his own glory, and in his Father's and of the holy angels.
- 16:46And these This leads us to a truth.
- 16:49Faith does not need comfort to be a proof of something that's
- 16:54God's will. Sometimes we think, well Lord,
- 16:58if that's really of you, then it should be nice and easy and
- 17:02comfortable. Where do you get that?
- 17:06Well, after all, isn't God's grace going to be there if it's
- 17:09God's will? Well, yes, it will.
- 17:11But remember that when Paul the Apostle pleaded 3 times with the
- 17:17Lord to remove the stake in his flesh, this thorn in the flesh
- 17:21that was so killing him as it were, the Lord said, My grace is
- 17:26sufficient for you, because my strength will be brought to
- 17:30maturity in your weakness. You see, His grace doesn't
- 17:35always remove the difficulties, but he stands with you in the
- 17:40difficulty because it's in the difficulty where you find out
- 17:44things about him that you could have never learned any other
- 17:48way. And some of you right now are
- 17:51going through difficult, difficult seasons.
- 17:55It could be your health, it could be your relationships,
- 17:58your family. Your loss of finances, Your loss
- 18:02of work, Where's God? I thought asking.
- 18:08You shall receive. Well, put it in context.
- 18:13He stands with you in the fire and in the flood.
- 18:18And the question needs to be, Lord, what do I need to learn in
- 18:22this season? And it is indeed only for a
- 18:25season. Because if you get bailed out of
- 18:28it all the time, you'll never learn the sufficiency of God in
- 18:32difficult times. You understand that the second
- 18:39thing about Jesus answer here is that he used the term the Son of
- 18:44Man, and because this scribe was deeply familiar with the
- 18:49prophecies of the book of Daniel.
- 18:52Here's what it says in Daniel. Daniel was the 1st place where
- 18:55the term Son of Man is used prophetically of the Messiah.
- 19:01Daniel Chapter 7 verse 13. Daniel writes I was watching in
- 19:05the night visions and behold one like the Son of Man coming with
- 19:10the clouds of heaven. He came to the ancient of days
- 19:13and they brought him near before him.
- 19:16Then to him the Son of Man was given dominion and glory and a
- 19:20Kingdom. That all peoples, nations, and
- 19:24languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting
- 19:29dominion which shall not pass away in his Kingdom, the one
- 19:32which shall not be destroyed. So this scribe may have thought
- 19:40Jesus was one of the current prophets of Israel.
- 19:45But now he had to say, if you're going to follow me, you're going
- 19:48to need to acknowledge me as the Messiah.
- 19:52Whoa, That's not comfortable. That might risk losing all that
- 19:58I've gained in my life. Comfort.
- 20:03Ease, reputation. Sometimes in our life we have
- 20:11such a desire for comfort. That it holds us back from
- 20:16really fully following the Lord and only the Lord can can touch
- 20:22your heart about that. I can't judge your outward
- 20:26lifestyle and all that and and say well you can't be doing
- 20:30this, can't be doing that. I mean the scriptures clear.
- 20:32There are certain things that are clearly sin and you can't be
- 20:35doing those, but yet you know how you go about doing things in
- 20:41the car you drive and all all that kind of stuff.
- 20:44You know that's between you and the Lord.
- 20:46But be careful that comfort doesn't become an idol in your
- 20:51life and you will only serve the Lord when it's comfortable.
- 20:57Let's go on. The next category is
- 21:00convenience, and that's verses 59 to 60.
- 21:04And here Jesus initiates a call, He says in verse 59.
- 21:09Then he said to another follow me, but he said, Lord, let me
- 21:14first go and bury my father. In the second instance, Jesus
- 21:20came up to a man in the larger group that was following him and
- 21:25his disciples. And this out of this larger
- 21:28group you'll see in the next chapter Jesus appointed 70 and
- 21:33he gave them power to cast out demons and to heal the sick and
- 21:37to go preach the gospel everywhere that he was going to
- 21:40go in Galilee. And so all of a sudden there was
- 21:44a definite call upon this disciples saying you, you you
- 21:51follow me a command not a suggestion but with the command
- 21:57it touched something in that disciples life that was a
- 22:02hindrance and it's called convenience I believe because
- 22:08Jesus commands can do that. I remember in Phoenix this one
- 22:13couple that usually sat toward the front and and we came across
- 22:17the passage in First Thessalonians that said that
- 22:23basically living together outside of marriage with sin and
- 22:28having sexual relationships outside of marriage with sin.
