- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I have a f call for a friend this morning, came through, I answered, haven't talked to him for a long time.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: He's got a little bit of weight to lose, and doing it the way I did might not be the healthiest if you ask most medical professionals.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And he understood this.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: But he's kind of one of those rare people that have gone through something in his life, something in his life that most of us don't go through.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Like Bud's training, for example.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Most of us haven't gone to Bud's training for the SEALs.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Most of us haven't gone to some kind of a football camp for professional NFL players, or some kind of a basketball camp for those folks, or a baseball camp for those folks.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So those types of places are very difficult.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Same thing with people trying to get into Green Beret, Rangers.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: All those special services, they involve very, very difficult training.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: To have that mindset, to get into even basic boot camp is a rarity.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: A police academy could be a rarity.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: A fire academy, again, same type of very special skill set for those types of people that get into those professions and then make it through.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: And then there are those people that go into those professions and they shine.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: They're extraordinary.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: They're already above the fray, but they're really exceptional.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Well, this was the person that called me this morning, and he's got 20 or 30 pounds on his system.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: He's got some high blood pressure, he takes some medication, and he wanted to know what to do.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The interesting thing is I've known him for a very long time.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: We've talked together at the police academy.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Fantastic individual.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm not a doctor.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: He saw what I did.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I don't charge for this.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: I sell houses.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That's how I make my living.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And hopefully there's referrals that come from me offering advice.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: But I said, you know, at the end of the day, from what I've seen, it seems like fasting is really a very broad subject that can actually change a lot of people for the better, actually not eating for extended periods of time between meals.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: So it's hard.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: It's not easy.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Fasting is one of the most difficult undertakings I've ever gone through.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: And in fact, it wasn't only the fasting that was hard, it was everybody saying it's going to kill me, I'm going to die.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And then when I did my research, it's a very crazy thing.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: It's as if our bodies were engineered to store body fat for times to be utilized when we didn't have anything to eat.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And of course, we're very well fed with the food or stuff that's called food, that's processed.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Probably not the best word for it, food.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: It lacks a lot of nutrients, it's been stripped clean of all those.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: It's been made to be exceptionally palatable, tasty, and something that you want to consume.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: In fact, you'll consume it to an addictive amount.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So I explained to him when I started, it wasn't easy.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Not only had I failed at so many diets over the years, I also failed at fasting.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: How do you fail at fasting?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: You fail at fasting when it comes to refeeding.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: When it comes to the time you're eating again.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And whether that's you miss one meal, you're very famished, so that meal when it comes, the next meal that you're actually going to eat, you just consume it, devour that and more.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: That's a failure.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And then moving into the fasting of multiple days, whenever I would fast for five, six, seven days, that refeed, where you're supposed to take a nice and easy on your body because your body's been dormant, at least for the most part, you're still drinking liquids.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: But the digestive system, from what I've read, it takes about 40%, expends about 40% of your energy to digest food.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Well, that system's kind of shut down.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Waters and liquids go through relatively easy.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: You're not really eating or your intestines aren't chewing on things.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So once that's been shut down for a few days, and then you go out and you have that pizza or that cheeseburger, it's just a nightmare in pain.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: The cramping and the diarrhea and even the vomiting could be an issue.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: So I said, once I got the refeed, that first break meal, known as breakfast, that first meal in order, whether it was one day or five days or 14 days later, that's when I actually realized this is something that I can do, and this is something that works.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: So sure it works for me.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Does it work for everybody?
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: You need to talk to your doctor before you don't eat.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: But it is free.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: There's probably a reason why of the no-cost approach to dropping and torching off a lot of fat, why it's not very recommended.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Maybe if somebody's taking certain medicines, maybe they shouldn't fast.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe you need food to help with the medicine.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: That could be a thing.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So definitely if you're taking medicine check.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: But if you're doing anything and you want to quit eating for a while, I would still find out from your doctor if it's a good thing to do.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: The other thing that I was concerned about, and it's always funny, I had a lot less muscle when I started this whole process of torching off all that fat.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: But it was still a concern, and I think probably a concern because I had been brainwashed to have it as a concern.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Because it was a reason why I didn't actually succeed for a very long time.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: They would say, well, if you don't eat, you're not getting protein, so you should, it's better if you caloric restrict to do it.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: But then when I studied on caloric restriction, having failed at that many, many times, come to find out it seems like your body is very quick to adjust the metabolism, to lower it.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: So if I'm caloric restriction on a caloric restricted diet to let's say a thousand or fifteen hundred calories a day, it doesn't take long for Connor's body to come down to that threshold.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And then Connor's angry and not very isn't sleeping well and just kind of generally in a bad, upset mood most of the time because I'm hangry.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Well, when you don't eat, you also get hangry, hungry and angry.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: But the system's a little bit different.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Your body actually ramps up in the metabolism because now it thinks you're starving, which I guess you are.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: You're starving, I guess, if you have no fat to burn.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: If you're one of those onstage bodybuilders or super lean, you have no fat anywhere.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Fasting's probably not a good idea.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: And of course, check with your doctor, I have to keep saying that.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: But I find that the metabolism actually increases, so you don't get that metabolic adjustment.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: In addition, it has your body issue additional amounts of growth hormone, so that's going to preserve even more muscle mass.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Whereas caloric restriction doesn't seem to have that same quality.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: In addition, the few days of fasting, just drinking water or black coffee, no sweeteners, does a really good effect on the body resetting things.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: It kind of shows you that you're not addicted.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Or if you are addicted to food, you'll feel it.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: You'll get headaches, you won't feel very good.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And of course, you're not eating, so you have the hunger hormone coming in at whichever times you were used to eating in the past.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: It's going to come in and nudge you and say, All right, Connor, this is enough.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: You've done plenty, why don't you eat some more?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Or eat something.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: But it's a wave, right?