- 22:32And they came to me afterwards and said, you mean to say that
- 22:38it's not OK with God, I'm going, well, let's read this again
- 22:42actually. And so we read it and they say,
- 22:47well, we've been doing this for years, so, So what do we do?
- 22:55I'm going. Well, you stop.
- 22:59Start there. And are you committed?
- 23:04I mean, would you need to be married?
- 23:06Is is that something you thought about?
- 23:09I mean, you need to be married under a marriage covenant.
- 23:12That sexual relationship is blessed by God, but right now he
- 23:16counts it as sin. And so they looked at each other
- 23:20and go, well, yeah, I think we should get married.
- 23:24I'm going, OK, well, you know, let's just go in the office and
- 23:27get that taken care of. You know, you have to get your
- 23:30license. You got to do all that.
- 23:31But but let's honor God with your life according to what he
- 23:35says. Don't let convenience rule your
- 23:38life. Let obedience rule your life.
- 23:41Because obedience Trump's convenience.
- 23:46So follow me. Sometimes Jesus commands can can
- 23:50bring out things that need to be changed.
- 23:53His his response in verse 59 says, Lord, let me first go and
- 23:58bury my father. Now that sounds honourable.
- 24:01I mean that's what you need to do, take care of your family.
- 24:04But most Bible commentators believe that the sins here was
- 24:09this. Let me wait until my father dies
- 24:13and I give him a decent burial and get the inheritance settled.
- 24:18And then I'll be ready to follow you.
- 24:21It's like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
- 24:23wait. You know, I've.
- 24:24I've got things to take care of. I'll follow you.
- 24:27But you know, I I need to take care of some things.
- 24:32Let me wait until all the kids are out of the house and then
- 24:34I'll really follow you. Let me wait until I win the
- 24:38lottery and then I'll follow you.
- 24:40Gee, I'll I'll just bless you with all that.
- 24:42And I'll tithe so often convenience becomes the rule to
- 24:51go deeper with Jesus. And convenience is not the rule.
- 24:57Obedience is the rule. When God is working on your
- 25:00heart or showing you clearly in the word things that you should
- 25:04or should not be doing, convenience becomes such an
- 25:09anchor that can hold us back from obeying the word of God.
- 25:14Because let me tell you something.
- 25:16Jesus knows that when you choose to live godly in Christ Jesus,
- 25:21you will suffer persecution eventually.
- 25:24And it's not going to be convenient.
- 25:28It can come in subtle ways and it can come in drastic ways.
- 25:32So many times in the gospel accounts we find that life was
- 25:36not convenient for the disciples because Jesus was obeying the
- 25:42Father and was going to do what the Father said.
- 25:47There was a time that Jesus told the disciples, you know, come
- 25:50come apart and rest a while. So they went up to this area and
- 25:54all these people found out he was there and rushed up there.
- 25:58And what did Jesus say? Get away.
- 26:00Sonya bother me. No, he doesn't say that.
- 26:03He looked upon him with compassion and ministered to
- 26:07their needs and then made the disciples give up their lunch.
- 26:12And that was the beating of the 5000.
- 26:15And they were dog tired. And yet it wasn't convenient,
- 26:19but it was obedience. And there was blessing, man.
- 26:23They had 12 baskets full. At the end.
- 26:26It was all finger food because everybody fingered it, but it
- 26:28was food. Jesus said to him, Verse 60 let
- 26:34the dead bury their own dead. But you go and preach the
- 26:37Kingdom of God. Sounds like a radical statement,
- 26:41but Jesus is saying basically here let the spiritually dead
- 26:45who have no interest in following me, take care of those
- 26:47natural obligations. But you there isn't a there is a
- 26:51calling on your life and I'm calling you to step into the
- 26:55urgency of the moment and get the gospel out.
- 26:59Preach the Kingdom of God. What conveniences have risen in
- 27:05our in our lives to the place where they hinder us from being
- 27:09all in and following Jesus? It's not that conveniences are
- 27:14wrong, but yet they can. They can become a hindrance to
- 27:18us. Really taking steps of faith.
- 27:21By the way, living by faith includes risk.
- 27:25There's always this element of risk when you choose to live by
- 27:28faith and yet you want all your ducks in a row.
- 27:32And then they keep flying off, you know, and you go.
- 27:33I don't get this. Come on.
- 27:36I like my life. Easy.
- 27:37Comfortable. Oh, really?
- 27:40Well, yeah. I think you need to read the
- 27:42Gospels again, because following Jesus can become a bit awkward
- 27:47and inconvenient and uncomfortable, and So what
- 27:57hinders us from being all in right now and following our Lord
- 28:00convenience can be such a hindrance, and only the Lord can
- 28:05be the one to point that out in your life.
- 28:08Maybe that's not true for you, and that's fine, but it might be
- 28:10true for some others. Some of you watching online,
- 28:14you're you're getting uncomfortable now and you just
- 28:16mightn't got another cup of coffee because you didn't want
- 28:18to hear me talk. And so, you know, just, you
- 28:21know, come back, come on, you know, we're just going to reason
- 28:23together. All right, let's go to the third
- 28:26one. Compromise verses 61 to 62 in
- 28:31this third instance. It's unique to the Gospel of
- 28:34Luke. Matthew doesn't cover this one
- 28:38and as I look at this and studied it, I see the word
- 28:41compromise coming out and I'll explain it here in verse 61.
- 28:46Another also said, Lord, I will follow you, but let me first go
- 28:50and bid them farewell who are at my house.
- 28:55Sounds like a reasonable request in request in the person's
- 29:00response. Actually, he was kind of using a
- 29:04scripture to sound spiritual, but there was a problem in his
- 29:10heart. He had a divided heart.
- 29:12A divided heart. What was he saying here?
- 29:19Well, actually it's very likely he was quoting from what Elijah
- 29:24said to Elijah back in First Kings 19.
- 29:29Let me read that to you. Elijah departed from there from
- 29:35the Mount Sinai, and then he went and found Elijah, the son
- 29:39of Shaphat who was plowing with 12 yoke of oxen before him and
- 29:46he was with the 12. That's important to know because
- 29:50it ties in with Jesus answer. Then Elijah passed by him and
- 29:55threw his mantle on him. And Elijah left the oxen and ran
- 30:00after Elijah and said, please let me kiss my father and my
- 30:05mother and then I will follow you.
- 30:08And Elijah said to him, go back again, for what have I done to
- 30:13you in that situation? Elijah says, yeah, take care of
- 30:16your business and then come and follow me.
- 30:18So now this disciple says, hey Lord I'll follow you but let let
- 30:23let me go back to my house and bid them goodbye.
- 30:28But Jesus knew what was going on deep in this disciple because
- 30:34the corrective answer to him in verse 62 revealed something much
- 30:39deeper going on in the disciples heart.
- 30:43And I believe the problem was he was double minded, had a divided
- 30:47heart. He had his interest in two
- 30:50worlds at the same time, and that's called compromise.
- 30:56Verse 62. But Jesus said to him no one
- 31:00having put his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the
- 31:04Kingdom of God. Putting your hand to the plow
- 31:13and looking back makes you go off track because you're not
- 31:19keeping your focus. There's a reason that the
- 31:24rearview mirror is small in your car.
- 31:28Your windshield is big because you're supposed to be looking
- 31:32straight ahead. Have you ever been?
- 31:34Have you ever ridden with someone who talks and they don't
- 31:38look ahead while they talk to you and they're driving?
- 31:42It's like all of a sudden you get a bit nervous because, you
- 31:47know, all of a sudden you're OK, Well, OK, OK OK Look ahead, look
- 31:54ahead. You know, keep your focus, keep
- 31:56your focus. But what takes our focus off the
- 32:01Lord? There are things that actually
- 32:05that do you realize that there are things that are neutral,
- 32:08that can become such an idol in our life that they pull us away
- 32:12from our focus on Jesus, pull us away from following Jesus, pull
- 32:17pull us away from serving the Lord.
- 32:19Because after all, it's ski season and I've just got to get
- 32:24up there because the snow is so powdery.