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: So you write out the wave and you you continue with the process.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: The other thing that's really hard is being around people.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And right now he's in a position where he doesn't have anybody around him, so it's a little bit easier.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Because the people that are going to be your harshest critics are probably the ones that have a great difficulty not eating.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: In fact, a lot of people can't not eat.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: It's very difficult to put down that fork.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Even missing a meal in some people's minds is tragic.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: It's something that you can't do.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: But being able to reset diabetes and high blood pressure and get off every medication ever, just because I was able to put the fork down for a few days in a row multiple times, and I still do it as part of my process.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: It seemed that the trade-off was worth it, at least in my case.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: One of the things I would suggest is pick up some books, read some literature.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Jason Fung, he's a kidney doctor, a nephrologist.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: He talks a lot about fasting.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: He's got a book called The Obesity Code, a very, very good read.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: You can get on audiobooks or buy yourself a copy and go through it and see what you think.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: You don't have to go in and start your first fast with my record, which was 14 days.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: You don't have to go there.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: That took a lot of practice to get to that point.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: A lot of practice to get to that point and not mess up the refeed.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: And whenever I did mess up a fast, I was always so guilty and so angry.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I missed the whole point of the experience.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: The experience being being able to start again immediately instead of continuing down that same path and continuing to basically indulge when I had given myself a rule not to.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of nuances to look at.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: When you're fat for most of your life, it's a whole different realm than just having put on 20 or 30 pounds.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know which easier though, because for the fat person, any kind of weight loss is really a win.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: For the skinny people out there that have just become fat, maybe sometime in their adulthood, pregnancy or other issues, they remember what it was not to be fat.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: For most fat people that were fat as kids, all we remember is the incessant bullying and the reason why we've always wanted to but failed over and over and over again.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: There are great coaches out there, there are great support systems out there.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: It's like alcoholics.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I was drinking for a very long time.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I was just horrible at it.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I couldn't drink just to have one.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I drank all the way to ruin.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And right while right now I tell myself, oh sure, go have a drink, you'll be fine.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: I know that I'll wake up three weeks later in some park somewhere.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Probably not, but I'm not going to even test it.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: So I just stay away from it.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: I'm not good at it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: I leave that to the people that are good at drinking.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: And then with that, there were certain condolences I gave myself, excuses, if you will, about it being healthy.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And that's been debunked.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Any amount of alcohol isn't good, it's toxic.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: But that's a tough one too.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: It's tough to walk away from that, especially when you have people say, Oh, you had a problem with alcohol.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I didn't get to the point of going to jail, getting arrested, losing everything because of alcohol.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: But it was enough.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: And when you're trying to torch off 135 pounds of body fat, the alcohol just didn't help at all.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Because it takes away the warning light.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So instead of being able to not end up in the jack and box drive-thru, jack-in-the-box drive-thru at 12 30 a.m.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: eating a dozen tacos, I'm able to stop doing that.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Maybe some of this will help you, maybe it won't.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: I hope it does.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I hope you're hearing things that resonate, and I hope you're hearing things that you want to embark on and change.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: If you're fat, you can fix it.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: It's just not easy.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: There's no secret pill, there's all the these uh shots now, the Ozempic and the other things.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: That seems to work great for people.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: I would be concerned about what type of weight you're losing.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: If you're torching off fat, that's great.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: But again, as I remember, if you're torching off muscle because you're taking that injection, try to figure out how you fix that.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: If that is something you can fix.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: I was telling the cat that called, I said, get yourself a couple 20-pound dumbbells.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: And if you're a girl, get yourself a couple 10-pound dumbbells and just work those out.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Do shoulder presses, do curls, do everything.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Do 10 sets of everything per body part per week.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Just sit here and do 10 sets of curls until you just can't curl anymore and call it a day.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: That's pretty good.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: You just torch biceps, leave it alone for a week, next week do it again.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Shoulder presses, you know, do your shoulder presses, crank those out, do again 10 sets of those just with some very light dumbbells, so you can't do them anymore.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: That's going to retain that muscle, even I think with Ozimpic and those other things.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Haven't looked into it.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's catabolic to muscle on purpose, or if it's just because people haven't been lose using their muscle and they lose it as a result of those types of drugs.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: And that's the case with fasting too.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Although the growth hormone gets increased, it's not a bad idea to start moving some of that muscle and making yourself sore.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about soreness.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: People don't like to work out because they get sore.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: It'll go away.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Give it some time.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And when you're not sore anymore, your muscles are coming around into pretty good shape.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: So that's something to look forward to.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: When you're fasting and you're super hungry, it's working.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: So instead of saying that that's a detriment or some problem, you're actually helping yourself.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: See how that works for you.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: I'm Connor with Honor.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Be well.