- 32:26Oh my goodness, it's the best. Well, it's been happening every
- 32:30single week and you and you haven't been going to church at
- 32:33all. Yeah, but the snow, OK And I've
- 32:37got all this equipment that was very expensive and I bought a
- 32:41whole lift ticket for the whole year.
- 32:42And and so you've got all these reasons what your feet are kind
- 32:46of in two worlds and it keeps you from following the Lord.
- 32:51It's not wrong in and of itself, but when it captivates your
- 32:55life, then it becomes a problem. In First Corinthians, Paul says
- 33:02all things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.
- 33:07All things are lawful for me, but I will not be bought,
- 33:10brought into bondage to any. There are little roads in
- 33:18England that are so narrow. Only one car fits the roads, and
- 33:23there are hedges that go up about 8-9 feet and they wind
- 33:30along the property lines. And do you know that the
- 33:35national speed limit applies to those roads?
- 33:39The national speed limit is 60 mph.
- 33:43Now you may have a right to go 60 miles an hour on those lanes,
- 33:48but you also have a right to die because you come around the
- 33:54corner and there's a bus that's coming and he's not backing up.
- 34:01And they have little things called tip outs where that's
- 34:05where you're supposed to go like this because you need you know
- 34:07you do drive on the left side of the road over there.
- 34:09So you got to if you if you can't find a tip out and a bus
- 34:13is coming, you have to put it in reverse and back up until you
- 34:16can find a tip out. And usually a tip out is not
- 34:19very big and so it's like OK there goes my wing there you
- 34:24know just right right over or you come around the corner and
- 34:28here's this massive tractor that has two shavers on the side
- 34:32shaving and and and it's like dude I'm going to saw it in half
- 34:36and you're so you're backing up and and trying not to wreck.
- 34:40I mean, it's crazy. All things are lawful, but not
- 34:43all things are helpful. You may have allowed certain
- 34:47things in your life. You think, hey, I'm under the
- 34:49grace of God, I'm not under legalism.
- 34:52Really. How's that working for you and
- 34:55serving the Lord? How is that activity really
- 34:59drawing you close to the Lord? Or is it actually so
- 35:02captivating? That's all you think about
- 35:04during the day? Compromise.
- 35:08It's a real deal. Jesus said in Matthew 624 No one
- 35:15can serve 2 masters, for you will hate the one and love the
- 35:19other. You'll be devoted to one and
- 35:23despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
- 35:28Matthew 7 verse 21 says. Not everyone who says to me,
- 35:32Lord, Lord, shall enter the Kingdom of heaven, but he who
- 35:36does the will of my Father in heaven, many will say to me in
- 35:41that day. Lord, Lord, have we not
- 35:43prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and
- 35:47done many wonders in your name? Then I will declare to them, I
- 35:52never knew you depart from me. You who practice lawlessness.
- 35:58Looking back after putting your hand on the plow means that
- 36:05you're you're just going back to do what you want.
- 36:09Maybe you want to, like, dabble with the Kingdom of God, but yet
- 36:15you've got your foot in another world, in your own world.
- 36:23Jesus isn't trying to push this disciple away, He's trying to
- 36:28get him to see that he can't have it both ways.
- 36:34You're either all in or you're not in.
- 36:39And you know, it just reminds me, some of you have
- 36:44backslidden. It's just what happened in your
- 36:48life. Something took place.
- 36:50You got angry at God, You were so on fire at one point, and
- 36:53then you just got really angry with God because you didn't
- 36:57agree that he. Why?
- 36:58How could he allow such a thing? And you got mad at God, put him
- 37:02on the stand, and accused him of sin.
- 37:05And you're just done with Christianity.
- 37:07And you went off and sewed wild orts like you can't believe for
- 37:11a period of 1015, even 20 years. And now God, because of all the
- 37:20consequences to those years, God has broken you, humbled you, and
- 37:25now you're back. But you just feel like God is
- 37:29disappointed in you. Kind of like a dad.
- 37:33That son never matches up to what his dad wanted.
- 37:38When you feel like a second class Christian and you need to
- 37:41understand something, the heart of the Father is never to count
- 37:47you as a second class Christian. Because here's the truth.
- 37:51When he called you, he knew that was going to happen.
- 37:55You see, he read your file. When he came to the world's
- 37:58orphanage and wanted to adopt you, he read your file and all
- 38:03that was in the file, from the first existence to the to the
- 38:09end of your life. Here, he knows what's in the
- 38:11file. So if he knew you were going to
- 38:15backslide, why would he even call you anyway?
- 38:17Because he loves you. Because you, he, he wants to
- 38:22show himself to you in a way that that changes your life from
- 38:28the inside out. And so were you thinking that
- 38:32there's this shame over your life, Because, man, I wasted all
- 38:36those years. OK, fine, but how does God see
- 38:39you right now? He sees you as his.
- 38:45You're His. You're back.
- 38:49And if you happen to be here or watching online and you're still
- 38:53in a backslidden state, God wants you back.
- 38:57Because sin destroys your life. He wants you back.
- 39:01He knows that you can only be filled with him.
- 39:06You're done with a compromise. The parable of the prodigal son
- 39:11communicates the heart of the Father, and it says in Luke
- 39:151515. So mark that 1515 Easy to
- 39:19remember. When the prodigal came to
- 39:21himself after all of his wild living, he was brought to
- 39:26nothing and he came to himself. That phrase is so special
- 39:30because it's a proof of the Holy Spirit breaking you down so that
- 39:35he can build you back up. And what came to the prodigal
- 39:39son was how gracious his dad was, and he went humbly back to
- 39:46his dad. And when he was a great way off,
- 39:50his father saw him, had compassion and ran to him and
- 39:55fell on his neck and kissed him. God wants you back.
- 40:02You know he loves you. I mean, I know you don't
- 40:04understand that. But he loves you deeper than you
- 40:07can comprehend. And he wants you back.
- 40:10Not only does he want you back, he wants you to fully follow his
- 40:13son. What holds you back?
- 40:18Comfort. Convenience.
- 40:22Compromise. Only you know that.
- 40:27And I believe you're here for such a time as this.
- 40:30It's not a coincidence, but as we close in prayer right now,
- 40:36I'm going to ask you to consider to make a sacrifice to the Lord
- 40:41for what he's trying to get you to see.
- 40:45Is it comfort? Is it convenience?
- 40:49Is that the Is that the block or or compromise?
- 40:53Am I trying to live 2 lives? And as we pray together, when I
- 40:59close here, as our eyes are closed, I want you to stand
- 41:05before the Lord as an act of sacrifice to him.
- 41:10And saying God, you've got my attention and I'm not sure what
- 41:13to do next. And that's your offering to him,
- 41:18your standing, because you're acting upon what's happening in
- 41:22your heart. And we're not going to have you
- 41:24come up to the front and do all that.
- 41:26We just want you to take that initial step, because if God's
- 41:31getting your attention, it's time to act on it now.
- 41:35So let's close on the word of prayer, and I'm going to give
- 41:38you that opportunity to do that. Father in Heaven, we are
- 41:43thankful for your word this morning.
- 41:45There's so much more that could be brought out, but we believe
- 41:50that the Holy Spirit was speaking this morning to address
- 41:54things of those watching online, those listening on Grace FM and
- 41:59those that are here today and those who will watch even in the
- 42:03future. But God, as our eyes are closed
- 42:10and our head is bowed, we're asking you to stir our hearts.
- 42:18If you're speaking to us about the issue of how important
- 42:23comfort is to us and you're wanting us to make it secondary,
- 42:29off to the side, Lord, may we stand and receive your grace or
- 42:39Father God, maybe it's convenience.
- 42:42We're we're we're so worried about inconvenience that we it
- 42:47has hindered us from following you and you're trying to speak
- 42:51to us. And so there are those here,
- 42:53Lord, that will stand and say you've been speaking to my heart
- 42:57about how selfish I've been with my convenience.
- 43:04And then Lord having a compromised heart, a divided
- 43:08heart, trying to live 2 worlds, and you're calling to be all in.
- 43:18And so Lord, those that you're touching right now for that, may
- 43:21they stand before you and say God, please be merciful to me
- 43:27and see me through this. And so right now, Lord, as a
- 43:35congregation, we thank you that you are a God who is
- 43:42compassionate, who is merciful, who is gracious, who is
- 43:47powerful. And may you do in us what we
- 43:52cannot do in ourselves. In Jesus name, Amen.
